Everyday makeup: The simple 5-minute makeup routine

Everyday makeup: The simple 5-minute makeup routine

by Jo Boyden on Jun 13 2025
Let’s face it, life’s busy and mornings can be hectic (that’s every day in my house!) which means the luxury of spending ample time in front of the mirror to master your makeup daily is likely non-existent! Between hitting snooze one too many times and juggling the morning chaos, it can be a miracle to leave the house looking like we didn’t just roll out of bed! The good news? I’m here to tell you that with just 5 or 6 key products and a few simple steps, you can actually master a polished, fresh-faced glow in just minutes! Sound good? Keep reading for the easy to follow 5-minute makeup routine us busy mums at BC love and use every day!   What you’ll need; Tinted Moisturiser, BB Cream, or Lightweight Foundation (with SPF if possible!) Concealer (for under eyes and any blemishes) Brow Gel or Pencil Mascara Baked or Cream Blush Lip Gloss Beauty sponge (optional)   Step 1: Prep your skin (1 minute) Make sure you start with a clean, moisturised face (a hydrating night cream or face oil applied the night before helps cut time here!) Use a lightweight moisturiser or a hydrating primer to create a smooth canvas. This step helps your makeup go on evenly and last longer. Applying a sunscreen after is imperative too to protect your skin throughout the day, if your moisturiser already has SPF in it, even better! Step 2: Even out your complexion (1.5 minutes) Skip heavy foundations and instead opt for a tinted moisturiser, BB cream or light powder for quick coverage. Apply it with your fingers or a damp beauty sponge for a natural finish. Focus on areas that need coverage, like redness or uneven tone, and blend well for a seamless look. If you want, add a quick dusting of translucent powder on your T-zone to control shine. Step 3: Add a touch of colour (30 seconds) Now apply a sweep of blush across your cheeks for a fresh, youthful glow. Cream formulas are perfect for quick application and blend easily with your fingers. Choose a shade that complements your skin tone for a natural flush. Step 4: Conceal and brighten (45 seconds) Gently apply a lightweight concealer under your eyes, around your nose, and on any blemishes, gently tapping it in with your ring finger or a small brush. You can also use a sponge for a natural, flawless finish. Next quickly define your eyes by applying one or two coats of mascara. This step will instantly brighten your complexion and enhance and lift your lashes opening your eyes to make you look more awake! And I’m sure many of us want to do with that in the morning! Step 5: Define your brows (45 seconds) Fill in your brows lightly with a brow pencil and brush through for a natural look. I know we don’t have much time, but this step will make all the difference to your look! Defined brows will really frame your face and can make you look younger than you are!  Step 6: Finish with lips (30 seconds) To complete the look, finish with a swipe of hydrating lip balm, gloss, or your favourite lipstick. Choose a shade that enhances your natural lip colour for an effortless finish. I love using my favourite ELES Gel Lipliner in Guava! I line my lips to make them look fuller and more plumped (because let’s face it ageing definitely thins them!) and then fill lips in for colour!   Bonus tips for speedy success! Multi-tasking products will save you time! We love a good BB Cream with SPF which acts as your moisturiser, foundation and sunscreen! Use your fingers for application, they’re the quickest tools you have! Stick to cream or liquid formulas for easier blending. Organize your makeup and place in one location for grab-and-go mornings. Good luck!
This self-care ritual will transform your skin and psyche

This self-care ritual will transform your skin and psyche

by Jo Boyden on Apr 24 2025
Feeling stressed? In desperate need of some time out but you’re simply too time poor? We know that feeling all too well. But we are here to tell you that something as simple as a quiet evening, a few luxurious beauty products, and some well-deserved “you” time can make a big difference to your mental wellbeing. So, dim the lights, queue up your favourite calming playlist, and get ready to unwind with this indulgent beauty ritual your skin (and psyche) will love.   Step 1: Set the mood Setting the mood for any self-care ritual is essential because it helps shift your mindset from daily stress and distractions to a state of calm. When you create a soothing environment (think soft lighting, soothing sounds, calming scented candles or burning essential oils) you signal to your brain that it’s time to relax, recharge, and focus inward. This sensory shift not only enhances your overall experience but also allows your body and mind to fully benefit from the ritual.   Step 2: Start your ritual with a replenishing face mask Of course you’ll need to cleanse your skin first, but a face mask is the perfect opportunity to pause, breathe and treat your skin to something special! It’s a great way to not only address our skin's needs but also make us feel amazing in little to no time! This is because a face mask can lift your spirit by stimulating your senses and allow you a moment (or few moments should I say!) of indulgent comfort. Ahhhhh. It really is the ultimate way to reset tired, dehydrated or stressed skin. For the perfect mask for your skin click here. Or if it’s a sheet mask you love, we can highly recommend those too!   Step 3: Now it’s time to indulge in a therapeutic bubble bath Who doesn’t love a bubble bath? Such a simple yet indulgent way to totally unwind and enjoy a little “you time”. Now wearing your mask (or not if you’ve chosen to already remove it!) simply slide into a bath infused with aromatic salts or essential oils for the ultimate relaxation. Remember this is your well-deserved time to let go of the day and totally unwind for those few minutes (or longer if you have!) Self-Care Tip: Add a few drops of marine bath salts and let the steam open your pores—prepping your skin for what’s to come. Phytomer’s Oligomer Well-being Sensation Essential Minerals Relaxing Bath really is the ultimate mineral bath. This amazing lightly foaming product is enriched with OLIGOMER® - a partially sodium-reduced seawater concentrate that contains all of the remineralizing properties of seawater –to strengthen and restore the skin and release all pent-up tension. Its gorgeous Green Tea and Jasmine fragrance is also diffused throughout the duration of your bath leaving a trail of freshness and lightness on your skin. Bliss. Step 4: Elevate your routine with a facial massage Once you’re out of the bath and your mask has worked its magic, it’s time to lock in all that goodness with a nourishing facial oil or cream and a facial massage! We love Pevonia Aromatic Oil. With all the benefits of 4 mood enhancing essential oils – lavender, grapefruit, chamomile and rose, combined with squalane and vitamin e, this soothing and indulgent face oil combats dehydration and dryness while soothing, calming and brightening skin. It also promotes an immediate feeling of increased wellbeing and total relaxation from the moment you apply it! Heaven. How to:Use your fingers or a facial roller to gently massage the oil into your skin using upward strokes. Not only does this boost circulation and lymphatic drainage, but it’s also deeply relaxing (and so good for softening fine lines!). We love gemstone facial rollers. These little massage beauty’s (also touted as an “anti-ageing tool”) offer a multitude of benefits for the skin (and mindset) when used regularly and correctly. They can help fight wrinkles, stimulate collagen production, tighten skin and pores, increase blood circulation to the face, clear toxins, decrease puffiness under the eyes and around the face, and potentially improve inflammatory skin conditions too! Oh, and they even have the ability to release tension! (And did I mention are soo soothing and calming on the skin.) Unfortunately, there is no one size fits all though, with a range of gemstone options, it’s important to look at their individual properties and benefits to find which one will work best for you! To find out more about their benefits as well as how to incorporate them into your daily skincare routine click there. For a detailed account of how to achieve a salon-style facial at home click here.  Step 5: Seal it with moisture Finish with a velvety moisturiser that will cocoon your skin in lasting hydration throughout the night! Try Phytomer Night Recharge Youth Enhancing Cream - Skin cells do their greatest renewal and repair whilst we sleep, so applying much needed hydration at night is encouraged to maximise absorption and enhance your skin barrier. I personally LOVE Phytomer’s Night Recharge Youth Enhancing Cream and use it religiously because my skin demands that extra layer of rich fluffy moisturiser. The cream literally cocoons my skin in nourishing hydration and really does restore youthful vitality by morning. Step 6. Don’t forget your body! Now it’s time to focus on your body with a gorgeous moisturising body cream like Oleocreme Ultra Moisturizing Body Milk. It’s a melt-away body moisturiser which intensely nourishes the skin while bathing it in a therapeutic seaside scent (lush) and It’s creamy, velvety texture literally envelopes skin treating it to all the benefits of the sea!   Step 7: Finish with a little foot care loving When my feet are feeling fatigued (which is often these days) there is nothing better than a pampering foot massage with Pevonia’s Tension Relief Gel. This cooling and uplifting, anti-inflammatory foot treatment literally alleviates tension and heaviness in an instant! And if my legs are sore and achy massaging Phytomer’s Cryotonic Soothing Leg Gel is a must too!
Rosacea Relief: Expert tips and products to calm and treat skin

Rosacea Relief: Expert tips and products to calm and treat skin

by Jo Boyden on Apr 11 2025
If you have rosacea, you’ll know how unpredictable it can be, one day your skin will feel calm, the next irritation can totally take over! The thing is while rosacea can’t be cured per se, there are things you can do to keep your symptoms at bay. Whether you’re dealing with persistent redness, facial flare-ups, pesky pimples or discomfort, we’ve gathered expert-approved tips and product recommendations to help you soothe and protect your sensitive skin.   Firstly, exactly what is rosacea, and do you have this skincare condition? Rosacea is a chronic and progressive, micro-circulation disorder visibly resulting in persistent redness, dilated capillaries, congestion, and last but not least, papules and pustules (breakouts!), so if you have suffered/are suffering from spells of facial flushing and blushing presenting skin redness, pimples, dilated capillaries and sometimes a burning sensation it’s likely you do have rosacea.   What are the most common rosacea triggers? It’s important to understand what your triggers are when it comes to your flare ups. Rosacea-prone skin is highly reactive, meaning it responds aggressively to environmental triggers, harsh ingredients, and even stress. The most common rosacea triggers include sun exposure, extreme temperatures, spicy foods, hot drinks like coffee and tea, alcohol, certain skincare ingredients, hormonal changes and unfortunately stress! Because the skin barrier is often compromised, it’s crucial to strengthen and protect it with gentle, nourishing formulas.   How to treat rosacea 1. You’ll want to choose gentle, fragrance-free skincare When it comes to rosacea, less is more. Make sure you avoid (at all costs!) harsh cleansers, alcohol-based toners, and heavily fragranced products, as these can worsen irritation. Instead, opt for a gentle, hydrating cleanser a soothing serum and calming, non-comedogenic moisturiser with barrier-strengthening ingredients to lock in moisture. Products designed specifically for rosacea skin will be best. 2. Protect your skin with SPF daily Sun exposure is one of the biggest triggers for rosacea flare-ups. A broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher is essential to prevent redness and irritation. Look for mineral-based sunscreens containing zinc oxide or titanium dioxide, as they are less likely to cause reactions. 3. Invest in soothing ingredients The ingredients in your skincare are imperative when it comes to treating rosacea. You’ll want to look out for skincare with ingredients that help calm inflammation and strengthen the skin barrier including; Aloe Vera – Hydrates and reduces redness Green Tea Extract – Rich in antioxidants that soothe irritation Centella Asiatica – Helps repair and strengthen sensitive skin Chamomile – Calms and soothes reactive skin French Rose – Anti-inflammatory and calming it soothes sensitive, rosacea prone skin 4. Avoid common irritants Unfortunately like with the common triggers (which you also need to avoid!), certain ingredients can exacerbate rosacea symptoms, so it’s best to steer clear of alcohol, synthetic fragrances, menthol, and exfoliants like glycolic acid. If you’re unsure about a product, do a patch test before applying it to your face first! 5. Stay consistent and be patient Rosacea can’t be cured, but with the right regimen, symptoms can be managed and flare-ups reduced. Avoid frequently switching products and give new routines time, results may take several weeks. 6. Last but not least when it comes to makeup go mineral! This is because mineral makeup is gentle, non-comedogenic, and free from irritants like fragrance and preservatives. Its natural, soothing ingredients help calm inflammation while offering breathable coverage that conceals redness without clogging pores or aggravating sensitive skin. Perfect for achieving a flawless finish with skin-loving benefits basically!   Best Products for Rosacea-Prone Skin We highly recommend the Pevonia Rosacea RS2 line! For more information on why it might be the perfection rosacea range for you click here. And to finish off your morning skincare routine and before you apply your makeup for rosacea skin you need to make sure you don’t skip on your sunscreen! Of course daily SPF is a necessity for everyone to protect skin against premature ageing and hyperpigmentation, but if you suffer from rosacea you’ll know that sun exposure is one of the biggest triggers for flare ups! UV rays can increase redness, inflammation, and sensitivity, making rosacea symptoms worse over time. A good sunscreen helps protect the skin’s barrier, preventing further irritation and reducing the risk of long-term damage. And we get it! If you have rosacea or sensitive skin, you might be a little reluctant to slather on sunscreen but Hubislab Herb 8 Soothing Blemish Balm SPF 30 PA++ is the ideal SPF! It soothes and regenerates sensitive skin while protecting skin against sun damage, premature skin ageing including dark spots, and other external factors. Its clever formulation of Zinc oxide, UVA and UVB protection and 8 herbal extracts also ensures the prevention of wrinkles and inflammation. Daily sun protection is one of the best ways to keep rosacea-prone skin calm, healthy, and happy.
How to treat adult acne: The skincare line that actually works

How to treat adult acne: The skincare line that actually works

by Jo Boyden on Jan 24 2025
Find yourself suddenly dealing with adult acne? The unexpected breakouts, stubborn spots, irritated skin? Believe me when I say you are not alone! Here at BC we get customers asking us why they might be suffering from acne in their 40’s and beyond all the time as well as the best solutions. Well, we can’t recommend enough a new (tried-and-tested by us) collection from Pevonia that tackles adult acne head-on while being kind to your skin! Whether your breakouts are stress-related, hormonal, or perhaps genetic, this routine will make a huge difference to your skin and your confidence! Cue Pevonia’s ProCorrective Line, a game-changing solution for tackling adult acne at its root!   Firstly, why are you suffering from adult acne? Adult acne can be incredibly frustrating, especially when you thought breakouts were a thing of the past! Unlike teenage breakouts though, adult acne often stems from a combination of factors from hormone changes to stress to genetics to pollution and more! Hormonal fluctuations often play a big part in adult acne though, whether it be during menstruation, pregnancy, perimenopause or menopause, this is because it can increase oil production leading to clogged pores which can trigger breakouts. Androgens, particularly testosterone, stimulate oil glands, worsening breakouts. These hormonal shifts also increase inflammation and disrupt the skin's barrier, making it more prone to bacterial overgrowth and persistent blemishes! Stress, which many of us adults can feel on a daily basis! Elevates cortisol levels, stimulating oil glands and worsening acne. And then there are the environmental factors like pollution or bacteria from touching your face which may clog pores, while certain skincare or makeup products can exacerbate the issue. Unfortunately what we eat and drink can also play a role, with high-glycemic foods and dairy potentially contributing! And then of course there are genetics (thanks parents!) and underlying medical conditions, such as hormonal imbalances or PCOS which can further increase the likelihood of adult acne. Eek!   Why Choose the Pevonia ProCorrective Line? Whatever your reason for suffering from adult acne, following a targeted skincare routine can make all the difference. And we might indeed be biased but Pevonia’s ProCorrective is one of the best targeted adult acne lines on the market especially when it comes to hormonal acne!
