Self-isolating? It’s time to change up your skincare routine. Here’s why

by Jo Boyden on Apr 07 2020
In this time of social distancing, many of us are being responsible and choosing to stay home, while this is imperative for our safety remaining indoors for extended periods of time can however impact our skin and in turn lead to skin damage! So use this time in quarantine to get your skincare routine down pat. What worked for your skin weeks ago might now need some tweaking and we are here to tell you why. Spending more time on your phone, laptop or in front of your TV than ever before? Yes siree! But did you know the effect extended amounts of screen time can have on your skin?Unfortunately, your devices (now labelled the silent anti-agers of our generation!) emit ‘blue light’. This light creates a free radical that damages our DNA, by penetrating all the way to the dermis where our collagen and elastin live causing loss of firmness, increase in visible lines as well as inflammation and dark spots! Scary stuff. Your best defence? Targeted skincare and makeup products!Using products containing iron oxide can help neutralize and repair blue light damage. Try Pevonia’s Youth Renew Tinted Moisturiser or ELES Mineral Sheer Tint SPF 20.The skin naturally contains antioxidants. These are quickly damaged and depleted when exposed to free radicals. By applying a topical antioxidant containing Vitamins C and E you can assist in counteracting the damaging effecting of blue light. Try Medicalia C Serum with Oxyzomes which protects and infuses the antioxidant deep within the skin for maximum anti-free radical benefits and collagen-boosting effects.I also love Pevonia’s Stem Cells Phyto-Elite Intensive Cream. It is rich in Vitamins C, E, Marine Collagen and Retinol! It deeply repairs any damage caused to the skin, effectively minimising the most common signs of premature ageing. If you are one for usually wearing a lot of makeup, use this time to give your skin a bit of a rest. But don’t get me wrong, I am not saying go makeup-free! While you might not be socialising or have anyone at home to impress, following your usual daily skincare and makeup routine can actually provide a much-needed sense of normalcy in this otherwise abnormal existence we all suddenly find ourselves in! Instead simply opt for heathier formulations like mineral foundations, powders, and bronzers which actually enable your skin to breathe more freely while truly perfecting your complexion!Try ELES Cosmetic’s global best-seller Liquid Powder Mineral Foundation. Formulated with Vitamins A, C & E. it provides both flawless coverage and antioxidant protection. With a change in season brings a change to your skin. One of the biggest skin issues we tend to see this time of year is dryness.Like me, you’ve probably already been dealing with dry hands as a result of washing them constantly, now you are likely to be experiencing a dry, lacklustre complexion too.Make sure you moisturise your hands regularly, preferably after washing when they are still a little damp as the cream helps to trap in moisture. I have been using the Phytomer Oleocreme Ultra-Nourishing Hand Cream and have to say my hands feel (and even look!) amazing. The rich, silky cream soothes and softens dry skin. Integrating a hydrating duo of marine oils, it intensely nourishes, moisturises and comforts while protecting skin from external stress.I personally suffer from dry skin, more so than ever this time of year. So I have recently incorporated two additional products into my routine and the difference this has made to my skin is huge. In the mornings I alternate between using my faithful Pevonia Age Correction Intensifier Collagen and Myoxy Caviar followed by my Pevonia Age Correction Marine Collagen Cream (products rich in hyaluronic acid are known to promote moisture) OR my Phytomer Pionniere XMF Radiance Retexturizing Serum followed by Hydra Continue Radiance Energizing Cream. At night I drench my skin in the Pevonia Vitaminic Concentrate, the perfect overnight repair oil. It combats excessive dryness, dehydration, and premature aging. It’s important to use products with SPF in them even when you aren’t leaving the house. One product that should remain constant in your everyday routine is SPF. While you might not see the need for it now that you're spending the majority, if not all your time indoors, do not be deceived! UVA light from the sun’s rays can actually still penetrate right through window glass believe it or not! Plus while we are still allowed out every day for exercise, I encourage you to take advantage of that and soak up your daily quota of vitamin D. Not only is it good for your health, a daily dose of sunlight is imperative for your wellbeing too. For a fantastic lightweight everyday cream with SPF 30, I highly recommend the ELES Defence Brightening Day Protection SPF 50.

Suffering from skin sensitivity and facial flare-ups as a result of stress? Here’s how to manage it

by Jo Boyden on Apr 04 2020
Suffering from sensitive skin? Facial redness? Rosacea? You are not alone! Our skin can be a reflection of how we feel on the inside and now, more than ever due to these times of increased uncertainty and adjustment, we’ll be experiencing the results of stressed induced sensitive skin.If like many you’re feeling the impact of no longer being able to visit your trustee therapist to pull your skin through these tough times, know that all is not lost. There are a number of ways you can effectively relieve your symptoms so read on to learn how to get your skin back on track… Follow a set skincare routine and stick with it It’s so easy to become complacent with our daily skincare routine now we are at home all day, but maintaining a routine to best support your skin’s needs is still very necessary, even more so if you are experiencing skin irritations/flare-ups.How you look after your skin and what you put on it will have an effect on both the symptoms and the results you experience. Therefore for sensitive and rosacea-prone skin, ensure you use (or introduce) nurturing and relieving ingredients into your daily program.Ingredients such as Green Tea, Licorice and French Rose Essential Oil will effectively reduce flushing, skin irritation and rosacea while hydrating, calming and soothing the skin. One of our most loved skincare ranges (and a global favourite) is the Pevonia RS2 line. It has been specifically formulated for those with ultra-sensitive skin to desensitize and decongest, while effectively relieving Rosacea discomfort. “I’ve finally found a range that is good for my very sensitive, rosacea skin. It cools and calms my skin, my pores have shrunk and my skin is less blotchy after only 2 weeks of using all the products. Highly recommend the line.” Diana R Practice mindfulness Mindfulness can really help combat the stress-inducing effects of negative thinking which let’s face it, we are all consumed by ‘doom and gloom’ at the moment! There are several methods for increasing mindfulness a few of which include, mindfulness-based stress reduction, meditation, and yoga.I have to say I am a huge advocate for yoga, which is so easy to do from the comfort of your own home! If you don’t know any yoga moves but would love to give it a try, fear not! There are some great yoga apps and YouTube videos you can follow. And while my kids are being home-schooled they are loving starting their day with Cosmic Kids Yoga too! Win win for all! Try to avoid alcohol Currently in quarantine while working from home and home-schooling young kids? Alcohol might feel like a necessity for some (I hear you), but sadly that glass of wine or three can worsen your facial redness! While I’m not necessarily saying cut it out completely, you should cut down on the amount consumed while you are experiencing a flare-up. I promise you will notice a difference in your skin. Watch what you eat Certain foods can cause your skin to flush (or otherwise heat up!) try to avoid or at least reduce eating foods while your skin is bad. These foods include; oranges, strawberries, peanuts, cashews, and caffeine. Hot and spicy curries are also a no no!Whereas Vitamin A & C foods such as broccoli, sweet potato, carrots, and leafy greens will help strengthen the skin while foods such as salmon, almonds, and eggs rich in fatty acids help produce the skin’s natural oil barrier, critical in keeping skin hydrated, plumper, and younger-looking while protecting it from environmental irritants. Avoid strenuous exercise Unless you, like hundreds of thousands of others, have signed up to P.E with YouTube sensation Joe Wicks, being stuck at home doesn’t really allow for strenuous exercise, so use this time to take it easy, practice yoga, go for walks and put your feet up! Always use sun protection The sun is a trigger for rosacea and while you might think you are now getting little or next to no sun, believe it or not, sunlight can still penetrate through the windows so keep on it! The Pevonia Hydrating Sunscreen is perfect for those with super sensitive skin. It not only protects the skin against harmful rays it also nurtures the skin with hydrating ingredients Vitamin E, Green Tea, French Rose, and Aloe. “So pleased with the product’s performance - quality protection without upsetting my sensitive skin, no redness or reaction at all.” Francesca H Avoid extreme temperatures While that relaxing pampering bubble bath sounds like an excellent way to de-stress, soaking in a hot tub is a no go. Don’t give up on the bath idea all together as it really is one of the best stress relievers, especially in the absence of your favourite spa treat, just ensure you opt for cooler water and minimise your relaxation time. Listen to music Listening to music can have a very relaxing effect on the body and mind.Slow-paced instrumental music can induce the relaxation response by helping lower blood pressure and heart rate and well as stress hormones. Nature sounds can also be incredibly calming (and take you on a journey back to the spa!) but simply listening to the music you love can be equally as effective too. Make sleep a priority Who doesn’t feel better after a good night’s sleep? It makes a huge difference to our overall wellbeing but our “beauty sleep” is also very important for our skin and the key to a glowing complexion! But how exactly does sleep impact our skin? To find out more click here.Follow these essential tips and you could be suitably relaxed with red-free skin in next to no time!

Skincare is definitely the area to invest in when it comes to your beauty routine. I’m not just talking about investing your hard-earned money, but time and patience as well, especially when it comes to creating a routine that will actually work and provide you with the results you are seeking. But where do you really start? I apply this beautiful concentrate underneath my reactive care cream morning and night for "optimal" results....- Laura Leva, Customer Service VIE COLLECTION RENEWING EXFOLIATING CREAMFresh, silky-smooth skin is what you get from the Vie Collection’s Renewing Exfoliating Cream. Dermatologists Share Their Advice for Great Skin

by Jo Boyden on Jun 26 2019
Here at Beauty Collective HQ, we constantly receive a smorgasbord of questions from our customers, and while we are brimming with great tips, rituals and product recommendations, we too often seek advice from our esteemed suppliers and dermatologists alike. To learn about the skin-care tips these pros live by, read on…Use any downtime to do a skin treatment“I keep extra beauty treatments in my car in a little bag. When I'm in bad traffic (at a red light of course), I apply serum, an eye mask, teeth whitening strips, eyebrow gel, and more!" -Francesca Fusco, dermatologist.Ok, while we don’t recommend performing facials when in the car! We do agree that having the right products in the right places (think by the bed or by the hand basin) may encourage you to apply some of those products we often forget such as a good anti-ageing hand cream and a gorgeous eye and lip balm. We love Phytomer - Oleocreme Ultra-Nourishing Hand Cream for a daily dose of hydrating marine oils.Practice a facial massage to fight wrinkles"Many people (myself included) frown and scrunch their faces at night, leading to frown lines and crow’s feet. To relax my face, I do facial acupressure for a few minutes at bedtime. Press above your inner eyebrows, temples, and next to your nostrils, holding for 10 seconds each." –Jessica Wu, dermatologist. We agree there is nothing better for smoothing tension wrinkles than a soothing massage and we are all addicted to the Rosee Soin from Phytomer. It’s a heavenly dry oil that rejuvenates your skin, calms your senses and leaves skin super soft and hydrated. A few drops massaged onto a cleansed skin at night (you can do this while watching your favourite TV series) will smooth out any stress lines you’ve earned that day.Hydrate your skin from the inside out—and outside in"Despite what you hear all the time, the amount of water you drink daily doesn't translate into proper skin hydration. It's vital to hydrate your skin from the outside in with serums, creams, and hydrating mists." –Dendy Engelman, dermatologist. It’s very true and never so true as in Winter when artificial heating and a more sedentary lifestyle can leave our skin parched and thirsty. Our go-to for deep hydration is the Vie Collection - Wrinkle Dimension Hyaluronic Acid Concentrate. It attracts and binds water to the skin keeping it super soft and super supple. The perfect skin drink.Avoid hot showers that can be drying"I never wash my face with hot water–it is too harsh. Only tepid water at the sink." -Elizabeth Tanzi, clinical professor of dermatology.Gentle cleansing of the skin with warm (not hot) water is not only better for managing your skin’s natural pH but will also prevent moisture loss on a grand scale. To remove makeup and the days grime at night we all reach for the ELES - Transformation Cleansing Oil. It emulsifies foundation and binds impurities that can be washed away in water and leaves the skin balanced and soft and ready for your serums and creams.Apply sunscreen to your neck, chest, and hands first"Apply sunscreen to the neck, chest, and hands before the face–these areas age faster and are harder to improve than the face. We often forget to apply sunscreen there even though they're exposed as much as the face." –Doris Day, dermatologist. We absolutely agree with this one! Sunscreen is your bestie when it comes to anti-ageing skin care. Our favourite is the Medicalia - Sunscreen SPF 30. It’s lightweight and totally reliable and comes in a generous 150ml tube so there’s no excuse for leaving out your neck, chest and hands!Don't ever rub your eyes"If you rub your eyes like you are scrubbing a pot, your eyes will look black like a pot! When you're taking off eye makeup, gently wipe off mascara as if you're touching an egg." –Jeanine Downie, dermatologist.Very true and we agree that a good product to remove your eye makeup will mean you don’t have to rub, it will do all the work for you! Our go-to is Phytomer - Micellar Water Eye Makeup Removal Solution. It’s strong enough to remove waterproof makeup but gentle enough for even the most sensitive eyes.Let your lips guide your skin care routine."One tip to know when your skin is ready for seriously creamy moisturizers: Your lips feel dry first, so you know the humidity has dropped, and it's time for more moisture." –Ellen Marmur, dermatologist.Lips are a great indicator for hydration levels and we look after ours with Phytomer - Youth Contour Reviving Wrinkle Correction Cream –Eye and Lip. Not only does this wonderful multi-tasker protect our precious lips but also our delicate eye contours.Check the menu for skin-saving fatty acids"Your diet has a huge impact on your skin. Avoid starchy vegetables and refined carbohydrates like white bread and rice and instead opt for foods high in omega 3's and fatty acids like avocados and salmon to help give you that youthful glow." –Whitney Bowe, dermatologist.Fatty Acids are also a great addition to topical skin care and Phytomer - Hydracontinue Radiance Energizing Cream contains Buckthorn Pulp extract which is super-rich in Omega-7, a very rare essential fatty acid that stimulates cell metabolism and increases cell vitality.
Beauty Collective - Big Guns Anti-ageing

“Big Guns” skin care products

by Jo Boyden on Jun 03 2019
Just a few miles from the gorgeous Manly Beach in Sydney, our Beauty Collective Head Office is full of high-tech dermaceutical solutions, from powerful medical-based skin care to advanced cellulite products. And something you may not realise is that we are not just a retail supplier, we are one of Australia’s leading salon and spa suppliers and educators in the beauty industry. So what do our team use on their skin and why are some products the universal favourites with us and our clients? We share our “big guns” in the battle against skin ageing…Medicalia L-Retinol Smoothing CreamFormulated with Micro-Retinol® which works so much better than regular retinol, this fast-acting cream gives you astonishing visible results. It makes pores almost invisible, softens lines and wrinkles and fades hyperpigmentation. It uses Biomimetic technology, which is a fancy way of saying that it goes through a process that makes the formula almost identical to the oils and moisture produced by your skin, so it literally melts into the skin. Not a product to use year round as it has an exfoliating action and over-use can cause irritation, but perfect as a Winter treatment. Just use a small quantity each night (or alternate nights if you find it too stimulating) and enjoy smoother skin for months after.Phytomer Pioneer XMF CreamThere truly is no other cream on the market like this! It has won numerous International awards and is Phytomer’s No 1 seller. Often hailed as the professional version of Crème De La Mer. On the surface of the skin, it creates a biofilm for an instant smoothing effect and within the skin, it binds to the fibres in the dermis to densify them. Imagine your face is a cushion and this cream is the extra stuffing! We also are in love with the light silky texture of the cream, neither too rich or too light and the heavenly, soft aroma.Phytomer Celluli AttackHead and shoulders above the rest, this IS the best cellulite product on the market today. Most cellulite products use Green Coffee Extract to stimulate lipolysis (breakdown of fats), this formula uses Pepper Slimactiv which is 8 times stronger. And how is this for technology? Pepper Slimactiv is incorporated in a vectorized capsule that propels at high speed to the fat cells, avoiding any loss of ingredient on the way and is also combined with a signal peptide that enables it to exclusively target adipocytes and attack them with more power. Take that Cellulite! All you need to do is smooth it over cellulite areas, no need for massaging and within a month you begin to see results. We should probably point out that Phytomer has been the undisputable leader of cellulite treatment products in Europe since 1994!Vie Collection Chrono EyesNot sure about you but at Beauty Collective, we believe products should be multi-functional. So when we use an eye cream not only should it help prevent skin ageing it should also smooth fine lines, reduce dark circles and deal with unwanted eye puffiness. When this product came onto the market we switched over to it with no loyalty at all to our previously adored eye products. With a botox-like peptide to inhibit muscle action, low and high molecule hyaluronic which acts like a filler and vitamin C, B3 and Phytosterols to stimulate the circulation to deal with puffiness and dark circles can you really blame us? Now the top seller in the Vie Collection line here in Oz we feel sure we are not biased.Medicalia - Sunscreen SPF 30Last but certainly not least the biggest seller in our skin care arsenal is the Medicala Sunscreen. The MOST important anti-ageing product we should all be using is a broad spectrum (protects against both UVA and UVB rays) sunblock. We have discovered the only reason some don’t use sunblock despite knowing how important it is, is because they can’t stand the texture or smell. No more excuses, this feels like a lightweight moisturiser and smells divine. It won’t make your eyes water or cause itchiness and it’s loaded with anti-ageing goodies. Finally, it comes in a generous 150ml bottle! Very slightly tinted (though most of the tint disappears once it’s absorbed) it leaves your skin looking smoother and calmer. What’s not to love?
beauty Collective - four ways to slow down facial ageing

Four ways to slow down facial ageing

by Jo Boyden on May 23 2019
I know, there are probably more than a million ways to slow down facial ageing! But even after more than 20 years in the beauty industry and believing I’d heard it all before, it was these four things I learnt at the school of hard knocks. The first is one may have more impact than you realised…GLASSESYes you read right, my advice is to invest in great glasses—both sun and vision.Sunglasses — Look for those with more opaque lenses and both UVA and UVB protection. They’ll keep you from squinting, which will help you avoid wrinkles, but they will also protect the delicate skin around your eyes from sun-induced discoloration better known as Melasma or Hyper-Pigmentation. I discovered this when I treated myself to a big pair of Jackie O glasses. After four weeks my hyperpigmentation began to fade! Remember, the bigger the frame, the better. And when it comes to vision, it might interest you to know that as it deteriorates, other muscles in your eye area, particularly those beneath the crow’s feet, pitch in to help you focus which makes lines around the eyes a lot worse. I avoided upgrading my glasses for far too long (let’s face it, it’s a huge hassle) when I finally did, not only did the world become a lot clearer but the constant squinting and watery eyes that lead to deep lines and lots of headaches began to soften and disappear.TOO MUCH SUGAR AND NOT ENOUGH OMEGA 3Don’t just think about your waistline when you’re tempted by processed treats, think about your skin too.You know that refined carbohydrates and added sugars are at the top of every nutritionist's don’t-eat list, but dermatologists avoid them too. They lead to wrinkles through a process called glycation—eating refined carbs and sugars creates a quick spike in blood sugar, and when those sugar molecules link up with the collagen in your body (which normally gives skin its elasticity), it leads to stiffness in your skin.Eat more of these instead: Healthy fats like omega-3 fatty acids found in fish, and colourful fruits and vegetables. The fats can also help lower inflammation, which calms redness-inducing issues like acne and rosacea but also dramatically reduces your chances of inflamm-ageing. Not sure what Inflamm-ageing is? Read more hereUSE RETINOLIt really is a game changer and it is the one thing all dermatologists, plastic surgeons and cosmetic surgeons agree you should do to prevent premature skin ageing (other than wear sunscreen). The list of their anti-ageing benefits is huge but to name a few: Retinol increases collagen production, helps make your pores appear smaller and boosts cell turnover to even out discoloration and brighten your skin tone. As far as I know it’s the only ingredient that is such a great anti-ageing multi-tasker.Our favourites are the Medicalia Retinol and C Care Cream and Retinol Concentrate. This is a medical skin care line recommended by Doctors worldwide and head and shoulders above some of the low % cosmeceutical lines on the market.Just remember these important tips: Give it a chance, you won’t see the benefits in a week or even a month, it takes about 3 months to see the true benefits of retinol and when you do it will have been worth your persistence. If you have sensitive skin, wean yourself onto the products, start with a small amount every other night or even twice a week before building up to every night. Apply before bed; never in the morning. Retinol makes your skin more sensitive to sunlight and more likely to burn, yes always, and don’t listen to anyone who tells you otherwise. Less is more. You only need a pea-sized amount for your whole face. Keep them outside the bony ring around your eyes. The skin inside is delicate and if the retinol irritates your eyes you’ll rub them and that can lead to under-eye bags. Take my word for it! SUNSCREEN BLIND SPOTSThere are two overlooked places that often miss the sunscreen and that is the décolletage and hands. The two places that are first to show signs of ageing. Hands can develop sunspots and wrinkles and they are so hard to treat once established. It is particularly important to apply sunscreen to the backs of your hands while you’re driving, because car windshields and mirrors don’t block UVA rays. For your chest, sunscreen should extend all the way down to your bra line and don’t forget the sides of the neck. Our “go to” sunscreen is the Medicalia - Sunscreen SPF 30. It’s both a physical and chemical block so the texture and feel is more like a gorgeous moisturiser, and the subtle tint makes your skin look airbrushed and even.Obviously a good diet and exercise, plenty of sleep and water will have the greatest impact on how you age, and of course genetics, but these are four easy fixes that make a huge impact so worth a share in my book!

INFLAMM-AGEING: the new buzz word in skin health and ageing

by Jo Boyden on Apr 16 2019
Have you heard of the term before? It’s as scary as it sounds! It relates to chronic, long-term, inflammation that negatively affects our body and has been linked to numerous diseases including diabetes, cardiovascular disease, macular (vision) degeneration and now, skin ageing! As if we don’t have enough to worry about! How does it affect the skin? There are two types of skin ageing, internal and external. Internal ageing affects the density of the skin, thinning it as we age and results in lines and wrinkles.External factors such as UV exposure, poor lifestyle, or injury, cause inflammatory reactions in the skin, as well as oxidative damage. This oxidative stress injures cell membrane proteins and fats, and the genetic blueprint of the cell (DNA), which cause premature ageing and can even increase skin cancer risk. And what about age spots? These result from oxidative stress (free radicals) on the pigment-forming cells within the skin, leading to many inflammatory and immune reactions in the cell, which eventually causes tissue damage. A solution: ESSENTIAL FATTY ACIDS (EFAs)These are fats that our bodies can’t create for themselves so we need to acquire them through diet. They include omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids. EFAs are important for the cell membrane’s structure and function and can cause positive changes both outside and inside the cell. They also play a very important role in your body’s natural inflammatory response. However, not all omegas are equal! For example, too much of the omega-6 called arachidonic acid that you’d find in grain-fed beef, chicken, eggs, and pork, can lead to a higher chance of developing inflammation than a diet that contains equal amounts of omega-3 fatty acids. When we achieve this ratio, our bodies are better able to reduce inflammation and oxidative stress.EFAs also very important when it comes to how our bodies control inflammation. So when you have an adequate intake of omega-3 fatty acids, it can help to reduce the production of substances that are known to promote inflammation. From a skincare perspective, when our skin becomes irritated, this triggers the release of chemicals that can cause inflammatory damage and destruction of the skin’s support proteins including collagen and elastin, which leads to wrinkles. EFAs reduce this inflammation. They also help maintain your skin’s barrier function to prevent water loss and protect your body from microorganisms that can cause infection and disease, control the growth of collagen and elastin, increase the skin’s resistance to sunburn, and promote tissue repair. All this leads not only to enhanced skin function but also to healthier appearance!Unfortunately, a typical western diet is lower in fish and other foods rich in omega-3’s, so it increases the risk of various inflamm-ageing related conditions. While making the proper dietary changes can be helpful in reducing inflamm-ageing, supplementing with a fish oil containing 1000-2000mg of combined EPA and DHA can really help.So eating a healthy diet and supplementing with a fish oil supplement can definitely reduce the risk of inflamm-ageing, and add to this few simple preventative skin care ingredients such as anti-oxidants and sun protection and it can go a long way for the health of your skin!To help prevent inflamm-ageing we recommend incorporating Vitamin C into your skin regimen and using the best possible sun protection you can find. Our favourites; Vie Collection - Vita C Concentrated Solution and Phytomer - Sun Solution Sunscreen SPF 30 Face & Sensitive Areas.

Choose wisely Be diligent about the skincare you use. Opt for products specifically targeted to sensitive and rosacea prone skin and stick with them (changing up your products continually in the quest for the perfect product can aggravate your skin and mess with its natural pH balance too!)We also recommend using products formulated with pharmaceutical quality, pure ingredients farmed from the ocean and are in love with Phytomer’s Accept Desensitizing Mask. Be gentle with your skin When applying skin products, be gentle. Say no to exfoliators especially ones formulated with granules. This will make facial redness worse and make sure you use a gentle moisturiser every single day, morning and night! Moisturising helps to lock in water and prevents sensitive skin from drying out. Say no to hot water Avoid extreme temperatures! Especially when taking a bath or shower. Hot water will not only cause your skin to feel flushed (and potentially aggravated!) but will also strip your skin of its healthy oils and increase blood circulation (which can be the source of facial redness!) Instead wash your face with lukewarm water every time. Exercise can actually help decrease facial redness Sure sure I hear you say! But trust us. Whilst exercise might seem counter-intuitive if you are trying to combat facial redness, it is essential for stress (another key trigger) management and your well-being. Just alter your exercise regime. Try short blasts of high-intensity workouts and exercise in cool, air-conditioned environments while keeping hydrated. Don’t overexpose yourself to the sun This can damage your already sensitive skin by making it more prone to flare-ups. Also keep reactions at bay by opting for a fragrance-free, natural sunscreen. Best to wear a hat too! Red wine can be the enemy (eek) If you’re like me you’ll love a glass of wine in the evenings, but try to steer clear of red. Why red you say? Red wine promotes the opening of blood vessels in the skin and is a histamine releaser which causes redness and flushing, it also deprives the skin of vital vitamins. Hydration is key Drink plenty of water (we know Julian…!) But on a serious note water not only rehydrates you but also flushes away toxins and replenishes skin tissue. Drinking enough water can fight off skin conditions like psoriasis, eczema, rosacea and all common skin sensitivities. We are what we eat Steer clear of dairy products and spicy foods and ensure you eat lots of green leafy vegetables and foods rich in vitamins and essential fatty acids. Foods rich with Vitamin C and E are beneficial for the skin as they not only serve as excellent antioxidants they also promote a healthy immune system. Think broccoli, kale, spinach, avocados, fish, nuts, seeds, blueberries, strawberries…the list goes on. Always remove makeup before going to bed Sleeping with a face full of makeup can and will result in skin irritability and breakouts. Makeup not only traps dead skin cells it also blocks our pores and when pores are blocked the skin can’t breathe and therefore regenerate! Sleep more, stress less Of course, this is easier said than done! Especially if you have children, work long hours or generally have a lot going on in your life. But…if it’s possible to put your head down even half an hour earlier at night it’ll make all the difference and allow your skin to repair and regenerate and your brain to recharge!

Post Summer Skin Detox

by Jo Boyden on Mar 26 2019
Whether you are mourning the end of bright, balmy days or doing side-kicks now that cooler weather is on the way, we all need to give our skin love much-needed love after a season of summer indulgences. Think salty or chlorinated water, a little too much “Yes way, Rose” or even a beautiful bronze glow that’s starting to look more like a pigment patchwork quilt. Time for repair! So what are we dealing with now that autumn has arrived? More often than not, clogged pores, dehydration, hyper-pigmented patches, and of course chapped lips. Luckily, all it takes to reboot skin is a few tweaks to our current skincare routine.ExfoliateThose dry dead skin cells that sit on the surface of your skin are not only dulling it, they are blocking the hydrating ingredients from getting in. We shed approx. 30,000 skin cells a day naturally but this slows down dramatically with age. It can also slow down in summer as oil, sweat, and makeup join together and act like mortar for the skin cells, binding them tightly together and creating an impenetrable wall. There are so many ways to exfoliate but the gentlest method is with fruit acids and enzymes, instead of forcing the cells off and causing possible damage to the skin these ingredients gently loosen and digest cells to leave skin softer, smoother and more refined. Try Phytomer - Vegetal Exfoliant with Natural Enzymes.Deep Pore CleansingNo matter how well you cleansed your skin in the last couple of months, deep down, where none of us can see, makeup, impurities, old sweat, and toxins are having a party in your pores. The result? Skin texture that looks coarse and spongy and never feels clean. To help clean them out detox your skin with a clay-based mask, or several if you are not afraid to be a multi-masker! Our go-to for deep cleansing is Phytomer Oligopur Flawless Skin Mask with Kaolin Clay.RehydrateSeriously pack it on! Summer leaves your skin depleted of moisture and not only is this uncomfortable it’s also ageing. So up your moisturiser game by adding some concentrates beneath and get out the hydrating masks. Don’t forget your body too! After your shower, smother your damp skin from neck to toes with rich balms and body oils. Did you know the skin’s outer layer swells open when it’s damp allowing products to penetrate better? We love Phytomer - Hydra Original Thirst-Relief Melting Cream and Hydrasea Thirst-Relief Rehydrating Mask for the face and the heavenly texture and aroma of Phytomer - Trésor Des Mers Beautifying Oil for the body.Check the damage!Unfortunately, you can’t undo the damage that UV rays cause, which is why a Broad Spectrum sunscreen is your most important skin care product. And, it’s important to keep your eyes open for any changes to your skin. A visit to a dermatologist for a skin cancer check should be a priority for every Australian and while it may seem a nuisance could be lifesaving. You can however help minimize the visible appearance of sun damage on the skin’s surface with little effort. To help fade the look of dark spots and even skin tone, use a hyperpigmentation formula such as Vie Collection - Laser Light Concentrate.Keep up protectionEven though it’s not summer anymore it doesn’t mean you should stop using your SPF. Reach for it every day and ensure your skin care is always loading with anti-oxidants. The combination of both will decrease skin ageing by a whopping 90%. Our go-to is Vie Collection - Vita C Concentrated Solution. You can put a few drops in your regular moisturiser or apply it beneath for a brighter complexion. It also has the added benefit of fading hyperpigmentation and stopping ageing free radicals in their tracks.Eyes and LipsOur lips lack melanin so they are especially susceptible to sun damage and after several months of hot weather are also prone to deep dryness. Squinting, sweating and the sun can also cause damage to the fragile eye area. So give these areas some TLC. Reach for nourishing lip colour instead of drying mattes, apply SPF over your lips and at night offer some much needed repair. Phytomer - Youth Contour Reviving Wrinkle Correction Cream - Eye and Lip is our favourite because it is formulated to calm, soothe and replenish delicate skin.

5 Skin Care Myths Debunked

by Jo Boyden on Feb 26 2019
It’s so easy to feel overwhelmed in the constant changing world of skincare, with new ranges hitting the market every day, telling us what is good and not good for our skin.Skin science has moved in leaps and bounds as new delivery systems and ways to modify ingredients can make it seem more like a Star Wars battle than the exciting world it really is. It’s like most things; sometimes a lot of choice is just too much!So we are here to bust just a few of the common myths of this mystifying topic!MYTH #1 – TREAT YOUR SKIN ACCORDING TO SKIN TYPE For years we’ve been conditioned to believe that skin is oily, dry or combination and most of us have used skin care products accordingly. However, your skin type is just a grain of sand on a beach when it comes to getting the most out of your skin care. It’s very important to address the health of the skin and not just the external factors such as “not enough moisture”. Sure we can the moisture however it’s going to be a short-term fix if we are not addressing the cause; i.e. dehydration of the body and compromised skin function. Maintaining a good diet, getting plenty of sleep, staying hydrated and looking after your health is an obvious fix, and when it comes to skin care, look for products that stimulate the bodies own healing processes i.e. stimulate collagen formation, sedate oil glands, repair cell mitochondria etc. Ingredients such as AHA’s, Retinol, Anti-Oxidants, Hyaluronic and Sunscreens should be on the top of your list.We recommend: Vie Collection - Retinopur Wrinkles Imperfections Fluid, it stimulates collagen and elastin and helps rejuvenate skin cells.MYTH #2 – I’LL USE ANTI-AGEING SKIN CARE WHEN I’M OLDERUnfortunately there is no wonder ingredient that completely repairs the passage of time; prevention is No.1 when it comes to youthful skin.Every day we are exposed to factors that damage our skin and cause skin ageing; the sun’s rays, pollution, stress, unhealthy lifestyles all work together like a super-villain team and attack our skin at a deep and cellular level. It may not show immediately but it’s happening.Keeping the skin deeply hydrated is important in our early years and ingredients such as Hyaluronic help our fibroblast cells (the ones that make collagen and elastin) to work more effectively and more collagen and elastin means less wrinkles and sagging. Also make sunscreen application part of your daily routine, everyday! Not only to reduce your chances of skin cancer but to reduce about 90% of visible skin ageing. We recommend: ELES - Luminous Defence Brightening Day Protection 50, its super light and gives the skin a lovely pearlescent glow!MYTH #3 – THE ONLY WAY TO LOOK YOUTHFUL IS WITH BOTOX Not true! There are so many effective products and treatments that will help to plump and firm the skin without a needle. As we age the lower layers of our skin lose volume. By reducing cell build-up on the outer skin (this acts like a wall to great ingredients getting in where they are needed) and increasing the volume of the deeper layers of the skin on a daily basis with ingredients such as retinol, peptides and essential fatty acids you can enjoy bouncy, firm and radiant skin. You’ll also find many skin care products contain neuropeptides (Botox substitutes) that do a wonderful job relaxing and softening wrinkles. We recommend: Phytomer - Pionniere XMF Perfection Youth Cream, a firm favourite this exceptional cream adds density to the skin giving it volume and bounce.MYTH #4 – WE ALL NEED TO PEEL AND EXFOLIATE DAILYThis will look amazing for the first week or even month, however you’ll soon discover the damaging effects of over-exfoliating as you remove your protective acid mantle. This barrier protects the skin from moisture loss, from bacterial invasion and when it’s gone you’ll be left with dry, sensitive skin with breakouts.Exfoliation is an important part of any good skin care routine, however moderation and gentle when it comes to peels and scrubs is always best.We recommend: Phytomer - Vegetal Exfoliant with Natural Enzymes a gentle but effective exfoliant that leaves skin fresh and refined.MYTH #5 – DRY SKIN NEEDS RICHER MOISTURISERSQuite often a super-rich moisturiser can exacerbate the problem. The oils in rich creams can act like a glue to dead skin cells that prevent hydrating ingredients from penetrating the skin, so while it might feel soft and supple on the surface, deep down it’s drying out!Layering is your best defence against dry skin. Apply a hydrating serum that will sink into the lower layers and then seal it with a protective cream, something that contains shea butter or light oils is ideal. We recommend: Phytomer - Hydrasea Ultra-Moisturizing Polarized Water Serum, it drenches the skin with pure moisture leaving it dewy and supple.

Your skin through the ages: Understanding your skin and choosing the right products to prevent premature ageing

by Jo Boyden on Aug 28 2018
When it comes to ageing, nothing reflects it more than our skin. From the silky smoothness of a baby’s complexion to the lines and wrinkles of mature lady, here’s what to expect through the decades, and what you can do to help prolong your youth and prevent premature ageing!20’sOnce you reach your twenties it’s easy to fall under the false pretence that since your teens are behind you, so are those pesky pimples! Wrong! While your skin may have settled (as have those hormones) it’s still producing oil. Also news flash! Your body actually stops producing collagen once you hit 25! You know collagen, the protein which provides elasticity to the skin helping it to appear youthful, glowing and vibrant! So it’s important to exfoliate daily to continue daily collagen renewal. What you may need: Opt for natural extracts in light-textured, non-greasy formulations in order to keep pores clean and clear. Also, use a broad spectrum UVA & UVB daily sunscreen – just remember you're never too young to start wearing sunscreen!Try; Organic Essentials Line; Gentle Exfoliating Cleanser, Hydrating Sunscreen SPF 3030’sAgeing really begins at 30. Fine lines develop as collagen and elastin start to break down, and our delicate skin under the eyes begins to thin. Skin generally becomes drier, quicker. Broken veins may start to show up as tiny red dots, and towards the end of this decade, age spots and brown pigmentation marks, or 'sun spots', may appear. Under-eye puffiness may become a problem, taking longer to subside after you wake. What you may need: Effective youth-prolonging skincare to strengthen, smooth and rejuvenate. Hydrating Moisturisers formulated with marine collagen, Eye Creams & Gels.Try; Age Correction Marine Collagen Cream & Intensifier, Age Correction Eye Contour, “C” Evolutive Eye Gel. 40’sDeeper lines begin to etch around the mouth and eyes, furrows appear on the forehead and circles under the eyes may grow into pouches. Most women's skin becomes noticeably drier. In the run-up to the menopause, and during this phase, skin may also become more sensitive. What's more, skin loses its resilience due to a breakdown of elastin and collagen. What you may need: Your daily regime should embrace products that offer specific benefits to counteract skin problems such as: anti-aging, sensitivity, hyper-pigmentation, Eg. Soothing serums to protect capillaries, lip and eye care, deeply repairing and resurfacing products.Try; Micro-Retinol Line; Eye Renew Conceal & De-Age Treatment, Lip Renew Plump & De-Age Treatment, Propolis Concentrate 50’sBy now, skin starts to acquire true 'character' in the form of fine wrinkles, and the lines you develop in your 50’s and 60’s may deepen into folds. This is because, post-menopausal, there's much less oestrogen being produced and without oestrogen, skin becomes thinner and more fragile. It is also less able to retain moisture and the production of collagen and elastin slows down significantly. In your 50’s skin tone is also likely to become more uneven, with an increasing number of 'sun spots'.What you may need: Products that minimize the appearance of lines, contain phyto-estrogens and protect the skin from the sun or even fade sunspots.Try; Stem Cells Phyto-Elite Line, RS2 Line, Lip Renew Plump & De-Age Treatment, Lumafirm Eye Contour Lift & Glow, Renewing Glycocides Cream 60’sYour skin has a hard time retaining moisture and natural oil production slows down so skin is very dry. Cell turnover continues to slow - a process that started in your forties so skin is generally duller than before. Between the lack of oil, the loss of collagen and elastin, and the dryness, dark spots can really start to stand out. Areas of scaly roughness often seen on fair-skinned women that can be a precursor to skin cancer. What you may need: De-ageing products with wrinkle relaxers such as vegetal botox, exfoliating products with aha’s, products rich in collagen and elastin, sun protection and pigment fading productsTry; Myoxy-Caviar Timeless Repair Line, Renewing Glycocides Cream, Lumablanc Cream

Say no to hot water Try not to wash your face with hot water. This will not only cause your skin to feel flushed and in turn aggravated. The hot water also strips your skin of the healthy oils which we desperately need.Luke warm water will be your friend. Get your sensitive skin care routine down pat I know you’re on the search for that perfect product, the one that is right for your sensitive skin but don’t continually trial product after product back to back. 8 beauty tips to banish rosacea

by Jo Boyden on Apr 01 2017
Rosacea. I’m sure you’ve heard the name but I bet you didn’t know that it’s so common (think 45 million people) that the month of April has been designated GLOBALLY as Rosacea Awareness Month! What exactly is rosacea though I hear you asking… In layman’s terms rosacea is an inflammatory skin condition which often presents with facial redness. However many tend to mistake the redness (or bumps that can come with it), for acne. Other tell-tale signs include; dilated capillaries, congestion and pustules.  Although there’s no cure for rosacea, the great news is by following these essential tips you could avoid flair ups have your skin red-free in next to no time!  Try to avoid alcohol Think beauty products containing alcohol as well as alcoholic drinks we are all a little partial too from time to time! Sadly a glass of wine for instance can worsen the redness caused by rosacea. Noooo! Watch what you eat Certain foods can cause your skin to flush (or otherwise heat up!) try to avoid or at least reduce eating foods including; oranges, strawberries, peanuts, cashews and caffeine. Hot and spicy curries are also a no no! Eat a diet rich in multi vitamins and essential fatty Acids Vitamin A & C foods such as broccoli, sweet potato, carrots and leafy greens help strengthen the skin while foods such as salmon, almonds and eggs rich in fatty acids help produce the skin's natural oil barrier, critical in keeping skin hydrated, plumper, and younger looking while protecting it from environmental irritants. Avoid strenuous exercise. Oh ok then you’ve twisted by arm! Always use sun protection. The sun unfortunately is a trigger for rosacea. Avoid extreme temperatures. So no soaking in a HOT bath (ahhhh), relaxing in a sauna or slaving over a very hot stove! Do not slather on your makeup. Yes we all want to conceal our blemishes but layering makeup may only inflame your symptoms more! You want to select multi-tasking products, colour correctors and breathable foundations and powders so skin if covered but calm without being clogged! Give mineral makeup a go. You won’t regret it. The right skincare will be your best friend. With the constant use of effective skincare rosacea can be reduced and in some cases totally controlled! Pevonia's RS2 range, created by world renowned dermatologist, biochemist and a pioneer in advanced organic skincare, Dr. Sylvie Hennessy, was designed to specifically treat rosacea. Formulated with the most purest, natural, nurturing ingredients including Green Tea, Chamomile, Liquorice, Allantoin, Vitamin E and Rose Essential Oil the range strengthens capillaries, desensitizes, decongests, soothes, and hydrates while rendering skin evenly toned and visibly calmed. But don’t let us tell you how amazing this range is! Here is what some of our customers have had to say; “My rosacea has been in remission ever since I started using the RS2 range. I wouldn't use anything else on my face!” R. Morgan "I’ve finally found a range that is good for my very sensitive, rosacea skin. After using it regularly I also noticed that it improved the texture of my skin.” Rebecca B “I can honestly say that the RS2 Care Cream is the only rosacea product I love and trust. It comforts and soothes my skin, reducing redness.” Michelle W “After spending a lot of money on different products which didn't work, I found the RS2 Care Cream to be the best that I have tried for my sensitive, rosacea skin. It's gentle, and soothing while still moisturising my mature skin.” Johanna R Say goodbye to rosacea today!

Ask a Dermatologist - What is Rosacea?

by Jo Boyden on Apr 18 2016
Red in the face lately? If it’s more than just a rosy complexion or a slight flush, you might have rosacea, a chronic skin disorder resulting in distinct and constant redness. Since rosacea has no known cure, we wanted to find the best way to prevent flare-ups and treat the symptoms.Dr. Christian Jurist, a certified dermatologist and medical director of global education for Pevonia, recently took time to answer all of our most pressing rosacea questions so you can calm to redness. What is rosacea?Rosacea is a chronic and progressive, micro-circulation disorder visibly resulting in persistent redness, dilated capillaries, congestion, and last but not least, papules and pustules (breakouts!).How do I know if I have rosacea?Affected individuals will usually suffer from spells of flushing and blushing presenting skin redness and sometimes a burning sensation. Dilated capillaries under the skin are common as well. What triggers rosacea?Usually rosacea is triggered by extreme temperature changes, sun exposure, emotions and stress, hormonal changes, certain cosmetic products, spicy foods, ingestion of alcoholic beverages like wine, and also hot beverages such as coffee. What should I avoid if you have rosacea?Primarily, the triggers mentioned above should be avoided. Then, a proper, gentle and dedicated skin care regimen to control and treat the sensitivity of rosacea skin should be followed. It is recommended to visit a dermatologist as well for a professional point of view. What treatments can be used for rosacea?Gentle products intended to soothe, cool and calm sensitized skin are the main focus. Doctors mostly rely on antibiotics to control a certain population of micro-organisms that can worsen the condition. In addition, doctors will recommend sunscreen to reduce skin damage. Last but not least, concealing mineral makeup is recommended to cover and/or cancel out redness. Pevonia® offers the RS2 Rosacea range for home use and a Professional Treatment Mask administered at a qualified salon or spa.Do treatments differ between mild and severe rosacea? As Rosacea advances, the treatment must be adapted to address the current condition of the skin and affected areas. If Rosacea is not managed properly and is not under control or worsens, targeted medical treatment is required to control further damage beyond the skin. Rosacea products for home use can be used at any stages, but it is recommended to have periodic examination by a skin professional to learn if a modification of the recommended routine is necessary. What ingredients should I look for in products to help remedy rosacea?Green tea, licorice extract, chamomile extract, and French rose extract are very effective ingredients to control rosacea symptoms when used on a regular basis. In general, any ingredients that can reduce skin irritation and calm the skin are ideal. For further information on Pevonia and to find your closest salon or spa visit www.pevonia.com.au
