8 ingredients your sensitive skin should avoid

8 ingredients your sensitive skin should avoid

by Jo Boyden on Mar 31 2026
If you have sensitive skin, you already know it can feel like everything is a potential trigger. That new “gentle, nourishing, and dermatologist-tested” product that sounded so ideal for your easily irritated complexion, turned out to be not-so-gentle after all, leaving you with a red, stinging face! The thing is, sensitive skin is often the result of a thinner or compromised skin barrier. This means irritants, allergens, and harsh actives can sneak in far more easily than they would for someone with a more resilient complexion. What makes it even trickier is that the culprits aren’t always obvious. In fact, many of the ingredients most likely to trigger sensitivity are hiding in plain sight! Even in products marketed specifically for "sensitive" skin! That’s why becoming confident at reading ingredient labels is one of the most valuable skincare skills you can have. Knowing what to leave out of your routine is just as important as knowing what to include. And once you understand which ingredients tend to cause trouble, caring for sensitive skin becomes so much easier, we promise! To help you shop smarter and keep your complexion calm, we’ve rounded up the top ingredient’s experts agree sensitive skin should always avoid.   What your sensitive skin really means Sensitive skin isn’t just a “type”, it’s a condition. At its core, it usually comes down to a compromised skin barrier, which means your skin isn’t as strong or resilient as it should be. As a result, it reacts more easily to ingredients, environmental stress, and even changes in routine. This is why products that work beautifully for others can cause redness, stinging, breakouts, or inflammation for you. The goal with sensitive skin isn’t to overload it with actives, it’s to protect, strengthen, and support it!   The 8 ingredients to avoid From strong fragrances to overly drying alcohols, there are a few common ingredients that can make sensitive skin worse without you realising it. 1. Fragrance (synthetic & natural) Fragrance is one of the most common triggers for sensitive skin and one of the easiest to overlook! It’s often listed as “parfum” or “aroma” and can even include essential oils. Why avoid it:Fragrance can cause irritation, redness, and allergic reactions, especially with repeated use. Even natural fragrance isn’t always gentle on reactive skin.   2. Denatured alcohol (Alcohol Denat.) Not all alcohols are bad but denatured alcohol is one your skin could definitely do without! Why avoid it:It strips the skin of its natural oils, weakens the barrier, and can leave your skin feeling tight, dry, and more prone to irritation.   3. Essential Oils While they sound calming and natural, essential oils can be surprisingly reactive for sensitive skin. Why avoid them:Ingredients like citrus oils, peppermint, and eucalyptus can trigger redness and sensitivity, particularly in already compromised skin.   4. Exfoliating acids (overuse of AHAs/BHAs) Exfoliation is important, we know this but with sensitive skin, more is definitely not more! Why be cautious:Over-exfoliating can damage the skin barrier, leading to increased redness, irritation, and sensitivity. Strong acids or frequent use can quickly tip your skin out of balance. To read about exfoliation and sensitive skin and what you should do, click here.   5. Sulphates (SLS & SLES) These are commonly found in cleansers and are responsible for that foamy, “squeaky clean” feeling. Why avoid them:They can be overly stripping, removing essential moisture and leaving the skin barrier vulnerable and irritated, not good when you already have a compromised skin barrier!   6. Strong retinol and retinoids Retinol and retinoids can be outstanding when it comes to ageing but are very powerful! Therefore, they need to be approached very carefully if your skin is sensitive. Why be cautious:They can cause peeling, dryness, and irritation, particularly if introduced too quickly or used in high strengths. For everything you need to know about retinol and sensitive skin click here. And if retinol still scares you, here are some outstanding alternatives for your sensitive skin.   7. High-Concentration Vitamin C (L-Ascorbic Acid) Vitamin C is a glow-boosting favourite, but not all forms are suitable for sensitive skin. Why be cautious:High concentrations can be too stimulating, leading to stinging and redness. Gentler derivatives are often a better option. Look for vitamin C serums formulated with a gentle derivative such as sodium ascorbyl phosphate, magnesium ascorbyl phosphate or Tetrahexyldecyl ascorbate, these vitamin C forms are considered more stable and less irritating. 8. Artificial Colours & Dyes These are often added purely for aesthetic reasons — and your skin doesn’t need them. Why avoid them:They offer no skin benefit and can increase the risk of irritation or allergic reactions.   What skincare ingredients your sensitive skin does need Instead of focusing only on what to avoid, it’s equally important to prioritise ingredients that will support and strengthen your skin barrier. These include; Niacinamide (Vitamin B3) Niacinamide enhances the skin’s natural barrier by increasing the production of ceramides, which are essential for locking in moisture and protecting the skin from environmental stressors. Niacinamide is also known for its anti-inflammatory properties, making it a great choice for those with sensitive, rosacea or acne-prone skin. It helps to calm redness and irritation, leading to a clearer, more even complexion. Ceramides When you suffer from sensitive or easily reactive skin, ceramides can be especially beneficial. They help to protect, repair and strengthen your skins barrier, shielding it from external aggressors such as harsh weather conditions, bacteria and pollutants. This helps reduce skin redness, irritation and sensitivity. Ceramides also help your skin hold onto moisture. They act like little sponges, preventing water loss and keeping your skin hydrated and plump! Hyaluronic acid Hyaluronic acid is a powerful hydrating ingredient that attracts and retains moisture within the skin. For sensitive skin, maintaining hydration is key to keeping the barrier strong and functioning optimally. By drawing water into the skin, it helps to reduce dryness, tightness and discomfort, leaving the complexion feeling soft, smooth and comfortably hydrated without causing irritation. Panthenol (Vitamin B5) Panthenol is a deeply soothing and restorative ingredient that works to calm irritation while supporting the skin’s natural repair process. It helps to strengthen the skin barrier, improve hydration levels, and reduce redness, making it particularly beneficial for compromised or reactive skin. It also leaves the skin feeling soft, supple, and more resilient over time. Calming botanicals (like White Water Lily (Nymphaea Alba), Chamomile, Centella Asiatica, Cucumber & Aloe Vera) Calming botanicals are essential for soothing sensitive skin and reducing visible signs of irritation. Ingredients such as White Water Lily, centella asiatica, chamomile, and aloe vera work to gently calm inflammation, minimise redness, and provide lightweight hydration. They help restore balance to the skin, leaving it feeling comforted, refreshed, and more stable.   All these ingredients help calm irritation, restore hydration, and build resilience over time.   A few of our favourites for sensitive skin: Pevonia Sensitive Skin Cleanser Packed with chamomile and other soothing botanicals, this natural cleanser specifically designed to gently cleanse sensitive skin, is both calming and comforting. It’s non-irritating formula effectively removes impurities, excess oil, and makeup without stripping the skin or disrupting its barrier. Makeup for sensitive skin: What works and what to avoid

by Jo Boyden on Mar 20 2026
You’ve finally found a foundation that sounds perfect! The coverage is gorgeous, the finish is flawless, but minutes after first applying it, your skin is itching, burning, or turning bright red. Sound like something you’ve experienced? The truth is a lot of everyday makeup is packed with ingredients that sensitive skin simply can’t tolerate. But that doesn’t mean you have to choose between a flawless finish and a calm complexion, and it certainly doesn't mean you have to skip makeup altogether (because let’s be honest, who would want to do that!) You just need to choose formulas that actually work with your skin, not against it. Keep reading to discover the products and ingredients you need to avoid, plus how to build a makeup routine your sensitive skin will genuinely love!   Firstly, what to avoid when it comes to sensitive skin Just as important as what you use, is what to avoid! When you have sensitive skin, your makeup should essentially be an extension of your skincare. If a product is sitting on your face for 8–10 hours a day, it needs to be "breathable" and free from the common irritants that trigger irritation. Firstly, make sure you steer clear of matte, heavy and full-coverage foundations, this is because they can sit on the skin and trap heat. Any makeup that is highly fragranced or is formulated with harsh or drying formulas that disrupt the skin barrier are a no no (so make sure you check the ingredients before buying! Nothing labelled with "parfum" or "fragrance, alcohol denat, isopropyl alcohol, or ethanol, and try to avoid talc‑heavy powders as they can be drying and aggravating. You’ll also want to avoid highly pigmented eye products as they are more likely to cause stinging or redness. And finally, while I preach about SPF all the time you need to be careful what sunscreen you are putting on your skin! Chemical filters work by absorbing UV rays and turning them into heat in the skin. For someone with rosacea or heat-sensitive skin, this extra heat can trigger a massive flush! So make sure if your foundation has SPF in it, it’s of the physical (mineral) kind like Zinc Oxide or Titanium Dioxide, which sit on top of the skin and reflect heat away! Remember sensitive skin doesn’t need more, it simply needs better, more considered formulas!   What your sensitive skin needs Whether you deal with rosacea, eczema, or just general sensitivity and reactivity, you want to keep things gentle, breathable and supportive of your skin barrier. Mineral-based formulas work wonders but make sure you look for additional hydrating and soothing ingredients too, like hyaluronic acid, glycerin, squalane, green tea, calendula or allantoin.   Why mineral makeup works so well if you have sensitive skin Mineral makeup is often a game-changer for those with reactive or easily irritated skin. This is because of a number of reasons including; It’s lightweight and breathable Mineral makeup is less likely to clog pores It’s so much gentler on the skin barrier It treats skin while you wear it (yes please) Many mineral foundations are buildable without ever looking heavy And finally mineral makeup enhances the complexion without overwhelming it And also when done well, it gives that beautiful “your skin, but better” finish that so many of us are looking for!   Your sensitive skin-friendly make routine If you’re looking to simplify your routine while keeping your skin calm and comfortable, here’s an easy, go-to approach using ELES mineral makeup.   Step 1: Start with a lightweight, skin-loving base A heavy foundation is often where things go wrong for sensitive skin. You want to conceal any redness, but your full coverage foundation can exacerbate any irritation! Instead, opt for something breathable and hydrating like the ELES Mineral Glow Skin Tint SPF 15. It’s one of my personal new absolute favourites, but more so it’s perfect for sensitive skin because it provides sheer, buildable coverage, it contains mineral SPF for gentle protection, it’s enriched with hyaluronic acid and squalane for hydration and it includes calming botanicals to help soothe and support the skin! What more can you ask? Oh and it evens out the complexion to perfection while still letting your natural skin shine through, no heaviness, no irritation just a subtle flawless glow – really! Step 2: Conceal only where you need it Rather than layering foundation everywhere, use a small amount of concealer just where needed. This helps avoid overloading the skin while still giving covering any blemishes to give you a polished finish. Less really is more here. Try the ELES Adjustable Coverage Concealer. It really is a dream for sensitive skin, delivering creamy, hydrating coverage that brightens and conceals redness and blemishes without caking or creasing. Enriched with soothing, nourishing ingredients, it softens, conditions, and protects while blending seamlessly for a natural, skin‑like finish. Comfortable, buildable, and beautifully gentle.  Step 3: Make sure you add soft, natural definition Sensitive skin often looks best with soft, natural makeup rather than anything too heavy or structured. Mineral-based blushes are ideal because they sit lightly on the skin, blend seamlessly and add colour without irritation. And I know you might be thinking no to blush when you are already dealing with facial redness but a soft flush of blush in the right place (apples of cheeks) can instantly bring life back to the complexion.  Step 4: Keep powder to a minimum Setting powder is where a lot of sensitive skin routines fall apart, heavy powders can feel suffocating and trigger congestion then can also be drying. Make sure you choose the right setting powder for your skin and apply just a small amount only where needed (usually the T-zone), this will keep your skin looking fresh and avoids that dry, tight feeling. The ELES Baked Finishing Powder is feather-light and sheer, taming shine and adding a soft radiance without sitting heavily on your skin. A light dusting is all you need to set your base and keep everything in place. Step 5: Finish with a few subtle touches Keeping the overall look fresh and minimal not only suits sensitive skin it also enhances your natural features beautifully. So to complete your look add a light coat of mascara to your lashes (for sensitive eyes the ELES Sensitive Eyes Mascara is great!) if you like to use eyeshadow for colour and definition stick with mineral shadows as they are clinically formulated for the fragile eye area, hypoallergenic, and sensitivity-tested, making them suitable for even the most sensitive skin! Softly define your blows and add a light touch of lippie that won't dry out or irritate. The ELES lip range is hydrating, fragrance-free, and comes in gorgeous wearable shades. Each lipstick delivers rich colour with a comfortable, non-drying formula, and the Pucker Up Lip Gloss gives you a plumping, high-shine finish that feels as good as it looks. Voila! Remember makeup for sensitive skin isn’t about giving up on coverage, glow or a polished look, it’s about working with your skin, not against it. With gentle, mineral-based formulas, hydrating ingredients and a lighter approach to application, you can achieve a beautiful, radiant finish while keeping your skin calm and happy (no burn, itch or redness flare-up in sight!)
Why your skin is suddenly sensitive and how to calm it fast

Why your skin is suddenly sensitive and how to calm it fast

by Jo Boyden on Mar 06 2026
Has your skin suddenly decided to become sensitive overnight? One day it was fine, but now it’s red, tight, tingly or itchy perhaps? Unfortunately, sensitivity can come out of nowhere, and when it does it can feel confusing and frustrating when the products you’ve always loved suddenly make your skin flare! The thing is our skin barrier is delicate, and when it’s overwhelmed, it lets you know! The sudden sensitivity you are experiencing is actually incredibly common though and once you understand why it’s happening, you can calm it quickly and get your skin back to feeling like itself again! Keep reading for your guide and the best solutions to help calm sensitivity quickly and effectively!   So why is your skin sudden sensitive? Before you can “fix” your suddenly sensitive skin, you need to know what happened! Skin doesn’t become reactive for no reason. When sensitivity appears out of the blue, it’s usually because something has disrupted your skin barrier (the protective layer that keeps moisture in and irritants out.) When that barrier weakens, everything feels like too much. The most common triggers include; Stress & lifestyle shifts When you're stressed, your body produces cortisol, which can increase inflammation and weaken your skin’s ability to defend and repair itself. Lack of sleep, travel, and even diet changes can also make your skin more reactive. Ingredient overload AHAs, BHAs, retinol, Vitamin C, scrubs, peels… all amazing, but all capable of tipping your skin over the edge if used too often or layered incorrectly. Sometimes, your skin just needs a break from "actives". Environmental stressors Sudden cold snaps, heatwaves, Sun exposure, wind, dry air, humidity, pollution can all weaken your barrier and increase reactivity. This is one of the biggest reasons people experience sensitivity during seasonal transitions. Without daily SPF and barrier support, irritation shows up fast! Product irritants Fragrances, drying alcohols and aggressive foaming agents can trigger stinging, redness and discomfort especially when the barrier is already compromised.   What you need to do now Sensitive skin thrives on simplicity! While you might have been loving your lengthy morning and nighttime routine it’s time to press pause on any strong actives (so temporarily stop any exfoliating acids, retinoids and potent vitamin C serums you may be using. Your goal right now is comfort, not “glass skin.”)  It’s time to keep your routine to just a few simple steps which includes; A gentle, non-stripping cleanser Harsh foams strip natural oils and disrupt the barrier. Switch to creamy or milky cleansers that soothe while they cleanse. A creamy, barrier-friendly cleanser melts away makeup and impurities without tightness, perfect for reactive skin! A soothing, nourishing serum When skin feels tight or inflamed, it needs hydration and calming actives, not more stripping. A barrier-support moisturiser Strengthening the skin’s barrier helps it handle irritation and reduces future flare-ups. Barrier-supporting moisturisers and prebiotic concentrates help balance microbiota and reinforce resilience. And of course, in the day your SPF Sun exposure can make sensitivity worse. A gentle SPF protects the skin and prevents further irritation. Even on cloudy days, daily mineral-based SPF calms and shields reactive skin. Introduce a mask at night At night, once a week while you get your skin back on track, including a sensitive skin mask. Keeping your routine simple but consistent is one of the best ways to reduce reactivity and strengthen your skin’s resilience over time. And remember always wash your skin in lukewarm water, this can make all the difference!   The soothing sensitive skin solutions you need   1. Phytomer Accept Cica - Milky Cream Cleanser 125ml This beautifully nourishing, creamy cleaner gently cleanses skin, removing makeup, while soothing any discomfort and strengthening skin's protective barrier reducing tingling and tightness. It leaves a protective film on the skin too to provide comfort and nutrition! 2. Pevonia Soothing Propolis Concentrate This is a literal "miracle in a bottle" for sensitive souls. Propolis is a bee-derived ingredient known for its incredible healing and antibacterial properties. It works to calm micro-inflammation and strengthen your skin's defences without any of the harshness found in traditional treatments. It’s light, silky, and works wonders on everything from hormonal breakouts to wind-chapped cheeks! Use a few drops on clean skin before your moisturiser, concentrating on areas that are red, reactive or prone to breakouts. 3. Phytomer Oligoforce Soothing Enforcement Serum If you are suffering with sensitivity and facial flareups, we swear by this product! It helps calm and soothe irritated or sensitive skin instantly. It contains anti-inflammatory Phycosaccharide to reduce stinging sensations and is infused with OLIGOMER® (seawater concentrate) which delivers 104 trace elements and minerals to heal and protect. Pevonia RS2 Rosacea Skin Cream This is one of BC’s all-time best-sellers for a reason. It’s a fragrance-free, therapeutic moisturiser that acts like a protective hug for your face. Using calming, soothing and antibacterial ingredients like Green Tea, Licorice and Chamomile, it helps to comfort, calm and desensitise the skin, reducing redness and making it less likely to react to environmental triggers. Don’t let the name ‘Rosacea’ put you off either. Of course, it was formulated with rosacea prone skin in mind but it’s the perfect calming, nurturing and nourishing cream for anyone with flareups, sensitivity and irritability! What’s more this March, when you purchase it, you’ll receive the matching RS2 Cleanser and Lotion 50ml for FREE. 5. Phytomer Accept Comfort Mask For those nights when your face feels hot, tight or reactive, a mask like this one can be a godsend. Think of this as a cool glass of water for your face. Specifically formulated for reactive and "intolerant" skin, this mask uses purified yeast extract and soothing marine ingredients to instantly lower the temperature of your skin. It helps to decongest redness and leaves your face feeling soft and most importantly comfortable again! What’s more it strengthens the barrier over time so skin reacts less and less! Tip: Use it 2–3 times a week, or as an emergency “my skin is freaking out” treatment. Apply a generous layer after cleansing, leave it on while you unwind, then gently remove any excess. It’s also good to keep this in the fridge for 10 minutes before applying for an extra-cooling "cryo" effect!    With the right products, routine tweaks and a focus on calming instead of stripping, your skin can find its balance again. And when you treat sensitivity with care, you’ll notice not only reduced irritation but a healthier, more comfortable complexion overall.
Rosacea Relief: Expert tips and products to calm and treat skin

Rosacea Relief: Expert tips and products to calm and treat skin

by Jo Boyden on Apr 11 2025
If you have rosacea, you’ll know how unpredictable it can be, one day your skin will feel calm, the next irritation can totally take over! The thing is while rosacea can’t be cured per se, there are things you can do to keep your symptoms at bay. Whether you’re dealing with persistent redness, facial flare-ups, pesky pimples or discomfort, we’ve gathered expert-approved tips and product recommendations to help you soothe and protect your sensitive skin.   Firstly, exactly what is rosacea, and do you have this skincare condition? Rosacea is a chronic and progressive, micro-circulation disorder visibly resulting in persistent redness, dilated capillaries, congestion, and last but not least, papules and pustules (breakouts!), so if you have suffered/are suffering from spells of facial flushing and blushing presenting skin redness, pimples, dilated capillaries and sometimes a burning sensation it’s likely you do have rosacea.   What are the most common rosacea triggers? It’s important to understand what your triggers are when it comes to your flare ups. Rosacea-prone skin is highly reactive, meaning it responds aggressively to environmental triggers, harsh ingredients, and even stress. The most common rosacea triggers include sun exposure, extreme temperatures, spicy foods, hot drinks like coffee and tea, alcohol, certain skincare ingredients, hormonal changes and unfortunately stress! Because the skin barrier is often compromised, it’s crucial to strengthen and protect it with gentle, nourishing formulas.   How to treat rosacea 1. You’ll want to choose gentle, fragrance-free skincare When it comes to rosacea, less is more. Make sure you avoid (at all costs!) harsh cleansers, alcohol-based toners, and heavily fragranced products, as these can worsen irritation. Instead, opt for a gentle, hydrating cleanser a soothing serum and calming, non-comedogenic moisturiser with barrier-strengthening ingredients to lock in moisture. Products designed specifically for rosacea skin will be best. 2. Protect your skin with SPF daily Sun exposure is one of the biggest triggers for rosacea flare-ups. A broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher is essential to prevent redness and irritation. Look for mineral-based sunscreens containing zinc oxide or titanium dioxide, as they are less likely to cause reactions. 3. Invest in soothing ingredients The ingredients in your skincare are imperative when it comes to treating rosacea. You’ll want to look out for skincare with ingredients that help calm inflammation and strengthen the skin barrier including; Aloe Vera – Hydrates and reduces redness Green Tea Extract – Rich in antioxidants that soothe irritation Centella Asiatica – Helps repair and strengthen sensitive skin Chamomile – Calms and soothes reactive skin French Rose – Anti-inflammatory and calming it soothes sensitive, rosacea prone skin 4. Avoid common irritants Unfortunately like with the common triggers (which you also need to avoid!), certain ingredients can exacerbate rosacea symptoms, so it’s best to steer clear of alcohol, synthetic fragrances, menthol, and exfoliants like glycolic acid. If you’re unsure about a product, do a patch test before applying it to your face first! 5. Stay consistent and be patient Rosacea can’t be cured, but with the right regimen, symptoms can be managed and flare-ups reduced. Avoid frequently switching products and give new routines time, results may take several weeks. 6. Last but not least when it comes to makeup go mineral! This is because mineral makeup is gentle, non-comedogenic, and free from irritants like fragrance and preservatives. Its natural, soothing ingredients help calm inflammation while offering breathable coverage that conceals redness without clogging pores or aggravating sensitive skin. Perfect for achieving a flawless finish with skin-loving benefits basically!   Best Products for Rosacea-Prone Skin We highly recommend the Pevonia Rosacea RS2 line! For more information on why it might be the perfection rosacea range for you click here. And to finish off your morning skincare routine and before you apply your makeup for rosacea skin you need to make sure you don’t skip on your sunscreen! Of course daily SPF is a necessity for everyone to protect skin against premature ageing and hyperpigmentation, but if you suffer from rosacea you’ll know that sun exposure is one of the biggest triggers for flare ups! UV rays can increase redness, inflammation, and sensitivity, making rosacea symptoms worse over time. A good sunscreen helps protect the skin’s barrier, preventing further irritation and reducing the risk of long-term damage. And we get it! If you have rosacea or sensitive skin, you might be a little reluctant to slather on sunscreen but Hubislab Herb 8 Soothing Blemish Balm SPF 30 PA++ is the ideal SPF! It soothes and regenerates sensitive skin while protecting skin against sun damage, premature skin ageing including dark spots, and other external factors. Its clever formulation of Zinc oxide, UVA and UVB protection and 8 herbal extracts also ensures the prevention of wrinkles and inflammation. Daily sun protection is one of the best ways to keep rosacea-prone skin calm, healthy, and happy.

Tranexamic Acid: The best ingredient for hyperpigmentation

Tranexamic Acid: The best ingredient for hyperpigmentation

by Jo Boyden on Feb 28 2025
If you’re dealing with stubborn dark spots, uneven skin tone, or even redness, there’s a powerhouse ingredient you need to know about - tranexamic acid. While it may not be as “famous” as vitamin C or retinol, this expert-approved, skin brightener is quickly gaining a cult following for its ability to fade hyperpigmentation, calm inflammation, and even out the complexion, all without irritation! Whether you struggle with melasma, acne scars, or sun damage, tranexamic acid could be what your skincare routine has been lacking. But what exactly is it? and how does it work? Keep reading as we reveal all there is to know about this must-try skincare ingredient!   What Is Tranexamic Acid? Despite its name, tranexamic acid isn’t your typical exfoliating acid like glycolic or salicylic acid. Originally used in medicine to help with blood clotting and wound healing, this synthetic derivative of the amino acid, lysine (one of the essential amino acids) has been found to have incredible skin benefits and anti-spot properties, especially when it comes to hyperpigmentation, melasma, and post-inflammatory dark spots! Unlike stronger skin-lightening ingredients like retinol and vitamin C, tranexamic acid works gently yet effectively to inhibit melanin production and prevent the formation of darker areas, while calming inflammation, making it ideal for those with sensitive skin struggling with dark spots and redness or simply looking to brighten their complexion without irritation.   How tranexamic acid can benefit your skin Tranexamic acid is hands down the most effective ingredient of the moment when it comes to stubborn hyperpigmentation. In fact, it can benefit your skin in a number of ways; It fades hyperpigmentation and dark spots Tranexamic acid works by inhibiting melanogenesis, the process that leads to excessive production of melanin, the pigment that gives colour to your skin! This helps to prevent and fade dark spots caused by sun damage, melasma, hormonal changes or acne scars. Unlike some brightening ingredients that can be irritating, tranexamic acid is gentle and well-tolerated by most skin types. It helps to even out skin tone if you are struggling with an uneven complexion or dullness, tranexamic acid helps to create a brighter, more uniform skin tone by reducing discolouration and dullness. It effectively reduces redness and inflammation Not only does tranexamic acid target pigmentation, but it also has anti-inflammatory properties that calm redness and irritation, making it ideal for those with rosacea, sensitive skin, or post-acne marks.   How tranexamic acid works Tranexamic acid has an anti-plasmin effect. Applied to the skin, it can reduce excessive melanin production (inhibiting melanogenesis), which is generally the cause of dark spots. Currently, tranexamic acid is the only tested active ingredient that acts on three different pathways involved in the formation of dark spots; Melanin, the pigment responsible for giving colour to our skin, is produced within melanocytes. Tranexamic acid inhibits tyrosinase, an enzyme involved in melanin formation, thereby reducing the production of the pigment. Treatment of Keratinocytes Tranexamic acid inhibits the inflammatory process that accompanies the formation of spots, reducing areas with an inflammatory component (such as acne marks). Acts on blood vessels Tranexamic acid decreases vascularization in the affected area, which is crucial for treating melasma, as it has both melanin-based and vascular origins. Unlike common aesthetic treatments, tranexamic acid treats dark spots at the source. Laser treatments and peels, in fact, only remove the spot superficially but do not help prevent the appearance of new discolouration! Some spots, such as melasma, have a genetic component and can reappear over time. Regular use of tranexamic acid will not only reduce the appearance of these spots but also make the skin smoother and more even-toned.   Who Should Try Tranexamic Acid? If you’re dealing with stubborn pigmentation, dark spots, redness, or an uneven skin tone, tranexamic acid is definitely worth trying believe us! Unlike some harsher brightening ingredients, it’s a gentle, non-irritating, well-tolerated active ingredient and is safe for most skin types, including sensitive skin.   How to Use Tranexamic Acid in your daily skincare routine You’ll often find this superstar ingredient in serums, creams and spot treatments designed to target pigmentation and redness. For the best results you’ll want to use it daily morning and night, and in the morning be sure to follow with sunscreen. Since tranexamic acid works by preventing melanin overproduction, using SPF after is a must to maintain results and prevent further damage. One of the best things about tranexamic acid is that it pairs perfectly with other skincare ingredients. In fact, using tranexamic acid with vitamin C enhances the benefits of both active ingredients. While tranexamic acid works to slow down melanin production, vitamin C helps to lighten the skin and boost the brightness of the complexion. Together, they provide an effective treatment for hyperpigmentation and dark spots! And finally make sure you combine or layer it with hydrating ingredients for extra skin-soothing benefits like hyaluronic acid or niacinamide to support your skin barrier and lock in moisture.   The products Naturys Face B-Clear Serum Rich in tranexamic acid and other natural brightening botanical extracts including arbutin, betaine and shiitake mushroom, this light yet powerful organic and vegan friendly serum acts simultaneously on all mechanisms involved in hyperpigmentation, through multiple actions: it soothes, regenerates, protects and inhibits melanin precursors. It radically reduces dark spots and pigmentation while improving overall skin radiance! Hubislab Derma Max Brilliance Cream This instant brightening and whitening cream for day and night is formulated with tranexamic acid, titanium dioxide, patented whitening agent MADEWHITE and vitamin B compounds to suppress melanin formation and maintain a brightened skin tone. Rich in hydrating ingredients including Shea Butter and Macadamia Integrifolia Seed Oil, it also deeply nourishes and protects the skin with strong antibacterial action, while regulating the skin's oil-water balance for a rejuvenated, brighter complexion. The ultimate skincare routine for sensitive skin

The ultimate skincare routine for sensitive skin

by Jo Boyden on Jul 04 2024
If you have sensitive skin, you’ll know how challenging it can be to find the right skincare products that actually work and don’t just exacerbate your already inflamed skin! Redness, irritation, and dryness can make it seem next to impossible to achieving that calm, radiant complexion you so wish for, but impossible it is not! With the right approach and gentle products, you can soothe your sensitive skin and maintain its overall health. Keep reading for our guide to the ultimate skincare routine for sensitive skin. A guide we’ve tailored just for you, featuring must-have products and tips to keep your sensitive skin happy and healthy. Firstly though, why are you suffering from sensitive skin? Unfortunately sensitive skin can be caused by a variety of factors. It might be due to genetics (thanks mum and dad!), making your skin more reactive to certain triggers. Environmental factors such as pollution, extreme weather conditions, and exposure to harsh chemicals can also contribute. Over exfoliated skin or simply overuse of skincare products, especially those with strong fragrances or alcohol, can strip the skin's natural barrier, leading to sensitivity. Stress and hormonal changes can also play a significant role, disrupting the skin's balance. Additionally, underlying skin conditions like eczema or rosacea can cause heightened sensitivity. It’s best to try and identify and avoid your triggers (along with using gentle skincare products) to help manage your sensitive skin. The best skincare routine for sensitive skin Step 1: Start with a Gentle Cleanser The first step in any skincare routine is cleansing, but for sensitive skin, it's crucial to use a gentle, fragrance-free cleanser that doesn’t strip away natural oils. Opt for a fragrance-free, non-foaming cleanser with soothing and healing ingredients like aloe vera, glycerin, niacinamide and chamomile. Try: Naturys 2 in 1 Makeup Remover + Micellar Gel. Formulated with nasturtium and niacinamide, this natural 2-in-1 cleanser and makeup remover is good or all skin types but has been specifically targeted for sensitive skin. Gently but effectively it removes makeup, dirt and impurities from face and eyes without causing any irritation or dryness, leaving skin instantly fresh, soothed and more supple. How to Use: Use your fingertips to apply the cleanser and gently massage onto your face in circular motions. Rinse with lukewarm water and pat your skin dry with soft towel to avoid further irritation. Step 2: Hydrating Oil Oils are like potent treatments that target specific concerns deeply nurturing the skin. For sensitive skin, choose an oil that focuses on hydration and calming effects. Try: Naturys Sensitive Hydra Oil. This quick-absorbing soothing face oil is particularly suitable for sensitive skin types and is the best ally against skin redness and irritation, signs of stress, pollution and blue light. Rich in plant-based active ingredients, including blueberry oil, bisabolol, and lycopene, it protects skin from environmental damage while diffusing redness and discomfort. How to Use: Apply a few drops to clean, dry or slightly damp face and neck, gently patting it into your skin until fully absorbed. Can be used alone or mixed with your moisturiser. Step 3: Moisturiser Moisturising is essential for locking in hydration and protecting your skin barrier. Choose a moisturiser that is free from fragrances, dyes, and other potential irritants and instead opt for nourishing, soothing ingredients that will hydrate, calm and improve skin. Try: Naturys De-Sensitive Cream. The perfect antidote for reactive and dehydrated skin prone to redness, this beautifully nourishing cream effectively calms skin while combatting redness. Copper Tripeptides also help promote collagen and elastin production, firming the skin and reducing fine lines while increasing oxygen supply for more supple skin. How to Use: Apply the moisturiser to your face and neck, gently massaging it in until fully absorbed. Step 4: Sunscreen Sunscreen is a non-negotiable step in any skincare routine. But sadly sensitive skin is particularly vulnerable to sun damage so sunscreen is a must. Sensitive skin needs broad-spectrum protection without harsh chemicals. A mineral-based sunscreen is less likely to irritate and provides effective protection. Look for ingredients like zinc oxide or titanium dioxide. Try: Hubislab Post Rays UV Protect Sun Block SPF 50+++. Not only is it formulated with both zinc oxide and titanium dioxide so perfect for sensitive and ageing skin since zero irritation, it’s also rich in hydrolyzed Collagen and peptides keeping skin nourished, soft and supple! Its invisible matte formula also applies smoothly and stays on all day long! How to Use: Apply a generous amount of sunscreen to your face and neck every morning, even on cloudy days. Step 5: Weekly Treatment – Exfoliator A weekly treatment like an exfoliator can provide essential extra care for sensitive skin. And I know you might be thinking exfoliating sounds counterintuitive, after all you don’t want to exacerbate your already irritated skin, right? The thing is exfoliating is essential for everyone, no matter your skin type. Why? Because it removes dulling dead skin cells, prevents clogged pores and encourages cell turnover, you just have to be careful what sort of exfoliator you use! Try: Naturys Sensitive Enzymatic Peeling Cream. Formulated for all skin types including those suffering with common skin sensitivities, this exfoliant and regenerating cream gently removes dead cells and unclogs the pores without causing any irritation. As you work the cream into your skin, the pineapple and papaya enzymes, combined with AHAs and rice microgranules, gently but deeply exfoliate skin eliminating impurities, blackheads, dead cells, sebum and toxins. Your complexion after? Softer, smoother, calmer and brighter! How to Use: Apply the peel 1-2 times a week onto the face and delicately massage. Leave on for 5-7 minutes and rinse with warm water. Avoid the eye contours. Additional tips for sensitive skin Patch Test New Products: Always test new products on a small area of your skin before applying them to your entire face to ensure you don’t have an adverse reaction. Avoid Harsh Ingredients: Steer clear of products with alcohol, fragrances, and harsh exfoliants. Look for labels that indicate "hypoallergenic" and "non-comedogenic." Stay Hydrated and Maintain a Healthy Diet: Drinking plenty of water and eating a balanced diet rich in antioxidants can help support your skin's health. Remember taking care of sensitive skin doesn’t have to be daunting. By following this ultimate skincare routine and using gentle, effective products, you can reduce irritation, strengthen your skin barrier, and achieve a calm, radiant complexion. Remember consistency and patience are key!
Sensitive skin, rosacea or redness? Which do you have?

Sensitive skin, rosacea or redness? Which do you have?

by Jo Boyden on Apr 12 2024
Suffering from sensitive skin? Or is it rosacea perhaps? or maybe you are just prone to frequent redness and facial flushing? Identifying which of these common skin concerns you may have can be somewhat confusing, especially since they often share similar symptoms. But understanding their differences is essential as each condition can affect the skin in various ways!Keep reading as we outline the differences between sensitive skin, rosacea and facial redness, helping you to determine the most effective treatment approach for your skin’s specific needs! ROSACEAUnderstanding RosaceaRosacea is a chronic inflammatory skin condition characterised by redness, flushing, visible blood vessels, and sometimes acne-like bumps (papules and pustules). It typically affects the central part of the face, including the cheeks, nose, chin, and forehead. While the exact cause of rosacea is unknown, factors such as genetics, environmental triggers, and an overactive immune system may contribute to its development. Common triggers include sun exposure, hot or spicy foods, alcohol, stress, and certain skincare products.Managing RosaceaUnfortunately it’s not possible to eliminate rosacea altogether but you can effectively manage it and keep symptoms at bay! To manage rosacea you need to identify and avoid your triggers that can exacerbate symptoms.Unfortunately. sun exposure is the most common trigger for rosacea. While we may all love long days at the beach, if you suffer from rosacea your skin sadly will pay a price. Not only can sunburn make flare-ups even worse, the heat from the sun can also increase your body temperature which in turn dilates blood vessels and triggers inflammation! So you’ll want to make sure you avoid direct sun exposure as much as you can and wear SPF daily. Just be sure to opt for sensitive skin formulations that won’t aggravate your rosacea.Try Hubislab Herb 8 Soothing Blemish Balm SPF 30 PA++. It soothes and regenerates sensitive skin while protecting skin against sun damage, premature skin ageing including dark spots, and other external factors. Its clever formulation of Zinc oxide, UVA and UVB protection and 8 herbal extracts also ensures the prevention of wrinkles and inflammation.Gentle skincare products formulated for rosacea prone skin, free of harsh ingredients such as fragrance, alcohol, and abrasive exfoliants, are also a must!Look for products such as rosacea serum formulated with calming and soothing ingredients like green tea, licorice extract, chamomile extract, and French rose extract. We highly recommend Pevonia’s best-selling RS2 rosacea skincare line – a soothing, calming and irritant free collection that not only alleviates redness and discomfort but also helps create a healthy skin barrier. What’s more for the month of APRIL. When you purchase the Pevonia rosacea RS2 Care Cream, you’ll receive the matching Cleanser and Lotion 50ml for FREE. By getting plenty of rest and practicing meditation and yoga can help to keep stress and therefore rosacea at bay. SENSITIVE SKINUnderstanding Sensitive SkinSensitive skin is a common skin condition characterised by heightened reactivity to environmental factors, skincare products, and other external irritants.Symptoms may include redness, itching, burning, stinging, and tightness.Sensitive skin can be caused by a variety of factors, including genetics, allergies, skin barrier dysfunction, and exposure to harsh chemicals or environmental pollutants.Managing Sensitive SkinSensitive skin requires gentle care and attention to maintain its health and balance. It can be caused by various factors, including rosacea, sensitive skin, sunburn, allergies, irritation, inflammation, and underlying medical conditions. Redness may be temporary or chronic, depending on the underlying cause and triggers.Managing RednessManaging redness involves identifying and addressing the underlying cause. In addition to following a gentle skincare routine suitable for sensitive skin, incorporating anti-inflammatory ingredients such as green tea extract, niacinamide, and licorice root extract may help calm redness and soothe irritated skin. Sun protection is also crucial, as UV exposure can worsen redness and inflammation. When it comes to your red face you need to start with the basics – choose a mild, hydrating cleanser. Keep reading as we discuss the best skincare and makeup routine, specifically tailored just for your sensitive skin. Skincare routine for sensitive skin Identify your skin concerns First things first, understanding your specific skin concerns is crucial for tailoring your skincare routine. Sensitive skin can manifest in various ways, including dryness, redness, itchiness, and irritation. Know your triggers Specific ingredients and environmental factors can trigger skin sensitivity. Everything from fragrances and preservatives in soaps, beauty products and laundry detergents to the cold, sun and wind can cause skin irritation. Learn to know which are your triggers. To learn more about why you could be suffering from sensitive skin click here. Always choose gentle products with calming ingredients Opt for fragrance-free, hypoallergenic, and non-comedogenic products to minimize the risk of irritation. And always check the ingredients. You want your skincare products to be formulated with ingredients that soothe and nourish sensitive skin, such as aloe vera, chamomile, calendula and ceramides. These natural extracts have anti-inflammatory properties that can help soothe sensitive skin and reduce redness. Gentle Cleansing Now it's time to start your routine! Begin with your gentle cleanser designed for sensitive skin, which means it’ll be free from alcohol and harsh ingredients. Remember cleansing should be a soothing experience, not one that leaves your skin feeling tight and irritated!Try: Medicalia Gentle cleanser. Formulated with a unique natural blend of soothing Green Tea, Chamomile, and Oat Amino Acids, it beautifully cleanses skin both thoroughly and gently while preserving the skin barrier and reducing symptoms of inflammation too!“This cleanser is perfect for my super sensitive skin. Love it. Have been using for years.” Jane Hydration is key Keeping your skin well hydrated is crucial for sensitive skin (as it is with all skin types!) It’s an outstanding comforting cream with a beautifully light consistency which literally rescues skin by strengthening its protective barrier. It soothes, calms and comforts skin, conveniently remedying red patches.“I LOVE this cream. It feels wonderful when applied and I've noticed how much smoother and more radiant my sensitive skin is. My skin is so much more youthful! Smoother, plumper and visibly radiant! I couldn’t recommend more highly!!” Mary C Wear sunscreen every. single. day Protecting your sensitive skin from the sun's harmful UV rays is imperative so sun protection is non-negotiable, especially since UV rays can exacerbate sensitivity leading to redness and irritation.Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen of at least SPF 30 and you’re best to go for physical sunscreens like zinc or titanium dioxide. Fragrance-free formulas and those that are free of ingredients like phthalates and parabens will also reduce your exposure to formulas that might irritate your skin. Be sure to reapply if you are outside for a long period of time!Try: Medicalia Sunscreen SPF 40 with Blue Light Shield.“Love this product it gives all day sun protection doesn’t mark clothing and gives my skin a healthy glow I’m hooked!” Jan C Exfoliate skin but don’t over-exfoliate! Exfoliation is essential, even for those of us with sensitive skin. This is because exfoliating can promote cell regeneration, unclog pores and improve skin texture. The problem is, that exfoliation can come with risks of irritation, inflammation and dryness, so it is essential to choose the right exfoliators! Then there is also the issue of over-exfoliation, which can strip the skin's natural barrier leading to increased sensitivity. So if you have sensitive skin, start by limiting its use to only once a week and use a gentle exfoliator with mild exfoliating agents like fruit acids or enzymes. For more on exfoliation and sensitive skin and what to do click here. Stay consistent And finally, consistency is key when it comes to caring for your sensitive skin. Once you’ve found what works, stick to it and daily.Aside from your skincare routine, there are also other things you can do to help calm your sensitive skin. Stress less, sleep more and watch what you eat. Certain foods and drinks can contribute to your skin's sensitivities. Limit spicy foods, caffeine and alcohol, and feast on a diet rich in antioxidants and omega-3 fatty acids to promote skin health from within. Makeup tips for sensitive skinNow you’ve got your skincare routine down pat, it's time to master your makeup! Check ingredients As with your skincare routine, make sure you opt for "non-comedogenic" makeup to prevent pore-clogging and potential breakouts. You’ll also want to invest in fragrance free formulas as artificial scents can be a common trigger for sensitivity. Mineral Makeup is best. Clean makeup brushes regularly We all know dirty brushes can harbour bacteria which in turn can further irritate already irritated skin! Make sure you clean your makeup brushes regularly! To learn more about how often you should clean and replace your makeup brushes click here. Less is more Yes, we want to conceal sensitive skin whether it be facial redness or unwanted blemishes, but just remember less is always more!Simply minimise the number of makeup layers you apply to your face to reduce the risk of irritation and if you’re suffering from facial redness, try using a multi-tasking CC cream.Unlike tinted moisturisers, foundations and even BB Creams, these miracle formulas are colour correcting. So instead of applying a thick layer of opaque makeup to cover the redness, the CC Cream’s Photonic Crystal Technology “offsets” redness, wrinkles and other skin imperfections, subtly illuminating the skin. This means less coverage is required if any at all. In fact, men can and do use CC Creams to even out their skin tone as it doesn’t look like makeup.Try: ELES Luminous CC Cream 20, you’ll be so glad you did!“I’m loving my new CC Cream! I was recommended it by a friend as I suffer from facial redness and sensitive skin and this product does an amazing job at colour correcting so the redness is beautifully concealed but my skin feels calm with a nice natural glow at the same time. Would highly recommend it.” Sarah MIf colour correction isn’t something you need make sure you go for a breathable, lightweight liquid formula.Try; best-selling ELES Liquid Powder Mineral Foundation. It’s silky, mineral-enriched and provides skin with broad spectrum sun protection. Its liquid formulation glides beautifully onto sensitive skin setting as a soft, powder finish, however it does not clog skin! Brilliant stuff. “The ELES liquid to powder is PHENOMENAL. I will never try another foundation. The foundation smooths over your skin so easily, providing good medium coverage, evening out skin tone, its completely non-irritating, and doesn't clog my skin.” Lucy G Patch test It’s always a good idea to patch test any new makeup products when it comes to sensitive or reactive skin, before applying all over your face! Remove makeup before bed And finally, always remember to remove your makeup before bed no matter how lazy you might be feeling! Use a gentle, fragrance-free makeup remover or micellar water. Nighttime is when your skin goes into repair mode, so it needs to be free of any pore clogging dirt and grime!

The best makeup tips for sensitive skin

by Jo Boyden on Oct 12 2023
If you suffer from sensitive skin, you’ll know that makeup can be somewhat of a challenge! After all you don’t want to spend your hard-earned dollars purchasing products that are only going to exacerbate your already compromised complexion!Unfortunately when it comes to sensitive skin, choosing the right makeup products for your skin’s specific needs, as well as adopting gentle preparation and application techniques, are imperative! To help guide you, below we reveal the top 9 makeup tips for sensitive skin sufferers and the best makeup products for you to try too! Products that will both help conceal and sooth your sensitive skin without any irritation. Sound good? Keep reading! Understand your skin Before you even consider your makeup, you need to really understand your skin. As well as being sensitive, is it dry? Oily? Combination perhaps? Do you have any specific skin conditions like rosacea or eczema? Are their certain ingredients that cause your skin to flair up? Understanding your skins unique needs will help you choose the right products. Check ingredients When selecting makeup products for sensitive skin, read labels carefully. You want to avoid highly fragranced products which are very likely to cause a negative reaction with sensitive skin. Also avoid, drying alcohols, witch hazel, citrus and products that contain a high % of essential oils. Another problem can be preservatives, particularly methylisothiazolinone and methylcholorisothiazoline which are often used to replace parabens, these are known sensitisers when used in leave on products.Instead look for terms like “fragrance-free” and “hypoallergenic”. This means that the makeup has been tested and proven to be less likely to cause irritation. Also check the label for ”non-comedogenic”. Non-comedogenic makeup is less likely to clog your pores, which can lead to breakouts.Mineral makeup will be your because bet, because its fragrance-free, hypoallergic and non-comedogenic and it tends to be packed with soothing, skin loving ingredients instead of ingredients that can cause irritation. Choose the right shade When it comes to choosing colours avoid products that are too yellow. Red skin and yellow makeup = orange complexion. Neutral shades are best for you and will help reduce the redness harmoniously. Patch test your products Before applying any new product to your face we recommend patch testing first to check for any allergic reactions or irritation. Either apply the product on an area like the back of your wrist or by apply a very small amount to your jawline. Make sure your skin is properly prepped Before diving into makeup, it’s imperative to start with a clean canvas. Use a gentle, sensitive skin cleanser to remove any impurities. Next, it’s time to moisturise. Sensitive skin can be on the dry side too, so it’s important to add nourishment. Opt for a moisturiser specifically designed to sooth and hydrate sensitive skin, this will lock in hydration and create a smooth base for the makeup to follow! We are loving Phytomer's Douceur Marine Soothing Moisturising Cream. It is beautifully silky in texture, soothing on the skin and visibly reduces skin redness. What’s more, its deeply hydrating without feeling greasy or heavy.Take only the size of a pea and pat the product into the skin to allow it to absorb slowly and naturally. You should also add a sunscreen with high SPF for a layer of added protection, this will help prevent sun damage and premature skin ageing like fines lines and wrinkles. We recommend: ELES Luminous Defence Brightening Day Protection 50 It’s time to prime All hail the makeup primer! This product will really be your best friend. A makeup primer will not only help create longer lasting makeup, but it will create a barrier between your skin and makeup reducing the risk of irritation too! Choose a gentle formula. We love ELES Retexturizing Face PrimerTo learn more about primers and just how good they are click here. Go light If you use foundation, go for a breathable, lightweight liquid formula. We love the best-selling ELES Liquid Powder Mineral Foundation. It's silky, mineral-enriched and provides skin with broad spectrum sun protection. It liquid formulated glides beautifully onto sensitive skin setting as a soft, powder finish, however it does not clog skin! Brilliant stuff.Another option is to look for multi-tasking products that treat, conceal and even tone in one. A tall ask? Not when it comes to CC Creams! These miracle formulas are colour correcting. So instead of applying a thick layer of opaque makeup to cover redness, the CC Cream’s Photonic Crystal Technology “offsets” redness, wrinkles and other skin imperfections, subtly illuminating the skin. This means less coverage is required, better for your sensitive skin! Try: ELES Luminous CC Cream 20, you’ll be so glad you did!To add colour or depth to your skin, you can incorporate a blush or bronzer too. You’re best to just choose mineral formulations once again, but make sure you choose powder over cream base. Cream-based products can sometimes clog pores or cause unnecessary irritation. Less is always more It's better to start with a light layer of makeup and build up coverage as needed than to apply too much makeup at once. Too much makeup can irritate sensitive skin and clog your pores. Remove your makeup at the end of the day. It's imperative to remove any makeup from your skin at the end of the day. Leaving impurities in the skin while you sleep will lead to more sensitivity! Allow your skin to perform its natural repair and regeneration at night by removing all your makeup and the day’s pollutants and you’ll wake up to a much calmer skin. While it may be tempting to coat your skin in rich and protective creams and oils, it’s better to drench it with lightweight moisture that will encourage better cell regeneration and protein rebuilding. We adore Phytomer's Night Recharge Youth Enhancing Cream. Perfectly silky and soothing it literally envelopes your skin in nourishment and comfort and helps boost your skin's renewal as you sleep so you’ll wake up to calmer, plumper skin by morning. Obsessed.

Try meditation, yoga or simply taking time out for yourself to relax and unwind whether that’s going for walks, reading a book or simply having time out in from of the tv. I highly recommend the app Headspace for meditation. And for some soothing sounds try ambient relaxation music on Spotify. Bliss. Choose your skincare products wisely Check the ingredients list of the skincare products you purchase. You want to steer clear of products containing alcohol or fragrances which can exacerbate redness and instead opt for products specifically targeted for sensitive skin which include soothing ingredients such as aloe vera, chamomile, green tea or niacinamide. These can help cool and calm any inflammation as well as reduce your facial redness. Consider topical creams If you know that the redness on your skin is caused by rosacea, you can also look to certain skincare ranges to treat your symptoms.Try: Pevonia’s best-selling RS2 line. It can help soothe the skin as well as successfully elevating the symptoms. Revise your diet Underlying facial redness can actually be related to what you eat so making simple changes to your diet can make all the difference. We recommend an anti-inflammatory diet, which includes green leafy vegetables, fish, essential oils, and low-glycemic fruits. Try to give simple sugars, grains, non-organic meats, dairy, and high-glycemic fruits a miss..and avoid triggers such as spicy foods, citrus, tomato, chocolate, and cinnamon. Make lifestyle changes While facial redness can be a frustrating problem, the cause can often be more than skin deep. This means that the solution can require certain lifestyle changes in addition to the steps mentioned above. Try decreasing sun exposure, don’t go walking in the wind! If you smoke, don’t! Stop drinking all the hot drinks and make sure you drink cold water when ever you are exercising. Remember to be patient and consistent when managing facial redness and don't get discouraged if you don't see immediate results.

If you’re suddenly suffering from dry, irritated and sensitive skin it’s possible your skin barrier could be compromised. Fear not though, a damaged skin barrier can happen to the best of us, even devout skincare enthusiasts! Thankfully it’s possible to fix a damaged skin barrier – as long as you know how! Keep reading as we talk all things skin barrier, from what it is, to how to fix it and the best tips and products to use. Firstly though when exactly is your skin barrier? Our skin barrier is the outermost layer of our skin. You could call it your ‘shield’ as it literally serves as a protective barrier against the outside world! Be it environmental toxins, bacteria, and other harmful substances.Technically knows as the stratum corneum, it’s a complex system of lipids, proteins and cells which not only protects your face from external aggressors but helps retain moisture in your skin keeping it hydrated and healthy too. What causes a damaged skin barrier?Unfortunately our skin barrier can be very fragile and several factors can compromise or damage it, these include; Harsh soaps and skincare products. Using products that contain harsh chemicals can strip the skin of its natural oils and disrupt the skin barrier. Hot water Yes, something as simple as washing your face with water that is too hot can strip the skin of its natural oils leading to dryness and skin sensitivities. Sun exposure Prolonged exposure to the sun’s harmful UV rays can seriously damage the skin barrier and lead to premature ageing. Environmental pollutants Everything from air pollution and cigarette smoke to the weather and blue light from our screens can cause havoc with our skin. Genetics Some people are just more prone to skin barrier damage due to their genetics unfortunately, this doesn’t mean you are doomed, it just means you need to be more religious about looking after your skin and using specific skincare products to protect your skin barrier. Age Our ceramide levels decrease significantly as we age so our skin’s ability to hold onto moisture eventually becomes compromised too. What is the best way to repair your skin’s barrier? If your skin barrier is damaged there are several things you can do to repair it including; Use gentle cleansers Choose skincare products that are gentle and free from harsh chemicals. Look for products specifically formulated for sensitive skin. Avoid hot water Always use lukewarm water instead of hot water when washing your face. Make sure you moisturise morning and night Use a moisturiser that is specifically formulated to repair the skin barrier. Look for products rich in ceramides (an essentially fatty molecule called a lipid which holds your skin cells together, without ceramides there is nothing to keep all those hydrating ingredients from evaporating from the skin!). We love Pevonia’s best selling Age Correction Marine Collagen Cream. It rejuvenates skin cells while softening fine lines and wrinkles and replenishing vital nutrients. Avoid harsh skincare products Steer clear from products that contain alcohol, fragrances, and other harsh chemicals. Products your skin from the sun, every single day! Using a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 will not only help repair your skin but protect it too and not just from damage to your skin’s barrier but premature ageing as well. Avoid smoking Smoking can and will damage your skin’s barrier and lead to premature ageing. Use skincare products that help combat environmental damage on our skin If you live in the city, try using products that have been carefully formulated to combat environmental damage. We love Phytomer’s CityLife Collection. Eat a healthy diet A diet rich in antioxidants and healthy fats can help support the skin barrier and keep it healthy! Stay hydrated Having a damaged barrier often results in a dehydrated complexion from the skin’s deeper layers so it’s vital to replenish that lost moisture with lightweight serums formulated with hydration heroes like hyaluronic acid. Serums have the ability to penetrate deep into the skin layers, whereas moisturisers tend to hydrate the skin’s surface. We highly recommend Pevonia’s Hyaluronic Acid Hydra Serum and Hyaluronic Acid Hydra Mist for that extra boost of moisture.Drinking plenty of water daily (8 glasses is the recommended amount) is essential too! It will not only help repair damaged skin but help maintain a healthy and hydrated skin barrier once repaired too!

rosacea vs eczema

Rosacea vs eczema: What’s the difference?

by Jo Boyden on Sep 08 2022
Are you suffering from red, inflamed or itchy skin? Dry scaly patches perhaps? Or pustules even? If you answered yes to any of the above, you could be suffering from one of two inflammatory skin conditions – rosacea or eczema, but before being able to treat it, it’s important to understand which one you have! From intermittent flare-ups to skin redness and irritation, both rosacea and eczema can be easily confused, yet both disorders have a number of different triggers and therefore need to be treated in different ways. But how exactly are you supposed to diagnose which of you two you might have? We talked to Beauty Collectives’ Director of Education to find out everything there is to know about the two. What is rosacea? Rosacea is one of the most common inflammatory skin conditions which unlike eczema mostly affects the face. Rosacea typically occurs in adults over 30, and while more common in women, men who suffer from the disorder tend to experience more obvious symptoms. What are rosacea symptoms?Signs and symptoms of rosacea include facial flushing which may resemble a blush or sunburn. This can be persistent. This redness mainly occurs on the forehead, nose, cheeks and chin and tends to come and go. It can also be accompanied by a sense of heat, warmth or burning.Occasionally rosacea causes papules and pustules to appear which can be confused for acne. And for many people with rosacea, prominent small blood vessels called telangiectasia become visible on the cheeks, nasal bridge and other areas of the central face. Finally, but a much less common symptom – your skin may thicken and enlarge from excess tissue, most commonly on the nose (known as rhinophyma). What causes rosacea? While the cause of rosacea is unknown there are lifestyle and environmental factors which can affect its severity from sunlight to weather changes, alcohol, caffeine, smoking and more. How to get rid of rosacea permanentlySadly, eliminating rosacea altogether is an impossibility, but you can keep symptoms at bay, you just need to be religious about maintaining a good skincare routine using targeted rosacea treatments and by making adjustments to your lifestyle; Avoid sun exposure Unfortunately. sun exposure is the most common trigger for rosacea. While we may all love long days at the beach, if you suffer from rosacea your skin sadly will pay a price. Not only can sunburn make flare-ups even worse, the heat from the sun can also increase your body temperature which in turn dilates blood vessels and triggers inflammation. Relax more, stress less Stress and anxiety can cause rosacea symptoms to worsen, so some stress management techniques will be imperative. Make sure to get plenty of rest where you can as well as practice mindfulness, as this can really help combat the stress-inducing effects of negative thinking. There are several methods for increasing mindfulness a few of which include, mindfulness-based stress reduction, meditation, and yoga. And don’t forget to practice deep breathing when you feel anxiety creeping up. Eliminate any hot, spicy foods from your diet These are two big rosacea triggers for some, so it’s best to steer clear from things like horseradish dip and hot sauce when you’re drinking alcohol as heat dilates the blood vessels in the skin, and since hot foods generate heat, peppers are a big no-no! Reduce your alcohol consumption While you might well love that glass of wine of an evening, sadly it can trigger or potentially worsen any facial redness. Introduce skincare specifically designed to combat rosacea Look for products such as rosacea serum formulated with calming and soothing ingredients like green tea, licorice extract, chamomile extract, and French rose extract. Try Pevonia’s best-selling RS2 rosacea skincare line – a soothing, calming and irritant free collection that not only alleviates redness and discomfort but also helps create a healthy skin barrier. Never skimp on your sunscreen Despite avoiding sun exposure where feasible, it’s not possible to completely steer clear, so wearing SPF daily is a necessity. Just opt for sensitive skin formulations that won’t aggravate your rosacea.Or for the best colour correcting makeup for rosacea that’s also formulated with SPF try ELES Cosmetics Luminous CC Cream 20. Perfect for those with skin sensitivities like rosacea, it’s lightweight, oil-free, hypoallergenic and paraben free, and while it’s technically not a foundation, the full coverage pigments cover redness and other rosacea symptoms flawlessly. You can also try light and laser therapy To reduce rosacea symptoms and use both topical and oral medications from your doctor if symptoms are really aggressive. What is eczema?Otherwise known as atopic dermatitis, eczema is a very common anti-inflammatory skin disorder, more evident in young children, but also apparent in adults too. What are eczema symptoms?Eczema typically presents with a dry, cracked, red, itchy skin that may be scaly and/or bumpy. Fluid-filled blisters can also form.Eczema most often occurs on the inside of the elbows, the knees, hands, feed, upper chest, neck and sometimes on the face. What causes eczema?Eczema is caused by a combination of genetics, stress and immune system activation. When you suffer from eczema your immune system overreacts to small irritants or allergens. This overreaction can inflame your skin.Eczema can come and go but certain fabrics, soaps, and detergents as well as the environments and certain foods can really cause flare ups. Changes in weather can contribute to dry and eczema prone skin. How to get rid of eczema permanently As with rosacea, it’s not possible to totally cure eczema, but you can effectively manage symptoms by following a few essential steps; Avoid foods that can trigger eczema flare ups These include; refined carbs, processed meats, dairy, citrus fruits, peanuts and soy. Feast on vegetables and fruits that are high in inflammation-fighting flavonoid Such as spinach, kale, broccoli, apples, blueberries, bananas, oranges and cherries (when in season!) these have been found to help improve the overall health of skin and fight inflammatory skin conditions. Do not bathe in hot water Instead, just warm water only. Keep skin moisturised daily with products that will support your skin barrier function Products formulated with shea butter, lanolin, glycerin, hyaluronic acid, ceramides, fatty acids and Niacinamide are best. In some cases topical medication is paramount. See your doctor. If the condition is bad, oral and injectable options are also available Just remember maintaining a healthy skin barrier and avoiding triggers are key to managing symptoms when it comes to both rosacea and eczema.

7 reasons you are suffering from sensitive skin and how to fix it

by Jo Boyden on Sep 02 2022
Whether you’ve always been prone to sensitive skin or have suddenly started to suffer from inflammation, we feel you. Unfortunately, a number of factors can affect our skin and lead to common skin sensitivities but there are steps you can take overcome this! From the weather and our environment to the water and what we eat, read on as we count down 7 sensitive skin triggers and the best products to counteract them! Firstly, though what is sensitive skin exactly?Contrary to popular belief sensitive skin isn’t actually a skin type. Unlike dry, normal, oily and combination skin, sensitive skin is not determined by how much sebum a person's skin produces, in fact those who have dry or oily skin types can also have sensitive skin! Sensitive skin instead refers to a range of conditions, from facial redness, rashes, broken capillaries and inflammation to burning sensations, itchiness and breakouts! And yes, you might be thinking that most people are likely to have at least some sort of skin reaction in their lives whether it be to a product or ingredient for example, those with persistent issues are classified as having sensitive skin. What are the triggers for sensitive skin? and the best way to treat it? The weather Harsh weather conditions be it low temperatures, strong winds and extreme heat can strip the skin’s natural protective barrier compromising our complexion as water escapes and irritants get in! Skin can look and feel irritated from redness and itchiness to inflammation.Solution: While we can’t change the weather (although often wish we could!) you can turn down the heating in the winter and lay of the air conditioning unit in the summer. Also inflamed skin needs calming, so look for products with soothing ingredients like calendula, chamomile aloe and azulene extract.Try; Pevonia’s Sensitive Skin Line. Comprising of a cleanser, lotion, moisturiser and serum, this best-selling collection effectively controls sensitivity, soothes skin irritation and diffusing redness. Over exposure to the sun Ten minutes in the sun and before you know it you are looking and feeling somewhat flushed in the face! This is because UV rays from the sun triggers oxidative stress and inflammation in the skin.Solution: Integrate abroad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher into your daily routine (yes that’s right daily, even in winter!) Fragrance-free and natural sunscreen formulated with titanium dioxide and zinc oxide are best, oh and wear a hat too!Try: Medicalia Sunscreen SPF 40 with Blue Light Shield. A true triple threat, this smooth, tinted sunscreen contains an exclusive mineral formula including both zinc and iron oxides to shield skin from harmful sun rays, blue light AND pollution! It delivers all-natural protection with the addition of zinc oxide which acts to form a protective seal over the skin to reflect blue light away. It rubs into skin seamlessly without leaving a white cast or greasy residue behind. And even better, the formula is reef-safe and works for all skin types and tones. So worth the investment in my books! Taking hot (not warm) showers We all love a hot shower or indulgent bubble bath, especially on a cold winters night but this luxury can lead to taut, itchy, uncomfortable skin – all common signs of sensitivity.Solution: it’s simple enough switch to lukewarm water or at least turn the heat down! Always use a gentle cleanser and apply a nourishing moisturiser packed with ceramides as soon as you come out.Try Medicalia Gentle cleanser. Formulated with a unique natural blend of soothing Green Tea, Chamomile, and Oat Amino-Acids it beautifully cleanses skin both thoroughly and gently while preserving the skin barrier and reducing symptoms of inflammation! Additives in skincare and cosmetics It doesn’t matter what you seem to put on your skin, it reacts! This is because people with sensitive skin typically have a much weaker, thinner and more easily damaged skin barrier making it easier for irritants to penetrate the skin and cause unwanted inflammation!Solution: Don’t overload your skin with multiple products or use skincare with harsh ingredients. Opt for gentle and hypoallergenic formulations specifically designed to address sensitive and reactive skin and always use mineral makeup as it contains no chemical nasties and will allow skin to breath freely.Try; Phytomer Douceur Intemporelle Restorative Shield Cream. It’s an outstanding comforting cream with a beautifully light consistency which literally rescues skin by strengthening it’s protective barrier. It soothes, calms and comforts skin, conveniently remedying red patches. Alcohol You love a good glass of wine in the evening but have noticed every time you indulge you get a flush face and a rash even? This is because alcohol is a stimulant and can cause an allergic reaction in some people. The sulphites used in wine are meant to preserve it, however exposure to sulphites induce a number of adverse reactions including the majority of common skin sensitivities.Solution: Buy preservative free alcohol. Yes, it’s a thing! And for every glass of wine consumed, drink two glasses of water! Specific foods Certain food choices can sadly lead it skin inflammation. It’s best to avoid foods such as peanuts, wheat, eggs, cow's milk, soy and shellfish which are among the most common culprits. The itchiness caused by these foods and subsequent scratching can then lead to flare-ups or worsening of sensitive skin symptoms!Solution: Make sure your daily diet is rich in foods such as anti-inflammatory asparagus, red onion, tomatoes, broccoli, berries, peppers, olives oil and avocado. Pollution Every day, our skin is in contact with atmospheric pollution and more specifically ozone and PM2.5, microscopic fine particles (basically soot). These pollutants can stick to the skin, and the smallest particles may even penetrate down to the epidermal cells causing oxidative stress. The result? people with sensitive skin suffering from inflammatory skin conditions are faced with further inflammation.Solution: Use pollution proof skincare!Try: Phytomer Citadine Citylife Face & Eye Contour Sorbet Cream. A combination of three marine sugars create the active ingredient, CITYSAFE®, to depollute, cleanse and oxygenate the skin. CITYSAFE®, along with blue and red algae’s and Phytomer’s patented seawater concentrate – Oligomer®, reset skin repairing damage caused by pollution. CITYLIFE not only sweeps away toxic micro particles but provides an ultra-moisturising facial experience too!

What’s more, they also create a barrier between your skin and your makeup preventing any further irritation. We highly recommend ELES Retexture Crème Face Primer. It’s a deeply soothing liquid-cream made with Aloe Vera leaf extract, Roman Chamomile, Witch Hazel, Calendula, Mallow Flower and Centaurea Cyanus Flower extract, that smooths, soothes, hydrates, retexturizes and refines, so foundation applies effortlessly and endures impeccably for hours!
