24 beauty habits that are ageing you

24 beauty habits that are ageing you

by Jo Boyden on Sep 27 2024
Let's face it, we are all on the quest for radiant, youthful skin with many of us investing both our hard-earned money and time into perfecting our daily beauty routine as a result, but I’m here to tell you, that despite our best efforts the majority of us will still be making daily beauty mistakes, or following bad habits should I say, that actually add years to our face by making us look older than we actually are! Eek. From over-exfoliating to skipping sunscreen, keep reading as we count down 24 common beauty habits that could be ageing you! Remember it’s not too late to remedy this once you know the ones you are guilty of!   Wearing SPF only during the summer Let’s start with the most important habit of all, sunscreen. Not wearing SPF daily all year round is one of the biggest mistakes you can make for your skin. The suns harmful UV rays is hands down the no. 1 contributor to skin ageing so skipping your SPF is a no no. Yes, it's easy to remember to apply it when you're headed to the beach, or out and about on holiday, but so many of us skip this vital step in our everyday lives and not because we are necessarily lazy but because we don't understand the long term affect not wearing it will have on our skin! Even on cloudy days or when you’re indoors, UV rays can cause premature ageing, leading to wrinkles, dark spots, and sagging. Sun damage is cumulative, so every time you skip sunscreen, you’re speeding up the ageing process. How to fix it: Make SPF 30 or higher your daily must-have. Apply it generously every morning, and don’t forget to reapply throughout the day—especially if you’re spending time outdoors. And we understand that many sunscreens can feel oily on your skin or leave an unruly white residue that’s why we highly recommend Medicalia’s Sunscreen SPF 40 with Blue Light Shield. Thinking that the SPF in your makeup is enough to protect your skin Unless your makeup has an SPF factor of 30 or above it's unlikely to ward off premature ageing if worn alone. This is because the majority of makeup will protect against UVB rays but won't block UVA rays which is what causes skin damage. How to fix it: Layering your skin with a high factor SPF moisturiser and then foundation will give you the best chance of maintaining skin's youthful appearance, but if you are in love with your daily moisturiser which doesn't contain sun protection, use a foundation or BB Cream with a high enough SPF. We highly recommend ELES Blue Light Radiant BB Cream SPF 30. Formulated with potent ingredients including peptides, beta-carotene, amino acids, vitamin c, niacinamide, hyaluronic acid, vitamin e and vitamin c, it nourishes, brightens and protects skin against UVA and UVB, as well as blue light and free radical damage! Genius. Not updating your skincare as your skin changes You might have been loyal to the same moisturiser for many years but sadly the skincare you've used in your 20's really won't cut it in your 30's, 40's and beyond. This is because as we age our skin's needs dramatically change. Skin becomes thinner, drier, more sensitive, and loses elasticity as collagen and elastin start to deplete, while fine lines and wrinkles start to form. How to fix it: Understand your skin type and needs and choose products accordingly. Anti-ageing skincare rich in ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, collagen, and vitamin C become essential as we get older. For more info on this read about the 7 super ingredients in your skincare that are all the rage and adjust your products accordingly.   Skipping on your moisturiser It's that time of the month and a few pesky pimples have reared their ugly head, or perhaps you are often prone to adult acne or simply suffer from oily skin, so suddenly you think it best to lay off the moisturiser which must be exacerbating the issue right? Wrong. While you are likely not alone in thinking lathering up on moisturiser seems counterintuitive, everyone, no matter what your skin type or concern, needs to apply a moisturiser daily! This is because moisturiser maintains skin hydration throughout the day and therefore assists in fighting premature fine lines and wrinkles too. In fact, applying moisturiser will greatly reduce your chance of developing extreme dryness, skin sensitivity, or oiliness! Why? Dehydrated skin can lead to issues like inflammation, premature skin ageing, and even breakouts. When your skin becomes dry, your body responds by making more oil! And we all know excess oil can clog pores leading to more of those darn pesky pimples. How to fix it: Don’t skip moisturiser ever. Simply find the one that will be best for your skin type. Search BC by your skin concern and then look for the moisturiser that will be right for you. Just be sure to opt for lighter moisturisers by day, especially in the warmer months, and richer creams at night.   Focusing only on Wrinkles While we are all concerned about fine lines and wrinkles as we age, dark spots and pigmentation can actually give our complexion a dull, devitalised and in turn much older appearance too! In fact, dark spots and uneven skin tone can make us look 10 years older! How to fix it: If you suffer from hyperpigmentation ensure you introduce products specifically to help with this skin concern. We promise it'll positively impact your complexion and protect your skin too. Try Vie Collection's Mela White Radiance Brightening Essense, a triple-action daily cream that effectively acts against dark spots, free radicals, and UV. The results will speak for themselves. Ignoring eye care Unfortunately our eyes are the first area of our face to show ageing, so you need to show it love just as you would the rest of your face! Like a moisturiser, an eye cream’s main objective is to deliver brightening and anti-ageing ingredients, however in a milder, gentler, safer dose. Moisturisers tend to have a much richer consistency in comparison to their counterpart which if applied under the eyes can prove too much, resulting in irritation, allergic reactions and milia. How to fix it: Applying a good eye cream daily is essential in keeping fine, lines and wrinkles at yay! You can also buy eye creams targeted to specific eye concerns such as crow’s feet, under eye bags and dark circles. We highly recommend Vie Collection's Chrono Eyes Puffiness-Dark Circles Wrinkle Cream. A mouthful to say I know, but a product that does exactly what it says. It’s a beautifully fine cream enriched with moisturising ingredients to nourish the eye area while reversing puffiness, dark circles, and wrinkles! Seriously! Want younger looking eyes? Start wearing eye cream or eye gel today!   Rubbing Your Eyes The area around our eyes is the most delicate on our face, fact. When we are tired it's easy to fall into the trap of rubbing our eyes, but rubbing, tugging, or pulling at your eye area can cause tiny blood vessles to break resulting in dark circles that make you look tired All. Of. The. Time. How to fix it: Be mindful of your eyes. When youre tired try to leave them alone! And if you haven’t already get a good anti-ageing eye gel and eye cream for morning and night and start applying then stat!   8. Ignoring Your neck and decolletage Oh, the forgotten area! And the area of your skin which can actually age you the most! Exposed to sunlight just as much as your face, if your neck and decolletage aren't cared for daily or protected with SPF, they can end up crepey and wrinkly so much earlier than they should! Whatever you do for your face you should do for your neck and decolletage too. How to fix it: There are neck and chest specific products you can use, I personally use Phytomer's Decollete Parfait Neck and Decollete Renewing Care, it hydrates, nourishes refines and brightens skin for a more youthful appearance while smoothing wrinkles too! But there is also nothing wrong with using your daily moisturiser or a hydrating body cream instead! Just start doing it now! Forgetting your hands! We often focus all our anti-aging efforts on our face, but areas like hands can give away your age just as quickly. And I can bet your bottom dollar that many of us are not looking after this delicate area! The back of your hands have thinner skin and are often exposed to the sun and environmental damage, yet they’re frequently overlooked in our skincare routines. How to fix it: Whatever you do for your face, do for your hands! Its simple! Apply sunscreen, moisturiser, and anti-ageing products daily. We highly recommend Pevonia’s Collagen Hand Cream, its divinely nourishing and gives hands an instant lift in appearance and texture. Avoiding exfoliators It's not just fine lines and wrinkles that make you look older, having a dull uneven skin tone can easily add years to your face as well! As we age our skin's natural ability to shed dead cells declines, so without weekly exfoliation skin can become uneven, dull and lacklustre. This is why exfoliation is so imperative, and not a step that should be ignored. How to fix it: Many people are scared of exfoliation because they think their skin is too sensitive, and it will just aggravate an existing issue, but that's where natural enzyme exfoliators can be the answer. Hubislab's Pure Balance Papaya Enzyme Peeling Wash, Phytomer's Vegetal Exfoliant with Natural Enzymes and Pevonia's Enzymo Spherides Peeling Cream are formulated with natural enzymes which basically melt away dead cells so no scrubbing is needed. Just remember removing dead skin cells helps your skin properly absorb moisturiser which in turn keeps fine lines and dehydration at bay, as well as brightening skins radiance. Now, who wouldn't want that!! Or simply going overboard with exfoliating If you tend to sway the other way and love to exfoliate your skin a little too much i'm here to tell you stop it now! Over exfoliating can actually slow cell turnover and lead to irritation and inflammation. Over time, this can weaken your skin’s barrier, causing fine lines and wrinkles to appear more quickly. Your skin needs time to regenerate, and over-exfoliating can strip away essential oils and moisture, making you look older. How to fix it: Stick to exfoliation once, maybe twice a week for the best results. If you like to use an exfoliator with grains or microbeads but skin tends to be a little on the sensitive side give Pevonia's Gentle Exfoliating Cleanser a go. it’s great for those who love physical exfoliators with granules but want to steer clear of facial scrubs which could be a little harsh on the skin. It gently polishes your complexion with its unique creamy yet granular texture, formulated with jojoba beads, saponaria and chamomile, revealing a softer, smoother and brighter complexion every time! Not drinking enough water As I'm sitting here writing this, I can hold my hands up and say today so far I've only drunk 2 glasses of water when I should have in fact consumed at least a litre by now! Yes, it's fact, water, or lack of should I say is a real skin ager!! And I know I must practice what a preach! The thing is I do, but some days I will admit it's easy to forget! And when I do, I get cross with myself as I can see it in my skin! It's drier, duller and devitalised. This is because drinking 'enough' water helps the body to flush out toxins while increasing blood flow to the skin which gives it an even tone and dewy appearance! And dewy skin equals youthful skin after all! How to fix it: Aim to drink at least 8 glasses of water a day to keep your skin hydrated from the inside out. Adding water-rich foods like cucumbers and watermelon to your diet can also give your skin an extra hydration boost. Not a huge fan of water? Try a good herbal tea instead.   Yo-Yo Dieting Constantly fluctuating between losing and gaining weight can wreak havoc on your skin. Yo-yo dieting can cause your skin to stretch and lose elasticity, making it more prone to sagging and wrinkles. The loss of essential nutrients during restrictive diets can also lead to dull, unhealthy-looking skin. How to fix it: Focus on a balanced, nutrient-rich diet that supports overall health, including your skin. Healthy fats, antioxidants, and vitamins will keep your skin nourished and resilient.   Ignoring Stress Stress doesn’t just affect your mood—it can take a toll on your skin too. Stress increases cortisol, which breaks down collagen and leads to wrinkles. How to fix it: Make stress management a priority with mindfulness practices, regular exercise, and relaxation techniques. Indulging in hot showers and baths How many of us are guilty of indulging in a hot shower or simply washing our faces with water set to a high temp. Unfortunately extreme water temperatures will strip healthy natural oils from your skin quickly, making it dry and therefore age much faster. Water that's too hot can also dilate your capillaries leading to spider veins. How to fix it: For best and healthy results you should be washing with lukewarm water! Easier to achieve in the warmer months!   Not getting enough sleep....when you could get more If I had a dollar for every time I said to my husband I must get to bed early tonight because I need more sleep and am fed up of looking old and tired, I'd be a rich woman. While they say practice what you preach, I am a testament that not getting enough sleep (when I could indeed fit in another 1-2 hours a night (darn netflix!) literally does age you. Poor sleep is quite literally to blame for premature ageing, dermatitis, eczema, acne, loss of collagen and more! Scary right? So let's make a pact and try for that 8 hours + we really do need nightly. Now be sure to follow our advice to be sure you slow down the signs of ageing naturally! How to fix it: Aim for 7-9 hours of quality sleep each night to give your skin the time it needs to recover and rejuvenate.   Over doing your brows Yes, we need brows to look youthful, after all they frame the eyes and lift the face. Many of us tweezed our brows to thin lines in the 80’s only to find they never grew back so what to many of us do! Fill out our brows, but often with harsh, red toned pencils which im afraid can make us look hard and older! How to fix it: The goal is to create natural looking thicker brows like the ones we used to have. Opt for taupe colour brow products instead of warm browns, these will frame your eyes beautifully without taking over your face. Apply the brow product in soft stokes to create the illusion of natural hair. Be sure not to overfill the front part of your brow though! This area should have soft hair that graduates into more density. We recommend using the ELES Precision Brow Pencil. The soft, fine pencil allows you to perfectly line and fill your brows and the formula lasts for us to 10 hours! It’s amazing. Using the wrong tone of foundation Many foundations and BB Creams come in both warm and cool tones but remember for many of us cool tones can exacerbate signs of age! This is because they often have blue, pink, or ashy undertones, which can accentuate fine lines, wrinkles, and uneven skin texture. As skin ages, it tends to lose its natural warmth and radiance, so using a foundation with cool tones can make the complexion appear dull, flat, or even greyish too! Which in turn can also highlight dark circles or any sallowness in the skin. How to fix it: Opt for warmer tones that help counteract complexion pinkness that comes with thinning of the skin and exposure of fine capillaries. Warmer tones also conceal shadows better which means you need less concealer. We recommend using ELES Blue Light Radiant BB Cream 30, it’s packed with nature’s anti-ageing actives and leaves the skin glowing.   19. Overloading on foundation powder Face powder, when used correctly and frugally can be a fantastic makeup staple (I have been I’m in love with the ELES Mineral Powder Foundation for years!) however, no matter your skin type, too much face powder can actually age you! That’s right, it can highlight fine lines and wrinkles instead of helping to conceal them! How to fix it: Im not saying you have to totally forgo your trusty powder foundation compact, but it’s best to use powder sparingly – on your t-zone, or for quick touch-up’s, Or better still make sure you opt for a lightweight powder!   Using the wrong concealer or concealer shade As we mature and our face loses its youthful “plumpness”, shadow start to really appear under our eyes, around the nose, and at the corners of our mouth. It’s tempting to reach for a heavy duty, ultra-light shade concealer to hide these dark areas. The problem is that they just make the dark shadows look grey as opposed to concealing them! How to fix it: Opt instead for peachy toned, lightweight concealers that won’t cake on the skin and counteract the blue in the shadows. We recommend ELES Dual Action Concealer, it acts like 8 hours of sleep in a tube! We love it! Applying eye makeup that makes the eyes droop Who doesn’t love makeup! After all it can boost our confidence, enhance our natural beauty and help soften the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles! But sadly certain eye makeup techniques and products can make our eyes appear droopy as well as emphasize ageing signs as we get older! Thick, dark eyeliner, especially on the lower lash line, can make eyes look smaller and more tired. It can also draw attention to sagging skin around our delicate peepers. Then there is our eyeshadow! Eyeshadow enhances eye shape, adds depth and dimension making eyes appear more vibrant but shimmer and frosty shades while fun can settle into fine lines and wrinkles, exacerbating them and making our eyelids look more creased or droopy. How to fix it: To counteract this, opt for lighter, more neutral shades on the lids, keep eyeliner lighter, thin and lifted, and focus on lifting the upper lash line to create a more youthful, wide-eyed appearance. For your eyeliner we recommend ELES Superwear Gel Eyeliner, its soft and easy to blend out and once set won’t transfer to the lids. If you have hooded or droopy eyes here are some top tips to improve them naturally. Continuing to use that cold frosted lipstick we love As we age, similar to our skin, our lips start to lose volume and in turn fine lines start to form! Unfortunately that frosted lip colour that we once loved (and looked good) no longer does! This is because frosted lip colours enhance these lines making your lips age you even more! How to fix it: It’s time to change up your lipstick! Instead of that frosted favourite, opt for a cream or satin lipstick that will make your lips look fuller and smoother. Many of these contain moisturising molecules that plump the lips and keep them hydrated longer.   Going to bed with makeup on Well here's one you've heard many a time before! Right? From a few too many wines to being just plain old exhausted, sometimes it hard to peel yourself off your bed to go and remove your makeup but remove your makeup you must! Cleansing your face especially at night to remove not only your makeup but any remnants of the days sweat, dirt and grime is imperative for healthy skin. Not removing your makeup means your skin is unable to regenerate effectively while you sleep, pores clog, blemishes form and fatigue (ageing!) signs start to appear. Makeup can also trap dirt and pollution, which leads to oxidative stress—damaging your skin and breaking down collagen, the protein that keeps your skin firm and smooth. How to fix it: No matter how tired you are, make cleansing a non-negotiable part of your nighttime routine. Use a gentle cleanser or micellar water to remove makeup and grime, giving your skin a chance to breathe and repair while you sleep. For a fantastic makeup remover which effectively melts away makeup and grime with minimum effort try Phytomer's Doux Contour Eye and Lip Waterproof Makeup Remover. Combining the effectiveness of an oil (a trio of oils in fact) and the gentleness of a lotion, this ultra-hydrating makeup remover, eradicates even the most stubborn of lips and eye makeup fast! To read more about sleeping in makeup and what it really does to our skin click here. 24. Sleeping on your stomach or side This one might surprise you, but the way you sleep can actually affect your skin. If you regularly sleep on your stomach or side, your face gets squished against the pillow, which can lead to wrinkles over time. These “sleep lines” tend to form around the eyes, cheeks, and forehead, making you look older. Just great I hear you say! How to fix it: Try sleeping on your back to reduce pressure on your face. Investing in a silk or satin pillowcase can also help, as it causes less friction on your skin than cotton.
How to reduce under eye wrinkles: 9 proven tips

How to reduce under eye wrinkles: 9 proven tips

by Jo Boyden on Sep 20 2024
If you’re in your 40s like me, it’s likely you’ve started to notice fine lines and wrinkles showing up under your eyes! Unfortunately the delicate skin around our precious peepers is one of the first areas to show signs of ageing, and whether it's from constant late nights, sun exposure, or simply because of your age, those wrinkles can make you look and feel older than you actually are. But all is not lost! I’m here to tell you there are ways to visibly reduce them and restore a more youthful, refreshed look! Keep reading as we count down 9 proven tips and products to help smooth out your under-eye area and keep those obvious wrinkles at bay.   Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate! The skin under your eyes needs constant moisture to stay plump and healthy. Dry skin shows wrinkles more prominently, so it’s essential to hydrate both inside and out. Drink plenty of water throughout the day (think 8 glasses and more if you can!) and use an eye eye or serum in the morning specifically formulated for hydration. Look for ingredients like hyaluronic acid, glycerin, and peptides to lock in moisture and plump up the skin.   Sun protection is a Must By now we should all know that UV rays are one of the leading causes of premature ageing, including under-eye wrinkles!! Daily use of a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher will protect your skin and eyes from harmful sun damage.   Invest in a gemstone roller A gemstone roller will not only help reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles around the eyes, but when used correctly, it can dramatically reduce puffiness by moving excess fluid around your eyes towards your lymph nodes where it filters out the toxins too. Cool right? To find out more about the facial rollers and how to use them click here.   Invest in an anti-ageing eye cream specifically formulated to target under eye wrinkles At night make sure you apply a really nourishing anti-ageing eye cream. Look for ingredients such as vitamin C, retinol, collagen, hyaluronic acid, and peptides, which will help promote collagen production helping to reduce wrinkles but it will help brighten the under-eye area too! We love Vie Collection Chrono Eyes Puffiness – Dark Circles Wrinkle Cream. This outstanding eye cream draws its inspiration from the eye rejuvenating hyaluronic acid injections carried out in aesthetic doctors practices! It’s suitable for everyone, even those with super sensitive eyes and it does exactly what the bottle says! It attacks puffiness, dark circles and wrinkles with a powerful burst of encapsulated high molecular weight hyaluronic acid, injectables-like peptide, fatty acids, vitamin c and niacinamide for exceptional results.   Be armed with a good concealer Completely eradicating under eye wrinkles is next to impossible but it is possible to make your reduced wrinkles look non-existent by arming yourself with a really good concealer specifically for the delicate eye area. Simply dot the concealer using your pinky finger (the warmth of your fingers will help the concealer to melt into your skin creating a smooth, natural application). My go-to concealer is the ELES Dual Action Concealer. Its an anti-ageing wonder rich in Vitamins E & C, caffeine, collagen, hyaluronic acid and Tetrapeptide 5 which works to depuff, smooth, brighten and conceal the eyes, neutralizing dark circles and hiding fine lines. Its moisturising formula also provides continuous hydration as well as a natural longwearing finish meaning it lasts for hours without seeping into fine lines and wrinkles! Bonus!   Adjust your diet Make sure you eat foods rich in vitamin E which can help to fight enzymes that break down skin elasticity. Vitamin E also fights free radicals which causes wrinkles and ageing. It also helps to remove blemishes and dark circles too! Foods like almond, peanuts, sunflower seeds, spinach, and broccoli are good!   Don’t over expose your eyes to sun! Sunscreen isn’t the only way to protect your peepers from the sun! To prevent wrinkles from forming prematurely around the eyes, don’t forget to wear sunglasses, this will prevent squinting. Oh and opt for a protective hat too!   Get your beauty sleep! One of the most common contributors to undereye wrinkles is lack of sleep! Eek, so you need to ensure you are getting enough beauty sleep every night, we are talking 7-9 hours minimum! Lack of sleep affects your skin's hydration, collagen levels, and blood circulation. When you don’t get enough shut eye your skin becomes dehydrated, making fine lines and wrinkles more visible. Lack of sleep also increases cortisol, the stress hormone, which breaks down collagen—the protein responsible for keeping skin firm and smooth. And finally poor sleep reduces blood flow, causing the under-eye area to appear dull and tired, while fluid retention leads to puffiness and sagging, further exaggerating wrinkles!! Yet another reason why quality sleep is so essential!   Upgrade your pillow case If you are one for sleeping with your face in the pillow, you might want to consider switching up your cotton pillowcase to a silk or satin alternative instead. Silk has natural moisturising properties to retain moisture around the eyes. The dense weave of the silky-smooth fibres also keep moisture close to your skin, this extra moisture can help to reduce dark circles, fine lines and wrinkles. Just remember, Rome wasn’t built in day, and your under-eye skin won’t transform overnight either sadly (if only!) Be patient and be religious with these steps and you’ll be waking up to smoother, brighter and younger looking eyes soon!
9 signs of a damaged skin barrier and how to fix it

9 signs of a damaged skin barrier and how to fix it

by Jo Boyden on Sep 06 2024
A healthy skin barrier is the secret to glowing skin. When it’s healthy, our skin looks radiant and plump, but when it’s damaged it can become prone to dryness, inflammation, breakouts and more! If you’ve been dealing with skin issues that just won’t go away, your skin barrier could well be to blame!  Keep reading to learn about 9 common signs of a damaged skin barrier, why yours may be compromised and the best solutions to fix it!   What is our skin barrier? The outer most layer of our skin, or technically known as the stratum corneum, our skin barrier is a complex system of lipids, proteins and cells. It’s the first line of defence against bacteria and external aggressors, from pollution and harsh weather conditions, to stress, smoking and even blue light damage from our digital devices! Think of it as a protective shield keeping irritants out and locking moisture in. What are the most common signs of a damaged skin barrier? Increased sensitivity Do you find your skin reacting to products that never used to be a problem? Unfortunately a damaged barrier can make your skin hypersensitive. This means that products with active ingredients like retinol or vitamin C might suddenly cause stinging or irritation. Aghh How to fix it: Simplify your skincare routine. Focus on soothing and hydrating skin. Opt for fragrance-free, hypoallergenic products designed specifically for sensitive skin, then slowly reintroduce active ingredients once your barrier is repaired. Dryness and Flakiness Dry, flaky skin can be a major sign that your skin barrier isn’t holding onto moisture the way it should. Even if you’re moisturising regularly, your skin might still feel parched and tight. How to fix it: You need to incorporate a hydrating serum rich in hyaluronic acid into your daily routine and up the ante with your moisturiser too! You want a nourishing moisturiser formulated with ceramides, hyaluronic acid and glycerin which will help lock in moisture and rebuild the barrier. Redness and Inflammation One of the first indicators of a damaged skin barrier is redness that just won’t go away. If your skin is constantly inflamed, blotchy, or has developed conditions like rosacea, it’s a sign that your protective layer is compromised. Without the barrier functioning properly, your skin is more susceptible to irritants and environmental factors that can cause persistent redness. How to fix it: Calm your skin with products containing anti-inflammatory ingredients like niacinamide, aloe vera, and chamomile. Avoid anything that could further irritate your skin, like harsh exfoliants or overly fragrant products. Breakouts and Acne When your skin barrier is compromised, your skin can overproduce oil to compensate for the lack of moisture. This can lead to clogged pores, breakouts, and even acne in those of us who normally have clear skin. How to fix it: Use a gentle cleanser that will remove excess oil without stripping the skin of its natural moisture. And make sure you avoid products that could clog your pores. Incorporate lightweight, oil-free moisturisers that hydrate without causing breakouts. Tightness and Discomfort Do you often feel like your skin is tight or uncomfortable, especially after cleansing? This could be a sign that your barrier is stripped of its natural oils. When your skin loses its protective lipids, it can no longer maintain its elasticity and comfort, leading to a sensation of tightness. How to fix it: The first step to fixing tight, uncomfortable skin is to replenish lost moisture and help rebuild the lipid layer of the barrier. Creamy or oil-based cleansers are great for restoring hydration while gently removing dirt and impurities and look for products rich in ceramides, fatty acids, glycerin, hyaluronic acid and squalane which will help restore the natural protective layer as well as lock in moisture. Hyperpigmentation A weakened barrier can make your skin more susceptible to damage from the sun and environmental pollutants, leading to an increase in hyperpigmentation such as dark spots, also known as age spots and sun spots! If you notice that your skin is developing more pigmentation issues, it could be a sign that your barrier needs some serious TLC. How to fix it: Incorporate antioxidants such as vitamin c and niacinamide into your skincare routine as they can help repair the skin and reduce the appearance of dark spots by neutralizing free radicals. Once your barrier is stronger you can then start introducing targeted treatments to fade hyperpigmentation. And sunscreen is a non-negotiable! Look for sunscreens that not only protect your skin from sun damage but also help repair hyperpigmentation too! Itching and burning sensations If your skin feels itchy, tingly, or has a burning sensation, even when you’re using your usual products, this could be a sign that your skin barrier has been compromised. This discomfort is your skin’s way of telling you it needs some extra care. How to fix it: Avoid using hot water on your face and skip harsh treatments like scrubs or peels. Opt for soothing, fragrance-free moisturisers and avoid over-washing. Dehydrated skin despite an oily appearance Ever had skin that feels oily on the surface but tight and dry underneath? This is a classic sign of a damaged barrier. Your skin might be overproducing oil to make up for the lack of moisture, leading to that uncomfortable mix of oily and dehydrated skin. How to fix it: Balance your skin with hydrating products that aren’t too heavy. Hyaluronic acid serums and light, non-greasy moisturisers can help provide the moisture your skin needs without adding excess oil. Ingredients like glycerin and squalane can provide moisture balance. Premature ageing Without proper protection, your skin is more exposed to free radicals and environmental damage which can accelerate the ageing process! Therefore a damaged skin barrier can lead to premature wrinkles, fine lines, and a loss of elasticity. How to fix it: Focus on repairing your barrier with nourishing, antioxidant-rich products that protect and strengthen your skin. Incorporate ingredients like peptides, vitamin C, vitamin E and sunscreen to help combat free radicals and boost collagen production.   Why do you have a damaged skin barrier? A damaged skin barrier can result from a variety of factors! Anything from your lifestyle and skincare habits to the environment. Here are the most common reasons your skin barrier could be compromised right now; Over-exfoliation Using exfoliants too frequently, whether physical scrubs or chemical exfoliants (like AHAs and BHAs), can strip away the outermost layer of your skin. This layer is crucial for protecting the underlying skin, and over-exfoliating can leave your skin vulnerable to damage. Harsh skincare products Products with high concentrations of active ingredients, such as retinol or acids, can be too strong for some skin types, especially if used too often or without proper moisturising and sun protection. Harsh cleansers with sulfates or alcohol can also strip your skin of its natural oils, leading to a weakened barrier. Environmental factors Exposure to extreme weather conditions—like harsh winds, cold temperatures, or excessive sun—can compromise your skin barrier. Pollution and other environmental toxins can also stress the skin, leading to barrier damage over time. Dehydration There are many reasons your skin might be dehydrated. From the products you are using (you need more moisture) to a change in weather or simply being over exposed to hot or cold air be it air con or heating! And then there is the chance we are simply dehydrated from not drinking enough water I know many of us can be guilty of that! Over-cleansing Washing your face too often or using water that’s too hot can strip your skin of its natural oils. This over-cleansing can disrupt the skin’s natural pH balance and lead to barrier damage. Eek! Stress and lack of sleep Sadly stress and inadequate sleep can really take a toll on our skin. Stress hormones like cortisol can lead to inflammation and impair the skin’s ability to repair itself, making your barrier more susceptible to damage. Allergies and irritants Using products that contain allergens or irritants, such as fragrances or certain preservatives, can trigger allergic reactions or irritation, leading to a compromised skin barrier. Poor diet Yes! You read that right. What you eat can definitely reflect on your skin! A diet lacking in essential nutrients like healthy fats, vitamins, and antioxidants, can weaken your skin barrier. Consuming too much sugar or processed foods can also lead to inflammation and skin issues. Ageing As you age, your skin naturally loses some of its ability to retain moisture and regenerate. This makes the skin barrier more prone to damage and less efficient at protecting against external factors. Medical Conditions Certain skin conditions, like eczema, psoriasis, or rosacea, inherently involve a compromised skin barrier. These conditions require specific care to help manage symptoms and protect the skin.   How to repair a damaged skin barrier If you now know your skin barrier has been damaged there are simple steps you can take to fix it so fear not! Just remember restoring your skin barrier won’t happen overnight though, so make sure you are consistent with your care and you will see improvements we promise! Here are a few general tips: Avoid hot water Ok so this is one I am definitely guilty of. I LOVE a piping hot shower or bath but I do know that this is damaging my skin! Sadly hot water can strip your skin of its natural oils, exacerbating dryness and irritation. Try to be less like me and use lukewarm water when at least cleansing your face! Stay Hydrated Drinking plenty of water helps to maintain your skin’s hydration levels from the inside out (one hand holding my water bottle as I type this!) Try to manage stress and get plenty of shut eye! Stress-reducing activities like meditation, listening to music and exercise can definitely help alleviate stress. And there is a reason “beauty sleep” is a thing! By trying to get enough sleep (7-9 hours day night) can really make a difference to your skin. Protect your skin from the sun Well this is definitely a given. We all know that the sun is the no. 1 cause of damage to our skin. And unfortunately a damaged barrier is more vulnerable to UV damage, so make sure to apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen daily. You should already be anyway! Simplify your routine and use nourishing skincare Less is more when your skin barrier is damaged. Stick to a basic cleanser, cut back on exfoliants, retinol creams, and other potentially irritating products and focus on gentle, hydrating serums and moisturisers formulated with nourishing and barrier-repairing ingredients including ceramides, hyaluronic acid, niacinamide and glycerin. These ingredients help to replenish your skin’s natural lipids and restore its protective function. Hyperpigmentation: The causes and the best treatments

Hyperpigmentation: The causes and the best treatments

by Jo Boyden on Aug 30 2024
Hyperpigmentation is a fairly common skin condition and affects people of all ages. But if you are one of the many dealing with stubborn dark spots or patches on your skin you are likely wondering why and how you can get rid of it! Understanding what causes hyperpigmentation is the first step in effectively treating it. Read on to discover everything you need to know about hyperpigmentation, what the most common causes are, as well as the best options for achieving a more even, radiant complexion.   What is hyperpigmentation? Hyperpigmentation is when certain areas of your skin become darker than the surrounding skin. This happens because of an excess production of melanin, the pigment that gives your skin its colour. Hyperpigmentation can appear as very small brown, black, grey or pink spots, or patches but can also cover larger areas of your skin, usually on your face. These spots or patches are more commonly known as brown spots, age spots, sun spots or as our grandparents used to call them, liver spots. While hyperpigmentation is not harmful, and can be common in people of all ages and skin types, it can definitely be frustrating! Fortunately, with the right treatments, you can effectively reduce the appearance of hyperpigmentation and restore a more even complexion!   What are the most common types of hyperpigmentation? Age Spots Also known as liver spots (as our grandparents would have called them back in the day!), age spots are flat, brown, grey, or black spots that typically appear on sun-exposed areas of the skin as you age. In short, age spots tend to develop in people over the age of 50 and are the result of prolonged UV exposure over the years.  Sun Spots Also caused by UV exposure, sun spots, medically known as actinic keratoses, are similar in appearance to age spots but can occur at any age. Although they can commonly appear on the face, you can also find sun spots all over areas of the body which has been exposed to the sun. The biggest difference between harmless age spots and sun spots is the texture. Age spots are smooth and flat, but potentially dangerous sun spots usually feel rough and scaly. Melasma Also known as chloasma, or “the mask of pregnancy”! the potential main triggers for Melasma is genetics, hormonal fluctuations and sun overexposure. Very common in pregnancy, melasma can suddenly appear in the form of brown patches usually on your face.   What causes hyperpigmentation? Several factors can actually contribute to hyperpigmentation, although sun exposure is the no.1 cause! Sun Exposure UV rays from the sun trigger melanin production, leading to sunspots and dark patches, especially on areas frequently exposed to the sun. Hormonal Changes Conditions like melasma, often triggered by pregnancy or birth control pills, cause dark, blotchy patches on the skin. Inflammation Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation can result from acne, injuries, or skin conditions like eczema, where the skin overproduces melanin during healing. Age Over time, the skin’s ability to regulate melanin production diminishes, leading to age spots.   How to get rid of hyperpigmentation Ultimately to prevent or reduce hyperpigmentation you need to do 4 things; Wear sunscreen Sadly exposure to the sun, (which we know ramps up over the summer months!) can both worsen existing age spots and sun spots, as well as encourage new ones to form! The most effective way to therefore prevent this from happening is to apply sunscreen (at least SPF 30) liberally and religiously even single day. You know I preach about how sunscreen should be a non-negotiable step in your skincare routine come rain, hail or shine though! Use brightening products Products containing Vitamin C, niacinamide and retinol are all powerful allies in the fight against pigmentation. These ingredients work to lighten dark spots and even out your skin tone, leaving you with a brighter, more uniform complexion. Look for formulas with high concentrations of active ingredients for maximum efficacy. Just remember skincare requires patience and consistency to reap the long-term benefits!  Exfoliate regularly Regular exfoliation is key to fading age spots and pigmentation. Alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) and beta hydroxy acids (BHAs) help slough off dead skin cells, promoting cell turnover and revealing fresher, more evenly-toned skin. Consider using a gentle chemical exfoliant a few times a week to target discolouration without irritating your skin. Wear protective clothing Wearing protective clothing will also help fight hyperpigmentation by shielding your skin from harmful UV rays, which as we know are a major cause of age spots, sun spots and uneven skin tone. Fabrics with a tight weave and sun-protective properties will block the penetration of UV rays, reducing the risk of sun-induced pigmentation. Wide-brimmed hats, long sleeves, and UV-protective fabrics are effective at minimizing direct sun exposure, preventing existing pigmentation from worsening, and helping to maintain an even skin tone over time. And don’t forget your peepers! sunglasses are a must too!   The best products to fade hyperpigmentation As mentioned, one of the simplest ways to protect your skin from hyperpigmentation is to wear sunscreen daily, no matter what the weather is like. However if you are looking for products to fade your already pigmentated skin, we have the solution for you!   Vie Collection Mela White Protective Sunscreen SPF 30 This is not only an amazing daily sunscreen to protect skin from UV rays, but it’s also formulated with two high-tech ingredients that act against dark spots and free radicals. With regular use your dark spots will become less visible and your skin more unified. It’s fantastic!  Pevonia C Complex with oxyzomes Vitamin C and Hyaluronic Acid work together to hydrate, correct photo damage and drench your skin with repairing antioxidants for a revitalized, youthful glow. It’s really good stuff and I’m testament to that!  Medicalia L Retinol Smoothing Cream This powerful yet gentle retinol cream is a must in the fight against Hyperpigmentation! Formulated with retinol and Glycolic and Lactic Acid, it’s an excellent resurfacing and lightening cream for photodamaged skin. Just be sure to introduce it slowly and apply before bed. Paired with niacinamide, it prevents the formation of hyperpigmentation and reduces melanin production. The result, brighter, more even skin! Vita B3 Concentrated Solution Boost your skincare routine with a shot of vitamin B3 to visibly improve skins radiance while reducing the appearance of dark spots. 10% vitamin B3 (niacinamide) acts by slowing down the transport of melanin to the keratinocytes (the most common type of skin cell constituting the epidermis) effectively decreasing pigmentation while reinforcing the protective functions of the skin barrier for the optimal skin health. The concentrate’s light, melting texture allows the active ingredients to penetrate the skin for outstanding efficiency and immediate results. Skin is brighter, more uniform and more visibly radiant. After continued use, hyperpigmentation is significantly reduced.
Salicylic acid: What is it and how will it benefit your skin

Salicylic acid: What is it and how will it benefit your skin

by Jo Boyden on Aug 17 2024
Whether you’re battling breakouts, dealing with oily skin, or just looking for a way to keep your complexion clear, you’ll want to ensure salicylic acid is an ingredient in your skincare! But what exactly is salicylic acid? And how does it transform you skin? Keep reading for everything you need to know about salicylic acid—why it’s so effective, how to use it, and why it deserves a spot in your skincare routine. What is salicylic acid? Salicylic acid is a beta hydroxy acid (BHA) known for its exfoliating and anti-inflammatory properties, commonly used in skincare. it penetrates deep into the pores, dissolving excess oil and exfoliating dead skin cells. This helps prevent and treat breakouts, blackheads, and whiteheads. Unlike some harsher acne treatments, salicylic acid is gentle yet effective, making it suitable for frequent use (we are talking 2-3 times a week). Incorporating salicylic acid into your skincare routine can lead to clearer, smoother skin! How does salicylic acid work? By breaking down the bonds between dead skin cells, salicylic acid encourages their shedding, which helps to prevent pore blockages that lead to breakouts. Is salicylic acid suitable for all skin types? Salicylic acid is ideal for those with oily or acne-prone skin, as it helps control excess oil production and prevents the formation of new pimples. However, it can also benefit other skin types, particularly those who are susceptible to the occasional breakout or congested skin. Can salicylic acid cause skin irritation? Salicylic acid can sometimes cause skin irritation, especially if you use it excessively or tend to have sensitive skin.  Common signs of irritation include redness, dryness, peeling, or a burning sensation. Just before you test the product first before applying all over your face. How often should you use salicylic acid? How often you use skincare formulated with salicylic acid really depends on the product itself as well your skin specific skin type. If you are new to salicylic acid, we recommend you start with using it once or twice a week and gradually increase to daily use if your skin tolerates it. It's also important to follow up with a good moisturiser to keep your skin hydrated. Can you use salicylic acid with other skincare ingredients? Yes, you can use salicylic acid with other skincare ingredients, but it's important to be cautious. Combining salicylic acid with soothing and hydrating ingredients like niacinamide and hyaluronic acid, can work wonders for your skin. However, be careful when combining it with other exfoliants like glycolic acid or retinol, as this can increase the risk of irritation. It's best to introduce these ingredients gradually into your routine or use them on alternate days to avoid over-exfoliating your skin. How to incorporate salicylic acid into your skincare routine Start with a cleanser containing salicylic acid, using it slowly to allow your skin to adjust. If your skin tolerates it well, you can gradually increase usage or introduce additional products like serums or spot treatments. Always follow with a moisturiser and sunscreen, as salicylic acid can make your skin more sensitive to the sun. The ultimate skincare routine for sensitive skin

The ultimate skincare routine for sensitive skin

by Jo Boyden on Jul 04 2024
If you have sensitive skin, you’ll know how challenging it can be to find the right skincare products that actually work and don’t just exacerbate your already inflamed skin! Redness, irritation, and dryness can make it seem next to impossible to achieving that calm, radiant complexion you so wish for, but impossible it is not! With the right approach and gentle products, you can soothe your sensitive skin and maintain its overall health. Keep reading for our guide to the ultimate skincare routine for sensitive skin. A guide we’ve tailored just for you, featuring must-have products and tips to keep your sensitive skin happy and healthy. Firstly though, why are you suffering from sensitive skin? Unfortunately sensitive skin can be caused by a variety of factors. It might be due to genetics (thanks mum and dad!), making your skin more reactive to certain triggers. Environmental factors such as pollution, extreme weather conditions, and exposure to harsh chemicals can also contribute. Over exfoliated skin or simply overuse of skincare products, especially those with strong fragrances or alcohol, can strip the skin's natural barrier, leading to sensitivity. Stress and hormonal changes can also play a significant role, disrupting the skin's balance. Additionally, underlying skin conditions like eczema or rosacea can cause heightened sensitivity. It’s best to try and identify and avoid your triggers (along with using gentle skincare products) to help manage your sensitive skin. The best skincare routine for sensitive skin Step 1: Start with a Gentle Cleanser The first step in any skincare routine is cleansing, but for sensitive skin, it's crucial to use a gentle, fragrance-free cleanser that doesn’t strip away natural oils. Opt for a fragrance-free, non-foaming cleanser with soothing and healing ingredients like aloe vera, glycerin, niacinamide and chamomile. Try: Naturys 2 in 1 Makeup Remover + Micellar Gel. Formulated with nasturtium and niacinamide, this natural 2-in-1 cleanser and makeup remover is good or all skin types but has been specifically targeted for sensitive skin. Gently but effectively it removes makeup, dirt and impurities from face and eyes without causing any irritation or dryness, leaving skin instantly fresh, soothed and more supple. How to Use: Use your fingertips to apply the cleanser and gently massage onto your face in circular motions. Rinse with lukewarm water and pat your skin dry with soft towel to avoid further irritation. Step 2: Hydrating Oil Oils are like potent treatments that target specific concerns deeply nurturing the skin. For sensitive skin, choose an oil that focuses on hydration and calming effects. Try: Naturys Sensitive Hydra Oil. This quick-absorbing soothing face oil is particularly suitable for sensitive skin types and is the best ally against skin redness and irritation, signs of stress, pollution and blue light. Rich in plant-based active ingredients, including blueberry oil, bisabolol, and lycopene, it protects skin from environmental damage while diffusing redness and discomfort. How to Use: Apply a few drops to clean, dry or slightly damp face and neck, gently patting it into your skin until fully absorbed. Can be used alone or mixed with your moisturiser. Step 3: Moisturiser Moisturising is essential for locking in hydration and protecting your skin barrier. Choose a moisturiser that is free from fragrances, dyes, and other potential irritants and instead opt for nourishing, soothing ingredients that will hydrate, calm and improve skin. Try: Naturys De-Sensitive Cream. The perfect antidote for reactive and dehydrated skin prone to redness, this beautifully nourishing cream effectively calms skin while combatting redness. Copper Tripeptides also help promote collagen and elastin production, firming the skin and reducing fine lines while increasing oxygen supply for more supple skin. How to Use: Apply the moisturiser to your face and neck, gently massaging it in until fully absorbed. Step 4: Sunscreen Sunscreen is a non-negotiable step in any skincare routine. But sadly sensitive skin is particularly vulnerable to sun damage so sunscreen is a must. Sensitive skin needs broad-spectrum protection without harsh chemicals. A mineral-based sunscreen is less likely to irritate and provides effective protection. Look for ingredients like zinc oxide or titanium dioxide. Try: Hubislab Post Rays UV Protect Sun Block SPF 50+++. Not only is it formulated with both zinc oxide and titanium dioxide so perfect for sensitive and ageing skin since zero irritation, it’s also rich in hydrolyzed Collagen and peptides keeping skin nourished, soft and supple! Its invisible matte formula also applies smoothly and stays on all day long! How to Use: Apply a generous amount of sunscreen to your face and neck every morning, even on cloudy days. Step 5: Weekly Treatment – Exfoliator A weekly treatment like an exfoliator can provide essential extra care for sensitive skin. And I know you might be thinking exfoliating sounds counterintuitive, after all you don’t want to exacerbate your already irritated skin, right? The thing is exfoliating is essential for everyone, no matter your skin type. Why? Because it removes dulling dead skin cells, prevents clogged pores and encourages cell turnover, you just have to be careful what sort of exfoliator you use! Try: Naturys Sensitive Enzymatic Peeling Cream. Formulated for all skin types including those suffering with common skin sensitivities, this exfoliant and regenerating cream gently removes dead cells and unclogs the pores without causing any irritation. As you work the cream into your skin, the pineapple and papaya enzymes, combined with AHAs and rice microgranules, gently but deeply exfoliate skin eliminating impurities, blackheads, dead cells, sebum and toxins. Your complexion after? Softer, smoother, calmer and brighter! How to Use: Apply the peel 1-2 times a week onto the face and delicately massage. Leave on for 5-7 minutes and rinse with warm water. Avoid the eye contours. Additional tips for sensitive skin Patch Test New Products: Always test new products on a small area of your skin before applying them to your entire face to ensure you don’t have an adverse reaction. Avoid Harsh Ingredients: Steer clear of products with alcohol, fragrances, and harsh exfoliants. Look for labels that indicate "hypoallergenic" and "non-comedogenic." Stay Hydrated and Maintain a Healthy Diet: Drinking plenty of water and eating a balanced diet rich in antioxidants can help support your skin's health. Remember taking care of sensitive skin doesn’t have to be daunting. By following this ultimate skincare routine and using gentle, effective products, you can reduce irritation, strengthen your skin barrier, and achieve a calm, radiant complexion. Remember consistency and patience are key!
Heading on holidays? The best products to prep your skin

Heading on holidays? The best products to prep your skin

by Jo Boyden on Jun 21 2024
Heading on holidays soon? You need to get prepped! And I’m not just talking about packing your bags (although that of course is essential!) I mean getting your skin trip ready too! Whether you’re jetting off to a tropical island, heading overseas for an adventure or planning a winter escape to the snow, ensuring your skin is prepped from head to toe is key to looking and feeling your best. Here’s your guide to the best beauty tips and products you should be including in your pre-holiday beauty routine! Focus on exfoliation The best way to get pre-holiday glowing skin is to exfoliate! Exfoliating before your trip can help remove dead and dry skin cells, leaving your complexion smoother and more visibly radiant. Exfoliate 2-3 times in the weeks prior to going away for the best results. Just be sure not to over-exfoliate! For your face, choose a mild exfoliator with natural ingredients like fruit enzymes or fine grains to avoid irritation. Try: Phytomer Cyfolia Radiance Exfoliating Cream – This creamy exfoliator gently exfoliates skin to reveal a truly radiant complexion! It features two organic exfoliants – argan kernels and pomegranate seeds, as well as Algae, Oligomer and Orange water that work together to immediately clear away rough and dull skin for a visibly softer, smoother and brighter complexion after every single application. When it comes to your body, using a nourishing body scrub will do wonders for your skin! Another option is to try daily dry body brushing. As well as sweeping away dead skin cells, body brushing leaves your skin feeling refreshed and invigorated. Try: Pevonia Silky Skin Body Scrub. This indulgent body scrub gives you, well, seriously silky skin! Oh, and its subtle scent is divine thanks to its key ingredients Chamomile, Rosemary, Lemon and Sage. Simply apply it to wet skin (use warm water) and gently massage all over your body in a circular motion. Then rinse and cleanse thoroughly with a gentle shower gel. By exfoliating the skin, it will eliminate any dead skin cells as well as dry flaky skin, making way for that silky smooth skin every time. Ham up the hydration Your skin will likely feel the effects of your holiday no matter whether you plan to lay on the beach, go camping with friends, or hit the ski slopes! The combination of travelling, new environments and likely lack of sleep can dehydrate your skin quickly! Therefore it is essential to pay particular attention to your skins hydration in days leading up to your trip. Make sure you incorporate an intensive moisturiser into your pre-holiday beauty routine to see your skin through. Apply it daily after your shower to lock in moisture. Try: Pevonia Crepe-No-More Body Cream. This product really is a a necessity for anyone wanting to achieve truly smooth, supple skin. Rich in superfood Longan Fruit, anti-inflammatory actives, plant-based antioxidants, hydrating powerhouse Hyaluronic Acid, firming Marine Collagen and nourishing Shea Butter! it will both firm and tighten the look of skin (yup!) reduce any crepiness and fat accumulations, all while deeply hydrating your skin. Honestly, after every use my skin feels super soft, supple but also looks visibly radiant and I’ve noticed how much firmer it feels in just a few weeks of use! You can also switch to a hydrating body wash that cleanses without stripping your skin of its natural oils. Use a self-tanner should you be heading on a beach getaway If you’ve neglected to exfoliate, moisturise and buff your body over the winter months, I’m certain I can say you skin hasn’t had a little heathy tan for a while either. With your pins making an appearance once again its time to get out the self-tanner for beach or pool side prep! Opt for a gradual tanning lotion or cream for a natural, sun-kissed glow. 12 beauty tips these celebrities swear by

12 beauty tips these celebrities swear by

by Jo Boyden on May 18 2024
Ever wondered how your favourite celebrities manage to defy the ageing process and maintain their flawless complexion year after year? While genetics may play a role, the secrets to their youthful, glowing skin often lie in carefully curated skincare routines and expert advice passed down from generation to generation. From A-list actors to supermodels gracing the runway, keep reading as we uncover the top beauty tips these celebrities swear by, 12 simple strategies you and I are already likely doing daily, just not religiously like them! Do not skimp on the amount of water you drink "I swear by hydration. Drinking plenty of water keeps my skin looking plump and youthful." - Jennifer Aniston Keeping yourself hydrated both inside and out is one of the most essential tips when it comes to your skin. This is because water is vital for maintaining skin health and youthfulness. It hydrates the skin from within promoting elasticity and plumpness while reducing the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines. Hydration also supports skin cell function, collagen production, and repair processes. Additionally, water helps flush out toxins, preventing breakouts and promoting clear skin. By strengthening the skin's natural barrier, water protects against environmental damage and maintains an even skin tone. Ultimately, staying hydrated is essential for preserving the youthful appearance and vitality of our skin! Try to drink a minimum of 8 glasses of water a day and for that much needed added nourishment make sure you always moisturise morning and night! We recommend using formulations rich in hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid attracts and retains moisture, plumping and hydrating the skin. In fact the molecules can hold 1,000 times its weight in water! This helps to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, leaving the skin smooth, supple, and youthful. We are obsessed with the Pevonia Hyaluronic Acid Hydra Serum and Hyaluronic acid Hydra Mist! Do things every day that will help you de-stress “I think that anything you can do to remove stress will give you a better glow. That’s the number one answer…" Cate Blanchett Stress is an inevitable part of life, but its impact doesn’t just affect our mood, it can significantly affect the health and appearance ofour skin too! Stress triggers the release of cortisol, a hormone that can throw our skin out of whack. It can cause the increase of oil production, leading to clogged pores and breakouts. It also has the ability tobreak down collagen and elastin, causing wrinkles and sagging. Plus, stress can make skin conditions like eczema and psoriasis flare up, making our skin red, itchy, and inflamed. All these things combined can leave our complexion looking dull and tired, far from the youthful glow so many celebrities promote! That's why it's important to find ways to de-stress and take care of our skin. Whether it's through deep breathing, yoga, meditation, listening to music, or simply some self-care time, giving ourselves a break can help keep our skin looking its glowing best! Eat a diet rich in Antioxidants “I eat lots of berries; they’re full of antioxidants" - Olivia Palermo Antioxidants can do wonders for our skin! And it’s true, a rich source comes from berries! Antioxidants help fight off free radicals, which are harmful molecules that can damage our skin cells and accelerate ageing. Berries like blueberries, strawberries, and raspberries are packed with antioxidants like vitamin C and polyphenols, which can help protect our skin from environmental damage, reduce inflammation, and promote a brighter, more youthful complexion. Incorporating these colourful fruits into our diet can nourish our skin from the inside out, leaving it looking radiant and healthy. We also love antioxidant rich skincare too! Here are three of our favourites; Naturys Anti-Age Antioxidant Facial Toner, Pevonia Vitamin C Complex and Pevonia’s Micro-Retinol Essential Moisturiser Always remove makeup before bed! "I've never gone to bed without washing my face. Never in my life. Even if I'm sick, tired — heck, even if I was drunk! I might forget to take off the dress, the shoes, and the jewellery, but not the makeup. It's second nature." - Salma Hayek Not washing your face before bed can have detrimental effects on your skin. Throughout the day, dirt, oil, and environmental pollutants accumulate on our skin's surface, clogging pores and leading to breakouts. By neglecting to cleanse your face at night, these impurities remain trapped, causing inflammation and acne. Additionally, makeup left on overnight can further exacerbate these issues, as it can mix with sweat and bacteria, increasing the risk of infections and irritation. Not cleansing your face before bed also disrupts the skin's natural renewal process, hindering its ability to repair and regenerate overnight! This can result in dullness and premature ageing! So, no matter how tired or tipsy you might be, get cleansing before hitting the hay! For hassle free cleansing use an all-rounder makeup remover like Phytomer’s Doux Contour Eye and Lip Waterproof Makeup Remover. It’s a fantastic and effectively melts away makeup and grime with minimum effort! Combining the effectiveness of an oil (a trio of oils in fact) and the gentleness of a lotion, this ultra-hydrating makeup remover, eradicates even the most stubborn of lips and eye makeup fast! Always wear sunscreen "Sunscreen, every single day, rain or shine. It's the best anti-ageing product out there." - Priyanka Chopra And we 100% agree! Sunscreen is hands down the no.1 defence against premature ageing! The harmful UV rays from the sun can cause a multitude of skin issues, including wrinkles, fine lines, sunspots, and sagging skin. By wearing sunscreen daily, you can protect your skin from these damaging effects and prevent premature ageing. UV radiation damages the skin's collagen and elastin fibres, leading to loss of elasticity and firmness, which are key contributors to aging skin. Additionally, UV exposure can result in hyperpigmentation, uneven skin tone, and the formation of wrinkles and fine lines. Using a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher helps shield the skin from both UVA and UVB rays, which are responsible for different types of damage. UVA rays penetrate deep into the skin and contribute to premature aging, while UVB rays primarily cause sunburns. Consistently wearing sunscreen, even on cloudy days or during the winter months, is essential for maintaining youthful-looking skin and protecting against the harmful effects of UV radiation. Incorporating sunscreen into your daily skincare routine is one of the best ways to prevent premature aging and maintain healthy, radiant skin for years to come. We love Medicalia – Sunscreen SPF 40 with Blue Light Shield. You might be a little reluctant to wear your sunscreen dailybecause quite frankly its smell and greasy texture puts you off, but that’s because you haven’t found a sunscreen that works for you! This one I promise you are going to love! It’s perfectly lightweight and does not leave a white case or greasy residue behind! It contains an exclusive mineral formula to shield skin from harmful sun rays, blue light damage and pollution! And what’s more, the formula is reef-safe and works for all skin types and tones too! Use eye cream daily “Never skip eye cream. It’s my secret weapon against fine lines and puffiness.” Sandra Bullock Your eyes are the most delicate area on your face and the first area to really age you! A good eye cream really can be game-changing when it comes to the pursuit of longer lasting youthful skin! Exfoliation is key “I start every day by exfoliating my face, something I’ve done for the past 40 years. I feel like it’s really contributed to my skin feeling fresh and smooth. Forty years ago, I read an article that said men always look five years younger than women who are their same age. They contributed that to them shaving every day, and the daily exfoliating with shaving making their skin look younger. I was like, I’m not going to let them get away with that!" Christie Brinkley Exfoliation is definitely key when it comes to skin looking younger! After all exfoliation promotes cell turnover, improving skin texture, and enhancing radiance. It also unclogs pores preventing breakouts while helping other products in your skincare routine absorb more effectively into skin. Just remember not every skin type can tolerate daily exfoliation and it depends on the exfoliator you use too! Its best to start slowly by exfoliating once or twice a week and if skin tends to be a little sensitive opt for fruit enzyme exfoliators which won’t irritate skin. Over-exfoliating or using harsh scrubs can strip the skin of its natural oils and lead to inflammation, redness, and sensitivity. Try incorporating facial massage into your daily skincare routine “Facial massages to boost blood flow and keep your skin looking fresh.” - Julia Roberts We couldn’t agree more! Facial massage offers a multitude of benefits for the skin, we just need to find the time to incorporate it into our day! Firstly, facial massage promotes improved circulation, delivering oxygen and essential nutrients to the skin while removing toxins. This enhanced blood flow results in a brighter, more radiant complexion, as well as improved skin tone and texture! Facial massage also stimulates the lymphatic syst

Worried about sagging skin? The best tips to firm your face

by Jo Boyden on May 03 2024
Ageing. We all know it’s inevitable, but no one wants to wake up one day and find gravity playing tricks on their face! Sadly though, sagging skin, fine lines and wrinkles are all a natural part of the ageing process, but this doesn't mean we can’t do something to help slow down or improve their appearance. With the right preventive measures and skincare routine, you can prevent your skin from sagging prematurely and maintain firm and youthful-looking skin for years to come. Keep reading as we discuss the best tips for preventing sagging skin and achieving a more lifted, toned complexion. Firstly though what is sagging skin on the face?Sagging skin on the face refers to the loss of firmness and elasticity in the skin, leading to a drooping or sagging appearance. It occurs when the skin's supportive structures weaken over time. As a result, the skin loses its ability to bounce back, causing it to sag or droop, particularly in areas such as the cheeks, jawline, and neck. What causes sagging skin? You could be asking yourself why is your face suddenly sagging? Sagging skin on the face is actually caused by multiple factors. These include; Loss of Collagen and Elastin One of the main contributors to skin sagging is the decrease in the production of collagen and elastin, responsible for skin elasticity and firmness. As we age, our collagen and elastin levels decline and as a result the skin loses its ability to bounce back, resulting in sagging and drooping.Decreased skin hydrationHydration plays a crucial role in maintaining the plumpness and suppleness of the skin. With age, the skin's ability to retain moisture diminishes, resulting in dryness and dehydration. Dehydrated skin is more prone to sagging and wrinkles, as it lacks the necessary moisture to maintain its elasticity.Reduction in Facial Fat and Muscle ToneAs we age, the fat pads in our face begin to weaken, causing the skin to lose volume and support. Additionally, weakening of the facial muscles over time can contribute to sagging and drooping of facial tissues. These changes in fat distribution and muscle tone can result in a loss of facial contour and definition.UV and Blue Light damageProlonged exposure to UV rays from the sun and Blue Light damage from our devices accelerates the breakdown of collagen and elastin fibres in the skin. UV and Blue Light damage weakens the skin's structural support, leading to premature ageing signs such as sagging, wrinkles, and fine lines.Lifestyle FactorsCertain lifestyle habits, such as smoking, poor nutrition, and excessive alcohol consumption, can contribute to the breakdown of collagen and elastin in the skin. Smoking, in particular, has been linked to accelerated skin ageing and sagging due to its detrimental effects on blood circulation and oxygen delivery to the skin tissues.GeneticsThis one you can blame on your parents for! Unfortunately genetics can also influence the rate at which our skin ages and how saggy it becomes! Sadly some of us will develop sagging skin much earlier than others due to our genetic makeup! Eek. How to prevent sagging skinWhile some degree of face sagging is a natural part of the ageing process, there are various things we can do to help improve skin firmness and minimize the appearance of sagging skin. Stay Hydrated Hydration is key to maintaining the elasticity and suppleness of our skin. It’s nothing new but drinking plenty of water throughout the day to keep your skin hydrated from the inside out is essential. Water helps keep your skin cells plump and hydrated which in turn promotes elasticity. Additionally, use hydrating skincare products containing ingredients like hyaluronic acid to lock in moisture and plump up the skin. Always wear sunscreen Protecting our skin from UV rays and Blue Light damage with sunscreen and sun-protective measures can dramatically help prevent premature ageing and in turn sagging skin. Wear sunscreen with a high SPF every. single. day no matter what the weather, always consider wearing a hat and seek shade during peak hours when UV is at its most damaging. Follow a Healthy Diet Eating a balanced diet rich in antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals can support skin health and prevent sagging. Include plenty of fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and healthy fats in your diet to provide your skin with essential nutrients and promote collagen production. Including foods such as broccoli, spinach, sweet potato, avocado, nuts and blueberries will work wonders!! Exercise Regularly Regular exercise not only helps maintain a healthy weight but also helps keep sagging skin at bay! This is because it promotes circulation and muscle tone, which can contribute to firmer, more lifted skin. Incorporate strength training exercises targeting the face, neck, and body to keep your muscles toned and prevent sagging. Practice Good Skincare Habits Follow a consistent skincare routine that includes cleansing, exfoliating and moisturising, this will keep skin supple and looking younger for longer. Use Skincare Products with Active Ingredients As well as products formulated with Hyaluronic acid, you’ll want to use skincare containing active ingredients known for their firming and tightening properties. The most effective ingredients to help prevent premature skin sagging includes retinol, peptides, vitamin C, and niacinamide. These ingredients can help stimulate collagen production, improve skin elasticity, and reduce the appearance of sagging. Incorporate facial massage into your daily routine Gentle facial massage techniques can help improve circulation and lymphatic drainage, promoting firmer, glowy and more lifted skin over time. Because it stimulates the facial muscles, a massage is like a mini-workout for your face. It engorges the muscles with blood to oxygenate the skin cells and gives “tone” to your muscles.Incorporate a gentle facial massage using your fingertips or a jade roller into your daily skincare routine. To learn more about the many benefits of facial massage click here Get enough zzzz’s We all know that getting enough sleep is important for our overall health, but did you know it can also improve your skin’s elasticity? During sleep, our body produces collagen and repairs any damage that’s been done to our skin throughout the day. Beauty Balm or Blemish Balm, as otherwise known, BB Creams are your 3-in-one foundation. They offer all the benefits of a light-to-medium foundation (and sometimes fuller coverage as well) in a speedier formula that nourishes, corrects, and protects your skin too! Its smoother texture also allows BB Cream to function as a primer by evening out skin tone for flawless makeup application. Why choose ELES Blue Light Radiant BB Cream 30? The coverage, the texture, the SPF, the ingredients, honestly this BB Cream has it all! It's light, but buildable, perfect for all skin types, provides skin with a supple glowy, flawless finish which looks like you aren’t wearing makeup at all, and it not only provides skin with SPF 30 to protect it from the sun's UV rays, but it also shields skin from Blue Light damage omitted from our screens too! Blue Light Damage if you don’t know has become a real problem, and just like the sun's harmful rays, blue light from our devices is ageing our skin, every single day. Scary right? And let’s face it we all spend much of the day glued to devices! But most importantly it’s the best of the best when it comes to skincare makeup thanks to its multitude of natural anti-ageing ingredients including the Kakadu Plum! Australia’s native superfruit thanks to its extraordinary composition of vitamins and antioxidants! Well known for their incredibly high vitamin content, Kakadu Plums contain over 3000mg of Vitamin C per 100g of fruit! That’s a vitamin C concentration 100 times higher than oranges! Crazy right? And when used in natural skincare products, this supercharged ingredient works to stimulate collagen production (essential for keeping the skin youthful), reduces fine lines and wrinkles, reduces the appearance of hyperpigmentation and any scarring, and visibly brightens the skin. So when we say this BB Cream is radiance-inducing, we are not joking! We all know the benefits of vitamin C, but this powerhouse ingredient is highly praised for its skin brightening benefits. Kakadu Plums also have an extremely rare antioxidant profile which means they are highly effective at detoxifying the skin and fighting off free radical damage caused by environmental factors such as pollution and sun exposure. What’s more, Kakadu plum oil has long been sought after for its antifungal, antibacterial and deeply soothing properties. It has the ability to help reduce redness, inflammation and irritation, restoring the skin's natural barrier while also encouraging elasticity and suppleness! beauty mistakes that make you look younger

19 beauty mistakes that can make you look older than you are

by Jo Boyden on Feb 23 2024
Ever find yourself staring in the mirror and wondering why you’re looking older than you actually are (or feel!) despite investing in expensive skincare and makeup products time and time again? Well you most certainly aren’t alone! Unfortunately many of us are guilty of accidentally adding years to our face thanks to a number of beauty mistakes we are making! From basking in the sun without SPF (eek!) to overdoing the foundation, keep reading as we count down 20 beauty mistakes that could be making you look older than you are! Becoming complacent with your skincare routine One of the cardinal sins in the beauty world is neglecting your skincare routine. No amount of makeup can compensate for poor skin health, nor will your makeup look good without proper skin prep! Yes, many of us are time poor, especially in the mornings, but I can’t express how important it is to invest, even just a little time, into a proper skincare routine. This starts with cleansing your skin every morning. Not moisturising before applying your makeup Hydrated skin is key to creating the perfect smooth surface for makeup. If your skin is dehydrated it can have an adverse effect on your foundation’s appearance and make skin appear dull, dry and flaky too! Both your morning and evening skincare routine, no matter how busy you are, should include a good nourishing serum and anti-ageing moisturiser. Try products formulated with marine collagen and hyaluronic acid, two anti-ageing wonder ingredients. Just be sure not to overload your skin with product or overstimulate the sebum glands as producing excess oil can cause foundation to slide off your skin revealing what might be a less than desired complexion. Try; Two BC best-sellers – Pevonia Hyalouric Acid Hydra Serum and Pevonia Age Correction Marine Collagen Cream. Ignoring eye care Unfortunately our eyes are the first area of our face to show ageing, so you need to show it love just as you would the rest of your face! This means applying a good eye cream daily! Like a moisturiser, an eye cream’s main objective is to deliver brightening and anti-ageing ingredients, however in a milder, gentler, safer dose. Moisturisers tend to have a much richer consistency in comparison to their counterpart which if applied under the eyes can prove too much, resulting in irritation, allergic reactions and milia.Eye creams also tend to be targeted to specific eye concerns such as crow’s feet, under eye bags and dark circles. Want younger looking eyes? Start wearing eye cream or eye gel today! Not applying sunscreen every. single. day This one's a no-brainer. Sun damage is the ultimate age accelerator, wreaking havoc on collagen and elasticity. You need to embrace daily sunscreen, rain or shine, if you don’t you really will be adding years to your face instead of reducing them! Forgetting regular exfoliation is a must As we age, our skin’s natural exfoliation process slows down and causes a build up of dead, dull skin, leading to a dull complexion and emphasizing fine lines. Regular exfoliation however helps to slough off the dead skin, promoting cell turnover and revealing a fresher, more youthful-looking complexion. Be sure to exfoliate at least once a week. If you’re worried about exfoliating because you have sensitive skin try using an enzyme exfoliator free of granules. For more on the beautifying benefits of exfoliation click here. Choosing the wrong shade of foundation We understand, you want your skin to look like you have a healthy glow but you shouldn’t attempt to achieve this with your foundation! Opting for a shade too dark or heavy will not only create a mask like effect but it will highlight wrinkles too! You need to choose a shade that perfectly matches your skin tone! Choosing the wrong foundation formula Talking of foundation, choosing the correct shade isn’t the only thing you have to worry about, choosing the incorrect formula can add years to your face too! There is this pretence that as we age, we should opt for thicker foundation to cover our imperfections but actually when you use a full-coverage foundation or are too heavy-handed with your application, the makeup settles into the wrinkles, pronouncing them even more! Just remember quality over quantity! Steer clear of the thick, full coverage foundation, instead opt for light, sheer bases that can be buildable, this way you can focus on areas that need that extra coverage. Try; ELES Cosmetics New Blue Light Radiant BB Cream 30. It literally primes, tints, nourishes, conceals and evens out skin tone, plus it protects skin from UVA, UVB, Blue Light and free radical damage, Genius! Using too much powder to set your makeup While setting makeup is important, piling on the powder can accentuate wrinkles and dryness. Use a light, mineral based powder and focus on the T-zone, and leave the rest of your skin with a natural finish. For mature, dry or dehydrated skin, opting for a good setting spray might be best. Try Pevonia’s Hyaluronic Acid Hydra Mist – Formulated with Hyaluronic Acid, ultra-calming Chamomile, Aloe, Green Tea and aromatic essential oils, this multi-tasting product helps makeup stay in place all day long (no more looking in the mirror mid-morning and seeing that makeup has disappeared from your face!) Rubbing Your Eyes The area around your eyes is the most delicate on your face, fact. When we are tired it’s easy to fall into the trap of rubbing our eyes, or when applying eye makeup with precision. We’ve all been guilty of pulling at our eyes I’m sure, but tugging, rubbing or pulling at your eye area can cause tiny blood vessels to break resulting in dark circles that make you look tired All. Of. The. Time. Instead, start applying an anti-ageing eye cream morning and night pronto! I am currently loving Vie Collection’s Chrono Eyes Puffiness-Dark Circles Wrinkles Cream. It’s a beautifully fine cream enriched with moisturising ingredients to nourish the eye area while reversing puffiness, dark circles and wrinkles! Seriously! Not looking after your eyebrows Just as the hair on our heads can thin with age, so do our eyebrows, so to look younger, we want to create instantly fake fullness and to do this we need to fill them in with the perfect brow pencil! Just be sure you don’t overfill the front part of your brow though! This area should have soft hair that graduates into more density. If you overfill this area you can make your eye brows look way too harsh. Read more on how to create perfect brows and get grooming! Using harsh eyeliner shade Yes, eyeliner is essential for defining eyes, I wouldn’t live without mine but using a harsh black liner can emphasize under-eye circles and make eyes appear smaller. Try using a brown or grey liner, focusing on tightlining for definition. Blush Blunder Applying blush too low can drag down your features. Sweep it upwards towards your temples for a youthful lift. Caking on concealer under your eyes Caking on concealer to hide dark circles can actually worsen the problem. Use a lightweight formula and apply it in thin layers. Neglecting your hands While your facial skincare routine is crucial, so many of us forget to look after our hands! An area always in the sun and as a result often show signs of ageing first! Apply sunscreen, moisturize, and treat them with the same care you give your face. Ignoring Your Neck and Decolletage Another forgotten area! And the area of your skin which can actually age you the most! Exposed to sunlight just as much as your face (and hands!), if your neck and decolletage aren’t cared for daily or protected with SPF, they can end up crepey and wrinkly so much earlier than they should! Whatever you do for your face you should do for your neck and decolletage too. There are neck and chest specific products you can use, try Pevonia’s Age Correction Rapid Restore Neck and Chest religiously, it’s a 2 in 1 serum and cream which hydrates, nourishes refines and brightens skin for a more youthful appearance while smoothing wrinkles too! But there is also nothing wrong with using your daily moisturiser or a hydrating body cream instead! Just start doing it now! Going to sleep with your makeup still on! I’m sure we’ve all been guilty of skipping our evening cleansing routine once in a while because the idea of peeling ourselves off our bed just doesn’t feel like an option, but did you know just how bad this can be for your skin? Not removing your makeup at night hinders the skin renewal process that takes place while you sleep. The days makeup and grime can clog the pores and trap dirt which can be damaging to your skin and fatigue (ageing!) signs start to appear. And then there are your eyes. Mascara makes your lashes stiff; it’s part of its job, but leaving it on while you sleep will cause the stiffness to turn into dryness that can trigger lashes to break and soon result to lash fallouts! For hassle free cleansing use a all rounder makeup remover like Phytomer’s Doux Contour Eye and Lip Waterproof Makeup Remover. It's a fantastic and effectively melts away makeup and grime with minimum effort! Combining the effectiveness of an oil (a trio of oils in fact) and the gentleness of a lotion, this ultra-hydrating makeup remover, eradicates even the most stubborn of lips and eye makeup fast!Another cleanser we are loving is Pevonia’s new CleanRefresh Foaming Oil Cleanser. Its oil formulation transforms into a luscious foamy cleanser on application when mixed with water and it leaves skin feeling fantastically refreshed and beautifully clean without the drying effects that other cleansers can leave. Plus its subtle scent is just heavenly. Not drinking enough water As I’m sitting here writing this, I can hold my hands up and say today so far I’ve only drunk 2 glasses of water when I should have in fact consumed at least a litre by now! Yes, it’s fact, water, or lack of should I say is a real skin ager!! And I know I must practice what a preach! The thing is I do, but some days I will admit it’s easy to forget! And when I do, I get cross with myself as I can see it in my skin! It’s drier, duller and devitalised. This is because drinking ‘enough’ water helps the body to flush out toxins while increasing blood flow to the skin which gives it an even tone and dewy appearance! And dewy skin equals youthful skin after all!Not a huge fan of water? Try a good herbal tea instead. Indulging in a shower or bath that is way to hot! How many of us are guilty of indulging in a hot shower or simply washing our faces with water set to a high temp. But really for best and healthy results we should be washing with lukewarm water. This is because extreme water temperatures will strip healthy natural oils from your skin quickly, making it dry and therefore age much faster. Water that’s too hot can also dilate your capillaries leading to spider veins. Not getting enough shut eye If I had a dollar for every time I said to my husband I must get to bed early tonight because I need more sleep and am fed up of looking old and tired, I’d be a rich woman. While they say practice what you preach, I am a testament that not getting enough sleep (when I could indeed fit in another 1-2 hours a night (darn netflix!) literally does age you. Beauty sleep is real! Poor sleep is quite literally to blame for premature ageing, dermatitis, eczema, acne, loss of collagen and more! Scary right? So let’s make a pact and try for that 8 hours + we really do need nightly and enjoy reduced puffiness and radiant skin instead!

Skincare routine for sensitive skin Identify your skin concerns First things first, understanding your specific skin concerns is crucial for tailoring your skincare routine. Sensitive skin can manifest in various ways, including dryness, redness, itchiness, and irritation. Know your triggers Specific ingredients and environmental factors can trigger skin sensitivity. Everything from fragrances and preservatives in soaps, beauty products and laundry detergents to the cold, sun and wind can cause skin irritation. Learn to know which are your triggers. To learn more about why you could be suffering from sensitive skin click here. Always choose gentle products with calming ingredients Opt for fragrance-free, hypoallergenic, and non-comedogenic products to minimize the risk of irritation. And always check the ingredients. You want your skincare products to be formulated with ingredients that soothe and nourish sensitive skin, such as aloe vera, chamomile, calendula and ceramides. These natural extracts have anti-inflammatory properties that can help soothe sensitive skin and reduce redness. Gentle Cleansing Now it's time to start your routine! Begin with your gentle cleanser designed for sensitive skin, which means it’ll be free from alcohol and harsh ingredients. Remember cleansing should be a soothing experience, not one that leaves your skin feeling tight and irritated!Try: Medicalia Gentle cleanser. Formulated with a unique natural blend of soothing Green Tea, Chamomile, and Oat Amino Acids, it beautifully cleanses skin both thoroughly and gently while preserving the skin barrier and reducing symptoms of inflammation too!“This cleanser is perfect for my super sensitive skin. My skin is so much more youthful! Smoother, plumper and visibly radiant! I couldn’t recommend more highly!!” Mary C Wear sunscreen every. single. day Protecting your sensitive skin from the sun's harmful UV rays is imperative so sun protection is non-negotiable, especially since UV rays can exacerbate sensitivity leading to redness and irritation.Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen of at least SPF 30 and you’re best to go for physical sunscreens like zinc or titanium dioxide. Fragrance-free formulas and those that are free of ingredients like phthalates and parabens will also reduce your exposure to formulas that might irritate your skin. Be sure to reapply if you are outside for a long period of time!Try: Medicalia Sunscreen SPF 40 with Blue Light Shield.“Love this product it gives all day sun protection doesn’t mark clothing and gives my skin a healthy glow I’m hooked!” Jan C Exfoliate skin but don’t over-exfoliate! Exfoliation is essential, even for those of us with sensitive skin. This is because exfoliating can promote cell regeneration, unclog pores and improve skin texture. The problem is, that exfoliation can come with risks of irritation, inflammation and dryness, so it is essential to choose the right exfoliators! Then there is also the issue of over-exfoliation, which can strip the skin's natural barrier leading to increased sensitivity. So if you have sensitive skin, start by limiting its use to only once a week and use a gentle exfoliator with mild exfoliating agents like fruit acids or enzymes. For more on exfoliation and sensitive skin and what to do click here. Stay consistent And finally, consistency is key when it comes to caring for your sensitive skin. Once you’ve found what works, stick to it and daily.Aside from your skincare routine, there are also other things you can do to help calm your sensitive skin. Stress less, sleep more and watch what you eat. Certain foods and drinks can contribute to your skin's sensitivities. Limit spicy foods, caffeine and alcohol, and feast on a diet rich in antioxidants and omega-3 fatty acids to promote skin health from within. Makeup tips for sensitive skinNow you’ve got your skincare routine down pat, it's time to master your makeup! Check ingredients As with your skincare routine, make sure you opt for "non-comedogenic" makeup to prevent pore-clogging and potential breakouts. You’ll also want to invest in fragrance free formulas as artificial scents can be a common trigger for sensitivity. Mineral Makeup is best. Clean makeup brushes regularly We all know dirty brushes can harbour bacteria which in turn can further irritate already irritated skin! Make sure you clean your makeup brushes regularly! To learn more about how often you should clean and replace your makeup brushes click here. Less is more Yes, we want to conceal sensitive skin whether it be facial redness or unwanted blemishes, but just remember less is always more!Simply minimise the number of makeup layers you apply to your face to reduce the risk of irritation and if you’re suffering from facial redness, try using a multi-tasking CC cream.Unlike tinted moisturisers, foundations and even BB Creams, these miracle formulas are colour correcting. So instead of applying a thick layer of opaque makeup to cover the redness, the CC Cream’s Photonic Crystal Technology “offsets” redness, wrinkles and other skin imperfections, subtly illuminating the skin. This means less coverage is required if any at all. In fact, men can and do use CC Creams to even out their skin tone as it doesn’t look like makeup.Try: ELES Luminous CC Cream 20, you’ll be so glad you did!“I’m loving my new CC Cream! I was recommended it by a friend as I suffer from facial redness and sensitive skin and this product does an amazing job at colour correcting so the redness is beautifully concealed but my skin feels calm with a nice natural glow at the same time. Would highly recommend it.” Sarah MIf colour correction isn’t something you need make sure you go for a breathable, lightweight liquid formula.Try; best-selling ELES Liquid Powder Mineral Foundation. It’s silky, mineral-enriched and provides skin with broad spectrum sun protection. Its liquid formulation glides beautifully onto sensitive skin setting as a soft, powder finish, however it does not clog skin! Brilliant stuff. “The ELES liquid to powder is PHENOMENAL. I will never try another foundation. The foundation smooths over your skin so easily, providing good medium coverage, evening out skin tone, its completely non-irritating, and doesn't clog my skin.” Lucy G Patch test It’s always a good idea to patch test any new makeup products when it comes to sensitive or reactive skin, before applying all over your face! Remove makeup before bed And finally, always remember to remove your makeup before bed no matter how lazy you might be feeling! Use a gentle, fragrance-free makeup remover or micellar water. Nighttime is when your skin goes into repair mode, so it needs to be free of any pore clogging dirt and grime!

Be sure to cleanse both morning and night, but we picky with what products you use. You don’t want to choose a harsh cleaner that’ll strip your skin of its natural oils as this can lead to an increase in oil production and in turn more potential breakouts! Eek. You want to look for gentle formulations rich in ingredients such as salicylic acid or lactic acid as they can help prevent the buildup of sebum (which can contribute to acne.)Try Medicalia Clarifying Cleanser. With a balanced blend of lactic and salicylic acid the gentle cleanser works quickly and effectively to eliminate toxins, impurities, surface bacteria, and make-up. It’s ideal for inflamed, sensitive, acne prone and oily skin types.“I have problem skin & after using this product my face is clear & people have commented on the changes.” Laurie Exfoliate weekly, but be sure to be gentle Incorporating a mild exfoliant into your skincare routine can do wonders in the fight against acne. Exfoliating will help to remove any dead skin cells sitting on the surface of your skin which can clog pores and lead to breakouts!Just remember over exfoliating can have the adverse effect and actually irritate your skin so make sure to exfoliate just once a week to start and use a gentle exfoliator.Try Phytomer’s Vegetal Exfoliant with Natural Enzymes. It’s a soft exfoliant for even the most sensitive or rosacea prone skin and uses natural enzymes to encourage cell turnover without scrubbing or irritating your skin.“Gentle on the skin and worked well even for my acne prone skin.” OliveIf you do love a granular scrub though opt for a gentle version like Pevonia’s Gentle Exfoliating Cleanser.Formulated with jojoba beads, Saponaria and chamomile,it gently polishes skin with its unique creamy, granular texture, removing dead skin cells, impurities and toxins to reveal instant radiance and softer, smoother skin too! You’ll love the immediate gratification you’ll get from this formidable favourite of ours.“This is the best exfoliating cleanser I have ever used. I'm so impressed with the results, my skin feels so much smoother and cleaner.” Chloe Never skip your moisturiser Even though sometimes applying moisturiser to oily, acne prone skin can seem counterintuitive, it is essential as you want to steer clear of a damaged skin barrier! With no moisture at all, your skin would become dehydrated and begin to over-compensate by producing more oil! Something you definitely don’t need when it comes to oily, blemish and acne prone skin!Instead look for lightweight, oil-free moisturisers that won’t feel heavy on your skin.Try: Phytomer Acnipur Blemish Solution Fluid. This lightweight gel-cream works amazingly on problematic skin reducing overall breakoutsThe formula also helps eliminate shine for a clean, matte complexion. With regular use, this acne treatment not only helps diminish the appearance of existing blemishes, but it prevents future breakouts too!“This fluid is almost like a serum but lighter in texture. I use it after I wash my face morning and night. I have noticed a reduction in breakouts on my skin and also a more mattifying appearance on my skin”. Joanne Never skip on sunscreen Some acne treatments can make your skin more sensitive to the sun, so protecting your skin is crucial to prevent post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation and sun damage. The Sun, heat and humidity can also cause oil glands to become overactive, which in turn can lead to acne breakouts! To prevent these breakouts choose and oil-free, non-comedogenic sunscreen and apply it liberally daily! Be aware of what you are eating What you eat can have a huge impact your skin's health so it’s imperative if you are suffering from acne to Incorporate a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, and limit your intake of processed foods and sugary treats. Consuming foods high in antioxidants and vitamins can help promote clear, radiant skin too!Try;Fatty fish such as salmon and tunaYellow and orange fruits and vegetables such as carrots, apricots, and sweet potatoesSpinach, kale and other dark green and leafy vegetablesTomatoesBlueberriesAvocadoswhole-wheat breadbrown ricequinoaSoybeans Reduce your stress levels Sounds easier said than done I know, we all have those days, weeks, months even where we are super stressed but said stress can lead to acne flare ups! This is because stress-related hormone CRH can bind to receptors in the skin’s sebaceous glands, increasing oil production. Excess oil production can then cause pimples. So, if you keep breaking out and just can’t understand why, stress might be to blame, so try to relax!Try; listening to relaxation music or meditate. Also, something as simple as taking a relaxing bubble bath every evening can really help. Exercise is also imperative! While exercising will increase blood flow, helping nourish skin cells and keeping them vital, it has also been accountable for reducing stress-related acne. Keep your phone clean! And your pillowcase too! Yup, a sudden breakout can be from something as simple as your phone or pillowcase (well anything that touches your face really that could be hosts for harmful bacteria!) And anytime you hold your phone to your face or lie on your pillowcase you are spreading the bacteria to your skin. So, if you haven’t done so for a while, try sanitizing your phone screen and wash that pillowcase of yours more often, it could make a big difference to your skin. Hydrate inside and out We all need to stay hydrated every single day, after all our bodies can’t operate effectively without water, but when I say stay hydrated, I mean drive plenty of water and drink it throughout the day, 8 glasses minimum!Hydration is key to maintaining healthy skin as it helps flush out toxins and keeps your skin looking plump and radiant. Crow’s feet: How to improve its appearance

by Jo Boyden on Nov 03 2023
We’ve all heard of crow’s feet, many of us over the age of 40 have likely encountered them, but how do you reduce their appearance, or prevent them from forming in the first place? If you are on the lookout for natural ways to treat crow’s feet around your eyes, look no further! We've put together a list of top tips and natural remedies to help you treat your crow’s feet effectively, without the use of harsh products or invasive procedures (the idea of fillers terrifies me!) Keep reading as we reveal them all! Firstly what are crow’s feet? A common skincare concern, crow’s feet (otherwise known as expression lines) are fine lines and wrinkles that form on the outer corners of your eyes as you age. As the skin around our eyes is exceptionally delicate (and thin!) crow’s feet can start to form fairly early for some due to constant muscle use in this area, as well as a gradual reduction in skin's elasticity. What causes crow’s feet?Crow’s feet are caused by a combination of factors, including ageing (due to a decrease in skin's collagen and elastin production), sun exposure, and repetitive facial expressions. Diet and your genetics can also be contributing factors. How do you get rid of crow’s feet? While it’s impossible to stop your eyes from ageing, there are a number of natural ways to reduce the appearance of crow’s feet and maintain a more youthful looking eye area. Here’s how; Hydration is key As we age the skin around our eyes becomes dryer, thinner and loses its elasticity which leads to fine lines and wrinkles! And unfortunately the dryer this delicate area, the more visible those unwanted wrinkles are!Keeping your delicate eye area well-hydrated can help plump up the skin and minimize the appearance of fine lines. Use a hydrating eye cream or serum specifically formulated to target fine lines and crow's feet.Try Pevonia Age Correction Eye Contour. This power repair eye contour gives tired, ageing eyes the burst of hydration they need! Deeply nourishing thanks to its combination of marine collagen and marine elastin hyaluronic acid, it targets signs of fatigue, visibly reducing puffiness, fine lines and wrinkles. What more could you want?“Reduces wrinkles and firms eyelids. It’s also cool and soothing to eye area. No oily film to interfere with applying eye makeup. Have seen reduction in fine lines in crow’s feet area.” Laura L Exfoliate Shedding dead skin and revealing a younger, healthier layer of skin beneath helps reduce the appearance of crow's feet, fine lines, and surface wrinkles. Stronger forms of AHAs may also help boost your skin's collagen production, thereby providing additional crow's feet treatment. Get enough sleep. When you don't get enough sleep, your skin can become dull and wrinkled and wrinkles around your eyes can become increasingly more obvious. Aim for 7-8 hours of sleep minimum each night. Apply cucumbers over your eyes I’ve talked about this before and for good reason. Cucumber slices are known for their cooling and soothing properties. Place chilled cucumber slices over your eyes for 10-15 minutes to reduce puffiness and refresh the delicate skin around your eyes. Apply Green tea bags as an eye compress Green tea isn't just for drinking; it's also a potent antioxidant that can work wonders topically for your skin. Brew some green tea, let it cool, then soak a clean cloth in the tea and gently place it over your closed eyes for 15 minutes. The antioxidants in green tea can help reduce inflammation and promote smoother, firmer skin. Apply chamomile tea bags for soothing relief And finally as with green tea bags, chamomile tea bags can really help the eye area when applied topically. Chamomile is renowned for its calming and anti-inflammatory properties. Simply place two chamomile tea bags in hot water, let them cool, then place them over your closed eyes for 10-15 minutes. This can help reduce puffiness and inflammation, giving your eyes a refreshed and rejuvenated appearance. Manage stress Stress can also contribute to the formation of wrinkles. Find healthy ways to manage stress, such as exercise, yoga, or meditation. How do you prevent crow's feet from forming in the first place? There are several lifestyle choices you can make to help fight the formation of crow’s feet. Wear sunglasses The delicate skin around our eyes is particularly susceptible to UV damage as it is thinner and more prone to wrinkling. By wearing sunglasses daily, you create a shield against the sun's harmful UV rays, protecting this sensitive area from sun exposure and thereby reducing the risk of developing crow's feet.Wearing sunglasses can also help to reduce squinting, one of the main contributors to crow's feet. Apply sunscreen every. single. day Wearing sunglasses isn’t the only thing to help shield your delicate eye area from sun damage. Actually wearing sunscreen daily is imperative too!The sun is hands down the no. 1 cause of premature ageing and therefore crow’s feet, and by wearing sunscreen religiously you can help prevent it! Go gentle on the delicate eye area Treat your eye area with the utmost care. Avoid harsh rubbing or tugging as this can damage your delicate eye area causing the tissue around your eyes to thin, making it more fragile and therefore be more susceptible to wrinkles. Practice eye exercises Performing simple eye exercises such as gentle massage can help improve blood circulation and reduce tension around the eyes potentially minimizing wrinkle formation. Incorporate retinol into your daily skincare routine Incorporating a retinol-based eye cream into your skincare routine can work wonders for your skin. Retinol helps boost collagen production and encourages cell turnover, leading to firmer, more youthful-looking skin. Drink plenty of water every single day Say no more. Water is life. We all know drinking plenty of water has an outstanding effect onour skin's health, so drink, drink, drink! Apply eye masks Treat yourself to some nourishing eye masks infused with hydrating and collagen-boosting ingredients. These can provide an instant plumping and brightening effect, giving your under-eye area a refreshed appearance. Eat a healthy diet If you’re looking for a simple solution for how to prevent crow’s feet, try to eat more of the following foods. Fish rich in omega-3s essential fatty acids such as salmon Avocados Nuts and seeds Extra virgin olive oil Berries Green leafy vegetables Foods high in antioxidants can help fight free radicals and pollution that contribute to lines and wrinkles. Avoid smoking Smoking it’s just bad for your health, it can seriously affect your skin's appearance too! This is because smoking can accelerate the ageing process quite significantly and contribute to the formation of wrinkles. Get yourself some reading glasses as soon as you need them! As we age, our vision can become impaired which causes us to squint, especially when we are trying to read or scroll through at our devices. Squinting is actually one of the main causes of crow’s feet, eek, so if you notice your eye sight deteriorating slightly go get your eyes tested immediately.Just remember, while crow's feet are a natural part of the aging process, taking care of your skin and following these tips can help minimize their appearance and promote a more youthful, radiant eye area.

The best makeup tips for sensitive skin

by Jo Boyden on Oct 12 2023
If you suffer from sensitive skin, you’ll know that makeup can be somewhat of a challenge! After all you don’t want to spend your hard-earned dollars purchasing products that are only going to exacerbate your already compromised complexion!Unfortunately when it comes to sensitive skin, choosing the right makeup products for your skin’s specific needs, as well as adopting gentle preparation and application techniques, are imperative! To help guide you, below we reveal the top 9 makeup tips for sensitive skin sufferers and the best makeup products for you to try too! Products that will both help conceal and sooth your sensitive skin without any irritation. Sound good? Keep reading! Understand your skin Before you even consider your makeup, you need to really understand your skin. As well as being sensitive, is it dry? Oily? Combination perhaps? Do you have any specific skin conditions like rosacea or eczema? Are their certain ingredients that cause your skin to flair up? Understanding your skins unique needs will help you choose the right products. Check ingredients When selecting makeup products for sensitive skin, read labels carefully. You want to avoid highly fragranced products which are very likely to cause a negative reaction with sensitive skin. Also avoid, drying alcohols, witch hazel, citrus and products that contain a high % of essential oils. Another problem can be preservatives, particularly methylisothiazolinone and methylcholorisothiazoline which are often used to replace parabens, these are known sensitisers when used in leave on products.Instead look for terms like “fragrance-free” and “hypoallergenic”. This means that the makeup has been tested and proven to be less likely to cause irritation. Also check the label for ”non-comedogenic”. Non-comedogenic makeup is less likely to clog your pores, which can lead to breakouts.Mineral makeup will be your because bet, because its fragrance-free, hypoallergic and non-comedogenic and it tends to be packed with soothing, skin loving ingredients instead of ingredients that can cause irritation. Choose the right shade When it comes to choosing colours avoid products that are too yellow. Red skin and yellow makeup = orange complexion. Neutral shades are best for you and will help reduce the redness harmoniously. Patch test your products Before applying any new product to your face we recommend patch testing first to check for any allergic reactions or irritation. Either apply the product on an area like the back of your wrist or by apply a very small amount to your jawline. Make sure your skin is properly prepped Before diving into makeup, it’s imperative to start with a clean canvas. Use a gentle, sensitive skin cleanser to remove any impurities. Next, it’s time to moisturise. Sensitive skin can be on the dry side too, so it’s important to add nourishment. Opt for a moisturiser specifically designed to sooth and hydrate sensitive skin, this will lock in hydration and create a smooth base for the makeup to follow! We are loving Phytomer's Douceur Marine Soothing Moisturising Cream. It is beautifully silky in texture, soothing on the skin and visibly reduces skin redness. What’s more, its deeply hydrating without feeling greasy or heavy.Take only the size of a pea and pat the product into the skin to allow it to absorb slowly and naturally. You should also add a sunscreen with high SPF for a layer of added protection, this will help prevent sun damage and premature skin ageing like fines lines and wrinkles. We recommend: ELES Luminous Defence Brightening Day Protection 50 It’s time to prime All hail the makeup primer! This product will really be your best friend. A makeup primer will not only help create longer lasting makeup, but it will create a barrier between your skin and makeup reducing the risk of irritation too! Choose a gentle formula. We love ELES Retexturizing Face PrimerTo learn more about primers and just how good they are click here. Go light If you use foundation, go for a breathable, lightweight liquid formula. We love the best-selling ELES Liquid Powder Mineral Foundation. It's silky, mineral-enriched and provides skin with broad spectrum sun protection. It liquid formulated glides beautifully onto sensitive skin setting as a soft, powder finish, however it does not clog skin! Brilliant stuff.Another option is to look for multi-tasking products that treat, conceal and even tone in one. A tall ask? Not when it comes to CC Creams! These miracle formulas are colour correcting. So instead of applying a thick layer of opaque makeup to cover redness, the CC Cream’s Photonic Crystal Technology “offsets” redness, wrinkles and other skin imperfections, subtly illuminating the skin. This means less coverage is required, better for your sensitive skin! Try: ELES Luminous CC Cream 20, you’ll be so glad you did!To add colour or depth to your skin, you can incorporate a blush or bronzer too. You’re best to just choose mineral formulations once again, but make sure you choose powder over cream base. Cream-based products can sometimes clog pores or cause unnecessary irritation. Less is always more It's better to start with a light layer of makeup and build up coverage as needed than to apply too much makeup at once. Too much makeup can irritate sensitive skin and clog your pores. Remove your makeup at the end of the day. It's imperative to remove any makeup from your skin at the end of the day. Leaving impurities in the skin while you sleep will lead to more sensitivity! Allow your skin to perform its natural repair and regeneration at night by removing all your makeup and the day’s pollutants and you’ll wake up to a much calmer skin. While it may be tempting to coat your skin in rich and protective creams and oils, it’s better to drench it with lightweight moisture that will encourage better cell regeneration and protein rebuilding. We adore Phytomer's Night Recharge Youth Enhancing Cream. Perfectly silky and soothing it literally envelopes your skin in nourishment and comfort and helps boost your skin's renewal as you sleep so you’ll wake up to calmer, plumper skin by morning. Obsessed.

Stay hydrated When it comes to facial redness water is your best friend. Staying hydrated helps maintain your skin's natural moisture balance. It's like giving your skin a drink of water from the inside out. You’ll also want to up the anti when it comes to nourishing your skin topically. Make sure you moisturise twice a day and add a hydrating serum into your daily routine too.Try: Pevonia Hyaluronic Acid Hydra Serum. Featuring one of the highest concentrations of hyaluronic acid on the skincare market, its honestly like a burst of nourishment for the skin. And combined with a powerful duo of marine collagen and hibiscus esculentus extract it also provides optimum anti-ageing results. It penetrates deeply into the skin delivering smoother, calmer, softer, plumper, firmer and brighter skin! What’s more it’s ideal for all skin types! Wear mineral makeup WE totally understand that when you suffer from rosacea or skin redness you aren’t likely to forego makeup altogether. You do need to let your skin breath freely to reduce irritation though so its essential to opt for mineral makeup that will allow just this. Mineral makeup is non-comedogenic which means it won’t clog your pores.Try: ELES Mineral Powder Foundation. As a sufferer of want for a better word ‘flushed skin’ I personally LOVE the best-selling ELES Mineral Powder Foundation! It’s one of my all-time favourites. It’s one of the most natural-looking, if not THE most natural-looking foundations I have in fact ever tried and being in the industry for 20 years I’ve tried many! It contains zero chemical nasties, instead, it’s packed with skin loving ingredients including vitamins A & E, can be used as a buildable foundation from natural sheer to polished opaque (dependant on what you need) and it’s highly compatible with common skin sensitivities, working wonders at camouflaging facial redness while protecting skin against ultraviolet damage too!Another good option is to try a colour corrector which will help visually correct redness and even out skin tone at the same time. Using one with UV protection will also help shield your sensitive skin from exposure that can aggravate skin sensitivities.Try: ELES Luminous CC Cream SPF 20. It’s a game changer when it comes to colour correcting red skin! It’s a lightweight, oil-free, colour correcting cream with broad spectrum protection that really does multi-task like no other! And while it’s technically not a foundation, the full coverage pigments cover facial redness—be it from rosacea, pimples, irritation, you name it—so well that you very well may be able to get away without wearing any other makeup. Be sunscreen savvy Sunscreen isn't just for sunny days. UV rays can exacerbate redness and inflammation. Opt for a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30 and apply it religiously, even on cloudy days.Try: ELES Luminous Defence Brightening Day Protection SPF 50. We understand that so many sunscreens feel greasy, don’t smell great or simply don’t sit well on our skin, and then there are those thick white sunscreens that look like a paste when applied too, the last thing you want to be worried about when your skin is already a little on the sensitive side. That’s why we love ELES Luminous Defence. It’s not greasy but instead silky soft, the scent isn’t unpleasant, and it applies beautifully to my skin. And thanks to its formulation its helps nourish and restore skins luminosity too, not to mention it’s high SPF of 50. Wear a soothing mask If your skin redness is potentially caused by dryness or inflammation a natural face mask or sheet mask specifically formulated to cool and calm skin can work wonders.Try: ELES Calming and Soothing Sheet Mask. Incorporating natural botanicals it soothes and reduces inflammation. Like a cool balm, this calming mask reduces redness and heat and restores a protective barrier to prevent moisture loss. Manage your stress Easier said than done I know! Especially if you are juggling life, kids, work….but stress can be a big trigger for facial redness so its important to incorporate stress management techniques into your daily routine. Try meditation, yoga or simply taking time out for yourself to relax and unwind whether that’s going for walks, reading a book or simply having time out in from of the tv. I highly recommend the app Headspace for meditation. And for some soothing sounds try ambient relaxation music on Spotify. Bliss. Choose your skincare products wisely Check the ingredients list of the skincare products you purchase. You want to steer clear of products containing alcohol or fragrances which can exacerbate redness and instead opt for products specifically targeted for sensitive skin which include soothing ingredients such as aloe vera, chamomile, green tea or niacinamide. These can help cool and calm any inflammation as well as reduce your facial redness. Consider topical creams If you know that the redness on your skin is caused by rosacea, you can also look to certain skincare ranges to treat your symptoms.Try: Pevonia’s best-selling RS2 line. It can help soothe the skin as well as successfully elevating the symptoms. Revise your diet Underlying facial redness can actually be related to what you eat so making simple changes to your diet can make all the difference. We recommend an anti-inflammatory diet, which includes green leafy vegetables, fish, essential oils, and low-glycemic fruits. Try to give simple sugars, grains, non-organic meats, dairy, and high-glycemic fruits a miss..and avoid triggers such as spicy foods, citrus, tomato, chocolate, and cinnamon. Make lifestyle changes While facial redness can be a frustrating problem, the cause can often be more than skin deep. This means that the solution can require certain lifestyle changes in addition to the steps mentioned above. Try decreasing sun exposure, don’t go walking in the wind! If you smoke, don’t! Stop drinking all the hot drinks and make sure you drink cold water when ever you are exercising. Remember to be patient and consistent when managing facial redness and don't get discouraged if you don't see immediate results.
Beauty Collective - protect skin from skin pollution

How to protect your skin from pollution

by Jo Boyden on Sep 08 2023
We all know that the sun’s UV rays can wreak havoc on our skin, but are we all aware of how damaging pollution can be too? We’re talking everything from soot, dust or smoke to even smaller specs, which cannot be seen by the naked eye!If you’ve ever suffered from dull, devitalised skin, blotchiness and breakouts, discolouration, inflammation and premature ageing even, chances are it could be the result of pollution, and if you live in an urban area like me, there is sadly no escaping it! The good news however, is you can take many measures to protect your skin from it, keep reading as we reveal them all. Smart Cleansing I’m certain when I say we all cleanse our skin daily, but cleansing your skin properly (not aggressively) each night is an essential when it comes to protecting your skin from pollution. While pollutants can be like cell munching monsters that stick to the skin like velcro, a great cleanser, used gently will help remove them and still maintain your skin’s natural barrier. And the great news is there are cleansers that have been designed specifically to target pollution. They thoroughly remove dirt, grime, makeup, pollution and impurities, but do not strip the skin like harsher cleansers can.Consider a double cleansing routine too if your wear makeup everyday, starting with an oil-based cleanser followed by Phytomer Souffle Marin Cleansing Foaming Cream. Formulated with depolluting armeria maritima, an anti-pollution marine sugar and oligomer (seawater concentrate rich in minerals and trace elements), it cleanses, purifies, and invigorates the skin with a beautifully fresh, clean feeling. Effective exfoliation Just cleansing your face is likely not enough to remove all the polluting particles once they have entered your pores which is why you need a good exfoliating cleanser too! Cue award winning product Phytomer CITYLIFE Ultra Cleansing Flash Peel. This is the first of its kind, a pollution defence deep cleanser. Power packed with a high concentration of exfoliating enzymes, it leaves the skin healthy, purified, smooth, soft and with an incredible glow. Love. Skin barrier boost Your skin has its own protective barrier, but it could use some reinforcements. Look for an added boost of hydration and antioxidants like vitamin C, vitamin E and niacinamide, in the form of a serum or concentrate. These superheros fight off free radicals and help further repair skin damage caused by pollution.Try Phytomer Oligo 6 Marine Concentrate with Vitamins, Prebiotic Complex and Trace Elements which includes vitamins C, E, B and B3, Phytomer’s marine prebiotic complex and OLIGOMER®, to effectively help fight free radicals on the skins surface. This moisturising gel really is the perfect antidote for tired, dull complexions. You’ll love the way it rebalances, hydrates and boosts lacklustre skin (as well as protecting it of course!) Sun protection Never, ever underestimate the power of sunscreen! Sunscreen not only shields your skin from harmful UV rays but also acts as a protective barrier against pollution. Opt for a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher and wear it daily, even on cloudy days! Face Mask Treat yourself to a detoxifying face mask once or twice a week. Your skin will thank you for it! Clay masks, charcoal masks and masks with activated charcoal can help draw out impurities and pollutants from your pores. The face mask we can’t recommend more highly is Phytomer Radiance Reviving Mask with Clay. It combines 100% natural red and white clays, blue microalgae, red algae and a comprehensive depolluting complex of 3 marine sugars, and instantly unclogs pores and counters the effects of pollution (dehydration, signs of fatigue, dark spots and a dull complexion!) Want your skin to look less tired and to recover its original radiance? Try this! Hydrate, inside and out When we talk about skin and hydration we aren’t just talking about moisturising, it’s about maintaining your skins natural barrier. You want to protect your skin as best you can! Remember to drink water like it’s going out of fashion and apply your moisturiser religiously as it can help in lock that much needed moisture as well as create a protective layer on your skin. Better still look for a moisturiser specifically formulated to combat the effects of pollution. We love Phytomer Citylife Face and Eye Contour Sorbet Cream. With its Citysafe complex (a trio of anti-oxidant biotech marine sugars) and Oligomer, it literally sweeps away toxic micro-particles and repairs skin damage caused by pollution! Even better, its suitable for face and eyes, re-oxygenating tired, dull and dehydrated skin. And finally, don’t skip on an antioxidant-rich diet! Weve talked about antioxidants in your skincare, but a diet rich in antioxidants can also do wonders for your skin, especially if you’re living in an urban area. Be sure to load up on colourful fruits and veggies, and add nuts and fatty fish into the equation too. These are the best foods to provide your body with the tools it needs to fight free radicals and repair skin damage! So, the long and the short of it is pollution is bad, antioxidants are good and implementing these protective measures into your daily routine can help your skin stay healthy.
under eye crepiness

Top tips to improve under eye crepiness

by Jo Boyden on Sep 01 2023
If like me, you’re in your 40’s (or older), you may have fallen victim to under eye crepiness – that undesirable loose, wrinkled skin that can make you look tired, but also older than you actually are! This is because as we age the collagen and elastin levels in our skin starts to decline, as it does the delicate skin around our eyes (one of the first and most prevalent areas to show premature ageing) becomes dryer and thinner, and well crepey! Luckily all is not lost though! There are a number of steps you can take to improve its appearance, and we aren’t talking chemical peels, dermal fillers, laser and Botox, no siree, we are all about natural, non-intrusive alternatives. Keep reading as we reveal them all!Firstly though, why might you be more susceptible to under eye crepiness? The most common cause of fine lines, wrinkles and crepey skin under your eyes is unfortunately ageing, which can of course be influenced by genetics (thank you Mum and Dad!) But other common contributing factors which may be possible to avoid include;UV radiation – exposure to UV rays accelerates the breakdown of collagen leading to premature ageing, this is why it’s essential to protect our peepers! If you don’t wear sunnies every single day like you do your sunscreen, you should now!Smoking – smoking exposures your skin to extra oxidative stress, in turn damaging its collagen and elastin. Smoking also constricts the blood vessels under your eyes by blocking circulation to your blood vessels and depriving your skin of necessary vitamin A.Environmental factors - environmental factors, such as dry weather, wind, and pollution can all contribute to undereye ageing.Pulling repetitive expressions – well I’m definitely guilty of this! Facial expressions, like smiling, frowning, and furrowing your brow, can cause fine lines to develop prematurely around your delicate eye area. Eek!Even the way we sleep can have a negative impact on our eyes! What you might say? Yup, if you sleep with your face buried in your pillow (guilty as charged) you are likely to be more prone to premature fine lines, wrinkles and eye crepiness, than those that don’t! Aghhh. How can you improve undereye crepiness?Although crepey skin will not disappear overnight, it can be drastically improved with time, the right anti-aging products, as well as lifestyle changes. It can take weeks or even months to see results, but by following these top 10 tips you can bid adieu to that saggy, sullen, crepey skin under your eyes. Stay hydrated. All. The. Time. Yes, you’ve heard it a million times before, drink all the water. Hydration is key my friends. Make sure you are drinking enough water throughout the day (we’re talking 8 glasses minimum). When you drink water, it’s like giving your skin a drink from the inside out too (and that water has to nourish all your other vital organise too! Treat sunscreen like is your BFF Never underestimate the power of sunscreen. Those harmful UV rays are a major contributor to premature aging. So, slather on that sunscreen every morning, even on cloudy days. Your future self will thank you!Not a huge fan of sunscreen? We get it. Soo many sunscreens feel greasy, don’t smell great or simply don’t sit well on our skin, and then there are those thick white sunscreens that look like a paste when applied too! That’s why we love the ELES Luminous Defence Brightening Day Protection SPF 50. It’s not greasy but instead silky soft, the scent isn’t unpleasant, and it applies beautifully to my skin. And thanks to its formulation its helps nourish and restore skins luminosity too, not to mention it’s high SPF of 50! Invest in an eye cream rich in hyaluronic acid and use it day and night Investing in a good quality eye cream that's packed with hydrating and skin-loving ingredients including hyaluronic acid and peptides will do wonders for ageing eyes. Gently pat the product around your eyes morning and night for that extra boost of moisture and optimal results. For more on the benefits of using hyaluronic acid under your eyes and our 3 favourite eye treatments click here. Add a gemstone facial roller to your daily beauty routine The roller will, not only help reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles around the eyes, when used correctly, it can dramatically reduce puffiness by moving excess fluid around your eyes towards your lymph nodes where it filters out the toxins too. Cool right? To find out more about the facial rollers and how to use them click here. Introduce tea time for your eyes Tea isn’t just for drinking you know, it’s also good for soothing your eyes too! Try placing cold tea bags (caffeine free, herbal tea is best!) on your closed eyes for a few minutes. The tannins in tea can help tighten the skin and reduce puffiness too! Consider practicing eye massage Light massage with your ring finger can improve bloody circulation and actually help your skin appear smoother. Remember gentle, gentle though as applying too much pressure to already thin, delicate skin can have the adverse effect! Give your eyes a rest from screen time Increased time in front of your laptop and on your phone can reap havoc with your precious peepers. In fact, spending just two consecutive hours on a digital device can cause eyestrain or fatigue while overexposure to blue light also suppresses the release of melatonin, the hormone that regulates sleep, therefore disrupting our normal sleep pattern. And we all know poor sleep can lead to premature ageing, especially around the delicate eye area! Make healthy lifestyle choices Your overall health reflects on your skin, including the delicate eye area. Eat a balanced diet rich in antioxidants, vitamins, and omega-3 fatty acids. And if you're a smoker, consider kicking the habit – smoking accelerates skin aging like nobody's business. Using gentle cleansing is a must Be kind to your skin when you cleanse but also never skip on cleansing, it’s a must, just be sure to use a gentle, hydrating cleanser that doesn't strip away your skin's natural oils. Harsh cleansers can contribute to dryness and crepiness. Try Medicalia’s Gentle Cleanser. Introduce cold compress magic Incorporate cold compresses into your routine. Applying a cold, damp cloth or chilled spoons over your eyes for a few minutes can help reduce puffiness and refresh your skin. Keep skin hydrated Invest in a good hydrating mist. A quick spritz throughout the day can give your skin the moisture it craves, helping to minimize crepiness. We love Pevonia’s Hyaluronic Acid Hydra Mist. It’s one of my all time favourites. Make sure you get enough Zzzz’s Beauty sleep is real people! After all it’s not dubbed beauty sleep for nothing! Make sure you're getting enough restful sleep each night. Elevate your head slightly with an extra pillow to prevent fluid from pooling around your eyes, which can lead to puffiness and crepiness. Upgrade your pillow case If you are one for sleeping with your face in the pillow, you might want to consider switching up your cotton pillowcase to a silk or satin alternative instead.Silk has natural moisturising properties to retain moisture around the eyes. The dense weave of the silky-smooth fibres also keep moisture close to your skin, this extra moisture can help to reduce dark circles, fine lines and wrinkles.Just remember, Rome wasn’t built in day, and your under-eye skin won’t transform overnight either sadly (if only!) Be patient and be religious with these steps and you’ll be waking up to smoother, brighter and younger looking eyes soon!
