Hormonal acne explained: Causes, tips and the best skincare

by Jo Boyden on May 22 2026
There’s nothing quite as frustrating as waking up, looking in the mirror, and seeing a blemish that has literally appeared out of nowhere overnight! Especially when you thought your breakout days were left behind in your teenage years! The thing is hormonal acne doesn’t just affect teenagers, it’s incredibly common in adulthood too, particularly in our late 30s, 40s and beyond. The tricky part is that hormonal acne is very different from a standard breakout, and because it can be so stubborn, it needs a more thoughtful approach than simply trying to “dry it out”. Instead, the key is to support the skin with gentle, targeted care that helps calm inflammation, protect the skin barrier and keep breakouts under control. Keep reading as we share the best professional skincare tips, ingredients, and expert-approved products to help keep stubborn hormonal breakouts at bay and your skin looking healthier, calmer, and more balanced!   How do you know it’s hormonal acne? Hormonal breakouts are often linked to changes in hormones that can affect oil production and inflammation in the skin. It commonly shows up as deep, tender spots, recurring breakouts or congestion that tends to cluster along the chin, jawline and lower cheeks, and occasionally the neck. This is distinctly different from congestion related acne which tends to appear across the T-zone (forehead, nose and chin.)  For many people, hormonal acne flares a week or so before a period, due to hormonal shifts. As oestrogen (the “female” hormone) levels drop, androgens (“male” hormones) have a relatively stronger effect on the skin often increasing oil production and congestion, which can lead to your skin breaking out. Hormonal acne also flares during other hormonal shifts such as stress, pregnancy, perimenopause and menopause!   The best skincare ingredients for hormonal acne The goal with hormonal acne is to keep the skin barrier strong and supported, target active breakouts and calm the inflammation that drives the redness and pain. Some of the most effective ingredients include: Salicylic & lactic acids to help clear pores and reduce congestion. Niacinamide to calm redness and balance oil Clay & charcoal to detoxify pores and absorb excess oil Hyaluronic acid for lightweight hydration Vitamin A and retinol alternatives to support skin renewal Soothing botanicals to reduce irritation   The best routine for hormonal acne Because hormonal acne tends to be deeper and more persistent than the occasional blemish, it often responds best to a routine that is both targeted and gentle. A simple routine is often the best place to start when treating hormonal acne. One of the biggest mistakes people make is over-cleansing or using harsh products that leave the skin feeling tight and dry. When the skin barrier becomes compromised, it can trigger even more oil production and irritation! Instead, it’s best to choose professional skincare that deeply cleanses without stripping the skin and focus on maintaining hydration and balance. Remember also that consistency is key, hormonal acne rarely improves overnight, but gentle, targeted skincare can help visibly improve the skin over time.   1. Choose a gentle, purifying cleanser You want to opt for a cleanser that removes excess oil, sunscreen and impurities while clearing out dead skin cells without stripping your skin and leaving your face feeling tight or dry. Remember over-cleansing can irritate the barrier and make breakouts feel worse. Our recommendation: Medicalia Clarifying Cleanser Specifically created for those with breakout prone and sensitive/oily skin, it’s formulated with both Salicylic and Lactic acids to gently but effectively unclog pores and soften skin while improving clarity! Its potent foaming suds work very quickly to eliminate surface bacteria, toxins, impurities and makeup while combatting inflammation too! “I’ve been using this cleanser for a year now. Keeps my sebaceous filaments in check and has helped control my hormonal acne better than any other cleanser I’ve used.” – Sophie H 2. Use targeted treatments that balance oil production This is where actives can be helpful. Specific ingredients can support clearer-looking skin while helping to calm inflammation. To tackle the stubborn hormonal acne you’re experiencing, look for a targeted serum that helps balance excess oil production, calm redness and irritation, and support the skin’s natural healing process without over-drying the skin. Our recommendation: Pevonia Soothing Propolis Concentrate This is one of BC’s best-selling serums and it’s a particular favourite for hormonal breakouts because of its extraordinary natural antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. Propolis is a resinous compound produced by bees that has been used medicinally for thousands of years and in skincare, it’s one of the most effective naturally derived antibacterial actives available. Applied to the skin, Propolis helps reduce the bacteria that colonise clogged pores and contribute to inflammatory breakouts. It calms redness and swelling around active spots, speeds up the skin’s healing process and helps prevent new breakouts from forming! Amazing right? And unlike harsh antiseptic actives, it does all of this without disrupting the skin barrier or causing dryness! Now you can see why it’s a Pevonia favourite. What makes it particularly useful for hormonal acne though is that it can be used as a preventative applied consistently during the week or two before your period when you know breakouts are likely, it helps minimise the severity of what appears and speeds up recovery when blemishes do develop. “I love this product, i bought it while i was pregnant and had severe hormonal acne and it seemed to calm and soothe my skin and reduced the "angriness" of my skin!” – Melinda I 4. Support skin healing & hydration It’s a myth that oily and acne prone skin doesn’t need nourishment! A common mistake people with acne make is skipping moisturiser because your skin feels oily. By doing so your skin will become dehydrated, go into panic mode and actually product more oil to compensate! You just need an oil-free, healing moisturiser. Our Recommendation: Medicalia Clarifying Cream This lightweight, fast absorbing clarifying moisturiser is ideal for hormonal acne-prone skin because it delivers hydration without feeling heavy, greasy, or pore-clogging. Formulated with salicylic and glycolic acids it helps calm congestion, rebalance excess oil, and support the skin barrier. It also works to keep skin feeling hydrated, soothed, and healthier-looking while helping reduce the appearance of redness and breakouts. What makes it especially great for hormonal acne is that it helps nourish and comfort stressed, inflamed skin without overloading it (something many richer creams can do!) The result? Skin feels more balanced, less irritated, and better supported overall, with a clearer, calmer-looking complexion over time. “it's expensive but it's been a lifesaver for my acne prone skin! I've noticed it helps keep my sebaceous filaments in check also.” – Sophie H 5. At night, use a “cell turnover” treatment Because hormonal acne is often linked to congestion, excess oil, and trapped dead skin cells, encouraging your skin to renew itself more effectively is essential. Overnight treatments that support healthy cell turnover can help keep pores clearer, improve skin texture, and reduce the appearance of persistent breakouts over time. Our recommendation: Medicalia Retinol & 'C' Care Retinol is considered the gold standard for acne-prone skin because it helps speed up cell turnover, keeping pores clearer and reducing congestion. Combined with Hyaluronic Acid, Ceramides and Vitamin C, it also helps to brighten the skin and fade the lingering red or brown post-breakout marks that blemishes often leave behind. 6. Don’t forget SPF Daily sun protection is essential, especially if you are using active ingredients that may make your skin more sensitive. A good SPF helps protect your skin while you work on improving its overall condition. Our recommendation: Hubislab Herb 8 Soothing Blemish Balm SPF30 PA++ - 50g Formulated with Zinc Oxide, SPF30 broad-spectrum filters, and Hubislab’s signature Anti Toxin Herb 8 complex, this soothing sunscreen designed for sensitive skin works to alleviate irritation, calm redness, support skin recovery, and strengthen the skin barrier! It’s your SPF and skin treatment in one! 7. Once a week apply a mask Adding a weekly mask into your skincare routine can make a huge difference when it comes to managing hormonal breakouts. Masks help give the skin a deeper clean while targeting excess oil, congestion, and inflammation, all without needing to overload your skin with harsh daily treatments! Use a detoxifying or clarifying mask to help absorb excess oil, decongest pores, and calm inflammation, especially in the lead-up to your period when hormonal breakouts often flare. Our recommendation: Pevonia Pure Skin Charcoal Mask This purifying charcoal and clay mask is ideal for oily, congested, and breakout-prone skin. It helps draw out impurities, absorb excess oil, and leave the skin feeling clearer, smoother, and more balanced without stripping away essential moisture. It’s the perfect weekly reset for skin that feels congested, inflamed, or prone to stubborn hormonal breakouts. “Being in my 50's I wasn't sure if this would dry my skin out, but I bought it coz I had a few breakouts - hormonal I guess. I've used it daily for about 3 days and it's totally cleared my skin up - it feels de-congested, clear and smooth. I love this mask.” – Melinda Hopkins The lifestyle habits that can actually make a difference too Skincare can manage the symptoms of hormonal acne beautifully but if you want to address the root cause as well, these lifestyle factors are worth taking seriously: Avoid picking or squeezing breakouts Because hormonal blemishes are deep, picking or squeezing them (even though tempting) won't bring them to a head. Picking often leads to more inflammation and can increase the risk of marks or scarring. Track your cycle If you notice your skin flares up a week before your period, you can adjust your skincare a few days early to include more purifying, anti-inflammatory ingredients as a preventative step. Reduce your dairy and sugar intake While diet doesn't cause acne, high-sugar foods and dairy can cause spikes in insulin and inflammation, which can worsen hormonal flares. Reducing high-glycaemic foods is actually one of the most evidence-backed dietary changes for hormonal acne. Swapping refined carbohydrates and sugars for whole grains, vegetables and protein helps stabilise blood sugar and reduce androgen activity. Focus on stress management Stress is actually one of the biggest contributors to hormonal breakouts! This is because stress releases a hormone called cortisol, which directly tells your skin to produce more oil leading to inflammation and flare ups! Believe me we know saying manage your stress is easier said than done! But something as simple as medication, listening to music, breathing mindfully and exercising (even if it’s a walk) can help regulate cortisol levels. Also never underestimate the power of a calming self-care ritual! And a good night's sleep (7 to 9 hours nine hours is not a luxury for acne-prone skin, it’s part of the treatment!) Consider spearmint tea There is actually meaningful clinical evidence that spearmint tea has mild anti-androgenic properties. Two cups a day has been shown in small studies to reduce hormonal acne. It’s not a miracle cure but it’s a pleasant, zero-risk addition to a management approach. Talk to your GP or dermatologist If your hormonal acne is severe, cystic or significantly affecting your quality of life, please seek professional medical advice. There are effective medical interventions available, from oral contraceptives to spironolactone, that work alongside good skincare.   Hormonal acne can take time to improve, so consistency is essential. Rather than attacking the skin with aggressive products, focus on supporting and strengthening the skin barrier while using targeted ingredients that help reduce congestion and inflammation over time. With the right skincare routine, professional advice, and healthy lifestyle habits, hormonal acne can absolutely become more manageable.
Woman with bright, refreshed eyes after using skincare eye treatment

Say goodbye to tired eyes: 8 expert tips for a brighter look

by Jo Boyden on Apr 24 2026
Nothing gives away a late night, busy week or stress quite like our eyes. Puffiness, dark circles, dryness and fine lines can make us look more tired (and older!) than we actually are. But before we reach for the concealer (although who doesn’t love a good concealer) there are a number of ways (and products) to refresh the delicate eye area and fast too! Keep reading for 8 expert tips to transform your tired eyes for a youthful, brighter look.   Firstly though, why do your eyes look so tired? Before reaching for the right products, it’s important to understand what is actually causing your eyes to look older than they are. The skin around our eyes is thinner, more delicate and often the first area to show signs of fatigue, dehydration, stress and ageing. In fact, the skin around our eyes is up to ten times thinner than the skin on the rest of our face! Crazy right? That’s because it has fewer oil glands, less collagen, and reduced blood circulation compared to all the other areas. And when we are tired or our skin is poorly hydrated it appears even more thin, more transparent, making the underlying vessels more visible! Add to that the fact that we blink around 10,000 times a day, squint at screens, sleep on our faces and rub our eyes when we're tired, it's no wonder the eye area takes such a hit. The result? Dark circles, puffiness, fine lines, crow's feet, under-eye bags and that general hollowed-out, less-than-rested look no matter how much sleep we may actually have had.   How to fix your tired eyes We talked to the BC experts, put together a guide, and this is how to best refresh tired eyes quickly, and with the right products, results can be almost instant!   1. Start with a cold compress One of the fastest ways to de-puff tired eyes is cooling the area. The cold helps constrict blood vessels, reduce swelling and wake up the eye area almost immediately. Try: Chilled eye masks Cold spoons from the fridge placed over the eyes for 60 seconds can work wonders for an immediate "eye-lift" effect. Cold cucumbers (this is thanks to the vitamin c and caffeic acid in cucumbers!) Cotton pads soaked in cool water Cold potato slices (straight from the fridge) is another goodie and fantastic natural remedy. The enzymes and the astringent properties in the potatoes help reduce inflammation as well as tighten the skin too. An eye gel Tip: Keep your eye gel in the fridge for an instant morning refresh.   2. Hydrate the eye area properly Tired eyes often aren’t just tired, they’re dehydrated. When the delicate under-eye area lacks moisture, fine lines look deeper, skin appears duller, and concealer can crease more noticeably. Look for eye products containing: Hyaluronic acid Vitamin C Marine collagen Ceramides Squalane These ingredients help plump, smooth and brighten the skin. BC Pick: Pevonia “C” Evolutive Eye Gel It’s not only a firm favourite for refreshing tired eyes with the entire BC team, but the BC customers love it too. It’s a non-sticky, lightweight gel that is not only beautifully cooling on application, calming and depuffing the delicate eye area, but it also helps hydrate, brighten and smooth the eyes, reducing the appearance of fine lines too! What’s more it’s formulated with vitamin c, hyaluronic acid, marine collagen and ginkgo biloba, as well as green coffee! “I had a problem with puffy old looking eyes and was hoping that this gel would do the job as I was hating the way my eyes looked and I'll tell you, this gel worked INSTANTLY on me! It's a very good de-puffer for sure!” – Suzette   3. Target puffiness with massage Fluid retention is a major reason eyes look puffy in the morning and gently massaging the area around your eyes can make a huge difference as it improves circulation and calms the fluid build-up around your eyes. Use your ring finger to gently tap from the inner corner outward or lightly roll a chilled jade roller around the orbital bone. This encourages lymphatic drainage and can make eyes look fresher within minutes! Remember: Be gentle! The eye area doesn’t like rough handling. 4. Invest in a proper eye treatment The eye area deserves more than leftover face moisturiser. Targeted eye products are designed with textures and ingredients suited to thinner skin, helping address puffiness, lines, dark circles and dullness more effectively. Look for products formulated with: Vitamin C Niacinamide Peptides Caffeine Light-reflecting minerals BC Pick: Vie Collection Chrono Eyes Puffiness-Dark Circles Wrinkle Cream Formulated with advanced anti-ageing ingredients including encapsulated high molecular weight hyaluronic acid, injectables-like peptides, phytosterols and fatty acids, Vitamin C and Niacinamide (Vitamin B3), this luxurious cream works to smooth wrinkles by boosting collagen production while its decongestion properties help reduce puffiness and diminish the look of tired eyes. The cream also -tackles dark circles with brightening agents that work to even out skin tone, leaving you looking well-rested and refreshed, yes even after a late-night Netflix binge which I am often guilty of! What’s even better is its lightweight, non-greasy texture that absorbs quickly making it perfect for use under makeup or as part of your nightly skincare routine. “This is a wonderful eye cream, it gives immediate gratification thanks to a pearlescent finish that instantly brightens the eye area and it has definitely calmed my puffiness, lightened by dark circles and even smoothed my wrinkles! It’s truly a fabulous eye cream that is well worth the price tag.” – Lisa M 5. Use caffeine for a wake-up effect Caffeine isn’t just for coffee. In skincare, it can help temporarily tighten the look of puffiness and stimulate circulation. That’s why caffeine eye products are brilliant before work, events or mornings when you need to fake eight hours sleep.   6. Correct concealer application A concealer can be a lifesaver when it comes to tired eyes but if it’s not the right concealer or it’s applied incorrectly it can sometimes make tired eyes look worse! To brighten instantly: With a good eye gel or cream moisturise the eye area first so it’s hydrated Use a nourishing concealer that is lighter than your foundation Opt for a peach based concealer to neutralize dark blue or purple under-eye circles Apply concealer only where needed Set sparingly with powder Remember heavy concealer often settles into fine lines and adds years. BC pick: ELES Dual Action Concealer.  Formulated with hyaluronic acid, vitamin c, peptides and caffeine, this anti-ageing concealer is a powerhouse that actually helps to gradually improve skin’s texture while concealing those obvious under eye dark circles. Its moisturising formula provides continuous hydration as well as a natural longwearing finish meaning it lasts for hours without seeping into fine lines and wrinkles! “I love this product been using it for 2 years. You only need the littlest amount to hide dark under eyes reduce the look of wrinkles around your nose and mouth. I always have to have it. – Josephine P 7. Sleep smarter! If tired eyes are a daily issue, prevention matters! Try: Sleeping slightly elevated Reducing salty foods late at night Limiting alcohol Managing allergies Taking screen breaks and no screen an hour before bed! Your eyes often reflect what’s happening internally.   8. Don’t forget the "inside-out" approach While professional skincare is your best defence, don't underestimate the power of hydration. Drinking a large glass of water first thing in the morning helps flush out the excess salt that might be causing your under-eye bags.   Remember tired eyes are very common, but they’re also treatable. A few small changes, the right ingredients, and targeted products can quickly make the eye area look brighter, smoother and far more awake.
8 ingredients your sensitive skin should avoid

8 ingredients your sensitive skin should avoid

by Jo Boyden on Mar 31 2026
If you have sensitive skin, you already know it can feel like everything is a potential trigger. That new “gentle, nourishing, and dermatologist-tested” product that sounded so ideal for your easily irritated complexion, turned out to be not-so-gentle after all, leaving you with a red, stinging face! The thing is, sensitive skin is often the result of a thinner or compromised skin barrier. This means irritants, allergens, and harsh actives can sneak in far more easily than they would for someone with a more resilient complexion. What makes it even trickier is that the culprits aren’t always obvious. In fact, many of the ingredients most likely to trigger sensitivity are hiding in plain sight! Even in products marketed specifically for "sensitive" skin! That’s why becoming confident at reading ingredient labels is one of the most valuable skincare skills you can have. Knowing what to leave out of your routine is just as important as knowing what to include. And once you understand which ingredients tend to cause trouble, caring for sensitive skin becomes so much easier, we promise! To help you shop smarter and keep your complexion calm, we’ve rounded up the top ingredient’s experts agree sensitive skin should always avoid.   What your sensitive skin really means Sensitive skin isn’t just a “type”, it’s a condition. At its core, it usually comes down to a compromised skin barrier, which means your skin isn’t as strong or resilient as it should be. As a result, it reacts more easily to ingredients, environmental stress, and even changes in routine. This is why products that work beautifully for others can cause redness, stinging, breakouts, or inflammation for you. The goal with sensitive skin isn’t to overload it with actives, it’s to protect, strengthen, and support it!   The 8 ingredients to avoid From strong fragrances to overly drying alcohols, there are a few common ingredients that can make sensitive skin worse without you realising it. 1. Fragrance (synthetic & natural) Fragrance is one of the most common triggers for sensitive skin and one of the easiest to overlook! It’s often listed as “parfum” or “aroma” and can even include essential oils. Why avoid it:Fragrance can cause irritation, redness, and allergic reactions, especially with repeated use. Even natural fragrance isn’t always gentle on reactive skin.   2. Denatured alcohol (Alcohol Denat.) Not all alcohols are bad but denatured alcohol is one your skin could definitely do without! Why avoid it:It strips the skin of its natural oils, weakens the barrier, and can leave your skin feeling tight, dry, and more prone to irritation.   3. Essential Oils While they sound calming and natural, essential oils can be surprisingly reactive for sensitive skin. Why avoid them:Ingredients like citrus oils, peppermint, and eucalyptus can trigger redness and sensitivity, particularly in already compromised skin.   4. Exfoliating acids (overuse of AHAs/BHAs) Exfoliation is important, we know this but with sensitive skin, more is definitely not more! Why be cautious:Over-exfoliating can damage the skin barrier, leading to increased redness, irritation, and sensitivity. Strong acids or frequent use can quickly tip your skin out of balance. To read about exfoliation and sensitive skin and what you should do, click here.   5. Sulphates (SLS & SLES) These are commonly found in cleansers and are responsible for that foamy, “squeaky clean” feeling. Why avoid them:They can be overly stripping, removing essential moisture and leaving the skin barrier vulnerable and irritated, not good when you already have a compromised skin barrier!   6. Strong retinol and retinoids Retinol and retinoids can be outstanding when it comes to ageing but are very powerful! Therefore, they need to be approached very carefully if your skin is sensitive. Why be cautious:They can cause peeling, dryness, and irritation, particularly if introduced too quickly or used in high strengths. For everything you need to know about retinol and sensitive skin click here. And if retinol still scares you, here are some outstanding alternatives for your sensitive skin.   7. High-Concentration Vitamin C (L-Ascorbic Acid) Vitamin C is a glow-boosting favourite, but not all forms are suitable for sensitive skin. Why be cautious:High concentrations can be too stimulating, leading to stinging and redness. Gentler derivatives are often a better option. Look for vitamin C serums formulated with a gentle derivative such as sodium ascorbyl phosphate, magnesium ascorbyl phosphate or Tetrahexyldecyl ascorbate, these vitamin C forms are considered more stable and less irritating. 8. Artificial Colours & Dyes These are often added purely for aesthetic reasons — and your skin doesn’t need them. Why avoid them:They offer no skin benefit and can increase the risk of irritation or allergic reactions.   What skincare ingredients your sensitive skin does need Instead of focusing only on what to avoid, it’s equally important to prioritise ingredients that will support and strengthen your skin barrier. These include; Niacinamide (Vitamin B3) Niacinamide enhances the skin’s natural barrier by increasing the production of ceramides, which are essential for locking in moisture and protecting the skin from environmental stressors. Niacinamide is also known for its anti-inflammatory properties, making it a great choice for those with sensitive, rosacea or acne-prone skin. It helps to calm redness and irritation, leading to a clearer, more even complexion. Ceramides When you suffer from sensitive or easily reactive skin, ceramides can be especially beneficial. They help to protect, repair and strengthen your skins barrier, shielding it from external aggressors such as harsh weather conditions, bacteria and pollutants. This helps reduce skin redness, irritation and sensitivity. Ceramides also help your skin hold onto moisture. They act like little sponges, preventing water loss and keeping your skin hydrated and plump! Hyaluronic acid Hyaluronic acid is a powerful hydrating ingredient that attracts and retains moisture within the skin. For sensitive skin, maintaining hydration is key to keeping the barrier strong and functioning optimally. By drawing water into the skin, it helps to reduce dryness, tightness and discomfort, leaving the complexion feeling soft, smooth and comfortably hydrated without causing irritation. Panthenol (Vitamin B5) Panthenol is a deeply soothing and restorative ingredient that works to calm irritation while supporting the skin’s natural repair process. It helps to strengthen the skin barrier, improve hydration levels, and reduce redness, making it particularly beneficial for compromised or reactive skin. It also leaves the skin feeling soft, supple, and more resilient over time. Calming botanicals (like White Water Lily (Nymphaea Alba), Chamomile, Centella Asiatica, Cucumber & Aloe Vera) Calming botanicals are essential for soothing sensitive skin and reducing visible signs of irritation. Ingredients such as White Water Lily, centella asiatica, chamomile, and aloe vera work to gently calm inflammation, minimise redness, and provide lightweight hydration. They help restore balance to the skin, leaving it feeling comforted, refreshed, and more stable.   All these ingredients help calm irritation, restore hydration, and build resilience over time.   A few of our favourites for sensitive skin: Pevonia Sensitive Skin Cleanser Packed with chamomile and other soothing botanicals, this natural cleanser specifically designed to gently cleanse sensitive skin, is both calming and comforting. It’s non-irritating formula effectively removes impurities, excess oil, and makeup without stripping the skin or disrupting its barrier. It was calm and soothing exactly as the name suggests. Easy to use, contains plenty of product that you can massage in afterwards. With the right approach, sensitive skin doesn’t have to mean reactive skin. It can be calm, balanced, and beautifully healthy.
How to fade dark spots fast: The skincare routine that works

How to fade dark spots fast: The skincare routine that works

by Jo Boyden on Mar 27 2026
Post-summer pigmentation (think dark spots, patches, or an uneven skin tone) is one of the most common skin concerns we hear about at BC. It’s also one of the trickiest to treat! And the frustrating part is that even the most sun-savvy of us aren't immune. But while dark spots can be stubborn, they are reversible, with the right approach, ingredients and high-performance products. Autumn is actually the best time to start too as UV intensity is lower and your skin is ready to repair after the long summer months! Need help to fade your dark spots? Keep reading for everything you need to know about treating your post summer pigmentation including the expert-approved routine that delivers real results and fast!   Firstly though, what actually causes dark spots? Before we talk about how to treat them, it helps to understand why dark spots form in the first place. Dark spots (also called hyperpigmentation, sun spots, or post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation) are caused by an overproduction of melanin in the skin. Melanin is the pigment responsible for your skin's colour, and when it's produced unevenly, it shows up as patches, spots, and an uneven skin tone. While sun exposure is the most common trigger, hormonal changes, inflammation (like post-acne marks), and even certain medications can all cause melanin to go into overdrive! And summer accelerates all of this, which is why autumn is when it tends to start to slow down. The good news though is melanin overproduction can be interrupted, corrected, and prevented, with the right ingredients!   The ingredients that actually work on dark spots Not all brightening ingredients are effective at really tackling those pesky dark spots. If you are looking for products that really work you want to be sure they are formulated with any (or all!) of the following: Niacinamide (also known as vitamin B3) is one of the most well-researched brightening ingredients available. It works by interrupting the transfer of melanin to the surface of the skin, effectively reducing the appearance of dark spots over time. It's also anti-inflammatory, hydrating, and incredibly well-tolerated, even by sensitive skin. Tranexamic Acid is a newer but increasingly recognised brightening powerhouse. It works by blocking the signals that trigger melanin production in the first place, making it particularly effective for hormonal pigmentation and sun damage. Vitamin C is the most well-known skin “brightener” and antioxidant that neutralises the free radical damage caused by UV exposure (one of the primary drivers of dark spot formation). It also inhibits the enzyme that produces melanin, brightening existing spots while preventing new ones. Glutathione is a potent antioxidant that works systemically to inhibit melanin production and shift the skin's natural pigmentation process toward lighter, clearer tones. It's a particularly exciting ingredient in professional-grade Korean skincare! Marine-derived actives including Pancratium Maritimum extract (derived from Mediterranean Sea Lily) and blue micro-algae are where brands like Phytomer genuinely stand apart. These ocean-sourced ingredients have natural UV-defence mechanisms that translate beautifully into skin protection and pigmentation correction in one!   The expert-approved routine to fade dark spots   1. Target & correct with brightening serums The first step in treating pigmentation is introducing targeted actives that work to reduce melanin production and visibly brighten the skin. We highly recommend Hubislab’s Derma Max Brilliance Serum. It’s designed to penetrate deep into the dermal layers for optimum effectiveness and it doesn’t just "mask" unevenness; it uses a sophisticated brightening complex to inhibit melanin production. This serum is a favorite because it offers a dual approach: it works to dissolve the appearance of existing dark spots while preventing future discolouration from surfacing. It leaves the skin looking luminous and remarkably clear.  2. Enhance results with an advanced daily cream To enhance your results and target pigmentation from multiple angles, incorporating a high-performance brightening moisturiser is essential. This step helps to lock in hydration while delivering powerful actives that work continuously throughout the day. A standout addition to your routine is the NEW VIE Collection Mela Bright Dark Spot Brightening Cream. This advanced formula goes beyond surface-level correction, working deep within the skin to visibly reduce dark spots while restoring clarity and luminosity. Infused with Vitamin B3 (niacinamide), alongside cutting-edge dermocosmetic actives including TR (Thioredoxin Stimulator) and TRX, it targets multiple stages of pigmentation formation! It helps to inhibit melanin transfer, defend against oxidative stress, and support a stronger, more resilient skin barrier. The texture is silky and lightweight and it literally melts effortlessly into the skin to deliver lasting hydration without heaviness. With continued use, your skin will appear more even, radiant, and refined with dark spots visibly softened! What’s more it is the perfect daily cream for all skin types experiencing pigmentation, dullness, or early signs of photo-ageing. 3. Professional-level brightening care For more stubborn pigmentation, layering in intensive treatment products can significantly accelerate results. Introduce Hubislab’s Derma Max Brightening Clinic into your routine. It is specifically formulated for those struggling with hyperpigmentation and dullness. This professional-grade cream acts as a "corrective shield." It’s a deeply moisturising night cream formulated with tranexamic acid, Glutathione, antioxidants and vitamins (C, E, B5, B6 and B3 - niacinamide), and it nourishes the skin whilst soothing irritation, improving elasticity, correcting pigmentation and brightening the complexion all whilst you sleep! If you have specific patches that refuse to budge, this is the "clinic in a bottle" your routine has been missing!  4. A weekly targeted treatment mask Sometimes, your skin needs a concentrated boost to "kickstart" the fading process. Masks unfortunately are often overlooked, but they can deliver a concentrated boost of brightening ingredients which will make a huge difference to your dark spots. Cue Phytomer’s Oligoforce Lumination - Targeted Dark Spot Mask with Vitamin B3. This sheet mask does it all! It isn’t any old sheet mask, it helps fade dark spots, reduce wrinkles, plump skin and brightens too! It is soaked with a lotion enriched with Vitamin B3 (Niacinamide) and it visibly smoothes, plumps, strengthens the skin barrier while visibly fading those dark spots. After just one use, your skin will appear more uniform, hydrated, and significantly brighter!   5. Daily SPF protection (the Non-Negotiable!) If you’re treating dark spots without daily SPF, you’re fighting an uphill battle. UV exposure is the number‑one reason pigmentation returns, deepens or spreads. The sunscreen we can’t get enough of is the Phytomer Sunactive Protective Sunscreen Dark Spots - Signs of Aging SPF30. It is specifically designed for skin prone to dark spots and signs of ageing. Unlike standard sunscreens, this formula contains marine-based ingredients that target the mechanisms of photo-ageing. It provides broad-spectrum SPF30 protection while actively working to ensure your pigmentation doesn't darken or return either! Genius.   Expert tips to fade dark spots faster As well as your targeted routine there are other steps you can take to help fade your dark spots even faster! Treat dark spots early The sooner you address pigmentation, the easier it is to correct! Avoid over exfoliating We know the importance of exfoliating, after all it removes those dead skin cells, boosts cell turnover, improves texture, and enhances absorption of skincare products! But over-exfoliating your skin in want of a glowy complexion can actually worsen pigmentation and cause inflammation too! Consistency is everything Results take time, but daily use delivers visible improvement we promise! Protect your skin daily We’ve told you SPF is a non-negotiable but this means even on cloudy days! This is because UV exposure can trigger pigmentation at all times!   Dark spots do not have to be permanent, but they do need a thoughtful, long‑term approach. With consistency, the right ingredients and a sun‑wise habit, you really can wake up to a more even, calmer, and brighter complexion.

Barrier repair skincare: Why strengthening your skin barrier is a must

by Jo Boyden on Feb 11 2026
⏱️ 8 minute read If your skin is suddenly feeling tight, looking a little flaky or red perhaps? Or maybe it’s reacting to products it once loved, chances are your skin barrier is compromised. And you’re definitely not alone!  Skin barrier “burnout” is one of the biggest skin concerns right now, and honestly, social media with its 10 step routines hasn’t helped! Between layered actives, constant exfoliation and daily UV exposure, our skin barriers are working overtime. The good news? Barrier-first skincare can help restore balance and calm once again. Keep reading to discover how.   Firstly though what exactly is your skin barrier? And why is it so important? Your skin barrier is essentially your skin’s protective shield. When it’s healthy, skin feels comfortable, hydrated and calm. When it’s damaged, everything feels harder, moisture escapes, irritants get in, and suddenly even “gentle” products sting! The overuse of actives, too much exfoliation and skipping daily SPF all disrupt our barrier. Add in UV exposure and pollution, and it’s no wonder so many of us are dealing with sensitivity and inflammation! That’s where barrier repair skincare becomes essential.  When the skin barrier is compromised, even the best products won’t perform properly. Repairing the barrier allows skin to respond better, heal faster and look healthier! Barrier repair skincare focuses on repairing and protecting the skin barrier before introducing active treatments.Unlike traditional routines that prioritise results-driven actives first, barrier repair skincare restores balance so skin stays calm, resilient and better able to respond to products.   The essential ingredients for skin barrier repair True barrier recovery requires a strategic approach. By focusing on lipid replenishment and anti-inflammatory support, you can shield your complexion from further damage while restoring its internal balance. These ingredients don't just sit on the surface they act as the building blocks for a healthier, more resilient skin structure.   Ceramides The building blocks of your barrier's lipid matrix. Ceramides restore the "mortar" between skin cells, locking in moisture and preventing trans-epidermal water loss (TEWL). Niacinamide (Vitamin B3) A multitasking powerhouse that strengthens the barrier, reduces inflammation, regulates oil production, and improves skin texture, all without irritation. Peptides Signal molecules that stimulate collagen production and support skin repair and regeneration. Essential for aging or stressed skin. Exosomes Cutting-edge technology that delivers active ingredients at a cellular level, promoting healing, reducing inflammation, and enhancing barrier function. Hyaluronic Acid Draws moisture into the skin and plumps the surface, creating a hydration reservoir that supports barrier recovery. Antioxidants (Vitamin C, Marine Collagen) Protect against free radical damage and support collagen synthesis for long-term resilience. Broad-Spectrum SPF The non-negotiable. UV protection is the most important step in preventing further barrier breakdown!   The best barrier repair products If your skin is feeling stressed, sensitized, reactive or post-treatment, these professional strength products will help bring your skin back into balance!   Phytomer Oligoperformance Serum with Exosomes This isn't just a serum, it’s a high-tech shield for your skin’s structural integrity, a next-level barrier protection. The marine exosomes work wonders, improving skin density by 35% and quality by 28% in just 7 days (yes, really). Plus, red coral extract revitalizes collagen production, repairing and strengthening your barrier from the inside out. The result? Firmer, more resilient skin that can handle whatever life throws at it! Think of it as a reset button for stressed skin. The perfect solution for chronically sensitized skin, pollution exposure, barrier fatigue.  Vie Collection Post Peel Skin Barrier Serum This is hands down the ultimate recovery treatment for post-procedure, over-exfoliated, or inflamed skin! As your routine's final "lock-in" step, it seals actives in place while building a breathable protective barrier for lasting comfort. Peptides and adenosine smooth lines and boost bounce, niacinamide evens tone, and calming extracts like Centella soothe redness. Ceramides plus vitamin E shield against stressors, plumping skin for that youthful look. Specifically designed for post-treatment it provides maximum protection without any of the typical sunscreen irritation. If your skin barrier is compromised you know it’s time to strip back your routine, focus on ceramides and niacinamide, protect with SPF, and give your skin the time it needs to heal! Key Takeaways Your skin barrier is your protective shield – when compromised, skin becomes sensitive, dehydrated, and reactive Over-exfoliation, harsh actives, and skipping SPF are the main culprits behind barrier damage Essential barrier repair ingredients include ceramides, niacinamide, peptides, hyaluronic acid, and exosomes Focus on hydration and protection first, then introduce actives once your barrier is restored Daily SPF is non-negotiable for maintaining barrier health and preventing further damage Recovery takes time – strip back your routine and give your skin 2-4 weeks to heal properly

How to make your pores look smaller in 7 simple steps

How to make your pores look smaller in 7 simple steps

by Jo Boyden on Jul 04 2025
Pores. We all have them, after all they are crucial for healthy functioning skin! But for some of us, they can appear a little more prominent than we’d like! In fact, enlarged pores are a very common skincare concern, and while you can’t eliminate them (they’re essential after all!) the great news is you can definitely make them look a whole lot smaller! Want to know how? Keep reading for the best routine to minimise your pores and achieve a smoother, flawless complexion too!   Firstly, why do your pores look larger than you’d like? If your pores are looking larger than usual, there are several common reasons behind it. 1. Excess Sebum (oil) production This is one of the most common reasons for enlarged pores. Each pore contains a sebaceous gland that produces oil (sebum) to keep your skin moisturised. When your skin produces too much oil, it can mix with dead skin cells and other debris, clogging the pore. This buildup stretches the pore walls, making the opening appear larger. This is particularly common in people with oily or combination skin. 2. Genetics Unfortunately, your genes play a significant role in pore size! If your parents or close relatives have naturally larger pores, you're more likely to have them too. This is simply due to inherited skin structure and oil gland activity (thanks family!) 3. Ageing! As we age our skin loses collagen and elastin, the proteins that provide firmness and support. When the skin around the pores loses its elasticity, it can sag and stretch, making the pores appear wider and more open. 4. Sun damage UV rays break down collagen and elastin, similar to the natural ageing process. This damage weakens the skin's support structure, leading to less firm skin and consequently, larger-looking pores. Sun exposure can also thicken the skin, which can make pores more visible. 5. Clogged pores Congested pores look a while lot more noticeable that pores that aren’t! This is because a mix of dead skin cells, excess oil, makeup, and dirt can get trapped inside the pore. This accumulation creates a plug (a blackhead if exposed to air and oxidised, or a whitehead if closed off), stretching the pore opening and making it appear enlarged. 6. Improper skincare Skipping exfoliation or not cleansing properly can lead to buildup and visible pores.   The 7 steps to minimising your pores   1. Double cleanse daily Our pores often appear larger when clogged with oil, sweat, dirt, and makeup so effective cleansing really is the first essential step to minimising their appearance. Double cleansing helps remove every trace of grime, without stripping your skin. It also prevents a build-up, which can stretch pore walls. Simply start with an oil-based cleanser (we LOVE the ELES Transformation Cleansing Oil) to melt away makeup and sunscreen, then follow with a gentle water-based cleanser like Phytomer’s Souffle Marin Cleansing Foaming Cream to detoxify, decongest and purify your pores. Formulated with marine botanicals like OLIGOMER® and marine spring water, it helps soothe, remineralise, and maintain skin balance while gently but effectively removing any trace of remaining makeup, excess oil and impurities. “This is an excellent cleanser for my skin that is normal to oily in the warmer summer months. It has a mild exfoliant in it, lactic acid, that helps keep my pores purified. I am very happy with it.” – Brianna (BC customer) And for the month of July, when you purchase the best-selling Phytomer Expert Youth Wrinkle Plumping Cream (one of my personal favourites) you’ll receive this powerhouse cleanser for FREE) Top tip: Make sure you avoid harsh cleansers that strip your skin, they can actually increase oil production and worsen the look of pores.   2. Exfoliate (but don’t overdo it!) I’m sure we all know regular exfoliation will help keep our skin’s surface smooth and clear but did you ever consider that by not adding this simple step into your skincare routine once or twice weekly, dead skin cells can settle into your pores making them look larger and uneven! So, if you are dealing with enlarged pores and aren’t exfoliating as you should be, start now! If your skin tends to naturally be on the more combination or oily side opt for chemical exfoliants formulated with glycolic acid (AHA), salicylic acid (BHA), or lactic acid (AHA) to keep pores clear. If your skin is more on the sensitive side, you’ll want to choose a good enzyme exfoliator (like papaya or pineapple-based formulas) as these are a more gentle, non-invasive option. The enzymes literally dissolve the dead skin, so no harsh exfoliation in sight! Just be sure to not over exfoliate as you can risk irritation and inflaming your pores! 1-3 times a week is sufficient dependant on how sensitive your skin is. For more on exfoliation, the different types and the best option for your skin click here.  3. Use a Pore-Refining Toner or Essence Toners or essences with ingredients like niacinamide, witch hazel, or zinc help refine texture, tighten the appearance of pores and balance oil production. We love Phytomer Oligomarine Flawless-Skin Tonic, formulated with niacinamide, witch hazel and zinc, it tones the skin, tightens the pores and brightens the complexion! 4. Apply a clay mask weekly Clay masks, especially those with kaolin or bentonite, are brilliant for drawing out excess oil and impurities from pores, leaving them looking tighter and less visible. Apply a clay mask once or twice a week for a deep-cleaning boost like Phytomer Citylife Radiance Reviving Mask with Clay. Combining 100% natural red and white clays, blue microalgae, red algae and a comprehensive depolluting complex of 3 marine sugars, it reveals luminosity, radiance and refined pores after just one application. 5. Target with a serum Serums are concentrated treatments designed to go deeper into the skin, making them ideal for refining texture and targeting pore visibility. When it comes to minimising, pores look for serums formulated with retinol, niacinamide and peptides. These ingredients not only boost cell turnover and support collagen production but help unclog pores, smooth uneven skin tone and ensure skin looks firmer and tighter! Try Vie Collection’s Vita B3 Concentrated solution, packed with niacinamide to visibly tighten pores, smooth texture, and brighten overall tone. What’s more when you purchase a selected Vie Collection Moisturiser this July, you’ll receive the Vita B3 serum for FREE!  6. Make sure you moisturise daily, even if your skin is oily! Dehydrated skin overcompensates with more oil, which can stretch and clog pores. The right moisturiser can help balance and smooth skin. If enlarged pores are a problem make sure you opt for lightweight, non-comedogenic moisturisers formulated with hyaluronic acid, glycerin, or squalane and specifically designed to help pores. Remember well-hydrated skin helps maintain elasticity and prevents pores from appearing larger. 7. Protect with SPF (Every. Single. Day.) We all know sun damage breaks down collagen and elastin, but did you know that this in turns causes our pores to sag and look larger over time! Wearing an SPF daily really will help maintain your skin’s firmness and youthfulness. Just be sure to look for non-comedogenic formulas and mineral sunscreens with zinc oxide or titanium dioxide if you have sensitive or acne-prone skin! And use it every morning even on cloudy days, to protect your skin and keep pores looking refined!   Additional expert tips As well as following a daily skincare routine, there are a few additional things you need to ensure you do/don’t do as well! 1. Avoid squeezing or picking at your pores as this can cause irritation and even scaring! 2. Use a pore perfecting primer before applying makeup. A good primer will become your lifeline if you are prone to enlarged pores. Not only will it stop your foundation from sliding off your face quite literally, it’ll keep your base smooth while reducing the appearance of pores (and fine lines!) 3. Avoid using heavy, pore-clogging makeup, try mineral makeup instead!   A consistent routine can dramatically refine your pores appearance over time. By keeping them clean, exfoliated, hydrated, and protected, your skin will look smoother, more even, and radiant we promise!

Exosomes explained: How they’re revolutionizing skincare

Exosomes explained: How they’re revolutionizing skincare

by Jo Boyden on Jun 06 2025
You’ve probably heard the buzz around powerhouse ingredients like niacinamide, retinol, peptides, and even tranexamic acid, essentials for healthy, rejuvenated skin. But there’s a new star making waves in the world of advanced aesthetics: exosomes. These tiny, cell-derived bubbles are packed with proteins, lipids, and growth factors, and they’re rapidly gaining attention for their ability to transform skin health and take your skincare routine to the next level! So, how do exosomes actually work? and what can they do for your complexion? Keep reading as we break down everything you need to know about exosomes, the future-forward ingredient set to revolutionize skin rejuvenation, boost collagen, and deliver radiant, youthful results!   What are exosomes and how do they work? Think of exosomes as the ultimate messengers between cells. They deliver powerful ingredients right where they’re needed, helping to calm inflammation, boost fibroblast activity, and regulate collagen production. The result? Skin that repairs and rejuvenates itself from the inside out. Unlike some treatments that only work on the surface, exosomes get deeper, helping to create real, visible changes in skin texture and tone.   Why are exosomes the next big thing in skincare? The excitement around exosomes isn't just hype, it's rooted in their unique ability to communicate and stimulate without being actual cells themselves. Exosomes are outstanding in skincare because they; Are powerful messengers Unlike applying a single growth factor, exosomes deliver a whole symphony of beneficial signals (hundreds of growth factors, peptides, amino acids, and genetic material) in one tiny package. This holistic communication is what makes them so effective. Ensure targeted delivery Because they're naturally occurring "mail packets," exosomes are incredibly efficient at delivering their active components directly to the cells that need them most, promoting more effective regeneration and repair. Stimulate natural processes Instead of just adding ingredients, exosomes are believed to encourage your skin cells to behave more youthfully. They prompt your skin to produce its own collagen, elastin, and hyaluronic acid – the building blocks of firm, plump, and healthy skin. Are anti-inflammatory & healing: Exosomes have potent anti-inflammatory properties, which can be incredibly beneficial for calming irritated skin, reducing redness, and aiding in the healing process. This makes them promising for conditions like rosacea or post-procedure recovery. What can exosomes do for your skin? (The benefits!) Incorporating exosomes into your skincare routine provides your skin with a multitude of outstanding benefits! These include; Significant anti-ageing By boosting collagen and elastin production, exosomes can lead to visibly firmer, plumper skin, reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Enhanced skin regeneration They accelerate the skin's natural repair mechanisms, leading to faster healing and improved overall skin health. Improved skin tone & texture Expect a more even skin tone, reduced redness, and a smoother, more refined texture as cells regenerate more efficiently. Increased hydration By stimulating the production of hyaluronic acid, exosomes can dramatically improve your skin's ability to retain moisture, leading to a dewy, supple complexion. Reduced Inflammation Their calming properties make them excellent for soothing sensitive or compromised skin, reducing redness and irritation. Antioxidant protection Packed with antioxidant enzymes, exosomes protect skin cells from oxidative stress caused by pollution, UV rays, and other environmental aggressors, helping to prevent premature ageing Faster post-procedure recovery Exosomes are increasingly used to help skin heal faster and more effectively after treatments like microneedling, lasers, or chemical peels, minimising downtime.   How are exosomes used in skincare? Exosomes are often featured in high-performance products, and post-treatment skincare to accelerate recovery and healing and amplify results. They are highly purified, ethically sourced, and carefully formulated for topical use making them incredibly safe to use. In fact, because they’re derived from stem cells, they work harmoniously with your body’s natural processes meaning minimal risk and maximum reward! And when used regularly in your skincare routine, exosome-based products can deliver dramatic, long-term improvements in skin health and radiance. Adult Acne Solutions: Tried-and-tested treatments that work

by Jo Boyden on May 16 2025
Unfortunately, acne isn’t just a teenage problem like many of us may have once thought! It can be frustrating reality for adults too. Whether it's caused by hormones, stress, diet, or environmental factors, adult acne can be stubborn and challenging to treat. But if you’re currently dealing with this skin condition and looking for solutions that work, we are here to tell you they do exist! Whether you're dealing with persistent pimples, hormonal flare-ups, or the occasional breakout, keep reading for the most effective, tried-and-tested treatments for clear, calm skin!   Understanding adult acne – why you’re prone to it Before we discuss the best treatments, it's crucial to understand the reasons for adult acne. These are the main contributors; Hormonal Fluctuations Like in your teens, hormonal fluctuations are a major culprit when it comes to acne in adulthood! Especially in women due to menstrual cycles, pregnancy, perimenopause, and hormonal imbalances. Hormones can cause havoc with our skin by increasing oil production, clogging pores, and triggering inflammation leading to breakouts, especially around the jawline and chin. Stress Unfortunately, our busy lives can lead to increased stress levels. Stress in turn triggers hormonal changes, particularly cortisol spikes, which increase oil production, inflammation, and breakouts making adult acne more frequent and stubborn. Skincare Habits Using the wrong products, over-exfoliating, or not cleansing properly can contribute to breakouts. Diet While not a direct cause for everyone, certain foods can exacerbate acne in some people. High-glycaemic foods such as dairy, and processed items can spike insulin, triggering excess oil and breakouts. Environmental pollution Dirt and toxins on our skin from pollution can further contribute to the problem. It clogs pores causing inflammation and breakouts. Antioxidant-rich foods like berries, leafy greens, and nuts help defend skin.   What type of acne do you suffer from? Acne comes in many forms! To find out all about the most common ones and which you might be struggling with click here.   Key ingredients that work to fight acne Certain powerhouse ingredients have been clinically proven to combat acne, these include; Salicylic Acid This oil-soluble beta-hydroxy acid (BHA) can penetrate pores to exfoliate inside and out, helping to unclog them and reduce inflammation preventing further breakouts. It’s particularly effective at treating blackheads and whiteheads. Benzoyl Peroxide This powerful antibacterial ingredient helps to kill acne-causing bacteria while reducing inflammation. Retinol This vitamin A derivative is highly effective at increasing cell turnover, preventing clogged pores, and reducing inflammation. Azelaic Acid This gentle yet effective acid can help reduce redness, inflammation, and hyperpigmentation associated with acne. It also has antibacterial properties. Niacinamide Niacinamide reduces inflammation, regulates oil production, minimizes pores, and strengthens the skin barrier making it effective for calming and preventing acne.   The tried-and-tested acne treatments that deliver results CLEANSER Medicalia Clarifying Cleanser Cleansing is the foundation of any effective acne-fighting routine! Choose Non-Comedogenic Products: Look for products labelled "non-comedogenic" or "oil-free" to avoid clogging pores. Be consistent and patient: Just remember clear skin isn’t an overnight achievement. Stick with a consistent, gentle routine and give your skin the time it needs to heal. Listen to your skin: Pay attention to how your skin reacts to different products and adjust your routine accordingly. Avoid product-hopping though and always patch-test new treatments first. Manage stress: Since stress aggravates acne, practices like meditation, exercise, and better sleep can make a difference. Maintain a healthy diet and stay hydrated: Cutting back on sugar and dairy may help some people minimize breakouts. Staying hydrated flushes toxins and supports skin health. Manage hygiene: Regularly washing pillowcases, makeup brushes, and phones prevents bacteria buildup on your skin.   Looking for makeup tips for your acne prone skin? Click here.

Your guide to serum and the best ones for your skin

by Jo Boyden on May 08 2025
If you are serious about your skincare, and desperate to achieve a healthy, youthful complexion, then the one product you don’t want to skip is a serum! Serums really are powerhouses when it comes to your beauty routine as they deliver a dose of active ingredients deep into the skin to address specific concerns from dullness and dehydration to fine lines, pigmentation and more! So, whether you're looking to brighten, firm, hydrate, or soothe, the right serum really can transform your skin. A serum is a lightweight, fast-absorbing skincare product formulated with a high concentration of active ingredients that deliver real results. Unlike moisturisers, which are designed to hydrate and protect the skin’s barrier, serums, thanks to their smaller molecular size, are able to penetrate the skin more deeply, treating concerns at a cellular level, essential for achieving visible results. Why are serums so important? Adding a serum to your routine can make a significant difference in how your skin looks and feels! They play a crucial role in enhancing your skincare routine because of their efficacy and versatility. Serums are not only designed to target a multitude of skin concerns but to also deliver visible results and quickly! They are also different to oils in that they are easy to layer with other skincare products and can improve your overall skin texture, tone and radiance! Star ingredients to look for in serums When it comes to your serums, it’s important to look at what ingredients they have been formulated with! Here are some of the most powerful actives to look out for when deciding on the right serums for you! Hyaluronic Acid Hyaluronic acid a hydration hero when it comes to skincare! Peptides These short chains of amino acids help stimulate collagen production, improve skin firmness, reduce fine lines, and support overall skin repair and elasticity! The best retinol alternatives for sensitive skin

The best retinol alternatives for sensitive skin

by Jo Boyden on Apr 16 2025
Retinol is often hailed as the holy grail of anti-ageing skincare, known for its powerful ability to boost collagen, smooth wrinkles, even out skin tone and more! But for those with sensitive skin, the idea of applying retinol, especially when you’ve heard how it can cause irritation, seems nothing short of silly, after all, why would you want to exacerbate your already delicate complexion right?  While I’m personally an advocate for retinol (and I have fairly dehydrated and sensitive skin myself), I am here to tell you there are some amazing retinol alternatives that offer similar smoothing, brightening and collagen boosting results, without the irritation! From the best ingredients to expert approved products, keep reading to find out what will work for your sensitive skin.   1. Bakuchiol – the “natural retinol alternative” Derived from the Psoralea corylifolia (Babchi) plant, this powerhouse ingredient has been gaining serious attention for its ability to mimic the effects of retinol, without the irritation! Like with retinol, bakuchiol boosts collagen production to effectively reduce line lines and wrinkles, it also fights hyperpigmentation for a more even skin tone and provides antioxidant protection supporting a healthy skin barrier. What makes it great for sensitive skin types though is it’s gentle and non-irritating! Unlike retinol, bakuchiol doesn’t increase sun sensitivity, meaning you can use it morning and night without worrying about extra SPF protection (though SPF is always a must in the mornings of course!). We love the Vegan friendly Naturys Anti-age No Age Fluid Cream! As well as bakuchiol it’s enriched with peptides and hyaluronic acid which work together to provide skin with intense hydration while soothing, toning and plumping!  2. Niacinamide – The skin-smoothing superstar Also known as vitamin B3, niacinamide, like retinol, is a skincare multitasker! It helps even out skin tone, brighten the complexion, minimise pores, reduce redness, and support the skin’s barrier! And the best part? It’s one of the most well-tolerated skincare ingredients out there, making it ideal for anyone dealing with breakouts, rosacea, sensitive, dry or reactive skin really! Niacinamide is also a great team player, meaning you can pair it with other gentle actives like hyaluronic acid, ceramides, or peptides to boost your results without irritation. Vie Collection Serum De Vie – High Performance Youth Concentrate is a fantastic way to incorporate niacinamide into your routine. This multi-tasking and richly hydrating serum works at a cellular level to protect skin cells and restore a more youthful appearance. An EGF-like peptide enhances cell division to smooth wrinkles, while niacinamide slows the transfer of melanin to key parts of your skin to fade the look of dark spots. 3. Tranexamic Acid: The skin soothing and smoothing solution Another fantastic alternative to retinol, especially for those with sensitive skin or concerns like hyperpigmentation and redness, this powerhouse ingredient is gentle yet highly effective! While it doesn’t offer the same collagen-boosting benefits as retinol and a few of the other ingredients, its excellent in other ways that make it a strong contender for those seeking gentle yet effective skincare results. It works by reducing melanin production, helping to fade dark spots, sun damage, and melasma. Its anti-inflammatory properties also calm redness and irritation, making it ideal for rosacea or reactive skin types. Unlike retinol, it won’t cause peeling or sensitivity, making it a safe, daily-use option. So if you’re looking to brighten and even your complexion without irritation, tranexamic acid is a go-to choice! Try Hubislab Derma Max Brightening Clinic. This deeply moisturising night cream formulated with tranexamic acid, antioxidants and vitamins, nourishes the skin whilst soothing irritation, improving elasticity, correcting pigmentation and brightening the complexion all whilst you sleep! 4. Madecassoside (Centella Asiatica/Cica Extract): The skin regenerator Madecassoside, also derived from Centella Asiatica, helps repair and regenerate the skin. It possesses strong anti-inflammatory properties that help control excessive sebum and soothe and calm irritated skin, making it effective in treating conditions like eczema and psoriasis. Madecassoside also aids in collagen production, promoting skin firmness and elasticity. Its antioxidant properties help protect the skin from environmental damage and premature ageing. This ingredient supports wound healing by stimulating cell regeneration and improving circulation. Overall, Madecassoside is valued in skincare for its ability to enhance skin barrier function, reduce redness, and restore a healthier, more radiant complexion. We highly recommend: Hubislab Premium Active Eternal Face & Eye Cream. Packed with a plethora of goodies from madecassoside and Hyaluronic Acid to peptides and a Botulinum-derived component (an ingredient that is similar to Botox) This 2-in-1 – moisturiser and eye cream is nourishing but perfectly light and promises to improve wrinkles and skin texture while strengthening skin and providing face-lifting effects! We are also obsessed with the entire new Phytomer Cica collection! 5. Peptides: The Gentle Firming Agents Peptides are short chains of amino acids that help rebuild collagen and improve skin elasticity, making them a great anti-ageing alternative to retinol. Unlike retinol, peptides don’t cause dryness, redness, or peeling, making them ideal for delicate complexions. They also help improve skin barrier function, reduce inflammation, and smooth fine lines and wrinkles over time. Plus, peptides are versatile and can be safely combined with other skincare ingredients, making them a gentle yet powerful option for achieving firmer, healthier-looking skin. There are so many peptides rich products we could recommend but one of our collective firm favourites when it comes to sensitive skin is Hubislab Premium Active Revival Essence. This beautiful silky soft bio serum is not only rich in peptides, but it’s formulated with hydrolysed collagen, asiaticoside and madecassoside too! Calming and soothing it delivers deep, long-lasting moisture and softer, smoother, younger looking skin! If you’re simply too scared to try retinol, or if you’ve given it a red hot go but found it too harsh, these alternatives can deliver real results without the redness and peeling! And if you aren’t totally averse to giving retinol a go but want to find a solution for your sensitive skin, we can’t recommend more highly the Pevonia Micro Retinol Line. It’s encapsulated and buffered with peptides and botanicals, making it a tolerable retinol option for sensitive skin types, you just need to transition slowly. For more information on Pevonia’s Micro Retinol range click here.
Fine lines, wrinkles and dark spots? Here’s how retinol can help

Fine lines, wrinkles and dark spots? Here’s how retinol can help

by Jo Boyden on Mar 21 2025
If you’re starting to notice fine lines and wrinkles forming on your face, or perhaps you’re more concerned about dark spots that just won’t fade? It might be time to introduce retinol into your skincare routine! This powerhouse ingredient that every beauty expert swears by, has earned its reputation for smoothing, brightening and rejuvenating skin like no other! But what makes retinol so effective and how can you use it and get the best results when it comes to your ageing skin? We’ve got the answers!   What is retinol and why is it more superior to other anti-ageing ingredients? Retinol is a powerhouse form of vitamin A and is one of the most researched and dermatologist approved ingredients for skin renewal! It works by accelerating cell turnover, stimulating collagen production, and regulating melanin to improve skin texture, firmness, and tone! This holy-grail ingredient penetrates deep into the skin, promoting faster regeneration and shedding of old, damaged cells and it’s this process that reduces fine lines, wrinkles and evens out skin tone (we are talking radically diminishing dark spots, redness and uneven pigmentation! Amazing right?) So, your skin will appear smoother and more youthful over time. But what makes retinol superior to other anti-ageing ingredients is its scientifically proven ability to target these multiple signs of ageing simultaneously. While ingredients like hyaluronic acid hydrate and peptides support collagen, retinol actively repairs and renews skin at a cellular level. Unlike antioxidants that primarily protect, retinol corrects visible ageing by boosting collagen and elastin, preventing future damage while reversing existing signs. Retinol also has the ability to enhance the effectiveness of other skincare ingredients, improving overall skin health. Genius!   How does retinol reduce fine lines and wrinkles? Retinol reduces fine lines and wrinkles by boosting cell turnover, stimulating collagen production, and improving skin texture. As we age, skin renewal slows down, leading to dullness and deeper lines. Retinol speeds up this process, helping to shed dead skin cells and reveal fresher, smoother skin. It also stimulates collagen and elastin production, which plumps the skin and improves firmness, reducing the appearance of wrinkles. Additionally, retinol refines skin texture by unclogging pores and evening out tone, making fine lines less noticeable. With consistent use, it helps maintain a youthful, radiant complexion while preventing new wrinkles from forming.     How does retinol reduce dark spots and uneven skin tone? Sun damage, acne scars, and hormonal changes can leave behind dark spots that linger for months (or even years) on your skin. The great news is retinol actually fades discolouration by accelerating cell turnover and inhibiting excess melanin production. It helps skin shed damaged, pigmented cells more quickly, revealing brighter, fresher skin underneath. Retinol also stimulates collagen production, which improves skin texture and smooths discolouration. By regulating melanin distribution, it fades hyperpigmentation, sun damage, and post-acne marks over time. Retinol also enhances the skin’s ability to absorb other brightening ingredients, making treatments like vitamin C even more effective. With consistent use, retinol creates a more even, radiant complexion, reducing the appearance of dark spots and promoting a healthy, youthful glow. When paired with sunscreen (a must!), it helps prevent new spots from forming too by regulating melanin production! Phew.   The best retinol products to help reduce fine lines and wrinkles and fade dark spots With so many retinol products on the market, it can be hard to know which to trust, that’s where we, the BC professionals can help! We highly recommend Pevonia’s Micro-Retinol® range. Every product in the range which includes Micro-Retinol® Foaming Cleanser, Micro-Retinol® Essential Toner, Micro-Retinol® Serum and Micro-Retinol® Essential Moisturiser utilizes a specialized technology to create Retinol micro-particles that get delivered deep into the epidermis. This means complete product absorption, no skin irritation, and immediate results! It’s a great, safe, and side-effect free alternative to using prescription Retinoic Acid. What’s more, every product in the Micro-Retinol® line contains a powerhouse trio of vitamin C, Vitamin E, and Micro-Retinol®! The addition of Vitamins C and E not only ensures Micro-Retinol®’s stability, but also that the skin’s nutrients and density are renewed and preserved! What’s more for the month of March 2025, when you purchase The Micro-Retinol® Essential Moisturiser, you’ll receive the matching Micro Retinol Cleanser and Lotion 50ml for FREE!   How to use retinol for maximum results and without irritation! If you haven’t tried retinol before, but this blog has convinced you, you should (you won’t look back I’m telling you!) you need to know how to introduce it into your skincare routine for the best results and without irritation! Because retinol is so potent it requires careful use, including moisturising and SPF! Here’s how to incorporate it into your routine: Start by introducing it slowly. Use it 2-3 times a week maximum at first, then increase as your skin adjusts (Remember a little goes a long way, and using too much too soon can lead to irritation). Start with a low concentration (0.25% – 0.5%) and work your way up. If you have sensitive skin, opt for micro-encapsulated or lower-strength retinol. Apply at night! Retinol makes your skin more sensitive to the sun so it’s best not to apply in the morning. Use a pea-sized amount to cover your face. Always follow with a moisturiser to keep skin hydrated and prevent dryness which retinol can sometimes cause. Retinol can be paired with other ingredients like Hyaluronic acid and Niacinamide. In fact, Hyaluronic acid and retinol are actually a dream team when it comes to skincare. While retinol addresses signs of ageing, hyaluronic acid provides a burst of essential hydration. The combination of both ingredients ensures skin remains moisturised, plump, and balanced. Never skip SPF during the day! Because retinol can make your skin sensitive to sunlight it’s essential to use SPF every single morning!   Believe me when I say retinol is a game-changer when it comes to fine lines, wrinkles, and dark spots. It’s the no.1 skincare essential besides SPF of course when it comes to preventative ageing. With regular use, it can dramatically improve your skin’s texture, tone, and overall youthfulness. The key is patience though, results don’t happen overnight, but give it anywhere from 3-6 weeks, and you’ll start to see smoother, brighter, and healthier-looking skin. Trust us, the wait is worth it!
Retinol and sensitive skin: Everything you need to know

Retinol and sensitive skin: Everything you need to know

by Jo Boyden on Feb 14 2025
If you’re wanting to try retinol since you’d heard it’s the anti-ageing powerhouse, but you’re worried about it exacerbating your sensitive skin, you are not alone. While this ingredient is renowned for its age defying and skin renewing abilities (and for very good reason!) it can also be too strong for those prone to redness, irritation or even dryness. But does this mean you should avoid retinol altogether? Definitely not! With the right approach, even sensitive skin types can reap the benefits of this skincare superstar! The key to retinol and your skin is choosing the right product – not every retinol product is created equal! You also need to know what to pair retinol with when it comes to your skincare routine to keep your skin happy! Whether you’re looking to fight fine lines, improve your skin’s texture, fade dark spots, or all of the above! Keep reading for everything you need to know about retinol and the best tips for sensitive skin.   What is retinol? Retinol is one of the most powerful proven ingredients in skincare, the “holy grail” when it comes to anti-ageing or so the beauty experts say! Retinol is actually a form of Vitamin A that works by speeding up cell turnover, essentially encouraging our skin to shed old, damaged cells and replace them with fresh healthy ones!   What makes retinol so effective? Retinol is a true multi-tasker! It has been proven to smooth fine lines, fade dark spots and improve skin texture. Its key benefits include; Retinol stimulates collagen production keeping skin firm and youthful. It unclogs pores, reducing breakouts, making it effective for acne-prone skin.   Retinol is a champion in tackling hyperpigmentation. It can lighten dark spots, sun spots, and even out skin tone by inhibiting the production of melanin, the pigment responsible for discolouration. It works deep within the skin to enhance radiance and even out tone.  Sounds amazing right? The catch? Retinol can be a little too powerful for some, especially those with sensitive or reactive skin.   Why does retinol irritate sensitive skin? Retinol’s fast-paced cell renewal can cause temporary dryness, redness, and flaking, a process often called the “retinol purge.” As it penetrates the skin, retinol stimulates collagen production and exfoliation, but for those with a weaker skin barrier, this process can be too harsh, causing irritation and inflammation. Retinol also reduces oil production, which can lead to dehydration, making sensitive skin feel even more fragile. But don’t worry! With the right formula and technique, you can build up your skin’s tolerance while still enjoying all of retinol’s anti-ageing and skin-smoothing benefits!   How to use retinol if you have sensitive skin 1. Choose the right retinol strength Not all retinol products are created equal. If you have sensitive skin, start with: Encapsulated retinol as it slowly releases into the skin, reducing irritation. Low-strength retinol gentle enough to introduce gradually. 2. Start slow because less really is more Think of retinol like a workout for your skin, you don’t start with heavy weights on day one! Apply a pea-sized amount just 1-2 times a week at first. If your skin tolerates it slowly increase frequency. 3. Apply retinol at night Unfortunately, when it comes to retinol, exposure to sunlight can significantly degrade its effectiveness making it less potent, this is because UV rays break down the retinol molecule rendering it less able to work on your skin. More importantly retinol makes the skin more sensitive to sunlight increasing the risk of redness, irritation and sun damage. As previously mentioned, retinol works by accelerating cell turnover, which means fresh new skin cells are more exposed and vulnerable to UV rays. Therefore, it's best to apply retinol at night! By doing so the ingredient can go to work undisturbed, maximizing its benefits and promoting skin repair while you sleep! 3. Always use a moisturiser Hydration is key to reducing irritation. If it’s just a retinol cream you are using, apply it to your skin at night and use a nourishing moisturiser rich in hyaluronic acid in the morning. If it’s a just retinol serum you’re looking to apply, make sure you use a good moisturiser both morning and night. By applying a thin layer of moisturiser before and after your retinol serum will help buffer its potency while still delivering results. 4. Never skip SPF! Retinol makes your skin more sensitive to the sun, so daily broad-spectrum SPF 30+ is non-negotiable. Without it, you risk undoing all the benefits by exposing fresh skin to UV damage. 5. Watch for signs of overuse If you notice excessive peeling, stinging, or irritation, take a break and focus on repairing your skin barrier with ceramides, niacinamide, and hydrating serums.   How long does retinol take to work? Results from retinol skincare can vary. Some people may notice improvements in a few weeks, days even, while others might take a couple of months. Generally, it takes at least 12 weeks to see significant changes in terms of reduced fine lines, improved texture, and diminished dark spots. Consistency is key, and it's crucial to be patient as the benefits of retinol often accumulate over time. Once you see results you will never look back!   What ingredients can you pair with retinol without irritation? To minimise irritation while using retinol, pair it with hydrating and soothing ingredients that strengthen the skin barrier. Some great options include: Hyaluronic Acid – Deeply hydrates and prevents drynessNiacinamide – Calms redness, reduces sensitivity, and strengthens the skin barrierCeramides – Restore moisture and reinforce skin’s protective barrierPeptides – Support collagen production and repair the skinSqualane – Provides lightweight hydration without clogging poresCentella Asiatica (Cica) – Soothes inflammation and promotes healingAloe Vera – Hydrates and reduces irritation Avoid pairing retinol with strong exfoliants (AHAs, BHAs) to prevent excessive irritation.   The best retinol products for sensitive skin We highly recommend Pevonia’s Micro-Retinol® range. What’s more, every product in the Micro-Retinol® line contains a powerhouse trio of carefully combined Vitamin C, Vitamin E, and Micro-Retinol®! The addition of Vitamin C and E not only ensures Micro-Retinol®’s stability, but also that the skin’s nutrients and density are renewed and preserved!   Just remember with a little patience and the right approach, your skin will thank you for introducing this anti-ageing wonder ingredient into your skincare routine.

Sleep (and I’m talking quality 7 – 9 hours a night minimum) is essential! (lack of sleep will only pronounce dark circles and puffiness more). Believe it or not, what you eat can affect your eyes so try to eat a diet rich in antioxidants and omega-3s, nourish the skin and always wear your sunglasses to protect your eyes from UV damage! How to treat adult acne: The skincare line that actually works

by Jo Boyden on Jan 24 2025
Find yourself suddenly dealing with adult acne? The unexpected breakouts, stubborn spots, irritated skin? Believe me when I say you are not alone! Here at BC we get customers asking us why they might be suffering from acne in their 40’s and beyond all the time as well as the best solutions. Well, we can’t recommend enough a new (tried-and-tested by us) collection from Pevonia that tackles adult acne head-on while being kind to your skin! Whether your breakouts are stress-related, hormonal, or perhaps genetic, this routine will make a huge difference to your skin and your confidence! Cue Pevonia’s ProCorrective Line, a game-changing solution for tackling adult acne at its root!   Firstly, why are you suffering from adult acne? Adult acne can be incredibly frustrating, especially when you thought breakouts were a thing of the past! Unlike teenage breakouts though, adult acne often stems from a combination of factors from hormone changes to stress to genetics to pollution and more! Hormonal fluctuations often play a big part in adult acne though, whether it be during menstruation, pregnancy, perimenopause or menopause, this is because it can increase oil production leading to clogged pores which can trigger breakouts. Androgens, particularly testosterone, stimulate oil glands, worsening breakouts. These hormonal shifts also increase inflammation and disrupt the skin's barrier, making it more prone to bacterial overgrowth and persistent blemishes! Stress, which many of us adults can feel on a daily basis! Elevates cortisol levels, stimulating oil glands and worsening acne. And then there are the environmental factors like pollution or bacteria from touching your face which may clog pores, while certain skincare or makeup products can exacerbate the issue. Unfortunately what we eat and drink can also play a role, with high-glycemic foods and dairy potentially contributing! And then of course there are genetics (thanks parents!) and underlying medical conditions, such as hormonal imbalances or PCOS which can further increase the likelihood of adult acne. Eek!   Why Choose the Pevonia ProCorrective Line? Whatever your reason for suffering from adult acne, following a targeted skincare routine can make all the difference. And we might indeed be biased but Pevonia’s ProCorrective is one of the best targeted adult acne lines on the market especially when it comes to hormonal acne! 12 steps to minimise large pores: Your ultimate guide

12 steps to minimise large pores: Your ultimate guide

by Jo Boyden on Dec 06 2024
If you’re one of the many blessed with oily skin, you might find your struggling with large pores too, especially as the weather is heating up and oil production can go into overdrive! That said, large pores are one of the most common (and searched) skin concerns affecting people of all ages and skin types (not just oily skin). They can make your skin appear uneven, textured, or oily, leaving many of us wondering what exactly is causing them and how we can reduce their size stat! Keep reading as we reveal the reasons behind your large pores and, more importantly, how you can minimize their appearance with targeted products and expert tips too!   So, why do you have large pores? Believe it or not there are actually many reasons your pores might be a lot larger than you’d like! Excess oil production Pores are essential for releasing oil (sebum) to keep your skin moisturised. However, overactive sebaceous glands can cause pores to stretch, making them appear larger. Oily skin types are particularly prone to this issue. Clogged pores When oil mixes with dirt, makeup, and dead skin cells, it can clog pores, causing them to expand. This can lead to blackheads and a bumpy skin texture Loss of collagen and elastin As you age, your skin loses collagen and elastin, which are responsible for keeping it firm and tight. With less support, pores may appear more prominent. Sun damage Prolonged exposure to UV rays breaks down collagen and thickens the skin, stretching out pores over time. Genetics Yes you can thank your parents for those unruly large pores of yours! Your skin type and pore size are largely determined by your genetics. If your family has visible pores, chances are you will too. Improper skincare routine Using the wrong skincare products or skipping essential steps like cleansing can exacerbate the appearance of enlarged pores.   How to minimize large pores While you can’t actually change your pore size completely (thanks to genetics), you can take steps to minimize their appearance and achieve a smoother, healthier-looking complexion; 1. Cleanse thoroughly Keeping your pores clean really is the first step to minimising their appearance. This means using a gentle cleanser specific to your skin type both morning and night to effectively remove oil, dirt, sunscreen and makeup. If your skin is combination to oily, it’s best to opt for gel or foaming cleaners, if your skin tends to be on the sensitive side, there are some amazing sensitive skin cream cleansers for that too! Specific ingredients will make a big difference to the appearance of your pore size too. Cleansers formulated with AHA’s (Alpha Hydroxy Acids) such as Citric Acid, Glycolic Acid and Lactic Acid, and/or BHA’s (Beta Hydroxy Acids) such as Salicylic acid can make all the difference! While all four acids exfoliate on a cellular level, Glycolic, Citric and Lactic works on a more surface level to brighten and smooth your skin, whereas Salicylic Acid penetrates much deeper to effectively remove dead skin cells clogged in pores. We highly recommend Vie Collection Cleansing Gel with Glycolic, Lactic and Salicylic Acids. This foaming cleansing gel combines glycolic, lactic and salicylic acids to stimulate cellular activity, break the intercellular glue between dead cells and thoroughly cleanse skin. Remember harsh cleansers can strip your skin of its natural oils, causing your pores to become larger so do consider which cleaner is right for your skin!   2. Exfoliate Regularly When it comes to large pores, exfoliation is paramount! You want to ensure pores are unclogged to prevent further stretching, and exfoliating effectively removes dead skin cells and prevents pore-clogging buildup. Try Pure Balance Papaya Enzyme Peeling Wash. This plant enzyme-based deep cleanser formulated with natural papaya extract dissolves easily in cold water and eliminates dead skin cells without irritation, breaking down proteins to produce peptone, which washes away dirt and sebum within the pores without irritation. Tip: Exfoliate 1–3 times per week based on your skin type.   3. Incorporate retinol into your routine Believe me when I say retinol is a game-changer for pore refinement. A good retinol serum will boost cell turnover and collagen production, which tightens the skin around pores. Just remember though if you haven’t used retinol before you’ll want to introduce it slowly and at night to avoid any irritation. For more information on retinol click here.   4. Use Clay Masks Who doesn’t love a good mask and clay masks are no exception. In fact clay masks will absorb excess oil and draw out impurities from pores when applied. For a real deep clean use your clay mask once or twice a week. And look for masks that specifically have kaolin or bentonite clay. We love Phytomer CityLife Radiance Reviving Mask  This unique cream-mousse mask instantly counters dehydration, signs of fatigue, dark spots and enlarged pores. Combining 100% natural red and white clays, blue microalgae, red algae and a comprehensive depolluting complex of 3 marine sugars, it reveals luminosity, radiance and refined pores after just one application!   5. Hydrate Wisely Dehydrated skin can overcompensate by producing more oil, in turn worsening the appearance of your pores! Be sure to use lightweight, non-comedogenic moisturisers rich in hyaluronic acid, not heavy, greasy creams that could potentially clog your pores. We love: Hubislab Moisture Max Hydro Cream. It’s a powerful, fast-acting moisturiser that quickly locks in hydration while soothing skin. Formulated with a unique blend of hyaluronic compounds that work to form a protective moisture barrier, its lightweight texture provides a primer-like finish without any greasiness! 6. Protect Your Skin with Sunscreen UV damage breaks down collagen and makes pores look larger so you need to be armed with a good broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher and apply every single morning. Try to minimise sun exposure too and always wear a hat!   7. Use pore-minimizing products As well as your hydrating moisturiser and retinol serum, we recommend you invest in products specifically designed to refine pores too like Pevonia’s Age Correction Micro-Pores Refine Cream. it’s a mattifying treatment cream that minimizes pores by combining cutting-edge natural actives like red clover extract and retinol to regulate oil production and refine skin texture. This lightweight cream also hydrates while delivering antioxidants, leaving your skin smoother, balanced, and visibly clearer with regular use. 8. Avoid squeezing or picking pimples from clogged pores It’s tempting to squeeze clogged pores, but this can damage the skin and make pores appear larger. Use proper skincare tools or visit a professional for extractions.   9. Use a primer before applying makeup A good primer will become your lifeline if you are prone to enlarged pores. Not only will it stop your foundation from sliding off your face quite literally, it’ll keep your base smooth while reducing the appearance of pores (and fine lines!) if you are a sufferer of oily skin and pores on the, let’s say slightly larger side! Our recommended go-to is the ELES Pore Perfecting Face Primer. It’s oil-free (of course), perfectly lightweight and seems to combat shine almost instantly. It contains a natural Dermat Complex which enables it to absorb oil and effectively reduce pore size in one hit.   10. Choose your makeup wisely Unfortunately, our makeup can make pores seem bigger than they actually are. Products like our powders and foundation can settle into our pores over the course of the day, making them appear larger, so your best bet because, let’s face it we aren’t going to want to forego our miraculous makeup, is opt for mineral products! A huge benefit of using mineral makeup is that it’s non-comedogenic, meaning it won’t clog your pores! We love ELES Cosmetics range of mineral formulations. Try the best-selling Liquid Powder Mineral Foundation or if you’re a lover of powder foundations we highly recommend the Mineral Powder Foundation.   11. Give professional treatments a go if you are really concerned about your pore size, professional in-salon treatments can deliver dramatic results. Treatments such as chemical peels exfoliate intensively and deeply to unclog and refine pores. Microneedling boosts collagen production for firmer, smoother skin. And laser therapy reduces oil production and tightens skin.   12. Be Consistent Achieving smoother skin takes time. Stick to a routine and give products time to work, remember consistency is key to long-term improvement!   While you can’t change your pore size, you can control how they look by keeping them clean, unclogged, and supported with the right skincare routine. With a mix of at-home care and professional treatments, your pores can go from prominent to practically invisible.
