Salicylic acid: What is it and how will it benefit your skin

Salicylic acid: What is it and how will it benefit your skin

by Jo Boyden on Aug 17 2024
Whether you’re battling breakouts, dealing with oily skin, or just looking for a way to keep your complexion clear, you’ll want to ensure salicylic acid is an ingredient in your skincare! But what exactly is salicylic acid? And how does it transform you skin? Keep reading for everything you need to know about salicylic acid—why it’s so effective, how to use it, and why it deserves a spot in your skincare routine. What is salicylic acid? Salicylic acid is a beta hydroxy acid (BHA) known for its exfoliating and anti-inflammatory properties, commonly used in skincare. it penetrates deep into the pores, dissolving excess oil and exfoliating dead skin cells. This helps prevent and treat breakouts, blackheads, and whiteheads. Unlike some harsher acne treatments, salicylic acid is gentle yet effective, making it suitable for frequent use (we are talking 2-3 times a week). Incorporating salicylic acid into your skincare routine can lead to clearer, smoother skin! How does salicylic acid work? By breaking down the bonds between dead skin cells, salicylic acid encourages their shedding, which helps to prevent pore blockages that lead to breakouts. Is salicylic acid suitable for all skin types? Salicylic acid is ideal for those with oily or acne-prone skin, as it helps control excess oil production and prevents the formation of new pimples. However, it can also benefit other skin types, particularly those who are susceptible to the occasional breakout or congested skin. Can salicylic acid cause skin irritation? Salicylic acid can sometimes cause skin irritation, especially if you use it excessively or tend to have sensitive skin.  Common signs of irritation include redness, dryness, peeling, or a burning sensation. Just before you test the product first before applying all over your face. How often should you use salicylic acid? How often you use skincare formulated with salicylic acid really depends on the product itself as well your skin specific skin type. If you are new to salicylic acid, we recommend you start with using it once or twice a week and gradually increase to daily use if your skin tolerates it. It's also important to follow up with a good moisturiser to keep your skin hydrated. Can you use salicylic acid with other skincare ingredients? Yes, you can use salicylic acid with other skincare ingredients, but it's important to be cautious. Combining salicylic acid with soothing and hydrating ingredients like niacinamide and hyaluronic acid, can work wonders for your skin. However, be careful when combining it with other exfoliants like glycolic acid or retinol, as this can increase the risk of irritation. It's best to introduce these ingredients gradually into your routine or use them on alternate days to avoid over-exfoliating your skin. How to incorporate salicylic acid into your skincare routine Start with a cleanser containing salicylic acid, using it slowly to allow your skin to adjust. If your skin tolerates it well, you can gradually increase usage or introduce additional products like serums or spot treatments. Always follow with a moisturiser and sunscreen, as salicylic acid can make your skin more sensitive to the sun. The secret to a flawless finish: Must-have beauty products

The secret to a flawless finish: Must-have beauty products

by Jo Boyden on Aug 16 2024
I’m sure I’m right in saying we’d all love to achieve that coveted flawless finish - a smooth, even complexion that looks naturally radiant and free of imperfections! While achieving perfection might seem like the impossible for some, I’m here to tell you that with the right products and techniques, you can definitely get pretty darn close! Keep reading as we reveal the beauty products you need to help you achieve a truly flawless finish. Start with a good skincare routine Before you even think about makeup, lets talk skincare! To achieve a flawless finish you need to get your skincare routine down pat as no makeup, no matter how good it is, will apply smoothy without going onto healthy, hydrated skin! Cleanser First things first, you need to make sure your skin is perfectly cleansed. A cleanser preps skin by removing dirt, oil, and impurities that can clog pores and lead to breakouts or uneven texture. Clean skin allows your makeup to adhere better and last longer, creating a smoother canvas for application. A good cleanser also balances the skin’s pH, preventing dryness or excessive oiliness that can affect your makeup applying smoothly. By starting with a clean, refreshed face, you will set the foundation for a radiant, flawless complexion. Exfoliator Your exfoliator will not only help remove dead skin cells (which if left on the surface of your skin can lead to clogged pores, dullness and rough skin texture!) but by exfoliating your skin you will enable your skincare products like your moisturiser and serum to penetrate more deeply and effectively, in turn boosting their efficacy and therefore deeply nourishing your skin, and as I said before makeup will never look and feel flawless without going onto a healthy, hydrated complexion. You don’t need to exfoliate every day though as this can lead to over-exfoliation, once or twice weekly is ideal. Moisturiser This is non-negotiable. Just be sure to choose a moisturiser suited to your skin type. For combination to oily skin you’ll want to opt for a lightweight, oil free formula. For ageing, dry and dehydrated skin a richer cream formulated with hyaluronic acid should be your go to. N.B. Applying a serum under your moisturiser for an added extra boost of nourishment can be a real game-changer when it comes to achieving that truly flawless finish. Primer When it comes to your makeup, the foundation of a flawless look starts with a good primer. A primer fills in pores, smooths fine lines and skin texture, brightens and primes skin, and preps it for makeup oh and it helps your makeup last longer too! N.B Look for one that matches your skin type—a hydrating primer for dry skin or mattifying primer for oily skin. Now it’s time for your makeup. Foundation Now, let's talk foundation. Your foundation will help even out skin tone, cover blemishes, minimise the appearance of pores and increase skins luminosity! The key though is to find a shade that matches your skin tone perfectly and a formula that suits your skin type. Matte for oily skin, dewy for dry skin. To learn more about the perfect foundation for your skin type click here. Concealer If you suffer from dark circles, are prone to redness or are currently dealing with blemishes or imperfections a concealer should be your go to for touching up your skin! Opt for one that provides full coverage without caking, blending seamlessly into your skin for a natural finish. Blush & Bronzer A blush or bronzer will really enhance your features adding to that flawless finish. They add warmth and dimension to your face. Blush gives your cheeks a healthy glow, while bronzer contours your features for a sun-kissed look. Illuminator or highlighter An illuminator be it stick, powder or cream, will create a natural highlight, and gives skin a fresh, delicate glow, perfect for a brighter appearance! Apply to cheekbones, brow bones, and cupid's bow. Setting your makeup is essential To ensure your makeup stays put all day, setting products are essential! You can opt for a translucent powder which can help control shine while setting your foundation, or simply use a setting spray to lock your makeup in place, preventing smudging and fading. The finishing touches If it’s a complete look you’re going for, you’ll want to finish off with a few other makeup essentials. Eyebrows Well-groomed eyebrows frame your face so youll want to invest in a good eyebrow product, be it a precision pencil or a brow balm. Eyeshadow Eyeshadow enhances your eyes by adding depth, dimension, and colour. It can highlight your eye shape and complement your overall look too! Choose a neutral eyeshadow palette for an everyday look. Mascara Mascara accentuates your eyes by defining, lengthening, and volumizing your lashes, making them appear fuller and more defined.  Lipstick or Lip Gloss Completing your makeup with a lipstick or lip gloss will add colour and dimension as well as a polished finish to your face. These products help define your lips, making them stand out and balancing the overall makeup. Whether you opt for a bold lipstick or a subtle gloss, both will enhance your features and tie the entire look together. Plus, they can complement your outfit, mood, or the occasion! And remember don't underestimate the power of good tools. Invest in quality makeup brushes and sponges for a smooth, streak-free application. Proper tools can make all the difference in achieving a professional finish.
The best skincare routine for oily skin

The best skincare routine for oily skin

by Jo Boyden on Aug 09 2024
If you have oily skin, you’ll know the struggle of managing shine and breakouts all too well. But having oily skin doesn't have to be a daily battle! With the right skincare routine, you can control excess oil, minimize the appearance of pores, and keep your skin looking fresh and balanced throughout the day! Whether you're dealing with midday shine, frequent blemishes or seasonal flare-ups, keep reading for the best skincare routine for oily skin so you can achieve a clear, matt and healthy complexion all year round. What is oily skin? Caused by genetics, dehydrated skin and overactive sebaceous glands producing excess sebum, oily skin is a common skin type that leaves you with a slick shine (or greasy appearance). People with oily skin often struggle with large pores too which can get easily clogged with sweat and oils, this is why oily skin has a tendency to breakout where pores are more prominent such as the cheeks and T-zone. The best skincare routine for oily skin Step 1: Start with a purifying cleanser As with any skin type, perfecting your skincare routine is paramount. First things first, prep your skin with a good cleanser formulated with ingredients that will help reduce excessive oil and prevent the plugging of pores that can lead to acne breakouts! Niacinamide is a game-changes for oily skin! It’s a versatile and powerhouse skincare ingredient that works to regulate excess sebum production and to possibly even lower your skin’s sebum excretion over time! Plus, niacinamide is also packed with antibacterial properties - all while keeping things gentle for your skin. We recommend: Naturys Purifying Mousse. Its beautifully light, ideal for daily cleansing and is formulated with the purifying properties of niacinamide to thoroughly, yet gently cleanse skin removing excess oil, dirt, grime and impurities. The result? Skin feels beautifully fresh and baby soft! How to use: Apply over the damp skin and massage gently into skin morning and night. Rinse with warm water. Step 2: Use a Hydrating serum Just as with any skin type, oily skin needs nourishment and serums are perfect for that because they are lightweight and easily absorbed. Just be sure to use a non-greasy serum! A purifying serum formulated with niacinamide, and hyaluronic acid will keep your skin well-hydrated while helping to balance your oil production too! We recommend: Naturys Deep Purifying Serum. Containing a purifying complex of niacinamide, bakuchiol, hyaluronic acid, peptides and vitamin c, this serum, specifically designed for oily skin is both nourishing and soothing. Enriched with olive oil microcapsules that melt when in contact with the skin, it helps correct overproduction of sebum, enlarged pores, acne and skin prone to redness. Crazy right? How to use: Apply a few drops to clean skin in the morning and evening, lightly massaging with circular movements to absorb the microcapsules. Step 3: Always apply moisturiser Now that you’ve applied your serum, it’s imperative you properly moisturise your skin too. One of the biggest misconceptions about oily skin is that it doesn’t need moisturiser. Contrary to popular belief moisturising does not make oily skin worse. Moisturising actually helps to regulate oil production! Often people who struggle with oily skin, don’t give their skin the nourishment it needs and in turn cause their skin to dehydrate, their skin then tries to compensate by producing too much oil! And there we have ourselves a vicious cycle. The key is to find a lightweight moisturiser specifically targeted to oily skin types that won’t clog pores or leave a greasy residue. We recommend: Naturys Face Cream Age-Purifying. It's anti-ageing and the ideal solution for oily skin! Formulated with bakuchiol, niacinamide and peptides it balances skin, keeps oil at bay, reduces enlarged pores, purifies the skin and battles imperfections! Oh and it reduces wrinkles and signs of ageing too! How to use: Use morning or evening all over your face and neck and décolleté, after thoroughly cleansing skin. Step 4: Don’t forget your sunscreen As a general rule of thumb, sunscreen should be the last product you apply. It's also important to ensure you allow the rest of your products to properly absorb before adding sunscreen on top. We recommend waiting a few minutes after you've applied your last skincare product. We know many sunscreens can feel greasy on the skin so clearly that’s the last thing you want to apply to your already oily face right? But I’m here to preach to you the importance of sunscreen for all skin types and that it’s, unfortunately, necessary to wear every. single. day come rain or shine. Just make sure if your skin is oily to look for lighter oil free sunscreens that won’t feel heavy on your skin. We recommend: Hubislab - Post Rays UV Protect Sun Block SPF50+ PA+++ Ideal for all skin types including oily skin, this high factor sunscreen provides complete UV and antioxidant protection while preventing dryness, dullness and hyperpigmentation. Rich in Acetyl Hexapeptide-8 and hydrolysed collagen it keeps skin nourished, healthy and elastic, while the invisible matte formula applies smoothly and stays on all day! How to use: Apply a generous amount of sunscreen to your face and neck every morning, even on cloudy days. Step 5: Once or twice a week exfoliate skin Oily skin responds well to physical exfoliation because when those dead skin cells are removed, oil is less likely to get trapped and therefore less likely to cause breakouts. Just make sure you avoid over-exfoliating as it can lead to redness and irritation. We recommend: Naturys Purifying Peeling AHA Solution. Formulated with Mandelic acid, Alpha Hydroxy Acids, Tartaric acid and Lemon extract, this effective exfoliant solution promotes cell turnover and regenerates oily skin. Using this product regularly (once or twice a week), stimulates microcirculation and the physiological production of collagen and hyaluronic acid. How to use: Apply to skin, leave on for 10-12 minutes, massage gently and remove the product with warm water.   Additional step: Use a face mask If you have oily skin, we highly recommend that once a week, you use a treatment mask. Masks formulated with clay and charcoal are best for oily skin types as they naturally draw out impurities and absorb excess oil while calming any irritation, oh and they will ensure your skin feels 100 % refreshed a squeaky clean! Now that you’ve completed your skincare routine for oily skin, here’s a few tips when it comes to your makeup! Use a primer! You wont regret it. If you’re a lover of foundation but are a little over it sliding off your face as the day goes on, you need to introduce a primer into your life! A good primer can be a godsend for those with oily skin, not only because it helps makeup last longer but a good mattifying primer will also tackle areas of high shine, soften the appearance of fine lines and pores too! We recommend: ELES’s Pore Perfecting Face Primer. It's a light-textured, skin smoothing, oil-free primer that not only combats shine but absorbs oil and reduces the appearance of pores and wrinkles at the same time! The result – flawless looking foundation as soon as it’s applied, and it will stay put all day long too! How to use: Smooth over clean, moisturised skin. Apply mineral matte foundation If you are prone to oily skin, it’s best to steer clear of foundation with a dewy finish and instead opt for a matte, semi-matte powder or oil-free foundation. A handy powder compact should be the one staple in your beauty bag, that can come with you wherever you go for those times you need to do a little ‘touch up’. Just be sure to avoid illuminating powder with shimmer as this will only draw attention to skin texture and exacerbate pore size. Instead, opt for a translucent pore-minimising and oil-absorbent powder. Mineral makeup works wonders on oily skin because the particles tend to absorb moisture, preventing shine. We recommend: ELES Mineral Powder Foundation this best-selling foundation enables you to adjust your coverage from a translucent powder to a buildable coverage foundation with a richer, more opaque finish. What’s more, it’s formulated with skin loving ingredients including vitamins A & E, so it’ll provide antioxidant protection as well as condition skin! Oh and it will not clog your pores! How to use: Swirl a large powder brush onto powder and tap off excess. Apply over entire face in circular motions for best coverage. If power isn’t your thing and you’re a lover of liquid foundations but are concerned about slippage, fear not, weve got the foundation for you! We recommend: ELES Liquid Powder Mineral Foundation is ELES’s global best-seller for many a reason! One being its long-lasting staying power no matter what your skin condition. It’s packed with goodness including an exclusive multi mineral complex as well as vitamins A, C & E but its formula while it goes on as a silky liquid, sets to a soft powder finish, perfect for those with combination and oily skin. What’s more, it allows skin to breathe freely, so it won’t clog up those pores leading to unwanted blemishes! How to use: Apply directly onto moisturised skin or over a face primer. Using a foundation brush or problender sponge, sweep onto skin starting at the centre of the face and blending outward and down to the neck. Just remember consistency is key when it comes to managing your oily skin. Stick to your routine, and over time, you’ll notice a reduction in oiliness and breakouts! With the right products and a consistent routine, oily skin can be kept under control, giving you a clear, radiant complexion.

Hydrolyzed Collagen: The Building Block of Youthful Skin Collagen is the most abundant protein in our skin, responsible for its strength and elasticity. As we age, our collagen production dramatically decreases, leading to sagging skin and wrinkles. Hydrolyzed collagen, a form where collagen molecules are broken down into smaller, easily absorbed peptides, helps to replenish the skin's collagen supply. This boosts skin hydration, improves elasticity, improves skin’s texture and reduces the appearance of fine lines, giving you a plumper, more youthful complexion. With its ability to strengthen the skin barrier, hydrolyzed collagen protects against environmental stressors and promotes a more resilient complexion. This makes it a valuable ingredient in anti-ageing and hydrating skincare products. Try: Hubislab Premium Active Revival Essence Formulated with hydrolyzed collagen, asiaticoside and madecassoside this silky soft, soothing complex delivers deep, long-lasting moisture and softer, smoother, younger looking skin! Dipotassium Glycyrrhizate: The Soothing Agent Derived from licorice root, dipotassium glycyrrhizate is a powerful anti-inflammatory and soothing ingredient. It helps reduce redness, irritation, and sensitivity, making it ideal for those with delicate skin. Additionally, it aids in maintaining the skin’s natural moisture balance and can improve the appearance of dry, damaged skin. By calming inflammation and supporting skin health, dipotassium glycyrrhizate contributes to a smoother, more even complexion. Try: ELES Calming & Soothing Sheet Mask Drenched in a plethora of soothing, anti-inflammatory natural ingredients including dipotassium glycyrrhizate, niacinamide, centella asiatica extract, aloe barbadensis leaf extract, green tea, lavender and more, this professional strength sheet mask provides skin with a quick, much needed dose, of nourishment. Calming and soothing it effectively reduces inflammation and redness. For everything there is to know about sheet masks. It improves the skin's barrier function (by locking in moisture and improving hydration levels), enhances elasticity, and helps to fade hyperpigmentation and age spots, promoting a more even and radiant complexion. Niacinamide also reduces inflammation and redness, making it perfect for sensitive or acne-prone skin. This multifaceted ingredient also regulates sebum production, helping to minimize pores and improve overall skin texture. Its antioxidant properties further protect the skin from environmental damage, supporting long-term skin health and resilience. With its ability to improve skin texture, tone, and overall resilience, niacinamide is a foundation of effective anti-ageing skincare. Try; New Vie Collection Serum De Vie – High Performance Youth Concentrate. This multi-tasking and richly hydrating serum works at a cellular level to protect skin cells and restore a more youthful appearance. An EGF-like peptide enhances cell division to smooth wrinkles, while niacinamide slows the transfer of melanin to key parts of your skin to fade the look of dark spots. Bakuchiol: Nature’s Retinol Alternative Often dubbed as a natural alternative to retinol, bakuchiol is derived from the seeds and leaves of the Psoralea corylifolia plant. Unlike retinol, which can cause irritation and dryness, bakuchiol is gentle on the skin while still delivering powerful anti-ageing benefits. It helps stimulate collagen production, reduce fine lines, and improve skin elasticity, making it a go-to ingredient for those seeking a natural yet effective anti-ageing solution. Try; Naturys Anti-Age No Age Fluid Cream This fast absorbing, beautifully light fluid cream is not only formulated with bakuchiol but also peptides and vitamin c, making it a powerhouse antioxidant product perfect for preserving skins youthfulness! The ultimate skincare routine for sensitive skin

The ultimate skincare routine for sensitive skin

by Jo Boyden on Jul 04 2024
If you have sensitive skin, you’ll know how challenging it can be to find the right skincare products that actually work and don’t just exacerbate your already inflamed skin! Redness, irritation, and dryness can make it seem next to impossible to achieving that calm, radiant complexion you so wish for, but impossible it is not! With the right approach and gentle products, you can soothe your sensitive skin and maintain its overall health. Keep reading for our guide to the ultimate skincare routine for sensitive skin. A guide we’ve tailored just for you, featuring must-have products and tips to keep your sensitive skin happy and healthy. Firstly though, why are you suffering from sensitive skin? Unfortunately sensitive skin can be caused by a variety of factors. It might be due to genetics (thanks mum and dad!), making your skin more reactive to certain triggers. Environmental factors such as pollution, extreme weather conditions, and exposure to harsh chemicals can also contribute. Over exfoliated skin or simply overuse of skincare products, especially those with strong fragrances or alcohol, can strip the skin's natural barrier, leading to sensitivity. Stress and hormonal changes can also play a significant role, disrupting the skin's balance. Additionally, underlying skin conditions like eczema or rosacea can cause heightened sensitivity. It’s best to try and identify and avoid your triggers (along with using gentle skincare products) to help manage your sensitive skin. The best skincare routine for sensitive skin Step 1: Start with a Gentle Cleanser The first step in any skincare routine is cleansing, but for sensitive skin, it's crucial to use a gentle, fragrance-free cleanser that doesn’t strip away natural oils. Opt for a fragrance-free, non-foaming cleanser with soothing and healing ingredients like aloe vera, glycerin, niacinamide and chamomile. Try: Naturys 2 in 1 Makeup Remover + Micellar Gel. Formulated with nasturtium and niacinamide, this natural 2-in-1 cleanser and makeup remover is good or all skin types but has been specifically targeted for sensitive skin. Gently but effectively it removes makeup, dirt and impurities from face and eyes without causing any irritation or dryness, leaving skin instantly fresh, soothed and more supple. How to Use: Use your fingertips to apply the cleanser and gently massage onto your face in circular motions. Rinse with lukewarm water and pat your skin dry with soft towel to avoid further irritation. Step 2: Hydrating Oil Oils are like potent treatments that target specific concerns deeply nurturing the skin. For sensitive skin, choose an oil that focuses on hydration and calming effects. Try: Naturys Sensitive Hydra Oil. This quick-absorbing soothing face oil is particularly suitable for sensitive skin types and is the best ally against skin redness and irritation, signs of stress, pollution and blue light. Rich in plant-based active ingredients, including blueberry oil, bisabolol, and lycopene, it protects skin from environmental damage while diffusing redness and discomfort. How to Use: Apply a few drops to clean, dry or slightly damp face and neck, gently patting it into your skin until fully absorbed. Can be used alone or mixed with your moisturiser. Step 3: Moisturiser Moisturising is essential for locking in hydration and protecting your skin barrier. Choose a moisturiser that is free from fragrances, dyes, and other potential irritants and instead opt for nourishing, soothing ingredients that will hydrate, calm and improve skin. Try: Naturys De-Sensitive Cream. The perfect antidote for reactive and dehydrated skin prone to redness, this beautifully nourishing cream effectively calms skin while combatting redness. Copper Tripeptides also help promote collagen and elastin production, firming the skin and reducing fine lines while increasing oxygen supply for more supple skin. How to Use: Apply the moisturiser to your face and neck, gently massaging it in until fully absorbed. Step 4: Sunscreen Sunscreen is a non-negotiable step in any skincare routine. But sadly sensitive skin is particularly vulnerable to sun damage so sunscreen is a must. Sensitive skin needs broad-spectrum protection without harsh chemicals. A mineral-based sunscreen is less likely to irritate and provides effective protection. Look for ingredients like zinc oxide or titanium dioxide. Try: Hubislab Post Rays UV Protect Sun Block SPF 50+++. Not only is it formulated with both zinc oxide and titanium dioxide so perfect for sensitive and ageing skin since zero irritation, it’s also rich in hydrolyzed Collagen and peptides keeping skin nourished, soft and supple! Its invisible matte formula also applies smoothly and stays on all day long! How to Use: Apply a generous amount of sunscreen to your face and neck every morning, even on cloudy days. Step 5: Weekly Treatment – Exfoliator A weekly treatment like an exfoliator can provide essential extra care for sensitive skin. And I know you might be thinking exfoliating sounds counterintuitive, after all you don’t want to exacerbate your already irritated skin, right? The thing is exfoliating is essential for everyone, no matter your skin type. Why? Because it removes dulling dead skin cells, prevents clogged pores and encourages cell turnover, you just have to be careful what sort of exfoliator you use! Try: Naturys Sensitive Enzymatic Peeling Cream. Formulated for all skin types including those suffering with common skin sensitivities, this exfoliant and regenerating cream gently removes dead cells and unclogs the pores without causing any irritation. As you work the cream into your skin, the pineapple and papaya enzymes, combined with AHAs and rice microgranules, gently but deeply exfoliate skin eliminating impurities, blackheads, dead cells, sebum and toxins. Your complexion after? Softer, smoother, calmer and brighter! How to Use: Apply the peel 1-2 times a week onto the face and delicately massage. Leave on for 5-7 minutes and rinse with warm water. Avoid the eye contours. Additional tips for sensitive skin Patch Test New Products: Always test new products on a small area of your skin before applying them to your entire face to ensure you don’t have an adverse reaction. Avoid Harsh Ingredients: Steer clear of products with alcohol, fragrances, and harsh exfoliants. Look for labels that indicate "hypoallergenic" and "non-comedogenic." Stay Hydrated and Maintain a Healthy Diet: Drinking plenty of water and eating a balanced diet rich in antioxidants can help support your skin's health. Remember taking care of sensitive skin doesn’t have to be daunting. By following this ultimate skincare routine and using gentle, effective products, you can reduce irritation, strengthen your skin barrier, and achieve a calm, radiant complexion. Remember consistency and patience are key!
Skin Minimalism: Simplifying your routine for radiant results

Skin Minimalism: Simplifying your routine for radiant results

by Jo Boyden on Jun 28 2024
In the quest for flawless skin, it’s easy to get caught up in the hype of multi-step routines and the many “game-changing” products. But what if achieving that coveted complexion was simpler than we actually thought? Enter skin minimalism, the latest trend that’s making waves in the beauty world by embracing the philosophy that less is more. If you find your current routine isn’t working as you’d wished or your skin feels burdened by the layers of products, you’re applying daily, it might be time to embrace the minimalist approach. Keep reading as we discuss all there is to know about skin minimalism and why it might be the right routine for your skin. What is Skin Minimalism? Skin minimalism, or "skinimalism," as its also known, is a back-to-basics approach to skincare that focuses on using fewer, high-quality products that meet your skins essential needs to deliver real results. It's about understanding your skin's needs and cutting out the excess. Instead of following a 10-step k-beauty routine (which still works for some!) you might only use three or four products that deliver maximum benefits and results. What are the benefits of Skin Minimalism? Simplified routine One of the biggest benefits of skin minimalism is its simplicity. A minimalist routine typically involves three to four core products: a cleanser, moisturiser, sunscreen, and a targeted serum or treatment tailored to your skin’s specific needs. This covers all the essential steps of a good skincare routine but without overwhelming your skin! This streamlined approach can also be more manageable with regards to both time and money and makes it easier to stay consistent. Cost effective Focusing on fewer, high-quality products means you can invest in formulations that truly work for your skin. Instead of spending on a plethora of products, you invest in a select few formulated with the best ingredients, that work effectively to offer real benefits. This approach is not only cost-effective but also sustainable, reducing waste and consumption. Less irritation Using too many products can overwhelm your skin, leading to irritation, redness, and breakouts. Skin minimalism helps reduce the risk of these issues by minimizing the number of ingredients your skin is exposed to. This is especially beneficial for those with sensitive or reactive skin. Enhanced results Fewer products in your routine, means the active ingredients in the 3 or 4 you do have, have a better chance to penetrate and benefit your skin without interference from other products. This means you’re likely to see better results with less effort. Better skin health A minimalist routine allows your skin to maintain its natural balance. By not overloading it with products, you give your skin the chance to function properly and repair itself. This can lead to healthier, more resilient skin over time. What does a skinimalism routine look like? Step 1. Cleanser As the first step in your routine, the cleanser thoroughly cleans skin, removing any makeup and grime from your pores and setting the foundation for the products to follow, allowing them to easily and effectively penetrate the skin from maximum efficacy. Make sure you choose a gentle, effective cleanser that removes impurities without stripping your skin of its natural oils. Try; Phytomer Doux Visage Velvet Cleansing Cream. This ultra-gentle and hydrating cleansing cream not only gently and effectively removes dirt, oil and makeup without drying skin, but will also soften and brighten your complexion after the very first application.  Step 2. Moisturiser Hydration is key for healthy skin. Choose a moisturiser designed to suit your specific skin type and needs. For oily skin opt for a lightweight moisturiser for dry skin a richer formulation will be best. Try; Dehydrated Skin: Marine Collagen Cream  This global best-seller is a gorgeously rich, yet fine cream that feels amazing on application and really does leave skin super soft, supple and like it’s had that much-needed boost of moisture, a feeling that lasts all day! Combination to Oily Skin: Naturys Face Cream Age Purifying The perfect anti-ageing treatment cream for oily and combination skin. Bakuchiol rebalances the sebaceous gland activity, purifies the skin, and removes imperfections. Used regularly, this effective cream reduces progressively enlarged pores and shiny areas. It also reduces wrinkles and signs of ageing, purifying and smoothing the skin. Ageing skin: Vie Collection Time Control Deep Wrinkles Firming Rich Cream Created in conjunction with a respected Cosmetic Surgeon to not only enhance the results of interventions such as BotoxTM and Fillers but also as an alternative for those who would prefer not to have cosmetic medical procedures. This creamy textured wrinkle cream is highly concentrated with advanced anti-ageing and nourishing ingredients including pro-collagen peptides, EGF-like peptides, trace elements and minerals to effectively help to enhance skin elasticity, reduce the appearance of deep wrinkles and soothe the discomfort that thin and mature skin types can experience. You’ll notice immediate results as skin feels and appears smoother, softer and more supple and after continued use wrinkles are visibly filled and skin is noticeably firmer. Outstanding! Sensitive skin: Pevonia Soothing Sensitive Skin Cream There is nothing not to love about this product if you are a sufferer of sensitive skin. This cream will quite literally calm and control hypersensitivity. Formulated with soothing and healing propolis, aloe, shea butter, and chamomile, it alleviates and harmoniously corrects skin’s blotchiness and irritability. Targeted treatment Depending on your skins needs, a targeted treatment such as a serum or ampoule with active ingredients such as vitamin c, hyaluronic acid or retinol can be a game-changing step in your routine. Just remember to use just one targeted serum or treatment at a time. Its fine to use eg. Vitamin C in the morning and retinol at night. Or better still stick to one serum which is formulated with a number of key ingredients. Try: Hubislab's range of outstanding ampoules. The Ampoule Line is an array of concentrated serums designed to quickly boost moisture and nutrient levels and to increase the skin’s elasticity from deep within. It provides complete hydration, strengthens the skin’s natural defences, and guards against moisture loss for 12 to 36 hours. What’s more there is an ampoule for every skin concern.  Sunscreen The final and most important step to your skincare routine is your sunscreen, this is because protecting your skin from UV damage is a non-negotiable. Sunscreen should always come at the end of your skincare routine since products with SPF are specifically formulated with certain sun-protective ingredients, layering one on after your moisturiser will help block out any harsh rays. Opt for a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30 and make it a daily habit. Try; Pevonia’s YouthRenew Tinted Cream. It’s broad-spectrum SPF 30, lightweight, age-defying, hydrating, pore refining and brightening! It feels amazing on application (no greasy feeling or white residue!) and has a lovely subtle tint. Tips for embracing skin minimalism Understand your skin and evaluate your current routine Before doing anything else, you need to start by assessing your current skin routine. Are these the products for your skins needs? Identify which products are truly necessary and which ones you can and perhaps should eliminate. By understanding your specific skin type and concerns, you can choose the products that address these needs. Declutter Now you know which products are a necessity you can start clearing out products you rarely use or that have expired. Focus on quality over quantity. Be consistent Stick to your routine and give it time to show results. Consistency is key in any skincare routine. Know your ingredients Educate yourself about ingredients and their benefits. This will help you make informed choices about which products to keep in your routine. Prioritize quality over quantity Invest in high-quality products with proven ingredients. While they might be pricier, they often deliver better results and last longer. Choose multifunctional products Look for products that offer multiple benefits. For instance, a moisturizer with SPF or a serum that both hydrates and brightens can help streamline your routine. Pay attention to your skin Pay attention to how your skin responds to the simplified routine. Adjust as needed, but resist the urge to add unnecessary products. Your skin’s needs can change over time, so remain flexible and responsive. Ready to simplify your skincare routine? Start now with skin minimalism.

Peptides

Peptides: How this ingredient is transforming skincare

by Jo Boyden on May 03 2024
You’ve probably heard about Peptides, another key ingredient we are told to incorporate into our everyday skincare routine! But when we are already slathering on Vitamin C, Retinol, Collagen, Niacinamide (and more!) in our quest to defy premature ageing and achieve healthy, glowing skin, why are peptides so essential too? Keep reading as we uncover all there is to know about peptides and how these unsung heroes can help to transform your complexion. Firstly though, what are peptides?Hailed as the key to achieving, youthful, radiant skin, peptides are short chains of amino acids, the building blocks of proteins, including collagen, elastin and keratin, crucial for maintaining skin structure and elasticity. What do peptides do for your skin? These small but mighty molecules are gaining recognition for their remarkable ability to address various signs of ageing, making them a coveted ingredient in skincare formulations. As we age, our production of collagen, elastin and keratin decline, leading to fine lines, wrinkles and sagging skin. Peptides work by signalling the skin to produce more of these proteins replenishing what’s lost and in turn helping to restore a more youthful complexion! Clever stuff hey?Key benefits of peptides in skincare: Peptides boost collagen production Peptides stimulate collagen synthesis, promoting firmer, plumper skin and reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Peptides enhance skin elasticity By supporting elastin production, peptides help improve skin elasticity, leading to a smoother and more youthful-looking complexion. Peptides improve skin texture Peptides can help refine skin texture, minimizing the appearance of pores and promoting a smoother, more even skin tone. Peptides hydrate and nourish Some peptides have moisturising properties, helping to hydrate the skin and maintain its barrier function, preventing moisture loss and enhancing overall skin health. Peptides protect against environmental damage Certain peptides have antioxidant properties, defending the skin against free radicals and environmental stressors, which can accelerate skin ageing. How to incorporate peptides into your skincare routineLook for skincare products containing peptides, such as serums, moisturisers, and eye creams. These products are formulated to deliver peptides directly to the skin, maximizing their effectiveness. Incorporate them into your daily skincare routine, applying them after cleansing and toning, and before moisturising. Consistency is key to seeing visible results, so use peptide-rich products regularly to reap their full benefits. Can you layer peptides with vitamin c and other key ingredients?Overall, peptides work well with other key skincare ingredients including vitamin c, niacinamide, retinol, antioxidants and hyaluronic acid, and can generally be layered with them to address multiple skin concerns and achieve optimal results. However, layering peptides with AHAs (alpha hydroxy acids) is not advisable as the AHAs will actually make the peptides work less efficiently. Are peptides good for all skin types including sensitive skin?Peptides can be beneficial for all skin types, including sensitive skin, when used in appropriate formulations and concentrations. Since peptides are generally gentle and well-tolerated by most skin types, they are less likely to cause irritation or sensitivity reactions. Peptides can offer valuable benefits for sensitive skin, such as improving hydration, enhancing skin barrier function, and promoting a more youthful complexion. However, it's essential to choose peptide products that are specifically formulated for sensitive skin and free from potential irritants such as fragrances, dyes, and harsh preservatives. The peptide skincare products we are loving:Naturys Anti-Age Multi-Peptide Serum - Formulated with hyaluronic acid, this product packs a punch when it comes to hydration but thanks to its additional combination of nourishing and anti-ageing ingredients including an array of peptides and vitamin C, it leaves your skin softer, smoother and visibly radiant too. What’s more, it’s packed with a plethora of goodies from of course peptides to Hyaluronic acid and Botulinum-derived component, an Ingredient that is similar to Botox! No wonder the wrinkles around my eyes have practically disappeared!ELES Blue Light Radiant BB Cream. This outstanding BB Cream might be classed as makeup, but it’s packed with a powerhouse of skincare goodies including peptides, vitamin c, niacinamide, hyaluronic acid, and vitamin e!Multi-tasking it protects, primes, tints, nourishes, evens out skin tone and helps to strengthen skin and its game-changing formula shields skin from not only from damaged UV rays but blue light from our devices too!Not just another BB Cream, this BB Cream will improve your skin's elasticity while softening the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and will leave skin with a long-lasting radiant glow every time you apply. It's brilliant!By incorporating peptide-rich skincare products into your routine, you can rejuvenate and revitalize your complexion, revealing a smoother, firmer, and more radiant appearance.
Sensitive skin, rosacea or redness? Which do you have?

Sensitive skin, rosacea or redness? Which do you have?

by Jo Boyden on Apr 12 2024
Suffering from sensitive skin? Or is it rosacea perhaps? or maybe you are just prone to frequent redness and facial flushing? Identifying which of these common skin concerns you may have can be somewhat confusing, especially since they often share similar symptoms. But understanding their differences is essential as each condition can affect the skin in various ways!Keep reading as we outline the differences between sensitive skin, rosacea and facial redness, helping you to determine the most effective treatment approach for your skin’s specific needs! ROSACEAUnderstanding RosaceaRosacea is a chronic inflammatory skin condition characterised by redness, flushing, visible blood vessels, and sometimes acne-like bumps (papules and pustules). It typically affects the central part of the face, including the cheeks, nose, chin, and forehead. While the exact cause of rosacea is unknown, factors such as genetics, environmental triggers, and an overactive immune system may contribute to its development. Common triggers include sun exposure, hot or spicy foods, alcohol, stress, and certain skincare products.Managing RosaceaUnfortunately it’s not possible to eliminate rosacea altogether but you can effectively manage it and keep symptoms at bay! To manage rosacea you need to identify and avoid your triggers that can exacerbate symptoms.Unfortunately. sun exposure is the most common trigger for rosacea. While we may all love long days at the beach, if you suffer from rosacea your skin sadly will pay a price. Not only can sunburn make flare-ups even worse, the heat from the sun can also increase your body temperature which in turn dilates blood vessels and triggers inflammation! So you’ll want to make sure you avoid direct sun exposure as much as you can and wear SPF daily. Just be sure to opt for sensitive skin formulations that won’t aggravate your rosacea.Try Hubislab Herb 8 Soothing Blemish Balm SPF 30 PA++. It soothes and regenerates sensitive skin while protecting skin against sun damage, premature skin ageing including dark spots, and other external factors. Its clever formulation of Zinc oxide, UVA and UVB protection and 8 herbal extracts also ensures the prevention of wrinkles and inflammation.Gentle skincare products formulated for rosacea prone skin, free of harsh ingredients such as fragrance, alcohol, and abrasive exfoliants, are also a must!Look for products such as rosacea serum formulated with calming and soothing ingredients like green tea, licorice extract, chamomile extract, and French rose extract. We highly recommend Pevonia’s best-selling RS2 rosacea skincare line – a soothing, calming and irritant free collection that not only alleviates redness and discomfort but also helps create a healthy skin barrier. What’s more for the month of APRIL. When you purchase the Pevonia rosacea RS2 Care Cream, you’ll receive the matching Cleanser and Lotion 50ml for FREE. When it comes to concealing rosacea symptoms, mineral makeup can be a great go-to as well. For the best makeup products for rosacea according to the BC experts click here. And finally try to relax more, stress less, reduce alcohol consumption and eliminate hot, spicy foods from your diet!Sadly stress and anxiety, alcohol and certain foods can cause rosacea symptoms to really flare up! By getting plenty of rest and practicing meditation and yoga can help to keep stress and therefore rosacea at bay. SENSITIVE SKINUnderstanding Sensitive SkinSensitive skin is a common skin condition characterised by heightened reactivity to environmental factors, skincare products, and other external irritants.Symptoms may include redness, itching, burning, stinging, and tightness.Sensitive skin can be caused by a variety of factors, including genetics, allergies, skin barrier dysfunction, and exposure to harsh chemicals or environmental pollutants.Managing Sensitive SkinSensitive skin requires gentle care and attention to maintain its health and balance. From choosing the right skincare products to adopting lifestyle habits that promote skin resilience, you can manage sensitive skin effectively.First things first, you need to manage sensitive skin by using gentle, non-irritating skincare products that are free of potential allergens, fragrances, dyes, and other irritating ingredients. Opt for mild, fragrance-free cleansers, serums and moisturisers formulated specifically for sensitive skin and pay particular attention to moisturising. You want to keep your skin hydrated and nourished with gentle, hydrating serums and moisturisers. Look for ingredients like hyaluronic acid, ceramides, and glycerin, which help maintain the skin's moisture barrier and chamomile to soothe. Our favourites: Hubislab Post Rays Chamomile Complex 70% ampoule. This deeply nourishing serum is formulated with 70% Chamomile, combined with other natural nourishing and soothing ingredients including Centella Asiatica, Hyaluronic Acid and Glycerin. It penetrates sensitive or irritated skin to calm, purify, protect and strengthen! Oh and it’s antibacterial and anti-inflammatory too!Medicalia Gentle Cream. Rich in natural Ceramides, Phospholipids, Green Tea, Glycerin and Chamomile, this calming, nourishing cream effectively infuses the skin with antioxidant, nourishing, soothing, and hydrating benefits. It almost immediately reduces skin discomfort by desensitizing and shielding skin.Phytomer Douceur Marine Soothing Moisturising Cream. This soothing and nourishing creams velvety texture leaves the skin subtly scented with an airy and bright blend of plum and bergamot. Day after day, it provides a noticeable reduction in skin redness and discomfort.Next you want to consider exfoliation. Remember exfoliating is important even if you have sensitive skin, but once a week will be sufficient. Over-exfoliating can over stimulate sensitive skin and exacerbate your already irritation condition. You’ll want to opt for gentle exfoliants with mild ingredients like fruit enzymes or polyhydroxy acids (PHAs) and avoid abrasive scrubs or harsh chemical exfoliants.Try the highly rated Phytomer Vegetal Exfoliant with natural enzymes. It’s a seriously soft, silky and subtly scented exfoliant perfect for sensitive skin and it eliminates impurities by gently removing dead skin cells with natural enzymes (so no scrubbing or irritating the skin whatsoever!) It encourages cell turnover, revealing beautifully luminous and youthful skin after every use – no jokes.Want to know more about exfoliation and sensitive skin and what to do? Click here. It’s also essential to protect your skin from harmful UV rays by wearing broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher daily, come rain, hail or shine! Choose mineral-based sunscreens containing zinc oxide or titanium dioxide, which are less likely to cause irritation. We LOVE Hubislab Post Rays UV Protect Sun Block SPF50+ PA+++ not only is it formulated with both zinc oxide and titanium dioxide so perfect for sensitive and ageing skin since zero irritation, it’s also rich in hydrolyzed Collagen and peptides keeping skin nourished, soft and supple! Its invisible matte formula also applies smoothly and stays on all day long!Additionally, maintaining a healthy lifestyle, including managing stress, staying hydrated, getting enough beauty sleep, eating a balanced diet rich in antioxidants and omega-3 fatty acids, and protecting the skin from environmental stressors can help reduce sensitivity and improve skin barrier function. FACIAL REDNESSUnderstanding RednessRedness, or erythema, is a common skin concern characterised by the appearance of red or flushed skin. It can be caused by various factors, including rosacea, sensitive skin, sunburn, allergies, irritation, inflammation, and underlying medical conditions. Redness may be temporary or chronic, depending on the underlying cause and triggers.Managing RednessManaging redness involves identifying and addressing the underlying cause. In addition to following a gentle skincare routine suitable for sensitive skin, incorporating anti-inflammatory ingredients such as green tea extract, niacinamide, and licorice root extract may help calm redness and soothe irritated skin. Sun protection is also crucial, as UV exposure can worsen redness and inflammation. When it comes to your red face you need to start with the basics – choose a mild, hydrating cleanser. Harsh cleansers can strip your skin of its natural oils, leading to increased redness and irritation. Cleanse with care, using lukewarm water to avoid shocking your skin.Try: Pevonia Sensitive Skin Cleanser. This beautifully light-textured cleanser gently removes accumulated impurities, while diffusing redness and irritation. Formulated with Chamomile and Calendula it delivers soothing, calming and desensitizing benefits to your delicate skin.If your skin redness is potentially caused by dryness or inflammation a natural face mask or sheet mask specifically formulated to cool and calm skin can work wonders too!Try: ELES Calming and Soothing Sheet Mask. Incorporating natural botanicals it soothes and reduces inflammation. Like a cool balm, this calming mask reduces redness and heat and restores a protective barrier to prevent moisture loss.WE totally understand that when you suffer from rosacea or skin redness you aren’t likely to forego makeup altogether. You do need to let your skin breath freely to reduce irritation though so its essential to opt for mineral makeup that will allow just this. Mineral makeup is non-comedogenic which means it won’t clog your pores.Try: ELES Mineral Powder Foundation. As a sufferer of want for a better word ‘flushed skin’ I personally LOVE the best-selling ELES Mineral Powder Foundation! It’s one of my all-time favourites. It’s one of the most natural-looking, if not THE most natural-looking foundations I have in fact ever tried and being in the industry for 20 years I’ve tried many! It contains zero chemical nasties, instead, it’s packed with skin loving ingredients including vitamins A & E, can be used as a buildable foundation from natural sheer to polished opaque (dependant on what you need) and it’s highly compatible with common skin sensitivities, working wonders at camouflaging facial redness while protecting skin against ultraviolet damage too! Also a makeup primer will help ensure your makeup remains in place all day! And let’s face it we don’t want our makeup to slide off our skin and reveal a flushed complexion at any point right? Plus wearing a primer also creates a barrier between your skin and your makeup therefore preventing any further irritation. If you’re prone to a flushed face we can’t get enough of ELES Retexture Crème Face Primer, it hydrates, soothes, calms and plumps skin with Aloe Barbadensis Gel, Chamomile Extract, Witch Hazel & Marigold. And finally when your face is feeling particularly fiery, try a cold compress. A soft cloth soaked in cold water can work wonders to calm redness and soothe your skin. For more of the best tips to fight the flush click here.By identifying your triggers and following a gentle yet effective skincare routine you can radically reduce rosacea, sensitive skin and facial flushing symptoms and achieve healthier, happier skin.

How Korean Skincare will transform your skin

by Jo Boyden on Mar 22 2024
I’m sure I’m correct in saying we’ve all heard about the K-beauty phenomenon! From dewy complexions to flawless makeup looks, this skincare trend is taking the beauty world by storm, but exactly what is #kbeauty and why is it trending? Well we are here to answer all your burning k-beauty questions! Keep reading as we divulge all there is to know about Korean skincare, how it will transform your complexion and the best Korean skincare products in Australia! What is k-beauty?K-beauty, short for Korean beauty, refers to the skincare and cosmetics products, techniques, and trends originating from South Korea. Renowned for its innovative formulations, advanced technology, and holistic approach to skincare, Korean skincare has gained immense popularity worldwide. It encompasses a wide range of products, including cleansers, creams, serums, essences and sheet masks, each designed to address specific skin concerns and enhance your natural beauty. K-beauty emphasizes achieving healthy, radiant skin through consistent routines, gentle ingredients, and a blend of traditional Korean philosophies and modern scientific advancements! Why is Korean skincare trending?Renowned for its innovative formulations (From traditional herbal extracts like ginseng and green tea to cutting-edge ingredients like hyaluronic acid and snail mucin), its holistic approach, and undeniable results, Korean skincare has become more than just a trend – it's a lifestyle. Korean skincare embraces the idea of "skinimalism," focusing on achieving healthy, radiant skin through a curated routine tailored to your individual needs. From double cleansing and layering multiple products to embracing sheet masks and essence, each step is carefully choreographed to cleanse, nourish and protect the skin, leaving it supple, hydrated and glowing with vitality.K-beauty’s multi-step approach has not escaped criticism though, with some claiming the use of multiple products (a 10 step routine in some cases) is “too much for the skin”. Of course this could be the case when using Western formulations which may contain a high percentage of stimulating actives, but it is important to note that Korean skincare and Western skincare are not formulated the same, and trying to use Korean philosophy with Western skincare products can be overwhelming for the skin. While Western skincare is all about targeting specific concerns with potent targeted ingredients, Korean philosophy is all about hydration and reducing inflammation that leads to ageing. So what makes Korean skincare different to western skincare? Multi-step routine Korean skincare popularized a comprehensive routine, with steps like double cleansing, toning, essence, serum, moisturizer, and sunscreen. Professional grade Korean skincare prioritise professional grade formulations using high concentrations of quality ingredients for outstanding results every time. Emphasis on hydration Korean skincare prioritizes hydration with ingredients like hyaluronic acid and ceramides, aiming for a dewy, "glass skin" look.
