How to protect your skin from pollution

by Jo Boyden on Sep 08 2023
We all know that the sun’s UV rays can wreak havoc on our skin, but are we all aware of how damaging pollution can be too? We’re talking everything from soot, dust or smoke to even smaller specs, which cannot be seen by the naked eye!If you’ve ever suffered from dull, devitalised skin, blotchiness and breakouts, discolouration, inflammation and premature ageing even, chances are it could be the result of pollution, and if you live in an urban area like me, there is sadly no escaping it! The good news however, is you can take many measures to protect your skin from it, keep reading as we reveal them all. Smart Cleansing I’m certain when I say we all cleanse our skin daily, but cleansing your skin properly (not aggressively) each night is an essential when it comes to protecting your skin from pollution. While pollutants can be like cell munching monsters that stick to the skin like velcro, a great cleanser, used gently will help remove them and still maintain your skin’s natural barrier. And the great news is there are cleansers that have been designed specifically to target pollution. They thoroughly remove dirt, grime, makeup, pollution and impurities, but do not strip the skin like harsher cleansers can.Consider a double cleansing routine too if your wear makeup everyday, starting with an oil-based cleanser followed by Phytomer Souffle Marin Cleansing Foaming Cream. Formulated with depolluting armeria maritima, an anti-pollution marine sugar and oligomer (seawater concentrate rich in minerals and trace elements), it cleanses, purifies, and invigorates the skin with a beautifully fresh, clean feeling. Effective exfoliation Just cleansing your face is likely not enough to remove all the polluting particles once they have entered your pores which is why you need a good exfoliating cleanser too! Cue award winning product Phytomer CITYLIFE Ultra Cleansing Flash Peel. This is the first of its kind, a pollution defence deep cleanser. Power packed with a high concentration of exfoliating enzymes, it leaves the skin healthy, purified, smooth, soft and with an incredible glow. Love. Skin barrier boost Your skin has its own protective barrier, but it could use some reinforcements. Look for an added boost of hydration and antioxidants like vitamin C, vitamin E and niacinamide, in the form of a serum or concentrate. These superheros fight off free radicals and help further repair skin damage caused by pollution.Try Phytomer Oligo 6 Marine Concentrate with Vitamins, Prebiotic Complex and Trace Elements which includes vitamins C, E, B and B3, Phytomer’s marine prebiotic complex and OLIGOMER®, to effectively help fight free radicals on the skins surface. This moisturising gel really is the perfect antidote for tired, dull complexions. You’ll love the way it rebalances, hydrates and boosts lacklustre skin (as well as protecting it of course!) Sun protection Never, ever underestimate the power of sunscreen! Sunscreen not only shields your skin from harmful UV rays but also acts as a protective barrier against pollution. Opt for a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher and wear it daily, even on cloudy days! Face Mask Treat yourself to a detoxifying face mask once or twice a week. Your skin will thank you for it! Clay masks, charcoal masks and masks with activated charcoal can help draw out impurities and pollutants from your pores. The face mask we can’t recommend more highly is Phytomer Radiance Reviving Mask with Clay. It combines 100% natural red and white clays, blue microalgae, red algae and a comprehensive depolluting complex of 3 marine sugars, and instantly unclogs pores and counters the effects of pollution (dehydration, signs of fatigue, dark spots and a dull complexion!) Want your skin to look less tired and to recover its original radiance? Try this! Hydrate, inside and out When we talk about skin and hydration we aren’t just talking about moisturising, it’s about maintaining your skins natural barrier. You want to protect your skin as best you can! Remember to drink water like it’s going out of fashion and apply your moisturiser religiously as it can help in lock that much needed moisture as well as create a protective layer on your skin. Better still look for a moisturiser specifically formulated to combat the effects of pollution. We love Phytomer Citylife Face and Eye Contour Sorbet Cream. With its Citysafe complex (a trio of anti-oxidant biotech marine sugars) and Oligomer, it literally sweeps away toxic micro-particles and repairs skin damage caused by pollution! Even better, its suitable for face and eyes, re-oxygenating tired, dull and dehydrated skin. And finally, don’t skip on an antioxidant-rich diet! Weve talked about antioxidants in your skincare, but a diet rich in antioxidants can also do wonders for your skin, especially if you’re living in an urban area. Be sure to load up on colourful fruits and veggies, and add nuts and fatty fish into the equation too. These are the best foods to provide your body with the tools it needs to fight free radicals and repair skin damage! So, the long and the short of it is pollution is bad, antioxidants are good and implementing these protective measures into your daily routine can help your skin stay healthy.
under eye crepiness

Top tips to improve under eye crepiness

by Jo Boyden on Sep 01 2023
If like me, you’re in your 40’s (or older), you may have fallen victim to under eye crepiness – that undesirable loose, wrinkled skin that can make you look tired, but also older than you actually are! This is because as we age the collagen and elastin levels in our skin starts to decline, as it does the delicate skin around our eyes (one of the first and most prevalent areas to show premature ageing) becomes dryer and thinner, and well crepey! Luckily all is not lost though! There are a number of steps you can take to improve its appearance, and we aren’t talking chemical peels, dermal fillers, laser and Botox, no siree, we are all about natural, non-intrusive alternatives. Keep reading as we reveal them all!Firstly though, why might you be more susceptible to under eye crepiness? The most common cause of fine lines, wrinkles and crepey skin under your eyes is unfortunately ageing, which can of course be influenced by genetics (thank you Mum and Dad!) But other common contributing factors which may be possible to avoid include;UV radiation – exposure to UV rays accelerates the breakdown of collagen leading to premature ageing, this is why it’s essential to protect our peepers! If you don’t wear sunnies every single day like you do your sunscreen, you should now!Smoking – smoking exposures your skin to extra oxidative stress, in turn damaging its collagen and elastin. Smoking also constricts the blood vessels under your eyes by blocking circulation to your blood vessels and depriving your skin of necessary vitamin A.Environmental factors - environmental factors, such as dry weather, wind, and pollution can all contribute to undereye ageing.Pulling repetitive expressions – well I’m definitely guilty of this! Facial expressions, like smiling, frowning, and furrowing your brow, can cause fine lines to develop prematurely around your delicate eye area. Eek!Even the way we sleep can have a negative impact on our eyes! What you might say? Yup, if you sleep with your face buried in your pillow (guilty as charged) you are likely to be more prone to premature fine lines, wrinkles and eye crepiness, than those that don’t! Aghhh. How can you improve undereye crepiness?Although crepey skin will not disappear overnight, it can be drastically improved with time, the right anti-aging products, as well as lifestyle changes. It can take weeks or even months to see results, but by following these top 10 tips you can bid adieu to that saggy, sullen, crepey skin under your eyes. Stay hydrated. All. The. Time. Yes, you’ve heard it a million times before, drink all the water. Hydration is key my friends. Make sure you are drinking enough water throughout the day (we’re talking 8 glasses minimum). When you drink water, it’s like giving your skin a drink from the inside out too (and that water has to nourish all your other vital organise too! Treat sunscreen like is your BFF Never underestimate the power of sunscreen. Those harmful UV rays are a major contributor to premature aging. So, slather on that sunscreen every morning, even on cloudy days. Your future self will thank you!Not a huge fan of sunscreen? We get it. Soo many sunscreens feel greasy, don’t smell great or simply don’t sit well on our skin, and then there are those thick white sunscreens that look like a paste when applied too! That’s why we love the ELES Luminous Defence Brightening Day Protection SPF 50. It’s not greasy but instead silky soft, the scent isn’t unpleasant, and it applies beautifully to my skin. And thanks to its formulation its helps nourish and restore skins luminosity too, not to mention it’s high SPF of 50! Invest in an eye cream rich in hyaluronic acid and use it day and night Investing in a good quality eye cream that's packed with hydrating and skin-loving ingredients including hyaluronic acid and peptides will do wonders for ageing eyes. Gently pat the product around your eyes morning and night for that extra boost of moisture and optimal results. For more on the benefits of using hyaluronic acid under your eyes and our 3 favourite eye treatments click here. Add a gemstone facial roller to your daily beauty routine The roller will, not only help reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles around the eyes, when used correctly, it can dramatically reduce puffiness by moving excess fluid around your eyes towards your lymph nodes where it filters out the toxins too. Cool right? To find out more about the facial rollers and how to use them click here. Introduce tea time for your eyes Tea isn’t just for drinking you know, it’s also good for soothing your eyes too! Try placing cold tea bags (caffeine free, herbal tea is best!) on your closed eyes for a few minutes. The tannins in tea can help tighten the skin and reduce puffiness too! Consider practicing eye massage Light massage with your ring finger can improve bloody circulation and actually help your skin appear smoother. Remember gentle, gentle though as applying too much pressure to already thin, delicate skin can have the adverse effect! Give your eyes a rest from screen time Increased time in front of your laptop and on your phone can reap havoc with your precious peepers. In fact, spending just two consecutive hours on a digital device can cause eyestrain or fatigue while overexposure to blue light also suppresses the release of melatonin, the hormone that regulates sleep, therefore disrupting our normal sleep pattern. And we all know poor sleep can lead to premature ageing, especially around the delicate eye area! Make healthy lifestyle choices Your overall health reflects on your skin, including the delicate eye area. Eat a balanced diet rich in antioxidants, vitamins, and omega-3 fatty acids. And if you're a smoker, consider kicking the habit – smoking accelerates skin aging like nobody's business. Using gentle cleansing is a must Be kind to your skin when you cleanse but also never skip on cleansing, it’s a must, just be sure to use a gentle, hydrating cleanser that doesn't strip away your skin's natural oils. Harsh cleansers can contribute to dryness and crepiness. Try Medicalia’s Gentle Cleanser. Introduce cold compress magic Incorporate cold compresses into your routine. Applying a cold, damp cloth or chilled spoons over your eyes for a few minutes can help reduce puffiness and refresh your skin. Keep skin hydrated Invest in a good hydrating mist. A quick spritz throughout the day can give your skin the moisture it craves, helping to minimize crepiness. We love Pevonia’s Hyaluronic Acid Hydra Mist. It’s one of my all time favourites. Make sure you get enough Zzzz’s Beauty sleep is real people! After all it’s not dubbed beauty sleep for nothing! Make sure you're getting enough restful sleep each night. Elevate your head slightly with an extra pillow to prevent fluid from pooling around your eyes, which can lead to puffiness and crepiness. Upgrade your pillow case If you are one for sleeping with your face in the pillow, you might want to consider switching up your cotton pillowcase to a silk or satin alternative instead.Silk has natural moisturising properties to retain moisture around the eyes. The dense weave of the silky-smooth fibres also keep moisture close to your skin, this extra moisture can help to reduce dark circles, fine lines and wrinkles.Just remember, Rome wasn’t built in day, and your under-eye skin won’t transform overnight either sadly (if only!) Be patient and be religious with these steps and you’ll be waking up to smoother, brighter and younger looking eyes soon!
Skin Blurring products - woman with flawless skin

The best makeup products to create photo filter inspired skin

by Jo Boyden on Aug 25 2023
I love a good photo filter, they have the ability to shave years off my face! No more fine lines and wrinkles, just smooth flawless skin instead! Well imagine being able to blur away those imperfections and create that soft-focus effect without using an app! Cue skin blurring makeup! That’s right, products that are actually formulated to give your skin that perfectly filtered look!Skin blurring products contain innovative ingredients that create a soft, diffused effect on our skin. These ingredients, such as silicone form a breathable invisible barrier on your skin’s surface filling in fine lines, pores and imperfections. They essentially provide a ‘smoothing’ canvas for your makeup, just like a filter does for your photos. Read on as we reveal our favourite skin blurring makeup products. Use these and you’ll not need to add a filter again! ELES Retexturizing Face PrimerPrimer may not be part of your daily makeup routine, in fact primers are a product many of us will forgo, but if you want to optimize the effects of your makeup and ensure it lasts all day (or night), this step shouldn't be skipped! And while makeup primers won’t enhance your skin quite like a bronzer, or conceal pesky pimples like a foundation, they are formulated to hide and blur imperfections! They are in fact touted as the photoshop of the makeup world! How they actually blur imperfections is down to two key ingredients: silicone particles which “fill in the gaps” on the surface of skin to even it out, and light-diffusing particles which scatter the light that hits the surface of the skin, creating an optical illusion that tricks the eye and makes pores and fine lines less visible. Sounds ideal right? This why we love ELES Cosmetics ELES Retexturizing Face Primer. Not only does this soothing, lightweight serum feel like actual silk on your skin, it basically helps protect, condition, smooth and blur out skin imperfections too! Want to look like a filtered goodness, and have makeup last the distance, try this! ELES Liquid Powder Mineral FoundationFor that filter-effect flawless finish you can achieve in photos, choosing the right foundation finish is key. A matte foundation is usually your best bet because it reflects less light, which makes pores less obvious and gives your skin a smoother look. It also cuts down on shine, so your makeup will look smooth and flawless as long as possible. We highly recommend ELES Cosmetics best-selling Liquid Powder Mineral Foundation. It’s a silky, mineral-enriched liquid foundation that glides on beautifully and sets to a soft, powder finish. Oh and it has broad spectrum sun protection too!If your skin is very dry though you might want to opt for a dewier finish. As well as choosing the right type of foundation for your skin, make sure you select the right colour too! For more information on how to choose the right foundation for your skin type click here.ELES Baked Finishing Powder in Diffused LightWhile your primer will blur imperfections and your foundation will provide you with a flawless base, a finishing power will complete the soft filtered finish to your skin!We love the ELES Baked Finishing Powder in Diffused Light. It’s the compact of miracles I tell you and will totally transform your skin in seconds! It acts itself like a photo filter on your skin, subtle enough for daily wear, yet gives you that truly “lit from within glow”!The microfine powder’s jet milled pigments bring a soft-focus finish for a blurring effect over imperfections and fine lines. The deeper tones in the powder enhance contours, while the highlight softly strobe and reflect away imperfections to make skin look professionally retouched and simply sublime every time! Incredibly light, it never gets chalky, weighs down the skin or even looks like your wearing powder, yet keeps any shine at bay. And all you have to do is apply your morning skincare, then simply brush a light layer all over your face with a makeup brush and watch your skin truly transform.

7 of the best ingredients to brighten your skin

by Jo Boyden on Aug 17 2023
If you’re fed up with having a dull, lacklustre complexion, it might be time to change up your skincare routine. By introducing a few simple steps, you can take your skin from drab to radiant in next to no time! And no we aren’t talking makeup, even though you can achieve a ‘brighter glow’ with a good stick illuminator or power highlighter, it’s the ‘lit from within’ glow we are all after which can only truly be achieved by using the right skincare products, skincare products formulated with the best skin brightening ingredients that is!From the infamous vitamin C to powerhouse retinol, keep reading as we countdown the best skincare ingredients to brighten your dull skin, 7 ingredients that will reduce dark spots, fade hyperpigmentation, clear pores, smooth skins surface and well, create an overall radiant complexion…. Vitamin CThis outstanding brightening ingredient is like a burst of sunshine for your skin. It’s a powerful antioxidant that fights off free radicals and prevents skin from developing photodamage and dark spots caused by sun exposure. It also evens out skin tone and promotes collagen production. This translates to a smoother, more radiant complexion that is free from dullness and discolouration. All hail Vitamin C!Try: Pevonia C Complex - How can we describe a serum that smells like a fresh orange, is silkier than silk and once applied leaves your skin looking as though you’ve just returned from a tropical island holiday? A bit over the top? Ok, maybe… but seriously, this is an addictive product and when applied beneath your regular moisturiser offers a vibrancy and luminosity rarely seen without a pound of makeup. Many clients comment that it has in fact helped eliminate the need for foundation! Pretty serious claim but true nonetheless. It’s seriously good stuff! So if dullness and tiredness are your skin woes, try this glow getter! You won’t be disappointed. Glycolic AcidDon’t let the word ‘acid’ scare you. Glycolic acid is a water soluble AHA (otherwise known as alpha-hydroxy acid) derived from sugar cane! It’s a type of natural exfoliant which dissolves the ‘glue’ that holds dead skin cells together, enabling them to be easily sloughed away revealing fresh, healthy skin underneath. And because of its small molecule size (glycolic acid actually has the smallest molecular size among all AHAs) it is able to penetrate into the deeper layers of the skin where it can help treat everything from fine lines to uneven texture, blemishes, and of course dullness!Try: Pevonia Renewing Glycocides Cream - If your skin is looking a tad dull and devitalised and you’re forever coveting that ‘insta-glow’, this product is your answer! Formulated with most renowned AHA glycolic acid combined with hydration hero Hyaluronic Acid, this treatment cream works to dissolve dead skin cells, improving skin texture and diminishing fine lines too! Skin resurfaces soother, brighter and younger…seriously. RetinolIf you’re searching for a way to turn back the clock and reveal a brighter, more youthful complexion, look no further than this holy grail anti-ageing wonder ingredient! A derivative of Vitamin A, retinol stimulates cell turnover, inhibits melanin production (which helps dimmish hyperpigmentation, dark spots and acne scars), boosts collagen production and reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. The results? Skin looks plump, firm and positively luminous!Try: Pevonia’s Micro-Retinol Line – this outstanding range of retinol products contains all-natural retinol, sourced from green leafy vegetables, paired with powerhouse duo Vitamin C and Vitamin E for optimal results! Each product in the range also utilizes a specialized technology to create micro-particles of retinol that get delivered deep into the epidermis. This means complete product absorption, no skin irritation and beautifully brighter skin.Tip: Apply in the evening, always wear SPF the morning after application, and avoid layering with exfoliating acids and vitamin c.Lactic AcidSimilarly to glycolic acid, lactic acid dissolves the upper layers of dead skin cells, kickstarting a process of renewal that means fresh new cells come to the surface and make skin appear brighter. Lactic acid has larger molecules than glycolic acid, so doesn’t penetrate as deeply and is less likely to irritate sensitive skin.Try: Phytomer Emergence Even Skin Tone Refining SerumThis lightweight, refining face serum formulated with a powerful AHA formulation, visibly reduces the appearances of imperfections. It diminishes the appearance of uneven pigmentation, acne, enlarged pores and dark spots, making your skin appear younger, brighter and healthier! EnzymesWhen it comes to exfoliation, papaya enzymes are the gentle giants (so if you have sensitive skin this is the way to go!) They provide skin with a very gentle form of exfoliation as they don’t adjust the skin’s pH. Enzymes literally dissolve dead skin cells by breaking down the keratin protein in the upper layers of your skin, revealing brighter skin underneath. It’s like a mini day spa for your face!Try: Pevonia Enzymo Spherides Peeling Cream- There’s something so wholesome about this peeling cream that smells so delicious you could eat it! Papaya and Pineapple have been selected for their enzyme peeling action, in other words, an action that gently digests away the dead skin cells instead of abrading or burning them off. So it’s gentle, really gentle, and it’s effective too! Nothing makes skin feel cleaner, lighter or more purified than this jar of goodness and it’s easy to use; simply apply a thin layer on cleansed skin, wet the fingertips with warm water, this will help to “wake up” the enzymes, then leave them to do their thing for 5-10 minutes, then rinse away. What you are left with is skin that looks reborn and with a lustrous sheen.Hyaluronic AcidBright skin doesn't just mean saying goodbye to dark spots – it's also about having plump, hydrated skin that looks youthful and alive. Hyaluronic acid is a master at retaining moisture, giving your skin that dewy, healthy glow that turns heads.Try: Vie Collection Mesoforce Hyaluronic acid vitamin mask containing a cocktail of vitamins and hyaluronic acid, this sensational mask reveals hydrated skin and a radiant complexion. With each application, skin is visibly smoothed and plumped. NiacinamideIf you're dealing with pesky dark spots, redness, or an uneven skin tone, niacinamide might just become your new best friend. This B-vitamin helps regulate sebum production, soothes inflammation, and minimizes the appearance of pores. The result? Clearer, more even skin that's positively glowing.Try: ELES Hydrating and Brightening Sheet Mask - if you’re dealing with dryness, dehydration, discolouration and dullness and could do with an instant pick-me-up, as well as boost of hydration, a sheet mask that contains nourishing and brightening ingredients like hyaluronic acid, vitamin c or niacinamide is the way to go! We can’t get enough of this sheet mask by ELES Cosmetics, it plumps the skin from within, radically reducing moisture loss, plus extra bonus it helps to prevent hyperpigmentation and give your skin a fabulous, healthy glow.Remember, achieving bright, glowing skin isn’t an overnight process. Consistency is key, so introduce these ingredients into your skincare routine gradually and listen to your skin’s needs. Whether you’re dealing with dark spots, dullness, or simply want to enhance your natural radiance, these 7 outstanding ingredients will have you covered!
Beauty Collective - WInter Beauty Essentials

6 winter beauty essentials we’re currently coveting

by Jo Boyden on Aug 10 2023
As someone who loves the warm, sultry months of summer, I always find it hard adjusting to the dry, cold air of winter, and this is coming from the person who spent 25 years living in the UK! I guess I just don’t like the way my skin goes from dewy and glowy to dehydrated and drab in just a matter of months.Cold days, zero humidity and artificial heating we all become accustomed to in winter, can put undue stress on our skin, leading to a dry, lifeless or super sensitive complexion! So when our skin starts to change, as a result of the change in season, it’s time to up the ante and incorporate new beauty products in your daily routine – winter companions your skin now needs. We’ve listed our go-tos, 6 beauty essentials we are currently coveting this winter, the products we know will take your skin from dry, dull and irritated to nourished, glowy and perfectly protected in next to no time. Pevonia Age Correction Marine Collagen CreamIf Hyaluronic Acid doesn’t already feature in your daily skincare routine, it should now! When it comes to dehydration, (which by the way is the no. 1 skincare issue during winter) the first product you should double down on is hyaluronic acid skincare! I love, love, love this product (in fact all year round!) and when combined with Pevonia’s Age Correction Intensifier Collagen & Myoxy Caviar, this powerful duo deliver radiant, moisture-rich skin.Pevonia Vitaminic ConcentrateI’m a huge advocate for face oils in winter. Not only do they calm and nourish skin, more importantly they strengthen the skin’s barrier which in winter can be seriously compromised. Due to their oily nature, face oils are wonderful for layering over the skin for intense hydration and protection.Remember face oils are for everyone, so don’t be scared to use them. For many years now I have turned to my faithful friend Pevonia’s Vitaminic Concentrate during the winter months and I can honestly say it’s a game-changer for my skin. It’s a luxurious dry oil (so absorbs very fast!) with a mandarin aroma which is to die for, and it radically combats excessive dryness, dehydration, and premature aging all in one!ELES Cosmetics Age Defying BB Cream 30If your skin is dull and lacking life you want to choose a foundation with hydrating and skin brightening benefits. After all your foundation should enhance your complexion, not mask it. It’s a multi-tasking miracle! It literally primes, tints, nourishes, protects, blurs and evens out your skin tone for a truly, natural, flawless finish. And thanks to its skin-loving ingredients over time it helps to promote cell health, strengthen elasticity, reduce the appearance of fine lines and restore that natural glow you once donned! What’s more, you’ll feel as though you aren’t even wearing makeup oh and it provides skin with the necessary SPF 30 sun protection which is just as imperative in the cooler winter months as it is in summer!ELES Cosmetics Baked BlushWe are all on a quest for that healthy youthful glow, especially in the winter months when it’s almost non-existent, so blush is a must! Just a few swipes of blush will not only add colour and depth to your cheeks but can make your entire complexion look healthier, and your skin more youthful. It adds an extra glow that bronzer and highlighter just can’t mimic. We highly recommend the ELES Baked Blush in a shade of your preference – my current favourite is Posey. It adds instant radiance to your cheeks thanks to its highly pigmented formula. Plus, it’s silky smooth and super nourishing, great for dull, dehydrated skin types!Just be sure to apply it correctly – use a Blush Brush and lift colour upwards towards your temple from the apple of your cheek. You won’t regret introducing this little staple!Pevonia Dry Oil Body MoisturiserOften, we become lazy when it our bodies in winter! Neglecting the areas of our skin we have become accustomed to looking after in warm summer months! However, during winter, the skin on our bodies becomes just as dry and lacklustre as the skin on our face! And I’m sure none of us like that uncomfortable, itchy feeling every evening when we’ve indulged in a hot shower or bath but not bothered to moisturise after! We get it though, not everyone is a fan of rich body moisturisers that can leave your skin feeling a little on the sticky side! Cue Pevonia’s international best-selling body product (and one of our all-time favourites) the Dry Oil Body Moisturiser! Even though it’s a ‘dry oil’ it literally indulges and nourishes skin without leaving an oily or greasy feeling, at all! This is because it absorbs immediately into skin leaving it feeling silky soft and supple after every application instead! If you apply it straight after the shower while your skin is still a little damp, you’ll lock in moisture and reap in the benefits too. Plus it’ll restore any moisture lost from standing under that super-hot water I mentioned earlier that many of us I’m sure love to indulge in, in the cold winter months! Guilty as charged!Phytomer Oleocreme Ultra-Nourishing Hand CreamOur hands often bear the brunt of the winter chill, this is why a good hand cream is an absolute essential for me in winter, and hey why shouldn’t we look after our hands as we do our face? The thing is before I discovered Phytomer’s Oleocreme Ultra-Nourishing Hand Cream I hated the feel of wearing hand cream and I’d want to wash my hands immediately after I’d applied it, so instead I used to bear the brunt of dry cracked skin! Not anymore! My favourite hand cream (and I’ve tried many) absorbs into skin immediately and intensely nourishes, soothes and softens my dry, damaged hands. I take it everywhere I go!
Beauty Collective - Jade Roller

Face Roller – the perfect skincare addition

by Jo Boyden on Aug 04 2023
Gemstone 'jade' rollers. They aren’t a new beauty trend, in fact people have been using this massage tool since the 7th century! Originated in ancient China, jade rollers were then considered to be a precious gemstone with anti-ageing superpowers, and jade ‘rolling’ was a skincare ritual reserved for the elite, however in recent years it appears that every skincare fanatic, beauty blogger and industry expert has started to rave about them, and not just jade rollers per se, but gemstone rollers, a range of face rollers made of semi-precious stones that include jade, but also amethyst, obsidian, rose quartz and more. If you haven’t tried using a jade roller, or gemstone roller should I say, you might be wondering what all the fuss is about, after all, do these tools of the trade really deserve a spot in your skincare routine? Especially when you feel overwhelmed with the products and tools you already use! In short though the answer is yes! And we are going to tell you why! Firstly what is a jade roller? A jade roller is a skincare tool made from a smooth, naturally cool gemstone called jade. It typically consists of a larger stone for the cheeks, forehead, and neck, and a smaller stone for more delicate areas like the under-eye and around the nose. But why should you consider adding this seemingly simple tool to your extensive collection of serums and creams? Because of their many benefits…. What are the benefits of using a jade roller? They are an amazing massage tool Facial massage is not only a way to indulge your skin, it also provides skin with numerous benefits. But instead of just using your fingers, what better way to massage your face than with a gemstone roller! The gentle massaging action not only feels amazing (like you’re enjoying a facial in your favourite spa), it also helps stimulate facial muscles (which can help tighten your skin), relieve tension, and improve blood circulation and lymphatic drainage. They help reduce puffiness The healing properties and natural coolness of the gemstone can help constrict blood vessels, effectively reducing puffiness and inflammation on your face, especially around the eyes and cheeks. No more tired, puffy face in the mornings! They help relieve stress and induce relaxation We all know that stress can take a toll on our skin, leading to breakouts and premature aging. But incorporating a jade roller into your skincare routine can be a game-changer in combating stress. The rhythmic rolling motion helps relax facial muscles, releasing tension and promoting an overall sense of calm. It's like giving your face a mini meditation session! They help boost the effectiveness of your skincare products If you are guilty of investing in expensive skincare products but maybe not seeing the desired results, here's a little secret: gemstone rollers can enhance your product absorption game. After applying your favourite serum, moisturiser or oil, simply roll the gemstone over your skin. The roller's massaging action allows those potent ingredients to penetrate deeper into your skin (really!) maximizing their effectiveness. Hello, glowing and nourished complexion! They help reduce the appearance of fine lines While we can't promise that using a gemstone roller will magically erase all your wrinkles, regular use can improve skin's elasticity, leading to a reduction in fine lines and wrinkles over time. They are a natural and non-invasive approach to younger looking skin In a world full of high-tech skincare gadgets and invasive procedures, gemstone rollers offer a refreshing alternative. They are gentle, natural, and suitable for most skin types. So, whether you have sensitive, oily, or combination skin, you can roll your way to healthier-looking skin without any worry! How to use a jade roller Thinking about incorporating a gemstone roller into your skincare routine? Ensure you use it gently, avoid applying excessive pressure, and clean it regularly to maintain hygiene. For best results, we recommend cleansing your skin first, then applying a small amount of serum or light oil to your skin. Take your jade roller and start at the chin. Using broad, long strokes roll the jade roller horizontally to the hairline - you should apply slight pressure but not so that it is "pulling" your skin. Then, from the nose, gently roll towards the ear - smoothing the skin under the eyes. Moving up, use the small end of the roller around the corner of the eye, rolling to the temples. Last up, place the roller above the eyebrow and push up towards the hairline. You can also finish by rolling horizontally from the middle of the forehead out towards the temples. How often should you use a Facial Roller? You can use a roller every day for optimum results. If there is a day where you feel like your skin is especially puffy, then morning and evening should work wonders! Don’t forget to regularly clean your roller. Since the tools are being used on your face and can easily spread bacteria, clean them with warm water and soap after use and store in a clean, dry place. From depuffing to boosting product absorption, and providing a relaxing experience, gemstone rollers are the perfect addition to your skincare routine. So, next time you're treating yourself to a self-care session, why not add a little jade rolling action to the mix? Your skin will thank you for it! dry to dewy skin

From Dry to Dewy: The best skincare routine for Dry Skin

by Jo Boyden on Jul 20 2023
Whether you love or loathe cold, winter weather, there is no mistaking the havoc it can cause on our skin. Ever dealt with (or perhaps currently experiencing) dry, flaky patches? Tightness even? Or perhaps it’s a dull lacklustre complexion you have become accustomed too of late! Well, we are here to tell you how you can transform that dry skin of yours to deliciously dewy in next to no time. All you need to do is follow the right skincare routine for dry skin! And stick to it daily. Morning skincare routine for dry skinWhen it comes to the best skincare routine for dry skin, the products you use in the morning will differ from those you apply at night. First and foremost you want to make sure you build a skincare routine rich in moisture, you need to rehydrate that parched skin of yours, but you want to ensure you then keep it nourished and hydrated too!Step 1 - Hydrating CleanserThe first step in any skincare routine is cleansing, but for us dry-skin folks, it's essential to use a gentle, hydrating cleanser. Look for cleansers with a creamy or oil-based formula that won't strip your skin of its natural oils. Harsh, foaming cleansers can be our arch-nemesis, so avoid those like the plague!Try Pevonia Hydrating Cleanser. Thanks to its outstanding combination of marine collagen, marine elastin, hyaluronic acid and glycerin, this nourishing, creamy textured cleanser thoroughly removes skin impurities and excess oil without any residue, all whilst helping to preserve your skin’s moisture too!N.B Exfoliation is essential too as you’ll want to rid your skin of any lingering dry, dead, skin cells to make way for the healthy, new cells patiently waiting underneath! How often you exfoliate will depend on the sensitivity of your skin though, so best to start with once a week and use a gentle exfoliating cleanser. This will keep skin brighter and balanced (without stripping away moisture) and will also assist in products such as your serum being able to fully penetrate your skin for optimal end results.Step 2 - Hyaluronic Acid SerumYou might we wondering if you really need a serum in your skincare routine because doesn’t your moisturiser offer enough nourishment? Well I’m here to tell you how necessary a serum really is! Serums are like a shot for the skin. Firstly they tend to perform above and beyond many regular skincare products, this is because they are developed with a higher concentration of targeted active ingredients. Secondly, the purpose of a serum is to target a specific concern. In our case dryness!Incorporate a hyaluronic acid serum into your morning skincare routine, and your skin will thank you for it! Believe me. Hyaluronic acid is a dry-skin superhero! This moisture-binding ingredient can hold up to 1000 times its weight in water, leaving your skin feeling hydrated and plump.Try Pevonia Hyaluronic Acid Hydra Serum. The ultimate for seriously thirsty skin, this serum eliminates dryness almost instantly as it quite literally blasts even the most dehydrated of complexions with a surge of moisture, maintaining surface hydration throughout the day. By adding moisture back into your skin, this serum immediately boosts skin’s suppleness and combats ageing in multiple ways thanks to its skin-plumping properties.Step 3 - Eye CreamIf you have dry skin, it's essential not to forget to incorporate an eye cream into your daily routine. The skin around the eye is some of the most delicate on the body, so it needs that little extra TLC that your moisturiser can not provide. In fact, the skin under our eyes is up to 1/10 thinner than other facial skin so it’s crucial to care delicately for this area to avoid any damage. While you might think your moisturiser will suffice, you’d be wrong! Like a moisturiser, an eye cream’s main objective is to deliver brightening and anti-ageing ingredients to the skin, however in a milder, gentler, safer dose. Moisturisers tend to have a much richer consistency in comparison to their counterpart which if applied under the eyes can prove too much, resulting in irritation, allergic reactions and milia. A hydrating eye cream can help prevent dryness, nourish already present crepiness, and combat signs of ageing such as fine lines, wrinkles, undereye puffiness and dark circles! Look for ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, vitamin c, vitamin c, shea butter, collagen and vitamin B as they will help restore the delicate skin and retain moisture.Try Pevonia Evolutive Eye Cream. This anti-ageing eye cream deeply nourishes and renews the delicate under eye area in multiple ways. Formulated with a powerful blend of anti-agers including hyaluronic acid, vitamin A and glycolic acid, it firms, smooths and hydrates dry, crepey skin.Step 4 - Nourishing MoisturiserA moisturiser not only infuses your skin with hydration but also helps trap in all of the products underneath it to make the ingredients even more effective. When it comes to dry skin, a super nourishing moisturiser rich in specific ingredients such as shea butter, ceramides, glycerin, natural oil (think avocado, jojoba, or rosehip) and hyaluronic acid is a must! It’ll help replenish your skin with the nourishment it craves.Try Phytomer Nutritionnelle Dry Skin Rescue Cream – this is a salvation for even the driest skin, bringing comfort, hydration and protection. Step 5 - SunscreenSunscreen is a non-negotiable step in any skincare routine, regardless of skin type. Sun damage is the no. 1 cause of premature ageing so what’s the point of spending money on all those anti-ageing skincare products if you undo all the good by not being religious with your sunscreen application! Protecting your skin from sun damage will make all your other skin care products more effective!Choose a lightweight sunscreen that won't clog pores or cause breakouts. Go for a chemical or mineral sunscreen of at least SPF 30 (preferably 50). Sun damage can worsen dryness, so don't forget this crucial step, even on cloudy days.Try ELES Luminous Defence Brightening Day Protection 50+ It’s super lightweight and full of great ingredients that prevent hyper-pigmentation and dehydration. It also gives you a bit of glow which is a bonus that many sunscreens don’t provide.Step 6 - Facial MistFor that extra boost of cooling hydration and to lock in all those skincare ingredients throughout the day a facial mist is a must!Try Pevonia Hyaluronic Acid Hydra Mist This product is a dream. It provides the perfect spritz to replenish tired, dry or tight skin. As well as Hyaluronic Acid, it’s formulated with a blend of ultra-calming Chamomile, Aloe, Green Tea and aromatic essential oils, making this powerhouse product ideal for all skin types, especially dehydrated, irritated, and ageing skin! However should your skin be on the sensitive side, a little itchy or irritated even, it will work its magic to calm, nurture and alleviate too. Night skincare routine for dry skin Step 1 - CleanserFirst thing you’ll likely want to do (and should do) after a long day is remove the days makeup and grime from your face with a good cleanser or face wash. Should you wish to double cleanse, you can do that too!Try using an oil cleanser first followed by a cream cleanser to refresh your skin and leave a dewy finish.Step 2 - Hydrating TonerFollow your face wash with a hydrating toner. Unfortunately, toners are often the forgotten skincare product, usually because people don’t understand their purpose, but they are in fact an essential product in any skincare routine! Why? Because a good toner will not only remove any excess makeup and grime that your cleanser might have missed but it will also prep your skin for the goodness that follows (we are talking ingredients in the rest of your skin care routine!) The best toner for dry skin will pump up hydration but also restore skin, balance pH too.Opt for an alcohol-free, hydrating toner that contains ingredients such as hyaluronic acid and glycerin to lock in moisture as well as plump up your skin. Pat it on gently with your hands or use a soft cotton pad.Try Pevonia Hydrating Toner – Formulated with Hyaluronic Acid, Licorice, and Vitamin E, it works to hydrate, revive and fully refresh the skin. Great for anyone with worried about ageing, dehydration or devitalised skin. Step 3 – face mask With so many steps in your daily skincare routine, you might be wondering if masking is really another necessary step, after all, what more can this product do for your skin that your cleanser, toner, exfoliator, serum and moisturiser hasn’t already done? Well, the answer to that is a lot actually! Face masks are in fact an essential part of any skin care routine, and for very good reason. Not only do they help protect your skin from environmental pollutants and other irritants, but they also help to keep skin looking and feeling healthy. They are also a great way to give your skin a boost of nourishment and help to target any skin concerns you may have too., dry skin in this case!Treat yourself to a hydrating face mask once or twice a week. Sheet masks, gel masks and cream masks formulated with ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, aloe vera and jojoba oil can work wonders for dry skin. Sit back, relax, and let the mask work its magic!Try Vie Collection Mesoforce Hyaluronic Acid Vitamin Mask. This revitalizing and nourishing mask takes its inspiration from mesotherapy to visibly revitalize the skin. Its formula contains a cocktail of vitamins and hyaluronic acid that ensure beautifully nourished, plumped and radiant skin after every application.Step 4 – Brightening SerumAt night you can either opt for your hyaluronic acid serum again, or change it up with a good vitamin C serum. After all you want to brighten that dull complexion of yours as well and rehydrate it.Try Pevonia Vitamin C Complexe. This product is a-mazing for that perfect pick-me-up. Vitamin C and hydration hero hyaluronic acid, work together to quite literally drench skin with repairing antioxidants, deeply nourishing skin while correcting photo-damage. Not only does it have the most beautiful citrus aroma, when applied skin looks instantly brighter and dewier too!Step 5 - Night CreamWhile you might well love your everyday moisturiser, it’s likely it’s not providing enough nourishment for your skin at night. This is because at night, our skin goes into repair and regeneration mode so a richer night cream formulated with specific ingredients, can make all the difference. In fact, a good night cream will not only sooth and calm skin while you sleep, but also deliver lasting moisture while addressing common skin concerns such as moisture loss and skin ageing! They also help in the skin repair and renewal process by improving cell turnover!Try Phytomer Night Recharge Youth Enhancing Cream. This beautifully rich textured cream literally cocoons skin while restoring youthful vitality with a nourishing blend of active marine botanicals, alpha hydroxy acids and conditioning oils.Step 6 - Face OilFor an extra boost of hydration, face oils are a game-changer. Apply a few drops of face oil specifically designed to combat dryness over your moisturiser to seal in moisture and goodness all night long. Not only will your skin drink it up, but you’ll also wake to a radiant, dewy complexion come morning!Try Pevonia Vitaminic Concentrate – Fast-absorbing, this soothing, silky anti-oxidant oil radically combats premature ageing, dehydration, and excessive dryness by locking in hydration and delivering moisture that stays! So you’ll wake up to smooth, supple, and seriously glowy skin every morning. Outstanding stuff! Consistency is key, so stick to this routine and say goodbye to dry, parched, patchy skin for good! Just remember though that skincare isn't just about what you put on your skin—it's also about what you put in your body. Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water and incorporating water-rich fruits and veggies into your diet.

How to stop makeup from creasing under your eyes

by Jo Boyden on Jun 22 2023
Makeup creasing under my eyes is a pet hate of mine. We want to conceal those fine lines and dark under eye circles, but why does the concealer that’s supposed to help conceal, end up creasing and in turn exacerbating undereye signs of ageing!?Well if you are tired of dealing with those pesky creases under your eyes, ruining your flawless makeup look and well ageing you, you’ve come to the right place! Keep reading for the best tips and tricks so those under eye creases are no more! Hydrate and prep Before you even think about reaching for your makeup, it's crucial to hydrate and prep your under-eye area properly. Well-hydrated skin is more supple and less prone to creasing. Start by gently cleansing your skin, next apply a lightweight, nourishing eye cream (using an eye cream instead of your everyday moisturiser is imperative as it’s been specifically formulated for the delicate under-eye area.)To learn more about why you should use an eye cream instead of your moisturiser click here.Allow eye cream to absorb fully before moving on to the next step.Try: Age Correction Eye Contour. This power repair eye contour gives tired, ageing eyes the burst of hydration they need! Deeply nourishing thanks to its combination of marine collagen, marine elastin and hyaluronic acid, it targets signs of fatigue, visibly reducing puffiness, fine lines and wrinkles. What more could you want? It’s time to prime A good primer is a game-changer when it comes to your makeup! Creating an extra layer between your skin and makeup, primers are used to plump fine lines, blur blemishes, smooth skin, and help makeup last all day without caking, creasing or the need for constant touch-ups. They really are key to achieving smooth, flawless skin that’s perfectly prepped for your concealer and foundation!Look for a primer rich in nourishing vitamins and silica. Silica is a multi-functional ingredient and acts as an absorbing agent, and anti-creasing and caking agent!Apply a small amount onto your under-eye area and blend it in gently with your ring finger. This will help create a smooth surface for your concealer and eyeshadow.Try: ELES Retexturizing Face Primer. Not only does this soothing, lightweight serum feel like actual silk on your skin, it basically helps protect, condition, smooth and blur out skin imperfections too! Want to look like a filtered goodness, and have makeup last the distance, try this! Choose the correct concealer A good concealer will be your best friend when it comes to camouflaging dark circles! There are however a myriad of concealers out there, and selecting the right one is crucial when it comes to preventing under-eye creasing. Opt for a hydrating, lightweight, liquid or cream formula that has been specifically formulated for the delicate under-eye area. Avoid thick and heavy formulas, as they tend to settle into fine lines and creases. It's also essential to choose a shade that matches your skin tone, as a lighter shade can actually accentuate creases.Try ELES Dual Action Concealer, you won’t be disappointed! Now you need to apply it correctly While it very tempting to layer on that concealer to mask those dark circles, piling it on is the number one cause of creasing (and caking!) You need to instead apply sparingly! Firstly dot the concealer under your eyes, then use a small concealer brush or your fingertips, to gently blend it into the skin. Just remember, how you apply your concealer plays a vital role in preventing creasing! Make sure you blend the concealer evenly, paying attention to the inner corners and the outer edges. And try to avoid any excessive tugging or pulling at the skin too, as this can exacerbate the appearance of wrinkles and contribute to creasing. Set your makeup Setting your makeup is a crucial step to prevent creasing. After you've applied your concealer and finished your eye makeup, lightly dust a small amount of translucent powder over the under-eye area. Be careful not to go overboard with the powder, as excessive product can settle into lines and create a cakey appearance. Using a powder brush, gently press the powder onto the skin instead of swiping it.Try: ELES HD Translucent Powder. This 100% mineral silica powder mattifies the skin without caking or creasing, and softens the appearance of imperfections. It also absorbs any unwanted excess oil. Bonus! Avoid excess moisture Throughout the day, excess moisture can cause your makeup to crease. To combat this, gently blot your under-eye area with a tissue or blotting paper to remove any excess oil or sweat. Remember to pat instead of rubbing to avoid disrupting your makeup. Touch up strategically If you notice any creasing or fading throughout the day, don't fret! Instead of piling on more product, opt for a targeted touch-up. Gently dab a tiny amount of concealer onto the creased area using your ring finger and blend it in carefully. This method will help freshen up your makeup without creating a cakey or heavy look. Now you're armed with the knowledge and tips to keep those annoying under-eye creases at bay!
Beauty Collective - Jo Boyden - Ageless Skin Collagen Mask

I’ve worked in the skincare industry for 22 years, these are the beauty products I’m never without

by Jo Boyden on Jun 21 2023
If you read our blog, you’ll know me well, I’ve been answering your burning questions, talking about the latest trends and writing about all things beauty for years now. In fact I’ve been working at Beauty Collective as their Marketing, PR and Content Manager for 15 years, and have been in the industry for 22! (Eek that makes me sound old!) In that time I have had the fortune (yes I’m very lucky) to trial many a makeup and skincare product, from the newest formulations, to the beauty classics that have stood the test of time! And while it’s always exciting to get my hands on the latest launches, there are certain products I can’t get enough of, the ones I go back to time and time again – all because they keep my thirsty and 43-year-old skin looking younger! We’re talking hydrated, luminous, soft, supple and healthy! Interested in what they are? Keep reading….ELES Luminous Defence Brightening Day Protection SPF 50You all know I like to harp on about the importance of sunscreen! Afterall, it’s the only true anti-ageing product out there! Without wearing it, and I’m talking every. single. day (yep even in winter) you will age prematurely! There is no doubt about that. The thing is soo many sunscreens feel greasy, don’t smell great or simply don’t sit well on our skin, and then there are those thick white sunscreens that look like a thick paste so it’s not surprising that many of us shy away from wearing this essential product daily! The great news is my first recommendation isn’t any of those things. It’s not greasy but instead silky soft, the scent isn’t unpleasant, and it applies beautifully to my skin.ELES Age-Defying BB Cream 30If you’re still not sold on the ELES Luminous Defence Brightening Day Protection, because let’s face it, it’s still a sun ‘cream’ another love of mine is the ELES BB Cream 30. Instead of slathering my skin in foundation, daily I opt for wearing this beauty. It’s lightweight and is your primer, moisturiser, sunscreen and foundation in one, plus it has SPF of 30 so you can get away with wearing just this instead of having to worry about sunscreen and then your foundation! To learn more about this best-selling beauty read my extensive review here.Pevonia Age Correction Intensifier Collagen and Myoxy CaviarI have been obsessed with this serum for 15 years now and use it religiously. I LOVE foaming cleansers but usually they are formulated for oily skin types so if you have dry skin like me, they can dry it out even more!! But not this one. It’s a lightweight oil cleanser, which has a gel like consistency but when mixed with water foams into a luxurious lather! It’s alcohol and soap free (so not drying at all) and instead rich in lipids for supreme nourishment. But most importantly it cleanses skin like a dream, leaving it radiantly refreshed, soft and supple after every use. Genius.Phytomer Night Recharge Youth Enhancing CreamI love a good nourishing night cream and this one has become my firm favourite. Makeup for the over 40’s: How to prep skin for a flawless finish

by Jo Boyden on Jun 15 2023
As we age, our once smooth and plump skin starts to dramatically change, we experience loss of elasticity, increased dryness, fine lines and wrinkles and age spots. Some of us even become more prone to blemishes and breakouts (eek!) But this doesn’t mean we can’t rock a stunning makeup look like we once did! It just means we need to change tactics. Preparing mature skin for makeup requires a somewhat different approach to ensure we can still achieve that much desired flawless and radiance look! Read on as we talk skin prep for the over 40’s, including tips and techniques to help keep makeup looking natural and fresh all day long! Start skin prep with a thorough cleanse Before you begin your makeup routine, it’s crucial that skin is cleansed thoroughly. You want to make sure any impurities, excess oil or residual makeup even, has been removed so that your makeup adheres to your skin better, and lasts longer! Look for a hydrating cleanser specifically designed to target ageing skin, or a gentle creamy cleanser if your skin tends to be on the more sensitive side.We highly recommend Pevonia’s Hydrating CleanserN.B remember regular exfoliation is also important as it can help promote cell turnover and improve the texture of mature skin. Exfoliate once or twice weekly with a gentle exfoliating cleanser. If you have sensitive skin and wish to steer clear of physical exfoliators (exfoliators with the “bits” in them) try a chemical of enzyme exfoliator. We can’t get enough of Phytomer’s Vegetal Exfoliant with Natural Enzymes Hydration, Hydration, Hydration If we are talking makeup application for the over 50’s (over 40’s even) the most imperative step in prepping skin, is to hydrate, hydrate, hydrate! For that flawless makeup finish we all want to achieve, you need to create the perfect canvas, and you can’t do that if your skin is patchy and parched (which sadly is a thing as we age). Invest in a high-quality serum and moisturiser that will nourish and plumps the skin. Look for products containing hyaluronic acid, ceramides and antioxidants to boost hydration and combat signs of ageing. Using a gemstone facial roller be extremely beneficial too.Additionally, consider using a hydrating facial mist rich in hyaluronic acid to boost hydration levels throughout the day.We love Pevonia’s Hyaluronic Acid Hydra Mist Don’t forget your sunscreen Next. it’s time for the sunscreen. No matter what your age, sunscreen is a non-negotiable! You can spend all the money in the world on skincare, but if you don’t use it in conjunction with sunscreen you may as well be pouring it down the drain!A great option for sunscreen for mature skin is ELES Luminous Defence Brightening Day protection SPF 50. Primer is a must A primer can work wonders for mature skin by filling in fine lines and wrinkles, blurring imperfections, and ensuring longer-lasting makeup. In fact I’d safely save it will become your secret weapon when it comes to prepping mature skin for makeup. Look for a silicone-based primer that offers a smoothing effect without clogging pores. Apply it evenly to your face after moisturizing, focusing on areas prone to fine lines, such as around the eyes and mouth. We LOVE ELES’s range of face primers. For mature skin we highly recommend ELES Retexture Crème Face Primer Choose the Right Foundation Choosing the right foundation for mature skin can make a world of difference. You might well be a fan of matte foundations, but generally heavy matte formulas can settle into creases, accentuating dry patches and fine lines! As we age it’s better to opt for lightweight, hydrating foundations with a dewy or satin finish. Additionally, consider using a colour-correcting foundation to counteract any redness or discoloration like ELES Luminous CC Cream 20 (which has the added bonus of sunscreen! What’s more! For the month of June, when you purchase an ELES Luminous CC Cream 20 or best-selling Age-Defying BB Cream 30 you’ll receive a FREE Sheet Mask. Plus you get to choose from one of three sheet masks specifically designed to counteract ageing – Youth Recovery, Calming and Soothing or Hydrating and Brightening. Concealing and Highlighting A good concealer will be your best friend when it comes to camouflaging dark circles, ages spots or any areas of your face that needs that little bit of extra coverage. To address these issues, choose a creamy, hydrating concealer and make sure it matches your skin tone. Apply it sparingly with a small brush or your fingertips, gently blending it into the skin. Make sure you avoid any excessive tugging or pulling, as it can exacerbate the appearance of wrinkles.Try ELES Dual Action Concealer, you won’t be disappointed!N.B For a youthful, lifted effect, apply a light-reflecting concealer or highlighter to the inner corners of your eyes, brow bone, and cheekbones. Set Makeup with a Finishing Powder To prolong the longevity of your makeup without sacrificing the dewy finish, lightly dust a translucent powder only on areas prone to excess oil, such as the T-zone. Avoid applying it to drier areas, as it can accentuate fine lines. Use a fluffy brush for a light application, ensuring your skin retains its natural radiance.Try ELES NEW Translucent Powder Always add colour for that youthful healthy glow Another sign of ageing is a dull and uneven complexion! Cue the magic of a good blush and/or bronzer. Simple apply a subtle blush shade to the apples of your cheeks for that youthful flushed affect and lightly dust bronzer along your cheekbones and temples to add warmth and dimension.Choose shades that complement your skin tone and always remember less is more! Create mature eyes that pop For your eyes, keep it simple and elegant. Use neutral eyeshadows that enhance your natural beauty. Avoid heavy or overly shimmery shadows, as they can emphasize creases. A soft, smudged eyeliner and a few coats of mascara will define your eyes without overpowering them. Also line the inner rim of your lower lash line or waterline as it’s otherwise known with a white pencil a waterline liner! (We recommend ELES’s Waterline liner). By doing so it’ll immediately open up your eyes as well as make the whites of your eyes look whiter (synonymous with younger looking eyes!)For more on ageing eyes and the best tips and tricks to care for them click here. Complete the look with luscious lips As we age our lips loose their colour and get thinner and dryer too! so you’ll want to be armed with a good hydrating and volumizing lip product like ELES Velvet Satin Lipstick.Choose colours that flatter your complexion and make you feel happy and confident.Remember, the key to flawless makeup is not only the products you use but also the techniques you employ. Be gentle with your skin, blend your products seamlessly and never overdo your makeup.

What is probiotic skincare and is it effective?

by Jo Boyden on Jun 09 2023
If you keep up with the latest beauty trends, you’ve probably heard about probiotic skincare. It’s been making a buss in the beauty world for a few years now, but how exactly are probiotics good for your skin you might be wondering? Well wonder no more! We’re here to tell you all about probiotic skincare, and why this trend has taken the beauty industry by storm.Firstly though, what are probiotics?Probiotics are living microorganisms such as bacteria or yeast that are good for your health, particularly your digestive system, in fact they are usually associated with promoting gut health and are commonly referred to as “good” or “friendly” bacteria. How are probiotics good for the skin?Probiotics work their magic by helping to balance the skin's natural microbiome, which is essentially a collection of billions of microorganisms living on its surface (eek!) Just like in our digestive system, a healthy balance of bacteria on the skin is crucial for maintaining a strong and resilient barrier against external aggressors. Why choose probiotic skincare?Probiotic skincare offers many benefits for your skin, not matter your skin type. Here are a few reasons why we love probiotic skincare; Probiotic skincare is essential for restoring balance Modern lifestyles, environmental factors, and harsh skincare products can disrupt the delicate balance of our skin's microbiome. Probiotics help replenish and maintain a diverse and healthy microbial community, which in turn supports a stronger skin barrier and a more radiant complexion. It’s great for soothing sensitive skin If you struggle with sensitive or reactive skin, probiotics might become your new best friend. Probiotics can alleviate redness, inflammation, and irritation, providing a soothing effect on the skin. By calming down angry skin, probiotics offer relief to those with conditions like eczema or rosacea. It helps fight acne and blemishes Acne-prone skin often suffers from an imbalance in the microbiome, leading to breakouts and unwanted blemishes. Probiotics have the ability to combat acne by inhibiting the growth of harmful bacteria, reducing inflammation, and promoting a healthier skin environment. Probiotics in skincare help to counteract signs of ageing As we age, our skin's microbiome undergoes changes that contribute to the signs of aging. Probiotics have shown promise in supporting collagen production, improving skin elasticity, and reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. They also aid in maintaining moisture levels, giving you a more youthful and plump complexion. Probiotics in skincare actually enhances the efficiency of other active ingredients Adding probiotics to skincare formulations can boost the effectiveness of other active ingredients. Probiotics help create a good environment for these actives to work optimally, ensuring you get the most out of your skincare routine. Now that you know why probiotics are the talk of the town, how can you incorporate them into your skincare routine?Whether you're looking to restore balance, soothe sensitive skin, combat acne, or achieve a more youthful complexion, probiotic skincare will help! face mapping - woman checking her pimples and breakouts

Breakouts? Why you’re getting reoccurring pimples

by Jo Boyden on Jun 02 2023
I’m pretty certain when I say, we’ve likely all suffered from pimples many a time in our lives, and just when you think they are behind you, you suddenly get another bout of unwanted blemishes! Pimples are actually a very common skin concern for people of all ages and skin types. But have you ever wondered why those pesky pimples keep cropping up, even when we are in our 40’s, 50’s and older even? And often in specific areas of our face too! Maybe you tend to get them around your chin more? Or on your nose or forehead perhaps?Well, according to the ancient Chinese practice of face mapping, the location of your pimples can actually tell you a lot about your overall health. That’s right dependant on where your pimples are appearing on your face, they can actually mean different things, from digestive issues to hormonal fluctuation. Keep reading to learn all about the importance of face mapping, so next time you get an outbreak you’ll know what the cause may be and how you can help to fix it. Firstly though, what is face mapping?Face mapping is an ancient Chinese and Ayurvedic practice that links different “zones” of the face (eg cheeks, chin, forehead) to different organs or glands in the body. The theory is that when there is an imbalance or toxicity in the body (in one of the different organs), it can manifest as pimples in the corresponding zone on the face. What are the different zones and what do pimples in these areas mean? The foreheadIf you often find yourself battling pimples in this area, it could be an indicator of digestive issues. Take a closer look at your diet, up the fibre and make sure you're staying hydrated too. Cutting back on alcohol, sugar and processed foods and incorporating more fruits and veggies could help clear up those forehead blemishes. Be sure to chew food well and take probiotics too.Between the browsBlemishes between the brows can be the sign of an overloaded liver. Liver issues can be indicative of sleep deprivation, heightened emotions (stress, sadness, anger, worry), or an excess of sugar, fats or alcohol in your diet. Your lymphatic circulation may also be stagnant and could use a little boost so try starting your morning with a hot water with lemon, drink plenty of fluids throughout the day, decrease your intake of spicy foods, alcohol, dairy, and sorry to say it, coffee too! And up the essential fatty acids, omega 3 and 6 in your diet, avocado and olive oil on your salad will help. Finally rest up, like you, your liver needs plenty of time to rest and recuperate.TemplesThe corners of the forehead, by the temples represent the kidneys.Lack of sleep, a poor diet and dehydration impacts our kidney function. Another factor may be a mineral deficiency, specifically iron too. To help, take proactive steps to support the kidneys, including decreasing stress, consuming enough fluids (spring water, coconut water, herbal tea, hydrolytes!), making sure you get enough sleep, also be mindful of your diet (eat ample amounts of fruits and vegetables and try to stay away from too much sodium.CheeksIf you notice pimples frequently appearing on your cheeks, it could indicate respiratory issues or allergies, since this area is linked to your lungs. The most common food triggers are dairy, soy, gluten, processed sugar and alcohol – try to eliminate these groups for a month to see how your body reacts with the change and replace with leafy green goodness. Also, pay attention to the air quality in your environment, as pollutants can wreak havoc on your skin.JawlineBreakouts in this area are often linked to hormonal fluctuations, particularly in women. It's not uncommon to experience these pimples around your menstrual cycle. However, persistent acne along the jawline might also be connected to polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) or digestive problems so you might want to get a blood test so that your doctor can get a better understanding of your hormonal levels. This will also help to determine how well your thyroid is functioning too.If you find you do get hormonal breakouts, there are many things you can do to help. Try eliminating caffeine (ok this might be a big ask, so at least try to cut it down), as well as cutting out processed sugar, dried fruit, bread, wine, diary, white flour, gluten, soy, fried foods, peanut butter and fruits like grapes and bananas (high sugar content). Eating a diet rich in omega-3 foods will instead be very beneficial, as will managing stress levels. Taking vitamin D3 supplements and getting regular exercise and adequate sleep can work wonders for bringing your hormones back to their natural balance as well!ChinIf you are prone to pimples on your chin, it could be related to your stomach. Just be sure to step up your fibre intake, avoid hydrogenated fats and processed sugar and try to be vigilant with the times you eat (no eating dinner just before bedtime!)NoseGetting pimples on your nose can be linked to your heart and can sometimes indicate high blood pressure, so get your blood pressure checked if you’re concerned. Look into ways of lowering your cholesterol too like replacing “bad fats” with “good fats” such as Omegas 3 and 6 found in nuts, avocados, fish and flax seed. You may also have a Vitamin B deficiency so consider a vitamin supplement and try to avoid spicy foods.Tip: Massage the area around your nose to improve circulation. While face mapping can provide insights into your pimples underlying causes, it’s essential to adopt some general habits for maintaining healthy skin too. Here are a few tips to get you started: Keep skin beautifully cleansed If we don’t cleanse (and exfoliate) out skin our pores can become clogged with dead skin cells, excess oil and dirt. When a pore gets clogged, it provides the perfect environment for bacteria to thrive and pimples to form! So be sure to keep your face clean by washing it twice a day with a gentle cleanser suitable for your skin type and exfoliate at least once a week. Adopt healthy skincare habits Your skincare routine and habits can play a significant role in the appearance of pimples. Harsh or irritating products can disrupt the skin’s natural balance, leading to inflammation and breakouts. While cleansing and exfoliating is imperative, over-washing or over-exfoliating can strip away essential oils, prompting your skin to produce more sebum as a defence mechanism. Use natural products free of harsh irritants and adopt a healthy daily skincare routine. Don’t pick or squeeze your pimples! As tempting as it may be, avoid picking or popping your pimples, as it can lead to scarring and more breakouts. Eat a balanced diet Studies suggest there is a link between diet and pimples. Consuming sugary and processed foods may increase insulin levels, leading to increased sebum production and acne formation. Additionally, dairy products and foods rich in saturated fats have also been associated with blemish breakouts. Therefore maintaining a balanced diet rich in an array of colourful fruits and veggies can promote overall skin health. Stay hydrated Drink enough water (and herbal tea) consistency throughout the day to keep skin hydrated and flush out those unwanted toxins. Manage stress Stress can be a big indicator of unwanted breakouts. Try and find ways to manage stress. Exercise daily, even if only for a brisk walk, practice meditation, indulge in a good book, relax and listen to your favourite music or simply engage in activities you enjoy that allow you to switch off from stress. Get enough sleep I know we say this time and time again, and I need to practice what I preach, but sleep is SO important, it’s the second most important thing after water. Sleep is not only a time for our body to recoup, but the time that our skin repairs and regenerates too. So as hard as it may be sometimes or impossible if you have a heavy workload, try and put that laptop down, turn off the TV or stop scrolling through Facebook for an evening, and get that quality sleep your body needs and deserves. Just remember your face is a little like a mirror reflecting what’s going on inside your body! By understanding the principles of face mapping you can get a better understanding of your overall health! By paying attention to the specific location of your pimples, you can address any underlying issues. Remember clear skin is not just about how you care for it topically, it’s about nourishing from within too!Want to learn more about the type of pimples you have and how to treat them? Click here. Pre-mature ageing

9 tips for improving your skin’s elasticity

by Jo Boyden on May 24 2023
We are all on the constant quest for youthful and supple skin, after all who doesn’t want to look that little bit younger for a long as possible right? Unfortunately as we age our skin does naturally loose it’s elasticity though (which is what makes it look younger and firmer!) and while there is no stopping this from happening, after all ageing is inevitable, there are several things we can do to improve our skin’s elasticity, and prevent premature ageing. Keep reading as we reveal 9 steps you should follow daily.Firstly though, what exactly is elasticity?Elasticity is our skin’s ability to stretch and then literally bounce to its original shape. It’s what gives our skin that smooth, supple texture. When we’re young, our skin is naturally more elastic, but as we age our production of both elastin and collagen (the proteins responsible for skin elasticity) slows down. This can lead to skin sagging, wrinkles and loss of firmness! What causes our skin to prematurely lose elasticity?Collagen and Elastin begins to decline prematurely due to a number of factors. These include genetics, sun exposure, poor nutrition, pollution and smoking. The good news is that there are a few things you can do to improve your skin’s elasticity, keep reading… Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate! And I’m talking the surface of your skin and the water you congest Staying hydrated is crucial for overall skin health, including its elasticity. Drinking enough water helps to keep your skin cells plump and hydrated, which in turn promotes elasticity. Aim for at least eight glasses of water per day and incorporate hydrating foods like watermelon, cucumbers, and oranges into your diet.As well as ingesting water to hydrate your skin you also want to hydrate skin topically! The best way to do this is to use skincare products such as moisturisers and serums rich in hydration hero hyaluronic acid! Hyaluronic acid has the ability to deeply penetrate skin to instantly deliver a supple, dewy complexion in a matter of seconds! In fact, it literally binds moisture to skin cells to keep skin smooth, firm, plump, and undeniably radiant! The extra moisture also reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles! For everything you need to know about hyaluronic acid and the best hyaluronic acid skincare products, click here. Use skin firming products If you’re worried about ageing and want to improve your skin’s elasticity you need to make sure that your skincare routine incorporates skincare ingredients such as elastin, collagen, peptides, and vitamin c.And we mustn’t forget retinol! Touted the “holy grail of the skincare world” retinol has been shown to boost collagen production and improve skin elasticity. You can find retinol in many skincare products, from creams to serums to prescription-strength options. Just be sure to start slowly and follow the instructions carefully, as retinol can be irritating to some people's skin.We can’t recommend more highly the Pevonia Micro Retinol collection. The collection utilizes a specialized technology to create micro-particles of retinol that get delivered deep into the epidermis. This means complete product absorption, no skin irritation and immediate results.Every product in the Micro Retinol Line contains all-natural micro-retinol®, sourced from green leafy vegetables, combined with a powerhouse duo of vitamin C and vitamin E. The addition of vitamins c and e not only ensures micro-retinol’s stability, but also that the skin’s nutrients and density are renewed and preserved. To find out more about the many benefits of retinol, how to use it and the best retinol products click here. Exfoliate Exfoliating has many benefits including removing dead skin cells, clearing up clogged pores, and rejuvenating flaky skin. After long-term exfoliating, it will help to increase collagen production, resulting in better skin elasticity and a minimized appearance of fine lines. Massage skin regularly Massaging your skin helps to stimulate blood flow and collagen production. Because it stimulates the facial muscles, a massage is like a mini-workout for your face. It engorges the muscles with blood to oxygenate the skin cells and gives “tone” to your muscles.Massage your face with your favourite moisturiser or try massaging with a night oil before bed. You can massage with your fingers or better still use a gemstone facial roller. You won’t regret it! Nourish your skin from within with a balanced diet What you put into your body reflects on your skin. Fact. To improve skin elasticity, focus on a well-balanced diet rich in essential nutrients. Include foods high in vitamins, minerals and antioxidants, such as berries, leafy greens, avocado and nuts, as they help protect your skin from free radicals that can damage collagen and elastin fibres, crucial for maintaining elasticity! And try to avoid excessive consumption of processed foods, refined sugars, and unhealthy fats, as they can contribute to inflammation and accelerate the aging process. Eek! Sun protection is key We can't stress this enough! Sun damage is one of THE biggest contributors to a loss in skin elasticity. Overexposure to the sun's rays can accelerate collagen breakdown, which leads to loss of skin elasticity and subsequent saggy skin - aghh Make sunscreen (with a broad spectrum of SPF 30 or higher) your best friend, and wear it every. single. day, come rain, hail or shine! Additionally, wear protective clothing, a wide-brimmed hat, and sunglasses to further shield your skin from sun damage. Get moving Exercise does wonders for your overall well-being, and it turns out, it's fantastic for your skin too! Engaging in regular physical activity boosts blood circulation, delivering oxygen and nutrients to your skin cells. This increased circulation aids in collagen production and supports skin elasticity. So, find an activity you enjoy – whether it's jogging, dancing, or yoga – and make it a part of your daily routine. Aim for at least 30 minutes of moderate exercise most days of the week. Get enough zzzz’s We all know that getting enough sleep is important for our overall health, but did you know it can also improve your skin's elasticity? During sleep, our body produces collagen and repairs any damage that's been done to our skin throughout the day. However when we are sleep deprived, our bodies produce more cortisol, a stress hormone that can actually break down collagen! It’s best to aim for 7-9 hours of sleep a night to give your skin the rest it needs, and consider sleeping on your back to prevent sleep lines and wrinkles caused by constant facial pressure on the pillow. However if you are a dedicated side or tummy sleeper you could invest in a good pillowcase made of silk or satin to reduce friction and prevent those creases while you sleep! Avoid smoking and try to limit alcohol consumption Smoking harms your skin and makes it more susceptible to wrinkles and age spots. Fact. This is because it damages collagen and elastin fibres, leading to accelerated skin ageing and reduced elasticity! So, if you smoke, quitting is the best thing you can do for your skin's health. Excessive alcohol consumption can also dehydrate the skin and contribute to premature aging. We aren’t saying quit alcohol, like smoking, moderation is what’s key, so try to limit your alcohol intake and balance it with an increased water consumption.Just remember improving your skin’s elasticity requires consistency! By following these steps and sticking to them daily you’ll notice a positive change to your skin’s texture and firmness in next to no time (it won’t happen overnight though!)
eyelash tips for mature woman

Mascara hacks: eyelash tips for mature woman

by Jo Boyden on May 17 2023
Mascara! My go-to beauty product (in fact I wouldn’t leave the house without wearing it!) and one of the most popular beauty products out there! But why do we all love it so? Because mascara is a quick and easy way to make our lashes longer and our eyes to pop, while enhancing our overall look too! Plus it’s no secret that beautiful eyelashes can make you look and feel both prettier, and younger! But as we age, our eye lashes age too! So you might find that the mascara you’ve been loving for all those years suddenly isn’t preforming as it once was, and your lashes just aren’t as full and voluminous as before. Fear not, there are plenty of hacks and tricks you can use to make your lashes look fuller and longer. Here’s a few tips to get you started… Choose the right mascara formula As we age, our lashes tend to become thinner and more brittle, so it's important to choose a mascara formula that will nourish and protect your lashes. Look for mascaras that contain nourishing ingredients like vitamin E, panthenol, and biotin, and be sure to steer clear from non-hypoallergenic mascaras (ones that contain preservatives) as these can irritate your eyes, making you rub them more frequently which results in lash loss! (And the last thing we want to do is loose what precious lashes we have!)Try: ELES NEW Lush Mascara Be wary of using waterproof mascara daily If you are over looking at panda eyes in the mirror every afternoon you may have well turned to waterproof mascara (because less smudging and smearing of course), however waterproof mascara can be a nightmare to remove (cue extra rubbing of eyes when trying to remove – which can age the delicate eye area!) and the formulation itself can be harsher on your eyes causing lashes to dry out and be more prone to breakage.Instead, where possible use water-soluble long wear mascaras, and when you need to go waterproof (essential for beach and pool breaks) just be sure to check out the ingredients and remove with a good eye makeup remover. Layoff the false lashes If lashes are sparse, you might be loving the idea of your false ones. The thing is many false lashes come with cheap adhesives. Pulling them out leads to broken and damaged lashes. For women over 50, this means more lash problems. Eek. Curl your eye lashes but not with an eyelash curler We’ve been told to curl our lashes with an eyelash curler to create more volume and lift for our lashes, but this isn’t actually a good option as we get older as an eyelash curler can create more damage than good and cause already weakened lashes to break. Instead a popular way to curl your lashes is by using a metal teaspoon. Press the spoon, concave side in, against your eyelid above your lashes. Now use your fingertip to press your eyelashes against the convex curve of the bottom of the spoon. Hold your lashes in place for 10 to 15 seconds and repeat in the corners. You can even use something as simple as your finger to curl your lashes too! Simply close your eye and use your fingertip to gently push your upper eyelashes up against the top of your eyelid. Hold the eyelashes up for 30 seconds and then release them. Layer your mascara If you love your volumizing mascara but wish you could get a little more length to your lashes you could try layering. Start with a coat of lengthening mascara to define your lashes, then follow up with a coat of volumizing mascara to add fullness. Wiggle your mascara wand When applying mascara, wiggle the brush back and forth at the roots of the lashes to saturate the mascara at the base, then pull upward to the tips. This creates the appearance of thickness and volume and adds length without a clumpy mess. Don’t forget your lower lashes Many women focus all their attention on their upper lashes and leave the bottom lashes mascara free! The thing is applying mascara to your lower lashes can help create a more youthful wide-eyed, wide-awake look! Stop using expired mascara Like with anything, your mascara expires, and when it does, you need to throw it out and buy another! Even if you think it’s got a few more weeks or months in it. Not only can expired mascara be more difficult to apply to lashes without clumping or flaking, it can also compromise its ability to add length and volume to eyelashes, and can spark lash loss (and we don’t want to be loosing any more lashes than necessary do we!) This is because every time you use your mascara, you are pumping air into the wand, this creates bacteria! And bacteria in your mascara can lead to irritation and eye infections when applied...cue itchy eyes and rubbing! The average life of a mascara once used for the first time is 3 months, so if you are using your mascara everyday be sure to take note of when the 3-month mark is up! Don’t pump the wand when applying mascara It’s so easy to pump the wand when you are about to apply your mascara, hey I’ve been guilty of this many a time, after all many of us are under the impression that this will help coat the brush with the right amount of product, but by doing this you can let air into the tube which in turn will dry out the mascara prematurely. Instead twist the wand back and forth while pulling it out of the tube. This will help coat the brush evenly without wasting product and enable the mascara to last that little bit longer! Use a spoon (or card of some sort) to prevent smudging mascara If you are prone to getting mascara on your eyelids (and we’ve all been there) it’s easy to reach for a cotton tip to wipe it away, however the constant pulling of the skin using cotton tips on your delicate eyelid can actually damage already ageing eyes so it’s best to use a spoon or card of some sort (can try a business card) as a shield! Hold it up against your eyelid and then apply your mascara. This will help prevent smudges and keep your makeup looking clean.Whether you’re looking for fuller, longer lashes or just want to prevent smudges and clumps, these tips and tricks can help you achieve the look you want. So go ahead and give them a try – your lashes will thank you!
beauty products we love

9 beauty products we are loving this month

by Jo Boyden on May 17 2023
Even though I’m blessed to be able to try many skincare and makeup products working at BC, I do have my favourite beauty buys, the ones I literally can’t live without now, but for this blog I decided to turn to my colleagues to see what their latest skincare and makeup obsessions are too. Here you’ll find our reviews on the best beauty products that launched this year, as well as the products we’ve rediscovered and fallen back in love with. Phytomer Hydra Continue Radiance Energising Cream“There are a few moisturisers that I simply love and have been in my beauty bag for a long while now, but this cream is the one I can’t get enough of at the moment. It’s a very light moisturiser but seems to offer my dull, thirsty skin just the right amount of moisture it needs. I also love how it not only nourishes my skin but makes it feel calm and soothed too. What’s more, after every use, my skin not only looks and feels beautifully dewy and rejuvenated but it looks visibly radiant too! And bonus - it’s packed to the brim with vitamins and marine ingredients. Outstanding stuff!” Jo Boyden, Marketing, PR & Content ManagerELES Luminous Defence Brightening Day Protection 50+ “If you are concerned about ageing, there are two essentials you need in your skincare routine – SPF and retinol. In fact if you don’t use SPF, using anti-ageing skincare is a waste of time! This is because UV radiation causes skin damage, premature ageing and of course as we all know, increases the risk of skin cancer. But finding a sunscreen with a high SPF that we love and are happy to use every day can be tricky, because sunscreens can be greasy, the smell can be overbearing, or sometimes the last thing you want is to lather a thick paste on your face! But when we launched ELES Luminous Defence Brightening Day Protection I knew I’d found my go-to. I apply it every morning without fail, all year round. It's super light-weight and full of great ingredients that not only protect my skin but prevent hyper-pigmentation and dehydration too. It also gives me a bit of glow which is a bonus.” Liane Scior, Director of Education & MarketingMedicalia Retinol Concentrate“This is my other go to at the moment. I wear it under my moisturiser and apply before bed. It’s packed with a clinically proven blend of peptides, antioxidants and retinol that actively work while you sleep so you wake up to your glowiest skin yet. The more I use it, the more supple and smooth and youthful my skin feels. I have also noticed a dramatic reduction in my pigmentation and fine lines and wrinkles. This is actually one of those products that even skin professionals, and skin sceptics will tell you is worth the investment.I highly recommend using it in combination with Medicalia Retinol and ‘C’ Care Cream.” Liane Scior, Director of Education & MarketingELES Age Defying BB Cream 30“I love the convenience of this product and wear it whether working in the office, hanging out at home or heading out. Its my primer, sunscreen and foundation in one and because it’s so lightweight and silky soft on application you really don’t feel like you are wearing makeup! I also love how it’s packed with anti-ageing and skin nurturing ingredients so it’s doing good for my skin as opposed to just concealing it! If you are looking for multi-tasking makeup that’ll leave your skin looking flawless and glowy (with a subtle matte finish) this could be your new go-to.” May Scior, Operations AssistantPhytomer Rosee Soin Radiance Replenishing Oil“This oil is amazing and the perfect luxurious treat for your skin at the end of a long day. It is an extremely hydrating yet dry oil that absorbs into my skin quickly creating a beautifully velvety finish but without the greasy residue that so many night oils can leave. And thanks to it’s divine, soothing rose scent every night I use it, it transports me into a totally relaxed state and the next morning I wake to brighter, smoother and revitalised skin, no word of a lie.Honestly if you dealing with dehydrated, dull or sensitive skin even, I couldn’t recommend this product more highly!” Taryn Gray, Brand Co-ordinatorMicro Emulsion Massage Oil Anti Stress“This is my winter go-to and has been for many years. So now the temperature is dropping, it’s out of the cupboard and back in my daily routine once again. I use it as a nourishing body cream/oil especially if I take hot showers as this rehydrates and softens my skin, and when I find the time, I pour it into the bath as a nourishing milk bath, to relinquish pent up tension and fatigue. It was also the perfect product to use during pregnancy as it helped prevent any stretchmarks from forming! Even though it’s an oil, it’s doesn’t remain greasy and the scent is like you have just walked into a day spa. Bliss.” Kellie Deveney, International Educator and Business Development ManagerCleanRefresh Foaming Oil Cleanser“We all know it’s important to cleanse our skin every day, so I’ve tried rather a few cleansers in my time, but this one is THE best cleanser I have ever used.It has a gel-like texture but as soon as you add water it foams up beautifully on my face, which I love as it feels like it’s really purifying my skin and removing the day's grime and makeup. Plus it leaves my skin feeling really clean, super smooth and not dry at all (which many foaming cleansers can do). What’s more, since I’ve been using it my skin has been smoother and blemish free.” Elaine Palapag, Social Media Co-ordinator Pevonia Hyaluronic Acid Hydra Mist“I love, love, LOVE this mist! I was lucky enough to trial it before we launched it on BC and it’s quickly become a must-have in my everyday skincare routine. I’ve never been one for face mists, but this is next level. I use it first thing in the morning to revitalise my skin and replenish it with any moisture that’s been lost overnight, then again after I’ve applied my makeup as it’s an awesome setting spray, I then spritz it on my face throughout the day when my skin needs a pick-me-up, which I find is essential when I’m in the office with the heating pumping, and then again at night after I’ve applied my serum and moisturiser to finish off the perfect night routine. Not only does it make my skin feel super moist and dewy but it really does awaken my senses too.N.B Since it’s formulated with not only Hyaluronic Acid, but a blend of ultra-calming Chamomile, Aloe, Green Tea and aromatic essential oils too, it makes this powerhouse product ideal for all skin types, especially dehydrated, irritated, and ageing skin!” Taryn Gray, Brand Co-ordinatorPhytomer Night Recharge Youth-Enhancing Cream“I LOVE night creams, the silkier and richer the better I say and having tried many night creams in my time working in the industry, this is definitely one of the best night creams in for any skin care routine, hands down (big call I know!) Its texture is like silk, and it literally melts into skin as soon as you apply, cocooning it in nourishing hydration (so my skin gets all the benefits of this cream’s marine botanicals while I sleep!) The next morning my skin is literally glowing and smooth as a baby’s bottom! OBSESSED.” Jo Boyden, Marketing, PR & Content Manager And there you have it! Our top 8 beauty products that have captured our hearts and skin! and made it into our daily beauty routines this month. Whether you are looking to fight signs of ageing, achieve a radiant complexion, or simply pamper your skin, BC has something for everyone. Trust us, once you try these products, you’ll understand why we are so obsessed! Happy pampering.
sheet mask

Everything you need to know about sheet masks

by Jo Boyden on May 12 2023
If you’re not familiar with sheet masks or you simply haven’t had a chance to try one yet, you might be wondering what all the hype is about when it comes to this popular skincare trend. After all why not just stick to a traditional cream mask right? The thing is like all masks, sheet masks offer a multitude of benefits and are a great place to start if you are new to this vital step in your skincare routine. And no, sheet masks aren’t a new phenomenon, in fact they’ve been around for decades, but finally they are getting the wrap they deserve and for very good reason. From what they are to their many benefits, keep reading as we reveal everything you need to know about sheet masks. What are sheet masks? Different to your traditional cream masks, sheet masks are single-use face masks made out of a thin, often cotton or paper-like material designed to fit over your face. The sheet is cut to fit the shape of your face (with holes for the eyes, nose and mouth) and is soaked in a serum or essence. These serums are typically packed with all kinds of beneficial ingredients, like hyaluronic acid, vitamin C, and antioxidants, that are designed to penetrate deeply into the skin and provide a variety of benefits. Why are sheet masks good? Sheet masks are seriously good for your skin for a number of reasons, in fact they provide the perfect balance of skincare and pamper! They are a great way to provide your skin with a big boost of hydration, nourishment and other skincare benefits. One of the great things about sheets masks is that they come in a number of formulations too – such as brightening and anti-ageing - so you can choose one that's tailored to your specific skin concerns. The sheet itself also helps to lock in the moisture and active ingredients, allowing for better absorption and therefore effectiveness.Another great thing about sheet masks is that they provide a relaxing and pampering experience, a weekly self-care ritual, which let’s face it we could all do with! This is because they literally force you to take some ‘me time’, a break from your daily routine to sit back and zone out for 15-20 minutes while the sheet does its thing to your skin! It’s like having a mini spa session in the comfort of your own home, who wouldn’t love that! And the end result? You feel better and your skin certainly looks it too! Finally sheet masks are relatively affordable and incredibly easy and convenient to use (just open sachet, unfold the mask, apply it to your face and wait for it to work its magic!) They are also great for travel or on-the-go use as they’re lightweight (they come in single sachets) and take up very little space. Are sheet masks right for your skin? Sheet masks can be beneficial for all skin types but like with any skincare product its important to choose the right one for your specific skin concerns. If you have reactive or sensitive skin just be cautious and be mindful of the ingredients and avoid sheet masks that contain fragrances or essential oils which can be irritating to some sensitive skin. Here are our top picks; Sensitive skin If your skin is on the sensitive side look for sheet masks enriched with soothing and cooling ingredients such as aloe, green tea, lavender, and tea tree to help nourish and calm your skin while reducing any inflammation. We LOVE the ELES Calming and Soothing Sheet MaskAgeing skin If you have mature skin, opt for sheet masks that contain ingredients such as, collagen, peptides or retinol, which can help to improve skin texture and the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Try the ELES Youth Recovery Sheet Mask Not only will it improve skin’s texture and help with tackling any premature lines and wrinkles, it also helps to brighten and even skin tone.Dry, dull, discoloured skin And if you’re dealing with dryness, dehydration, discolouration and dullness and could do with an instant pick-me-up, as well as boost of hydration, a sheet mask that contains nourishing and brightening ingredients like hyaluronic acid, vitamin c or niacinamide is the way to go! We highly recommend the ELES Hydrating and Brightening Sheet Mask, it’s fantastic! It plumps the skin from within, radically reducing moisture loss, plus extra bonus it helps to prevent hyperpigmentation and give your skin a fabulous, healthy glow. Oily and blemished prone skin If you are prone to oily skin and breakouts a purifying sheet mask should be your go-to because it helps absorb excess oil, unclog pores, and remove impurities. We can’t get enough of the Purifying Sheet Mask from ELES, infused with clarifying ingredients like charcoal and nourishing, calming and anti-ageing ingredients including hyaluronic acid, centella asiatica, camellia sinensis leaf extract and aloe, it reduces shine, hydrates skin, soothes inflammation, and prevents future breakouts, leaving skin feeling refreshed, balanced, and deeply cleansed. How do you apply sheet masks? Sheet masks are designed to fit over your face. Using one is pretty simple. Here are the steps; Start with clean, dry skin (best to wash your face with a gentle cleanser and pat it dry before applying). Take the sheet mask out of its packaging and unfold it. Smooth it onto your face, making sure it’s lined up with your eyes, nose and mouth. Press the sheet mask onto your skin to make sure it’s adhering properly (you want all the ingredients to properly absorb into your skin). Relax for 15-20 minutes and let the mask work its magic. Enjoy the “me” time! Remove the sheet mask. Finally gently massage any remaining serum into the skin (this is often the case as sheet masks are literally drenched in product). That’s it! Now reap in the benefits. Happy masking!
enlarged pores

12 ways to shrink your enlarged pores

by Jo Boyden on May 12 2023
Struggling with large pores? Hate the way they can make your skin look dull and lead to blackheads and acne too!? You’re not alone! In fact many of us struggle with this daily skin concern, especially those of us with oily or combination skin. The great news is, there are a number of ways you can shrink the appearance of pore size as well as improve the overall appearance of your skin! Keep reading as we reveal 10 tips for minimizing the size of those pesky pores of yours, and enjoy smoother, clearer skin.Firstly though, why do you have enlarged pores? There are actually a number of causes when it comes to enlarged pores. These include; Genetics Some of us are more prone to having larger pores due to our genetics believe it or not (thanks parents!) Oily skin Excess oil production can lead to clogged pores, making pores appear larger. Age As we get older, our skin loses elasticity, which can cause pores to appear larger. Sun damage Exposure to the sun can cause skin damage, including enlarged pores. Poor skincare habits Not properly cleansing and exfoliating your skin can lead to buildup in your pores, causing them to enlarge. Hormonal changes Fluctuations in hormones, can cause the skin to produce more oil, leading to larger pores. How do you shrink enlarged pores? Keep your skin clean Keeping your skin cleansed is crucial to preventing clogged pores. When pores are clogged, they may appear larger or darker in colour, and swelling or inflammation may start to develop – eek! Be sure to use a gentle cleanser depending on your skin type. For example if your skin is oily, it’s best to opt for foaming cleansers, if your skin tends to be on the sensitive side, there are some amazing sensitive skin cream cleansers for that too! Use your cleanser twice daily to remove any excess oil, dirt and debris from your face.Remember harsh cleansers can strip your skin of its natural oils, causing your pores to become larger! Make sure you have exfoliating products in your skincare routine Exfoliators are imperative! Their main purpose is after all to help remove dead skin cells and unclog pores. Look for products that contain alpha-hydroxy acids (AHA’s) or beta-hydroxy acids (BHA’s) like salicylic acid, glycolic acid and lactic acid, and use one to two times a week to keep skin smooth and clear. We highly recommend Pevonia’s new ProCorrective Clear-Control Exfoliator. The name speaks for itself! It’s a superb dual-action cleanser and gentle exfoliant which literally clears skin by delivering a deep clearing of the pores, removing dead cells and surface impurities. Apply a clay mask weekly We all love a mask, a step in your skincare routine which shouldn’t be missed for a number of reasons, but when it comes to shrinking the appearance of pores, clay masks are a must! They can effectively help absorb excess oil and tighten pores by penetrating the epidermis removing stubborn dirt and grime that’s got stuck deep within your pores.Apply a clay mask once a week to help shrink your pores. We love Phytomer Radiance Reviving Mask with Clay. It combines 100% red and white clay with marine sugars and algae to instantly unclog pores as well as counteract dehydration, fatigue, dark spots and dull skin! Want visibly smaller, tighter pores, and radiant skin? This is a must! Use a toner Yes, we all cleanse our skin daily, we know that’s a rule of thumb, but how many of us actually tone our skin, after all what’s the point right? Well I’m here to tell you a toner can be a game changer, especially if you have enlarged pores or oily skin! A good toner can help remove any remaining dirt on your skin that your cleanser has missed and will also help tighten those pores of yours daily. We recommend Phytomer Oligomarine Flawless Skin Tonic. Introduce collagen into your skincare Collagen, the elixir of youth! Or otherwise professionally known as the protein our bodies produce to keep skin young and plump! The thing is as we age, our bodies ability to produce collagen starts to diminish, this in turn makes our pores become looser and larger looking! Eek. By introducing collagen into your skincare routine you can replace loss collagen, which will in turn smooth and tighten the skin making pores appear smaller. And by introducing collagen skincare from an early age (we are talking 20’s – 30’s) you can actually help prevent larger-looking pores caused by the loss of collagen from forming!Want to know why else you should introduce collagen into your skincare routine? Click here. Give retinol a go Retinol, the wonder ingredient that really does it all! From reducing the appearance of large pores by increasing cell turnover and promoting collagen production, to combatting premature fine lines and wrinkles, it’s really something we should all look to introducing into our daily skincare ritual, especially if we are over 40! Just be sure to introduce your retinol cream slowly though. Use at night, once or twice a week and gradually increase to nightly. Remember it’s best not to use retinol cream in the morning because retinol makes your skin more sensitive to UV rays, plus sunlight decreases the efficacy of the product. Also remember while you are using a retinol cream to be diligent about applying your sunscreen in the day (well you should be wearing it daily anyway!)To learn more about the many benefits of retinol click here. Wear sunscreen Sun damage doesn’t only mean fine lines and wrinkles, dark spots and loss of elasticity, sun damage can also make pores appear larger. Protect your skin from the sun by using a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 and above, and use it daily!! Use a pore-minimizing primer It can help you fill in your pores and create a smoother surface for your makeup.Try ELES Cosmetics Pore Perfecting Face Primer. It’s a game changer for those with large pores! It’s oil-free, perfectly lightweight and seems to combat shine almost instantly. It contains a natural Dermat Complex which enables it to absorb oil and effectively reduce pore size in one hit Genius. Avoid heavy makeup Yes, we all want to try and hide those pores, and while makeup might seem the only way, heavy foundations can actually clog your pores making them appear larger! Eek. When it comes to makeup opt for lighter, non-comedogenic products instead, and products ideal for combination to oily skin so it doesn’t slide off your face by mid-morning, revealing those enlarged pores we all love to hate! We can’t recommend mineral makeup enough. Packed with skin nurturing ingredients, mineral foundations enable skin to breath freely while concealing blemishes and large pores. Stay hydrated Drinking plenty of water believe it or not can reduce the appearance of pores! This is because hydrated skin equals plumped skin. Eat a healthy diet A diet high in fruits and vegetables and low in processed foods can help keep your skin healthy and reduce inflammation, which can contribute to enlarged pores. use a pore perfecting moisturiser When it comes to large pores, the key is to choose a pore-minimizing moisturiser as they work by stimulating and plumping the collagen that surrounds pores.Yes it’s a thing! If you aren’t already using one, you simply must now. Formulated to quite literally refine pores for a smoother, flawless complexion free of shine you won’t believe the results. Our go-to is Pevonia’s Age Correction Micro-Pores Refine Cream. It’s a mattifying treatment cream which radically reduces oil production and pore size, while providing long-lasting hydration at the same time. Just remember, keeping enlarged pores at bay requires a consistent skincare routine and healthy daily habits. By following these tips, you can (and will!) shrink those pores and improve the overall appearance of your skin in the process too!
collagen skincare routine

This is why you should use collagen in your skincare routine

by Jo Boyden on May 05 2023
Collagen - we know it’s an essential skincare ingredient and we’ve been told we should incorporate it into our daily skincare routine, but why? Especially when our bodies naturally produce this power protein! In fact 60% of our skin is essentially collagen! The thing is when we’re young, our skin has plentiful amounts of collagen! However as we age our body’s ability to produce it decreases which is not great news as collagen plays a critical role in maintaining healthy skin, hair, nails and joints! It’s an elixir of youth so to speak! But when it starts to diminish, so does our skin and body’s youthfulness too! Cue wrinkles and sagging skin – eek.So, instead of watching your skin head south, it’s important to replenish the collagen we’ve lost, with collagen skincare! Keep reading as we count down the many benefits of adding collagen infused skincare into your everyday beauty routine. Helps to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles Collagen infused skincare products can help to stimulate the production of collagen in the skin which can help reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Improves skin hydration One of our skin’s main functions is to serve as a barrier between our bodies and the environment. Collagen has the ability to attract and retain moisture in the skin, which can help to improve skin hydration and keep it looking nourished, plump and youthful. Enhances skin elasticity Collagen-infused skincare products can help to improve skin elasticity, by increasing skin’s durability, making it more resilient to damage and less prone to sagging and stretching. Think stronger and firmer skin! Brightens the complexion Collagen can help to promote the growth of new skin cells, leading to a brighter and more even complexion. Reduces hyperpigmentation Collagen can help to reduce the appearance of hyperpigmentation and age spots, leaving the skin looking more even-toned and radiant. Protects against environmental damage Collagen-infused skincare products can help to protect the skin against environmental damage caused by factors such as UV rays and pollution, which can contribute to premature aging. Improves skin texture Just like wrinkles, rough skin can be attributed to damage to the underlying collagen. Collagen peptides can help our body repair and rebuild damaged collagen, leading to a smooth collagen structure that improves the texture of our skin. Fights acne scars What’s worse than dealing with acne, is having scars that are left behind. Acne scars are actually caused by collagen damage in your skin! Supplementing with collagen skincare can speed up collagen formation in the skin, therefore accelerating tissue repair that will heal your acne scars. Now we know the benefits, what are the best collagen products to use?Whole collagen is difficult for the body to digest or absorb, however collagen peptides are significantly more accessible for the body. Collagen peptides, specifically, are made by breaking down collagen into very small pieces. Research has shown that our bodies can absorb collagen peptides of a particularly small size without breaking them down further, and directly use these peptides to build new collagen. Pretty clever hey?Pevonia offer a range of collagen infused skincare formulated with collagen peptides. Including the Power Repair Age Correction Hydrating Cleanser, Hydrating Toner, Collagen and Myoxy Caviar Concentrate and Collagen Cream, each product in the collection works together to replenish the skin with lost of collagen, which effectively combating signs of ageing! The Pevonia Age Correction Marine Collagen Cream is in fact Pevonia’s global best-selling cream and for very good reason.
