Confused about face oil? Here's everything you need to know

by Jo Boyden on Jul 24 2026
Once thought to be only for dry, mature skin, face oils have become one of the biggest skincare staples in recent years, but also one of the most misunderstood! And with so much conflicting advice online, it's no wonder so many of us aren't quite sure how or when to use a face oil, or even if it’s necessary at all! The truth is, the right face oil can transform the way your skin looks and feels. Really. Whether you're looking to boost hydration, strengthen your skin barrier, calm irritation or achieve that healthy, radiant glow, understanding how face oils work is the key to getting the best results. Keep reading for everything you need to know.   Firstly, exactly what does a face oil actually do? Despite the name, face oils don't simply "add oil" to your skin. Instead, they help to seal in hydration, strengthen your skin barrier and reduce moisture loss, leaving skin feeling softer, smoother and more comfortable. Many are also rich in essential fatty acids, antioxidants and vitamins that help nourish the skin while supporting a healthy, radiant complexion. It is important to understand, however, that oil and hydration are not quite the same thing. While your serums deliver active ingredients and your moisturiser hydrates the skin, a face oil helps lock all that goodness in! This is why oils often work best as the final nourishing layer in a well-rounded routine rather than as a replacement for every other skincare step. Think of a face oil as the finishing touch to your skincare routine!   Do you need a face oil in your routine? Not everyone needs one, but many people can benefit from adding one to their routine. A face oil can be especially helpful if you have: Dry or dehydrated skin Mature or menopausal skin A compromised skin barrier Skin that feels tight after cleansing Dull or lacklustre skin Skin exposed to harsh winter weather or air conditioning If your skin often feels comfortable, balanced and well hydrated, you may not need to use a face oil every day. But during winter, after travel or whenever your skin feels particularly dry or stressed, it can provide an extra boost of nourishment.   Are you applying your face oil in the right order? This is probably the question we get asked most! Face oil should almost always be the last step in your skincare routine, after your serum and moisturiser. Why? Because oil creates a protective layer over the skin, helping to reduce moisture loss. If you apply it before your water-based serums or moisturiser, it can make it harder for those products to absorb properly. A simple daily routine would include a cleanser, toner (if using), serum, moisturiser and finally your face oil.   Should you use a face oil in the morning or at night? The answer is... either! Many people prefer applying a face oil at night, allowing it to nourish and replenish the skin while they sleep. However, if your skin feels particularly dry or you're after a healthy, radiant glow, a lightweight face oil can also work beautifully during the day beneath sunscreen and makeup. You can even add a drop or two to your makeup!   Can oily or acne-prone skin use a face oil? Absolutely! This is one of the biggest misconceptions about face oils sadly! So many people with oily, combination or blemish prone skin miss out of this essential step because they believe a face oil will only exacerbate their oily, reactive skin. The key is choosing a lightweight, non-comedogenic formula that's suited to your skin type! In fact, stripping oily skin with harsh products can often make matters worse, causing the skin to produce even more oil to compensate. The right face oil can actually help support a healthier skin barrier and improve overall skin balance.   Can you use a face oil every day? Yes. If your skin enjoys it, a face oil can absolutely become part of your daily skincare routine. Some people prefer using it morning and night, while others reserve it for evenings or during winter when their skin needs a little extra nourishment. The best approach is to listen to your skin!   Can you use a face oil with retinol? Yes, and they actually work beautifully together! Retinol can sometimes leave skin feeling dry or tight, particularly when you're first introducing it into your routine. Applying a face oil after your moisturiser can help comfort the skin and reduce moisture loss without affecting your retinol. It is best not to mix your retinol and facial oil together unless the brand specifically advises doing so, as this can make it harder to control how much retinol you are applying. If you are new to retinol or your skin is sensitive, introduce it slowly and avoid layering too many active products in the same routine. Facial oil may make the skin feel more comfortable, but it will not prevent irritation caused by using retinol too frequently or at too high a strength.   Can you mix face oil with foundation? You certainly can! Mixing one small drop of face oil into your liquid foundation can help create a fresher, more radiant finish, particularly if your makeup tends to look dry or cakey during winter. Just don't overdo it, too much oil can reduce the longevity of your makeup.   How many drops should you use? Remember less is always more. For most people, 2–4 drops is all you need for your face and neck. Using more won't necessarily deliver better results and may simply leave skin feeling greasy   Our favourite face oils (and the ones our customers love too!) Now that you know how and when to use one, these are three of our favourite formulas for adding softness, nourishment and radiance to the skin.   Phytomer Rosee Soin Radiance Replenishing Oil If dull, tired-looking skin is your biggest concern, this luxurious botanical oil helps replenish moisture while restoring radiance and leaving skin beautifully soft and luminous. "I love this product. It makes my skin feel soft and supple and gives it a beautiful glow. I suffer from redness and this helps to soothe my skin. Amazing product." — Jenny   Pevonia De-Stress Escape Aromatic Oil Perfect for stressed, dehydrated or combination skin, this beautifully aromatic facial oil nourishes without feeling heavy while helping restore comfort and balance. "Pevonia outdoes itself again! This product is wonderful. With its incredible scent and silky texture, it leaves skin feeling ultra soft and hydrated. It's great for my combination skin and has even helped with the maskne. My skin has never looked better. The De-Stress Escape Oil is my new favourite product!" — Anne E Pevonia Vitaminic Concentrate Often described as "liquid gold", this vitamin-rich concentrate is ideal for dry, mature or winter-weary skin, helping restore softness, comfort and a healthy-looking glow. "I love using Vitaminic Concentrate all year round, however especially in winter. You don't need much to transform dry skin into plump, hydrated, rejuvenated skin." — Donna Dezius   Face oils don't need to be complicated. Once you understand what they do, when to apply them and how they fit into your routine, they can become one of the most rewarding steps in your skincare routine. Whether you're looking to calm dryness, support your skin barrier, boost radiance or simply achieve a healthier-looking glow, the right face oil can make all the difference!

Why your makeup looks worse in winter and how to fix it

by Jo Boyden on Jul 22 2026
Every winter, it seems to happen to so many of us. Our foundation that looked flawless only weeks before starts to look patchy. Concealer suddenly seems to settle into fine lines we didn’t even know we had! And the powder that usually sets our makeup beautifully suddenly looks… cakey. But what’s changed? Especially when our trusted skincare and makeup routine hasn’t? Unfortunately, winter weather, dry wind, and indoor heating completely change the way our skin behaves and in turn, how our makeup sits on our skin too. Want to know why this is happening and, more importantly, how to fix it? Keep reading…   1. Your skin is drier or more dehydrated than you realise The mistake most people make is keeping the exact same skincare routine year-round without adjusting for the season (I have been guilty myself of this!) That lightweight gel moisturiser you so love, and that's perfect for humid summer months is likely not providing nearly enough hydration in winter, leaving skin parched and uneven by the time you reach for your foundation! Even if your skin doesn't feel particularly dry, winter almost always means less moisture in the skin. Cold air contains less humidity, while indoor heating draws even more moisture away from your complexion. As your skin becomes dehydrated, it loses some of its smooth, plump appearance, leaving foundation with tiny dry areas to cling to. That's why your makeup may suddenly look flaky around your nose, cheeks or forehead, despite using exactly the same products you did a few weeks ago. How to fix it Hydration starts with your skincare. Look for ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, marine hydrators, glycerin and ceramides that help both attract, replenish and retain moisture creating a smoother canvas for makeup application. Our top product picks Hubislab Moisture Max Hyaluron 65% Ampoule Featuring a whopping 65% hyaluronic acid complex, this ampoule is a hydration hero (literally) when it comes to your skin, attracting and locking in moisture, helping to plump fine dehydration lines, strengthen the skin barrier and leave your complexion looking smoother, fresher and more radiant. Lightweight and fast absorbing, it creates the perfect hydrated canvas for flawless makeup application. Vie Collection Mesoforce Hydra Revitalizing Cream Inspired by professional mesotherapy treatments, this intensely hydrating cream combines Ceramides 1, 3 & 6 II, Hyaluronic Acid, Phytosphingosine, Cholesterol, Provitamin B5 and Vitamins C & E to deeply replenish moisture while repairing and strengthening the skin barrier. The result? Skin that feels softer, smoother and more comfortable, with a plumper, healthier-looking complexion that's ready for makeup. Phytomer Hydrasea Thirst Relief Rehydrating Mask And intensive mask that quite literally feeds the skin with deep nourishment. You can literally feel your complexion tighten and plump in nearly and instant and the end result is youthfully restored skin.  2. Dry patches become much more obvious Dry, flaky patches under foundation are one of the most frustrating winter makeup issues, and the instinct to pile on more product to cover them almost always makes things worse! More foundation on a flaky patch just creates a more visible flaky patch! Winter slows down your skin's natural cell turnover, meaning dead skin cells accumulate more easily. These rough patches grab onto foundation, creating those tell-tale flaky areas that no amount of blending seems to fix. How to fix it Gentle exfoliation once or twice a week removes the dead skin cell buildup that creates those flaky patches in the first place, allowing skincare to absorb more effectively and giving your makeup a smoother surface to work with. Gentle exfoliating acids or enzyme exfoliants rather than harsh scrubs are ideal for winter, especially if your skin feels sensitive. Enzyme exfoliants dissolve dead cells without stripping the skin. Our top product picks Pevonia Gentle Exfoliating Cleanser If dry, flaky skin is causing your foundation to cling in all the wrong places, this gentle exfoliating cleanser is the perfect first step. Formulated with Jojoba Beads, Chamomile and Aloe Vera, it buffs away dull, flaky skin without irritation while soothing and hydrating the complexion. The result is skin that feels softer, smoother and perfectly prepped for makeup application. Phytomer Vegetal Exfoliant with Natural Enzymes If your foundation is catching on dry, flaky patches, this gentle enzyme exfoliant is a winter skincare essential! Formulated with Papain (Papaya Enzyme) to dissolve dead skin cells, together with Kaolin Clay, antioxidant Vitamin E and conditioning Laminaria Digitata (Brown Algae) Extract, it smooths rough texture without aggressive scrubbing. The result is softer, more refined skin and a beautifully even canvas that helps makeup glide on effortlessly. Tip: Also avoid setting dry areas with powder, powder on dry skin emphasises texture and dryness rather than concealing it. If you need to set your makeup, use powder only on the areas that genuinely need it (typically the T-zone) and leave drier areas untouched. And apply your foundation with a damp sponge. This temporarily softens and smooths the area, allowing foundation to sit far more evenly.   3. Your concealer looks patchy under your eyes Winter dehydration hits the under-eye area particularly hard (the skin here is the thinnest on the face and has almost no oil glands to help it retain moisture.) The result in winter is concealer that creases almost immediately, settles into fine lines and looks dry and cakey rather than bright and concealing. How to fix it Apply your eye cream first and give it a full minute to absorb before touching your concealer! Then apply a small amount of concealer with your ring finger (the gentlest of all your fingers) using a tapping rather than a rubbing motion. This prevents dragging the delicate skin and helps the product melt into the area rather than sitting on top of it. If creasing is a persistent problem, try applying a tiny amount of hydrating primer or even a dot of hyaluronic acid serum under your concealer before setting. Skip the powder under the eye entirely in winter, instead, gently press the concealer with your ring finger to set it naturally, which gives a more skin-like, less cakey finish. Our top product picks; Pevonia Age Correction Eye Contour This power repair eye contour gives tired, dehydrated eyes the burst of hydration they need! Deeply nourishing and decongesting thanks to its combination of marine collagen, hyaluronic acid, green tea and marine elastin, it firms and smooths skin while visibly reducing puffiness, dark circles and fine lines ELES Dual Action Concealer If your concealer has suddenly started settling into fine lines, this multi-tasking formula is well worth the switch. Infused with Peptides, Caffeine, vitamin C, vitamin e and Sodium Hyaluronate Crosspolymer, it hydrates and plumps the delicate eye area. It applies so smoothly (even when using your finger) and best of all no caking or sitting in your fine lines and wrinkles! What’s more light-reflecting pigments instantly brighten dark circles, leaving the under-eye area looking smoother, and fresher!  4. Your skin barrier needs extra support Your skin barrier is like your complexion's protective shield. During winter it works overtime defending against cold wind, low humidity and heated indoor environments. When that barrier becomes weakened, moisture escapes more easily and skin becomes rougher, tighter and often more sensitive. Makeup has a much harder time sitting smoothly on compromised skin. How to fix it Focus on repairing your barrier before trying to perfect your makeup. Ingredients such as ceramides, panthenol, squalane and nourishing botanical oils help restore comfort while improving the way foundation sits on the skin. Our top product picks Phytomer Douceur Intemporelle Restorative Shield Cream When winter leaves your skin feeling dry, tight or easily irritated, this comforting moisturiser helps restore calm and resilience. Formulated with Ceramides, Vitamin B5, Squalane and Shea Butter, it deeply nourishes while strengthening the skin barrier, reducing redness and helping protect against environmental stressors. Silky and luxurious without feeling heavy, it leaves skin feeling soothed, hydrated and beautifully comfortable. And if you are after a little (or should I say a lot of luxury) we can’t recommend enough the; Phytomer Perles Des Mers Longevity Cream If you're looking for the ultimate luxury winter moisturiser, this is it. Rich in Ceramides, Vitamin B3, bio-fermented marine micro-pearls, Chlorella, Brown Algae, Sea Lily and PHYTOMER's iconic Oligomer®, this indulgent balm-like cream combines intensive nourishment with barrier support to restore comfort, hydration, firmness and radiance all in one! It melts beautifully into the skin, leaving even the driest winter complexions looking smoother, healthier and beautifully revitalised. 5. You're rushing your skin prep This is one of the biggest mistakes people make. After applying your skincare, it's tempting to jump straight into foundation. But if your moisturiser or serum hasn't had time to absorb, makeup can slide around, pill or separate throughout the day. Equally, applying foundation onto skin that hasn't been moisturised enough can leave it looking flat and patchy almost immediately. How to fix it Allow your skincare to absorb for five to ten minutes before applying makeup. If your skin still feels tight, add another light layer of moisturiser rather than piling on more foundation.   6. You're skipping primer (or using the wrong one) If you're not using a primer this winter, now is the time to start! And if you are using one, it might be time to switch to a formula better suited to the season! Mattifying primers (brilliant in summer for controlling shine) can actually exacerbate dry patches in winter, drawing moisture away from already dehydrated skin and creating an even flakier base for foundation. What your skin needs instead is a hydrating, skin-conditioning primer that smooths the surface, fills in fine lines and creates a comfortable, plump base for makeup to adhere to. Product picks Retexture Crème Face Primer It’s a soothing, lightweight serum-like primer that protects, conditions, smooths and blurs imperfections, while deeply hydrating and calming the skin at the same time. It's enriched with aloe, chamomile, witch hazel and marigold, making it genuinely skin-caring rather than just a makeup step and in winter, that distinction matters enormously. Think of your primer as the bridge between your skincare and your makeup. Get this step right and everything that goes on top performs significantly better. If your skin is particularly dry, you may even find you need less foundation once your primer is doing its job properly. 7. Your foundation formula may need changing You’ve likely become loyal to your foundation, just as we do with our skincare but a matte or long-wear formula that performs beautifully during humid summer months may suddenly feel too drying during winter. For winter, it’s best to use a foundation with a satin or dewy finish rather than matte, as these are more forgiving on drier skin and less likely to emphasise texture. Formulas containing hydrating ingredients (again hyaluronic acid, glycerin, botanical oils) that actively moisturise the skin while you wear them, rather than sitting on top of it. Product picks ELES HD Mineral Satin Foundation SPF15 Infused with Hyaluronic Acid, Squalane, Green Tea and Marigold Extract, this lightweight mineral foundation helps keep skin comfortable and hydrated while delivering buildable coverage with a beautiful satin finish. Light-reflecting mineral pigments softly blur pores and imperfections, leaving your complexion looking smooth, fresh and naturally radiant all day. ELES Mineral Glow Skin Tint SPF15 Perfect for those who prefer a lighter, more natural finish, this mineral skin tint delivers sheer, buildable coverage with a healthy, dewy glow. Enriched with Hyaluronic Acid, Squalane, Glycerin and antioxidant-rich botanical extracts including Pomegranate, Sea Buckthorn, Kiwi and Cucumber, it hydrates and nourishes the skin while evening out the complexion. Mineral SPF15 provides everyday protection, making it the perfect choice when your winter skin needs a little extra moisture and radiance without feeling heavy. Both of our recommended foundations provide beautiful coverage while maintaining a more natural, radiant finish that's particularly flattering during the cooler months. That said, you don't necessarily need to replace your foundation altogether, you could just try and mix a drop of hydrating serum for a softer finish. If you find your usual foundation is still looking patchy despite good prep, try applying it with a damp beauty sponge rather than a brush. A damp sponge sheers out the product more evenly, deposits less into fine lines and dry patches, and gives a more natural, skin-like finish that's particularly flattering on winter skin.   8. Less really is more When your makeup doesn't look quite right, it's easy to keep adding more product. More foundation.More concealer.More powder. Unfortunately, every extra layer only emphasises texture, dryness and fine lines. Instead, focus on beautifully prepared skin and apply thin, lightweight layers where you actually need them. You'll often achieve a far more natural, youthful-looking result.   A few final winter makeup tips worth knowing Don't skip SPF. It feels counterintuitive in winter but UV exposure continues year-round and is one of the biggest drivers of the uneven, dull skin tone that makes foundation look worse. An SPF underneath your makeup is non-negotiable. Mist throughout the day. A hydrating facial mist spritzed over your finished makeup not only refreshes your look midday but adds a layer of hydration that helps everything sit better. Look for one with hyaluronic acid or rosewater rather than a setting spray, which can be drying. Less powder, more pressing. In winter, powder is your makeup's enemy. Use as little as possible, apply only where you genuinely need it, and press rather than sweep it on to avoid disturbing the layers underneath. Warm your products before applying. Cold foundation applied straight from a cool bathroom applies less evenly than product that's been warmed slightly between your fingertips first. A small thing that makes a noticeable difference.   If your makeup has suddenly started looking dry, patchy or cakey this winter, don't be too quick to replace every product in your makeup bag. More often than not, your skin is simply asking for a little extra care. By boosting hydration, supporting your skin barrier, gently exfoliating and taking a little more time with your skin prep, you'll create the smooth canvas your makeup needs to perform at its best!
Dry winter skin? 7 mistakes you might be making (and how to fix them)

Dry winter skin? 7 mistakes you might be making (and how to fix them)

by Jo Boyden on Jun 24 2026
If your skin suddenly feels tight, flaky, or just…uncomfortable the moment winter hits, it’s not just the change in season to blame! Cold air, indoor heating, and harsh winds can of course wreak havoc on our skin, but surprisingly, some of our everyday habits can make things so much worse! From using the wrong moisturiser to skipping SPF, these common mistakes can weaken our skin barrier and leave our complexion dehydrated, flaky and irritated! Keep reading as we reveal the 7 most common mistakes that could be drying out your skin this winter, and exactly how to fix them. Why is your skin so dry in winter? Before we get into the mistakes, it helps to understand what's actually happening to your skin when the temperature drops. Cold air holds significantly less moisture than warm air, which means every time you step outside in winter, the air is actively drawing hydration away from your skin. Step back inside and you're met with heating, which does exactly the same thing (just in a warmer environment). Add wind exposure, hot showers and the natural slowdown in oil production that cooler temperatures cause, and your skin's moisture barrier is under attack from almost every direction! The result is a barrier that becomes progressively more compromised and less able to hold onto water, more reactive to products, and slower to repair itself! Most of the mistakes below make this worse without people ever realising it.   7 mistakes you could be making Mistake 1: Your showers are too hot Who isn’t guilt of turning up the heat in that steamy shower when the weather is cold outside? It's one of the most understandable and of course common habits! Unfortunately, hot water strips the skin of its natural oils far more aggressively far more than we’d like to think, compromising your moisture barrier and leaving skin feeling tight and dry within minutes of stepping out. The fix: Turn the temperature down (yes of course that’s obviously but the difference from a hot, hot shower to a warm shower (still lovely of course) can make a significant difference, and better still try to keep showers to around five minutes. The as soon as you get out apply your body (and face) moisturiser within a few minutes while your skin is still slightly damp, this trick locks in the residual moisture rather than letting it evaporate. Try: Pevonia Preserve Body Moisturiser   This lightweight, yet deeply nourishing body cream is packed with soothing and repairing botanicals, Vitamins B, C and E, and Alpha Hydroxy Acids. Gently massage into skin and see how it instantly improves your skin’s texture! Wonderfully hydrating it locks in goodness, restoring elasticity and leaving skin silky-soft and radiant.   Mistake 2: You're using the same cleanser you use in summer You might well love your current cleanser, the faithful product you’ve been using for years, but a foaming or gel cleanser that works beautifully in summer can become too stripping in winter, particularly if your skin is already dry or your barrier is compromised. If your skin feels tight immediately after cleansing, your cleanser is very likely the culprit! The fix: Switch to a gentle, non-foaming cream or milk cleanser for the colder months. These cleanse effectively without disrupting the skin's natural oils, leaving your barrier intact and your skin comfortable rather than squeaky clean. If you're not ready to change your cleanser entirely, try using it only morning or night. Try: Pevonia Hydrating Cleanser Thanks to its outstanding combination of marine collagen, marine elastin, hyaluronic acid and glycerin, this nourishing, creamy textured cleanser thoroughly removes skin impurities and excess oil without any residue, all whilst helping to preserve your skin’s moisture too! Mistake 3: You're skipping the hydrating serum and going straight to moisturiser This is one of the most common mistakes we see and it means your moisturiser is working much harder than it needs to. Moisturisers are designed to seal in hydration (from your shower or serum), not magically create it from nowhere. Without a hydrating serum underneath, you're skipping the step that actually hydrates your skin (so your moisturiser has nothing to seal in.) The fix: Add a hydrating serum (ideally one containing hyaluronic acid) underneath your moisturiser, and apply it to slightly damp skin for the best results. This gives your moisturiser actual hydration to lock in, and the difference in how your skin feels throughout the day is usually immediate and noticeable. Try: Pevonia Hyaluronic Acid Hydra Serum The ultimate for seriously thirsty skin, this serum eliminates dryness almost instantly as it quite literally blasts even the most dehydrated of complexions with a surge of moisture, maintaining surface hydration throughout the day. By adding moisture back into your skin, this serum immediately boosts skin’s suppleness and combats ageing in multiple ways thanks to its skin-plumping properties.  Mistake 4: You've switched to a heavier moisturiser but your skin is still dry Reaching for a richer moisturiser when skin feels dry is the most logical response we know and in theory it’s what you should be doing since the lighter moisturisers we use in the summer is never usually enough, but if your skin barrier is already compromised, a heavy cream can sit on top of the skin rather than absorbing into it, making skin feel temporarily better without actually addressing the underlying dehydration. The fix: Look for a moisturiser that contains barrier-repairing ingredients like ceramides and fatty acids alongside your hydrating actives. These don't just add moisture they help rebuild the barrier so your skin can start retaining hydration on its own again. Layering a facial oil over your moisturiser at night is also a highly effective way to reduce overnight water loss and wake up with noticeably more comfortable skin. Try: Phytomer Nutritionelle Dry Skin Rescue Cream Salvation for even the most dry as a desert skin! This intense therapy cream infused with Ceramides (NP, AP, EOP) and a cocktail of marine and plant oils including organic glasswort, organic buckwheat, apricot kernel, shea butter and hydrafusion, provides immediate relief, comfort and visible improvement to dry skin. Say goodbye to tight, uncomfortable and parched skin and hello to a suppler, soft and visibly plumped complexion!   Mistake 5: You've stopped exfoliating, or you're doing it too often This one goes both ways. Some people avoid exfoliation entirely in winter because their skin feels sensitive, which allows a buildup of dead skin cells that prevents everything else in their routine from absorbing properly. Others over-exfoliate in an attempt to remove flaky, dry patches, which strips the barrier further and worsens the problem. The fix: Keep exfoliation in your routine but reduce frequency if needed, once a week is often enough in winter for most skin types. Choose a gentle chemical exfoliant over a physical scrub, as these dissolve dead cells without the physical friction that can aggravate already-sensitised skin. If your skin is particularly reactive, a low-concentration lactic acid is one of the gentlest options available and has the added benefit of drawing moisture into the skin as it exfoliates. Try: Phytomer Vegetal Exfoliant with Natural Enzymes This soft, yet highly effective exfoliant for even the most sensitive or rosacea prone skin, uses natural enzymes to encourage cell turnover without scrubbing or irritating skin. It’s a Phytomer global best-seller and for good reason! Mistake 6: You've stopped wearing SPF It's a deeply common misconception that SPF is only necessary in summer or on sunny days (even though you know I tell you to wear SPF daily come rain, hail or shine!). UV rays (particularly UVA rays, which are responsible for premature ageing and pigmentation) are present year-round, penetrate through cloud cover, and come through glass, which means your skin is exposed even when you're sitting near a window indoors (crazy right?) The fix: SPF doesn't stop at the end of summer. A broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher every single morning is non-negotiable regardless of the season, and in winter it becomes even more important if you're using actives like retinol or acids that increase sun sensitivity. If the texture of your usual SPF feels too heavy in winter, look for a hydrating SPF that doubles as a moisturiser, it simplifies your routine and removes the barrier to using it consistently. Try: Hubislab Post Rays UV Protect Sun Block 50g SPF50 If you've ever skipped sunscreen because it feels heavy, greasy or leaves a white cast, this may change your mind. Hubislab's Post Rays UV Protect Sun Block combines broad-spectrum SPF50+ protection with a lightweight, breathable texture that absorbs quickly and leaves skin feeling comfortable all day. Suitable for all skin types, including sensitive and reactive skin, it also contains soothing botanical extracts and antioxidants to help calm, protect and support the skin barrier. The added tone-up effect gives skin a healthy, radiant finish, making it an excellent everyday sunscreen and makeup base. Mistake 7: You're drinking less water and not compensating topically Cold weather suppresses the sensation of thirst, which means most of us are mildly dehydrated throughout winter without realising it! Unfortunately, dehydration shows up in the skin quickly, increasing the appearance of fine lines, making skin look dull and flat, and making dry patches harder to shift no matter what you apply topically! The fix: Now you know this, make a conscious effort to maintain your water intake through winter even when you don't feel thirsty! If you simply can’t bring yourself to drink another glass of water, herbal teas are an excellent way to keep yourself hydrated!   Dry winter skin is extremely common but it's rarely inevitable. More often than not, a few small adjustments to your routine and habits make a significant difference without needing to overhaul everything at once. Start with the mistakes that sound most like yours, make one or two changes, and give your skin two to three weeks to respond before reassessing. I promise you’ll notice a significant difference!

Tired eyes? Here’s how to look instantly more awake

by Jo Boyden on Jun 12 2026
Have you ever looked in the mirror after what felt like a decent night's sleep and thought, "Why do I still look exhausted?" Mid-year burnout is real. Add cold winter weather, indoor heating, dehydration, stress and the occasional late night into the mix, and suddenly the eye area can start looking darker, puffier and far more tired than it did just a few weeks ago! In fact, dark circles and tired eyes are some of the most common concerns we hear about at Beauty Collective. Many people assume they need injectables or more invasive treatments to see real improvement, but the reality is, you don’t. With the right ingredients, a few clever techniques and targeted eye care products, it's possible to brighten, smooth and revive tired-looking eyes naturally and often surprisingly fast! Keep reading as we discuss what's really going on around your eye area, why winter often makes things look worse and the best non-invasive ways to look instantly more awake!   Firstly, what causes dark circles and tired eyes? Despite what many people think, dark circles aren't always caused by lack of sleep. Some of the most common causes include: Dehydration When skin lacks hydration, the eye area can appear dull, sunken and more shadowed. Ageing As skin becomes thinner and loses volume, dark circles often become more visible. Genetics For some people, dark circles are hereditary and naturally more prominent. Poor circulation Reduced circulation can contribute to under-eye darkness and puffiness. Lifestyle factors Stress and long hours in front of screens can all contribute to tired-looking eyes. Why do your eyes look so fatigued? To fix tired eyes, we first need to understand what’s going on beneath the surface. The skin around your eyes behaves completely differently from the rest of your face because; It’s incredibly thin The skin here is up to ten times thinner than the skin on your cheeks or forehead. Because it’s so delicate, the dark blood vessels underneath show through much more easily, creating that shadowy, purple "dark circle" effect. There are fewer oil glands This area has almost no sebaceous (oil) glands, meaning it struggles to keep itself hydrated. The winter dehydration trap When harsh winter air saps moisture from your skin, the under-eye area flattens out. This sudden dehydration makes fine lines look deeper and dark circles appear way more prominent.   The ingredients that actually make a difference (no needles needed!) With so many eye creams and gels on the market, it's easy to feel overwhelmed. Here's what to actually look for in your eye care products and why. Marine Collagen Marine collagen works to rebuild what time and lifestyle are breaking down. It supports the skin's structural integrity, improves elasticity, strengthens thin under-eye skin and helps the under-eye area retain moisture, all of which make dark circles and fine lines less visible over time. Perfect for crepiness, fine lines and that “tired texture.” Vitamin C This is your brightening powerhouse. It inhibits melanin production, which helps fade pigmentation-related dark circles over time, while also stimulating collagen synthesis to thicken and strengthen the delicate under-eye skin. Look for stabilised forms of vitamin C in eye-specific formulations, as the skin here is too sensitive for the concentrations used in facial serums. Caffeine Caffeine is one of the hardest-working ingredients in any eye formula. It constricts blood vessels, which visibly reduces the appearance of dark circles, and it has a mild de-puffing effect by encouraging lymphatic drainage. It works quickly, which is why it's often described as an instant fix — but used consistently, it also delivers longer-term results. Ideal for morning puffiness and “I didn’t sleep” eyes! Retinol Alternatives (gentle but effective) Ingredients like bakuchiol or encapsulated retinol — offer the cell-turnover and collagen-stimulating benefits of traditional retinol without the irritation that the eye area is particularly vulnerable to. If you want the anti-ageing benefits of retinol around your eyes, look for a formula specifically designed for the orbital zone. Hyaluronic Acid Hyaluronic acid draws moisture into the skin and plumps the under-eye area, which immediately reduces the appearance of fine lines and makes the skin less translucent, meaning those blood vessels become less visible. A must for winter dryness.   The products we recommend If you're ready to take your eye care seriously, these are the formulations worth knowing about. Pevonia “C” Evolutive Eye Gel If your main struggle is morning puffiness and dark shadows, you are going to love this gem of an eye gel! It’s a lightweight, high-performance gel infused with a timed-release Vitamin C complex, hyaluronic acid, marine collagen and ginkgo biloba leave extract. It cools, deeply hydrates and plumps the eye area while neutralizing environmental stressors! It really does leave your eye contour looking instantly more awake, crisp, and luminous! It’s a best seller for every good reason! Vie Collection Eye Serum Caffeine and Vitamins Think of this as an espresso shot for your eyes (literally!) Formulated by clinical experts, this advanced serum combines the de-puffing power of caffeine with a cocktail of essential vitamins. It works beautifully to stimulate microcirculation, visibly reducing dark circles and flattening stubborn under-eye bags. Vie Collection Chrono Eyes Puffiness – Dark Circles Wrinkle Cream If you are looking for a true topical alternative to injectables, this luxurious cream is a game-changer! It’s our go-to for anyone dealing with multiple eye concerns at once.  It is specifically designed to target the signs of chronological ageing, smoothing out crow’s feet, plumping up hollow under-eyes, and restoring that youthful, bouncy volume while you sleep! This advanced formula of hyaluronic acid, peptides, vitamin c and niacinamide targets dark circles, puffiness, fine lines and the signs of fatigue with a sophisticated blend of actives that work around the clock, true to its name!   Instant eye‑brightening tips (that actually work) Even the best eye product will only take you so far if the application and supporting habits aren't there. These are the things we always recommend alongside your topical routine. Apply eye cream with your ring finger It exerts the least pressure of any finger, which matters enormously around the eye area where aggressive rubbing can break down collagen and worsen puffiness over time. Tap gently along the orbital bone rather than dragging across the skin. Try a simple lymphatic massage Using light pressure, work from the inner corner of the eye outward along the lower lid, then sweep gently up toward the temple. This encourages fluid drainage and can visibly reduce puffiness in just a few minutes. Do this while applying your eye product each morning for best results. Cold spoons or a chilled jade roller reduce puffiness fast. Keep your eye products in the fridge The cool temperature has an immediate vasoconstricting effect that reduces puffiness and dark circles, it's a simple trick that genuinely works. Don't forget your waterline A nude or white eyeliner on the waterline is one of the most underrated eye-brightening tricks there is. It makes the whites of your eyes appear larger and more awake instantly! Choose your concealer wisely A peachy toned concealer neutralises blue and purple tones before you even apply coverage, giving you a brighter result with less product. And make sure it’s a hydrating concealer! Matte formulas can age the eye area! Apply in a V-shape from the inner corner rather than only directly under the eye for the most natural finish. Oh and a tiny dab of highlighter on the inner corner brightens the eyes instantly! Stay hydrated (seriously) It sounds obvious, but winter is when most people are chronically under-hydrated because the cold suppresses the sensation of thirst. Even mild dehydration shows up immediately in the eye area. Eight glasses a day remains the most effective and underutilised eye treatment available. Sleep slightly elevated Yes, I know we all have our sleep habits and that doesn’t usually include sleeping propped up (unless I have a hideous cough that is!) but sleeping slightly elevated really can reduce morning swelling around the eyes!   Tired eyes are one of the most common concerns we hear about at this time of year and one of the most treatable. The right combination of targeted ingredients, consistent application and a few smart habits can make a genuinely visible difference, without a needle in sight!

How to firm your skin: Expert tips and products

by Jo Boyden on Jun 03 2026
I’m sure we’ve all had that moment (if you’re in your 40’s like me that is) when you catch your reflection and think, “Hang on… when did my skin start to sag?!” Well loss of firmness is one of the most common skin concerns we hear about at Beauty Collective, and it’s one that tends to creep up gradually, which makes it feel all the more alarming when you suddenly notice it! The good news is that skin firmness is something you can support, improve and maintain with the right approach (and we’re not talking about extreme measures!) A few targeted products, a handful of consistent habits and the right knowledge goes a very long way. Here’s everything we’d recommend, from the best tips for firming and lifting skin to the products that actually deliver!   Why is your skin suddenly sagging? Here’s the honest truth about skin firmness, it doesn’t disappear overnight even though it might be all of a sudden that you are noticing your face looking less ‘lifted’ so to speak! Our skin’s firmness relies on three structural elements. Collagen (the protein that gives skin its structure and strength), Elastin (the protein that allows skin to snap back into place after movement) and Hyaluronic Acid (the molecule that keeps skin plump, cushioned and hydrated). All three unfortunately decline with age. In fact collagen production drops by approximately 1% per year from our mid-20s, and the rate accelerates significantly around menopause when oestrogen levels fall! But ageing is not the only driver. Here are the other factors that contribute to loss of firmness, some of which are entirely within your control! UV exposure. Sun damage is the single biggest accelerator of collagen degradation. UV rays generate free radicals that break down collagen fibres and prevent new ones from forming. This is why daily SPF is the most impactful anti-ageing product you can use — every day, without exception. Dehydration. Skin that lacks moisture loses plumpness and appears to sag more visibly. Well-hydrated skin looks firmer, fuller and more youthful. Hydration is not a luxury in a firming routine — it’s a foundation. Repetitive facial expressions and sleep position. Years of the same expressions create permanent lines in the skin. Sleeping face-down or on one side compresses the same areas of skin night after night, contributing to loss of structure over time. Weight fluctuation. Significant or repeated weight changes stretch and contract the skin, gradually reducing its elasticity and ability to spring back. Lifestyle factors. Smoking, alcohol, a high-sugar diet and chronic stress all accelerate the breakdown of collagen and elastin. Conversely, good nutrition, adequate sleep and stress management actively support skin structure from the inside.   The two products we always recommend for firming Phytomer Structurise Firming Contour Serum This silky, milky serum with a beautifully subtle floral sent melts effortlessly into the skin, delivering an immediately comfortable, luminous result while working at a deeper level to visibly improve firmness, density and facial contour definition over time. The hero active is a dual marine algae complex - Laminaria Digitata and Chlorella Vulgaris (which improves skin tissue density and elasticity with consistent use), Spilanthes Acmella Flower Extract (which provides a tightening and lifting effect), Adenosine (which smooths fine lines) and Saccharide Isomerate that delivers long-lasting hydration that binds moisture directly to the skin. Finally Squalane and Squalene restore the skin’s lipid balance, support the barrier and keep the complexion supple and smooth. Why BC customers love it as much as we do; “I was recommended this serum by a friend and am so glad I was! I’m in my 60’s and have been concerned about my skin getting looser as I age. This serum smells divine and feels light and silky on application and in the month I’ve been using it, it has definitely made a difference to my skin. It is now more supple and visibly firmer too! – Kylie D “I had my doubts about it being firming, but I actually feel like it's toning my skin--and gives a beautiful radiance too.” – Suzy “I was starting to worry about my face dropping and so decided to invest in this serum and the Pevonia Lumafirm Cream from Beauty Collective. I use both together morning and night and have noticed results after only 3 weeks. My skin does feel firmer but it also looks more radiant too. Very happy with the results.” – Simone K “Lovely lightweight textured serum that sinks into my skin. I use it every morning and night and have noticed a difference to my skin texture. It feels and I think looks more toned and is visibly brighter. I love this serums scent too!” – Kayla B   Pevonia Lumafirm Repair Cream Lift & Glow If the Structurise Serum is your morning firmness treatment, the Pevonia Lumafirm Repair Cream Lift & Glow is your overnight transformation! While we sleep (when our skin is in its most active regenerative state) this luxurious cream works deeply to lift, repair, brighten and nourish, using some of the most sophisticated actives in the Pevonia range. The standout ingredient is Kombucha (Saccharomyces/Xylinum/Black Tea Ferment). It’s rich in organic acids and vitamins and stimulates cell renewal while detoxifing and brightening skin. Oligopeptide-68 supports skin repair and has documented skin-brightening and anti-pigmentation effects. Palmitoyl Tetrapeptide-3 is a signal peptide that reduces inflammation and directly improves firmness and elasticity. Resveratrol provides powerful antioxidant protection. And Diacetyl Boldine evens skin tone for a more radiant, uniform complexion by morning. The cream’s texture is beautifully silky but rich enough to feel genuinely nourishing without any heaviness or residue. And the results, as our customers consistently report, speak for themselves; “This is truly a gem of a product! It delivers that youthful, lifting effect you're looking for.  Even though it's positioned as a lifting cream, what I loved most was how it made my skin look incredibly smooth and refined.” – Bianca “"I started to notice several changes within weeks of using 2 times a day of the Lumafirm cream. My face looked healthy, even toned, my wrinkles are smoothened out. And my skin continues to get firmer and firmer.” – Fiona F “My facialist recommended this cream to use at night. I noticed an immediate difference. My skin was more luminous, alive and younger looking. Previously I experimented with other night creams but had never experienced the positive change that Lumafirm Lift & Glow provided. Im sticking with this one!” - Sarah M “I love this product, I’ve been using this product for about three weeks, and I've already started to see great results. It really firms up my face especially the jaw line area and it smells very good too.” – Debra R   For even better results incorporate these steps into your daily routine Facial massage This is genuinely one of the most underrated firming habits there is. Daily facial massage (even just two to three minutes when applying your serum or cream) improves circulation, stimulates lymphatic drainage, encourages the skin to produce more collagen and helps sculpt and lift the facial contours over time. Use upward, outward motions and moderate pressure. If you have a gemstone roller, use it with your serum for an enhanced lifting effect. Stay well hydrated Skin that is adequately hydrated from within genuinely looks firmer, fuller and more youthful. Dehydrated skin exaggerates every sign of ageing, including loss of firmness. Aim for at least 2 litres of water daily, and more if you exercise or live in a dry or air-conditioned environment. Wear SPF every single day We will never stop saying this! UV exposure is the single greatest accelerator of collagen breakdown. Every day you skip SPF, you undo some of the work your firming products are doing. Apply SPF 30 minimum as the last step of your morning routine, every day, regardless of season or cloud cover. Eat for your skin! A diet rich in antioxidants (colourful vegetables, berries, green tea), essential fatty acids (oily fish, avocado, olive oil, flaxseed) and protein supports collagen synthesis and protects existing collagen from oxidative damage. Conversely, a high-sugar diet accelerates a process called glycation (where sugar molecules attach to and degrade collagen fibres, causing them to become brittle and less elastic.) Reducing refined sugar is one of the most impactful dietary changes you can make for skin firmness. Manage stress actively Chronic stress is consistently underestimated as a contributor to skin ageing. Cortisol (the stress hormone) directly degrades collagen. Stress management isn’t just good for your wellbeing, it’s genuinely good for your skin! Regular exercise, time outdoors, adequate rest and whatever brings you genuine calm (I love music and meditation) all make a significant difference to your complexion over time. Prioritise sleep The hours between roughly 11pm and 4am are when cell turnover and collagen production peak. Consistent, quality sleep (we are talking 7–9 hours a night) is one of the most powerful anti-ageing tools available! Poor or insufficient sleep elevates cortisol, increases inflammation, impairs the skin’s repair processes and accelerates the very collagen breakdown you’re trying to prevent. A very good night cream sadly cannot compensate for poor sleep!   If you stick to good quality professional and follow these daily tips, firmer, more lifted skin is absolutely achievable

The best anti-ageing skincare products for women over 40

by Jo Boyden on May 29 2026
Let’s be completely honest, by the time we hit our 40s and beyond, we do not have the time or the patience for a complicated 10-step skincare routine that delivers mediocre results. We want quality, we want advanced ingredients, and we want to see visible changes when we look in the mirror! Treating mature skin effectively isn't about throwing the strongest acid at our face or overloading our skin with trendy products filled with shallow promises! It’s about investing in formulas that firm, plump, and protect your skin barrier while supporting collagen production and long-term skin health. Keep reading for the youth boosting skincare we always recommend for women over 40.   The skincare ingredients women over 40 should actually be using Before we get into the products themselves, it’s important to understand the ingredients that genuinely make a visible difference to ageing skin. As we age, our skin naturally produces less collagen, loses elasticity and becomes drier, thinner and more reactive. The right active ingredients can dramatically improve hydration, firmness, brightness and overall skin health while helping skin look smoother, plumper and more radiant. These are the ingredients we believe are truly worth investing in when it comes to age-defying skincare: Exosomes – Help support skin renewal, repair and collagen production. Peptides – Support firmer, stronger-looking skin by encouraging collagen production. Retinol – The gold-standard anti-ageing ingredient for smoothing wrinkles and improving skin texture. Vitamin C – Brightens skin, boosts radiance and helps defend against free radical damage. Collagen – Helps improve skin firmness, hydration and elasticity. Hyaluronic Acid – Intensely hydrates and plumps the skin for a smoother, fresher appearance.   The anti-ageing products we always recommend\ The serums The investment: Hubislab MineExo Peptide Ampoule Why it’s worth it: This high-performance serum is a standout for anyone looking to restore, firm, and deeply hydrate their skin. Powered by Exosome Technology (one of the most talked-about innovations in advanced skincare right now!) It helps support skin renewal by improving the delivery of powerful actives where they are needed most. It delivers peptides, growth factors, and antioxidants deep into the skin to stimulate collagen, improve elasticity, soften the look of wrinkles and protect the skin barrier! Hyaluronic acid and hydrolyzed collagen deeply hydrate skin, while a powerhouse vitamin complex including retinol, vitamin C and vitamin E brightens and helps defend against free radical damage. “This serum gives the skin the most amount of plumping you can see the transformation before your very eyes. Skin feels hydrated and fine line disappear within days of using it.” – Shelley Veitch   The investment: Vie Collection Serum De Vie – High Performance Youth Concentrate Why it’s worth it: For those serious about combating the signs of ageing, this powerful, beautifully nourishing serum is a game-changer. Its advanced formula works at a cellular level to protect skin cells while targeting fine lines, wrinkles, loss of elasticity and hyperpigmentation, helping to restore a youthful, firm and smooth complexion. With its powerful blend of antioxidants, vitamin B3 and EGF-like peptides, it helps to stimulate collagen production and improve skin elasticity while niacinamide slows the transfer of melanin to key parts of the skin to fade the look of dark spots and age spots. It’s the ultimate weapon in your anti-ageing arsenal, believe me! “This is the best serum! I’m on my second bottle, I can see that my face improves a lot, more bright, healthy and firmer!” – Sarah M.    The moisturisers The investment: Vie Collection Time Control Deep Wrinkles Firming Rich Cream Why it’s worth it: This advanced corrective cream was created in conjunction with a respected Cosmetic Surgeon to help enhance the appearance of ageing skin and support the visible results of cosmetic procedures such as BotoxTM and fillers, while also offering a powerful non-invasive alternative for those wanting impressive anti-ageing results without interventions. Highly concentrated with advanced anti-ageing and nourishing ingredients including pro-collagen peptides, hyaluronic acid, EGF-like peptides, trace elements and minerals. It effectively helps to enhance skin elasticity, reduce the appearance of deep wrinkles and soothe the discomfort that thin and mature skin types can experience. You’ll notice immediate results as skin feels and appears smoother, softer and more supple and after continued use wrinkles are visibly filled and skin is noticeably firmer. Outstanding stuff! “I have been using this firming cream for a month now and I can honestly say it has reduced the appearance of even my deepest wrinkles! I was even asked if I’d had botox the other day! Winning!” – Anne K The investment: Pevonia’s Micro-Retinol Essential Moisturiser Why it’s worth it: If you invest in only one treatment for ageing skin, make it a high-quality retinol cream! When it comes to anti-ageing, retinol (vitamin A) remains the holy grail of skincare and one of the most important ingredients to incorporate into your routine, even if you have sensitive skin! Why? Because it tells sluggish skin cells to speed up their turnover, effectively smoothing out texture and fine lines from the inside out! The problem? Many people are afraid to use retinol because so many retinol products on the market are overly harsh leaving skin red, flaky, irritated and dehydrated which can actually make skin appear more aged and compromised! That’s exactly why Pevonia’s Micro-Retinol range stands out. Using an advanced stabilised delivery system, this next-generation formula delivers all the incredible benefits of Retinol while remaining beautifully hydrating, soothing and far gentler on the skin than traditional Retinol products! Formulated with Retinol, Vitamin C, Marine Collagen, Hyaluronic Acid and nourishing Squalane, this powerhouse moisturiser works to smooth fine lines, brighten uneven skin tone, deeply hydrate and restore firmness without the irritation commonly associated with Vitamin A products. It truly is the ultimate all-rounder for mature skin! “This is the most beautiful cream I have ever used; light texture, non greasy, non shiny. Changes in my skin are an increased smoothing of lines and crepe-skin areas, softening, hydrating and contouring, and reduced pigmentation. Some results were instantly visible and now after three weeks my skin just keeps improving. I am 60 and tried this after other brands became ineffective. Now my skin appears luminous and more refined. So, I am going to purchase the whole range. Its a surprise to see a brighter smoother complexion at my age.” – Annie The Investment: Pevonia Age Correction Marine Collagen Cream Why it’s worth it: To fight the structural slackness that happens as collagen levels naturally decline, your daily moisturiser needs to do heavy lifting! You need a lipid-rich formula that mimics the skin's natural proteins to bring back that signature "bounce” and boy does this cream deliver! As Pevonia’s global number-one best-seller, it’s a cult favourite for a reason. Infused with pure Marine Collagen, hyaluronic acid and deeply nourishing Squalane, it wraps dry, depleted skin in a velvety layer of hydration. It immediately plumps the appearance of fine lines, firms the skin structure, and protects against the free radicals that accelerate ageing. “I love this daily face cream....I use it morning and night! My skin looks and feels amazing. I'm 52 and am told constantly that I look so young...” – Linda And if your skin is on the more sensitive side… The investment: Phytomer Expert Youth Wrinkle Plumping Cream Why it’s worth it: If your skin has become increasingly reactive, dry or sensitised with age, this luxurious cream is an absolute standout. It delivers powerful anti-ageing benefits while remaining incredibly comforting and gentle on fragile skin. Formulated with marine biotechnology ingredients and advanced wrinkle-plumping actives, it deeply nourishes, smooths fine lines, restores softness and helps strengthen the skin barrier without irritation. “If you are looking for a beautiful nourishing moisturiser to help with fine lines and wrinkles while being soothing and nourishing for ageing, dry and sensitive skin, then give this a try! I highly recommend!” –  Sally W. The Masks The Investment: Vie Collection Mesoforce Hyaluronic Acid Vitamin Mask Why it’s worth it: For those days when your skin looks genuinely tired, dull, or lacking volume, a standard hydrating mask won't cut it. You need a targeted, clinical-grade treatment that mimics the effects of an in-clinic vitamin injection. This high-performance mask is a total luxury powerhouse. It drenches the skin in a concentrated cocktail of Hyaluronic Acid and potent vitamins to instantly restore volume, deeply hydrate, and deliver a spectacular, lit-from-within glow that makes it look like you’ve just stepped out of a high-end skin clinic. “This product is amazing. My skin feels hydrated, smooth and plump. A little goes a long way, and one tube lasts me almost 6 months with regular use. Can’t be without it!” – Erin Crawford The investment: Pevonia Ageless Skin Collagen Mask Why it’s worth it: This beautiful collagen-rich treatment mask is like an instant pick-me-up for tired, depleted skin. Infused with Marine Collagen, Hyaluronic Acid and deeply hydrating actives, it visibly plumps fine lines, restores softness and leaves skin looking smoother, firmer and more radiant after just one use. The most beautiful mask that leaves my skin feeling so soft and smooth! It smells divine and is gentle enough on my delicate skin. Love the plump effect it leaves my skin looking too!” – Stacey Harrison The Eye Creams  The investment: Vie Collection Chrono Eyes Puffiness Dark Circles Wrinkle Cream Why it’s worth it: The eye area is often the first place ageing starts to show, and this powerhouse eye cream targets every concern at once, we are talking puffiness, dark circles, fine lines and loss of firmness! Using advanced peptides, brightening ingredients and smoothing actives, it instantly refreshes tired eyes while helping to visibly firm and strengthen the delicate eye area over time. “This is a wonderful eye cream, it gives immediate gratification thanks to a pearlescent finish that instantly brightens the eye area and it has definitely calmed my puffiness, lightened by dark circles and even smoothed my wrinkles! It’s truly a fabulous eye cream that is well worth the price tag.” – Lisa M  The investment: Pevonia Age Correction Eye Contour Why it’s worth it: This deeply nourishing eye cream is ideal for mature eyes showing signs of dryness, crepiness and loss of elasticity. Formulated with Collagen, Hyaluronic Acid and smoothing anti-ageing ingredients, it helps soften fine lines, improve hydration and restore a firmer, more youthful-looking eye contour. “This eye cream has never failed me. I was introduced to it from my esthetian and through the years I noticed the difference if I tried other eye creams. So I wouldn't stray to far from this and always ended up purchasing again and again. I barely have signs of aging compared to other women my age. Love this!” – Cassandra O   Remember great skincare over 40 isn’t about chasing every trend or using the harshest products on the market. It’s about investing in high-quality formulas packed with proven ingredients that support your skin as it changes with age. Whether your focus is hydration, firmness, wrinkles, pigmentation or restoring that healthy glow, the right skincare can make a visible difference!
Woman with visible acne on her face, showing inflamed blemishes and acne prone skin

Hormonal acne explained: Causes, tips and the best skincare

by Jo Boyden on May 22 2026
There’s nothing quite as frustrating as waking up, looking in the mirror, and seeing a blemish that has literally appeared out of nowhere overnight! Especially when you thought your breakout days were left behind in your teenage years! The thing is hormonal acne doesn’t just affect teenagers, it’s incredibly common in adulthood too, particularly in our late 30s, 40s and beyond. The tricky part is that hormonal acne is very different from a standard breakout, and because it can be so stubborn, it needs a more thoughtful approach than simply trying to “dry it out”. Instead, the key is to support the skin with gentle, targeted care that helps calm inflammation, protect the skin barrier and keep breakouts under control. Keep reading as we share the best professional skincare tips, ingredients, and expert-approved products to help keep stubborn hormonal breakouts at bay and your skin looking healthier, calmer, and more balanced!   How do you know it’s hormonal acne? Hormonal breakouts are often linked to changes in hormones that can affect oil production and inflammation in the skin. It commonly shows up as deep, tender spots, recurring breakouts or congestion that tends to cluster along the chin, jawline and lower cheeks, and occasionally the neck. This is distinctly different from congestion related acne which tends to appear across the T-zone (forehead, nose and chin.)  For many people, hormonal acne flares a week or so before a period, due to hormonal shifts. As oestrogen (the “female” hormone) levels drop, androgens (“male” hormones) have a relatively stronger effect on the skin often increasing oil production and congestion, which can lead to your skin breaking out. Hormonal acne also flares during other hormonal shifts such as stress, pregnancy, perimenopause and menopause!   The best skincare ingredients for hormonal acne The goal with hormonal acne is to keep the skin barrier strong and supported, target active breakouts and calm the inflammation that drives the redness and pain. Some of the most effective ingredients include: Salicylic & lactic acids to help clear pores and reduce congestion. Niacinamide to calm redness and balance oil Clay & charcoal to detoxify pores and absorb excess oil Hyaluronic acid for lightweight hydration Vitamin A and retinol alternatives to support skin renewal Soothing botanicals to reduce irritation   The best routine for hormonal acne Because hormonal acne tends to be deeper and more persistent than the occasional blemish, it often responds best to a routine that is both targeted and gentle. A simple routine is often the best place to start when treating hormonal acne. One of the biggest mistakes people make is over-cleansing or using harsh products that leave the skin feeling tight and dry. When the skin barrier becomes compromised, it can trigger even more oil production and irritation! Instead, it’s best to choose professional skincare that deeply cleanses without stripping the skin and focus on maintaining hydration and balance. Remember also that consistency is key, hormonal acne rarely improves overnight, but gentle, targeted skincare can help visibly improve the skin over time.   1. Choose a gentle, purifying cleanser You want to opt for a cleanser that removes excess oil, sunscreen and impurities while clearing out dead skin cells without stripping your skin and leaving your face feeling tight or dry. Remember over-cleansing can irritate the barrier and make breakouts feel worse. Our recommendation: Medicalia Clarifying Cleanser Specifically created for those with breakout prone and sensitive/oily skin, it’s formulated with both Salicylic and Lactic acids to gently but effectively unclog pores and soften skin while improving clarity! Its potent foaming suds work very quickly to eliminate surface bacteria, toxins, impurities and makeup while combatting inflammation too! “I’ve been using this cleanser for a year now. Keeps my sebaceous filaments in check and has helped control my hormonal acne better than any other cleanser I’ve used.” – Sophie H 2. Use targeted treatments that balance oil production This is where actives can be helpful. Specific ingredients can support clearer-looking skin while helping to calm inflammation. To tackle the stubborn hormonal acne you’re experiencing, look for a targeted serum that helps balance excess oil production, calm redness and irritation, and support the skin’s natural healing process without over-drying the skin. Our recommendation: Pevonia Soothing Propolis Concentrate This is one of BC’s best-selling serums and it’s a particular favourite for hormonal breakouts because of its extraordinary natural antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. Propolis is a resinous compound produced by bees that has been used medicinally for thousands of years and in skincare, it’s one of the most effective naturally derived antibacterial actives available. Applied to the skin, Propolis helps reduce the bacteria that colonise clogged pores and contribute to inflammatory breakouts. It calms redness and swelling around active spots, speeds up the skin’s healing process and helps prevent new breakouts from forming! Amazing right? And unlike harsh antiseptic actives, it does all of this without disrupting the skin barrier or causing dryness! Now you can see why it’s a Pevonia favourite. What makes it particularly useful for hormonal acne though is that it can be used as a preventative applied consistently during the week or two before your period when you know breakouts are likely, it helps minimise the severity of what appears and speeds up recovery when blemishes do develop. “I love this product, i bought it while i was pregnant and had severe hormonal acne and it seemed to calm and soothe my skin and reduced the "angriness" of my skin!” – Melinda I 4. Support skin healing & hydration It’s a myth that oily and acne prone skin doesn’t need nourishment! A common mistake people with acne make is skipping moisturiser because your skin feels oily. By doing so your skin will become dehydrated, go into panic mode and actually product more oil to compensate! You just need an oil-free, healing moisturiser. Our Recommendation: Medicalia Clarifying Cream This lightweight, fast absorbing clarifying moisturiser is ideal for hormonal acne-prone skin because it delivers hydration without feeling heavy, greasy, or pore-clogging. Formulated with salicylic and glycolic acids it helps calm congestion, rebalance excess oil, and support the skin barrier. It also works to keep skin feeling hydrated, soothed, and healthier-looking while helping reduce the appearance of redness and breakouts. What makes it especially great for hormonal acne is that it helps nourish and comfort stressed, inflamed skin without overloading it (something many richer creams can do!) The result? Skin feels more balanced, less irritated, and better supported overall, with a clearer, calmer-looking complexion over time. “it's expensive but it's been a lifesaver for my acne prone skin! I've noticed it helps keep my sebaceous filaments in check also.” – Sophie H 5. At night, use a “cell turnover” treatment Because hormonal acne is often linked to congestion, excess oil, and trapped dead skin cells, encouraging your skin to renew itself more effectively is essential. Overnight treatments that support healthy cell turnover can help keep pores clearer, improve skin texture, and reduce the appearance of persistent breakouts over time. Our recommendation: Medicalia Retinol & 'C' Care Retinol is considered the gold standard for acne-prone skin because it helps speed up cell turnover, keeping pores clearer and reducing congestion. Combined with Hyaluronic Acid, Ceramides and Vitamin C, it also helps to brighten the skin and fade the lingering red or brown post-breakout marks that blemishes often leave behind. 6. Don’t forget SPF Daily sun protection is essential, especially if you are using active ingredients that may make your skin more sensitive. A good SPF helps protect your skin while you work on improving its overall condition. Our recommendation: Hubislab Herb 8 Soothing Blemish Balm SPF30 PA++ - 50g Formulated with Zinc Oxide, SPF30 broad-spectrum filters, and Hubislab’s signature Anti Toxin Herb 8 complex, this soothing sunscreen designed for sensitive skin works to alleviate irritation, calm redness, support skin recovery, and strengthen the skin barrier! It’s your SPF and skin treatment in one! 7. Once a week apply a mask Adding a weekly mask into your skincare routine can make a huge difference when it comes to managing hormonal breakouts. Masks help give the skin a deeper clean while targeting excess oil, congestion, and inflammation, all without needing to overload your skin with harsh daily treatments! Use a detoxifying or clarifying mask to help absorb excess oil, decongest pores, and calm inflammation, especially in the lead-up to your period when hormonal breakouts often flare. Our recommendation: Pevonia Pure Skin Charcoal Mask This purifying charcoal and clay mask is ideal for oily, congested, and breakout-prone skin. It helps draw out impurities, absorb excess oil, and leave the skin feeling clearer, smoother, and more balanced without stripping away essential moisture. It’s the perfect weekly reset for skin that feels congested, inflamed, or prone to stubborn hormonal breakouts. “Being in my 50's I wasn't sure if this would dry my skin out, but I bought it coz I had a few breakouts - hormonal I guess. I've used it daily for about 3 days and it's totally cleared my skin up - it feels de-congested, clear and smooth. I love this mask.” – Melinda Hopkins The lifestyle habits that can actually make a difference too Skincare can manage the symptoms of hormonal acne beautifully but if you want to address the root cause as well, these lifestyle factors are worth taking seriously: Avoid picking or squeezing breakouts Because hormonal blemishes are deep, picking or squeezing them (even though tempting) won't bring them to a head. Picking often leads to more inflammation and can increase the risk of marks or scarring. Track your cycle If you notice your skin flares up a week before your period, you can adjust your skincare a few days early to include more purifying, anti-inflammatory ingredients as a preventative step. Reduce your dairy and sugar intake While diet doesn't cause acne, high-sugar foods and dairy can cause spikes in insulin and inflammation, which can worsen hormonal flares. Reducing high-glycaemic foods is actually one of the most evidence-backed dietary changes for hormonal acne. Swapping refined carbohydrates and sugars for whole grains, vegetables and protein helps stabilise blood sugar and reduce androgen activity. Focus on stress management Stress is actually one of the biggest contributors to hormonal breakouts! This is because stress releases a hormone called cortisol, which directly tells your skin to produce more oil leading to inflammation and flare ups! Believe me we know saying manage your stress is easier said than done! But something as simple as medication, listening to music, breathing mindfully and exercising (even if it’s a walk) can help regulate cortisol levels. Also never underestimate the power of a calming self-care ritual! And a good night's sleep (7 to 9 hours nine hours is not a luxury for acne-prone skin, it’s part of the treatment!) Consider spearmint tea There is actually meaningful clinical evidence that spearmint tea has mild anti-androgenic properties. Two cups a day has been shown in small studies to reduce hormonal acne. It’s not a miracle cure but it’s a pleasant, zero-risk addition to a management approach. Talk to your GP or dermatologist If your hormonal acne is severe, cystic or significantly affecting your quality of life, please seek professional medical advice. There are effective medical interventions available, from oral contraceptives to spironolactone, that work alongside good skincare.   Hormonal acne can take time to improve, so consistency is essential. Rather than attacking the skin with aggressive products, focus on supporting and strengthening the skin barrier while using targeted ingredients that help reduce congestion and inflammation over time. With the right skincare routine, professional advice, and healthy lifestyle habits, hormonal acne can absolutely become more manageable.

Skincare in Your 50s: What Your Skin Really Needs

by Jo Boyden on May 15 2026
Our 40’s and 50’s is a time when our skin starts to change in ways I’m sure you’ve definitely noticed! Between hormonal shifts and a natural slowdown in collagen production, our skin is going through some major transitions right now! You’ve likely noticed your skin is all of a sudden a lot drier than ever before. Loss of firmness and fine lines are a given (why do our faces suddenly appear to droop?!) skin can definitely appear more dull and lacklustre and then there is the lack of “plumpness” (synonymous with younger skin of course). At BC we are often asked what skin really needs at this stage and the truth is simpler than you might think! While we can’t defy ageing, we can absolutely support our skin to help it look and feel healthier, smoother and more radiant too, you just need the right ingredients, consistency and a more targeted routine for mature skin. Keep reading to find out what your skin really needs, as recommended by the BC Pros.   Firstly, why does skin change so much in your 50s? One of the biggest reasons skin changes in your 50s is hormonal fluctuation, particularly during and after menopause. Oestrogen levels decline significantly, and because oestrogen plays such an important role in keeping skin firm, hydrated and resilient, the changes can become quite noticeable. Skin naturally produces less collagen and elastin, meaning it may start to feel thinner, drier and less bouncy than before. Cell turnover slows so radiance declines and the skin barrier becomes more fragile, often leading to increased sensitivity and dehydration too! Great! This is why skincare in our 50s is less about aggressive treatments and more about supporting the skin properly with hydration, nourishment, barrier repair and ingredients that help restore comfort, firmness and glow.   So what does skin in your 50s actually need? 1. Intense moisture (not just hydration) One of the most common complaints during this decade is dryness. Even people who previously had oily or combination skin often notice their complexion suddenly feeling tight, dehydrated or uncomfortable. This is because a drop in estrogen often leads to a decrease in natural oil production and mature skin retains moisture less efficiently than it once did. It’s essential to look for skincare rich in Hyaluronic Acid, Ceramides, Squalane and nourishing oils and butters as these ingredients help replenish moisture, support the skin barrier and restore softness and comfort.   2. Support for collagen and firmness We lose about 1% of our collagen every single year starting in our 20s! Eek. But that process accelerates significantly during menopause. This leads to a loss of elasticity and sagging and skin that begins looking thinner seemingly overnight! This is where ingredients like Marine Collagen, Peptides, Retinol and Vitamin C are paramount! They can make a real difference by helping support firmness, elasticity and smoother-looking skin over time.   3. Barrier repair and skin comfort Many women notice their skin becomes far more reactive in their 50s. Products that once worked beautifully may suddenly feel irritating or sensitising. This is usually a sign the skin barrier needs support. Rather than over-exfoliating or using harsh actives, focus on products that calm, replenish and strengthen the skin. Again products rich in ceramides should be your go-to.   4. Gentle exfoliation for radiance Cell turnover slows down as we age, which can leave a layer of dead skin cells on the surface. This is why skin can start to look "grey" or dull. Exfoliation is therefore essential, however, mature skin is also thinner, so harsh scrubs are a no-go! Look for gentle exfoliators that smooth and brighten skin without stripping the skin barrier. Enzyme exfoliators are the best!   5. Brightening agents If you’re seeing "age spots" or uneven pigmentation (very common as we start to reach our 50’s), it’s likely the result of sun exposure from years ago finally coming to the surface. This is when Vitamin C will become your best friend! Other natural ingredients like Vitamin B3 (Niacinamide), MADEWHITE™ (Madecassoside), Tranexamic Acid and Arbutin can make a significant difference in fading dark spots too.   6. Targeted Eye Care You’ve hopefully been slapping on the good stuff around your delicate eye area for a few decades now as our eyes are the first place to start really showing signs of ageing so preventative skincare is imperative from as young as our 20’s, but the skin around our eyes often shows the most significant change in our 50s, from hooded lids to deeper "crow’s feet". This is why come your 50’s you need so much more than just a basic eye cream. you’ll want to look for a treatment that offers a "lifting" effect.    7. SPF No matter your age, daily sun protection is essential! In your 50s, it becomes even more important to help protect your skin from further visible signs of ageing, so don’t be complacent, apply that SPF daily (and yes even in winter). The best skincare ingredients for women in their 50’s I’ve already mentioned the ingredients we know are essential for mature skin but here’s a little breakdown of the top 7 so you can see their immediate benefits; Marine Collagen Helps support firmness, softness and elasticity while improving skin comfort and hydration. Retinol (Vitamin A) Boosts collagen, smooths wrinkles, clears pores, and improves skin texture. Hyaluronic Acid One of the best ingredients for mature skin because it helps attract and retain moisture, leaving skin looking plumper and smoother. Vitamin C Brightens dullness, supports collagen production and helps restore radiance to tired-looking skin. Ceramides Essential for strengthening the skin barrier and preventing moisture loss. Peptides Help support firmer, smoother-looking skin by encouraging collagen production.   The skincare routine and products we recommend in your 50s Step 1: Gentle cleansing Avoid harsh cleansers that leave skin feeling tight after washing. Creamy, nourishing cleansers are ideal because they cleanse without disrupting the skin barrier. We highly recommend: Pevonia Power Repair Hydrating Cleanser It’s a global-best seller for Pevonia and for good reason! It’s perfect for all ages, especially older women worried about dryness, dehydration, ageing and sensitivity! It’s gentle, creamy and effectively removes impurities while keeping your skin hydrated, soft and refreshed all at the same time! What’s more its formulated with marine collagen and marine elastin to support skin’s elasticity, suppleness and resilience. Step 2: Vitamin C serum - day A nourishing and brightening serum becomes incredibly important during our 40’s and 50’s! Look for formulas with Vitamin C, Hyaluronic Acid and antioxidants to help replenish moisture and support skin vitality. We highly recommend: Pevonia ‘C’ Complexe with Oxyzomes Just two pumps of this beautiful creamy serum (with the most divine citrus scent) equals radiant looking skin instantly! Oh, and it feels a-mazing too thanks to its combination of vitamin c and hydrating dynamo hyaluronic which quite literally drenches skin with repairing antioxidants. Step 3: Hydrating moisturiser This is where richer creams really shine. Mature skin often needs creams that provide hydration, lipid and anti-ageing support to help strengthen, smooth and comfort the skin. We highly recommend: Phytomer Expert Youth Wrinkle Plumping Cream This luxurious cream is a powerhouse of marine biotechnology, designed to smooth fine lines, plump the skin, and support firmness throughout the day. Formulated with Red Vegetal Coral and Brown Algae, it works beautifully under makeup and helps defend against visible signs of ageing, all while keeping skin supple and radiant. I personally LOVE it! Step 4: Consistent SPF SPF remains non-negotiable. A huge amount of visible ageing comes from cumulative UV exposure, so protecting the skin daily is one of the best investments you can make. We highly recommend: Hubislab Post Rays UV Protect Sun Block SPF50+ PA+++ This amazing multi-tasking sun block provides complete UV and antioxidant protection for ageing or stressed-out skin! Its non-irritating, has an SPF of 50+ and protects the skin against UV radiation, preventing dryness, dullness and signs of premature ageing including hyperpigmentation. Rich in peptides and collagen it keeps skin nourished, healthy and elastic and the invisible matte formula applies smoothly and stays on all day. With zinc oxide as its main ingredient, there is zero irritation, so it is ideal for all skin types including those with extremely sensitive and/or ageing skin. Step 5: Anti-Ageing Serum – night Night-time is when your skin naturally goes into repair and regeneration mode, making it the perfect time to introduce more intensive nourishing and rejuvenating ingredients. Look for serums containing retinol (Vitamin A), peptides and restorative ingredients that help support collagen production, improve texture and soften the appearance of fine lines over time. We highly recommend: Hubislab MineExo Peptide Ampoule This intensive serum harnesses advanced Exosome Technology and a potent peptide complex to deeply hydrate, firm, and rejuvenate stressed or ageing skin. Also packed with antioxidants like retinol, Vitamin C, and E, hyaluronic acid and hydrolysed collagen, it does it all! It boosts collagen, reduces wrinkles, improves elasticity, and strengthens the skin barrier. It really is outstanding! Step 6: Nourishing Night Cream We all know moisturising in the morning is essential, after all a good day cream acts as a protective barrier, locking in hydration, smoothing the skin, helping sunscreen apply more evenly, and even boosting the staying power of your makeup! But often as we age that moisturiser we use in the day, isn’t enough at night. Night creams tend to be richer in texture and packed with higher concentrations of active ingredients to promote renewal without the interruption of external aggressors. In fact, a good night cream will not only sooth and calm skin while you sleep, but also deliver lasting moisture while addressing common skin concerns such as moisture loss and skin ageing! They also help by improving cell turnover and lock in all the goodness of the serum you just applie! Night creams in your 50’s should focus on nourishment, comfort and skin barrier support while helping improve firmness and visible signs of ageing We highly recommend: Phytomer Night Recharge Youth Enhancing Cream Beautifully silky and ultra-comforting, this skin-replenishing formula is enriched with marine extracts that help detoxify, firm, and deeply nourish the skin overnight. It literally cocoons skin while you sleep working to reduce signs of fatigue, improve elasticity and bring back your glow by morning, seriously! It’s formulated with the best in marine ingredients including D-Tox Microalgae (designed to promote the elimination of free radicals, toxins, and pollutants detoxifying the skin while you sleep), and Marine Mannitol (an active ingredient which helps to re-oxygenate tired and "asphyxiated" cells) as well as Laminaria Digitata Extract, Salicornia Herbacea Extract and Jojoba & Sunflower Seed Wax to deeply nourish, revitalise and strengthen the skin! Both my colleagues and I simply love how it makes our skin look and feel when we wake (I’m talking glowy, plumper and just more youthful looking!) The biggest skincare mistake people make in their 50s The biggest skincare mistake so many of us make in our 50’s is trying to treat our skin the same way they treated it in their 30s and 40s. But what worked previously may now feel too harsh, drying or aggressive. Skin in our 50s generally responds much better to consistency, nourishment and barrier support than overly complicated routines packed with strong actives!  Remember more isn’t always better. And with the right care, your skin can still look incredibly luminous, healthy and vibrant for decades to come.

11 sleep habits that are affecting your skin (and how to fix them)

by Jo Boyden on May 08 2026
We all know sleep is very important for our health and wellbeing, after all we’ve been hearing it since we were kids! But did you know your sleep habits could be quietly affecting your skin too? What you do (and don't do) in the hours before bed (and even the way you sleep) can make a surprisingly significant difference to how your skin looks and feels by morning. We're talking dullness, dehydration, premature fine lines, breakouts and more, all influenced by habits most of us don't even think twice about! Keep reading to discover 11 common sleep habits that could be working against your skin, and the very simple changes (and skincare products!) that can help you wake up looking fresher, smoother and more radiant.   Firstly, why is sleep so important for your skin Sleep is one of the most underrated parts of a good skincare routine. This is because while you sleep your skin is doing something truly remarkable! Between the hours of approximately 10pm and 4am, cell turnover peaks, collagen production ramps up and your skin works overtime to repair the damage of the day (from UV exposure to pollution to the stress hormones your body spent the day accumulating!) In other words, sleep is your skin’s most powerful treatment! To learn more about what really happens to your skin while you sleep click here.   The sleep habits that are secretly damaging your skin and how to fix them Certain habits we’re all guilty of can seriously undermine the nighttime repair process without us even realising. From the pillowcase you’ve been sleeping on for too long to the skincare step you always skip when you’re tired, here are 10 sleep habits that might be quietly ruining your skin. Plus the easy fixes and products that can help.   Habit 1: You don’t always remove your makeup before bed It sounds obvious, but it’s one of the biggest culprits when it comes to damaging your skin overnight! Sleeping in makeup is never good for your skin. When not removed, the makeup, oil, environmental pollutants, and harmful free radicals you’ve gathered on your skin during the day seeps deeply into your pores causing breakouts, irritation, dryness and dullness, as well as speeding up the ageing process! Whether you’ve innocently fallen asleep on the couch watching your favourite Netflix show (I’m sure we’ve all been there!) or were out partying until the wee hours, remember just a few minutes cleansing your skin can make a huge difference to how it looks and feels (and I’m not just talking about the next day!) The Fix: Use the Phytomer Rose Visage Toning Cleansing Lotion. It’s an all-in-one makeup remover and toner and a BC favourite because it’s quick, effective, and easy to use (no water needed). Alcohol-free and infinitely gentle, this lotion removes makeup and tones without leaving an oily film. The skin is left velvety clean. Habit 2: You’re skipping your nighttime skincare Cleansing is step one, but it’s what you apply after that makes the real difference overnight. While you sleep, your skin does most of its repair work, it’s permeability increases, meaning it absorbs active ingredients more effectively than at any other time of day. So going to bed with bare, dehydrated skin means missing out on that recovery window big time! The fix: Your overnight routine doesn’t need to be complicated. A good serum and a night cream is genuinely enough. But they need to be the right ones! Rich enough to support overnight repair, and active enough to make the most of those peak absorption hours. We highly recommend a nourishing night cream like Phytomer Night Recharge Youth Enhancing Cream. It’s a beautifully nourishing cream that quite literally cocoons skin in rich silky marine goodness. It helps support renewal, detoxify, firm and deeply nourish your complexion. What’s more it’s specifically formulated to recharge your skin overnight, so you wake up looking gorgeously glowy and rested even if you didn't get your full eight hours! It’s one of my personal absolute favourites!  Habit 3: Or you’re overloading your skin with strong actives instead! If you’re the far from lazy type and you love to slap on lots of skincare goodness before bed, we know it can be tempting to layer on every active you own! But overdoing it at night can compromise your skin barrier leading to sensitivity, dryness and irritation. So if your face feels sensitive, tight or reactive, your nighttime routine may need a little simplifying! The fix: Focus on consistency rather than complexity. A gentle cleanse, one targeted treatment and a nourishing moisturiser is often enough to keep skin happy and balanced.   Habit 4: You’re sleeping on the wrong pillowcase This one surprises people. Your pillowcase has more impact on your skin than you might expect and I’m sorry to say that your regular cotton pillowcase is not your complexion’s friend! This is because cotton is absorbent, so it annoyingly draws moisture away from your skin as you sleep! It also creates friction as you move, which contributes to sleep lines, crease marks and the deepening of wrinkles! If you’re applying a beautiful night cream and then sleeping on cotton, you’re essentially letting the pillowcase absorb half of it! The fix: Switch to a silk or satin pillowcase. Silk creates significantly less friction against the skin, doesn’t absorb your skincare products nearly as efficiently, and is naturally temperature-regulating which also helps with any skin that tends towards redness or sensitivity overnight. It’s one of the simplest, most passive upgrades you can make for your skin (and your hair, while you’re at it). If you love your cotton pillowcase too much to make the change to satin or silk (I get you) try doubling down on overnight hydration to compensate for what a cotton pillowcase might be stealing! The Pevonia Power Repair Hyaluronic Acid Hydra Serum applied before your night cream helps lock moisture into the skin so it stays there all night, pillowcase notwithstanding!   Habit 5: You’re not changing your pillowcase often enough No matter what type of pillowcase you opt for, a pillowcase that hasn't been changed in over a week is a breeding ground for bacteria, oil, sweat, hair product residue, and dead skin cells, all of which can contribute to congestion, irritation and breakouts! The fix: Aim to swap your pillowcase at least once or twice a week preferably. It sounds like a lot but the difference for breakout-prone and congestion-prone skin can be genuinely significant. If you’re dealing with persistent breakouts or unexplained congestion especially on your cheeks, your pillowcase is one of the first places to look. Habit 6: You’re eating or drinking the wrong things before bed What you consume in the hours before sleep has a more direct impact on your skin than most people realise! Alcohol is one of the biggest offenders! And yes we know that glass of vino or two might be calling your name after a long, hard day’s work but just know that if you want to sleep more soundly it’s not the best idea! This is because alcohol dehydrates the skin, disrupts the skin barrier, increases inflammation and significantly reduces sleep quality, meaning your skin won’t get the repair time it needs! Then there are high-salt meals which can cause fluid retention overnight, showing up as puffiness (particularly around the eyes) by morning. High-sugar foods spike cortisol and insulin levels, which can trigger inflammation and contribute to breakouts! Oh and many of us love a cup of tea before bed too, but caffeine, like alcohol is a no no. It is a central nervous system stimulant that blocks adenosine, a chemical in the brain that makes you feel tired. Consuming it within even 4–6 hours of bedtime reduces sleep quality, keeps you in lighter sleep stages, and can cause insomnia, fragmented sleep, and increased alertness when you should be resting and your skin repairing! The fix: Try to finish eating at least two hours before bed. Keep alcohol to a minimum on weeknights. Drink a large glass of water before sleeping (dehydration is one of the most straightforward causes of dull, tired-looking morning skin). And if you know you’ve had a salty or indulgent evening, double down on your overnight skincare to compensate. Habit 7: You wear your hair down for bed I know it feels better having your hair down for bed (this is my preference too) but doing so can mean a few breakouts in the morning. This is because your hair’s natural oils (in addition to any hair products you might be using) can clog your pores and cause irritation! The fix: Ideally you’ll want to wear your hair in a loose ponytail or bun (not up tight which can cause damage or lead to headaches!) Another option is to sleep in a satin or silk bonnet or cap which can prevent any breakage, friction, tangles and frizz and keep hair intact.   Habit 8: Your room temperature is too warm or too cold Here’s one that genuinely surprises people. Your bedroom temperature has a direct impact on both the quality of your sleep and the condition of your skin while you sleep. If your room is too warm it can cause you to sweat during sleep, which dehydrates the skin, clogs pores with sweat and oil and contributes to breakouts and congestion. It also disrupts deep sleep (which is when your skin does its most important repair work!) Night sweats strip the skin of moisture, leaving it dehydrated and dull by morning. And if your room is too cold, it causes the blood vessels in the skin to constrict, reducing the flow of oxygen and nutrients to skin cells overnight. Very dry, cold air (particularly in heated or air-conditioned rooms) also draws moisture out of the skin, contributing to dehydration, tightness and increased sensitivity, especially in those with already dry or reactive skin! The fix: The ideal sleep temperature is between 16 and 20 °C— cool but not cold. If your room tends to run warm, a fan or light air conditioning will help. If it’s cold and dry, a humidifier makes a real difference to the moisture levels in the air and in turn your skin!   Habit 9: You’re "screen-scrolling" in the dark That "one last scroll" through Instagram isn't just hurting your sleep quality, the blue light from your phone can actually contribute to skin ageing and hyperpigmentation. Plus, as we know the lack of sleep prevents your skin from entering its peak regeneration phase. The fix: Put the phone away 30 minutes before bed. Use that time to apply your skincare intentionally, relax and get yourself and your skin ready to recoup.   Habit 10: You’re sleeping on your side or stomach Sleep position is one of those things nobody tells you about until you start noticing the crease lines on your face at 9am and realise they haven’t faded by noon! Sleeping on your side or face-down pushes the skin against the pillow for hours at a time, creating compression wrinkles that (over years) can become permanent. It also causes fluid to pool on whichever side of your face is resting downward, contributing to one-sided puffiness and under-eye bags! The fix: Try sleeping on your back where possible, and we know all to well that if you’re a committed side sleeper this is one of the hardest habits to change! A contoured or butterfly-shaped pillow can help keep you in position. And in the meantime, addressing puffiness in the morning with the right eye product makes a genuine visible difference! We recommend the Pevonia C Évolutive Eye Gel. Cool it in the fridge overnight and apply first thing in the morning. The chilled gel instantly de-puffs, reduces the appearance of dark circles and refreshes the eye area making whatever your sleep position did to your face look a lot more like a good night’s rest. Or reach for the Vie Collection Chrono Eyes Puffiness Dark Circles Wrinkle Cream which targets all three classic morning-eye concerns in one step. Habit 11: You’re not getting enough (or good enough) sleep This is the big one. Lack of sleep affects everything from collagen production to hydration levels, leaving skin looking tired, dull and less resilient. The fix: 7 to 9 hours of quality sleep is the goal. Consistent sleep and wake times make a bigger difference than most people expect, your skin’s repair processes are partly governed by your circadian rhythm, so regularity matters as much as duration. If you have trouble getting to sleep here are 7 self-care rituals to help you and your skin indulge in blissful slumber, as recommended by the experts.   Your skin does its best work while you sleep so your nighttime habits matter more than you might think. The good news is that small, simple changes can make a big difference, helping you wake up to skin that looks fresher, smoother and more radiant.

Why marine ingredients are so good for your skin

by Jo Boyden on May 01 2026
When you think about the ocean, you probably think about holidays, sunshine and that effortlessly glowy skin you always seem to come home with (well I like to think I do!) But have you ever wondered why a few days by the sea does actually leave your complexion looking so much better? It's not just the relaxation (although that of course helps!) The ocean is one of nature's most extraordinary sources of skin-loving ingredients (think seaweed, algae, marine collagen, sea water minerals and deep-sea extracts) all of which have a remarkable ability to transform the look and feel of your skin (we’re talking next-level hydration, boosted radiance, improved firmness and a calmer, stronger skin barrier.) And while the skincare world has long recognised the power of marine ingredients, right now they are having a well-deserved moment, and once you understand what they can do for your skin, you'll wonder how your skincare routine ever existed without them! Keep reading to discover why marine ingredients are so good for your skin and the sea-inspired skincare we know you’ll love!   The marine ingredients to look for in your skincare Honestly, we aren’t joking when we say the sea is a treasure trove of high-performance actives! Here are the key ones to know (and look for in your skincare) when it comes to delivering visible results; Seaweed (the hydration hero) Seaweed is one of the most powerful marine ingredients in skincare. Naturally rich in vitamins (A, B, C, D & E), minerals (such as magnesium, manganese, calcium, copper, iodine, iron, potassium, phosphorus & zinc), proteins, essential fatty acids and amino acids, seaweed helps to deeply hydrate, strengthen the skin barrier and improve overall skin health. Seaweed is also known for its ability to boost radiance and leave the skin looking fresh, plump and revitalised. Oh, and it’s packed with antioxidants to fight off environmental damage and pollution too! Topically applying seaweed has next to endless, positive results! Marine Collagen (for firmness and elasticity) Marine collagen is a go-to ingredient for ageing skin. Unlike some traditional sources, marine collagen is known for its superior bioavailability. It helps support the skin’s structure, improving firmness and elasticity and "plumps" the skin from the inside out, reducing the appearance of fine lines. It’s particularly beneficial if your skin is starting to feel thinner, less resilient or lacking bounce. Sea Water & Marine Minerals (for balance and skin health) Sea water is far more complex than its name suggests. It contains 104 trace elements essential to the vitality and health of human skin (many of which we are chronically deficient in thanks to modern diets and lifestyle!) It’s naturally rich in essential minerals like magnesium, calcium and potassium, which help to rebalance and remineralise the skin. These minerals support hydration, improve skin function and help maintain a healthy, glowing complexion. Here's something interesting! Our bodies are naturally deficient in negative ions. The sea air and ocean water are naturally rich in these negative ions which is one of the main reasons we feel so energised, revitalised and clear-headed after spending time by the sea. Today, professional marine skincare is able to capture and deliver these same benefits topically. Amazing right? Sea Salt (for detoxification) Sea salt a powerful exfoliant with healing and deeply detoxifying properties. It absorbs dirt, impurities and toxins from the skin while delivering a mineral hit that improves circulation, boosts lymphatic drainage and helps reduce inflammation. The mineral content ( particularly magnesium, calcium and potassium) helps restore the skin's protective barrier function and keeps it hydrated and resilient. Marine Magnesium (for calming, balance and skin resilience) Found naturally in sea water, marine magnesium is one of the most essential minerals for skin health, and 90% of us are deficient in it! It’s best known for relaxing tired muscles but when applied topically, offers a multitude of powerful therapeutic benefits! It helps combat dryness, fluid retention and the ageing process, and has been shown to improve overall skin texture and tone. Importantly, research shows that topical application of magnesium is more efficiently absorbed than taking a supplement as it penetrates directly through the skin and into the bloodstream, taking immediate effect! Marine magnesium also plays a role in maintaining healthy hydration levels, helping the skin feel more comfortable, resilient and visibly balanced. Algae Extracts (for protection and repair) Different types of algae (like red, green and brown algae) are packed with proteins (amino acids make up to 60% of most of these plants), phosphorus, magnesium, copper, calcium and both vitamin A & B1. While algae is not as potent as seaweed they still have a multitude of benefits from soothing, regenerating and barrier repair (they also protect skin from environmental stress and premature ageing), explaining its frequent use in anti-ageing products! Marine Bio-Actives (for overall skin performance) These are advanced ocean-derived ingredients designed to support multiple skin functions at once, from hydration and repair to firming and radiance. They work in harmony with the skin, making them incredibly effective yet gentle.   Why your skin will love marine ingredients To summarise the outstanding benefits of marine ingredients we have broken it down for you. 1. They provide deep, long-lasting hydration Marine ingredients are known for their ability to attract and retain moisture, helping to keep the skin plump, smooth and comfortable. This makes them especially beneficial for dry, dehydrated or ageing skin; 2. They support for skin barrier function A healthy skin barrier is everything. Marine actives help strengthen and protect the skin, making it more resilient against environmental stressors like pollution and climate. 3. At-home facial peels: Benefits, tips and the best products

by Jo Boyden on Apr 30 2026
When it comes to achieving brighter, smoother, more refined skin, few treatments deliver results quite like a face peel! But if the phrase “face peel” makes you want to run for the hills, you may not have discovered the gentle, DYI at-home options now available for all skin types too! Choosing the right one can literally transform the look of your skin, helping to improve texture, tone and overall radiance, and all from the comfort of your own home (although who doesn’t love a visit to their local salon or spa.) Sound like something your skin could benefit from? Then keep reading, because we’re breaking down everything you need to know about at-home face peels, including how they work, who they’re best for, and the products worth adding to your routine!   So, what is an at-home face peel? At-home face peels are one of those skincare treatments that can deliver truly rewarding results from the first application when they’re used properly. They’re designed to remove dead skin cells, accelerate cell turnover and reveal fresher, smoother skin underneath, so better texture and a brighter, more refined complexion! And thanks to the variety of formulas now available, there’s something to suit almost every skin type and concern. Unlike physical scrubs, peels work either enzymatically or chemically to gently dissolve the bonds that hold dull, lifeless skin on the surface.   What does a face peel do? Face peels are one of the most effective ways to improve your skin tone and texture! They work by helping to exfoliate the skin more deeply than a basic cleanser or exfoliator. Depending on the formula, a face peel may use enzymes, AHAs or other resurfacing ingredients to loosen dead skin cells and encourage a smoother, fresher-looking surface. That can help improve the look of: Dullness. Uneven texture. Congestion and blackheads. Fine lines. Mild pigmentation. Rough or lacklustre skin.   When used correctly, peels can also help other skincare products absorb more effectively, since they’re not having to compete with a buildup of dead skin on the surface. So, if your skin is looking uneven, lacking radiance or feeling congested we can’t tell you enough how the right face peel with make a huge difference!   Understanding the different types of peels and the right one for you At-home face peels have come a long way. What was once considered a professional-only treatment is now available in formulas that are effective, easy to use and suitable for a range of skin types. The key is knowing which one to choose, and how to use it correctly. Enzyme Peels  These are the gentlest form of peel. They work by using natural enzymes (often fruit derived papaya and pineapple) to very gently break down dead skin cells, dissolve buildup on the skin’s surface and smooth and soften without irritation (which can come with some stronger chemical peels) making them ideal for sensitive skin. Top recommendations: Pevonia Enzymo Spherides Peeling Cream Best for: Sensitive skin, dullness, uneven texture. Beginner-friendly This is a beautiful option if you want a more gentle, enzyme-based peel and one I recommend to everyone who wants results without irritation. Its uses pineapple and papaya enzymes to gently dissolve impurities, dead skin cells and buildup, and combined with chamomile, calendula, ginkgo biloba and lemon peel oil, it leaves your complexion smoother, brighter and instantly refreshed. No tingling, no redness, just glow (honestly). It’s the perfect option if you’re new to peels! Simply apply a thin layer to cleansed skin, wet your fingertips with warm water (this will help to ‘wake up’ the enzymes) and work the peeling cream with gentle massage movements into skin (keeping away from the eyes), leave on for 5 minutes and then wet your fingers with warm water again and re-work one more time. Remove product thoroughly with pads moist with warm water and then cleanse your face with the appropriate cleanser according to skin type.  “Don't let the peeling word scare you. I've been using this product for 20 years (I'm 45yo now). Back then it was to help gently clear my skin with those pesky zits (rather than roughly exfoliate), and now I use it to slough away dead skin and keep me looking younger. It's the enzymes. The day after I use this product, I have people at work comment on how good my skin looks. (I don't wear makeup). People routinely say I look 7 years younger than I am. This is a non-negotiable must have product!” – Dee M   Naturys Sensitive Enzymatic Peeling Cream Best for: Ultra‑sensitive, reactive or compromised skin If you want to discover the results of a peel but your skin gets upset easily, this is your safest bet. Specifically designed for delicate and sensitive skin, it uses lemon and apple extracts, soybean oil, rice bran oil and grape skin combined with super‑gentle botanical enzymes to exfoliate without friction or acids while calming and nourishing skin. Think of it as a soft reset for your skin! Smoother, clearer and more radiant, without any risk of irritation. To use it simply apply to clean, dry skin one to two times a week.   Massage gently over the face, avoiding the eye area, and leave on for 5–7 minutes to allow the enzymes to work.  Rinse thoroughly with warm water. Follow with a toner and moisturiser for best results.   Acid based (chemical) Peels These are more active than enzyme peels and work deeper to refine texture, improve tone and support collagen renewal. They are incredibly effective and results-driven, targeting pigmentation, fine lines and congestion. They are an amazing option for those who aren’t concerned with sensitive or reactive skin. Top recommendations:  Vie Collection Glyco 10 Resurfacing Acid Concentrate Best for: pigmentation, fine lines, stubborn texture  This is a more advanced peel and it’s a standout! Plus it’s great for the majority of skin types! Instead of a cream-based formula that you remove, this is a light gel with 10% glycolic acid, so it works deeper into the skin to refine texture, smooth wrinkles, brighten skin, fade dark spots and refine pores! If you want a clinic‑style result at home, this is the one for you! It’s a great choice for skin that wants a more noticeable smoothing effect and is ideal if you’re targeting pigmentation, uneven tone or signs of ageing. Just be sure to start slowly though and build up as your skin adjusts.  To use it apply 1–2 drops to cleansed face and neck (as you would a serum) and then apply your moisturiser. Once skin has adjusted use 1 to 3 times per week. Avoid the eye area and always apply sunscreen during the day when using exfoliating products. “My therapist recommended this concentrate to me for daily exfoliation. I have rosacea and very sensitive skin and this is gentle enough to not cause any irritation but it’s extremely effective. I use it twice daily and my skin is very soft and smooth as a result.” – Amelia   Vie Collection Night Peel Progressive Resurfacing Cream Best for: Ageing skin, uneven tone, long‑term results  This peel (and overnight treatment) is perfect for those wanting consistent results without the intensity of a traditional peel.  It’s a progressive peel meaning it works gently and slowly overnight while you sleep, this means less irritation and more consistent results. It uses a blend of AHAs (glycolic acid) and resurfacing actives to boost cell turnover and gradually smooth, brighten and refine the skin so you’ll wake up with a fresher, more luminous complexion by morning, and results get better week after week! It’s great if you want a peel that fits seamlessly into your nightly routine. Unlike traditional peels it’s not a rinse off treatment, you leave it on overnight just like you do your night moisturiser. “I just turned 63 and decided to spend a bit more money on a night peel product. I saw that this product and thought I would give it a try. I did and couldn't be happier! My face looks smoother, definitely softer and any imperfections are gone.” – Nicole   Hybrid Peels Hybrid face peels combine multiple exfoliation methods, typically chemical (AHAs), enzymatic and sometimes gentle physical exfoliation, all in one formula. This allows it to resurface the skin effectively while remaining gentle. The result is smoother, brighter skin with less irritation, making it ideal for those wanting results without a harsh, aggressive peel  Top recommendation:  Phytomer Resurfacing Peel Best for: dullness, rough texture, uneven tone  This is your “instant results” peel. It is formulated with marine AHA’s (seaweed derived acids) that work to loosen and dissolve dead skin cells smoothing skin and improving radiance. Combined with Bacillus Ferment (enzyme) it helps gently refine your skin too. It also contains Lithothamnium Calcareum (algae powder) which provides a light manual exfoliation effect which helps enhance the overall result. So in short it helps smooth the skin, refine pores and boost radiance without compromising skin comfort. The combination of effective exfoliation with a gentle approach, makes it suitable for regular use so it’s a brilliant weekly option for anyone wanting a noticeable glow boost! All you need to do is apply a small amount to damp skin (again avoiding the eye contour). Leave on for five minutes, then gently massage with circular movements for up to one minute. Rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water and follow with your usual skincare cream.  “AMAZING PRODUCT! One of my favorite Phytomer products!!! I use it once a week and my face always looks glowing and so fresh! Plus, my acne has dramatically improved since using this. I can tell when I skip a week (because I'm lazy)....my face looks dull and lifeless. This is a MUST PURCHASE product!!!” – Jill F    How to use an at-home face peel safely  Using a peel correctly is key to getting results without irritation! Remember to start slowly! Start with once a week (depending on the strength of the formula), or less if your skin is sensitive. Patch test first if you’re unsure, and follow the product instructions carefully, especially when using stronger acid-based formulas. Make sure you always apply your peel to clean, dry skin, following the specific instructions and using in the evening is best.  Make sure you don’t combine your peel with other strong actives on the same night and always follow with a hydrating serum or moisturiser to support the skin barrier. And most importantly wear SPF daily, as exfoliated skin is more sensitive to the sun.   At-home face peels can be a fantastic way to give your skin a noticeable refresh. Think a smoother, brighter and more refined complexion. The key is choosing the right formula for your skin type and using it thoughtfully, so you get all the glow, smoothness and clarity without anu irritation.

Say goodbye to tired eyes: 8 expert tips for a brighter look

by Jo Boyden on Apr 24 2026
Nothing gives away a late night, busy week or stress quite like our eyes. Puffiness, dark circles, dryness and fine lines can make us look more tired (and older!) than we actually are. But before we reach for the concealer (although who doesn’t love a good concealer) there are a number of ways (and products) to refresh the delicate eye area and fast too! Keep reading for 8 expert tips to transform your tired eyes for a youthful, brighter look.   Firstly though, why do your eyes look so tired? Before reaching for the right products, it’s important to understand what is actually causing your eyes to look older than they are. The skin around our eyes is thinner, more delicate and often the first area to show signs of fatigue, dehydration, stress and ageing. In fact, the skin around our eyes is up to ten times thinner than the skin on the rest of our face! Crazy right? That’s because it has fewer oil glands, less collagen, and reduced blood circulation compared to all the other areas. And when we are tired or our skin is poorly hydrated it appears even more thin, more transparent, making the underlying vessels more visible! Add to that the fact that we blink around 10,000 times a day, squint at screens, sleep on our faces and rub our eyes when we're tired, it's no wonder the eye area takes such a hit. The result? Dark circles, puffiness, fine lines, crow's feet, under-eye bags and that general hollowed-out, less-than-rested look no matter how much sleep we may actually have had.   How to fix your tired eyes We talked to the BC experts, put together a guide, and this is how to best refresh tired eyes quickly, and with the right products, results can be almost instant!   1. Start with a cold compress One of the fastest ways to de-puff tired eyes is cooling the area. The cold helps constrict blood vessels, reduce swelling and wake up the eye area almost immediately. Try: Chilled eye masks Cold spoons from the fridge placed over the eyes for 60 seconds can work wonders for an immediate "eye-lift" effect. Cold cucumbers (this is thanks to the vitamin c and caffeic acid in cucumbers!) Cotton pads soaked in cool water Cold potato slices (straight from the fridge) is another goodie and fantastic natural remedy. The enzymes and the astringent properties in the potatoes help reduce inflammation as well as tighten the skin too. An eye gel Tip: Keep your eye gel in the fridge for an instant morning refresh.   2. Hydrate the eye area properly Tired eyes often aren’t just tired, they’re dehydrated. When the delicate under-eye area lacks moisture, fine lines look deeper, skin appears duller, and concealer can crease more noticeably. Look for eye products containing: Hyaluronic acid Vitamin C Marine collagen Ceramides Squalane These ingredients help plump, smooth and brighten the skin. BC Pick: Pevonia “C” Evolutive Eye Gel It’s not only a firm favourite for refreshing tired eyes with the entire BC team, but the BC customers love it too. It’s a non-sticky, lightweight gel that is not only beautifully cooling on application, calming and depuffing the delicate eye area, but it also helps hydrate, brighten and smooth the eyes, reducing the appearance of fine lines too! What’s more it’s formulated with vitamin c, hyaluronic acid, marine collagen and ginkgo biloba, as well as green coffee! “I had a problem with puffy old looking eyes and was hoping that this gel would do the job as I was hating the way my eyes looked and I'll tell you, this gel worked INSTANTLY on me! It's a very good de-puffer for sure!” – Suzette   3. Target puffiness with massage Fluid retention is a major reason eyes look puffy in the morning and gently massaging the area around your eyes can make a huge difference as it improves circulation and calms the fluid build-up around your eyes. Use your ring finger to gently tap from the inner corner outward or lightly roll a chilled jade roller around the orbital bone. This encourages lymphatic drainage and can make eyes look fresher within minutes! Remember: Be gentle! The eye area doesn’t like rough handling. 4. Invest in a proper eye treatment The eye area deserves more than leftover face moisturiser. Targeted eye products are designed with textures and ingredients suited to thinner skin, helping address puffiness, lines, dark circles and dullness more effectively. Look for products formulated with: Vitamin C Niacinamide Peptides Caffeine Light-reflecting minerals BC Pick: Vie Collection Chrono Eyes Puffiness-Dark Circles Wrinkle Cream Formulated with advanced anti-ageing ingredients including encapsulated high molecular weight hyaluronic acid, injectables-like peptides, phytosterols and fatty acids, Vitamin C and Niacinamide (Vitamin B3), this luxurious cream works to smooth wrinkles by boosting collagen production while its decongestion properties help reduce puffiness and diminish the look of tired eyes. The cream also -tackles dark circles with brightening agents that work to even out skin tone, leaving you looking well-rested and refreshed, yes even after a late-night Netflix binge which I am often guilty of! What’s even better is its lightweight, non-greasy texture that absorbs quickly making it perfect for use under makeup or as part of your nightly skincare routine. “This is a wonderful eye cream, it gives immediate gratification thanks to a pearlescent finish that instantly brightens the eye area and it has definitely calmed my puffiness, lightened by dark circles and even smoothed my wrinkles! It’s truly a fabulous eye cream that is well worth the price tag.” – Lisa M 5. Use caffeine for a wake-up effect Caffeine isn’t just for coffee. In skincare, it can help temporarily tighten the look of puffiness and stimulate circulation. That’s why caffeine eye products are brilliant before work, events or mornings when you need to fake eight hours sleep.   6. Correct concealer application A concealer can be a lifesaver when it comes to tired eyes but if it’s not the right concealer or it’s applied incorrectly it can sometimes make tired eyes look worse! To brighten instantly: With a good eye gel or cream moisturise the eye area first so it’s hydrated Use a nourishing concealer that is lighter than your foundation Opt for a peach based concealer to neutralize dark blue or purple under-eye circles Apply concealer only where needed Set sparingly with powder Remember heavy concealer often settles into fine lines and adds years. BC pick: ELES Dual Action Concealer.  Formulated with hyaluronic acid, vitamin c, peptides and caffeine, this anti-ageing concealer is a powerhouse that actually helps to gradually improve skin’s texture while concealing those obvious under eye dark circles. Its moisturising formula provides continuous hydration as well as a natural longwearing finish meaning it lasts for hours without seeping into fine lines and wrinkles! “I love this product been using it for 2 years. You only need the littlest amount to hide dark under eyes reduce the look of wrinkles around your nose and mouth. I always have to have it. – Josephine P 7. Sleep smarter! If tired eyes are a daily issue, prevention matters! Try: Sleeping slightly elevated Reducing salty foods late at night Limiting alcohol Managing allergies Taking screen breaks and no screen an hour before bed! Your eyes often reflect what’s happening internally.   8. Don’t forget the "inside-out" approach While professional skincare is your best defence, don't underestimate the power of hydration. Drinking a large glass of water first thing in the morning helps flush out the excess salt that might be causing your under-eye bags.   Remember tired eyes are very common, but they’re also treatable. A few small changes, the right ingredients, and targeted products can quickly make the eye area look brighter, smoother and far more awake.

The best pore-refining products according to you

The best pore-refining products according to you

by Jo Boyden on Apr 02 2026
We’ve talked a lot recently about the best products for sensitive skin, how to calm rosacea and how to strengthen a compromised skin barrier. Well now it’s time to talk pores! After all we all have them (even those people we swear have the most ‘perfect’ skin!) But when pores appear enlarged, congested or simply more visible that we’d like, they can really affect how smooth and refined our complexion looks. The truth is, we can’t actually physically ‘shrink’ our pores, but we can cleverly minimise their appearance with the right products! From clarifying cleansers to targeted serums, pore-refining formulas are designed to help keep skin looking clearer, smoother and more balanced. Keep reading to discover the 4 pore-refining products that consistently deliver visible results, according to you!   Firstly, why do your pores look enlarged in the first place? Pore size is largely genetic, so you definitely can’t shrink them permanently,  but you absolutely can minimise their appearance, and consistently so. The main culprits behind enlarged looking pores are excess sebum (oil) production, congestion and dead skin cell build-up sitting inside the pore. Loss of collagen and elasticity around the pore walls as skin ages is a big contributor too, as is sun damage. Targeting these at the right step in your routine (cleansing, treating, and refining) is the key to seeing real consistent results!   The pore-refining products you (and we!) love   Medicalia Clarifying Cleanser Using a good cleanser when pores are clogged with oil, makeup and debris is key to refining their appearance and this clarifying cleanser is a stand out for oily and congested skin! It works to deeply cleanse and purify the skin without over-stripping, helping to regulate excess oil while keeping the complexion balanced. With consistent use, pores appear clearer and less visible, and skin looks noticeably brighter and more refined overall too! “I have very oily skin and this product has helped so much. My pores are not just visibly smaller but almost un-noticable. I have had comments on how bright my skin looks lately so this tells me im on a winner!” - Lauri B Pevonia Gentle Exfoliating Cleanser If your skin tends to be sensitive but you still want that smooth, refined finish, this cleanser is a fantastic option. It gently exfoliates while cleansing, helping to remove buildup and refine the look of pores without causing irritation. Skin is left feeling soft, smooth, and perfectly balanced, never tight or irritated. “I have some sensitivity in my skin and this is the only product that I have used that does not hurt or inflame my skin. It has also made my skin so soft and minimized my pore size...AWESOME” - Tessa M Pevonia Age-Correction Micro-Pores Bio-Active Serum Once your skin is properly cleansed, targeted serums are where the real transformation happens and the Pevonia Age Correction Micro Pores Bio Active Serum is one that realy does exactly what it promises! Designed specifically to minimise the appearance of enlarged pores, it works by helping to regulate oil production while refining and smoothing the skin’s surface. It’s lightweight, effective, and perfect for areas where pores tend to be more visible (think nose, cheeks, and T-zone). “Wonderful product, does exactly what it says. Minimises large pores and reduces oily skin around my nose and cheeks. Highly recommend!”- Rhiannon K Phytomer Emergence Even Skin Tone Refining Serum If uneven texture and post-acne scarring are part of your concern, this serum is a must! It works to smooth, refine, and improve overall skin texture while helping to create a more even, polished-looking complexion. Over time, pores appear less noticeable as the skin becomes smoother and more uniform.  Honestly this is the kind of product that can earn a permanent spot in your routine when you start seeing visible improvements in your skin texture and clarity. “I first received this as a sample and decided to purchase it because I saw a huge difference in the texture of my skin. I now use it daily and would not be without it. I am in my 30s and have large pores with acne scaring. This product makes my skin so much smoother and beautiful.” – June Expert tips for minimising the look of your enlarged pores Remember to also keep skin clean so this means daily cleansing morning and night. A build up of oil and debris in your pores makes them look so much larger! Even if your skin is sensitive, exfoliating is a must to keep texture smooth and pores minimized. Never skip on your daily moisturiser, dehydrated skin can actually exaggerate your pores. Be consistent with your pore refining routine and never skip on your SPF!   When it comes to your pores, it’s not about trying to eliminate then which is impossible! It’s about keeping them clean, clear and refined! With the right combination of cleansing products and targeted treatments you will notice a big improvement in skin texture and the appearance of your pore size!
8 ingredients your sensitive skin should avoid

8 ingredients your sensitive skin should avoid

by Jo Boyden on Mar 31 2026
If you have sensitive skin, you already know it can feel like everything is a potential trigger. That new “gentle, nourishing, and dermatologist-tested” product that sounded so ideal for your easily irritated complexion, turned out to be not-so-gentle after all, leaving you with a red, stinging face! The thing is, sensitive skin is often the result of a thinner or compromised skin barrier. This means irritants, allergens, and harsh actives can sneak in far more easily than they would for someone with a more resilient complexion. What makes it even trickier is that the culprits aren’t always obvious. In fact, many of the ingredients most likely to trigger sensitivity are hiding in plain sight! Even in products marketed specifically for "sensitive" skin! That’s why becoming confident at reading ingredient labels is one of the most valuable skincare skills you can have. Knowing what to leave out of your routine is just as important as knowing what to include. And once you understand which ingredients tend to cause trouble, caring for sensitive skin becomes so much easier, we promise! To help you shop smarter and keep your complexion calm, we’ve rounded up the top ingredient’s experts agree sensitive skin should always avoid.   What your sensitive skin really means Sensitive skin isn’t just a “type”, it’s a condition. At its core, it usually comes down to a compromised skin barrier, which means your skin isn’t as strong or resilient as it should be. As a result, it reacts more easily to ingredients, environmental stress, and even changes in routine. This is why products that work beautifully for others can cause redness, stinging, breakouts, or inflammation for you. The goal with sensitive skin isn’t to overload it with actives, it’s to protect, strengthen, and support it!   The 8 ingredients to avoid From strong fragrances to overly drying alcohols, there are a few common ingredients that can make sensitive skin worse without you realising it. 1. Fragrance (synthetic & natural) Fragrance is one of the most common triggers for sensitive skin and one of the easiest to overlook! It’s often listed as “parfum” or “aroma” and can even include essential oils. Why avoid it:Fragrance can cause irritation, redness, and allergic reactions, especially with repeated use. Even natural fragrance isn’t always gentle on reactive skin.   2. Denatured alcohol (Alcohol Denat.) Not all alcohols are bad but denatured alcohol is one your skin could definitely do without! Why avoid it:It strips the skin of its natural oils, weakens the barrier, and can leave your skin feeling tight, dry, and more prone to irritation.   3. Essential Oils While they sound calming and natural, essential oils can be surprisingly reactive for sensitive skin. Why avoid them:Ingredients like citrus oils, peppermint, and eucalyptus can trigger redness and sensitivity, particularly in already compromised skin.   4. Exfoliating acids (overuse of AHAs/BHAs) Exfoliation is important, we know this but with sensitive skin, more is definitely not more! Why be cautious:Over-exfoliating can damage the skin barrier, leading to increased redness, irritation, and sensitivity. Strong acids or frequent use can quickly tip your skin out of balance. To read about exfoliation and sensitive skin and what you should do, click here.   5. Sulphates (SLS & SLES) These are commonly found in cleansers and are responsible for that foamy, “squeaky clean” feeling. Why avoid them:They can be overly stripping, removing essential moisture and leaving the skin barrier vulnerable and irritated, not good when you already have a compromised skin barrier!   6. Strong retinol and retinoids Retinol and retinoids can be outstanding when it comes to ageing but are very powerful! Therefore, they need to be approached very carefully if your skin is sensitive. Why be cautious:They can cause peeling, dryness, and irritation, particularly if introduced too quickly or used in high strengths. For everything you need to know about retinol and sensitive skin click here. And if retinol still scares you, here are some outstanding alternatives for your sensitive skin.   7. High-Concentration Vitamin C (L-Ascorbic Acid) Vitamin C is a glow-boosting favourite, but not all forms are suitable for sensitive skin. Why be cautious:High concentrations can be too stimulating, leading to stinging and redness. Gentler derivatives are often a better option. Look for vitamin C serums formulated with a gentle derivative such as sodium ascorbyl phosphate, magnesium ascorbyl phosphate or Tetrahexyldecyl ascorbate, these vitamin C forms are considered more stable and less irritating. 8. Artificial Colours & Dyes These are often added purely for aesthetic reasons — and your skin doesn’t need them. Why avoid them:They offer no skin benefit and can increase the risk of irritation or allergic reactions.   What skincare ingredients your sensitive skin does need Instead of focusing only on what to avoid, it’s equally important to prioritise ingredients that will support and strengthen your skin barrier. These include; Niacinamide (Vitamin B3) Niacinamide enhances the skin’s natural barrier by increasing the production of ceramides, which are essential for locking in moisture and protecting the skin from environmental stressors. Niacinamide is also known for its anti-inflammatory properties, making it a great choice for those with sensitive, rosacea or acne-prone skin. It helps to calm redness and irritation, leading to a clearer, more even complexion. Ceramides When you suffer from sensitive or easily reactive skin, ceramides can be especially beneficial. They help to protect, repair and strengthen your skins barrier, shielding it from external aggressors such as harsh weather conditions, bacteria and pollutants. This helps reduce skin redness, irritation and sensitivity. Ceramides also help your skin hold onto moisture. They act like little sponges, preventing water loss and keeping your skin hydrated and plump! Hyaluronic acid Hyaluronic acid is a powerful hydrating ingredient that attracts and retains moisture within the skin. For sensitive skin, maintaining hydration is key to keeping the barrier strong and functioning optimally. By drawing water into the skin, it helps to reduce dryness, tightness and discomfort, leaving the complexion feeling soft, smooth and comfortably hydrated without causing irritation. Panthenol (Vitamin B5) Panthenol is a deeply soothing and restorative ingredient that works to calm irritation while supporting the skin’s natural repair process. It helps to strengthen the skin barrier, improve hydration levels, and reduce redness, making it particularly beneficial for compromised or reactive skin. It also leaves the skin feeling soft, supple, and more resilient over time. Calming botanicals (like White Water Lily (Nymphaea Alba), Chamomile, Centella Asiatica, Cucumber & Aloe Vera) Calming botanicals are essential for soothing sensitive skin and reducing visible signs of irritation. Ingredients such as White Water Lily, centella asiatica, chamomile, and aloe vera work to gently calm inflammation, minimise redness, and provide lightweight hydration. They help restore balance to the skin, leaving it feeling comforted, refreshed, and more stable.   All these ingredients help calm irritation, restore hydration, and build resilience over time.   A few of our favourites for sensitive skin: Pevonia Sensitive Skin Cleanser Packed with chamomile and other soothing botanicals, this natural cleanser specifically designed to gently cleanse sensitive skin, is both calming and comforting. It’s non-irritating formula effectively removes impurities, excess oil, and makeup without stripping the skin or disrupting its barrier. The best enzyme exfoliant for sensitive skin: Real reviews

by Jo Boyden on Mar 25 2026
If you have sensitive skin, the word “exfoliation” can be terrifying, we know! You’ve probably tried a few exfoliators before, only to be left with skin that feels tight, irritated, or worse… inflamed. The truth is, many traditional exfoliators can be far too harsh for delicate skin. But there is good news! There are gentler options out there, we promise! Enzyme exfoliators are specifically designed to work with sensitive skin, not against it. They deliver all the glow-boosting, skin-smoothing benefits of exfoliation, without the irritation, and once you find the right one, you’ll wonder how you ever lived without it (because let’s be honest, exfoliation is a non-negotiable for healthy skin!). Keep reading to discover the enzyme exfoliator BC customers can’t get enough of.   Firstly though, let’s discuss why exfoliation matters (even for sensitive skin) Exfoliation is one of those steps that can make the biggest difference to your skin, but only when it’s done right, especially if you’re on the sensitive side. It helps remove the build-up of dead skin cells that can leave your complexion looking dull, uneven and a little lacklustre. More importantly, it allows your serums and moisturisers to actually do their job properly. But when you have sensitive skin, the type of exfoliation you use makes all the difference. The key is choosing a gentle approach that smooths and brightens without disrupting your skin barrier!   The different types of exfoliators (and why some won’t suit your sensitive skin) Before we get into the enzyme exfoliator that BC customers (and our team!) absolutely love and why it’s perfect for sensitive, reactive or rosacea-prone skin, it’s helpful to quickly understand the three different types of exfoliators. Because while they all aim to do the same thing, they work in very different ways. Physical exfoliants These use grains, beads or brushes to manually buff away dead skin cells. They can work, and they can feel satisfying! But on sensitive or rosacea‑prone skin they often cause micro‑tears, redness and a disrupted skin barrier. Chemical exfoliants (acids) These exfoliators dissolve the “glue” that holds dead skin cells together by using active ingredients like AHAs, BHAs and PHAs (think glycolic, lactic, salicylic, etc.) They’re brilliant for many skin types but can be too strong for easily irritated skin, especially at higher strengths or with over-exfoliation. Enzymatic exfoliants (the gentle alternative and why they are perfect for sensitive skin) Often the safest and most effective option (they deliver glowing results without irritation), these exfoliators enzymes (usually from fruits or plants) to gently break down the bonds between dead skin cells on the surface, so they can be whisked away without friction or harshness leaving the fresh, healthy ones alone. No scrubbing, no burning, no barrier damage! Just a softer, brighter, smoother and calming complexion!   Why enzyme exfoliants are so good for sensitive skin Enzyme exfoliants have a few major advantages if your skin is easily inflamed! No harsh scrubbing Because enzymes do the work, you don’t need gritty particles or intense rubbing. Less friction = less redness and irritation. Phew! Gentler action at the surface Enzymes mostly work on that top layer of built‑up dead cells, rather than penetrating aggressively, which can feel far more comfortable for reactive skin. Smoother texture, better glow By loosening dull, dead skin, they help reveal a brighter, more even complexion, and they also help your serums and moisturisers absorb more effectively. Great “bridge” for those scared of acids If acids freak your skin out or you’re just nervous to try them, an enzyme exfoliant can give you many of the same benefits, but in a more forgiving, spa‑like way. The key, of course, is choosing an enzyme formula that’s actually designed with sensitive skin in mind… which brings us to the one we and the BC customers can’t get enough!   Phytomer Vegetal Exfoliant with Natural Enzymes Phytomer’s global best-selling exfoliator is the ultimate for all skin types and an essential for turning dull skin to dewy in minutes! It’s gentle, enzyme-based and effectively lifts dead skin cells without any friction, making it ideal even for sensitive skin. It really wont trigger redness or inflammation in the way many traditional exfoliators can. Instead, papaya enzymes work with your skin, helping to smooth texture, brighten dullness, and improve overall clarity while keeping everything calm and balanced. Over time, you’ll also notice your skincare working better too! Serums absorb more effectively, hydration levels improve, and your skin just looks… healthier. It’s the kind of exfoliation that feels almost effortless, yet the results are instantly noticeable. It’s outstanding stuff!   Don’t just take my word for it though, this is what just a few of our customers think too!  “I have the most sensitive skin, so I can't use those exfoliants that contain microbeads or scrubs...this is a great alternative. It sloughs off all of the dead skin cells without ever irritating my skin! I use it once a week at the minimum, and it keeps my face glowing and smooth. It's the most wonderful exfoliant ever!” - Sarah R “Love this Vegetal Exfoliant, after using it twice a week I notice more clear skin without irritation or redness. I have very sensitive skin and are wary of exfoliants since most of them have chemical ingredients. No redness but fresh looking skin. My favourite exfoliant now.” – Phoenix   “I have been using this product for over ten years because of my very sensitive skin. It isn’t gritty, which keeps my skin from getting irritated, and it very gently removes dead dull skin. Always leaves my skin glowing and even toned with no redness or irritation. I usually follow with Phytomer’s deeply hydrating Hydracontinue mask and it is like having baby skin again. Highly recommend!” – Laura K   If you’ve been hesitant to exfoliate because of sensitivity, this is the product that can completely change your mind. Remember exfoliation is an essential skincare step for everyone but choosing the right one can make all the difference to the health of your skin.

Makeup for sensitive skin: What works and what to avoid

by Jo Boyden on Mar 20 2026
You’ve finally found a foundation that sounds perfect! The coverage is gorgeous, the finish is flawless, but minutes after first applying it, your skin is itching, burning, or turning bright red. Sound like something you’ve experienced? The truth is a lot of everyday makeup is packed with ingredients that sensitive skin simply can’t tolerate. But that doesn’t mean you have to choose between a flawless finish and a calm complexion, and it certainly doesn't mean you have to skip makeup altogether (because let’s be honest, who would want to do that!) You just need to choose formulas that actually work with your skin, not against it. Keep reading to discover the products and ingredients you need to avoid, plus how to build a makeup routine your sensitive skin will genuinely love!   Firstly, what to avoid when it comes to sensitive skin Just as important as what you use, is what to avoid! When you have sensitive skin, your makeup should essentially be an extension of your skincare. If a product is sitting on your face for 8–10 hours a day, it needs to be "breathable" and free from the common irritants that trigger irritation. Firstly, make sure you steer clear of matte, heavy and full-coverage foundations, this is because they can sit on the skin and trap heat. Any makeup that is highly fragranced or is formulated with harsh or drying formulas that disrupt the skin barrier are a no no (so make sure you check the ingredients before buying! Nothing labelled with "parfum" or "fragrance, alcohol denat, isopropyl alcohol, or ethanol, and try to avoid talc‑heavy powders as they can be drying and aggravating. You’ll also want to avoid highly pigmented eye products as they are more likely to cause stinging or redness. And finally, while I preach about SPF all the time you need to be careful what sunscreen you are putting on your skin! Chemical filters work by absorbing UV rays and turning them into heat in the skin. For someone with rosacea or heat-sensitive skin, this extra heat can trigger a massive flush! So make sure if your foundation has SPF in it, it’s of the physical (mineral) kind like Zinc Oxide or Titanium Dioxide, which sit on top of the skin and reflect heat away! Remember sensitive skin doesn’t need more, it simply needs better, more considered formulas!   What your sensitive skin needs Whether you deal with rosacea, eczema, or just general sensitivity and reactivity, you want to keep things gentle, breathable and supportive of your skin barrier. Mineral-based formulas work wonders but make sure you look for additional hydrating and soothing ingredients too, like hyaluronic acid, glycerin, squalane, green tea, calendula or allantoin.   Why mineral makeup works so well if you have sensitive skin Mineral makeup is often a game-changer for those with reactive or easily irritated skin. This is because of a number of reasons including; It’s lightweight and breathable Mineral makeup is less likely to clog pores It’s so much gentler on the skin barrier It treats skin while you wear it (yes please) Many mineral foundations are buildable without ever looking heavy And finally mineral makeup enhances the complexion without overwhelming it And also when done well, it gives that beautiful “your skin, but better” finish that so many of us are looking for!   Your sensitive skin-friendly make routine If you’re looking to simplify your routine while keeping your skin calm and comfortable, here’s an easy, go-to approach using ELES mineral makeup.   Step 1: Start with a lightweight, skin-loving base A heavy foundation is often where things go wrong for sensitive skin. You want to conceal any redness, but your full coverage foundation can exacerbate any irritation! Instead, opt for something breathable and hydrating like the ELES Mineral Glow Skin Tint SPF 15. It’s one of my personal new absolute favourites, but more so it’s perfect for sensitive skin because it provides sheer, buildable coverage, it contains mineral SPF for gentle protection, it’s enriched with hyaluronic acid and squalane for hydration and it includes calming botanicals to help soothe and support the skin! What more can you ask? Oh and it evens out the complexion to perfection while still letting your natural skin shine through, no heaviness, no irritation just a subtle flawless glow – really! Step 2: Conceal only where you need it Rather than layering foundation everywhere, use a small amount of concealer just where needed. This helps avoid overloading the skin while still giving covering any blemishes to give you a polished finish. Less really is more here. Try the ELES Adjustable Coverage Concealer. It really is a dream for sensitive skin, delivering creamy, hydrating coverage that brightens and conceals redness and blemishes without caking or creasing. Enriched with soothing, nourishing ingredients, it softens, conditions, and protects while blending seamlessly for a natural, skin‑like finish. Comfortable, buildable, and beautifully gentle.  Step 3: Make sure you add soft, natural definition Sensitive skin often looks best with soft, natural makeup rather than anything too heavy or structured. Mineral-based blushes are ideal because they sit lightly on the skin, blend seamlessly and add colour without irritation. And I know you might be thinking no to blush when you are already dealing with facial redness but a soft flush of blush in the right place (apples of cheeks) can instantly bring life back to the complexion.  Step 4: Keep powder to a minimum Setting powder is where a lot of sensitive skin routines fall apart, heavy powders can feel suffocating and trigger congestion then can also be drying. Make sure you choose the right setting powder for your skin and apply just a small amount only where needed (usually the T-zone), this will keep your skin looking fresh and avoids that dry, tight feeling. The ELES Baked Finishing Powder is feather-light and sheer, taming shine and adding a soft radiance without sitting heavily on your skin. A light dusting is all you need to set your base and keep everything in place. Step 5: Finish with a few subtle touches Keeping the overall look fresh and minimal not only suits sensitive skin it also enhances your natural features beautifully. So to complete your look add a light coat of mascara to your lashes (for sensitive eyes the ELES Sensitive Eyes Mascara is great!) if you like to use eyeshadow for colour and definition stick with mineral shadows as they are clinically formulated for the fragile eye area, hypoallergenic, and sensitivity-tested, making them suitable for even the most sensitive skin! Softly define your blows and add a light touch of lippie that won't dry out or irritate. The ELES lip range is hydrating, fragrance-free, and comes in gorgeous wearable shades. Each lipstick delivers rich colour with a comfortable, non-drying formula, and the Pucker Up Lip Gloss gives you a plumping, high-shine finish that feels as good as it looks. Voila! Remember makeup for sensitive skin isn’t about giving up on coverage, glow or a polished look, it’s about working with your skin, not against it. With gentle, mineral-based formulas, hydrating ingredients and a lighter approach to application, you can achieve a beautiful, radiant finish while keeping your skin calm and happy (no burn, itch or redness flare-up in sight!)
The best rosacea skincare routine to calm redness fast

The best rosacea skincare routine to calm redness fast

by Jo Boyden on Mar 17 2026
Here’s the thing nobody tells you when you first realise you’re dealing with rosacea. Most mainstream skincare is quietly making it worse! The exfoliants, the strong acids, the heavily fragranced toners, they all sound amazing in theory, but for rosacea‑prone skin they can unfortunately turn a gentle flush into a full-blown flare-up! But having rosacea doesn’t mean you have to give up on great skin. It just means you need to be a little more intentional about what you put on it. Whether you're dealing with persistent redness, visible capillaries, or that frustrating flushing that seems to have a mind of its own! the right routine can make a huge difference. Keep reading as we reveal what actually works. A simple calming AM and PM routine built around ingredients your rosacea skin will genuinely love, and products we absolutely swear by too!   Firstly though, let's talk about what rosacea actually is! While to you it might not seem it, rosacea is in fact a very common skin condition. More common than most people realise. Unfortunately, its one that causes persistent redness, flushing and visible capillaries, most commonly across the cheeks, nose and chin. For some people it may also include sensitivity, dryness or occasional breakouts too! (bumps that sometimes get mistaken for acne which needs very different skincare altogether!) While rosacea sadly can’t be completely cured, the right skincare routine can (and will!) make a noticeable difference by helping to calm inflammation, strengthen the skin barrier and keep symptoms at bay. The golden rules? Keep it gentle, keep it simple, and avoid anything that triggers inflammation. That means no harsh scrubs (enzyme exfoliators are ok), no alcohol-based toners, no fragrance, and definitely no aggressive acids! Your skin barrier is everything when you have rosacea so barrier supporting skincare formulated with inflammatory ingredients is essential! And never skip your sunscreen! UV exposure is one of the biggest rosacea triggers and using a good sunscreen prevents flare‑ups, redness, and long‑term sensitivity.   The products you need When you have rosacea, your skin barrier is essentially on high alert. To bring it back to a state of peace, we need to focus on cooling, calming, and capillary-strengthening. Dermatologists, BC customers and the BC team alike, can’t get enough of the Pevonia RS2 Rosacea Care range. The collection has been specifically formulated to calm redness, reduce irritation and support sensitive, rosacea-prone skin.   The Star ingredients There is a reason this range is so good and that is because of the ingredients it’s been formulated with! Green tea and chamomile soothe and calm the skin while licorice and rose actively support capillary health! Then you have your squalane and glycerin to strengthen the skin barrier with vitamin E for antioxidant protection.   Morning Rosacea Skincare Routine (AM) Your morning goal is to create a "shield" against the triggers you'll face during the day.   Step 1: The gentle cleanse You’ll want to start your morning routine with a mild, soothing cleanser that removes impurities without stripping the skin. The Pevonia RS2 Gentle Cleanser is incredibly mild, creamy and cooling and was specifically designed for sensitive and rosacea-prone skin. It cleanses without disrupting the skin barrier and instead helps calm visible redness. Simply apply a small amount over your face and neck with wet fingertips, work it in gently (no rubbing or scrubbing, ever!), and remove with fingers or a soft washcloth dampened with warm (never hot! water. Hot water is a big rosacea trigger, so keep it lukewarm. Step 2: It’s time to tone! This is your toner step, and the RS2 Gentle Lotion is nothing like the harsh, alcohol-drenched toners we used to use back in the day! This one is completely alcohol-free and packed with french rose, chamomile, green tea, and licorice. It removes tap water impurities (yes, that's a thing! And it massively matters for sensitive skin), balances your skin's pH, and preps your skin perfectly for your serum and moisturiser. Moisten a cotton pad and smooth it gently over your face and neck. You’ll notice how it gentle calms your skin! Step 3: The soothing serum This is where a dedicated rosacea line really shines! Now it’s time for a soothing serum and the Pevonia RS2 Concentrate does not disappoint. It’s lightweight but powerful, is packed with calming ingredients that help cool, calm, nourish and reduce redness, all while improving the skin’s resilience. It works to support fragile capillaries and address the redness and microcirculation issues that sit at the heart of rosacea. All you need to do is apply a small amount (one or two pumps is sufficient) and gently press into the skin. Step 4: Hydration Hydration is incredibly important for rosacea-prone skin because a compromised skin barrier often leads to increased sensitivity. You’ll want to seal in everything with the Pevonia RS2 Care Cream. This gorgeous, soothing moisturiser formulated with rose, green tea, licorice, and chamomile delivers deep hydration while helping calm redness and support the skin barrier. Its soothing formulation helps the skin feel comfortable and balanced throughout the day. Massage it gently over your face and neck until fully absorbed. Step 5: Daily Sun Protection (the non-negotiable!) Sun exposure is one of the biggest rosacea triggers there is, so SPF every single morning is non-negotiable, rain, hail, or shine. Choose a gentle mineral SPF (zinc oxide or titanium dioxide) rather than chemical SPF, as mineral formulas tend to be much kinder to reactive skin, and apply it every morning as the final step in your AM routine. We love the Hubislab Herb 8 Soothing Blemish Balm SPF30 PA++. Formulated with Zinc Oxide, SPF30 broad-spectrum filters, and Hubislab’s signature Anti Toxin Herb 8 complex, it works to soothe irritation, support skin recovery, and strengthen the skin barrier. A tinted mineral SPF is a brilliant option because it gives you a little coverage while also neutralising redness, two birds, one stone as they say!   Evening Rosacea Skincare Routine (PM) Your evening routine follows the same first four steps, and yes, that's intentional. Consistency is key with rosacea, and your skin doesn't need a complicated ten-step evening routine. It needs calm, nourishing, and reliable. Step 1: Cleanse Even if you haven't worn makeup, cleansing at night removes pollution, sunscreen, and the general grime of the day. Same technique as the morning, be gentle (rather than scrubbing the skin), and use lukewarm water! Step 2: Lotion Again, use your RS2 Gentle Lotion to balance and prep.  Step 3: Apply the RS2 Concentrate Nighttime is when your skin does its best repair work, and the Pevonia RS2 Concentrate supports that process beautifully. It cools, calms, and works on reducing redness and capillary congestion while you sleep. Don't skip this step! It really is essential and when used consistently, this step helps strengthen rosacea-prone skin over time. Step 4: Nourish with RS2 Rosacea Care Cream Finish your PM routine with your Pevonia RS2 Care Cream to replenish hydration, lock in moisture and give your skin barrier everything it needs to repair overnight. You’ll wake up to skin that feels calm, plump, and noticeably less reactive (really!)   And another step…Weekly soothing mask If your skin is particularly reactive or experiencing a flare-up, adding a soothing mask once or twice a week can be incredibly helpful. If you love cream masks we highly recommend the Phytomer Accept Comfort Mask. It’s a soothing, anti-inflammatory cream mask that calms redness and restores comfort to ultra-sensitive skin. Or for a quick soothing fix you can also try a good sheet mask. We love the Hubislab e+ Epiderma Nova Cell Soothing Mask 5  it delivers intensive soothing and restorative care for stressed, irritated, sensitive or damaged skin. Extra pro tips Alongside a gentle routine, a few lifestyle habits can also help keep your rosacea under control. These include; • Avoid extremely hot water when cleansing (as already mentioned) • Limit harsh exfoliants or strong acids (for exfoliation use an enzyme exfoliant)• Protect skin from sun exposure every single day!• Manage known triggers like spicy foods or alcohol (best to steer clear where possible)• Keep your skincare routine consistent!   Rosacea-prone skin requires a little extra care, but with the right products and a gentle routine, it’s absolutely possible to keep redness and sensitivity under control. The Pevonia RS2 Rosacea Care range was created specifically to support delicate, reactive skin, helping to calm irritation while strengthening the skin barrier over time. What’s more from now until April, when you purchase a Pevonia RS2 Rosacea Cream, you’ll receive an RS2 Rosacea Cleanser 50ml and Lotion 50ml for FREE

Is your makeup ageing you? 10 reasons to update your routine

by Jo Boyden on Mar 13 2026
I’m sure we all have our go-to makeup products. That beloved blush, the lipstick shade we’ve worn for years and of course the trusty foundation we can’t get enough of because once upon a time someone told us it made our skin look fabulous (and for a long time, it probably did!) But makeup formulations have evolved, ingredients are smarter and more importantly, our skin changes as we age. What worked beautifully at 30 can subtly start working against you at 40, 50 and beyond and by way of working against you I mean it could be adding years to your face instead of that fresh, youthful glow we all so desire! The good news? You don’t need a completely new makeup bag! A few simple updates to your products and application can make a surprisingly big difference. Keep reading for 8 signs your makeup might be ageing you and the simple changes that can instantly refresh your look!   1. You’re skipping on skin prep Makeup can only sit as well as the skin underneath! That’s why prepping your skin before applying makeup is essential.  Dehydrated, rough, or sensitised skin can make even expensive products look patchy, heavy or uneven! Commit to a simple, consistent skincare routine with gentle cleansing, hydrating serums and barrier-supporting moisture. Exfoliating a few times a week is a good way to keep texture smooth and consider using a good primer. Primers hydrate and smooth texture, preventing foundation from settling into fine lines and keeping your youthful, dewy glow locked in all day. 2. Your foundation is too heavy Full-coverage foundations were once the go-to for creating a flawless finish. But heavier formulas can sometimes sit on top of the skin, emphasising texture, fine lines and enlarged pores. Instead, consider switching to lighter, more flexible formulas like skin tints, hydrating foundations or serum bases. These allow your natural skin to show through while still evening out tone and softening imperfections.  3. You’re overloading on foundation powder If you’re not one for liquid or stick foundations you’ve probably been using your faithful powder compact for a while. Face powder, when used correctly and frugally can be a fantastic makeup staple (I have been I’m in love with the ELES Mineral Powder Foundation for years!) however, no matter your skin type, too much face powder can actually age you! That’s right, it can highlight fine lines and wrinkles instead of helping to conceal them! Now I’m not saying you have to totally forgo your trusty powder foundation compact, but it’s best to use powder sparingly (on your t-zone, or for quick touch-up’s), or better still make sure you opt for a mineral powder! it offers lightweight, breathable coverage that does not settle into fine lines or wrinkles (avoiding that cakey, ageing appearance) instead it provides a soft-focus, radiant finish that blurs imperfections, while its non-comedogenic formula won't irritate skin that becomes more sensitive with age. 4. You’re using the wrong tone of foundation Many foundations come in both warm and cool tones but remember for many of us cool tones can exacerbate signs of age! This is because they often have blue, pink, or ashy undertones, which can accentuate fine lines, wrinkles, and uneven skin texture. As skin ages, it tends to lose its natural warmth and radiance, so using a foundation with cool tones can make the complexion appear dull, flat, or even greyish too! Which in turn can also highlight dark circles or any sallowness in the skin. All you need to do is check the colour of your foundation and try to find one with a warmer tone that matches your complexion. This will help counteract complexion pinkness that comes with thinning of the skin and exposure of fine capillaries. Warmer tones also conceal shadows better which means you need less concealer.   5. Using the wrong concealer or concealer shade As we mature and our face loses its youthful “plumpness”, shadow start to really appear under our eyes, around the nose, and at the corners of our mouth. It’s tempting to reach for a heavy duty, ultra-light shade concealer to hide these dark areas. The problem is that they can make the dark shadows look grey as opposed to concealing them or worse still settle into fine lines, especially under the eyes, accentuating them! Instead look for peachy toned, lightweight concealers that won’t cake on the skin and counteract the blue in the shadows. We recommend ELES Dual Action Concealer, it acts like 8 hours of sleep in a tube! We love it! 6. Your eyebrows are too harsh Brows have the ability to frame our eyes and lift our face! But overly dark or sharply defined brows can look heavy and ageing! (what were we thinking in the 80’s when we over-tweezed only to find that our brows never grew back!) Simply make sure you are using a softer brow pencil (taupe colour brow products can be better instead of warm browns) and use lighter strokes to create the illusion of real hair. The goal is to create natural looking thicker brows (like the ones we used to have!) Just be sure you don’t overfill the front part of your brow though! This area should have soft hair that graduates into more density. We recommend using the ELES Precision Brow Pencil. The soft, fine pencil allows you to perfectly line and fill your brows and the formula lasts for us to 10 hours! It’s amazing. 7. Your blush is pulling your face down Placing blush too low on the cheeks can drag your face down visually and emphasise loss of volume! Eek. If you are guilty of this just make sure you apply blush slightly higher on the cheek, blending upwards towards the temples for lift. Also choose cream or baked blushes as power blush can be too heavy and opt for shades like soft peaches, rose or coral over the brown hues. Remember well-placed colour can instantly make the face look more lifted and alive!   8. Your eye makeup is all wrong Solid black liner all the way around the eyes, thick lower-lash liner, or very shimmery shadow in the crease can make eyes look smaller, more tired and older. I love a good eyeliner so I’m not saying don’t use it! But consider swapping your black liner for deep brown, plum or charcoal for softer definition. Focus your liner on the upper lash line, with a subtle flick for lift (it really does work!) try using a waterliner and apply to the inner rim of your lower lash line. By doing so it’ll immediately open up your eyes as well as make the whites of your eyes look whiter. It works a treat! And use mostly matte or satin shadows for structure (in neutral shades), keeping shimmer purely to the lid or inner corner. Remember you want to frame the eyes, not close them in. If you have hooded or droopy eyes here are some top tips to improve them naturally. 9. You are continuing to use that cold frosted lipstick you love As we age, similar to our skin, our lips start to lose volume and in turn fine lines start to form! Unfortunately, that frosted lip colour that we once loved (and looked good) no longer does! This is because frosted lip colours enhance these lines making your lips age you even more! Instead of that frosted favourite, opt for a cream or satin lipstick that will make your lips look fuller and smoother. Many of these contain moisturising molecules that plump the lips and keep them hydrated longer. 10. Going to bed with makeup on Well here's one you've heard many a time before! Right? From a few too many wines to being just plain old exhausted, sometimes it hard to peel yourself off your bed to go and remove your makeup but remove your makeup you must! Cleansing your face especially at night to remove not only your makeup but any remnants of the days sweat, dirt and grime is imperative for healthy skin. Not removing your makeup means your skin is unable to regenerate effectively while you sleep, pores clog, blemishes form and fatigue (ageing!) signs start to appear. Makeup can also trap dirt and pollution, which leads to oxidative stress damaging your skin and breaking down collagen, the protein that keeps your skin firm and smooth! So, no matter how tired you are, make cleansing a non-negotiable part of your nighttime routine. Use a gentle cleanser or micellar water to remove makeup and grime, giving your skin a chance to breathe and repair while you sleep. For a fantastic makeup remover which effectively melts away makeup and grime with minimum effort try Phytomer's Doux Contour Eye and Lip Waterproof Makeup Remover. Combining the effectiveness of an oil (a trio of oils in fact) and the gentleness of a lotion, this ultra-hydrating makeup remover, eradicates even the most stubborn of lips and eye makeup fast! And today’s best formulas focus on hydration, light-reflecting textures and breathable coverage that move naturally with the skin. When your makeup routine evolves with your complexion, the result is skin that looks fresh, radiant and beautifully effortless! So if your makeup suddenly feels like it isn’t working quite the way it used to, don’t panic. It may simply be time for a few small updates.

The best tinted sunscreen for a natural, no-makeup look

by Jo Boyden on Mar 10 2026
Who doesn’t love makeup? Especially on those days when our skin is feeling a little meh and a good foundation can feel like a total saving grace. But sometimes we just don’t feel like wearing a full face, or the foundation we love can feel like a little too much! Cue tinted sunscreen or skin tint foundation (with SPF!) These clever multi-taskers blur imperfections, add a healthy, natural glow and protect skin in one simple step! Exactly what the new ELES Mineral Glow Skin Tint SPF 15 was designed to do! If you haven’t heard of it yet, consider this your official introduction to what could be your new makeup favourite (it certainly is now mine!) It’s not quite a foundation, and it’s far more than just a tinted moisturiser. Instead, it’s a mineral-infused skin tint created for those days when you want your skin to look like your skin, just a much more rested, radiant and flawless version!   Firstly though, why choose a tinted foundation with SPF you might be asking? We all know we should be wearing sunscreen every single day, but the routine of layering moisturiser, SPF, and then makeup can sometimes feel like a lot especially if you are time poor! A tinted sunscreen or tint with SPF changes the game completely. You're streamlining your morning routine, protecting your skin, and still walking out the door looking fresh, polished and glowy. It's the ultimate beauty multi-tasker!   Why we love the ELES Mineral Glow Skin Tint SPF 15 Beyond its everyday mineral SPF 15 protection, the first thing you’ll notice about the ELES Mineral Glow Skin Tint is the texture! It’s lightweight and silky and glides on like a dream. It doesn't "mask" your face, instead, it blurs imperfections and softens the look of pores while letting your real skin shine through. It also has the most gorgeous subtle uplifting citrus scent too thanks to its blend of blood orange, grapefruit, lime and lemon essential oils, which makes applying it feel like a little morning mood boost. What really sets this tinted sunscreen apart however, is how many skincare ingredients are built into the formula! A blend of botanical extracts including pomegranate, sea buckthorn, kiwi seed and cucumber helps revitalise and brighten the skin, while antioxidant ingredients help defend against environmental stress. Meanwhile calming extracts like green tea and marigold help soothe and support the skin barrier, while hyaluronic acid delivers long-lasting hydration and plumping benefits. The result is makeup that doesn’t just look good, it actually helps support healthier skin. Why it’s perfect for no‑makeup makeup days 1. Sheer, buildable coverage that still looks like skin No‑makeup makeup is all about restraint. You want enough coverage to feel confident, but not so much that it looks like a full base! The Mineral Glow Skin Tint provides light‑medium when you build it up where you need it (around the nose, a bit on the chin, over redness) and you can easily apply it with fingers or a sponge, blend it in like a moisturiser, and be done. It’s that easy! 2. Hydration and glow in one step Dry, tired skin is the fastest way to ruin a no‑makeup makeup look. This tint is packed with skin‑loving and skin plumping hydrators including squalane, glycerin and of course hyaluronic acid so your glow isn’t just from pigment, it’s from genuine hydration. The result? Skin that looks fresh and naturally dewy, not flat or powdery! 3. Calming, soothing and kind to sensitive skin If your skin flares up, flushes easily or just doesn’t like heavy formulas, this is a very gentle option. It’s been formulated for all skin types, including sensitive or easily irritated. The green tea and marigold extracts in the formulation help soothe redness and protect against environmental stress which allantoin helps comfort and support compromised or reactive skin 4. Mineral SPF 15 built in As mentioned, sun protection is non‑negotiable, even on rainy, cloudy or in the office all day, days! Titanium dioxide provides gentle mineral SPF 15 protection which is ideal for sensitive or easily irritated skin. 5. Antioxidant glow from botanicals This isn’t just a tint with SPF, it’s skincare with serious antioxidant support! Ingredients like pomegranate and sea buckthorn help brighten, nourish and support more radiant, even toned skin while the kiwi seed and cucumber refresh, soothe and de‑puff tired, dull complexions. Worn daily, you’re not only faking good skin, you’re gradually supporting it to look better bare as well! To use it Simply apply after your morning skincare (and sunscreen if you're in high UV! Remember, SPF 15 is a great everyday shield, but you may want a higher SPF on beach days). Use your fingertips for the most natural finish, a brush for more coverage, or a damp sponge for that seamless, skin-like look. One layer gives you that effortless 'my skin but better' finish. Build it up on areas you want a little more coverage (around the nose, any redness, blemishes) and you've got a look that's polished without being heavy. It also works beautifully for professional application, so if you're a therapist or makeup artist, this one's a brilliant addition to your kit! Add a touch of concealer, a little mascara and lip balm and your fresh, glowing everyday “no-makeup, makeup” look is complete!   If you are over foundations that appear to settle into your fine lines, your skin feels dull and dehydrated, or perhaps it’s on the more sensitive side? Or maybe you are looking for a makeup base that acts like skincare packed with the latest and greatest ingredients, you’ll love ELES Mineral Glow Skin Tint SPF 15 And if you’ve ever wished your sunscreen looked more like your favourite foundation and your foundation behaved more like skincare, this one is for you!
