The best tinted sunscreen for a natural, no-makeup look

by Jo Boyden on Mar 10 2026
Who doesn’t love makeup? Especially on those days when our skin is feeling a little meh and a good foundation can feel like a total saving grace. But sometimes we just don’t feel like wearing a full face, or the foundation we love can feel like a little too much! Cue tinted sunscreen or skin tint foundation (with SPF!) These clever multi-taskers blur imperfections, add a healthy, natural glow and protect skin in one simple step! Exactly what the new ELES Mineral Glow Skin Tint SPF 15 was designed to do! If you haven’t heard of it yet, consider this your official introduction to what could be your new makeup favourite (it certainly is now mine!) It’s not quite a foundation, and it’s far more than just a tinted moisturiser. Instead, it’s a mineral-infused skin tint created for those days when you want your skin to look like your skin, just a much more rested, radiant and flawless version!   Firstly though, why choose a tinted foundation with SPF you might be asking? We all know we should be wearing sunscreen every single day, but the routine of layering moisturiser, SPF, and then makeup can sometimes feel like a lot especially if you are time poor! A tinted sunscreen or tint with SPF changes the game completely. You're streamlining your morning routine, protecting your skin, and still walking out the door looking fresh, polished and glowy. It's the ultimate beauty multi-tasker!   Why we love the ELES Mineral Glow Skin Tint SPF 15 Beyond its everyday mineral SPF 15 protection, the first thing you’ll notice about the ELES Mineral Glow Skin Tint is the texture! It’s lightweight and silky and glides on like a dream. It doesn't "mask" your face, instead, it blurs imperfections and softens the look of pores while letting your real skin shine through. It also has the most gorgeous subtle uplifting citrus scent too thanks to its blend of blood orange, grapefruit, lime and lemon essential oils, which makes applying it feel like a little morning mood boost. What really sets this tinted sunscreen apart however, is how many skincare ingredients are built into the formula! A blend of botanical extracts including pomegranate, sea buckthorn, kiwi seed and cucumber helps revitalise and brighten the skin, while antioxidant ingredients help defend against environmental stress. Meanwhile calming extracts like green tea and marigold help soothe and support the skin barrier, while hyaluronic acid delivers long-lasting hydration and plumping benefits. The result is makeup that doesn’t just look good, it actually helps support healthier skin. Why it’s perfect for no‑makeup makeup days 1. Sheer, buildable coverage that still looks like skin No‑makeup makeup is all about restraint. You want enough coverage to feel confident, but not so much that it looks like a full base! The Mineral Glow Skin Tint provides light‑medium when you build it up where you need it (around the nose, a bit on the chin, over redness) and you can easily apply it with fingers or a sponge, blend it in like a moisturiser, and be done. It’s that easy! 2. Hydration and glow in one step Dry, tired skin is the fastest way to ruin a no‑makeup makeup look. This tint is packed with skin‑loving and skin plumping hydrators including squalane, glycerin and of course hyaluronic acid so your glow isn’t just from pigment, it’s from genuine hydration. The result? Skin that looks fresh and naturally dewy, not flat or powdery! 3. Calming, soothing and kind to sensitive skin If your skin flares up, flushes easily or just doesn’t like heavy formulas, this is a very gentle option. It’s been formulated for all skin types, including sensitive or easily irritated. The green tea and marigold extracts in the formulation help soothe redness and protect against environmental stress which allantoin helps comfort and support compromised or reactive skin 4. Mineral SPF 15 built in As mentioned, sun protection is non‑negotiable, even on rainy, cloudy or in the office all day, days! Titanium dioxide provides gentle mineral SPF 15 protection which is ideal for sensitive or easily irritated skin. 5. Antioxidant glow from botanicals This isn’t just a tint with SPF, it’s skincare with serious antioxidant support! Ingredients like pomegranate and sea buckthorn help brighten, nourish and support more radiant, even toned skin while the kiwi seed and cucumber refresh, soothe and de‑puff tired, dull complexions. Worn daily, you’re not only faking good skin, you’re gradually supporting it to look better bare as well! To use it Simply apply after your morning skincare (and sunscreen if you're in high UV! Remember, SPF 15 is a great everyday shield, but you may want a higher SPF on beach days). Use your fingertips for the most natural finish, a brush for more coverage, or a damp sponge for that seamless, skin-like look. One layer gives you that effortless 'my skin but better' finish. Build it up on areas you want a little more coverage (around the nose, any redness, blemishes) and you've got a look that's polished without being heavy. It also works beautifully for professional application, so if you're a therapist or makeup artist, this one's a brilliant addition to your kit! Add a touch of concealer, a little mascara and lip balm and your fresh, glowing everyday “no-makeup, makeup” look is complete!   If you are over foundations that appear to settle into your fine lines, your skin feels dull and dehydrated, or perhaps it’s on the more sensitive side? Or maybe you are looking for a makeup base that acts like skincare packed with the latest and greatest ingredients, you’ll love ELES Mineral Glow Skin Tint SPF 15 And if you’ve ever wished your sunscreen looked more like your favourite foundation and your foundation behaved more like skincare, this one is for you!
How to treat sun-damaged skin: Expert solutions that work

How to treat sun-damaged skin: Expert solutions that work

by Jo Boyden on Dec 24 2025
We all want that gorgeously glowing skin synonymous with the sizzling summer months but sadly said glowing summer skin can come at a cost! Even with sunscreen, UV exposure can compromise the skin barrier and accelerate visible ageing! We are talking pigmentation and dehydration to loss of firmness and uneven texture! And sun damage can show up long after summer ends too! The good news? With the right approach and clinically proven skincare, sun-damaged skin can be soothed, repaired, and visibly restored. Keep reading as we count down 10 expert solutions that really do work!    Firstly, what sun damage really does to the skin Sun damage isn’t just about visible redness or peeling. UV exposure affects the skin on multiple levels, leading to dehydration and compromised barrier function, pigmentation and uneven skin tone, breakdown of collagen and elastin and accelerated signs of ageing, including fine lines and loss of firmness! Effective treatment focuses on soothing inflammation, repairing cellular damage, replenishing hydration, and preventing further UV stress.   Our expert solutions Pevonia Phyto Aromatic Mist This soothing and calming facial mist isn’t just the perfect post-sun products, it’s also the perfect pick-me-up to pack in your bag when on the go! I love the Phytomer sunscreens (as do my kids!) They are lightweight, easy to apply, feel comfortable on the skin (not at all thick, greasy or with that awful white cast) and the thing I love about this particular sunscreen is the fact it protects and resets your skin!” – Adele S Pevonia’s “C” Complex with Oxyzomes To help counteract sun damage, it is important to not only prioritise SPF but Vitamin C too (the must-have treatment for dark spots!)Vitamin C when applied topically not only boosts our skin’s natural tolerance to the sun, but it is able to help control the formation of pigmentation as well as significantly lightening its appearance too! I personally can’t speak more highly of Pevonia’s “C” Complex with Oxyzomes. The citrus scent is divine and just two pumps equals radiant looking skin instantaneously. Oh, and it feels a-mazing too thanks to its combination of vitamin c and hydrating dynamo hyaluronic which quite literally drenches skin with repairing antioxidants. The biggest skincare trends to watch in 2026

The biggest skincare trends to watch in 2026

by Jo Boyden on Dec 24 2025
From countless ingredients to multi-step routines, we know skincare can be somewhat overwhelming! Well, 2026 has good news for you! This coming year skincare becomes smarter, simpler, and more intentional. The focus is on longevity-driven formulas, barrier support, and bio-intelligent skincare, delivering fewer steps with more meaningful results! It’s a refreshingly practical approach that puts skin health first! No more chasing quick fixes or viral trends. Read on to find out the skincare trends the experts predict will be big!   1. Exosome-infused products If 2025 was the year of skin boosters, 2026 is all about exosomes. These microscopic messengers, released by stem cells, carry growth factors, peptides, and genetic material that help skin cells “talk” to each other. Applied topically, they supercharge regeneration, boost collagen production, and accelerate recovery. Expect exosome serums to dominate, a true shift toward results-driven skincare that prioritises tolerance, performance, and long-term skin health. 2. Skinimalism 2.0 Skinimalism isn’t going anywhere, but in 2026 it isn’t about owning fewer products to declutter your bathroom. This year it’s all about using fewer products to protect your skin’s biology. We are talking smarter skincare formulations that protect the skin microbiome, reduce inflammation and support long-term skin resilience. Think nourishing face oils, hybrid moisturisers, and serums that deliver multiple benefits in one. Simple routines, smarter formulas, maximum impact. 3. Bio-intelligent skincare 2026 will see beauty and wellness come together like never before. Bio-intelligent skincare goes beyond surface-level results to focus on cellular health, energy optimisation, and skin function. These advanced formulas help your skin perform better under stress, rather than just masking symptoms. Concepts like “metabolic beauty” are set to reshape routines, giving consumers personalised, science-backed solutions that really work.  4. Sustainable, transparent and “Blue Beauty” formulations Sustainability continues to define the future of skincare. “Blue Beauty”, focused on marine ecosystem-friendly sourcing, waste-reducing packaging, and ethical formulations is becoming a standard. Expect more refillable, biodegradable, and waterless products, alongside full ingredient transparency. Beauty that looks good on you and the planet is officially non-negotiable. 5. Prejuvenation Why wait for signs of ageing when you can prevent them? Prejuvenation is all about early intervention. Think consistent SPF, antioxidant-rich formulas, and ingredients that protect collagen and fight oxidative stress, before wrinkles, dullness, or sagging appear. 2026 celebrates skincare that works proactively, not reactively. 6. Personalisation & tech integration 2026 takes personalised beauty to the next level. With AI tools, skin diagnostics, and adaptive formulas, products will be tailored to your unique biology, environment, and lifestyle. From smart apps to wearable devices, consumers can expect fully custom skincare routines that actually understand their skin, making every product personal, precise, and performance driven.   From cutting-edge science to sustainable formulations, 2026 promises a new era of skincare that’s as intelligent as it is indulgent!

These are the tried‑and‑true favourites loved not only by our customers but also by our own team here at BC! From glow-boosting serums and skin-repairing treatments to complexion-perfecting essentials, keep reading to discover why these bestsellers truly deserve the hype!   The cleanser Phytomer Souffle Marin Cleansing Foaming Cream This beautiful cleanser has been flying off our shelves all year, and honestly? We get it. If your skin ever feels a bit “meh” at the end of the day, this cleanser is the reset button you’ll love! It’s a soft, creamy foam that melts away makeup, pollution, and daily grime without stripping your skin (which we all know many cleansers can do!) It’s formulated with marine ingredients including Oligomer®, which delivers 100% pure seawater concentrate packed with 72 minerals and trace elements that remineralize and energise your skin while you cleanse! Think of it as a breath of fresh ocean air for your face! Leaving your complexion clean, soft, and beautifully refreshed. “This is an excellent cleanser for my skin that is normal to oily in the warmer summer months. It has a mild exfoliant in it, lactic acid, that helps keep my pores purified. I am very happy with it.” - Brianna RS2 Rosacea Gentle Cleanser If your skin freaks out at basically everything, you might have been one of the many to have this outstanding cleanser as your saviour this year. The RS2 range is specifically formulated for rosacea-prone and ultra-sensitive skin, and this cleanser is gentle enough for the most reactive complexions while still actually cleaning your face (a surprisingly rare combo!). The formula features chamomile and green tea extra to calm inflammation and reduce redness, while french rose oil nourishes without triggering sensitivity. What makes it brilliant is what's NOT in it—no harsh sulfates, no fragrance, no essential oils that can irritate delicate skin. It's just pure, gentle cleansing that respects your skin's compromised barrier while supporting its natural healing process. Customer reviews consistently mention how it's the first cleanser that doesn't make their skin angry, which is basically the dream for sensitive skin sufferers. “Amazing Cleanser! I’ve been using this for over a year now to relieve my severe Rosacea (pustules and dry red itchy skin across my nose and cheeks) can’t believe the difference in my skin I’ve tried so many different products this has been a game changer highly recommend anyone who has Rosacea ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️” - Linda Andrews  The gentle exfoliator Pevonia Gentle Exfoliating Cleanser This exfoliator is so brilliant and gentle, it’s the ultimate for all skin types! The exfoliator for people who thought they couldn't use exfoliators! It's a 2-in-1 that cleanses AND gently buffs away dead skin cells without any harsh scrubbing or irritation. The secret? Natural jojoba beads provide physical exfoliation (they're perfectly round so they won't create micro-tears like some scrubs) for that soft, supple smoothness! Chamomile, safflower seed oil, aloe and calendula keep things soothed, calm and hydrated, so you're never left with that tight, over-exfoliated feeling. Use it 1-3 times weekly (dependant on your needs) and watch your skin transform from dull and congested to smooth and glowing. It's been a consistent bestseller because it delivers professional-grade exfoliation results! “This is the BEST gentle exfoliator I have ever used. I have been using Pevonia for 5 years plus. I have sensitive skin and this exfoliator is perfect for my skin type. HIGHLY recommend.” - Annalisa Robinson  The serums Pevonia C Complexe with Oxyzomes This is one of those “if you know, you know” products, a cult favourite for a reason! The Oxyzomes technology is what sets this serum apart from the millions of others. Oxyzomes are specialized micro-carriers that deliver stabilized vitamin C deep into your skin while simultaneously boosting cellular oxygenation (hence the "oxy" in Oxyzomes). You're getting powerful brightening, collagen-boosting, and antioxidant protection without the irritation that plagues so many vitamin C formulas. The result? Brighter skin, improved firmness, and a noticeable boost in radiance. It’s also fantastic for protecting against environmental stressors, making it a must‑have for anyone serious about anti‑ageing and glow. Customers rave about how it brightens dark spots, evens skin tone, and gives that healthy, lit-from-within glow without any stinging or redness. “This serum has the ability to make my skin brighter and smoother as soon as I put it on and it just gets better and better the more I use it. I tend to have sensitive skin with it becoming drier during the cooler months. This serum is the perfect solution and sits easily under my daily moisturiser.” – Lene Hubislab Premium Active B-tol Ampoule A new one to the top-sellers list this Korean skincare ampoule is like a skin‑smoothing powerhouse in a tiny bottle! Powerful It’s formulated with Botox-like peptides acmella oleracea extract, and hyaluronic acid (3 types to be specific!) to quite literally mimic the results of botox…naturally! The texture is this beautiful, silky essence that absorbs instantly and layers perfectly under other products. People love it because it delivers serious anti-aging results, visibly smoother texture, reduced fine lines, more even tone. “I have been using this product for a number of weeks now and I LOVE it! My skin already looks smoother and younger. If you are looking for a deeply nourishing and soothing serum to help with fine lines and wrinkles give this a try! You will not be disappointed.” – Sally M Naturys Multi-Peptide Serum If you’re chasing firmer, smoother, more youthful‑looking skin, peptides are your best friend, and this serum is packed with them. It combines multiple bioactive peptides with hydrating ingredients like hyaluronic acid to boost collagen, improve elasticity, and soften fine lines. In fact, it is Pevonia’s global best-selling cream! It’s beautifully rich, but not heavy! And is packed with anti-ageing essentials including of course marine collagen, hyaluronic acid, squalane and vitamin e to deeply hydrate while helping firm and smooth the complexion. It’s ideal for anyone noticing early signs of ageing, think fine lines, dehydration, or loss of bounce. “There is a reason that this cream is a best seller. I have found no better moisturiser for my skin. My skin can get a bit red with some moisturisers but not with the Pevonia Marine Collagen Cream. it really is a beautiful cream to apply and leaves skin soft and supple. Highly recommended.” – Lisa Parkes Phytomer Hydra Continue Radiance Energizing Cream If you prefer something a little lighter (but still just as nourishing) this is the cream for you! It’s perfect for people who want hydration without heaviness and glow without grease! The "continue" in the name refers to continuous hydration as this cream quite literally keeps your skin moisturised for hours! It’s formulated with marine-sourced vitamins and minerals including Oligomer® seawater complex that energizes tired, dull skin at the cellular level. What makes it special is how it manages to be lightweight and fast-absorbing while still delivering serious moisture and radiance. It's that rare day cream that works beautifully under makeup, never pills, and genuinely makes your skin look more awake and glowing. Perfect as an everyday moisturiser for normal to dehydrated skin that wants both comfort and glow in one step! “I am in love with this product, it’s become my go-to moisturiser this summer since it’s silky and light yet keeps my skin moisturised all day long! It has a lovely subtle scent, and the products name definitely reflects the results - it’s energising and radiance inducing that’s for sure!” – JoJo  Pevonia RS2 Rosacea Care Cream For anyone dealing with rosacea or chronic redness, this cream has been life-changing! The reviews don't lie. It's formulated with green tea extract, chamomile and licorice root for powerful anti-inflammatory and redness-reducing benefits, while vitamin E and squalane help repair the skin barrier. It’s gentle, comforting, and ideal for daily use to keep sensitivity under control. What customers love most is that it doesn't just temporarily cover redness, it actually helps improve the condition over time by strengthening your skin's barrier and reducing overall reactivity. “AMAZING CREAM! I absolutely love RS2 Rosacea care cream. It's the only cream my face loves & does not break out in rashes since I've hit the post menopause aga. It's so hydrating & id be lost without this face cream 🩵” – Cherie Christie The eye cream Vie Collection Chrono Eyes Puffiness – Dark Circles Wrinkle Cream  This eye cream is for people who want it all: less puffiness, softer lines and brighter under-eyes. It combines peptides, hyaluronic acid, vitamin c and niacinamide to target dark circles, bags and early wrinkles in one go. The formula helps smooth and firm the delicate eye contour while improving microcirculation, so eyes look more open and awake. The texture is rich but never heavy or greasy (crucial for eye products that need to work under concealer), and it absorbs quickly without causing milia or puffiness. People report visible improvements in all three concerns, less morning puffiness, brighter under-eyes, and smoother texture around the orbital area. It’s basically eight hours of sleep and a good concealer’s best friend, minus the makeup!! “This is a wonderful eye cream, it gives immediate gratification thanks to a pearlescent finish that instantly brightens the eye area and it has definitely calmed my puffiness, lightened by dark circles and even smoothed my wrinkles! It’s truly a fabulous eye cream that is well worth the price tag.” – Lisa M The sunscreen Medicalia Sunscreen SPF 40 with Blue Light Shield This sunscreen has been an absolute phenomenon, and it's because it addresses a concern most sunscreens ignore, blue light from screens. Yes, your phone and computer are ageing your skin, and this sunscreen is specifically formulated to protect against it. Beyond the blue light shield, it's just a brilliant daily SPF, lightweight, tinted (so no white cast ever), hypoallergenic, reef-safe, and packed with natural SPF (Zinc Oxide & Titanium Dioxide), hyaluronic acid, aloe vera and antioxidants like vitamin E and green tea. The subtle tint evens your skin tone enough that many people skip foundation entirely and just use this as their base. It's non-comedogenic, absorbs instantly, works beautifully under makeup, and genuinely doesn't feel like sunscreen. For anyone working from home or spending hours on devices (so, everyone), this has become the non-negotiable daily SPF. The 150ml size means it lasts forever, making the cost-per-use incredibly reasonable for the protection you're getting. “Love this product it gives all day sun protection doesn’t mark clothing and gives my skin a healthy glow I’m hooked!” – Jan Carlisle The multi-tasking foundation, primer and sunscreen in one! ELES Blue Light Radiant BB Cream 30 Speaking of blue light protection, this BB cream takes it a step further by combining SPF 20, blue light defence, AND buildable coverage with genuine skincare benefits. It's basically foundation, sunscreen and primer in one elegant tube. The formula contains hyaluronic acid for hydration, peptides for anti-ageing and vitamins A, C & E for antioxidant protection. The coverage is sheer to medium and buildable, perfect for that "your skin but better" finish. What makes it a bestseller is how it simplifies your routine without compromising results. You're getting sun protection, blue light defence, coverage, AND active skincare in one step. Customer reviews consistently mention how it evens tone, provides a natural glow, and actually improves their skin with continued use. It's multitasking at its finest, which is exactly what modern skincare should be! “If you're looking for a multi-tasking product that protects, perfects, and enhances your skin, look no further than this miraculous BB cream. Highly recommended!” – Nikki L

Summer skin: 9 beauty essentials you need

Summer skin: 9 beauty essentials you need

by Jo Boyden on Dec 13 2024
Summer is here! and with it comes the sun, the sea (for some of us) outdoor adventures, and well, the inevitable battle against the heat, humidity, and sun damage, so it’s important to be armed with a few must-have beauty essentials to keep skin radiant, protected and refreshed all season long. From multitasking face products to nourishing body care, we’ve rounded up BCs best summer beauty buys to add to your summer skincare routine.   Broad-spectrum sunscreen: Your skin’s best defence The golden rule of summer skincare is sunscreen, and it should be non-negotiable. A broad-spectrum SPF 30+ sunscreen protects against both UVA and UVB rays, preventing sunburn, premature aging, and hyperpigmentation. Opt for a lightweight, non-greasy formula to avoid clogged pores. Must-Try: Hubislab Post Rays UV Protect Sun Block SPF50+ PA+++ This amazing multi-tasking sun block provides complete UV and antioxidant protection for ageing or stressed-out skin! Its non-irritating, has an SPF of 50+ and protects the skin against UV radiation, preventing dryness, dullness and signs of premature ageing including hyperpigmentation. Rich in peptides and collagen it keeps skin nourished, healthy and elastic and the invisible matte formula applies smoothly and stays on all day. With zinc oxide as its main ingredient, there is zero irritation, so it is ideal for all skin types including those with extremely sensitive and/or ageing skin. N.B Don’t forget to reapply every two hours when outdoors, especially after swimming or sweating! Lightweight moisturiser for hydration Even in humid weather, your skin needs hydration! But you need to be mindful to not overdo it on the rich, nourishing creams as these can lead to clogged pores, inflammation and even acne in some cases! Its best to switch up your moisturiser for a more lightweight, oil-free formulation to keep your skin hydrated and dewy without feeling greasy. I currently can’t get enough of Phytomer Hydracontinue Radiance Energizing Cream. Thanks to its beautifully lightweight texture, it helps keep that outer layer of skin perfectly nourished without feeling too heavy. Rich in vitamins, it revitalizes, activates your skin’s cellular activity to promote natural regrowth, hydrates, softens and smooths skin for a radiant youthful appearance.   A Brightening Vitamin C Serum In the warmer months, when the sun is shining, UVB radiation is at its strongest, so it’s important to not only prioritise SPF but Vitamin C in our skincare too! Vitamin C when applied topically not only boosts our skin’s natural tolerance to the sun, but it is able to help control the formation of pigmentation, brighten your complexion, improve the appearance of fine lines and help with collagen production too! Our skincare go-to: Pevonia Optimal C Complex It's outstanding! The citrus scent is divine and just two pumps equal radiant looking skin instantaneously. Oh, and it feels a-mazing too thanks to its combination of vitamin c and hydrating powerhouse hyaluronic which quite literally drenches skin with repairing antioxidants. Layer a few drops on your skin before moisturising. Heaven.  A cooling face mist for instant refreshment Beat the summer heat with a refreshing face mist! A refreshing facial mist is a lifesaver on hot, humid days. It hydrates your skin, sets your makeup, and can help soothe sunburned skin. Look for mists with hydrating ingredients like hyaluronic acid and aloe vera. These spritzes not only cool you down but also provide an instant hydration boost, soothe irritation, and give your skin a dewy glow. We LOVE: Pevonia’s Hyaluronic Acid HydraMist Pro Tip: Keep your mist in the fridge for an extra cooling effect!   Exfoliating Scrub for Smooth skin While sunscreen is imperative and excess oil from sweating is a given, both can do a number on your pores! Cue exfoliation. It’ll help unclog unwanted debris from pores which in turn reduces the chances of blemishes. Just be sure not to overdo it though (use once or twice weekly at the most) and it’s best to steer clear if you are sunburned and allow skin to naturally heal. Must-Try: Phytomer Cyfolia Organic Radiance Exfoliating Cream Featuring two organic gentle exfoliants – argan kernels and pomegranate seeds, combined with orange water, oligomer and Cyfolia algae, this beautifully gentle exfoliator immediately clears debris and dull, dead skin to reveal a softer, smoother and more radiant complexion.   Self-Tanner for a safe summer glow Let’s face it we all want a gorgeously golden tan but without the sun damage! This is where self-tanners are a must! They really do give you that natural sun-kissed glow without the harmful effects of UV exposure. Just be sure to steer clear of spray and mousse self-tans though as these can be slightly drying for the skin. Instead, try a nourishing self-tanning cream and choose gradual formulas for a natural finish. Must-Try: Phytomer Sun Radiance Self-Tanning Cream Its white satin texture makes it so easy to apply without leaving any streaks, it quickly absorbs into the skin and within a few hours, you’ll have the most perfect long-lasting natural tan! Result.   After sun treatment Too much sun can result in itchy, irritated or sun burnt skin. An after-sun gel is a summer essential as it soothes and hydrates skin exposed to the sun, reducing redness, inflammation, and dryness. Enriched with cooling and restorative ingredients like aloe vera and water Lily, it helps repair UV damage, prolong your tan, and keep your skin calm, refreshed, and glowing all season long. Highly recommended: Pevonia After Sun Soothing Gel It is the perfect after sun skin remedy. It is a beautifully refreshing gel which literally soothes, cools and comforts the skin immediately. Water Lily extract and proline combine to decrease skin’s temperate, gently alleviating sun sensitive skin. Rich body cream for soft, smooth skin A rich body moisturiser really is another essential go-to in summer to combat dehydration from sun exposure, heat, and frequent swimming. It replenishes lost moisture, prevents dryness, and maintains your skin’s softness and elasticity. Our favourite: Pevonia De-Ageing Body Balm Papaya Pineapple This product might carry a hefty price tag but its for very good reason! Its literally heaven in a jar. The gorgeous subtle summer scent quite literally takes you on a tropical beach escape! But more importantly it has a beautifully luxurious rich and silky texture that quite literally envelopes skin While its formulation is packed with nourishing ingredients, from microemulsified Shea Butter, to Collagen and Elastin Polypeptides, Tegospheres with Retinol, Pomegranate, and other anti-ageing tropical fruit extracts to quite literally smooth, firm, tone and brighten skin almost instantly!  Waterproof makeup for long-lasting wear Sweat and water can wreak havoc on your makeup in the summer so its best to switch to waterproof formulas for mascara, eyeliner, and long-lasting foundation formulations to keep your look intact, and introduce (if you haven’t already) a primer! You’ll wish you had earlier! Try: ELES Pore Perfecting Face Primer Humidity and hot weather tend to stimulate the production of sebum, leading to more oil on the skin! This primer not only keeps makeup in place all day long, it also combats shine, absorbs excess oil and reduces the appearance of pores to keep your foundation looking flawless! Genius!   With these 9 summer beauty essentials, you really can maintain a radiant, healthy glow while protecting your skin from the challenges of the season.

24 beauty habits that are ageing you

24 beauty habits that are ageing you

by Jo Boyden on Sep 27 2024
Let's face it, we are all on the quest for radiant, youthful skin with many of us investing both our hard-earned money and time into perfecting our daily beauty routine as a result, but I’m here to tell you, that despite our best efforts the majority of us will still be making daily beauty mistakes, or following bad habits should I say, that actually add years to our face by making us look older than we actually are! Eek. From over-exfoliating to skipping sunscreen, keep reading as we count down 24 common beauty habits that could be ageing you! Remember it’s not too late to remedy this once you know the ones you are guilty of!   Wearing SPF only during the summer Let’s start with the most important habit of all, sunscreen. Not wearing SPF daily all year round is one of the biggest mistakes you can make for your skin. The suns harmful UV rays is hands down the no. 1 contributor to skin ageing so skipping your SPF is a no no. Yes, it's easy to remember to apply it when you're headed to the beach, or out and about on holiday, but so many of us skip this vital step in our everyday lives and not because we are necessarily lazy but because we don't understand the long term affect not wearing it will have on our skin! Even on cloudy days or when you’re indoors, UV rays can cause premature ageing, leading to wrinkles, dark spots, and sagging. Sun damage is cumulative, so every time you skip sunscreen, you’re speeding up the ageing process. How to fix it: Make SPF 30 or higher your daily must-have. Apply it generously every morning, and don’t forget to reapply throughout the day—especially if you’re spending time outdoors. And we understand that many sunscreens can feel oily on your skin or leave an unruly white residue that’s why we highly recommend Medicalia’s Sunscreen SPF 40 with Blue Light Shield. Thinking that the SPF in your makeup is enough to protect your skin Unless your makeup has an SPF factor of 30 or above it's unlikely to ward off premature ageing if worn alone. This is because the majority of makeup will protect against UVB rays but won't block UVA rays which is what causes skin damage. How to fix it: Layering your skin with a high factor SPF moisturiser and then foundation will give you the best chance of maintaining skin's youthful appearance, but if you are in love with your daily moisturiser which doesn't contain sun protection, use a foundation or BB Cream with a high enough SPF. We highly recommend ELES Blue Light Radiant BB Cream SPF 30. Formulated with potent ingredients including peptides, beta-carotene, amino acids, vitamin c, niacinamide, hyaluronic acid, vitamin e and vitamin c, it nourishes, brightens and protects skin against UVA and UVB, as well as blue light and free radical damage! Genius. Not updating your skincare as your skin changes You might have been loyal to the same moisturiser for many years but sadly the skincare you've used in your 20's really won't cut it in your 30's, 40's and beyond. This is because as we age our skin's needs dramatically change. Skin becomes thinner, drier, more sensitive, and loses elasticity as collagen and elastin start to deplete, while fine lines and wrinkles start to form. How to fix it: Understand your skin type and needs and choose products accordingly. Anti-ageing skincare rich in ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, collagen, and vitamin C become essential as we get older. For more info on this read about the 7 super ingredients in your skincare that are all the rage and adjust your products accordingly.   Skipping on your moisturiser It's that time of the month and a few pesky pimples have reared their ugly head, or perhaps you are often prone to adult acne or simply suffer from oily skin, so suddenly you think it best to lay off the moisturiser which must be exacerbating the issue right? Wrong. While you are likely not alone in thinking lathering up on moisturiser seems counterintuitive, everyone, no matter what your skin type or concern, needs to apply a moisturiser daily! This is because moisturiser maintains skin hydration throughout the day and therefore assists in fighting premature fine lines and wrinkles too. In fact, applying moisturiser will greatly reduce your chance of developing extreme dryness, skin sensitivity, or oiliness! Why? Dehydrated skin can lead to issues like inflammation, premature skin ageing, and even breakouts. When your skin becomes dry, your body responds by making more oil! And we all know excess oil can clog pores leading to more of those darn pesky pimples. How to fix it: Don’t skip moisturiser ever. Simply find the one that will be best for your skin type. Search BC by your skin concern and then look for the moisturiser that will be right for you. Just be sure to opt for lighter moisturisers by day, especially in the warmer months, and richer creams at night.   Focusing only on Wrinkles While we are all concerned about fine lines and wrinkles as we age, dark spots and pigmentation can actually give our complexion a dull, devitalised and in turn much older appearance too! In fact, dark spots and uneven skin tone can make us look 10 years older! How to fix it: If you suffer from hyperpigmentation ensure you introduce products specifically to help with this skin concern. We promise it'll positively impact your complexion and protect your skin too. Try Vie Collection's Mela White Radiance Brightening Essense, a triple-action daily cream that effectively acts against dark spots, free radicals, and UV. The results will speak for themselves. Ignoring eye care Unfortunately our eyes are the first area of our face to show ageing, so you need to show it love just as you would the rest of your face! Like a moisturiser, an eye cream’s main objective is to deliver brightening and anti-ageing ingredients, however in a milder, gentler, safer dose. Moisturisers tend to have a much richer consistency in comparison to their counterpart which if applied under the eyes can prove too much, resulting in irritation, allergic reactions and milia. How to fix it: Applying a good eye cream daily is essential in keeping fine, lines and wrinkles at yay! You can also buy eye creams targeted to specific eye concerns such as crow’s feet, under eye bags and dark circles. We highly recommend Vie Collection's Chrono Eyes Puffiness-Dark Circles Wrinkle Cream. A mouthful to say I know, but a product that does exactly what it says. It’s a beautifully fine cream enriched with moisturising ingredients to nourish the eye area while reversing puffiness, dark circles, and wrinkles! Seriously! Want younger looking eyes? Start wearing eye cream or eye gel today!   Rubbing Your Eyes The area around our eyes is the most delicate on our face, fact. When we are tired it's easy to fall into the trap of rubbing our eyes, but rubbing, tugging, or pulling at your eye area can cause tiny blood vessles to break resulting in dark circles that make you look tired All. Of. The. Time. How to fix it: Be mindful of your eyes. When youre tired try to leave them alone! And if you haven’t already get a good anti-ageing eye gel and eye cream for morning and night and start applying then stat!   8. Ignoring Your neck and decolletage Oh, the forgotten area! And the area of your skin which can actually age you the most! Exposed to sunlight just as much as your face, if your neck and decolletage aren't cared for daily or protected with SPF, they can end up crepey and wrinkly so much earlier than they should! Whatever you do for your face you should do for your neck and decolletage too. How to fix it: There are neck and chest specific products you can use, I personally use Phytomer's Decollete Parfait Neck and Decollete Renewing Care, it hydrates, nourishes refines and brightens skin for a more youthful appearance while smoothing wrinkles too! But there is also nothing wrong with using your daily moisturiser or a hydrating body cream instead! Just start doing it now! Forgetting your hands! We often focus all our anti-aging efforts on our face, but areas like hands can give away your age just as quickly. And I can bet your bottom dollar that many of us are not looking after this delicate area! The back of your hands have thinner skin and are often exposed to the sun and environmental damage, yet they’re frequently overlooked in our skincare routines. How to fix it: Whatever you do for your face, do for your hands! Its simple! Apply sunscreen, moisturiser, and anti-ageing products daily. We highly recommend Pevonia’s Collagen Hand Cream, its divinely nourishing and gives hands an instant lift in appearance and texture. Avoiding exfoliators It's not just fine lines and wrinkles that make you look older, having a dull uneven skin tone can easily add years to your face as well! As we age our skin's natural ability to shed dead cells declines, so without weekly exfoliation skin can become uneven, dull and lacklustre. This is why exfoliation is so imperative, and not a step that should be ignored. How to fix it: Many people are scared of exfoliation because they think their skin is too sensitive, and it will just aggravate an existing issue, but that's where natural enzyme exfoliators can be the answer. Hubislab's Pure Balance Papaya Enzyme Peeling Wash, Phytomer's Vegetal Exfoliant with Natural Enzymes and Pevonia's Enzymo Spherides Peeling Cream are formulated with natural enzymes which basically melt away dead cells so no scrubbing is needed. Just remember removing dead skin cells helps your skin properly absorb moisturiser which in turn keeps fine lines and dehydration at bay, as well as brightening skins radiance. Now, who wouldn't want that!! Or simply going overboard with exfoliating If you tend to sway the other way and love to exfoliate your skin a little too much i'm here to tell you stop it now! Over exfoliating can actually slow cell turnover and lead to irritation and inflammation. Over time, this can weaken your skin’s barrier, causing fine lines and wrinkles to appear more quickly. Your skin needs time to regenerate, and over-exfoliating can strip away essential oils and moisture, making you look older. How to fix it: Stick to exfoliation once, maybe twice a week for the best results. If you like to use an exfoliator with grains or microbeads but skin tends to be a little on the sensitive side give Pevonia's Gentle Exfoliating Cleanser a go. it’s great for those who love physical exfoliators with granules but want to steer clear of facial scrubs which could be a little harsh on the skin. It gently polishes your complexion with its unique creamy yet granular texture, formulated with jojoba beads, saponaria and chamomile, revealing a softer, smoother and brighter complexion every time! Not drinking enough water As I'm sitting here writing this, I can hold my hands up and say today so far I've only drunk 2 glasses of water when I should have in fact consumed at least a litre by now! Yes, it's fact, water, or lack of should I say is a real skin ager!! And I know I must practice what a preach! The thing is I do, but some days I will admit it's easy to forget! And when I do, I get cross with myself as I can see it in my skin! It's drier, duller and devitalised. This is because drinking 'enough' water helps the body to flush out toxins while increasing blood flow to the skin which gives it an even tone and dewy appearance! And dewy skin equals youthful skin after all! How to fix it: Aim to drink at least 8 glasses of water a day to keep your skin hydrated from the inside out. Adding water-rich foods like cucumbers and watermelon to your diet can also give your skin an extra hydration boost. Not a huge fan of water? Try a good herbal tea instead.   Yo-Yo Dieting Constantly fluctuating between losing and gaining weight can wreak havoc on your skin. Yo-yo dieting can cause your skin to stretch and lose elasticity, making it more prone to sagging and wrinkles. The loss of essential nutrients during restrictive diets can also lead to dull, unhealthy-looking skin. How to fix it: Focus on a balanced, nutrient-rich diet that supports overall health, including your skin. Healthy fats, antioxidants, and vitamins will keep your skin nourished and resilient.   Ignoring Stress Stress doesn’t just affect your mood—it can take a toll on your skin too. Stress increases cortisol, which breaks down collagen and leads to wrinkles. How to fix it: Make stress management a priority with mindfulness practices, regular exercise, and relaxation techniques. Indulging in hot showers and baths How many of us are guilty of indulging in a hot shower or simply washing our faces with water set to a high temp. Unfortunately extreme water temperatures will strip healthy natural oils from your skin quickly, making it dry and therefore age much faster. Water that's too hot can also dilate your capillaries leading to spider veins. How to fix it: For best and healthy results you should be washing with lukewarm water! Easier to achieve in the warmer months!   Not getting enough sleep....when you could get more If I had a dollar for every time I said to my husband I must get to bed early tonight because I need more sleep and am fed up of looking old and tired, I'd be a rich woman. While they say practice what you preach, I am a testament that not getting enough sleep (when I could indeed fit in another 1-2 hours a night (darn netflix!) literally does age you. Poor sleep is quite literally to blame for premature ageing, dermatitis, eczema, acne, loss of collagen and more! Scary right? So let's make a pact and try for that 8 hours + we really do need nightly. Now be sure to follow our advice to be sure you slow down the signs of ageing naturally! How to fix it: Aim for 7-9 hours of quality sleep each night to give your skin the time it needs to recover and rejuvenate.   Over doing your brows Yes, we need brows to look youthful, after all they frame the eyes and lift the face. Many of us tweezed our brows to thin lines in the 80’s only to find they never grew back so what to many of us do! Fill out our brows, but often with harsh, red toned pencils which im afraid can make us look hard and older! How to fix it: The goal is to create natural looking thicker brows like the ones we used to have. Opt for taupe colour brow products instead of warm browns, these will frame your eyes beautifully without taking over your face. Apply the brow product in soft stokes to create the illusion of natural hair. Be sure not to overfill the front part of your brow though! This area should have soft hair that graduates into more density. We recommend using the ELES Precision Brow Pencil. The soft, fine pencil allows you to perfectly line and fill your brows and the formula lasts for us to 10 hours! It’s amazing. Using the wrong tone of foundation Many foundations and BB Creams come in both warm and cool tones but remember for many of us cool tones can exacerbate signs of age! This is because they often have blue, pink, or ashy undertones, which can accentuate fine lines, wrinkles, and uneven skin texture. As skin ages, it tends to lose its natural warmth and radiance, so using a foundation with cool tones can make the complexion appear dull, flat, or even greyish too! Which in turn can also highlight dark circles or any sallowness in the skin. How to fix it: Opt for warmer tones that help counteract complexion pinkness that comes with thinning of the skin and exposure of fine capillaries. Warmer tones also conceal shadows better which means you need less concealer. We recommend using ELES Blue Light Radiant BB Cream 30, it’s packed with nature’s anti-ageing actives and leaves the skin glowing.   19. Overloading on foundation powder Face powder, when used correctly and frugally can be a fantastic makeup staple (I have been I’m in love with the ELES Mineral Powder Foundation for years!) however, no matter your skin type, too much face powder can actually age you! That’s right, it can highlight fine lines and wrinkles instead of helping to conceal them! How to fix it: Im not saying you have to totally forgo your trusty powder foundation compact, but it’s best to use powder sparingly – on your t-zone, or for quick touch-up’s, Or better still make sure you opt for a lightweight powder!   Using the wrong concealer or concealer shade As we mature and our face loses its youthful “plumpness”, shadow start to really appear under our eyes, around the nose, and at the corners of our mouth. It’s tempting to reach for a heavy duty, ultra-light shade concealer to hide these dark areas. The problem is that they just make the dark shadows look grey as opposed to concealing them! How to fix it: Opt instead for peachy toned, lightweight concealers that won’t cake on the skin and counteract the blue in the shadows. We recommend ELES Dual Action Concealer, it acts like 8 hours of sleep in a tube! We love it! Applying eye makeup that makes the eyes droop Who doesn’t love makeup! After all it can boost our confidence, enhance our natural beauty and help soften the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles! But sadly certain eye makeup techniques and products can make our eyes appear droopy as well as emphasize ageing signs as we get older! Thick, dark eyeliner, especially on the lower lash line, can make eyes look smaller and more tired. It can also draw attention to sagging skin around our delicate peepers. Then there is our eyeshadow! Eyeshadow enhances eye shape, adds depth and dimension making eyes appear more vibrant but shimmer and frosty shades while fun can settle into fine lines and wrinkles, exacerbating them and making our eyelids look more creased or droopy. How to fix it: To counteract this, opt for lighter, more neutral shades on the lids, keep eyeliner lighter, thin and lifted, and focus on lifting the upper lash line to create a more youthful, wide-eyed appearance. For your eyeliner we recommend ELES Superwear Gel Eyeliner, its soft and easy to blend out and once set won’t transfer to the lids. If you have hooded or droopy eyes here are some top tips to improve them naturally. Continuing to use that cold frosted lipstick we love As we age, similar to our skin, our lips start to lose volume and in turn fine lines start to form! Unfortunately that frosted lip colour that we once loved (and looked good) no longer does! This is because frosted lip colours enhance these lines making your lips age you even more! How to fix it: It’s time to change up your lipstick! Instead of that frosted favourite, opt for a cream or satin lipstick that will make your lips look fuller and smoother. Many of these contain moisturising molecules that plump the lips and keep them hydrated longer.   Going to bed with makeup on Well here's one you've heard many a time before! Right? From a few too many wines to being just plain old exhausted, sometimes it hard to peel yourself off your bed to go and remove your makeup but remove your makeup you must! Cleansing your face especially at night to remove not only your makeup but any remnants of the days sweat, dirt and grime is imperative for healthy skin. Not removing your makeup means your skin is unable to regenerate effectively while you sleep, pores clog, blemishes form and fatigue (ageing!) signs start to appear. Makeup can also trap dirt and pollution, which leads to oxidative stress—damaging your skin and breaking down collagen, the protein that keeps your skin firm and smooth. How to fix it: No matter how tired you are, make cleansing a non-negotiable part of your nighttime routine. Use a gentle cleanser or micellar water to remove makeup and grime, giving your skin a chance to breathe and repair while you sleep. For a fantastic makeup remover which effectively melts away makeup and grime with minimum effort try Phytomer's Doux Contour Eye and Lip Waterproof Makeup Remover. Combining the effectiveness of an oil (a trio of oils in fact) and the gentleness of a lotion, this ultra-hydrating makeup remover, eradicates even the most stubborn of lips and eye makeup fast! To read more about sleeping in makeup and what it really does to our skin click here. 24. Sleeping on your stomach or side This one might surprise you, but the way you sleep can actually affect your skin. If you regularly sleep on your stomach or side, your face gets squished against the pillow, which can lead to wrinkles over time. These “sleep lines” tend to form around the eyes, cheeks, and forehead, making you look older. Just great I hear you say! How to fix it: Try sleeping on your back to reduce pressure on your face. Investing in a silk or satin pillowcase can also help, as it causes less friction on your skin than cotton.
9 signs of a damaged skin barrier and how to fix it

9 signs of a damaged skin barrier and how to fix it

by Jo Boyden on Sep 06 2024
A healthy skin barrier is the secret to glowing skin. When it’s healthy, our skin looks radiant and plump, but when it’s damaged it can become prone to dryness, inflammation, breakouts and more! If you’ve been dealing with skin issues that just won’t go away, your skin barrier could well be to blame!  Keep reading to learn about 9 common signs of a damaged skin barrier, why yours may be compromised and the best solutions to fix it!   What is our skin barrier? The outer most layer of our skin, or technically known as the stratum corneum, our skin barrier is a complex system of lipids, proteins and cells. It’s the first line of defence against bacteria and external aggressors, from pollution and harsh weather conditions, to stress, smoking and even blue light damage from our digital devices! Think of it as a protective shield keeping irritants out and locking moisture in. What are the most common signs of a damaged skin barrier? Increased sensitivity Do you find your skin reacting to products that never used to be a problem? Unfortunately a damaged barrier can make your skin hypersensitive. This means that products with active ingredients like retinol or vitamin C might suddenly cause stinging or irritation. Aghh How to fix it: Simplify your skincare routine. Focus on soothing and hydrating skin. Opt for fragrance-free, hypoallergenic products designed specifically for sensitive skin, then slowly reintroduce active ingredients once your barrier is repaired. Dryness and Flakiness Dry, flaky skin can be a major sign that your skin barrier isn’t holding onto moisture the way it should. Even if you’re moisturising regularly, your skin might still feel parched and tight. How to fix it: You need to incorporate a hydrating serum rich in hyaluronic acid into your daily routine and up the ante with your moisturiser too! You want a nourishing moisturiser formulated with ceramides, hyaluronic acid and glycerin which will help lock in moisture and rebuild the barrier. Redness and Inflammation One of the first indicators of a damaged skin barrier is redness that just won’t go away. If your skin is constantly inflamed, blotchy, or has developed conditions like rosacea, it’s a sign that your protective layer is compromised. Without the barrier functioning properly, your skin is more susceptible to irritants and environmental factors that can cause persistent redness. How to fix it: Calm your skin with products containing anti-inflammatory ingredients like niacinamide, aloe vera, and chamomile. Avoid anything that could further irritate your skin, like harsh exfoliants or overly fragrant products. Breakouts and Acne When your skin barrier is compromised, your skin can overproduce oil to compensate for the lack of moisture. This can lead to clogged pores, breakouts, and even acne in those of us who normally have clear skin. How to fix it: Use a gentle cleanser that will remove excess oil without stripping the skin of its natural moisture. And make sure you avoid products that could clog your pores. Incorporate lightweight, oil-free moisturisers that hydrate without causing breakouts. Tightness and Discomfort Do you often feel like your skin is tight or uncomfortable, especially after cleansing? This could be a sign that your barrier is stripped of its natural oils. When your skin loses its protective lipids, it can no longer maintain its elasticity and comfort, leading to a sensation of tightness. How to fix it: The first step to fixing tight, uncomfortable skin is to replenish lost moisture and help rebuild the lipid layer of the barrier. Creamy or oil-based cleansers are great for restoring hydration while gently removing dirt and impurities and look for products rich in ceramides, fatty acids, glycerin, hyaluronic acid and squalane which will help restore the natural protective layer as well as lock in moisture. Hyperpigmentation A weakened barrier can make your skin more susceptible to damage from the sun and environmental pollutants, leading to an increase in hyperpigmentation such as dark spots, also known as age spots and sun spots! If you notice that your skin is developing more pigmentation issues, it could be a sign that your barrier needs some serious TLC. How to fix it: Incorporate antioxidants such as vitamin c and niacinamide into your skincare routine as they can help repair the skin and reduce the appearance of dark spots by neutralizing free radicals. Once your barrier is stronger you can then start introducing targeted treatments to fade hyperpigmentation. And sunscreen is a non-negotiable! Look for sunscreens that not only protect your skin from sun damage but also help repair hyperpigmentation too! Itching and burning sensations If your skin feels itchy, tingly, or has a burning sensation, even when you’re using your usual products, this could be a sign that your skin barrier has been compromised. This discomfort is your skin’s way of telling you it needs some extra care. How to fix it: Avoid using hot water on your face and skip harsh treatments like scrubs or peels. Opt for soothing, fragrance-free moisturisers and avoid over-washing. Dehydrated skin despite an oily appearance Ever had skin that feels oily on the surface but tight and dry underneath? This is a classic sign of a damaged barrier. Your skin might be overproducing oil to make up for the lack of moisture, leading to that uncomfortable mix of oily and dehydrated skin. How to fix it: Balance your skin with hydrating products that aren’t too heavy. Hyaluronic acid serums and light, non-greasy moisturisers can help provide the moisture your skin needs without adding excess oil. Ingredients like glycerin and squalane can provide moisture balance. Premature ageing Without proper protection, your skin is more exposed to free radicals and environmental damage which can accelerate the ageing process! Therefore a damaged skin barrier can lead to premature wrinkles, fine lines, and a loss of elasticity. How to fix it: Focus on repairing your barrier with nourishing, antioxidant-rich products that protect and strengthen your skin. Incorporate ingredients like peptides, vitamin C, vitamin E and sunscreen to help combat free radicals and boost collagen production.   Why do you have a damaged skin barrier? A damaged skin barrier can result from a variety of factors! Anything from your lifestyle and skincare habits to the environment. Here are the most common reasons your skin barrier could be compromised right now; Over-exfoliation Using exfoliants too frequently, whether physical scrubs or chemical exfoliants (like AHAs and BHAs), can strip away the outermost layer of your skin. This layer is crucial for protecting the underlying skin, and over-exfoliating can leave your skin vulnerable to damage. Harsh skincare products Products with high concentrations of active ingredients, such as retinol or acids, can be too strong for some skin types, especially if used too often or without proper moisturising and sun protection. Harsh cleansers with sulfates or alcohol can also strip your skin of its natural oils, leading to a weakened barrier. Environmental factors Exposure to extreme weather conditions—like harsh winds, cold temperatures, or excessive sun—can compromise your skin barrier. Pollution and other environmental toxins can also stress the skin, leading to barrier damage over time. Dehydration There are many reasons your skin might be dehydrated. From the products you are using (you need more moisture) to a change in weather or simply being over exposed to hot or cold air be it air con or heating! And then there is the chance we are simply dehydrated from not drinking enough water I know many of us can be guilty of that! Over-cleansing Washing your face too often or using water that’s too hot can strip your skin of its natural oils. This over-cleansing can disrupt the skin’s natural pH balance and lead to barrier damage. Eek! Stress and lack of sleep Sadly stress and inadequate sleep can really take a toll on our skin. Stress hormones like cortisol can lead to inflammation and impair the skin’s ability to repair itself, making your barrier more susceptible to damage. Allergies and irritants Using products that contain allergens or irritants, such as fragrances or certain preservatives, can trigger allergic reactions or irritation, leading to a compromised skin barrier. Poor diet Yes! You read that right. What you eat can definitely reflect on your skin! A diet lacking in essential nutrients like healthy fats, vitamins, and antioxidants, can weaken your skin barrier. Consuming too much sugar or processed foods can also lead to inflammation and skin issues. Ageing As you age, your skin naturally loses some of its ability to retain moisture and regenerate. This makes the skin barrier more prone to damage and less efficient at protecting against external factors. Medical Conditions Certain skin conditions, like eczema, psoriasis, or rosacea, inherently involve a compromised skin barrier. These conditions require specific care to help manage symptoms and protect the skin.   How to repair a damaged skin barrier If you now know your skin barrier has been damaged there are simple steps you can take to fix it so fear not! Just remember restoring your skin barrier won’t happen overnight though, so make sure you are consistent with your care and you will see improvements we promise! Here are a few general tips: Avoid hot water Ok so this is one I am definitely guilty of. I LOVE a piping hot shower or bath but I do know that this is damaging my skin! Sadly hot water can strip your skin of its natural oils, exacerbating dryness and irritation. Try to be less like me and use lukewarm water when at least cleansing your face! Stay Hydrated Drinking plenty of water helps to maintain your skin’s hydration levels from the inside out (one hand holding my water bottle as I type this!) Try to manage stress and get plenty of shut eye! Stress-reducing activities like meditation, listening to music and exercise can definitely help alleviate stress. And there is a reason “beauty sleep” is a thing! By trying to get enough sleep (7-9 hours day night) can really make a difference to your skin. Protect your skin from the sun Well this is definitely a given. We all know that the sun is the no. 1 cause of damage to our skin. And unfortunately a damaged barrier is more vulnerable to UV damage, so make sure to apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen daily. You should already be anyway! Simplify your routine and use nourishing skincare Less is more when your skin barrier is damaged. Stick to a basic cleanser, cut back on exfoliants, retinol creams, and other potentially irritating products and focus on gentle, hydrating serums and moisturisers formulated with nourishing and barrier-repairing ingredients including ceramides, hyaluronic acid, niacinamide and glycerin. These ingredients help to replenish your skin’s natural lipids and restore its protective function. Hyperpigmentation: The causes and the best treatments

Hyperpigmentation: The causes and the best treatments

by Jo Boyden on Aug 30 2024
Hyperpigmentation is a fairly common skin condition and affects people of all ages. But if you are one of the many dealing with stubborn dark spots or patches on your skin you are likely wondering why and how you can get rid of it! Understanding what causes hyperpigmentation is the first step in effectively treating it. Read on to discover everything you need to know about hyperpigmentation, what the most common causes are, as well as the best options for achieving a more even, radiant complexion.   What is hyperpigmentation? Hyperpigmentation is when certain areas of your skin become darker than the surrounding skin. This happens because of an excess production of melanin, the pigment that gives your skin its colour. Hyperpigmentation can appear as very small brown, black, grey or pink spots, or patches but can also cover larger areas of your skin, usually on your face. These spots or patches are more commonly known as brown spots, age spots, sun spots or as our grandparents used to call them, liver spots. While hyperpigmentation is not harmful, and can be common in people of all ages and skin types, it can definitely be frustrating! Fortunately, with the right treatments, you can effectively reduce the appearance of hyperpigmentation and restore a more even complexion!   What are the most common types of hyperpigmentation? Age Spots Also known as liver spots (as our grandparents would have called them back in the day!), age spots are flat, brown, grey, or black spots that typically appear on sun-exposed areas of the skin as you age. In short, age spots tend to develop in people over the age of 50 and are the result of prolonged UV exposure over the years.  Sun Spots Also caused by UV exposure, sun spots, medically known as actinic keratoses, are similar in appearance to age spots but can occur at any age. Although they can commonly appear on the face, you can also find sun spots all over areas of the body which has been exposed to the sun. The biggest difference between harmless age spots and sun spots is the texture. Age spots are smooth and flat, but potentially dangerous sun spots usually feel rough and scaly. Melasma Also known as chloasma, or “the mask of pregnancy”! the potential main triggers for Melasma is genetics, hormonal fluctuations and sun overexposure. Very common in pregnancy, melasma can suddenly appear in the form of brown patches usually on your face.   What causes hyperpigmentation? Several factors can actually contribute to hyperpigmentation, although sun exposure is the no.1 cause! Sun Exposure UV rays from the sun trigger melanin production, leading to sunspots and dark patches, especially on areas frequently exposed to the sun. Hormonal Changes Conditions like melasma, often triggered by pregnancy or birth control pills, cause dark, blotchy patches on the skin. Inflammation Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation can result from acne, injuries, or skin conditions like eczema, where the skin overproduces melanin during healing. Age Over time, the skin’s ability to regulate melanin production diminishes, leading to age spots.   How to get rid of hyperpigmentation Ultimately to prevent or reduce hyperpigmentation you need to do 4 things; Wear sunscreen Sadly exposure to the sun, (which we know ramps up over the summer months!) can both worsen existing age spots and sun spots, as well as encourage new ones to form! The most effective way to therefore prevent this from happening is to apply sunscreen (at least SPF 30) liberally and religiously even single day. You know I preach about how sunscreen should be a non-negotiable step in your skincare routine come rain, hail or shine though! Use brightening products Products containing Vitamin C, niacinamide and retinol are all powerful allies in the fight against pigmentation. These ingredients work to lighten dark spots and even out your skin tone, leaving you with a brighter, more uniform complexion. Look for formulas with high concentrations of active ingredients for maximum efficacy. Just remember skincare requires patience and consistency to reap the long-term benefits!  Exfoliate regularly Regular exfoliation is key to fading age spots and pigmentation. Alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) and beta hydroxy acids (BHAs) help slough off dead skin cells, promoting cell turnover and revealing fresher, more evenly-toned skin. Consider using a gentle chemical exfoliant a few times a week to target discolouration without irritating your skin. Wear protective clothing Wearing protective clothing will also help fight hyperpigmentation by shielding your skin from harmful UV rays, which as we know are a major cause of age spots, sun spots and uneven skin tone. Fabrics with a tight weave and sun-protective properties will block the penetration of UV rays, reducing the risk of sun-induced pigmentation. Wide-brimmed hats, long sleeves, and UV-protective fabrics are effective at minimizing direct sun exposure, preventing existing pigmentation from worsening, and helping to maintain an even skin tone over time. And don’t forget your peepers! sunglasses are a must too!   The best products to fade hyperpigmentation As mentioned, one of the simplest ways to protect your skin from hyperpigmentation is to wear sunscreen daily, no matter what the weather is like. However if you are looking for products to fade your already pigmentated skin, we have the solution for you!   Vie Collection Mela White Protective Sunscreen SPF 30 This is not only an amazing daily sunscreen to protect skin from UV rays, but it’s also formulated with two high-tech ingredients that act against dark spots and free radicals. With regular use your dark spots will become less visible and your skin more unified. It’s fantastic!  Pevonia C Complex with oxyzomes Vitamin C and Hyaluronic Acid work together to hydrate, correct photo damage and drench your skin with repairing antioxidants for a revitalized, youthful glow. It’s really good stuff and I’m testament to that!  Medicalia L Retinol Smoothing Cream This powerful yet gentle retinol cream is a must in the fight against Hyperpigmentation! Formulated with retinol and Glycolic and Lactic Acid, it’s an excellent resurfacing and lightening cream for photodamaged skin. Just be sure to introduce it slowly and apply before bed. Paired with niacinamide, it prevents the formation of hyperpigmentation and reduces melanin production. The result, brighter, more even skin! Vita B3 Concentrated Solution Boost your skincare routine with a shot of vitamin B3 to visibly improve skins radiance while reducing the appearance of dark spots. 10% vitamin B3 (niacinamide) acts by slowing down the transport of melanin to the keratinocytes (the most common type of skin cell constituting the epidermis) effectively decreasing pigmentation while reinforcing the protective functions of the skin barrier for the optimal skin health. The concentrate’s light, melting texture allows the active ingredients to penetrate the skin for outstanding efficiency and immediate results. Skin is brighter, more uniform and more visibly radiant. After continued use, hyperpigmentation is significantly reduced.
Salicylic acid: What is it and how will it benefit your skin

Salicylic acid: What is it and how will it benefit your skin

by Jo Boyden on Aug 17 2024
Whether you’re battling breakouts, dealing with oily skin, or just looking for a way to keep your complexion clear, you’ll want to ensure salicylic acid is an ingredient in your skincare! But what exactly is salicylic acid? And how does it transform you skin? Keep reading for everything you need to know about salicylic acid—why it’s so effective, how to use it, and why it deserves a spot in your skincare routine. What is salicylic acid? Salicylic acid is a beta hydroxy acid (BHA) known for its exfoliating and anti-inflammatory properties, commonly used in skincare. it penetrates deep into the pores, dissolving excess oil and exfoliating dead skin cells. This helps prevent and treat breakouts, blackheads, and whiteheads. Unlike some harsher acne treatments, salicylic acid is gentle yet effective, making it suitable for frequent use (we are talking 2-3 times a week). Incorporating salicylic acid into your skincare routine can lead to clearer, smoother skin! How does salicylic acid work? By breaking down the bonds between dead skin cells, salicylic acid encourages their shedding, which helps to prevent pore blockages that lead to breakouts. Is salicylic acid suitable for all skin types? Salicylic acid is ideal for those with oily or acne-prone skin, as it helps control excess oil production and prevents the formation of new pimples. However, it can also benefit other skin types, particularly those who are susceptible to the occasional breakout or congested skin. Can salicylic acid cause skin irritation? Salicylic acid can sometimes cause skin irritation, especially if you use it excessively or tend to have sensitive skin.  Common signs of irritation include redness, dryness, peeling, or a burning sensation. Just before you test the product first before applying all over your face. How often should you use salicylic acid? How often you use skincare formulated with salicylic acid really depends on the product itself as well your skin specific skin type. If you are new to salicylic acid, we recommend you start with using it once or twice a week and gradually increase to daily use if your skin tolerates it. It's also important to follow up with a good moisturiser to keep your skin hydrated. Can you use salicylic acid with other skincare ingredients? Yes, you can use salicylic acid with other skincare ingredients, but it's important to be cautious. Combining salicylic acid with soothing and hydrating ingredients like niacinamide and hyaluronic acid, can work wonders for your skin. However, be careful when combining it with other exfoliants like glycolic acid or retinol, as this can increase the risk of irritation. It's best to introduce these ingredients gradually into your routine or use them on alternate days to avoid over-exfoliating your skin. How to incorporate salicylic acid into your skincare routine Start with a cleanser containing salicylic acid, using it slowly to allow your skin to adjust. If your skin tolerates it well, you can gradually increase usage or introduce additional products like serums or spot treatments. Always follow with a moisturiser and sunscreen, as salicylic acid can make your skin more sensitive to the sun. Heading on holidays? The best products to prep your skin

Heading on holidays? The best products to prep your skin

Exfoliate 2-3 times in the weeks prior to going away for the best results. Just be sure not to over-exfoliate! 12 beauty tips these celebrities swear by

by Jo Boyden on May 18 2024
Ever wondered how your favourite celebrities manage to defy the ageing process and maintain their flawless complexion year after year? While genetics may play a role, the secrets to their youthful, glowing skin often lie in carefully curated skincare routines and expert advice passed down from generation to generation. From A-list actors to supermodels gracing the runway, keep reading as we uncover the top beauty tips these celebrities swear by, 12 simple strategies you and I are already likely doing daily, just not religiously like them! Do not skimp on the amount of water you drink "I swear by hydration. Drinking plenty of water keeps my skin looking plump and youthful." - Jennifer Aniston Keeping yourself hydrated both inside and out is one of the most essential tips when it comes to your skin. This is because water is vital for maintaining skin health and youthfulness. It hydrates the skin from within promoting elasticity and plumpness while reducing the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines. Hydration also supports skin cell function, collagen production, and repair processes. Additionally, water helps flush out toxins, preventing breakouts and promoting clear skin. By strengthening the skin's natural barrier, water protects against environmental damage and maintains an even skin tone. Ultimately, staying hydrated is essential for preserving the youthful appearance and vitality of our skin! Try to drink a minimum of 8 glasses of water a day and for that much needed added nourishment make sure you always moisturise morning and night! We recommend using formulations rich in hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid attracts and retains moisture, plumping and hydrating the skin. In fact the molecules can hold 1,000 times its weight in water! This helps to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, leaving the skin smooth, supple, and youthful. We are obsessed with the Pevonia Hyaluronic Acid Hydra Serum and Hyaluronic acid Hydra Mist! Do things every day that will help you de-stress “I think that anything you can do to remove stress will give you a better glow. That’s the number one answer…" Cate Blanchett Stress is an inevitable part of life, but its impact doesn’t just affect our mood, it can significantly affect the health and appearance ofour skin too! Stress triggers the release of cortisol, a hormone that can throw our skin out of whack. It can cause the increase of oil production, leading to clogged pores and breakouts. It also has the ability tobreak down collagen and elastin, causing wrinkles and sagging. Plus, stress can make skin conditions like eczema and psoriasis flare up, making our skin red, itchy, and inflamed. All these things combined can leave our complexion looking dull and tired, far from the youthful glow so many celebrities promote! That's why it's important to find ways to de-stress and take care of our skin. Whether it's through deep breathing, yoga, meditation, listening to music, or simply some self-care time, giving ourselves a break can help keep our skin looking its glowing best! Eat a diet rich in Antioxidants “I eat lots of berries; they’re full of antioxidants" - Olivia Palermo Antioxidants can do wonders for our skin! And it’s true, a rich source comes from berries! Antioxidants help fight off free radicals, which are harmful molecules that can damage our skin cells and accelerate ageing. Berries like blueberries, strawberries, and raspberries are packed with antioxidants like vitamin C and polyphenols, which can help protect our skin from environmental damage, reduce inflammation, and promote a brighter, more youthful complexion. Incorporating these colourful fruits into our diet can nourish our skin from the inside out, leaving it looking radiant and healthy. We also love antioxidant rich skincare too! Here are three of our favourites; Naturys Anti-Age Antioxidant Facial Toner, Pevonia Vitamin C Complex and Pevonia’s Micro-Retinol Essential Moisturiser Always remove makeup before bed! "I've never gone to bed without washing my face. Never in my life. Even if I'm sick, tired — heck, even if I was drunk! I might forget to take off the dress, the shoes, and the jewellery, but not the makeup. It's second nature." - Salma Hayek Not washing your face before bed can have detrimental effects on your skin. Throughout the day, dirt, oil, and environmental pollutants accumulate on our skin's surface, clogging pores and leading to breakouts. By neglecting to cleanse your face at night, these impurities remain trapped, causing inflammation and acne. Additionally, makeup left on overnight can further exacerbate these issues, as it can mix with sweat and bacteria, increasing the risk of infections and irritation. Not cleansing your face before bed also disrupts the skin's natural renewal process, hindering its ability to repair and regenerate overnight! This can result in dullness and premature ageing! So, no matter how tired or tipsy you might be, get cleansing before hitting the hay! For hassle free cleansing use an all-rounder makeup remover like Phytomer’s Doux Contour Eye and Lip Waterproof Makeup Remover. It’s a fantastic and effectively melts away makeup and grime with minimum effort! Combining the effectiveness of an oil (a trio of oils in fact) and the gentleness of a lotion, this ultra-hydrating makeup remover, eradicates even the most stubborn of lips and eye makeup fast! Always wear sunscreen "Sunscreen, every single day, rain or shine. It's the best anti-ageing product out there." - Priyanka Chopra And we 100% agree! Sunscreen is hands down the no.1 defence against premature ageing! The harmful UV rays from the sun can cause a multitude of skin issues, including wrinkles, fine lines, sunspots, and sagging skin. By wearing sunscreen daily, you can protect your skin from these damaging effects and prevent premature ageing. UV radiation damages the skin's collagen and elastin fibres, leading to loss of elasticity and firmness, which are key contributors to aging skin. Additionally, UV exposure can result in hyperpigmentation, uneven skin tone, and the formation of wrinkles and fine lines. Using a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher helps shield the skin from both UVA and UVB rays, which are responsible for different types of damage. UVA rays penetrate deep into the skin and contribute to premature aging, while UVB rays primarily cause sunburns. Consistently wearing sunscreen, even on cloudy days or during the winter months, is essential for maintaining youthful-looking skin and protecting against the harmful effects of UV radiation. Incorporating sunscreen into your daily skincare routine is one of the best ways to prevent premature aging and maintain healthy, radiant skin for years to come. We love Medicalia – Sunscreen SPF 40 with Blue Light Shield. You might be a little reluctant to wear your sunscreen dailybecause quite frankly its smell and greasy texture puts you off, but that’s because you haven’t found a sunscreen that works for you! This one I promise you are going to love! It’s perfectly lightweight and does not leave a white case or greasy residue behind! It contains an exclusive mineral formula to shield skin from harmful sun rays, blue light damage and pollution! And what’s more, the formula is reef-safe and works for all skin types and tones too! Use eye cream daily “Never skip eye cream. It’s my secret weapon against fine lines and puffiness.” Sandra Bullock Your eyes are the most delicate area on your face and the first area to really age you! A good eye cream really can be game-changing when it comes to the pursuit of longer lasting youthful skin! Exfoliation is key “I start every day by exfoliating my face, something I’ve done for the past 40 years. I feel like it’s really contributed to my skin feeling fresh and smooth. Forty years ago, I read an article that said men always look five years younger than women who are their same age. They contributed that to them shaving every day, and the daily exfoliating with shaving making their skin look younger. I was like, I’m not going to let them get away with that!" Christie Brinkley Exfoliation is definitely key when it comes to skin looking younger! After all exfoliation promotes cell turnover, improving skin texture, and enhancing radiance. It also unclogs pores preventing breakouts while helping other products in your skincare routine absorb more effectively into skin. Just remember not every skin type can tolerate daily exfoliation and it depends on the exfoliator you use too! Its best to start slowly by exfoliating once or twice a week and if skin tends to be a little sensitive opt for fruit enzyme exfoliators which won’t irritate skin. Over-exfoliating or using harsh scrubs can strip the skin of its natural oils and lead to inflammation, redness, and sensitivity. Try incorporating facial massage into your daily skincare routine “Facial massages to boost blood flow and keep your skin looking fresh.” - Julia Roberts We couldn’t agree more! Facial massage offers a multitude of benefits for the skin, we just need to find the time to incorporate it into our day! Firstly, facial massage promotes improved circulation, delivering oxygen and essential nutrients to the skin while removing toxins. This enhanced blood flow results in a brighter, more radiant complexion, as well as improved skin tone and texture! Facial massage also stimulates the lymphatic syst

Harsh cleansers can strip your skin of its natural oils, leading to increased redness and irritation. This beautifully light-textured cleanser gently removes accumulated impurities, while diffusing redness and irritation. Formulated with Chamomile and Calendula it delivers soothing, calming and desensitizing benefits to your delicate skin. Cool off with a cold compress When your face is feeling particularly fiery, try a cold compress. A soft cloth soaked in cold water can work wonders to calm redness and soothe your skin. Stay hydrated When it comes to facial redness water is your best friend. Staying hydrated helps maintain your skin's natural moisture balance. It's like giving your skin a drink of water from the inside out. You’ll also want to up the anti when it comes to nourishing your skin topically. Make sure you moisturise twice a day and add a hydrating serum into your daily routine too.Try: Pevonia Hyaluronic Acid Hydra Serum. Featuring one of the highest concentrations of hyaluronic acid on the skincare market, its honestly like a burst of nourishment for the skin. And combined with a powerful duo of marine collagen and hibiscus esculentus extract it also provides optimum anti-ageing results. It penetrates deeply into the skin delivering smoother, calmer, softer, plumper, firmer and brighter skin! What’s more it’s ideal for all skin types! Wear mineral makeup WE totally understand that when you suffer from rosacea or skin redness you aren’t likely to forego makeup altogether. You do need to let your skin breath freely to reduce irritation though so its essential to opt for mineral makeup that will allow just this. Mineral makeup is non-comedogenic which means it won’t clog your pores.Try: ELES Mineral Powder Foundation. As a sufferer of want for a better word ‘flushed skin’ I personally LOVE the best-selling ELES Mineral Powder Foundation! It’s one of my all-time favourites. It’s one of the most natural-looking, if not THE most natural-looking foundations I have in fact ever tried and being in the industry for 20 years I’ve tried many! It contains zero chemical nasties, instead, it’s packed with skin loving ingredients including vitamins A & E, can be used as a buildable foundation from natural sheer to polished opaque (dependant on what you need) and it’s highly compatible with common skin sensitivities, working wonders at camouflaging facial redness while protecting skin against ultraviolet damage too!Another good option is to try a colour corrector which will help visually correct redness and even out skin tone at the same time. Using one with UV protection will also help shield your sensitive skin from exposure that can aggravate skin sensitivities.Try: ELES Luminous CC Cream SPF 20. It’s a game changer when it comes to colour correcting red skin! It’s a lightweight, oil-free, colour correcting cream with broad spectrum protection that really does multi-task like no other! And while it’s technically not a foundation, the full coverage pigments cover facial redness—be it from rosacea, pimples, irritation, you name it—so well that you very well may be able to get away without wearing any other makeup. Be sunscreen savvy Sunscreen isn't just for sunny days. UV rays can exacerbate redness and inflammation. Opt for a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30 and apply it religiously, even on cloudy days.Try: ELES Luminous Defence Brightening Day Protection SPF 50. We understand that so many sunscreens feel greasy, don’t smell great or simply don’t sit well on our skin, and then there are those thick white sunscreens that look like a paste when applied too, the last thing you want to be worried about when your skin is already a little on the sensitive side. That’s why we love ELES Luminous Defence. It’s not greasy but instead silky soft, the scent isn’t unpleasant, and it applies beautifully to my skin. And thanks to its formulation its helps nourish and restore skins luminosity too, not to mention it’s high SPF of 50. Wear a soothing mask If your skin redness is potentially caused by dryness or inflammation a natural face mask or sheet mask specifically formulated to cool and calm skin can work wonders.Try: ELES Calming and Soothing Sheet Mask. Incorporating natural botanicals it soothes and reduces inflammation. Like a cool balm, this calming mask reduces redness and heat and restores a protective barrier to prevent moisture loss. Manage your stress Easier said than done I know! Especially if you are juggling life, kids, work….but stress can be a big trigger for facial redness so its important to incorporate stress management techniques into your daily routine. Try meditation, yoga or simply taking time out for yourself to relax and unwind whether that’s going for walks, reading a book or simply having time out in from of the tv. I highly recommend the app Headspace for meditation. And for some soothing sounds try ambient relaxation music on Spotify. Bliss. Choose your skincare products wisely Check the ingredients list of the skincare products you purchase. You want to steer clear of products containing alcohol or fragrances which can exacerbate redness and instead opt for products specifically targeted for sensitive skin which include soothing ingredients such as aloe vera, chamomile, green tea or niacinamide. These can help cool and calm any inflammation as well as reduce your facial redness. Consider topical creams If you know that the redness on your skin is caused by rosacea, you can also look to certain skincare ranges to treat your symptoms.Try: Pevonia’s best-selling RS2 line. It can help soothe the skin as well as successfully elevating the symptoms. Revise your diet Underlying facial redness can actually be related to what you eat so making simple changes to your diet can make all the difference. We recommend an anti-inflammatory diet, which includes green leafy vegetables, fish, essential oils, and low-glycemic fruits. Try to give simple sugars, grains, non-organic meats, dairy, and high-glycemic fruits a miss..and avoid triggers such as spicy foods, citrus, tomato, chocolate, and cinnamon. Make lifestyle changes While facial redness can be a frustrating problem, the cause can often be more than skin deep. This means that the solution can require certain lifestyle changes in addition to the steps mentioned above. Try decreasing sun exposure, don’t go walking in the wind! If you smoke, don’t! Stop drinking all the hot drinks and make sure you drink cold water when ever you are exercising. Remember to be patient and consistent when managing facial redness and don't get discouraged if you don't see immediate results.

How to protect your skin from pollution

by Jo Boyden on Sep 08 2023
We all know that the sun’s UV rays can wreak havoc on our skin, but are we all aware of how damaging pollution can be too? We’re talking everything from soot, dust or smoke to even smaller specs, which cannot be seen by the naked eye!If you’ve ever suffered from dull, devitalised skin, blotchiness and breakouts, discolouration, inflammation and premature ageing even, chances are it could be the result of pollution, and if you live in an urban area like me, there is sadly no escaping it! The good news however, is you can take many measures to protect your skin from it, keep reading as we reveal them all. Smart Cleansing I’m certain when I say we all cleanse our skin daily, but cleansing your skin properly (not aggressively) each night is an essential when it comes to protecting your skin from pollution. While pollutants can be like cell munching monsters that stick to the skin like velcro, a great cleanser, used gently will help remove them and still maintain your skin’s natural barrier. And the great news is there are cleansers that have been designed specifically to target pollution. They thoroughly remove dirt, grime, makeup, pollution and impurities, but do not strip the skin like harsher cleansers can.Consider a double cleansing routine too if your wear makeup everyday, starting with an oil-based cleanser followed by Phytomer Souffle Marin Cleansing Foaming Cream. Formulated with depolluting armeria maritima, an anti-pollution marine sugar and oligomer (seawater concentrate rich in minerals and trace elements), it cleanses, purifies, and invigorates the skin with a beautifully fresh, clean feeling. Effective exfoliation Just cleansing your face is likely not enough to remove all the polluting particles once they have entered your pores which is why you need a good exfoliating cleanser too! Cue award winning product Phytomer CITYLIFE Ultra Cleansing Flash Peel. This is the first of its kind, a pollution defence deep cleanser. Power packed with a high concentration of exfoliating enzymes, it leaves the skin healthy, purified, smooth, soft and with an incredible glow. Love. Skin barrier boost Your skin has its own protective barrier, but it could use some reinforcements. Look for an added boost of hydration and antioxidants like vitamin C, vitamin E and niacinamide, in the form of a serum or concentrate. These superheros fight off free radicals and help further repair skin damage caused by pollution.Try Phytomer Oligo 6 Marine Concentrate with Vitamins, Prebiotic Complex and Trace Elements which includes vitamins C, E, B and B3, Phytomer’s marine prebiotic complex and OLIGOMER®, to effectively help fight free radicals on the skins surface. This moisturising gel really is the perfect antidote for tired, dull complexions. You’ll love the way it rebalances, hydrates and boosts lacklustre skin (as well as protecting it of course!) Sun protection Never, ever underestimate the power of sunscreen! Sunscreen not only shields your skin from harmful UV rays but also acts as a protective barrier against pollution. Opt for a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher and wear it daily, even on cloudy days! Face Mask Treat yourself to a detoxifying face mask once or twice a week. Your skin will thank you for it! Clay masks, charcoal masks and masks with activated charcoal can help draw out impurities and pollutants from your pores. The face mask we can’t recommend more highly is Phytomer Radiance Reviving Mask with Clay. It combines 100% natural red and white clays, blue microalgae, red algae and a comprehensive depolluting complex of 3 marine sugars, and instantly unclogs pores and counters the effects of pollution (dehydration, signs of fatigue, dark spots and a dull complexion!) Want your skin to look less tired and to recover its original radiance? Try this! Hydrate, inside and out When we talk about skin and hydration we aren’t just talking about moisturising, it’s about maintaining your skins natural barrier. You want to protect your skin as best you can! Remember to drink water like it’s going out of fashion and apply your moisturiser religiously as it can help in lock that much needed moisture as well as create a protective layer on your skin. Better still look for a moisturiser specifically formulated to combat the effects of pollution. We love Phytomer Citylife Face and Eye Contour Sorbet Cream. With its Citysafe complex (a trio of anti-oxidant biotech marine sugars) and Oligomer, it literally sweeps away toxic micro-particles and repairs skin damage caused by pollution! Even better, its suitable for face and eyes, re-oxygenating tired, dull and dehydrated skin. And finally, don’t skip on an antioxidant-rich diet! Weve talked about antioxidants in your skincare, but a diet rich in antioxidants can also do wonders for your skin, especially if you’re living in an urban area. Be sure to load up on colourful fruits and veggies, and add nuts and fatty fish into the equation too. These are the best foods to provide your body with the tools it needs to fight free radicals and repair skin damage! So, the long and the short of it is pollution is bad, antioxidants are good and implementing these protective measures into your daily routine can help your skin stay healthy.
under eye crepiness

Top tips to improve under eye crepiness

by Jo Boyden on Sep 01 2023
If like me, you’re in your 40’s (or older), you may have fallen victim to under eye crepiness – that undesirable loose, wrinkled skin that can make you look tired, but also older than you actually are! This is because as we age the collagen and elastin levels in our skin starts to decline, as it does the delicate skin around our eyes (one of the first and most prevalent areas to show premature ageing) becomes dryer and thinner, and well crepey! Luckily all is not lost though! There are a number of steps you can take to improve its appearance, and we aren’t talking chemical peels, dermal fillers, laser and Botox, no siree, we are all about natural, non-intrusive alternatives. Keep reading as we reveal them all!Firstly though, why might you be more susceptible to under eye crepiness? The most common cause of fine lines, wrinkles and crepey skin under your eyes is unfortunately ageing, which can of course be influenced by genetics (thank you Mum and Dad!) But other common contributing factors which may be possible to avoid include;UV radiation – exposure to UV rays accelerates the breakdown of collagen leading to premature ageing, this is why it’s essential to protect our peepers! If you don’t wear sunnies every single day like you do your sunscreen, you should now!Smoking – smoking exposures your skin to extra oxidative stress, in turn damaging its collagen and elastin. Smoking also constricts the blood vessels under your eyes by blocking circulation to your blood vessels and depriving your skin of necessary vitamin A.Environmental factors - environmental factors, such as dry weather, wind, and pollution can all contribute to undereye ageing.Pulling repetitive expressions – well I’m definitely guilty of this! Facial expressions, like smiling, frowning, and furrowing your brow, can cause fine lines to develop prematurely around your delicate eye area. Eek!Even the way we sleep can have a negative impact on our eyes! What you might say? Yup, if you sleep with your face buried in your pillow (guilty as charged) you are likely to be more prone to premature fine lines, wrinkles and eye crepiness, than those that don’t! Aghhh. How can you improve undereye crepiness?Although crepey skin will not disappear overnight, it can be drastically improved with time, the right anti-aging products, as well as lifestyle changes. It can take weeks or even months to see results, but by following these top 10 tips you can bid adieu to that saggy, sullen, crepey skin under your eyes. Stay hydrated. All. The. Time. Yes, you’ve heard it a million times before, drink all the water. Hydration is key my friends. Make sure you are drinking enough water throughout the day (we’re talking 8 glasses minimum). When you drink water, it’s like giving your skin a drink from the inside out too (and that water has to nourish all your other vital organise too! Treat sunscreen like is your BFF Never underestimate the power of sunscreen. Those harmful UV rays are a major contributor to premature aging. So, slather on that sunscreen every morning, even on cloudy days. Your future self will thank you!Not a huge fan of sunscreen? We get it. Soo many sunscreens feel greasy, don’t smell great or simply don’t sit well on our skin, and then there are those thick white sunscreens that look like a paste when applied too! That’s why we love the ELES Luminous Defence Brightening Day Protection SPF 50. It’s not greasy but instead silky soft, the scent isn’t unpleasant, and it applies beautifully to my skin. And thanks to its formulation its helps nourish and restore skins luminosity too, not to mention it’s high SPF of 50! Invest in an eye cream rich in hyaluronic acid and use it day and night Investing in a good quality eye cream that's packed with hydrating and skin-loving ingredients including hyaluronic acid and peptides will do wonders for ageing eyes. Gently pat the product around your eyes morning and night for that extra boost of moisture and optimal results. For more on the benefits of using hyaluronic acid under your eyes and our 3 favourite eye treatments click here. Add a gemstone facial roller to your daily beauty routine The roller will, not only help reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles around the eyes, when used correctly, it can dramatically reduce puffiness by moving excess fluid around your eyes towards your lymph nodes where it filters out the toxins too. Cool right? To find out more about the facial rollers and how to use them click here. Introduce tea time for your eyes Tea isn’t just for drinking you know, it’s also good for soothing your eyes too! Try placing cold tea bags (caffeine free, herbal tea is best!) on your closed eyes for a few minutes. The tannins in tea can help tighten the skin and reduce puffiness too! Consider practicing eye massage Light massage with your ring finger can improve bloody circulation and actually help your skin appear smoother. Remember gentle, gentle though as applying too much pressure to already thin, delicate skin can have the adverse effect! Give your eyes a rest from screen time Increased time in front of your laptop and on your phone can reap havoc with your precious peepers. In fact, spending just two consecutive hours on a digital device can cause eyestrain or fatigue while overexposure to blue light also suppresses the release of melatonin, the hormone that regulates sleep, therefore disrupting our normal sleep pattern. And we all know poor sleep can lead to premature ageing, especially around the delicate eye area! Make healthy lifestyle choices Your overall health reflects on your skin, including the delicate eye area. Eat a balanced diet rich in antioxidants, vitamins, and omega-3 fatty acids. And if you're a smoker, consider kicking the habit – smoking accelerates skin aging like nobody's business. Using gentle cleansing is a must Be kind to your skin when you cleanse but also never skip on cleansing, it’s a must, just be sure to use a gentle, hydrating cleanser that doesn't strip away your skin's natural oils. Harsh cleansers can contribute to dryness and crepiness. Try Medicalia’s Gentle Cleanser. Introduce cold compress magic Incorporate cold compresses into your routine. Applying a cold, damp cloth or chilled spoons over your eyes for a few minutes can help reduce puffiness and refresh your skin. Keep skin hydrated Invest in a good hydrating mist. A quick spritz throughout the day can give your skin the moisture it craves, helping to minimize crepiness. We love Pevonia’s Hyaluronic Acid Hydra Mist. It’s one of my all time favourites. Make sure you get enough Zzzz’s Beauty sleep is real people! After all it’s not dubbed beauty sleep for nothing! Make sure you're getting enough restful sleep each night. Elevate your head slightly with an extra pillow to prevent fluid from pooling around your eyes, which can lead to puffiness and crepiness. Upgrade your pillow case If you are one for sleeping with your face in the pillow, you might want to consider switching up your cotton pillowcase to a silk or satin alternative instead.Silk has natural moisturising properties to retain moisture around the eyes. The dense weave of the silky-smooth fibres also keep moisture close to your skin, this extra moisture can help to reduce dark circles, fine lines and wrinkles.Just remember, Rome wasn’t built in day, and your under-eye skin won’t transform overnight either sadly (if only!) Be patient and be religious with these steps and you’ll be waking up to smoother, brighter and younger looking eyes soon!

Beauty Collective - healthy glowing skin

These are the dos and don’ts for achieving healthy, glowing skin

by Jo Boyden on Mar 23 2023
We all strive for flawless perfect skin, that beautifully youthful and healthy complexion free of blemishes, dark spots and other signs of ageing, but achieving truly healthy skin requires us to pay consistent care and attention to our skin’s needs, and we aren’t just about our morning skincare routine. There are in fact a multitude of steps we should be taking to help our skin daily. Here are the dos and don’ts to keeping skin looking and feeling great day in and day out. DO cleanse skin every day Cleansing skin is a MUST. In fact, cleansing is the most important step in your skincare routine. Cleansing helps to remove excess oil, dirt and dead skin sitting on your skin’s surface which can contribute to the development of skin problems like spots if left! Daily cleansing also helps to balance your skin’s pH levels which can prevent dryness and irritation. Cleansing will also help enhance product absorption! This means those products such as your moisturiser and serum will be able to penetrate your skin much more effectively and provide maximum benefits! To learn more about the importance of cleansing and how a great cleanser will improve your skin tenfold click here. DO hydrate your skin morning and night Everything we do always takes hydration out of our skin. Wearing makeup, applying cleansers, sweating, drinking alcohol, and the sun! all take moisture out of our skin so it’s super important to not only drink water but to use hydrating products daily too! Make sure you invest in quality hydrating moisturisers, serums and cleansers that will replenish skin with moisture and not dry it out more! And for extra efficiency and penetration of active ingredients remember to moisturise while your skin is still damp after your shower. DO apply sunscreen every. single. day. All year round. It’s easy to think why bother with sunscreen on days when it's a little overcast or raining even, but as I’ve preached many a time before, sunscreen isn’t just a summertime skincare product when it’s hot and the sky is blue, the sun is always there and has the ability to penetrate through those clouds no matter how thick they are! It’s important to remember that wearing sunscreen is THE best protection against skin ageing. Oh, and if you are staying indoors, and happen to work next to a window like me, the sun has the ability to penetrate through the glass to your skin too!And then there is the issue of blue light damage. To read all about it click here. But in short, just like the sun, your devices omit harmful ‘blue light’ rays, so it’s important to wear sunscreen to protect skin against them too! DO exercise regularly Exercising regularly is not only important for your body and overall health and wellbeing, it can also improve the health of your skin. Exercise improves blood circulation and oxygenation to the skin, which in turn helps nourish skin cells and keep them vital. In addition to providing oxygen, blood flow also helps carry away waste products, including free radicals, from working skin cells. So in short regular exercise will keep your skin more supple and youthful in appearance it also imparts a healthy glow! DO eat a healthy, balanced diet with plenty of fruits, vegetables and whole grains Fruits and veggies contain powerful antioxidants which help protect our skin from free radical damage (triggered by smoke, pollution etc). When free radicals overpower our skin they trigger oxidative stress which can impact our skin presenting in the form of fine lines, wrinkles, dull, uneven skin tone, dark spots and skin sagging – eek! So make sure you eat that rainbow of fruits and veggies each day and keep premature skin ageing away! DO try to get 8 hours of sleep a night We don’t call it ‘beauty sleep’ for nothing! When we sleep our skin repairs itself, producing collagen and the more collagen produced means skin is plumper and less likely to wrinkle! If we’re sleep-deprived, not only will we wake with dark under-eye circles and bags, but we are also more likely to experience skin irritation, dehydration, fine lines, and dare I say blemishes! Us adults need a minimum of 7 hours of restful slumber a night, 8 preferred! Just be sure you switch off any electronics an hour or so before a practice some relaxation techniques! DO drink at least 6-8 glasses of water a day Water is essential for healthy skin. It flushes out toxins and helps maintain your skin’s elasticity (which keeps it looking younger!) Those who drink more water are less likely to suffer from premature ageing as those who drink little amounts of water daily!Drinking ample amounts of water also helps balance your skin’s oil and water content which in turn helps to prevent excess oil and sebum secretion (meaning fewer clogged pores and less chances of getting spots!)It’s important to remember though that our skin is the last of our organs to receive water and nutrients so plenty of it daily is a must! DO exfoliate your skin at least once a week even if it’s on the sensitive side Weekly exfoliation is a must to remove dead skin cells and promote cell turnover. If the dead skin cells aren’t removed they can get trapped leading to clogged pores and unwanted spots. You might be afraid to exfoliate if your skin is on the sensitive side but that’s ok there are amazing sensitive skin exfoliators out there for you! You just need to steer clear of physical exfoliants and opt for gentle enzyme exfoliators that don’t contain granules. These earth-sourced ingredients essentially dissolve dead skin cells as opposed to physically scrubbing them off.For more on what to do when it comes to exfoliating sensitive skin click here. But DON’T over exfoliate your skin Over-exfoliating skin can strip it of natural oils and lead to dryness and irritation. To learn more about the impact of over-exfoliated skin click here. DON’T overload your skin with products From cleansers to exfoliators, serums, moisturisers, masks, oils and more, it is easy to get carried away with skincare and believe that buying and applying all the products will be best for your skin! The problem is overloading it, particularly when you are using too many actives in your products can actually be detrimental and result in dryness, irritation and redness! Instead, listen to your skin! The best approach is to understand your own individual needs rather than just adding layers of products because you are under the misconception that using them all will deliver optimum skin results!Remember if you are prone to sensitive skin simplicity is key, if you have an oily complexion cleansing, toning and a light mattifying moisturiser can be enough, and if your skin tends to be on the dry side, then a serum, moisturiser, mist and face oil to lock moisture in will be beneficial. Also, if you are adding in new steps to your skincare routine, do so one product at a time so that your skin has time to adjust. DON’T overdo your makeup Who doesn’t love wearing a bit of makeup, it can totally transform the way we look and feel after all, but overdoing it is a no no. Not because it might look OTT but because of the effect it can have on your skin. Depending on your skin type, excessive makeup can clog your pores leading to breakouts. Plus the chemicals in some makeup products can dry out your skin leaving it looking dull, dehydrated and depleted. A solution is to use healthy makeup formulations packed with skin loving ingredients like mineral makeup. DON’T use hot water when washing your face or taking a shower Hot water can strip your skin of its natural oils and in turn cause excessive dryness. Instead, use lukewarm water. DON’T leave your makeup on when going to bed I’m sure we’ve ALL been guilty of going to bed with our makeup on once or even many a time! Especially when we are exhausted after the daily juggle, or perhaps have had one too many and ooh how that bed looks so inviting but removing the day's makeup and grime off your face is a must! In fact not cleansing before bed means your skin is unable to regenerate effectively while you sleep, so pores clog, blemishes become more apparent, and fatigue (ageing!) signs start to appear. DON’T drink too much alcohol Many of us might love a margarita with friends or that big glass of red of an evening but sadly excessive alcohol consumption can dehydrate your skin and contribute to wrinkles and other skin issues, so try and limit your weekly alcohol consumption. DON’T smoke Smoking can accelerate the ageing process! It can damage collagen and elastin in your skin which leads to the formation of wrinkles and other signs of ageing. DON’T stress too much Stress can lead to skin problems like acne and eczema so managing stress levels through relaxation techniques like meditation, yoga and deep breathing can be essential for skin health.
Which order should you apply your skincare?

Which order should you apply your skincare?

by Jo Boyden on Nov 24 2022
With the ever-growing number of lotions and potions on the market from cleansers to toners, serums to oils, day to night creams and more, it’s no wonder there is confusion around which products are really necessary for our skin, let alone which order you should apply your skincare! Here’s the thing, we all have unique skin needs, dependant on our skin type and concern, so it’s important to create our own skincare ‘cocktail’ based on these specific needs! But if we use the wrong products (not everyone for example can tolerate AHA’s), pair two products together that are formulated with ingredients that don’t ‘gel’, or do not wear our skincare in the correct order, we just won’t see the results we are hoping for, or worse could wind up with blotchy, irritated skin instead. Eek.So to save time, stress and money! We have detailed below the exact order you should apply your skincare so you can get the most out of it! Along with what products and ingredients to use for your skin type and concern too! Cleanser Toner Serum Eye Cream Treatment (eg. Spot) Moisturiser Sunscreen (day) Face Oil (night) Step 1: CLEANSERCleansing daily is essential for skin health and the first step to layering skincare like a pro for optimum results. And despite conflicting views cleansing twice daily is imperative.Firstly, you need to cleanse at night to remove the days dirt, makeup and impurities. Then again in the morning to remove any excess oil and dead cells that are likely to have accumulated on your skin overnight. Without cleansing, your skin will be more prone to breakouts, dehydration, and premature aging. And remember you need a clean, oil and grime free face for all your skincare ingredients to properly absorb into your skin!At night opt for a cleansing oil that literally dissolves makeup (including waterproof!) without stripping your skin then follow with a gentle, creamy cleaner (which you should use in the morning too). Serums actually tend to perform above and beyond many regular skincare products because they are formulated with a higher concentration of targeted active ingredients and have the ability to penetrate deeper into the dermis. In fact it’s essential we our eye area the same level of TLC as the rest of our face! This step needs to come before your moisturiser because thinner products can’t penetrate thicker products and eye care products tend to be lighter and thinner than moisturisers to compensate for the fragile eye area.Try;Phytomer Pionniere XMF Reset Eye Fluid – anti-ageing wonder cream, perfect for night-time.Vie Collection Chrono Eyes Puffiness – Dark Circles Wrinkle Cream – the best to combat eye ageing, dark circles and under eye puffiness.Pevonia “C” Evolutive Eye Gel - formulated with anti-ageing dynamo Vitamin C and skin saviours’ hyaluronic acid and Ginkgo biloba, this gel is perfect is cooling and soothing congested and puffy peepers.Step 5: MOISTURISERA moisturiser not only infuses your skin with hydration but also helps trap in all of the products underneath it to make the ingredients even more effective. In the morning opt for a lighter, gentle moisturiser that will nourish and hydrate skin but not feel heavy or greasy (after all who wants that!) This is because the oil takes a while to penetrate and treat the skin, so applying it at night gives it time to do its job. skincare mistakes

10 skincare mistakes you could be making and how to fix them

by Jo Boyden on Aug 19 2022
You’re a stickler when it comes to your skincare routine, you eat an antioxidant rich diet, drink plenty of water and make sure you exercise daily, yet still your skin is dull and lifeless, or perhaps you’re finding yourself constantly prone to pesky pimples, or dryness even? If this is you, chances are you could be doing a few things wrong when it comes to your skincare and believe me, you’d not be the first! Keep reading as we count down 10 common skincare mistakes you may well be making and how to fix them! You are overloading your skin From cleansers to exfoliators, serums, moisturisers, masks, oils and more, it is easy to get carried away with skincare and believe that buying and applying all the products will be best for your skin! The problem is overloading it, particularly when you are using too many actives in your products can actually be detrimental and result in dryness, irritation and redness! The fix: Listen to your skin! The best approach is to understand your own individual needs rather than just adding layers of products because you are under the misconception that using them all will deliver optimum skin results! Remember if you are prone to sensitive skin simplicity is key, if you have an oily complexion cleansing, toning and a light mattifying moisturiser can be enough, and if your skin tends to be on the dry side, then a serum, moisturiser, mist and face oil to lock moisture in will be beneficial. Also, if you are adding in new steps to your skincare routine, do so one product at a time so that your skin has time to adjust. You are using toxic ingredients You think you’ve invested in a moisturiser that will deliver beautifully bright and blemish free results but it’s actually packed with toxins that can irritate skin, leading to reactions and more! Sadly, the products you put on your skin aren’t always safe. So many skincare products are formulated with toxic ingredients including Parabens, Phthalates, Triclosan, chemical sunscreen filter and synthetic fragrance. The fix: Choose natural skincare products, they’ll contain zero toxic nasties and always be aware of what you are buying, don’t just fall for the marketing hype! You aren’t updating your skincare as your skin changes with age You might have been loyal to the same moisturiser for many years but sadly the skincare you’ve used in your 20’s really won’t cut it in your 30’s, 40’s and beyond. This is because as we age our skin’s needs dramatically change. Skin becomes thinner, drier, more sensitive, and loses elasticity as collagen and elastin start to deplete, while fine lines and wrinkles start to form. The fix: As you start to age look for anti-ageing skincare rich in ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, collagen, and vitamin C. For more info on this read about the top 5 skincare ingredients as recommended by the experts and adjust your products accordingly. You are skipping your moisturiser because your skin is oily or prone to blemishes It’s that time of the month and a few pesky pimples have reared their ugly head, or you are often prone to adult acne or simply suffer from oily skin, so think it best to lay off the moisturiser which must be exacerbating the issue right? Wrong. The fix: While you are likely not alone in thinking lathering up on moisturiser seems counterproductive, everyone, no matter what your skin type or concern, needs to apply a moisturiser daily! When searching for the right moisturiser for your skin type they do tend to be categorised by skin concern so you just need to research and find the right one for your skin’s needs. Just be sure to opt for lighter moisturisers by day, especially in the warmer months, and richer creams at night. For oily skin types, we highly recommend Phytomer’s Oligopur Hydra Matifying Control Cream. It’s an ultra-light cream that controls oil and breakthrough shine throughout the day. No shine, no greasy feeling, no heaving feeling! If your skin is prone to pimples try Phytomer Acnipure Blemish Solution Fluid, it’s a lightweight gel-cream that fights acne without clogging pores or irritating skin. It also helps eliminate shine, diminishes the appearance of blemishes, and prevents future breakouts!! You are over exfoliating or not exfoliating enough As we age our skin’s natural ability to shed dead cells declines, our pores can get clogged and skin can become uneven, dull, lacklustre and spotty even! This is why exfoliation is so imperative, and not a step that should be ignored even if you are prone to acne or suffer from sensitive skin!I’m not talking daily exfoliation though! Just once or twice a week depending on your skin type will suffice, as too much exfoliation can be counterproductive! This is because exfoliators, especially physical ones with granules or beads can damage the outer most layer of your skin when overused. One sign of over exfoliating is skin hypersensitivity. This can cause irritation, breakouts, and even a stinging feeling when you apply products! Eek.The fix: Understand your skin and choose your exfoliator accordingly. We highly recommend Pevonia’s Clarigel Exfoliating Cleanser for blemish prone skin. It combines soapwort, Triclosan, Grapefruit Oil, Salicylic Acid and Citric Acid with Jojoba to gently remove impurities and delivers an intense exfoliating and deep cleansing experience! If your skin is a little on the sensitive side, just be sure to opt for a super gentle formula – I LOVE Pevonia’s Gentle Exfoliating Cleanser, it gently polishes your skin with its unique creamy, granular texture. But if granules scare you, I also highly recommend Phytomer’s Vegetal Exfoliant with Natural Enzymes. It’s a soft exfoliant for even the most sensitive or rosacea prone skin and uses natural enzymes to encourage cell turnover without scrubbing or irritating your skin. You are not wearing sunscreen daily, all year round It’s easy to think why bother with sunscreen if we are in the middle of winter but as I’ve preached many a time before, sunscreen isn’t just a summertime skincare product, it’s necessary to religiously wear it All. Year. Round. Why? Because it is THE best protection against skin ageing. Oh, and if you are staying indoors, and happen to work next to a window like me, the sun has the ability to penetrate the glass and your skin too!And then there is the issue of blue light damage. To read all about it click here. But in short, just like the sun, your devices omit harmful ‘blue light’ rays, so it’s important to wear sunscreen to protect skin against them too!The fix: Sunscreens formulated with iron oxides provide enhanced protection against blue light, especially when combined with zinc oxide. A new favourite of mine is Medicalia’s Sunscreen SPF 30 with Blue Light Shield. If you’re a little reluctant to wear your sunscreen because quite frankly its smell and greasy texture puts you off, you are going to love this lightweight emulsion! This everyday sunscreen contains an exclusive mineral formula to shield skin from harmful sun rays, blue light and pollution. It delivers all-natural protection with the addition of zinc oxide which acts to form a protective seal over the skin to reflect blue light away. It also rubs into skin seamlessly without leaving a white cast or greasy residue behind. And even better, the formula is reef-safe and works for all skin types and tones! You are taking daily hot showers and baths Who doesn’t love soaking in a boiling bubble bath or indulging in a long hot shower every evening? But do you know how detrimental this actually is for your skin? Hot showers and baths can actually inflame the skin, causing redness, itching, and even peeling. They also can disrupt the skin's natural balance of moisture, robbing you of the natural oils that keep skin healthy. Eek.The Fix: To keep skin happy, healthy and supple, reduce time spent in the shower or bath, keep water to a warm temperature and always apply moisturiser immediately after while skin is still damp. By doing so will prevent damage, dryness, irritation, and itchiness. You are not using your retinol cream correctly We all know retinol is THE no. one ingredient when it comes to combatting skin ageing. The hero ingredient multi tasks like no other. Known for its ability to empower and enhance skin cellular performance it dramatically improves fine lines and wrinkles while repairing sun-damaged and mature skin. It’s also a free radical fighter! Who wouldn’t want to introduce this multitasking miracle ingredient into their daily life! But you need to know how to use it! Using it incorrectly can unfortunately have ramifications. The fix: Because retinol is unstable when exposed to heat and light avoid using it in your morning skincare routine, instead apply before bed. I'll ntroduce it slowly. Apply it only at night, one or two times a week for the first week and gradually increase application. Also it’s best not to layer your retinol cream with other potent ingredients such as your acids. And finally, give the product time to work its magic. This could take a few months, but the results are worth it. We promise! To learn more about this anti-ageing wonder ingredient click here. You are mixing skincare ingredients that are no compatible I’m certain many of us will have mixed our skincare products without knowing that some ingredients do not complement each other, in fact some combinations can actually counteract each other! These ingredients such as vitamin C, retinol, benzoyl peroxide, AHA’s and BHA’s are simply better suited on their own and can be detrimental to skin when mixed or layered leading to irritation, redness or just general lack of desired results! (Unless of course they’ve been carefully placed in the same product by the clever scientists!)The fix: Let your retinol, vitamin c, benzoyl peroxide, AHA’s and BHA’s be the star of their own show. This doesn’t mean you can’t use your retinol cream and your vitamin c serum! Just use the serum in the morning and your retinol cream at night! Also focus on the combinations that can be mixed! These include; Hyaluronic acid and most ingredients! SPF and vitamin c, AHA’s and BHA’s, vitamin c and vitamin e, retinol and SPF. You are not cleansing your face before bed I’m sure we’ve ALL been guilty of this once or many a time! Especially when we are exhausted after the daily juggle, or perhaps have had one too many and ooh how that bed looks so inviting but removing the days makeup and grime off your face is a must! In fact not cleansing before bed means your skin is unable to regenerate effectively while you sleep, pores clog, and fatigue (ageing!) signs start to appear. The fix: For a fantastic makeup remover which effectively melts away makeup and grime with minimum effort try Phytomer’s Doux Contour Eye and Lip Waterproof Makeup Remover. Combining the effectiveness of an oil (a trio of oils in fact) and the gentleness of a lotion, this ultra-hydrating makeup remover, eradicates even the most stubborn of lips and eye makeup fast! And my absolute favourite cleanser at the moment is Pevonia’s new CleanRefresh Foaming Oil Cleanser. Its oil formulation transforms into a luscious foamy cleanser on application when mixed with water and it leaves skin feeling fantastically refreshed and beautifully clean without the drying effects that other cleansers can leave. Plus its subtle scent is just heavenly. To read more about sleeping in makeup and what it really does to our skin click here.
