Worried about sagging skin? The best tips to firm your face

by Jo Boyden on May 03 2024
Ageing. We all know it’s inevitable, but no one wants to wake up one day and find gravity playing tricks on their face! Sadly though, sagging skin, fine lines and wrinkles are all a natural part of the ageing process, but this doesn't mean we can’t do something to help slow down or improve their appearance. With the right preventive measures and skincare routine, you can prevent your skin from sagging prematurely and maintain firm and youthful-looking skin for years to come. Keep reading as we discuss the best tips for preventing sagging skin and achieving a more lifted, toned complexion. Firstly though what is sagging skin on the face?Sagging skin on the face refers to the loss of firmness and elasticity in the skin, leading to a drooping or sagging appearance. It occurs when the skin's supportive structures weaken over time. As a result, the skin loses its ability to bounce back, causing it to sag or droop, particularly in areas such as the cheeks, jawline, and neck. What causes sagging skin? You could be asking yourself why is your face suddenly sagging? Sagging skin on the face is actually caused by multiple factors. These include; Loss of Collagen and Elastin One of the main contributors to skin sagging is the decrease in the production of collagen and elastin, responsible for skin elasticity and firmness. As we age, our collagen and elastin levels decline and as a result the skin loses its ability to bounce back, resulting in sagging and drooping.Decreased skin hydrationHydration plays a crucial role in maintaining the plumpness and suppleness of the skin. With age, the skin's ability to retain moisture diminishes, resulting in dryness and dehydration. Dehydrated skin is more prone to sagging and wrinkles, as it lacks the necessary moisture to maintain its elasticity.Reduction in Facial Fat and Muscle ToneAs we age, the fat pads in our face begin to weaken, causing the skin to lose volume and support. Additionally, weakening of the facial muscles over time can contribute to sagging and drooping of facial tissues. These changes in fat distribution and muscle tone can result in a loss of facial contour and definition.UV and Blue Light damageProlonged exposure to UV rays from the sun and Blue Light damage from our devices accelerates the breakdown of collagen and elastin fibres in the skin. UV and Blue Light damage weakens the skin's structural support, leading to premature ageing signs such as sagging, wrinkles, and fine lines.Lifestyle FactorsCertain lifestyle habits, such as smoking, poor nutrition, and excessive alcohol consumption, can contribute to the breakdown of collagen and elastin in the skin. Smoking, in particular, has been linked to accelerated skin ageing and sagging due to its detrimental effects on blood circulation and oxygen delivery to the skin tissues.GeneticsThis one you can blame on your parents for! Unfortunately genetics can also influence the rate at which our skin ages and how saggy it becomes! Sadly some of us will develop sagging skin much earlier than others due to our genetic makeup! Eek. How to prevent sagging skinWhile some degree of face sagging is a natural part of the ageing process, there are various things we can do to help improve skin firmness and minimize the appearance of sagging skin. Stay Hydrated Hydration is key to maintaining the elasticity and suppleness of our skin. It’s nothing new but drinking plenty of water throughout the day to keep your skin hydrated from the inside out is essential. Water helps keep your skin cells plump and hydrated which in turn promotes elasticity. Additionally, use hydrating skincare products containing ingredients like hyaluronic acid to lock in moisture and plump up the skin. Always wear sunscreen Protecting our skin from UV rays and Blue Light damage with sunscreen and sun-protective measures can dramatically help prevent premature ageing and in turn sagging skin. Wear sunscreen with a high SPF every. single. day no matter what the weather, always consider wearing a hat and seek shade during peak hours when UV is at its most damaging. Follow a Healthy Diet Eating a balanced diet rich in antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals can support skin health and prevent sagging. Include plenty of fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and healthy fats in your diet to provide your skin with essential nutrients and promote collagen production. Including foods such as broccoli, spinach, sweet potato, avocado, nuts and blueberries will work wonders!! Exercise Regularly Regular exercise not only helps maintain a healthy weight but also helps keep sagging skin at bay! This is because it promotes circulation and muscle tone, which can contribute to firmer, more lifted skin. Incorporate strength training exercises targeting the face, neck, and body to keep your muscles toned and prevent sagging. Practice Good Skincare Habits Follow a consistent skincare routine that includes cleansing, exfoliating and moisturising, this will keep skin supple and looking younger for longer. Use Skincare Products with Active Ingredients As well as products formulated with Hyaluronic acid, you’ll want to use skincare containing active ingredients known for their firming and tightening properties. The most effective ingredients to help prevent premature skin sagging includes retinol, peptides, vitamin C, and niacinamide. These ingredients can help stimulate collagen production, improve skin elasticity, and reduce the appearance of sagging. Incorporate facial massage into your daily routine Gentle facial massage techniques can help improve circulation and lymphatic drainage, promoting firmer, glowy and more lifted skin over time. Because it stimulates the facial muscles, a massage is like a mini-workout for your face. It engorges the muscles with blood to oxygenate the skin cells and gives “tone” to your muscles.Incorporate a gentle facial massage using your fingertips or a jade roller into your daily skincare routine. To learn more about the many benefits of facial massage click here Get enough zzzz’s We all know that getting enough sleep is important for our overall health, but did you know it can also improve your skin’s elasticity? Skin Cycling: What is it and how will it improve your skin?

by Jo Boyden on Apr 19 2024
Ever wondered how some people seem to effortlessly maintain glowing, radiant skin? Well the answer could be due to skin cycling, a skincare concept that has gained huge popularity over recent months and for very good reason, after all skin cycling has the ability to transform your skin in a short period of time! If you aren’t familiar with skin cycling, you’re probably wondering how this is so, and what it even is! Keep reading as we reveal all there is to know about this skincare trend and how it may help improve your complexion too! What is skin cycling? Skin cycling is a strategic approach to your skincare routine that aims to improve results while minimising irritation. It involves alternating between using active ingredients and nourishing ingredients. Instead of bombarding your skin by applying active ingredients every single night, you cycle through them over a four-night period, enabling your skin to rest for a few nights. How does skin cycling work? While there are plenty of variations to skin cycling, a typical skin cycle lasts for four days - two days “on” (otherwise known as “active nights” using active ingredients) and two days “off” (otherwise known as “rest nights” using nourishing ingredients). The theory behind this particular trend is to give the skin a break from products such asexfoliants and retinols which can be harsh or stripping if used consecutively over a period of time. Your classic skin cycling routine The skin cycling rotation begins with exfoliation on the first night(preferably with a chemical exfoliant like lactic acid or glycolic acid), followed by retinol on the second. The third and fourth nights are dedicated to recovery with skin barrier-protecting serums and moisturisers to nurture and hydrate the skin. Then, the cycle repeats.By alternating between active and rest nights, you allow your skin to repair itself and avoid overloading it with too many actives at once. The result? Better results without the irritation! Why Skin Cycling? With so many products out there from cleansers and exfoliators to serums, oils and more, (and let’s not forget the game-changing ingredients we all need to look out for in our skincare) it’s easy to overload our skin. So many of us will layer multiple ingredients night after night without considering recovery. Skin Cycling prevents this. Using specific products on different days regenerates the skin and improves skin quality. Who will benefit from skin cycling? Anyone can! If you aren’t getting the results you want out of your skincare routine despite using products with the best skincare ingredients, skin cycling could be for you! Or ff you suffer from skin irritation, skin cycling can work wonders! It prevents you overloading your skin with multiple active ingredients day after day. By avoiding overloading the skin you’ll maintain its health, balance, and overall well-being. Remember overloading the skin with excessive skincare products and ingredients can lead to skin issues or exacerbate an already existing condition! Firstly, it can disrupt the skin barrier, compromising its ability to retain moisture and protect against external aggressors. This disruption may result in increased sensitivity, irritation, and dryness. Furthermore, overloading the skin can clog pores and contribute to acne breakouts, particularly if heavy or occlusive products are used. Finally, layering too many products may interfere with the absorption and efficacy of active ingredients, leading to diminished results. Simplifying your skincare routine can help streamline your regimen and ensure that each product effectively addresses your skin's needs. The best products to use for skin cycling?Since skin cycling is all about exfoliation and retinol followed by repair and nourishment, these are the products we would highly recommend:Days 1 & 2Vie Collection Cleansing Gel with Glycolic, Lactic and Salicylic Acids – This foaming cleansing gel combines glycolic, lactic and salicylic acids to stimulate cellular activity, break the intercellular glue between dead cells and thoroughly cleanse skin.Pevonia Renewing Glycocides Cream - Combining glycolic acid with hydration hero hyaluronic acid, this treatment cream works to dissolve dead skin cells, improving skin texture and diminishing fine lines too! Keep scrolling to find out what they are… Q: Why am I getting acne as an adult, I thought acne was for teenagers?Sadly acne isn't only reserved for awkward high school years. Several factors can contribute to acne in adults. These include;hormonal changes: This often occurs during menstruation, pregnancy, perimenopause, or menopause. Hormonal imbalances can stimulate the sebaceous glands, leading to increased oil production and breakouts.Stress: High stress levels can wreak havoc on your skin. Stress triggers the release of certain hormones, such as cortisol, which can stimulate oil production and contribute to acne. Additionally, stress may lead to unhealthy lifestyle habits, like poor sleep and an imbalanced diet, which can further exacerbate skin issues.Diet: While the link between specific foods and acne isn't universally agreed upon, some people find that certain dietary factors such as high-glycemic foods and dairy products can impact their skin and increase the risk of acne.Skincare and makeup products: The products you use on your skin could be a culprit. Some ingredients in skincare or makeup products may clog pores or irritate the skin, leading to breakouts. Ensure the products you are using are of good quality and are suitable for your specific skin type too!Environmental factors: Exposure to environmental pollutants, such as smog or certain chemicals, can contribute to skin issues. Additionally, humidity may increase the likelihood of acne. Not good news this time of year!Genetics: Your genetic makeup plays a role in your skin's characteristics including its susceptibility to acne! If your parents or close relatives had acne, you might be more prone to it as well. Thanks parents!Medications: Certain medications can have side effects that include acne. If you suspect your medication might be contributing to your acne, it's best to have a chat with your GP.Over-cleansing or products that are too harsh for your skin: Sometimes, the desire to combat acne can lead to over-cleansing or the use of products which you think will help but are in fact too harsh for your skin! This can strip the skin of its natural oils, prompting it to produce even more oil in response. More oil produced equals more breakouts! Q: Can I blame overindulging in chocolate for my breakouts?Sorry to all you chocoholics out there but the link between chocolate and acne isn’t actually crystal clear. It's more about your overall diet, which does include sugar (and dairy too) so if you’ve been hitting the cheese board like me this silly season, or indulging in too many sweet treats, this definitely could be impacting your skin. Remember everything in moderation! And instead try to indulge in foods such as almonds, blueberries and avocados as they are among a range of foods which may help to reduce and prevent inflammation. Q: How can I get rid of my pimples overnight? Some spot treatments can work wonders at reducing, and in some cases eliminating, unwanted blemishes overnight. This is because they encourage rapid healing by controlling bacteria, reducing inflammation and diminishing the follicular accumulation of keratin. For the most effective results look for spot treatments formulated with ingredients such as benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid. We highly recommend Phytomers Oligopur Blemish Target Gel as the best spot treatment! It targets blemishes with precision, rapidly improving the skin’s appearance and eliminating spots almost overnight! Simply apply a small amount of product to your pimples and let the powerful ingredients keep your skin follicles clean to achieve an even and bright complexion by morning. Q: Can following a specific skincare routine really help my acne? Absolutely! Consistency is key. A gentle cleanser, non-comedogenic moisturiser, and targeted treatments can help keep acne at bay. Also, don't forget sunscreen – it's like armour for your skin, yes even for those of us with acne! And I know it sounds counterintuitive, slathering sunscreen all over acne flareups but believe me when I say avoiding sunscreen can worsen the appearance of acne, and if the skin gets sunburnt, the symptoms of acne can be painfully exasperated.Just be sure to choose your sunscreen wisely. Using the right sunscreen can prevent and heal acne, soothe the skin, keep dark spots and clogged pores at bay, all while protecting from harmful UV rays.We love Medicalia Sunscreen SPF 40 with Blue Light Shield. Q: Can I wear makeup if I have acne prone skin?Absolutely! But you must be careful with what you use! Look for non-comedogenic, oil-free formulas. Mineral makeup can be a game-changer as it doesn’t contain any chemical nasties or additional oils, nor will it aggravate skin or clog pores. Genius! Here at BC from the staff to the experts we all love ELES Cosmetics Liquid Powder Mineral Foundation. And for more translucent coverage the ELES Mineral Foundation Powder. Both products are perfect for those with skin sensitives, are free of any chemical nasties, provide effortless and natural coverage and most importantly will allow your skin to breathe freely (so no pore clogging in sight) plus you'll feel like you aren’t wearing makeup at all! What more could you ask for?For more information on makeup for acne prone skin, including the best makeup tips click here. My pimples really need popping, is it ok to do so?No! Experts cringe at the thought of DIY extractions. Popping pimples can lead to scarring and more inflammation. Let it be, and consider a spot treatment instead. Are all pimples the same?Nope! From blackheads and whiteheads to cystic acne, the acne family can get a little confusing! And each type of pimple or acne requires a slightly different approach too! To understand more about the type of acne you could be suffering from click here. Could stress and lack of sleep being affecting my skin?Yes sir-eee. Lack of sleep and high stress levels can trigger hormonal imbalances leading to breakouts. Try to prioritise self-care, practice relaxation techniques and try to get to bed earlier if you can for ample beauty sleep. If you struggle with getting to sleep make sure you turn off devices an hour before bedtime and instead listen to some soothing sounds. We love listening to the ambient relaxation playlist on Spotify.
team BC - beauty wishlist

What the team at BC have on their beauty Wishlist this year

by Jo Boyden on Jan 12 2024
As beauty lovers, here at BC we are always on the lookout for exciting and innovative products and ingredients. Whether it’s the latest skincare launch or that limited edition makeup palette we’ve had our eye on, there is always something new to covet. Keep reading as we reveal the products team BC have on our Wishlist’s for 2024! Naturys Antiage Multi-Peptide SerumWe have kickstarted the year with a glow by adding a radiance-boosting serum to our wishlist! And what better a serum than this new one from Naturys! Experts rave about Naturys’s vegan formulations so to be honest we are excited to trial the entire collection, but this particular product was our initial pick! Formulated with hyaluronic acid, an ingredient my dry skin LOVES, this product packs a punch when it comes to hydration but thanks to its additional combination of nourishing and anti-ageing ingredients including an array of peptides and vitamin C, it promises to leave your skin softer, smoother and visibly radiant too. Now that’s what we are talking about!Pevonia De-stress Escape Aromatic OilThis is one of those products we didn’t realise we were missing from our routine until we tried it - and now we’re never going back. This nourishing facial oil is the perfect way to end the day and believe me when I say it’ll work wonders for your skin (and for your psyche too!) It features a blend of premium and delicate natural oils to effectively reduce skin dryness and dehydration while promoting a feeling of increased wellbeing and utter relaxation! Want to wake up to dewy skin in the morning then try this!ELES Youth Recovery Sheet MaskWho hasn’t tried a sheet mask, after all they’ve been a popular skincare trend for some time now and for good reason! They provide a quick, easy and refreshing boost to your skin, and this one is a top pick of ours for 2024. It’s a professional strength mask (so think results!) made with 100% pure cotton and drenched with the highest percentage of natural, active ingredients on the market for optimum results. No more tired, lacklustre skin! What’s more, the ELES sheet masks are vegan, cruelty free, fragrance free and sulphate free too! So why not add this sheet mask to your wishlist too and treat yourself and your skin to a spa day at home!Naturys Anti-Age Retinol BoosterWe could all do with retinol in our lives as our skin gets older! After all, when it comes to reducing the visible signs of ageing, retinol is the “super-ingredient” every beauty professional hails as the holy grail of the skincare world! Why? Because it offers a multitude of benefits; From reducing the appearance of fine lines and preventing wrinkles, to correcting hyperpigmentation, reducing large pores and clearing acne. Retinol also has the ability to speed cell turnover making cells function like that of a child!Want to know our favourite vegan-friendly retinol serum right now? And top of our wishlish for 2024? It's this beauty! The new Naturys Anti-Age Retinol Booster! This retinol serum is also formulated with bakuchiol, and both ingredients work together to effectively enrich skin with a microdose of daily regenerating strength! The formulation also visibly reduces the signs of time, improves texture and tones skin.Concerned about giving retinol a go? Don’t be, you just need to know how to use your retinol products correctly! For more information on retinol click here.ELES Age Defying BB CreamWe're yet to recommend these multi-purpose creams to someone who doesn't fall in love with them as much as us! Your moisturiser, primer, sunscreen and foundation in one, the ELES Age-Defying BB cream SPF 30 is a multi-tasking makeup miracle, suitable for all skin types! A big call I know, but it’s not BC’s best-seller for nothing! This BB Cream primes, tints, nourishes, protects, blurs and evens out your skin tone for a truly, natural, flawless finish. And thanks to its skin-loving ingredients including Vitamin E, Goji berry, Squalane; its multi-mineral complex, and age defying peptides, over time it will help to promote cell health, strengthen elasticity, reduce the appearance of fine lines and restore that natural glow you once donned! What’s more, you’ll feel as though you aren’t even wearing makeup, no easy feat for a foundation or any product with SPF for that matter!Pevonia C Complex with OxyzomesAsk anyone with beautifully radiant skin what their secret is and they’ll likely tell you they’re using Vitamin C! Recommended by every beauty expert, Vitamin C is THE go-to ingredient to dramatically brighten skin, that’s why this Pevonia beauty is on our wishlist! It is a-mazing for that perfect pick-me-up. Vitamin C and hydration hero hyaluronic acid, work together to quite literally drench skin with repairing antioxidants, deeply nourishing skin while correcting photo-damage. Not only does it have the most beautiful citrus aroma, when applied, skin looks instantly brighter and dewier too!ELES Dual Action ConcealerDark under eye circles appears to be a problem for the majority of us here at BC and this concealer is a must-have for covering up those dark circles as well as blemishes and imperfections. It's creamy, blendable, and has the ultimate natural-looking finish. It’s also an anti-ageing concealer rich in marine collagen, caffeine, vitamin C, vitamin E, hyaluronic acid and peptides which help to gradually improve skin's texture, depuff, smooth, brighten and improve elasticity around the eyes.Medicalia Sunscreen SPF40 with Blue Light ShieldIf you’re going to invest in one product that’s going to save you money in the long run, it has to be an SPF. While sunscreen won’t just help future-proof your face by slowing down the signs of ageing, there’s also not much point investing in other skincare products if you don’t have the fundamentals of your skincare routine down pat. This one is a firm favourite on our wishlist thanks to its hydrating properties that allow us to wear it as a moisturiser/sunscreen hybrid on lazy days without leaving any white cast or oily residue. Also, did we mention it sits perfectly under makeup. What’s more it helps protect skin from not only UV rays but also blue light damage caused by our devices, which so many of us spend far too long in front of every day. Blue light from electronics is linked to a number of issues, from digital eye damage, to sleep deprivation (and lack of sleep never did anyone any good) and then there is the adverse effect it has on our skin! Why spend all that time, energy and money on skincare only to have the good undone by our devices? As quickly as a collagen cream can replenish our skin and soften fine lines and wrinkles, overexposure to “screen time” can actually prompt the formation of free radicals which break down collagen causing fine lines and wrinkles! And that’s not all! Excessive blue light can cause inflammation, leading to redness and dark spots, as well as hyperpigmentation, particularly in those with darker skin.Let’s face it though, we aren’t going to give up scrolling on our phone or our love of Netflix at night, nor can those of us who work, simply shutdown our laptops and say no more! But what we can do is use Medicalias sunscreen SPF 40 with blue light shield. The beauty wishlist is a testament to our never-ending love affair with all things skincare and makeup! It’s a collection of our most coveted products that we can’t wait to incorporate into our daily routines if we haven’t already. Whether it’s the promise of glowing skin or a perfectly natural and flawless makeup routine, these products are on our beauty wishlists for very good reason.

Dark circles: 12 tips to reduce them

Dark circles: 13 tips to reduce them

by Jo Boyden on Dec 07 2023
Dark undereye circles, who hasn’t woken up many a morning to those frustrating, unwanted rings under their eyes! This common skin concern is in fact a persistent complaint for many, woman and men, but what exactly causes them and is it possible to reduce or even get rid of dark circles all together? In short, Yes! And we are here to tell you how. Keep reading as we explain what dark circles actually are, as well as reveal the best methods to bid farewell to those pesky shadows and restore a bright, refreshed appearance to your delicate eye area. What causes dark circles? Before diving into solutions to get rid of those dark circles of yours, it's important to understand what it is that actually causes them.As we get older, our skin becomes thinner. This is the result of a decrease in fat and collagen production (which maintains our skin’s elasticity) As this occurs, the dark blood vessels beneath our skin become more visible, causing the area below our eyes to darken.Dark under eye circles can also be the cause of lack of sleep (which unfortunately increases with age too!) as well as dehydration, allergies, poor blood circulation and insufficient toxin drainage! How to get rid of dark circles Get your beauty sleep! One of the most common contributors to dark circles is lack of sleep so you need to ensure you are getting enough beauty slumber! Without it the oxygen in the eyes decreases which makes blood vessels dilate. Deoxygenating or dilated blood vessels become darker in colour and show more readily through the skin. This, in turn, causes dark circles!Try to aim for 7-9 hours per night and establish a consistent sleep routine, this means going to bed at a reasonable time and trying to stick with that time every night. Also consider using blackout curtains to create a dark and conducive sleeping environment. Keep hydrated Dehydration can exacerbate the appearance of dark circles, so make sure you're keeping hydrated. Set yourself a goal of eight glasses of water a day, more if possible, to keep your skin and body sufficiently hydrated. I personally love herbal teas too as a good alternative. Prop yourself up at night Easier said than done but propping yourself on a few pillows might not be comfortable for all, but by elevating your head with a couple of extra pillows can prevent fluid from collecting under your eyes at night. This may also help with puffiness. Use a cold compress You can effectively constrict blood vessels, as well as reduce puffiness with a cold compress. Whether it's applying chilled cucumber, metal spoons or a cold tea bag to each eye, the coolness can help diminish the appearance of dark circles. Really! Give yourself a mini facial massage with a gemstone facial roller By doing so you’ll help improve circulation, and remove toxins from the delicate eye area, significantly improving dark circles and under eye bags. Giving yourself a mini facial massage will also reduce inflammation, refresh the skin and tone your face! In fact gemstone rollers offer a multitude of other benefits for your skin too. Click here to find out more. Invest in an eye cream or eye gel specifically formulated to target dark circles Look for ingredients such as vitamin C, retinol, hyaluronic acid, and peptides, which can help brighten the under-eye area and promote collagen production. We love;Vie Collection Chrono Eyes Puffiness – Dark Circles Wrinkle CreamThis outstanding eye cream draws its inspiration from the eye rejuvenating hyaluronic acid injections carried out in aesthetic doctors practices! It’s suitable for everyone, even those with super sensitive eyes and it does exactly what the bottle says! It attacks puffiness, dark circles and wrinkles with a powerful burst of encapsulated high molecular weight hyaluronic acid, injectables-like peptide, fatty acids, vitamin c and niacinamide for exceptional results. Medicalia Eye Gel Oxy CThis little beauty is formulated with clever time-release sphérulites drenched with Hyaluronic Acid; stabilized Vitamin C; and Marine Collagen Peptides and is effective at eliminating dark circles as it alleviates eye contour stress and fatigue. Genius! Pevonia’s C Evolutive Eye GelFor mornings when your eyes are looking dark and puffy, reaching for this cooling eye gel will do wonders for reviving this delectate area!  it’s a personal favourite of mine and highly recommended by the BC Pros. It’s a wonderful, cooling gel, formulated with anti-ageing dynamo Vitamin C, skin saviours’ hyaluronic acid and Ginkgo biloba, as well as green coffee to effectively smooth wrinkles which radically reducing dark circles and puffiness. I can hand on heart vouch for this! Also by using a tapping motion with your finger which you apply it can help get rid of any fluid that’s accumulated under the delicate eye area. Reduce screen time Yes, we know you are guilty of scrolling your phone once too often during the day, or sitting for hours in the zone watching your favourite Netflix show by night, but did you know the blue light rays omitted from your devices can actually exacerbate dark circles. So try to cut down a little on screen time or give your eyes constant breaks throughout the day. Adjust your diet a diet that lacks a high level of healthy nutrients can contribute to your dark circles. So make sure you eat foods rich in vitamin E which can help to fight enzymes that break down skin elasticity. Vitamin E also fights free radicals which causes wrinkles and ageing. It also helps to remove blemishes and dark circles. Foods like almond, peanuts, sunflower seeds, spinach, and broccoli are good! Cut down on caffeine I’m sure many of us love our daily coffee, some will be reliant on more than one, but the bad news is, caffeine or caffeinated drinks cause dehydration that worsens under-eye rings so try to cut down on the caffeine intake a little if you are noticing dark circles are becoming a reoccurrence. Stress less Yes that’s right, stress is a contributor to those dark circles of yours! So try to stress less! Easier said than done when you are trying to juggle so many balls, however, try to introduce a little me time into your life, time for you to relax and unwind. Read a book perhaps, listen to soothing music or even practice yoga or meditation every day. Every little helps you and those dark circles of yours! Be aware of how much alcohol you are consuming Alcohol consumption affects our appearance and our eyes so try to drink a little less! We are not saying you need to forgo your much loved glass of wine, what we are saying is everything in moderation. Don’t over expose your eyes to sun! This can definitely affect your eyes! Instead always protect your peepers from the sun by wearing sunglasses and opt for a protective hat too! Use a good concealer! When it comes to camouflaging dark under eye circles, a concealer is by far your best bet. A good undereye concealer can give you complete coverage as well as make you look bright-eyed in seconds! Choose a shade lighter than your natural skin tone (as this will help brighten the area) but also opt for a “peachy” tone as this will counteract the blueish tinge of the shadows.Try ELES Dual Action Concealer. This is my personal secret weapon for concealing my dark under eye circles and helping me look like I’ve had 8 hours of blissful slumber as opposed to only 5! It’s formulated with a myriad of anti-ageing wonder ingredients including Hyaluronic acid, Caffeine, Vitamins C & E, Collagen and more! And it actually helps to gradually improve skin’s texture while concealing those obvious under eye dark circles. Its moisturising formula provides continuous hydration as well as a natural longwearing finish meaning it lasts for hours without seeping into fine lines and wrinkles! It’s seriously good stuff. Simply apply with a small concealer brush and then finish with a powder to set the concealer so it doesn’t crease. For the most brightening effect, apply your concealer in a “V” or upside-down triangle shape beneath your eye. Swipe it directly under the eye, but bring it down to a point on your cheek beside your nostril and fill in the entire area.
Clear skin? 10 steps to reduce acne

Clear skin? 10 steps to reduce acne

by Jo Boyden on Nov 09 2023
Whether you are battling occasional breakouts or dealing with persistent acne, we understand how frustrating having problematic skin can be, especially when all you want is a clear glowing complexion, is that really too much to ask? While acne is a common skin concern, it doesn’t mean you can’t take steps to radically reduce it! Keep reading as we reveal our 10 top tips… Cleanse twice daily Start your skincare routine with a gentle cleanser to remove dirt, excess oil, and impurities from your skin. Be sure to cleanse both morning and night, but we picky with what products you use. You don’t want to choose a harsh cleaner that’ll strip your skin of its natural oils as this can lead to an increase in oil production and in turn more potential breakouts! Eek. You want to look for gentle formulations rich in ingredients such as salicylic acid or lactic acid as they can help prevent the buildup of sebum (which can contribute to acne.)Try Medicalia Clarifying Cleanser. With a balanced blend of lactic and salicylic acid the gentle cleanser works quickly and effectively to eliminate toxins, impurities, surface bacteria, and make-up. It’s ideal for inflamed, sensitive, acne prone and oily skin types.“I have problem skin & after using this product my face is clear & people have commented on the changes.” Laurie Exfoliate weekly, but be sure to be gentle Incorporating a mild exfoliant into your skincare routine can do wonders in the fight against acne. Exfoliating will help to remove any dead skin cells sitting on the surface of your skin which can clog pores and lead to breakouts!Just remember over exfoliating can have the adverse effect and actually irritate your skin so make sure to exfoliate just once a week to start and use a gentle exfoliator.Try Phytomer’s Vegetal Exfoliant with Natural Enzymes. It’s a soft exfoliant for even the most sensitive or rosacea prone skin and uses natural enzymes to encourage cell turnover without scrubbing or irritating your skin.“Gentle on the skin and worked well even for my acne prone skin.” OliveIf you do love a granular scrub though opt for a gentle version like Pevonia’s Gentle Exfoliating Cleanser.Formulated with jojoba beads, Saponaria and chamomile,it gently polishes skin with its unique creamy, granular texture, removing dead skin cells, impurities and toxins to reveal instant radiance and softer, smoother skin too! With no moisture at all, your skin would become dehydrated and begin to over-compensate by producing more oil! Something you definitely don’t need when it comes to oily, blemish and acne prone skin!Instead look for lightweight, oil-free moisturisers that won’t feel heavy on your skin.Try: Phytomer Acnipur Blemish Solution Fluid. This lightweight gel-cream works amazingly on problematic skin reducing overall breakoutsThe formula also helps eliminate shine for a clean, matte complexion. With regular use, this acne treatment not only helps diminish the appearance of existing blemishes, but it prevents future breakouts too!“This fluid is almost like a serum but lighter in texture. I use it after I wash my face morning and night. I have noticed a reduction in breakouts on my skin and also a more mattifying appearance on my skin”. Alyssa Spot treat with care For targeted acne treatment, use spot treatments. These can help reduce inflammation and kill acne-causing bacteria. Remember to use them sparingly and only on active breakouts to avoid drying out your skin.Try: Phytomer’s’ Oligopur Blemish Target Gel, it’s a phenomenal spot treatment which targets blemishes with precision, rapidly improving the skin’s appearance and eliminating spots almost overnight! Simply apply a small amount of product to your pimple and let the powerful ingredients keep your skin follicles clean to achieve an even and bright complexion. This is the best product to fight pimples! I couldn't get my chin to clear up and w/in a few days of using phytomer my chin was clear again! Joanne Never skip on sunscreen Some acne treatments can make your skin more sensitive to the sun, so protecting your skin is crucial to prevent post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation and sun damage. The Sun, heat and humidity can also cause oil glands to become overactive, which in turn can lead to acne breakouts! To prevent these breakouts choose and oil-free, non-comedogenic sunscreen and apply it liberally daily! Be aware of what you are eating What you eat can have a huge impact your skin's health so it’s imperative if you are suffering from acne to Incorporate a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, and limit your intake of processed foods and sugary treats. Consuming foods high in antioxidants and vitamins can help promote clear, radiant skin too!Try;Fatty fish such as salmon and tunaYellow and orange fruits and vegetables such as carrots, apricots, and sweet potatoesSpinach, kale and other dark green and leafy vegetablesTomatoesBlueberriesAvocadoswhole-wheat breadbrown ricequinoaSoybeans Reduce your stress levels Sounds easier said than done I know, we all have those days, weeks, months even where we are super stressed but said stress can lead to acne flare ups! This is because stress-related hormone CRH can bind to receptors in the skin’s sebaceous glands, increasing oil production. Excess oil production can then cause pimples. So, if you keep breaking out and just can’t understand why, stress might be to blame, so try to relax!Try; listening to relaxation music or meditate. Also, something as simple as taking a relaxing bubble bath every evening can really help. Exercise is also imperative! While exercising will increase blood flow, helping nourish skin cells and keeping them vital, it has also been accountable for reducing stress-related acne. Keep your phone clean! And your pillowcase too! Yup, a sudden breakout can be from something as simple as your phone or pillowcase (well anything that touches your face really that could be hosts for harmful bacteria!) And anytime you hold your phone to your face or lie on your pillowcase you are spreading the bacteria to your skin. So, if you haven’t done so for a while, try sanitizing your phone screen and wash that pillowcase of yours more often, it could make a big difference to your skin. Hydrate inside and out We all need to stay hydrated every single day, after all our bodies can’t operate effectively without water, but when I say stay hydrated, I mean drive plenty of water and drink it throughout the day, 8 glasses minimum!Hydration is key to maintaining healthy skin as it helps flush out toxins and keeps your skin looking plump and radiant. Lactic Acid

Say goodbye to dull skin: How Lactic Acid revives your glow

by Jo Boyden on Oct 19 2023
If you've been on a quest to transform your dull skin into a gorgeously glowing complexion but have yet to see results, it could be due to the skincare products you are using. When it comes to reviving your skin's radiance you need to make sure you are using products rich in certain essential ingredients. We all know that vitamin C has the ability to dramatically brighten your complexion, but if you really want to achieve that much coveted healthy skin glow, the secret weapon so many of us aren’t familiar with is Lactic Acid. What is Lactic Acid?Don’t let the word acid scare you! Yes, lactic acid is an alpha hydroxy acid (AHA), but this potent ingredient is derived from milk and is one of the gentlest AHAs there is. In fact, lactic acid is suitable for dry and sensitive skin.A natural exfoliant, lactic acid can breathe life into your lacklustre complexion. It works by dissolving the bonds that hold dead skin cells together, revealing the fresh, radiant skin underneath, the reason why it’s a favourite among those looking for a gentle yet effective exfoliation solution. Why your skin will love lactic acidLactic acid is a multitasker, here’s how it works it magic!Exfoliation without irritationLactic acid gently exfoliates the top layer of your skin, unclogging pores and sloughing away dead skin cells sitting on your skins surface. The result? Smoother, brighter skin without the redness and irritation that some other exfoliants can cause.Boosts hydrationUnlike some exfoliants that can leave your skin feeling stripped and dry, lactic acid actually has a moisturizing effect. It helps your skin retain moisture, which is key for maintaining a healthy glow.Fades dark spotsWhether you're dealing with sun spots, age spots, or post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, Lactic Acid is a hero at fading these pesky dark spots and promoting a more even skin tone.Softens fine linesReady for a little wrinkle-smoothing action? Another impressive feat of lactic acid is its ability to stimulate collagen production, helping to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, giving your skin a plumper, more youthful look. How to incorporate lactic acid into your skincare routineReady to add this skin-loving ingredient to your skincare routine? Here's how:Choose wiselyLook for lactic acid in the form of serums, toners, or moisturisers. Pick products that suit your skin type and concerns.Patch testAs with any new skincare product, especially one with active ingredients, it's a good idea to do a patch test before slathering it all over your face. Apply a small amount to a small area of your skin to make sure your skin agrees with it.Start slowlyIf you're new to lactic acid, start with a lower concentration and gradually work your way up. This gives your skin time to adjust and reduces the risk of irritation.Use at nightSince lactic acid can make your skin a bit more sensitive to the sun, it's best to use it at night. Make sure to follow up with a good sunscreen during the day to protect your newly revitalized skin.Follow up with hydrationAfter using lactic acid, be sure to hydrate your skin with a nourishing moisturiser to keep it plump and supple. Our favourite products rich in lactic acidPhytomer Emergence Even Skin Tone Refining SerumInfused with both lactic acid and glycolic acid, this lightweight serum is a must for reducing the appearance of uneven pigmentation, acne, enlarged pores and dark spots.Medicalia Clarifying CleanserWith a balanced blend of lactic and salicylic acid the gentle cleanser works quickly and effectively to eliminate toxins, impurities, surface bacteria, and make-up. It’s ideal for inflamed, sensitive, acne prone and oily skin types.Medicalia L Retinol Smoothing CreamThe ultimate anti-ageing night cream, Medicalia's L Retinol Smoothing Cream is a must have for photodamaged skin. Formulated with micro-retinol®, glycolic, and lactic acid, it effectively lightens, brightens and smooths skin. Lacid acid is indeed a game-changer when it comes to your skin. Its ability to gently exfoliate, brighten and hydrate the skin makes it a must have for anyone looking to revive their natural glow. By incorporating lactic acid into your routine a few times a week, you'll be amazed at the transformation, trust me!
under eye crepiness

Top tips to improve under eye crepiness

by Jo Boyden on Sep 01 2023
If like me, you’re in your 40’s (or older), you may have fallen victim to under eye crepiness – that undesirable loose, wrinkled skin that can make you look tired, but also older than you actually are! This is because as we age the collagen and elastin levels in our skin starts to decline, as it does the delicate skin around our eyes (one of the first and most prevalent areas to show premature ageing) becomes dryer and thinner, and well crepey! Luckily all is not lost though! There are a number of steps you can take to improve its appearance, and we aren’t talking chemical peels, dermal fillers, laser and Botox, no siree, we are all about natural, non-intrusive alternatives. Keep reading as we reveal them all!Firstly though, why might you be more susceptible to under eye crepiness? The most common cause of fine lines, wrinkles and crepey skin under your eyes is unfortunately ageing, which can of course be influenced by genetics (thank you Mum and Dad!) But other common contributing factors which may be possible to avoid include;UV radiation – exposure to UV rays accelerates the breakdown of collagen leading to premature ageing, this is why it’s essential to protect our peepers! If you don’t wear sunnies every single day like you do your sunscreen, you should now!Smoking – smoking exposures your skin to extra oxidative stress, in turn damaging its collagen and elastin. Smoking also constricts the blood vessels under your eyes by blocking circulation to your blood vessels and depriving your skin of necessary vitamin A.Environmental factors - environmental factors, such as dry weather, wind, and pollution can all contribute to undereye ageing.Pulling repetitive expressions – well I’m definitely guilty of this! Facial expressions, like smiling, frowning, and furrowing your brow, can cause fine lines to develop prematurely around your delicate eye area. Eek!Even the way we sleep can have a negative impact on our eyes! What you might say? Yup, if you sleep with your face buried in your pillow (guilty as charged) you are likely to be more prone to premature fine lines, wrinkles and eye crepiness, than those that don’t! Aghhh. How can you improve undereye crepiness?Although crepey skin will not disappear overnight, it can be drastically improved with time, the right anti-aging products, as well as lifestyle changes. It can take weeks or even months to see results, but by following these top 10 tips you can bid adieu to that saggy, sullen, crepey skin under your eyes. Stay hydrated. All. The. Time. Yes, you’ve heard it a million times before, drink all the water. Hydration is key my friends. Make sure you are drinking enough water throughout the day (we’re talking 8 glasses minimum). When you drink water, it’s like giving your skin a drink from the inside out too (and that water has to nourish all your other vital organise too! Treat sunscreen like is your BFF Never underestimate the power of sunscreen. Those harmful UV rays are a major contributor to premature aging. So, slather on that sunscreen every morning, even on cloudy days. Your future self will thank you!Not a huge fan of sunscreen? We get it. Soo many sunscreens feel greasy, don’t smell great or simply don’t sit well on our skin, and then there are those thick white sunscreens that look like a paste when applied too! That’s why we love the ELES Luminous Defence Brightening Day Protection SPF 50. It’s not greasy but instead silky soft, the scent isn’t unpleasant, and it applies beautifully to my skin. And thanks to its formulation its helps nourish and restore skins luminosity too, not to mention it’s high SPF of 50! Invest in an eye cream rich in hyaluronic acid and use it day and night Investing in a good quality eye cream that's packed with hydrating and skin-loving ingredients including hyaluronic acid and peptides will do wonders for ageing eyes. Gently pat the product around your eyes morning and night for that extra boost of moisture and optimal results. For more on the benefits of using hyaluronic acid under your eyes and our 3 favourite eye treatments click here. Add a gemstone facial roller to your daily beauty routine The roller will, not only help reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles around the eyes, when used correctly, it can dramatically reduce puffiness by moving excess fluid around your eyes towards your lymph nodes where it filters out the toxins too. Cool right? To find out more about the facial rollers and how to use them click here. Introduce tea time for your eyes Tea isn’t just for drinking you know, it’s also good for soothing your eyes too! Try placing cold tea bags (caffeine free, herbal tea is best!) on your closed eyes for a few minutes. The tannins in tea can help tighten the skin and reduce puffiness too! Consider practicing eye massage Light massage with your ring finger can improve bloody circulation and actually help your skin appear smoother. Remember gentle, gentle though as applying too much pressure to already thin, delicate skin can have the adverse effect! Give your eyes a rest from screen time Increased time in front of your laptop and on your phone can reap havoc with your precious peepers. In fact, spending just two consecutive hours on a digital device can cause eyestrain or fatigue while overexposure to blue light also suppresses the release of melatonin, the hormone that regulates sleep, therefore disrupting our normal sleep pattern. And we all know poor sleep can lead to premature ageing, especially around the delicate eye area! Make healthy lifestyle choices Your overall health reflects on your skin, including the delicate eye area. Eat a balanced diet rich in antioxidants, vitamins, and omega-3 fatty acids. And if you're a smoker, consider kicking the habit – smoking accelerates skin aging like nobody's business. Using gentle cleansing is a must Be kind to your skin when you cleanse but also never skip on cleansing, it’s a must, just be sure to use a gentle, hydrating cleanser that doesn't strip away your skin's natural oils. Harsh cleansers can contribute to dryness and crepiness. Try Medicalia’s Gentle Cleanser. Introduce cold compress magic Incorporate cold compresses into your routine. Applying a cold, damp cloth or chilled spoons over your eyes for a few minutes can help reduce puffiness and refresh your skin. Keep skin hydrated Invest in a good hydrating mist. A quick spritz throughout the day can give your skin the moisture it craves, helping to minimize crepiness. We love Pevonia’s Hyaluronic Acid Hydra Mist. It’s one of my all time favourites. Make sure you get enough Zzzz’s Beauty sleep is real people! After all it’s not dubbed beauty sleep for nothing! Make sure you're getting enough restful sleep each night. Elevate your head slightly with an extra pillow to prevent fluid from pooling around your eyes, which can lead to puffiness and crepiness. Upgrade your pillow case If you are one for sleeping with your face in the pillow, you might want to consider switching up your cotton pillowcase to a silk or satin alternative instead.Silk has natural moisturising properties to retain moisture around the eyes. The dense weave of the silky-smooth fibres also keep moisture close to your skin, this extra moisture can help to reduce dark circles, fine lines and wrinkles.Just remember, Rome wasn’t built in day, and your under-eye skin won’t transform overnight either sadly (if only!) Be patient and be religious with these steps and you’ll be waking up to smoother, brighter and younger looking eyes soon!
face mapping - woman checking her pimples and breakouts

Breakouts? Why you’re getting reoccurring pimples

by Jo Boyden on Jun 02 2023
I’m pretty certain when I say, we’ve likely all suffered from pimples many a time in our lives, and just when you think they are behind you, you suddenly get another bout of unwanted blemishes! Pimples are actually a very common skin concern for people of all ages and skin types. But have you ever wondered why those pesky pimples keep cropping up, even when we are in our 40’s, 50’s and older even? And often in specific areas of our face too! Maybe you tend to get them around your chin more? Or on your nose or forehead perhaps?Well, according to the ancient Chinese practice of face mapping, the location of your pimples can actually tell you a lot about your overall health. That’s right dependant on where your pimples are appearing on your face, they can actually mean different things, from digestive issues to hormonal fluctuation. Keep reading to learn all about the importance of face mapping, so next time you get an outbreak you’ll know what the cause may be and how you can help to fix it. Firstly though, what is face mapping?Face mapping is an ancient Chinese and Ayurvedic practice that links different “zones” of the face (eg cheeks, chin, forehead) to different organs or glands in the body. The theory is that when there is an imbalance or toxicity in the body (in one of the different organs), it can manifest as pimples in the corresponding zone on the face. What are the different zones and what do pimples in these areas mean? The foreheadIf you often find yourself battling pimples in this area, it could be an indicator of digestive issues. Take a closer look at your diet, up the fibre and make sure you're staying hydrated too. Cutting back on alcohol, sugar and processed foods and incorporating more fruits and veggies could help clear up those forehead blemishes. Be sure to chew food well and take probiotics too.Between the browsBlemishes between the brows can be the sign of an overloaded liver. Liver issues can be indicative of sleep deprivation, heightened emotions (stress, sadness, anger, worry), or an excess of sugar, fats or alcohol in your diet. Your lymphatic circulation may also be stagnant and could use a little boost so try starting your morning with a hot water with lemon, drink plenty of fluids throughout the day, decrease your intake of spicy foods, alcohol, dairy, and sorry to say it, coffee too! And up the essential fatty acids, omega 3 and 6 in your diet, avocado and olive oil on your salad will help. Finally rest up, like you, your liver needs plenty of time to rest and recuperate.TemplesThe corners of the forehead, by the temples represent the kidneys.Lack of sleep, a poor diet and dehydration impacts our kidney function. Another factor may be a mineral deficiency, specifically iron too. To help, take proactive steps to support the kidneys, including decreasing stress, consuming enough fluids (spring water, coconut water, herbal tea, hydrolytes!), making sure you get enough sleep, also be mindful of your diet (eat ample amounts of fruits and vegetables and try to stay away from too much sodium.CheeksIf you notice pimples frequently appearing on your cheeks, it could indicate respiratory issues or allergies, since this area is linked to your lungs. The most common food triggers are dairy, soy, gluten, processed sugar and alcohol – try to eliminate these groups for a month to see how your body reacts with the change and replace with leafy green goodness. Also, pay attention to the air quality in your environment, as pollutants can wreak havoc on your skin.JawlineBreakouts in this area are often linked to hormonal fluctuations, particularly in women. It's not uncommon to experience these pimples around your menstrual cycle. However, persistent acne along the jawline might also be connected to polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) or digestive problems so you might want to get a blood test so that your doctor can get a better understanding of your hormonal levels. This will also help to determine how well your thyroid is functioning too.If you find you do get hormonal breakouts, there are many things you can do to help. Try eliminating caffeine (ok this might be a big ask, so at least try to cut it down), as well as cutting out processed sugar, dried fruit, bread, wine, diary, white flour, gluten, soy, fried foods, peanut butter and fruits like grapes and bananas (high sugar content). Eating a diet rich in omega-3 foods will instead be very beneficial, as will managing stress levels. Taking vitamin D3 supplements and getting regular exercise and adequate sleep can work wonders for bringing your hormones back to their natural balance as well!ChinIf you are prone to pimples on your chin, it could be related to your stomach. Just be sure to step up your fibre intake, avoid hydrogenated fats and processed sugar and try to be vigilant with the times you eat (no eating dinner just before bedtime!)NoseGetting pimples on your nose can be linked to your heart and can sometimes indicate high blood pressure, so get your blood pressure checked if you’re concerned. Look into ways of lowering your cholesterol too like replacing “bad fats” with “good fats” such as Omegas 3 and 6 found in nuts, avocados, fish and flax seed. You may also have a Vitamin B deficiency so consider a vitamin supplement and try to avoid spicy foods.Tip: Massage the area around your nose to improve circulation. While face mapping can provide insights into your pimples underlying causes, it’s essential to adopt some general habits for maintaining healthy skin too. Here are a few tips to get you started: Keep skin beautifully cleansed If we don’t cleanse (and exfoliate) out skin our pores can become clogged with dead skin cells, excess oil and dirt. When a pore gets clogged, it provides the perfect environment for bacteria to thrive and pimples to form! So be sure to keep your face clean by washing it twice a day with a gentle cleanser suitable for your skin type and exfoliate at least once a week. Adopt healthy skincare habits Your skincare routine and habits can play a significant role in the appearance of pimples. Harsh or irritating products can disrupt the skin’s natural balance, leading to inflammation and breakouts. While cleansing and exfoliating is imperative, over-washing or over-exfoliating can strip away essential oils, prompting your skin to produce more sebum as a defence mechanism. Use natural products free of harsh irritants and adopt a healthy daily skincare routine. Don’t pick or squeeze your pimples! As tempting as it may be, avoid picking or popping your pimples, as it can lead to scarring and more breakouts. Eat a balanced diet Studies suggest there is a link between diet and pimples. Consuming sugary and processed foods may increase insulin levels, leading to increased sebum production and acne formation. Additionally, dairy products and foods rich in saturated fats have also been associated with blemish breakouts. Therefore maintaining a balanced diet rich in an array of colourful fruits and veggies can promote overall skin health. Stay hydrated Drink enough water (and herbal tea) consistency throughout the day to keep skin hydrated and flush out those unwanted toxins. Manage stress Stress can be a big indicator of unwanted breakouts. Try and find ways to manage stress. Exercise daily, even if only for a brisk walk, practice meditation, indulge in a good book, relax and listen to your favourite music or simply engage in activities you enjoy that allow you to switch off from stress. Get enough sleep I know we say this time and time again, and I need to practice what I preach, but sleep is SO important, it’s the second most important thing after water. Sleep is not only a time for our body to recoup, but the time that our skin repairs and regenerates too. So as hard as it may be sometimes or impossible if you have a heavy workload, try and put that laptop down, turn off the TV or stop scrolling through Facebook for an evening, and get that quality sleep your body needs and deserves. Just remember your face is a little like a mirror reflecting what’s going on inside your body! By understanding the principles of face mapping you can get a better understanding of your overall health! By paying attention to the specific location of your pimples, you can address any underlying issues. Remember clear skin is not just about how you care for it topically, it’s about nourishing from within too!Want to learn more about the type of pimples you have and how to treat them? Click here. 9 beauty products we are loving this month

by Jo Boyden on May 17 2023
Even though I’m blessed to be able to try many skincare and makeup products working at BC, I do have my favourite beauty buys, the ones I literally can’t live without now, but for this blog I decided to turn to my colleagues to see what their latest skincare and makeup obsessions are too. Here you’ll find our reviews on the best beauty products that launched this year, as well as the products we’ve rediscovered and fallen back in love with. Phytomer Hydra Continue Radiance Energising Cream“There are a few moisturisers that I simply love and have been in my beauty bag for a long while now, but this cream is the one I can’t get enough of at the moment. It’s a very light moisturiser but seems to offer my dull, thirsty skin just the right amount of moisture it needs. I also love how it not only nourishes my skin but makes it feel calm and soothed too. What’s more, after every use, my skin not only looks and feels beautifully dewy and rejuvenated but it looks visibly radiant too! And bonus - it’s packed to the brim with vitamins and marine ingredients. Outstanding stuff!” Jo Boyden, Marketing, PR & Content ManagerELES Luminous Defence Brightening Day Protection 50+ “If you are concerned about ageing, there are two essentials you need in your skincare routine – SPF and retinol. In fact if you don’t use SPF, using anti-ageing skincare is a waste of time! This is because UV radiation causes skin damage, premature ageing and of course as we all know, increases the risk of skin cancer. But finding a sunscreen with a high SPF that we love and are happy to use every day can be tricky, because sunscreens can be greasy, the smell can be overbearing, or sometimes the last thing you want is to lather a thick paste on your face! But when we launched ELES Luminous Defence Brightening Day Protection I knew I’d found my go-to. I apply it every morning without fail, all year round. It's super light-weight and full of great ingredients that not only protect my skin but prevent hyper-pigmentation and dehydration too. It also gives me a bit of glow which is a bonus.” Liane Scior, Director of Education & MarketingMedicalia Retinol Concentrate“This is my other go to at the moment. I wear it under my moisturiser and apply before bed. It’s packed with a clinically proven blend of peptides, antioxidants and retinol that actively work while you sleep so you wake up to your glowiest skin yet. The more I use it, the more supple and smooth and youthful my skin feels. I have also noticed a dramatic reduction in my pigmentation and fine lines and wrinkles. This is actually one of those products that even skin professionals, and skin sceptics will tell you is worth the investment.I highly recommend using it in combination with Medicalia Retinol and ‘C’ Care Cream.” Liane Scior, Director of Education & MarketingELES Age Defying BB Cream 30“I love the convenience of this product and wear it whether working in the office, hanging out at home or heading out. Its my primer, sunscreen and foundation in one and because it’s so lightweight and silky soft on application you really don’t feel like you are wearing makeup! I also love how it’s packed with anti-ageing and skin nurturing ingredients so it’s doing good for my skin as opposed to just concealing it! If you are looking for multi-tasking makeup that’ll leave your skin looking flawless and glowy (with a subtle matte finish) this could be your new go-to.” May Scior, Operations AssistantPhytomer Rosee Soin Radiance Replenishing Oil“This oil is amazing and the perfect luxurious treat for your skin at the end of a long day. It is an extremely hydrating yet dry oil that absorbs into my skin quickly creating a beautifully velvety finish but without the greasy residue that so many night oils can leave. And thanks to it’s divine, soothing rose scent every night I use it, it transports me into a totally relaxed state and the next morning I wake to brighter, smoother and revitalised skin, no word of a lie.Honestly if you dealing with dehydrated, dull or sensitive skin even, I couldn’t recommend this product more highly!” Taryn Gray, Brand Co-ordinatorMicro Emulsion Massage Oil Anti Stress“This is my winter go-to and has been for many years. So now the temperature is dropping, it’s out of the cupboard and back in my daily routine once again. I use it as a nourishing body cream/oil especially if I take hot showers as this rehydrates and softens my skin, and when I find the time, I pour it into the bath as a nourishing milk bath, to relinquish pent up tension and fatigue. It was also the perfect product to use during pregnancy as it helped prevent any stretchmarks from forming! Even though it’s an oil, it’s doesn’t remain greasy and the scent is like you have just walked into a day spa. Bliss.” Kellie Deveney, International Educator and Business Development ManagerCleanRefresh Foaming Oil Cleanser“We all know it’s important to cleanse our skin every day, so I’ve tried rather a few cleansers in my time, but this one is THE best cleanser I have ever used.It has a gel-like texture but as soon as you add water it foams up beautifully on my face, which I love as it feels like it’s really purifying my skin and removing the day's grime and makeup. Plus it leaves my skin feeling really clean, super smooth and not dry at all (which many foaming cleansers can do). What’s more, since I’ve been using it my skin has been smoother and blemish free.” Elaine Palapag, Social Media Co-ordinator Pevonia Hyaluronic Acid Hydra Mist“I love, love, LOVE this mist! I was lucky enough to trial it before we launched it on BC and it’s quickly become a must-have in my everyday skincare routine. I’ve never been one for face mists, but this is next level. I use it first thing in the morning to revitalise my skin and replenish it with any moisture that’s been lost overnight, then again after I’ve applied my makeup as it’s an awesome setting spray, I then spritz it on my face throughout the day when my skin needs a pick-me-up, which I find is essential when I’m in the office with the heating pumping, and then again at night after I’ve applied my serum and moisturiser to finish off the perfect night routine. Not only does it make my skin feel super moist and dewy but it really does awaken my senses too.N.B Since it’s formulated with not only Hyaluronic Acid, but a blend of ultra-calming Chamomile, Aloe, Green Tea and aromatic essential oils too, it makes this powerhouse product ideal for all skin types, especially dehydrated, irritated, and ageing skin!” Taryn Gray, Brand Co-ordinatorPhytomer Night Recharge Youth-Enhancing Cream“I LOVE night creams, the silkier and richer the better I say and having tried many night creams in my time working in the industry, this is definitely one of the best night creams in for any skin care routine, hands down (big call I know!) Its texture is like silk, and it literally melts into skin as soon as you apply, cocooning it in nourishing hydration (so my skin gets all the benefits of this cream’s marine botanicals while I sleep!) The next morning my skin is literally glowing and smooth as a baby’s bottom! OBSESSED.” Jo Boyden, Marketing, PR & Content Manager And there you have it! Our top 8 beauty products that have captured our hearts and skin! and made it into our daily beauty routines this month. Whether you are looking to fight signs of ageing, achieve a radiant complexion, or simply pamper your skin, BC has something for everyone. The biggest beauty trends for 2023 revealed

by Jo Boyden on Jan 20 2023
From cloud skin to cloudless skin, glass skin and skin slugging, we’ve seen a lot of beauty trends come and some go over the last few years, but now we’re bringing to you some of the latest beauty trends predicted to be all the rage this year! Read on as we reveal everything you need to know about the 2023 trends we are loving and are sure you will too! Ceramides to lead the tideIt’s not new, 2022 in fact saw an increase in ceramide rich skincare products, but this super ingredient, which has been the underdog until now, is predicted to hit a new high this year! Why? Because after years of exfoliating acids and anti-ageing retinol, it’s time to reduce skin sensitivities and build up our skin barrier, and ceramides do exactly this! They support a healthy barrier all whilst securing hydration to our skin. Plus, combining ceramides with other nourishing and skin nurturing ingredients such as fatty acids, hyaluronic acid, probiotics and niacinamide leads to intense hydration and optimum skin health.Try;[caption id="attachment_3555" align="aligncenter" width="200"] Ageless Skin Collagen Mask[/caption][caption id="attachment_4722" align="aligncenter" width="200"] CleanRefresh™ Foaming Cleanser[/caption][caption id="attachment_4497" align="aligncenter" width="180"] Pevonia Marine Collagen Cream[/caption]Hyper-glowing skinWhen is glowing skin not in? A look we all want to achieve on the daily I’m sure, however this year’s rendition sees glow-getting skincare coupled with the right highlighter to create almost mirror-like skin. Bronzers will take a small step back as the focus no longer falls on contouring, but high shine. It’s all about hydrating and brightening ingredients to create this much-loved trend. We’re talking skincare enriched with hyaluronic acid and vitamin C.Skincare & Makeup hybridsSkincare and makeup hybrids, otherwise known as ‘skincare makeup’ as we like to call it at BC, isn’t exactly new, but this year the industry is ramping up awareness as we focus heavily on skin health not just skin’s appearance. Makeup products are better than ever as they are designed to not only conceal imperfections but actually improve them too. 2023 will see us taking extra steps to protect our skin starting by allowing it to breathe freely even when wearing layers of makeup – makeup formulated with the best skincare ingredients from hyaluronic acid to vitamin c, collagen, ceramides and more!Try;[caption id="attachment_4108" align="aligncenter" width="250"] Baked Finishing Powder in Diffused Light[/caption] [caption id="attachment_4068" align="aligncenter" width="200"] Retexturizing Face Primer[/caption][caption id="attachment_4686" align="aligncenter" width="250"] ELES Age-Defying BB Cream[/caption]Au Naturale / Barefaced beautyWho doesn’t love a natural look when you are using miracle makeup to hide those flaws! Well this year is predicted to see a big focus around barefaced beauty, not a new trend we know but this year’s interpretation is all about letting your skin breath freely but without having to go makeup free! Base makeup will see a shift from heavier matte foundations to tinted SPF’s, tinted moisturisers, and bb creams, enhanced by highlighters, blush and bronzer to sculpt and define features. Finish the look with subtle dewy lips.Try;[caption id="attachment_4363" align="aligncenter" width="200"] Sunscreen SPF 40 with Blue Light Shield[/caption][caption id="attachment_4587" align="aligncenter" width="200"] ELES Mineral Sheer Tint SPF 20[/caption][caption id="attachment_4747" align="aligncenter" width="200"] Vitaminic Concentrate[/caption]Vinyl lipsThis year sees the move away from matte mouths to satin, glossy and shiny luscious lips. We’re talking a level of gleam glam we haven’t seen before! Lips like latex in bold bright shades.Body beautifyingEverything we’re doing for our face, from masks to serums, exfoliation to sculpting, we’ll be doing for our body this year! it’s time to treat the skin on your body just as well as the skin on your face. We’ve moved further than a body lotion or oils, though to full body exfoliation, body contouring and body sculpting.[caption id="attachment_6184" align="aligncenter" width="200"] Phytomer Morpho Designer - Contouring Crystal Emulsion 150ml[/caption][caption id="attachment_6185" align="aligncenter" width="200"] Pevonia Stem Cells Body Corrector[/caption][caption id="attachment_6186" align="aligncenter" width="200"] Phytomer Celluli Night Coach Intensive Cellulite Sleeping Mask[/caption]

AHAs, BHAs and your skin: Everything you need to know

by Jo Boyden on Dec 15 2022
If you are a lover of skincare, you’ve likely heard of AHA and BHAs, but do you know what it is they actually are, what they can do for your skin or what the difference between these exfoliating acids really are? Keep reading for everything you need to know about BHA, AHAs and your skin. What are AHAs and how do they work?AHAs, or otherwise known as Alpha Hydroxy Acids, are water-soluble acids derived from fruits and plants. They’re considered a chemical exfoliant, which means that they use chemicals — aka acids or enzymes — to buff away dead skin cells. The most common AHA’s in skincare are glycolic acid, lactic acid, citric acid and malic acid and they are typically found in cleansers and exfoliators but can sometimes feature in masks, serums and moisturisers too!AHAs work by breaking down the ‘glue’ that binds dead skin cells to the skin. Because they have a large molecule size, they primarily work on the top layers of the skin, making them particularly beneficial for those with dry, dehydrated or hyperpigmented skin. By removing dead and dry skin cells, AHAs smooth skin texture, brighten skin tone, fade pigmentation, and can also reduce the chance of breakouts from occurring! What are BHA’s and how do they work? The most well-known BHA is salicylic acid – chances are you’ll have heard of this one if you have breakout-prone skin, since it’s found in many spot treatments.Like AHAs, BHAs also work by breaking down the ‘glue’ that binds dull, dead skin to the surface, however they work on a much deeper level than AHAs, penetrating deep into the pores, unclogging and removing dead skin cells, excess sebum and congestion. This is because BHAs are oil-soluble, making them an effective treatment for oily, breakout and acne-prone skin. Because BHAs can penetrate so deep, removing both dead skin cells and excess oil (which when combined can clog pores and lead to breakouts) they are an effective whitehead and blackhead buster. BHAs also act as an anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory, so they work to kill acne-causing bacteria and reduce the redness and swelling of spots too. What is the difference between AHA’s and BHA’s?Although both of these ingredients are exfoliating acids and work to improve the appearance of skin by exfoliating it, they actually work in different ways. AHA’s work to break down the glue that holds dead skin cells together while BHA’s go deeper into the pores to remove dirt and oil.Are AHAs and BHAs good for all skin types? If you have oily and blemish prone skin, you’re best to choose skincare products formulated with BHA’s. If your skin tends to be on the dry, dehydrated side, AHA’s should be your go to.While these acids can dramatically improve the appearance of your skin, it’s important to remember that both AHAs and BHAs are active ingredients which (if overused) can impact your skin’s natural barrier, cause irritation, and increase skin’s UV sensitivity. For this reason, it’s essential to understand how to use acids properly, what to do if you over exfoliate your skin, and the best AHA and BHA skincare for your skin type. How to use AHA’s and BHA’s properlyAs with most skincare ingredients, especially exfoliants, AHAs and BHAs have their downsides, including possible sun sensitivity, peeling and itching, so you need to be sure not to overuse any products formulated with AHAs and BHA’s and be extra diligent about slathering on your sunscreen…daily, all year round! Before you incorporate AHA and/or BHA products into your daily skincare routine, you need to consider the other skincare products you are using, paying close attention to the ingredient list to avoid irritation since AHAs and BHA’s might not be compatible with them. It is best to steer clear of your retinol cream or serum on a day you are using AHA and BHA rich skincare as the combination may cause excessive skin sensitivity, irritation, and redness. On the other hand AHAs and BHAs can be mixed with moisturizing ingredients like hyaluronic acid, ceramides, to get effective and long lasting results.AHAs and BHAs themselves can be combined. However AHAs such as glycolic acid, tend to be best for dry, dehydrated skin and surface-level skin concerns like acne scaring, whereas BHAs such as salicylic acid, are best for oily, blemish, and acne-prone skin types. You can use both by including skincare products which contain both ingredients, or by alternating your products. Try these AHA skincare favourites;Pevonia Renewing Glycocides CreamIf your skin is looking a tad dull and devitalised and you’re forever coveting that ‘insta-glow’, this product is your answer! Formulated with most renowned AHA glycolic acid combined with hydration hero Hyaluronic Acid, it works to dissolve dead skin cells, improving skin texture and diminishing fine lines too! Skin resurfaces soother, brighter and younger…seriously.Phytomer Emergence Even Skin Tone Refining SerumThis lightweight, refining face serum formulated with a powerful AHA formulation, visibly reduces the appearances of imperfections. It diminishes the appearance of uneven pigmentation, acne, enlarged pores and dark spots! Try these BHA skincare favourites;Medicalia Clarifying CleanserRich in BHA Salicylic Acid, this cleanser works quickly to eliminate toxins, impurities, surface bacteria, makeup and oil to reveal clearer, brighter skin. How to get rid of acne: 5 steps to pimple free skin

by Jo Boyden on Sep 29 2022
You might well have suffered from acne when you were younger, or perhaps you were just prone to the occasional pimple, but why oh why years later are you still getting these darn spots you might be wondering?Acne, or ‘adult acne’ as it’s more commonly known once you approach or 40’s or 50’s, is actually a very common skin condition that affects not only teenagers but men and woman of all ages! In fact, there is no age limit! Why? Because acne, whether it presents as whiteheads, pimples, blackheads or cysts, occurs when your skin follicles become blocked with oil and dead skin cells. Something that is very easily done, but also something that can be prevented when you follow a few simple steps. So, if you are suddenly finding yourself with a face full of pimples, keep reading as we explain the best ways to get rid of them and how you can stay pimple free too! Watch what you eat As good a staple as it can be, dairy in your daily diet can sadly lead to an increase in acne breakouts. Try cutting it out to see if it could be causing your breakouts to occur. Also cut down on the amount of sugar and caffeine you consume!Instead indulge in foods such as almonds, blueberries, avocados and kidney beans as they are among a range of foods which may help to reduce and prevent inflammation. Stress less Sounds easier said than done I know, we all have those days, weeks, months even where we are super stressed but said stress can lead to acne flare ups! This is because stress-related hormone CRH can bind to receptors in the skin's sebaceous glands, increasing oil production. Excess oil production can then cause pimples. So, if you keep breaking out and just can't understand why, stress might be to blame, so try to relax!Try listening to relaxation music or meditate. Use mineral makeup Makeup can be a real trigger for pesky pimples. Especially if it’s full of pore clogging ingredients and oils. If you have acne, you are likely going to want to try and conceal it without exacerbating the condition, this is where mineral makeup will become your best friend! Each product in the ELES Mineral Makeup range is free of skin irritants and pore clogging nasties and instead are rich in skin nourishing and nurturing ingredients that will not only allow skin to breathe freely but will help to improve its condition too!Our favourite? The ELES best-selling Liquid Powder Mineral Foundation. But if you love powder, the Mineral Powder Foundation is pretty outstanding too, especially if your skin is a little on the sensitive side. Choose skincare wisely You might well love your moisturiser but if it’s too rich for your skin it could well be doing more bad than good. Choosing skincare specifically designed to counteract acne is imperative. You want to make sure your products are formulated with acne-fighting ingredients including powerhouse salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide. This is because salicylic acid dissolves the bonds that hold dull, dead skin cells on the surface of the skin so the skin will gently shed, revealing smoother, brighter skin underneath, while super ingredient Benzoyl peroxide is helpful for treating acne not only because it kills bacteria that contribute to acne, but because it helps prevent and clear out clogged pores too!Try;Medicalia Clarifying CleanserThe key to fighting persistent breakouts is to find a high-impact cleansing product that will help to clear up your skin while thoroughly cleaning it.Formulated with both lactic and salicylic acids to deeply penetrate pores, remove dead skin cells, and eliminate toxins, surface bacteria, and makeup, Medicalia’s Clarifying Cleanser is a must! It provides skin with a super gentle lather that won’t dry out the skin like some acne treatments do!Pevonia Soothing Propolis ConcentrateIf you’re a sufferer of reactive, sensitive or acne prone skin a soothing serum could be your new go-to if it’s not already! Pevonia’s Soothing Propolis Concentrate is a beautiful rich gel-like serum with anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and antioxidant properties! It combines calming lavender, vetiver oil and a high concentration of healing propolis from the Jura Mountains of France to desensitize, decongest, heal, strengthen, and really enrich skin! Outstanding stuff!Pevonia Problematic Skincare Cream You might be thinking that applying a moisturiser is counterintuitive if you have acne prone skin? After all you’d do everything in your power to keep oiliness away right? The thing is not all acne-prone skin is oily, in fact, dry skin, normal skin, sensitive skin, basically any skin can be prone to breakouts as well! Whatever your skin, moisturising is an essential step in every skincare routine, after all they protect the skin’s barrier function and can even help soothe and prevent acne if done correctly. The experts at BC can’t get enough of Pevonia’s Problematic Skincare Cream rich in Glycolic Acid. It works amazingly on problematic skin reducing overall breakouts while leaving your complexion soft, supple and pores clog-free!Phytomer Oligopur Blemish Target GelWhen a pimple rears its head, a potent spot correction treatment will encourage rapid healing by controlling bacteria, reducing inflammation, and diminishing the follicular accumulation of keratin. Try Phytomer’s’ Oligopur Blemish Target Gel, it’s a phenomenal spot treatment which targets blemishes with precision, rapidly improving the skin’s appearance and eliminating spots almost overnight! Simply apply a small amount of product to your pimple and let the powerful ingredients keep your skin follicles clean to achieve an even and bright complexion.

5 products to best treat dark spots

by Jo Boyden on Sep 22 2022
We might well be lucky to live in a country known for its breathtaking beaches, beautiful bushland and endless summer sun (well the latter could be debatable right now!) but unfortunately growing up in Australia can reap havoc on our skin, and as we age hyperpigmentation can start to form.Otherwise known as dark spots, age spots, sunspots and uneven skin tone, hyperpigmentation is a very common skin condition, especially in warmer climates. Why? Because it is mainly triggered by overexposure to the sun. UV light speeds up the production of melanin, a natural pigment that gives our skin its colour. On skin that has had years of sun exposure, hyperpigmentation appears when melanin becomes clumped or is produced in high concentrations. What’s worse, these dark spots are then typically perceived as ‘aged skin’ and can in turn make you look 10 years older. Eek!The phenomenon affects both men and women and can occur in all skin tones and types. Unfortunately, sun exposure isn’t the only trigger though! Other triggering factors include genetics, pregnancy, the use of photo-sensitizing products, medication, lifestyle choices, acne and scarring and hormonal changes! So, what exactly is the solution? How do we prevent these dark spots from forming? Or if we are already suffering from hyperpigmentation what are the best treatments to get rid of it?While there is no quick fix to eliminate this condition, there are definitely methods you can take to help dark spots fade.Firstly though, wearing sunscreen daily, all year round is essential. Studies have shown that sunscreen by itself will not only help prevent dark spots from forming but can help in preventing the exacerbation of already existing hyperpigmentation.Secondly during the year, especially at the change of season, it’s best to use skincare products that inhibit the overproduction of melanin. MILIA: What are they and how do you get rid of them?

by Jo Boyden on Sep 16 2022
UPDATED If you’re currently experiencing small, whitish bumps on your face, mainly on your cheeks, nose or around your eye area, you could be suffering from milia. Also known as ‘milk spots’ (although nothing to do with the amount of milk you’ve been consuming!), milia, while commonly associated with newborn babies, can frequently occur in adults too. They are often mistaken for whiteheads but are in fact keratin-filled cysts that form under the skin. Keratin? (You might be thinking since it’s likely you associate this protein with haircare) helps form our hair and nails but also makes up our skin’s outermost layer too! The problem is when keratin builds up, it hardens and becomes trapped which is when milia are formed.Fortunately, there are a number of steps we can take to get rid of milia, as well as prevent them from returning too! Firstly, though it’s important to understand what causes milia as well as the two main types you could currently be experiencing. What causes milia?Your body naturally gets rid of dead skin cells by shedding them to make room for new cells to grow and take their place. When the dead skins cells don’t naturally expel, they can get trapped underneath the new cells, they then harden and turn into cysts. What are the two main types of milia? Primary Milia These are small cysts that most commonly occur around the eye area due to skincare used in this area not penetrating properly. Unlike skin on the rest of the face, the eye area has limited blood circulation to filter excess oil – therefore eye creams need to be very lightweight and easily absorbed.Primary milia can also be found on your forehead and cheeks. Secondary Milia Although they look similar to primary milia, secondary milia develops when something clogs the sweat ducts. This is usually caused by some kind of skin trauma or infection, (such as laser treatments or chemical peels or even cold sores), or contributing lifestyle factors, including lack of sleep, smoking, poor personal hygiene, using oil-based beauty products in excess, and long-term steroid use. What are the best milia treatment options?First up, forget squeezing. Remember milia are not whiteheads (although you shouldn’t squeeze any spots really!) they are instead stubborn cysts so squeezing (whether it be with your bare fingers, nails or any tools!) will only irritate and cause damage to the skin and without being able to remove the problem! Instead, you are best to wait it out (yes milia can simply disappear on their own but this can take TIME) or you can take the pro route – milia removal. This usually requires an incision, especially when the cysts are deep below the skin’s surface, typically, it’s a quick and painless in-clinic procedure. Depending on the dermatologist or skin expert, they should be able to get rid of the milia using a lancing tool or needle. They will gently flick up the outer most surface of skin freeing the milia and enabling it wiggle it out like a tiny chalk ball. Sounds horribly satisfying! How can you prevent milia from returning? As ever with skincare, prevention is better than cure (there’s no needles involved, for one), so try these suggestions if milia are a recurring concern for you. Cleanse thoroughly every day Removing your make-up thoroughly before bed is essential, and if you’re not already try double cleansing in the evenings, particularly if you wear heavy make-up and/or live in a polluted area. The first cleanse removes your make-up, SPF and sebum (use something like an oil cleanser to melt make-up, we recommend the ELES Transformation Oil Cleanser), and the second – which is where your facial massage comes into play – should remove any further impurities and treat the skin. We love Pevonia’s CleanRefresh Foaming Cleanser. Exfoliate skin with the best acid exfoliators (formulated with AHA and BHA’s) Regular exfoliation works wonders in preventing milia, in fact the most effective way to keep milia at bay is to encourage cell turn over! Look exfoliators formulated with glycolic acid and salicylic acid. Apply at least three times a week, paying special attention to areas of milia. Try: Pevonia Glycocides Cream or Vie Collection Glyco 10 on freshly cleansed skin in the evening. You won’t be disappointed! If you have sensitive skin, or prefer manual exfoliation, try using a gentle scrub a few times a week such as the Phytomer Marine Scrub or Pevonia Gentle Exfoliating Cleanser. This way you’ll keep the dead skin cell build-up at bay and your pores tight and clean. Use a retinol cream Retinol is also very helpful for both fighting and preventing milia. This form of vitamin A assists skin cell turn over, allowing the milia to surface and preventing the build-up of dead cells leading to the cysts in the first place. Try: Pevonia Micro Retinol Serum and Pevonia Micro Retinol Cream or Vie Collection Retinopur Fluid. Choose your eye cream carefully Skin under the eyes can be prone to puffiness if fluid builds up there, especially with aesthetic interventions which limit muscle movements [such as Botox] and lymph circulation. This, coupled with rich products loaded onto the thin skin with limited blood circulation is a recipe for clogging. Therefore, it’s vital to use lightweight eye creams, and ensure they penetrate effectively. Try: Pevonia “C” Evolutive Eye Gel or Vie Collection Chrono Eyes puffiness dark circles. Wear sunscreen religiously! While this is already a must to reduce the risk of premature ageing, sun damage can also be a contributing factor of secondary milia. Also make sure you wear a hat, and sunglasses. Consider making some lifestyle changes Limit your intake of cholesterol-rich foods (meat, eggs, etc) and instead stock up on good sources of essential fatty acids such as oily fish, flax seeds, olive oil (unheated), avocados and linseeds. Incorporate vitamin D supplements into your daily routine and avoid heavy oil-based skincare or make-up products. Instead opt for mineral makeup which will allow skin to breath freely.
