The best retinol alternatives for sensitive skin

The best retinol alternatives for sensitive skin

by Jo Boyden on Apr 16 2025
Retinol is often hailed as the holy grail of anti-ageing skincare, known for its powerful ability to boost collagen, smooth wrinkles, even out skin tone and more! But for those with sensitive skin, the idea of applying retinol, especially when you’ve heard how it can cause irritation, seems nothing short of silly, after all, why would you want to exacerbate your already delicate complexion right?  While I’m personally an advocate for retinol (and I have fairly dehydrated and sensitive skin myself), I am here to tell you there are some amazing retinol alternatives that offer similar smoothing, brightening and collagen boosting results, without the irritation! From the best ingredients to expert approved products, keep reading to find out what will work for your sensitive skin.   1. Bakuchiol – the “natural retinol alternative” Derived from the Psoralea corylifolia (Babchi) plant, this powerhouse ingredient has been gaining serious attention for its ability to mimic the effects of retinol, without the irritation! Like with retinol, bakuchiol boosts collagen production to effectively reduce line lines and wrinkles, it also fights hyperpigmentation for a more even skin tone and provides antioxidant protection supporting a healthy skin barrier. What makes it great for sensitive skin types though is it’s gentle and non-irritating! Unlike retinol, bakuchiol doesn’t increase sun sensitivity, meaning you can use it morning and night without worrying about extra SPF protection (though SPF is always a must in the mornings of course!). We love the Vegan friendly Naturys Anti-age No Age Fluid Cream! As well as bakuchiol it’s enriched with peptides and hyaluronic acid which work together to provide skin with intense hydration while soothing, toning and plumping!  2. Niacinamide – The skin-smoothing superstar Also known as vitamin B3, niacinamide, like retinol, is a skincare multitasker! It helps even out skin tone, brighten the complexion, minimise pores, reduce redness, and support the skin’s barrier! And the best part? It’s one of the most well-tolerated skincare ingredients out there, making it ideal for anyone dealing with breakouts, rosacea, sensitive, dry or reactive skin really! Niacinamide is also a great team player, meaning you can pair it with other gentle actives like hyaluronic acid, ceramides, or peptides to boost your results without irritation. Vie Collection Serum De Vie – High Performance Youth Concentrate is a fantastic way to incorporate niacinamide into your routine. This multi-tasking and richly hydrating serum works at a cellular level to protect skin cells and restore a more youthful appearance. An EGF-like peptide enhances cell division to smooth wrinkles, while niacinamide slows the transfer of melanin to key parts of your skin to fade the look of dark spots. 3. Tranexamic Acid: The skin soothing and smoothing solution Another fantastic alternative to retinol, especially for those with sensitive skin or concerns like hyperpigmentation and redness, this powerhouse ingredient is gentle yet highly effective! While it doesn’t offer the same collagen-boosting benefits as retinol and a few of the other ingredients, its excellent in other ways that make it a strong contender for those seeking gentle yet effective skincare results. It works by reducing melanin production, helping to fade dark spots, sun damage, and melasma. Its anti-inflammatory properties also calm redness and irritation, making it ideal for rosacea or reactive skin types. Unlike retinol, it won’t cause peeling or sensitivity, making it a safe, daily-use option. So if you’re looking to brighten and even your complexion without irritation, tranexamic acid is a go-to choice! Try Hubislab Derma Max Brightening Clinic. This deeply moisturising night cream formulated with tranexamic acid, antioxidants and vitamins, nourishes the skin whilst soothing irritation, improving elasticity, correcting pigmentation and brightening the complexion all whilst you sleep! 4. Madecassoside (Centella Asiatica/Cica Extract): The skin regenerator Madecassoside, also derived from Centella Asiatica, helps repair and regenerate the skin. It possesses strong anti-inflammatory properties that help control excessive sebum and soothe and calm irritated skin, making it effective in treating conditions like eczema and psoriasis. Madecassoside also aids in collagen production, promoting skin firmness and elasticity. Its antioxidant properties help protect the skin from environmental damage and premature ageing. This ingredient supports wound healing by stimulating cell regeneration and improving circulation. Overall, Madecassoside is valued in skincare for its ability to enhance skin barrier function, reduce redness, and restore a healthier, more radiant complexion. We highly recommend: Hubislab Premium Active Eternal Face & Eye Cream. Packed with a plethora of goodies from madecassoside and Hyaluronic Acid to peptides and a Botulinum-derived component (an ingredient that is similar to Botox) This 2-in-1 – moisturiser and eye cream is nourishing but perfectly light and promises to improve wrinkles and skin texture while strengthening skin and providing face-lifting effects! We are also obsessed with the entire new Phytomer Cica collection! 5. Peptides: The Gentle Firming Agents Peptides are short chains of amino acids that help rebuild collagen and improve skin elasticity, making them a great anti-ageing alternative to retinol. Unlike retinol, peptides don’t cause dryness, redness, or peeling, making them ideal for delicate complexions. They also help improve skin barrier function, reduce inflammation, and smooth fine lines and wrinkles over time. Plus, peptides are versatile and can be safely combined with other skincare ingredients, making them a gentle yet powerful option for achieving firmer, healthier-looking skin. There are so many peptides rich products we could recommend but one of our collective firm favourites when it comes to sensitive skin is Hubislab Premium Active Revival Essence. This beautiful silky soft bio serum is not only rich in peptides, but it’s formulated with hydrolysed collagen, asiaticoside and madecassoside too! Calming and soothing it delivers deep, long-lasting moisture and softer, smoother, younger looking skin! If you’re simply too scared to try retinol, or if you’ve given it a red hot go but found it too harsh, these alternatives can deliver real results without the redness and peeling! And if you aren’t totally averse to giving retinol a go but want to find a solution for your sensitive skin, we can’t recommend more highly the Pevonia Micro Retinol Line. It’s encapsulated and buffered with peptides and botanicals, making it a tolerable retinol option for sensitive skin types, you just need to transition slowly. Breaking out at 40 and beyond? How to fight adult acne

Breaking out at 40 and beyond? How to fight adult acne

by Jo Boyden on Mar 14 2025
Waking to breakouts when you thought acne was behind you? Feeling frustrated but not sure what to do? Believe it or not, adult acne is more common than you think, and it can be just as frustrating, if not more, than those pesky teenage pimples we all endured! From hormonal changes and stress to skincare mistakes and environmental factors, there are a number of reasons why blemishes can return in adulthood. The good news? With the right targeted skincare routine and lifestyle changes, you can achieve clear skin once again! Keep reading as we discuss what’s causing your breakouts and, more importantly, our expert approved tips and solutions on how to treat them!   Why you’re getting breakouts - the most common triggers for adult acne Unfortunately, adult acne can be caused by a number of factors, often different from the breakouts we experienced in our teens, so it’s important to try and identify your specific root cause. Everything from hormonal imbalances, stress, diet, and even the medication you might be taking can contribute to your breakouts. Here are the most common triggers:  1. Hormonal Imbalances If you are experiencing blemishes and acne in your 40’s and 50’s, chances are it could be to do with perimenopause and the menopause. And if you had a history of pimples and acne as a teenager, you’ll more likely to be susceptible to getting acne flare ups now too! Unfortunately, fluctuations in our hormones, particularly androgens (like testosterone), can increase oil production, this excess oil can then mix with bacteria, dead skin and debris leading to clogged pores and breakouts! This is why acne also often flares up around the menstrual cycle, and during pregnancy, as well as due to conditions like polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). 2. Stress When you're stressed, your body produces more cortisol, which can stimulate oil glands and worsen acne. Stress-induced inflammation can also slow healing, making breakouts last longer. 3. Skincare & Makeup products Using the wrong skincare or makeup or simply overloading your skin with it, can clog pores and trigger breakouts. Too many products, as well as heavy, oil-based, or comedogenic products can worsen acne, while harsh cleansers can strip your skin and in turn cause it to go into overdrive and overproduce oil, which is where the cycle comes into play!  4. Diet Some studies suggest that high-glycemic foods (like white bread, potatoes, rice, cereals), dairy, and processed sugars can trigger acne by increasing inflammation and oil production so if you are ingesting much of these foods it could be one reason for your increased blemishes! 5. Lifestyle It can be hard to get that 8-9 hours of sleep a night believe me! But lack of sleep, as well as other lifestyle choices like smoking and drinking alcohol and sugary drinks can and will affect your skin in one way or another and it’s usually through the increase in blemishes. 6. Environmental Factors Pollution, sweat, and even your phone screen or pillowcase can harbor bacteria that contribute to breakouts. Regularly cleaning your phone and changing pillowcases can help reduce bacteria exposure. 6. Medications Certain medications, including steroids, birth control pills, and antidepressants, can disrupt hormones or increase oil production, leading to breakouts. 7. Over-Exfoliating or Harsh Skincare Too much exfoliation or harsh acne treatments can strip the skin’s natural barrier, leading to more oil production and irritation, making acne worse instead of better!   How to treat breakouts and adult acne 1. Cleanse gently (but effectively!) Many people with acne-prone skin make the mistake of over-cleansing or using harsh scrubs, which can strip the skin and lead to even more breakouts. Instead, opt for a gentle cleanser with acne-fighting ingredients like salicylic acid. We highly recommend Hubislab A.C Clearing Purifying Cleansing Gel. It’s a soothing gel-based cleanser which has been especially formulated (salicylic acid and powerful antioxidant green tea) for congested and acne prone skin to completely but gently clear pores, removing makeup, dirt and grime from the skin without over-drying, all whilst protecting the skin against oxidative damage. 2. Don’t skimp on moisturiser It’s a common misconception that oily or acne-prone skin doesn’t need moisture! The truth is, when your skin is dehydrated it can actually produce even more oil to over compensate, leading to further breakouts, eek! You do need to be careful about the moisturisers you choose though! When looking for the best moisturisers for acne prone skin, you’ll want to choose lightweight, non-comedogenic moisturisers that hydrate without clogging pores, like the ProCorrective Clear-Control Moisturiser for balancing hydration and oil control. It’s carefully selected non-comedogenic (non-pore clogging) super skin-clearing, calming and hydrating ingredients (we are talking Zinc Chloride, Hydrolyzed Wheat Protein, Cinnamon, Thyme, Mallow, Witch Hazel, Tea Tree Extract, Niacinamide, Glycolic and Salicylic Acids, Microcitrus Australasica, a.k.a. Caviar Lime and Hyaluronic Acid!)combine to deeply target acne by rapidly clearing away blemishes and clogging, while moisturising and smoothing uneven texture. It’s so good! In fact the whole Pevonia ProCorrective line is outstanding for the management of adult acne! 3. Exfoliate regularly (but don’t overdo it!) Exfoliation is key to unclogging pores and preventing breakouts, but doing it daily can damage your skin barrier. Stick to gentle chemical exfoliants with AHAs or BHAs (like glycolic or salicylic acid) two times per week to keep your skin smooth and clear. We love Pevonia Enzymo Spherides Peeling Cream. Do not let the name ‘peeling cream’ put you off though! Papaya and Pineapple have been selected for their enzyme peeling action, an action that gently digests away impurities, sebum, toxins and the dead skin cells, instead of abrading or burning them off. So, it’s gentle, really gentle, and it’s effective too! Nothing makes skin feel cleaner, lighter or more purified than this jar of goodness and it’s easy to use! Simply apply a thin layer on cleansed skin, wet the fingertips with warm water, this will help to “wake up” the enzymes, then leave them to do their thing for 5-10 minutes, then rinse away.  4. Spot treat your skin When a breakout appears, resist the urge to squeeze it please! And yes, I know how tempting it can be, but squeezing spots can spread bacteria and exacerbate your acne! Instead, use a targeted spot treatment with ingredients like benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid, sulfur, or tea tree oil to reduce inflammation and speed up healing. 5. Manage your stress Easier said than done we know, but there are some amazing aids and coping mechanisms when it comes to stress. Try to give yourself a little “me” time. This might feel like an impossibility especially if you are a busy, working mum! But we are simply talking even a few minutes a day to soak in a bath, read your book, listen to a podcast, meditate, exercise or simply listen to music! Breathing exercises can also be game-changing and I know have seriously helped me! One of the main symptoms of perimenopause is anxiety and being in my mid 40’s I have definitely been hard hit. I find music and breathing has helped no end. I’m telling you just a little time out can make a noticeable difference in your skin’s clarity.   6. Choose your makeup wisely Heavy, oil-based foundations can clog pores and worsen acne so you’ll want to opt for non-comedogenic, breathable makeup formulas, and always remove your makeup before bed to prevent buildup and irritation! Mineral makeup is the best makeup for acne prone skin, its free from common irritants such as fragrances, preservatives, and synthetic dyes, making it less likely to cause breakouts or allergic reactions plus so many formulations are lightweight and breathable, so you literally feel like you aren’t wearing makeup (even though it will help conceal those blemishes) and will literally allow your inflamed skin to breathe and not be clogged! I know I am biased but I have been using ELES Mineral Makeup for YEARS. And I will never use anything else. I can hand on heart say their products have helped my skin, prevented me from getting spots even! I personally love the ELES Mineral Sheer Tint and ELES Mineral Powder Foundation, but the no. 1 ELES best-seller is the Liquid Powder Mineral Foundation, and the reviews speak volumes! All three products are mineral, filled to the brim with skin friendly, anti-ageing ingredients and do not ever clog pores! Brillant stuff. 7. Watch your diet If you are struggling with adult acne, you should try and cut down on high-glycemic foods which have been linked to acne flare-ups. Also try reducing your intake of processed sugars and dairy products. Instead eat a diet rich in antioxidants (like leafy greens, nuts, and berries) and healthy fats (like fish, avocado and unsalted nuts), and increase hydration to help balance skin. 8. Try to get enough sleep Sometimes getting that 7-9 hours of solid sleep a night can seem like an impossibility, I know! But sleep really is essential for skin health because it allows for cellular repair, collagen production, and hydration balance. During deep sleep, our body boosts blood flow to the skin, helping to reduce inflammation, prevent premature ageing, and promote a radiant complexion (crazy right?) 9. Stay kind to your skin and consistent with your routine From spots to adult acne, we know how frustrating breakouts can be! But constantly switching products can often make things worse! Remember to treat your skin with gentle, nourishing care and give products time to work their magic. Clear skin doesn’t happen overnight! Sticking to a consistent skincare routine with the right products for your skin type really is key to preventing breakouts in the long run.   By following these simple yet effective tips, you can take control of adult acne and enjoy a clearer, healthier complexion, we promise!
Tranexamic Acid: The best ingredient for hyperpigmentation

Tranexamic Acid: The best ingredient for hyperpigmentation

by Jo Boyden on Feb 28 2025
If you’re dealing with stubborn dark spots, uneven skin tone, or even redness, there’s a powerhouse ingredient you need to know about - tranexamic acid. While it may not be as “famous” as vitamin C or retinol, this expert-approved, skin brightener is quickly gaining a cult following for its ability to fade hyperpigmentation, calm inflammation, and even out the complexion, all without irritation! Whether you struggle with melasma, acne scars, or sun damage, tranexamic acid could be what your skincare routine has been lacking. But what exactly is it? and how does it work? Keep reading as we reveal all there is to know about this must-try skincare ingredient!   What Is Tranexamic Acid? Despite its name, tranexamic acid isn’t your typical exfoliating acid like glycolic or salicylic acid. Originally used in medicine to help with blood clotting and wound healing, this synthetic derivative of the amino acid, lysine (one of the essential amino acids) has been found to have incredible skin benefits and anti-spot properties, especially when it comes to hyperpigmentation, melasma, and post-inflammatory dark spots! Unlike stronger skin-lightening ingredients like retinol and vitamin C, tranexamic acid works gently yet effectively to inhibit melanin production and prevent the formation of darker areas, while calming inflammation, making it ideal for those with sensitive skin struggling with dark spots and redness or simply looking to brighten their complexion without irritation.   How tranexamic acid can benefit your skin Tranexamic acid is hands down the most effective ingredient of the moment when it comes to stubborn hyperpigmentation. In fact, it can benefit your skin in a number of ways; It fades hyperpigmentation and dark spots Tranexamic acid works by inhibiting melanogenesis, the process that leads to excessive production of melanin, the pigment that gives colour to your skin! This helps to prevent and fade dark spots caused by sun damage, melasma, hormonal changes or acne scars. Unlike some brightening ingredients that can be irritating, tranexamic acid is gentle and well-tolerated by most skin types. It helps to even out skin tone if you are struggling with an uneven complexion or dullness, tranexamic acid helps to create a brighter, more uniform skin tone by reducing discolouration and dullness. It effectively reduces redness and inflammation Not only does tranexamic acid target pigmentation, but it also has anti-inflammatory properties that calm redness and irritation, making it ideal for those with rosacea, sensitive skin, or post-acne marks.   How tranexamic acid works Tranexamic acid has an anti-plasmin effect. Applied to the skin, it can reduce excessive melanin production (inhibiting melanogenesis), which is generally the cause of dark spots. Currently, tranexamic acid is the only tested active ingredient that acts on three different pathways involved in the formation of dark spots; Melanin, the pigment responsible for giving colour to our skin, is produced within melanocytes. Tranexamic acid inhibits tyrosinase, an enzyme involved in melanin formation, thereby reducing the production of the pigment. Treatment of Keratinocytes Tranexamic acid inhibits the inflammatory process that accompanies the formation of spots, reducing areas with an inflammatory component (such as acne marks). Acts on blood vessels Tranexamic acid decreases vascularization in the affected area, which is crucial for treating melasma, as it has both melanin-based and vascular origins. Unlike common aesthetic treatments, tranexamic acid treats dark spots at the source. Laser treatments and peels, in fact, only remove the spot superficially but do not help prevent the appearance of new discolouration! Some spots, such as melasma, have a genetic component and can reappear over time. Regular use of tranexamic acid will not only reduce the appearance of these spots but also make the skin smoother and more even-toned.   Who Should Try Tranexamic Acid? If you’re dealing with stubborn pigmentation, dark spots, redness, or an uneven skin tone, tranexamic acid is definitely worth trying believe us! Unlike some harsher brightening ingredients, it’s a gentle, non-irritating, well-tolerated active ingredient and is safe for most skin types, including sensitive skin.   How to Use Tranexamic Acid in your daily skincare routine You’ll often find this superstar ingredient in serums, creams and spot treatments designed to target pigmentation and redness. For the best results you’ll want to use it daily morning and night, and in the morning be sure to follow with sunscreen. Since tranexamic acid works by preventing melanin overproduction, using SPF after is a must to maintain results and prevent further damage. One of the best things about tranexamic acid is that it pairs perfectly with other skincare ingredients. In fact, using tranexamic acid with vitamin C enhances the benefits of both active ingredients. While tranexamic acid works to slow down melanin production, vitamin C helps to lighten the skin and boost the brightness of the complexion. Together, they provide an effective treatment for hyperpigmentation and dark spots! And finally make sure you combine or layer it with hydrating ingredients for extra skin-soothing benefits like hyaluronic acid or niacinamide to support your skin barrier and lock in moisture.   The products Naturys Face B-Clear Serum Rich in tranexamic acid and other natural brightening botanical extracts including arbutin, betaine and shiitake mushroom, this light yet powerful organic and vegan friendly serum acts simultaneously on all mechanisms involved in hyperpigmentation, through multiple actions: it soothes, regenerates, protects and inhibits melanin precursors. It radically reduces dark spots and pigmentation while improving overall skin radiance! Hubislab Derma Max Brilliance Cream This instant brightening and whitening cream for day and night is formulated with tranexamic acid, titanium dioxide, patented whitening agent MADEWHITE and vitamin B compounds to suppress melanin formation and maintain a brightened skin tone. Rich in hydrating ingredients including Shea Butter and Macadamia Integrifolia Seed Oil, it also deeply nourishes and protects the skin with strong antibacterial action, while regulating the skin's oil-water balance for a rejuvenated, brighter complexion. Your guide to preventative ageing: How to maintain youthful skin

Your guide to preventative ageing: How to maintain youthful skin

by Jo Boyden on Feb 14 2025
We all know ageing is inevitable, but looking older before our time? That is something we can prevent! Premature ageing (we’re talking fine lines, wrinkles, loss of firmness and more) is often the result of environmental damage, bad habits and how well we care for our skin! But by making the right choices now, you can keep your skin smooth, firm and glowing for years to come, really! From powerhouse ingredients to smart daily habits, keep reading for our expert tips on how to maintain youthful skin for as long as possible! So why start worrying about your skin before it shows signs of ageing? Our skin naturally produces collagen and elastin, the two proteins responsible for keeping it plump and firm. But from our mid-20s onwards, collagen production starts to decline leading to loss of firmness, fine, lines and wrinkles. Cell turnover also starts to decrease causing dullness and uneven skin texture. To make matters worse, external aggressors such as UV exposure, pollution and oxidative stress (as well as certain lifestyle choices!) accelerate these processes by breaking down collagen and triggering inflammation. The good news is with the right skincare and lifestyle choices you can actually slow down the paging process and prevent it happening prematurely!   The non-negotiables of preventative ageing 1. SPF: Your no.1 anti-ageing essential! If you only do one thing for preventative ageing, let it be wearing sunscreen every single day, come rain, hail or shine! And yes, even when it’s cloudy too! 90% of visible ageing is actually caused by sun exposure!! Crazy right? UV rays break down collagen and elastin, leading to premature wrinkles, sunspots, and sagging skin. Just be sure to use a broad spectrum SPF 30 + and reapply every few hours if you are spending the day outdoors. And remember slather on your neck, decolletage and the often forgotten area – your hands, as these are the areas that show ageing first! Many people can’t stand the smell or consistency of sunscreen (we hear you!) or worry about what is the best option for their sensitive skin, well not all sunscreens are the same! For more on the benefit of SPF, the best sunscreens and choosing the right one for your skin click here. 2. Hydration = plump, youthful skin! Dry, dehydrated skin makes fine lines more noticeable, so you want to ensure you are hydrating your skin both inside and out daily! Make sure you try to drive your 6-8 glasses of water a day, use a hyaluronic acid serum (this will lock in moisture!) and layer your skin with a ceramide-rich moisturiser in the mornings to help strengthen your skin barrier. Honestly hydration is the key to skin looking pump and dewy! 3. Retinol - the gold standard for ageing prevention Retinol (a form of Vitamin A) really is the no. 1 ingredient when it comes to preventing premature ageing. It’s every beauty expert’s holy grail! It works by increasing cell turnover, boosting collagen and in turn keeping skin firmer, more youthful and even toned!   The thing with retinol though is it can be harsh if used incorrectly. Plus finding the right product can be imperative especially if your skin is sensitive. Just be sure to start with a low concentration, opt for encapsulated retinol as it slowly releases into the skin, reducing irritation, apply a pea-sized amount just 1-2 times a week at first and if your skin tolerates it slowly increase frequency, use it at night because it makes skin more sun sensitive and finally always follow with a moisturiser as this will help to prevent any irritation. For all you need to know about retinol click here. 4. Antioxidants – your skin’s best defence Think of antioxidants as your skin’s shield against damage from pollution, UV rays and stress. They help neutralise free radicals which break down collagen and speed up ageing! You can eat an antioxidant rich diet but also applying antioxidant ingredients directly to your skin can be game-changing. Ingredients including; Vitamin C which brightens skin and boosts collagen, Niacinamide which strengthens the skin barrier and reduces inflammation and Vitamin E which hydrates and protects against environmental damage. 5. A Strong skin barrier = slower ageing  There are many factors that can lead to our skin barrier being damaged. From excessive sun exposure and extreme weather conditions to harsh skincare and over exfoliation! And when our skin barrier is damaged, it can lead to sensitivity, redness and faster ageing. To counteract this, it’s important to look for certain ingredients when it comes to your skincare. Ingredients like ceramides, peptides and fatty acids will help your skin to stay strong and resilient! 6. Gentle Exfoliation for a radiant glow Exfoliation is another skin necessity.  This is because exfoliation removes dead skin cells, enabling new ones to come through and in turn helping skin look brighter, smoother, and more youthful. But using the wrong exfoliator for your skin type or simply overdoing it can damage the skin barrier, leading to irritation and sensitivity. Eek! So be sure you use gentle exfoliants if your skin tends to be on the more sensitive side (formulated with ingredients like lactic acid or fruit enzymes), exfoliate 2-3 times a week max (not daily!) and always follow with hydration to keep your skin balanced. 7. Don’t forget your eyes and lips! Our delicate eye area is the first place to show ageing because the skin is thinner and more delicate. Fine lines, puffiness, and dark circles can make you look older than you feel so make sure you introduce a good eye and lip cream into your daily skincare routine and be gentle with your application! 8. Prioritize your beauty sleep! Your skin repairs itself while you sleep, producing collagen and elastin to keep it firm and youthful. Poor sleep, or lack of! Leads to dullness, puffiness, and accelerated ageing so try to aim for 7–9 hours of quality sleep every night (this can be difficult we know!!) and sleeping on a silk pillowcase can really help reduce friction and prevent sleep lines. 9. A skin-boosting diet What you eat really can show on your skin! A diet rich in antioxidants, healthy fats, and hydration will help skin stay radiant and youthful. We are talking berries, leafy greens, nuts, and fatty fish! Just be sure you avoid excess sugar and processed foods as scarily they break down collagen! 10. Reduce Stress as it shows on your skin! It’s easy to say don’t stress but we all stress! I usually do daily with all that I have going on! But chronic stress unfortunately increases cortisol levels, which can break down collagen and cause wrinkles, dullness, and breakouts. So finding ways to relax can really benefit your mind, body and skin! You can try practicing meditation, yoga, or deep breathing, even taking some time out to practice self-care can make all the difference. I personally love to have a relaxing bubble bath once or twice a week (when my kids allow it!) and listening to music can help take me to my happy place! When you work out what help you unwind, try and do it daily!   When to start preventative skincare? It’s never too early to start! Most dermatologists recommend incorporating antioxidants and SPF in your 20s and retinol and peptides in your late 20s to early 30s. But no matter your age, it’s always the right time to protect and nourish your skin. Just remember though, the sooner you start protecting, hydrating, and nourishing your skin, the more youthful and radiant it will look in the years ahead.

Summer skin: 9 beauty essentials you need

Summer skin: 9 beauty essentials you need

by Jo Boyden on Dec 13 2024
Summer is here! and with it comes the sun, the sea (for some of us) outdoor adventures, and well, the inevitable battle against the heat, humidity, and sun damage, so it’s important to be armed with a few must-have beauty essentials to keep skin radiant, protected and refreshed all season long. From multitasking face products to nourishing body care, we’ve rounded up BCs best summer beauty buys to add to your summer skincare routine.   Broad-spectrum sunscreen: Your skin’s best defence The golden rule of summer skincare is sunscreen, and it should be non-negotiable. A broad-spectrum SPF 30+ sunscreen protects against both UVA and UVB rays, preventing sunburn, premature aging, and hyperpigmentation. Opt for a lightweight, non-greasy formula to avoid clogged pores. Must-Try: Hubislab Post Rays UV Protect Sun Block SPF50+ PA+++ This amazing multi-tasking sun block provides complete UV and antioxidant protection for ageing or stressed-out skin! Its non-irritating, has an SPF of 50+ and protects the skin against UV radiation, preventing dryness, dullness and signs of premature ageing including hyperpigmentation. Rich in peptides and collagen it keeps skin nourished, healthy and elastic and the invisible matte formula applies smoothly and stays on all day. With zinc oxide as its main ingredient, there is zero irritation, so it is ideal for all skin types including those with extremely sensitive and/or ageing skin. N.B Don’t forget to reapply every two hours when outdoors, especially after swimming or sweating! Lightweight moisturiser for hydration Even in humid weather, your skin needs hydration! But you need to be mindful to not overdo it on the rich, nourishing creams as these can lead to clogged pores, inflammation and even acne in some cases! Its best to switch up your moisturiser for a more lightweight, oil-free formulation to keep your skin hydrated and dewy without feeling greasy. I currently can’t get enough of Phytomer Hydracontinue Radiance Energizing Cream. Thanks to its beautifully lightweight texture, it helps keep that outer layer of skin perfectly nourished without feeling too heavy. Rich in vitamins, it revitalizes, activates your skin’s cellular activity to promote natural regrowth, hydrates, softens and smooths skin for a radiant youthful appearance.   A Brightening Vitamin C Serum In the warmer months, when the sun is shining, UVB radiation is at its strongest, so it’s important to not only prioritise SPF but Vitamin C in our skincare too! Vitamin C when applied topically not only boosts our skin’s natural tolerance to the sun, but it is able to help control the formation of pigmentation, brighten your complexion, improve the appearance of fine lines and help with collagen production too! Our skincare go-to: Pevonia Optimal C Complex It's outstanding! The citrus scent is divine and just two pumps equal radiant looking skin instantaneously. Oh, and it feels a-mazing too thanks to its combination of vitamin c and hydrating powerhouse hyaluronic which quite literally drenches skin with repairing antioxidants. Layer a few drops on your skin before moisturising. Heaven.  A cooling face mist for instant refreshment Beat the summer heat with a refreshing face mist! A refreshing facial mist is a lifesaver on hot, humid days. It hydrates your skin, sets your makeup, and can help soothe sunburned skin. Look for mists with hydrating ingredients like hyaluronic acid and aloe vera. These spritzes not only cool you down but also provide an instant hydration boost, soothe irritation, and give your skin a dewy glow. We LOVE: Pevonia’s Hyaluronic Acid HydraMist Pro Tip: Keep your mist in the fridge for an extra cooling effect!   Exfoliating Scrub for Smooth skin While sunscreen is imperative and excess oil from sweating is a given, both can do a number on your pores! Cue exfoliation. It’ll help unclog unwanted debris from pores which in turn reduces the chances of blemishes. Just be sure not to overdo it though (use once or twice weekly at the most) and it’s best to steer clear if you are sunburned and allow skin to naturally heal. Must-Try: Phytomer Cyfolia Organic Radiance Exfoliating Cream Featuring two organic gentle exfoliants – argan kernels and pomegranate seeds, combined with orange water, oligomer and Cyfolia algae, this beautifully gentle exfoliator immediately clears debris and dull, dead skin to reveal a softer, smoother and more radiant complexion.   Self-Tanner for a safe summer glow Let’s face it we all want a gorgeously golden tan but without the sun damage! This is where self-tanners are a must! They really do give you that natural sun-kissed glow without the harmful effects of UV exposure. Just be sure to steer clear of spray and mousse self-tans though as these can be slightly drying for the skin. Instead, try a nourishing self-tanning cream and choose gradual formulas for a natural finish. Must-Try: Phytomer Sun Radiance Self-Tanning Cream Its white satin texture makes it so easy to apply without leaving any streaks, it quickly absorbs into the skin and within a few hours, you’ll have the most perfect long-lasting natural tan! Result.   After sun treatment Too much sun can result in itchy, irritated or sun burnt skin. An after-sun gel is a summer essential as it soothes and hydrates skin exposed to the sun, reducing redness, inflammation, and dryness. Enriched with cooling and restorative ingredients like aloe vera and water Lily, it helps repair UV damage, prolong your tan, and keep your skin calm, refreshed, and glowing all season long. Highly recommended: Pevonia After Sun Soothing Gel It is the perfect after sun skin remedy. It is a beautifully refreshing gel which literally soothes, cools and comforts the skin immediately. Water Lily extract and proline combine to decrease skin’s temperate, gently alleviating sun sensitive skin. Rich body cream for soft, smooth skin A rich body moisturiser really is another essential go-to in summer to combat dehydration from sun exposure, heat, and frequent swimming. It replenishes lost moisture, prevents dryness, and maintains your skin’s softness and elasticity. Our favourite: Pevonia De-Ageing Body Balm Papaya Pineapple This product might carry a hefty price tag but its for very good reason! Its literally heaven in a jar. The gorgeous subtle summer scent quite literally takes you on a tropical beach escape! But more importantly it has a beautifully luxurious rich and silky texture that quite literally envelopes skin While its formulation is packed with nourishing ingredients, from microemulsified Shea Butter, to Collagen and Elastin Polypeptides, Tegospheres with Retinol, Pomegranate, and other anti-ageing tropical fruit extracts to quite literally smooth, firm, tone and brighten skin almost instantly!  Waterproof makeup for long-lasting wear Sweat and water can wreak havoc on your makeup in the summer so its best to switch to waterproof formulas for mascara, eyeliner, and long-lasting foundation formulations to keep your look intact, and introduce (if you haven’t already) a primer! You’ll wish you had earlier! Try: ELES Pore Perfecting Face Primer Humidity and hot weather tend to stimulate the production of sebum, leading to more oil on the skin! This primer not only keeps makeup in place all day long, it also combats shine, absorbs excess oil and reduces the appearance of pores to keep your foundation looking flawless! Genius!   With these 9 summer beauty essentials, you really can maintain a radiant, healthy glow while protecting your skin from the challenges of the season.
12 steps to minimise large pores: Your ultimate guide

12 steps to minimise large pores: Your ultimate guide

by Jo Boyden on Dec 06 2024
If you’re one of the many blessed with oily skin, you might find your struggling with large pores too, especially as the weather is heating up and oil production can go into overdrive! That said, large pores are one of the most common (and searched) skin concerns affecting people of all ages and skin types (not just oily skin). They can make your skin appear uneven, textured, or oily, leaving many of us wondering what exactly is causing them and how we can reduce their size stat! Keep reading as we reveal the reasons behind your large pores and, more importantly, how you can minimize their appearance with targeted products and expert tips too!   So, why do you have large pores? Believe it or not there are actually many reasons your pores might be a lot larger than you’d like! Excess oil production Pores are essential for releasing oil (sebum) to keep your skin moisturised. However, overactive sebaceous glands can cause pores to stretch, making them appear larger. Oily skin types are particularly prone to this issue. Clogged pores When oil mixes with dirt, makeup, and dead skin cells, it can clog pores, causing them to expand. This can lead to blackheads and a bumpy skin texture Loss of collagen and elastin As you age, your skin loses collagen and elastin, which are responsible for keeping it firm and tight. With less support, pores may appear more prominent. Sun damage Prolonged exposure to UV rays breaks down collagen and thickens the skin, stretching out pores over time. Genetics Yes you can thank your parents for those unruly large pores of yours! Your skin type and pore size are largely determined by your genetics. If your family has visible pores, chances are you will too. Improper skincare routine Using the wrong skincare products or skipping essential steps like cleansing can exacerbate the appearance of enlarged pores.   How to minimize large pores While you can’t actually change your pore size completely (thanks to genetics), you can take steps to minimize their appearance and achieve a smoother, healthier-looking complexion; 1. Cleanse thoroughly Keeping your pores clean really is the first step to minimising their appearance. This means using a gentle cleanser specific to your skin type both morning and night to effectively remove oil, dirt, sunscreen and makeup. If your skin is combination to oily, it’s best to opt for gel or foaming cleaners, if your skin tends to be on the sensitive side, there are some amazing sensitive skin cream cleansers for that too! Specific ingredients will make a big difference to the appearance of your pore size too. Cleansers formulated with AHA’s (Alpha Hydroxy Acids) such as Citric Acid, Glycolic Acid and Lactic Acid, and/or BHA’s (Beta Hydroxy Acids) such as Salicylic acid can make all the difference! While all four acids exfoliate on a cellular level, Glycolic, Citric and Lactic works on a more surface level to brighten and smooth your skin, whereas Salicylic Acid penetrates much deeper to effectively remove dead skin cells clogged in pores. We highly recommend Vie Collection Cleansing Gel with Glycolic, Lactic and Salicylic Acids. This foaming cleansing gel combines glycolic, lactic and salicylic acids to stimulate cellular activity, break the intercellular glue between dead cells and thoroughly cleanse skin. Remember harsh cleansers can strip your skin of its natural oils, causing your pores to become larger so do consider which cleaner is right for your skin!   2. Exfoliate Regularly When it comes to large pores, exfoliation is paramount! You want to ensure pores are unclogged to prevent further stretching, and exfoliating effectively removes dead skin cells and prevents pore-clogging buildup. Try Pure Balance Papaya Enzyme Peeling Wash. This plant enzyme-based deep cleanser formulated with natural papaya extract dissolves easily in cold water and eliminates dead skin cells without irritation, breaking down proteins to produce peptone, which washes away dirt and sebum within the pores without irritation. Tip: Exfoliate 1–3 times per week based on your skin type.   3. Incorporate retinol into your routine Believe me when I say retinol is a game-changer for pore refinement. A good retinol serum will boost cell turnover and collagen production, which tightens the skin around pores. Just remember though if you haven’t used retinol before you’ll want to introduce it slowly and at night to avoid any irritation. For more information on retinol click here.   4. Use Clay Masks Who doesn’t love a good mask and clay masks are no exception. In fact clay masks will absorb excess oil and draw out impurities from pores when applied. For a real deep clean use your clay mask once or twice a week. And look for masks that specifically have kaolin or bentonite clay. We love Phytomer CityLife Radiance Reviving Mask  This unique cream-mousse mask instantly counters dehydration, signs of fatigue, dark spots and enlarged pores. Combining 100% natural red and white clays, blue microalgae, red algae and a comprehensive depolluting complex of 3 marine sugars, it reveals luminosity, radiance and refined pores after just one application!   5. Hydrate Wisely Dehydrated skin can overcompensate by producing more oil, in turn worsening the appearance of your pores! Be sure to use lightweight, non-comedogenic moisturisers rich in hyaluronic acid, not heavy, greasy creams that could potentially clog your pores. We love: Hubislab Moisture Max Hydro Cream. It’s a powerful, fast-acting moisturiser that quickly locks in hydration while soothing skin. Formulated with a unique blend of hyaluronic compounds that work to form a protective moisture barrier, its lightweight texture provides a primer-like finish without any greasiness! 6. Protect Your Skin with Sunscreen UV damage breaks down collagen and makes pores look larger so you need to be armed with a good broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher and apply every single morning. Try to minimise sun exposure too and always wear a hat!   7. Use pore-minimizing products As well as your hydrating moisturiser and retinol serum, we recommend you invest in products specifically designed to refine pores too like Pevonia’s Age Correction Micro-Pores Refine Cream. it’s a mattifying treatment cream that minimizes pores by combining cutting-edge natural actives like red clover extract and retinol to regulate oil production and refine skin texture. This lightweight cream also hydrates while delivering antioxidants, leaving your skin smoother, balanced, and visibly clearer with regular use. 8. Avoid squeezing or picking pimples from clogged pores It’s tempting to squeeze clogged pores, but this can damage the skin and make pores appear larger. Use proper skincare tools or visit a professional for extractions.   9. Use a primer before applying makeup A good primer will become your lifeline if you are prone to enlarged pores. Not only will it stop your foundation from sliding off your face quite literally, it’ll keep your base smooth while reducing the appearance of pores (and fine lines!) if you are a sufferer of oily skin and pores on the, let’s say slightly larger side! Our recommended go-to is the ELES Pore Perfecting Face Primer. It’s oil-free (of course), perfectly lightweight and seems to combat shine almost instantly. It contains a natural Dermat Complex which enables it to absorb oil and effectively reduce pore size in one hit.   10. Choose your makeup wisely Unfortunately, our makeup can make pores seem bigger than they actually are. Products like our powders and foundation can settle into our pores over the course of the day, making them appear larger, so your best bet because, let’s face it we aren’t going to want to forego our miraculous makeup, is opt for mineral products! A huge benefit of using mineral makeup is that it’s non-comedogenic, meaning it won’t clog your pores! We love ELES Cosmetics range of mineral formulations. Try the best-selling Liquid Powder Mineral Foundation or if you’re a lover of powder foundations we highly recommend the Mineral Powder Foundation.   11. Give professional treatments a go if you are really concerned about your pore size, professional in-salon treatments can deliver dramatic results. Treatments such as chemical peels exfoliate intensively and deeply to unclog and refine pores. Microneedling boosts collagen production for firmer, smoother skin. And laser therapy reduces oil production and tightens skin.   12. Be Consistent Achieving smoother skin takes time. Stick to a routine and give products time to work, remember consistency is key to long-term improvement!   While you can’t change your pore size, you can control how they look by keeping them clean, unclogged, and supported with the right skincare routine. With a mix of at-home care and professional treatments, your pores can go from prominent to practically invisible.

Dull, ageing skin? This Korean skincare routine is for you

by Jo Boyden on Nov 01 2024
If you’ve noticed your skin is looking dull and devitalised of late, or maybe uneven skin tone and fine lines are starting to appear more often than you’d like, we feel you! Keep reading to learn all about this skin-loving ritual designed to hydrate, brighten and revive your skin with every step. if you’ve been searching for a way to bring life back to your complexion, this multi-step, pampering routine really is the answer!   Step 1: Use micellar water to melt away impurities The k-beauty skincare ritual kicks off with a double cleanse to ensure every ounce of dirt, grime, makeup and impurities is removed from your skin! You’ll want to start with a gentle micellar water to melt away makeup, sunscreen, and surface oils without stripping your skin. This step not only dissolves impurities but also provides an initial layer of hydration, setting the stage for every product to come! Use: Hubislab Pure Balance Micellar Gentle Lip & Eye Remover. Soothing and deeply nourishing it effectively removes makeup residue while soothing irritated skin around the eyes and lips. Step 2: Apply a cleansing gel to deep clean your pores Next up is a gel cleanser to ensure every trace of residue is removed, including deeper impurities. A mild, pH-balanced cleanser will prevent dryness while cleansing effectively, leaving your skin fresh and perfectly prepped. A two-step cleanse for some might seem excessive but it ensures a thoroughly clean slate so that your other products can penetrate more effectively. Use: Hubislab Pure Balance Refreshing Cleansing Gel. Formulated with natural surfactants extracted from corn, coconut, and palm kernel oils, this refreshing cleansing gel works to remove sebum and dead skin cells, while rebalancing the skin’s pH without irritation. Step 3: Be armed with a good exfoliator to bring back your glow A gentle exfoliator, used 1-3 times a week, is crucial for removing dead skin cells and revealing the healthy, glowing layer underneath. This step is especially important for ageing skin, as cell turnover slows with age, leading to a duller complexion. Use: Hubislab Pure Balance Papaya Enzyme Peeling Wash - this plant enzyme-based deep cleanser formulated with natural papaya extract dissolves easily in cold water and eliminates dead skin cells without irritation, breaking down proteins to produce peptone, which washes away dirt and sebum within the pores without irritation. Step 4: Incorporate a toner into your routine Many people skip this step because they don’t see it as essential but what they don’t know is a toner restores your skin’s natural pH and prepares it to absorb the rest of the products effectively!! Crazy to think that without it all the products you are applying to your skin might be working to their best ability! Make sure you opt for a hydrating toner that replenishes moisture. Try: Moisture Max Aqua Mist. Perfect for restoring and protecting your skin's moisture balance, this luxurious toning mist rich in minerals, vitamins, polysaccharides, and amino acids, is fortified with polyglutamicamide, algae extract, and betaine to provide deep hydration and elasticity to skin after every refreshing spritz.   Step 5: Invest in an essence, it’s the secret to a youthful glow! Essences are like a magical dose of hydration and nourishment. They’re the heart of Korean skincare, delivering an intense boost of moisture while preparing your skin to absorb serums more effectively. Try: Hubislab Premium Active Revival Essence. This essence is like liquid silk on the skin. Light and nourishing it instantly soaks into skin working its magic! It’s formulated with collagen and peptides ensuring skin is softer, smoother and plumper! Oh and its amazing at calming irritation and strengthening skin too!   Step 6: Don’t forget to apply a serum to target dullness, fine lines and pigmentation A serum is packed with concentrated active ingredients tailored to address your specific concerns, from dehydration and dullness to fine lines and dark spots. Look for ingredients like vitamin c and niacinamide that work to boost collagen, combat dullness by brightening the complexion, even skin tone and enhance elasticity! Try: Hubislab Derma Max Vitamin-C Complex 50% Ampoule. Vitamin C is a powerhouse ingredient for brightening and firming dull, ageing skin. Hubislab’s Derma Max Vitamin-C Complex features a high concentration of stable Vitamin C to fight oxidative stress, reduce dark spots, and boost radiance. Step 7: Once a week apply a mask and soak in the goodness A mask for many might not seem like a necessity but in Korean skincare routines, masks are a must! A sheet mask not only feels indulgent but also delivers hydration and active ingredients deeper into your skin. Pop one on for 10-20 minutes to brighten, firm, and replenish tired, ageing skin. Try: Hubislab e+ Epiderma Nova Cell Brightening Mask 5 x 35g. This anti-ageing brightening mask rich in strawberry, rose and mango extract, provides skin with antioxidant protection while toning, lifting and improving skin elasticity due to collagen production. It also supresses the production of melanin pigmentation, which contributes to the appearance of blemishes and freckles resulting in brighter, clearer skin!  Step 8: Make sure you always apply an eye cream to revitalize your delicate eye area Eye creams are essential in a Korean routine to nourish the delicate under-eye skin, where signs of ageing can appear first. Choose one that hydrates and firms, targeting puffiness and fine lines. Try: Hubislab Premium Active Eternal Face & Eye Cream. This outstanding product isn’t just your eye cream, it can be applied all over face too! Its packed with powerful ingredients including acemella oleacea extract and over 60% of BotalixTM, a patented combination of botulinum-derived ingredients and bio-antioxidants, to effectively fight ageing, minimizing fine lines and wrinkles while refining skin texture. Step 9: Now its time to apply your moisturiser to lock in hydration and put a stop to dull, dehydrated skin A rich, hydrating moisturiser is key to sealing in all the previous layers, ensuring long-lasting moisture and creating a smooth, plumped-up look. For ageing skin, a cream with rich emollients will provide extra nourishment. Try: Hubislab Moisture Max Hydro Moisturiser. Packed with hyaluronic acid, this moisture-rich, yet beautifully lightweight cream absorbs quickly into skin without any greasiness, providing skin with deep nourishment and a long-lasting luxurious feeling. Its perfect! Step 10: Slather on your sunscreen. It’s your daily armour against ageing! The final (and arguably most crucial) step in any skincare routine is SPF. UV exposure is a primary cause of premature ageing, so applying sunscreen every morning (yes even on cloudy days!) protects your skin and preserves all the work you’ve done! Just remember to use an SPF of 30 higher with broad-spectrum protection to guard against both UVA and UVB rays. Try: Hubislab Post Rays Derma Perfect Sunscreen SPF50 PA++++ -50g. Non irritating, soothing and nourishing, this sunscreen not only provides complete UV and antioxidant protection, but it is also formulated with peptides and hydrolysed collagen to combat premature ageing and hyperpigmentation. The invisible matte formula applies smoothly and stays on all day! If you have blemishes and don’t like the idea of slathering on sunscreen because you think it will exacerbate your skin try Herb 8 Soothing Blemish Balm SPF30 PA++. This outstanding sunscreen delivers SPF and so much more! It’s a multi-tasking dream! It combines the benefits of a soothing blemish balm with SPF 30 sun protection, and natural lightweight coverage to perfectly conceal blemishes and imperfections without clogging pores. Enriched with a blend of eight natural herbal extracts, including chamomile, rosemary, and lavender, this balm also helps to soothe, repair, and rejuvenate the skin. It evens skin tone while calming irritation and redness, which is especially helpful for those with sensitive or acne-prone skin. It’s also perfectly hydrating! Genius.   We get that this Hubislab routine can seem like a lot! But we are here to tell you that with this Korean skincare routine, your skin will go from dull and tired to vibrant and youthful in little to no time. Remember each step is designed to boost hydration, improve elasticity, and even out skin tone!

by Jo Boyden on Oct 25 2024
If you’ve been on the hunt for a skincare ingredient that tackles acne without being harsh, chances are you've heard of niacinamide. But does this popular ingredient really live up to the hype when it comes to fighting acne? Keep reading as we discuss what makes niacinamide a skincare superstar and why it really is one of the best ingredients for acne-prone skin.   What is niacinamide? Niacinamide, also known as vitamin B3, is a powerful yet gentle ingredient that works wonders for all skin types. Unlike some acne treatments that can dry or irritate your skin, niacinamide is non-irritating and offers a range of benefits beyond just clearing up breakouts. It strengthens the skin barrier, reduces inflammation, and improves skin texture—all while keeping your skin calm and hydrated too!   How does niacinamide help with acne? Niacinamide is a superstar when it comes to acne thanks to its versatile benefits. It helps; Reduce inflammation Niacinamide is known for its anti-inflammatory properties, which help soothe redness and irritation often associated with acne. It calms angry breakouts and speeds up the healing process. Regulate oil production One of the main culprits behind acne is excess oil production. Niacinamide helps balance your skin's oil levels, reducing the chances of clogged pores and new breakouts. Minimise pores Large, clogged pores are a breeding ground for acne. Niacinamide helps refine the appearance of pores, making them less visible and reducing the chances of future pimples. Fade acne marks Struggling with post-acne scars and dark spots? Niacinamide helps brighten and even out your complexion, fading those pesky marks over time.   Why niacinamide is perfect for acne-prone skin Unlike harsher ingredients like benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid, niacinamide is gentle on the skin. It works behind the scenes to clear up acne without causing dryness, flakiness, or irritation. Plus, it’s suitable for all skin types, including sensitive skin, making it the perfect solution for anyone dealing with breakouts.   How to use niacinamide for the best results To get the most out of niacinamide, look for serums or moisturisers containing a higher concentration. Niacinamide can be layered with other acne treatments or used on its own, and it pairs well with ingredients like hyaluronic acid and peptides. Just apply it after cleansing and before moisturising, and we promise you’ll soon notice smoother, clearer skin.   The best niacinamide rich products for blemish and acne prone skin Naturys Deep Purifying Serum Containing a purifying complex of niacinamide, bakuchiol with vitamin c, this soothing serum has been specifically formulated for oily and combination skin types. Enriched with olive oil microcapsules that melt when in contact with the skin, it helps correct overproduction of sebum, enlarged pores, acne and skin prone to redness.   Naturys Face Cream Age-Purifying This Age-Purifying cream acts on two aspects to ensure a specific and effective anti-ageing treatment for oily and combination skin. Formulated with niacinamide, bakuchiol and peptides, it balances the sebaceous gland activity, purifies the skin, removes imperfections and provides skin with outstanding anti-ageing and regenerating effects - combatting wrinkles and skin sagging. Used regularly, it reduces progressively enlarged pores and shiny areas too.   Hubislab A.C Clearing Active Control Cream This skin-soothing, antioxidant moisturising cream for acne prone skin is formulated with niacinamide, tea tree oil and mushroom extract (beta glucan) to control excessive sebum, tighten pores, rebalance oil production, and reduce skin redness. Why you need to use a night cream and the best ones for you

Why you need to use a night cream and the best ones for you

by Jo Boyden on Oct 25 2024
Ever wonder why your skin feels tired, dull, or even dry in the morning? The answer may lie in what you're missing at night! While you sleep, your skin enters repair mode, making it the perfect time to give it a little extra help with a night cream. These creams are designed to deeply nourish, hydrate, and rejuvenate your skin while you rest, so you wake up with a fresher, more radiant complexion. Keep reading as we explain why exactly it is that you should introduce a night cream to your routine if you haven’t already, and the best ones for your skin.   Why you need a night cream During the day, our skin battles environmental stressors like pollution, UV rays, blue light damage from our digital devices and for many of us makeup too, which can lead to premature ageing and other skin issues over time. But at night, while you sleep, your skin’s natural repair process kicks in, working to heal any damage and regenerate cells. Amazing right? Well a night cream can boost this process, leaving you with a smoother, more radiant complexion by morning.   But why not simply use your day moisturiser instead of a night cream you might ask? Unlike daytime moisturisers, which mainly focus on hydration and protection, night creams are packed with a multitude of richer, more potent ingredients from hyaluronic acid, to peptides, ceramides, niacinamide and more, that work together to enhance skin renewal and elasticity, target fine lines, as well as restore moisture levels. They are also formulated with active ingredients like retinol that works best when you’re sleeping. These ingredients promote cell turnover, smooth fine lines, and prevent early signs of ageing. Therefore if you skip this imperative step in your routine at night, you’re missing out on some of the most intense repair and hydration your skin can get! Night creams are also formulated to penetrate deeper into your skin providing intense hydration that lasts throughout the night!   How to choose the best night cream? Not all night creams are created equal! Just with your day creams, the best one for you depends on your skin type and concerns. If you’re battling dryness, look for rich, creamy formulations rich in hyaluronic acid or ceramides for deep hydration. For anti-ageing, opt for formulas with retinol or peptides to firm and smooth your skin. If brightening is your goal, night creams with vitamin C or niacinamide work wonders for evening out your complexion and reducing dark spots. And if you are worried about blemishes and acne marks, choose something with niacinamide and tea tree oil.   How often should you use a night cream? For the best results, you should be using a night cream every night after cleansing your skin. You can also use it over one or more serums as a night cream will lock in the benefits while retaining moisture in the skin.   Our top night cream recommendations; Best for Dry Skin Phytomer Hydrasea Night Plumping Rich Cream This gorgeously nourishing comfort cream literally envelopes the skin immediately restoring the skin barrier and locking in moisture leaving your skin feeling soft and supple by morning. Night after night, skin appears more plumped and revitalised.  1 review   Best for dull skin Vie Collection Night Peel Progressive Resurfacing Cream This ultra-soft night version of the chemical peel is a modern balm with a creamy texture that offers complete exfoliation to the skin, helping to brighten, refine and improve smoothness for a younger-looking complexion. Its formula is enriched with benchmark acids and has a progressive diffusion to act continuously all through the night. Each morning the complexion appears more luminous and even. After one month the skin looks renewed. Seriously.   Best for ageing skin Pevonia Micro Retinol Essential Moisturiser This light and gentle moisturiser increases cell turnover, stimulates collagen and elastin production (essential for youthful, plump skin), fades hyperpigmentation and helps skin stay hydrated and glowing without irritation. It’s a multi-tasking wonder! You should introduce it slowly though. This is because retinol makes your skin more sensitive to UV rays and sunlight decreases the efficacy of the product, hence why its such an essential night cream. To find out more about retinol and this Pevonia’s Micro Retinol range click here. Best for hyperpigmented skin Hubislab Derma Max Brightening Clinic This deeply moisturising night cream formulated with tranexamic acid, antioxidants and vitamins, nourishes the skin whilst soothing irritation, improving elasticity, correcting pigmentation and brightening the complexion all whilst you sleep! Remember, consistency is key! A great night cream will give you maximum benefits when used regularly, so don't skip out on this essential step. With the right night cream, you will wake up to healthier, plumper, nourished and glowing skin every morning!

Menopause and your skin: The effects and the best solutions

Menopause and your skin: The effects and the best solutions

by Jo Boyden on Oct 11 2024
If you’re perimenopausal (or perhaps you’ve already reached the menopause), you’ll likely feeling it’s effects. Your body is going through changes, your hormones are out of sync and your skincare routine that once worked wonders is now having little to no effect! But why is this you may be thinking? We all know Menopause is a natural part of ageing, but some of the changes it brings can be somewhat of a surprise – especially when it comes to our skin! From unexpected dryness to deep set wrinkles, keep reading as we discuss exactly how the menopause affects our skin and the best solutions to care for it.   So what exactly happens to your skin during perimenopause and menopause? During perimenopause and menopause, your skin starts to undergo noticeable changes due to hormonal fluctuations, particularly the decline in estrogen levels.   Common Skin Concerns During Menopause Wrinkles and sagging skin Estrogen stimulates collagen production, which keeps skin firm and plump. As estrogen levels drop during perimenopause, collagen production starts to dramatically decrease, leading to thinning skin, sagging, and more pronounced, deeper wrinkles especially around the mouth, eyes and neck! Reduced elasticity Along with collagen loss, elastin fibers—responsible for skin's elasticity—also break down, resulting in looser, less resilient skin. Increased dryness Estrogen also helps regulate the skin’s moisture levels by boosting natural oil production. As this decreases, your skin may become drier, rougher, tighter and more prone to irritation. It may also become more sensitive to products that once felt fine. Thinning skin As estrogen levels drop, and therefore with less collagen and moisture the skin’s protective barrier weakens, causing it to thin and making it more fragile and prone to bruising, sensitivity, and damage. Age spots Hormonal changes combined with years of sun exposure can exacerbate pigmentation issues resulting in the appearance of more age spots or dark patches, particularly on the face, hands, and chest. Slower cell turnover The rate at which your skin regenerates, slows down, leading to a dull, uneven complexion and a buildup of dead skin cells. These changes can affect your overall skin texture and appearance, but the right skincare routine can help manage and improve these concerns. Blemishes Pimples and breakouts are surprisingly common as you approach the menopause transition. And if you had a history of acne as a teenager, you’ll more susceptible to getting acne flare ups around the menopause too! This typically happens due to fluctuations in hormone levels. As estrogen levels decrease, the effects of male sex hormones called androgens increase. Androgens increase the production of sebum, the skin's natural oil. This excess oil can then mix with bacteria, dead skin and debris to clog pores resulting in breakouts! The best skincare tips and products for perimenopausal and menopausal skin Perimenopausal and menopausal skin requires extra care due to hormonal changes that affect its texture, hydration, and elasticity. Here are some of the best skincare tips and products to keep your skin healthy and radiant during this phase!   Hydration is key As estrogen levels drop, your skin produces less natural oil, leading to dryness. To combat this you need to use a rich, hydrating moisturiser. Look for products with ingredients like hyaluronic acid, glycerin, and ceramides to lock in moisture and strengthen the skin barrier. Solution: We highly recommend Pevonia Age Correction Marine Collagen Cream. This Pevonia global best-seller and beautifully nourishing cream is not only rich in ceramides, glycerin and hyaluronic acid but collagen too! Deeply hydrating, it rejuvenates skin, replenishing vital nutrients while softening fine lines and wrinkles. It’s so good! Boost collagen production Loss of collagen and elastin leads to sagging and wrinkles. To promote collagen synthesis you’ll want to use products rich in retinol and or peptides: Retinol increases cell turnover and collagen production, while peptides help stimulate collagen to improve firmness. Solution: Hailed the anti-ageing wonder serum, Medicalia's Retinol Concentrate is designed to normalize and boost cellular performance with Micro-Retinol technology. Ideal for all mature skin types or as preventative care, the serum helps improve elasticity, plump the skin and diminish the look of wrinkles, resulting in a brighter, more evenly toned complexion. Protect from UV damage Menopausal skin is more prone to sun damage, which can lead to age spots and further loss of elasticity so youll need to be sure that you are religious about applying broad-spectrum SPF daily. Make sure you choose at least SPF 30 to prevent further UV damage and hyperpigmentation. Solution: From Hubislab's Post Rays UV Protect Sun Block SPF50+ PA+++ to Vie Collection's Mela White Protective Sunscreen SPF 30 find out all about SPF protection and the best one for you here. Gentle exfoliation is a must When youre going through the perimenopause and menopause cell turnover starts to really slow down, leading to dull, uneven skin. Regular exfoliation is therefore essential as it helps slough off dead skin cells to reveal new hidden ones underneath! Just make sure you opt for chemical exfoliants. AHAs (like glycolic acid) or BHAs (like salicylic acid) will gently exfoliate without irritating sensitive skin. Solution: Pevonia Renewing Glycocides Cream. Combining glycolic acid with hydration hero hyaluronic acid, this exfoliating treatment cream works to dissolve dead skin cells, improving skin texture and diminishing fine lines too! Skin resurfaces soother, brighter and younger…seriously. Strengthen the skin barrier Another symptom of menopause is thinner more fragile skin so it's crucial to keep the barrier strong. Use products with ceramides and niacinamide as these ingredients help repair and strengthen the skin barrier, reducing irritation and sensitivity. Solution: We can’t get enough of Vie Collection's Serum De Vie - High Performance Youth Concentrate! For those serious about combating the signs of ageing, this powerful, beautifully nourishing serum is a game-changer. Its advanced formula works at a cellular level to protect skin cells while targeting fine lines, wrinkles, loss of elasticity and hyperpigmentation, helping to restore a youthful, firm and smooth complexion. With its powerful blend of antioxidants and peptides, it helps to stimulate collagen production and improve skin elasticity while niacinamide slows the transfer of melanin to key parts of the skin to fade the look of dark spots and age spots. It’s the ultimate weapon in your anti-ageing arsenal, believe me! Fight hyperpigmentation Hormonal changes can increase pigmentation issues, leading to age spots. To help this you need to use brightening serums with Vitamin C or niacinamide: These ingredients help fade dark spots and brighten the skin. Solution: Phytomer Oligoforce Lumination Targeted Dark Spot Mask with Vitamin B3 (rich in Niacinamide) This sheet mask soaked with a lotion enriched with Vitamin B3 visibly smoothes, plumps and evens skin tone after each application. Day after day, wrinkles are reduced, dark spots faded and skin tone evened out.  When it comes to Vitamin C (paired with niacinamide) , our absolute favourite is Derma Max Vitamin-C Complex 50% Ampoule. This perfectly nourishing Vitamin C based brightening complex helps reduce discolouration and lighten skin tone. Paired with niacinamide, it prevents the formation of hyperpigmentation and reduces melanin production. The result, brighter, more even skin!   Soothe with anti-inflammatory ingredients Menopausal skin can become more sensitive and prone to redness or irritation so try incorporating calming ingredients. Look for products with aloe vera, chamomile, or green tea to reduce inflammation and soothe irritation. Solution: Hubislab Post Rays Chamomile Complex 70% Ampoule. We have tried and tested this powerhouse product ourselves and are here to tell you just how good it really is! Firstly it’s deeply nourishing and soothing at the same time. It feels like silk when applied to the skin and it instantaneously calms irritation. It’s antibacterial and anti-inflammatory and we love that it purifies, protects and strengthens too, thanks to its outstanding cocktail of 70% Chamomile combined with other natural soothing ingredients.   Use night treatments Nighttime is when your skin repairs itself, making it a crucial time to use targeted treatments. Solution: Phytomer Night Recharge Youth Enhancing Cream. Sometimes the moisturiser we use in the day isn’t quite enough at night. This is when a night cream is a great option! At night, our skin goes into repair and regeneration mode so a richer night cream can make all the difference. In fact, a good night cream will not only sooth and calm skin while you sleep, but also deliver lasting moisture while addressing common skin concerns such as moisture loss and skin ageing! They also help in the skin repair and renewal process by improving cell turnover! The Phytomer Night Recharge is a beautiful rich textured cream which literally cocoons skin while restoring youthful vitality with a nourishing blend of active marine botanicals, alpha hydroxy acids and conditioning oils.   Be armed with treatment creams for blemish and acne flare ups Following a specific skincare routine can really help to keep acne at bay.  By using a gentle cleanser, non-comedogenic moisturiser, and targeted treatments, you can make all the difference to your skin. Some spot treatments can work wonders at reducing, and in some cases eliminating, unwanted blemishes overnight. This is because they encourage rapid healing by controlling bacteria, reducing inflammation and diminishing the follicular accumulation of keratin. For the most effective results look for spot treatments formulated with ingredients such as benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid. We highly recommend Phytomer's Oligopur Blemish Target Gel as the best spot treatment! It targets blemishes with precision, rapidly improving the skin’s appearance and eliminating spots almost overnight! Simply apply a small amount of product to your pimples and let the powerful ingredients keep your skin follicles clean to achieve an even and bright complexion by morning. Also, don't forget sunscreen – it's like armour for your skin, yes even for those of us with acne! And I know it sounds counterintuitive, slathering sunscreen all over acne flareups but believe me when I say avoiding sunscreen can worsen the appearance of acne, and if the skin gets sunburnt, the symptoms of acne can be painfully exasperated. Just be sure to choose your sunscreen wisely. Using the right sunscreen can prevent and heal acne, soothe the skin, keep dark spots and clogged pores at bay, all while protecting from harmful UV rays. We love Hubislab Herb 8 Soothing Blemish Balm SPF30 PA++   By combining these tips and using the right products to address the unique needs of your skin you can maintain healthy, glowing skin during perimenopause and menopause.

The most searched skin concerns: Expert approved solutions

by Jo Boyden on Oct 04 2024
When it comes to our skin, we all have our individual concerns, but how many of us have actually taken to google to seek solutions? And what skin conditions are people searching the most? Well we did a little investigating, and the results might actually surprise you, especially if you’ve been feeling alone with your skin woes. From rosacea and acne to hyperpigmentation and wrinkles, keep reading as we count down the most searched skin conditions on google this year and our expert solutions to tackle them! Rosacea As a supplier or some of the worlds leading professional products, it comes as no surprise to our team at BC that this skin condition is the most searched. Rosacea is said to affect up to a fifth of the population so if you are a sufferer you most certainly are not alone! To learn more about Rosacea, it’s causes and the best solutions, click here. Or if it’s makeup recommendations you’re after, you can find our expert suggestions here. Acne As the second most commonly searched skin condition, acne continues to be a leading concern, especially among younger demographics. I’m sure many of us have experienced unruly blemishes in our time, whether we suffered from pimples as an adolescent or if they have come to haunt you in adulthood, but many amongst us are prone to acne. What exactly is acne you might ask? And could you have it? Click here to find out all there is you know. And if you’re searching for the best makeup products to conceal and heal your acne you can find our top recommendations here. Blackheads Not far behind acne is blackheads. And yes, I’m certain when I say we have all dealt with a black head or two, or many more in our time! Blackheads are in fact a type of acne (acne vulgaris). They're open bumps on the skin that fill with excess oil and dead skin. They look as if dirt is in the bump, but an irregular light reflection off the clogged follicle actually causes the dark spots. To learn more about blackheads and shop our highly recommended solutions click here. Hyperpigmentation Hyperpigmentation, including melasma and age spots (also known as dark spots, sun spots and liver spots), is another frequent search, particularly as people seek solutions to even out their skin tone and reduce dark spots. The condition most commonly occurs due to overproduction of melanin, the natural pigment in the skin, which is why it’s often exacerbated during the sunny summer months (thank you sunshine!) However, it can also occur due to inflammation caused from conditions like acne, just what you don’t need, and while hyperpigmentation can be hard to avoid for some, you can definitely help reduce its severity by following a few key steps. To learn everything you need to know about hyperpigmentation including the causes and the best treatments click here. Age spots Next on the list is age spots. As mentioned above age spots are a common form of hyperpigmentation. They are flat, dark patches that commonly appear on areas of the skin that are frequently exposed to the sun (like the face, hands, shoulders and arms) this is due to prolonged sun exposure as well as ageing. Age spots are harmless they can make people feel self conscious. The great news is there are means to dramatically reduce their appearance with skincare solutions as previously mentioned.  The best skincare solutions include using broad-spectrum sunscreen daily to prevent further darkening, and incorporating brightening treatments with ingredients like Vitamin C, niacinamide, and hydroquinone. Regular exfoliation with AHAs (alpha hydroxy acids) or retinol can also help fade existing spots by promoting skin cell turnover and revealing fresher, clearer skin underneath. Like with blackheads, I’m sure the majority, if not all of us have not experienced these little bumps many a time. Another common type of acne, whiteheads occur when pores become clogged with oil, dead skin cells, and bacteria. Unlike blackheads though, which as previously mentioned are open to the surface and turn dark due to oxidation, whiteheads remain closed, creating small, white or flesh-coloured bumps. They typically appear on the face, particularly in areas like the forehead, nose, and chin, but can also occur on the chest, shoulders, and back. While they may seem harmless, we know whiteheads can be frustrating to deal with, especially if they keep coming back. Luckily, with the right skincare routine, you can keep whiteheads at bay and maintain a clearer, healthier complexion. Just be sure you cleanse twice a day, morning and night and look for ingredients like salicylic acid, which helps to unclog pores and prevent new whiteheads from forming. Exfoliation is also paramount as it helps remove dead skin cells that can clog pores and lead to whiteheads. Opt for chemical exfoliants like AHAs (alpha hydroxy acids) or BHAs (beta hydroxy acids), such as glycolic acid or salicylic acid. These acids help dissolve the buildup inside pores, keeping them clear and preventing future breakouts. We LOVE the ProCorrective Clear Control Exfoliator.  Formulated with Salicylic Acid, Caviar Lime, Tea Tree and Rosemary, it provides gentle but effective exfoliating action to open and clear pores, combatting acne-causing bacteria. Dry skin I’m sure we’ve all experienced dry skin at some point in our lives but many struggle with this skin condition all year round. If your skin has been feeling somewhat tight of late, itchy and irritated even, or if you’re prone to dry patches and flakiness on your face, it’s likely you have dry skin too! But what exactly is causing your dry complexion you might ask? And why doesn’t your current skincare routine appear to be working to help counteract this condition? As we can see from the search volume, at #7 on the most searched skin conditions, dry skin is very common and can affect anyone at any age. Typically, it happens when our sebaceous glands don’t produce enough oil (sebum) and our skin in turn loses too much water. This is because our natural oils help trap in moisture to keep the skin soft, smooth and supple, if there isn’t enough oil, moisture can escape, leaving the top layer of skin prone to dryness. Unfortunately, the lack of oil production is caused by a number of external factors including genetics (thanks parents!), dry air or indoor heating, over exfoliating, long hot shower (who doesn’t love one of those!). harsh products, ageing and hard water (tap water that contains a high concentration of minerals including calcium and magnesium, this hard water can change the pH balance of your skin as well as leave a film over your skin’s surface that may clog pores, cause dryness and even trigger breakouts, itching and flaking! Ouch. When it comes to improving your dry skin we cant go past these top skincare recommendations from the experts.   Wrinkles Starting to see signs of ageing on your face? Worried about wrinkles? According to the google search you are most definitely not alone! In fact, wrinkles are a major concern for both men and women, so much so that wrinkle injections are a fast-growing market, accounting for almost 40% of cosmetic surgery procedures performed in the world, and 70% of aesthetic medicine interventions. But what if Botox and the likes aren’t for you? Are there safer, natural and needle-free alternatives that really work to diminish the appearance of wrinkles? In short yes! While there is no serum or wrinkle cream that can magically make wrinkles disappear in a week quite like Botox, thanks to the advancement in both technology and skincare ingredients, the natural alternatives can seriously achieve similar smoothing and plumping results. What’s more these non-invasive topical alternatives give you more control over the change in your appearance (no poker-face in sight!), provide a much more natural look, plus when used daily as part of your skincare routine will achieve outstanding on-going results. Want to know what the best products to fight skin ageing and reduce your wrinkles are? Click here.   Oily skin If you’re fed up with your face feeling greasy every single day, you’re constantly looking for ways to prevent your makeup sliding off your skin by mid-morning, or you’re simply over staring in the mirror and seeing a super shiny complexion staring back (and not because you’ve been adopting the ‘hyper glowing skin’ trend of late), it’s time to get serious about your oily skin condition. Despite oily skin being a nuisance, believe it or not, it’s actually not all doom and gloom! Oily skin happens when the sebaceous glands in your skin make too much sebum. Sebum is the waxy, oily substance that protects and hydrates the skin (it’s actually a blessing as it’s vital for keeping the skin super healthy and youthful looking) however, too much sebum can lead to oily skin! This in turn results in your greasy, shiny complexion and can also result in clogged pores, and unwanted acne if not treated! Fear not though, with the right routine for oily skin you can keep this skin condition of yours at bay!

SPF protection: Choosing the best sunscreen for your skin

SPF protection: Choosing the best sunscreen for your skin

by Jo Boyden on Sep 06 2024
With the weather warming up and many of swapping out our jumpers for summer attire, it’s time to make sure we are being serious about our suncare! And yes, you should be wearing SPF protection all year round come rain, hail or shine, but it’s the spring and summer months that can really do the most damage to our skin due to an increase in sun exposure and UVA and UVB intensity. With so many sunscreen options out there though, it’s easy to feel confused about which one to choose, how much to apply, and why it’s so important in the first place. Keep reading as we explain why SPF is non-negotiable for anyone who cares about their skin and how to choose the best sunscreen for you.   Firstly, why is sunscreen so important? As much as we all love the sun, it sadly emits harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays that can do serious damage to our skin, leading to premature ageing and in some cases skin cancer. These UV rays come in two main forms: UVA and UVB, and they both affect our skin in different ways. A daily SPF acts as a protective barrier, preventing these rays from damaging our skin.   UVA verses UVB rays When it comes to protecting your skin from the sun, understanding the difference between UVA and UVB rays is essential for choosing the right sunscreen. UVB rays affect the surface of your skin and are primarily responsible for sunburn. They also play a significant role in developing skin cancer. UVB rays vary in intensity depending on the season, but they’re dangerous year-round. UVA rays penetrate deeper into your skin and are responsible for premature ageing, causing wrinkles, fine lines, and dark spots. UVA rays can also contribute to skin cancer. They are present year-round, even on cloudy days, and can even penetrate through windows! Scary stuff! To protect against both UVA and UVB rays you need a broad-spectrum sunscreen.   What does SPF stand for and what does it actually mean? SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor, and it’s a measure of how long your skin is protected from UVB rays only, before it starts to burn. For example, SPF 30 means your skin is protected 30 times longer than it would be without sunscreen. However, this doesn’t mean that higher SPF numbers offer exponentially more protection. Here’s how it breaks down: SPF 15 blocks about 93% of UVB rays. SPF 30 blocks about 97% of UVB rays. SPF 50 blocks about 98% of UVB rays. While SPF 100 might seem like overkill, there’s only a slight increase in protection from SPF 50 to SPF 100, so don’t stress too much about going over SPF 50. What matters most is that you’re applying enough sunscreen and reapplying it regularly.   How does SPF work? SPF doesn’t create an impenetrable shield but rather extends the amount of time you can stay in the sun without burning. For example, if your skin would normally burn after 10 minutes in the sun, applying SPF 30 theoretically extends that time by 30 times, giving you about 300 minutes (or 5 hours) of protection. This can vary based on factors like skin type, intensity of sunlight, and amount of sunscreen applied. There are two main types of sunscreens - physical (mineral) and chemical sunscreen: Physical or mineral-based sunscreens are formulated with ingredients like zinc oxide and titanium dioxide which create a barrier on your skin’s surface that reflects UV rays. They’re great for sensitive skin and are often less irritating. Chemical sunscreens formulated with ingredients like homosalate, avobenzone and oxybenzone, work by absorbing UV rays before they can damage your skin. They’re often lighter in texture but may irritate sensitive skin.   How long does SPF really last for? Even though the SPF number indicates extended protection, sunscreens typically last only 2 hours before they need to be reapplied. This is especially true if you’re swimming, sweating, or towelling off. Water-resistant sunscreens can help, but they still need to be reapplied frequently to maintain their effectiveness.   Additional application tips: Be sure to apply sunscreen generously to all exposed areas of your skin, and don’t forget often-missed spots like your ears, neck, and the tops of your feet. The key to effective sun protection is consistency—whether it’s sunny or cloudy, always include sunscreen in your daily skincare routine, it’s THE most important step!   Choosing the right SPF: For daily use, an SPF 30 sunscreen is generally sufficient, as it blocks about 97% of UVB rays. However, if you have fair skin, are prone to burning, or spend a lot of time outdoors, consider an SPF 50 or higher for additional protection. Keep in mind that no sunscreen can block 100% of UV rays, so reapplication every two hours, or after swimming or sweating, is crucial.   What is the best sunscreen for you? The first thing you want to do when selecting your sunscreen is to know your skin type. If you have oily skin, you’ll want to look for a non-comedogenic, oil-free formulations that won’t clog pores. Dry skin? Opt for a sunscreen with hydrating ingredients like glycerin or hyaluronic acid. For sensitive skin, mineral sunscreens are your best bet, as they’re less likely to cause irritation. For daily use under makeup, a lightweight, mattifying sunscreen might be more suitable. Some sunscreen products can be specially formulated to provide other benefits to the skin, such as extra moisture, and may contain beneficial ingredients like soothing niacinamide and ceramides to restore your skin’s natural protective barrier.   Our sunscreen recommendations; Hubislab Post Rays UV Protect Sun Block SPF50+ PA+++ This amazing multi-tasking sun block provides complete UV and antioxidant protection for ageing or stressed-out skin! Medicalia Sunscreen SPF 40 with Blue Light Shield The one and only reason why so many people are reluctant to use sunscreen (despite knowing how important it is) is because they can’t stand the texture or smell. Well with this outstanding tinted formulation there is no thick white paste or unruly sunscreen smell in sight! It feels like a lightweight moisturiser, smells divine, is loaded with anti-ageing goodies and it won’t cause itchiness thanks to its mineral formulation including both zinc and iron oxides. Very slightly tinted (though most of the tint disappears once it’s absorbed) it leaves your skin looking smoother and calmer. Oh and it protects skin against not only UVA and UVB rays (yes it provides skin with broad spectrum protection) but pollution and blue light damage omitted from our screens too! What’s more the formula is reef-safe and works for all skin types and tones too! Its outstanding!   Vie Collection Mela White Protective Sunscreen SPF 30 This is not only an amazing daily sunscreen to protect skin from UV rays, but it’s also formulated with two high-tech ingredients that act against hyperpigmentation and free radicals. Day after day, with daily use of course! Dark spots are less visible, skin is unified, smoothed and better protected. It’s a fantastic option for those who are after a great sun protection but are already suffering from sun damage.   ELES Blue Light Radiant BB Cream 30 If you are looking for an SPF product that is your makeup and daily moisturiser in one, look no further than this best-selling BB Cream with SPF 30 from ELES. The ultimate multi-tasker, this radiance boosting, de-ageing BB Cream is your morning moisturiser, foundation and sun protection all in one. Formulated with potent ingredients including peptides, beta-carotene, amino acids, vitamin c, niacinamide, hyaluronic acid, vitamin e and vitamin c, it nourishes, brightens and protects skin against UVA, UVB, blue light and free radical damage! Genius! What’s more it provides light, buildable coverage, evening out skin tone while minimising the appearance of fine lines and imperfections for a truly natural, luminous finish!   Just remember, the best sunscreen is the one you’ll use consistently, so find a formula that feels comfortable on your skin and fits seamlessly into your routine. Just be sure its labelled as broad-spectrum so you have comprehensive coverage against both harmful rays.
9 signs of a damaged skin barrier and how to fix it

9 signs of a damaged skin barrier and how to fix it

by Jo Boyden on Sep 06 2024
A healthy skin barrier is the secret to glowing skin. When it’s healthy, our skin looks radiant and plump, but when it’s damaged it can become prone to dryness, inflammation, breakouts and more! If you’ve been dealing with skin issues that just won’t go away, your skin barrier could well be to blame!  Keep reading to learn about 9 common signs of a damaged skin barrier, why yours may be compromised and the best solutions to fix it!   What is our skin barrier? The outer most layer of our skin, or technically known as the stratum corneum, our skin barrier is a complex system of lipids, proteins and cells. It’s the first line of defence against bacteria and external aggressors, from pollution and harsh weather conditions, to stress, smoking and even blue light damage from our digital devices! Think of it as a protective shield keeping irritants out and locking moisture in. What are the most common signs of a damaged skin barrier? Increased sensitivity Do you find your skin reacting to products that never used to be a problem? Unfortunately a damaged barrier can make your skin hypersensitive. This means that products with active ingredients like retinol or vitamin C might suddenly cause stinging or irritation. Aghh How to fix it: Simplify your skincare routine. Focus on soothing and hydrating skin. Opt for fragrance-free, hypoallergenic products designed specifically for sensitive skin, then slowly reintroduce active ingredients once your barrier is repaired. Dryness and Flakiness Dry, flaky skin can be a major sign that your skin barrier isn’t holding onto moisture the way it should. Even if you’re moisturising regularly, your skin might still feel parched and tight. How to fix it: You need to incorporate a hydrating serum rich in hyaluronic acid into your daily routine and up the ante with your moisturiser too! You want a nourishing moisturiser formulated with ceramides, hyaluronic acid and glycerin which will help lock in moisture and rebuild the barrier. Redness and Inflammation One of the first indicators of a damaged skin barrier is redness that just won’t go away. If your skin is constantly inflamed, blotchy, or has developed conditions like rosacea, it’s a sign that your protective layer is compromised. Without the barrier functioning properly, your skin is more susceptible to irritants and environmental factors that can cause persistent redness. How to fix it: Calm your skin with products containing anti-inflammatory ingredients like niacinamide, aloe vera, and chamomile. Avoid anything that could further irritate your skin, like harsh exfoliants or overly fragrant products. Breakouts and Acne When your skin barrier is compromised, your skin can overproduce oil to compensate for the lack of moisture. This can lead to clogged pores, breakouts, and even acne in those of us who normally have clear skin. How to fix it: Use a gentle cleanser that will remove excess oil without stripping the skin of its natural moisture. And make sure you avoid products that could clog your pores. Incorporate lightweight, oil-free moisturisers that hydrate without causing breakouts. Tightness and Discomfort Do you often feel like your skin is tight or uncomfortable, especially after cleansing? This could be a sign that your barrier is stripped of its natural oils. When your skin loses its protective lipids, it can no longer maintain its elasticity and comfort, leading to a sensation of tightness. How to fix it: The first step to fixing tight, uncomfortable skin is to replenish lost moisture and help rebuild the lipid layer of the barrier. Creamy or oil-based cleansers are great for restoring hydration while gently removing dirt and impurities and look for products rich in ceramides, fatty acids, glycerin, hyaluronic acid and squalane which will help restore the natural protective layer as well as lock in moisture. Hyperpigmentation A weakened barrier can make your skin more susceptible to damage from the sun and environmental pollutants, leading to an increase in hyperpigmentation such as dark spots, also known as age spots and sun spots! If you notice that your skin is developing more pigmentation issues, it could be a sign that your barrier needs some serious TLC. How to fix it: Incorporate antioxidants such as vitamin c and niacinamide into your skincare routine as they can help repair the skin and reduce the appearance of dark spots by neutralizing free radicals. Once your barrier is stronger you can then start introducing targeted treatments to fade hyperpigmentation. And sunscreen is a non-negotiable! Look for sunscreens that not only protect your skin from sun damage but also help repair hyperpigmentation too! Itching and burning sensations If your skin feels itchy, tingly, or has a burning sensation, even when you’re using your usual products, this could be a sign that your skin barrier has been compromised. This discomfort is your skin’s way of telling you it needs some extra care. How to fix it: Avoid using hot water on your face and skip harsh treatments like scrubs or peels. Opt for soothing, fragrance-free moisturisers and avoid over-washing. Dehydrated skin despite an oily appearance Ever had skin that feels oily on the surface but tight and dry underneath? This is a classic sign of a damaged barrier. Your skin might be overproducing oil to make up for the lack of moisture, leading to that uncomfortable mix of oily and dehydrated skin. How to fix it: Balance your skin with hydrating products that aren’t too heavy. Hyaluronic acid serums and light, non-greasy moisturisers can help provide the moisture your skin needs without adding excess oil. Ingredients like glycerin and squalane can provide moisture balance. Premature ageing Without proper protection, your skin is more exposed to free radicals and environmental damage which can accelerate the ageing process! Therefore a damaged skin barrier can lead to premature wrinkles, fine lines, and a loss of elasticity. How to fix it: Focus on repairing your barrier with nourishing, antioxidant-rich products that protect and strengthen your skin. Incorporate ingredients like peptides, vitamin C, vitamin E and sunscreen to help combat free radicals and boost collagen production.   Why do you have a damaged skin barrier? A damaged skin barrier can result from a variety of factors! Anything from your lifestyle and skincare habits to the environment. Here are the most common reasons your skin barrier could be compromised right now; Over-exfoliation Using exfoliants too frequently, whether physical scrubs or chemical exfoliants (like AHAs and BHAs), can strip away the outermost layer of your skin. This layer is crucial for protecting the underlying skin, and over-exfoliating can leave your skin vulnerable to damage. Harsh skincare products Products with high concentrations of active ingredients, such as retinol or acids, can be too strong for some skin types, especially if used too often or without proper moisturising and sun protection. Harsh cleansers with sulfates or alcohol can also strip your skin of its natural oils, leading to a weakened barrier. Environmental factors Exposure to extreme weather conditions—like harsh winds, cold temperatures, or excessive sun—can compromise your skin barrier. Pollution and other environmental toxins can also stress the skin, leading to barrier damage over time. Dehydration There are many reasons your skin might be dehydrated. From the products you are using (you need more moisture) to a change in weather or simply being over exposed to hot or cold air be it air con or heating! And then there is the chance we are simply dehydrated from not drinking enough water I know many of us can be guilty of that! Over-cleansing Washing your face too often or using water that’s too hot can strip your skin of its natural oils. This over-cleansing can disrupt the skin’s natural pH balance and lead to barrier damage. Eek! Stress and lack of sleep Sadly stress and inadequate sleep can really take a toll on our skin. Stress hormones like cortisol can lead to inflammation and impair the skin’s ability to repair itself, making your barrier more susceptible to damage. Allergies and irritants Using products that contain allergens or irritants, such as fragrances or certain preservatives, can trigger allergic reactions or irritation, leading to a compromised skin barrier. Poor diet Yes! You read that right. What you eat can definitely reflect on your skin! A diet lacking in essential nutrients like healthy fats, vitamins, and antioxidants, can weaken your skin barrier. Consuming too much sugar or processed foods can also lead to inflammation and skin issues. Ageing As you age, your skin naturally loses some of its ability to retain moisture and regenerate. This makes the skin barrier more prone to damage and less efficient at protecting against external factors. Medical Conditions Certain skin conditions, like eczema, psoriasis, or rosacea, inherently involve a compromised skin barrier. These conditions require specific care to help manage symptoms and protect the skin.   How to repair a damaged skin barrier If you now know your skin barrier has been damaged there are simple steps you can take to fix it so fear not! Just remember restoring your skin barrier won’t happen overnight though, so make sure you are consistent with your care and you will see improvements we promise! Here are a few general tips: Avoid hot water Ok so this is one I am definitely guilty of. I LOVE a piping hot shower or bath but I do know that this is damaging my skin! Sadly hot water can strip your skin of its natural oils, exacerbating dryness and irritation. Try to be less like me and use lukewarm water when at least cleansing your face! Stay Hydrated Drinking plenty of water helps to maintain your skin’s hydration levels from the inside out (one hand holding my water bottle as I type this!) Try to manage stress and get plenty of shut eye! Stress-reducing activities like meditation, listening to music and exercise can definitely help alleviate stress. And there is a reason “beauty sleep” is a thing! By trying to get enough sleep (7-9 hours day night) can really make a difference to your skin. Protect your skin from the sun Well this is definitely a given. We all know that the sun is the no. 1 cause of damage to our skin. And unfortunately a damaged barrier is more vulnerable to UV damage, so make sure to apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen daily. You should already be anyway! Simplify your routine and use nourishing skincare Less is more when your skin barrier is damaged. Stick to a basic cleanser, cut back on exfoliants, retinol creams, and other potentially irritating products and focus on gentle, hydrating serums and moisturisers formulated with nourishing and barrier-repairing ingredients including ceramides, hyaluronic acid, niacinamide and glycerin. These ingredients help to replenish your skin’s natural lipids and restore its protective function. Hyperpigmentation: The causes and the best treatments

Hyperpigmentation: The causes and the best treatments

by Jo Boyden on Aug 30 2024
Hyperpigmentation is a fairly common skin condition and affects people of all ages. But if you are one of the many dealing with stubborn dark spots or patches on your skin you are likely wondering why and how you can get rid of it! Understanding what causes hyperpigmentation is the first step in effectively treating it. Read on to discover everything you need to know about hyperpigmentation, what the most common causes are, as well as the best options for achieving a more even, radiant complexion.   What is hyperpigmentation? Hyperpigmentation is when certain areas of your skin become darker than the surrounding skin. This happens because of an excess production of melanin, the pigment that gives your skin its colour. Hyperpigmentation can appear as very small brown, black, grey or pink spots, or patches but can also cover larger areas of your skin, usually on your face. These spots or patches are more commonly known as brown spots, age spots, sun spots or as our grandparents used to call them, liver spots. While hyperpigmentation is not harmful, and can be common in people of all ages and skin types, it can definitely be frustrating! Fortunately, with the right treatments, you can effectively reduce the appearance of hyperpigmentation and restore a more even complexion!   What are the most common types of hyperpigmentation? Age Spots Also known as liver spots (as our grandparents would have called them back in the day!), age spots are flat, brown, grey, or black spots that typically appear on sun-exposed areas of the skin as you age. In short, age spots tend to develop in people over the age of 50 and are the result of prolonged UV exposure over the years.  Sun Spots Also caused by UV exposure, sun spots, medically known as actinic keratoses, are similar in appearance to age spots but can occur at any age. Although they can commonly appear on the face, you can also find sun spots all over areas of the body which has been exposed to the sun. The biggest difference between harmless age spots and sun spots is the texture. Age spots are smooth and flat, but potentially dangerous sun spots usually feel rough and scaly. Melasma Also known as chloasma, or “the mask of pregnancy”! the potential main triggers for Melasma is genetics, hormonal fluctuations and sun overexposure. Very common in pregnancy, melasma can suddenly appear in the form of brown patches usually on your face.   What causes hyperpigmentation? Several factors can actually contribute to hyperpigmentation, although sun exposure is the no.1 cause! Sun Exposure UV rays from the sun trigger melanin production, leading to sunspots and dark patches, especially on areas frequently exposed to the sun. Hormonal Changes Conditions like melasma, often triggered by pregnancy or birth control pills, cause dark, blotchy patches on the skin. Inflammation Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation can result from acne, injuries, or skin conditions like eczema, where the skin overproduces melanin during healing. Age Over time, the skin’s ability to regulate melanin production diminishes, leading to age spots.   How to get rid of hyperpigmentation Ultimately to prevent or reduce hyperpigmentation you need to do 4 things; Wear sunscreen Sadly exposure to the sun, (which we know ramps up over the summer months!) can both worsen existing age spots and sun spots, as well as encourage new ones to form! The most effective way to therefore prevent this from happening is to apply sunscreen (at least SPF 30) liberally and religiously even single day. You know I preach about how sunscreen should be a non-negotiable step in your skincare routine come rain, hail or shine though! Use brightening products Products containing Vitamin C, niacinamide and retinol are all powerful allies in the fight against pigmentation. These ingredients work to lighten dark spots and even out your skin tone, leaving you with a brighter, more uniform complexion. Look for formulas with high concentrations of active ingredients for maximum efficacy. Just remember skincare requires patience and consistency to reap the long-term benefits!  Exfoliate regularly Regular exfoliation is key to fading age spots and pigmentation. Alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) and beta hydroxy acids (BHAs) help slough off dead skin cells, promoting cell turnover and revealing fresher, more evenly-toned skin. Consider using a gentle chemical exfoliant a few times a week to target discolouration without irritating your skin. Wear protective clothing Wearing protective clothing will also help fight hyperpigmentation by shielding your skin from harmful UV rays, which as we know are a major cause of age spots, sun spots and uneven skin tone. Fabrics with a tight weave and sun-protective properties will block the penetration of UV rays, reducing the risk of sun-induced pigmentation. Wide-brimmed hats, long sleeves, and UV-protective fabrics are effective at minimizing direct sun exposure, preventing existing pigmentation from worsening, and helping to maintain an even skin tone over time. And don’t forget your peepers! sunglasses are a must too!   The best products to fade hyperpigmentation As mentioned, one of the simplest ways to protect your skin from hyperpigmentation is to wear sunscreen daily, no matter what the weather is like. However if you are looking for products to fade your already pigmentated skin, we have the solution for you!   Vie Collection Mela White Protective Sunscreen SPF 30 This is not only an amazing daily sunscreen to protect skin from UV rays, but it’s also formulated with two high-tech ingredients that act against dark spots and free radicals. Vita B3 Concentrated Solution Boost your skincare routine with a shot of vitamin B3 to visibly improve skins radiance while reducing the appearance of dark spots. 10% vitamin B3 (niacinamide) acts by slowing down the transport of melanin to the keratinocytes (the most common type of skin cell constituting the epidermis) effectively decreasing pigmentation while reinforcing the protective functions of the skin barrier for the optimal skin health. The concentrate’s light, melting texture allows the active ingredients to penetrate the skin for outstanding efficiency and immediate results. Skin is brighter, more uniform and more visibly radiant. After continued use, hyperpigmentation is significantly reduced.
