Pevonia’s De-Stress Escape Aromatic Oil An essential oil for mind and body reset A favourite of ours and for very good reason, this multi-sensory oil is like serenity in a bottle! Infused with lavender, chamomile, grapefruit, rose flower oil and squalane, it instantly melts stress on contact, calming your senses, deeply hydrating, and cocooning your skin in a soothing, spa-like aroma. It’s nourishing, aromatic, and totally mood-lifting! Simply warm a few drops between your palms, inhale deeply, and gently massage it into your face, neck, and décolletage. Remember massage is one of the best stress relievers and no it doesn’t need to be at the hands of someone else, just a few minutes massaging a facial oil into your skin can induce endorphins and help relinquish stress. For an even more nurturing experience massage the oil into your skin with a gemstone facial roller. They help boost circulation, reduce puffiness, and enhance the absorption of your favourite serums and creams. Plus, the cooling sensation feels absolutely heavenly. “I love this face oil! Phytomer Oligomer Well-Being Sensation Essential Minerals Relaxing Bath is an amazing lightly foaming bath ‘sensation’ enriched with Phytomer’s iconic OLIGOMER®, a partially sodium-reduced seawater concentrate that contains all of the remineralizing properties of seawater to remineralize, strengthen, and energize the skin, releasing all pent-up tension and promoting relaxation and overall well-being. Outstanding stuff! “I’ve been using the seaweed soap in the shower for almost a year and I wanted a marine based treat to savour a bit longer, in a nice late night bath. After a very challenging day, both physically and mentally; it made me feel like I could float away. It’s so soft, you feel weightless and after I’d used up all the hot water I still wanted to stay and soak. The scent is still on my skin as I am getting ready for bed and my tired legs feel so relaxed now. Sweet dreams for me I think.” – Lisa D 3. Tired eyes? Top tips to instantly brighten dark circles

Tired eyes? Top tips to instantly brighten dark circles

by Jo Boyden on Nov 15 2024
Feeling fatigued and showing it around your eyes? I feel you! As a busy working mum of two I often find myself looking in the mirror in the morning and being shocked at how tired I look! Unfortunately dark circles can make us look older and more tired than we actually are too! But fear not, I’m here to tell you there are quick and easy ways to brighten up your under-eye area! Keep reading as we discuss why you might be waking with dark circles daily and our expert tips on how to restore a youthful glow in next to no time.   So why are you waking with dark circles? While we can all probably do with a little more sleep than we are getting, dark circles are often misunderstood as simply a result of poor quality or lack of sleep, but they can actually arise from various other factors too; Dehydration Not drinking enough water can make your skin look dull and can even cause the area around your eyes to darken, as the skin here is delicate and reacts quickly to fluid levels. Genetics and skin tone Some people are more prone to dark circles due to their genetics (thanks parents!), especially if they have fair or thin skin, which can make blood vessels under the eyes more visible. Allergies or sinus congestion Allergies and sinus issues can lead to inflammation and swelling in the blood vessels around the eyes, which may worsen dark circles. Ageing As we age, the skin loses collagen and becomes thinner, which can make dark circles more noticeable due to the skin’s reduced ability to cover blood vessels. Lifestyle Factors High-stress levels, excessive screen time, and frequent rubbing of the eyes can also contribute to darkening around the eyes.   Top tips on improving dark circles Chill out with cold compresses Cold compresses are a classic trick for a reason! The cold helps constrict blood vessels, reducing puffiness and lightening dark circles. You can use anything from chilled spoons to a gel eye mask, or even cucumber slices. Place them on your eyes for about 5-10 minutes, and you’ll notice an immediate difference in the appearance of dark circles and puffiness too.  Use brightening eye products with key ingredients Eye gels and creams can be highly effective when they contain ingredients specifically designed to target darkness and puffiness. Look for formulas that include: Vitamin C: A powerful antioxidant that brightens skin and reduces pigmentation. Caffeine: Known for its ability to reduce puffiness by shrinking blood vessels. Hyaluronic Acid: Hydrates and plumps up the skin, making dark circles less noticeable. Niacinamide: Brightens skin, strengthens the skin barrier, and reduces pigmentation and inflammation, which can make under-eye circles less noticeable. Using an eye product daily, especially one formulated with these brightening ingredients, will help your under-eye area stay hydrated and refreshed. We highly recommend; Vie Collection’s Chrono Eyes Puffiness-Dark Circles Wrinkle Cream. It’s a mouthful to say, but a product that does exactly what it says! This beautifully fine cream is enriched with moisturising and brightening ingredients including hyaluronic acid, niacinamide and vitamin c to deeply nourish and repair the delicate eye area while reversing puffiness, dark circles, and wrinkles! Oh and it instantly brightens the eye area too!   Try gentle massage with a gemstone roller By doing so you’ll help improve circulation, remove toxins from the eye area significantly improving dark circles and bags under the eyes, reduce inflammation, refresh the skin and tone your face! In fact gemstone rollers offer a multitude of other benefits too to your skin too. Click here to find out more.   Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate! Dehydration can make dark circles appear darker and cause fine lines under the eyes. Make sure you’re drinking enough water throughout the day to keep your skin hydrated. Limit screen time and take breaks If dark circles are a recurring issue, you might want to consider reducing your screen time! This is because too much of staring at your screen (and I’m sure many of us are guilt of this whether it be during the day or late into the night!) can cause eye strain and fatigue. Why is this you might be wondering! Because our screen emits blue light which is damaging to our eyes and can actually encourage fatigue and exacerbate dark circles! Try following the 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds to rest your eyes. Taking regular breaks from screens will reduce strain and keep your eyes looking brighter and fresher. Stress less Yes, that’s right, stress is a contributor to those dark circles of yours! So try to stress less! Easier said than done when you are trying to juggle so many balls, however, try to introduce a little me time into your life, time for you to relax and unwind. Read a book perhaps, listen to soothing music or even practice yoga or meditation every day. Every little helps you and those dark circles of yours! Watch your diet Try to eat a diet rich in antioxidants, vitamins, and healthy fats. Foods like leafy greens, citrus fruits, nuts, and seeds all help promote skin health, making you look and feel more rested! Use green tea bags for an antioxidant boost Green tea is rich in antioxidants and tannins, which can reduce puffiness and dark circles. Simply take two (used) green tea bags, place them in the refrigerator, and once they’re chilled, place them over your eyes for about 10 minutes. This quick and natural remedy helps tighten the skin and reduce the appearance of under-eye darkness. Really!   Get your beauty sleep We don’t all need hours and hours of sleep like some but getting enough good quality sleep is essential for keeping dark circles at bay. Aim for 7-8 hours of quality rest each night to allow your body to repair and refresh itself. Sleep with your head slightly elevated to prevent fluid buildup around the eyes, which can lead to puffiness and dark circles in the morning. Remember there is NO substitute for a good night’s sleep! Conceal smartly Concealer can work wonders for tired eyes when applied the right way. A good undereye concealer can give you complete coverage as well as make you look bright-eyed in seconds! Choose a creamy concealer in a shade that matches your skin tone or is slightly peach-toned to neutralize the blue or purple tones of dark circles. Dab a small amount on the inner corners and blend it outward for a natural look. To avoid a cakey appearance, use a lightweight, hydrating formula and only apply where you see shadows. Try  ELES Dual Action Concealer. This is my personal secret weapon for concealing dark under eye circles and helping me look like I’ve had 8 hours of blissful slumber as opposed to only 5!   Use sunscreen daily Protecting skin from sun damage can prevent darkening and worsening of circles caused by pigmentation. You’ll also want to religiously wear your sunglasses as this can make a huge difference.   Just remember dark circles don’t have to be a permanent fixture! By incorporating these quick fixes and lifestyle adjustments into your routine, I promise you’ll notice a fresher, more radiant under-eye area in no time.
24 beauty habits that are ageing you

24 beauty habits that are ageing you

by Jo Boyden on Sep 27 2024
Let's face it, we are all on the quest for radiant, youthful skin with many of us investing both our hard-earned money and time into perfecting our daily beauty routine as a result, but I’m here to tell you, that despite our best efforts the majority of us will still be making daily beauty mistakes, or following bad habits should I say, that actually add years to our face by making us look older than we actually are! Eek. From over-exfoliating to skipping sunscreen, keep reading as we count down 24 common beauty habits that could be ageing you! Remember it’s not too late to remedy this once you know the ones you are guilty of!   Wearing SPF only during the summer Let’s start with the most important habit of all, sunscreen. Not wearing SPF daily all year round is one of the biggest mistakes you can make for your skin. The suns harmful UV rays is hands down the no. 1 contributor to skin ageing so skipping your SPF is a no no. Yes, it's easy to remember to apply it when you're headed to the beach, or out and about on holiday, but so many of us skip this vital step in our everyday lives and not because we are necessarily lazy but because we don't understand the long term affect not wearing it will have on our skin! Even on cloudy days or when you’re indoors, UV rays can cause premature ageing, leading to wrinkles, dark spots, and sagging. Sun damage is cumulative, so every time you skip sunscreen, you’re speeding up the ageing process. How to fix it: Make SPF 30 or higher your daily must-have. Apply it generously every morning, and don’t forget to reapply throughout the day—especially if you’re spending time outdoors. And we understand that many sunscreens can feel oily on your skin or leave an unruly white residue that’s why we highly recommend Medicalia’s Sunscreen SPF 40 with Blue Light Shield. Thinking that the SPF in your makeup is enough to protect your skin Unless your makeup has an SPF factor of 30 or above it's unlikely to ward off premature ageing if worn alone. This is because the majority of makeup will protect against UVB rays but won't block UVA rays which is what causes skin damage. How to fix it: Layering your skin with a high factor SPF moisturiser and then foundation will give you the best chance of maintaining skin's youthful appearance, but if you are in love with your daily moisturiser which doesn't contain sun protection, use a foundation or BB Cream with a high enough SPF. We highly recommend ELES Blue Light Radiant BB Cream SPF 30. Formulated with potent ingredients including peptides, beta-carotene, amino acids, vitamin c, niacinamide, hyaluronic acid, vitamin e and vitamin c, it nourishes, brightens and protects skin against UVA and UVB, as well as blue light and free radical damage! Genius. Not updating your skincare as your skin changes You might have been loyal to the same moisturiser for many years but sadly the skincare you've used in your 20's really won't cut it in your 30's, 40's and beyond. This is because as we age our skin's needs dramatically change. Skin becomes thinner, drier, more sensitive, and loses elasticity as collagen and elastin start to deplete, while fine lines and wrinkles start to form. How to fix it: Understand your skin type and needs and choose products accordingly. Anti-ageing skincare rich in ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, collagen, and vitamin C become essential as we get older. For more info on this read about the 7 super ingredients in your skincare that are all the rage and adjust your products accordingly.   Skipping on your moisturiser It's that time of the month and a few pesky pimples have reared their ugly head, or perhaps you are often prone to adult acne or simply suffer from oily skin, so suddenly you think it best to lay off the moisturiser which must be exacerbating the issue right? Wrong. While you are likely not alone in thinking lathering up on moisturiser seems counterintuitive, everyone, no matter what your skin type or concern, needs to apply a moisturiser daily! This is because moisturiser maintains skin hydration throughout the day and therefore assists in fighting premature fine lines and wrinkles too. In fact, applying moisturiser will greatly reduce your chance of developing extreme dryness, skin sensitivity, or oiliness! Why? Dehydrated skin can lead to issues like inflammation, premature skin ageing, and even breakouts. When your skin becomes dry, your body responds by making more oil! And we all know excess oil can clog pores leading to more of those darn pesky pimples. How to fix it: Don’t skip moisturiser ever. Simply find the one that will be best for your skin type. Search BC by your skin concern and then look for the moisturiser that will be right for you. Just be sure to opt for lighter moisturisers by day, especially in the warmer months, and richer creams at night.   Focusing only on Wrinkles While we are all concerned about fine lines and wrinkles as we age, dark spots and pigmentation can actually give our complexion a dull, devitalised and in turn much older appearance too! In fact, dark spots and uneven skin tone can make us look 10 years older! How to fix it: If you suffer from hyperpigmentation ensure you introduce products specifically to help with this skin concern. We promise it'll positively impact your complexion and protect your skin too. Try Vie Collection's Mela White Radiance Brightening Essense, a triple-action daily cream that effectively acts against dark spots, free radicals, and UV. The results will speak for themselves. Ignoring eye care Unfortunately our eyes are the first area of our face to show ageing, so you need to show it love just as you would the rest of your face! Like a moisturiser, an eye cream’s main objective is to deliver brightening and anti-ageing ingredients, however in a milder, gentler, safer dose. Moisturisers tend to have a much richer consistency in comparison to their counterpart which if applied under the eyes can prove too much, resulting in irritation, allergic reactions and milia. How to fix it: Applying a good eye cream daily is essential in keeping fine, lines and wrinkles at yay! You can also buy eye creams targeted to specific eye concerns such as crow’s feet, under eye bags and dark circles. We highly recommend Vie Collection's Chrono Eyes Puffiness-Dark Circles Wrinkle Cream. A mouthful to say I know, but a product that does exactly what it says. It’s a beautifully fine cream enriched with moisturising ingredients to nourish the eye area while reversing puffiness, dark circles, and wrinkles! Seriously! Want younger looking eyes? Start wearing eye cream or eye gel today!   Rubbing Your Eyes The area around our eyes is the most delicate on our face, fact. When we are tired it's easy to fall into the trap of rubbing our eyes, but rubbing, tugging, or pulling at your eye area can cause tiny blood vessles to break resulting in dark circles that make you look tired All. Of. The. Time. How to fix it: Be mindful of your eyes. When youre tired try to leave them alone! And if you haven’t already get a good anti-ageing eye gel and eye cream for morning and night and start applying then stat!   8. Ignoring Your neck and decolletage Oh, the forgotten area! And the area of your skin which can actually age you the most! Exposed to sunlight just as much as your face, if your neck and decolletage aren't cared for daily or protected with SPF, they can end up crepey and wrinkly so much earlier than they should! Whatever you do for your face you should do for your neck and decolletage too. How to fix it: There are neck and chest specific products you can use, I personally use Phytomer's Decollete Parfait Neck and Decollete Renewing Care, it hydrates, nourishes refines and brightens skin for a more youthful appearance while smoothing wrinkles too! But there is also nothing wrong with using your daily moisturiser or a hydrating body cream instead! Just start doing it now! Forgetting your hands! We often focus all our anti-aging efforts on our face, but areas like hands can give away your age just as quickly. And I can bet your bottom dollar that many of us are not looking after this delicate area! The back of your hands have thinner skin and are often exposed to the sun and environmental damage, yet they’re frequently overlooked in our skincare routines. How to fix it: Whatever you do for your face, do for your hands! Its simple! Apply sunscreen, moisturiser, and anti-ageing products daily. We highly recommend Pevonia’s Collagen Hand Cream, its divinely nourishing and gives hands an instant lift in appearance and texture. Avoiding exfoliators It's not just fine lines and wrinkles that make you look older, having a dull uneven skin tone can easily add years to your face as well! As we age our skin's natural ability to shed dead cells declines, so without weekly exfoliation skin can become uneven, dull and lacklustre. This is why exfoliation is so imperative, and not a step that should be ignored. How to fix it: Many people are scared of exfoliation because they think their skin is too sensitive, and it will just aggravate an existing issue, but that's where natural enzyme exfoliators can be the answer. Hubislab's Pure Balance Papaya Enzyme Peeling Wash, Phytomer's Vegetal Exfoliant with Natural Enzymes and Pevonia's Enzymo Spherides Peeling Cream are formulated with natural enzymes which basically melt away dead cells so no scrubbing is needed. Just remember removing dead skin cells helps your skin properly absorb moisturiser which in turn keeps fine lines and dehydration at bay, as well as brightening skins radiance. Now, who wouldn't want that!! Or simply going overboard with exfoliating If you tend to sway the other way and love to exfoliate your skin a little too much i'm here to tell you stop it now! Over exfoliating can actually slow cell turnover and lead to irritation and inflammation. Over time, this can weaken your skin’s barrier, causing fine lines and wrinkles to appear more quickly. Your skin needs time to regenerate, and over-exfoliating can strip away essential oils and moisture, making you look older. How to fix it: Stick to exfoliation once, maybe twice a week for the best results. If you like to use an exfoliator with grains or microbeads but skin tends to be a little on the sensitive side give Pevonia's Gentle Exfoliating Cleanser a go. it’s great for those who love physical exfoliators with granules but want to steer clear of facial scrubs which could be a little harsh on the skin. It gently polishes your complexion with its unique creamy yet granular texture, formulated with jojoba beads, saponaria and chamomile, revealing a softer, smoother and brighter complexion every time! Not drinking enough water As I'm sitting here writing this, I can hold my hands up and say today so far I've only drunk 2 glasses of water when I should have in fact consumed at least a litre by now! Yes, it's fact, water, or lack of should I say is a real skin ager!! And I know I must practice what a preach! The thing is I do, but some days I will admit it's easy to forget! And when I do, I get cross with myself as I can see it in my skin! It's drier, duller and devitalised. This is because drinking 'enough' water helps the body to flush out toxins while increasing blood flow to the skin which gives it an even tone and dewy appearance! And dewy skin equals youthful skin after all! How to fix it: Aim to drink at least 8 glasses of water a day to keep your skin hydrated from the inside out. Adding water-rich foods like cucumbers and watermelon to your diet can also give your skin an extra hydration boost. Not a huge fan of water? Try a good herbal tea instead.   Yo-Yo Dieting Constantly fluctuating between losing and gaining weight can wreak havoc on your skin. Yo-yo dieting can cause your skin to stretch and lose elasticity, making it more prone to sagging and wrinkles. The loss of essential nutrients during restrictive diets can also lead to dull, unhealthy-looking skin. How to fix it: Focus on a balanced, nutrient-rich diet that supports overall health, including your skin. Healthy fats, antioxidants, and vitamins will keep your skin nourished and resilient.   Ignoring Stress Stress doesn’t just affect your mood—it can take a toll on your skin too. Stress increases cortisol, which breaks down collagen and leads to wrinkles. How to fix it: Make stress management a priority with mindfulness practices, regular exercise, and relaxation techniques. Indulging in hot showers and baths How many of us are guilty of indulging in a hot shower or simply washing our faces with water set to a high temp. Unfortunately extreme water temperatures will strip healthy natural oils from your skin quickly, making it dry and therefore age much faster. Water that's too hot can also dilate your capillaries leading to spider veins. How to fix it: For best and healthy results you should be washing with lukewarm water! Easier to achieve in the warmer months!   Not getting enough sleep....when you could get more If I had a dollar for every time I said to my husband I must get to bed early tonight because I need more sleep and am fed up of looking old and tired, I'd be a rich woman. While they say practice what you preach, I am a testament that not getting enough sleep (when I could indeed fit in another 1-2 hours a night (darn netflix!) literally does age you. Poor sleep is quite literally to blame for premature ageing, dermatitis, eczema, acne, loss of collagen and more! Scary right? So let's make a pact and try for that 8 hours + we really do need nightly. Now be sure to follow our advice to be sure you slow down the signs of ageing naturally! How to fix it: Aim for 7-9 hours of quality sleep each night to give your skin the time it needs to recover and rejuvenate.   Over doing your brows Yes, we need brows to look youthful, after all they frame the eyes and lift the face. Many of us tweezed our brows to thin lines in the 80’s only to find they never grew back so what to many of us do! Fill out our brows, but often with harsh, red toned pencils which im afraid can make us look hard and older! How to fix it: The goal is to create natural looking thicker brows like the ones we used to have. Opt for taupe colour brow products instead of warm browns, these will frame your eyes beautifully without taking over your face. Apply the brow product in soft stokes to create the illusion of natural hair. Be sure not to overfill the front part of your brow though! This area should have soft hair that graduates into more density. We recommend using the ELES Precision Brow Pencil. The soft, fine pencil allows you to perfectly line and fill your brows and the formula lasts for us to 10 hours! It’s amazing. Using the wrong tone of foundation Many foundations and BB Creams come in both warm and cool tones but remember for many of us cool tones can exacerbate signs of age! This is because they often have blue, pink, or ashy undertones, which can accentuate fine lines, wrinkles, and uneven skin texture. As skin ages, it tends to lose its natural warmth and radiance, so using a foundation with cool tones can make the complexion appear dull, flat, or even greyish too! Which in turn can also highlight dark circles or any sallowness in the skin. How to fix it: Opt for warmer tones that help counteract complexion pinkness that comes with thinning of the skin and exposure of fine capillaries. Warmer tones also conceal shadows better which means you need less concealer. We recommend using ELES Blue Light Radiant BB Cream 30, it’s packed with nature’s anti-ageing actives and leaves the skin glowing.   19. Overloading on foundation powder Face powder, when used correctly and frugally can be a fantastic makeup staple (I have been I’m in love with the ELES Mineral Powder Foundation for years!) however, no matter your skin type, too much face powder can actually age you! That’s right, it can highlight fine lines and wrinkles instead of helping to conceal them! How to fix it: Im not saying you have to totally forgo your trusty powder foundation compact, but it’s best to use powder sparingly – on your t-zone, or for quick touch-up’s, Or better still make sure you opt for a lightweight powder!   Using the wrong concealer or concealer shade As we mature and our face loses its youthful “plumpness”, shadow start to really appear under our eyes, around the nose, and at the corners of our mouth. It’s tempting to reach for a heavy duty, ultra-light shade concealer to hide these dark areas. The problem is that they just make the dark shadows look grey as opposed to concealing them! How to fix it: Opt instead for peachy toned, lightweight concealers that won’t cake on the skin and counteract the blue in the shadows. We recommend ELES Dual Action Concealer, it acts like 8 hours of sleep in a tube! We love it! Applying eye makeup that makes the eyes droop Who doesn’t love makeup! After all it can boost our confidence, enhance our natural beauty and help soften the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles! But sadly certain eye makeup techniques and products can make our eyes appear droopy as well as emphasize ageing signs as we get older! Thick, dark eyeliner, especially on the lower lash line, can make eyes look smaller and more tired. It can also draw attention to sagging skin around our delicate peepers. Then there is our eyeshadow! Eyeshadow enhances eye shape, adds depth and dimension making eyes appear more vibrant but shimmer and frosty shades while fun can settle into fine lines and wrinkles, exacerbating them and making our eyelids look more creased or droopy. How to fix it: To counteract this, opt for lighter, more neutral shades on the lids, keep eyeliner lighter, thin and lifted, and focus on lifting the upper lash line to create a more youthful, wide-eyed appearance. For your eyeliner we recommend ELES Superwear Gel Eyeliner, its soft and easy to blend out and once set won’t transfer to the lids. If you have hooded or droopy eyes here are some top tips to improve them naturally. Continuing to use that cold frosted lipstick we love As we age, similar to our skin, our lips start to lose volume and in turn fine lines start to form! Unfortunately that frosted lip colour that we once loved (and looked good) no longer does! This is because frosted lip colours enhance these lines making your lips age you even more! How to fix it: It’s time to change up your lipstick! Instead of that frosted favourite, opt for a cream or satin lipstick that will make your lips look fuller and smoother. Many of these contain moisturising molecules that plump the lips and keep them hydrated longer.   Going to bed with makeup on Well here's one you've heard many a time before! Right? From a few too many wines to being just plain old exhausted, sometimes it hard to peel yourself off your bed to go and remove your makeup but remove your makeup you must! Cleansing your face especially at night to remove not only your makeup but any remnants of the days sweat, dirt and grime is imperative for healthy skin. Not removing your makeup means your skin is unable to regenerate effectively while you sleep, pores clog, blemishes form and fatigue (ageing!) signs start to appear. Makeup can also trap dirt and pollution, which leads to oxidative stress—damaging your skin and breaking down collagen, the protein that keeps your skin firm and smooth. How to fix it: No matter how tired you are, make cleansing a non-negotiable part of your nighttime routine. Use a gentle cleanser or micellar water to remove makeup and grime, giving your skin a chance to breathe and repair while you sleep. For a fantastic makeup remover which effectively melts away makeup and grime with minimum effort try Phytomer's Doux Contour Eye and Lip Waterproof Makeup Remover. Combining the effectiveness of an oil (a trio of oils in fact) and the gentleness of a lotion, this ultra-hydrating makeup remover, eradicates even the most stubborn of lips and eye makeup fast! To read more about sleeping in makeup and what it really does to our skin click here. 24. Sleeping on your stomach or side This one might surprise you, but the way you sleep can actually affect your skin. If you regularly sleep on your stomach or side, your face gets squished against the pillow, which can lead to wrinkles over time. These “sleep lines” tend to form around the eyes, cheeks, and forehead, making you look older. Just great I hear you say! How to fix it: Try sleeping on your back to reduce pressure on your face. Investing in a silk or satin pillowcase can also help, as it causes less friction on your skin than cotton.

Drinking plenty of water keeps my skin looking plump and youthful." - Jennifer Aniston Keeping yourself hydrated both inside and out is one of the most essential tips when it comes to your skin. This is because water is vital for maintaining skin health and youthfulness. It hydrates the skin from within promoting elasticity and plumpness while reducing the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines. Hydration also supports skin cell function, collagen production, and repair processes. Additionally, water helps flush out toxins, preventing breakouts and promoting clear skin. By strengthening the skin's natural barrier, water protects against environmental damage and maintains an even skin tone. Ultimately, staying hydrated is essential for preserving the youthful appearance and vitality of our skin! Try to drink a minimum of 8 glasses of water a day and for that much needed added nourishment make sure you always moisturise morning and night! We recommend using formulations rich in hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid attracts and retains moisture, plumping and hydrating the skin. In fact the molecules can hold 1,000 times its weight in water! This helps to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, leaving the skin smooth, supple, and youthful. We are obsessed with the Pevonia Hyaluronic Acid Hydra Serum and Hyaluronic acid Hydra Mist! Do things every day that will help you de-stress “I think that anything you can do to remove stress will give you a better glow. That’s the number one answer…" Cate Blanchett Stress is an inevitable part of life, but its impact doesn’t just affect our mood, it can significantly affect the health and appearance ofour skin too! Stress triggers the release of cortisol, a hormone that can throw our skin out of whack. It can cause the increase of oil production, leading to clogged pores and breakouts. It also has the ability tobreak down collagen and elastin, causing wrinkles and sagging. Plus, stress can make skin conditions like eczema and psoriasis flare up, making our skin red, itchy, and inflamed. All these things combined can leave our complexion looking dull and tired, far from the youthful glow so many celebrities promote! That's why it's important to find ways to de-stress and take care of our skin. Whether it's through deep breathing, yoga, meditation, listening to music, or simply some self-care time, giving ourselves a break can help keep our skin looking its glowing best! Eat a diet rich in Antioxidants “I eat lots of berries; they’re full of antioxidants" - Olivia Palermo Antioxidants can do wonders for our skin! And it’s true, a rich source comes from berries! Antioxidants help fight off free radicals, which are harmful molecules that can damage our skin cells and accelerate ageing. Berries like blueberries, strawberries, and raspberries are packed with antioxidants like vitamin C and polyphenols, which can help protect our skin from environmental damage, reduce inflammation, and promote a brighter, more youthful complexion. Incorporating these colourful fruits into our diet can nourish our skin from the inside out, leaving it looking radiant and healthy. We also love antioxidant rich skincare too! Here are three of our favourites; Naturys Anti-Age Antioxidant Facial Toner, Pevonia Vitamin C Complex and Pevonia’s Micro-Retinol Essential Moisturiser Always remove makeup before bed! "I've never gone to bed without washing my face. Never in my life. Even if I'm sick, tired — heck, even if I was drunk! I might forget to take off the dress, the shoes, and the jewellery, but not the makeup. It's second nature." - Salma Hayek Not washing your face before bed can have detrimental effects on your skin. Throughout the day, dirt, oil, and environmental pollutants accumulate on our skin's surface, clogging pores and leading to breakouts. By neglecting to cleanse your face at night, these impurities remain trapped, causing inflammation and acne. Additionally, makeup left on overnight can further exacerbate these issues, as it can mix with sweat and bacteria, increasing the risk of infections and irritation. Not cleansing your face before bed also disrupts the skin's natural renewal process, hindering its ability to repair and regenerate overnight! This can result in dullness and premature ageing! So, no matter how tired or tipsy you might be, get cleansing before hitting the hay! For hassle free cleansing use an all-rounder makeup remover like Phytomer’s Doux Contour Eye and Lip Waterproof Makeup Remover. It’s a fantastic and effectively melts away makeup and grime with minimum effort! Combining the effectiveness of an oil (a trio of oils in fact) and the gentleness of a lotion, this ultra-hydrating makeup remover, eradicates even the most stubborn of lips and eye makeup fast! Always wear sunscreen "Sunscreen, every single day, rain or shine. It's the best anti-ageing product out there." - Priyanka Chopra And we 100% agree! Sunscreen is hands down the no.1 defence against premature ageing! The harmful UV rays from the sun can cause a multitude of skin issues, including wrinkles, fine lines, sunspots, and sagging skin. By wearing sunscreen daily, you can protect your skin from these damaging effects and prevent premature ageing. UV radiation damages the skin's collagen and elastin fibres, leading to loss of elasticity and firmness, which are key contributors to aging skin. Additionally, UV exposure can result in hyperpigmentation, uneven skin tone, and the formation of wrinkles and fine lines. Using a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher helps shield the skin from both UVA and UVB rays, which are responsible for different types of damage. UVA rays penetrate deep into the skin and contribute to premature aging, while UVB rays primarily cause sunburns. Consistently wearing sunscreen, even on cloudy days or during the winter months, is essential for maintaining youthful-looking skin and protecting against the harmful effects of UV radiation. Incorporating sunscreen into your daily skincare routine is one of the best ways to prevent premature aging and maintain healthy, radiant skin for years to come. We love Medicalia – Sunscreen SPF 40 with Blue Light Shield. You might be a little reluctant to wear your sunscreen dailybecause quite frankly its smell and greasy texture puts you off, but that’s because you haven’t found a sunscreen that works for you! This one I promise you are going to love! It’s perfectly lightweight and does not leave a white case or greasy residue behind! It contains an exclusive mineral formula to shield skin from harmful sun rays, blue light damage and pollution! And what’s more, the formula is reef-safe and works for all skin types and tones too! Use eye cream daily “Never skip eye cream. It’s my secret weapon against fine lines and puffiness.” Sandra Bullock Your eyes are the most delicate area on your face and the first area to really age you! A good eye cream really can be game-changing when it comes to the pursuit of longer lasting youthful skin! Exfoliation is key “I start every day by exfoliating my face, something I’ve done for the past 40 years. I feel like it’s really contributed to my skin feeling fresh and smooth. Forty years ago, I read an article that said men always look five years younger than women who are their same age. They contributed that to them shaving every day, and the daily exfoliating with shaving making their skin look younger. I was like, I’m not going to let them get away with that!" Christie Brinkley Exfoliation is definitely key when it comes to skin looking younger! After all exfoliation promotes cell turnover, improving skin texture, and enhancing radiance. It also unclogs pores preventing breakouts while helping other products in your skincare routine absorb more effectively into skin. Just remember not every skin type can tolerate daily exfoliation and it depends on the exfoliator you use too! Its best to start slowly by exfoliating once or twice a week and if skin tends to be a little sensitive opt for fruit enzyme exfoliators which won’t irritate skin. Over-exfoliating or using harsh scrubs can strip the skin of its natural oils and lead to inflammation, redness, and sensitivity. Try incorporating facial massage into your daily skincare routine “Facial massages to boost blood flow and keep your skin looking fresh.” - Julia Roberts We couldn’t agree more! Facial massage offers a multitude of benefits for the skin, we just need to find the time to incorporate it into our day! Firstly, facial massage promotes improved circulation, delivering oxygen and essential nutrients to the skin while removing toxins. This enhanced blood flow results in a brighter, more radiant complexion, as well as improved skin tone and texture! Facial massage also stimulates the lymphatic syst

Top tips to improve under eye crepiness

by Jo Boyden on Sep 01 2023
If like me, you’re in your 40’s (or older), you may have fallen victim to under eye crepiness – that undesirable loose, wrinkled skin that can make you look tired, but also older than you actually are! This is because as we age the collagen and elastin levels in our skin starts to decline, as it does the delicate skin around our eyes (one of the first and most prevalent areas to show premature ageing) becomes dryer and thinner, and well crepey! Luckily all is not lost though! There are a number of steps you can take to improve its appearance, and we aren’t talking chemical peels, dermal fillers, laser and Botox, no siree, we are all about natural, non-intrusive alternatives. Keep reading as we reveal them all!Firstly though, why might you be more susceptible to under eye crepiness? The most common cause of fine lines, wrinkles and crepey skin under your eyes is unfortunately ageing, which can of course be influenced by genetics (thank you Mum and Dad!) But other common contributing factors which may be possible to avoid include;UV radiation – exposure to UV rays accelerates the breakdown of collagen leading to premature ageing, this is why it’s essential to protect our peepers! If you don’t wear sunnies every single day like you do your sunscreen, you should now!Smoking – smoking exposures your skin to extra oxidative stress, in turn damaging its collagen and elastin. Smoking also constricts the blood vessels under your eyes by blocking circulation to your blood vessels and depriving your skin of necessary vitamin A.Environmental factors - environmental factors, such as dry weather, wind, and pollution can all contribute to undereye ageing.Pulling repetitive expressions – well I’m definitely guilty of this! Facial expressions, like smiling, frowning, and furrowing your brow, can cause fine lines to develop prematurely around your delicate eye area. Eek!Even the way we sleep can have a negative impact on our eyes! What you might say? Yup, if you sleep with your face buried in your pillow (guilty as charged) you are likely to be more prone to premature fine lines, wrinkles and eye crepiness, than those that don’t! Aghhh. How can you improve undereye crepiness?Although crepey skin will not disappear overnight, it can be drastically improved with time, the right anti-aging products, as well as lifestyle changes. It can take weeks or even months to see results, but by following these top 10 tips you can bid adieu to that saggy, sullen, crepey skin under your eyes. Stay hydrated. All. The. Time. Yes, you’ve heard it a million times before, drink all the water. Hydration is key my friends. Make sure you are drinking enough water throughout the day (we’re talking 8 glasses minimum). When you drink water, it’s like giving your skin a drink from the inside out too (and that water has to nourish all your other vital organise too! Treat sunscreen like is your BFF Never underestimate the power of sunscreen. Those harmful UV rays are a major contributor to premature aging. So, slather on that sunscreen every morning, even on cloudy days. Your future self will thank you!Not a huge fan of sunscreen? We get it. Soo many sunscreens feel greasy, don’t smell great or simply don’t sit well on our skin, and then there are those thick white sunscreens that look like a paste when applied too! That’s why we love the ELES Luminous Defence Brightening Day Protection SPF 50. It’s not greasy but instead silky soft, the scent isn’t unpleasant, and it applies beautifully to my skin. And thanks to its formulation its helps nourish and restore skins luminosity too, not to mention it’s high SPF of 50! Invest in an eye cream rich in hyaluronic acid and use it day and night Investing in a good quality eye cream that's packed with hydrating and skin-loving ingredients including hyaluronic acid and peptides will do wonders for ageing eyes. Gently pat the product around your eyes morning and night for that extra boost of moisture and optimal results. For more on the benefits of using hyaluronic acid under your eyes and our 3 favourite eye treatments click here. Add a gemstone facial roller to your daily beauty routine The roller will, not only help reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles around the eyes, when used correctly, it can dramatically reduce puffiness by moving excess fluid around your eyes towards your lymph nodes where it filters out the toxins too. Cool right? To find out more about the facial rollers and how to use them click here. Introduce tea time for your eyes Tea isn’t just for drinking you know, it’s also good for soothing your eyes too! Try placing cold tea bags (caffeine free, herbal tea is best!) on your closed eyes for a few minutes. The tannins in tea can help tighten the skin and reduce puffiness too! Consider practicing eye massage Light massage with your ring finger can improve bloody circulation and actually help your skin appear smoother. Remember gentle, gentle though as applying too much pressure to already thin, delicate skin can have the adverse effect! Give your eyes a rest from screen time Increased time in front of your laptop and on your phone can reap havoc with your precious peepers. In fact, spending just two consecutive hours on a digital device can cause eyestrain or fatigue while overexposure to blue light also suppresses the release of melatonin, the hormone that regulates sleep, therefore disrupting our normal sleep pattern. And we all know poor sleep can lead to premature ageing, especially around the delicate eye area! Make healthy lifestyle choices Your overall health reflects on your skin, including the delicate eye area. Eat a balanced diet rich in antioxidants, vitamins, and omega-3 fatty acids. And if you're a smoker, consider kicking the habit – smoking accelerates skin aging like nobody's business. Using gentle cleansing is a must Be kind to your skin when you cleanse but also never skip on cleansing, it’s a must, just be sure to use a gentle, hydrating cleanser that doesn't strip away your skin's natural oils. Harsh cleansers can contribute to dryness and crepiness. Try Medicalia’s Gentle Cleanser. Introduce cold compress magic Incorporate cold compresses into your routine. Applying a cold, damp cloth or chilled spoons over your eyes for a few minutes can help reduce puffiness and refresh your skin. Keep skin hydrated Invest in a good hydrating mist. A quick spritz throughout the day can give your skin the moisture it craves, helping to minimize crepiness. We love Pevonia’s Hyaluronic Acid Hydra Mist. It’s one of my all time favourites. Make sure you get enough Zzzz’s Beauty sleep is real people! After all it’s not dubbed beauty sleep for nothing! Make sure you're getting enough restful sleep each night. Elevate your head slightly with an extra pillow to prevent fluid from pooling around your eyes, which can lead to puffiness and crepiness. Upgrade your pillow case If you are one for sleeping with your face in the pillow, you might want to consider switching up your cotton pillowcase to a silk or satin alternative instead.Silk has natural moisturising properties to retain moisture around the eyes. The dense weave of the silky-smooth fibres also keep moisture close to your skin, this extra moisture can help to reduce dark circles, fine lines and wrinkles.Just remember, Rome wasn’t built in day, and your under-eye skin won’t transform overnight either sadly (if only!) Be patient and be religious with these steps and you’ll be waking up to smoother, brighter and younger looking eyes soon!
Beauty Collective - healthy glowing skin

These are the dos and don’ts for achieving healthy, glowing skin

by Jo Boyden on Mar 23 2023
We all strive for flawless perfect skin, that beautifully youthful and healthy complexion free of blemishes, dark spots and other signs of ageing, but achieving truly healthy skin requires us to pay consistent care and attention to our skin’s needs, and we aren’t just about our morning skincare routine. There are in fact a multitude of steps we should be taking to help our skin daily. Here are the dos and don’ts to keeping skin looking and feeling great day in and day out. DO cleanse skin every day Cleansing skin is a MUST. In fact, cleansing is the most important step in your skincare routine. Cleansing helps to remove excess oil, dirt and dead skin sitting on your skin’s surface which can contribute to the development of skin problems like spots if left! Daily cleansing also helps to balance your skin’s pH levels which can prevent dryness and irritation. Cleansing will also help enhance product absorption! This means those products such as your moisturiser and serum will be able to penetrate your skin much more effectively and provide maximum benefits! To learn more about the importance of cleansing and how a great cleanser will improve your skin tenfold click here. DO hydrate your skin morning and night Everything we do always takes hydration out of our skin. Wearing makeup, applying cleansers, sweating, drinking alcohol, and the sun! all take moisture out of our skin so it’s super important to not only drink water but to use hydrating products daily too! Make sure you invest in quality hydrating moisturisers, serums and cleansers that will replenish skin with moisture and not dry it out more! And for extra efficiency and penetration of active ingredients remember to moisturise while your skin is still damp after your shower. DO apply sunscreen every. single. day. All year round. It’s easy to think why bother with sunscreen on days when it's a little overcast or raining even, but as I’ve preached many a time before, sunscreen isn’t just a summertime skincare product when it’s hot and the sky is blue, the sun is always there and has the ability to penetrate through those clouds no matter how thick they are! It’s important to remember that wearing sunscreen is THE best protection against skin ageing. Oh, and if you are staying indoors, and happen to work next to a window like me, the sun has the ability to penetrate through the glass to your skin too!And then there is the issue of blue light damage. To read all about it click here. But in short, just like the sun, your devices omit harmful ‘blue light’ rays, so it’s important to wear sunscreen to protect skin against them too! DO exercise regularly Exercising regularly is not only important for your body and overall health and wellbeing, it can also improve the health of your skin. Exercise improves blood circulation and oxygenation to the skin, which in turn helps nourish skin cells and keep them vital. In addition to providing oxygen, blood flow also helps carry away waste products, including free radicals, from working skin cells. So in short regular exercise will keep your skin more supple and youthful in appearance it also imparts a healthy glow! DO eat a healthy, balanced diet with plenty of fruits, vegetables and whole grains Fruits and veggies contain powerful antioxidants which help protect our skin from free radical damage (triggered by smoke, pollution etc). When free radicals overpower our skin they trigger oxidative stress which can impact our skin presenting in the form of fine lines, wrinkles, dull, uneven skin tone, dark spots and skin sagging – eek! So make sure you eat that rainbow of fruits and veggies each day and keep premature skin ageing away! DO try to get 8 hours of sleep a night We don’t call it ‘beauty sleep’ for nothing! When we sleep our skin repairs itself, producing collagen and the more collagen produced means skin is plumper and less likely to wrinkle! If we’re sleep-deprived, not only will we wake with dark under-eye circles and bags, but we are also more likely to experience skin irritation, dehydration, fine lines, and dare I say blemishes! Us adults need a minimum of 7 hours of restful slumber a night, 8 preferred! Just be sure you switch off any electronics an hour or so before a practice some relaxation techniques! DO drink at least 6-8 glasses of water a day Water is essential for healthy skin. It flushes out toxins and helps maintain your skin’s elasticity (which keeps it looking younger!) Those who drink more water are less likely to suffer from premature ageing as those who drink little amounts of water daily!Drinking ample amounts of water also helps balance your skin’s oil and water content which in turn helps to prevent excess oil and sebum secretion (meaning fewer clogged pores and less chances of getting spots!)It’s important to remember though that our skin is the last of our organs to receive water and nutrients so plenty of it daily is a must! DO exfoliate your skin at least once a week even if it’s on the sensitive side Weekly exfoliation is a must to remove dead skin cells and promote cell turnover. If the dead skin cells aren’t removed they can get trapped leading to clogged pores and unwanted spots. You might be afraid to exfoliate if your skin is on the sensitive side but that’s ok there are amazing sensitive skin exfoliators out there for you! You just need to steer clear of physical exfoliants and opt for gentle enzyme exfoliators that don’t contain granules. These earth-sourced ingredients essentially dissolve dead skin cells as opposed to physically scrubbing them off.For more on what to do when it comes to exfoliating sensitive skin click here. But DON’T over exfoliate your skin Over-exfoliating skin can strip it of natural oils and lead to dryness and irritation. To learn more about the impact of over-exfoliated skin click here. DON’T overload your skin with products From cleansers to exfoliators, serums, moisturisers, masks, oils and more, it is easy to get carried away with skincare and believe that buying and applying all the products will be best for your skin! The problem is overloading it, particularly when you are using too many actives in your products can actually be detrimental and result in dryness, irritation and redness! Instead, listen to your skin! The best approach is to understand your own individual needs rather than just adding layers of products because you are under the misconception that using them all will deliver optimum skin results!Remember if you are prone to sensitive skin simplicity is key, if you have an oily complexion cleansing, toning and a light mattifying moisturiser can be enough, and if your skin tends to be on the dry side, then a serum, moisturiser, mist and face oil to lock moisture in will be beneficial. Also, if you are adding in new steps to your skincare routine, do so one product at a time so that your skin has time to adjust. DON’T overdo your makeup Who doesn’t love wearing a bit of makeup, it can totally transform the way we look and feel after all, but overdoing it is a no no. Not because it might look OTT but because of the effect it can have on your skin. Depending on your skin type, excessive makeup can clog your pores leading to breakouts. Plus the chemicals in some makeup products can dry out your skin leaving it looking dull, dehydrated and depleted. A solution is to use healthy makeup formulations packed with skin loving ingredients like mineral makeup. DON’T use hot water when washing your face or taking a shower Hot water can strip your skin of its natural oils and in turn cause excessive dryness. Instead, use lukewarm water. DON’T leave your makeup on when going to bed I’m sure we’ve ALL been guilty of going to bed with our makeup on once or even many a time! Especially when we are exhausted after the daily juggle, or perhaps have had one too many and ooh how that bed looks so inviting but removing the day's makeup and grime off your face is a must! In fact not cleansing before bed means your skin is unable to regenerate effectively while you sleep, so pores clog, blemishes become more apparent, and fatigue (ageing!) signs start to appear. DON’T drink too much alcohol Many of us might love a margarita with friends or that big glass of red of an evening but sadly excessive alcohol consumption can dehydrate your skin and contribute to wrinkles and other skin issues, so try and limit your weekly alcohol consumption. DON’T smoke Smoking can accelerate the ageing process! It can damage collagen and elastin in your skin which leads to the formation of wrinkles and other signs of ageing. DON’T stress too much Stress can lead to skin problems like acne and eczema so managing stress levels through relaxation techniques like meditation, yoga and deep breathing can be essential for skin health.

skincare mistakes

10 skincare mistakes you could be making and how to fix them

by Jo Boyden on Aug 19 2022
You’re a stickler when it comes to your skincare routine, you eat an antioxidant rich diet, drink plenty of water and make sure you exercise daily, yet still your skin is dull and lifeless, or perhaps you’re finding yourself constantly prone to pesky pimples, or dryness even? If this is you, chances are you could be doing a few things wrong when it comes to your skincare and believe me, you’d not be the first! Keep reading as we count down 10 common skincare mistakes you may well be making and how to fix them! You are overloading your skin From cleansers to exfoliators, serums, moisturisers, masks, oils and more, it is easy to get carried away with skincare and believe that buying and applying all the products will be best for your skin! The problem is overloading it, particularly when you are using too many actives in your products can actually be detrimental and result in dryness, irritation and redness! The fix: Listen to your skin! The best approach is to understand your own individual needs rather than just adding layers of products because you are under the misconception that using them all will deliver optimum skin results! Remember if you are prone to sensitive skin simplicity is key, if you have an oily complexion cleansing, toning and a light mattifying moisturiser can be enough, and if your skin tends to be on the dry side, then a serum, moisturiser, mist and face oil to lock moisture in will be beneficial. Also, if you are adding in new steps to your skincare routine, do so one product at a time so that your skin has time to adjust. You are using toxic ingredients You think you’ve invested in a moisturiser that will deliver beautifully bright and blemish free results but it’s actually packed with toxins that can irritate skin, leading to reactions and more! Sadly, the products you put on your skin aren’t always safe. So many skincare products are formulated with toxic ingredients including Parabens, Phthalates, Triclosan, chemical sunscreen filter and synthetic fragrance. The fix: Choose natural skincare products, they’ll contain zero toxic nasties and always be aware of what you are buying, don’t just fall for the marketing hype! You aren’t updating your skincare as your skin changes with age You might have been loyal to the same moisturiser for many years but sadly the skincare you’ve used in your 20’s really won’t cut it in your 30’s, 40’s and beyond. This is because as we age our skin’s needs dramatically change. Skin becomes thinner, drier, more sensitive, and loses elasticity as collagen and elastin start to deplete, while fine lines and wrinkles start to form. The fix: As you start to age look for anti-ageing skincare rich in ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, collagen, and vitamin C. For more info on this read about the top 5 skincare ingredients as recommended by the experts and adjust your products accordingly. You are skipping your moisturiser because your skin is oily or prone to blemishes It’s that time of the month and a few pesky pimples have reared their ugly head, or you are often prone to adult acne or simply suffer from oily skin, so think it best to lay off the moisturiser which must be exacerbating the issue right? Wrong. The fix: While you are likely not alone in thinking lathering up on moisturiser seems counterproductive, everyone, no matter what your skin type or concern, needs to apply a moisturiser daily! When searching for the right moisturiser for your skin type they do tend to be categorised by skin concern so you just need to research and find the right one for your skin’s needs. Just be sure to opt for lighter moisturisers by day, especially in the warmer months, and richer creams at night. For oily skin types, we highly recommend Phytomer’s Oligopur Hydra Matifying Control Cream. It’s an ultra-light cream that controls oil and breakthrough shine throughout the day. No shine, no greasy feeling, no heaving feeling! If your skin is prone to pimples try Phytomer Acnipure Blemish Solution Fluid, it’s a lightweight gel-cream that fights acne without clogging pores or irritating skin. It also helps eliminate shine, diminishes the appearance of blemishes, and prevents future breakouts!! You are over exfoliating or not exfoliating enough As we age our skin’s natural ability to shed dead cells declines, our pores can get clogged and skin can become uneven, dull, lacklustre and spotty even! This is why exfoliation is so imperative, and not a step that should be ignored even if you are prone to acne or suffer from sensitive skin!I’m not talking daily exfoliation though! Just once or twice a week depending on your skin type will suffice, as too much exfoliation can be counterproductive! This is because exfoliators, especially physical ones with granules or beads can damage the outer most layer of your skin when overused. One sign of over exfoliating is skin hypersensitivity. This can cause irritation, breakouts, and even a stinging feeling when you apply products! Eek.The fix: Understand your skin and choose your exfoliator accordingly. We highly recommend Pevonia’s Clarigel Exfoliating Cleanser for blemish prone skin. It combines soapwort, Triclosan, Grapefruit Oil, Salicylic Acid and Citric Acid with Jojoba to gently remove impurities and delivers an intense exfoliating and deep cleansing experience! If your skin is a little on the sensitive side, just be sure to opt for a super gentle formula – I LOVE Pevonia’s Gentle Exfoliating Cleanser, it gently polishes your skin with its unique creamy, granular texture. But if granules scare you, I also highly recommend Phytomer’s Vegetal Exfoliant with Natural Enzymes. It’s a soft exfoliant for even the most sensitive or rosacea prone skin and uses natural enzymes to encourage cell turnover without scrubbing or irritating your skin. You are not wearing sunscreen daily, all year round It’s easy to think why bother with sunscreen if we are in the middle of winter but as I’ve preached many a time before, sunscreen isn’t just a summertime skincare product, it’s necessary to religiously wear it All. Year. Round. Why? Because it is THE best protection against skin ageing. Oh, and if you are staying indoors, and happen to work next to a window like me, the sun has the ability to penetrate the glass and your skin too!And then there is the issue of blue light damage. To read all about it click here. But in short, just like the sun, your devices omit harmful ‘blue light’ rays, so it’s important to wear sunscreen to protect skin against them too!The fix: Sunscreens formulated with iron oxides provide enhanced protection against blue light, especially when combined with zinc oxide. A new favourite of mine is Medicalia’s Sunscreen SPF 30 with Blue Light Shield. If you’re a little reluctant to wear your sunscreen because quite frankly its smell and greasy texture puts you off, you are going to love this lightweight emulsion! This everyday sunscreen contains an exclusive mineral formula to shield skin from harmful sun rays, blue light and pollution. It delivers all-natural protection with the addition of zinc oxide which acts to form a protective seal over the skin to reflect blue light away. It also rubs into skin seamlessly without leaving a white cast or greasy residue behind. And even better, the formula is reef-safe and works for all skin types and tones! You are taking daily hot showers and baths Who doesn’t love soaking in a boiling bubble bath or indulging in a long hot shower every evening? But do you know how detrimental this actually is for your skin? Hot showers and baths can actually inflame the skin, causing redness, itching, and even peeling. They also can disrupt the skin's natural balance of moisture, robbing you of the natural oils that keep skin healthy. Eek.The Fix: To keep skin happy, healthy and supple, reduce time spent in the shower or bath, keep water to a warm temperature and always apply moisturiser immediately after while skin is still damp. By doing so will prevent damage, dryness, irritation, and itchiness. You are not using your retinol cream correctly We all know retinol is THE no. one ingredient when it comes to combatting skin ageing. The hero ingredient multi tasks like no other. Known for its ability to empower and enhance skin cellular performance it dramatically improves fine lines and wrinkles while repairing sun-damaged and mature skin. It’s also a free radical fighter! Who wouldn’t want to introduce this multitasking miracle ingredient into their daily life! But you need to know how to use it! Using it incorrectly can unfortunately have ramifications. The fix: Because retinol is unstable when exposed to heat and light avoid using it in your morning skincare routine, instead apply before bed. I'll ntroduce it slowly. Apply it only at night, one or two times a week for the first week and gradually increase application. Also it’s best not to layer your retinol cream with other potent ingredients such as your acids. And finally, give the product time to work its magic. This could take a few months, but the results are worth it. We promise! To learn more about this anti-ageing wonder ingredient click here. You are mixing skincare ingredients that are no compatible I’m certain many of us will have mixed our skincare products without knowing that some ingredients do not complement each other, in fact some combinations can actually counteract each other! These ingredients such as vitamin C, retinol, benzoyl peroxide, AHA’s and BHA’s are simply better suited on their own and can be detrimental to skin when mixed or layered leading to irritation, redness or just general lack of desired results! (Unless of course they’ve been carefully placed in the same product by the clever scientists!)The fix: Let your retinol, vitamin c, benzoyl peroxide, AHA’s and BHA’s be the star of their own show. This doesn’t mean you can’t use your retinol cream and your vitamin c serum! Just use the serum in the morning and your retinol cream at night! Also focus on the combinations that can be mixed! These include; Hyaluronic acid and most ingredients! SPF and vitamin c, AHA’s and BHA’s, vitamin c and vitamin e, retinol and SPF. You are not cleansing your face before bed I’m sure we’ve ALL been guilty of this once or many a time! Especially when we are exhausted after the daily juggle, or perhaps have had one too many and ooh how that bed looks so inviting but removing the days makeup and grime off your face is a must! In fact not cleansing before bed means your skin is unable to regenerate effectively while you sleep, pores clog, and fatigue (ageing!) signs start to appear. The fix: For a fantastic makeup remover which effectively melts away makeup and grime with minimum effort try Phytomer’s Doux Contour Eye and Lip Waterproof Makeup Remover. Combining the effectiveness of an oil (a trio of oils in fact) and the gentleness of a lotion, this ultra-hydrating makeup remover, eradicates even the most stubborn of lips and eye makeup fast! And my absolute favourite cleanser at the moment is Pevonia’s new CleanRefresh Foaming Oil Cleanser. Its oil formulation transforms into a luscious foamy cleanser on application when mixed with water and it leaves skin feeling fantastically refreshed and beautifully clean without the drying effects that other cleansers can leave. Plus its subtle scent is just heavenly. To read more about sleeping in makeup and what it really does to our skin click here.

Want clear skin? 13 beauty tips you need to know

by Jo Boyden on Jun 30 2022
Whether you are currently dealing with adult acne, are prone to the occasional breakout, or get hormonal pimples when it’s ‘that time of month’, it is possible to get clear skin and maintain it, you just need to know how! From blemish busting products to best practices, we asked the BC pros how to get clear skin fast! Here’s their top 13 beauty tips…. Make sure you use skincare rich in blemish-fighting ingredients Just as you’d search for products rich in Hyaluronic Acid if we have dry or dehydrated skin, or collagen if you’re concerned about ageing, if you want to target any blemishes you may already have and urgently eliminate you need to make sure your skincare is formulated with a few key ingredients! These include;Salicylic AcidWhen it comes to breakouts, salicylic acid should always be your trusty go-to. This is because it’s calming, decongesting and antibacterial, as well as a proven superstar in reducing and preventing further pore clogging! Salicylic Acid is a BHA (beta-hydroxy acid) that penetrates deep into the skin to exfoliate sebum-filled pores, as well as dissolve oil build-up and dead cells from the skin’s surface!Benzoyl PeroxideBenzoyl Peroxide is the most effective ingredient for actually treating spots as opposed to preventing them. This is because it actually kills bacteria! It can however be a little drying and irritating which is why it’s best used in specific targeted spot treatments.AHA’s (Glycolic and Lactic Acids)These two alpha-hydroxy acids slough away the dead skin cells that cause pimple-producing clogged pores. The result? Smoother, softer skin.Vitamin COfficially known as ascorbic acid, Vitamin C is an antioxidant and has anti-inflammatory properties. It can help decrease redness and swelling in blemish-prone skin. Firstly though, when it comes to blemishes the first port of call is to understand what exactly you are dealing with, whether it be hormonal pimples around your chin to one big bulbus bump on your forehead to all out acne, blemishes come in all different shapes and sizes and the products you use can differ too! To find out more about the different types of blemishes and the best product for you click here. Use a facial cleansing brush daily The secret to getting clearer skin is not just in the formulas we use but the practices we establish too! Used in unison with your cleanser, a cleansing brush will provide skin with deeper cleaning, removing any remnants of dirt, bacteria and makeup from your skin you’re your cleanser alone may not have.A good facial cleansing brush will also exfoliate the skin’s surface, leaving it looking and feeling so much smoother. Just be sure that it is made with gentle silicon as some cleansing devices can be to harsh for blemish prone and reactive skin, causing any redness and sensitivity to be exacerbated. The best facial cleansing brush as recommended by the BC pros is the Sonic Facial Cleansing Brush. We all know about the importance of cleansing, but with this little genius gadget you can get your deepest clean yet as gentle but powerful sonic massage works with ultra-hygienic silicone touchpoints and your chosen cleanser to thoroughly remove any build-up of dead skin cells, dirt, oil and sweat, preventing skin problems and resulting in clean & radiant skin, But that’s not all! It preps your skin perfectly for the absorption of your favourite skincare products for maximum effect and results, the tiny pulses help awaken the skin by stimulating the circulation of blood in the skin’s layers (when the blood is stimulated more oxygen is produced in the blood and this feeds the skin cells) and the cleansing brush will aid in keeping your pores clear from debris banishing those breakouts! All it takes is 2 minutes per day! Watch what you eat Sadly, certain foods can exacerbate blemishes and cause full on acne breakouts eek! While other foods can actually help fight them! To pave the way to clear skin you want to follow an anti-acne diet stat. This is a diet rich in the following goodness; Fatty fish such as salmon and tuna Yellow and orange fruits and vegetables such as carrots, apricots, and sweet potatoes Spinach, kale and other dark green and leafy vegetables Tomatoes Blueberries Avocados whole-wheat bread brown rice quinoa Soybeans Foods to avoid include; Refined grains and sugars Dairy products Fast food Chocolate Whey protein powder Stay hydrated Staying hydrated is imperative when it comes to maintaining clear skin. It’s important to consume your 8 glasses of water a day, as well as religiously moisturising your skin both morning and night to keep it supple, soft, well-nourished and blemish free! Never skip on your sunscreen Sun, heat and humidity can cause oil glands to become overactive, which in turn can lead to acne breakouts! To prevent these breakouts choose and oil-free, non-comedogenic sunscreen and apply it liberally daily! Keep your phone clean and try not to touch your face! We are all guilty of spending many an hour stuck to our phones but did you know the bacteria on your phone can lead to breakouts! It’s best to use earbuds instead of pressing the phone against your face or simply use an anti-bacterial wipe to clean your phone daily! It’s also important to be mindful of how often you touch your face with your hands (eek guilty as charged!) like your phone your hands pick up dirt and bacteria and transfer this onto your skin when you rub your face can lead to further blemishes! Exercise every day, even if it’s only a little Exercise is imperative for optimum skin health, by exercising we increase blood flow, by increasing blood flow we help nourish skin cells and keep them vital. Exercise has also been accountable for reducing stress-related acne. Take time out to relax In a fast-paced world where many of us barely stop it’s easy to fall victim to stress! The thing is stress can, unfortunately, trigger breakouts and if you already suffer from acne, stress will only make it worse! So it’s important to try and take time out of our busy schedule for some relaxation. Anything from practicing breathing techniques, reading a good book, taking a bubble bath, meditating, listening to music, or practicing yoga can and will help! Wear mineral makeup as opposed to traditional formulations If you want clear skin and you’re not willing to let makeup go, choose mineral makeup products. They don’t contain any chemical nasties or pore clogging ingredients like some traditional formulations and will allow skin to breath freely all day long. Here at BC from the staff to the experts we all love ELES Cosmetics Liquid Powder Mineral Foundation. And for more translucent coverage the ELES Mineral Foundation Powder. Both products are perfect for those with skin sensitives, are free of any chemical nasties, provide effortless and natural coverage and most importantly will allow your skin to brief freely (so no pore clogging in sight) and feel like you aren’t wearing makeup at all! What more could you ask for? Clean your makeup tools! I’m sure many of us are guilty of putting this off but regularly cleaning our makeup brushes and sponges can make a huge difference to our skin! Yes, that’s right! Your makeup tools are meant to be washed! Besides bacteria, both brushes and sponges also accumulate dead skin cells and oil which can clog your pores leading to skin irritation and pesky pimples! Also, if you apply your makeup with a dirty bush the end result can be a streaky and patchy complexion! Clean brushes definitely make for a smoother makeup application! So get to cleaning them stat! Change your pillowcase frequently! While no one loves to do lots of laundry, switching up your pillowcase every few days will help on the quest for clear skin! Unfortunately like with our hands, makeup brushes and our phones, our pillowcases can harbour any excess oil, dirt and bacteria too (urgh) and in turn, become a breeding ground for acne. So, make sure you change that pillowcase to reduce the risk of breakouts! Better still, if you’re prone to blemishes opt for a silk pillowcase! Silk pillowcases absorb less moisture and dirt, therefore, making them the better choice. Always remove makeup before you go to sleep! It doesn’t matter how tired you are, removing your makeup every night is paramount! While you are asleep at night, your skin isn’t! It’s actually the time your skin recharge, repair, recuperate and renew itself! When you leave makeup on, you are preventing that from happening. The skin ceases to breathe properly, pores get clogged and blemishes start to appear! Get some quality sleep! We don’t call it ‘beauty sleep’ for nothing!
9 tips to improve hooded eyes naturally

9 tips to improve hooded eyes naturally

by Jo Boyden on Mar 30 2022
Dealing with hooded crepey eyelids? Is the skin above your eyes suddenly sagging and you need natural solutions to fix this because surgery just isn’t an option right now? We’ve got you! While sadly surgery is the only way to totally correct this condition, there are a number of steps you can take to improve your sagging eyelids naturally, so read on as we count them down.Firstly though, what exactly are hooded eyelids? And why are you the one dealing with them!?“Hooded crepy eyelids”, “droopy eyelids” “baggy eyelids” or dermatochalasis as it is technically referred to, are when the skin above the eye sags and hangs over the eye. The excess skin occurs between the brow and the upper lash line and in some situations can affect your eyesight. They are caused by a number of factors including genetics (thanks parents!), allergies, dehydrated and nutrient deprived skin and….age, this is because as we get older the collagen and elastin in our skin (which keeps it smooth, supple and youthful) starts to diminish, decreasing firmness and elasticity as well as weakening skin tissue, making it unable to support the weight of our eyelid skin.So what can you do to improve this, before heading down the surgery route? Lots! Look for eye creams and treatments that contain collagen and elastin We love Pevonia’s Lumafirm Eye Contour Lift & Glow! Rich in Marine Collagen, Marine Elastin and super hydrator – hyaluronic, this powerhouse product provides powerful anti-ageing benefits to the very delicate eye area – visibly soothing puffiness, reducing signs of fatigue and diminishing crepey eyelids. Use products rich in retinol Retinol you say? Yes, don’t be scared of this superhero ingredient. Indeed, you need to apply with caution, and start off introducing it to your daily skin ritual slowly, but retinol works on both the upper and lower eyelids to improve the skin barrier function and increase the collagen content of the skin! This increase in collagen tightens the skin and visibly reduces any fines lines and sagginess of the eyelids. Yess!Try Pevonia’s Micro Retinol Line. The 4 outstanding products in the line contain all-natural retinol, sourced from green leafy vegetables. To create each product, Pevonia have used a specialized technology to create micro-particles of retinol that get delivered deep into the epidermis. This means complete product absorption, no skin irritation and immediate results.Every product in the Micro Retinol Line contains a powerhouse trio of vitamin C, vitamin E, and Micro-Retinol® The addition of vitamins C and E not only ensures Micro-Retinol®’s stability, but also that the skin’s nutrients and density are renewed and preserved. Lay two chilled cucumber slices over your eye lids every day for 20 minutes Yes, this old wives tale actually works! Cucumbers contain ascorbic and caffeic acids, both of which reduce saggy eyelids. They decrease inflammation and naturally tighten skin too! Also, if you wear makeup, opt for a remover formulated with cucumber like Pevonia’s Eye Makeup Remover. It’s beautifully calming and decongesting, soothing and calming sensitive eyes while effectively removing makeup without pressure or friction. Boil two Chamomile tea bags, cool them and place them over eyelids every morning You might not have heard this one before, but Chamomile is a natural anti-inflammatory so it’s great for strengthening skin and reducing puffiness, swelling and skin irritation around the eyes. As with your cool cucumbers, you can apply two chamomile tea bags to your eye lids. Firstly though, you’ll need to actually make the tea! Place two tea bags into a cup with the boiling water. Next cool them in the fridge for 30 minutes until nice and chilled and then place over your eyes for 20-30 minutes. Do this every morning when you make your cup of tea of coffee and reap in the results! Eat grapes if you aren’t already doing so! A bowl a day will do! Grapes are not only delicious, but they also offer a multitude of benefits! One of them is helping counteract drooping eyelids! How? You may ask! Grapes are full of resveratrol, a natural element that slows cell ageing, so eating more grapes while it won’t necessarily improve your already hooded eyelids it will help slow down skin ageing, preventing excess fine lines and further skin slackening and sagging. Keep skin hydrated and drink plenty of water!! Yes, that old piece of advice! You know those 2 litres (8 cups) of water you are supposed to drink a day for optimum skin health? Yes! do it! Reel in on the smoking If you smoke and you are worried about your baggy eye lids, try to give it up! Tobacco smoke can affect the tissues around the eyes. It can cause puffiness and disorders of the eyelids, such as irritation and inflammation! Get enough shut eye That’s right lack of sleep as we know can affect our eyes. Who hasn’t woken up with saggy, puffy eyes of a morning when they haven’t had enough sleep? It’s time to make sleep a priority. I know easier said than done for some, but I also know myself that I need to practice what I preach, and if I wanted to, I could put down that book or turn off the tv or close my laptop an hour before I actually do each night! Make sure you slip, slop, slap every. single. day, all year around Just as you want to protect your face and body against sun damage you need to remember to protect your eyes too! You might have concerns about applying sunscreen to your delicate eye zone, but don’t! Most sunscreen is safe to use on and around your eyelid region (just don’t accidentally put it in your eyes of course!!)Also wear your sunglasses religiously! After all, you want to protect those sensitive peepers of yours as much as possible. Blue light omitted from our devices can also negatively impact your eye area. So put down those devices! To learn more about blue light damage and how it affects your eyes, click here.If the idea of going under the knife terrifies you, try these solutions first.

7 self-care rituals to help you and your skin indulge in blissful slumber

by Jo Boyden on Sep 15 2021
The month of September is recognized as Self Care Awareness Month and what better time to practice self-care than now, when so many of us are living through what feels like forever in lockdown! And yes, I hear and echo many of those mum’s (and dad’s!) who are likely thinking self-care? Who has time for that! But self-care can be as simple as getting an extra hour (or minutes even!) of invaluable zzzzz’s! In fact, sleep is probably the most important part of self-care! Why? Because it can improve your mindset, memory, concentration, energy, productivity, and skin too! And we know, no one is choosing to be sleep deprived, the stresses of everyday life can seriously prevent us from getting the amount of sleep we crave, but if it’s possible to try and get our heads down at a reasonable time (I’m talking to myself here too!) and stick to it nightly, it’ll improve your quality of sleep and in turn have a positive impact of your life and complexion too!Below are 7 self-care tips that will help induce sleep as well as seriously benefit your skin. And if they are working for me, I’m pretty sure they’ll work for you too! Get outdoors and get activeSpending time in the great outdoors in nature is paramount to our mental wellbeing, but it is also known to reduce stress, alleviate anxiety, lower blood pressure and induce peaceful sleep! If you aren’t already doing so, or are becoming a wee bit complacent in lockdown, as part of your daily self-care routine, try and force yourself to get that 20 minutes plus of exercise daily and release those feel-good endorphins it induces.Eat your way to sleepWe all know eating too close to bedtime can impact the quality of our sleep but so can the foods we eat! Now is the time to make changes to your daily diet and incorporate the following foods and drinks that are known to have sleep promoting properties!Nuts – such as almonds, are a great source of the hormone melatonin which regulates your internal clock and signals your body to prepare for sleep. They are also an excellent source of magnesium which has the ability to reduce inflammation and stress levels, in turn helping to improve sleep quality, especially in those who suffer from insomnia.Dairy – such as a glass of milk or plain yogurt are known sources of the amino acid tryptophan which increases the production of melatonin. A glass of milk before bed has been proven to improve sleep.Bananas – like milk contain tryptophan, and the fruit itself is a modest source of magnesium.Oatmeal & rice – are high in carbs and fibre and have been reported to induce drowsiness when consumed close to bedtime. Additionally, oats are a known source of melatoninChamomile tea – offers a variety of health benefits! From being rich in antioxidants that help reduce inflammation, to boosting your immunity, reducing anxiety and depression! In addition, this popular tea contains apigenin, an antioxidant that binds to certain receptors in your brain that help promote sleepiness.Indulge in a salt infused bubble bathIf you can’t remember the last time you let yourself enjoy a long soak in the bath free from distraction, then now’s the time to treat yourself to a salts-infused bath. Little instantly promotes relaxation quite like taking a remineralizing bath. Ahhhhhh. Begin by creating a spa-like atmosphere so your entire body is relaxed – I’m talking soothing music, burning essential oils, lighting your favourite candle, whatever it takes to set the mood. Next, fill your bath with Phytomer’s Oligomer Well Being Sensation Essential Minerals Relaxing Bath. This amazing lightly foaming product is enriched with Oligomer – a partially sodium-reduced seawater concentrate that contains all of the remineralizing properties of seawater –to strengthen and restore the skin and release all pent-up tension, helping you drift off into a world of utter relaxation.Create a night-time skincare ritualIt only takes minutes to apply your skincare products before bed but what a difference it will make to your skin! If you want to drift off to peaceful slumber and awake to gorgeous glowy skin these are my personal night-time go-to’s; Phytomer Night Recharge Youth Enhancing Cream - Skin cells do their greatest renewal and repair whist we sleep, so applying much needed hydration at night is encouraged to maximise absorption and to enhance your skin barrier. I personally LOVE Phytomer’s Night Recharge Youth Enhancing Cream and use it religiously because my skin demands that extra layer of rich fluffy moisturiser. The cream literally cocoons my skin in nourishing hydration and really does restore youthful vitality by morning.Pevonia Aromatic Oil – with all the benefits of 4 mood enhancing essential oils – lavender, grapefruit, chamomile and rose, combined with squalane and vitamin e, this soothing and indulgent face oil combats dehydration and dryness while soothing, calming and brightening skin. It also promotes an immediate feeling of increased wellbeing and total relaxation from the moment you apply it! Heaven.Say goodbye to dark undereye circles and bagsIt's not an urban legend — falling short on your zzz's, whether due to insomnia or late nights, can cause circles under your eyes to appear or become more prominent. This happens because lack of sleep tends to cause the blood vessels under the thin skin of the eyes to dilate, creating a dark tint. Not getting enough sleep can also increase stress which too can exacerbate dark circles.Fed up of waking with bulbous bags and black circles under your eyes? Try to get more of the necessary shut-eye, but also apply an eye cream like this beauty before bed and when you wake in the morning;Vie Collection’s Chrono Eyes Puffiness-Dark Circles Wrinkles Cream. Yes, a mouthful to say, but a product that does exactly what it says. It’s a beautifully fine cream enriched with moisturising ingredients to nourish the eye area while reversing puffiness, dark circles, and wrinkles! Seriously! it gives immediate gratification thanks to a pearlescent finish that instantly brightens the eye area and it has definitely calmed my puffiness, lightened my dark circles, and even smoothed my wrinkles! Meditate to clear your mindMeditation is one of the best ways to take care of yourself. I couldn’t imagine not having my nightly 5-minute meditation ritual, which my little one’s love to do before their bedtime too! It’s my way to wind down and calm my mind before bed and has vastly improved my quality of sleep too (because prior to committing to my bedtime meditation I was guilty of sitting staring at a screen until at least 11.30 pm at night and we all know how this can interfere with our circadian rhythm (our natural, internal process that regulates our sleep-wake cycle.)Meditation has a whole heap of benefits from reducing stress and negative emotions to increasing self-awareness, creativity, and patience. So, if you haven’t already and are keen to give it a try, I recommend both the Headspace and Calm apps. They have a range of guided meditations for an array of concerns such as sleep deprivation, anxiety, stress and productivity. It might take you a few goes before you start to relax into it and feel a change but believe me when I stay stick with it as you’ll soon wonder why you didn’t give it a go before now! Play soothing soundsThis one gets me every time! Not only when I go to bed but when I’m putting my kids to bed and pass out too!! In addition to facilitating quickly falling asleep and improving sleep quality, playing relaxing music before bed can improve sleep efficiency, which means more time that you are in bed is actually spent sleeping. Improved sleep efficiency equals more consistent rest and less waking up during the night. Result! Our family favourite is Relaxing Deep Sleep Music on Mindful Kids! Bliss. Beauty Collective - Celebrity anti-aging beautty tips

Anti-ageing beauty tips 8 celebrities swear by

by Jo Boyden on Jul 02 2021
It's not just genetics that grant our favourite celebrity’s beautifully bright, Benjamin Button-esque skin. Many A-listers have their go-to beauty regime which they believe keeps their complexions radiantly youthful. From daily exfoliation to drinking plentiful amounts of water, never for-going the SPF, to anti-ageing must haves, read on to discover the anti-ageing beauty tips 9 celebrities swear by and whether they’d really work for us all. Actress Gwyneth Paltrow“I drink a lot of water, it is full of healing powers”While drinking water daily is without a doubt imperative for your overall health and well-being, there is little research to support the idea that it will make a huge difference in your skin’s appearance. This is because when you drink water it doesn’t automatically go to the skin, in fact, it hydrates cells once it’s absorbed into the bloodstream and is filtered by the kidneys. So rather than relying heavily on water to boost your complexion, like Gwyneth, the best way to effectively hydrate skin is topically using products rich in hyaluronic acid. When it comes to getting dewy, hydrated skin, few ingredients deliver the way hyaluronic acid does. This is because it holds up to 1,000 times its weight in water meaning it attracts and holds on to moisture in skin cells, enabling skin to both feel and look hydrated and plump. Genius! We LOVE Pevonia’s Hyaluronic Acid Hydra Serum. Featuring one of the highest concentrations of hyaluronic acid on the market (12%), combined with the powerful anti-ageing duo of marine collagen and Escutox® (Hibiscus Esculentus extract which relaxes harsh wrinkles similar to that of Botox), it immediately boosts skin’s suppleness and combats ageing in multiple ways thanks to its skin-plumping properties. Actress Jennifer Aniston“I stay out of the sun”While it’s next to impossible to completely stay out of the sun (in fact 10 mins of sun a day will help with vitamin D production which is essential for health), limiting your time spent in it and definitely not bathing in it!! Will do wonders for your skin including keeping its smooth, even-toned texture. This is because the number one cause of wrinkles IS sun damage. Sunscreen is the most effective anti-ageing product going. Fact. So wearing an SPF daily come rain, hail or shine, whether inside or out is imperative for protection. For sunscreen that won’t clog your pores, look for formulas that contain zinc oxide. We highly recommend Medicalia’s NEW Sunscreen SPF30 with Blue Light Shield. This smooth tinted sunscreen formulated with zinc and iron oxides will not only protect your skin from UVA and UVB but also from the harmful effects of blue light caused by not only the sun but screen time too! What’s more, it rubs into skin seamlessly without leaving a white cast or greasy residue behind (which let's face it we all loathe ‘those’ sunscreens!) and its formula is reef safe!!And for extra protection and flawless-looking skin try ELES Age-Defying BB Cream 20 Actress Kerry Washington“I wear minimal makeup so my skin can breathe”Sure, sure, you might be one of those blessed celebrities that look just as fabulous without makeup on as they do with, but I’m pretty sure the majority of us aren’t going to forgo our favourite makeup must-haves in the hope it will preserve our age by a few years! What we can do though is invest in makeup that will allow your skin to breathe freely, so no clogged pores, reactions and premature ageing! ELES Cosmetics range of mineral foundations allows just that - your skin to “breathe” while shielding it against age aggressors. We can’t get enough of their best-selling Liquid Powder Mineral Foundation SPF15! It’s a silky, mineral-enriched liquid foundation which sets to a soft, powder finish when applied. Its skin-safe formula rich in vitamins A, C & E, contains no chemical ‘nasties’, heavy fillers or potential pore-clogging irritants, such as fragrance, talc, oil and dyes. And it is also formulated with titanium dioxide which is UV-protecting! Victoria Secrets Angel Candice Swanepoel“I’m religious about going for facials”Of course, a monthly, even weekly facial, as many celebrities will admit to having, can do wonders for your skin, and wouldn’t we all love to be in the position to indulge ourselves in weekly treatments at our therapists’ hands! But sadly, we can’t all afford to frequent our local spa! Good skin maintenance is however something we can all manage daily! Being armed with the right skincare products for your skin type is a start and why not give yourself a facial at home? Socialite and Entrepreneur Kim Kardashian-West"I wash with a hot cloth... then use it to exfoliate"While hot water washcloth exfoliation may be a thing, it is unlikely to be extremely beneficial in the long run. In fact, while washing your face with a hot cloth and hot water can be seen by some as a little luxury, it does come at a cost! Firstly, you want to be gentle when washing your skin. Using a washcloth can cause friction if used vigorously or too often which can lead to inflammation, irritation, and damage to your skin barrier, in turn leading to premature skin ageing!! Eek.Secondly, hot water can strip the skin of its essential moisture and deplete its natural protective barrier which can lead to impairments in the skin’s moisture. I’m sure the majority of us aren’t going to stop washing with hot water but it’s a good idea to turn the heat down a little and ensure you replenish skin immediately after with a good hydrating moisturiser! I’m currently loving Pevonia’s Age Correction Marine Collagen Cream it’s deliciously rich and delivers intense and lasting hydration to my skin! And finally exfoliating your face with a washcloth doesn’t come close to using a skincare exfoliator which will effectively remove the days impurities. Try sticking to a face scrub or enzyme exfoliator specific for your skin type. Actress Cate Blanchette“I remove stress where possible, this will give you a better glow”Research has found that stress can have a major impact on our bodies and our skin too, leading to inflammation, skin sensitivities and even early skin aging! As stress can aggravate skin conditions, taking time to indulge in a little self-care, in turn, helps your skin stay clear and smooth. Practice self-care at home with team BC’s beauty recommendations and experience better skin health. Supermodel Christie Brinkley“I start every day by exfoliating my face”Exfoliation is key as it helps increase cell turnover and unclog pores, preventing breakouts and helping other products in your skincare routine absorb more easily for optimal results. But while Christie advocates for daily exfoliation, it’s definitely not a recommendation for everyone! Here at BC we recommend you exfoliate once or twice a week – as long as your skin can handle it. For those with sensitive skin or certain skin conditions, it’s essential to start slowly (minimum of once a week) and steer clear of physical exfoliators which contain eg. grains or microbeads to buff away dead skin cells as these can be too harsh and lead to further reactions. Instead, opt for an enzyme exfoliator such as Phytomer’s Vegetal Exfoliant with Natural Enzymes. It’s a soft, gentle exfoliant for even the most sensitive skin, and effectively eliminates impurities and dead skin cells using natural enzymes to encourage cell turnover without any scrubbing!Supermodel Jessica Hart“I change up my products depending on how my skin reacts to the changing seasons.”Unfortunately, skincare isn’t a one size fits all. And over time our skin can change dramatically depending on our circumstances, from our lifestyle to the environment, our daily diet, to the stress we might be under! Also, with a change in season comes a change in our skin too so what worked for your skin weeks ago might now need some tweaking! You just need to recognise what your skin now needs and adapt your skincare to these needs. And then there are those of us that are self-isolating because of #lockdown. Here’s why it’s time to change up your skincare routine!
Beauty Collective - Wellness Rituals

The wellness rituals you should be doing daily

by Jo Boyden on Dec 22 2020
A stressful, hectic life is routine in my household this time of year, as I’m sure it is for many! Throw a pandemic into the mix and a growing number of covid cases in some states and the anxiety levels will be arising. So with the holiday season nearly upon us and the potential of another lockdown looming for some, post-Christmas will definitely be time to decompress and get a little self-loving back into our lives. From the importance of establishing a good skincare routine to the impact exercise can have on our mental health, these self-care rituals should be something we all adopt daily; Give yourself a facial My morning and night-time skincare routine is something I have (for as long as I can remember anyway!) always taken pleasure in, even when I’m time poor, which let's face it with young kids and now a puppy thrown in for good measure is….always! It should be a daily routine we all enjoy with all the benefits skincare brings, and incorporating a little facial ritual (which is easy to do) will really help nurture both your skin and psych. For a detailed account on how to perfect a salon-style wellbeing facial at home click here. Meditate for better quality of sleep I love company, would tout myself as a social butterfly and am seldom alone, but I do ensure for my mental wellbeing that I have at least 5 minutes a day to myself because the rest of the time it’s go, go, go! I love a bubble bath (we’ll get to that later!) but I couldn’t imagine not having my nightly 5-minute meditation ritual, which my little ones are now doing before their bedtime too! So if you haven’t already and are keen to give it a try, I recommend both the Headspace and Calm apps. They have a range of guided meditations for an array of concerns such as sleep deprivation, anxiety, stress and productivity. It might take you a few goes before you start to relax into it and feel a change, but believe me when I stay stick with it as you’ll soon wonder why you didn’t give it a go before now! Practice calming techniques Aside from meditation, practicing other calming techniques can be highly beneficial to both your psych and skin too! This is because stress, while bad of course for your health, is not good for your skin either! Unfortunately, cortisol (the stress hormone) has the ability to break down collagen in the skin resulting in premature ageing (great!) But practicing, for example yoga, or even putting on some soothing sounds can have a significant impact on reducing that cortisol flow! Phew. Indulge in a therapeutic bath So when I said I ensure I give myself 5 minutes of alone time a day for my night-time meditation ritual, I also try and give myself 15 minutes once or twice a week (daily is amazing if you have the time!) to indulge in a therapeutic bath. Little instantly reduces stress quite like sinking into a relaxing, remineralizing bath. Add the soothing sounds of spa music, a candle here and there, and a destressing bath foam or detoxifying salts and you’ve got yourself an at-home spa experience. I am loving Phytomer’s Oligomer Well Being Sensation Essential Minerals Relaxing Bath. It’s a lightly foaming, ultra-relaxing fragranced bath enriched with Oligomer – a partially sodium reduced seawater concentrate that contains all of the remineralizing properties of seawater – to strengthen and restore the skin while releasing all pent-up tension in the body. Amazing stuff right? Stay active Just 30 minutes of exercise a day can make a huge difference to not only our mental well-being, but our body and skin too! And no you don’t need to take up F45 or swim the ocean blue, just a moderate walk can be all you need. Daily exercise has been proven to help control weight, reduce risk of heart diseases, help our body manage blood sugar and insulin levels, decrease pain, and even delay the ageing of our cells! Exercise can also help increase oxygen and blood flow to the skin neutralizing the free radicals that damage it! And we all know exercising releases endorphins, the happy hormones! And who doesn’t want to feel pleasure, happiness and love on the daily! Have a little, or a whole lot less screen time This one’s not so much a ritual, more a necessity if we’re talking self-care and want to truly unwind this impending holiday season.Sadly, screen time (thanks to the blue light it emits) has an adverse effect on our skin, body and mind, and what with the multiple devices available at our fingertips, I’d say there was barely one of us who wasn’t guilty of spending too much time glued to one of them at some point in the day. Spending just two consecutive hours on a digital device can cause eyestrain or fatigue, while overexposure to this blue light also suppresses the release of melatonin, the hormone that regulates sleep, therefore disrupting our normal sleep pattern. And we all know poor sleep can lead to premature ageing. Eek.Use this opportunity to read a good book and perhaps discover a passion perhaps you didn’t know you had! Give yourself a mini massage! And finally..try and incorporate a mini massage into your daily life. Yes, yes I might be asking a bit much you say but I’m talking anything from a relaxing hand or foot massage which we can do ourselves in next to no time, to a back or shoulder massage if you have a willing family member or even a handheld massage machine! A massage no matter how big or small can elevate aches and pains, reduce tension, and evoke relaxation and calm. For an indulgent hand massage which we can easily do ourselves (and lets face it with all the hand sanitizer drying out our skin at the moment, applying hand cream has become a bit of a necessity) my hand cream of choice is Phytomer’s Oleocreme Ultra-Nourishing Hand Cream, the name says it all. I love to follow this with a spritz of my Pevonia Dry Oil Body Moisturiser. It’s one of Pevonia’s global best-sellers and for good reason! It literally revitalizes and nourishes every inch of skin with a combination of lavender, chamomile, and squalene. When my feet are feeling fatigued Pevonia’s Tension Relief Gel is my go-to and if my legs are sore and achy massaging Phytomer’s Cryotonic Soothing Leg Gel is a must! So go on, give these a go and reap the rewards.
13 skincare mistakes habits that are ageing you

13 skincare habits that are ageing you

by Jo Boyden on Sep 16 2020
Let's face it, we are all on the quest to radiant, youthful skin and many of us will invest both time and money perfecting our daily beauty routine, but there are still a number of mistakes or bad habits should I say, that we are likely doing daily that can and will make us look older than our years! Eek.So read on to find out what they are, and if you are currently committing any of them, you know to stop now! Therefore anti-ageing skincare rich in ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, collagen, and vitamin C become essential. For more info on this read about the top 5 skincare ingredients as recommended by the experts and adjust your products accordingly. Going to bed with makeup on Well here's one you've heard many a time before! Right? From a few too many wines to being just plain old exhausted, sometimes it hard to peel yourself off your bed to go and remove your makeup but remove your makeup you must!Cleansing your face especially at night to remove not only your makeup but any remnants of the days sweat, dirt and grime is imperative for healthy skin. Not removing your makeup means your skin is unable to regenerate effectively while you sleep, pores clog, and fatigue (ageing!) signs start to appear. For a fantastic makeup remover which effectively melts away makeup and grime with minimum effort try Phytomer's Doux Contour Eye and Lip Waterproof Makeup Remover. Combining the effectiveness of an oil (a trio of oils in fact) and the gentleness of a lotion, this ultra-hydrating makeup remover, eradicates even the most stubborn of lips and eye makeup fast!To read more about sleeping in makeup and what it really does to our skin click here. Skipping on your moisturiser It's that time of the month and a few pesky pimples have reared their ugly head, or you are often prone to adult acne or simply suffer from oily skin, so think it best to lay off the moisturiser which must be exacerbating the issue right? Wrong. While you are likely not alone in thinking lathering up on moisturiser seems counterproductive, everyone, no matter what your skin type or concern, needs to apply a moisturiser daily! When searching for the right moisturiser for your skin type they do tend to be categorised by skin concern so you just need to research and find the right one for your skin's needs. Just be sure to opt for lighter moisturisers by day, especially in the warmer months, and richer creams at night. For oily skin types, we highly recommend Phytomer's Oligopur Hydra Matifying Control Cream. It's an ultra-light cream that controls oil and breakthrough shine throughout the day. No shine, no greasy feeling, no heaving feeling! If your skin is prone to pimples try Phytomer Acnipure Blemish Solution Fluid, it's a lightweight gel-cream that fights acne without clogging pores or irritating skin. It also helps eliminate shine, diminishes the appearance of blemishes, and prevents future breakouts!! Wearing SPF only during the summer Hands down the no. 1 contributor to skin ageing is skipping your SPF.Yes, it's easy to remember to apply it when you're headed to the beach, or out and about on holiday, but so many of us skip this vital step in our everyday lives and not because we are necessarily lazy but because we don't understand the long term affect not wearing it will have on our skin! Being exposed to UV rays will make your skin age quicker, creating fine lines, wrinkles, sunspots, and more...Applying sunscreen daily all through the year will assist in keeping skin looking younger. Just remember the higher the factor the better especially in the warmer months. Layering your skin with a high factor SPF moisturiser and then foundation will give you the best chance of maintaining skin's youthful appearance, but if you are in love with your daily moisturiser which doesn't contain sun protection, still use it and then apply a lightweight SPF like the ELES Luminous Defence Brightening Day Protection SPF 50. Not only does it protect skin against the sun’s harmful rays, it also helps prevent discolouration while diminishing existing dark spots and calming and brightening your complexion at the same time!Still be sure you use a foundation with SPF for that extra protection and coverage though, as chances are when you apply sunscreen, you'll skip vital spots that you won't do with your foundation. The ELES best-selling Liquid Powder Mineral Foundation SPF15 is an institution. It's a silky, mineral-enriched liquid formula with broad spectrum sun protection that literally glides on to skin and sets to a soft powder finish. Loved by everyone who tries it you won't be disappointed! Focusing only on Wrinkles While we are all concerned about fine lines and wrinkles as we age, dark spots and pigmentation can actually give our complexion a dull, devitalised and in turn much older appearance too! In fact, dark spots and uneven skin tone can make us look 10 years older! So if you suffer from hyperpigmentation ensure you introduce products specifically to help with this like concern. We promise it'll positively impact your complexion and protect your skin too. Try Vie Collection's Mela White Radiance Brightening Essense, a triple-action daily cream that effectively acts against dark spots, free radicals, and UV. The results will speak for themselves. Rubbing Your Eyes The area around your eyes is the most delicate on your face, fact. When we are tired it's easy to fall into the trap of rubbing our eyes, or when applying eye makeup with precision. We've all been guilty of pulling at our eyes I'm sure, but tugging, rubbing or pulling at your eye area can cause tiny blood vessles to break resulting in dark circles that make you look tired All. Of. The. Time. Instead, start applying an anti-ageing eye cream morning and night pronto! I am currently loving Vie Collection's Chrono Eyes Puffiness-Dark Circles Wrinkles Cream. It's a beautifully fine cream enriched with moisturising ingredients to nourish the eye area while reversing puffiness, dark circles and wrinkles! Seriously! There are neck and chest specific products you can use, I personally use Pevonia's Age Correction Rapid Restore Neck and Chest religiously, it's a 2 in 1 serum and cream which hydrates, nourishes refines and brightens skin for a more youthful appearance while smoothing wrinkles too! But there is also nothing wrong with using your daily moisturiser or a hydrating body cream instead! Just start doing it now! Avoiding exfoliators It's not just fine lines and wrinkles that make you look older, having a dull uneven skin tone can easily add years to your face as well!As we age our skin's natural ability to shed dead cells declines, so without weekly exfoliation skin can become uneven, dull and lacklustre. This is why exfoliation is so imperative, and not a step that should be ignored. Many people are scared of exfoliation because they think their skin is too sensitive, and it will just aggravate an existing issue, but that's where natural enzyme exfoliators can be the answer. Both Phytomer's Vegetal Exfoliant with Natural Enzymes and Pevonia's Enzymo Spherides Peeling Cream are formulated with natural enzymes which basically melt away dead cells so no scrubbing is needed. Over exfoliating can actually slow cell turnover, cause chronic skin irritation and inflammation which can lead to accelerated ageing. Stick to exfoliation once a week for the best results. If you ilke to use an exfoliator with grains or microbeads but skin tends to be a little on the sensitive side give Pevonia's Gentle Exfoliating Cleanser a go. it’s great for those who love physical exfoliators with granules but want to steer clear of facial scrubs which could be a little harsh on the skin. It gently polishes your complexion with its unique creamy yet granular texture, formulated with jojoba beads, saponaria and chamomile, revealing a softer, smoother and brighter complexion every time! And in the month of September if you purchase Pevonia Vitamin C Complexe (the perfect skin-brightening summer serum) you'll receive a full size Gentle Exfoliating Cleanser for FREE Not drinking enough water As I'm sitting here writing this, I can hold my hands up and say today so far I've only drunk 2 glasses of water when I should have in fact consumed at least a litre by now! And dewy skin equals youthful skin after all!Not a huge fan of water? Try a good herbal tea instead. Extreme water temperatures How many of us are guilty of indulging in a hot shower or simply washing our faces with water set to a high temp. But really for best and healthy results we should be washing with lukewarm water. This is because extreme water temperatures will strip healthy natural oils from your skin quickly, making it dry and therefore age much faster. Water that's too hot can also dilate your capillaries leading to spider veins. Not getting enough sleep....when you could get more If I had a dollar for every time I said to my husband I must get to bed early tonight because I need more sleep and am fed up of looking old and tired, I'd be a rich woman. While they say practice what you preach, I am a testament that not getting enough sleep (when I could indeed fit in another 1-2 hours a night (darn netflix!) literally does age you.Poor sleep is quite literally to blame for premature ageing, dermatitis, eczema, acne, loss of collagen and more! Scary right? So let's make a pact and try for that 8 hours + we really do need nightly. Now be sure to follow our advice to be sure you slow down the signs of ageing naturally!

Dermatologists Share Their Advice for Great Skin

by Jo Boyden on Jun 26 2019
Here at Beauty Collective HQ, we constantly receive a smorgasbord of questions from our customers, and while we are brimming with great tips, rituals and product recommendations, we too often seek advice from our esteemed suppliers and dermatologists alike. To learn about the skin-care tips these pros live by, read on…Use any downtime to do a skin treatment“I keep extra beauty treatments in my car in a little bag. When I'm in bad traffic (at a red light of course), I apply serum, an eye mask, teeth whitening strips, eyebrow gel, and more!" -Francesca Fusco, dermatologist.Ok, while we don’t recommend performing facials when in the car! We do agree that having the right products in the right places (think by the bed or by the hand basin) may encourage you to apply some of those products we often forget such as a good anti-ageing hand cream and a gorgeous eye and lip balm. We love Phytomer - Oleocreme Ultra-Nourishing Hand Cream for a daily dose of hydrating marine oils.Practice a facial massage to fight wrinkles"Many people (myself included) frown and scrunch their faces at night, leading to frown lines and crow’s feet. To relax my face, I do facial acupressure for a few minutes at bedtime. Press above your inner eyebrows, temples, and next to your nostrils, holding for 10 seconds each." –Jessica Wu, dermatologist. We agree there is nothing better for smoothing tension wrinkles than a soothing massage and we are all addicted to the Rosee Soin from Phytomer. It’s a heavenly dry oil that rejuvenates your skin, calms your senses and leaves skin super soft and hydrated. A few drops massaged onto a cleansed skin at night (you can do this while watching your favourite TV series) will smooth out any stress lines you’ve earned that day.Hydrate your skin from the inside out—and outside in"Despite what you hear all the time, the amount of water you drink daily doesn't translate into proper skin hydration. It's vital to hydrate your skin from the outside in with serums, creams, and hydrating mists." –Dendy Engelman, dermatologist. It’s very true and never so true as in Winter when artificial heating and a more sedentary lifestyle can leave our skin parched and thirsty. Our go-to for deep hydration is the Vie Collection - Wrinkle Dimension Hyaluronic Acid Concentrate. It attracts and binds water to the skin keeping it super soft and super supple. The perfect skin drink.Avoid hot showers that can be drying"I never wash my face with hot water–it is too harsh. Only tepid water at the sink." -Elizabeth Tanzi, clinical professor of dermatology.Gentle cleansing of the skin with warm (not hot) water is not only better for managing your skin’s natural pH but will also prevent moisture loss on a grand scale. To remove makeup and the days grime at night we all reach for the ELES - Transformation Cleansing Oil. It emulsifies foundation and binds impurities that can be washed away in water and leaves the skin balanced and soft and ready for your serums and creams.Apply sunscreen to your neck, chest, and hands first"Apply sunscreen to the neck, chest, and hands before the face–these areas age faster and are harder to improve than the face. We often forget to apply sunscreen there even though they're exposed as much as the face." –Doris Day, dermatologist. We absolutely agree with this one! Sunscreen is your bestie when it comes to anti-ageing skin care. Our favourite is the Medicalia - Sunscreen SPF 30. It’s lightweight and totally reliable and comes in a generous 150ml tube so there’s no excuse for leaving out your neck, chest and hands!Don't ever rub your eyes"If you rub your eyes like you are scrubbing a pot, your eyes will look black like a pot! When you're taking off eye makeup, gently wipe off mascara as if you're touching an egg." –Jeanine Downie, dermatologist.Very true and we agree that a good product to remove your eye makeup will mean you don’t have to rub, it will do all the work for you! Our go-to is Phytomer - Micellar Water Eye Makeup Removal Solution. It’s strong enough to remove waterproof makeup but gentle enough for even the most sensitive eyes.Let your lips guide your skin care routine."One tip to know when your skin is ready for seriously creamy moisturizers: Your lips feel dry first, so you know the humidity has dropped, and it's time for more moisture." –Ellen Marmur, dermatologist.Lips are a great indicator for hydration levels and we look after ours with Phytomer - Youth Contour Reviving Wrinkle Correction Cream –Eye and Lip. Not only does this wonderful multi-tasker protect our precious lips but also our delicate eye contours.Check the menu for skin-saving fatty acids"Your diet has a huge impact on your skin. Avoid starchy vegetables and refined carbohydrates like white bread and rice and instead opt for foods high in omega 3's and fatty acids like avocados and salmon to help give you that youthful glow." –Whitney Bowe, dermatologist.Fatty Acids are also a great addition to topical skin care and Phytomer - Hydracontinue Radiance Energizing Cream contains Buckthorn Pulp extract which is super-rich in Omega-7, a very rare essential fatty acid that stimulates cell metabolism and increases cell vitality.
