How to reduce under eye wrinkles: 9 proven tips

If you’re in your 40s like me, it’s likely you’ve started to notice fine lines and wrinkles showing up under your eyes! Unfortunately the delicate skin around our precious peepers is one of the first areas to show signs of ageing, and whether it's from constant late nights, sun exposure, or simply because of your age, those wrinkles can make you look and feel older than you actually are. But all is not lost! I’m here to tell you there are ways to visibly reduce them and restore a more youthful, refreshed look! Keep reading as we count down 9 proven tips and products to help smooth out your under-eye area and keep those obvious wrinkles at bay.

  1. Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate!

The skin under your eyes needs constant moisture to stay plump and healthy. Dry skin shows wrinkles more prominently, so it’s essential to hydrate both inside and out. Drink plenty of water throughout the day (think 8 glasses and more if you can!) and use an eye eye or serum in the morning specifically formulated for hydration. Look for ingredients like hyaluronic acid, glycerin, and peptides to lock in moisture and plump up the skin.

  1. Sun protection is a Must

By now we should all know that UV rays are one of the leading causes of premature ageing, including under-eye wrinkles!! Daily use of a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher will protect your skin and eyes from harmful sun damage.

  1. Invest in a gemstone roller

A gemstone roller will not only help reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles around the eyes, but when used correctly, it can dramatically reduce puffiness by moving excess fluid around your eyes towards your lymph nodes where it filters out the toxins too. 1. Invest in an anti-ageing eye cream specifically formulated to target under eye wrinkles

At night make sure you apply a really nourishing anti-ageing eye cream. Look for ingredients such as vitamin C, retinol, collagen, hyaluronic acid, and peptides, which will help promote collagen production helping to reduce wrinkles but it will help brighten the under-eye area too! We love Vie Collection Chrono Eyes Puffiness – Dark Circles Wrinkle Cream. This outstanding eye cream draws its inspiration from the eye rejuvenating hyaluronic acid injections carried out in aesthetic doctors practices! It’s suitable for everyone, even those with super sensitive eyes and it does exactly what the bottle says! It attacks puffiness, dark circles and wrinkles with a powerful burst of encapsulated high molecular weight hyaluronic acid, injectables-like peptide, fatty acids, vitamin c and niacinamide for exceptional results.

  1. Be armed with a good concealer

Completely eradicating under eye wrinkles is next to impossible but it is possible to make your reduced wrinkles look non-existent by arming yourself with a really good concealer specifically for the delicate eye area. Simply dot the concealer using your pinky finger (the warmth of your fingers will help the concealer to melt into your skin creating a smooth, natural application). My go-to concealer is the ELES Dual Action Concealer. Its an anti-ageing wonder rich in Vitamins E & C, caffeine, collagen, hyaluronic acid and Tetrapeptide 5 which works to depuff, smooth, brighten and conceal the eyes, neutralizing dark circles and hiding fine lines. Its moisturising formula also provides continuous hydration as well as a natural longwearing finish meaning it lasts for hours without seeping into fine lines and wrinkles! Bonus!

  1. Adjust your diet

Make sure you eat foods rich in vitamin E which can help to fight enzymes that break down skin elasticity. Vitamin E also fights free radicals which causes wrinkles and ageing. It also helps to remove blemishes and dark circles too! Foods like almond, peanuts, sunflower seeds, spinach, and broccoli are good!

  1. Don’t over expose your eyes to sun!

Sunscreen isn’t the only way to protect your peepers from the sun! To prevent wrinkles from forming prematurely around the eyes, don’t forget to wear sunglasses, this will prevent squinting. Oh and opt for a protective hat too!

  1. Get your beauty sleep!

One of the most common contributors to undereye wrinkles is lack of sleep! Eek, so you need to ensure you are getting enough beauty sleep every night, we are talking 7-9 hours minimum! Lack of sleep affects your skin's hydration, collagen levels, and blood circulation. When you don’t get enough shut eye your skin becomes dehydrated, making fine lines and wrinkles more visible. Lack of sleep also increases cortisol, the stress hormone, which breaks down collagen—the protein responsible for keeping skin firm and smooth. And finally poor sleep reduces blood flow, causing the under-eye area to appear dull and tired, while fluid retention leads to puffiness and sagging, further exaggerating wrinkles!! Yet another reason why quality sleep is so essential!

  1. Upgrade your pillow case

If you are one for sleeping with your face in the pillow, you might want to consider switching up your cotton pillowcase to a silk or satin alternative instead. Silk has natural moisturising properties to retain moisture around the eyes. The dense weave of the silky-smooth fibres also keep moisture close to your skin, this extra moisture can help to reduce dark circles, fine lines and wrinkles.

Just remember, Rome wasn’t built in day, and your under-eye skin won’t transform overnight either sadly (if only!) Be patient and be religious with these steps and you’ll be waking up to smoother, brighter and younger looking eyes soon!
