Using retinol? Here are the mistakes we see most often

by Jo Boyden on Jun 10 2026
Retinol has earned its reputation as one of the most powerful anti‑ageing ingredients in skincare. Dermatologists swear by it, beauty editors are constantly writing about it, and if you’re in your 30s, 40s or beyond, chances are someone has already told you that you need to be using it. So you bought your retinol serum, slathered it on, hoped for an overnight miracle… and woke up with dry, flaky, irritated skin that somehow made you look older, not younger! If this sounds familiar, don’t panic, and definitely don’t give up on retinol just yet! The problem usually isn’t the ingredient itself, but how you’ve used it. Retinol can deliver incredible results, but it's also one of the easiest skincare ingredients to get wrong. Over the years, we’ve seen countless customers give up on this powerhouse ingredient because they assumed it simply wasn’t right for their skin, when in reality they were making one (or several!) very common mistakes. The good news? They’re all easy to fix! If you’ve recently introduced retinol into your routine, or you’re thinking about giving it a try, here’s what you need to know, the 7 common retinol mistakes we see time and time again, and exactly how to avoid them.   The most common retinol mistakes (and how to avoid them) Mistake 1. Starting too strong, too soon This is one of the biggest mistakes we see is people jumping straight into a high-strength retinol and using it every night. Retinol is an ingredient that works best when introduced gradually. Starting slowly gives your skin time to adapt and can help minimise irritation, redness and flaking. What to do instead: Start with a gentle formula like Pevonia’s Micro Retinol range and use it two to three nights per week before gradually increasing frequency. Pevonia’s Micro Retinol range is a great, safe, and side-effect free alternative to using prescription Retinoic Acid. What’s more, every product in the Micro-Retinol® line contains a powerhouse trio of vitamin C, Vitamin E, and Micro-Retinol®! The addition of vitamin C and E not only ensures Micro-Retinol®’s stability, but also that the skin’s nutrients and density are renewed and preserved!   Mistake 2: Applying retinol to wet skin This is a sneaky mistake that almost everyone makes! When your skin is wet or even damp, it acts like a sponge, absorbing products much faster and deeper than usual. While this is amazing for hyaluronic acid, it can be the opposite for retinol! As the quick, deep absorption can greatly increases the risk of dryness, peeling, redness, and irritation. What to do instead: After cleansing your face at night, pat it thoroughly dry with a towel. Then, wait 5 to 10 minutes before applying your retinol. Ensuring your skin is completely dry slows down the absorption rate, giving you all the anti-ageing benefits without the angry side effects.   Mistake 3. Using more product than you need When it comes to retinol, more isn't better. Applying a thick layer won't deliver faster results and may simply increase the likelihood of irritation. What to do instead: A pea-sized amount is usually enough for the entire face.   Mistake 4. Forgetting moisturiser Many people assume retinol should be applied on its own in a serum form and left to work its magic. Unfortunately, this can leave skin feeling dry, tight and uncomfortable. What to do instead: Follow your retinol serum with a retinol moisturiser, or another nourishing moisturiser to help support your skin barrier and maintain hydration.   Mistake 5. Skipping SPF This is arguably the most important mistake on the list! Retinol can increase your skin's sensitivity to the sun. Using retinol at night but neglecting SPF during the day can undermine your results and increase the risk of sun damage. What to do instead: Wear a broad-spectrum SPF every single morning, regardless of the weather (you should be anyway if your aim is to prevent premature ageing!)   Mistake 6. Mixing too many active ingredients Retinol doesn't always play nicely with every ingredient in your skincare cabinet! Using strong exfoliating acids (like glycolic & salicylic acids), retinol and other potent actives (like vitamin C, Benzoyl Peroxide) all at once can leave skin irritated and overwhelmed. What to do instead: Keep your routine simple and introduce new active ingredients gradually. You can still use these ingredients in your overall skincare routine just never on the same morning or night. For best results use your retinol at night and vitamin C in the morning. And the days you use your exfoliating acids, have a rest from retinol.  The ingredients that do pair perfectly with retinol include hyaluronic acid, ceramides and niacinamide.   Mistake 7. Expecting instant results We live in a world of overnight shipping and instant gratification, but retinol doesn't work that way! Visible improvements in skin texture, tone and fine lines can take weeks or even months to appear but it will! You just need to be patient. What to do instead: Consistency is key. Stick with your routine and give your skin time to respond. The results are worth waiting for! To learn more about retinol. What it does, what other skincare ingredients it works best with (and which to avoid) and the many benefits, click here.   Retinol remains one of the most researched and effective ingredients in skincare, but success comes down to how you use it. Remember to start slowly, support your skin barrier, wear SPF daily and be patient with the process, then reap the rewards! When used correctly, retinol can become one of the hardest-working products in your skincare routine, helping to improve the appearance of fine lines, uneven skin tone and overall skin texture over time.

Hormonal acne explained: Causes, tips and the best skincare

by Jo Boyden on May 22 2026
There’s nothing quite as frustrating as waking up, looking in the mirror, and seeing a blemish that has literally appeared out of nowhere overnight! Especially when you thought your breakout days were left behind in your teenage years! The thing is hormonal acne doesn’t just affect teenagers, it’s incredibly common in adulthood too, particularly in our late 30s, 40s and beyond. The tricky part is that hormonal acne is very different from a standard breakout, and because it can be so stubborn, it needs a more thoughtful approach than simply trying to “dry it out”. Instead, the key is to support the skin with gentle, targeted care that helps calm inflammation, protect the skin barrier and keep breakouts under control. Keep reading as we share the best professional skincare tips, ingredients, and expert-approved products to help keep stubborn hormonal breakouts at bay and your skin looking healthier, calmer, and more balanced!   How do you know it’s hormonal acne? Hormonal breakouts are often linked to changes in hormones that can affect oil production and inflammation in the skin. It commonly shows up as deep, tender spots, recurring breakouts or congestion that tends to cluster along the chin, jawline and lower cheeks, and occasionally the neck. This is distinctly different from congestion related acne which tends to appear across the T-zone (forehead, nose and chin.)  For many people, hormonal acne flares a week or so before a period, due to hormonal shifts. As oestrogen (the “female” hormone) levels drop, androgens (“male” hormones) have a relatively stronger effect on the skin often increasing oil production and congestion, which can lead to your skin breaking out. Hormonal acne also flares during other hormonal shifts such as stress, pregnancy, perimenopause and menopause!   The best skincare ingredients for hormonal acne The goal with hormonal acne is to keep the skin barrier strong and supported, target active breakouts and calm the inflammation that drives the redness and pain. Some of the most effective ingredients include: Salicylic & lactic acids to help clear pores and reduce congestion. Niacinamide to calm redness and balance oil Clay & charcoal to detoxify pores and absorb excess oil Hyaluronic acid for lightweight hydration Vitamin A and retinol alternatives to support skin renewal Soothing botanicals to reduce irritation   The best routine for hormonal acne Because hormonal acne tends to be deeper and more persistent than the occasional blemish, it often responds best to a routine that is both targeted and gentle. A simple routine is often the best place to start when treating hormonal acne. One of the biggest mistakes people make is over-cleansing or using harsh products that leave the skin feeling tight and dry. When the skin barrier becomes compromised, it can trigger even more oil production and irritation! Instead, it’s best to choose professional skincare that deeply cleanses without stripping the skin and focus on maintaining hydration and balance. Remember also that consistency is key, hormonal acne rarely improves overnight, but gentle, targeted skincare can help visibly improve the skin over time.   1. Choose a gentle, purifying cleanser You want to opt for a cleanser that removes excess oil, sunscreen and impurities while clearing out dead skin cells without stripping your skin and leaving your face feeling tight or dry. Remember over-cleansing can irritate the barrier and make breakouts feel worse. Our recommendation: Medicalia Clarifying Cleanser Specifically created for those with breakout prone and sensitive/oily skin, it’s formulated with both Salicylic and Lactic acids to gently but effectively unclog pores and soften skin while improving clarity! Its potent foaming suds work very quickly to eliminate surface bacteria, toxins, impurities and makeup while combatting inflammation too! “I’ve been using this cleanser for a year now. Keeps my sebaceous filaments in check and has helped control my hormonal acne better than any other cleanser I’ve used.” – Sophie H 2. Use targeted treatments that balance oil production This is where actives can be helpful. Specific ingredients can support clearer-looking skin while helping to calm inflammation. To tackle the stubborn hormonal acne you’re experiencing, look for a targeted serum that helps balance excess oil production, calm redness and irritation, and support the skin’s natural healing process without over-drying the skin. Our recommendation: Pevonia Soothing Propolis Concentrate This is one of BC’s best-selling serums and it’s a particular favourite for hormonal breakouts because of its extraordinary natural antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. Propolis is a resinous compound produced by bees that has been used medicinally for thousands of years and in skincare, it’s one of the most effective naturally derived antibacterial actives available. Applied to the skin, Propolis helps reduce the bacteria that colonise clogged pores and contribute to inflammatory breakouts. It calms redness and swelling around active spots, speeds up the skin’s healing process and helps prevent new breakouts from forming! Amazing right? And unlike harsh antiseptic actives, it does all of this without disrupting the skin barrier or causing dryness! Now you can see why it’s a Pevonia favourite. What makes it particularly useful for hormonal acne though is that it can be used as a preventative applied consistently during the week or two before your period when you know breakouts are likely, it helps minimise the severity of what appears and speeds up recovery when blemishes do develop. “I love this product, i bought it while i was pregnant and had severe hormonal acne and it seemed to calm and soothe my skin and reduced the "angriness" of my skin!” – Melinda I 4. Support skin healing & hydration It’s a myth that oily and acne prone skin doesn’t need nourishment! A common mistake people with acne make is skipping moisturiser because your skin feels oily. By doing so your skin will become dehydrated, go into panic mode and actually product more oil to compensate! You just need an oil-free, healing moisturiser. Our Recommendation: Medicalia Clarifying Cream This lightweight, fast absorbing clarifying moisturiser is ideal for hormonal acne-prone skin because it delivers hydration without feeling heavy, greasy, or pore-clogging. Formulated with salicylic and glycolic acids it helps calm congestion, rebalance excess oil, and support the skin barrier. It also works to keep skin feeling hydrated, soothed, and healthier-looking while helping reduce the appearance of redness and breakouts. What makes it especially great for hormonal acne is that it helps nourish and comfort stressed, inflamed skin without overloading it (something many richer creams can do!) The result? Skin feels more balanced, less irritated, and better supported overall, with a clearer, calmer-looking complexion over time. “it's expensive but it's been a lifesaver for my acne prone skin! I've noticed it helps keep my sebaceous filaments in check also.” – Sophie H 5. At night, use a “cell turnover” treatment Because hormonal acne is often linked to congestion, excess oil, and trapped dead skin cells, encouraging your skin to renew itself more effectively is essential. Overnight treatments that support healthy cell turnover can help keep pores clearer, improve skin texture, and reduce the appearance of persistent breakouts over time. Our recommendation: Medicalia Retinol & 'C' Care Retinol is considered the gold standard for acne-prone skin because it helps speed up cell turnover, keeping pores clearer and reducing congestion. Combined with Hyaluronic Acid, Ceramides and Vitamin C, it also helps to brighten the skin and fade the lingering red or brown post-breakout marks that blemishes often leave behind. 6. Don’t forget SPF Daily sun protection is essential, especially if you are using active ingredients that may make your skin more sensitive. A good SPF helps protect your skin while you work on improving its overall condition. Our recommendation: Hubislab Herb 8 Soothing Blemish Balm SPF30 PA++ - 50g Formulated with Zinc Oxide, SPF30 broad-spectrum filters, and Hubislab’s signature Anti Toxin Herb 8 complex, this soothing sunscreen designed for sensitive skin works to alleviate irritation, calm redness, support skin recovery, and strengthen the skin barrier! It’s your SPF and skin treatment in one! 7. Once a week apply a mask Adding a weekly mask into your skincare routine can make a huge difference when it comes to managing hormonal breakouts. Masks help give the skin a deeper clean while targeting excess oil, congestion, and inflammation, all without needing to overload your skin with harsh daily treatments! Use a detoxifying or clarifying mask to help absorb excess oil, decongest pores, and calm inflammation, especially in the lead-up to your period when hormonal breakouts often flare. Our recommendation: Pevonia Pure Skin Charcoal Mask This purifying charcoal and clay mask is ideal for oily, congested, and breakout-prone skin. It helps draw out impurities, absorb excess oil, and leave the skin feeling clearer, smoother, and more balanced without stripping away essential moisture. It’s the perfect weekly reset for skin that feels congested, inflamed, or prone to stubborn hormonal breakouts. “Being in my 50's I wasn't sure if this would dry my skin out, but I bought it coz I had a few breakouts - hormonal I guess. I've used it daily for about 3 days and it's totally cleared my skin up - it feels de-congested, clear and smooth. I love this mask.” – Melinda Hopkins The lifestyle habits that can actually make a difference too Skincare can manage the symptoms of hormonal acne beautifully but if you want to address the root cause as well, these lifestyle factors are worth taking seriously: Avoid picking or squeezing breakouts Because hormonal blemishes are deep, picking or squeezing them (even though tempting) won't bring them to a head. Picking often leads to more inflammation and can increase the risk of marks or scarring. Track your cycle If you notice your skin flares up a week before your period, you can adjust your skincare a few days early to include more purifying, anti-inflammatory ingredients as a preventative step. Reduce your dairy and sugar intake While diet doesn't cause acne, high-sugar foods and dairy can cause spikes in insulin and inflammation, which can worsen hormonal flares. Reducing high-glycaemic foods is actually one of the most evidence-backed dietary changes for hormonal acne. Swapping refined carbohydrates and sugars for whole grains, vegetables and protein helps stabilise blood sugar and reduce androgen activity. Focus on stress management Stress is actually one of the biggest contributors to hormonal breakouts! This is because stress releases a hormone called cortisol, which directly tells your skin to produce more oil leading to inflammation and flare ups! Believe me we know saying manage your stress is easier said than done! But something as simple as medication, listening to music, breathing mindfully and exercising (even if it’s a walk) can help regulate cortisol levels. Also never underestimate the power of a calming self-care ritual! And a good night's sleep (7 to 9 hours nine hours is not a luxury for acne-prone skin, it’s part of the treatment!) Consider spearmint tea There is actually meaningful clinical evidence that spearmint tea has mild anti-androgenic properties. Two cups a day has been shown in small studies to reduce hormonal acne. It’s not a miracle cure but it’s a pleasant, zero-risk addition to a management approach. Talk to your GP or dermatologist If your hormonal acne is severe, cystic or significantly affecting your quality of life, please seek professional medical advice. There are effective medical interventions available, from oral contraceptives to spironolactone, that work alongside good skincare.   Hormonal acne can take time to improve, so consistency is essential. Rather than attacking the skin with aggressive products, focus on supporting and strengthening the skin barrier while using targeted ingredients that help reduce congestion and inflammation over time. With the right skincare routine, professional advice, and healthy lifestyle habits, hormonal acne can absolutely become more manageable.

The best pore-refining products according to you

The best pore-refining products according to you

by Jo Boyden on Apr 02 2026
We’ve talked a lot recently about the best products for sensitive skin, how to calm rosacea and how to strengthen a compromised skin barrier. Well now it’s time to talk pores! After all we all have them (even those people we swear have the most ‘perfect’ skin!) But when pores appear enlarged, congested or simply more visible that we’d like, they can really affect how smooth and refined our complexion looks. The truth is, we can’t actually physically ‘shrink’ our pores, but we can cleverly minimise their appearance with the right products! From clarifying cleansers to targeted serums, pore-refining formulas are designed to help keep skin looking clearer, smoother and more balanced. Keep reading to discover the 4 pore-refining products that consistently deliver visible results, according to you!   Firstly, why do your pores look enlarged in the first place? Pore size is largely genetic, so you definitely can’t shrink them permanently,  but you absolutely can minimise their appearance, and consistently so. The main culprits behind enlarged looking pores are excess sebum (oil) production, congestion and dead skin cell build-up sitting inside the pore. Loss of collagen and elasticity around the pore walls as skin ages is a big contributor too, as is sun damage. Targeting these at the right step in your routine (cleansing, treating, and refining) is the key to seeing real consistent results!   The pore-refining products you (and we!) love   Medicalia Clarifying Cleanser Using a good cleanser when pores are clogged with oil, makeup and debris is key to refining their appearance and this clarifying cleanser is a stand out for oily and congested skin! It works to deeply cleanse and purify the skin without over-stripping, helping to regulate excess oil while keeping the complexion balanced. With consistent use, pores appear clearer and less visible, and skin looks noticeably brighter and more refined overall too! “I have very oily skin and this product has helped so much. My pores are not just visibly smaller but almost un-noticable. I have had comments on how bright my skin looks lately so this tells me im on a winner!” - Lauri B Pevonia Gentle Exfoliating Cleanser If your skin tends to be sensitive but you still want that smooth, refined finish, this cleanser is a fantastic option. It gently exfoliates while cleansing, helping to remove buildup and refine the look of pores without causing irritation. Skin is left feeling soft, smooth, and perfectly balanced, never tight or irritated. “I have some sensitivity in my skin and this is the only product that I have used that does not hurt or inflame my skin. It has also made my skin so soft and minimized my pore size...AWESOME” - Tessa M Pevonia Age-Correction Micro-Pores Bio-Active Serum Once your skin is properly cleansed, targeted serums are where the real transformation happens and the Pevonia Age Correction Micro Pores Bio Active Serum is one that realy does exactly what it promises! Designed specifically to minimise the appearance of enlarged pores, it works by helping to regulate oil production while refining and smoothing the skin’s surface. It’s lightweight, effective, and perfect for areas where pores tend to be more visible (think nose, cheeks, and T-zone). “Wonderful product, does exactly what it says. Minimises large pores and reduces oily skin around my nose and cheeks. Highly recommend!”- Rhiannon K Phytomer Emergence Even Skin Tone Refining Serum If uneven texture and post-acne scarring are part of your concern, this serum is a must! It works to smooth, refine, and improve overall skin texture while helping to create a more even, polished-looking complexion. Over time, pores appear less noticeable as the skin becomes smoother and more uniform.  Honestly this is the kind of product that can earn a permanent spot in your routine when you start seeing visible improvements in your skin texture and clarity. “I first received this as a sample and decided to purchase it because I saw a huge difference in the texture of my skin. I now use it daily and would not be without it. I am in my 30s and have large pores with acne scaring. This product makes my skin so much smoother and beautiful.” – June Expert tips for minimising the look of your enlarged pores Remember to also keep skin clean so this means daily cleansing morning and night. A build up of oil and debris in your pores makes them look so much larger! Even if your skin is sensitive, exfoliating is a must to keep texture smooth and pores minimized. Never skip on your daily moisturiser, dehydrated skin can actually exaggerate your pores. Be consistent with your pore refining routine and never skip on your SPF!   When it comes to your pores, it’s not about trying to eliminate then which is impossible! It’s about keeping them clean, clear and refined! With the right combination of cleansing products and targeted treatments you will notice a big improvement in skin texture and the appearance of your pore size!

For anyone working from home or spending hours on devices (so, everyone), this has become the non-negotiable daily SPF. What does Vitamin C do for the skin? 6 benefits

What does Vitamin C do for the skin? 6 benefits

by Jo Boyden on May 16 2025
We’ve all heard of Vitamin C, after all this powerhouse antioxidant is one of the most researched and recommended ingredients in the world. But aside from boosting your body’s immunity, what is it that Vitamin C can do for your skin? Keep reading as we discuss the many benefits of vitamin C, the best vitamin C skincare, and why this potent ingredient should feature as a daily staple in your skincare routine!   What is Vitamin C? Vitamin C, or ascorbic acid as it’s otherwise known, is a potent antioxidant essential for maintaining overall health. It plays a vital role in immune support, collagen production and skin protection. Found in fruits and vegetables like citrus fruits, berries, capsicums, leafy greens and tomatoes, Vitamin C helps the body fight free radicals (the unstable molecules caused by environmental stressors like pollution, UV rays, and toxins) which can cause damage to cells and accelerate ageing! Since our bodies don’t produce Vitamin C naturally, it’s important to get enough through diet, supplements or beauty products. Whether in food, skincare, or daily vitamins, it’s a key ingredient for maintaining a healthy body and radiant skin!   Why chose Vitamin C skincare? When it comes to skincare Vitamin C can literally transform your complexion! This multi-tasking superstar is used for its ability to brighten skin, reduce pigmentation, and protect against environmental damage like pollution and UV exposure. It also aids in boosting collagen production, making it a go-to ingredient for improving skin elasticity and reducing fine lines. Whether you’re looking to fade dark spots, even out skin tone, or prevent premature ageing, Vitamin C works to strengthen and revitalize your skin at a cellular level. By applying Vitamin C topically, you create a protective barrier that helps neutralize oxidative stress, keeping your skin looking fresher and healthier.   The key benefits of Vitamin C for your skin 1. Brightens and evens skin tone Vitamin C is famous for its ability to fade dark spots and hyperpigmentation. It inhibits melanin production, helping to reduce discoloration and leaving you with a more even, glowing complexion. 2. Boosts collagen production Collagen is the structural protein that keeps skin firm and youthful. As we age, collagen levels naturally decline, leading to fine lines and wrinkles. Vitamin C helps stimulate collagen synthesis, improving skin elasticity and reducing signs of ageing. 3. Protects against sun damage While Vitamin C isn’t a replacement for sunscreen, it enhances UV protection by reducing oxidative stress caused by sun exposure. When paired with SPF, it helps keep your skin shielded from premature aging and damage. 4. Hydrates and repairs the skin barrier Many Vitamin C serums contain additional hydrating ingredients like hyaluronic acid, which locks in moisture and strengthens the skin barrier, preventing dehydration and irritation. 5. Fights inflammation and redness If you struggle with acne-prone or sensitive skin, Vitamin C can help calm inflammation and reduce redness by neutralizing free radicals that contribute to irritation. 6. It fights free radicals This powerful antioxidant neutralises unstable molecules caused by environmental stressors like UV rays and pollution, helping to protect skin cells, prevent premature ageing, and support overall skin health.   The best vitamin C skincare as recommended by the experts Phytomer Cyfolia Organic Radiance Cleansing Cream Packed with skin-loving ingredients like Cyfolia algae, organic orange water (a natural source of Vitamin C), aloe vera, and revitalising seawater, this velvety-soft cleanser melts into your skin to gently whisk away makeup, oil, and grime, no harsh rubbing needed! After each cleanse, your skin feels fresh, soft, and lit-from-within! Oh, and the scent? A gorgeous, uplifting blend of rose, cedarwood, and a hint of spiced pink peppercorn. Pevonia C Complexe with Oxyzomes This global best-selling vitamin C serum is packed with powerful antioxidants to brighten dull skin, even out tone, and fight off signs of ageing. Unfortunately, acne isn’t just a teenage problem like many of us may have once thought! It can be frustrating reality for adults too. Whether it's caused by hormones, stress, diet, or environmental factors, adult acne can be stubborn and challenging to treat. But if you’re currently dealing with this skin condition and looking for solutions that work, we are here to tell you they do exist! Whether you're dealing with persistent pimples, hormonal flare-ups, or the occasional breakout, keep reading for the most effective, tried-and-tested treatments for clear, calm skin!   Understanding adult acne – why you’re prone to it Before we discuss the best treatments, it's crucial to understand the reasons for adult acne. These are the main contributors; Hormonal Fluctuations Like in your teens, hormonal fluctuations are a major culprit when it comes to acne in adulthood! Especially in women due to menstrual cycles, pregnancy, perimenopause, and hormonal imbalances. Hormones can cause havoc with our skin by increasing oil production, clogging pores, and triggering inflammation leading to breakouts, especially around the jawline and chin. Stress Unfortunately, our busy lives can lead to increased stress levels. Stress in turn triggers hormonal changes, particularly cortisol spikes, which increase oil production, inflammation, and breakouts making adult acne more frequent and stubborn. Skincare Habits Using the wrong products, over-exfoliating, or not cleansing properly can contribute to breakouts. Diet While not a direct cause for everyone, certain foods can exacerbate acne in some people. High-glycaemic foods such as dairy, and processed items can spike insulin, triggering excess oil and breakouts. Environmental pollution Dirt and toxins on our skin from pollution can further contribute to the problem. It clogs pores causing inflammation and breakouts. Antioxidant-rich foods like berries, leafy greens, and nuts help defend skin.   What type of acne do you suffer from? Acne comes in many forms! To find out all about the most common ones and which you might be struggling with click here.   Key ingredients that work to fight acne Certain powerhouse ingredients have been clinically proven to combat acne, these include; Salicylic Acid This oil-soluble beta-hydroxy acid (BHA) can penetrate pores to exfoliate inside and out, helping to unclog them and reduce inflammation preventing further breakouts. Retinol This vitamin A derivative is highly effective at increasing cell turnover, preventing clogged pores, and reducing inflammation. Azelaic Acid This gentle yet effective acid can help reduce redness, inflammation, and hyperpigmentation associated with acne. It also has antibacterial properties. Be consistent and patient: Just remember clear skin isn’t an overnight achievement. Stick with a consistent, gentle routine and give your skin the time it needs to heal. Listen to your skin: Pay attention to how your skin reacts to different products and adjust your routine accordingly. Avoid product-hopping though and always patch-test new treatments first. Manage stress: Since stress aggravates acne, practices like meditation, exercise, and better sleep can make a difference. Maintain a healthy diet and stay hydrated: Cutting back on sugar and dairy may help some people minimize breakouts. Staying hydrated flushes toxins and supports skin health. Manage hygiene: Regularly washing pillowcases, makeup brushes, and phones prevents bacteria buildup on your skin.   Looking for makeup tips for your acne prone skin? Click here.
Your guide to preventative ageing: How to maintain youthful skin

Your guide to preventative ageing: How to maintain youthful skin

by Jo Boyden on Feb 14 2025
We all know ageing is inevitable, but looking older before our time? That is something we can prevent! Premature ageing (we’re talking fine lines, wrinkles, loss of firmness and more) is often the result of environmental damage, bad habits and how well we care for our skin! But by making the right choices now, you can keep your skin smooth, firm and glowing for years to come, really! From powerhouse ingredients to smart daily habits, keep reading for our expert tips on how to maintain youthful skin for as long as possible! So why start worrying about your skin before it shows signs of ageing? Our skin naturally produces collagen and elastin, the two proteins responsible for keeping it plump and firm. But from our mid-20s onwards, collagen production starts to decline leading to loss of firmness, fine, lines and wrinkles. Cell turnover also starts to decrease causing dullness and uneven skin texture. To make matters worse, external aggressors such as UV exposure, pollution and oxidative stress (as well as certain lifestyle choices!) accelerate these processes by breaking down collagen and triggering inflammation. The good news is with the right skincare and lifestyle choices you can actually slow down the paging process and prevent it happening prematurely!   The non-negotiables of preventative ageing 1. SPF: Your no.1 anti-ageing essential! If you only do one thing for preventative ageing, let it be wearing sunscreen every single day, come rain, hail or shine! And yes, even when it’s cloudy too! 90% of visible ageing is actually caused by sun exposure!! Crazy right? UV rays break down collagen and elastin, leading to premature wrinkles, sunspots, and sagging skin. Just be sure to use a broad spectrum SPF 30 + and reapply every few hours if you are spending the day outdoors. And remember slather on your neck, decolletage and the often forgotten area – your hands, as these are the areas that show ageing first! Many people can’t stand the smell or consistency of sunscreen (we hear you!) or worry about what is the best option for their sensitive skin, well not all sunscreens are the same! For more on the benefit of SPF, the best sunscreens and choosing the right one for your skin click here. 2. Hydration = plump, youthful skin! Dry, dehydrated skin makes fine lines more noticeable, so you want to ensure you are hydrating your skin both inside and out daily! Make sure you try to drive your 6-8 glasses of water a day, use a hyaluronic acid serum (this will lock in moisture!) and layer your skin with a ceramide-rich moisturiser in the mornings to help strengthen your skin barrier. Honestly hydration is the key to skin looking pump and dewy! 3. Retinol - the gold standard for ageing prevention Retinol (a form of Vitamin A) really is the no. 1 ingredient when it comes to preventing premature ageing. It’s every beauty expert’s holy grail! It works by increasing cell turnover, boosting collagen and in turn keeping skin firmer, more youthful and even toned!   The thing with retinol though is it can be harsh if used incorrectly. Plus finding the right product can be imperative especially if your skin is sensitive. Just be sure to start with a low concentration, opt for encapsulated retinol as it slowly releases into the skin, reducing irritation, apply a pea-sized amount just 1-2 times a week at first and if your skin tolerates it slowly increase frequency, use it at night because it makes skin more sun sensitive and finally always follow with a moisturiser as this will help to prevent any irritation. For all you need to know about retinol click here. 4. Antioxidants – your skin’s best defence Think of antioxidants as your skin’s shield against damage from pollution, UV rays and stress. They help neutralise free radicals which break down collagen and speed up ageing! You can eat an antioxidant rich diet but also applying antioxidant ingredients directly to your skin can be game-changing. Ingredients including; Vitamin C which brightens skin and boosts collagen, Niacinamide which strengthens the skin barrier and reduces inflammation and Vitamin E which hydrates and protects against environmental damage. 5. A Strong skin barrier = slower ageing  There are many factors that can lead to our skin barrier being damaged. From excessive sun exposure and extreme weather conditions to harsh skincare and over exfoliation! And when our skin barrier is damaged, it can lead to sensitivity, redness and faster ageing. To counteract this, it’s important to look for certain ingredients when it comes to your skincare. Ingredients like ceramides, peptides and fatty acids will help your skin to stay strong and resilient! 6. Gentle Exfoliation for a radiant glow Exfoliation is another skin necessity.  This is because exfoliation removes dead skin cells, enabling new ones to come through and in turn helping skin look brighter, smoother, and more youthful. But using the wrong exfoliator for your skin type or simply overdoing it can damage the skin barrier, leading to irritation and sensitivity. Eek! So be sure you use gentle exfoliants if your skin tends to be on the more sensitive side (formulated with ingredients like lactic acid or fruit enzymes), exfoliate 2-3 times a week max (not daily!) and always follow with hydration to keep your skin balanced. 7. Don’t forget your eyes and lips! Our delicate eye area is the first place to show ageing because the skin is thinner and more delicate. Fine lines, puffiness, and dark circles can make you look older than you feel so make sure you introduce a good eye and lip cream into your daily skincare routine and be gentle with your application! 8. Prioritize your beauty sleep! Your skin repairs itself while you sleep, producing collagen and elastin to keep it firm and youthful. Poor sleep, or lack of! Leads to dullness, puffiness, and accelerated ageing so try to aim for 7–9 hours of quality sleep every night (this can be difficult we know!!) and sleeping on a silk pillowcase can really help reduce friction and prevent sleep lines. 9. A skin-boosting diet What you eat really can show on your skin! A diet rich in antioxidants, healthy fats, and hydration will help skin stay radiant and youthful. We are talking berries, leafy greens, nuts, and fatty fish! Just be sure you avoid excess sugar and processed foods as scarily they break down collagen! 10. Reduce Stress as it shows on your skin! It’s easy to say don’t stress but we all stress! I usually do daily with all that I have going on! But chronic stress unfortunately increases cortisol levels, which can break down collagen and cause wrinkles, dullness, and breakouts. So finding ways to relax can really benefit your mind, body and skin! You can try practicing meditation, yoga, or deep breathing, even taking some time out to practice self-care can make all the difference. I personally love to have a relaxing bubble bath once or twice a week (when my kids allow it!) and listening to music can help take me to my happy place! When you work out what help you unwind, try and do it daily!   When to start preventative skincare? It’s never too early to start! Most dermatologists recommend incorporating antioxidants and SPF in your 20s and retinol and peptides in your late 20s to early 30s. But no matter your age, it’s always the right time to protect and nourish your skin. Just remember though, the sooner you start protecting, hydrating, and nourishing your skin, the more youthful and radiant it will look in the years ahead.
Menopause and your skin: The effects and the best solutions

Menopause and your skin: The effects and the best solutions

by Jo Boyden on Oct 11 2024
If you’re perimenopausal (or perhaps you’ve already reached the menopause), you’ll likely feeling it’s effects. Your body is going through changes, your hormones are out of sync and your skincare routine that once worked wonders is now having little to no effect! But why is this you may be thinking? We all know Menopause is a natural part of ageing, but some of the changes it brings can be somewhat of a surprise – especially when it comes to our skin! From unexpected dryness to deep set wrinkles, keep reading as we discuss exactly how the menopause affects our skin and the best solutions to care for it.   So what exactly happens to your skin during perimenopause and menopause? During perimenopause and menopause, your skin starts to undergo noticeable changes due to hormonal fluctuations, particularly the decline in estrogen levels.   Common Skin Concerns During Menopause Wrinkles and sagging skin Estrogen stimulates collagen production, which keeps skin firm and plump. As estrogen levels drop during perimenopause, collagen production starts to dramatically decrease, leading to thinning skin, sagging, and more pronounced, deeper wrinkles especially around the mouth, eyes and neck! Reduced elasticity Along with collagen loss, elastin fibers—responsible for skin's elasticity—also break down, resulting in looser, less resilient skin. Increased dryness Estrogen also helps regulate the skin’s moisture levels by boosting natural oil production. As this decreases, your skin may become drier, rougher, tighter and more prone to irritation. It may also become more sensitive to products that once felt fine. Thinning skin As estrogen levels drop, and therefore with less collagen and moisture the skin’s protective barrier weakens, causing it to thin and making it more fragile and prone to bruising, sensitivity, and damage. Age spots Hormonal changes combined with years of sun exposure can exacerbate pigmentation issues resulting in the appearance of more age spots or dark patches, particularly on the face, hands, and chest. Slower cell turnover The rate at which your skin regenerates, slows down, leading to a dull, uneven complexion and a buildup of dead skin cells. These changes can affect your overall skin texture and appearance, but the right skincare routine can help manage and improve these concerns. Blemishes Pimples and breakouts are surprisingly common as you approach the menopause transition. And if you had a history of acne as a teenager, you’ll more susceptible to getting acne flare ups around the menopause too! This typically happens due to fluctuations in hormone levels. As estrogen levels decrease, the effects of male sex hormones called androgens increase. Androgens increase the production of sebum, the skin's natural oil. This excess oil can then mix with bacteria, dead skin and debris to clog pores resulting in breakouts! The best skincare tips and products for perimenopausal and menopausal skin Perimenopausal and menopausal skin requires extra care due to hormonal changes that affect its texture, hydration, and elasticity. Here are some of the best skincare tips and products to keep your skin healthy and radiant during this phase!   Hydration is key As estrogen levels drop, your skin produces less natural oil, leading to dryness. To combat this you need to use a rich, hydrating moisturiser. Look for products with ingredients like hyaluronic acid, glycerin, and ceramides to lock in moisture and strengthen the skin barrier. Solution: We highly recommend Pevonia Age Correction Marine Collagen Cream. This Pevonia global best-seller and beautifully nourishing cream is not only rich in ceramides, glycerin and hyaluronic acid but collagen too! Deeply hydrating, it rejuvenates skin, replenishing vital nutrients while softening fine lines and wrinkles. It’s so good! Boost collagen production Loss of collagen and elastin leads to sagging and wrinkles. To promote collagen synthesis you’ll want to use products rich in retinol and or peptides: Retinol increases cell turnover and collagen production, while peptides help stimulate collagen to improve firmness. Solution: Hailed the anti-ageing wonder serum, Medicalia's Retinol Concentrate is designed to normalize and boost cellular performance with Micro-Retinol technology. Ideal for all mature skin types or as preventative care, the serum helps improve elasticity, plump the skin and diminish the look of wrinkles, resulting in a brighter, more evenly toned complexion. Protect from UV damage Menopausal skin is more prone to sun damage, which can lead to age spots and further loss of elasticity so youll need to be sure that you are religious about applying broad-spectrum SPF daily. Make sure you choose at least SPF 30 to prevent further UV damage and hyperpigmentation. Solution: From Hubislab's Post Rays UV Protect Sun Block SPF50+ PA+++ to Vie Collection's Mela White Protective Sunscreen SPF 30 find out all about SPF protection and the best one for you here. Gentle exfoliation is a must When youre going through the perimenopause and menopause cell turnover starts to really slow down, leading to dull, uneven skin. Regular exfoliation is therefore essential as it helps slough off dead skin cells to reveal new hidden ones underneath! Just make sure you opt for chemical exfoliants. AHAs (like glycolic acid) or BHAs (like salicylic acid) will gently exfoliate without irritating sensitive skin. Solution: Pevonia Renewing Glycocides Cream. Combining glycolic acid with hydration hero hyaluronic acid, this exfoliating treatment cream works to dissolve dead skin cells, improving skin texture and diminishing fine lines too! Skin resurfaces soother, brighter and younger…seriously. Strengthen the skin barrier Another symptom of menopause is thinner more fragile skin so it's crucial to keep the barrier strong. Use products with ceramides and niacinamide as these ingredients help repair and strengthen the skin barrier, reducing irritation and sensitivity. Solution: We can’t get enough of Vie Collection's Serum De Vie - High Performance Youth Concentrate! For those serious about combating the signs of ageing, this powerful, beautifully nourishing serum is a game-changer. Its advanced formula works at a cellular level to protect skin cells while targeting fine lines, wrinkles, loss of elasticity and hyperpigmentation, helping to restore a youthful, firm and smooth complexion. With its powerful blend of antioxidants and peptides, it helps to stimulate collagen production and improve skin elasticity while niacinamide slows the transfer of melanin to key parts of the skin to fade the look of dark spots and age spots. It’s the ultimate weapon in your anti-ageing arsenal, believe me! Fight hyperpigmentation Hormonal changes can increase pigmentation issues, leading to age spots. To help this you need to use brightening serums with Vitamin C or niacinamide: These ingredients help fade dark spots and brighten the skin. Solution: Phytomer Oligoforce Lumination Targeted Dark Spot Mask with Vitamin B3 (rich in Niacinamide) This sheet mask soaked with a lotion enriched with Vitamin B3 visibly smoothes, plumps and evens skin tone after each application. Day after day, wrinkles are reduced, dark spots faded and skin tone evened out.  When it comes to Vitamin C (paired with niacinamide) , our absolute favourite is Derma Max Vitamin-C Complex 50% Ampoule. This perfectly nourishing Vitamin C based brightening complex helps reduce discolouration and lighten skin tone. Paired with niacinamide, it prevents the formation of hyperpigmentation and reduces melanin production. The result, brighter, more even skin!   Soothe with anti-inflammatory ingredients Menopausal skin can become more sensitive and prone to redness or irritation so try incorporating calming ingredients. Look for products with aloe vera, chamomile, or green tea to reduce inflammation and soothe irritation. Solution: Hubislab Post Rays Chamomile Complex 70% Ampoule. We have tried and tested this powerhouse product ourselves and are here to tell you just how good it really is! Firstly it’s deeply nourishing and soothing at the same time. It feels like silk when applied to the skin and it instantaneously calms irritation. It’s antibacterial and anti-inflammatory and we love that it purifies, protects and strengthens too, thanks to its outstanding cocktail of 70% Chamomile combined with other natural soothing ingredients.   Use night treatments Nighttime is when your skin repairs itself, making it a crucial time to use targeted treatments. Solution: Phytomer Night Recharge Youth Enhancing Cream. Sometimes the moisturiser we use in the day isn’t quite enough at night. This is when a night cream is a great option! At night, our skin goes into repair and regeneration mode so a richer night cream can make all the difference. In fact, a good night cream will not only sooth and calm skin while you sleep, but also deliver lasting moisture while addressing common skin concerns such as moisture loss and skin ageing! They also help in the skin repair and renewal process by improving cell turnover! The Phytomer Night Recharge is a beautiful rich textured cream which literally cocoons skin while restoring youthful vitality with a nourishing blend of active marine botanicals, alpha hydroxy acids and conditioning oils.   Be armed with treatment creams for blemish and acne flare ups Following a specific skincare routine can really help to keep acne at bay.  By using a gentle cleanser, non-comedogenic moisturiser, and targeted treatments, you can make all the difference to your skin. Some spot treatments can work wonders at reducing, and in some cases eliminating, unwanted blemishes overnight. This is because they encourage rapid healing by controlling bacteria, reducing inflammation and diminishing the follicular accumulation of keratin. For the most effective results look for spot treatments formulated with ingredients such as benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid. We highly recommend Phytomer's Oligopur Blemish Target Gel as the best spot treatment! It targets blemishes with precision, rapidly improving the skin’s appearance and eliminating spots almost overnight! Simply apply a small amount of product to your pimples and let the powerful ingredients keep your skin follicles clean to achieve an even and bright complexion by morning. Also, don't forget sunscreen – it's like armour for your skin, yes even for those of us with acne! And I know it sounds counterintuitive, slathering sunscreen all over acne flareups but believe me when I say avoiding sunscreen can worsen the appearance of acne, and if the skin gets sunburnt, the symptoms of acne can be painfully exasperated. Just be sure to choose your sunscreen wisely. Using the right sunscreen can prevent and heal acne, soothe the skin, keep dark spots and clogged pores at bay, all while protecting from harmful UV rays. We love Hubislab Herb 8 Soothing Blemish Balm SPF30 PA++   By combining these tips and using the right products to address the unique needs of your skin you can maintain healthy, glowing skin during perimenopause and menopause.

Keep reading for 10 essential ways (and products!) to get your skin prepped for the sunny season ahead!   Exfoliate for a fresh start While you might have been occasionally exfoliating your face throughout the cooler winter months, I can bet your bottom dollar many of us have neglected the skin on our bodies! Unfortunately, winter can leave your skin dry and dull, with dead skin cells building up on the surface. Exfoliating really is key to sloughing away these dead cells and revealing the fresh, smooth skin underneath! But that’s not all! Exfoliating your skin can also help fade uneven patches and hyperpigmentation that may have developed during the winter months too! And don’t forget! As the weather gets warmer that means increased sweating and oil production which can lead to clogged pores and blemishes – ekk, so get exfoliating today! For your face use a gentle exfoliator with ingredients like lactic acid or jojoba beads 1-2 times a week to avoid irritation. Remember exfoliation also helps your skin absorb other products better, so your summer skincare routine can work its magic. Try Medicalia's Exfoliating Cleanser. This outstanding cleanser is formulated with Lactic Acid and Jojoba Beads to thoroughly remove makeup, excess oil and bacteria. It also works to eliminate epidermal keratin buildup, impurities, and pollutants and renders the skin clean, soft, and vibrant for a smoother, visibly brighter complexion!! Its amazing for all skin types too. For your body opt for a deeply nourishing exfoliator rich in ingredients such as glycerin, aloe and shea butter. We love Pevonia’s Silky Skin Body Scrub. It’s been a favourite of ours and our customers for years for very good reason. It’s a beautifully creamy exfoliator. For face and body (yes, it is recommended for both!) try Pevonia’s Chocolate Indulgence Foaming Salt Scrub. It smells divine, it’s nutrient rich thanks to its formulation of cacao extract and energizing sea salt, it is lusciously foaming when applied (which is kind of cool) and it leaves you smoother, glowing and positively refined from head to toe! Oh and it’s recommended for all skin types!   Keep skin hydrated Increased sun exposure and higher temperatures can quickly dehydrate your skin, leaving it parched and more prone to irritation which is why keeping skin hydrated is key especially in the hotter months. Start by switching to a lightweight, hydrating moisturiser that contains ingredients like hyaluronic acid and glycerin. These humectants draw water into your skin, keeping it plump and dewy without feeling heavy in the heat. We love Phytomer Hydra Continue Radiance Energizing Cream. Thanks to its beautifully lightweight texture, it helps keep that outer layer of skin perfectly nourished without feeling too heavy. Rich in vitamins, it revitalizes, activates your skin’s cellular activity to promote natural regrowth, hydrates, softens and smooths skin for a radiant youthful appearance   Step Up Your SPF game If there’s one non-negotiable in your summer skincare routine, it’s sunscreen. UV rays are stronger in the summer, increasing the risk of sunburn, premature ageing, and skin cancer. Opt for a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher to protect your skin from both UVA and UVB rays. Don’t forget to reapply every two hours, especially if you’re swimming or sweating. Look for lightweight, non-greasy formulas that won’t clog pores or leave a white cast (because nobody likes that!) We highly recommend Medicalia's Sunscreen SPF 40 with Blue Light Shield. The one and only reason why so many people are reluctant to use sunscreen (despite knowing how important it is) is because they can’t stand the texture or smell. Well with this outstanding tinted formulation there is no thick white paste or unruly sunscreen smell in sight! It feels like a lightweight moisturiser, smells divine, is loaded with anti-ageing goodies and it won’t cause itchiness thanks to its mineral formulation including both zinc and iron oxides. Very slightly tinted (though most of the tint disappears once it’s absorbed) it leaves your skin looking smoother and calmer. Oh and it protects skin against not only UVA and UVB rays (yes it provides skin with broad spectrum protection) but pollution and blue light damage omitted from our screens too! What’s more the formula is reef-safe and works for all skin types and tones too! Its outstanding!   Switch to a lighter cleanser When the weather is warmer we are more likely to sweat which means increased oil production! Therefore it’s important to use a gentle, yet effective cleanser that can remove impurities without stripping your skin. Gel or foam-based cleansers are ideal for summer as they feel refreshing and can help control excess oil. Just be careful not to over-cleanse, as it can lead to dryness or trigger your skin to produce even more oil. We can’t get enough of Pevonia’s best-selling CleanRefresh Foaming Oil Cleanser. It’s a lightweight oil-gel to foaming formulation which gently but deeply cleanses the skin and regulates excess oiliness without causing dryness that many gel or foaming cleansers can. It acts like a super magnet entrapping pollutants, impurities and bacteria to leave skin radiantly refreshed, soft and supple after every application.   Incorporate antioxidants into your routine Summer means for many of us more time outdoors (who doesn’t love a little beach action) and with that comes exposure to free radicals from UV rays, pollution, and environmental stressors. These can damage your skin, causing premature ageing and dullness. Protect your skin by incorporating antioxidants like vitamin C, green tea extract, or niacinamide into your routine. Antioxidants help neutralize free radicals, brighten the skin, and boost your sunscreen’s effectiveness.   Keep your skin cool with mists Summer heat can often make your skin feel inflamed, irritated, or sweaty. A refreshing facial mist can be a lifesaver on those hot days. Look for mists containing soothing ingredients like aloe vera and rose flower oil to cool down and hydrate your skin throughout the day. Keep one in your bag for a quick refresh whenever you need it! I can’t speak more highly of Pevonia’s Hyaluronic Acid HydraMist. A true multi-tasker, it can be used in the morning to revitalise your senses and replenish the moisture your skin has lost overnight, after your makeup to set it in place, throughout the day to help your skin stay supple and fresh (or as the perfect pick-me-up), and as a toner to enhance your evening cleanse. What’s more it will actually improve the absorption of your serum and moisturiser optimising the benefits and overall results too!   Don’t Forget About Your Lips When it comes to our routine our lips can often be overlooked but why shouldn’t they receive the same level as TLC as the rest of your skin! After all they can suffer from sun damage just like the rest of your face. To prevent dry, cracked lips, apply a lip balm with SPF throughout the day. Look for hydrating ingredients like shea butter to keep your lips soft and protected.   Lighten Up Your Makeup While many of us love to wear makeup, more heavy formulations can feel uncomfortable in the heat and may clog our pores which in turn can lead to breakouts. The warmer months of spring into summer is the perfect time to embrace a more natural, lightweight look. Swap out full-coverage foundations for tinted moisturisers or BB creams with SPF for breathable, sheer coverage that still gives you a glow too. A personal favourite of mine is the ELES Mineral Sheer Tint SPF 20. For warm summer day, or those days when you want a no-makeup makeup look or don’t feel like wearing much makeup at all, this sheer tint is a winner. It offers a light, breathable coverage while providing sun protection. The mineral-based formula is gentle on the skin, making it perfect for everyday wear.   Protect Your Skin with Clothing As we all know sunscreen is a must but pairing it with protective clothing can help shield your skin from harmful UV rays even more. Invest in wide-brimmed hats, UV-protective sunglasses, and lightweight, long-sleeved clothing. These items can keep your skin safe while allowing you to enjoy outdoor activities without worry.   Stay hydrated from within We all know drinking a sufficient amount of water is imperative and upping your water intake in the hot, summer months is even more essential. Staying hydrated helps flush out toxins, keeps your skin looking plump and radiant, and prevents dryness or flakiness. Aim for at least 8 glasses of water a day and consider adding hydrating foods like watermelon, cucumber, and strawberries to your diet. I love to drink herbal tea daily too! A hot drink might sound counterintuitive but I’m here to tell it it actually cools you down while quenching your thirst!   Preparing your skin for summer is all about hydration, protection, and balance. By making a few simple adjustments to your routine—like swapping heavy moisturisers for lighter options, being religious when it comes to applying your sunscreen, and adding antioxidants to your routine, you’ll keep your skin healthy, glowing, and ready to enjoy the summer months ahead. Remember, consistency is key, so start prepping now and get your skin summer-ready!

SPF protection: Choosing the best sunscreen for your skin

SPF protection: Choosing the best sunscreen for your skin

by Jo Boyden on Sep 06 2024
With the weather warming up and many of swapping out our jumpers for summer attire, it’s time to make sure we are being serious about our suncare! And yes, you should be wearing SPF protection all year round come rain, hail or shine, but it’s the spring and summer months that can really do the most damage to our skin due to an increase in sun exposure and UVA and UVB intensity. With so many sunscreen options out there though, it’s easy to feel confused about which one to choose, how much to apply, and why it’s so important in the first place. Keep reading as we explain why SPF is non-negotiable for anyone who cares about their skin and how to choose the best sunscreen for you.   Firstly, why is sunscreen so important? As much as we all love the sun, it sadly emits harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays that can do serious damage to our skin, leading to premature ageing and in some cases skin cancer. These UV rays come in two main forms: UVA and UVB, and they both affect our skin in different ways. A daily SPF acts as a protective barrier, preventing these rays from damaging our skin.   UVA verses UVB rays When it comes to protecting your skin from the sun, understanding the difference between UVA and UVB rays is essential for choosing the right sunscreen. UVB rays affect the surface of your skin and are primarily responsible for sunburn. They also play a significant role in developing skin cancer. UVB rays vary in intensity depending on the season, but they’re dangerous year-round. UVA rays penetrate deeper into your skin and are responsible for premature ageing, causing wrinkles, fine lines, and dark spots. UVA rays can also contribute to skin cancer. They are present year-round, even on cloudy days, and can even penetrate through windows! Scary stuff! To protect against both UVA and UVB rays you need a broad-spectrum sunscreen.   What does SPF stand for and what does it actually mean? SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor, and it’s a measure of how long your skin is protected from UVB rays only, before it starts to burn. For example, SPF 30 means your skin is protected 30 times longer than it would be without sunscreen. However, this doesn’t mean that higher SPF numbers offer exponentially more protection. Here’s how it breaks down: SPF 15 blocks about 93% of UVB rays. SPF 30 blocks about 97% of UVB rays. SPF 50 blocks about 98% of UVB rays. While SPF 100 might seem like overkill, there’s only a slight increase in protection from SPF 50 to SPF 100, so don’t stress too much about going over SPF 50. What matters most is that you’re applying enough sunscreen and reapplying it regularly.   How does SPF work? SPF doesn’t create an impenetrable shield but rather extends the amount of time you can stay in the sun without burning. For example, if your skin would normally burn after 10 minutes in the sun, applying SPF 30 theoretically extends that time by 30 times, giving you about 300 minutes (or 5 hours) of protection. This can vary based on factors like skin type, intensity of sunlight, and amount of sunscreen applied. There are two main types of sunscreens - physical (mineral) and chemical sunscreen: Physical or mineral-based sunscreens are formulated with ingredients like zinc oxide and titanium dioxide which create a barrier on your skin’s surface that reflects UV rays. They’re great for sensitive skin and are often less irritating. Chemical sunscreens formulated with ingredients like homosalate, avobenzone and oxybenzone, work by absorbing UV rays before they can damage your skin. They’re often lighter in texture but may irritate sensitive skin.   How long does SPF really last for? Even though the SPF number indicates extended protection, sunscreens typically last only 2 hours before they need to be reapplied. This is especially true if you’re swimming, sweating, or towelling off. Water-resistant sunscreens can help, but they still need to be reapplied frequently to maintain their effectiveness.   Additional application tips: Be sure to apply sunscreen generously to all exposed areas of your skin, and don’t forget often-missed spots like your ears, neck, and the tops of your feet. The key to effective sun protection is consistency—whether it’s sunny or cloudy, always include sunscreen in your daily skincare routine, it’s THE most important step!   Choosing the right SPF: For daily use, an SPF 30 sunscreen is generally sufficient, as it blocks about 97% of UVB rays. However, if you have fair skin, are prone to burning, or spend a lot of time outdoors, consider an SPF 50 or higher for additional protection. Keep in mind that no sunscreen can block 100% of UV rays, so reapplication every two hours, or after swimming or sweating, is crucial.   What is the best sunscreen for you? The first thing you want to do when selecting your sunscreen is to know your skin type. If you have oily skin, you’ll want to look for a non-comedogenic, oil-free formulations that won’t clog pores. Dry skin? Opt for a sunscreen with hydrating ingredients like glycerin or hyaluronic acid. For sensitive skin, mineral sunscreens are your best bet, as they’re less likely to cause irritation. For daily use under makeup, a lightweight, mattifying sunscreen might be more suitable. Some sunscreen products can be specially formulated to provide other benefits to the skin, such as extra moisture, and may contain beneficial ingredients like soothing niacinamide and ceramides to restore your skin’s natural protective barrier.   Our sunscreen recommendations; Hubislab Post Rays UV Protect Sun Block SPF50+ PA+++ This amazing multi-tasking sun block provides complete UV and antioxidant protection for ageing or stressed-out skin! Its non-irritating, has an SPF of 50+ and protects the skin against UV radiation, preventing dryness, dullness and signs of premature ageing including hyperpigmentation. Rich in peptides and collagen it keeps skin nourished, healthy and elastic and the invisible matte formula applies smoothly and stays on all day. With zinc oxide as its main ingredient, there is zero irritation, so it is ideal for all skin types including those with extremely sensitive and/or ageing skin.   Medicalia Sunscreen SPF 40 with Blue Light Shield The one and only reason why so many people are reluctant to use sunscreen (despite knowing how important it is) is because they can’t stand the texture or smell. Vie Collection Mela White Protective Sunscreen SPF 30 This is not only an amazing daily sunscreen to protect skin from UV rays, but it’s also formulated with two high-tech ingredients that act against hyperpigmentation and free radicals. Day after day, with daily use of course! Dark spots are less visible, skin is unified, smoothed and better protected. It’s a fantastic option for those who are after a great sun protection but are already suffering from sun damage.   ELES Blue Light Radiant BB Cream 30 If you are looking for an SPF product that is your makeup and daily moisturiser in one, look no further than this best-selling BB Cream with SPF 30 from ELES. 9 signs of a damaged skin barrier and how to fix it

9 signs of a damaged skin barrier and how to fix it

by Jo Boyden on Sep 06 2024
A healthy skin barrier is the secret to glowing skin. When it’s healthy, our skin looks radiant and plump, but when it’s damaged it can become prone to dryness, inflammation, breakouts and more! If you’ve been dealing with skin issues that just won’t go away, your skin barrier could well be to blame!  Keep reading to learn about 9 common signs of a damaged skin barrier, why yours may be compromised and the best solutions to fix it!   What is our skin barrier? The outer most layer of our skin, or technically known as the stratum corneum, our skin barrier is a complex system of lipids, proteins and cells. It’s the first line of defence against bacteria and external aggressors, from pollution and harsh weather conditions, to stress, smoking and even blue light damage from our digital devices! Think of it as a protective shield keeping irritants out and locking moisture in. What are the most common signs of a damaged skin barrier? Increased sensitivity Do you find your skin reacting to products that never used to be a problem? Unfortunately a damaged barrier can make your skin hypersensitive. This means that products with active ingredients like retinol or vitamin C might suddenly cause stinging or irritation. Aghh How to fix it: Simplify your skincare routine. Focus on soothing and hydrating skin. Opt for fragrance-free, hypoallergenic products designed specifically for sensitive skin, then slowly reintroduce active ingredients once your barrier is repaired. Dryness and Flakiness Dry, flaky skin can be a major sign that your skin barrier isn’t holding onto moisture the way it should. Even if you’re moisturising regularly, your skin might still feel parched and tight. How to fix it: You need to incorporate a hydrating serum rich in hyaluronic acid into your daily routine and up the ante with your moisturiser too! You want a nourishing moisturiser formulated with ceramides, hyaluronic acid and glycerin which will help lock in moisture and rebuild the barrier. Redness and Inflammation One of the first indicators of a damaged skin barrier is redness that just won’t go away. If your skin is constantly inflamed, blotchy, or has developed conditions like rosacea, it’s a sign that your protective layer is compromised. Without the barrier functioning properly, your skin is more susceptible to irritants and environmental factors that can cause persistent redness. How to fix it: Calm your skin with products containing anti-inflammatory ingredients like niacinamide, aloe vera, and chamomile. Avoid anything that could further irritate your skin, like harsh exfoliants or overly fragrant products. Breakouts and Acne When your skin barrier is compromised, your skin can overproduce oil to compensate for the lack of moisture. This can lead to clogged pores, breakouts, and even acne in those of us who normally have clear skin. How to fix it: Use a gentle cleanser that will remove excess oil without stripping the skin of its natural moisture. And make sure you avoid products that could clog your pores. Incorporate lightweight, oil-free moisturisers that hydrate without causing breakouts. Tightness and Discomfort Do you often feel like your skin is tight or uncomfortable, especially after cleansing? This could be a sign that your barrier is stripped of its natural oils. When your skin loses its protective lipids, it can no longer maintain its elasticity and comfort, leading to a sensation of tightness. How to fix it: The first step to fixing tight, uncomfortable skin is to replenish lost moisture and help rebuild the lipid layer of the barrier. Creamy or oil-based cleansers are great for restoring hydration while gently removing dirt and impurities and look for products rich in ceramides, fatty acids, glycerin, hyaluronic acid and squalane which will help restore the natural protective layer as well as lock in moisture. Hyperpigmentation A weakened barrier can make your skin more susceptible to damage from the sun and environmental pollutants, leading to an increase in hyperpigmentation such as dark spots, also known as age spots and sun spots! If you notice that your skin is developing more pigmentation issues, it could be a sign that your barrier needs some serious TLC. How to fix it: Incorporate antioxidants such as vitamin c and niacinamide into your skincare routine as they can help repair the skin and reduce the appearance of dark spots by neutralizing free radicals. Once your barrier is stronger you can then start introducing targeted treatments to fade hyperpigmentation. And sunscreen is a non-negotiable! Look for sunscreens that not only protect your skin from sun damage but also help repair hyperpigmentation too! Itching and burning sensations If your skin feels itchy, tingly, or has a burning sensation, even when you’re using your usual products, this could be a sign that your skin barrier has been compromised. This discomfort is your skin’s way of telling you it needs some extra care. How to fix it: Avoid using hot water on your face and skip harsh treatments like scrubs or peels. Opt for soothing, fragrance-free moisturisers and avoid over-washing. Dehydrated skin despite an oily appearance Ever had skin that feels oily on the surface but tight and dry underneath? This is a classic sign of a damaged barrier. Your skin might be overproducing oil to make up for the lack of moisture, leading to that uncomfortable mix of oily and dehydrated skin. How to fix it: Balance your skin with hydrating products that aren’t too heavy. Hyaluronic acid serums and light, non-greasy moisturisers can help provide the moisture your skin needs without adding excess oil. Ingredients like glycerin and squalane can provide moisture balance. Premature ageing Without proper protection, your skin is more exposed to free radicals and environmental damage which can accelerate the ageing process! Therefore a damaged skin barrier can lead to premature wrinkles, fine lines, and a loss of elasticity. How to fix it: Focus on repairing your barrier with nourishing, antioxidant-rich products that protect and strengthen your skin. Incorporate ingredients like peptides, vitamin C, vitamin E and sunscreen to help combat free radicals and boost collagen production.   Why do you have a damaged skin barrier? A damaged skin barrier can result from a variety of factors! Anything from your lifestyle and skincare habits to the environment. Here are the most common reasons your skin barrier could be compromised right now; Over-exfoliation Using exfoliants too frequently, whether physical scrubs or chemical exfoliants (like AHAs and BHAs), can strip away the outermost layer of your skin. This layer is crucial for protecting the underlying skin, and over-exfoliating can leave your skin vulnerable to damage. Harsh skincare products Products with high concentrations of active ingredients, such as retinol or acids, can be too strong for some skin types, especially if used too often or without proper moisturising and sun protection. Harsh cleansers with sulfates or alcohol can also strip your skin of its natural oils, leading to a weakened barrier. Environmental factors Exposure to extreme weather conditions—like harsh winds, cold temperatures, or excessive sun—can compromise your skin barrier. Pollution and other environmental toxins can also stress the skin, leading to barrier damage over time. Dehydration There are many reasons your skin might be dehydrated. From the products you are using (you need more moisture) to a change in weather or simply being over exposed to hot or cold air be it air con or heating! And then there is the chance we are simply dehydrated from not drinking enough water I know many of us can be guilty of that! Over-cleansing Washing your face too often or using water that’s too hot can strip your skin of its natural oils. This over-cleansing can disrupt the skin’s natural pH balance and lead to barrier damage. Eek! Stress and lack of sleep Sadly stress and inadequate sleep can really take a toll on our skin. Stress hormones like cortisol can lead to inflammation and impair the skin’s ability to repair itself, making your barrier more susceptible to damage. Allergies and irritants Using products that contain allergens or irritants, such as fragrances or certain preservatives, can trigger allergic reactions or irritation, leading to a compromised skin barrier. Poor diet Yes! You read that right. What you eat can definitely reflect on your skin! A diet lacking in essential nutrients like healthy fats, vitamins, and antioxidants, can weaken your skin barrier. Consuming too much sugar or processed foods can also lead to inflammation and skin issues. Ageing As you age, your skin naturally loses some of its ability to retain moisture and regenerate. This makes the skin barrier more prone to damage and less efficient at protecting against external factors. Medical Conditions Certain skin conditions, like eczema, psoriasis, or rosacea, inherently involve a compromised skin barrier. These conditions require specific care to help manage symptoms and protect the skin.   How to repair a damaged skin barrier If you now know your skin barrier has been damaged there are simple steps you can take to fix it so fear not! Just remember restoring your skin barrier won’t happen overnight though, so make sure you are consistent with your care and you will see improvements we promise! Here are a few general tips: Avoid hot water Ok so this is one I am definitely guilty of. I LOVE a piping hot shower or bath but I do know that this is damaging my skin! Sadly hot water can strip your skin of its natural oils, exacerbating dryness and irritation. Try to be less like me and use lukewarm water when at least cleansing your face! Stay Hydrated Drinking plenty of water helps to maintain your skin’s hydration levels from the inside out (one hand holding my water bottle as I type this!) Try to manage stress and get plenty of shut eye! Stress-reducing activities like meditation, listening to music and exercise can definitely help alleviate stress. And there is a reason “beauty sleep” is a thing! By trying to get enough sleep (7-9 hours day night) can really make a difference to your skin. Protect your skin from the sun Well this is definitely a given. We all know that the sun is the no. 1 cause of damage to our skin. Hyperpigmentation: The causes and the best treatments

Hyperpigmentation: The causes and the best treatments

by Jo Boyden on Aug 30 2024
Hyperpigmentation is a fairly common skin condition and affects people of all ages. But if you are one of the many dealing with stubborn dark spots or patches on your skin you are likely wondering why and how you can get rid of it! Understanding what causes hyperpigmentation is the first step in effectively treating it. Read on to discover everything you need to know about hyperpigmentation, what the most common causes are, as well as the best options for achieving a more even, radiant complexion.   What is hyperpigmentation? Hyperpigmentation is when certain areas of your skin become darker than the surrounding skin. This happens because of an excess production of melanin, the pigment that gives your skin its colour. Hyperpigmentation can appear as very small brown, black, grey or pink spots, or patches but can also cover larger areas of your skin, usually on your face. These spots or patches are more commonly known as brown spots, age spots, sun spots or as our grandparents used to call them, liver spots. While hyperpigmentation is not harmful, and can be common in people of all ages and skin types, it can definitely be frustrating! Fortunately, with the right treatments, you can effectively reduce the appearance of hyperpigmentation and restore a more even complexion!   What are the most common types of hyperpigmentation? Age Spots Also known as liver spots (as our grandparents would have called them back in the day!), age spots are flat, brown, grey, or black spots that typically appear on sun-exposed areas of the skin as you age. In short, age spots tend to develop in people over the age of 50 and are the result of prolonged UV exposure over the years.  Sun Spots Also caused by UV exposure, sun spots, medically known as actinic keratoses, are similar in appearance to age spots but can occur at any age. Although they can commonly appear on the face, you can also find sun spots all over areas of the body which has been exposed to the sun. The biggest difference between harmless age spots and sun spots is the texture. Age spots are smooth and flat, but potentially dangerous sun spots usually feel rough and scaly. Melasma Also known as chloasma, or “the mask of pregnancy”! the potential main triggers for Melasma is genetics, hormonal fluctuations and sun overexposure. Very common in pregnancy, melasma can suddenly appear in the form of brown patches usually on your face.   What causes hyperpigmentation? Several factors can actually contribute to hyperpigmentation, although sun exposure is the no.1 cause! Sun Exposure UV rays from the sun trigger melanin production, leading to sunspots and dark patches, especially on areas frequently exposed to the sun. Hormonal Changes Conditions like melasma, often triggered by pregnancy or birth control pills, cause dark, blotchy patches on the skin. Inflammation Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation can result from acne, injuries, or skin conditions like eczema, where the skin overproduces melanin during healing. Age Over time, the skin’s ability to regulate melanin production diminishes, leading to age spots.   How to get rid of hyperpigmentation Ultimately to prevent or reduce hyperpigmentation you need to do 4 things; Wear sunscreen Sadly exposure to the sun, (which we know ramps up over the summer months!) can both worsen existing age spots and sun spots, as well as encourage new ones to form! The most effective way to therefore prevent this from happening is to apply sunscreen (at least SPF 30) liberally and religiously even single day. You know I preach about how sunscreen should be a non-negotiable step in your skincare routine come rain, hail or shine though! Use brightening products Products containing Vitamin C, niacinamide and retinol are all powerful allies in the fight against pigmentation. These ingredients work to lighten dark spots and even out your skin tone, leaving you with a brighter, more uniform complexion. Look for formulas with high concentrations of active ingredients for maximum efficacy. Just remember skincare requires patience and consistency to reap the long-term benefits!  Exfoliate regularly Regular exfoliation is key to fading age spots and pigmentation. Alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) and beta hydroxy acids (BHAs) help slough off dead skin cells, promoting cell turnover and revealing fresher, more evenly-toned skin. Consider using a gentle chemical exfoliant a few times a week to target discolouration without irritating your skin. Wear protective clothing Wearing protective clothing will also help fight hyperpigmentation by shielding your skin from harmful UV rays, which as we know are a major cause of age spots, sun spots and uneven skin tone. Fabrics with a tight weave and sun-protective properties will block the penetration of UV rays, reducing the risk of sun-induced pigmentation. Wide-brimmed hats, long sleeves, and UV-protective fabrics are effective at minimizing direct sun exposure, preventing existing pigmentation from worsening, and helping to maintain an even skin tone over time. And don’t forget your peepers! sunglasses are a must too!   The best products to fade hyperpigmentation As mentioned, one of the simplest ways to protect your skin from hyperpigmentation is to wear sunscreen daily, no matter what the weather is like. However if you are looking for products to fade your already pigmentated skin, we have the solution for you!   Vie Collection Mela White Protective Sunscreen SPF 30 This is not only an amazing daily sunscreen to protect skin from UV rays, but it’s also formulated with two high-tech ingredients that act against dark spots and free radicals. It’s really good stuff and I’m testament to that!  Medicalia L Retinol Smoothing Cream This powerful yet gentle retinol cream is a must in the fight against Hyperpigmentation! Paired with niacinamide, it prevents the formation of hyperpigmentation and reduces melanin production. The result, brighter, more even skin! Vita B3 Concentrated Solution Boost your skincare routine with a shot of vitamin B3 to visibly improve skins radiance while reducing the appearance of dark spots. 10% vitamin B3 (niacinamide) acts by slowing down the transport of melanin to the keratinocytes (the most common type of skin cell constituting the epidermis) effectively decreasing pigmentation while reinforcing the protective functions of the skin barrier for the optimal skin health. The concentrate’s light, melting texture allows the active ingredients to penetrate the skin for outstanding efficiency and immediate results. Skin is brighter, more uniform and more visibly radiant. After continued use, hyperpigmentation is significantly reduced.
Salicylic acid: What is it and how will it benefit your skin

Salicylic acid: What is it and how will it benefit your skin

by Jo Boyden on Aug 17 2024
Whether you’re battling breakouts, dealing with oily skin, or just looking for a way to keep your complexion clear, you’ll want to ensure salicylic acid is an ingredient in your skincare! But what exactly is salicylic acid? And how does it transform you skin? Keep reading for everything you need to know about salicylic acid—why it’s so effective, how to use it, and why it deserves a spot in your skincare routine. What is salicylic acid? Salicylic acid is a beta hydroxy acid (BHA) known for its exfoliating and anti-inflammatory properties, commonly used in skincare. it penetrates deep into the pores, dissolving excess oil and exfoliating dead skin cells. This helps prevent and treat breakouts, blackheads, and whiteheads. Unlike some harsher acne treatments, salicylic acid is gentle yet effective, making it suitable for frequent use (we are talking 2-3 times a week). Incorporating salicylic acid into your skincare routine can lead to clearer, smoother skin! How does salicylic acid work? By breaking down the bonds between dead skin cells, salicylic acid encourages their shedding, which helps to prevent pore blockages that lead to breakouts. Is salicylic acid suitable for all skin types? Salicylic acid is ideal for those with oily or acne-prone skin, as it helps control excess oil production and prevents the formation of new pimples. However, it can also benefit other skin types, particularly those who are susceptible to the occasional breakout or congested skin. Can salicylic acid cause skin irritation? Salicylic acid can sometimes cause skin irritation, especially if you use it excessively or tend to have sensitive skin.  Common signs of irritation include redness, dryness, peeling, or a burning sensation. Just before you test the product first before applying all over your face. How often should you use salicylic acid? How often you use skincare formulated with salicylic acid really depends on the product itself as well your skin specific skin type. If you are new to salicylic acid, we recommend you start with using it once or twice a week and gradually increase to daily use if your skin tolerates it. It's also important to follow up with a good moisturiser to keep your skin hydrated. Can you use salicylic acid with other skincare ingredients? Yes, you can use salicylic acid with other skincare ingredients, but it's important to be cautious. Combining salicylic acid with soothing and hydrating ingredients like niacinamide and hyaluronic acid, can work wonders for your skin. However, be careful when combining it with other exfoliants like glycolic acid or retinol, as this can increase the risk of irritation. It's best to introduce these ingredients gradually into your routine or use them on alternate days to avoid over-exfoliating your skin. How to incorporate salicylic acid into your skincare routine Start with a cleanser containing salicylic acid, using it slowly to allow your skin to adjust. If your skin tolerates it well, you can gradually increase usage or introduce additional products like serums or spot treatments. Always follow with a moisturiser and sunscreen, as salicylic acid can make your skin more sensitive to the sun. 12 beauty tips these celebrities swear by

Ever wondered how your favourite celebrities manage to defy the ageing process and maintain their flawless complexion year after year? While genetics may play a role, the secrets to their youthful, glowing skin often lie in carefully curated skincare routines and expert advice passed down from generation to generation. From A-list actors to supermodels gracing the runway, keep reading as we uncover the top beauty tips these celebrities swear by, 12 simple strategies you and I are already likely doing daily, just not religiously like them! Do not skimp on the amount of water you drink "I swear by hydration. Drinking plenty of water keeps my skin looking plump and youthful." - Jennifer Aniston Keeping yourself hydrated both inside and out is one of the most essential tips when it comes to your skin. This is because water is vital for maintaining skin health and youthfulness. It hydrates the skin from within promoting elasticity and plumpness while reducing the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines. Hydration also supports skin cell function, collagen production, and repair processes. Additionally, water helps flush out toxins, preventing breakouts and promoting clear skin. By strengthening the skin's natural barrier, water protects against environmental damage and maintains an even skin tone. Ultimately, staying hydrated is essential for preserving the youthful appearance and vitality of our skin! Try to drink a minimum of 8 glasses of water a day and for that much needed added nourishment make sure you always moisturise morning and night! We recommend using formulations rich in hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid attracts and retains moisture, plumping and hydrating the skin. In fact the molecules can hold 1,000 times its weight in water! This helps to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, leaving the skin smooth, supple, and youthful. We are obsessed with the Pevonia Hyaluronic Acid Hydra Serum and Hyaluronic acid Hydra Mist! Do things every day that will help you de-stress “I think that anything you can do to remove stress will give you a better glow. That’s the number one answer…" Cate Blanchett Stress is an inevitable part of life, but its impact doesn’t just affect our mood, it can significantly affect the health and appearance ofour skin too! Stress triggers the release of cortisol, a hormone that can throw our skin out of whack. It can cause the increase of oil production, leading to clogged pores and breakouts. It also has the ability tobreak down collagen and elastin, causing wrinkles and sagging. Plus, stress can make skin conditions like eczema and psoriasis flare up, making our skin red, itchy, and inflamed. All these things combined can leave our complexion looking dull and tired, far from the youthful glow so many celebrities promote! That's why it's important to find ways to de-stress and take care of our skin. Whether it's through deep breathing, yoga, meditation, listening to music, or simply some self-care time, giving ourselves a break can help keep our skin looking its glowing best! Eat a diet rich in Antioxidants “I eat lots of berries; they’re full of antioxidants" - Olivia Palermo Antioxidants can do wonders for our skin! And it’s true, a rich source comes from berries! Antioxidants help fight off free radicals, which are harmful molecules that can damage our skin cells and accelerate ageing. Berries like blueberries, strawberries, and raspberries are packed with antioxidants like vitamin C and polyphenols, which can help protect our skin from environmental damage, reduce inflammation, and promote a brighter, more youthful complexion. Incorporating these colourful fruits into our diet can nourish our skin from the inside out, leaving it looking radiant and healthy. We also love antioxidant rich skincare too! Here are three of our favourites; Naturys Anti-Age Antioxidant Facial Toner, Pevonia Vitamin C Complex and Pevonia’s Micro-Retinol Essential Moisturiser Always remove makeup before bed! "I've never gone to bed without washing my face. Never in my life. Even if I'm sick, tired — heck, even if I was drunk! I might forget to take off the dress, the shoes, and the jewellery, but not the makeup. It's second nature." - Salma Hayek Not washing your face before bed can have detrimental effects on your skin. Throughout the day, dirt, oil, and environmental pollutants accumulate on our skin's surface, clogging pores and leading to breakouts. By neglecting to cleanse your face at night, these impurities remain trapped, causing inflammation and acne. Additionally, makeup left on overnight can further exacerbate these issues, as it can mix with sweat and bacteria, increasing the risk of infections and irritation. Not cleansing your face before bed also disrupts the skin's natural renewal process, hindering its ability to repair and regenerate overnight! This can result in dullness and premature ageing! So, no matter how tired or tipsy you might be, get cleansing before hitting the hay! For hassle free cleansing use an all-rounder makeup remover like Phytomer’s Doux Contour Eye and Lip Waterproof Makeup Remover. It’s a fantastic and effectively melts away makeup and grime with minimum effort! Combining the effectiveness of an oil (a trio of oils in fact) and the gentleness of a lotion, this ultra-hydrating makeup remover, eradicates even the most stubborn of lips and eye makeup fast! Always wear sunscreen "Sunscreen, every single day, rain or shine. It's the best anti-ageing product out there." - Priyanka Chopra And we 100% agree! Sunscreen is hands down the no.1 defence against premature ageing! The harmful UV rays from the sun can cause a multitude of skin issues, including wrinkles, fine lines, sunspots, and sagging skin. By wearing sunscreen daily, you can protect your skin from these damaging effects and prevent premature ageing. UV radiation damages the skin's collagen and elastin fibres, leading to loss of elasticity and firmness, which are key contributors to aging skin. Additionally, UV exposure can result in hyperpigmentation, uneven skin tone, and the formation of wrinkles and fine lines. Using a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher helps shield the skin from both UVA and UVB rays, which are responsible for different types of damage. UVA rays penetrate deep into the skin and contribute to premature aging, while UVB rays primarily cause sunburns. Consistently wearing sunscreen, even on cloudy days or during the winter months, is essential for maintaining youthful-looking skin and protecting against the harmful effects of UV radiation. Incorporating sunscreen into your daily skincare routine is one of the best ways to prevent premature aging and maintain healthy, radiant skin for years to come. We love Medicalia – Sunscreen SPF 40 with Blue Light Shield. You might be a little reluctant to wear your sunscreen dailybecause quite frankly its smell and greasy texture puts you off, but that’s because you haven’t found a sunscreen that works for you! This one I promise you are going to love! It’s perfectly lightweight and does not leave a white case or greasy residue behind! It contains an exclusive mineral formula to shield skin from harmful sun rays, blue light damage and pollution! And what’s more, the formula is reef-safe and works for all skin types and tones too! Use eye cream daily “Never skip eye cream. It’s my secret weapon against fine lines and puffiness.” Sandra Bullock Your eyes are the most delicate area on your face and the first area to really age you! A good eye cream really can be game-changing when it comes to the pursuit of longer lasting youthful skin! Exfoliation is key “I start every day by exfoliating my face, something I’ve done for the past 40 years. I feel like it’s really contributed to my skin feeling fresh and smooth. Forty years ago, I read an article that said men always look five years younger than women who are their same age. They contributed that to them shaving every day, and the daily exfoliating with shaving making their skin look younger. I was like, I’m not going to let them get away with that!" Christie Brinkley Exfoliation is definitely key when it comes to skin looking younger! After all exfoliation promotes cell turnover, improving skin texture, and enhancing radiance. It also unclogs pores preventing breakouts while helping other products in your skincare routine absorb more effectively into skin. Just remember not every skin type can tolerate daily exfoliation and it depends on the exfoliator you use too! Its best to start slowly by exfoliating once or twice a week and if skin tends to be a little sensitive opt for fruit enzyme exfoliators which won’t irritate skin. Over-exfoliating or using harsh scrubs can strip the skin of its natural oils and lead to inflammation, redness, and sensitivity. Try incorporating facial massage into your daily skincare routine “Facial massages to boost blood flow and keep your skin looking fresh.” - Julia Roberts We couldn’t agree more! Facial massage offers a multitude of benefits for the skin, we just need to find the time to incorporate it into our day! Firstly, facial massage promotes improved circulation, delivering oxygen and essential nutrients to the skin while removing toxins. This enhanced blood flow results in a brighter, more radiant complexion, as well as improved skin tone and texture! Facial massage also stimulates the lymphatic syst
