8 ingredients your sensitive skin should avoid

8 ingredients your sensitive skin should avoid

by Jo Boyden on Mar 31 2026
If you have sensitive skin, you already know it can feel like everything is a potential trigger. That new “gentle, nourishing, and dermatologist-tested” product that sounded so ideal for your easily irritated complexion, turned out to be not-so-gentle after all, leaving you with a red, stinging face! The thing is, sensitive skin is often the result of a thinner or compromised skin barrier. This means irritants, allergens, and harsh actives can sneak in far more easily than they would for someone with a more resilient complexion. What makes it even trickier is that the culprits aren’t always obvious. In fact, many of the ingredients most likely to trigger sensitivity are hiding in plain sight! Even in products marketed specifically for "sensitive" skin! That’s why becoming confident at reading ingredient labels is one of the most valuable skincare skills you can have. Knowing what to leave out of your routine is just as important as knowing what to include. And once you understand which ingredients tend to cause trouble, caring for sensitive skin becomes so much easier, we promise! To help you shop smarter and keep your complexion calm, we’ve rounded up the top ingredient’s experts agree sensitive skin should always avoid.   What your sensitive skin really means Sensitive skin isn’t just a “type”, it’s a condition. At its core, it usually comes down to a compromised skin barrier, which means your skin isn’t as strong or resilient as it should be. As a result, it reacts more easily to ingredients, environmental stress, and even changes in routine. This is why products that work beautifully for others can cause redness, stinging, breakouts, or inflammation for you. The goal with sensitive skin isn’t to overload it with actives, it’s to protect, strengthen, and support it!   The 8 ingredients to avoid From strong fragrances to overly drying alcohols, there are a few common ingredients that can make sensitive skin worse without you realising it. 1. Fragrance (synthetic & natural) Fragrance is one of the most common triggers for sensitive skin and one of the easiest to overlook! It’s often listed as “parfum” or “aroma” and can even include essential oils. Why avoid it:Fragrance can cause irritation, redness, and allergic reactions, especially with repeated use. Even natural fragrance isn’t always gentle on reactive skin.   2. Denatured alcohol (Alcohol Denat.) Not all alcohols are bad but denatured alcohol is one your skin could definitely do without! Why avoid it:It strips the skin of its natural oils, weakens the barrier, and can leave your skin feeling tight, dry, and more prone to irritation.   3. Essential Oils While they sound calming and natural, essential oils can be surprisingly reactive for sensitive skin. Why avoid them:Ingredients like citrus oils, peppermint, and eucalyptus can trigger redness and sensitivity, particularly in already compromised skin.   4. Exfoliating acids (overuse of AHAs/BHAs) Exfoliation is important, we know this but with sensitive skin, more is definitely not more! Why be cautious:Over-exfoliating can damage the skin barrier, leading to increased redness, irritation, and sensitivity. Strong acids or frequent use can quickly tip your skin out of balance. To read about exfoliation and sensitive skin and what you should do, click here.   5. Sulphates (SLS & SLES) These are commonly found in cleansers and are responsible for that foamy, “squeaky clean” feeling. Why avoid them:They can be overly stripping, removing essential moisture and leaving the skin barrier vulnerable and irritated, not good when you already have a compromised skin barrier!   6. Strong retinol and retinoids Retinol and retinoids can be outstanding when it comes to ageing but are very powerful! Therefore, they need to be approached very carefully if your skin is sensitive. Why be cautious:They can cause peeling, dryness, and irritation, particularly if introduced too quickly or used in high strengths. For everything you need to know about retinol and sensitive skin click here. And if retinol still scares you, here are some outstanding alternatives for your sensitive skin.   7. High-Concentration Vitamin C (L-Ascorbic Acid) Vitamin C is a glow-boosting favourite, but not all forms are suitable for sensitive skin. Why be cautious:High concentrations can be too stimulating, leading to stinging and redness. Gentler derivatives are often a better option. Look for vitamin C serums formulated with a gentle derivative such as sodium ascorbyl phosphate, magnesium ascorbyl phosphate or Tetrahexyldecyl ascorbate, these vitamin C forms are considered more stable and less irritating. 8. Artificial Colours & Dyes These are often added purely for aesthetic reasons — and your skin doesn’t need them. Why avoid them:They offer no skin benefit and can increase the risk of irritation or allergic reactions.   What skincare ingredients your sensitive skin does need Instead of focusing only on what to avoid, it’s equally important to prioritise ingredients that will support and strengthen your skin barrier. These include; Niacinamide (Vitamin B3) Niacinamide enhances the skin’s natural barrier by increasing the production of ceramides, which are essential for locking in moisture and protecting the skin from environmental stressors. Niacinamide is also known for its anti-inflammatory properties, making it a great choice for those with sensitive, rosacea or acne-prone skin. It helps to calm redness and irritation, leading to a clearer, more even complexion. Ceramides When you suffer from sensitive or easily reactive skin, ceramides can be especially beneficial. They help to protect, repair and strengthen your skins barrier, shielding it from external aggressors such as harsh weather conditions, bacteria and pollutants. This helps reduce skin redness, irritation and sensitivity. Ceramides also help your skin hold onto moisture. They act like little sponges, preventing water loss and keeping your skin hydrated and plump! Hyaluronic acid Hyaluronic acid is a powerful hydrating ingredient that attracts and retains moisture within the skin. For sensitive skin, maintaining hydration is key to keeping the barrier strong and functioning optimally. By drawing water into the skin, it helps to reduce dryness, tightness and discomfort, leaving the complexion feeling soft, smooth and comfortably hydrated without causing irritation. Panthenol (Vitamin B5) Panthenol is a deeply soothing and restorative ingredient that works to calm irritation while supporting the skin’s natural repair process. It helps to strengthen the skin barrier, improve hydration levels, and reduce redness, making it particularly beneficial for compromised or reactive skin. It also leaves the skin feeling soft, supple, and more resilient over time. Calming botanicals (like White Water Lily (Nymphaea Alba), Chamomile, Centella Asiatica, Cucumber & Aloe Vera) Calming botanicals are essential for soothing sensitive skin and reducing visible signs of irritation. Ingredients such as White Water Lily, centella asiatica, chamomile, and aloe vera work to gently calm inflammation, minimise redness, and provide lightweight hydration. They help restore balance to the skin, leaving it feeling comforted, refreshed, and more stable.   All these ingredients help calm irritation, restore hydration, and build resilience over time.   A few of our favourites for sensitive skin: Pevonia Sensitive Skin Cleanser Packed with chamomile and other soothing botanicals, this natural cleanser specifically designed to gently cleanse sensitive skin, is both calming and comforting. It’s non-irritating formula effectively removes impurities, excess oil, and makeup without stripping the skin or disrupting its barrier. It is amazing for sensitive, reactive, fragile and compromised skin and not only soothes any redness but strengthens your skin’s barrier making it more resilient in the future and it helps preserve a more youthful complexion too. It’s formulated with the trusty panthenol and ceramides (1, 3, 6 & II) and when used at night will have you waking up to calm, nourished, and beautifully refreshed skin. “I LOVE this cream. It feels wonderful when applied and I've noticed how much smoother and more radiant my sensitive skin is. It’s a beautiful vegan 100% cotton sheet mask and is infused with over 98% natural actives and is specifically designed to calm, cool, and restore sensitive or stressed skin. It is jam packed with soothing botanicals including centella asiatica, aloe vera and cucumber, hyaluronic acid and niacinamide and instantly calms skin reducing redness and inflammation. After just one use, you’ll notice your skin is not only calmer, but also refreshed, and hydrated with that healthy, dewy glow we all love! “I tried this mask at the recommendation of my beautician who wanted to make sure it was ok for my sensitive skin. It was calm and soothing exactly as the name suggests. Easy to use, contains plenty of product that you can massage in afterwards. Leaves my skin feeling soft and hydrated.” - Tanya Oliver And finally to read all about our favourite exfoliator for sensitive skin click here.   When it comes to your sensitive skin, less is often more! Avoiding common irritants and focusing on barrier-supportive ingredients can dramatically improve how your skin looks and feels. With the right approach, sensitive skin doesn’t have to mean reactive skin. It can be calm, balanced, and beautifully healthy.
Why your skin is suddenly sensitive and how to calm it fast

Why your skin is suddenly sensitive and how to calm it fast

by Jo Boyden on Mar 06 2026
Has your skin suddenly decided to become sensitive overnight? One day it was fine, but now it’s red, tight, tingly or itchy perhaps? Unfortunately, sensitivity can come out of nowhere, and when it does it can feel confusing and frustrating when the products you’ve always loved suddenly make your skin flare! The thing is our skin barrier is delicate, and when it’s overwhelmed, it lets you know! The sudden sensitivity you are experiencing is actually incredibly common though and once you understand why it’s happening, you can calm it quickly and get your skin back to feeling like itself again! Keep reading for your guide and the best solutions to help calm sensitivity quickly and effectively!   So why is your skin sudden sensitive? Before you can “fix” your suddenly sensitive skin, you need to know what happened! Skin doesn’t become reactive for no reason. When sensitivity appears out of the blue, it’s usually because something has disrupted your skin barrier (the protective layer that keeps moisture in and irritants out.) When that barrier weakens, everything feels like too much. The most common triggers include; Stress & lifestyle shifts When you're stressed, your body produces cortisol, which can increase inflammation and weaken your skin’s ability to defend and repair itself. Lack of sleep, travel, and even diet changes can also make your skin more reactive. Ingredient overload AHAs, BHAs, retinol, Vitamin C, scrubs, peels… all amazing, but all capable of tipping your skin over the edge if used too often or layered incorrectly. Sometimes, your skin just needs a break from "actives". Environmental stressors Sudden cold snaps, heatwaves, Sun exposure, wind, dry air, humidity, pollution can all weaken your barrier and increase reactivity. This is one of the biggest reasons people experience sensitivity during seasonal transitions. Without daily SPF and barrier support, irritation shows up fast! Product irritants Fragrances, drying alcohols and aggressive foaming agents can trigger stinging, redness and discomfort especially when the barrier is already compromised.   What you need to do now Sensitive skin thrives on simplicity! While you might have been loving your lengthy morning and nighttime routine it’s time to press pause on any strong actives (so temporarily stop any exfoliating acids, retinoids and potent vitamin C serums you may be using. Your goal right now is comfort, not “glass skin.”)  It’s time to keep your routine to just a few simple steps which includes; A gentle, non-stripping cleanser Harsh foams strip natural oils and disrupt the barrier. Switch to creamy or milky cleansers that soothe while they cleanse. A creamy, barrier-friendly cleanser melts away makeup and impurities without tightness, perfect for reactive skin! A soothing, nourishing serum When skin feels tight or inflamed, it needs hydration and calming actives, not more stripping. A barrier-support moisturiser Strengthening the skin’s barrier helps it handle irritation and reduces future flare-ups. Barrier-supporting moisturisers and prebiotic concentrates help balance microbiota and reinforce resilience. And of course, in the day your SPF Sun exposure can make sensitivity worse. A gentle SPF protects the skin and prevents further irritation. Even on cloudy days, daily mineral-based SPF calms and shields reactive skin. Introduce a mask at night At night, once a week while you get your skin back on track, including a sensitive skin mask. Keeping your routine simple but consistent is one of the best ways to reduce reactivity and strengthen your skin’s resilience over time. And remember always wash your skin in lukewarm water, this can make all the difference!   The soothing sensitive skin solutions you need   1. Phytomer Accept Cica - Milky Cream Cleanser 125ml This beautifully nourishing, creamy cleaner gently cleanses skin, removing makeup, while soothing any discomfort and strengthening skin's protective barrier reducing tingling and tightness. It leaves a protective film on the skin too to provide comfort and nutrition! 2. Pevonia Soothing Propolis Concentrate This is a literal "miracle in a bottle" for sensitive souls. Propolis is a bee-derived ingredient known for its incredible healing and antibacterial properties. It works to calm micro-inflammation and strengthen your skin's defences without any of the harshness found in traditional treatments. It’s light, silky, and works wonders on everything from hormonal breakouts to wind-chapped cheeks! Use a few drops on clean skin before your moisturiser, concentrating on areas that are red, reactive or prone to breakouts. 3. Phytomer Oligoforce Soothing Enforcement Serum If you are suffering with sensitivity and facial flareups, we swear by this product! It helps calm and soothe irritated or sensitive skin instantly. It contains anti-inflammatory Phycosaccharide to reduce stinging sensations and is infused with OLIGOMER® (seawater concentrate) which delivers 104 trace elements and minerals to heal and protect. It fortifies the epidermis & prevents cellular fatigue. Calm & soft skin is immediately restored. It really is a powerhouse for anyone struggling to balance hydration with extreme sensitivity.   4. Pevonia RS2 Rosacea Skin Cream This is one of BC’s all-time best-sellers for a reason. It’s a fragrance-free, therapeutic moisturiser that acts like a protective hug for your face. Using calming, soothing and antibacterial ingredients like Green Tea, Licorice and Chamomile, it helps to comfort, calm and desensitise the skin, reducing redness and making it less likely to react to environmental triggers. Don’t let the name ‘Rosacea’ put you off either. Of course, it was formulated with rosacea prone skin in mind but it’s the perfect calming, nurturing and nourishing cream for anyone with flareups, sensitivity and irritability! What’s more this March, when you purchase it, you’ll receive the matching RS2 Cleanser and Lotion 50ml for FREE. 5. Phytomer Accept Comfort Mask For those nights when your face feels hot, tight or reactive, a mask like this one can be a godsend. Think of this as a cool glass of water for your face. Specifically formulated for reactive and "intolerant" skin, this mask uses purified yeast extract and soothing marine ingredients to instantly lower the temperature of your skin. It helps to decongest redness and leaves your face feeling soft and most importantly comfortable again! What’s more it strengthens the barrier over time so skin reacts less and less! Tip: Use it 2–3 times a week, or as an emergency “my skin is freaking out” treatment. Apply a generous layer after cleansing, leave it on while you unwind, then gently remove any excess. It’s also good to keep this in the fridge for 10 minutes before applying for an extra-cooling "cryo" effect!    With the right products, routine tweaks and a focus on calming instead of stripping, your skin can find its balance again. And when you treat sensitivity with care, you’ll notice not only reduced irritation but a healthier, more comfortable complexion overall.

The biggest skincare trends to watch in 2026

The biggest skincare trends to watch in 2026

by Jo Boyden on Dec 24 2025
From countless ingredients to multi-step routines, we know skincare can be somewhat overwhelming! Well, 2026 has good news for you! This coming year skincare becomes smarter, simpler, and more intentional. The focus is on longevity-driven formulas, barrier support, and bio-intelligent skincare, delivering fewer steps with more meaningful results! It’s a refreshingly practical approach that puts skin health first! No more chasing quick fixes or viral trends. Read on to find out the skincare trends the experts predict will be big!   1. Exosome-infused products If 2025 was the year of skin boosters, 2026 is all about exosomes. These microscopic messengers, released by stem cells, carry growth factors, peptides, and genetic material that help skin cells “talk” to each other. Applied topically, they supercharge regeneration, boost collagen production, and accelerate recovery. Expect exosome serums to dominate, a true shift toward results-driven skincare that prioritises tolerance, performance, and long-term skin health. 2. Skinimalism 2.0 Skinimalism isn’t going anywhere, but in 2026 it isn’t about owning fewer products to declutter your bathroom. This year it’s all about using fewer products to protect your skin’s biology. We are talking smarter skincare formulations that protect the skin microbiome, reduce inflammation and support long-term skin resilience. Think nourishing face oils, hybrid moisturisers, and serums that deliver multiple benefits in one. Simple routines, smarter formulas, maximum impact. 3. Bio-intelligent skincare 2026 will see beauty and wellness come together like never before. Bio-intelligent skincare goes beyond surface-level results to focus on cellular health, energy optimisation, and skin function. These advanced formulas help your skin perform better under stress, rather than just masking symptoms. Concepts like “metabolic beauty” are set to reshape routines, giving consumers personalised, science-backed solutions that really work.  4. Sustainable, transparent and “Blue Beauty” formulations Sustainability continues to define the future of skincare. “Blue Beauty”, focused on marine ecosystem-friendly sourcing, waste-reducing packaging, and ethical formulations is becoming a standard. Expect more refillable, biodegradable, and waterless products, alongside full ingredient transparency. Beauty that looks good on you and the planet is officially non-negotiable. 5. Prejuvenation Why wait for signs of ageing when you can prevent them? Prejuvenation is all about early intervention. Think consistent SPF, antioxidant-rich formulas, and ingredients that protect collagen and fight oxidative stress, before wrinkles, dullness, or sagging appear. 2026 celebrates skincare that works proactively, not reactively. 6. Personalisation & tech integration 2026 takes personalised beauty to the next level. With AI tools, skin diagnostics, and adaptive formulas, products will be tailored to your unique biology, environment, and lifestyle. From smart apps to wearable devices, consumers can expect fully custom skincare routines that actually understand their skin, making every product personal, precise, and performance driven.   From cutting-edge science to sustainable formulations, 2026 promises a new era of skincare that’s as intelligent as it is indulgent!
Your travel skincare: The 3‑step hydra routine you’ll love

Your travel skincare: The 3‑step hydra routine you’ll love

by Jo Boyden on Dec 19 2025
Whether you’re hopping on a short-haul flight or embarking on a long-overdue adventure (who doesn’t love a holiday!), travel can unfortunately be notoriously tough on our skin! Recycled cabin air, changing climates, and disrupted routines often lead to dreaded dullness, dehydration, and even fine lines! This is why being armed with the right (travel size) nourishing skincare essentials is imperative! Cue Natùrys Hydra Kit Travel Set. We’ve basically condensed a professional-grade, high-performance skincare routine (that’s natural and vegan friendly too!) into one compact, travel-friendly kit. It’s three steps to refreshed, smooth, and glowing skin, no matter where in the world you wake up! Designed for normal to dehydrated skin, or for anyone noticing dullness, fatigue, or a rougher texture, this compact trio takes care of cleansing, exfoliation, and hydration for the face, neck, and décolleté in just a few minutes a day! Each product is formulated with bioactive, plant-derived ingredients like camellia sinensis leaf water, soybean oil, sodium hyaluronate, and peptides, which work together to hydrate, soothe, and protect so your skin. So what exactly is in the Naturys Hydra kit? The set of 3 products includes a multi-tasking cleanser and makeup remover in one, a gentle exfoliating cleanser and your nourishing moisturiser with long-lasting hydration (24 hours to be correct!) Your 3 step routine Step 1: Cream Oil Cleanser Travel often means layers of sunscreen, makeup, pollution, and recycled air. This is where the Cream Oil Cleansing and Make-Up Remover is your go-to! It’s a luxurious cream-oil hybrid that melts away everything, even waterproof mascara! (So no need for a separate makeup remover!) all whilst respecting your skin’s barrier. One product, multiple jobs, minimal space! And the 30ml size is TSA-approved and lasts surprisingly long (a little goes a long way). What’s more, it’s packed with a plethora of natural goodies. The trusty hydration hero hyaluronic acid coupled with panthenol add a burst of hydration and comfort, so you never feel dry after cleansing. While Camellia sinensis leaf water helps calm and protect with antioxidant support. And sesame, avocado, argan, and sea buckthorn oils nourish and soften, preventing that tight, “stripped” feeling of some cleansers. Use it morning and night by massaging onto face, neck, and décolleté in circular motions, including gently over eye makeup, then rinse. Skin feels clean, calm, and ready for the next step!  Step 2: Enzymatic Peeling Cream Most people skip exfoliation when travelling, but here's the truth! Travel dulls your complexion faster than almost anything else! Dead skin cells accumulate, your natural glow disappears, and suddenly you're looking tired in every photo eek! The Enzymatic Peeling Cream is your glow restorer! It takes 2 minutes, delivers immediate radiance and keeps your complexion glowing throughout your entire journey! Instead of harsh physical scrubs, it uses papaya and pineapple enzymes to gently dissolve dead skin cells and refine texture. Lemon, apple, grape, and wheat bran extracts all support radiance and help improve overall tone. And after every application your skin feels smooth and comfortable rather than sensitised. Apply to clean, dry skin on the face, neck, and décolleté, massage lightly, then rinse thoroughly. Use a few times a week (or as your skin needs) to keep your complexion bright, smooth, and more receptive to your moisturiser, even when your sleep schedule and environment are all over the place! Step 3: Hydra Cream 24H After cleansing and exfoliating, your skin is perfectly prepped and desperately needs the deep, lasting hydration that only a superior moisturiser can provide. The Hydra Cream 24H isn't just a moisturiser, it's an intensive hydration treatment and protective barrier all in one! It’s basically the “big drink of water” your skin craves when you travel. It’s a silky, comforting cream that delivers lasting hydration while helping to support firmness and elasticity. The "24H" in the name isn't marketing speak, this cream genuinely provides 24-hour hydration. When you're traveling across time zones, experiencing different climates, and maybe not maintaining your usual routine perfectly, having a moisturiser that works around the clock is a godsend for your skin. Sodium hyaluronate (hyaluronic acid) is the star hydrator, capable of holding up to 1000 times its weight in water. It draws moisture into your skin and holds it there, creating that plump, dewy, well-hydrated appearance even when you're on a 14-hour flight! Acetyl tetrapeptide-5 is a sophisticated peptide that does double duty, it reduces puffiness (goodbye, travel bloat face) and smooths fine lines by supporting your skin's natural collagen and elastin production. While organic soybean oil and rice bran oil provide essential fatty acids that support your skin's barrier function, crucial when environmental changes are constantly challenging that barrier. Avocado oil, olive oil, and grape seed oil create a nourishing yet never-greasy texture that absorbs beautifully. The consistent base of camellia sinensis leaf water ensures anti-inflammatory, antioxidant protection with every application. Use it morning and evening on face, neck, and décolleté, massaging until fully absorbed. It’s rich enough to comfort dehydrated skin, yet balanced so it sits beautifully under makeup and SPF. The Natùrys Hydra Travel Set is proof that travel skincare doesn’t have to be complicated to be effective. With just three steps, it keeps skin cleansed, smooth, and beautifully hydrated so you can focus on enjoying your trip, not fixing your skin when you get there!

Blue Beauty vs. Green Beauty: What’s the difference?

by Jo Boyden on Sep 19 2025
You’ve likely heard of “Green Beauty”, after all it’s a trend turned movement that’s been around for many years. And if you’ve read our recent blog, you’ll be up on the latest “Blue Beauty” movement now too, but what exactly is the difference between the two you might be wondering? While both put the planet first, each takes a unique approach to sustainability and we are going to explain how. Keep reading as we discuss what sets green and blue beauty apart and why understanding the two can make a big impact on your beauty routine.   So, what is Green Beauty? Green beauty is all about natural, eco-friendly, non-toxic ingredients often sourced sustainably and ethically. Think plant-powered formulas, recyclable packaging, and brands like Pevonia and Naturys that minimise harm to the environment. The goal is to reduce waste, avoid harsh chemicals, and create products that are safe for both our skin and the planet. Green beauty often highlights: Clean, naturally sourced ingredients Organic or cruelty-free certification Recyclable or biodegradable packaging Skin-friendly formulations It’s essentially about keeping beauty routines as “clean and green” as possible!   And Blue Beauty, what is it? Blue beauty takes sustainability a step further by focusing specifically on the protection and preservation of our oceans, rivers and waterways. Why? Because over 94% of life on Earth depends on healthy marine environments! So Blue Beauty is not just about being eco-friendly, it’s about being ocean-friendly! Remember every time you wash your face or rinse off your sunscreen at the beach, those products don't just disappear. They end up in our water systems and eventually the ocean! This is why Blue beauty products like reef-safe sunscreens are so important! Blue beauty brands like Phytomer design products that won’t harm marine ecosystems and actively contribute to ocean conservation. Blue beauty typically includes: Reef-safe formulations (no microplastics, oxybenzone, or harmful chemicals) Ocean-safe packaging (recyclable, refillable, or made from ocean waste plastic) Support for marine conservation projects Commitment to reducing water waste in production It’s beauty with a mission!   The key differences While both Green Beauty and Blue Beauty share the common goal of sustainability, they each have their own speciality! Green Beauty is all about being eco-conscious, using natural ingredients, and supporting planet-friendly practices. Blue Beauty takes that a step further by honing in on our oceans, being ocean-conscious, reef-safe, and actively marine-protective. Think of Blue Beauty as a specialized branch of Green Beauty, born from the urgent need to protect our oceans. It recognises that the beauty industry has a vital role to play in preserving marine ecosystems through eco-friendly ingredients, sustainable packaging, and reducing plastic pollution.  Why Green Beauty and Blue Beauty matter Our daily choices have a ripple effect. From the ingredients we rinse down the drain to the packaging we throw away, everything eventually makes its way back into the environment. By choosing blue or green beauty, you’re not only treating your skin, but you’re also contributing to a cleaner, healthier planet (and ocean) too!   But which of the two should you choose? You really don’t have to pick! At Beauty Collective we embrace both philosophies, providing results-driven professional skincare formulated with clean ingredients and sustainable packaging that won’t harm our planet or its oceans. Beauty that is good for our skin, without compromising the health of our planet! What matters most is being mindful about your beauty choices. Green and Blue Beauty aren't just trendy buzzwords, they represent real efforts to address environmental challenges that affect us all!
From sea to skin: What is Blue Beauty and why is it trending

From sea to skin: What is Blue Beauty and why is it trending

by Jo Boyden on Sep 05 2025
You’ve likely heard of clean beauty. You may have even embraced green beauty with its focus on natural ingredients and eco-conscious formulas. But now, there’s a new beauty trend creating serious buzz across the skincare world! Cue Blue Beauty. And no, it’s not just another fad, it’s a transformative movement that’s changing how we care for our skin and our planet’s oceans.  But what exactly is Blue Beauty, and why is everyone talking about it? Keep reading as talk all about the new skincare trend taking centre stage.   What is Blue Beauty Blue Beauty goes beyond traditional clean or green beauty by focusing on the impact that skincare products have on the planet’s waterways, oceans, and marine life. It is the next evolution of sustainable skincare. While green beauty is focused on being eco-conscious in a broader sense, blue beauty is about creating products that are safe for our oceans and marine life. Think reef-safe sunscreens, biodegradable formulas, sustainably harvested marine ingredients, and packaging that won’t end up polluting the sea. At its core, Blue Beauty is about balance, giving your skin the nourishment it needs while ensuring the ocean (the source of many skincare super-ingredients) remains healthy and protected.   Why Blue Beauty matters The ocean covers over 70% of our planet and is vital to climate health, biodiversity, and even the air we breathe. But it’s also where skincare and beauty have had an impact. From plastic packaging to harmful ingredients that wash down our drains and end up in the sea. Think microbeads, oxybenzone, and other chemicals that harm our marine life and coral reefs. Blue Beauty aims to reverse that impact by: Using biodegradable ingredients Avoiding reef-harming chemicals Prioritizing sustainable harvesting of marine botanicals Reducing plastic waste through eco-packaging Blue beauty isn’t just about looking good, it’s about doing good!   Phytomer, a pioneer in Blue Beauty When it comes to true Blue Beauty, Phytomer is leading the way. For over 50 years, this French marine skincare brand has been harnessing the power of marine biotechnology while respecting the ocean through eco-responsible practices. From their use of sustainably cultivated algae to reducing water waste in production and developing eco-friendly packaging, Phytomer is proof that luxury skincare and sustainability can coexist beautifully!   How marine ingredients benefit your skin One of the reasons Blue Beauty is gaining momentum is that marine-based ingredients are skincare powerhouses. They don’t just sound luxurious, they work! Seaweed and other marine botanicals provide hydration that penetrates deeply, helping to lock in moisture and soothe inflammation. Their antioxidant-rich properties protect against pollution and fight free radicals, reducing oxidative stress and the appearance of premature ageing. The natural polysaccharides found in these plants also help to exfoliate gently, revealing smoother, more luminous skin. And seawater minerals such as Phytomer’s OLIGOMER effectively strengthens the skin barrier, energising cells, and supporting long-term skin health. These natural treasures not only deliver incredible results, they’re also renewable when harvested responsibly, making them the best when it comes to the sea and your skin!   The Blue Beauty products we highly recommend Embracing Blue Beauty doesn’t mean you have to change up your entire routine, it’s about making mindful swaps that benefit both you and the ocean. From reef-safe formulas and marine actives to and biodegradable blends and sustainable packaging. If you’re ready to make a change, simply start by replacing a few everyday essentials with Blue Beauty versions for the biggest impact. Here are some top Phytomer picks we, and our customers love: Souffle Marin Cleansing Foaming Cream This is one of the gentlest foaming cleansers you’ll ever try. It's the rare beauty trend that delivers on both effectiveness and ethics, providing visible results while supporting ocean conservation.
Winter skin beauty: 5 essential steps you may be missing

Winter skin beauty: 5 essential steps you may be missing

by Jo Boyden on Aug 01 2025
Wondering why your skincare routine isn’t delivering the results you expect? You could be unknowingly skipping a few crucial steps. From smart layering techniques to moisture-boosting must-haves, discover 5 skincare essentials your complexion could be missing, but definitely needs!   1. Effective skin barrier repair Our skin can really suffer in winter when it comes to cold temperatures, low humidity and constant artificial heating. Adding products to your beauty arsenal that are rich in ingredients like ceramides can make a big difference and help support skin barrier repair. By restoring and strengthening our skin’s outer layer, we can help reduce moisture loss and better protect our skin against external factors and potential irritants. Your moisturiser is likely no longer cutting it, so it’s time to introduce a serum rich in hyaluronic acid, shea butter, glycerin and niacinamide. Serums absorb more deeply into the skin helping to replenish lost moisture and lipids. At night add a face oil as the last step to your routine. A good face oil not only locks in moisture, but also strengthens the skin barrier, and prevents winter dryness sealing in all your other skincare for lasting hydration and glow! Try: Hubislab Derma Max Brilliance Serum 2. Exfoliating your skin We all know exfoliation is important, but does it mean we are doing it weekly? Likely not. Just because it’s winter doesn’t mean you don’t need to remove those dead skin cells of yours! Exfoliation is essential all year round as it helps sweep away those dull, dead skin cells, allowing fresh, new ones to surface, and more importantly, it preps your skin to better absorb the serums, oils, and moisturisers you’re applying. Since skin tends to be more sensitive in winter, it’s best to choose a gentle enzyme or chemical exfoliant rather than a physical one (which often contains gritty beads that can be too harsh). Enzyme and chemical formulas work by dissolving dead skin rather than scrubbing it off, making them far kinder to dry or fragile winter skin. Try: Phytomer Vegetal Exfoliant with natural enzymes  3. Wearing sunscreen In the winter months many of us get lazy when it comes to our SPF. Surely, we don’t need to wear sunscreen every day since it’s cold and cloudy? Wrong. Wearing sunscreen throughout the year no matter the weather is an essential. This is because sunscreen is an important step in protecting your skin barrier even in winter. UVB indexes differ significantly throughout the year, but UVA rays are present all year round come rain, hail or shine! And it’s UVA rays that accelerate signs of ageing causing wrinkles, sagging, and uneven texture! Try: Hubislab Post Rays UV Protect Sun Block SPF50+ PA+++ 4. Looking after your body We get it, you're bundled up in layers during winter, not lounging beach or poolside in a swimsuit. But just because your skin isn’t on show doesn’t mean it should be forgotten. In fact, colder months can be tougher on your body, often leading to dryness, flakiness, and irritation. That’s why winter is the perfect time to give your body some extra TLC. Treat your body like you do your face: hydrate daily and pay special attention to typically dry areas like elbows, knees, and heels. The more love you give your skin now, the smoother and more radiant it’ll be come spring! Pro tip: Apply a rich, nourishing body cream right after a warm (not scorching hot!) shower or bath. Your pores will be open, making it the ideal time to lock in long-lasting moisture. Try Pevonia Preserve Body Moisturiser 5. Your hands Your hands are the unsung heroes of your daily routine, constantly exposed to harsh winter elements, frequent washing, and sanitizing, yet they're often the last to receive proper care and in winter they are likely completely forgotten by many of us! The thing is your hands age faster than almost any other part of your body because the skin is thinner, has fewer oil glands, and gets more environmental exposure than your carefully pampered face. Those dry, cracked knuckles and paper-thin skin aren't just a winter inconvenience, they're signs that this hardworking part of your body needs some serious TLC. Adding proper hand care to your winter routine takes mere seconds but makes a dramatic difference. From choosing the right hand cream to protecting them from the elements, small changes can keep your hands looking as youthful and healthy as the rest of you. Because nothing gives away your age faster than neglected hands, no matter how flawless your facial skincare routine might be! Try: Pevonia Collagen Hand Cream
Winter-proof your skin: 12 expert beauty tips

Winter-proof your skin: 12 expert beauty tips

by Jo Boyden on Jun 06 2025
Cold winds, harsh heaters and low humidity - winter can cause havoc when it comes to our skin! But with the right seasonal switch-up, you can avoid the dullness, dryness and a little extra sensitivity that winter can bring. From hydration hacks to skincare swaps, keep reading as we share 12 expert beauty tips that will ensure your skin remains healthy and hydrated this season.      1. Overhaul your cleansing routine  This is often the first and most critical step when it comes to your skincare. Your foaming cleanser that felt refreshing in summer might be too harsh for your skin come winter so it’s time to switch to a creamy or milky cleanser that’s hydrating and non-stripping! Look for ingredients like hyaluronic acid, ceramides, or nourishing oils. These types of cleansers remove impurities without stripping away your skin's vital natural oils.  And be sure you avoid cleansing skin with hot, hot water! While as tempting as it can me (and I most certainly have been guilty in the past!) scorching hot showers and baths strip your skin of its natural protective barrier! Instead stick to lukewarm water for both face and body cleansing.  Top tip: Pat, don't rub, your skin dry after cleansing to retain as much moisture as possible   2. Up the ante with your hydration   Winter calls for a little extra TLC when it comes to your skin. As temperatures drop, you might notice your skin becoming a little dry and fragile and the products that were working wonders in the summer months might no longer be enough, this is where layering your skincare correctly becomes an essential.   After cleansing, and before applying your moisturiser, apply a good hydrating serum to your still damp skin (for optimal absorption).  Serums are a must-have in any skincare routine because they deliver high concentrations of active ingredients deep into the skin. Lightweight and fast absorbing, they target specific concerns like dehydration, wrinkles, or dullness, boosting results and enhancing the effectiveness of your moisturiser. Look for ingredients like Hyaluronic Acid, Glycerin, or Panthenol (Vitamin B5). These ingredients draw moisture from the air (and from subsequent products) into your skin. Next apply your moisturiser. Subsequently followed by your sunscreen if your day moisturiser doesn’t already include SPF.    3. Upgrade your moisturiser  You might need to up the ante with your day moisturiser by choosing one that is a little richer and nourishing that the one you’ve come to love over the sizzling summer months.     4. Keep using sunscreen  Just because it might be cold and cloudy doesn’t mean the UV rays are gone! Use an SPF 30 or higher daily, especially if you’re using active ingredients like retinol.  Just remember UV radiation contributes to dryness, collagen breakdown, and pigmentation, regardless of the temperature!    5. Use a night cream if you aren’t already  At night, using a good night cream (as opposed to your day moisturiser) can make all the difference to how your skin both looks and feels. This is because night creams are designed to deeply nourish, repair, and hydrate your skin while you sleep, the time when our skin naturally goes into intense regeneration and recovery mode. Unlike your lighter day moisturiser (which focuses more on protecting the skin’s barrier from external stressors like UV rays and pollution), night creams are usually richer in texture, packed with a higher concentration of active and restorative ingredients like shea butter, ceramides, peptides, hyaluronic acid, and essential vitamins and oils and work to replenish lost moisture and strengthen your barrier overnight so you wake up to soft, smooth and healthy looking skin!   6. A face oil can be essential  After applying your night cream, apply a face oil too. If you don't already use one, winter is the ultimate time to introduce these skin-loving elixirs.   While night creams hydrate and repair, face oils, rich in essential fatty acids, antioxidants, and vitamins, act like a barrier, strengthening the skin and sealing in all the moisture and active ingredients underneath so your skin gets maximum benefits. They basically provide an extra layer of nourishment and protection that your skin craves during colder months. Plus, they add a beautiful glow and can calm redness or irritation often caused by harsh winter weather.  Think of it like this, your serum and night cream feed your skin, and your face oil protects that nourishment, ensuring your skin wakes up soft, supple, and well-hydrated.  Look for: Oils rich in essential fatty acids and antioxidants like Jojoba, Mandarin, Argan, Squalane, Rosehip, Rosa Centifolia Flower Extract or Grapefruit Oil.  7. Exfoliate wisely  In winter, exfoliation is just as important as you’ll still need to remove dull, dead skin cells, but the approach needs to be gentler than before. Instead of exfoliating the 2-3 times a week, that you do in summer, once a week should be sufficient. You’ll also want to switch from any harsh physical scrubs with large particles to chemical exfoliants with milder acids like Lactic Acid or PHAs (Polyhydroxy Acids). Enzyme exfoliants are also a great gentle option. If you prefer a physical scrub, ensure it has very fine, uniform particles.  Top tip: Listen to Your Skin! If it’s feeling tight, red, or irritated after exfoliating, you're overdoing it.   8. Apply a mask  Another little luxury for your skin, invaluable all year around but extremely beneficial in winter is a mask!   A good hydrating face mask acts as an intensive treatment, replenishing lost moisture, soothing sensitivity, and reinforcing the skin barrier. Packed with nourishing ingredients, it helps restore softness, glow, and resilience!    9. Winter hair care  Just like the skin on your face, your hair and scalp can also suffer from dryness and static in winter so make sure you are using gentle, hydrating and sulfate-free shampoos and rich conditioners and incorporate a weekly hair treatments to replenish moisture and strengthen strands.   10. Don’t forget your hands!  Unfortunately, the harsh winter weather can leave our often-neglected hands dry, cracked, and uncomfortable! A quality hand cream restores and locks in hydration, creates a protective barrier against environmental stressors, and nourishes skin with ingredients like shea butter, squalane, or natural oils. Regular use not only keeps your hands soft and smooth, but also helps prevent premature ageing and soothes irritation, ensuring your hands stay healthy and resilient throughout the colder months. 11. Stay hydrated from within  Drinking enough water (and herbal teas) helps keep your skin hydrated from the inside out. Eating healthy fats like avocados, nuts, and fish can also boost skin hydration. 12. Treat yourself to at-home spa sessions  Warm, relaxing baths with aromatic bath oils or stress-relieving gels are not only calming but deeply nourishing for your skin and soul. Treat yourself to weekly spa-at-home sessions and let your skin (and you!) reap the benefits.   For the best beauty buys this winter for soft glowing skin click here.
Rosacea Relief: Expert tips and products to calm and treat skin

Rosacea Relief: Expert tips and products to calm and treat skin

by Jo Boyden on Apr 11 2025
If you have rosacea, you’ll know how unpredictable it can be, one day your skin will feel calm, the next irritation can totally take over! The thing is while rosacea can’t be cured per se, there are things you can do to keep your symptoms at bay. Whether you’re dealing with persistent redness, facial flare-ups, pesky pimples or discomfort, we’ve gathered expert-approved tips and product recommendations to help you soothe and protect your sensitive skin.   Firstly, exactly what is rosacea, and do you have this skincare condition? Rosacea is a chronic and progressive, micro-circulation disorder visibly resulting in persistent redness, dilated capillaries, congestion, and last but not least, papules and pustules (breakouts!), so if you have suffered/are suffering from spells of facial flushing and blushing presenting skin redness, pimples, dilated capillaries and sometimes a burning sensation it’s likely you do have rosacea.   What are the most common rosacea triggers? It’s important to understand what your triggers are when it comes to your flare ups. Rosacea-prone skin is highly reactive, meaning it responds aggressively to environmental triggers, harsh ingredients, and even stress. The most common rosacea triggers include sun exposure, extreme temperatures, spicy foods, hot drinks like coffee and tea, alcohol, certain skincare ingredients, hormonal changes and unfortunately stress! Because the skin barrier is often compromised, it’s crucial to strengthen and protect it with gentle, nourishing formulas.   How to treat rosacea 1. You’ll want to choose gentle, fragrance-free skincare When it comes to rosacea, less is more. Make sure you avoid (at all costs!) harsh cleansers, alcohol-based toners, and heavily fragranced products, as these can worsen irritation. Instead, opt for a gentle, hydrating cleanser a soothing serum and calming, non-comedogenic moisturiser with barrier-strengthening ingredients to lock in moisture. Products designed specifically for rosacea skin will be best. 2. Protect your skin with SPF daily Sun exposure is one of the biggest triggers for rosacea flare-ups. A broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher is essential to prevent redness and irritation. Look for mineral-based sunscreens containing zinc oxide or titanium dioxide, as they are less likely to cause reactions. 3. Invest in soothing ingredients The ingredients in your skincare are imperative when it comes to treating rosacea. You’ll want to look out for skincare with ingredients that help calm inflammation and strengthen the skin barrier including; Aloe Vera – Hydrates and reduces redness Green Tea Extract – Rich in antioxidants that soothe irritation Centella Asiatica – Helps repair and strengthen sensitive skin Chamomile – Calms and soothes reactive skin French Rose – Anti-inflammatory and calming it soothes sensitive, rosacea prone skin 4. Avoid common irritants Unfortunately like with the common triggers (which you also need to avoid!), certain ingredients can exacerbate rosacea symptoms, so it’s best to steer clear of alcohol, synthetic fragrances, menthol, and exfoliants like glycolic acid. If you’re unsure about a product, do a patch test before applying it to your face first! 5. Stay consistent and be patient Rosacea can’t be cured, but with the right regimen, symptoms can be managed and flare-ups reduced. Avoid frequently switching products and give new routines time, results may take several weeks. 6. Last but not least when it comes to makeup go mineral! This is because mineral makeup is gentle, non-comedogenic, and free from irritants like fragrance and preservatives. Its natural, soothing ingredients help calm inflammation while offering breathable coverage that conceals redness without clogging pores or aggravating sensitive skin. Perfect for achieving a flawless finish with skin-loving benefits basically!   Best Products for Rosacea-Prone Skin We highly recommend the Pevonia Rosacea RS2 line! For more information on why it might be the perfection rosacea range for you click here. And to finish off your morning skincare routine and before you apply your makeup for rosacea skin you need to make sure you don’t skip on your sunscreen! Of course daily SPF is a necessity for everyone to protect skin against premature ageing and hyperpigmentation, but if you suffer from rosacea you’ll know that sun exposure is one of the biggest triggers for flare ups! UV rays can increase redness, inflammation, and sensitivity, making rosacea symptoms worse over time. A good sunscreen helps protect the skin’s barrier, preventing further irritation and reducing the risk of long-term damage. And we get it! If you have rosacea or sensitive skin, you might be a little reluctant to slather on sunscreen but Hubislab Herb 8 Soothing Blemish Balm SPF 30 PA++ is the ideal SPF! It soothes and regenerates sensitive skin while protecting skin against sun damage, premature skin ageing including dark spots, and other external factors. Its clever formulation of Zinc oxide, UVA and UVB protection and 8 herbal extracts also ensures the prevention of wrinkles and inflammation. Daily sun protection is one of the best ways to keep rosacea-prone skin calm, healthy, and happy.

They not only calm inflammation, combat irritation and soothe skin but also encourage skin regeneration and collagen repair while strengthening capillaries and promoting vascular health too, all without compromising skin hydration and health! It pro-inflammatory enzymes and cytokines, reducing redness and swelling. Clinical studies show it lowers skin inflammation markers by up to 50% within two weeks. It also suppresses histamine release and blocks inflammatory mediators, addressing flare-ups and irritation. By preventing hyaluronic acid degradation, DPG enhances hydration and strengthens the skin barrier, critical for rosacea-prone skin prone to dryness and sensitivity. This reduces transepidermal water loss and improves hydration by 30% in one week. DPG also promotes collagen synthesis during wound healing, accelerating skin repair and improving structural integrity. And finally it’s a powerful antioxidant that neutralizes free radicals protecting skin against environmental triggers like UV exposure.   Olibanum Frankincense Known for its powerful anti-inflammatory and healing properties, Olibanum Frankincense helps to calm redness, soothe irritation, and strengthen the skin’s natural barrier. Rich in antioxidants, it also protects against environmental stressors while promoting skin regeneration and collagen repair, making it ideal for sensitive and reactive skin.   Chamomile Rich in flavonoids and antioxidants, chamomile helps reduce redness, calm irritation, and strengthen the skin’s natural barrier. Chamomile also contains bisabolol, which promotes healing, hydrates sensitive skin, and protects against environmental stressors.   Green Tea Green Tea is renowned for it’s powerful antioxidant properties but it’s also anti-inflammatory and soothing! Rich in polyphenols, particularly epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), it helps reduce redness, calm irritation, and protect against environmental stressors. Green tea also supports skin barrier function and helps control flare-ups.   French Rose Extract French Rose Extract is another excellent ingredient for rosacea-prone skin due to its soothing, anti-inflammatory, and hydrating properties. The ultimate skincare routine for sensitive skin

The ultimate skincare routine for sensitive skin

by Jo Boyden on Jul 04 2024
If you have sensitive skin, you’ll know how challenging it can be to find the right skincare products that actually work and don’t just exacerbate your already inflamed skin! Redness, irritation, and dryness can make it seem next to impossible to achieving that calm, radiant complexion you so wish for, but impossible it is not! With the right approach and gentle products, you can soothe your sensitive skin and maintain its overall health. Keep reading for our guide to the ultimate skincare routine for sensitive skin. A guide we’ve tailored just for you, featuring must-have products and tips to keep your sensitive skin happy and healthy. Firstly though, why are you suffering from sensitive skin? Unfortunately sensitive skin can be caused by a variety of factors. It might be due to genetics (thanks mum and dad!), making your skin more reactive to certain triggers. Environmental factors such as pollution, extreme weather conditions, and exposure to harsh chemicals can also contribute. Over exfoliated skin or simply overuse of skincare products, especially those with strong fragrances or alcohol, can strip the skin's natural barrier, leading to sensitivity. Stress and hormonal changes can also play a significant role, disrupting the skin's balance. Additionally, underlying skin conditions like eczema or rosacea can cause heightened sensitivity. It’s best to try and identify and avoid your triggers (along with using gentle skincare products) to help manage your sensitive skin. The best skincare routine for sensitive skin Step 1: Start with a Gentle Cleanser The first step in any skincare routine is cleansing, but for sensitive skin, it's crucial to use a gentle, fragrance-free cleanser that doesn’t strip away natural oils. Opt for a fragrance-free, non-foaming cleanser with soothing and healing ingredients like aloe vera, glycerin, niacinamide and chamomile. Try: Naturys 2 in 1 Makeup Remover + Micellar Gel. Formulated with nasturtium and niacinamide, this natural 2-in-1 cleanser and makeup remover is good or all skin types but has been specifically targeted for sensitive skin. Gently but effectively it removes makeup, dirt and impurities from face and eyes without causing any irritation or dryness, leaving skin instantly fresh, soothed and more supple. How to Use: Use your fingertips to apply the cleanser and gently massage onto your face in circular motions. Rinse with lukewarm water and pat your skin dry with soft towel to avoid further irritation. Step 2: Hydrating Oil Oils are like potent treatments that target specific concerns deeply nurturing the skin. For sensitive skin, choose an oil that focuses on hydration and calming effects. Try: Naturys Sensitive Hydra Oil. This quick-absorbing soothing face oil is particularly suitable for sensitive skin types and is the best ally against skin redness and irritation, signs of stress, pollution and blue light. Rich in plant-based active ingredients, including blueberry oil, bisabolol, and lycopene, it protects skin from environmental damage while diffusing redness and discomfort. How to Use: Apply a few drops to clean, dry or slightly damp face and neck, gently patting it into your skin until fully absorbed. Can be used alone or mixed with your moisturiser. Step 3: Moisturiser Moisturising is essential for locking in hydration and protecting your skin barrier. Choose a moisturiser that is free from fragrances, dyes, and other potential irritants and instead opt for nourishing, soothing ingredients that will hydrate, calm and improve skin. Try: Naturys De-Sensitive Cream. The perfect antidote for reactive and dehydrated skin prone to redness, this beautifully nourishing cream effectively calms skin while combatting redness. Copper Tripeptides also help promote collagen and elastin production, firming the skin and reducing fine lines while increasing oxygen supply for more supple skin. How to Use: Apply the moisturiser to your face and neck, gently massaging it in until fully absorbed. Step 4: Sunscreen Sunscreen is a non-negotiable step in any skincare routine. But sadly sensitive skin is particularly vulnerable to sun damage so sunscreen is a must. Sensitive skin needs broad-spectrum protection without harsh chemicals. A mineral-based sunscreen is less likely to irritate and provides effective protection. Look for ingredients like zinc oxide or titanium dioxide. Try: Hubislab Post Rays UV Protect Sun Block SPF 50+++. Not only is it formulated with both zinc oxide and titanium dioxide so perfect for sensitive and ageing skin since zero irritation, it’s also rich in hydrolyzed Collagen and peptides keeping skin nourished, soft and supple! Its invisible matte formula also applies smoothly and stays on all day long! How to Use: Apply a generous amount of sunscreen to your face and neck every morning, even on cloudy days. Step 5: Weekly Treatment – Exfoliator A weekly treatment like an exfoliator can provide essential extra care for sensitive skin. And I know you might be thinking exfoliating sounds counterintuitive, after all you don’t want to exacerbate your already irritated skin, right? The thing is exfoliating is essential for everyone, no matter your skin type. Why? Because it removes dulling dead skin cells, prevents clogged pores and encourages cell turnover, you just have to be careful what sort of exfoliator you use! Try: Naturys Sensitive Enzymatic Peeling Cream. Formulated for all skin types including those suffering with common skin sensitivities, this exfoliant and regenerating cream gently removes dead cells and unclogs the pores without causing any irritation. As you work the cream into your skin, the pineapple and papaya enzymes, combined with AHAs and rice microgranules, gently but deeply exfoliate skin eliminating impurities, blackheads, dead cells, sebum and toxins. Your complexion after? Softer, smoother, calmer and brighter! How to Use: Apply the peel 1-2 times a week onto the face and delicately massage. Leave on for 5-7 minutes and rinse with warm water. Avoid the eye contours. Additional tips for sensitive skin Patch Test New Products: Always test new products on a small area of your skin before applying them to your entire face to ensure you don’t have an adverse reaction. Avoid Harsh Ingredients: Steer clear of products with alcohol, fragrances, and harsh exfoliants. Look for labels that indicate "hypoallergenic" and "non-comedogenic." Stay Hydrated and Maintain a Healthy Diet: Drinking plenty of water and eating a balanced diet rich in antioxidants can help support your skin's health. Remember taking care of sensitive skin doesn’t have to be daunting. By following this ultimate skincare routine and using gentle, effective products, you can reduce irritation, strengthen your skin barrier, and achieve a calm, radiant complexion. Remember consistency and patience are key!

Sensitive skin, rosacea or redness? Which do you have?

Sensitive skin, rosacea or redness? Which do you have?

by Jo Boyden on Apr 12 2024
Suffering from sensitive skin? Or is it rosacea perhaps? or maybe you are just prone to frequent redness and facial flushing? Identifying which of these common skin concerns you may have can be somewhat confusing, especially since they often share similar symptoms. But understanding their differences is essential as each condition can affect the skin in various ways!Keep reading as we outline the differences between sensitive skin, rosacea and facial redness, helping you to determine the most effective treatment approach for your skin’s specific needs! ROSACEAUnderstanding RosaceaRosacea is a chronic inflammatory skin condition characterised by redness, flushing, visible blood vessels, and sometimes acne-like bumps (papules and pustules). It typically affects the central part of the face, including the cheeks, nose, chin, and forehead. While the exact cause of rosacea is unknown, factors such as genetics, environmental triggers, and an overactive immune system may contribute to its development. Common triggers include sun exposure, hot or spicy foods, alcohol, stress, and certain skincare products.Managing RosaceaUnfortunately it’s not possible to eliminate rosacea altogether but you can effectively manage it and keep symptoms at bay! To manage rosacea you need to identify and avoid your triggers that can exacerbate symptoms.Unfortunately. sun exposure is the most common trigger for rosacea. While we may all love long days at the beach, if you suffer from rosacea your skin sadly will pay a price. Not only can sunburn make flare-ups even worse, the heat from the sun can also increase your body temperature which in turn dilates blood vessels and triggers inflammation! So you’ll want to make sure you avoid direct sun exposure as much as you can and wear SPF daily. Just be sure to opt for sensitive skin formulations that won’t aggravate your rosacea.Try Hubislab Herb 8 Soothing Blemish Balm SPF 30 PA++. It soothes and regenerates sensitive skin while protecting skin against sun damage, premature skin ageing including dark spots, and other external factors. Its clever formulation of Zinc oxide, UVA and UVB protection and 8 herbal extracts also ensures the prevention of wrinkles and inflammation.Gentle skincare products formulated for rosacea prone skin, free of harsh ingredients such as fragrance, alcohol, and abrasive exfoliants, are also a must!Look for products such as rosacea serum formulated with calming and soothing ingredients like green tea, licorice extract, chamomile extract, and French rose extract. We highly recommend Pevonia’s best-selling RS2 rosacea skincare line – a soothing, calming and irritant free collection that not only alleviates redness and discomfort but also helps create a healthy skin barrier. What’s more for the month of APRIL. When you purchase the Pevonia rosacea RS2 Care Cream, you’ll receive the matching Cleanser and Lotion 50ml for FREE. SENSITIVE SKINUnderstanding Sensitive SkinSensitive skin is a common skin condition characterised by heightened reactivity to environmental factors, skincare products, and other external irritants.Symptoms may include redness, itching, burning, stinging, and tightness.Sensitive skin can be caused by a variety of factors, including genetics, allergies, skin barrier dysfunction, and exposure to harsh chemicals or environmental pollutants.Managing Sensitive SkinSensitive skin requires gentle care and attention to maintain its health and balance. From choosing the right skincare products to adopting lifestyle habits that promote skin resilience, you can manage sensitive skin effectively.First things first, you need to manage sensitive skin by using gentle, non-irritating skincare products that are free of potential allergens, fragrances, dyes, and other irritating ingredients. Opt for mild, fragrance-free cleansers, serums and moisturisers formulated specifically for sensitive skin and pay particular attention to moisturising. You want to keep your skin hydrated and nourished with gentle, hydrating serums and moisturisers. Look for ingredients like hyaluronic acid, ceramides, and glycerin, which help maintain the skin's moisture barrier and chamomile to soothe. Our favourites: Hubislab Post Rays Chamomile Complex 70% ampoule. This deeply nourishing serum is formulated with 70% Chamomile, combined with other natural nourishing and soothing ingredients including Centella Asiatica, Hyaluronic Acid and Glycerin. It penetrates sensitive or irritated skin to calm, purify, protect and strengthen! Oh and it’s antibacterial and anti-inflammatory too!Medicalia Gentle Cream. Rich in natural Ceramides, Phospholipids, Green Tea, Glycerin and Chamomile, this calming, nourishing cream effectively infuses the skin with antioxidant, nourishing, soothing, and hydrating benefits. Day after day, it provides a noticeable reduction in skin redness and discomfort.Next you want to consider exfoliation. Remember exfoliating is important even if you have sensitive skin, but once a week will be sufficient. Over-exfoliating can over stimulate sensitive skin and exacerbate your already irritation condition. You’ll want to opt for gentle exfoliants with mild ingredients like fruit enzymes or polyhydroxy acids (PHAs) and avoid abrasive scrubs or harsh chemical exfoliants.Try the highly rated Phytomer Vegetal Exfoliant with natural enzymes. It’s a seriously soft, silky and subtly scented exfoliant perfect for sensitive skin and it eliminates impurities by gently removing dead skin cells with natural enzymes (so no scrubbing or irritating the skin whatsoever!) It encourages cell turnover, revealing beautifully luminous and youthful skin after every use – no jokes.Want to know more about exfoliation and sensitive skin and what to do? Click here. It’s also essential to protect your skin from harmful UV rays by wearing broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher daily, come rain, hail or shine! Choose mineral-based sunscreens containing zinc oxide or titanium dioxide, which are less likely to cause irritation. We LOVE Hubislab Post Rays UV Protect Sun Block SPF50+ PA+++ not only is it formulated with both zinc oxide and titanium dioxide so perfect for sensitive and ageing skin since zero irritation, it’s also rich in hydrolyzed Collagen and peptides keeping skin nourished, soft and supple! Its invisible matte formula also applies smoothly and stays on all day long!Additionally, maintaining a healthy lifestyle, including managing stress, staying hydrated, getting enough beauty sleep, eating a balanced diet rich in antioxidants and omega-3 fatty acids, and protecting the skin from environmental stressors can help reduce sensitivity and improve skin barrier function. FACIAL REDNESSUnderstanding RednessRedness, or erythema, is a common skin concern characterised by the appearance of red or flushed skin. It can be caused by various factors, including rosacea, sensitive skin, sunburn, allergies, irritation, inflammation, and underlying medical conditions. Redness may be temporary or chronic, depending on the underlying cause and triggers.Managing RednessManaging redness involves identifying and addressing the underlying cause. In addition to following a gentle skincare routine suitable for sensitive skin, incorporating anti-inflammatory ingredients such as green tea extract, niacinamide, and licorice root extract may help calm redness and soothe irritated skin. Sun protection is also crucial, as UV exposure can worsen redness and inflammation. When it comes to your red face you need to start with the basics – choose a mild, hydrating cleanser. Harsh cleansers can strip your skin of its natural oils, leading to increased redness and irritation. Cleanse with care, using lukewarm water to avoid shocking your skin.Try: Pevonia Sensitive Skin Cleanser. This beautifully light-textured cleanser gently removes accumulated impurities, while diffusing redness and irritation. Formulated with Chamomile and Calendula it delivers soothing, calming and desensitizing benefits to your delicate skin.If your skin redness is potentially caused by dryness or inflammation a natural face mask or sheet mask specifically formulated to cool and calm skin can work wonders too!Try: ELES Calming and Soothing Sheet Mask. Incorporating natural botanicals it soothes and reduces inflammation. Like a cool balm, this calming mask reduces redness and heat and restores a protective barrier to prevent moisture loss.WE totally understand that when you suffer from rosacea or skin redness you aren’t likely to forego makeup altogether. You do need to let your skin breath freely to reduce irritation though so its essential to opt for mineral makeup that will allow just this. Mineral makeup is non-comedogenic which means it won’t clog your pores.Try: ELES Mineral Powder Foundation. As a sufferer of want for a better word ‘flushed skin’ I personally LOVE the best-selling ELES Mineral Powder Foundation! It’s one of my all-time favourites. And let’s face it we don’t want our makeup to slide off our skin and reveal a flushed complexion at any point right? Plus wearing a primer also creates a barrier between your skin and your makeup therefore preventing any further irritation. If you’re prone to a flushed face we can’t get enough of ELES Retexture Crème Face Primer, it hydrates, soothes, calms and plumps skin with Aloe Barbadensis Gel, Chamomile Extract, Witch Hazel & Marigold. And finally when your face is feeling particularly fiery, try a cold compress. How Korean Skincare will transform your skin

by Jo Boyden on Mar 22 2024
I’m sure I’m correct in saying we’ve all heard about the K-beauty phenomenon! From dewy complexions to flawless makeup looks, this skincare trend is taking the beauty world by storm, but exactly what is #kbeauty and why is it trending? Well we are here to answer all your burning k-beauty questions! Keep reading as we divulge all there is to know about Korean skincare, how it will transform your complexion and the best Korean skincare products in Australia! What is k-beauty?K-beauty, short for Korean beauty, refers to the skincare and cosmetics products, techniques, and trends originating from South Korea. Renowned for its innovative formulations, advanced technology, and holistic approach to skincare, Korean skincare has gained immense popularity worldwide. It encompasses a wide range of products, including cleansers, creams, serums, essences and sheet masks, each designed to address specific skin concerns and enhance your natural beauty. K-beauty emphasizes achieving healthy, radiant skin through consistent routines, gentle ingredients, and a blend of traditional Korean philosophies and modern scientific advancements! Why is Korean skincare trending?Renowned for its innovative formulations (From traditional herbal extracts like ginseng and green tea to cutting-edge ingredients like hyaluronic acid and snail mucin), its holistic approach, and undeniable results, Korean skincare has become more than just a trend – it's a lifestyle. Korean skincare embraces the idea of "skinimalism," focusing on achieving healthy, radiant skin through a curated routine tailored to your individual needs. From double cleansing and layering multiple products to embracing sheet masks and essence, each step is carefully choreographed to cleanse, nourish and protect the skin, leaving it supple, hydrated and glowing with vitality.K-beauty’s multi-step approach has not escaped criticism though, with some claiming the use of multiple products (a 10 step routine in some cases) is “too much for the skin”. Of course this could be the case when using Western formulations which may contain a high percentage of stimulating actives, but it is important to note that Korean skincare and Western skincare are not formulated the same, and trying to use Korean philosophy with Western skincare products can be overwhelming for the skin. While Western skincare is all about targeting specific concerns with potent targeted ingredients, Korean philosophy is all about hydration and reducing inflammation that leads to ageing. So what makes Korean skincare different to western skincare? Multi-step routine Korean skincare popularized a comprehensive routine, with steps like double cleansing, toning, essence, serum, moisturizer, and sunscreen. Professional grade Korean skincare prioritise professional grade formulations using high concentrations of quality ingredients for outstanding results every time. Emphasis on hydration Korean skincare prioritizes hydration with ingredients like hyaluronic acid and ceramides, aiming for a dewy, "glass skin" look. Preventative approach Korean skincare focuses on preventing issues with regular sunscreen use and anti-aging ingredients. Gentle formulations Korean skincare offers mild products suitable for sensitive skin, made with natural ingredients. Innovative ingredients Korean brands use cutting-edge technology, like fermented extracts, snail mucin and plant-based stem cells, for targeted results. Holistic beauty Korean skincare promotes inner and outer health, including diet, hydration, sleep, and stress management, alongside skincare for radiant skin. Why follow the 10-Step k-beauty skincare routine? Designed to truly pamper and nourish the skin, this comprehensive 10 step routine may seem daunting at first but it offers a customizable approach to skincare, allowing individuals to tailor their routine based on their skin type, concerns, and preferences. From cleansing and exfoliating to toning, treating, and moisturizing, each step plays a vital role in achieving radiant, youthful-looking skin. Still wondering why Korean skincare is for you? by Jo Boyden on Nov 16 2023
If you’re one of many with sensitive skin, you’ll understand the struggle when it comes to finding the perfect skincare and makeup routine that won't lead to redness, inflammation, and discomfort.Sensitive skin requires a gentle approach, and a carefully curated daily routine with products designed to calm, soothe and protect can help you achieve that coveted healthy glow without irritation. Keep reading as we discuss the best skincare and makeup routine, specifically tailored just for your sensitive skin. Skincare routine for sensitive skin Identify your skin concerns First things first, understanding your specific skin concerns is crucial for tailoring your skincare routine. Sensitive skin can manifest in various ways, including dryness, redness, itchiness, and irritation. Know your triggers Specific ingredients and environmental factors can trigger skin sensitivity. Everything from fragrances and preservatives in soaps, beauty products and laundry detergents to the cold, sun and wind can cause skin irritation. Learn to know which are your triggers. To learn more about why you could be suffering from sensitive skin click here. Always choose gentle products with calming ingredients Opt for fragrance-free, hypoallergenic, and non-comedogenic products to minimize the risk of irritation. And always check the ingredients. You want your skincare products to be formulated with ingredients that soothe and nourish sensitive skin, such as aloe vera, chamomile, calendula and ceramides. These natural extracts have anti-inflammatory properties that can help soothe sensitive skin and reduce redness. Gentle Cleansing Now it's time to start your routine! Begin with your gentle cleanser designed for sensitive skin, which means it’ll be free from alcohol and harsh ingredients. Remember cleansing should be a soothing experience, not one that leaves your skin feeling tight and irritated!Try: Medicalia Gentle cleanser. Formulated with a unique natural blend of soothing Green Tea, Chamomile, and Oat Amino Acids, it beautifully cleanses skin both thoroughly and gently while preserving the skin barrier and reducing symptoms of inflammation too!“This cleanser is perfect for my super sensitive skin. Love it. Have been using for years.” Jane Hydration is key Keeping your skin well hydrated is crucial for sensitive skin (as it is with all skin types!) Just be sure to choose a lightweight, non-comedogenic moisturiser that provides optimal hydration without clogging pores.Try: Phytomer Douceur Intemporelle Restorative Shield Cream. It’s an outstanding comforting cream with a beautifully light consistency which literally rescues skin by strengthening its protective barrier. It soothes, calms and comforts skin, conveniently remedying red patches.“I LOVE this cream. It feels wonderful when applied and I've noticed how much smoother and more radiant my sensitive skin is. Highly recommend!” Jo G Don’t forget your soothing serum Serums are essential in any skincare routine because they deliver vital active ingredients to the dermis quickly. Think of a serum as the secret weapon for treating skin issues like discolouration, dullness, fine lines, acne and of course skin sensitivities!Try: Pevonia Soothing Propolis Concentrate. For a truly nurturing, soothing serum this should be your go-to. It literally bathes skin in calming lavender and healing propolis from the Jura Mountains of France, decongesting, enriching, alleviating and strengthening fragile skin.“Truly Amazing. I knew this was the best healing treatment for my face when I ran out of it for a couple of weeks, something I'll never do again. Keeps my ultra-sensitive complexion creamy and cool. Love Propolis — and it smells divine!” Susanna V Formulations that include hyaluronic acid can also be game-changing as it attracts and retains moisture keeping skin nourished, plum, soothed and supple.Try: Pevonia Hyaluronic Acid Hydra Serum“I have just started using this serum and the results are already noticeable. My skin is so much more youthful! Smoother, plumper and visibly radiant! I couldn’t recommend more highly!!” Mary C Wear sunscreen every. single. day Protecting your sensitive skin from the sun's harmful UV rays is imperative so sun protection is non-negotiable, especially since UV rays can exacerbate sensitivity leading to redness and irritation.Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen of at least SPF 30 and you’re best to go for physical sunscreens like zinc or titanium dioxide. Fragrance-free formulas and those that are free of ingredients like phthalates and parabens will also reduce your exposure to formulas that might irritate your skin. Be sure to reapply if you are outside for a long period of time!Try: Medicalia Sunscreen SPF 40 with Blue Light Shield.“Love this product it gives all day sun protection doesn’t mark clothing and gives my skin a healthy glow I’m hooked!” Jan C Exfoliate skin but don’t over-exfoliate! Exfoliation is essential, even for those of us with sensitive skin. This is because exfoliating can promote cell regeneration, unclog pores and improve skin texture. The problem is, that exfoliation can come with risks of irritation, inflammation and dryness, so it is essential to choose the right exfoliators! Then there is also the issue of over-exfoliation, which can strip the skin's natural barrier leading to increased sensitivity. So if you have sensitive skin, start by limiting its use to only once a week and use a gentle exfoliator with mild exfoliating agents like fruit acids or enzymes. For more on exfoliation and sensitive skin and what to do click here. Stay consistent And finally, consistency is key when it comes to caring for your sensitive skin. Once you’ve found what works, stick to it and daily.Aside from your skincare routine, there are also other things you can do to help calm your sensitive skin. Stress less, sleep more and watch what you eat. Certain foods and drinks can contribute to your skin's sensitivities. Limit spicy foods, caffeine and alcohol, and feast on a diet rich in antioxidants and omega-3 fatty acids to promote skin health from within. Makeup tips for sensitive skinNow you’ve got your skincare routine down pat, it's time to master your makeup! Check ingredients As with your skincare routine, make sure you opt for "non-comedogenic" makeup to prevent pore-clogging and potential breakouts. You’ll also want to invest in fragrance free formulas as artificial scents can be a common trigger for sensitivity. Mineral Makeup is best. Clean makeup brushes regularly We all know dirty brushes can harbour bacteria which in turn can further irritate already irritated skin! Make sure you clean your makeup brushes regularly! To learn more about how often you should clean and replace your makeup brushes click here. Less is more Yes, we want to conceal sensitive skin whether it be facial redness or unwanted blemishes, but just remember less is always more!Simply minimise the number of makeup layers you apply to your face to reduce the risk of irritation and if you’re suffering from facial redness, try using a multi-tasking CC cream.Unlike tinted moisturisers, foundations and even BB Creams, these miracle formulas are colour correcting. So instead of applying a thick layer of opaque makeup to cover the redness, the CC Cream’s Photonic Crystal Technology “offsets” redness, wrinkles and other skin imperfections, subtly illuminating the skin. This means less coverage is required if any at all. In fact, men can and do use CC Creams to even out their skin tone as it doesn’t look like makeup.Try: ELES Luminous CC Cream 20, you’ll be so glad you did!“I’m loving my new CC Cream! I was recommended it by a friend as I suffer from facial redness and sensitive skin and this product does an amazing job at colour correcting so the redness is beautifully concealed but my skin feels calm with a nice natural glow at the same time. Would highly recommend it.” Sarah MIf colour correction isn’t something you need make sure you go for a breathable, lightweight liquid formula.Try; best-selling ELES Liquid Powder Mineral Foundation. It’s silky, mineral-enriched and provides skin with broad spectrum sun protection. Its liquid formulation glides beautifully onto sensitive skin setting as a soft, powder finish, however it does not clog skin! Brilliant stuff. “The ELES liquid to powder is PHENOMENAL. I will never try another foundation. The foundation smooths over your skin so easily, providing good medium coverage, evening out skin tone, its completely non-irritating, and doesn't clog my skin.” Lucy G Patch test It’s always a good idea to patch test any new makeup products when it comes to sensitive or reactive skin, before applying all over your face! Remove makeup before bed And finally, always remember to remove your makeup before bed no matter how lazy you might be feeling! Use a gentle, fragrance-free makeup remover or micellar water. Nighttime is when your skin goes into repair mode, so it needs to be free of any pore clogging dirt and grime!
