Using retinol? Here are the mistakes we see most often

by Jo Boyden on Jun 10 2026
Retinol has earned its reputation as one of the most powerful anti‑ageing ingredients in skincare. Dermatologists swear by it, beauty editors are constantly writing about it, and if you’re in your 30s, 40s or beyond, chances are someone has already told you that you need to be using it. So you bought your retinol serum, slathered it on, hoped for an overnight miracle… and woke up with dry, flaky, irritated skin that somehow made you look older, not younger! If this sounds familiar, don’t panic, and definitely don’t give up on retinol just yet! The problem usually isn’t the ingredient itself, but how you’ve used it. Retinol can deliver incredible results, but it's also one of the easiest skincare ingredients to get wrong. Over the years, we’ve seen countless customers give up on this powerhouse ingredient because they assumed it simply wasn’t right for their skin, when in reality they were making one (or several!) very common mistakes. The good news? They’re all easy to fix! If you’ve recently introduced retinol into your routine, or you’re thinking about giving it a try, here’s what you need to know, the 7 common retinol mistakes we see time and time again, and exactly how to avoid them.   The most common retinol mistakes (and how to avoid them) Mistake 1. Starting too strong, too soon This is one of the biggest mistakes we see is people jumping straight into a high-strength retinol and using it every night. Retinol is an ingredient that works best when introduced gradually. Starting slowly gives your skin time to adapt and can help minimise irritation, redness and flaking. What to do instead: Start with a gentle formula like Pevonia’s Micro Retinol range and use it two to three nights per week before gradually increasing frequency. Pevonia’s Micro Retinol range is a great, safe, and side-effect free alternative to using prescription Retinoic Acid. What’s more, every product in the Micro-Retinol® line contains a powerhouse trio of vitamin C, Vitamin E, and Micro-Retinol®! The addition of vitamin C and E not only ensures Micro-Retinol®’s stability, but also that the skin’s nutrients and density are renewed and preserved!   Mistake 2: Applying retinol to wet skin This is a sneaky mistake that almost everyone makes! When your skin is wet or even damp, it acts like a sponge, absorbing products much faster and deeper than usual. While this is amazing for hyaluronic acid, it can be the opposite for retinol! As the quick, deep absorption can greatly increases the risk of dryness, peeling, redness, and irritation. What to do instead: After cleansing your face at night, pat it thoroughly dry with a towel. Then, wait 5 to 10 minutes before applying your retinol. Ensuring your skin is completely dry slows down the absorption rate, giving you all the anti-ageing benefits without the angry side effects.   Mistake 3. Using more product than you need When it comes to retinol, more isn't better. Applying a thick layer won't deliver faster results and may simply increase the likelihood of irritation. What to do instead: A pea-sized amount is usually enough for the entire face.   Mistake 4. Forgetting moisturiser Many people assume retinol should be applied on its own in a serum form and left to work its magic. Unfortunately, this can leave skin feeling dry, tight and uncomfortable. What to do instead: Follow your retinol serum with a retinol moisturiser, or another nourishing moisturiser to help support your skin barrier and maintain hydration.   Mistake 5. Skipping SPF This is arguably the most important mistake on the list! Retinol can increase your skin's sensitivity to the sun. Using retinol at night but neglecting SPF during the day can undermine your results and increase the risk of sun damage. What to do instead: Wear a broad-spectrum SPF every single morning, regardless of the weather (you should be anyway if your aim is to prevent premature ageing!)   Mistake 6. Mixing too many active ingredients Retinol doesn't always play nicely with every ingredient in your skincare cabinet! Using strong exfoliating acids (like glycolic & salicylic acids), retinol and other potent actives (like vitamin C, Benzoyl Peroxide) all at once can leave skin irritated and overwhelmed. What to do instead: Keep your routine simple and introduce new active ingredients gradually. You can still use these ingredients in your overall skincare routine just never on the same morning or night. For best results use your retinol at night and vitamin C in the morning. And the days you use your exfoliating acids, have a rest from retinol.  The ingredients that do pair perfectly with retinol include hyaluronic acid, ceramides and niacinamide.   Mistake 7. Expecting instant results We live in a world of overnight shipping and instant gratification, but retinol doesn't work that way! Visible improvements in skin texture, tone and fine lines can take weeks or even months to appear but it will! You just need to be patient. What to do instead: Consistency is key. Stick with your routine and give your skin time to respond. The results are worth waiting for! To learn more about retinol. What it does, what other skincare ingredients it works best with (and which to avoid) and the many benefits, click here.   Retinol remains one of the most researched and effective ingredients in skincare, but success comes down to how you use it. Remember to start slowly, support your skin barrier, wear SPF daily and be patient with the process, then reap the rewards! When used correctly, retinol can become one of the hardest-working products in your skincare routine, helping to improve the appearance of fine lines, uneven skin tone and overall skin texture over time.

The best anti-ageing skincare products for women over 40

by Jo Boyden on May 29 2026
Let’s be completely honest, by the time we hit our 40s and beyond, we do not have the time or the patience for a complicated 10-step skincare routine that delivers mediocre results. We want quality, we want advanced ingredients, and we want to see visible changes when we look in the mirror! Treating mature skin effectively isn't about throwing the strongest acid at our face or overloading our skin with trendy products filled with shallow promises! It’s about investing in formulas that firm, plump, and protect your skin barrier while supporting collagen production and long-term skin health. Keep reading for the youth boosting skincare we always recommend for women over 40.   The skincare ingredients women over 40 should actually be using Before we get into the products themselves, it’s important to understand the ingredients that genuinely make a visible difference to ageing skin. As we age, our skin naturally produces less collagen, loses elasticity and becomes drier, thinner and more reactive. The right active ingredients can dramatically improve hydration, firmness, brightness and overall skin health while helping skin look smoother, plumper and more radiant. These are the ingredients we believe are truly worth investing in when it comes to age-defying skincare: Exosomes – Help support skin renewal, repair and collagen production. Peptides – Support firmer, stronger-looking skin by encouraging collagen production. Retinol – The gold-standard anti-ageing ingredient for smoothing wrinkles and improving skin texture. Vitamin C – Brightens skin, boosts radiance and helps defend against free radical damage. Collagen – Helps improve skin firmness, hydration and elasticity. Hyaluronic Acid – Intensely hydrates and plumps the skin for a smoother, fresher appearance.   The anti-ageing products we always recommend\ The serums The investment: Hubislab MineExo Peptide Ampoule Why it’s worth it: This high-performance serum is a standout for anyone looking to restore, firm, and deeply hydrate their skin. Powered by Exosome Technology (one of the most talked-about innovations in advanced skincare right now!) It helps support skin renewal by improving the delivery of powerful actives where they are needed most. It delivers peptides, growth factors, and antioxidants deep into the skin to stimulate collagen, improve elasticity, soften the look of wrinkles and protect the skin barrier! Hyaluronic acid and hydrolyzed collagen deeply hydrate skin, while a powerhouse vitamin complex including retinol, vitamin C and vitamin E brightens and helps defend against free radical damage. “This serum gives the skin the most amount of plumping you can see the transformation before your very eyes. Skin feels hydrated and fine line disappear within days of using it.” – Shelley Veitch   The investment: Vie Collection Serum De Vie – High Performance Youth Concentrate Why it’s worth it: For those serious about combating the signs of ageing, this powerful, beautifully nourishing serum is a game-changer. Its advanced formula works at a cellular level to protect skin cells while targeting fine lines, wrinkles, loss of elasticity and hyperpigmentation, helping to restore a youthful, firm and smooth complexion. With its powerful blend of antioxidants, vitamin B3 and EGF-like peptides, it helps to stimulate collagen production and improve skin elasticity while niacinamide slows the transfer of melanin to key parts of the skin to fade the look of dark spots and age spots. It’s the ultimate weapon in your anti-ageing arsenal, believe me! “This is the best serum! I’m on my second bottle, I can see that my face improves a lot, more bright, healthy and firmer!” – Sarah M.    The moisturisers The investment: Vie Collection Time Control Deep Wrinkles Firming Rich Cream Why it’s worth it: This advanced corrective cream was created in conjunction with a respected Cosmetic Surgeon to help enhance the appearance of ageing skin and support the visible results of cosmetic procedures such as BotoxTM and fillers, while also offering a powerful non-invasive alternative for those wanting impressive anti-ageing results without interventions. Highly concentrated with advanced anti-ageing and nourishing ingredients including pro-collagen peptides, hyaluronic acid, EGF-like peptides, trace elements and minerals. It effectively helps to enhance skin elasticity, reduce the appearance of deep wrinkles and soothe the discomfort that thin and mature skin types can experience. You’ll notice immediate results as skin feels and appears smoother, softer and more supple and after continued use wrinkles are visibly filled and skin is noticeably firmer. Outstanding stuff! “I have been using this firming cream for a month now and I can honestly say it has reduced the appearance of even my deepest wrinkles! I was even asked if I’d had botox the other day! Winning!” – Anne K The investment: Pevonia’s Micro-Retinol Essential Moisturiser Why it’s worth it: If you invest in only one treatment for ageing skin, make it a high-quality retinol cream! When it comes to anti-ageing, retinol (vitamin A) remains the holy grail of skincare and one of the most important ingredients to incorporate into your routine, even if you have sensitive skin! Why? Because it tells sluggish skin cells to speed up their turnover, effectively smoothing out texture and fine lines from the inside out! The problem? Many people are afraid to use retinol because so many retinol products on the market are overly harsh leaving skin red, flaky, irritated and dehydrated which can actually make skin appear more aged and compromised! That’s exactly why Pevonia’s Micro-Retinol range stands out. Using an advanced stabilised delivery system, this next-generation formula delivers all the incredible benefits of Retinol while remaining beautifully hydrating, soothing and far gentler on the skin than traditional Retinol products! Formulated with Retinol, Vitamin C, Marine Collagen, Hyaluronic Acid and nourishing Squalane, this powerhouse moisturiser works to smooth fine lines, brighten uneven skin tone, deeply hydrate and restore firmness without the irritation commonly associated with Vitamin A products. It truly is the ultimate all-rounder for mature skin! “This is the most beautiful cream I have ever used; light texture, non greasy, non shiny. Changes in my skin are an increased smoothing of lines and crepe-skin areas, softening, hydrating and contouring, and reduced pigmentation. Some results were instantly visible and now after three weeks my skin just keeps improving. I am 60 and tried this after other brands became ineffective. Now my skin appears luminous and more refined. So, I am going to purchase the whole range. Its a surprise to see a brighter smoother complexion at my age.” – Annie The Investment: Pevonia Age Correction Marine Collagen Cream Why it’s worth it: To fight the structural slackness that happens as collagen levels naturally decline, your daily moisturiser needs to do heavy lifting! You need a lipid-rich formula that mimics the skin's natural proteins to bring back that signature "bounce” and boy does this cream deliver! As Pevonia’s global number-one best-seller, it’s a cult favourite for a reason. Infused with pure Marine Collagen, hyaluronic acid and deeply nourishing Squalane, it wraps dry, depleted skin in a velvety layer of hydration. It immediately plumps the appearance of fine lines, firms the skin structure, and protects against the free radicals that accelerate ageing. “I love this daily face cream....I use it morning and night! My skin looks and feels amazing. I'm 52 and am told constantly that I look so young...” – Linda And if your skin is on the more sensitive side… The investment: Phytomer Expert Youth Wrinkle Plumping Cream Why it’s worth it: If your skin has become increasingly reactive, dry or sensitised with age, this luxurious cream is an absolute standout. It delivers powerful anti-ageing benefits while remaining incredibly comforting and gentle on fragile skin. Formulated with marine biotechnology ingredients and advanced wrinkle-plumping actives, it deeply nourishes, smooths fine lines, restores softness and helps strengthen the skin barrier without irritation. “If you are looking for a beautiful nourishing moisturiser to help with fine lines and wrinkles while being soothing and nourishing for ageing, dry and sensitive skin, then give this a try! I highly recommend!” –  Sally W. The Masks The Investment: Vie Collection Mesoforce Hyaluronic Acid Vitamin Mask Why it’s worth it: For those days when your skin looks genuinely tired, dull, or lacking volume, a standard hydrating mask won't cut it. You need a targeted, clinical-grade treatment that mimics the effects of an in-clinic vitamin injection. This high-performance mask is a total luxury powerhouse. It drenches the skin in a concentrated cocktail of Hyaluronic Acid and potent vitamins to instantly restore volume, deeply hydrate, and deliver a spectacular, lit-from-within glow that makes it look like you’ve just stepped out of a high-end skin clinic. “This product is amazing. My skin feels hydrated, smooth and plump. A little goes a long way, and one tube lasts me almost 6 months with regular use. Can’t be without it!” – Erin Crawford The investment: Pevonia Ageless Skin Collagen Mask Why it’s worth it: This beautiful collagen-rich treatment mask is like an instant pick-me-up for tired, depleted skin. Infused with Marine Collagen, Hyaluronic Acid and deeply hydrating actives, it visibly plumps fine lines, restores softness and leaves skin looking smoother, firmer and more radiant after just one use. The most beautiful mask that leaves my skin feeling so soft and smooth! It smells divine and is gentle enough on my delicate skin. Love the plump effect it leaves my skin looking too!” – Stacey Harrison The Eye Creams  The investment: Vie Collection Chrono Eyes Puffiness Dark Circles Wrinkle Cream Why it’s worth it: The eye area is often the first place ageing starts to show, and this powerhouse eye cream targets every concern at once, we are talking puffiness, dark circles, fine lines and loss of firmness! Using advanced peptides, brightening ingredients and smoothing actives, it instantly refreshes tired eyes while helping to visibly firm and strengthen the delicate eye area over time. “This is a wonderful eye cream, it gives immediate gratification thanks to a pearlescent finish that instantly brightens the eye area and it has definitely calmed my puffiness, lightened by dark circles and even smoothed my wrinkles! It’s truly a fabulous eye cream that is well worth the price tag.” – Lisa M  The investment: Pevonia Age Correction Eye Contour Why it’s worth it: This deeply nourishing eye cream is ideal for mature eyes showing signs of dryness, crepiness and loss of elasticity. Formulated with Collagen, Hyaluronic Acid and smoothing anti-ageing ingredients, it helps soften fine lines, improve hydration and restore a firmer, more youthful-looking eye contour. “This eye cream has never failed me. I was introduced to it from my esthetian and through the years I noticed the difference if I tried other eye creams. So I wouldn't stray to far from this and always ended up purchasing again and again. I barely have signs of aging compared to other women my age. Love this!” – Cassandra O   Remember great skincare over 40 isn’t about chasing every trend or using the harshest products on the market. It’s about investing in high-quality formulas packed with proven ingredients that support your skin as it changes with age. Whether your focus is hydration, firmness, wrinkles, pigmentation or restoring that healthy glow, the right skincare can make a visible difference!

Skincare in Your 50s: What Your Skin Really Needs

by Jo Boyden on May 15 2026
Our 40’s and 50’s is a time when our skin starts to change in ways I’m sure you’ve definitely noticed! Between hormonal shifts and a natural slowdown in collagen production, our skin is going through some major transitions right now! You’ve likely noticed your skin is all of a sudden a lot drier than ever before. Loss of firmness and fine lines are a given (why do our faces suddenly appear to droop?!) skin can definitely appear more dull and lacklustre and then there is the lack of “plumpness” (synonymous with younger skin of course). At BC we are often asked what skin really needs at this stage and the truth is simpler than you might think! While we can’t defy ageing, we can absolutely support our skin to help it look and feel healthier, smoother and more radiant too, you just need the right ingredients, consistency and a more targeted routine for mature skin. Keep reading to find out what your skin really needs, as recommended by the BC Pros.   Firstly, why does skin change so much in your 50s? One of the biggest reasons skin changes in your 50s is hormonal fluctuation, particularly during and after menopause. Oestrogen levels decline significantly, and because oestrogen plays such an important role in keeping skin firm, hydrated and resilient, the changes can become quite noticeable. Skin naturally produces less collagen and elastin, meaning it may start to feel thinner, drier and less bouncy than before. Cell turnover slows so radiance declines and the skin barrier becomes more fragile, often leading to increased sensitivity and dehydration too! Great! This is why skincare in our 50s is less about aggressive treatments and more about supporting the skin properly with hydration, nourishment, barrier repair and ingredients that help restore comfort, firmness and glow.   So what does skin in your 50s actually need? 1. Intense moisture (not just hydration) One of the most common complaints during this decade is dryness. Even people who previously had oily or combination skin often notice their complexion suddenly feeling tight, dehydrated or uncomfortable. This is because a drop in estrogen often leads to a decrease in natural oil production and mature skin retains moisture less efficiently than it once did. It’s essential to look for skincare rich in Hyaluronic Acid, Ceramides, Squalane and nourishing oils and butters as these ingredients help replenish moisture, support the skin barrier and restore softness and comfort.   2. Support for collagen and firmness We lose about 1% of our collagen every single year starting in our 20s! Eek. But that process accelerates significantly during menopause. This leads to a loss of elasticity and sagging and skin that begins looking thinner seemingly overnight! This is where ingredients like Marine Collagen, Peptides, Retinol and Vitamin C are paramount! They can make a real difference by helping support firmness, elasticity and smoother-looking skin over time.   3. Barrier repair and skin comfort Many women notice their skin becomes far more reactive in their 50s. Products that once worked beautifully may suddenly feel irritating or sensitising. This is usually a sign the skin barrier needs support. Rather than over-exfoliating or using harsh actives, focus on products that calm, replenish and strengthen the skin. Again products rich in ceramides should be your go-to.   4. Gentle exfoliation for radiance Cell turnover slows down as we age, which can leave a layer of dead skin cells on the surface. This is why skin can start to look "grey" or dull. Exfoliation is therefore essential, however, mature skin is also thinner, so harsh scrubs are a no-go! Look for gentle exfoliators that smooth and brighten skin without stripping the skin barrier. Enzyme exfoliators are the best!   5. Brightening agents If you’re seeing "age spots" or uneven pigmentation (very common as we start to reach our 50’s), it’s likely the result of sun exposure from years ago finally coming to the surface. This is when Vitamin C will become your best friend! Other natural ingredients like Vitamin B3 (Niacinamide), MADEWHITE™ (Madecassoside), Tranexamic Acid and Arbutin can make a significant difference in fading dark spots too.   6. Targeted Eye Care You’ve hopefully been slapping on the good stuff around your delicate eye area for a few decades now as our eyes are the first place to start really showing signs of ageing so preventative skincare is imperative from as young as our 20’s, but the skin around our eyes often shows the most significant change in our 50s, from hooded lids to deeper "crow’s feet". This is why come your 50’s you need so much more than just a basic eye cream. you’ll want to look for a treatment that offers a "lifting" effect.    7. SPF No matter your age, daily sun protection is essential! In your 50s, it becomes even more important to help protect your skin from further visible signs of ageing, so don’t be complacent, apply that SPF daily (and yes even in winter). The best skincare ingredients for women in their 50’s I’ve already mentioned the ingredients we know are essential for mature skin but here’s a little breakdown of the top 7 so you can see their immediate benefits; Marine Collagen Helps support firmness, softness and elasticity while improving skin comfort and hydration. Retinol (Vitamin A) Boosts collagen, smooths wrinkles, clears pores, and improves skin texture. Hyaluronic Acid One of the best ingredients for mature skin because it helps attract and retain moisture, leaving skin looking plumper and smoother. Vitamin C Brightens dullness, supports collagen production and helps restore radiance to tired-looking skin. Ceramides Essential for strengthening the skin barrier and preventing moisture loss. Peptides Help support firmer, smoother-looking skin by encouraging collagen production.   The skincare routine and products we recommend in your 50s Step 1: Gentle cleansing Avoid harsh cleansers that leave skin feeling tight after washing. Creamy, nourishing cleansers are ideal because they cleanse without disrupting the skin barrier. We highly recommend: Pevonia Power Repair Hydrating Cleanser It’s a global-best seller for Pevonia and for good reason! It’s perfect for all ages, especially older women worried about dryness, dehydration, ageing and sensitivity! It’s gentle, creamy and effectively removes impurities while keeping your skin hydrated, soft and refreshed all at the same time! What’s more its formulated with marine collagen and marine elastin to support skin’s elasticity, suppleness and resilience. Step 2: Vitamin C serum - day A nourishing and brightening serum becomes incredibly important during our 40’s and 50’s! Look for formulas with Vitamin C, Hyaluronic Acid and antioxidants to help replenish moisture and support skin vitality. We highly recommend: Pevonia ‘C’ Complexe with Oxyzomes Just two pumps of this beautiful creamy serum (with the most divine citrus scent) equals radiant looking skin instantly! Oh, and it feels a-mazing too thanks to its combination of vitamin c and hydrating dynamo hyaluronic which quite literally drenches skin with repairing antioxidants. Step 3: Hydrating moisturiser This is where richer creams really shine. Mature skin often needs creams that provide hydration, lipid and anti-ageing support to help strengthen, smooth and comfort the skin. We highly recommend: Phytomer Expert Youth Wrinkle Plumping Cream This luxurious cream is a powerhouse of marine biotechnology, designed to smooth fine lines, plump the skin, and support firmness throughout the day. Formulated with Red Vegetal Coral and Brown Algae, it works beautifully under makeup and helps defend against visible signs of ageing, all while keeping skin supple and radiant. I personally LOVE it! Step 4: Consistent SPF SPF remains non-negotiable. A huge amount of visible ageing comes from cumulative UV exposure, so protecting the skin daily is one of the best investments you can make. We highly recommend: Hubislab Post Rays UV Protect Sun Block SPF50+ PA+++ This amazing multi-tasking sun block provides complete UV and antioxidant protection for ageing or stressed-out skin! Its non-irritating, has an SPF of 50+ and protects the skin against UV radiation, preventing dryness, dullness and signs of premature ageing including hyperpigmentation. Rich in peptides and collagen it keeps skin nourished, healthy and elastic and the invisible matte formula applies smoothly and stays on all day. With zinc oxide as its main ingredient, there is zero irritation, so it is ideal for all skin types including those with extremely sensitive and/or ageing skin. Step 5: Anti-Ageing Serum – night Night-time is when your skin naturally goes into repair and regeneration mode, making it the perfect time to introduce more intensive nourishing and rejuvenating ingredients. Look for serums containing retinol (Vitamin A), peptides and restorative ingredients that help support collagen production, improve texture and soften the appearance of fine lines over time. We highly recommend: Hubislab MineExo Peptide Ampoule This intensive serum harnesses advanced Exosome Technology and a potent peptide complex to deeply hydrate, firm, and rejuvenate stressed or ageing skin. Also packed with antioxidants like retinol, Vitamin C, and E, hyaluronic acid and hydrolysed collagen, it does it all! It boosts collagen, reduces wrinkles, improves elasticity, and strengthens the skin barrier. It really is outstanding! Step 6: Nourishing Night Cream We all know moisturising in the morning is essential, after all a good day cream acts as a protective barrier, locking in hydration, smoothing the skin, helping sunscreen apply more evenly, and even boosting the staying power of your makeup! But often as we age that moisturiser we use in the day, isn’t enough at night. Night creams tend to be richer in texture and packed with higher concentrations of active ingredients to promote renewal without the interruption of external aggressors. In fact, a good night cream will not only sooth and calm skin while you sleep, but also deliver lasting moisture while addressing common skin concerns such as moisture loss and skin ageing! They also help by improving cell turnover and lock in all the goodness of the serum you just applie! Night creams in your 50’s should focus on nourishment, comfort and skin barrier support while helping improve firmness and visible signs of ageing We highly recommend: Phytomer Night Recharge Youth Enhancing Cream Beautifully silky and ultra-comforting, this skin-replenishing formula is enriched with marine extracts that help detoxify, firm, and deeply nourish the skin overnight. It literally cocoons skin while you sleep working to reduce signs of fatigue, improve elasticity and bring back your glow by morning, seriously! It’s formulated with the best in marine ingredients including D-Tox Microalgae (designed to promote the elimination of free radicals, toxins, and pollutants detoxifying the skin while you sleep), and Marine Mannitol (an active ingredient which helps to re-oxygenate tired and "asphyxiated" cells) as well as Laminaria Digitata Extract, Salicornia Herbacea Extract and Jojoba & Sunflower Seed Wax to deeply nourish, revitalise and strengthen the skin! Both my colleagues and I simply love how it makes our skin look and feel when we wake (I’m talking glowy, plumper and just more youthful looking!) The biggest skincare mistake people make in their 50s The biggest skincare mistake so many of us make in our 50’s is trying to treat our skin the same way they treated it in their 30s and 40s. But what worked previously may now feel too harsh, drying or aggressive. Skin in our 50s generally responds much better to consistency, nourishment and barrier support than overly complicated routines packed with strong actives!  Remember more isn’t always better. And with the right care, your skin can still look incredibly luminous, healthy and vibrant for decades to come.
8 ingredients your sensitive skin should avoid

8 ingredients your sensitive skin should avoid

by Jo Boyden on Mar 31 2026
If you have sensitive skin, you already know it can feel like everything is a potential trigger. That new “gentle, nourishing, and dermatologist-tested” product that sounded so ideal for your easily irritated complexion, turned out to be not-so-gentle after all, leaving you with a red, stinging face! The thing is, sensitive skin is often the result of a thinner or compromised skin barrier. This means irritants, allergens, and harsh actives can sneak in far more easily than they would for someone with a more resilient complexion. What makes it even trickier is that the culprits aren’t always obvious. In fact, many of the ingredients most likely to trigger sensitivity are hiding in plain sight! Even in products marketed specifically for "sensitive" skin! That’s why becoming confident at reading ingredient labels is one of the most valuable skincare skills you can have. Knowing what to leave out of your routine is just as important as knowing what to include. And once you understand which ingredients tend to cause trouble, caring for sensitive skin becomes so much easier, we promise! To help you shop smarter and keep your complexion calm, we’ve rounded up the top ingredient’s experts agree sensitive skin should always avoid.   What your sensitive skin really means Sensitive skin isn’t just a “type”, it’s a condition. At its core, it usually comes down to a compromised skin barrier, which means your skin isn’t as strong or resilient as it should be. As a result, it reacts more easily to ingredients, environmental stress, and even changes in routine. This is why products that work beautifully for others can cause redness, stinging, breakouts, or inflammation for you. The goal with sensitive skin isn’t to overload it with actives, it’s to protect, strengthen, and support it!   The 8 ingredients to avoid From strong fragrances to overly drying alcohols, there are a few common ingredients that can make sensitive skin worse without you realising it. 1. Fragrance (synthetic & natural) Fragrance is one of the most common triggers for sensitive skin and one of the easiest to overlook! It’s often listed as “parfum” or “aroma” and can even include essential oils. Why avoid it:Fragrance can cause irritation, redness, and allergic reactions, especially with repeated use. Even natural fragrance isn’t always gentle on reactive skin.   2. Denatured alcohol (Alcohol Denat.) Not all alcohols are bad but denatured alcohol is one your skin could definitely do without! Why avoid it:It strips the skin of its natural oils, weakens the barrier, and can leave your skin feeling tight, dry, and more prone to irritation.   3. Essential Oils While they sound calming and natural, essential oils can be surprisingly reactive for sensitive skin. Why avoid them:Ingredients like citrus oils, peppermint, and eucalyptus can trigger redness and sensitivity, particularly in already compromised skin.   4. Exfoliating acids (overuse of AHAs/BHAs) Exfoliation is important, we know this but with sensitive skin, more is definitely not more! Why be cautious:Over-exfoliating can damage the skin barrier, leading to increased redness, irritation, and sensitivity. Strong acids or frequent use can quickly tip your skin out of balance. To read about exfoliation and sensitive skin and what you should do, click here.   5. Sulphates (SLS & SLES) These are commonly found in cleansers and are responsible for that foamy, “squeaky clean” feeling. Why avoid them:They can be overly stripping, removing essential moisture and leaving the skin barrier vulnerable and irritated, not good when you already have a compromised skin barrier!   6. Strong retinol and retinoids Retinol and retinoids can be outstanding when it comes to ageing but are very powerful! Therefore, they need to be approached very carefully if your skin is sensitive. Why be cautious:They can cause peeling, dryness, and irritation, particularly if introduced too quickly or used in high strengths. For everything you need to know about retinol and sensitive skin click here. And if retinol still scares you, here are some outstanding alternatives for your sensitive skin.   7. High-Concentration Vitamin C (L-Ascorbic Acid) Vitamin C is a glow-boosting favourite, but not all forms are suitable for sensitive skin. Why be cautious:High concentrations can be too stimulating, leading to stinging and redness. Gentler derivatives are often a better option. Look for vitamin C serums formulated with a gentle derivative such as sodium ascorbyl phosphate, magnesium ascorbyl phosphate or Tetrahexyldecyl ascorbate, these vitamin C forms are considered more stable and less irritating. 8. Artificial Colours & Dyes These are often added purely for aesthetic reasons — and your skin doesn’t need them. Why avoid them:They offer no skin benefit and can increase the risk of irritation or allergic reactions.   What skincare ingredients your sensitive skin does need Instead of focusing only on what to avoid, it’s equally important to prioritise ingredients that will support and strengthen your skin barrier. These include; Niacinamide (Vitamin B3) Niacinamide enhances the skin’s natural barrier by increasing the production of ceramides, which are essential for locking in moisture and protecting the skin from environmental stressors. Niacinamide is also known for its anti-inflammatory properties, making it a great choice for those with sensitive, rosacea or acne-prone skin. It helps to calm redness and irritation, leading to a clearer, more even complexion. Ceramides When you suffer from sensitive or easily reactive skin, ceramides can be especially beneficial. They help to protect, repair and strengthen your skins barrier, shielding it from external aggressors such as harsh weather conditions, bacteria and pollutants. This helps reduce skin redness, irritation and sensitivity. Ceramides also help your skin hold onto moisture. They act like little sponges, preventing water loss and keeping your skin hydrated and plump! Hyaluronic acid Hyaluronic acid is a powerful hydrating ingredient that attracts and retains moisture within the skin. For sensitive skin, maintaining hydration is key to keeping the barrier strong and functioning optimally. By drawing water into the skin, it helps to reduce dryness, tightness and discomfort, leaving the complexion feeling soft, smooth and comfortably hydrated without causing irritation. Panthenol (Vitamin B5) Panthenol is a deeply soothing and restorative ingredient that works to calm irritation while supporting the skin’s natural repair process. It helps to strengthen the skin barrier, improve hydration levels, and reduce redness, making it particularly beneficial for compromised or reactive skin. It also leaves the skin feeling soft, supple, and more resilient over time. Calming botanicals (like White Water Lily (Nymphaea Alba), Chamomile, Centella Asiatica, Cucumber & Aloe Vera) Calming botanicals are essential for soothing sensitive skin and reducing visible signs of irritation. Ingredients such as White Water Lily, centella asiatica, chamomile, and aloe vera work to gently calm inflammation, minimise redness, and provide lightweight hydration. They help restore balance to the skin, leaving it feeling comforted, refreshed, and more stable.   All these ingredients help calm irritation, restore hydration, and build resilience over time.   A few of our favourites for sensitive skin: Pevonia Sensitive Skin Cleanser Packed with chamomile and other soothing botanicals, this natural cleanser specifically designed to gently cleanse sensitive skin, is both calming and comforting. Exosomes: Why this anti-ageing breakthrough is trending

by Jo Boyden on Jan 23 2026
If you're serious about skincare, you've probably noticed the word "exosomes" popping up everywhere lately, and likely wondering if they’re just another skincare fad, or something your skin actually needs! Well, unlike more familiar trending ingredients like hyaluronic acid and Vitamin C, exosomes aren’t about quick fixes or surface-level results. They work by supporting communication within the skin at a cellular level, helping to encourage repair, calm inflammation and improve overall skin function. This is exactly why dermatologists and skin professionals are calling them one of the most exciting developments in modern skincare! For anyone focused on skin longevity, especially those with ageing, sensitive, or compromised skin, exosomes are fast becoming an ingredient worth understanding. Interested in learning why they deserve a place in your daily routine? Keep reading.   So, what are exosomes in skincare? Your skin cells are constantly communicating with each other, sending messages about when to repair damage, produce collagen, or fight inflammation. For decades, skincare has tried to influence these conversations from the outside, adding ingredients that stimulate, block, or mimic cellular processes. But what if instead of shouting instructions at your skin, we could actually deliver the messages directly? That's exactly what exosomes do. These microscopic messengers, naturally produced by cells, carry growth factors, peptides, and genetic material that help skin cells “talk” to each other. Applied topically, they supercharge regeneration, boost collagen production, and accelerate recovery. In skincare, exosomes are bioengineered or plant-derived versions designed to support similar processes within the skin. Rather than simply treating surface concerns, they work on a deeper level by encouraging the skin’s own renewal and recovery pathways. Clever stuff!   Where do exosomes in skincare come from? Exosomes used in skincare are extracted from various biological sources, then purified and stabilized for use in formulations. The most common in skincare are; Plant-Derived Exosomes These come from plant stem cell cultures. Plants like roses, ginseng, rice, or marine algae are cultured in controlled laboratory environments. As these plant cells grow, they naturally produce and release exosomes, which are then harvested and purified for skincare use. Why plants you might be wondering? Well plant exosomes are rich in antioxidants, protective compounds, and regenerative signals that translate well to skin benefits. They're also more stable, sustainable, and easier to produce at scale than animal-derived alternatives. Marine Exosomes Derived from marine organisms such as algae, plankton, or other ocean-based sources, marine exosomes have gained particular attention for their resilience and protective properties. What makes marine exosomes special? Marine organisms survive in some of the harshest conditions on earth, extreme temperatures, high oxidative stress, and intense UV exposure. The exosomes they produce contain resilience-building compounds that help protect and repair skin facing similar environmental stressors. Marine exosomes are particularly effective for anti-aging and environmental protection, which is why leading brands like Phytomer are incorporating them into advanced serums.   What do exosomes actually do for your skin? Here's where exosomes differentiate themselves from traditional active ingredients. They don’t just stimulate, they communicate! Whereas traditional skincare ingredients work by either adding something your skin needs (like hyaluronic acid for hydration), blocking something harmful (like SPF blocking UV) or stimulating a response (like retinol telling cells to turn over faster) exosomes work differently. They deliver actual cellular messages (growth factors, proteins, and RNA) that instruct your skin cells on what to do at a fundamental level (so clever!) It's the difference between giving someone a tool and giving them the blueprint and instructions for how to use it!   The key benefits of exosomes Collagen production Exosomes deliver growth factors that signal fibroblasts (collagen-producing cells) to increase production. Unlike ingredients that just "stimulate" collagen, exosomes provide the specific molecular instructions for production meaning visibly firmer, more lifted-looking skin! Inflammation reduction They modify inflammatory responses at the cellular level, making them particularly effective for reactive, sensitive, or rosacea-prone skin. This isn't just calming, t's actually changing how your skin responds to triggers. Cellular repair Exosomes contain proteins and genetic material that accelerate wound healing and tissue repair. This makes them powerful for addressing sun damage, scarring, and compromised barriers. Antioxidant Defence They boost your skin's own antioxidant systems rather than just adding external antioxidants. This creates longer-lasting protection against environmental damage. Pigmentation Early research shows exosomes can help regulate melanin production and reduce hyperpigmentation by influencing the communication between melanocytes and keratinocytes.   Are exosomes suitable for sensitive or compromised skin? One question we get asked a lot and one of the most exciting aspects of exosomes is their compatibility with sensitive and compromised skin! Because their focus is on calming, repairing, and strengthening rather than overstimulating, they are often well tolerated by skin that struggles with redness, irritation, or post-treatment sensitivity. This has made them increasingly popular in routines designed to restore the skin barrier, reduce inflammation, and support recovery after professional skin treatments.   Exosomes vs classic actives like retinol and vitamin C Retinol, vitamin C, niacinamide, and hyaluronic acid work brilliantly, but they mainly act from the outside in. Exosomes complement these by improving the underlying communication and repair environment within the skin. Think of your classic actives as the tools, and exosomes as the project manager coordinating how and when those tools are used! Many advanced formulas now combine exosomes with peptides or antioxidants to tackle multiple skincare concerns including collagen loss, oxidative stress, and inflammation, all in a single step.  Cue the exosome skincare we are obsessed with!   Phytomer Oligoperformance Protective Antioxidant Serum with Marine Exozomes This really is a sophisticated daily treatment designed to defend the skin against oxidative stress while preserving a youthful, resilient complexion! At the heart of the formula are marine exosomes, which help stimulate the skin’s natural antioxidant systems and protect essential structures like collagen and elastin from environmental damage. This makes it particularly beneficial for skin exposed to pollution, UV stress, and modern-day aggressors that accelerate ageing. What sets this serum apart though is its ability to work on multiple levels at once. By supporting antioxidant defence, boosting collagen activity, and helping regulate melanin production, it visibly improves firmness, radiance, and overall skin density while gradually reducing the appearance of dark spots. The lightweight micro-emulsion texture melts seamlessly into the skin, making it ideal for daily use across all skin types, especially those beginning to notice early signs of ageing, dullness, or loss of firmness. Over time, the skin appears brighter, smoother, and more resilient (a clear example of how exosomes support long-term skin longevity rather than quick skincare fixes!) Hubislab MineExo Peptide Ampoule For skin that needs a more intensive regenerative approach, Hubislab MineExo Peptide Ampoule takes exosome technology even further. This high-performance ampoule is designed for ageing, stressed, or fatigued skin, particularly when elasticity, hydration, and firmness are compromised. Using advanced exosome technology, the formula enhances intercellular communication, allowing powerful active ingredients to penetrate more effectively and work deeper within the skin. The inclusion of Lactobacillus ferment derived exosomes, along with a potent blend of peptides and growth-supporting ingredients, helps stimulate collagen production, strengthen the skin barrier, and improve elasticity. At the same time, a carefully balanced vitamin complex including retinol, vitamin C, and vitamin E, brightens the complexion, protects against free radical damage, and helps reduce pigmentation. The result is skin that feels deeply nourished and hydrated, while looking visibly smoother, plumper, and more refined! Because of its advanced actives, this ampoule is especially great for those undergoing professional treatments or looking to actively address wrinkles, loss of elasticity, and visible signs of environmental stress. With consistent use, the skin appears stronger, more luminous, and noticeably revitalised! So, if you have ageing skin, sun damaged skin, sensitive or reactive skin, are a frequent to professional treatments (think peels, lasers and microneedling) or you simply after prevention focused skincare, exosome skincare is for you! Most exosome serums can be used twice daily (morning and evening) however some of us prefer once daily (evening) if combining with other active ingredients! The great news is exosomes skincare works well with hyaluronic acid, niacinamide, ceramides, antioxidants and of course your essential SPF!
Retinol vs Bakuchiol: Which is best for your skin?

Retinol vs Bakuchiol: Which is best for your skin?

by Jo Boyden on Dec 05 2025
We’ve all heard about retinol, the go-to ingredient when it comes to anti-ageing skincare, but lately bakuchiol has been stealing the spotlight as retinol’s natural alternative! An ingredient that delivers similar results but without any irritation. If you haven’t tried either, you might be wondering which is the better option for your skin, that’s why we are here to help! Keep reading for your guide to understanding both, plus the easy 3 step routines to help you get glowing, youthful skin with whichever ingredient you choose.   So what is retinol and what can retinol do for your skin? Retinol is the OG when it comes to anti-ageing! It's a vitamin A derivative that speeds up cell turnover, smooths fine lines, boosts collagen, unclogs pores, and evens tone like nothing else! Sounds amazing right? It really is! but with one downside. Unfortunately, retinol is strong and can irritate skin, causing redness or peeling at first. This does not mean you should never give it a try though! You just need to be sure to start slow, use at night, and always pair with SPF during the day!   Your 3-step retinol routine 1. Cleanser: Pevonia Micro Retinol Essential Foaming CleanserThis gentle, yet powerful foaming cleanser preps skin with a dose of retinol to remove impurities without stripping. Formulated with Hyaluronic Acid and Vitamin C it hydrates and brightens skin too! It's perfect for evening out texture right from the cleanse. 2. Serum: Pevonia Micro Retinol Essential SerumThis potent yet lightweight anti-ageing serum delivers targeted Micro-Retinol, hyarlouronic acid and vitamin c deep into the skin to boost collagen, accelerate cell turnover, refine pores and firm, and brighten skin! Pat it on after cleansing for deep, overnight renewal. 3. Moisturiser: Pevonia Micro Retinol MoisturiserSeal your serum in with this rich yet non-greasy cream formulated with Micro Retinol, hyaluronic acid, vitamin C and marine collagen to deeply hydrate skin while amplifying retinol's benefits. You’re wake up to plumper, glowier skin! And over time you’ll see a significant decrease in appearance of fine lines and wrinkles too! Want all 3 products at a more affordable price? Why not indulge in the Pevonia Micro Retinol Skin Refining Gift Box which comes complete with the cleanser and matching toner, both for FREE, so all you need to pay for is the serum and moisturiser! Yes!   Bakuchiol, retinol’s gentler alternative Derived from the Psoralea corylifolia (Babchi) plant, bakuchio has been gaining serious attention for its ability to mimic the effects of retinol, without the irritation! Like with retinol, bakuchiol boosts collagen production to effectively reduce line lines and wrinkles, it also fights hyperpigmentation for a more even skin tone and provides antioxidant protection supporting a healthy skin barrier. What makes it great for sensitive skin types though is it’s gentle and non-irritating! Unlike retinol, bakuchiol doesn’t increase sun sensitivity, meaning you can use it morning and night without worrying about extra SPF protection (though SPF is always a must in the mornings of course!). It really is the ideal solution for sensitive skin or anyone looking for a gentler alternative.   Your 3-step bakuchiol routine 1. Cleanser: Naturys Anti-Age Cleansing Gel Oil This silk-like gel-oil cleanser melts away makeup, sunscreen and impurities while nourishing the skin. Infused with bakuchiol and peptides, it gently refines skin and perfectly preps for the next steps.  It really is ideal for sensitive complexions! 2. Moisturiser: Naturys Anti-Age No Age Fluid Cream Lightweight yet deeply hydrating, this cream delivers bakuchiol, peptiedes and hyaluronic acid deep into the skin for a smoother, firmer, more luminous complexion. 3. Eye Cream: Naturys Anti-Age Well Ageing Eye Contour Cream A gentle but effective eye treatment that revitalises fine lines, dullness, and early signs of ageing around the eyes without any irritation or stinging. It’s the perfect eye cream for delicate skin. Retinol or Bakuchiol - which should you choose? You really can’t go wrong with either! It’s less about which one is “better” and more about which one fits your skin’s needs. If you’re someone who wants visible results quickly and your skin can handle a bit of intensity, retinol is a brilliant choice. It’s tried, tested and proven to work. Prefer something soothing, natural, pregnancy-friendly and gentle enough for everyday use? Bakuchiol is a fantastic alternative. You’ll still see improvements in firmness, smoothness and radiance, just without the risk of irritation. A lot of people even use both! Bakuchiol in the morning for antioxidant support, and retinol at night for rejuvenation. It’s a great way to balance results and tolerance!

The best collagen boosting skincare ingredients

The best collagen boosting skincare ingredients

by Jo Boyden on Sep 25 2025
If you’ve ever looked in the mirror and wished your skin felt firmer, smoother, or just a little more youthful, you would certainly not be alone! Unfortunately, collagen (the protein we all know that keeps our skin plump and bouncy) naturally declines with age, stress, and lifestyle, leading to fine lines, loss of elasticity and dullness! The good news? With the right skincare ingredients, you can help support and actually boost your collagen levels, no needles required! Keep reading as we countdown the top performing ingredients that will help stimulate collagen in your skin restoring your complexion with a plumped, youthful glow!   So, what are the top collagen boosting ingredients? The best collagen ingredients to look for in your skincare are those that either directly contain collagen or, more importantly, stimulate your skin's natural collagen production. The top scientifically supported ingredients include:   Retinol The gold standard for renewal Retinol (a form of vitamin A) is a powerhouse when it comes to collagen. It works by speeding up cell turnover and stimulating fibroblasts, the cells that produce collagen and elastin. The result? Smoother, firmer skin and fewer visible fine lines. Remember retinol can be strong, so always introduce it gradually, use it at night, and pair with SPF by day! Vitamin C The brightening collagen booster Vitamin C is one of the most researched and google searched! Ingredients in skincare, and for very good reason. Not only does it brighten and even out skin tone, but it also plays a vital role in collagen synthesis (in fact it’s essential for stabilizing and synthesizing new collagen.) It is also the only antioxidant proven to protect against free radicals while stimulating collagen synthesis, helping to minimise fine lines and improve skin texture. Genius. Peptides The skin’s messengers Peptides are short chains of amino acids that act like tiny messengers, telling your skin to ramp up collagen production. They help strengthen the skin barrier, improve elasticity, and soften the look of wrinkles. The best part? Peptides are usually gentle, making them great for all skin types. AHAs and BHAs The glow getter Hydroxy acids really are another skincare superstar. Not only do they help your skin look fresher and glowier by exfoliating away dead cells, but they also support collagen production, which means firmer, smoother skin over time. Some experts even believe that by clearing out old collagen, your skin gets a chance to build fresh, new collagen in its place. Niacinamide The real multi-tasker Niacinamide, also known as vitamin B3, has been shown to boost collagen production within the dermal matrix. On top of that, it acts as a powerful antioxidant, helps reduce hyperpigmentation and redness, and strengthens the skin’s barrier function! By minimizing transepidermal water loss (TEWL) (the culprit behind dryness and cracking) it keeps skin healthier, hydrated, and more resilient. Growth Factors (EGF’s) The coaches for your skin Growth factors are powerful proteins that play a pivotal role in skin rejuvenation by directly stimulating collagen and elastin production. When applied (through your skincare) they bind to receptors on skin cells, initiating cellular renewal and repair processes. Amazing right? This results in enhanced collagen synthesis, which helps diminish fine lines, improve elasticity, and restore youthful suppleness! Additionally, growth factors support healthy cell turnover and skin healing, making them excellent for boosting skin texture and overall radiance while reducing the impact of environmental stressors and inflammation.  Hyaluronic Acid The plumping hydrator While hyaluronic acid doesn’t directly create collagen, it works hand-in-hand with it. This moisture magnet holds up to 1,000 times its weight in water, keeping skin hydrated, plump, and more resilient and well-hydrated skin is better at supporting collagen synthesis, meaning your complexion stays smoother and bouncier for longer!   For maximum anti-ageing and skin firming benefits, you’ll want to choose products that combine several of these collagen boosting ingredients, rather than relying on just one. A typical routine might include vitamin C in the morning and retinol at night, with peptides and niacinamide for added support. Just remember to look for products with high-quality, stabilized versions of these ingredients, and introduce them gradually to avoid irritation, especially retinol and vitamin C   These are the best collagen boosting skincare products on BC While direct collagen application has its multiple benefits, the real magic happens when you stimulate your skin's own collagen production! How to make your pores look smaller in 7 simple steps

How to make your pores look smaller in 7 simple steps

by Jo Boyden on Jul 04 2025
Pores. We all have them, after all they are crucial for healthy functioning skin! But for some of us, they can appear a little more prominent than we’d like! In fact, enlarged pores are a very common skincare concern, and while you can’t eliminate them (they’re essential after all!) the great news is you can definitely make them look a whole lot smaller! Want to know how? Keep reading for the best routine to minimise your pores and achieve a smoother, flawless complexion too!   Firstly, why do your pores look larger than you’d like? If your pores are looking larger than usual, there are several common reasons behind it. 1. Excess Sebum (oil) production This is one of the most common reasons for enlarged pores. Each pore contains a sebaceous gland that produces oil (sebum) to keep your skin moisturised. When your skin produces too much oil, it can mix with dead skin cells and other debris, clogging the pore. This buildup stretches the pore walls, making the opening appear larger. This is particularly common in people with oily or combination skin. 2. Genetics Unfortunately, your genes play a significant role in pore size! If your parents or close relatives have naturally larger pores, you're more likely to have them too. This is simply due to inherited skin structure and oil gland activity (thanks family!) 3. Ageing! As we age our skin loses collagen and elastin, the proteins that provide firmness and support. When the skin around the pores loses its elasticity, it can sag and stretch, making the pores appear wider and more open. 4. Sun damage UV rays break down collagen and elastin, similar to the natural ageing process. This damage weakens the skin's support structure, leading to less firm skin and consequently, larger-looking pores. Sun exposure can also thicken the skin, which can make pores more visible. 5. Clogged pores Congested pores look a while lot more noticeable that pores that aren’t! This is because a mix of dead skin cells, excess oil, makeup, and dirt can get trapped inside the pore. This accumulation creates a plug (a blackhead if exposed to air and oxidised, or a whitehead if closed off), stretching the pore opening and making it appear enlarged. 6. Improper skincare Skipping exfoliation or not cleansing properly can lead to buildup and visible pores.   The 7 steps to minimising your pores   1. Double cleanse daily Our pores often appear larger when clogged with oil, sweat, dirt, and makeup so effective cleansing really is the first essential step to minimising their appearance. Double cleansing helps remove every trace of grime, without stripping your skin. It also prevents a build-up, which can stretch pore walls. Simply start with an oil-based cleanser (we LOVE the ELES Transformation Cleansing Oil) to melt away makeup and sunscreen, then follow with a gentle water-based cleanser like Phytomer’s Souffle Marin Cleansing Foaming Cream to detoxify, decongest and purify your pores. Formulated with marine botanicals like OLIGOMER® and marine spring water, it helps soothe, remineralise, and maintain skin balance while gently but effectively removing any trace of remaining makeup, excess oil and impurities. “This is an excellent cleanser for my skin that is normal to oily in the warmer summer months. It has a mild exfoliant in it, lactic acid, that helps keep my pores purified. I am very happy with it.” – Brianna (BC customer) And for the month of July, when you purchase the best-selling Phytomer Expert Youth Wrinkle Plumping Cream (one of my personal favourites) you’ll receive this powerhouse cleanser for FREE) Top tip: Make sure you avoid harsh cleansers that strip your skin, they can actually increase oil production and worsen the look of pores.   2. Exfoliate (but don’t overdo it!) I’m sure we all know regular exfoliation will help keep our skin’s surface smooth and clear but did you ever consider that by not adding this simple step into your skincare routine once or twice weekly, dead skin cells can settle into your pores making them look larger and uneven! So, if you are dealing with enlarged pores and aren’t exfoliating as you should be, start now! If your skin tends to naturally be on the more combination or oily side opt for chemical exfoliants formulated with glycolic acid (AHA), salicylic acid (BHA), or lactic acid (AHA) to keep pores clear. If your skin is more on the sensitive side, you’ll want to choose a good enzyme exfoliator (like papaya or pineapple-based formulas) as these are a more gentle, non-invasive option. The enzymes literally dissolve the dead skin, so no harsh exfoliation in sight! Just be sure to not over exfoliate as you can risk irritation and inflaming your pores! 1-3 times a week is sufficient dependant on how sensitive your skin is. For more on exfoliation, the different types and the best option for your skin click here.  3. Use a Pore-Refining Toner or Essence Toners or essences with ingredients like niacinamide, witch hazel, or zinc help refine texture, tighten the appearance of pores and balance oil production. We love Phytomer Oligomarine Flawless-Skin Tonic, formulated with niacinamide, witch hazel and zinc, it tones the skin, tightens the pores and brightens the complexion! 4. Apply a clay mask weekly Clay masks, especially those with kaolin or bentonite, are brilliant for drawing out excess oil and impurities from pores, leaving them looking tighter and less visible. Apply a clay mask once or twice a week for a deep-cleaning boost like Phytomer Citylife Radiance Reviving Mask with Clay. Combining 100% natural red and white clays, blue microalgae, red algae and a comprehensive depolluting complex of 3 marine sugars, it reveals luminosity, radiance and refined pores after just one application. 5. Target with a serum Serums are concentrated treatments designed to go deeper into the skin, making them ideal for refining texture and targeting pore visibility. When it comes to minimising, pores look for serums formulated with retinol, niacinamide and peptides. These ingredients not only boost cell turnover and support collagen production but help unclog pores, smooth uneven skin tone and ensure skin looks firmer and tighter! Try Vie Collection’s Vita B3 Concentrated solution, packed with niacinamide to visibly tighten pores, smooth texture, and brighten overall tone. What’s more when you purchase a selected Vie Collection Moisturiser this July, you’ll receive the Vita B3 serum for FREE!  6. Make sure you moisturise daily, even if your skin is oily! Dehydrated skin overcompensates with more oil, which can stretch and clog pores. The right moisturiser can help balance and smooth skin. If enlarged pores are a problem make sure you opt for lightweight, non-comedogenic moisturisers formulated with hyaluronic acid, glycerin, or squalane and specifically designed to help pores. Remember well-hydrated skin helps maintain elasticity and prevents pores from appearing larger. 7. Protect with SPF (Every. Single. Day.) We all know sun damage breaks down collagen and elastin, but did you know that this in turns causes our pores to sag and look larger over time! Wearing an SPF daily really will help maintain your skin’s firmness and youthfulness. Just be sure to look for non-comedogenic formulas and mineral sunscreens with zinc oxide or titanium dioxide if you have sensitive or acne-prone skin! And use it every morning even on cloudy days, to protect your skin and keep pores looking refined!   Additional expert tips As well as following a daily skincare routine, there are a few additional things you need to ensure you do/don’t do as well! 1. Avoid squeezing or picking at your pores as this can cause irritation and even scaring! 2. Use a pore perfecting primer before applying makeup. A good primer will become your lifeline if you are prone to enlarged pores. Not only will it stop your foundation from sliding off your face quite literally, it’ll keep your base smooth while reducing the appearance of pores (and fine lines!) 3. Avoid using heavy, pore-clogging makeup, try mineral makeup instead!   A consistent routine can dramatically refine your pores appearance over time. By keeping them clean, exfoliated, hydrated, and protected, your skin will look smoother, more even, and radiant we promise!
Exosomes explained: How they’re revolutionizing skincare

Exosomes explained: How they’re revolutionizing skincare

by Jo Boyden on Jun 06 2025
You’ve probably heard the buzz around powerhouse ingredients like niacinamide, retinol, peptides, and even tranexamic acid, essentials for healthy, rejuvenated skin. But there’s a new star making waves in the world of advanced aesthetics: exosomes. These tiny, cell-derived bubbles are packed with proteins, lipids, and growth factors, and they’re rapidly gaining attention for their ability to transform skin health and take your skincare routine to the next level! So, how do exosomes actually work? and what can they do for your complexion? Keep reading as we break down everything you need to know about exosomes, the future-forward ingredient set to revolutionize skin rejuvenation, boost collagen, and deliver radiant, youthful results!   What are exosomes and how do they work? Think of exosomes as the ultimate messengers between cells. They deliver powerful ingredients right where they’re needed, helping to calm inflammation, boost fibroblast activity, and regulate collagen production. The result? Skin that repairs and rejuvenates itself from the inside out. Unlike some treatments that only work on the surface, exosomes get deeper, helping to create real, visible changes in skin texture and tone.   Why are exosomes the next big thing in skincare? The excitement around exosomes isn't just hype, it's rooted in their unique ability to communicate and stimulate without being actual cells themselves. Exosomes are outstanding in skincare because they; Are powerful messengers Unlike applying a single growth factor, exosomes deliver a whole symphony of beneficial signals (hundreds of growth factors, peptides, amino acids, and genetic material) in one tiny package. This holistic communication is what makes them so effective. Ensure targeted delivery Because they're naturally occurring "mail packets," exosomes are incredibly efficient at delivering their active components directly to the cells that need them most, promoting more effective regeneration and repair. Stimulate natural processes Instead of just adding ingredients, exosomes are believed to encourage your skin cells to behave more youthfully. They prompt your skin to produce its own collagen, elastin, and hyaluronic acid – the building blocks of firm, plump, and healthy skin. Are anti-inflammatory & healing: Exosomes have potent anti-inflammatory properties, which can be incredibly beneficial for calming irritated skin, reducing redness, and aiding in the healing process. This makes them promising for conditions like rosacea or post-procedure recovery. What can exosomes do for your skin? (The benefits!) Incorporating exosomes into your skincare routine provides your skin with a multitude of outstanding benefits! These include; Significant anti-ageing By boosting collagen and elastin production, exosomes can lead to visibly firmer, plumper skin, reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Enhanced skin regeneration They accelerate the skin's natural repair mechanisms, leading to faster healing and improved overall skin health. Improved skin tone & texture Expect a more even skin tone, reduced redness, and a smoother, more refined texture as cells regenerate more efficiently. Increased hydration By stimulating the production of hyaluronic acid, exosomes can dramatically improve your skin's ability to retain moisture, leading to a dewy, supple complexion. Reduced Inflammation Their calming properties make them excellent for soothing sensitive or compromised skin, reducing redness and irritation. Antioxidant protection Packed with antioxidant enzymes, exosomes protect skin cells from oxidative stress caused by pollution, UV rays, and other environmental aggressors, helping to prevent premature ageing Faster post-procedure recovery Exosomes are increasingly used to help skin heal faster and more effectively after treatments like microneedling, lasers, or chemical peels, minimising downtime.   How are exosomes used in skincare? Exosomes are often featured in high-performance products, and post-treatment skincare to accelerate recovery and healing and amplify results. They are highly purified, ethically sourced, and carefully formulated for topical use making them incredibly safe to use. In fact, because they’re derived from stem cells, they work harmoniously with your body’s natural processes meaning minimal risk and maximum reward! And when used regularly in your skincare routine, exosome-based products can deliver dramatic, long-term improvements in skin health and radiance. INTRODUCING Hubislab MineExo Peptide Ampoule, the serum dermatologists are aclling a ‘Skin Miracle’.  Korean skincare brand Hubislab have taken skincare to the next level with the MineExo Peptide Ampoule. Featuring cutting edge exosome technology, powerful peptides and multi-layer hydration, this serum has the ability to transform your skin! Unlike conventional serums, this ampoule uses microscopic extracellular vesicles (exosomes) from pink flowers to activate intercellular communication, stimulating collagen synthesis and dramatically improving skin firmness and elasticity. Its advanced formula combines powerhouse ingredients like Copper Tripeptide-1, Acetyl Hexapeptide-8, hyaluronic acid, hydrolyzed collagen, and a potent vitamin complex (retinol, ascorbic acid, tocopherol) to target multiple signs of ageing, reducing wrinkles, boosting hydration, improving firmness, brightening skin, and protecting the skin barrier, speeding up healing!  The result is plumper, firmer, and more radiant skin, making it ideal for stressed or ageing complexions and a must-have for anyone seeking next-level results. by Jo Boyden on May 16 2025
Unfortunately, acne isn’t just a teenage problem like many of us may have once thought! It can be frustrating reality for adults too. Whether it's caused by hormones, stress, diet, or environmental factors, adult acne can be stubborn and challenging to treat. But if you’re currently dealing with this skin condition and looking for solutions that work, we are here to tell you they do exist! Whether you're dealing with persistent pimples, hormonal flare-ups, or the occasional breakout, keep reading for the most effective, tried-and-tested treatments for clear, calm skin!   Understanding adult acne – why you’re prone to it Before we discuss the best treatments, it's crucial to understand the reasons for adult acne. These are the main contributors; Hormonal Fluctuations Like in your teens, hormonal fluctuations are a major culprit when it comes to acne in adulthood! Especially in women due to menstrual cycles, pregnancy, perimenopause, and hormonal imbalances. Hormones can cause havoc with our skin by increasing oil production, clogging pores, and triggering inflammation leading to breakouts, especially around the jawline and chin. Stress Unfortunately, our busy lives can lead to increased stress levels. Stress in turn triggers hormonal changes, particularly cortisol spikes, which increase oil production, inflammation, and breakouts making adult acne more frequent and stubborn. Skincare Habits Using the wrong products, over-exfoliating, or not cleansing properly can contribute to breakouts. Diet While not a direct cause for everyone, certain foods can exacerbate acne in some people. High-glycaemic foods such as dairy, and processed items can spike insulin, triggering excess oil and breakouts. Environmental pollution Dirt and toxins on our skin from pollution can further contribute to the problem. It clogs pores causing inflammation and breakouts. Antioxidant-rich foods like berries, leafy greens, and nuts help defend skin.   What type of acne do you suffer from? Acne comes in many forms! To find out all about the most common ones and which you might be struggling with click here.   Key ingredients that work to fight acne Certain powerhouse ingredients have been clinically proven to combat acne, these include; Salicylic Acid This oil-soluble beta-hydroxy acid (BHA) can penetrate pores to exfoliate inside and out, helping to unclog them and reduce inflammation preventing further breakouts. Be consistent and patient: Just remember clear skin isn’t an overnight achievement. Stick with a consistent, gentle routine and give your skin the time it needs to heal. Listen to your skin: Pay attention to how your skin reacts to different products and adjust your routine accordingly. Avoid product-hopping though and always patch-test new treatments first. Manage stress: Since stress aggravates acne, practices like meditation, exercise, and better sleep can make a difference. Maintain a healthy diet and stay hydrated: Cutting back on sugar and dairy may help some people minimize breakouts. Staying hydrated flushes toxins and supports skin health. Manage hygiene: Regularly washing pillowcases, makeup brushes, and phones prevents bacteria buildup on your skin.   Looking for makeup tips for your acne prone skin? Click here.

Keep reading to learn all there is to know about serums, why they’re essential, and which ingredients and serums to look for, for healthy, glowing skin.    Firstly, exactly what Is a serum? A serum is a lightweight, fast-absorbing skincare product formulated with a high concentration of active ingredients that deliver real results. Unlike moisturisers, which are designed to hydrate and protect the skin’s barrier, serums, thanks to their smaller molecular size, are able to penetrate the skin more deeply, treating concerns at a cellular level, essential for achieving visible results. Why are serums so important? Adding a serum to your routine can make a significant difference in how your skin looks and feels! They play a crucial role in enhancing your skincare routine because of their efficacy and versatility. Serums are not only designed to target a multitude of skin concerns but to also deliver visible results and quickly! They are also different to oils in that they are easy to layer with other skincare products and can improve your overall skin texture, tone and radiance! Star ingredients to look for in serums When it comes to your serums, it’s important to look at what ingredients they have been formulated with! Here are some of the most powerful actives to look out for when deciding on the right serums for you! Hyaluronic Acid Hyaluronic acid a hydration hero when it comes to skincare! (You’ll need to note though that products with retinol need to be introduced slowly and surely.) Niacinamide (Vitamin B3) Niacinamide is a real multi-tasker! Similar to retinol it offers a multitude of benefits! It helps minimise pores, improve uneven tone, reduce redness and dark spots and strengthens the skin barrier! Peptides These short chains of amino acids help stimulate collagen production, improve skin firmness, reduce fine lines, and support overall skin repair and elasticity! Dull, devitalised skin? These are BC’s top-rated beauty buys

Dull, devitalised skin? These are BC’s top-rated beauty buys

by Jo Boyden on May 02 2025
Found yourself looking in the mirror lately and wondering why your skin is suddenly looking dull and old? Well, you most certainly wouldn’t be alone! We all deal with the occasional bout of dull skin but if you’re regularly waking up to a tired, lacklustre complexion, you’ll likely be wondering what you can do to improve it! Unfortunately, the looming winter months will only exacerbate this skin concern thanks to the cooler weather and constant need for indoor heating which, let’s face it, sucks the life out of our already depleted complexion! But this doesn’t mean we can’t take action and turn our dull, devitalised skin to radically radiant in next to no time! Chances are your skincare routine could just be missing a few key components! Keep reading as we countdown the must-have ingredients and products recommendations that will breathe life back into your dull skin, products I personally swear by and come highly recommended by our customers and the BC experts too!   Why is your skin dull and tired looking? Dull, tired-looking skin can be caused by a variety of factors, many of which are linked to your lifestyle, environment, and skincare habits. The most common causes include; 1. Lack of exfoliation Dead skin cells can build up on the surface, making your complexion look flat and lacklustre. Regular exfoliation (chemical or physical) helps reveal fresher, brighter skin underneath. 2. Dehydration When your skin lacks moisture, it can appear sallow, tight, and lifeless. Hydrating ingredients in your skincare like hyaluronic acid and glycerin can help plump and revive your complexion. 3. Poor sleep Not getting enough quality sleep can interfere with your skin’s repair cycle, leading to puffiness, dullness, and a lack of radiance, I can vouch for that! 4. Stress Chronic stress triggers cortisol production, which can negatively affect circulation, cause breakouts, and make skin look fatigued. 5. Environmental damage Pollution, UV rays, and harsh weather strip the skin of its vitality, speed up ageing, and contribute to a dull appearance. 6. Nutrient deficiency Lacking essential vitamins and antioxidants in your diet (like vitamin C, E, or omega fatty acids) can unfortunately impact skin tone, texture, and glow. 7. Using the wrong products Using the wrong products (or skipping key steps like cleansing, exfoliation, or SPF) can leave your skin dull, congested, or unbalanced, this is why the products you use and the steps you take are imperative when it comes to healthy, glowing skin!   The ingredients you need if your skin is lacking life, you’ll want to choose skincare with hydrating and skin brightening benefits. Look for products formulated with Vitamin C, hyaluronic acid and/or retinol as these superlative ingredients will help skin appear more hydrated, plumped and radiant! The best-selling products we highly recommend THE CLEANSER: Phytomer Cyfolia Radiance Cleansing Cream When you have dull skin cleansing should be the first step in your skin care routine. Goodbye dull, devitalized skin! “I am in love with this product, it’s become my go-to moisturiser! It’s silky and light yet keeps my skin moisturised all day long! It has a lovely subtle scent, and the products name definitely reflects the results – it’s energising and radiance inducing that’s for sure!” – JoJo B THE SERUM: Pevonia “C” Complexe with Oxyzomes Another tip for reviving dull skin? Adding a vitamin C serum to your daily routine! It can totally transform your skin I’m telling you! We love Pevonia’s “C” Complexe. Vitamin C, hyaluronic and oxygen work together in this amazing product to enliven dull skin leaving it visibly brighter and more youthful after every single application! It’s a truly powerful anti-oxidant that not only delivers immediate luminosity but protects the skin from premature skin ageing too! Yesss! Oh and if smells and feels amazing too! “This is a beautiful serum. You only require two pumps and the coverage is excellent. Radiant looking skin instantaneously. Definitely worth the investment.” – Deborah  THE EXFOLIATOR: Pevonia Gentle Exfoliating Cleanser The most common cause of dull, lacklustre skin is a build-up of dead skin cells on the skin’s surface. This happens when we neglect to slough them away. So if your skin is looking dull and lacklustre, chances are you need to up the ante and exfoliate properly! No matter what your skin type, exfoliation is paramount when it comes to removing those skin dulling dead cells! They need to be removed in order to allow new, glowing cells to come forward. Look for an exfoliator that will help brighten your complexion as well as smooth your skin. Pevonia’s Gentle Exfoliating Cleanser is not only ideal for all skin types, it’s a creamy, granular, exfoliating cream formulated with jojoba beads, Saponaria and Chamomile that very gently polishes away dul, dead skin cells, impurities and toxins to reveal instant radiance and softer, smoother skin too! You’ll love the immediate gratification you’ll get from this formidable favourite of ours. Use 1-2 times weekly. “I love this exfoliator, my skin always feels so smooth and hydrated after using it. It also makes my skin look a lot brighter.” – Orielly R THE FACIAL MASK: Vie Collection Photo C Bright Radiance Mask Treat yourself to an at-home spa day with a facial mask. It will help draw out any build-up of impurities, dirt and pollution, reduce the appearance of dull skin and increase the look of luminosity! It is power packed with vitamin c, exfoliating papain, marine minerals and more and we promise after the very first application an incredibly radiant and brightened skin appearance will be revealed! “Love this mask, I use it once a week and what a difference it makes! I leave it one for about 20 minutes and when I rinse it off my skin is literally glowing! Highly recommend.” – Sarah M THE NIGHT CREAM: Pevonia Micro Retinol Essential Moisturizer This light and gentle moisturiser increases cell turnover, stimulates collagen and elastin production (essential for youthful, plump skin), fades hyperpigmentation and helps skin stay hydrated and glowing without irritation. It’s a multi-tasking wonder! You should introduce it slowly though and at night. This is because Retinol makes your skin more sensitive to UV rays and sunlight decreases the efficacy of the product. Changes in my skin are an increased smoothing of lines and crepe-skin areas, softening, hydrating and contouring, and reduced pigmentation. It’s a surprise to see a brighter smoother complexion at my age. (60)” – Annie THE FACIAL OIL: Pevonia De-Stress Escape Aromatic Oil To complete your skincare routine introducing a facial oil specifically designed to brighten dull skin is key! The scent is also heavenly and definitely transports me into a relaxed state of mind. Such amazing stuff!” – Amy K
The best retinol alternatives for sensitive skin

The best retinol alternatives for sensitive skin

by Jo Boyden on Apr 16 2025
Retinol is often hailed as the holy grail of anti-ageing skincare, known for its powerful ability to boost collagen, smooth wrinkles, even out skin tone and more! But for those with sensitive skin, the idea of applying retinol, especially when you’ve heard how it can cause irritation, seems nothing short of silly, after all, why would you want to exacerbate your already delicate complexion right?  While I’m personally an advocate for retinol (and I have fairly dehydrated and sensitive skin myself), I am here to tell you there are some amazing retinol alternatives that offer similar smoothing, brightening and collagen boosting results, without the irritation! From the best ingredients to expert approved products, keep reading to find out what will work for your sensitive skin.   1. Bakuchiol – the “natural retinol alternative” Derived from the Psoralea corylifolia (Babchi) plant, this powerhouse ingredient has been gaining serious attention for its ability to mimic the effects of retinol, without the irritation! We love the Vegan friendly Naturys Anti-age No Age Fluid Cream! As well as bakuchiol it’s enriched with peptides and hyaluronic acid which work together to provide skin with intense hydration while soothing, toning and plumping!  2. Niacinamide – The skin-smoothing superstar Also known as vitamin B3, niacinamide, like retinol, is a skincare multitasker! It helps even out skin tone, brighten the complexion, minimise pores, reduce redness, and support the skin’s barrier! And the best part? It’s one of the most well-tolerated skincare ingredients out there, making it ideal for anyone dealing with breakouts, rosacea, sensitive, dry or reactive skin really! Niacinamide is also a great team player, meaning you can pair it with other gentle actives like hyaluronic acid, ceramides, or peptides to boost your results without irritation. Vie Collection Serum De Vie – High Performance Youth Concentrate is a fantastic way to incorporate niacinamide into your routine. This multi-tasking and richly hydrating serum works at a cellular level to protect skin cells and restore a more youthful appearance. An EGF-like peptide enhances cell division to smooth wrinkles, while niacinamide slows the transfer of melanin to key parts of your skin to fade the look of dark spots. 3. Tranexamic Acid: The skin soothing and smoothing solution Another fantastic alternative to retinol, especially for those with sensitive skin or concerns like hyperpigmentation and redness, this powerhouse ingredient is gentle yet highly effective! While it doesn’t offer the same collagen-boosting benefits as retinol and a few of the other ingredients, its excellent in other ways that make it a strong contender for those seeking gentle yet effective skincare results. It works by reducing melanin production, helping to fade dark spots, sun damage, and melasma. Its anti-inflammatory properties also calm redness and irritation, making it ideal for rosacea or reactive skin types. Unlike retinol, it won’t cause peeling or sensitivity, making it a safe, daily-use option. So if you’re looking to brighten and even your complexion without irritation, tranexamic acid is a go-to choice! Try Hubislab Derma Max Brightening Clinic. This deeply moisturising night cream formulated with tranexamic acid, antioxidants and vitamins, nourishes the skin whilst soothing irritation, improving elasticity, correcting pigmentation and brightening the complexion all whilst you sleep! 4. Madecassoside (Centella Asiatica/Cica Extract): The skin regenerator Madecassoside, also derived from Centella Asiatica, helps repair and regenerate the skin. It possesses strong anti-inflammatory properties that help control excessive sebum and soothe and calm irritated skin, making it effective in treating conditions like eczema and psoriasis. Madecassoside also aids in collagen production, promoting skin firmness and elasticity. Its antioxidant properties help protect the skin from environmental damage and premature ageing. This ingredient supports wound healing by stimulating cell regeneration and improving circulation. Overall, Madecassoside is valued in skincare for its ability to enhance skin barrier function, reduce redness, and restore a healthier, more radiant complexion. We highly recommend: Hubislab Premium Active Eternal Face & Eye Cream. Packed with a plethora of goodies from madecassoside and Hyaluronic Acid to peptides and a Botulinum-derived component (an ingredient that is similar to Botox) This 2-in-1 – moisturiser and eye cream is nourishing but perfectly light and promises to improve wrinkles and skin texture while strengthening skin and providing face-lifting effects! We are also obsessed with the entire new Phytomer Cica collection! 5. Peptides: The Gentle Firming Agents Peptides are short chains of amino acids that help rebuild collagen and improve skin elasticity, making them a great anti-ageing alternative to retinol. Unlike retinol, peptides don’t cause dryness, redness, or peeling, making them ideal for delicate complexions. They also help improve skin barrier function, reduce inflammation, and smooth fine lines and wrinkles over time. Plus, peptides are versatile and can be safely combined with other skincare ingredients, making them a gentle yet powerful option for achieving firmer, healthier-looking skin. There are so many peptides rich products we could recommend but one of our collective firm favourites when it comes to sensitive skin is Hubislab Premium Active Revival Essence. This beautiful silky soft bio serum is not only rich in peptides, but it’s formulated with hydrolysed collagen, asiaticoside and madecassoside too! Calming and soothing it delivers deep, long-lasting moisture and softer, smoother, younger looking skin! If you’re simply too scared to try retinol, or if you’ve given it a red hot go but found it too harsh, these alternatives can deliver real results without the redness and peeling! And if you aren’t totally averse to giving retinol a go but want to find a solution for your sensitive skin, we can’t recommend more highly the Pevonia Micro Retinol Line. It’s encapsulated and buffered with peptides and botanicals, making it a tolerable retinol option for sensitive skin types, you just need to transition slowly. Fine lines, wrinkles and dark spots? Here’s how retinol can help

Fine lines, wrinkles and dark spots? Here’s how retinol can help

by Jo Boyden on Mar 21 2025
If you’re starting to notice fine lines and wrinkles forming on your face, or perhaps you’re more concerned about dark spots that just won’t fade? It might be time to introduce retinol into your skincare routine! This powerhouse ingredient that every beauty expert swears by, has earned its reputation for smoothing, brightening and rejuvenating skin like no other! But what makes retinol so effective and how can you use it and get the best results when it comes to your ageing skin? We’ve got the answers!   What is retinol and why is it more superior to other anti-ageing ingredients? Retinol is a powerhouse form of vitamin A and is one of the most researched and dermatologist approved ingredients for skin renewal! It works by accelerating cell turnover, stimulating collagen production, and regulating melanin to improve skin texture, firmness, and tone! This holy-grail ingredient penetrates deep into the skin, promoting faster regeneration and shedding of old, damaged cells and it’s this process that reduces fine lines, wrinkles and evens out skin tone (we are talking radically diminishing dark spots, redness and uneven pigmentation! Amazing right?) So, your skin will appear smoother and more youthful over time. But what makes retinol superior to other anti-ageing ingredients is its scientifically proven ability to target these multiple signs of ageing simultaneously. While ingredients like hyaluronic acid hydrate and peptides support collagen, retinol actively repairs and renews skin at a cellular level. Unlike antioxidants that primarily protect, retinol corrects visible ageing by boosting collagen and elastin, preventing future damage while reversing existing signs. Retinol also has the ability to enhance the effectiveness of other skincare ingredients, improving overall skin health. Genius!   How does retinol reduce fine lines and wrinkles? Retinol reduces fine lines and wrinkles by boosting cell turnover, stimulating collagen production, and improving skin texture. As we age, skin renewal slows down, leading to dullness and deeper lines. Retinol speeds up this process, helping to shed dead skin cells and reveal fresher, smoother skin. It also stimulates collagen and elastin production, which plumps the skin and improves firmness, reducing the appearance of wrinkles. Additionally, retinol refines skin texture by unclogging pores and evening out tone, making fine lines less noticeable. With consistent use, it helps maintain a youthful, radiant complexion while preventing new wrinkles from forming.     How does retinol reduce dark spots and uneven skin tone? Sun damage, acne scars, and hormonal changes can leave behind dark spots that linger for months (or even years) on your skin. The great news is retinol actually fades discolouration by accelerating cell turnover and inhibiting excess melanin production. It helps skin shed damaged, pigmented cells more quickly, revealing brighter, fresher skin underneath. Retinol also stimulates collagen production, which improves skin texture and smooths discolouration. By regulating melanin distribution, it fades hyperpigmentation, sun damage, and post-acne marks over time. Retinol also enhances the skin’s ability to absorb other brightening ingredients, making treatments like vitamin C even more effective. With consistent use, retinol creates a more even, radiant complexion, reducing the appearance of dark spots and promoting a healthy, youthful glow. When paired with sunscreen (a must!), it helps prevent new spots from forming too by regulating melanin production! Phew.   The best retinol products to help reduce fine lines and wrinkles and fade dark spots With so many retinol products on the market, it can be hard to know which to trust, that’s where we, the BC professionals can help! We highly recommend Pevonia’s Micro-Retinol® range. Every product in the range which includes Micro-Retinol® Foaming Cleanser, Micro-Retinol® Essential Toner, Micro-Retinol® Serum and Micro-Retinol® Essential Moisturiser utilizes a specialized technology to create Retinol micro-particles that get delivered deep into the epidermis. This means complete product absorption, no skin irritation, and immediate results! It’s a great, safe, and side-effect free alternative to using prescription Retinoic Acid. What’s more, every product in the Micro-Retinol® line contains a powerhouse trio of vitamin C, Vitamin E, and Micro-Retinol®! The addition of Vitamins C and E not only ensures Micro-Retinol®’s stability, but also that the skin’s nutrients and density are renewed and preserved! What’s more for the month of March 2025, when you purchase The Micro-Retinol® Essential Moisturiser, you’ll receive the matching Micro Retinol Cleanser and Lotion 50ml for FREE!   How to use retinol for maximum results and without irritation! If you haven’t tried retinol before, but this blog has convinced you, you should (you won’t look back I’m telling you!) you need to know how to introduce it into your skincare routine for the best results and without irritation! Because retinol is so potent it requires careful use, including moisturising and SPF! Here’s how to incorporate it into your routine: Start by introducing it slowly. Use it 2-3 times a week maximum at first, then increase as your skin adjusts (Remember a little goes a long way, and using too much too soon can lead to irritation). Start with a low concentration (0.25% – 0.5%) and work your way up. If you have sensitive skin, opt for micro-encapsulated or lower-strength retinol. Apply at night! Retinol makes your skin more sensitive to the sun so it’s best not to apply in the morning. Use a pea-sized amount to cover your face. Always follow with a moisturiser to keep skin hydrated and prevent dryness which retinol can sometimes cause. Retinol can be paired with other ingredients like Hyaluronic acid and Niacinamide. In fact, Hyaluronic acid and retinol are actually a dream team when it comes to skincare. While retinol addresses signs of ageing, hyaluronic acid provides a burst of essential hydration. The combination of both ingredients ensures skin remains moisturised, plump, and balanced. Never skip SPF during the day! Because retinol can make your skin sensitive to sunlight it’s essential to use SPF every single morning!   Believe me when I say retinol is a game-changer when it comes to fine lines, wrinkles, and dark spots. It’s the no.1 skincare essential besides SPF of course when it comes to preventative ageing. With regular use, it can dramatically improve your skin’s texture, tone, and overall youthfulness. The key is patience though, results don’t happen overnight, but give it anywhere from 3-6 weeks, and you’ll start to see smoother, brighter, and healthier-looking skin. Trust us, the wait is worth it!
Beyond retinol: The skincare line you need to fight ageing

Beyond retinol: The skincare line you need to fight ageing

by Jo Boyden on Feb 21 2025
We’ve talked about retinol, its many anti-ageing benefits, the best retinol tips for sensitive skin, why you should use retinol, and the ingredients it’s best paired with, but when it comes to the best retinol products it can be hard to know where to start, or which retinol products you can trust because not all retinol products are created equal and using a retinol serum or cream that is too potent for your skin can, unfortunately, do more damage than good. We are talking dryness, redness, peeling and increased sensitivity!  Well, what if I was to tell you there is a retinol line that is far superior to other lines on the market, a line that is ideal for all skin types and offers a unique approach that maximizes the benefits of retinol while minimizing potential drawbacks? Introducing Pevonia’s Micro Retinol line!   The science behind Micro-Retinol Traditional retinol products often face challenges with stability and absorption because the retinol molecules can be large and unstable, making them harder to penetrate the skin deeply and more likely to cause surface irritation. Pevonia’s Micro Retinol line, however, addresses these issues through its exclusive Micro-Retinol technology, which involves micronizing (breaking down) retinol molecules into smaller, more refined micro-particles. This process enhances the stability of retinol (ensuring the retinol remains effective over time) and ensures optimal delivery into the skin, allowing for deeper penetration and more effective results without skin irritation! Amazing right?    The Pevonia Micro Retinol line Every Micro Retinol product contains a powerhouse trio of vitamin C, vitamin E, and Micro-Retinol® The addition of vitamins C and E not only ensures Micro-Retinol®’s stability, but also that the skin’s nutrients and density are renewed and preserved. What’s more Pevonia’s Micro Retinol products contain all-natural retinol sourced from green leafy vegetables! There are 4 products in the line that work synergistically for optimal results and provide a complete anti-ageing skincare routine! These include: Micro-Retinol Essential Foaming Cleanser This gentle, yet powerhouse sulfate-free cleanser combines Micro-Retinol with Hyaluronic Acid and Vitamin C to cleanse, exfoliate, and hydrate the skin, leaving it bright and refreshed. Micro-Retinol Essential Toner An alcohol-free toner enriched with Micro-Retinol actives, Aloe, Chamomile, Green Tea, Vitamins C and E, and Hyaluronic Acid. It balances, soothes and prepares the skin for the serum and moisturiser! Micro-Retinol Essential Serum This potent anti-ageing serum that delivers concentrated Micro-Retinol, hyaluronic acid, and vitamin C deep into the skin to boost collagen production and accelerate cell turnover, resulting in smoother, more youthful-looking skin. Micro-Retinol Essential Moisturiser This powerhouse moisturiser formulated with Micro Retinol, hyaluronic acid, vitamin C and marine collagen, deeply hydrates, smooths, brightens and firms the skin, enhancing the effects of the serum and providing a protective barrier against environmental stressors. Skin looks smoother, brighter and more youthful with refined fine lines and wrinkles. And for the months of March and April 2025, when you purchase the Micro Retinol Essential Moisturiser you will receive the accompanying Micro Retinol Cleanser and Lotion 50m for FREE!   So why choose Pevonia's Micro-Retinol line? If you’re looking for a retinol product that delivers powerful results without irritation, Pevonia’s Micro-Retinol Line is an excellent choice! Unlike traditional retinol formulas, Pevonia uses advanced micro-emulsification technology to refine retinol into smaller molecules, allowing deeper penetration and enhanced stability. This means you get maximum anti-ageing benefits like improved collagen production, smoother texture, and reduced fine lines, without the harsh side effects. Genius! Plus, the line is enriched with hydrating and soothing ingredients like hyaluronic acid, aloe, and antioxidants to nourish and protect your skin. If you want a highly effective yet gentle retinol routine, Pevonia’s Micro-Retinol Line is a standout! But don’t just take our word for it. Our customers love the Pevonia Micro Retinol line too!   “I have been using this line for 18 months and I now have compliments all the time from strangers about my “amazing skin”. I use the cleanser/toner/serum/moisturiser and would recommend to anyone looking to improve skin texture!” – Alice P “I have only started using the Micro Retinol Moisturiser recently and could already see the improvements in my skin, feels smooth and radiant.” – Jay “The Micro Retinol Moisturiser is the most beautiful cream I have ever used; light texture, non greasy, non shiny. Changes in my skin are an increased smoothing of lines and crepe-skin areas, softening, hydrating and contouring and reduced pigmentation. Some results were instantly visible and now after three weeks my skin just keeps improving. I am 60 and have tried this after other brands became ineffective. Now my skin appears luminous and more refined. It’s a surprise to see a brighter, smoother complexion at my age.” - Annie “I've been using other Pevonia products for about a year now but decided to try the Micro Retinol Serum to bump things up a bit. I saw almost instant results! Coarse lines, especially around my mouth have quite literally disappeared. Same thing for smile lines and crow’s feet. My 60 year old skin feels as smooth, soft, and healthy as when I was....well, I can't even remember when my skin was this glowing. I am anxiously waiting for my order of Micro Retinol Moisturizer to arrive now. This product delivers great results and is totally worth the price.” – Julie M “I’ve been using this line (micro retinol) for years! I have purchased and tried more expensive products that come on the market but always come back to this line of Pevonia bc it just simply works best! Also bc it’s Pevonia, it always smells glorious!” – Brooke K “I love this retinol serum! I have been using it for a while now and find it smooths out fine lines and adds an overall healthy glow to my skin. Love it!” – Veronica   Essential tips on how to introduce retinol into your routine Introduce the product slowly – apply it only at night, one or two times a week for the first week and gradually increase application. Retinols are best applied at night, particularly because it makes your skin more photosensitive. Ensure you wear sunscreen during the day when using retinol (you should be wearing sunscreen everyday whatever the reason though!) Allow the product to fully absorb into the skin (this could take up to 30 minutes) before layering any other products. Just make sure to use any acne-fighting products (i.e. anything that includes benzoyl peroxides or salicylic acid) on the nights you don’t use your retinol product. Give the product time to work its magic. This could take a few months but the results WILL be worth it. We promise! Prepare for the inevitable adjustment period your skin will go through before you see the results you want. Because retinol causes the skin to shed cells faster than normal, you’ll likely experience a few weeks of change to your skin including some flakiness and dryness. Retinol is NOT recommended for women who are pregnant or breastfeeding. By addressing common retinol challenges through advanced technology and offering a comprehensive routine, Pevonia provides a superior solution for those seeking to rejuvenate their skin.

Retinol and sensitive skin: Everything you need to know

If you’re wanting to try retinol since you’d heard it’s the anti-ageing powerhouse, but you’re worried about it exacerbating your sensitive skin, you are not alone. While this ingredient is renowned for its age defying and skin renewing abilities (and for very good reason!) it can also be too strong for those prone to redness, irritation or even dryness. But does this mean you should avoid retinol altogether? Definitely not! With the right approach, even sensitive skin types can reap the benefits of this skincare superstar! The key to retinol and your skin is choosing the right product – not every retinol product is created equal! You also need to know what to pair retinol with when it comes to your skincare routine to keep your skin happy! Whether you’re looking to fight fine lines, improve your skin’s texture, fade dark spots, or all of the above! Keep reading for everything you need to know about retinol and the best tips for sensitive skin.   What is retinol? Retinol is one of the most powerful proven ingredients in skincare, the “holy grail” when it comes to anti-ageing or so the beauty experts say! Retinol is actually a form of Vitamin A that works by speeding up cell turnover, essentially encouraging our skin to shed old, damaged cells and replace them with fresh healthy ones!   What makes retinol so effective? Retinol is a true multi-tasker! It has been proven to smooth fine lines, fade dark spots and improve skin texture. Its key benefits include; Retinol stimulates collagen production keeping skin firm and youthful. It unclogs pores, reducing breakouts, making it effective for acne-prone skin.   Retinol is a champion in tackling hyperpigmentation. It can lighten dark spots, sun spots, and even out skin tone by inhibiting the production of melanin, the pigment responsible for discolouration. It works deep within the skin to enhance radiance and even out tone.  Sounds amazing right? The catch? Retinol can be a little too powerful for some, especially those with sensitive or reactive skin.   Why does retinol irritate sensitive skin? Retinol’s fast-paced cell renewal can cause temporary dryness, redness, and flaking, a process often called the “retinol purge.” As it penetrates the skin, retinol stimulates collagen production and exfoliation, but for those with a weaker skin barrier, this process can be too harsh, causing irritation and inflammation. Retinol also reduces oil production, which can lead to dehydration, making sensitive skin feel even more fragile. But don’t worry! With the right formula and technique, you can build up your skin’s tolerance while still enjoying all of retinol’s anti-ageing and skin-smoothing benefits!   How to use retinol if you have sensitive skin 1. Choose the right retinol strength Not all retinol products are created equal. If you have sensitive skin, start with: Encapsulated retinol as it slowly releases into the skin, reducing irritation. Low-strength retinol gentle enough to introduce gradually. 2. Start slow because less really is more Think of retinol like a workout for your skin, you don’t start with heavy weights on day one! Apply a pea-sized amount just 1-2 times a week at first. If your skin tolerates it slowly increase frequency. 3. Apply retinol at night Unfortunately, when it comes to retinol, exposure to sunlight can significantly degrade its effectiveness making it less potent, this is because UV rays break down the retinol molecule rendering it less able to work on your skin. More importantly retinol makes the skin more sensitive to sunlight increasing the risk of redness, irritation and sun damage. As previously mentioned, retinol works by accelerating cell turnover, which means fresh new skin cells are more exposed and vulnerable to UV rays. Therefore, it's best to apply retinol at night! By doing so the ingredient can go to work undisturbed, maximizing its benefits and promoting skin repair while you sleep! 3. Always use a moisturiser Hydration is key to reducing irritation. If it’s just a retinol cream you are using, apply it to your skin at night and use a nourishing moisturiser rich in hyaluronic acid in the morning. If it’s a just retinol serum you’re looking to apply, make sure you use a good moisturiser both morning and night. By applying a thin layer of moisturiser before and after your retinol serum will help buffer its potency while still delivering results. 4. Never skip SPF! Retinol makes your skin more sensitive to the sun, so daily broad-spectrum SPF 30+ is non-negotiable. Without it, you risk undoing all the benefits by exposing fresh skin to UV damage. 5. Watch for signs of overuse If you notice excessive peeling, stinging, or irritation, take a break and focus on repairing your skin barrier with ceramides, niacinamide, and hydrating serums.   How long does retinol take to work? Results from retinol skincare can vary. Some people may notice improvements in a few weeks, days even, while others might take a couple of months. Generally, it takes at least 12 weeks to see significant changes in terms of reduced fine lines, improved texture, and diminished dark spots. Consistency is key, and it's crucial to be patient as the benefits of retinol often accumulate over time. Once you see results you will never look back!   What ingredients can you pair with retinol without irritation? To minimise irritation while using retinol, pair it with hydrating and soothing ingredients that strengthen the skin barrier. Some great options include: Hyaluronic Acid – Deeply hydrates and prevents drynessNiacinamide – Calms redness, reduces sensitivity, and strengthens the skin barrierCeramides – Restore moisture and reinforce skin’s protective barrierPeptides – Support collagen production and repair the skinSqualane – Provides lightweight hydration without clogging poresCentella Asiatica (Cica) – Soothes inflammation and promotes healingAloe Vera – Hydrates and reduces irritation Avoid pairing retinol with strong exfoliants (AHAs, BHAs) to prevent excessive irritation.   The best retinol products for sensitive skin We highly recommend Pevonia’s Micro-Retinol® range. 12 steps to minimise large pores: Your ultimate guide

12 steps to minimise large pores: Your ultimate guide

by Jo Boyden on Dec 06 2024
If you’re one of the many blessed with oily skin, you might find your struggling with large pores too, especially as the weather is heating up and oil production can go into overdrive! That said, large pores are one of the most common (and searched) skin concerns affecting people of all ages and skin types (not just oily skin). They can make your skin appear uneven, textured, or oily, leaving many of us wondering what exactly is causing them and how we can reduce their size stat! Keep reading as we reveal the reasons behind your large pores and, more importantly, how you can minimize their appearance with targeted products and expert tips too!   So, why do you have large pores? Believe it or not there are actually many reasons your pores might be a lot larger than you’d like! Excess oil production Pores are essential for releasing oil (sebum) to keep your skin moisturised. However, overactive sebaceous glands can cause pores to stretch, making them appear larger. Oily skin types are particularly prone to this issue. Clogged pores When oil mixes with dirt, makeup, and dead skin cells, it can clog pores, causing them to expand. This can lead to blackheads and a bumpy skin texture Loss of collagen and elastin As you age, your skin loses collagen and elastin, which are responsible for keeping it firm and tight. With less support, pores may appear more prominent. Sun damage Prolonged exposure to UV rays breaks down collagen and thickens the skin, stretching out pores over time. Genetics Yes you can thank your parents for those unruly large pores of yours! Your skin type and pore size are largely determined by your genetics. If your family has visible pores, chances are you will too. Improper skincare routine Using the wrong skincare products or skipping essential steps like cleansing can exacerbate the appearance of enlarged pores.   How to minimize large pores While you can’t actually change your pore size completely (thanks to genetics), you can take steps to minimize their appearance and achieve a smoother, healthier-looking complexion; 1. Cleanse thoroughly Keeping your pores clean really is the first step to minimising their appearance. This means using a gentle cleanser specific to your skin type both morning and night to effectively remove oil, dirt, sunscreen and makeup. If your skin is combination to oily, it’s best to opt for gel or foaming cleaners, if your skin tends to be on the sensitive side, there are some amazing sensitive skin cream cleansers for that too! Specific ingredients will make a big difference to the appearance of your pore size too. Cleansers formulated with AHA’s (Alpha Hydroxy Acids) such as Citric Acid, Glycolic Acid and Lactic Acid, and/or BHA’s (Beta Hydroxy Acids) such as Salicylic acid can make all the difference! While all four acids exfoliate on a cellular level, Glycolic, Citric and Lactic works on a more surface level to brighten and smooth your skin, whereas Salicylic Acid penetrates much deeper to effectively remove dead skin cells clogged in pores. We highly recommend Vie Collection Cleansing Gel with Glycolic, Lactic and Salicylic Acids. This foaming cleansing gel combines glycolic, lactic and salicylic acids to stimulate cellular activity, break the intercellular glue between dead cells and thoroughly cleanse skin. Remember harsh cleansers can strip your skin of its natural oils, causing your pores to become larger so do consider which cleaner is right for your skin!   2. Exfoliate Regularly When it comes to large pores, exfoliation is paramount! You want to ensure pores are unclogged to prevent further stretching, and exfoliating effectively removes dead skin cells and prevents pore-clogging buildup. Try Pure Balance Papaya Enzyme Peeling Wash. This plant enzyme-based deep cleanser formulated with natural papaya extract dissolves easily in cold water and eliminates dead skin cells without irritation, breaking down proteins to produce peptone, which washes away dirt and sebum within the pores without irritation. Tip: Exfoliate 1–3 times per week based on your skin type.   3. Incorporate retinol into your routine Believe me when I say retinol is a game-changer for pore refinement. A good retinol serum will boost cell turnover and collagen production, which tightens the skin around pores. Just remember though if you haven’t used retinol before you’ll want to introduce it slowly and at night to avoid any irritation. For more information on retinol click here.   4. Use Clay Masks Who doesn’t love a good mask and clay masks are no exception. In fact clay masks will absorb excess oil and draw out impurities from pores when applied. For a real deep clean use your clay mask once or twice a week. And look for masks that specifically have kaolin or bentonite clay. We love Phytomer CityLife Radiance Reviving Mask  This unique cream-mousse mask instantly counters dehydration, signs of fatigue, dark spots and enlarged pores. Combining 100% natural red and white clays, blue microalgae, red algae and a comprehensive depolluting complex of 3 marine sugars, it reveals luminosity, radiance and refined pores after just one application!   5. Hydrate Wisely Dehydrated skin can overcompensate by producing more oil, in turn worsening the appearance of your pores! Be sure to use lightweight, non-comedogenic moisturisers rich in hyaluronic acid, not heavy, greasy creams that could potentially clog your pores. We love: Hubislab Moisture Max Hydro Cream. It’s a powerful, fast-acting moisturiser that quickly locks in hydration while soothing skin. Formulated with a unique blend of hyaluronic compounds that work to form a protective moisture barrier, its lightweight texture provides a primer-like finish without any greasiness! 6. Protect Your Skin with Sunscreen UV damage breaks down collagen and makes pores look larger so you need to be armed with a good broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher and apply every single morning. Try to minimise sun exposure too and always wear a hat!   7. Use pore-minimizing products As well as your hydrating moisturiser and retinol serum, we recommend you invest in products specifically designed to refine pores too like Pevonia’s Age Correction Micro-Pores Refine Cream. it’s a mattifying treatment cream that minimizes pores by combining cutting-edge natural actives like red clover extract and retinol to regulate oil production and refine skin texture. This lightweight cream also hydrates while delivering antioxidants, leaving your skin smoother, balanced, and visibly clearer with regular use. 8. Avoid squeezing or picking pimples from clogged pores It’s tempting to squeeze clogged pores, but this can damage the skin and make pores appear larger. Use proper skincare tools or visit a professional for extractions.   9. Use a primer before applying makeup A good primer will become your lifeline if you are prone to enlarged pores. Not only will it stop your foundation from sliding off your face quite literally, it’ll keep your base smooth while reducing the appearance of pores (and fine lines!) if you are a sufferer of oily skin and pores on the, let’s say slightly larger side! Our recommended go-to is the ELES Pore Perfecting Face Primer. It’s oil-free (of course), perfectly lightweight and seems to combat shine almost instantly. It contains a natural Dermat Complex which enables it to absorb oil and effectively reduce pore size in one hit.   10. Choose your makeup wisely Unfortunately, our makeup can make pores seem bigger than they actually are. Products like our powders and foundation can settle into our pores over the course of the day, making them appear larger, so your best bet because, let’s face it we aren’t going to want to forego our miraculous makeup, is opt for mineral products! A huge benefit of using mineral makeup is that it’s non-comedogenic, meaning it won’t clog your pores! We love ELES Cosmetics range of mineral formulations. Try the best-selling Liquid Powder Mineral Foundation or if you’re a lover of powder foundations we highly recommend the Mineral Powder Foundation.   11. Give professional treatments a go if you are really concerned about your pore size, professional in-salon treatments can deliver dramatic results. Treatments such as chemical peels exfoliate intensively and deeply to unclog and refine pores. Microneedling boosts collagen production for firmer, smoother skin. And laser therapy reduces oil production and tightens skin.   12. Be Consistent Achieving smoother skin takes time. Stick to a routine and give products time to work, remember consistency is key to long-term improvement!   While you can’t change your pore size, you can control how they look by keeping them clean, unclogged, and supported with the right skincare routine. With a mix of at-home care and professional treatments, your pores can go from prominent to practically invisible.
