double cleansing

Why double cleansing is a skincare game-changer

by Jo Boyden on May 31 2024
Have you ever wondered how K-beauty devotees achieve their flawless, radiant skin? What is it they’re doing that you don’t do too? Well their secret is double cleansing! A transformative skincare ritual that promises deep cleansing and that coveted luminous glow!Ready to transform your complexion? Keep reading to discover why this K-beauty trend could be the game-changer your skincare routine really needs! What is double cleansing?Environmental pollutants, makeup, sebum and the SPF in your sunscreen means that cleansing your face with a single cleanser does not always rid your skin of all the impurities that it’s exposed to throughout the day. Two cleansers however do! Double cleansing is a two-step skincare ritual (and k-beauty trend) that goes beyond traditional cleansing. It involves using two different types of cleansers consecutively, ensuring every trace of makeup, sunscreen, dirt and impurities are thoroughly removed from your face, leaving your complexion fresh and prepped for hydration. The popular technique originated from Korean skincare routines, such as the infamous glass skin trend, but has gained popularity worldwide for its effectiveness in achieving clean, clear, and radiant skin.Korean beauty followers swear by the double cleansing method and so do we!What products do you use for double cleansing? The double cleansing process typically consists of two steps: Oil based cleanser The first step involves using an oil-based cleanser to dissolve oil-based impurities such as makeup, sunscreen, and excess sebum on the skin's surface. Oil-based cleansers are effective at breaking down these impurities without stripping the skin of its natural oils. Water based cleanser The second step involves using a water-based cleanser to remove any remaining residue and thoroughly cleanse the skin. Water-based cleansers penetrate deep into the pores to remove water-based impurities such as sweat, dirt, and environmental pollutants.By incorporating both oil-based and water-based cleansers into your skincare routine, you are providing your skin with a thorough deep cleanse, leaving it clean, refreshed and perfectly balanced. Our cleanser recommendations:Micellar waterHubislab Pure Balance Micellar Gentle Lip & Eye Remover. Soothing and deeply nourishing it effectively removes makeup residue while soothing irritated skin around the eyes and lips.Cleansing GelHubislab Pure Balance Refreshing Cleansing Gel. Formulated with natural surfactants extracted from corn, coconut, and palm kernel oils, this refreshing cleansing gel works to remove sebum and dead skin cells, while rebalancing the skin’s pH without irritationCleansing FoamHubislab Moisture Max Cleansing Foam – this cleanser not only gently removes impurities while preventing dryness it also provides skin with long lasting hydration thanks to its nourishing formulation of three types of hyaluronic acid, patented ingredient AQUAXYL, and sodium PCA. Skin is rendered smooth and supple after every wash. Cleansing milk Hubislab Pure Balance Refreshing Cleansing MilkFormulated with hyaluronic acid and lactic acid, this mild, moisturising cleanser completely removes makeup residue, dirt and grime while nourishing and repairing the skin.Ideal for all skin types, but designed specifically for skin made sensitive by over frequent face washing, use of chemical substances and antiseptics, and/or dermatological treatments, it not only cleanses but also strengthens damaged skin.Cleansing PeelHubislab Pure Balance Papaya Enzyme Peeling Wash - this plant enzyme-based deep cleanser formulated with natural papaya extract dissolves easily in cold water and eliminates dead skin cells without irritation, breaking down proteins to produce peptone, which washes away dirt and sebum within the pores without irritation. Is double cleansing right for you?If you wear makeup and sunscreen daily, deal with dull skin, or are prone to oily skin, blemishes and breakouts, double cleansing is for you! It will help prevent clogged pores, breakouts, and dullness and render skin radiant! Can you double cleanse with the same cleanser? While it's not necessary to use two different cleansers for double cleansing, using two different types of cleansers is actually recommended since it can provide more comprehensive cleansing benefits. Oil-based cleansers are effective at breaking down makeup, sunscreen, and excess sebum on the skin's surface, while water-based cleansers help to remove water-based impurities and provide a deeper cleanse. If you suffer from sensitive skin and are worried about irritation when it comes to using two different cleansers, you can still achieve a form of double cleansing by using the same cleanser twice. In this case, you would apply the cleanser to dry skin for the first cleanse to dissolve makeup and impurities, then rinse and repeat the process for the second cleanse to ensure a thorough cleanse of the skin. While using the same cleanser twice may not provide the same comprehensive cleansing benefits as using two different types of cleansers, it can still help remove surface impurities and leave the skin feeling clean and refreshed. Ultimately, the most important thing is to choose a cleanser that suits your skin type and concerns.Do you need to double cleanse twice a day?The frequency of double cleansing in Korean skincare routines can vary depending on individual preferences, lifestyle, and skin type. While some may choose to double cleanse twice a day, both in the morning and evening, others may opt for double cleansing only once a day, typically in the evening to thoroughly remove the days makeup dirt and impurities.Just be sure not to over cleanse! Over-cleansing in the morning can result in the destruction of the skin’s barrier function.

12 beauty tips these celebrities swear by

12 beauty tips these celebrities swear by

by Jo Boyden on May 18 2024
Ever wondered how your favourite celebrities manage to defy the ageing process and maintain their flawless complexion year after year? While genetics may play a role, the secrets to their youthful, glowing skin often lie in carefully curated skincare routines and expert advice passed down from generation to generation. From A-list actors to supermodels gracing the runway, keep reading as we uncover the top beauty tips these celebrities swear by, 12 simple strategies you and I are already likely doing daily, just not religiously like them! Do not skimp on the amount of water you drink "I swear by hydration. Drinking plenty of water keeps my skin looking plump and youthful." - Jennifer Aniston Keeping yourself hydrated both inside and out is one of the most essential tips when it comes to your skin. This is because water is vital for maintaining skin health and youthfulness. It hydrates the skin from within promoting elasticity and plumpness while reducing the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines. Hydration also supports skin cell function, collagen production, and repair processes. Additionally, water helps flush out toxins, preventing breakouts and promoting clear skin. By strengthening the skin's natural barrier, water protects against environmental damage and maintains an even skin tone. Ultimately, staying hydrated is essential for preserving the youthful appearance and vitality of our skin! Try to drink a minimum of 8 glasses of water a day and for that much needed added nourishment make sure you always moisturise morning and night! We recommend using formulations rich in hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid attracts and retains moisture, plumping and hydrating the skin. In fact the molecules can hold 1,000 times its weight in water! This helps to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, leaving the skin smooth, supple, and youthful. We are obsessed with the Pevonia Hyaluronic Acid Hydra Serum and Hyaluronic acid Hydra Mist! Do things every day that will help you de-stress “I think that anything you can do to remove stress will give you a better glow. That’s the number one answer…" Cate Blanchett Stress is an inevitable part of life, but its impact doesn’t just affect our mood, it can significantly affect the health and appearance ofour skin too! Stress triggers the release of cortisol, a hormone that can throw our skin out of whack. It can cause the increase of oil production, leading to clogged pores and breakouts. It also has the ability tobreak down collagen and elastin, causing wrinkles and sagging. Plus, stress can make skin conditions like eczema and psoriasis flare up, making our skin red, itchy, and inflamed. All these things combined can leave our complexion looking dull and tired, far from the youthful glow so many celebrities promote! That's why it's important to find ways to de-stress and take care of our skin. Whether it's through deep breathing, yoga, meditation, listening to music, or simply some self-care time, giving ourselves a break can help keep our skin looking its glowing best! Eat a diet rich in Antioxidants “I eat lots of berries; they’re full of antioxidants" - Olivia Palermo Antioxidants can do wonders for our skin! And it’s true, a rich source comes from berries! Antioxidants help fight off free radicals, which are harmful molecules that can damage our skin cells and accelerate ageing. Berries like blueberries, strawberries, and raspberries are packed with antioxidants like vitamin C and polyphenols, which can help protect our skin from environmental damage, reduce inflammation, and promote a brighter, more youthful complexion. Incorporating these colourful fruits into our diet can nourish our skin from the inside out, leaving it looking radiant and healthy. We also love antioxidant rich skincare too! Here are three of our favourites; Naturys Anti-Age Antioxidant Facial Toner, Pevonia Vitamin C Complex and Pevonia’s Micro-Retinol Essential Moisturiser Always remove makeup before bed! "I've never gone to bed without washing my face. Never in my life. Even if I'm sick, tired — heck, even if I was drunk! I might forget to take off the dress, the shoes, and the jewellery, but not the makeup. It's second nature." - Salma Hayek Not washing your face before bed can have detrimental effects on your skin. Throughout the day, dirt, oil, and environmental pollutants accumulate on our skin's surface, clogging pores and leading to breakouts. By neglecting to cleanse your face at night, these impurities remain trapped, causing inflammation and acne. Additionally, makeup left on overnight can further exacerbate these issues, as it can mix with sweat and bacteria, increasing the risk of infections and irritation. Not cleansing your face before bed also disrupts the skin's natural renewal process, hindering its ability to repair and regenerate overnight! This can result in dullness and premature ageing! So, no matter how tired or tipsy you might be, get cleansing before hitting the hay! For hassle free cleansing use an all-rounder makeup remover like Phytomer’s Doux Contour Eye and Lip Waterproof Makeup Remover. It’s a fantastic and effectively melts away makeup and grime with minimum effort! Combining the effectiveness of an oil (a trio of oils in fact) and the gentleness of a lotion, this ultra-hydrating makeup remover, eradicates even the most stubborn of lips and eye makeup fast! Always wear sunscreen "Sunscreen, every single day, rain or shine. It's the best anti-ageing product out there." - Priyanka Chopra And we 100% agree! Sunscreen is hands down the no.1 defence against premature ageing! The harmful UV rays from the sun can cause a multitude of skin issues, including wrinkles, fine lines, sunspots, and sagging skin. By wearing sunscreen daily, you can protect your skin from these damaging effects and prevent premature ageing. UV radiation damages the skin's collagen and elastin fibres, leading to loss of elasticity and firmness, which are key contributors to aging skin. Additionally, UV exposure can result in hyperpigmentation, uneven skin tone, and the formation of wrinkles and fine lines. Using a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher helps shield the skin from both UVA and UVB rays, which are responsible for different types of damage. UVA rays penetrate deep into the skin and contribute to premature aging, while UVB rays primarily cause sunburns. Consistently wearing sunscreen, even on cloudy days or during the winter months, is essential for maintaining youthful-looking skin and protecting against the harmful effects of UV radiation. Incorporating sunscreen into your daily skincare routine is one of the best ways to prevent premature aging and maintain healthy, radiant skin for years to come. We love Medicalia – Sunscreen SPF 40 with Blue Light Shield. You might be a little reluctant to wear your sunscreen dailybecause quite frankly its smell and greasy texture puts you off, but that’s because you haven’t found a sunscreen that works for you! This one I promise you are going to love! It’s perfectly lightweight and does not leave a white case or greasy residue behind! It contains an exclusive mineral formula to shield skin from harmful sun rays, blue light damage and pollution! And what’s more, the formula is reef-safe and works for all skin types and tones too! Use eye cream daily “Never skip eye cream. It’s my secret weapon against fine lines and puffiness.” Sandra Bullock Your eyes are the most delicate area on your face and the first area to really age you! A good eye cream really can be game-changing when it comes to the pursuit of longer lasting youthful skin! Exfoliation is key “I start every day by exfoliating my face, something I’ve done for the past 40 years. I feel like it’s really contributed to my skin feeling fresh and smooth. Forty years ago, I read an article that said men always look five years younger than women who are their same age. They contributed that to them shaving every day, and the daily exfoliating with shaving making their skin look younger. I was like, I’m not going to let them get away with that!" Christie Brinkley Exfoliation is definitely key when it comes to skin looking younger! After all exfoliation promotes cell turnover, improving skin texture, and enhancing radiance. It also unclogs pores preventing breakouts while helping other products in your skincare routine absorb more effectively into skin. Just remember not every skin type can tolerate daily exfoliation and it depends on the exfoliator you use too! Its best to start slowly by exfoliating once or twice a week and if skin tends to be a little sensitive opt for fruit enzyme exfoliators which won’t irritate skin. Over-exfoliating or using harsh scrubs can strip the skin of its natural oils and lead to inflammation, redness, and sensitivity. Try incorporating facial massage into your daily skincare routine “Facial massages to boost blood flow and keep your skin looking fresh.” - Julia Roberts We couldn’t agree more! Facial massage offers a multitude of benefits for the skin, we just need to find the time to incorporate it into our day! Firstly, facial massage promotes improved circulation, delivering oxygen and essential nutrients to the skin while removing toxins. This enhanced blood flow results in a brighter, more radiant complexion, as well as improved skin tone and texture! Facial massage also stimulates the lymphatic syst

Mum and me spa-at-home tips

by Jo Boyden on May 11 2024
Looking for something special to do with your little one (or mum!) this Mother’s Day? Or any day for that matter! Instead of heading out and about why not create a mini spa at home? In the hustle and bustle of daily life, finding time to relax, indulge and practice self-care can be few and far between especially if you have young children at home! However, incorporating skincare pampering into quality time with your loved ones can offer a fun and unique opportunity to bond while taking care of yourself too!Read on as we talk tips to combine your skincare spa time with fun activities that involve your children (or your mum) too! Create a sensory experience Start off your spa routine by creating a sensory experience. Incorporate scented candles, soothing music and calming essential oils.Invite your children to participate by selecting their favourite scents and assisting with setting up the ambiance. Engaging their senses will make the experience more enjoyable for everyone and create a serene atmosphere perfect for relaxation. Prepare your skin Now you’ve set the scene, it’s time to start prepping for some pampering. Use a headband or hair tie to ensure your hair is pulled back from your face. Make sure your neck is accessible, and we recommend wearing a robe to get you in the spa spirit! Time for a facial Start your spa time with a mini facial!Cleanse - begin by cleansing your skin. Teaching children from an early age the importance of cleaning their face will do wonders for their skin later on. Just make sure you use products that are age and skin type appropriate!Apply a small quantity of cleanser over face and neck; work it with fingertips for a good 20-30 seconds. Remove with a washcloth or micro-fibre cloth wet with warm water. Pat dry with a clean towel.Exfoliate - next, it’s time to gently exfoliate your skin to remove all those dead skin cells and any additional toxins and debris remaining on the skin. NB. Make sure you skip this step for younger children.Apply a small quantity (about the size of a grape) of exfoliator onto your face and neck and work with wet fingertips for a few minutes. We highly recommend the Phytomer Vegetal Exfoliant with natural enzymes. It’s a seriously soft, silky and subtly scented exfoliant perfect for all skin types even those who suffer from sensitive skin, and it effectively eliminates impurities by gently removing dead skin cells with natural enzymes (so no scrubbing or irritating the skin whatsoever!)Now rinse face with warm water and pat dry with a towel. Enjoy the results as your skin resurfaces smoother, softer and crystal clean every time! Heaven.DIY Face Masks - now it’s time for the fun part! You can either get creative in the kitchen and whip up some nourishing DIY face masks using natural ingredients in your fridge and pantry like yogurt, honey and avocado or use a face mask ready to go!With so many face masks to select from, it’s ideal to choose the one that’ll best suit your skin on the day of the facial. For the best face masks for every skin type and concern click here.Once chosen, all you have to do is apply a thin layer onto your face and neck and leave on for 10-15 minutes. While you’re waiting why not apply cucumbers to your eyes! Your children will love this, and your eyes will thank you for it too. The cooling effect of the cucumber will soothe and relax the skin. Cucumbers are also rich in vitamin C and K, which can provide a brightening effect, minimize dark under eye circles, and help ward off free radical damage. When it's time to remove your mask, use a washcloth or micro-fibre cloth wet with cool water. Pat dry with a clean towel. Have fun with massage Now it’s time to moisturise your skin with your chosen moisturiser and get massaging your face!Facial massage has so many benefits! From relieving stress to boosting circulation. To learn more about the benefits click here.To take your skin to the next level you could try incorporating a gemstone facial roller into the massage routine too! My children find this part fun as they love learning about the benefits of the roller and how cooling it feels on the face!Want to know more about gemstone rollers and their many benefits yourself click here. Give each other a mini makeover Now that the facial component is complete, why not have fun and give each other a mini makeover! Just be sure to use makeup safe for all skin types including young children. We recommend mineral makeup as it's skin safe and doesn’t clog pores. Enjoy mini mani-pedis Treat yourselves to a mini mani-pedi session at home, complete with colourful nail polish and luxurious hand and foot creams.Let your children choose their favourite nail polish colour and take turns painting each other’s nails. Finish with some relaxation exercises Why not add a little relaxion and meditation into your spa time! You can teach your children the importance of relaxation and mindfulness by incorporating simple relaxation exercises into your spa time.Practice deep breathing techniques, gentle stretching or guided meditation together to help calm the mind and body. Not only will this promote relaxation and stress relief for both you and your kids, but it will also instill valuable self-care habits from a young age. Combining your skincare routine with quality spa-time with your children is a wonderful way to nurture your bond while taking care of yourself. By involving your children in your skincare routine and making it a fun and interactive experience, you can create lasting memories and teach them the importance of self-care and relaxation too.

Peptides

Peptides: How this ingredient is transforming skincare

by Jo Boyden on May 03 2024
You’ve probably heard about Peptides, another key ingredient we are told to incorporate into our everyday skincare routine! But when we are already slathering on Vitamin C, Retinol, Collagen, Niacinamide (and more!) in our quest to defy premature ageing and achieve healthy, glowing skin, why are peptides so essential too? Keep reading as we uncover all there is to know about peptides and how these unsung heroes can help to transform your complexion. Firstly though, what are peptides?Hailed as the key to achieving, youthful, radiant skin, peptides are short chains of amino acids, the building blocks of proteins, including collagen, elastin and keratin, crucial for maintaining skin structure and elasticity. What do peptides do for your skin? These small but mighty molecules are gaining recognition for their remarkable ability to address various signs of ageing, making them a coveted ingredient in skincare formulations. As we age, our production of collagen, elastin and keratin decline, leading to fine lines, wrinkles and sagging skin. Peptides work by signalling the skin to produce more of these proteins replenishing what’s lost and in turn helping to restore a more youthful complexion! Clever stuff hey?Key benefits of peptides in skincare: Peptides boost collagen production Peptides stimulate collagen synthesis, promoting firmer, plumper skin and reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Peptides enhance skin elasticity By supporting elastin production, peptides help improve skin elasticity, leading to a smoother and more youthful-looking complexion. Peptides improve skin texture Peptides can help refine skin texture, minimizing the appearance of pores and promoting a smoother, more even skin tone. Peptides hydrate and nourish Some peptides have moisturising properties, helping to hydrate the skin and maintain its barrier function, preventing moisture loss and enhancing overall skin health. Peptides protect against environmental damage Certain peptides have antioxidant properties, defending the skin against free radicals and environmental stressors, which can accelerate skin ageing. How to incorporate peptides into your skincare routineLook for skincare products containing peptides, such as serums, moisturisers, and eye creams. These products are formulated to deliver peptides directly to the skin, maximizing their effectiveness. Incorporate them into your daily skincare routine, applying them after cleansing and toning, and before moisturising. Consistency is key to seeing visible results, so use peptide-rich products regularly to reap their full benefits. Can you layer peptides with vitamin c and other key ingredients?Overall, peptides work well with other key skincare ingredients including vitamin c, niacinamide, retinol, antioxidants and hyaluronic acid, and can generally be layered with them to address multiple skin concerns and achieve optimal results. However, layering peptides with AHAs (alpha hydroxy acids) is not advisable as the AHAs will actually make the peptides work less efficiently. Are peptides good for all skin types including sensitive skin?Peptides can be beneficial for all skin types, including sensitive skin, when used in appropriate formulations and concentrations. Since peptides are generally gentle and well-tolerated by most skin types, they are less likely to cause irritation or sensitivity reactions. Peptides can offer valuable benefits for sensitive skin, such as improving hydration, enhancing skin barrier function, and promoting a more youthful complexion. However, it's essential to choose peptide products that are specifically formulated for sensitive skin and free from potential irritants such as fragrances, dyes, and harsh preservatives. The peptide skincare products we are loving:Naturys Anti-Age Multi-Peptide Serum - Formulated with hyaluronic acid, this product packs a punch when it comes to hydration but thanks to its additional combination of nourishing and anti-ageing ingredients including an array of peptides and vitamin C, it leaves your skin softer, smoother and visibly radiant too. Oh and its organic and vegan – we love that!HubisLab Premium Active Eternal Face & Eye Cream - I not only personally love how this product is a 2-in-1 – your moisturiser and your eye cream, but I also love how baby soft my skin is these days after religiously using it! It’s nourishing but light and has definitely made a difference to not only my face but to the delicate area around my eyes too! What’s more, it’s packed with a plethora of goodies from of course peptides to Hyaluronic acid and Botulinum-derived component, an Ingredient that is similar to Botox! No wonder the wrinkles around my eyes have practically disappeared!ELES Blue Light Radiant BB Cream. This outstanding BB Cream might be classed as makeup, but it’s packed with a powerhouse of skincare goodies including peptides, vitamin c, niacinamide, hyaluronic acid, and vitamin e!Multi-tasking it protects, primes, tints, nourishes, evens out skin tone and helps to strengthen skin and its game-changing formula shields skin from not only from damaged UV rays but blue light from our devices too!Not just another BB Cream, this BB Cream will improve your skin's elasticity while softening the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and will leave skin with a long-lasting radiant glow every time you apply. It's brilliant!By incorporating peptide-rich skincare products into your routine, you can rejuvenate and revitalize your complexion, revealing a smoother, firmer, and more radiant appearance.

Worried about sagging skin? The best tips to firm your face

by Jo Boyden on May 03 2024
Ageing. We all know it’s inevitable, but no one wants to wake up one day and find gravity playing tricks on their face! Sadly though, sagging skin, fine lines and wrinkles are all a natural part of the ageing process, but this doesn't mean we can’t do something to help slow down or improve their appearance. With the right preventive measures and skincare routine, you can prevent your skin from sagging prematurely and maintain firm and youthful-looking skin for years to come. Keep reading as we discuss the best tips for preventing sagging skin and achieving a more lifted, toned complexion. Firstly though what is sagging skin on the face?Sagging skin on the face refers to the loss of firmness and elasticity in the skin, leading to a drooping or sagging appearance. It occurs when the skin's supportive structures weaken over time. As a result, the skin loses its ability to bounce back, causing it to sag or droop, particularly in areas such as the cheeks, jawline, and neck. What causes sagging skin? You could be asking yourself why is your face suddenly sagging? Sagging skin on the face is actually caused by multiple factors. These include; Loss of Collagen and Elastin One of the main contributors to skin sagging is the decrease in the production of collagen and elastin, responsible for skin elasticity and firmness. As we age, our collagen and elastin levels decline and as a result the skin loses its ability to bounce back, resulting in sagging and drooping.Decreased skin hydrationHydration plays a crucial role in maintaining the plumpness and suppleness of the skin. With age, the skin's ability to retain moisture diminishes, resulting in dryness and dehydration. Dehydrated skin is more prone to sagging and wrinkles, as it lacks the necessary moisture to maintain its elasticity.Reduction in Facial Fat and Muscle ToneAs we age, the fat pads in our face begin to weaken, causing the skin to lose volume and support. Additionally, weakening of the facial muscles over time can contribute to sagging and drooping of facial tissues. These changes in fat distribution and muscle tone can result in a loss of facial contour and definition.UV and Blue Light damageProlonged exposure to UV rays from the sun and Blue Light damage from our devices accelerates the breakdown of collagen and elastin fibres in the skin. UV and Blue Light damage weakens the skin's structural support, leading to premature ageing signs such as sagging, wrinkles, and fine lines.Lifestyle FactorsCertain lifestyle habits, such as smoking, poor nutrition, and excessive alcohol consumption, can contribute to the breakdown of collagen and elastin in the skin. Smoking, in particular, has been linked to accelerated skin ageing and sagging due to its detrimental effects on blood circulation and oxygen delivery to the skin tissues.GeneticsThis one you can blame on your parents for! Unfortunately genetics can also influence the rate at which our skin ages and how saggy it becomes! Sadly some of us will develop sagging skin much earlier than others due to our genetic makeup! Eek. How to prevent sagging skinWhile some degree of face sagging is a natural part of the ageing process, there are various things we can do to help improve skin firmness and minimize the appearance of sagging skin. Stay Hydrated Hydration is key to maintaining the elasticity and suppleness of our skin. It’s nothing new but drinking plenty of water throughout the day to keep your skin hydrated from the inside out is essential. Water helps keep your skin cells plump and hydrated which in turn promotes elasticity. Additionally, use hydrating skincare products containing ingredients like hyaluronic acid to lock in moisture and plump up the skin. Always wear sunscreen Protecting our skin from UV rays and Blue Light damage with sunscreen and sun-protective measures can dramatically help prevent premature ageing and in turn sagging skin. Wear sunscreen with a high SPF every. single. day no matter what the weather, always consider wearing a hat and seek shade during peak hours when UV is at its most damaging. Follow a Healthy Diet Eating a balanced diet rich in antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals can support skin health and prevent sagging. Include plenty of fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and healthy fats in your diet to provide your skin with essential nutrients and promote collagen production. Including foods such as broccoli, spinach, sweet potato, avocado, nuts and blueberries will work wonders!! Exercise Regularly Regular exercise not only helps maintain a healthy weight but also helps keep sagging skin at bay! This is because it promotes circulation and muscle tone, which can contribute to firmer, more lifted skin. Incorporate strength training exercises targeting the face, neck, and body to keep your muscles toned and prevent sagging. Practice Good Skincare Habits Follow a consistent skincare routine that includes cleansing, exfoliating and moisturising, this will keep skin supple and looking younger for longer. Use Skincare Products with Active Ingredients As well as products formulated with Hyaluronic acid, you’ll want to use skincare containing active ingredients known for their firming and tightening properties. The most effective ingredients to help prevent premature skin sagging includes retinol, peptides, vitamin C, and niacinamide. These ingredients can help stimulate collagen production, improve skin elasticity, and reduce the appearance of sagging. Incorporate facial massage into your daily routine Gentle facial massage techniques can help improve circulation and lymphatic drainage, promoting firmer, glowy and more lifted skin over time. Because it stimulates the facial muscles, a massage is like a mini-workout for your face. It engorges the muscles with blood to oxygenate the skin cells and gives “tone” to your muscles.Incorporate a gentle facial massage using your fingertips or a jade roller into your daily skincare routine. To learn more about the many benefits of facial massage click here Get enough zzzz’s We all know that getting enough sleep is important for our overall health, but did you know it can also improve your skin’s elasticity? During sleep, our body produces collagen and repairs any damage that’s been done to our skin throughout the day. However when we are sleep deprived, our bodies produce more cortisol, a stress hormone that can actually break down collagen! It’s best to aim for 7-9 hours of sleep a night to give your skin the rest it needs. The best skincare products to prevent or improve sagging skin on your facePhytomer Structuriste Firming Contour SerumNo one likes seeing their skin start to sag as we age thanks to the breakdown in collagen and elastin, but with this miracle firming face serum all is not lost! skin cycling

Skin Cycling: What is it and how will it improve your skin?

by Jo Boyden on Apr 19 2024
Ever wondered how some people seem to effortlessly maintain glowing, radiant skin? Well the answer could be due to skin cycling, a skincare concept that has gained huge popularity over recent months and for very good reason, after all skin cycling has the ability to transform your skin in a short period of time! If you aren’t familiar with skin cycling, you’re probably wondering how this is so, and what it even is! Keep reading as we reveal all there is to know about this skincare trend and how it may help improve your complexion too! What is skin cycling? Skin cycling is a strategic approach to your skincare routine that aims to improve results while minimising irritation. It involves alternating between using active ingredients and nourishing ingredients. Instead of bombarding your skin by applying active ingredients every single night, you cycle through them over a four-night period, enabling your skin to rest for a few nights. How does skin cycling work? While there are plenty of variations to skin cycling, a typical skin cycle lasts for four days - two days “on” (otherwise known as “active nights” using active ingredients) and two days “off” (otherwise known as “rest nights” using nourishing ingredients). The theory behind this particular trend is to give the skin a break from products such asexfoliants and retinols which can be harsh or stripping if used consecutively over a period of time. Your classic skin cycling routine The skin cycling rotation begins with exfoliation on the first night(preferably with a chemical exfoliant like lactic acid or glycolic acid), followed by retinol on the second. The third and fourth nights are dedicated to recovery with skin barrier-protecting serums and moisturisers to nurture and hydrate the skin. Then, the cycle repeats.By alternating between active and rest nights, you allow your skin to repair itself and avoid overloading it with too many actives at once. The result? Better results without the irritation! Why Skin Cycling? With so many products out there from cleansers and exfoliators to serums, oils and more, (and let’s not forget the game-changing ingredients we all need to look out for in our skincare) it’s easy to overload our skin. So many of us will layer multiple ingredients night after night without considering recovery. Skin Cycling prevents this. Using specific products on different days regenerates the skin and improves skin quality. Who will benefit from skin cycling? Anyone can! If you aren’t getting the results you want out of your skincare routine despite using products with the best skincare ingredients, skin cycling could be for you! Or ff you suffer from skin irritation, skin cycling can work wonders! It prevents you overloading your skin with multiple active ingredients day after day. By avoiding overloading the skin you’ll maintain its health, balance, and overall well-being. Remember overloading the skin with excessive skincare products and ingredients can lead to skin issues or exacerbate an already existing condition! Firstly, it can disrupt the skin barrier, compromising its ability to retain moisture and protect against external aggressors. This disruption may result in increased sensitivity, irritation, and dryness. Furthermore, overloading the skin can clog pores and contribute to acne breakouts, particularly if heavy or occlusive products are used. Finally, layering too many products may interfere with the absorption and efficacy of active ingredients, leading to diminished results. Simplifying your skincare routine can help streamline your regimen and ensure that each product effectively addresses your skin's needs. The best products to use for skin cycling?Since skin cycling is all about exfoliation and retinol followed by repair and nourishment, these are the products we would highly recommend:Days 1 & 2Vie Collection Cleansing Gel with Glycolic, Lactic and Salicylic Acids – This foaming cleansing gel combines glycolic, lactic and salicylic acids to stimulate cellular activity, break the intercellular glue between dead cells and thoroughly cleanse skin.Pevonia Renewing Glycocides Cream - Combining glycolic acid with hydration hero hyaluronic acid, this treatment cream works to dissolve dead skin cells, improving skin texture and diminishing fine lines too! What’s more, every product in the Micro-Retinol® line contains a powerhouse trio of vitamin C, Vitamin E, and Micro-Retinol®! The addition of Vitamins C and E not only ensures Micro-Retinol®’s stability but also that the skin’s nutrients and density are renewed and preserved!Days 2 & 3Hubislab Premium Active B-tol Ampoule – anti-ageing and skin protecting this complex emulsion is formulated with a botulinum-derivative ingredient (similar to Botox) and hyaluronic acid which provides the skin with deep moisturization to maintain a radiant complexion.Hubislab Moisture Max Hyaluron Complex 65% Ampoule - this outstanding complex serum combines hyaluronic acid, collagen and rosa centifolia flower water to quite literally blast skin with intensive moisture restoring elasticity and balance while protecting skin cells from free radical damage.Hubislab Moisture Max Hydro Moisturiser - packed with hyaluronic acid, this moisture-rich, yet beautifully lightweight cream absorbs quickly into skin without any greasiness, providing skin with deep nourishment and a long-lasting luxurious feeling. Sensitive skin, rosacea or redness? Which do you have?

Sensitive skin, rosacea or redness? Which do you have?

by Jo Boyden on Apr 12 2024
Suffering from sensitive skin? Or is it rosacea perhaps? or maybe you are just prone to frequent redness and facial flushing? Identifying which of these common skin concerns you may have can be somewhat confusing, especially since they often share similar symptoms. But understanding their differences is essential as each condition can affect the skin in various ways!Keep reading as we outline the differences between sensitive skin, rosacea and facial redness, helping you to determine the most effective treatment approach for your skin’s specific needs! ROSACEAUnderstanding RosaceaRosacea is a chronic inflammatory skin condition characterised by redness, flushing, visible blood vessels, and sometimes acne-like bumps (papules and pustules). It typically affects the central part of the face, including the cheeks, nose, chin, and forehead. While the exact cause of rosacea is unknown, factors such as genetics, environmental triggers, and an overactive immune system may contribute to its development. Common triggers include sun exposure, hot or spicy foods, alcohol, stress, and certain skincare products.Managing RosaceaUnfortunately it’s not possible to eliminate rosacea altogether but you can effectively manage it and keep symptoms at bay! To manage rosacea you need to identify and avoid your triggers that can exacerbate symptoms.Unfortunately. sun exposure is the most common trigger for rosacea. While we may all love long days at the beach, if you suffer from rosacea your skin sadly will pay a price. Not only can sunburn make flare-ups even worse, the heat from the sun can also increase your body temperature which in turn dilates blood vessels and triggers inflammation! So you’ll want to make sure you avoid direct sun exposure as much as you can and wear SPF daily. Just be sure to opt for sensitive skin formulations that won’t aggravate your rosacea.Try Hubislab Herb 8 Soothing Blemish Balm SPF 30 PA++. It soothes and regenerates sensitive skin while protecting skin against sun damage, premature skin ageing including dark spots, and other external factors. Its clever formulation of Zinc oxide, UVA and UVB protection and 8 herbal extracts also ensures the prevention of wrinkles and inflammation.Gentle skincare products formulated for rosacea prone skin, free of harsh ingredients such as fragrance, alcohol, and abrasive exfoliants, are also a must!Look for products such as rosacea serum formulated with calming and soothing ingredients like green tea, licorice extract, chamomile extract, and French rose extract. We highly recommend Pevonia’s best-selling RS2 rosacea skincare line – a soothing, calming and irritant free collection that not only alleviates redness and discomfort but also helps create a healthy skin barrier. What’s more for the month of APRIL. When you purchase the Pevonia rosacea RS2 Care Cream, you’ll receive the matching Cleanser and Lotion 50ml for FREE. When it comes to concealing rosacea symptoms, mineral makeup can be a great go-to as well. For the best makeup products for rosacea according to the BC experts click here. And finally try to relax more, stress less, reduce alcohol consumption and eliminate hot, spicy foods from your diet!Sadly stress and anxiety, alcohol and certain foods can cause rosacea symptoms to really flare up! By getting plenty of rest and practicing meditation and yoga can help to keep stress and therefore rosacea at bay. SENSITIVE SKINUnderstanding Sensitive SkinSensitive skin is a common skin condition characterised by heightened reactivity to environmental factors, skincare products, and other external irritants.Symptoms may include redness, itching, burning, stinging, and tightness.Sensitive skin can be caused by a variety of factors, including genetics, allergies, skin barrier dysfunction, and exposure to harsh chemicals or environmental pollutants.Managing Sensitive SkinSensitive skin requires gentle care and attention to maintain its health and balance. From choosing the right skincare products to adopting lifestyle habits that promote skin resilience, you can manage sensitive skin effectively.First things first, you need to manage sensitive skin by using gentle, non-irritating skincare products that are free of potential allergens, fragrances, dyes, and other irritating ingredients. Opt for mild, fragrance-free cleansers, serums and moisturisers formulated specifically for sensitive skin and pay particular attention to moisturising. You want to keep your skin hydrated and nourished with gentle, hydrating serums and moisturisers. Look for ingredients like hyaluronic acid, ceramides, and glycerin, which help maintain the skin's moisture barrier and chamomile to soothe. Our favourites: Hubislab Post Rays Chamomile Complex 70% ampoule. This deeply nourishing serum is formulated with 70% Chamomile, combined with other natural nourishing and soothing ingredients including Centella Asiatica, Hyaluronic Acid and Glycerin. Rich in natural Ceramides, Phospholipids, Green Tea, Glycerin and Chamomile, this calming, nourishing cream effectively infuses the skin with antioxidant, nourishing, soothing, and hydrating benefits. Day after day, it provides a noticeable reduction in skin redness and discomfort.Next you want to consider exfoliation. Remember exfoliating is important even if you have sensitive skin, but once a week will be sufficient. Over-exfoliating can over stimulate sensitive skin and exacerbate your already irritation condition. You’ll want to opt for gentle exfoliants with mild ingredients like fruit enzymes or polyhydroxy acids (PHAs) and avoid abrasive scrubs or harsh chemical exfoliants.Try the highly rated Phytomer Vegetal Exfoliant with natural enzymes. It’s a seriously soft, silky and subtly scented exfoliant perfect for sensitive skin and it eliminates impurities by gently removing dead skin cells with natural enzymes (so no scrubbing or irritating the skin whatsoever!) It encourages cell turnover, revealing beautifully luminous and youthful skin after every use – no jokes.Want to know more about exfoliation and sensitive skin and what to do? Click here. It’s also essential to protect your skin from harmful UV rays by wearing broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher daily, come rain, hail or shine! Choose mineral-based sunscreens containing zinc oxide or titanium dioxide, which are less likely to cause irritation. We LOVE Hubislab Post Rays UV Protect Sun Block SPF50+ PA+++ not only is it formulated with both zinc oxide and titanium dioxide so perfect for sensitive and ageing skin since zero irritation, it’s also rich in hydrolyzed Collagen and peptides keeping skin nourished, soft and supple! Its invisible matte formula also applies smoothly and stays on all day long!Additionally, maintaining a healthy lifestyle, including managing stress, staying hydrated, getting enough beauty sleep, eating a balanced diet rich in antioxidants and omega-3 fatty acids, and protecting the skin from environmental stressors can help reduce sensitivity and improve skin barrier function. FACIAL REDNESSUnderstanding RednessRedness, or erythema, is a common skin concern characterised by the appearance of red or flushed skin. It can be caused by various factors, including rosacea, sensitive skin, sunburn, allergies, irritation, inflammation, and underlying medical conditions. Redness may be temporary or chronic, depending on the underlying cause and triggers.Managing RednessManaging redness involves identifying and addressing the underlying cause. In addition to following a gentle skincare routine suitable for sensitive skin, incorporating anti-inflammatory ingredients such as green tea extract, niacinamide, and licorice root extract may help calm redness and soothe irritated skin. Sun protection is also crucial, as UV exposure can worsen redness and inflammation. When it comes to your red face you need to start with the basics – choose a mild, hydrating cleanser. Harsh cleansers can strip your skin of its natural oils, leading to increased redness and irritation. Cleanse with care, using lukewarm water to avoid shocking your skin.Try: Pevonia Sensitive Skin Cleanser. This beautifully light-textured cleanser gently removes accumulated impurities, while diffusing redness and irritation. Formulated with Chamomile and Calendula it delivers soothing, calming and desensitizing benefits to your delicate skin.If your skin redness is potentially caused by dryness or inflammation a natural face mask or sheet mask specifically formulated to cool and calm skin can work wonders too!Try: ELES Calming and Soothing Sheet Mask. Incorporating natural botanicals it soothes and reduces inflammation. Like a cool balm, this calming mask reduces redness and heat and restores a protective barrier to prevent moisture loss.WE totally understand that when you suffer from rosacea or skin redness you aren’t likely to forego makeup altogether. You do need to let your skin breath freely to reduce irritation though so its essential to opt for mineral makeup that will allow just this. Mineral makeup is non-comedogenic which means it won’t clog your pores.Try: ELES Mineral Powder Foundation. As a sufferer of want for a better word ‘flushed skin’ I personally LOVE the best-selling ELES Mineral Powder Foundation! It’s one of my all-time favourites. It’s one of the most natural-looking, if not THE most natural-looking foundations I have in fact ever tried and being in the industry for 20 years I’ve tried many! And let’s face it we don’t want our makeup to slide off our skin and reveal a flushed complexion at any point right? Plus wearing a primer also creates a barrier between your skin and your makeup therefore preventing any further irritation. If you’re prone to a flushed face we can’t get enough of ELES Retexture Crème Face Primer, it hydrates, soothes, calms and plumps skin with Aloe Barbadensis Gel, Chamomile Extract, Witch Hazel & Marigold. And finally when your face is feeling particularly fiery, try a cold compress. How Korean Skincare will transform your skin

by Jo Boyden on Mar 22 2024
I’m sure I’m correct in saying we’ve all heard about the K-beauty phenomenon! From dewy complexions to flawless makeup looks, this skincare trend is taking the beauty world by storm, but exactly what is #kbeauty and why is it trending? Well we are here to answer all your burning k-beauty questions! Keep reading as we divulge all there is to know about Korean skincare, how it will transform your complexion and the best Korean skincare products in Australia! What is k-beauty?K-beauty, short for Korean beauty, refers to the skincare and cosmetics products, techniques, and trends originating from South Korea. Renowned for its innovative formulations, advanced technology, and holistic approach to skincare, Korean skincare has gained immense popularity worldwide. It encompasses a wide range of products, including cleansers, creams, serums, essences and sheet masks, each designed to address specific skin concerns and enhance your natural beauty. K-beauty emphasizes achieving healthy, radiant skin through consistent routines, gentle ingredients, and a blend of traditional Korean philosophies and modern scientific advancements! Why is Korean skincare trending?Renowned for its innovative formulations (From traditional herbal extracts like ginseng and green tea to cutting-edge ingredients like hyaluronic acid and snail mucin), its holistic approach, and undeniable results, Korean skincare has become more than just a trend – it's a lifestyle. Korean skincare embraces the idea of "skinimalism," focusing on achieving healthy, radiant skin through a curated routine tailored to your individual needs. From double cleansing and layering multiple products to embracing sheet masks and essence, each step is carefully choreographed to cleanse, nourish and protect the skin, leaving it supple, hydrated and glowing with vitality.K-beauty’s multi-step approach has not escaped criticism though, with some claiming the use of multiple products (a 10 step routine in some cases) is “too much for the skin”. Of course this could be the case when using Western formulations which may contain a high percentage of stimulating actives, but it is important to note that Korean skincare and Western skincare are not formulated the same, and trying to use Korean philosophy with Western skincare products can be overwhelming for the skin. While Western skincare is all about targeting specific concerns with potent targeted ingredients, Korean philosophy is all about hydration and reducing inflammation that leads to ageing. So what makes Korean skincare different to western skincare? Multi-step routine Korean skincare popularized a comprehensive routine, with steps like double cleansing, toning, essence, serum, moisturizer, and sunscreen. Professional grade Korean skincare prioritise professional grade formulations using high concentrations of quality ingredients for outstanding results every time. Emphasis on hydration Korean skincare prioritizes hydration with ingredients like hyaluronic acid and ceramides, aiming for a dewy, "glass skin" look. Preventative approach Korean skincare focuses on preventing issues with regular sunscreen use and anti-aging ingredients. Gentle formulations Korean skincare offers mild products suitable for sensitive skin, made with natural ingredients. Innovative ingredients Korean brands use cutting-edge technology, like fermented extracts, snail mucin and plant-based stem cells, for targeted results. Holistic beauty Korean skincare promotes inner and outer health, including diet, hydration, sleep, and stress management, alongside skincare for radiant skin. Why follow the 10-Step k-beauty skincare routine? Designed to truly pamper and nourish the skin, this comprehensive 10 step routine may seem daunting at first but it offers a customizable approach to skincare, allowing individuals to tailor their routine based on their skin type, concerns, and preferences. From cleansing and exfoliating to toning, treating, and moisturizing, each step plays a vital role in achieving radiant, youthful-looking skin. Still wondering why Korean skincare is for you? all about retinol

All you need to know about Retinol

by Jo Boyden on Mar 14 2024
If you’ve ever wondered what the secret is to some people's youthful, or ageless glow, despite the fact they are in their 40s, 50s and beyond, it's likely retinol! The holy grail of the skincare world, retinol is a true multi-tasker, providing skin with a multitude of benefits from wrinkle reduction to pore perfecting and everything in between! Whether you're a skincare novice or a seasoned enthusiast, we are here to tell you all you need to know about retinol and why you’ll want to add this powerhouse ingredient into your skincare routine. What is retinol? When it comes to reducing visible signs of ageing, retinol is the “super-ingredient” every beauty professional raves about. A derivative of vitamin A, retinol helps to radially reduce the appearance of fine lines and prevents premature skin ageing including wrinkles and age spots. But there is so much more retinol can do for your skin… What does retinol do? In short, retinol is a true multi-taster! Here is the low down on what retinol actually does for your skin! Retinol promotes cell turnover When skin is exposed to the UV rays of the sun it absorbs free radicals, which attack healthy cells. Retinol interrupts this process by attaching itself to damaged cells and communicating with them, helping them to act like healthy cells again. It also accelerates the turnover of skin cells encouraging the shedding of old, damaged skin cells and stimulating the production of new, healthy ones. This process helps in maintaining smoother and more youthful-looking skin. Retinol reduces fine lines and wrinkles One of retinol's shining talents is its ability to diminish the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. By promoting collagen production, it helps improve skin elasticity and firmness, reducing the signs of ageing. Retinol fades dark spots Retinol is a champion in tackling hyperpigmentation. It can lighten dark spots, sun spots, and even out skin tone by inhibiting the production of melanin, the pigment responsible for discolouration. Retinol unclogs pores If you're dealing with pesky blackheads or whiteheads, retinol can be your best friend. It helps prevent the clogging of pores, reducing the chances of acne and promoting clearer skin. Retinol improves skin texture Using retinol regularly can lead to smoother and softer skin. It aids in minimizing rough patches, refining texture, and giving your skin a more polished appearance. Retinol boosts collagen production Collagen is like the glue that holds your skin together. Retinol stimulates collagen synthesis, which contributes to improved skin structure, firmness, and overall resilience. Retinol addresses acne If you're battling acne, retinol can be beneficial. It helps regulate oil production, prevents the formation of comedones (clogged pores), and promotes a clearer complexion. Is retinol good for acne? Absolutely! Retinol is a powerhouse against acne, regulating oil production, unclogging pores, and reducing inflammation. In fact its skin-renewing properties fade post-acne marks. Can you use hyaluronic acid with retinol? Yes! Hyaluronic acid and retinol are actually a dream team when it comes to skincare. While retinol addresses signs of ageing and acne, hyaluronic acid provides a burst of essential hydration. The combination of both ingredients ensures skin remains moisturised, plump, and balanced.Apply hyaluronic acid first to hydrate, followed by retinol for its transformative effects. If the two ingredients are in the same product even better! Together, they create the perfect routine for a radiant and youthful complexion. Can you use retinol and vitamin C together? Yes, you can use retinol and vitamin C together in your skincare routine, but it's important to use them strategically to maximize their benefits without causing irritation. Both ingredients offer potent anti-aging and skin-brightening effects.Apply vitamin C in the morning for antioxidant protection and brighter skin. Use retinol in the evening to promote cell turnover and reduce signs of ageing. Start with lower concentrations, gradually increasing as your skin adjusts. Always use sunscreen during the day as both ingredients can make your skin more sensitive to sunlight. Can I use niacinamide with retinol? Yes, you can use niacinamide (vitamin B3) with retinol in your skincare routine. These two ingredients are generally considered compatible and can work well together to address various skin concerns. Niacinamide offers soothing and anti-inflammatory properties, complementing retinol's anti-aging and skin-renewing benefits. Using them together can help minimize potential irritation sometimes associated with retinol use. Incorporating niacinamide and retinol into your routine can contribute to a balanced approach for addressing fine lines, wrinkles, and overall skin health. Can you use salicylic acid and retinol together? When using two potent, acne-fighting ingredients, it's best to take precautions before combining them. Salicylic acid and other BHAs and AHAs are exfoliating ingredients that can potentially increase skin sensitivity when combined with retinol. If you are wanting to use both ingredients in your skincare routine, it is best to use them at night, on different days, and at different times and built up from there. Can you use retinol when pregnant? Unfortunately, retinol is generally discouraged during pregnancy due to potential risks. High doses of vitamin A, (of which as previously mentioned retinol is a derivative) may pose concerns for foetal development. Instead look at alternative skincare ingredients safe for pregnancy, like vitamin C or hyaluronic acid. Does retinol help with pigmentation? Yes, retinol is effective in addressing pigmentation issues. It works by promoting skin cell turnover, which helps fade dark spots and hyperpigmentation. By encouraging the shedding of old, pigmented skin cells and promoting the growth of new, evenly pigmented cells, retinol contributes to a more even skin tone. Regular use of retinol can be beneficial in reducing the appearance of sunspots, age spots, and other forms of hyperpigmentation, leading to a brighter and more radiant complexion. Is retinol good for sun damage? Yes, retinol is definitely beneficial for addressing sun damage. Its ability to promote skin renewal and collagen production helps reduce the appearance of sun-induced wrinkles, fine lines, and dark spots. Don’t forget though, it's essential to use sunscreen alongside retinol to protect the skin from further sun damage and maximize its effectiveness. Can everyone use retinol? While retinol is great for those concerned with wrinkles, sun damage and acne, it can cause dryness, redness and peeling, so people with sensitive skin need to be cautious. Sensitive skin can however be trained to tolerate retinol with slow introduction. Retinol is not recommended however for sensitized skin (reactive, inflamed and sunburn skin). Always perform a patch test before applying retinol to the entire face to check for any adverse reactions. And remember retinol is a no go for pregnant woman or women breast feeding. Can I use retinol every night? Once your skin adjusts to retinol you can definitely use it every night! You need to understand that to reap the rewards of retinol though, there will likely be an adjustment period first. When you introduce retinol to your skincare routine, your skin might experience some initial side effects like redness, flakiness, or dryness. It's like the initiation phase, but don't worry, it's usually just your skin getting used to this powerhouse ingredient. Gradual introduction and consistent use can help your skin adapt and benefit long term. Start by applying it one or two times a week for the first week and gradually increase application. Remember retinol is best applied at night, particularly because it makes your skin more photosensitive. Oh and don’t forget your sunscreen! Retinol makes your skin more sensitive to the sun, so you’ll need to slather on SPF every morning (but you should be anyway!!) How long does retinol take to work? Results from retinol skincare can vary. Some people may notice improvements in a few weeks, days even, while others might take a couple of months. Generally, it takes at least 12 weeks to see significant changes in terms of reduced fine lines, improved texture, and diminished dark spots. Consistency is key, and it's crucial to be patient as the benefits of retinol often accumulate over time. Once you see results you will never look back! What are the best retinol products? With so many retinol products on the market, it can be hard to know which to trust, that’s where we, the BC professionals can help! We highly recommend Pevonia’s Micro-Retinol® range. Every product in the range which includes Micro-Retinol® Foaming Cleanser, Micro-Retinol® Essential Toner, Micro-Retinol® Serum and Micro-Retinol® Essential Moisturiser utilizes a specialized technology to create Retinol micro-particles that get delivered deep into the epidermis. Changes in my skin are an increased smoothing of lines and crepe-skin areas, softening, hydrating and contouring, and reduced pigmentation. Some results were instantly visible and now after three weeks my skin just keeps improving. I am 60 and tried this after other brands became ineffective. Now my skin appears luminous and more refined. So, I am going to purchase the whole range. Its a surprise to see a brighter smoother complexion at my age.” - Annie “I wake up with my skin glowing after using this. I noticed a smoothing of my skin's texture and fine lines almost immediately.” - Sam F “I love this retinol serum! I have been using it for a while now and find it smooths out fine lines and adds an overall healthy glow to my skin. Love it!” Veronica“As soon as the micro retinol moisturiser soaks in (takes a couple of minutes), my skin immediately looks smoother. Pores look smaller, and skin tone looks evener. I can’t recommend this enough.” - Sabrina Thompson “I've been using other Pevonia products for about a year and decided to try the Micro Retinol Serum to bump things up a bit. I saw almost instant results! Coarse lines, especially around my mouth have quite literally disappeared. Same thing for smile lines and crows feet. My 60 year old skin feels as smooth, soft, and healthy as when I was....well, I can't even remember when my skin was this glowing.” Julie M

by Jo Boyden on Mar 14 2024
From elegant updo’s and radiant skin, beautiful bold eyes and subtle nude lips, the 2024 Oscars dazzled not only with cinematic brilliance but also with show-stopping makeup looks that stole the spotlight.Want to channel some red-carpet glamour yourself? Keep reading as we countdown 6 steps to recreate the best makeup look of the night – awarded to Jennifer Lawrence!Like a modern-day Audrey Hepburn, Jennifer Lawrence bought winged liner back into business! Sporting thick liquid liner over a wash of perfectly blended taupe shadow, coupled with beautifully bronzed skin, impeccably groomed brows and a subtle nude lip, she was the epitome of Old School Hollywood Glamour, and here’s how you can be too! Step 1 – Flawless baseStart by prepping your skin with a nourishing primer. Creating an extra layer between your skin and makeup, the primer will plump fine lines, blur imperfections and blemishes, smooth skin, and help makeup last all day without caking, creasing or the need for constant touch-ups. It's often the forgotten step but Oh so important! Trust me.Next to create Jennifers flawless base, use a soft matte, long-wearing foundation, we LOVE ELES Cosmetic’s best-selling Liquid Powder Mineral Foundation). Matte foundations provide a smooth finish, perfect to recreate Jennifer Lawrence's look. Finish this step by concealing any blemishes or dark circles with a full-coverage concealer such as ELES Liquid Concealer. Step 2 - Bronzed radianceNow it’s time to enhance your features and add some colour to your face! Apply a bronzer to contour beneath your cheeks and jawline to “slim” the face (we recommend the ELES Mineral Sheer Bronzer in Rio De Janeiro as its Silky, mineral-enriched and imparts a natural radiance and youthful glow without streaking.) Then apply a little extra to your forehead to add that “sun-kissed” warmth. Finish by applying a touch of warm-toned blush to add a hint of colour to your cheeks. Step 3 – Stand out eyesEmbrace old school glamour when it comes to your eyes by firstly applying a neutral eyeshadow across your lids. Next use a taupe or soft brown shade and blend softly above the crease of your eye lid, as well as beneath the lower lash line for a subtle smoky finish. Finally add your third shade (a deeper brown) to just below your brow bone. Try the ELES’s Build your own shadow palette and choose the shades that would work best for you. Next it's time to amp up the drama with a jet-black liquid eyeliner, like ELES Felt Tip Liner, adding a winged effect. Finish with a coat of volumizing mascara for fluttery lashes. Step 4 - BrowsNow it's time to put some emphasise into your eyebrows. We recommend you use the ELES Brow Blender in Dark Taupe. With the spool end, brush the brows upwards, then using short soft strokes apply the pencil. Step 5 - Subtle lips Complete Jennifer Lawrences Oscars look with a soft, nude lip colour. Choose a hydrating formula for a plump pout. We adore the ELES Velvet Satin lipstick in Middlesex Street. Outline your lips with a nude lip liner such as the ELES Gel Lipliner in naked for added definition. Step 6 - Final touches Add a sweep of translucent powder to ensure longevity. A setting spray will add a natural dewiness or lock in your look too.Remember, practice makes perfect. Experiment with these steps, adapting them to suit your unique features and personal style.
Look younger with makeup 14 expert tips

Look younger with makeup: 14 expert tips

by Jo Boyden on Mar 08 2024
Who says you can't cheat a little on the ageing game with the magic of makeup? While skincare is essential for keeping skin healthy and happy, makeup can literally take years off your face in next to no time, you just need to know what and how to apply! Well we've put together our top makeup tips from the BC experts, 14 makeup tips that will have you looking younger in a matter of minutes! Keep reading as we count them down.1. Start with a nourishing base, every time. Before applying any makeup, you need to start with well-hydrated skin so don’t get lazy when it comes to your morning skincare routine. Start by making sure your face is perfectly cleansed, then apply your serum and moisturiser. If you haven’t prepped your skin before applying your foundation, chances are your skin will look and feel dry. Plus makeup tends to stick to dry areas on the skin making it appear patchy. It’ll even seep into fine lines and wrinkles accentuating them! For best results apply your moisturiser and wait five minutes for it to properly absorb in. Remember hydration really is the secret to plump, younger looking skin!2. Arm yourself with a primerPrimers are often the forgotten step when it comes to makeup application but we are here to tell you that this underrated makeup staple is a necessity, especially when it comes to looking younger with makeup! Creating an extra layer between your skin and makeup, face primers are used to plump fine lines, blur impurities and blemishes, smooth skin, and help makeup last all day without caking, creasing or the need for constant touch-ups. They really are key to achieving smooth, flawless skin that’s perfectly prepped for your foundation!Check out our favourite primers here.3. Always opt for a dewy foundationYou might be a lover of powder foundations but if you want to create a more youthful and radiant complexion you need to consider ditching the matte finish. No matter your skin type, too much face powder can actually age you! That’s right, it can highlight fine lines and wrinkles instead of helping to conceal them. Instead embrace dewy foundations, BB Creams or tinted moisturisers instead. They provide skin with natural coverage, SPF protection (which we all know is the main contributor to premature ageing) and a perfect subtle glow.If your skin tends to be on the oily side, you can still use a little powder, but remember sparingly and just on your t-zone.4. A good concealer will give you an instant eye liftConcealer really is your best friend when it comes to looking younger! Used correctly, concealer can brighten a tired complexion, cover up any blemishes, conceal dark under-eye circles and have you looking bright-eyed in seconds! To look younger, you’re best to opt for a concealer packed with amazing anti-ageing and eye nurturing ingredients like ELES Dual Action Concealer and watch those ageing dark circles, puffiness, age spots and blemishes disappear in seconds!Just be sure to choose the right shade for your skin and apply it correctly! For more on the best way to cover undereye dark circles click here.5. Lift your lashesAs we age our lashes get thinner and shorter so it's essential to add volume so they stand out! A lash lift with mascara is a powerful tool for defying the ageing process! Darkened and defined lashes open up our eyes, creating a refreshed, youthful and wide awake appearance.Curling your lashes can work wonders too but be careful how you do so! For more information on the best mascara, mascara hacks and eye lash tips for mature women click here.6. Play with eyeshadow shadesEyeshadow isn’t an essential step but by adding a touch of shimmer to your lids can enhance eyes ageing eyes. Just be sure to opt for warm, neutral eyeshadows. Soft, earthy tones can create a subtle, age-defying effect.7. Skip the heavy black eyelinerIf you use eyeliner, as many of us do, you’ll want to trade your harsh eyeliner for a softer approach. Use brown or grey liners for a more natural look that defines without weighing down your eyes.8. Brighten eyes with a waterline eyelinerInvesting in a waterline eyeliner will be a game changer for tired eyes. All you need to do is line your bottom waterline for an instantly wide-eyed effect. We promise you it’s worth the money as one swipe will truly create brighter, younger looking eyes.9. Don’t forget your browsJust as the hair on our heads can thin with age, so do our eyebrows! The thing is your brows can completely change how your face looks. Full, well-groomed brows are an instant youth-booster. If brow are thinning, fill in sparse areas with a brow pencil or powder for a lifted, more defined look. But don’t overfill the front part of your brow though! This area should have soft hair that graduates into more density. If you overfill this area you can make your eye brows look way too harsh. Read more on how to create perfect brows.10. Applying blush is a mustBelieve us when we say a sweep of blush on the apples of your cheeks adds a youthful flush. Just be sure to apply it correctly – use a blush brush and lift colour upwards towards your temple from the apple of your cheek.11. And don’t forget bronzerBronzer is your secret weapon for a youthful glow! Applied strategically, it adds warmth to your complexion, erasing signs of fatigue and dullness but instead mimicking a healthy, sun-kissed glow.Just be careful when and where you apply it as dusting copious amounts of bronzer all over our nose, chin, cheeks and forehead can play up fine lines and large pores as the powder sinks into them. The best (and the most flattering!) way is to apply your bronzer is with a bronzer brush to the perimeter of your face in the shape of a number three. Start on your forehead near your temples and loop down to the tops of your cheekbones, then curve out and around again along your jaw.12. Plump up those lipsAs we age, many of us will experience a reduction in lip volume and thinning of the lips! So you’ll need to create the illusion of plumped lips with lipliner! A lipliner will define your lips and prevent feathering. For more on how to apply lip liner for fuller looking lips click here.13. Using an illuminator can add luminosity to skin and help accentuate cheekbonesFinish your look with a subtle illuminator on the high points of your face – cheekbones, brow bones, and the tip of your nose.14. Set your makeup with a finishing powderA light dusting of translucent powder, finishing powder or even facial mist will set your makeup, preventing it from settling into fine lines. Remember, less is more in the powder department.

by Jo Boyden on Mar 01 2024
Many of us are guilty of spending a fortune on makeup and skincare products in the quest for healthier, more youthful skin, so imagine getting your hands one a BB Cream that quite literally does it all! And no I’m not saying you can do away with your daily skincare routine, after all cleansing your skin is the most important step! But I’m talking about a BB Cream that is your moisturiser, foundation, antioxidant, blue light and sun protection in one, and that’s packed to the brim with the very best ingredients anti-ageing skincare has to offer! Oh and it's certified organic and vegan and made in Australia too! Interested to know more? Keep reading….   Firstly what is a BB Cream? Beauty Balm or Blemish Balm, as otherwise known, BB Creams are your 3-in-one foundation. They offer all the benefits of a light-to-medium foundation (and sometimes fuller coverage as well) in a speedier formula that nourishes, corrects, and protects your skin too! Its smoother texture also allows BB Cream to function as a primer by evening out skin tone for flawless makeup application. Why choose ELES Blue Light Radiant BB Cream 30? The coverage, the texture, the SPF, the ingredients, honestly this BB Cream has it all! It's light, but buildable, perfect for all skin types, provides skin with a supple glowy, flawless finish which looks like you aren’t wearing makeup at all, and it not only provides skin with SPF 30 to protect it from the sun's UV rays, but it also shields skin from Blue Light damage omitted from our screens too! Blue Light Damage if you don’t know has become a real problem, and just like the sun's harmful rays, blue light from our devices is ageing our skin, every single day. Scary right? And let’s face it we all spend much of the day glued to devices! But most importantly it’s the best of the best when it comes to skincare makeup thanks to its multitude of natural anti-ageing ingredients including the Kakadu Plum! Australia’s native superfruit thanks to its extraordinary composition of vitamins and antioxidants! Well known for their incredibly high vitamin content, Kakadu Plums contain over 3000mg of Vitamin C per 100g of fruit! That’s a vitamin C concentration 100 times higher than oranges! Crazy right? And when used in natural skincare products, this supercharged ingredient works to stimulate collagen production (essential for keeping the skin youthful), reduces fine lines and wrinkles, reduces the appearance of hyperpigmentation and any scarring, and visibly brightens the skin. So when we say this BB Cream is radiance-inducing, we are not joking! We all know the benefits of vitamin C, but this powerhouse ingredient is highly praised for its skin brightening benefits. Kakadu Plums also have an extremely rare antioxidant profile which means they are highly effective at detoxifying the skin and fighting off free radical damage caused by environmental factors such as pollution and sun exposure. What’s more, Kakadu plum oil has long been sought after for its antifungal, antibacterial and deeply soothing properties. It has the ability to help reduce redness, inflammation and irritation, restoring the skin's natural barrier while also encouraging elasticity and suppleness! This means this BB Cream really is ideal for all skin types! The new Blue Light Radiant BB Cream from ELES Cosmetics really is a powerhouse! And thank me later!
beauty mistakes that make you look younger

19 beauty mistakes that can make you look older than you are

by Jo Boyden on Feb 23 2024
Ever find yourself staring in the mirror and wondering why you’re looking older than you actually are (or feel!) despite investing in expensive skincare and makeup products time and time again? Well you most certainly aren’t alone! Unfortunately many of us are guilty of accidentally adding years to our face thanks to a number of beauty mistakes we are making! From basking in the sun without SPF (eek!) to overdoing the foundation, keep reading as we count down 20 beauty mistakes that could be making you look older than you are! Becoming complacent with your skincare routine One of the cardinal sins in the beauty world is neglecting your skincare routine. No amount of makeup can compensate for poor skin health, nor will your makeup look good without proper skin prep! Yes, many of us are time poor, especially in the mornings, but I can’t express how important it is to invest, even just a little time, into a proper skincare routine. This starts with cleansing your skin every morning. Not moisturising before applying your makeup Hydrated skin is key to creating the perfect smooth surface for makeup. If your skin is dehydrated it can have an adverse effect on your foundation’s appearance and make skin appear dull, dry and flaky too! Both your morning and evening skincare routine, no matter how busy you are, should include a good nourishing serum and anti-ageing moisturiser. Try products formulated with marine collagen and hyaluronic acid, two anti-ageing wonder ingredients. Just be sure not to overload your skin with product or overstimulate the sebum glands as producing excess oil can cause foundation to slide off your skin revealing what might be a less than desired complexion. Try; Two BC best-sellers – Pevonia Hyalouric Acid Hydra Serum and Pevonia Age Correction Marine Collagen Cream. Ignoring eye care Unfortunately our eyes are the first area of our face to show ageing, so you need to show it love just as you would the rest of your face! This means applying a good eye cream daily! Like a moisturiser, an eye cream’s main objective is to deliver brightening and anti-ageing ingredients, however in a milder, gentler, safer dose. Moisturisers tend to have a much richer consistency in comparison to their counterpart which if applied under the eyes can prove too much, resulting in irritation, allergic reactions and milia.Eye creams also tend to be targeted to specific eye concerns such as crow’s feet, under eye bags and dark circles. Want younger looking eyes? Start wearing eye cream or eye gel today! Not applying sunscreen every. single. day This one's a no-brainer. Sun damage is the ultimate age accelerator, wreaking havoc on collagen and elasticity. You need to embrace daily sunscreen, rain or shine, if you don’t you really will be adding years to your face instead of reducing them! Forgetting regular exfoliation is a must As we age, our skin’s natural exfoliation process slows down and causes a build up of dead, dull skin, leading to a dull complexion and emphasizing fine lines. Regular exfoliation however helps to slough off the dead skin, promoting cell turnover and revealing a fresher, more youthful-looking complexion. Be sure to exfoliate at least once a week. If you’re worried about exfoliating because you have sensitive skin try using an enzyme exfoliator free of granules. For more on the beautifying benefits of exfoliation click here. Choosing the wrong shade of foundation We understand, you want your skin to look like you have a healthy glow but you shouldn’t attempt to achieve this with your foundation! Opting for a shade too dark or heavy will not only create a mask like effect but it will highlight wrinkles too! You need to choose a shade that perfectly matches your skin tone! Choosing the wrong foundation formula Talking of foundation, choosing the correct shade isn’t the only thing you have to worry about, choosing the incorrect formula can add years to your face too! There is this pretence that as we age, we should opt for thicker foundation to cover our imperfections but actually when you use a full-coverage foundation or are too heavy-handed with your application, the makeup settles into the wrinkles, pronouncing them even more! Just remember quality over quantity! Steer clear of the thick, full coverage foundation, instead opt for light, sheer bases that can be buildable, this way you can focus on areas that need that extra coverage. Try; ELES Cosmetics New Blue Light Radiant BB Cream 30. It literally primes, tints, nourishes, conceals and evens out skin tone, plus it protects skin from UVA, UVB, Blue Light and free radical damage, Genius! Using too much powder to set your makeup While setting makeup is important, piling on the powder can accentuate wrinkles and dryness. Use a light, mineral based powder and focus on the T-zone, and leave the rest of your skin with a natural finish. For mature, dry or dehydrated skin, opting for a good setting spray might be best. Try Pevonia’s Hyaluronic Acid Hydra Mist – Formulated with Hyaluronic Acid, ultra-calming Chamomile, Aloe, Green Tea and aromatic essential oils, this multi-tasting product helps makeup stay in place all day long (no more looking in the mirror mid-morning and seeing that makeup has disappeared from your face!) Rubbing Your Eyes The area around your eyes is the most delicate on your face, fact. When we are tired it’s easy to fall into the trap of rubbing our eyes, or when applying eye makeup with precision. We’ve all been guilty of pulling at our eyes I’m sure, but tugging, rubbing or pulling at your eye area can cause tiny blood vessels to break resulting in dark circles that make you look tired All. Of. The. Time. Instead, start applying an anti-ageing eye cream morning and night pronto! I am currently loving Vie Collection’s Chrono Eyes Puffiness-Dark Circles Wrinkles Cream. It’s a beautifully fine cream enriched with moisturising ingredients to nourish the eye area while reversing puffiness, dark circles and wrinkles! Seriously! Not looking after your eyebrows Just as the hair on our heads can thin with age, so do our eyebrows, so to look younger, we want to create instantly fake fullness and to do this we need to fill them in with the perfect brow pencil! Just be sure you don’t overfill the front part of your brow though! This area should have soft hair that graduates into more density. If you overfill this area you can make your eye brows look way too harsh. Read more on how to create perfect brows and get grooming! Using harsh eyeliner shade Yes, eyeliner is essential for defining eyes, I wouldn’t live without mine but using a harsh black liner can emphasize under-eye circles and make eyes appear smaller. Try using a brown or grey liner, focusing on tightlining for definition. Blush Blunder Applying blush too low can drag down your features. Sweep it upwards towards your temples for a youthful lift. Caking on concealer under your eyes Caking on concealer to hide dark circles can actually worsen the problem. Use a lightweight formula and apply it in thin layers. Neglecting your hands While your facial skincare routine is crucial, so many of us forget to look after our hands! An area always in the sun and as a result often show signs of ageing first! Apply sunscreen, moisturize, and treat them with the same care you give your face. Ignoring Your Neck and Decolletage Another forgotten area! And the area of your skin which can actually age you the most! Exposed to sunlight just as much as your face (and hands!), if your neck and decolletage aren’t cared for daily or protected with SPF, they can end up crepey and wrinkly so much earlier than they should! Whatever you do for your face you should do for your neck and decolletage too. There are neck and chest specific products you can use, try Pevonia’s Age Correction Rapid Restore Neck and Chest religiously, it’s a 2 in 1 serum and cream which hydrates, nourishes refines and brightens skin for a more youthful appearance while smoothing wrinkles too! But there is also nothing wrong with using your daily moisturiser or a hydrating body cream instead! Just start doing it now! Going to sleep with your makeup still on! I’m sure we’ve all been guilty of skipping our evening cleansing routine once in a while because the idea of peeling ourselves off our bed just doesn’t feel like an option, but did you know just how bad this can be for your skin? Not removing your makeup at night hinders the skin renewal process that takes place while you sleep. The days makeup and grime can clog the pores and trap dirt which can be damaging to your skin and fatigue (ageing!) signs start to appear. And then there are your eyes. Mascara makes your lashes stiff; it’s part of its job, but leaving it on while you sleep will cause the stiffness to turn into dryness that can trigger lashes to break and soon result to lash fallouts! For hassle free cleansing use a all rounder makeup remover like Phytomer’s Doux Contour Eye and Lip Waterproof Makeup Remover. It's a fantastic and effectively melts away makeup and grime with minimum effort! Combining the effectiveness of an oil (a trio of oils in fact) and the gentleness of a lotion, this ultra-hydrating makeup remover, eradicates even the most stubborn of lips and eye makeup fast!Another cleanser we are loving is Pevonia’s new CleanRefresh Foaming Oil Cleanser. Its oil formulation transforms into a luscious foamy cleanser on application when mixed with water and it leaves skin feeling fantastically refreshed and beautifully clean without the drying effects that other cleansers can leave. Plus its subtle scent is just heavenly. Not drinking enough water As I’m sitting here writing this, I can hold my hands up and say today so far I’ve only drunk 2 glasses of water when I should have in fact consumed at least a litre by now! Yes, it’s fact, water, or lack of should I say is a real skin ager!! And I know I must practice what a preach! The thing is I do, but some days I will admit it’s easy to forget! And when I do, I get cross with myself as I can see it in my skin! It’s drier, duller and devitalised. This is because drinking ‘enough’ water helps the body to flush out toxins while increasing blood flow to the skin which gives it an even tone and dewy appearance! And dewy skin equals youthful skin after all!Not a huge fan of water? Try a good herbal tea instead. Indulging in a shower or bath that is way to hot! How many of us are guilty of indulging in a hot shower or simply washing our faces with water set to a high temp. But really for best and healthy results we should be washing with lukewarm water. This is because extreme water temperatures will strip healthy natural oils from your skin quickly, making it dry and therefore age much faster. Water that’s too hot can also dilate your capillaries leading to spider veins. Not getting enough shut eye If I had a dollar for every time I said to my husband I must get to bed early tonight because I need more sleep and am fed up of looking old and tired, I’d be a rich woman. While they say practice what you preach, I am a testament that not getting enough sleep (when I could indeed fit in another 1-2 hours a night (darn netflix!) literally does age you. Beauty sleep is real! Poor sleep is quite literally to blame for premature ageing, dermatitis, eczema, acne, loss of collagen and more! Scary right? So let’s make a pact and try for that 8 hours + we really do need nightly and enjoy reduced puffiness and radiant skin instead!
Antioxidants: Why these anti-agers are so important

Antioxidants: Why these anti-agers are so important

by Jo Boyden on Feb 15 2024
We are told to eat a diet rich in antioxidants every day, but when it comes to our skin, applying products rich in antioxidants can be game changing too. But what exactly are antioxidants, and why are they so essential for our skin? Keep reading for our guide on these age-defying skin saviours, from their many benefits to the antioxidants you’ll want to ensure are in your daily skincare routine. What are antioxidants?Antioxidants are powerful compounds that defend our skin from free radicals. But what are these free radicals, you might be thinking? Free radicals are unstable molecules generated by exposure to factors like UV rays, pollution, cigarette smoking, industrial chemicals and more! They wreak havoc on our skin by causing damage to cells, speeding up the ageing process, and contributing to a range of skin issues!Antioxidants, on the other hand, neutralize these free radicals, preventing them from causing damage to our skin. Whether you're dealing with redness, sensitivity, or conditions like rosacea, antioxidants can help ease discomfort and promote a more balanced complexion.
