What are AHAs?

AHA stands for alpha hydroxy acid, a group of acids found naturally in various fruits, milk and sugar cane. Alpha hydroxy acid products use these natural acids to exfoliate and rejuvenate the skin, breaking down the upper layer of skin to promote faster skin cell turnover. Should you use AHAs in the morning or at night?

Alpha hydroxy acid products can be applied whenever you prefer, however AHAs can increase your skin’s sensitivity to the sun, so if you use skincare formulated with glycolic, lactic and citric acids in the morning, always make sure you follow with a broad spectrum sunscreen of SPF 30+ to protect your skin. Some people prefer to apply AHA-rich products at night for this reason.

Can you use AHA and retinol together?

While both ingredients benefit the skin, they should not be used together. Retinol is a powerful vitamin A derivative that helps reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
