24 beauty habits that are ageing you

24 beauty habits that are ageing you

by Jo Boyden on Sep 27 2024
Let's face it, we are all on the quest for radiant, youthful skin with many of us investing both our hard-earned money and time into perfecting our daily beauty routine as a result, but I’m here to tell you, that despite our best efforts the majority of us will still be making daily beauty mistakes, or following bad habits should I say, that actually add years to our face by making us look older than we actually are! Eek. From over-exfoliating to skipping sunscreen, keep reading as we count down 24 common beauty habits that could be ageing you! Remember it’s not too late to remedy this once you know the ones you are guilty of!   Wearing SPF only during the summer Let’s start with the most important habit of all, sunscreen. Not wearing SPF daily all year round is one of the biggest mistakes you can make for your skin. The suns harmful UV rays is hands down the no. 1 contributor to skin ageing so skipping your SPF is a no no. Yes, it's easy to remember to apply it when you're headed to the beach, or out and about on holiday, but so many of us skip this vital step in our everyday lives and not because we are necessarily lazy but because we don't understand the long term affect not wearing it will have on our skin! Even on cloudy days or when you’re indoors, UV rays can cause premature ageing, leading to wrinkles, dark spots, and sagging. Sun damage is cumulative, so every time you skip sunscreen, you’re speeding up the ageing process. How to fix it: Make SPF 30 or higher your daily must-have. Apply it generously every morning, and don’t forget to reapply throughout the day—especially if you’re spending time outdoors. And we understand that many sunscreens can feel oily on your skin or leave an unruly white residue that’s why we highly recommend Medicalia’s Sunscreen SPF 40 with Blue Light Shield. Thinking that the SPF in your makeup is enough to protect your skin Unless your makeup has an SPF factor of 30 or above it's unlikely to ward off premature ageing if worn alone. This is because the majority of makeup will protect against UVB rays but won't block UVA rays which is what causes skin damage. How to fix it: Layering your skin with a high factor SPF moisturiser and then foundation will give you the best chance of maintaining skin's youthful appearance, but if you are in love with your daily moisturiser which doesn't contain sun protection, use a foundation or BB Cream with a high enough SPF. We highly recommend ELES Blue Light Radiant BB Cream SPF 30. Formulated with potent ingredients including peptides, beta-carotene, amino acids, vitamin c, niacinamide, hyaluronic acid, vitamin e and vitamin c, it nourishes, brightens and protects skin against UVA and UVB, as well as blue light and free radical damage! Genius. Not updating your skincare as your skin changes You might have been loyal to the same moisturiser for many years but sadly the skincare you've used in your 20's really won't cut it in your 30's, 40's and beyond. This is because as we age our skin's needs dramatically change. Skin becomes thinner, drier, more sensitive, and loses elasticity as collagen and elastin start to deplete, while fine lines and wrinkles start to form. How to fix it: Understand your skin type and needs and choose products accordingly. Anti-ageing skincare rich in ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, collagen, and vitamin C become essential as we get older. For more info on this read about the 7 super ingredients in your skincare that are all the rage and adjust your products accordingly.   Skipping on your moisturiser It's that time of the month and a few pesky pimples have reared their ugly head, or perhaps you are often prone to adult acne or simply suffer from oily skin, so suddenly you think it best to lay off the moisturiser which must be exacerbating the issue right? Wrong. While you are likely not alone in thinking lathering up on moisturiser seems counterintuitive, everyone, no matter what your skin type or concern, needs to apply a moisturiser daily! This is because moisturiser maintains skin hydration throughout the day and therefore assists in fighting premature fine lines and wrinkles too. In fact, applying moisturiser will greatly reduce your chance of developing extreme dryness, skin sensitivity, or oiliness! Why? Dehydrated skin can lead to issues like inflammation, premature skin ageing, and even breakouts. When your skin becomes dry, your body responds by making more oil! And we all know excess oil can clog pores leading to more of those darn pesky pimples. How to fix it: Don’t skip moisturiser ever. Simply find the one that will be best for your skin type. Search BC by your skin concern and then look for the moisturiser that will be right for you. Just be sure to opt for lighter moisturisers by day, especially in the warmer months, and richer creams at night.   Focusing only on Wrinkles While we are all concerned about fine lines and wrinkles as we age, dark spots and pigmentation can actually give our complexion a dull, devitalised and in turn much older appearance too! In fact, dark spots and uneven skin tone can make us look 10 years older! How to fix it: If you suffer from hyperpigmentation ensure you introduce products specifically to help with this skin concern. We promise it'll positively impact your complexion and protect your skin too. Try Vie Collection's Mela White Radiance Brightening Essense, a triple-action daily cream that effectively acts against dark spots, free radicals, and UV. The results will speak for themselves. Ignoring eye care Unfortunately our eyes are the first area of our face to show ageing, so you need to show it love just as you would the rest of your face! Like a moisturiser, an eye cream’s main objective is to deliver brightening and anti-ageing ingredients, however in a milder, gentler, safer dose. Moisturisers tend to have a much richer consistency in comparison to their counterpart which if applied under the eyes can prove too much, resulting in irritation, allergic reactions and milia. How to fix it: Applying a good eye cream daily is essential in keeping fine, lines and wrinkles at yay! You can also buy eye creams targeted to specific eye concerns such as crow’s feet, under eye bags and dark circles. We highly recommend Vie Collection's Chrono Eyes Puffiness-Dark Circles Wrinkle Cream. A mouthful to say I know, but a product that does exactly what it says. It’s a beautifully fine cream enriched with moisturising ingredients to nourish the eye area while reversing puffiness, dark circles, and wrinkles! Seriously! Want younger looking eyes? Start wearing eye cream or eye gel today!   Rubbing Your Eyes The area around our eyes is the most delicate on our face, fact. When we are tired it's easy to fall into the trap of rubbing our eyes, but rubbing, tugging, or pulling at your eye area can cause tiny blood vessles to break resulting in dark circles that make you look tired All. Of. The. Time. How to fix it: Be mindful of your eyes. When youre tired try to leave them alone! And if you haven’t already get a good anti-ageing eye gel and eye cream for morning and night and start applying then stat!   8. Ignoring Your neck and decolletage Oh, the forgotten area! And the area of your skin which can actually age you the most! Exposed to sunlight just as much as your face, if your neck and decolletage aren't cared for daily or protected with SPF, they can end up crepey and wrinkly so much earlier than they should! Whatever you do for your face you should do for your neck and decolletage too. How to fix it: There are neck and chest specific products you can use, I personally use Phytomer's Decollete Parfait Neck and Decollete Renewing Care, it hydrates, nourishes refines and brightens skin for a more youthful appearance while smoothing wrinkles too! But there is also nothing wrong with using your daily moisturiser or a hydrating body cream instead! Just start doing it now! Forgetting your hands! We often focus all our anti-aging efforts on our face, but areas like hands can give away your age just as quickly. And I can bet your bottom dollar that many of us are not looking after this delicate area! The back of your hands have thinner skin and are often exposed to the sun and environmental damage, yet they’re frequently overlooked in our skincare routines. How to fix it: Whatever you do for your face, do for your hands! Its simple! Apply sunscreen, moisturiser, and anti-ageing products daily. We highly recommend Pevonia’s Collagen Hand Cream, its divinely nourishing and gives hands an instant lift in appearance and texture. Avoiding exfoliators It's not just fine lines and wrinkles that make you look older, having a dull uneven skin tone can easily add years to your face as well! As we age our skin's natural ability to shed dead cells declines, so without weekly exfoliation skin can become uneven, dull and lacklustre. This is why exfoliation is so imperative, and not a step that should be ignored. How to fix it: Many people are scared of exfoliation because they think their skin is too sensitive, and it will just aggravate an existing issue, but that's where natural enzyme exfoliators can be the answer. Hubislab's Pure Balance Papaya Enzyme Peeling Wash, Phytomer's Vegetal Exfoliant with Natural Enzymes and Pevonia's Enzymo Spherides Peeling Cream are formulated with natural enzymes which basically melt away dead cells so no scrubbing is needed. Just remember removing dead skin cells helps your skin properly absorb moisturiser which in turn keeps fine lines and dehydration at bay, as well as brightening skins radiance. Now, who wouldn't want that!! Or simply going overboard with exfoliating If you tend to sway the other way and love to exfoliate your skin a little too much i'm here to tell you stop it now! Over exfoliating can actually slow cell turnover and lead to irritation and inflammation. Over time, this can weaken your skin’s barrier, causing fine lines and wrinkles to appear more quickly. Your skin needs time to regenerate, and over-exfoliating can strip away essential oils and moisture, making you look older. How to fix it: Stick to exfoliation once, maybe twice a week for the best results. If you like to use an exfoliator with grains or microbeads but skin tends to be a little on the sensitive side give Pevonia's Gentle Exfoliating Cleanser a go. it’s great for those who love physical exfoliators with granules but want to steer clear of facial scrubs which could be a little harsh on the skin. It gently polishes your complexion with its unique creamy yet granular texture, formulated with jojoba beads, saponaria and chamomile, revealing a softer, smoother and brighter complexion every time! Not drinking enough water As I'm sitting here writing this, I can hold my hands up and say today so far I've only drunk 2 glasses of water when I should have in fact consumed at least a litre by now! Yes, it's fact, water, or lack of should I say is a real skin ager!! And I know I must practice what a preach! The thing is I do, but some days I will admit it's easy to forget! And when I do, I get cross with myself as I can see it in my skin! It's drier, duller and devitalised. This is because drinking 'enough' water helps the body to flush out toxins while increasing blood flow to the skin which gives it an even tone and dewy appearance! And dewy skin equals youthful skin after all! How to fix it: Aim to drink at least 8 glasses of water a day to keep your skin hydrated from the inside out. Adding water-rich foods like cucumbers and watermelon to your diet can also give your skin an extra hydration boost. Not a huge fan of water? Try a good herbal tea instead.   Yo-Yo Dieting Constantly fluctuating between losing and gaining weight can wreak havoc on your skin. Yo-yo dieting can cause your skin to stretch and lose elasticity, making it more prone to sagging and wrinkles. The loss of essential nutrients during restrictive diets can also lead to dull, unhealthy-looking skin. How to fix it: Focus on a balanced, nutrient-rich diet that supports overall health, including your skin. Healthy fats, antioxidants, and vitamins will keep your skin nourished and resilient.   Ignoring Stress Stress doesn’t just affect your mood—it can take a toll on your skin too. Stress increases cortisol, which breaks down collagen and leads to wrinkles. How to fix it: Make stress management a priority with mindfulness practices, regular exercise, and relaxation techniques. Indulging in hot showers and baths How many of us are guilty of indulging in a hot shower or simply washing our faces with water set to a high temp. Unfortunately extreme water temperatures will strip healthy natural oils from your skin quickly, making it dry and therefore age much faster. Water that's too hot can also dilate your capillaries leading to spider veins. How to fix it: For best and healthy results you should be washing with lukewarm water! Easier to achieve in the warmer months!   Not getting enough sleep....when you could get more If I had a dollar for every time I said to my husband I must get to bed early tonight because I need more sleep and am fed up of looking old and tired, I'd be a rich woman. While they say practice what you preach, I am a testament that not getting enough sleep (when I could indeed fit in another 1-2 hours a night (darn netflix!) literally does age you. Poor sleep is quite literally to blame for premature ageing, dermatitis, eczema, acne, loss of collagen and more! Scary right? So let's make a pact and try for that 8 hours + we really do need nightly. Now be sure to follow our advice to be sure you slow down the signs of ageing naturally! How to fix it: Aim for 7-9 hours of quality sleep each night to give your skin the time it needs to recover and rejuvenate.   Over doing your brows Yes, we need brows to look youthful, after all they frame the eyes and lift the face. Many of us tweezed our brows to thin lines in the 80’s only to find they never grew back so what to many of us do! Fill out our brows, but often with harsh, red toned pencils which im afraid can make us look hard and older! How to fix it: The goal is to create natural looking thicker brows like the ones we used to have. Opt for taupe colour brow products instead of warm browns, these will frame your eyes beautifully without taking over your face. Apply the brow product in soft stokes to create the illusion of natural hair. Be sure not to overfill the front part of your brow though! This area should have soft hair that graduates into more density. We recommend using the ELES Precision Brow Pencil. The soft, fine pencil allows you to perfectly line and fill your brows and the formula lasts for us to 10 hours! It’s amazing. Using the wrong tone of foundation Many foundations and BB Creams come in both warm and cool tones but remember for many of us cool tones can exacerbate signs of age! This is because they often have blue, pink, or ashy undertones, which can accentuate fine lines, wrinkles, and uneven skin texture. As skin ages, it tends to lose its natural warmth and radiance, so using a foundation with cool tones can make the complexion appear dull, flat, or even greyish too! Which in turn can also highlight dark circles or any sallowness in the skin. How to fix it: Opt for warmer tones that help counteract complexion pinkness that comes with thinning of the skin and exposure of fine capillaries. Warmer tones also conceal shadows better which means you need less concealer. We recommend using ELES Blue Light Radiant BB Cream 30, it’s packed with nature’s anti-ageing actives and leaves the skin glowing.   19. Overloading on foundation powder Face powder, when used correctly and frugally can be a fantastic makeup staple (I have been I’m in love with the ELES Mineral Powder Foundation for years!) however, no matter your skin type, too much face powder can actually age you! That’s right, it can highlight fine lines and wrinkles instead of helping to conceal them! How to fix it: Im not saying you have to totally forgo your trusty powder foundation compact, but it’s best to use powder sparingly – on your t-zone, or for quick touch-up’s, Or better still make sure you opt for a lightweight powder!   Using the wrong concealer or concealer shade As we mature and our face loses its youthful “plumpness”, shadow start to really appear under our eyes, around the nose, and at the corners of our mouth. It’s tempting to reach for a heavy duty, ultra-light shade concealer to hide these dark areas. The problem is that they just make the dark shadows look grey as opposed to concealing them! How to fix it: Opt instead for peachy toned, lightweight concealers that won’t cake on the skin and counteract the blue in the shadows. We recommend ELES Dual Action Concealer, it acts like 8 hours of sleep in a tube! We love it! Applying eye makeup that makes the eyes droop Who doesn’t love makeup! After all it can boost our confidence, enhance our natural beauty and help soften the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles! But sadly certain eye makeup techniques and products can make our eyes appear droopy as well as emphasize ageing signs as we get older! Thick, dark eyeliner, especially on the lower lash line, can make eyes look smaller and more tired. It can also draw attention to sagging skin around our delicate peepers. Then there is our eyeshadow! Eyeshadow enhances eye shape, adds depth and dimension making eyes appear more vibrant but shimmer and frosty shades while fun can settle into fine lines and wrinkles, exacerbating them and making our eyelids look more creased or droopy. How to fix it: To counteract this, opt for lighter, more neutral shades on the lids, keep eyeliner lighter, thin and lifted, and focus on lifting the upper lash line to create a more youthful, wide-eyed appearance. For your eyeliner we recommend ELES Superwear Gel Eyeliner, its soft and easy to blend out and once set won’t transfer to the lids. If you have hooded or droopy eyes here are some top tips to improve them naturally. Continuing to use that cold frosted lipstick we love As we age, similar to our skin, our lips start to lose volume and in turn fine lines start to form! Unfortunately that frosted lip colour that we once loved (and looked good) no longer does! This is because frosted lip colours enhance these lines making your lips age you even more! How to fix it: It’s time to change up your lipstick! Instead of that frosted favourite, opt for a cream or satin lipstick that will make your lips look fuller and smoother. Many of these contain moisturising molecules that plump the lips and keep them hydrated longer.   Going to bed with makeup on Well here's one you've heard many a time before! Right? From a few too many wines to being just plain old exhausted, sometimes it hard to peel yourself off your bed to go and remove your makeup but remove your makeup you must! Cleansing your face especially at night to remove not only your makeup but any remnants of the days sweat, dirt and grime is imperative for healthy skin. Not removing your makeup means your skin is unable to regenerate effectively while you sleep, pores clog, blemishes form and fatigue (ageing!) signs start to appear. Makeup can also trap dirt and pollution, which leads to oxidative stress—damaging your skin and breaking down collagen, the protein that keeps your skin firm and smooth. How to fix it: No matter how tired you are, make cleansing a non-negotiable part of your nighttime routine. Use a gentle cleanser or micellar water to remove makeup and grime, giving your skin a chance to breathe and repair while you sleep. For a fantastic makeup remover which effectively melts away makeup and grime with minimum effort try Phytomer's Doux Contour Eye and Lip Waterproof Makeup Remover. Combining the effectiveness of an oil (a trio of oils in fact) and the gentleness of a lotion, this ultra-hydrating makeup remover, eradicates even the most stubborn of lips and eye makeup fast! To read more about sleeping in makeup and what it really does to our skin click here. 24. Sleeping on your stomach or side This one might surprise you, but the way you sleep can actually affect your skin. If you regularly sleep on your stomach or side, your face gets squished against the pillow, which can lead to wrinkles over time. These “sleep lines” tend to form around the eyes, cheeks, and forehead, making you look older. Just great I hear you say! How to fix it: Try sleeping on your back to reduce pressure on your face. Investing in a silk or satin pillowcase can also help, as it causes less friction on your skin than cotton.
How to reduce under eye wrinkles: 9 proven tips

How to reduce under eye wrinkles: 9 proven tips

by Jo Boyden on Sep 20 2024
If you’re in your 40s like me, it’s likely you’ve started to notice fine lines and wrinkles showing up under your eyes! Unfortunately the delicate skin around our precious peepers is one of the first areas to show signs of ageing, and whether it's from constant late nights, sun exposure, or simply because of your age, those wrinkles can make you look and feel older than you actually are. But all is not lost! I’m here to tell you there are ways to visibly reduce them and restore a more youthful, refreshed look! Keep reading as we count down 9 proven tips and products to help smooth out your under-eye area and keep those obvious wrinkles at bay.   Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate! The skin under your eyes needs constant moisture to stay plump and healthy. Dry skin shows wrinkles more prominently, so it’s essential to hydrate both inside and out. Drink plenty of water throughout the day (think 8 glasses and more if you can!) and use an eye eye or serum in the morning specifically formulated for hydration. Look for ingredients like hyaluronic acid, glycerin, and peptides to lock in moisture and plump up the skin.   Sun protection is a Must By now we should all know that UV rays are one of the leading causes of premature ageing, including under-eye wrinkles!! Daily use of a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher will protect your skin and eyes from harmful sun damage.   Invest in a gemstone roller A gemstone roller will not only help reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles around the eyes, but when used correctly, it can dramatically reduce puffiness by moving excess fluid around your eyes towards your lymph nodes where it filters out the toxins too. Cool right? To find out more about the facial rollers and how to use them click here.   Invest in an anti-ageing eye cream specifically formulated to target under eye wrinkles At night make sure you apply a really nourishing anti-ageing eye cream. Look for ingredients such as vitamin C, retinol, collagen, hyaluronic acid, and peptides, which will help promote collagen production helping to reduce wrinkles but it will help brighten the under-eye area too! We love Vie Collection Chrono Eyes Puffiness – Dark Circles Wrinkle Cream. This outstanding eye cream draws its inspiration from the eye rejuvenating hyaluronic acid injections carried out in aesthetic doctors practices! It’s suitable for everyone, even those with super sensitive eyes and it does exactly what the bottle says! It attacks puffiness, dark circles and wrinkles with a powerful burst of encapsulated high molecular weight hyaluronic acid, injectables-like peptide, fatty acids, vitamin c and niacinamide for exceptional results.   Be armed with a good concealer Completely eradicating under eye wrinkles is next to impossible but it is possible to make your reduced wrinkles look non-existent by arming yourself with a really good concealer specifically for the delicate eye area. Simply dot the concealer using your pinky finger (the warmth of your fingers will help the concealer to melt into your skin creating a smooth, natural application). My go-to concealer is the ELES Dual Action Concealer. Its an anti-ageing wonder rich in Vitamins E & C, caffeine, collagen, hyaluronic acid and Tetrapeptide 5 which works to depuff, smooth, brighten and conceal the eyes, neutralizing dark circles and hiding fine lines. Its moisturising formula also provides continuous hydration as well as a natural longwearing finish meaning it lasts for hours without seeping into fine lines and wrinkles! Bonus!   Adjust your diet Make sure you eat foods rich in vitamin E which can help to fight enzymes that break down skin elasticity. Vitamin E also fights free radicals which causes wrinkles and ageing. It also helps to remove blemishes and dark circles too! Foods like almond, peanuts, sunflower seeds, spinach, and broccoli are good!   Don’t over expose your eyes to sun! Sunscreen isn’t the only way to protect your peepers from the sun! To prevent wrinkles from forming prematurely around the eyes, don’t forget to wear sunglasses, this will prevent squinting. Oh and opt for a protective hat too!   Get your beauty sleep! One of the most common contributors to undereye wrinkles is lack of sleep! Eek, so you need to ensure you are getting enough beauty sleep every night, we are talking 7-9 hours minimum! Lack of sleep affects your skin's hydration, collagen levels, and blood circulation. When you don’t get enough shut eye your skin becomes dehydrated, making fine lines and wrinkles more visible. Lack of sleep also increases cortisol, the stress hormone, which breaks down collagen—the protein responsible for keeping skin firm and smooth. And finally poor sleep reduces blood flow, causing the under-eye area to appear dull and tired, while fluid retention leads to puffiness and sagging, further exaggerating wrinkles!! Yet another reason why quality sleep is so essential!   Upgrade your pillow case If you are one for sleeping with your face in the pillow, you might want to consider switching up your cotton pillowcase to a silk or satin alternative instead. Silk has natural moisturising properties to retain moisture around the eyes. The dense weave of the silky-smooth fibres also keep moisture close to your skin, this extra moisture can help to reduce dark circles, fine lines and wrinkles. Just remember, Rome wasn’t built in day, and your under-eye skin won’t transform overnight either sadly (if only!) Be patient and be religious with these steps and you’ll be waking up to smoother, brighter and younger looking eyes soon!

SPF protection: Choosing the best sunscreen for your skin

SPF protection: Choosing the best sunscreen for your skin

by Jo Boyden on Sep 06 2024
With the weather warming up and many of swapping out our jumpers for summer attire, it’s time to make sure we are being serious about our suncare! And yes, you should be wearing SPF protection all year round come rain, hail or shine, but it’s the spring and summer months that can really do the most damage to our skin due to an increase in sun exposure and UVA and UVB intensity. With so many sunscreen options out there though, it’s easy to feel confused about which one to choose, how much to apply, and why it’s so important in the first place. Keep reading as we explain why SPF is non-negotiable for anyone who cares about their skin and how to choose the best sunscreen for you.   Firstly, why is sunscreen so important? As much as we all love the sun, it sadly emits harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays that can do serious damage to our skin, leading to premature ageing and in some cases skin cancer. These UV rays come in two main forms: UVA and UVB, and they both affect our skin in different ways. A daily SPF acts as a protective barrier, preventing these rays from damaging our skin.   UVA verses UVB rays When it comes to protecting your skin from the sun, understanding the difference between UVA and UVB rays is essential for choosing the right sunscreen. UVB rays affect the surface of your skin and are primarily responsible for sunburn. They also play a significant role in developing skin cancer. UVB rays vary in intensity depending on the season, but they’re dangerous year-round. UVA rays penetrate deeper into your skin and are responsible for premature ageing, causing wrinkles, fine lines, and dark spots. UVA rays can also contribute to skin cancer. They are present year-round, even on cloudy days, and can even penetrate through windows! Scary stuff! To protect against both UVA and UVB rays you need a broad-spectrum sunscreen.   What does SPF stand for and what does it actually mean? SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor, and it’s a measure of how long your skin is protected from UVB rays only, before it starts to burn. For example, SPF 30 means your skin is protected 30 times longer than it would be without sunscreen. However, this doesn’t mean that higher SPF numbers offer exponentially more protection. Here’s how it breaks down: SPF 15 blocks about 93% of UVB rays. SPF 30 blocks about 97% of UVB rays. SPF 50 blocks about 98% of UVB rays. While SPF 100 might seem like overkill, there’s only a slight increase in protection from SPF 50 to SPF 100, so don’t stress too much about going over SPF 50. What matters most is that you’re applying enough sunscreen and reapplying it regularly.   How does SPF work? SPF doesn’t create an impenetrable shield but rather extends the amount of time you can stay in the sun without burning. For example, if your skin would normally burn after 10 minutes in the sun, applying SPF 30 theoretically extends that time by 30 times, giving you about 300 minutes (or 5 hours) of protection. This can vary based on factors like skin type, intensity of sunlight, and amount of sunscreen applied. There are two main types of sunscreens - physical (mineral) and chemical sunscreen: Physical or mineral-based sunscreens are formulated with ingredients like zinc oxide and titanium dioxide which create a barrier on your skin’s surface that reflects UV rays. They’re great for sensitive skin and are often less irritating. Chemical sunscreens formulated with ingredients like homosalate, avobenzone and oxybenzone, work by absorbing UV rays before they can damage your skin. They’re often lighter in texture but may irritate sensitive skin.   How long does SPF really last for? Even though the SPF number indicates extended protection, sunscreens typically last only 2 hours before they need to be reapplied. This is especially true if you’re swimming, sweating, or towelling off. Water-resistant sunscreens can help, but they still need to be reapplied frequently to maintain their effectiveness.   Additional application tips: Be sure to apply sunscreen generously to all exposed areas of your skin, and don’t forget often-missed spots like your ears, neck, and the tops of your feet. The key to effective sun protection is consistency—whether it’s sunny or cloudy, always include sunscreen in your daily skincare routine, it’s THE most important step!   Choosing the right SPF: For daily use, an SPF 30 sunscreen is generally sufficient, as it blocks about 97% of UVB rays. However, if you have fair skin, are prone to burning, or spend a lot of time outdoors, consider an SPF 50 or higher for additional protection. Keep in mind that no sunscreen can block 100% of UV rays, so reapplication every two hours, or after swimming or sweating, is crucial.   What is the best sunscreen for you? The first thing you want to do when selecting your sunscreen is to know your skin type. If you have oily skin, you’ll want to look for a non-comedogenic, oil-free formulations that won’t clog pores. Dry skin? Opt for a sunscreen with hydrating ingredients like glycerin or hyaluronic acid. For sensitive skin, mineral sunscreens are your best bet, as they’re less likely to cause irritation. For daily use under makeup, a lightweight, mattifying sunscreen might be more suitable. Some sunscreen products can be specially formulated to provide other benefits to the skin, such as extra moisture, and may contain beneficial ingredients like soothing niacinamide and ceramides to restore your skin’s natural protective barrier.   Our sunscreen recommendations; Hubislab Post Rays UV Protect Sun Block SPF50+ PA+++ This amazing multi-tasking sun block provides complete UV and antioxidant protection for ageing or stressed-out skin! Its non-irritating, has an SPF of 50+ and protects the skin against UV radiation, preventing dryness, dullness and signs of premature ageing including hyperpigmentation. Rich in peptides and collagen it keeps skin nourished, healthy and elastic and the invisible matte formula applies smoothly and stays on all day. With zinc oxide as its main ingredient, there is zero irritation, so it is ideal for all skin types including those with extremely sensitive and/or ageing skin.   Medicalia Sunscreen SPF 40 with Blue Light Shield The one and only reason why so many people are reluctant to use sunscreen (despite knowing how important it is) is because they can’t stand the texture or smell. Well with this outstanding tinted formulation there is no thick white paste or unruly sunscreen smell in sight! It feels like a lightweight moisturiser, smells divine, is loaded with anti-ageing goodies and it won’t cause itchiness thanks to its mineral formulation including both zinc and iron oxides. Very slightly tinted (though most of the tint disappears once it’s absorbed) it leaves your skin looking smoother and calmer. Oh and it protects skin against not only UVA and UVB rays (yes it provides skin with broad spectrum protection) but pollution and blue light damage omitted from our screens too! What’s more the formula is reef-safe and works for all skin types and tones too! Its outstanding!   Vie Collection Mela White Protective Sunscreen SPF 30 This is not only an amazing daily sunscreen to protect skin from UV rays, but it’s also formulated with two high-tech ingredients that act against hyperpigmentation and free radicals. Day after day, with daily use of course! Dark spots are less visible, skin is unified, smoothed and better protected. It’s a fantastic option for those who are after a great sun protection but are already suffering from sun damage.   ELES Blue Light Radiant BB Cream 30 If you are looking for an SPF product that is your makeup and daily moisturiser in one, look no further than this best-selling BB Cream with SPF 30 from ELES. The ultimate multi-tasker, this radiance boosting, de-ageing BB Cream is your morning moisturiser, foundation and sun protection all in one. Formulated with potent ingredients including peptides, beta-carotene, amino acids, vitamin c, niacinamide, hyaluronic acid, vitamin e and vitamin c, it nourishes, brightens and protects skin against UVA, UVB, blue light and free radical damage! Genius! What’s more it provides light, buildable coverage, evening out skin tone while minimising the appearance of fine lines and imperfections for a truly natural, luminous finish!   Just remember, the best sunscreen is the one you’ll use consistently, so find a formula that feels comfortable on your skin and fits seamlessly into your routine. Just be sure its labelled as broad-spectrum so you have comprehensive coverage against both harmful rays.
9 signs of a damaged skin barrier and how to fix it

9 signs of a damaged skin barrier and how to fix it

by Jo Boyden on Sep 06 2024
A healthy skin barrier is the secret to glowing skin. When it’s healthy, our skin looks radiant and plump, but when it’s damaged it can become prone to dryness, inflammation, breakouts and more! If you’ve been dealing with skin issues that just won’t go away, your skin barrier could well be to blame!  Keep reading to learn about 9 common signs of a damaged skin barrier, why yours may be compromised and the best solutions to fix it!   What is our skin barrier? The outer most layer of our skin, or technically known as the stratum corneum, our skin barrier is a complex system of lipids, proteins and cells. It’s the first line of defence against bacteria and external aggressors, from pollution and harsh weather conditions, to stress, smoking and even blue light damage from our digital devices! Think of it as a protective shield keeping irritants out and locking moisture in. What are the most common signs of a damaged skin barrier? Increased sensitivity Do you find your skin reacting to products that never used to be a problem? Unfortunately a damaged barrier can make your skin hypersensitive. This means that products with active ingredients like retinol or vitamin C might suddenly cause stinging or irritation. Aghh How to fix it: Simplify your skincare routine. Focus on soothing and hydrating skin. Opt for fragrance-free, hypoallergenic products designed specifically for sensitive skin, then slowly reintroduce active ingredients once your barrier is repaired. Dryness and Flakiness Dry, flaky skin can be a major sign that your skin barrier isn’t holding onto moisture the way it should. Even if you’re moisturising regularly, your skin might still feel parched and tight. How to fix it: You need to incorporate a hydrating serum rich in hyaluronic acid into your daily routine and up the ante with your moisturiser too! You want a nourishing moisturiser formulated with ceramides, hyaluronic acid and glycerin which will help lock in moisture and rebuild the barrier. Redness and Inflammation One of the first indicators of a damaged skin barrier is redness that just won’t go away. If your skin is constantly inflamed, blotchy, or has developed conditions like rosacea, it’s a sign that your protective layer is compromised. Without the barrier functioning properly, your skin is more susceptible to irritants and environmental factors that can cause persistent redness. How to fix it: Calm your skin with products containing anti-inflammatory ingredients like niacinamide, aloe vera, and chamomile. Avoid anything that could further irritate your skin, like harsh exfoliants or overly fragrant products. Breakouts and Acne When your skin barrier is compromised, your skin can overproduce oil to compensate for the lack of moisture. This can lead to clogged pores, breakouts, and even acne in those of us who normally have clear skin. How to fix it: Use a gentle cleanser that will remove excess oil without stripping the skin of its natural moisture. And make sure you avoid products that could clog your pores. Incorporate lightweight, oil-free moisturisers that hydrate without causing breakouts. Tightness and Discomfort Do you often feel like your skin is tight or uncomfortable, especially after cleansing? This could be a sign that your barrier is stripped of its natural oils. When your skin loses its protective lipids, it can no longer maintain its elasticity and comfort, leading to a sensation of tightness. How to fix it: The first step to fixing tight, uncomfortable skin is to replenish lost moisture and help rebuild the lipid layer of the barrier. Creamy or oil-based cleansers are great for restoring hydration while gently removing dirt and impurities and look for products rich in ceramides, fatty acids, glycerin, hyaluronic acid and squalane which will help restore the natural protective layer as well as lock in moisture. Hyperpigmentation A weakened barrier can make your skin more susceptible to damage from the sun and environmental pollutants, leading to an increase in hyperpigmentation such as dark spots, also known as age spots and sun spots! If you notice that your skin is developing more pigmentation issues, it could be a sign that your barrier needs some serious TLC. How to fix it: Incorporate antioxidants such as vitamin c and niacinamide into your skincare routine as they can help repair the skin and reduce the appearance of dark spots by neutralizing free radicals. Once your barrier is stronger you can then start introducing targeted treatments to fade hyperpigmentation. And sunscreen is a non-negotiable! Look for sunscreens that not only protect your skin from sun damage but also help repair hyperpigmentation too! Itching and burning sensations If your skin feels itchy, tingly, or has a burning sensation, even when you’re using your usual products, this could be a sign that your skin barrier has been compromised. This discomfort is your skin’s way of telling you it needs some extra care. How to fix it: Avoid using hot water on your face and skip harsh treatments like scrubs or peels. Opt for soothing, fragrance-free moisturisers and avoid over-washing. Dehydrated skin despite an oily appearance Ever had skin that feels oily on the surface but tight and dry underneath? This is a classic sign of a damaged barrier. Your skin might be overproducing oil to make up for the lack of moisture, leading to that uncomfortable mix of oily and dehydrated skin. How to fix it: Balance your skin with hydrating products that aren’t too heavy. Hyaluronic acid serums and light, non-greasy moisturisers can help provide the moisture your skin needs without adding excess oil. Ingredients like glycerin and squalane can provide moisture balance. Premature ageing Without proper protection, your skin is more exposed to free radicals and environmental damage which can accelerate the ageing process! Therefore a damaged skin barrier can lead to premature wrinkles, fine lines, and a loss of elasticity. How to fix it: Focus on repairing your barrier with nourishing, antioxidant-rich products that protect and strengthen your skin. Incorporate ingredients like peptides, vitamin C, vitamin E and sunscreen to help combat free radicals and boost collagen production.   Why do you have a damaged skin barrier? A damaged skin barrier can result from a variety of factors! Anything from your lifestyle and skincare habits to the environment. Here are the most common reasons your skin barrier could be compromised right now; Over-exfoliation Using exfoliants too frequently, whether physical scrubs or chemical exfoliants (like AHAs and BHAs), can strip away the outermost layer of your skin. This layer is crucial for protecting the underlying skin, and over-exfoliating can leave your skin vulnerable to damage. Harsh skincare products Products with high concentrations of active ingredients, such as retinol or acids, can be too strong for some skin types, especially if used too often or without proper moisturising and sun protection. Harsh cleansers with sulfates or alcohol can also strip your skin of its natural oils, leading to a weakened barrier. Environmental factors Exposure to extreme weather conditions—like harsh winds, cold temperatures, or excessive sun—can compromise your skin barrier. Pollution and other environmental toxins can also stress the skin, leading to barrier damage over time. Dehydration There are many reasons your skin might be dehydrated. From the products you are using (you need more moisture) to a change in weather or simply being over exposed to hot or cold air be it air con or heating! And then there is the chance we are simply dehydrated from not drinking enough water I know many of us can be guilty of that! Over-cleansing Washing your face too often or using water that’s too hot can strip your skin of its natural oils. This over-cleansing can disrupt the skin’s natural pH balance and lead to barrier damage. Eek! Stress and lack of sleep Sadly stress and inadequate sleep can really take a toll on our skin. Stress hormones like cortisol can lead to inflammation and impair the skin’s ability to repair itself, making your barrier more susceptible to damage. Allergies and irritants Using products that contain allergens or irritants, such as fragrances or certain preservatives, can trigger allergic reactions or irritation, leading to a compromised skin barrier. Poor diet Yes! You read that right. What you eat can definitely reflect on your skin! A diet lacking in essential nutrients like healthy fats, vitamins, and antioxidants, can weaken your skin barrier. Consuming too much sugar or processed foods can also lead to inflammation and skin issues. Ageing As you age, your skin naturally loses some of its ability to retain moisture and regenerate. This makes the skin barrier more prone to damage and less efficient at protecting against external factors. Medical Conditions Certain skin conditions, like eczema, psoriasis, or rosacea, inherently involve a compromised skin barrier. These conditions require specific care to help manage symptoms and protect the skin.   How to repair a damaged skin barrier If you now know your skin barrier has been damaged there are simple steps you can take to fix it so fear not! Just remember restoring your skin barrier won’t happen overnight though, so make sure you are consistent with your care and you will see improvements we promise! Here are a few general tips: Avoid hot water Ok so this is one I am definitely guilty of. I LOVE a piping hot shower or bath but I do know that this is damaging my skin! Sadly hot water can strip your skin of its natural oils, exacerbating dryness and irritation. Try to be less like me and use lukewarm water when at least cleansing your face! Stay Hydrated Drinking plenty of water helps to maintain your skin’s hydration levels from the inside out (one hand holding my water bottle as I type this!) Try to manage stress and get plenty of shut eye! Stress-reducing activities like meditation, listening to music and exercise can definitely help alleviate stress. And there is a reason “beauty sleep” is a thing! By trying to get enough sleep (7-9 hours day night) can really make a difference to your skin. Protect your skin from the sun Well this is definitely a given. We all know that the sun is the no. 1 cause of damage to our skin. And unfortunately a damaged barrier is more vulnerable to UV damage, so make sure to apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen daily. You should already be anyway! Simplify your routine and use nourishing skincare Less is more when your skin barrier is damaged. Stick to a basic cleanser, cut back on exfoliants, retinol creams, and other potentially irritating products and focus on gentle, hydrating serums and moisturisers formulated with nourishing and barrier-repairing ingredients including ceramides, hyaluronic acid, niacinamide and glycerin. These ingredients help to replenish your skin’s natural lipids and restore its protective function. Hyperpigmentation: The causes and the best treatments

Hyperpigmentation: The causes and the best treatments

by Jo Boyden on Aug 30 2024
Hyperpigmentation is a fairly common skin condition and affects people of all ages. But if you are one of the many dealing with stubborn dark spots or patches on your skin you are likely wondering why and how you can get rid of it! Understanding what causes hyperpigmentation is the first step in effectively treating it. Read on to discover everything you need to know about hyperpigmentation, what the most common causes are, as well as the best options for achieving a more even, radiant complexion.   What is hyperpigmentation? Hyperpigmentation is when certain areas of your skin become darker than the surrounding skin. This happens because of an excess production of melanin, the pigment that gives your skin its colour. Hyperpigmentation can appear as very small brown, black, grey or pink spots, or patches but can also cover larger areas of your skin, usually on your face. These spots or patches are more commonly known as brown spots, age spots, sun spots or as our grandparents used to call them, liver spots. While hyperpigmentation is not harmful, and can be common in people of all ages and skin types, it can definitely be frustrating! Fortunately, with the right treatments, you can effectively reduce the appearance of hyperpigmentation and restore a more even complexion!   What are the most common types of hyperpigmentation? Age Spots Also known as liver spots (as our grandparents would have called them back in the day!), age spots are flat, brown, grey, or black spots that typically appear on sun-exposed areas of the skin as you age. In short, age spots tend to develop in people over the age of 50 and are the result of prolonged UV exposure over the years.  Sun Spots Also caused by UV exposure, sun spots, medically known as actinic keratoses, are similar in appearance to age spots but can occur at any age. Although they can commonly appear on the face, you can also find sun spots all over areas of the body which has been exposed to the sun. The biggest difference between harmless age spots and sun spots is the texture. Age spots are smooth and flat, but potentially dangerous sun spots usually feel rough and scaly. Melasma Also known as chloasma, or “the mask of pregnancy”! the potential main triggers for Melasma is genetics, hormonal fluctuations and sun overexposure. Very common in pregnancy, melasma can suddenly appear in the form of brown patches usually on your face.   What causes hyperpigmentation? Several factors can actually contribute to hyperpigmentation, although sun exposure is the no.1 cause! Sun Exposure UV rays from the sun trigger melanin production, leading to sunspots and dark patches, especially on areas frequently exposed to the sun. Hormonal Changes Conditions like melasma, often triggered by pregnancy or birth control pills, cause dark, blotchy patches on the skin. Inflammation Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation can result from acne, injuries, or skin conditions like eczema, where the skin overproduces melanin during healing. Age Over time, the skin’s ability to regulate melanin production diminishes, leading to age spots.   How to get rid of hyperpigmentation Ultimately to prevent or reduce hyperpigmentation you need to do 4 things; Wear sunscreen Sadly exposure to the sun, (which we know ramps up over the summer months!) can both worsen existing age spots and sun spots, as well as encourage new ones to form! The most effective way to therefore prevent this from happening is to apply sunscreen (at least SPF 30) liberally and religiously even single day. You know I preach about how sunscreen should be a non-negotiable step in your skincare routine come rain, hail or shine though! Use brightening products Products containing Vitamin C, niacinamide and retinol are all powerful allies in the fight against pigmentation. These ingredients work to lighten dark spots and even out your skin tone, leaving you with a brighter, more uniform complexion. Look for formulas with high concentrations of active ingredients for maximum efficacy. Just remember skincare requires patience and consistency to reap the long-term benefits!  Exfoliate regularly Regular exfoliation is key to fading age spots and pigmentation. Alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) and beta hydroxy acids (BHAs) help slough off dead skin cells, promoting cell turnover and revealing fresher, more evenly-toned skin. Consider using a gentle chemical exfoliant a few times a week to target discolouration without irritating your skin. Wear protective clothing Wearing protective clothing will also help fight hyperpigmentation by shielding your skin from harmful UV rays, which as we know are a major cause of age spots, sun spots and uneven skin tone. Fabrics with a tight weave and sun-protective properties will block the penetration of UV rays, reducing the risk of sun-induced pigmentation. Wide-brimmed hats, long sleeves, and UV-protective fabrics are effective at minimizing direct sun exposure, preventing existing pigmentation from worsening, and helping to maintain an even skin tone over time. And don’t forget your peepers! sunglasses are a must too!   The best products to fade hyperpigmentation As mentioned, one of the simplest ways to protect your skin from hyperpigmentation is to wear sunscreen daily, no matter what the weather is like. However if you are looking for products to fade your already pigmentated skin, we have the solution for you!   Vie Collection Mela White Protective Sunscreen SPF 30 This is not only an amazing daily sunscreen to protect skin from UV rays, but it’s also formulated with two high-tech ingredients that act against dark spots and free radicals. It’s fantastic!  Pevonia C Complex with oxyzomes Vitamin C and Hyaluronic Acid work together to hydrate, correct photo damage and drench your skin with repairing antioxidants for a revitalized, youthful glow. It’s really good stuff and I’m testament to that!  Medicalia L Retinol Smoothing Cream This powerful yet gentle retinol cream is a must in the fight against Hyperpigmentation! Formulated with retinol and Glycolic and Lactic Acid, it’s an excellent resurfacing and lightening cream for photodamaged skin. Just be sure to introduce it slowly and apply before bed. Paired with niacinamide, it prevents the formation of hyperpigmentation and reduces melanin production. The result, brighter, more even skin! Vita B3 Concentrated Solution Boost your skincare routine with a shot of vitamin B3 to visibly improve skins radiance while reducing the appearance of dark spots. 10% vitamin B3 (niacinamide) acts by slowing down the transport of melanin to the keratinocytes (the most common type of skin cell constituting the epidermis) effectively decreasing pigmentation while reinforcing the protective functions of the skin barrier for the optimal skin health. The concentrate’s light, melting texture allows the active ingredients to penetrate the skin for outstanding efficiency and immediate results. Skin is brighter, more uniform and more visibly radiant. After continued use, hyperpigmentation is significantly reduced.

Skin in need of nourishment? These are the best products

Skin in need of nourishment? These are the best products

by Jo Boyden on Jul 26 2024
Feeling like your parched skin could do with a little extra love but not sure where to start? Whether your skin’s need for that boost of nourishment is due to stress, lack of sleep, or perhaps it’s the current cold weather that’s causing havoc with your complexion, we are here to help! Keep reading as we round up the best nourishing skincare products. 8 products that will turn your skin from dehydrated to gorgeously glowy in little to no time. Firstly though why are you currently dealing with a parched complexion? Your skin may be feeling particularly dry or dehydrated at the moment due to a combination of environmental, lifestyle, or health factors. Here are the most common causes: Environmental Factors Seasonal Changes: Cold weather and low humidity levels during winter can suck the life out of our already depleted complexion stripping moisture from our skin, leading to dryness. Indoor Heating: Having the heating pumping 24/7 (I know I’m guilty of this!) can reduce indoor humidity, further dehydrating our skin. Sun Exposure: Even in colder months, UV rays can damage our skin and deplete its moisture levels so make sure you are wearing your sunscreen daily! Lifestyle Factors Hydration: Let’s face it, many of us get a little lazy when it comes to rehydrating ourselves during the colder months but not drinking enough water can (and will!) lead to dehydrated skin. Diet: A diet lacking in essential fatty acids, vitamins, and antioxidants can impact our skin's ability to retain moisture so make sure you stock up on your leafy greens, berries and fatty fish. Hot Showers: Who doesn’t love a long hot shower in the morning (and evening!) when its cold outside but believe me when I say by doing so you will strip your skin of its natural oils, causing dryness. Lack of Sleep: Inadequate sleep can lead to a decrease in blood circulation, making the skin look pale and tired. During sleep, the skin repairs and regenerates, so lack of sleep can hinder this process. Stress: Chronic stress can lead to hormonal imbalances that affect the skin, potentially causing issues like acne, dryness, and dullness. Skincare Routine Harsh Cleansers: Using cleansers that contain alcohol or other harsh ingredients can strip your skin of its natural oils, so be vigilant about what you are putting on your skin! Lack of Moisturiser: Skipping moisturiser or using one that isn’t hydrating enough can leave your skin feeling dry. This is why we are here to help! Over-Exfoliation: Exfoliating too often can damage your skin's protective barrier, leading to moisture loss. Best to stick to exfoliating once or twice a week. Health Factors Age: Unfortunately as we age our skin not only reduces its production of collagen and elastin, but it also produces less oil too, making it more prone to dryness. Medical Conditions: Conditions like eczema, psoriasis, and hypothyroidism can cause dry skin. Medications: And if you happen to be taking certain medications right now (and that includes diuretics and acne treatments) they too can have drying effects on the skin. The best products to rejuvenate and nourish your dry and dehydrated skin Now for the products that can really help! The benefits of face oils and the best ones for your skin

The benefits of face oils and the best ones for your skin

by Jo Boyden on Jun 14 2024
If your skin is feeling particularly parched or you’re wondering how to achieve that coveted healthy glow, face oils could be your answer. These potent elixirs are packed with nourishing ingredients that can seriously transform your skin, offering benefits that extend far beyond simple hydration. From enhancing your skin's barrier to providing a boost of antioxidants, face oils are a necessary addition to any skincare routine. Keep reading as we reveal everything there is to know about face oils, from their multitude of benefits that moisturisers and serums alone may not provide, to the best ones for your skin type. Whether your skin is dry, oily, sensitive, or mature, there's a face oil out there for you! Firstly, exactly what are face oils? Face oils are typically formulated with botanical and essential oils as well as plant extracts and antioxidants. They are designed to soften, nourish and balance your complexion, locking in hydration and providing skin with the additional moisture it needs for a truly glowing complexion. Non-comedogenic, they won’t clog pores and cause breakouts either! Why use a face oil Adding a face oil to your skincare routine can be a transformative step towards achieving healthier, more radiant skin. Face oils are packed with nourishing ingredients that penetrate deeply into the skin, providing intense hydration and locking in moisture. They can help balance oil production, making them suitable for various skin types, including oily and acne-prone skin. Face oils also contain antioxidants that combat free radicals, reducing signs of aging like fine lines and wrinkles. Whether used alone or mixed with your moisturiser or foundation, face oils will leave your skin feeling soft, supple, and glowing. The Benefits of Face Oils Adding a face oil to your skincare routine can be beneficial for several reasons Deep Hydration Face oils are incredible for deep hydration. Unlike moisturisers that may evaporate quickly, or often sit on the surface of your skin, oils penetrate deeply into the skin, locking in moisture and keeping your skin soft and supple. Enhanced Skin Barrier Our skin barrier is essential for keeping out pollutants and retaining moisture. Face oils contain essential fatty acids that strengthen this barrier, making your skin more resilient and less prone to irritation. Rich in Antioxidants Many face oils are packed with antioxidants, which help combat free radicals and prevent premature aging. Oils like argan are rich in vitamins A and E, promoting skin elasticity and reducing fine lines. Skin plumping In your 40s wrinkles can start to look more obvious because the skin’s natural oils decrease, the moisture barrier breaks down, and the skin dries out. Because oils are lipophilic, or fat loving, they pass through the lipid layer of the skin faster, preventing water loss and plumping skin with moisture more effectively. Balancing Properties It might seem counterintuitive, but oils can help balance oily and acne-prone skin. Oils like tea tree and grapeseed have antimicrobial properties and can regulate sebum production, reducing breakouts and giving you a clearer complexion. Soothing and Calming For those with sensitive or irritated skin, oils such as chamomile and calendula can provide soothing relief. Their anti-inflammatory properties help reduce redness and calm irritated skin, promoting a more even and calm complexion. The best oil for your skin type The most nurturing oil for sensitive skin Naturys Sensitive Hydra Oil If you suffer from sensitive skin and are prone to redness and irritation, this oil really can help transform your complexion! Its deeply nurturing formulation of blueberry oil, bisabolol, and lycopene, not only soothes skin and calms redness, but it also nourishes and protects skin from environmental and blue light damage! “I love this oil, it’s really helped my sensitive skin. Its dewy texture, combining all the comfort of an oil and the effectiveness of a serum, envelops the skin in light and delivers intense hydration. Day after day your skin will become more radiant and dark spots will diminish and fine lines smoothed away! Sound good? “This is a beautiful product. With its incredible scent and silky texture, it leaves skin feeling ultra soft and hydrated. Its great for my combination skin. I use this product in the morning before my Lumafirm Repair Cream. My skin has never looked better. The De-Stress Escape Oil is my new favourite product!” Anne When to use a face oil It’s best to incorporate your facial oils in the night-time skincare routine, as when kept overnight, skin can best absorb the oil, which in turn helps to nurture and repair the cells. However, you can also add it to your foundation or moisturiser especially during the winter to get an extra level of nourishment. Myths About Face Oils Oils Will Make My Skin Oily: The right oil can actually help balance oil production and reduce greasiness. Oils Cause Breakouts: Non-comedogenic oils are designed not to clog pores and can actually help prevent acne. Oils Are Only for Dry Skin: There’s a suitable oil for every skin type, each offering unique benefits. Face oils are a powerful addition to any skincare routine, providing hydration, protection, and nourishment. Whether you are looking to hydrate, balance or rejuvenate your complexion, with the right oil tailored to your skin type, you can achieve a healthier, more radiant skin.

12 beauty tips these celebrities swear by

12 beauty tips these celebrities swear by

by Jo Boyden on May 18 2024
Ever wondered how your favourite celebrities manage to defy the ageing process and maintain their flawless complexion year after year? While genetics may play a role, the secrets to their youthful, glowing skin often lie in carefully curated skincare routines and expert advice passed down from generation to generation. From A-list actors to supermodels gracing the runway, keep reading as we uncover the top beauty tips these celebrities swear by, 12 simple strategies you and I are already likely doing daily, just not religiously like them! Do not skimp on the amount of water you drink "I swear by hydration. Drinking plenty of water keeps my skin looking plump and youthful." - Jennifer Aniston Keeping yourself hydrated both inside and out is one of the most essential tips when it comes to your skin. This is because water is vital for maintaining skin health and youthfulness. It hydrates the skin from within promoting elasticity and plumpness while reducing the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines. Hydration also supports skin cell function, collagen production, and repair processes. Additionally, water helps flush out toxins, preventing breakouts and promoting clear skin. By strengthening the skin's natural barrier, water protects against environmental damage and maintains an even skin tone. Ultimately, staying hydrated is essential for preserving the youthful appearance and vitality of our skin! Try to drink a minimum of 8 glasses of water a day and for that much needed added nourishment make sure you always moisturise morning and night! We recommend using formulations rich in hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid attracts and retains moisture, plumping and hydrating the skin. In fact the molecules can hold 1,000 times its weight in water! This helps to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, leaving the skin smooth, supple, and youthful. We are obsessed with the Pevonia Hyaluronic Acid Hydra Serum and Hyaluronic acid Hydra Mist! Do things every day that will help you de-stress “I think that anything you can do to remove stress will give you a better glow. That’s the number one answer…" Cate Blanchett Stress is an inevitable part of life, but its impact doesn’t just affect our mood, it can significantly affect the health and appearance ofour skin too! Stress triggers the release of cortisol, a hormone that can throw our skin out of whack. It can cause the increase of oil production, leading to clogged pores and breakouts. It also has the ability tobreak down collagen and elastin, causing wrinkles and sagging. Plus, stress can make skin conditions like eczema and psoriasis flare up, making our skin red, itchy, and inflamed. All these things combined can leave our complexion looking dull and tired, far from the youthful glow so many celebrities promote! That's why it's important to find ways to de-stress and take care of our skin. Whether it's through deep breathing, yoga, meditation, listening to music, or simply some self-care time, giving ourselves a break can help keep our skin looking its glowing best! Eat a diet rich in Antioxidants “I eat lots of berries; they’re full of antioxidants" - Olivia Palermo Antioxidants can do wonders for our skin! And it’s true, a rich source comes from berries! Antioxidants help fight off free radicals, which are harmful molecules that can damage our skin cells and accelerate ageing. Berries like blueberries, strawberries, and raspberries are packed with antioxidants like vitamin C and polyphenols, which can help protect our skin from environmental damage, reduce inflammation, and promote a brighter, more youthful complexion. Incorporating these colourful fruits into our diet can nourish our skin from the inside out, leaving it looking radiant and healthy. We also love antioxidant rich skincare too! Here are three of our favourites; Naturys Anti-Age Antioxidant Facial Toner, Pevonia Vitamin C Complex and Pevonia’s Micro-Retinol Essential Moisturiser Always remove makeup before bed! "I've never gone to bed without washing my face. Never in my life. Even if I'm sick, tired — heck, even if I was drunk! I might forget to take off the dress, the shoes, and the jewellery, but not the makeup. It's second nature." - Salma Hayek Not washing your face before bed can have detrimental effects on your skin. Throughout the day, dirt, oil, and environmental pollutants accumulate on our skin's surface, clogging pores and leading to breakouts. By neglecting to cleanse your face at night, these impurities remain trapped, causing inflammation and acne. Additionally, makeup left on overnight can further exacerbate these issues, as it can mix with sweat and bacteria, increasing the risk of infections and irritation. Not cleansing your face before bed also disrupts the skin's natural renewal process, hindering its ability to repair and regenerate overnight! This can result in dullness and premature ageing! So, no matter how tired or tipsy you might be, get cleansing before hitting the hay! For hassle free cleansing use an all-rounder makeup remover like Phytomer’s Doux Contour Eye and Lip Waterproof Makeup Remover. It’s a fantastic and effectively melts away makeup and grime with minimum effort! Combining the effectiveness of an oil (a trio of oils in fact) and the gentleness of a lotion, this ultra-hydrating makeup remover, eradicates even the most stubborn of lips and eye makeup fast! Always wear sunscreen "Sunscreen, every single day, rain or shine. It's the best anti-ageing product out there." - Priyanka Chopra And we 100% agree! Sunscreen is hands down the no.1 defence against premature ageing! The harmful UV rays from the sun can cause a multitude of skin issues, including wrinkles, fine lines, sunspots, and sagging skin. By wearing sunscreen daily, you can protect your skin from these damaging effects and prevent premature ageing. UV radiation damages the skin's collagen and elastin fibres, leading to loss of elasticity and firmness, which are key contributors to aging skin. Additionally, UV exposure can result in hyperpigmentation, uneven skin tone, and the formation of wrinkles and fine lines. Using a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher helps shield the skin from both UVA and UVB rays, which are responsible for different types of damage. UVA rays penetrate deep into the skin and contribute to premature aging, while UVB rays primarily cause sunburns. Consistently wearing sunscreen, even on cloudy days or during the winter months, is essential for maintaining youthful-looking skin and protecting against the harmful effects of UV radiation. Incorporating sunscreen into your daily skincare routine is one of the best ways to prevent premature aging and maintain healthy, radiant skin for years to come. We love Medicalia – Sunscreen SPF 40 with Blue Light Shield. You might be a little reluctant to wear your sunscreen dailybecause quite frankly its smell and greasy texture puts you off, but that’s because you haven’t found a sunscreen that works for you! This one I promise you are going to love! It’s perfectly lightweight and does not leave a white case or greasy residue behind! It contains an exclusive mineral formula to shield skin from harmful sun rays, blue light damage and pollution! And what’s more, the formula is reef-safe and works for all skin types and tones too! Use eye cream daily “Never skip eye cream. It’s my secret weapon against fine lines and puffiness.” Sandra Bullock Your eyes are the most delicate area on your face and the first area to really age you! A good eye cream really can be game-changing when it comes to the pursuit of longer lasting youthful skin! Exfoliation is key “I start every day by exfoliating my face, something I’ve done for the past 40 years. I feel like it’s really contributed to my skin feeling fresh and smooth. Forty years ago, I read an article that said men always look five years younger than women who are their same age. They contributed that to them shaving every day, and the daily exfoliating with shaving making their skin look younger. I was like, I’m not going to let them get away with that!" Christie Brinkley Exfoliation is definitely key when it comes to skin looking younger! After all exfoliation promotes cell turnover, improving skin texture, and enhancing radiance. It also unclogs pores preventing breakouts while helping other products in your skincare routine absorb more effectively into skin. Just remember not every skin type can tolerate daily exfoliation and it depends on the exfoliator you use too! Its best to start slowly by exfoliating once or twice a week and if skin tends to be a little sensitive opt for fruit enzyme exfoliators which won’t irritate skin. Over-exfoliating or using harsh scrubs can strip the skin of its natural oils and lead to inflammation, redness, and sensitivity. Try incorporating facial massage into your daily skincare routine “Facial massages to boost blood flow and keep your skin looking fresh.” - Julia Roberts We couldn’t agree more! Facial massage offers a multitude of benefits for the skin, we just need to find the time to incorporate it into our day! Firstly, facial massage promotes improved circulation, delivering oxygen and essential nutrients to the skin while removing toxins. This enhanced blood flow results in a brighter, more radiant complexion, as well as improved skin tone and texture! Facial massage also stimulates the lymphatic syst
Peptides

Peptides: How this ingredient is transforming skincare

by Jo Boyden on May 03 2024
You’ve probably heard about Peptides, another key ingredient we are told to incorporate into our everyday skincare routine! But when we are already slathering on Vitamin C, Retinol, Collagen, Niacinamide (and more!) in our quest to defy premature ageing and achieve healthy, glowing skin, why are peptides so essential too? Keep reading as we uncover all there is to know about peptides and how these unsung heroes can help to transform your complexion. Firstly though, what are peptides?Hailed as the key to achieving, youthful, radiant skin, peptides are short chains of amino acids, the building blocks of proteins, including collagen, elastin and keratin, crucial for maintaining skin structure and elasticity. What do peptides do for your skin? These small but mighty molecules are gaining recognition for their remarkable ability to address various signs of ageing, making them a coveted ingredient in skincare formulations. As we age, our production of collagen, elastin and keratin decline, leading to fine lines, wrinkles and sagging skin. Peptides work by signalling the skin to produce more of these proteins replenishing what’s lost and in turn helping to restore a more youthful complexion! Clever stuff hey?Key benefits of peptides in skincare: Peptides boost collagen production Peptides stimulate collagen synthesis, promoting firmer, plumper skin and reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Peptides enhance skin elasticity By supporting elastin production, peptides help improve skin elasticity, leading to a smoother and more youthful-looking complexion. Peptides improve skin texture Peptides can help refine skin texture, minimizing the appearance of pores and promoting a smoother, more even skin tone. Peptides hydrate and nourish Some peptides have moisturising properties, helping to hydrate the skin and maintain its barrier function, preventing moisture loss and enhancing overall skin health. Peptides protect against environmental damage Certain peptides have antioxidant properties, defending the skin against free radicals and environmental stressors, which can accelerate skin ageing. How to incorporate peptides into your skincare routineLook for skincare products containing peptides, such as serums, moisturisers, and eye creams. These products are formulated to deliver peptides directly to the skin, maximizing their effectiveness. Incorporate them into your daily skincare routine, applying them after cleansing and toning, and before moisturising. Consistency is key to seeing visible results, so use peptide-rich products regularly to reap their full benefits. Can you layer peptides with vitamin c and other key ingredients?Overall, peptides work well with other key skincare ingredients including vitamin c, niacinamide, retinol, antioxidants and hyaluronic acid, and can generally be layered with them to address multiple skin concerns and achieve optimal results. However, layering peptides with AHAs (alpha hydroxy acids) is not advisable as the AHAs will actually make the peptides work less efficiently. Are peptides good for all skin types including sensitive skin?Peptides can be beneficial for all skin types, including sensitive skin, when used in appropriate formulations and concentrations. Since peptides are generally gentle and well-tolerated by most skin types, they are less likely to cause irritation or sensitivity reactions. Peptides can offer valuable benefits for sensitive skin, such as improving hydration, enhancing skin barrier function, and promoting a more youthful complexion. However, it's essential to choose peptide products that are specifically formulated for sensitive skin and free from potential irritants such as fragrances, dyes, and harsh preservatives. The peptide skincare products we are loving:Naturys Anti-Age Multi-Peptide Serum - Formulated with hyaluronic acid, this product packs a punch when it comes to hydration but thanks to its additional combination of nourishing and anti-ageing ingredients including an array of peptides and vitamin C, it leaves your skin softer, smoother and visibly radiant too. sagging skin

Worried about sagging skin? The best tips to firm your face

by Jo Boyden on May 03 2024
Ageing. We all know it’s inevitable, but no one wants to wake up one day and find gravity playing tricks on their face! Sadly though, sagging skin, fine lines and wrinkles are all a natural part of the ageing process, but this doesn't mean we can’t do something to help slow down or improve their appearance. With the right preventive measures and skincare routine, you can prevent your skin from sagging prematurely and maintain firm and youthful-looking skin for years to come. Keep reading as we discuss the best tips for preventing sagging skin and achieving a more lifted, toned complexion. Firstly though what is sagging skin on the face?Sagging skin on the face refers to the loss of firmness and elasticity in the skin, leading to a drooping or sagging appearance. It occurs when the skin's supportive structures weaken over time. As a result, the skin loses its ability to bounce back, causing it to sag or droop, particularly in areas such as the cheeks, jawline, and neck. What causes sagging skin? You could be asking yourself why is your face suddenly sagging? Sagging skin on the face is actually caused by multiple factors. These include; Loss of Collagen and Elastin One of the main contributors to skin sagging is the decrease in the production of collagen and elastin, responsible for skin elasticity and firmness. As we age, our collagen and elastin levels decline and as a result the skin loses its ability to bounce back, resulting in sagging and drooping.Decreased skin hydrationHydration plays a crucial role in maintaining the plumpness and suppleness of the skin. With age, the skin's ability to retain moisture diminishes, resulting in dryness and dehydration. Dehydrated skin is more prone to sagging and wrinkles, as it lacks the necessary moisture to maintain its elasticity.Reduction in Facial Fat and Muscle ToneAs we age, the fat pads in our face begin to weaken, causing the skin to lose volume and support. Additionally, weakening of the facial muscles over time can contribute to sagging and drooping of facial tissues. These changes in fat distribution and muscle tone can result in a loss of facial contour and definition.UV and Blue Light damageProlonged exposure to UV rays from the sun and Blue Light damage from our devices accelerates the breakdown of collagen and elastin fibres in the skin. UV and Blue Light damage weakens the skin's structural support, leading to premature ageing signs such as sagging, wrinkles, and fine lines.Lifestyle FactorsCertain lifestyle habits, such as smoking, poor nutrition, and excessive alcohol consumption, can contribute to the breakdown of collagen and elastin in the skin. Smoking, in particular, has been linked to accelerated skin ageing and sagging due to its detrimental effects on blood circulation and oxygen delivery to the skin tissues.GeneticsThis one you can blame on your parents for! Unfortunately genetics can also influence the rate at which our skin ages and how saggy it becomes! Sadly some of us will develop sagging skin much earlier than others due to our genetic makeup! Eek. How to prevent sagging skinWhile some degree of face sagging is a natural part of the ageing process, there are various things we can do to help improve skin firmness and minimize the appearance of sagging skin. Stay Hydrated Hydration is key to maintaining the elasticity and suppleness of our skin. It’s nothing new but drinking plenty of water throughout the day to keep your skin hydrated from the inside out is essential. Water helps keep your skin cells plump and hydrated which in turn promotes elasticity. Additionally, use hydrating skincare products containing ingredients like hyaluronic acid to lock in moisture and plump up the skin. Always wear sunscreen Protecting our skin from UV rays and Blue Light damage with sunscreen and sun-protective measures can dramatically help prevent premature ageing and in turn sagging skin. Wear sunscreen with a high SPF every. single. day no matter what the weather, always consider wearing a hat and seek shade during peak hours when UV is at its most damaging. Follow a Healthy Diet Eating a balanced diet rich in antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals can support skin health and prevent sagging. Include plenty of fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and healthy fats in your diet to provide your skin with essential nutrients and promote collagen production. Including foods such as broccoli, spinach, sweet potato, avocado, nuts and blueberries will work wonders!! Exercise Regularly Regular exercise not only helps maintain a healthy weight but also helps keep sagging skin at bay! This is because it promotes circulation and muscle tone, which can contribute to firmer, more lifted skin. Incorporate strength training exercises targeting the face, neck, and body to keep your muscles toned and prevent sagging. Practice Good Skincare Habits Follow a consistent skincare routine that includes cleansing, exfoliating and moisturising, this will keep skin supple and looking younger for longer. Use Skincare Products with Active Ingredients As well as products formulated with Hyaluronic acid, you’ll want to use skincare containing active ingredients known for their firming and tightening properties. The most effective ingredients to help prevent premature skin sagging includes retinol, peptides, vitamin C, and niacinamide. These ingredients can help stimulate collagen production, improve skin elasticity, and reduce the appearance of sagging. Incorporate facial massage into your daily routine Gentle facial massage techniques can help improve circulation and lymphatic drainage, promoting firmer, glowy and more lifted skin over time. Because it stimulates the facial muscles, a massage is like a mini-workout for your face. It engorges the muscles with blood to oxygenate the skin cells and gives “tone” to your muscles.Incorporate a gentle facial massage using your fingertips or a jade roller into your daily skincare routine. To learn more about the many benefits of facial massage click here Get enough zzzz’s We all know that getting enough sleep is important for our overall health, but did you know it can also improve your skin’s elasticity? Skin Cycling: What is it and how will it improve your skin?

by Jo Boyden on Apr 19 2024
Ever wondered how some people seem to effortlessly maintain glowing, radiant skin? Well the answer could be due to skin cycling, a skincare concept that has gained huge popularity over recent months and for very good reason, after all skin cycling has the ability to transform your skin in a short period of time! If you aren’t familiar with skin cycling, you’re probably wondering how this is so, and what it even is! Keep reading as we reveal all there is to know about this skincare trend and how it may help improve your complexion too! What is skin cycling? Skin cycling is a strategic approach to your skincare routine that aims to improve results while minimising irritation. It involves alternating between using active ingredients and nourishing ingredients. Instead of bombarding your skin by applying active ingredients every single night, you cycle through them over a four-night period, enabling your skin to rest for a few nights. How does skin cycling work? While there are plenty of variations to skin cycling, a typical skin cycle lasts for four days - two days “on” (otherwise known as “active nights” using active ingredients) and two days “off” (otherwise known as “rest nights” using nourishing ingredients). The theory behind this particular trend is to give the skin a break from products such asexfoliants and retinols which can be harsh or stripping if used consecutively over a period of time. Your classic skin cycling routine The skin cycling rotation begins with exfoliation on the first night(preferably with a chemical exfoliant like lactic acid or glycolic acid), followed by retinol on the second. The third and fourth nights are dedicated to recovery with skin barrier-protecting serums and moisturisers to nurture and hydrate the skin. Then, the cycle repeats.By alternating between active and rest nights, you allow your skin to repair itself and avoid overloading it with too many actives at once. The result? Better results without the irritation! Why Skin Cycling? With so many products out there from cleansers and exfoliators to serums, oils and more, (and let’s not forget the game-changing ingredients we all need to look out for in our skincare) it’s easy to overload our skin. So many of us will layer multiple ingredients night after night without considering recovery. Skin Cycling prevents this. Using specific products on different days regenerates the skin and improves skin quality. Who will benefit from skin cycling? Anyone can! If you aren’t getting the results you want out of your skincare routine despite using products with the best skincare ingredients, skin cycling could be for you! Or ff you suffer from skin irritation, skin cycling can work wonders! It prevents you overloading your skin with multiple active ingredients day after day. By avoiding overloading the skin you’ll maintain its health, balance, and overall well-being. Remember overloading the skin with excessive skincare products and ingredients can lead to skin issues or exacerbate an already existing condition! Firstly, it can disrupt the skin barrier, compromising its ability to retain moisture and protect against external aggressors. This disruption may result in increased sensitivity, irritation, and dryness. Furthermore, overloading the skin can clog pores and contribute to acne breakouts, particularly if heavy or occlusive products are used. Finally, layering too many products may interfere with the absorption and efficacy of active ingredients, leading to diminished results. Simplifying your skincare routine can help streamline your regimen and ensure that each product effectively addresses your skin's needs. The best products to use for skin cycling?Since skin cycling is all about exfoliation and retinol followed by repair and nourishment, these are the products we would highly recommend:Days 1 & 2Vie Collection Cleansing Gel with Glycolic, Lactic and Salicylic Acids – This foaming cleansing gel combines glycolic, lactic and salicylic acids to stimulate cellular activity, break the intercellular glue between dead cells and thoroughly cleanse skin.Pevonia Renewing Glycocides Cream - Combining glycolic acid with hydration hero hyaluronic acid, this treatment cream works to dissolve dead skin cells, improving skin texture and diminishing fine lines too!
