Damaged skin barrier? How to repair and take care of it

by Jo Boyden on Apr 28 2023
If you’re suddenly suffering from dry, irritated and sensitive skin it’s possible your skin barrier could be compromised. Fear not though, a damaged skin barrier can happen to the best of us, even devout skincare enthusiasts! Thankfully it’s possible to fix a damaged skin barrier – as long as you know how! Keep reading as we talk all things skin barrier, from what it is, to how to fix it and the best tips and products to use. Firstly though when exactly is your skin barrier? Our skin barrier is the outermost layer of our skin. You could call it your ‘shield’ as it literally serves as a protective barrier against the outside world! Be it environmental toxins, bacteria, and other harmful substances.Technically knows as the stratum corneum, it’s a complex system of lipids, proteins and cells which not only protects your face from external aggressors but helps retain moisture in your skin keeping it hydrated and healthy too. What causes a damaged skin barrier?Unfortunately our skin barrier can be very fragile and several factors can compromise or damage it, these include; Harsh soaps and skincare products. Using products that contain harsh chemicals can strip the skin of its natural oils and disrupt the skin barrier. Hot water Yes, something as simple as washing your face with water that is too hot can strip the skin of its natural oils leading to dryness and skin sensitivities. Sun exposure Prolonged exposure to the sun’s harmful UV rays can seriously damage the skin barrier and lead to premature ageing. Environmental pollutants Everything from air pollution and cigarette smoke to the weather and blue light from our screens can cause havoc with our skin. Genetics Some people are just more prone to skin barrier damage due to their genetics unfortunately, this doesn’t mean you are doomed, it just means you need to be more religious about looking after your skin and using specific skincare products to protect your skin barrier. Age Our ceramide levels decrease significantly as we age so our skin’s ability to hold onto moisture eventually becomes compromised too. What is the best way to repair your skin’s barrier? If your skin barrier is damaged there are several things you can do to repair it including; Use gentle cleansers Choose skincare products that are gentle and free from harsh chemicals. Look for products specifically formulated for sensitive skin. Avoid hot water Always use lukewarm water instead of hot water when washing your face. Make sure you moisturise morning and night Use a moisturiser that is specifically formulated to repair the skin barrier. Look for products rich in ceramides (an essentially fatty molecule called a lipid which holds your skin cells together, without ceramides there is nothing to keep all those hydrating ingredients from evaporating from the skin!). We love Pevonia’s best selling Age Correction Marine Collagen Cream. It rejuvenates skin cells while softening fine lines and wrinkles and replenishing vital nutrients. Avoid harsh skincare products Steer clear from products that contain alcohol, fragrances, and other harsh chemicals. Products your skin from the sun, every single day! Using a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 will not only help repair your skin but protect it too and not just from damage to your skin’s barrier but premature ageing as well. Avoid smoking Smoking can and will damage your skin’s barrier and lead to premature ageing. Use skincare products that help combat environmental damage on our skin If you live in the city, try using products that have been carefully formulated to combat environmental damage. We love Phytomer’s CityLife Collection. Eat a healthy diet A diet rich in antioxidants and healthy fats can help support the skin barrier and keep it healthy! Stay hydrated Having a damaged barrier often results in a dehydrated complexion from the skin’s deeper layers so it’s vital to replenish that lost moisture with lightweight serums formulated with hydration heroes like hyaluronic acid. Serums have the ability to penetrate deep into the skin layers, whereas moisturisers tend to hydrate the skin’s surface. We highly recommend Pevonia’s Hyaluronic Acid Hydra Serum and Hyaluronic Acid Hydra Mist for that extra boost of moisture.Drinking plenty of water daily (8 glasses is the recommended amount) is essential too! It will not only help repair damaged skin but help maintain a healthy and hydrated skin barrier once repaired too!
Glycolic Acid

Glycolic Acid: The key to smoother, more radiant skin

by Jo Boyden on Apr 17 2023
We all know there are many go-to ingredients we need to look for when it comes to our skincare. From Retinol for the best in anti-ageing to hyaluronic acid for supercharged hydration, but if your skin is looking a little dull and devitalised and you’re forever coveting that ‘instaglow’, glycolic acid is the ingredient you need to be looking out for.But what is glycolic acid exactly?Don’t let the word ‘acid’ scare you. Glycolic acid is a water soluble AHA (otherwise known as alpha-hydroxy acid) derived from sugar cane! It’s a type of natural exfoliant which dissolves the ‘glue’ that holds dead skin cells together, enabling them to be easily sloughed away revealing fresh, healthy skin underneath. And because of its small molecule size (glycolic acid actually has the smallest molecular size among all AHAs) it is able to penetrate into the deeper layers of the skin where it can help treat everything from fine lines to uneven texture, blemishes, and of course dullness! So now we know what glycolic acid is, what exactly are the benefits of this popular skincare ingredient? Exfoliation Glycolic acid is a powerful exfoliant that helps to remove dead skin cells, unclog pores, and promote cell turnover. This leads to smoother, brighter skin and can also help to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Hyperpigmentation Glycolic acid can help to reduce the appearance of hyperpigmentation, such as age spots, sun damage, and melasma. It works by inhibiting the production of melanin, which is responsible for skin pigmentation. Acne Glycolic acid can be beneficial for those with acne-prone skin as it helps to unclog pores and reduce the production of sebum. It also has anti-inflammatory properties that can help to reduce redness and inflammation associated with acne. Anti-ageing Glycolic acid can help to stimulate collagen production, which is essential for maintaining skin elasticity and firmness. This can help to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, giving the skin a more youthful appearance. What is the best way to use glycolic acid?Glycolic acid is a potent ingredient and should be used with caution. It is important to start with a low concentration and gradually increase the strength over time. Also, because glycolic acid works by exfoliating the top layer of the skin it can increase UV sensitivity from the sun so it’s essential to use sunscreen when using glycolic acid. There are several ways to incorporate glycolic acid into your skincare routine. It can be found in cleansers, toners, serums, and moisturizers. It is recommended to use glycolic acid once or twice a week initially, and then gradually increase the frequency as your skin becomes more accustomed to it. With regular use, this hero ingredient will help you achieve smoother, more radiant skin. Glycolic acid products we and our customers highly recommend;Pevonia Renewing Glycocides CreamCombining glycolic acid with hydration hero hyaluronic acid, this treatment cream works to dissolve dead skin cells, improving skin texture and diminishing fine lines too! Skin resurfaces soother, brighter and younger…seriously.“WOW, talk about overnight results! Minimizes my pores, smooths out my skin, and reduces redness. I’m not sure if it’s supposed to do all those things, but it’s been 2 months now since I’ve been using it every night and i LOVE this cream!” Sally OPhytomer Emergence Even Skin Tone Refining SerumThis lightweight, refining face serum formulated with a powerful AHA formulation, visibly reduces the appearances of imperfections. It diminishes the appearance of uneven pigmentation, acne, enlarged pores and dark spots!“On my third bottle now and loved how it made a few of my dark spots disappear. It does take a while to see the results but it’s definitely worth the price!” Vickie KPevonia Problematic Skincare CreamFormulated with glycolic acid, calendula and panthenol, this beautifully light-textured and oil free cream with UV protection is excellent for preventing pore clogging and blackheads. It renders skin soothed, hydrated and desensitized.“Great cream for problem skin! I LOVE this product. I have tried everything, and this has been the one that I will stick with. It is not too heavy and absorbs nicely.” Olive G

Oily skin do’s and don’ts: Busting the Myths

by Jo Boyden on Apr 11 2023
If you’re fed up with your face feeling greasy every single day, you’re constantly looking for ways to prevent your makeup sliding off your skin by mid-morning, or you’re simply over staring in the mirror and seeing a super shiny complexion staring back (and not because you’ve been adopting the ‘hyper glowing skin’ trend of late), it’s time to get serious about your oily skin condition. When it comes to oily skin there are a number of dos and don’ts. Things you may be doing but shouldn’t! Or things you aren’t doing but should! Keep reading as we bust a number of oily skin myths and provide our top tips on how to manage your oily skin too!Firstly though, it’s good to understand oily skin and why you have it! Despite oily skin being a nuisance, believe it or not, it’s actually not all doom and gloom! Oily skin happens when the sebaceous glands in your skin make too much sebum. Sebum is the waxy, oily substance that protects and hydrates the skin (it’s actually a blessing as it’s vital for keeping the skin super healthy and youthful looking) however, too much sebum can lead to oily skin! This in turn results in your greasy, shiny complexion and can also result in clogged pores, and unwanted acne if not treated! Fear not thought, that’s why we are here to help! Myth #1Oily skin doesn’t need moisturiser, it’ll just make it oilier – WRONGOne of the biggest misconceptions about oily skin is that it doesn’t need moisturiser. Contrary to popular belief moisturising does not make oily skin worse. Oily skin, in fact, needs moisturiser just as much as any other skin type. Moisturising actually helps to regulate oil production and often people who struggle with oily skin can actually have dehydrated skin (skin doesn’t contain enough water) therefore their skin tries to compensate by producing too much oil! And there we have ourselves a vicious cycle. The key is to find a lightweight moisturiser specifically targeted to oily skin types that won’t clog pores or leave a greasy residue.Myth #2Washing your face multiple times a day will help control oil production – WRONGWashing your face too frequently can actually have the opposite effect on oily skin! Over-washing can strip the skin of its natural oils, leading to increased oil production to compensate. Instead wash your face twice daily (morning and night) with a gentle, oil-free foaming cleanser to remove excess oil and grime. Myth #3Oily skin doesn’t need sunscreen – WRONGWe know many sunscreens can feel greasy on the skin so clearly that’s the last thing you want to apply to your already oily face right? But I’m here to preach to you the importance of sunscreen for all skin types and that it’s, unfortunately, necessary to wear every. single. day come rain or shine. Just make sure if your skin is oily to look for lighter oil free sunscreens that won’t feel heavy on your skin.Myth #4Using harsh products such as exfoliators daily will help control your oil production – WRONGUsing harsh products on oily skin can actually exacerbate the problem! Over exfoliating or just using harsh ingredients can strip the skin of its natural oils leading to increased oil production and potentially irritation too. Instead, opt for more gentle non-comedogenic products designed to help control an oily skin complexion. Now that we’ve busted some of the most common oily skin myths, let’s talk about some of the do’s and don’ts for managing it. DoWash your face with a gentle cleanser twice a day as mentioned earlier to remove any excess oil, grime and other impurities from your skin’s surface.Try Pevonia’s Phyto Gel Cleanser. This gorgeous non-drying product provides a delightful natural soft lather for deep cleansing. Saponaria, Rosemary, Lemon, and Pine, precisely blend to rid your skin of impurities and surface toxins and oils.Don’tWash your face more frequently than twice daily or use hot water as both can strip your skin of its natural oils and cause skin to produce even more oil to compensate.Do Use a lotion or toner after cleansing your skin as this will help remove any remaining oil as well as tighten pores.Try Phytomer Oligomarine Flawless Skin Tonic. Actually ideal for combination to oily skin types, this toner completes makeup removal and cleansing for really clear and clean skin. From the 1st application, the skin feels fresh, looks clear and is evenly toned. Day after day, excess oil dramatically reduces and pores are tightened. Oh, and your complexion will be more radiant too!Don’tUse heavy, oil-based moisturisers. While oily skin does still need moisturising just like any other skin type, rich moisturisers can clog pores and lead to breakouts.Do Moisturise your skin though! Simply use an oil-free lightweight moisturiser to keep your skin hydrated.Do Exfoliate regularly to remove dead skin cells and unclog pores which can help control oil production. Don’t Over-exfoliate! Once or twice weekly is sufficient. Over exfoliating skin can be detrimental and actually have some of the same signs as oily skin! From a shiny complexion to skin suddenly prone to breakouts. To find out whether your skin could be over-exfoliated click here.Don’t Use products with alcohol. Alcohol-based products can be very irritating and drying for oily skin. Your sebaceous glands will get the message that your skin is too dry and will work overtime to produce more sebum which equals even oilier skin!DoUse face masks that contain salicylic acid, beta-hydroxy acid, clays and ingredients with antibacterial properties. Our Pevonia Age Correction Micro-Pores Bio-Active Mask can be used once or twice a week as it pulls debris, blackheads and pore-cloggers from the skin. It's uniquely formulated to remove excess oil, control sebum production and help reveal an even-toned matte complexion.Don’tSkip sunscreen. ever. It’s important to protect your skin from the sun no matter what your skin type.DoUse oil-free or non comedogenic makeup to avoid clogging pores. Mineral makeup it best. Beauty Collective - healthy glowing skin

These are the dos and don’ts for achieving healthy, glowing skin

by Jo Boyden on Mar 23 2023
We all strive for flawless perfect skin, that beautifully youthful and healthy complexion free of blemishes, dark spots and other signs of ageing, but achieving truly healthy skin requires us to pay consistent care and attention to our skin’s needs, and we aren’t just about our morning skincare routine. There are in fact a multitude of steps we should be taking to help our skin daily. Here are the dos and don’ts to keeping skin looking and feeling great day in and day out. DO cleanse skin every day Cleansing skin is a MUST. In fact, cleansing is the most important step in your skincare routine. Cleansing helps to remove excess oil, dirt and dead skin sitting on your skin’s surface which can contribute to the development of skin problems like spots if left! Daily cleansing also helps to balance your skin’s pH levels which can prevent dryness and irritation. Cleansing will also help enhance product absorption! This means those products such as your moisturiser and serum will be able to penetrate your skin much more effectively and provide maximum benefits! To learn more about the importance of cleansing and how a great cleanser will improve your skin tenfold click here. DO hydrate your skin morning and night Everything we do always takes hydration out of our skin. Wearing makeup, applying cleansers, sweating, drinking alcohol, and the sun! all take moisture out of our skin so it’s super important to not only drink water but to use hydrating products daily too! Make sure you invest in quality hydrating moisturisers, serums and cleansers that will replenish skin with moisture and not dry it out more! And for extra efficiency and penetration of active ingredients remember to moisturise while your skin is still damp after your shower. DO apply sunscreen every. single. day. All year round. It’s easy to think why bother with sunscreen on days when it's a little overcast or raining even, but as I’ve preached many a time before, sunscreen isn’t just a summertime skincare product when it’s hot and the sky is blue, the sun is always there and has the ability to penetrate through those clouds no matter how thick they are! It’s important to remember that wearing sunscreen is THE best protection against skin ageing. Oh, and if you are staying indoors, and happen to work next to a window like me, the sun has the ability to penetrate through the glass to your skin too!And then there is the issue of blue light damage. To read all about it click here. But in short, just like the sun, your devices omit harmful ‘blue light’ rays, so it’s important to wear sunscreen to protect skin against them too! DO exercise regularly Exercising regularly is not only important for your body and overall health and wellbeing, it can also improve the health of your skin. Exercise improves blood circulation and oxygenation to the skin, which in turn helps nourish skin cells and keep them vital. In addition to providing oxygen, blood flow also helps carry away waste products, including free radicals, from working skin cells. So in short regular exercise will keep your skin more supple and youthful in appearance it also imparts a healthy glow! DO eat a healthy, balanced diet with plenty of fruits, vegetables and whole grains Fruits and veggies contain powerful antioxidants which help protect our skin from free radical damage (triggered by smoke, pollution etc). When free radicals overpower our skin they trigger oxidative stress which can impact our skin presenting in the form of fine lines, wrinkles, dull, uneven skin tone, dark spots and skin sagging – eek! So make sure you eat that rainbow of fruits and veggies each day and keep premature skin ageing away! DO try to get 8 hours of sleep a night We don’t call it ‘beauty sleep’ for nothing! When we sleep our skin repairs itself, producing collagen and the more collagen produced means skin is plumper and less likely to wrinkle! If we’re sleep-deprived, not only will we wake with dark under-eye circles and bags, but we are also more likely to experience skin irritation, dehydration, fine lines, and dare I say blemishes! Us adults need a minimum of 7 hours of restful slumber a night, 8 preferred! Just be sure you switch off any electronics an hour or so before a practice some relaxation techniques! DO drink at least 6-8 glasses of water a day Water is essential for healthy skin. It flushes out toxins and helps maintain your skin’s elasticity (which keeps it looking younger!) Those who drink more water are less likely to suffer from premature ageing as those who drink little amounts of water daily!Drinking ample amounts of water also helps balance your skin’s oil and water content which in turn helps to prevent excess oil and sebum secretion (meaning fewer clogged pores and less chances of getting spots!)It’s important to remember though that our skin is the last of our organs to receive water and nutrients so plenty of it daily is a must! DO exfoliate your skin at least once a week even if it’s on the sensitive side Weekly exfoliation is a must to remove dead skin cells and promote cell turnover. If the dead skin cells aren’t removed they can get trapped leading to clogged pores and unwanted spots. You might be afraid to exfoliate if your skin is on the sensitive side but that’s ok there are amazing sensitive skin exfoliators out there for you! You just need to steer clear of physical exfoliants and opt for gentle enzyme exfoliators that don’t contain granules. These earth-sourced ingredients essentially dissolve dead skin cells as opposed to physically scrubbing them off.For more on what to do when it comes to exfoliating sensitive skin click here. But DON’T over exfoliate your skin Over-exfoliating skin can strip it of natural oils and lead to dryness and irritation. To learn more about the impact of over-exfoliated skin click here. DON’T overload your skin with products From cleansers to exfoliators, serums, moisturisers, masks, oils and more, it is easy to get carried away with skincare and believe that buying and applying all the products will be best for your skin! The problem is overloading it, particularly when you are using too many actives in your products can actually be detrimental and result in dryness, irritation and redness! Instead, listen to your skin! The best approach is to understand your own individual needs rather than just adding layers of products because you are under the misconception that using them all will deliver optimum skin results!Remember if you are prone to sensitive skin simplicity is key, if you have an oily complexion cleansing, toning and a light mattifying moisturiser can be enough, and if your skin tends to be on the dry side, then a serum, moisturiser, mist and face oil to lock moisture in will be beneficial. Also, if you are adding in new steps to your skincare routine, do so one product at a time so that your skin has time to adjust. DON’T overdo your makeup Who doesn’t love wearing a bit of makeup, it can totally transform the way we look and feel after all, but overdoing it is a no no. Not because it might look OTT but because of the effect it can have on your skin. Depending on your skin type, excessive makeup can clog your pores leading to breakouts. Plus the chemicals in some makeup products can dry out your skin leaving it looking dull, dehydrated and depleted. A solution is to use healthy makeup formulations packed with skin loving ingredients like mineral makeup. DON’T use hot water when washing your face or taking a shower Hot water can strip your skin of its natural oils and in turn cause excessive dryness. Instead, use lukewarm water. DON’T leave your makeup on when going to bed I’m sure we’ve ALL been guilty of going to bed with our makeup on once or even many a time! Especially when we are exhausted after the daily juggle, or perhaps have had one too many and ooh how that bed looks so inviting but removing the day's makeup and grime off your face is a must! In fact not cleansing before bed means your skin is unable to regenerate effectively while you sleep, so pores clog, blemishes become more apparent, and fatigue (ageing!) signs start to appear. DON’T drink too much alcohol Many of us might love a margarita with friends or that big glass of red of an evening but sadly excessive alcohol consumption can dehydrate your skin and contribute to wrinkles and other skin issues, so try and limit your weekly alcohol consumption. DON’T smoke Smoking can accelerate the ageing process! It can damage collagen and elastin in your skin which leads to the formation of wrinkles and other signs of ageing. DON’T stress too much Stress can lead to skin problems like acne and eczema so managing stress levels through relaxation techniques like meditation, yoga and deep breathing can be essential for skin health.

We are taught from an early age to look after our skin - to cleanse every evening and apply moisturiser to keep skin supple and nourished day and night. But more often than not, our eyes get forgotten. The irony is the skin around our eyes is the most delicate on our face and the first to show signs of ageing. Eye ageing starts in the form of fatigue, we’re talking dark, sullen skin or under eye puffy circles, then the fine lines and wrinkles start to form, all of which could be dramatically reduced if we were to look after our eyes from any early age. Prevention is key as they say! But also, it’s never too late to show those peepers of yours some TLC and the best way to do this is to use a nourishing eye cream rich in hydrating and anti-ageing ingredient hyaluronic acid! Keep reading to learn why using a hyaluronic acid eye cream or serum in your daily skin care routine is a must! Using a hyaluronic acid eye cream will make a noticeable impact on your eyes delicate skin’s moisture levels Hyaluronic acid is a powerful humectant, meaning it attracts and retains moisture in the skin, this is essential for keeping the skin around the eyes hydrated and supple. Using an eye cream formulated with hyaluronic acid will reduce fine lines and wrinkles As we age the skin around our eyes becomes dryer, thinner and loses its elasticity which leads to fine lines and wrinkles! And unfortunately the dryer this delicate area, the more visible those unwanted wrinkles are! Hyaluronic acid eye creams not only help prevent this from happening, but they also help to plump up the skin reducing the appearance of the already existing fine lines and wrinkles. Applying hyaluronic acid under your eyes can help soothe and calm irritated skin The delicate area surrounding your eyes can be easily irritated and in turn become inflamed. Hyaluronic acid has anti-inflammatory properties that can help soothe and calm the skin, reducing puffiness and redness around the eyes. Hyaluronic acid eye creams can brighten and even skin tone Dark circles and uneven skin tone around the eyes can be caused by dehydration and sun damage. This is turn can make eyes look dull and tired. Hyaluronic acid eye creams especially when they are formulated with vitamin C, can effectively help to brighten and even out the skin tone by hydrating the skin and promoting cell turnover. Hyaluronic acid is a powerful antioxidant which can protect your peepers In addition to its hydrating and anti-inflammatory properties, hyaluronic acid is also a powerful antioxidant which can help to protect the skin from damage caused by environmental stressors such as UV rays and pollution. Using a cream rich in hyaluronic acid can help prevent premature eye ageing As I mentioned earlier prevention is key when it comes to premature ageing. By being proactive and using a hyaluronic acid eye cream will improve skins elasticity no end and prevent premature wrinkles from even forming!Overall, using a hyaluronic acid eye cream or serum can help to keep the delicate skin under your eyes hydrated, plump and youthful looking. However, when using hyaluronic acid under the eyes, it’s important to choose a product that is specifically formulated for this area of the face as some products may be too heavy. Look for lightweight serums or eye creams that contain hyaluronic acid and apply them gently using your fingertip. Some of our favourite, and our bestselling eye creams formulated with hyaluronic acid include; Vie Collection Chrono Eyes Puffiness – Dark Circles Wrinkle CreamThis outstanding eye cream draws its inspiration from the eye rejuvenating hyaluronic acid injections carried out in aesthetic doctors practices! Makeup brushes THE GUIDE: How to choose the right ones

by Jo Boyden on Mar 09 2023
We all love to invest in our favourite makeup products, from the best BB Creams and bronzers to our formidable foundations and mascaras, but what about the tools of the trade? Makeup brushes are an essential for any makeup routine. After all how are you supposed to apply your mineral powder foundation, or that much loved bronzer? Let alone your eyeshadow and blush. That’s right, from foundation to concealer, eyeshadow, cheeks and lips, there is a makeup brush for literally every makeup category, but how are you supposed to know which makeup brushes to use to nail that flawless makeup finish?Keep reading as we reveal 5 tips to help you choose the right makeup brushes for you: Consider the type of makeup you use vs the brushes shape and size Different makeup products be it for example foundation or blusher require different makeup brushes. And the shape of the brush will determine the area of the face it is best suited for.For example a large flat brush is best for applying liquid foundation, a large fluffy brush is perfect for powder foundation while a tapered (a brush that reduces in size and thickness towards the end) brush is best for precise application on smaller areas like under your eyes. Look for high-quality brush bristles Investing in high-quality makeup brushes will make all the difference in the application and longevity of your makeup. The bristles should be soft and durable, should not irritate the skin in any way, nor should they shed or lose their shape over time. Synthetic bristles are usually the best option because they are durable, easy to clean and hygienic. Synthetic brush bristles are usually made of nylon or polyester, however ELES Cosmetics’ range of professional makeup brushes are made from taklon, a “green” and allergy free synthetic fibre. Their smooth synthetic fibres do not absorb or trap pigment making it easy to keep clean. Makeup brushes with natural bristles are another option, however they are made with animal hair to provide a very soft finish. Check the makeup brush handle A comfortable handle is important to ensure steady and precise makeup application. Look for brushes with sturdy and easy to grip handles. Consider your budget There are a wide range of makeup brushes available in the market with varying price ranges. Decide on your budget and invest in good quality brushes as these will last you a long time. Keep those brushes clean Your makeup tools are meant to be washed. Besides bacteria, brushes also accumulate dead skin cells and oil which can clog your pores leading to skin irritation and pesky pimples! Also if you apply your makeup with a dirty bush the end result can be a streaky and patchy complexion! Clean brushes definitely make for a smoother makeup application! You should clean your makeup brushes once a month by swishing them in a cup of warm water with a little shampoo. Rinse the brushes and lie them flat on a towel on the counter until they dry.Still confused? Here are some of the most commonly used makeup brushes for the different makeup categories; Foundation: A flat, densely packed brush or a beauty sponge is ideal for applying foundation. Try ELES Foundation Brush or Large Concealer Brush Concealer: A small, pointed brush is best for applying concealer. A concealer brush has a small head and is ideal for targeting specific areas. Try ELES Small Concealer Brush or Tapered Detail Brush Powder: A large fluffy brush is perfect for applying powder. Look for a brush with long, fluffy bristles that can pick up just the right amount of product. Try ELES Powder Brush Blush: A medium-sized angled brush or a fan brush is great for applying blush. An angled brush allows you to apply blush precisely to your cheekbones, while a fan brush can be used to dust a light layer of blush over cheeks and other areas of your face. Try ELES Powder Blush Brush Contour: A small, angled brush or a small fan brush is best for contouring. An angled brush allows you to apply the product in a precise line, while a fan brush can be used to dust a light layer of contour powder over the face. Try ELES Tapered Powder Brush Eyeshadow: There are several brushes that are ideal for applying eyeshadow! Eek you might say, however this all depends on the look you are going for. A flat, dense brush is great for packing on colour, while a fluffy blending brush is perfect for blending out harsh lines. A small tapered brush can be used to apply eyeshadow to the crease or to smudge eyeliner. Try ELES Base Shadow Brush, Blending Brush and Small Tapered Blending Brush. Eyeliner: A small, flat makeup brush or a pointed brush is perfect for applying eyeliner. An flat brush allows you to create precise lines, while a pointed brush is ideal for created a winged liner look. Try ELES Flat Definer Brush and ELES Small Eyeliner Brush By following all these tips, you can choose the right makeup brushes that will help you achieve flawless makeup every time.

by Jo Boyden on Feb 23 2023
If you’ve had enough of looking older than you are (or feel) thanks to your ageing eyes (we’re talking wrinkles, sagging, dark circles and more), you’re worried about your once luscious lashes getting thinner and sparser, or you’re simply over people telling you how tired you look, we hear you! Unfortunately our eyes are the first area of our face to show ageing, but help is on hand, and it doesn’t involve surgery or injectables! We’ve put together the top 13 beauty tips for ageing eyes to help every mature woman look years younger naturally….keep reading…Use an Eye Cream specifically designed for mature skin, and use it religiouslyUsing an eye cream specifically designed for mature skin can help reduce wrinkles and fine lines around the eyes. Make sure to use an eye cream that contains vitamin c for skin brightening, fatty acids and peptides, which help stimulate collagen production and reduce the appearance of wrinkles.Try: Vie Collection Chrono Eyes Puffiness Dark Circles Wrinkles Cream. Formulated with hyaluronic acid, injectables-like peptide, Phytosterols + Fatty acids, Vitamin C and Vitamin B3! This beautifully fine cream deeply nourishes the eye area while reversing puffiness, dark circles, and wrinkles! Seriously! it gives immediate gratification thanks to a pearlescent finish that instantly brightens the eye area, and it has definitely calmed my puffiness, lightened my dark circles, and even smoothed my wrinkles! I’m testament to that!Invest in a gemstone facial rollerAnd thank me later! By introducing this little gem (pardon the pun!) into your morning beauty routine, you’ll calm any fluid build-up around your eye area (which unfortunately increases with age). As well as their many medicinal benefits gemstone rollers can dramatically reduce puffiness by removing excess fluid around the eyes towards your lymph nodes where it filters out toxins! So clever! To find out more about gemstone rollers and their multitude of benefits click here.Use good undereye concealerLet’s face it, undereye circles can age you! While you’ll eye cream can improve the appearance greatly, a good undereye concealer can work it’s magic by totally covering them! Firstly though you’ll want to prime your skin first. This will help fill in any lines and make the skin appear smoother (essential if you want to prevent makeup falling into the creases and exacerbating signs of eye ageing!) Use your ring finger and gently dab your primer over the wrinkles to the sides of your eyes and spread. Now it’s time for your concealer. A good undereye concealer can give you complete coverage as well as make you look bright-eyed in seconds! Choose a shade lighter than your natural skin tone (as this will help brighten the area) but also opt for a “peachy” tone as this will counteract the blueish tinge of the shadows.Try ELES Dual Action Concealer my secret weapon for concealing my dark under eye circles and helping me look like I’ve had 8 hours of blissful slumber as opposed to only 5! It’s formulated with a myriad of anti-ageing wonder ingredients including Hyaluronic acid, Caffeine, Vitamins C & E, Collagen and more! And it actually helps to gradually improve skin’s texture while concealing those obvious under eye dark circles. Its moisturising formula provides continuous hydration as well as a natural longwearing finish meaning it lasts for hours without seeping into fine lines and wrinkles! It’s seriously good stuff. Simply apply with a small concealer brush and then finish with a powder to set the concealer so it doesn’t crease. For the most brightening effect, apply your concealer in a “V” or upside-down triangle shape beneath your eye. Swipe it directly under the eye, but bring it down to a point on your cheek beside your nostril and fill in the entire area.Use a little eye shadow to create the illusion of bigger eyesTo make our eyes look bigger, gently sweep a vanilla coloured shadow on your eyelids from your eyelashes to the crease. Use a medium tone shade in the crease – and slightly above the crease if you have hooded eyes. It can make your eyes pop without you looking OTT. Then use a touch of the vanilla-coloured eyeshadow just beneath the arch of your eyebrow to lift the eye, as well as at the inner corner of the eye.Wear mascara but choose it wiselyMascara is one of the most important products for adding definition and volume to the eyes, but there are a few points you need to know when it comes to selecting the right mascara for your ageing eyes.- Check out the ingredients in the mascara you are using. You might well have fallen for the marketing hype – longer, fuller lashes in seconds, but if your mascara contains preservatives, they can irritate your eyes which in turn will make you rub them more, this results in unwanted lash loss and let’s face it you want to cling onto those lashes of yours.- Be wary of using waterproof mascara daily. Waterproof mascara does indeed cause less smudging and smearing however the formulation can be harsher on your eye lashes, causing them to dry out as well as be tougher to remove (cue rubbing!) Where possible use water-soluble long wear mascaras but when you need to go waterproof (essential for beach and pool breaks) just be sure to check out the ingredients and remove with a good eye makeup remover.- Opt for smudge proof, lash-defining mascara. Sadly one of the symptoms of ageing eyes can be skin sagging this is when wearing mascara can be tricky as more often than not the mascara will smudge all around the eyes! By choosing a long-wear lash-defining mascara like ELES Lash Fortifying Mascara you’ll reduce any mascara fall out and every lash will be evenly coated and separated for that perfect natural look. What’s more the mascara is formulated with hydrolyzed keratin, panthenol, hyaluronic acid and vitamin e to strengthen, condition and protect lashes.- Mascara expires. When it does, throw it out and buy another, even if you think you’ve got a few more weeks or months in it! Every time you use your mascara you are pumping air into the wand, this creates bacteria. The average life of a mascara once used for the first time is 3 months. An expired mascara can (and will!) spark lash loss and lets face it you don’t need to be losing any more lashes!Don’t use an eye lash curler to curl your lashes, try this instead…You’ve been told to curl your lashes with an eyelash curler to create more volume and lift for your lashes, but this isn’t a good option as we get older. This is because as we age our lashes do too. It’s inevitable they will get weaker and thinner. Using an eyelash curler can create more damage than good and the curler can cause lashes to break. Instead a popular way to curl your lashes is by using a metal teaspoon. Press the spoon, concave side in, against your eyelid above your lashes. Now use your fingertip to press your eyelashes against the convex curve of the bottom of the spoon. Hold your lashes in place for 10 to 15 seconds and repeat in the corners. Or you can even use something as simple as your finger to curl your lashes! Simply close your eye and use your fingertip to gently push your upper eyelashes up against the top of your eyelid. Hold the eyelashes up for 30 seconds and then release them.Use a white eye pencil or waterline liner to brighten eyesAfter applying your eyeshadow and mascara, next line the inner rim of your lower lash line or waterline as it’s otherwise known with a white pencil or a nude waterline liner! (We recommend ELES’s Waterline liner). By doing so it’ll immediately open up your eyes as well as make the whites of your eyes look whiter (synonymous with younger looking eyes!)Don’t Rub Your Eyes! For itchy or irritated eyes try this insteadRubbing your eyes can cause wrinkles and dark circles. If you have itchy or irritated eyes, use a cold compress or eye drops to relieve the symptom. Applying slices of cucumbers is also a great idea! The cooling effect of the cucumber will relax the skin and alleviate any irritation or swelling around the eyes!Reduce Sun ExposureWe all know excessive exposure to the sun is the no.1 reason for skin ageing. But too much time soaking up those harmful rays can also result in premature wrinkles and age spots around the delicate eye area too. Make sure you’re always wearing sunglasses when outdoors to protect your peepers but also wear a hat and apply sunscreen too! You protect the rest of your skin, so don’t forgo the eye zone!Lay off the salt!Believe it or not, too much salt in your diet can affect your eyes and make them look older. Unfortunately, the delicate skin around your eyes is at higher risk of getting puffy the more salt you consume. Extra sodium unfortunately makes your body retain water. This excess water causes puffiness. Aghhh. So, try to ditch (ok maybe just cut down!) on those favourite foods (and drinks) of yours that are heavy on the salt.Stay HydratedWhen your body is dehydrated, your skin cells start to lose their plumpness. The skin around your eyes is already thinner than other parts of the body, so any reduction in plumpness in this area is visible relatively quickly. As a result, dehydration can cause your eye area to appear darker, discoloured, sunken, or hollow so you will look older than your years! By drinking plenty of water (aim for 8 glasses a day) you will help keep your skin hydrated and smooth, which can help reduce the appearance of those unwanted obvious wrinkles, fine lines and dark circles!. Remember water hydrates and plumps skin cells to make your skin look brighter, vibrant, and more youthful. It’s amazing stuff!Don’t go to sleep with your eye makeup onI’m sure we’ve all been guilty of skipping our evening cleansing routine once in a while because the idea of peeling ourselves off our bed just doesn’t feel like an option, but did you know just how bad this can be for your eyes? Not removing your makeup at night hinders the skin renewal process that takes place while you sleep. The days makeup and grime can clog the pores and trap dirt which can be damaging to your skin but you’re your delicate eye area. Mascaras make your lashes stiff; it’s part of its job. But leaving it on while you sleep will cause the stiffness to turn into dryness that can trigger lashes to break and soon result to lash fallouts! So instead opt for a good, gentle, easy-to-use eye makeup remover. We love Phytomer’s Doux Contour Eye and Lip Waterproof Makeup Remover as it simply melts away makeup and grime with minimum effort! Combining the effectiveness of an oil (a trio of oils in fact) and the gentleness of a lotion, this ultra-hydrating makeup remover, eradicates even the most stubborn eye makeup both gently and fast!Get Enough SleepNot getting enough sleep can cause your skin to look puffy and dull. Aim for 7-8 hours of sleep a night to ensure your skin looks fresh and youthful. With the right products and habits and by following these simple tips, you can keep eyes looking younger for longer without resorting to expensive treatments or surgery.

These are the best face masks for every skin concern

by Jo Boyden on Feb 16 2023
With so many steps in your daily skincare routine from cleansing and toning, to exfoliating and moisturising, you might be wondering if masking is really another necessary step, after all, what more can this product do for your skin that your cleanser, toner, exfoliator, serum and moisturiser hasn’t already done? Well, the answer to that is a lot actually! Face masks are in fact an essential part of any skin care routine, and for very good reason. Not only do they help protect your skin from environmental pollutants and other irritants, but they also help to keep skin looking and feeling healthy. They are also a great way to give your skin a boost of nourishment and help to target any skin concerns you may have too.So, if you’re looking to brighten your dull complexion, reduce wrinkles, hydrate your skin, or fight acne, there is a face mask for you! But with so many masks available, it can be hard to know which one to choose. Below we’ve rounded up the best face masks on BC for every skin concern, as recommended by the BC Pros of course! For Brightening: If you’re looking to brighten your skin tone and even out your complexion, look no further than a vitamin C mask. Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant that helps to fight free radicals and reduce the appearance of dark spots. It also helps to stimulate collagen production, giving your skin a youthful glow.Try; Vie Collection Photo C Bright Radiance Mask. Inspired by phototherapy, this cream-mask restores the skin's original radiance and luminosity. Its formula combines Vitamin C with a refreshing molecule to reveal an incredibly radiant and brightened skin appearance right after the first application.“I bought this mask to get rid of dullness after reading about it. I have used it 1-2 times a week for the last few weeks and have definitely noticed a difference in my skin. It’s starting to get the glow back after months of lack lustre. My skin always feels beautifully soft after washing it off too!” MiaFor Fighting Acne & breakouts: If you’re struggling with acne, a detoxifying charcoal or clay mask will be your best bet. Charcoal and clay masks help to draw out impurities and absorb excess oil, making them great for helping to reduce the appearance of breakouts.Try; Pevonia’s Pure Skin Charcoal Mask. It is the perfect antidote for congested, dull, acne prone skin. It neutralises pollutants, draws out impurities and leaves skin glowing with pure freshness!“Being in my 50's I wasn't sure if this would dry my skin out, but I bought it coz I had a few breakouts - hormonal, I guess. I've used it daily for about 3 days and it's totally cleared my skin up - it feels de-congested, clear and smooth. I love this mask - will try the collagen mask next.” MelindaN.B For the month of February, 2023 in conjunction with our Valentine’s Perfect Pairs Promotion, when you purchase Pevonia’s Pure Skin Charcoal Mask (and Pevonia’s Collagen Mask and Green Apple Mask) you’ll receive our best-selling Gentle Exfoliating Cleanser 50ml for FREE. For Reducing Wrinkles: If you’re looking to reduce the appearance of wrinkles, a retinol mask is your best bet. Retinol is a form of vitamin A that helps to stimulate collagen production and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Look for masks that contain retinol, as well as ingredients like hyaluronic acid to help hydrate and soothe your skin.Try; Vie Collection Retinopur Intensive Retinol Mask. It’s a unique foaming mask formulated with encapsulated retinol (which means it prevents inflammation often associated with retinol) and kaolin clay to effectively address concerns with acne and wrinkles while refining pores and mattifying skin (without causing irritation or dryness.) We love it.” My skin feels brand new after using this mask. I love how bright and vibrant it makes my skin and have noticed an improvement in both fine lines and pore size. I have quite sensitive skin and find retinol can be intense if overused so I tend to only use it once every two weeks and as a result have not found this to irritate or dry my skin out at all. Love It!!” FifiFor Hydrating skin: If your skin is feeling dry and dull, a hydrating mask can help. Hyaluronic acid is a powerful moisturizing ingredient that helps to plump and hydrate the skin. Look for masks that contain hyaluronic acid, as well as ingredients like aloe vera and jojoba oil to help soothe and nourish your skin.Try: Vie Collection Mesoforce Hyaluronic Acid Vitamin Mask. This revitalizing and nourishing mask takes its inspiration from mesotherapy to visibly revitalize the skin. Its formula contains a cocktail of vitamins and hyaluronic acid that ensure beautifully nourished, plumped and radiant skin after every application.“This product is amazing. My skin feels hydrated, smooth and plump and I know it’s because of this beauty! A little goes a long way, and one tube lasts me almost 6 months with regular use. Can’t be without it!” ErinFor soothing sensitivities. Just because your skin is sensitive doesn’t mean you should not include this vital step to your skincare routine, you just need to look for soothing ingredients.Try; Phytomer Accept Comfort Mask. You will love this soothing, healing mask! Not only does it calm red, irritated skin almost instantaneously, but it will strengthen your sensitive skin too. Healing is faster when applying this mask and it leaves your skin feeling beautifully hydrated, smooth, nourished, calm and comfortable for days!“This product is my saviour!! I have sensitive skin that has been angry and red lately due to some shifts in my skincare regime. This mask has made a marked improvement overnight. I used to use it weekly and don't know why I stopped. Now, I have used it 3 times this week and will move to 2x a week once my skin shows permanent healing. I will never be without this again!” MollyNo matter what skin concern you’re trying to target, there is a face mask out there that can help. With the right mask, you can help to improve your skin and give it the nourishment it needs.

The ELES Baked Bronzer in Sunbeam is perfect for recreating this bronzed glow. Apply a little extra to your forehead to add that “sun-kissed” warmth and if you want to be a real show stopper, dab on a little stick illuminator above the apples of your cheeks, down the centre of your nose and in the inner corner of your eyes.To make eyes pop, apply a light sweep of ELES Mineral Shadow in Vanilla to your eye lids and then blend softly above the crease of your eye lid, as well as beneath the lower lash line. Don’t be afraid to use the ELES Waterliner pencil in both the inner corners of your eyes as well as on your waterline. Complete the eyes with lashings of mascara. For that subtle flush of colour on the lips, use a lip liner to gently fill in (we recommend the ELES Gel Lipliner in Nude) and then add a touch of lippie such as the ELES Moisture Crème Lipstick in Parfait.

The biggest beauty trends for 2023 revealed

by Jo Boyden on Jan 20 2023
From cloud skin to cloudless skin, glass skin and skin slugging, we’ve seen a lot of beauty trends come and some go over the last few years, but now we’re bringing to you some of the latest beauty trends predicted to be all the rage this year! Read on as we reveal everything you need to know about the 2023 trends we are loving and are sure you will too! Ceramides to lead the tideIt’s not new, 2022 in fact saw an increase in ceramide rich skincare products, but this super ingredient, which has been the underdog until now, is predicted to hit a new high this year! Why? Because after years of exfoliating acids and anti-ageing retinol, it’s time to reduce skin sensitivities and build up our skin barrier, and ceramides do exactly this! They support a healthy barrier all whilst securing hydration to our skin. Plus, combining ceramides with other nourishing and skin nurturing ingredients such as fatty acids, hyaluronic acid, probiotics and niacinamide leads to intense hydration and optimum skin health.Try;[caption id="attachment_3555" align="aligncenter" width="200"] Ageless Skin Collagen Mask[/caption][caption id="attachment_4722" align="aligncenter" width="200"] CleanRefresh™ Foaming Cleanser[/caption][caption id="attachment_4497" align="aligncenter" width="180"] Pevonia Marine Collagen Cream[/caption]Hyper-glowing skinWhen is glowing skin not in? A look we all want to achieve on the daily I’m sure, however this year’s rendition sees glow-getting skincare coupled with the right highlighter to create almost mirror-like skin. Bronzers will take a small step back as the focus no longer falls on contouring, but high shine. It’s all about hydrating and brightening ingredients to create this much-loved trend. We’re talking skincare enriched with hyaluronic acid and vitamin C.Skincare & Makeup hybridsSkincare and makeup hybrids, otherwise known as ‘skincare makeup’ as we like to call it at BC, isn’t exactly new, but this year the industry is ramping up awareness as we focus heavily on skin health not just skin’s appearance. Makeup products are better than ever as they are designed to not only conceal imperfections but actually improve them too. 2023 will see us taking extra steps to protect our skin starting by allowing it to breathe freely even when wearing layers of makeup – makeup formulated with the best skincare ingredients from hyaluronic acid to vitamin c, collagen, ceramides and more!Try;[caption id="attachment_4108" align="aligncenter" width="250"] Baked Finishing Powder in Diffused Light[/caption] [caption id="attachment_4068" align="aligncenter" width="200"] Retexturizing Face Primer[/caption][caption id="attachment_4686" align="aligncenter" width="250"] ELES Age-Defying BB Cream[/caption]Au Naturale / Barefaced beautyWho doesn’t love a natural look when you are using miracle makeup to hide those flaws! Well this year is predicted to see a big focus around barefaced beauty, not a new trend we know but this year’s interpretation is all about letting your skin breath freely but without having to go makeup free! Base makeup will see a shift from heavier matte foundations to tinted SPF’s, tinted moisturisers, and bb creams, enhanced by highlighters, blush and bronzer to sculpt and define features. Finish the look with subtle dewy lips.Try;[caption id="attachment_4363" align="aligncenter" width="200"] Sunscreen SPF 40 with Blue Light Shield[/caption][caption id="attachment_4587" align="aligncenter" width="200"] ELES Mineral Sheer Tint SPF 20[/caption][caption id="attachment_4747" align="aligncenter" width="200"] Vitaminic Concentrate[/caption]Vinyl lipsThis year sees the move away from matte mouths to satin, glossy and shiny luscious lips. We’re talking a level of gleam glam we haven’t seen before! Lips like latex in bold bright shades.Body beautifyingEverything we’re doing for our face, from masks to serums, exfoliation to sculpting, we’ll be doing for our body this year! it’s time to treat the skin on your body just as well as the skin on your face. We’ve moved further than a body lotion or oils, though to full body exfoliation, body contouring and body sculpting.[caption id="attachment_6184" align="aligncenter" width="200"] Phytomer Morpho Designer - Contouring Crystal Emulsion 150ml[/caption][caption id="attachment_6185" align="aligncenter" width="200"] Pevonia Stem Cells Body Corrector[/caption][caption id="attachment_6186" align="aligncenter" width="200"] Phytomer Celluli Night Coach Intensive Cellulite Sleeping Mask[/caption]
combination skin vs oily skin

Combination skin vs oily skin: Which type is your skin?

by Jo Boyden on Dec 23 2022
With the weather warming up now summer is finally underway, you may well have noticed a change in your skin. Perhaps it’s looking and feeling a little more oily than usual, with dry areas even? Or maybe you’re experiencing a constant shiny complexion which let’s face it is far from desirable. Unfortunately with a rise in temperature and humidity, comes an increase in our skin’s sebum production (the oil secreted by the glands in the skin) so it’s then that we might all of a sudden self-diagnose our skin as oily, when in fact it might be a combination complexion you actually have? Many of us do find it hard to tell these two skin conditions apart, after all they do share certain similarities, but oily and combination skin are in fact two very different skin conditions and therefore need to be treated in different ways.So if you think you are one of many dealing with either oily or combination skin, we are here to tell you the difference between the two, and exactly which skin type it is you have. What is combination skin?If you have combination skin, you do indeed suffer from oily areas on your face, but this tends to be concentrated to your T-zone (forehead, nose and chin) while your cheeks remain normal or dry. That said, your skin can also be oily and dry in different areas, or your might have noticed your pores are enlarged, or you’re experiencing some signs of sensitivity. With that said if you’ve noticed you have two or more skin issues occurring at the same time, it’s a sign you have combination skin. What is oily skin?On the other hand, oily skin is skin that is shiny (or greasy) all over the face, although those with oily skin may also notice a prominence along their T-zone, where they may be more prone to pimples. People with oily skin often struggle with large pores too which can get easily clogged with sweat and oils, this is why oily skin had a tendency to breakout where pores are more prominent such as the cheeks and T-zone. Another way to determine that you have an oily skin type is that shortly after cleansing, oil will return! After cleansing, oily skin will feel clean and oil-free, almost the only time it feels that way. Shortly after cleansing, oil will return. What are the best products for oily and combination skin?Want to know which products are best suited to your oily skin? Click here.Combination skin? They can blur imperfections While makeup primers won’t enhance your skin quite like a bronzer, or conceal pesky pimples like a foundation, they are formulated to hide and blur imperfections! They are in fact touted as the photoshop of the makeup world! How they actually blur imperfections is down to two key ingredients: silicone particles which “fill in the gaps” on the surface of skin to even it out, and light-diffusing particles which scatter the light that hits the surface of the skin, creating an optical illusion that tricks the eye and makes pores and fine lines less visible. Sounds ideal right? They combat shine This will be music to those of us with oily skin! Indeed mattifying face primers can combat shine by balancing out excess oil, this in turn creates a smooth base for your makeup so it won’t slide off your face come lunchtime! They correct discolouration if you struggle with discolouration or hyperpigmentation, a face primer can be an important component in your makeup routine. Colour-correcting primers even out the skin tone and neutralize discoloration as the tinted pigments, antioxidants, and vitamin E brighten skin and minimize visible imperfections. They are packed with skin loving ingredients Many face primers, including our range of ELES makeup primers, are like an extension of your skincare, enriched with skin-loving ingredients including Vitamins A, C & E and salicylic acid to not only promote skin cell turnover and nourish and hydrate the skin but tackle and conceal common concerns like dullness, dryness and redness too! When do you apply a face primer? In terms of application, a face primer should be applied to perfectly cleansed skin, after your moisturiser and before you apply your makeup. Can you use primer without makeup?Absolutely! For no-makeup days, applying a primer is one of the easiest ways to conceal imperfections, colour correct, mattify the skin and combat shine and oiliness. You can apply your face primer after your daily serums and moisturiser. Are makeup primers for everyone?Whether you love a less-is-more makeup look or prefer dramatic glam, a makeup primer is the perfect tool, and you can choose the right primer for your skin's specific needs, from hydrating to pore perfecting and more…Our top picksFor dry to sensitive skinIf your skin is a little dry, opt for a multi-functional face primer that will keep makeup in place, while hydrating, firming and plumping the skin with a gentle blend of nourishing botanical oils. AHAs, BHAs and your skin: Everything you need to know

by Jo Boyden on Dec 15 2022
If you are a lover of skincare, you’ve likely heard of AHA and BHAs, but do you know what it is they actually are, what they can do for your skin or what the difference between these exfoliating acids really are? Keep reading for everything you need to know about BHA, AHAs and your skin. What are AHAs and how do they work?AHAs, or otherwise known as Alpha Hydroxy Acids, are water-soluble acids derived from fruits and plants. They’re considered a chemical exfoliant, which means that they use chemicals — aka acids or enzymes — to buff away dead skin cells. The most common AHA’s in skincare are glycolic acid, lactic acid, citric acid and malic acid and they are typically found in cleansers and exfoliators but can sometimes feature in masks, serums and moisturisers too!AHAs work by breaking down the ‘glue’ that binds dead skin cells to the skin. Because they have a large molecule size, they primarily work on the top layers of the skin, making them particularly beneficial for those with dry, dehydrated or hyperpigmented skin. By removing dead and dry skin cells, AHAs smooth skin texture, brighten skin tone, fade pigmentation, and can also reduce the chance of breakouts from occurring! What are BHA’s and how do they work? The most well-known BHA is salicylic acid – chances are you’ll have heard of this one if you have breakout-prone skin, since it’s found in many spot treatments.Like AHAs, BHAs also work by breaking down the ‘glue’ that binds dull, dead skin to the surface, however they work on a much deeper level than AHAs, penetrating deep into the pores, unclogging and removing dead skin cells, excess sebum and congestion. This is because BHAs are oil-soluble, making them an effective treatment for oily, breakout and acne-prone skin. Because BHAs can penetrate so deep, removing both dead skin cells and excess oil (which when combined can clog pores and lead to breakouts) they are an effective whitehead and blackhead buster. BHAs also act as an anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory, so they work to kill acne-causing bacteria and reduce the redness and swelling of spots too. What is the difference between AHA’s and BHA’s?Although both of these ingredients are exfoliating acids and work to improve the appearance of skin by exfoliating it, they actually work in different ways. AHA’s work to break down the glue that holds dead skin cells together while BHA’s go deeper into the pores to remove dirt and oil.Are AHAs and BHAs good for all skin types? If you have oily and blemish prone skin, you’re best to choose skincare products formulated with BHA’s. If your skin tends to be on the dry, dehydrated side, AHA’s should be your go to.While these acids can dramatically improve the appearance of your skin, it’s important to remember that both AHAs and BHAs are active ingredients which (if overused) can impact your skin’s natural barrier, cause irritation, and increase skin’s UV sensitivity. For this reason, it’s essential to understand how to use acids properly, what to do if you over exfoliate your skin, and the best AHA and BHA skincare for your skin type. How to use AHA’s and BHA’s properlyAs with most skincare ingredients, especially exfoliants, AHAs and BHAs have their downsides, including possible sun sensitivity, peeling and itching, so you need to be sure not to overuse any products formulated with AHAs and BHA’s and be extra diligent about slathering on your sunscreen…daily, all year round! Before you incorporate AHA and/or BHA products into your daily skincare routine, you need to consider the other skincare products you are using, paying close attention to the ingredient list to avoid irritation since AHAs and BHA’s might not be compatible with them. It is best to steer clear of your retinol cream or serum on a day you are using AHA and BHA rich skincare as the combination may cause excessive skin sensitivity, irritation, and redness. On the other hand AHAs and BHAs can be mixed with moisturizing ingredients like hyaluronic acid, ceramides, to get effective and long lasting results.AHAs and BHAs themselves can be combined. However AHAs such as glycolic acid, tend to be best for dry, dehydrated skin and surface-level skin concerns like acne scaring, whereas BHAs such as salicylic acid, are best for oily, blemish, and acne-prone skin types. You can use both by including skincare products which contain both ingredients, or by alternating your products. Try these AHA skincare favourites;Pevonia Renewing Glycocides CreamIf your skin is looking a tad dull and devitalised and you’re forever coveting that ‘insta-glow’, this product is your answer! Mature skin? The best way to cover under eye dark circles

by Jo Boyden on Dec 09 2022
Eyes looking tired? Dark circles more apparent? Unfortunately as we age so do our eyes! In fact our eyes experience ageing before any other part of our face, so dark under-eye circles, puffy peepers and fine lines and wrinkles are a given. All is not lost though! By arming yourself with a few key products, familiarising yourself with a couple of simple makeup tricks, and following our step-by-step guide, you can both improve and cover under-eye dark circles and other signs of eye ageing, even for those of us with mature skin! Firstly why do we get dark under-eye circles as we age? As we get older, our skin becomes thinner. This is the result of a decrease in fat and collagen production (which maintains our skin’s elasticity) As this occurs, the dark blood vessels beneath our skin become more visible, causing the area below our eyes to darken. Dark under eye circles can also be the cause of lack of sleep (which unfortunately increases with age too!) as well as poor blood circulation and insufficient toxin drainage! What is the best way to improve and cover dark under-eye circles? Start by giving yourself a mini facial massage with a gemstone roller By doing so you’ll help improve circulation, remove toxins from the eye area significantly improving dark circles and bags under the eyes, reduce inflammation, refresh the skin and tone your face! In fact gemstone rollers offer a multitude of other benefits too to your skin too. Click here to find out more. Invest in a good eye cream or gel or both! For mornings when your eyes are feeling particularly puffy, reaching for a cooling eye gel will do wonders for reviving this delectate area while reducing puffiness. We love Pevonia’s C Evolutive Eye Gel, it’s a personal favourite of mine and highly recommended by the BC Pros. It’s a wonderful, cooling gel, formulated with anti-ageing dynamo Vitamin C, skin saviours’ hyaluronic acid and Ginkgo biloba, as well as green coffee and it’ll have your peepers decongested and depuffed in one swift application! Also use a tapping motion with your finger which you apply it. This can help get rid of any fluid that’s accumulated under the delicate eye area.  If it’s dark circles you appear to be constantly suffering from, we highly recommend Vie Collection’s Chrono Eyes Puffiness-Dark Circles Wrinkle Cream. It’s a mouthful to say, but a product that does exactly what it says! It’s a beautifully fine cream enriched with moisturising ingredients to nourish the eye area while reversing puffiness, dark circles, and wrinkles! Oh and it instantly brightens the eye area too! Use a primer under your eyes before applying makeup As you age your skin becomes more prone to fine lines around your eyes. You want to conceal them but it’s best to do so by using a primer first. This will help fill in any lines and make the skin appear smoother (essential if you want to prevent makeup falling into the creases and exacerbating signs of eye ageing!) Use your ring finger and gently dab your primer over the wrinkles to the sides of your eyes and spread. Invest in a good concealer When it comes to camouflaging dark under eye circles, a concealer is by far your best bet. A good undereye concealer can give you complete coverage as well as make you look bright-eyed in seconds! Choose a shade lighter than your natural skin tone (as this will help brighten the area) but also opt for a “peachy” tone as this will counteract the blueish tinge of the shadows. Try ELES Dual Action Concealer. my secret weapon for concealing my dark under eye circles and helping me look like I’ve had 8 hours of blissful slumber as opposed to only 5! Swipe it directly under the eye, but bring it down to a point on your cheek beside your nostril and fill in the entire area. Don’t forget to add a little illuminator and waterline liner to your eyes too!  Adding a little white eyeshadow (or pencil or illuminator) to the inner corner of your eyes, as well as waterline pencil to the waterline of your eyes, you’ll attract attention away from ageing eyes and create the illusion of younger, brighter, more wide awake eyes with one little dot of the finger!

Oily skin? This is the best toner for you

by Jo Boyden on Dec 02 2022
If you deal with oily skin day in and day out, no matter what the time of year, you’ll likely be on the quest to find the best skincare routine to keep your oily skin at bay. And yes, while there are targeted cleansers, moisturisers and serums to battle oily skin, have you ever considered using a toner too? If not, you should now, and we are here to tell you why. Keep reading to find out why a toner can make a significant impact to your oily skin and what the best toner for oily skin is too (as recommended by our BC experts of course!) Firstly, what is a toner exactly?A toner, or otherwise known as a lotion, tonic or cleansing lotion, is designed to clean the skin, removing oil and traces of dirt. Toners also moisturise, protect and refresh the skin. Sound similar to a cleanser? They do indeed have similar qualities however cleansers, while they wash off makeup, dirt and oil leaving skin clean, fresh and tight, can throw out the natural pH balance of our skin when used with water. Dependant on how hard the water is our natural pH balance of 5.5 can increase up to 9.5! which can lead to dryness and irritation (yes even if your skin is always oily!) This is where a toner comes into play! It will restore skin to its normal pH, removing any cleanser and hard water residue. It will also remove any additional makeup, excess oil and dirt that your cleanser has left behind which helps control acne and oil skin at the same time! What’s more, a toner will also prepare the skin to drink up your post-cleansing serum and moisturiser (and any other treatments that you may apply) providing optimal results for your skin! Is a toner really a necessary step in your skincare routine? You might have been wondering if a toner is essential or just another step in your skincare routine that perhaps you can skip? The thing is if you find that your cleanser isn’t removing impurities, a face toner will come in and finish the job by removing any excess makeup, bacteria build-up, grime or dirt. Thanks to some innovative, soothing and active ingredients, a face toner will also balance out the PH levels in your skin and work in conjunction with your other skincare products to build up a strong defence against unwanted acne breakouts and blemishes.Toners are especially helpful and necessary for people with oily or acne-prone skin, or for people who want extra cleansing after wearing makeup or other heavy skin products such as sunscreen, When should you use a toner?ideally, a toner should be applied twice a day, once after the cleansing process in the morning and the second time, during the night-time skin care routine after thorough removal of makeup. What is the best toner for oily skin?Phytomer Oligomarine Flawless Skin Tonic. Actually ideal for combination to oily skin types, this toner completes makeup removal and cleansing for really clear and clean skin. From the 1st application, the skin feels fresh, looks clear and is evenly toned. Day after day, excess oil dramatically reduces and pores are tightened. Oh and your complexion will be more radiant too!
