Retinol is often hailed as the holy grail of anti-ageing skincare, known for its powerful ability to boost collagen, smooth wrinkles, even out skin tone and more! But for those with sensitive skin, the idea of applying retinol, especially when you’ve heard how it can cause irritation, seems nothing short of silly, after all, why would you want to exacerbate your already delicate complexion right? While I’m personally an advocate for retinol (and I have fairly dehydrated and sensitive skin myself), I am here to tell you there are some amazing retinol alternatives that offer similar smoothing, brightening and collagen boosting results, without the irritation!
From the best ingredients to expert approved products, keep reading to find out what will work for your sensitive skin.
1. Bakuchiol – the “natural retinol alternative”
Derived from the Psoralea corylifolia (Babchi) plant, this powerhouse ingredient has been gaining serious attention for its ability to mimic the effects of retinol, without the irritation!
Like with retinol, bakuchiol boosts collagen production to effectively reduce line lines and wrinkles, it also fights hyperpigmentation for a more even skin tone and provides antioxidant protection supporting a healthy skin barrier. What makes it great for sensitive skin types though is it’s gentle and non-irritating! Unlike retinol, bakuchiol doesn’t increase sun sensitivity, meaning you can use it morning and night without worrying about extra SPF protection (though SPF is always a must in the mornings of course!).
We love the Vegan friendly Naturys Anti-Age No Age Rich Cream! As well as bakuchiol it’s enriched with peptides and hyaluronic acid which work together to provide skin with intense hydration while soothing, toning and plumping!
2. Niacinamide – The skin-smoothing superstar
Also known as vitamin B3, niacinamide, like retinol, is a skincare multitasker! It helps even out skin tone, brighten the complexion, minimise pores, reduce redness, and support the skin’s barrier! And the best part? It’s one of the most well-tolerated skincare ingredients out there, making it ideal for anyone dealing with breakouts, rosacea, sensitive, dry or reactive skin really!
Niacinamide is also a great team player, meaning you can pair it with other gentle actives like hyaluronic acid, ceramides, or peptides to boost your results without irritation.
Vie Collection Serum De Vie – High Performance Youth Concentrate is a fantastic way to incorporate niacinamide into your routine. This multi-tasking and richly hydrating serum works at a cellular level to protect skin cells and restore a more youthful appearance. An EGF-like peptide enhances cell division to smooth wrinkles, while niacinamide slows the transfer of melanin to key parts of your skin to fade the look of dark spots.

3. Tranexamic Acid: The skin soothing and smoothing solution
Another fantastic alternative to retinol, especially for those with sensitive skin or concerns like hyperpigmentation and redness, this powerhouse ingredient is gentle yet highly effective! While it doesn’t offer the same collagen-boosting benefits as retinol and a few of the other ingredients, its excellent in other ways that make it a strong contender for those seeking gentle yet effective skincare results. It works by reducing melanin production, helping to fade dark spots, sun damage, and melasma. Its anti-inflammatory properties also calm redness and irritation, making it ideal for rosacea or reactive skin types. Unlike retinol, it won’t cause peeling or sensitivity, making it a safe, daily-use option. So if you’re looking to brighten and even your complexion without irritation, tranexamic acid is a go-to choice!
Try Hubislab Derma Max Brightening Clinic. This deeply moisturising night cream formulated with tranexamic acid, antioxidants and vitamins, nourishes the skin whilst soothing irritation, improving elasticity, correcting pigmentation and brightening the complexion all whilst you sleep!
4. Madecassoside (Centella Asiatica/Cica Extract): The skin regenerator
Madecassoside, also derived from Centella Asiatica, helps repair and regenerate the skin. It possesses strong anti-inflammatory properties that help control excessive sebum and soothe and calm irritated skin, making it effective in treating conditions like eczema and psoriasis. Madecassoside also aids in collagen production, promoting skin firmness and elasticity. Its antioxidant properties help protect the skin from environmental damage and premature ageing. This ingredient supports wound healing by stimulating cell regeneration and improving circulation. Overall, Madecassoside is valued in skincare for its ability to enhance skin barrier function, reduce redness, and restore a healthier, more radiant complexion.
We highly recommend: Hubislab Premium Active Eternal Face & Eye Cream. Packed with a plethora of goodies from madecassoside and Hyaluronic Acid to peptides and a Botulinum-derived component (an ingredient that is similar to Botox) This 2-in-1 – moisturiser and eye cream is nourishing but perfectly light and promises to improve wrinkles and skin texture while strengthening skin and providing face-lifting effects!
We are also obsessed with the entire new Phytomer Cica collection!
5. Peptides: The Gentle Firming Agents
Peptides are short chains of amino acids that help rebuild collagen and improve skin elasticity, making them a great anti-ageing alternative to retinol. Unlike retinol, peptides don’t cause dryness, redness, or peeling, making them ideal for delicate complexions. They also help improve skin barrier function, reduce inflammation, and smooth fine lines and wrinkles over time. Plus, peptides are versatile and can be safely combined with other skincare ingredients, making them a gentle yet powerful option for achieving firmer, healthier-looking skin.
There are so many peptides rich products we could recommend but one of our collective firm favourites when it comes to sensitive skin is Hubislab Premium Active Revival Essence. This beautiful silky soft bio serum is not only rich in peptides, but it’s formulated with hydrolysed collagen, asiaticoside and madecassoside too! Calming and soothing it delivers deep, long-lasting moisture and softer, smoother, younger looking skin!
If you’re simply too scared to try retinol, or if you’ve given it a red hot go but found it too harsh, these alternatives can deliver real results without the redness and peeling! And if you aren’t totally averse to giving retinol a go but want to find a solution for your sensitive skin, we can’t recommend more highly the Pevonia Micro Retinol Line.
