Makeup for sensitive skin: What works and what to avoid

by Jo Boyden on Mar 20 2026
You’ve finally found a foundation that sounds perfect! The coverage is gorgeous, the finish is flawless, but minutes after first applying it, your skin is itching, burning, or turning bright red. Sound like something you’ve experienced? The truth is a lot of everyday makeup is packed with ingredients that sensitive skin simply can’t tolerate. But that doesn’t mean you have to choose between a flawless finish and a calm complexion, and it certainly doesn't mean you have to skip makeup altogether (because let’s be honest, who would want to do that!) You just need to choose formulas that actually work with your skin, not against it. Keep reading to discover the products and ingredients you need to avoid, plus how to build a makeup routine your sensitive skin will genuinely love!   Firstly, what to avoid when it comes to sensitive skin Just as important as what you use, is what to avoid! When you have sensitive skin, your makeup should essentially be an extension of your skincare. If a product is sitting on your face for 8–10 hours a day, it needs to be "breathable" and free from the common irritants that trigger irritation. Firstly, make sure you steer clear of matte, heavy and full-coverage foundations, this is because they can sit on the skin and trap heat. Any makeup that is highly fragranced or is formulated with harsh or drying formulas that disrupt the skin barrier are a no no (so make sure you check the ingredients before buying! Nothing labelled with "parfum" or "fragrance, alcohol denat, isopropyl alcohol, or ethanol, and try to avoid talc‑heavy powders as they can be drying and aggravating. You’ll also want to avoid highly pigmented eye products as they are more likely to cause stinging or redness. And finally, while I preach about SPF all the time you need to be careful what sunscreen you are putting on your skin! Chemical filters work by absorbing UV rays and turning them into heat in the skin. For someone with rosacea or heat-sensitive skin, this extra heat can trigger a massive flush! So make sure if your foundation has SPF in it, it’s of the physical (mineral) kind like Zinc Oxide or Titanium Dioxide, which sit on top of the skin and reflect heat away! Remember sensitive skin doesn’t need more, it simply needs better, more considered formulas!   What your sensitive skin needs Whether you deal with rosacea, eczema, or just general sensitivity and reactivity, you want to keep things gentle, breathable and supportive of your skin barrier. Mineral-based formulas work wonders but make sure you look for additional hydrating and soothing ingredients too, like hyaluronic acid, glycerin, squalane, green tea, calendula or allantoin.   Why mineral makeup works so well if you have sensitive skin Mineral makeup is often a game-changer for those with reactive or easily irritated skin. This is because of a number of reasons including; It’s lightweight and breathable Mineral makeup is less likely to clog pores It’s so much gentler on the skin barrier It treats skin while you wear it (yes please) Many mineral foundations are buildable without ever looking heavy And finally mineral makeup enhances the complexion without overwhelming it And also when done well, it gives that beautiful “your skin, but better” finish that so many of us are looking for!   Your sensitive skin-friendly make routine If you’re looking to simplify your routine while keeping your skin calm and comfortable, here’s an easy, go-to approach using ELES mineral makeup.   Step 1: Start with a lightweight, skin-loving base A heavy foundation is often where things go wrong for sensitive skin. You want to conceal any redness, but your full coverage foundation can exacerbate any irritation! Instead, opt for something breathable and hydrating like the ELES Mineral Glow Skin Tint SPF 15. It’s one of my personal new absolute favourites, but more so it’s perfect for sensitive skin because it provides sheer, buildable coverage, it contains mineral SPF for gentle protection, it’s enriched with hyaluronic acid and squalane for hydration and it includes calming botanicals to help soothe and support the skin! What more can you ask? Oh and it evens out the complexion to perfection while still letting your natural skin shine through, no heaviness, no irritation just a subtle flawless glow – really! Step 2: Conceal only where you need it Rather than layering foundation everywhere, use a small amount of concealer just where needed. This helps avoid overloading the skin while still giving covering any blemishes to give you a polished finish. Less really is more here. Try the ELES Adjustable Coverage Concealer. It really is a dream for sensitive skin, delivering creamy, hydrating coverage that brightens and conceals redness and blemishes without caking or creasing. Enriched with soothing, nourishing ingredients, it softens, conditions, and protects while blending seamlessly for a natural, skin‑like finish. Comfortable, buildable, and beautifully gentle.  Step 3: Make sure you add soft, natural definition Sensitive skin often looks best with soft, natural makeup rather than anything too heavy or structured. Mineral-based blushes are ideal because they sit lightly on the skin, blend seamlessly and add colour without irritation. And I know you might be thinking no to blush when you are already dealing with facial redness but a soft flush of blush in the right place (apples of cheeks) can instantly bring life back to the complexion.  Step 4: Keep powder to a minimum Setting powder is where a lot of sensitive skin routines fall apart, heavy powders can feel suffocating and trigger congestion then can also be drying. Make sure you choose the right setting powder for your skin and apply just a small amount only where needed (usually the T-zone), this will keep your skin looking fresh and avoids that dry, tight feeling. The ELES Baked Finishing Powder is feather-light and sheer, taming shine and adding a soft radiance without sitting heavily on your skin. A light dusting is all you need to set your base and keep everything in place. Step 5: Finish with a few subtle touches Keeping the overall look fresh and minimal not only suits sensitive skin it also enhances your natural features beautifully. So to complete your look add a light coat of mascara to your lashes (for sensitive eyes the ELES Sensitive Eyes Mascara is great!) if you like to use eyeshadow for colour and definition stick with mineral shadows as they are clinically formulated for the fragile eye area, hypoallergenic, and sensitivity-tested, making them suitable for even the most sensitive skin! Softly define your blows and add a light touch of lippie that won't dry out or irritate. The ELES lip range is hydrating, fragrance-free, and comes in gorgeous wearable shades. Each lipstick delivers rich colour with a comfortable, non-drying formula, and the Pucker Up Lip Gloss gives you a plumping, high-shine finish that feels as good as it looks. Voila! Remember makeup for sensitive skin isn’t about giving up on coverage, glow or a polished look, it’s about working with your skin, not against it. With gentle, mineral-based formulas, hydrating ingredients and a lighter approach to application, you can achieve a beautiful, radiant finish while keeping your skin calm and happy (no burn, itch or redness flare-up in sight!)

Is your makeup ageing you? 10 reasons to update your routine

by Jo Boyden on Mar 13 2026
I’m sure we all have our go-to makeup products. That beloved blush, the lipstick shade we’ve worn for years and of course the trusty foundation we can’t get enough of because once upon a time someone told us it made our skin look fabulous (and for a long time, it probably did!) But makeup formulations have evolved, ingredients are smarter and more importantly, our skin changes as we age. What worked beautifully at 30 can subtly start working against you at 40, 50 and beyond and by way of working against you I mean it could be adding years to your face instead of that fresh, youthful glow we all so desire! The good news? You don’t need a completely new makeup bag! A few simple updates to your products and application can make a surprisingly big difference. Keep reading for 8 signs your makeup might be ageing you and the simple changes that can instantly refresh your look!   1. You’re skipping on skin prep Makeup can only sit as well as the skin underneath! That’s why prepping your skin before applying makeup is essential.  Dehydrated, rough, or sensitised skin can make even expensive products look patchy, heavy or uneven! Commit to a simple, consistent skincare routine with gentle cleansing, hydrating serums and barrier-supporting moisture. Exfoliating a few times a week is a good way to keep texture smooth and consider using a good primer. Primers hydrate and smooth texture, preventing foundation from settling into fine lines and keeping your youthful, dewy glow locked in all day. 2. Your foundation is too heavy Full-coverage foundations were once the go-to for creating a flawless finish. But heavier formulas can sometimes sit on top of the skin, emphasising texture, fine lines and enlarged pores. Instead, consider switching to lighter, more flexible formulas like skin tints, hydrating foundations or serum bases. These allow your natural skin to show through while still evening out tone and softening imperfections.  3. You’re overloading on foundation powder If you’re not one for liquid or stick foundations you’ve probably been using your faithful powder compact for a while. Face powder, when used correctly and frugally can be a fantastic makeup staple (I have been I’m in love with the ELES Mineral Powder Foundation for years!) however, no matter your skin type, too much face powder can actually age you! That’s right, it can highlight fine lines and wrinkles instead of helping to conceal them! Now I’m not saying you have to totally forgo your trusty powder foundation compact, but it’s best to use powder sparingly (on your t-zone, or for quick touch-up’s), or better still make sure you opt for a mineral powder! it offers lightweight, breathable coverage that does not settle into fine lines or wrinkles (avoiding that cakey, ageing appearance) instead it provides a soft-focus, radiant finish that blurs imperfections, while its non-comedogenic formula won't irritate skin that becomes more sensitive with age. 4. You’re using the wrong tone of foundation Many foundations come in both warm and cool tones but remember for many of us cool tones can exacerbate signs of age! This is because they often have blue, pink, or ashy undertones, which can accentuate fine lines, wrinkles, and uneven skin texture. As skin ages, it tends to lose its natural warmth and radiance, so using a foundation with cool tones can make the complexion appear dull, flat, or even greyish too! Which in turn can also highlight dark circles or any sallowness in the skin. All you need to do is check the colour of your foundation and try to find one with a warmer tone that matches your complexion. This will help counteract complexion pinkness that comes with thinning of the skin and exposure of fine capillaries. Warmer tones also conceal shadows better which means you need less concealer.   5. Using the wrong concealer or concealer shade As we mature and our face loses its youthful “plumpness”, shadow start to really appear under our eyes, around the nose, and at the corners of our mouth. It’s tempting to reach for a heavy duty, ultra-light shade concealer to hide these dark areas. The problem is that they can make the dark shadows look grey as opposed to concealing them or worse still settle into fine lines, especially under the eyes, accentuating them! Instead look for peachy toned, lightweight concealers that won’t cake on the skin and counteract the blue in the shadows. We recommend ELES Dual Action Concealer, it acts like 8 hours of sleep in a tube! We love it! 6. Your eyebrows are too harsh Brows have the ability to frame our eyes and lift our face! But overly dark or sharply defined brows can look heavy and ageing! (what were we thinking in the 80’s when we over-tweezed only to find that our brows never grew back!) Simply make sure you are using a softer brow pencil (taupe colour brow products can be better instead of warm browns) and use lighter strokes to create the illusion of real hair. The goal is to create natural looking thicker brows (like the ones we used to have!) Just be sure you don’t overfill the front part of your brow though! This area should have soft hair that graduates into more density. We recommend using the ELES Precision Brow Pencil. The soft, fine pencil allows you to perfectly line and fill your brows and the formula lasts for us to 10 hours! It’s amazing. 7. Your blush is pulling your face down Placing blush too low on the cheeks can drag your face down visually and emphasise loss of volume! Eek. If you are guilty of this just make sure you apply blush slightly higher on the cheek, blending upwards towards the temples for lift. Also choose cream or baked blushes as power blush can be too heavy and opt for shades like soft peaches, rose or coral over the brown hues. Remember well-placed colour can instantly make the face look more lifted and alive!   8. Your eye makeup is all wrong Solid black liner all the way around the eyes, thick lower-lash liner, or very shimmery shadow in the crease can make eyes look smaller, more tired and older. I love a good eyeliner so I’m not saying don’t use it! But consider swapping your black liner for deep brown, plum or charcoal for softer definition. Focus your liner on the upper lash line, with a subtle flick for lift (it really does work!) try using a waterliner and apply to the inner rim of your lower lash line. By doing so it’ll immediately open up your eyes as well as make the whites of your eyes look whiter. It works a treat! And use mostly matte or satin shadows for structure (in neutral shades), keeping shimmer purely to the lid or inner corner. Remember you want to frame the eyes, not close them in. If you have hooded or droopy eyes here are some top tips to improve them naturally. 9. You are continuing to use that cold frosted lipstick you love As we age, similar to our skin, our lips start to lose volume and in turn fine lines start to form! Unfortunately, that frosted lip colour that we once loved (and looked good) no longer does! This is because frosted lip colours enhance these lines making your lips age you even more! Instead of that frosted favourite, opt for a cream or satin lipstick that will make your lips look fuller and smoother. Many of these contain moisturising molecules that plump the lips and keep them hydrated longer. 10. Going to bed with makeup on Well here's one you've heard many a time before! Right? From a few too many wines to being just plain old exhausted, sometimes it hard to peel yourself off your bed to go and remove your makeup but remove your makeup you must! Cleansing your face especially at night to remove not only your makeup but any remnants of the days sweat, dirt and grime is imperative for healthy skin. Not removing your makeup means your skin is unable to regenerate effectively while you sleep, pores clog, blemishes form and fatigue (ageing!) signs start to appear. Makeup can also trap dirt and pollution, which leads to oxidative stress damaging your skin and breaking down collagen, the protein that keeps your skin firm and smooth! So, no matter how tired you are, make cleansing a non-negotiable part of your nighttime routine. Use a gentle cleanser or micellar water to remove makeup and grime, giving your skin a chance to breathe and repair while you sleep. For a fantastic makeup remover which effectively melts away makeup and grime with minimum effort try Phytomer's Doux Contour Eye and Lip Waterproof Makeup Remover. Combining the effectiveness of an oil (a trio of oils in fact) and the gentleness of a lotion, this ultra-hydrating makeup remover, eradicates even the most stubborn of lips and eye makeup fast! To read more about sleeping in makeup and what it really does to our skin click here.       Remember makeup shouldn’t mask your skin, it should enhance it! And today’s best formulas focus on hydration, light-reflecting textures and breathable coverage that move naturally with the skin. When your makeup routine evolves with your complexion, the result is skin that looks fresh, radiant and beautifully effortless! So if your makeup suddenly feels like it isn’t working quite the way it used to, don’t panic. It may simply be time for a few small updates.
Summer proof beauty: 10 makeup tips for makeup that lasts

Summer proof beauty: 10 makeup tips for makeup that lasts

by Jo Boyden on Dec 12 2025
Summer is well and truly under way with the hot weather we’ve had of late!  But hot, humid days don’t have to mean compromised makeup! With the right prep, formulas, and application techniques, you can create makeup that stays polished and in place! no matter how high the temperature gets! From long-wear bases to humidity-resistant hacks, these 10 pro-approved makeup tips will keep your summer makeup looking seamless all day long!   Tip 1. Start with a super clean canvas Makeup lasts longer on skin that’s clean, balanced, and free from excess oil.Use a gentle, non-stripping cleanser each morning to remove overnight sebum and prep your skin for smooth application. Tip 2. Change to moisturisers that suit the warmer weather Heavy creams and rich oils can make makeup slip faster in warm weather. So as much as you might love your trusty moisturiser it’s time to switch to lighter, gel or lotion textures that hydrate without leaving a greasy film. Focus on non-comedogenic formulas so your base sits smoothly and holds up better as the day goes on. Tip 3. Always let your skincare fully absorb Rushing from moisturiser straight to foundation is a recipe for slipping and pilling! While I know so many of us are time poor, if you want to prevent your makeup sliding off your face by mid-morning you need to give your skincare a couple of minutes to sink in before applying your makeup. This creates a more even canvas and helps your base adhere instead of sliding around on top. Tip 4. Use a primer Primer is your summer secret weapon I’m telling you! especially if you have oily or combination skin you’ll benefit from a mattifying or pore-perfecting formula, while normal to dry skin often prefers a hydrating but slightly tacky primer that grips makeup. Apply a thin layer where you get most shiny, then press foundation on top rather than rubbing. Tip 5. Choose long-wear and transfer-resistant formulas In hot weather, longevity matters more than full coverage. Look for long-wear or transfer-resistant foundations, tinted serums or tinted moisturisers that set down but still feel breathable. Waterproof mascaras, long-lasting brow products and budge-proof gel eyeliners also make a big difference in humidity! Tip 6. Apply thin layers and build slowly Thick layers of base are the first to crack, crease and melt. Instead, use sheer layers and build only where needed (around the nose, chin or blemishes). A light layer of a long-lasting formula wears far better than a heavy layer of anything, especially in the heat. Tip 7. Set strategically with powder You don’t need to mattify your entire face. Use a finely milled, translucent powder just on the areas prone to shine, typically the forehead, sides of the nose and chin. Press it in with a sponge or small brush rather than dusting; this helps lock products in without looking flat or cakey. Tip 8. Set with a long-lasting setting spray A good setting spray can act like a soft “seal” for your makeup. Mist your face after finishing your routine, and for extra staying power, lightly spray your sponge or brush before tapping on foundation or concealer. This helps fuse the layers together and improves longevity. Tip 9. Blot skin! Don’t pile on more product When shine appears, reach for blotting papers or a clean tissue to gently lift excess oil before adding any powder. Adding layer after layer of product over sweat and oil can lead to caking and separation. Blot first, then, if needed, tap a small amount of powder just where you need it. Tip 10. Choose lip and eye products that can take the heat Glosses and creamy liners can smear quickly in warm weather. Opt for long-wear lip pencils (gel is best), that fade more gracefully, and go for waterproof or smudge-resistant liners and mascaras.  Bonus tip from the pros Before applying primer or foundation, lightly spritz your makeup sponge or a clean, flat foundation brush with a cooling mist or place it in the fridge for a few minutes. Applying your base with a cold tool helps to temporarily constrict pores and calm the skin, which improves the longevity and seamless blend of your foundation.   So there you have it! summer makeup doesn’t have to melt! With the right prep, the right formulas, and these heat-proof tips, you can enjoy flawless, glowing, stay-all-day beauty no matter what!

The right one, however, works like a secret filter, enhancing your features with a soft, flattering radiance and that’s exactly what the ELES Satin Illuminator does! Think of it as your personal glow enhancer that complements your skin tone and texture. Brow bones Highlighting here opens up the eyes and adds a polished finish. Eyes Dab a touch onto the inner corners of your eyes for an instant pick-me-up. Cupid’s bow A touch on your upper lip instantly brightens your smile. Bridge of the nose Only a delicate swipe is needed to create definition without looking harsh. Body Dust across shoulders or collarbones for an all-over radiance that works for special occasions.   Top Tip: The magic of a subtle glow lies in moderation. Start with a small amount and blend, blend, blend. Let’s face it, life’s busy and mornings can be hectic (that’s every day in my house!) which means the luxury of spending ample time in front of the mirror to master your makeup daily is likely non-existent! Between hitting snooze one too many times and juggling the morning chaos, it can be a miracle to leave the house looking like we didn’t just roll out of bed! The good news? I’m here to tell you that with just 5 or 6 key products and a few simple steps, you can actually master a polished, fresh-faced glow in just minutes! Sound good? Keep reading for the easy to follow 5-minute makeup routine us busy mums at BC love and use every day!   What you’ll need; Tinted Moisturiser, BB Cream, or Lightweight Foundation (with SPF if possible!) Concealer (for under eyes and any blemishes) Brow Gel or Pencil Mascara Baked or Cream Blush Lip Gloss Beauty sponge (optional)   Step 1: Prep your skin (1 minute) Make sure you start with a clean, moisturised face (a hydrating night cream or face oil applied the night before helps cut time here!) Use a lightweight moisturiser or a hydrating primer to create a smooth canvas. This step helps your makeup go on evenly and last longer. Applying a sunscreen after is imperative too to protect your skin throughout the day, if your moisturiser already has SPF in it, even better! Step 2: Even out your complexion (1.5 minutes) Skip heavy foundations and instead opt for a tinted moisturiser, BB cream or light powder for quick coverage. Apply it with your fingers or a damp beauty sponge for a natural finish. Focus on areas that need coverage, like redness or uneven tone, and blend well for a seamless look. If you want, add a quick dusting of translucent powder on your T-zone to control shine. Step 3: Add a touch of colour (30 seconds) Now apply a sweep of blush across your cheeks for a fresh, youthful glow. Cream formulas are perfect for quick application and blend easily with your fingers. Choose a shade that complements your skin tone for a natural flush. Step 4: Conceal and brighten (45 seconds) Gently apply a lightweight concealer under your eyes, around your nose, and on any blemishes, gently tapping it in with your ring finger or a small brush. You can also use a sponge for a natural, flawless finish. Next quickly define your eyes by applying one or two coats of mascara. This step will instantly brighten your complexion and enhance and lift your lashes opening your eyes to make you look more awake! And I’m sure many of us want to do with that in the morning! Step 5: Define your brows (45 seconds) Fill in your brows lightly with a brow pencil and brush through for a natural look. I know we don’t have much time, but this step will make all the difference to your look! Defined brows will really frame your face and can make you look younger than you are!  Step 6: Finish with lips (30 seconds) To complete the look, finish with a swipe of hydrating lip balm, gloss, or your favourite lipstick. Choose a shade that enhances your natural lip colour for an effortless finish. I love using my favourite ELES Gel Lipliner in Guava! I line my lips to make them look fuller and more plumped (because let’s face it ageing definitely thins them!) and then fill lips in for colour!   Bonus tips for speedy success! Multi-tasking products will save you time! We love a good BB Cream with SPF which acts as your moisturiser, foundation and sunscreen! Use your fingers for application, they’re the quickest tools you have! Stick to cream or liquid formulas for easier blending. Organize your makeup and place in one location for grab-and-go mornings. Good luck!

We all know ageing is inevitable and just as we need to adjust our skincare as we age, it’s important to update our makeup too! What worked in our 20’s and 30’s might not be as flattering in our 40s and beyond especially since our skin loses elasticity, moisture and radiance so the full coverage foundation you once loved could well be ageing you now! The good news? A few adjustments like choosing a lightweight, hydrating foundation and finding the perfect lip colour can make all the difference. Keep reading for 10 expert tips and makeup products to keep your skin looking fresh, radiant and youthful!     1. Always moisturise your skin before applying your base Healthy skin is the foundation of great makeup, and this means making sure you have your skincare routine down pat! As we age our skin can become thinner and drier so it’s essential that after cleansing you hydrate your skin with a good quality serum and nourishing moisturiser preferably rich in anti-ageing and moisturising ingredients including hyaluronic acid, squalane, glycerin and ceramides. It’ll be next to impossible to create that perfect canvas for your foundation without moisturising first! Exfoliating regularly can also help create a smooth, even surface for flawless makeup application since it removes dead skin cells and unclogs pores.   2. Introduce a primer if you haven’t already Creating an extra layer between your skin and makeup, face primers are used to plump fine lines, blur imperfections and blemishes, smooth skin, and help makeup last all day without caking, creasing or the need for constant touch-ups. They really are key to achieving smooth, flawless skin that’s perfectly prepped for your foundation! A primer can also help prep your eyelids preventing eye makeup from creasing, feathering, smudging or smearing! Look for a silicone-based primer that offers a smoothing effect without clogging pores. Apply it evenly to your face after moisturising, focusing on areas prone to fine lines, such as around the eyes and mouth. We LOVE ELES’s range of face primers. For mature skin the BC Pros highly recommend ELES Retexture Crème Face Primer.   3. Don’t overload on powder foundation Unfortunately (and I am a trusty lover of power foundation for touch ups myself!) powder foundation can actually age you! It can highlight fine lines and wrinkles instead of helping to conceal them! But I’m not saying you need to forgo your trusty powder, but instead make sure you opt for a light weight mineral power and use it a little more sparingly – on your t-zone or for touch-ups.   I personally can’t recommend enough the ELES Mineral Powder Foundation. I have been using it for 15 years. 4. Opt for lightweight, hydrating foundations You might well love the matte foundation you have been using for years but it’s time to change it up when we hit 40 and beyond. Unfortunately, heavier foundations can settle into those pesky fine lines and wrinkles which is exactly what we don’t want when doing our makeup! That’s why a lightweight, hydrating foundation is a game-changer for mature skin. It provides just the right amount of coverage without looking cakey, keeping your complexion fresh and radiant. Plus, its moisture-boosting ingredients help plump the skin, smooth out texture, and create a dewy, youthful glow. The BC Pros highly recommend both the ELES Mineral Sheer Tint (this dewy formula has been a personal favourite of mine for years) and ELES Blue Light Radiant BB Cream 30. It’s nourishing, brightening, anti-ageing (it protects against, free radicals, UVA, UVB and blue light damage!) and is packed to the brim with the best skincare ingredients including peptides, beta-carotene, amino acids, vitamin c, niacinamide, hyaluronic acid, vitamin e and vitamin c!! What’s more, it provides the perfect coverage yet you’ll feel as though you aren’t even wearing makeup!   5. Change up your concealer As we mature and our face loses its youthful “plumpness”, dark circles and shadows start to really appear under our eyes, around the nose, and at the corners of our mouth. It can be tempting to reach for a heavy duty, ultra-light shade concealer to hide these dark areas but the problem is they just make the dark shadows look grey as opposed to concealing them! Instead you’ll want to use peachy toned, lightweight concealers that won’t cake on the skin and counteract the blue in the shadows. ELES Dual Action Concealer is an excellent option. Just be sure to apply it sparingly with a small brush or your fingertips, gently blending it into the skin. Make sure you avoid any excessive tugging or pulling, as it can exacerbate the appearance of wrinkles.   6. Lift your face with blush Blush can sometimes take a back seat in a makeup routine but I’m telling you adding blush to your face can make a huge difference especially to mature, ageing skin. As skin loses collagen and elasticity, it can appear dull or sallow. A well-applied blush will add warmth, dimension, and a healthy flush (that unfortunately fades with age) instantly lifting the complexion. For the best result, opt for a creamy baked blush, as these formulas blend seamlessly and provide a youthful finish without settling into fine lines. Apply it to the apples of the cheeks and sweep slightly upwards towards the temples to create a lifted effect. Avoid placing blush too low, as this can drag the face downward. A soft, natural shade like peach, rose, or warm pink works beautifully to enhance radiance.   7. Don’t overdo your brows Sparse brows can age the face and let’s face it (pardon the pun!), they only get thinner and lose their definition the older we get! It’s important to shape and fill in brows using a soft pencil or powder to create a fuller, natural-looking shape that frames the face beautifully. Just make sure you avoid overly harsh lines at all costs and brush your brows upwards to create a lifted appearance. Try Brow Sculpt. A two-in-one sculpting product. Long wearing powder helps to fill in, shape and thicken brows while the colour coordinated tinted wax tames and sets the brows. Apply with a dual ended brow brush.   8. Define, don’t overdraw when it comes to your eyes If you use eyeliner, as many of us do, you’ll want to trade your harsh black eyeliner for a softer approach. Use brown or grey liners for a more natural look that defines without weighing down your eyes. And make sure you use a good mascara to add volume to lashes (especially since the older we get the thinner and shorter our lashes become!) Curling your lashes can work wonders too but be careful how you do so! For more information on the best mascara, mascara hacks and eye lash tips for mature women click here.   9. Avoid matte lipsticks and use lipliner As we age our lips lose their colour and get thinner and drier too! so you’ll want to steer clear of matte lipsticks that can dry out ips and accentuate fine lines and wrinkles, and instead be armed with a good hydrating and volumizing lip product like tinted balms or hydrating lipsticks such as the highly recommended ELES Velvet Satin Lipstick to keep lips smooth and plump. Choose colours that flatter your complexion too and don’t go for anything too dark that can make lips look smaller than they are. You can also create the illusion of plumped lips with lipliner! A lipliner will define your lips and prevent feathering. For more on how to apply lip liner for fuller looking lips click here.   10. Set your makeup with a finishing powder A light dusting of translucent powder, finishing powder or even facial mist will set your makeup, preventing it from settling into fine lines. Remember, less is more in the powder department.   Makeup in your 40’s and beyond is all about working with your skin, not against it. As our complexion changes, so should our approach to beauty.
10 Makeup tips to beat the heat

10 Makeup tips to beat the heat

by Jo Boyden on Dec 05 2024
Summer is finally here! and if you’re anything like me you’ll be loving the longer sunny days, but with sunny days comes rising temperatures and let’s face the last thing any of us want is our carefully applied makeup melting away by mid-morning! The good news is you don’t need to forgo your daily makeup routine this time of year, you might just need to tweak it since the key to staying flawless lies in the right techniques and products you’re using! Keep reading as we reveal BC expert-approved tips to keep your makeup sweat-proof, smudge-free and picture-perfect all day long…seriously.   Prep skin for long-lasting makeup! The secret to long-lasting makeup begins with your skincare routine. And yes, you might be loving the products you’ve been using for months now, but you may find they’ll start to be a little too rich for your skin as the weather heats up. In summer, it’s best to switch to lightweight, non-comedogenic moisturisers that hydrate without feeling heavy. If your skin tends to get a little oily in summer due to the humidity you can also look for mattifying or gel-based formulas to control excess oil. Also, because I don’t say it enough, do not skip on your sunscreen. You just need to opt for a broad-spectrum SPF 30+ that doesn’t feel oily and will protect your skin while acting as a barrier under your makeup. Try: Medicalia Sunscreen SPF 40 with Blue Light Shield The one and only reason why so many people are reluctant to use sunscreen (despite knowing how important it is) is because they can’t stand the oily slick on their skin or the obvious sunscreen smell. Well with this outstanding tinted formulation there is no thick white paste, oily residue or unruly smell in sight! It feels like a lightweight moisturiser, smells divine, is loaded with anti-ageing goodies and it won’t cause itchiness thanks to its mineral formulation including both zinc and iron oxides. Very slightly tinted (though most of the tint disappears once it’s absorbed) it leaves your skin looking smoother and calmer. Oh and it protects skin against not only UVA and UVB rays (yes it provides skin with broad spectrum protection) but pollution and blue light damage omitted from our screens too! What’s more the formula is reef-safe and works for all skin types and tones too! Its outstanding!   Prime for perfection Primer is your best friend in hot weather. Trust me. People often forget to prime their skin but I’m here to tell you a good primer not only creates a beautifully smooth base for your makeup, helping it to stay put all day long, but it can also enhance the pigmentation of your makeup while targeting specific skin concerns! Be sure to choose a mattifying primer for oily skin or a hydrating primer if your skin tends to feel dehydrated and dry in the heat and simply apply it after you’ve cleansed and moisturised your skin and prior to your foundation and you’ll be good to go all day long! Try: ELES Pore Perfecting Face Primer This primer is our go-to! Not only does it keep makeup in place it also combats shine, absorbs excess oil and also reduces the appearance of pores to keep your foundation looking flawless! Genius!   Choose lightweight formulas when it comes to your foundation You might love your full coverage foundation, but sadly heavy foundations and heat don’t mix well. We recommend swapping your full-coverage foundation for a lightweight alternative like a tinted moisturizer, BB cream, or if matte is your formula opt for a breathable matte foundation, mineral is best. All these products will even out your skin tone without clogging pores or feeling cakey. Try: Mineral Sheer Tint For warm summer days, or those days when you want a no-makeup makeup look or don’t feel like wearing much makeup at all, this sheer tint is a winner. It offers a light, breathable coverage while providing sun protection. The mineral-based formula is gentle on the skin, making it perfect for everyday wear. Try: ELES Liquid Powder Mineral Foundation For a beautifully flawless, matte finish, this best-selling breathable mineral foundation should be your go-to! It starts as a liquid and transforms into a velvety powder finish, providing the perfect balance between coverage and lightweight wear. It's enriched with vitamins A, C and E, making it ideal for those who want a foundation that cares for their skin and provide antioxidant, UVA and UVB protection. N.B If you need extra coverage because you’re concerned about blemishes, use a spot concealer only where necessary. Opt for creamy-based products Matte powder products can sometimes cake and settle into fine lines in humid conditions. Instead, go for cream-based or baked blushes, bronzers, and highlighters. These formulas blend seamlessly into the skin and give you a natural, dewy glow that lasts. Try: ELES Baked Blush, Bronzer and Finishing Powders This trio will highlight and contour while adding instant radiance to the face with soft, highly pigmentated creamy textured formulas.   Lock in your look While cream products are ideal for a natural look, a touch of translucent setting powder is key to locking your makeup base in place. Focus on oil-prone areas like your T-zone to prevent shine without over-powdering your face. Try: Try ELES HD Translucent Powder This loose setting powder doubles as a photo filter, blurring the appearance of pores, uneven texture and imperfections for an air-brushed, soft-focus effect on the skin. It provides sheer, natural coverage without any “caking” to lock in your look, plus it reduces the appearance of shine too thanks to its formulation of 100% mineral silica powder, perfect for absorbing that unwanted excess oil! And that’s not all! Using silica topically will also improve skin’s elasticity, texture and hydration, reducing visible signs of ageing over time. Oh, and it’s vegan, gluten free, paraben free, sulphate free and talc free! Win, win, win in our books!   Waterproof is the only way to go Waterproof and smudge-proof formulas are essential for summer, after all no one likes to look in the mirror at the end of the day and be confronted by horrendous panda eyes! From mascara and eyeliner to brow gels, these products resist sweat and humidity, ensuring your features stay defined all day! For mascara try: ELES Lash Fortify Waterproof Mascara The ergonomic brush and fortifying formula coats lashes to quickly lengthen, curl, volumize and lock them into place for all day wear. The result is instantly impressive eyes with lashes that are lusciously conditioned and protected all day long! For eyeliner try: ELES Superwear Gel Liner This eyeliner is not only super smooth to apply thanks to its moisturising and hydrating ingredients, but it’s also a long-wearing liner with intense colour pay-off! For eyebrow pencil try: ELES Precision Brow Pencil It’s easy to blend formula last for up to 10 hours and creates polished, better defined and filled in brows!   Use Setting Spray A good setting spray is like an invisible shield for your makeup. Choose one with hydrating properties and spritz it over your finished look to keep everything in place—even through sweat and heat. Try: Pevonia Hyaluronic Acid Hydra Mist This beautifully nourishing spray is a multi-tasking wonder, not only rehydrating skin with a burst of hyaluronic but also doubling up as a setting spray to keep makeup at bay all day long.   Embrace minimalism As much as many of us might like a full makeup look, it’s important to remember that less is more when it comes to summer.   Keep blotting papers or a powder compact handy Even with the best products, a little shine might break through. You can either keep blotting papers in your bag or use a mineral pressed power company to quickly absorb oil without disturbing your overall makeup look. They’re both a lifesaver for touch-ups throughout the day. Try: ELES Mineral Powder Foundation It’s the perfect product for any touch-ups, as well as eliminating shine I tell you! Unlike other heavier powders which can clog pores and in turn, lead to excess oil production (no thanks!) the ELES Mineral Powder Foundation is a translucent formula which not only looks beautifully natural but allows the skin to breathe freely too. The particles in the powder tend to absorb moisture, preventing shine and what’s more, it’s formulated with skin loving ingredients including vitamins A & E, so it’ll provide antioxidant protection as well as condition skin!   Cool down your makeup tools Pop your beauty blender or makeup brushes in the fridge for a few minutes before use. Applying makeup with cool tools can help reduce redness and make your application feel refreshing!   Beating the heat doesn’t mean sacrificing your beauty routine. By choosing the right products and techniques, you can stay radiant and melt-proof no matter how hot it gets. Experiment with these tips to find what works best for you, and enjoy a flawless, summer-ready look all season long.
The secret to a flawless finish: Must-have beauty products

The secret to a flawless finish: Must-have beauty products

by Jo Boyden on Aug 16 2024
I’m sure I’m right in saying we’d all love to achieve that coveted flawless finish - a smooth, even complexion that looks naturally radiant and free of imperfections! While achieving perfection might seem like the impossible for some, I’m here to tell you that with the right products and techniques, you can definitely get pretty darn close! Keep reading as we reveal the beauty products you need to help you achieve a truly flawless finish. Start with a good skincare routine Before you even think about makeup, lets talk skincare! To achieve a flawless finish you need to get your skincare routine down pat as no makeup, no matter how good it is, will apply smoothy without going onto healthy, hydrated skin! Cleanser First things first, you need to make sure your skin is perfectly cleansed. A cleanser preps skin by removing dirt, oil, and impurities that can clog pores and lead to breakouts or uneven texture. Clean skin allows your makeup to adhere better and last longer, creating a smoother canvas for application. A good cleanser also balances the skin’s pH, preventing dryness or excessive oiliness that can affect your makeup applying smoothly. By starting with a clean, refreshed face, you will set the foundation for a radiant, flawless complexion. Exfoliator Your exfoliator will not only help remove dead skin cells (which if left on the surface of your skin can lead to clogged pores, dullness and rough skin texture!) but by exfoliating your skin you will enable your skincare products like your moisturiser and serum to penetrate more deeply and effectively, in turn boosting their efficacy and therefore deeply nourishing your skin, and as I said before makeup will never look and feel flawless without going onto a healthy, hydrated complexion. You don’t need to exfoliate every day though as this can lead to over-exfoliation, once or twice weekly is ideal. Moisturiser This is non-negotiable. Just be sure to choose a moisturiser suited to your skin type. For combination to oily skin you’ll want to opt for a lightweight, oil free formula. For ageing, dry and dehydrated skin a richer cream formulated with hyaluronic acid should be your go to. N.B. Applying a serum under your moisturiser for an added extra boost of nourishment can be a real game-changer when it comes to achieving that truly flawless finish. Primer When it comes to your makeup, the foundation of a flawless look starts with a good primer. A primer fills in pores, smooths fine lines and skin texture, brightens and primes skin, and preps it for makeup oh and it helps your makeup last longer too! N.B Look for one that matches your skin type—a hydrating primer for dry skin or mattifying primer for oily skin. Now it’s time for your makeup. Foundation Now, let's talk foundation. Your foundation will help even out skin tone, cover blemishes, minimise the appearance of pores and increase skins luminosity! The key though is to find a shade that matches your skin tone perfectly and a formula that suits your skin type. Matte for oily skin, dewy for dry skin. To learn more about the perfect foundation for your skin type click here. Concealer If you suffer from dark circles, are prone to redness or are currently dealing with blemishes or imperfections a concealer should be your go to for touching up your skin! Opt for one that provides full coverage without caking, blending seamlessly into your skin for a natural finish. Blush & Bronzer A blush or bronzer will really enhance your features adding to that flawless finish. They add warmth and dimension to your face. Blush gives your cheeks a healthy glow, while bronzer contours your features for a sun-kissed look. Illuminator or highlighter An illuminator be it stick, powder or cream, will create a natural highlight, and gives skin a fresh, delicate glow, perfect for a brighter appearance! Apply to cheekbones, brow bones, and cupid's bow. Setting your makeup is essential To ensure your makeup stays put all day, setting products are essential! You can opt for a translucent powder which can help control shine while setting your foundation, or simply use a setting spray to lock your makeup in place, preventing smudging and fading. The finishing touches If it’s a complete look you’re going for, you’ll want to finish off with a few other makeup essentials. Eyebrows Well-groomed eyebrows frame your face so youll want to invest in a good eyebrow product, be it a precision pencil or a brow balm. Eyeshadow Eyeshadow enhances your eyes by adding depth, dimension, and colour. It can highlight your eye shape and complement your overall look too! Choose a neutral eyeshadow palette for an everyday look. Mascara Mascara accentuates your eyes by defining, lengthening, and volumizing your lashes, making them appear fuller and more defined.  Lipstick or Lip Gloss Completing your makeup with a lipstick or lip gloss will add colour and dimension as well as a polished finish to your face. These products help define your lips, making them stand out and balancing the overall makeup. Whether you opt for a bold lipstick or a subtle gloss, both will enhance your features and tie the entire look together. Plus, they can complement your outfit, mood, or the occasion! And remember don't underestimate the power of good tools. Invest in quality makeup brushes and sponges for a smooth, streak-free application. Proper tools can make all the difference in achieving a professional finish.

Look younger with makeup 14 expert tips

Look younger with makeup: 14 expert tips

by Jo Boyden on Mar 08 2024
Who says you can't cheat a little on the ageing game with the magic of makeup? While skincare is essential for keeping skin healthy and happy, makeup can literally take years off your face in next to no time, you just need to know what and how to apply! Well we've put together our top makeup tips from the BC experts, 14 makeup tips that will have you looking younger in a matter of minutes! Keep reading as we count them down.1. Start with a nourishing base, every time. Before applying any makeup, you need to start with well-hydrated skin so don’t get lazy when it comes to your morning skincare routine. Start by making sure your face is perfectly cleansed, then apply your serum and moisturiser. If you haven’t prepped your skin before applying your foundation, chances are your skin will look and feel dry. Plus makeup tends to stick to dry areas on the skin making it appear patchy. It’ll even seep into fine lines and wrinkles accentuating them! For best results apply your moisturiser and wait five minutes for it to properly absorb in. Remember hydration really is the secret to plump, younger looking skin!2. Arm yourself with a primerPrimers are often the forgotten step when it comes to makeup application but we are here to tell you that this underrated makeup staple is a necessity, especially when it comes to looking younger with makeup! Creating an extra layer between your skin and makeup, face primers are used to plump fine lines, blur impurities and blemishes, smooth skin, and help makeup last all day without caking, creasing or the need for constant touch-ups. They really are key to achieving smooth, flawless skin that’s perfectly prepped for your foundation!Check out our favourite primers here.3. Always opt for a dewy foundationYou might be a lover of powder foundations but if you want to create a more youthful and radiant complexion you need to consider ditching the matte finish. No matter your skin type, too much face powder can actually age you! That’s right, it can highlight fine lines and wrinkles instead of helping to conceal them. Instead embrace dewy foundations, BB Creams or tinted moisturisers instead. They provide skin with natural coverage, SPF protection (which we all know is the main contributor to premature ageing) and a perfect subtle glow.If your skin tends to be on the oily side, you can still use a little powder, but remember sparingly and just on your t-zone.4. A good concealer will give you an instant eye liftConcealer really is your best friend when it comes to looking younger! Used correctly, concealer can brighten a tired complexion, cover up any blemishes, conceal dark under-eye circles and have you looking bright-eyed in seconds! To look younger, you’re best to opt for a concealer packed with amazing anti-ageing and eye nurturing ingredients like ELES Dual Action Concealer and watch those ageing dark circles, puffiness, age spots and blemishes disappear in seconds!Just be sure to choose the right shade for your skin and apply it correctly! For more on the best way to cover undereye dark circles click here.5. Lift your lashesAs we age our lashes get thinner and shorter so it's essential to add volume so they stand out! A lash lift with mascara is a powerful tool for defying the ageing process! Darkened and defined lashes open up our eyes, creating a refreshed, youthful and wide awake appearance.Curling your lashes can work wonders too but be careful how you do so! For more information on the best mascara, mascara hacks and eye lash tips for mature women click here.6. Play with eyeshadow shadesEyeshadow isn’t an essential step but by adding a touch of shimmer to your lids can enhance eyes ageing eyes. Just be sure to opt for warm, neutral eyeshadows. Soft, earthy tones can create a subtle, age-defying effect.7. Skip the heavy black eyelinerIf you use eyeliner, as many of us do, you’ll want to trade your harsh eyeliner for a softer approach. Use brown or grey liners for a more natural look that defines without weighing down your eyes.8. Brighten eyes with a waterline eyelinerInvesting in a waterline eyeliner will be a game changer for tired eyes. All you need to do is line your bottom waterline for an instantly wide-eyed effect. We promise you it’s worth the money as one swipe will truly create brighter, younger looking eyes.9. Don’t forget your browsJust as the hair on our heads can thin with age, so do our eyebrows! The thing is your brows can completely change how your face looks. Full, well-groomed brows are an instant youth-booster. If brow are thinning, fill in sparse areas with a brow pencil or powder for a lifted, more defined look. But don’t overfill the front part of your brow though! This area should have soft hair that graduates into more density. If you overfill this area you can make your eye brows look way too harsh. Read more on how to create perfect brows.10. Applying blush is a mustBelieve us when we say a sweep of blush on the apples of your cheeks adds a youthful flush. Just be sure to apply it correctly – use a blush brush and lift colour upwards towards your temple from the apple of your cheek.11. And don’t forget bronzerBronzer is your secret weapon for a youthful glow! Applied strategically, it adds warmth to your complexion, erasing signs of fatigue and dullness but instead mimicking a healthy, sun-kissed glow.Just be careful when and where you apply it as dusting copious amounts of bronzer all over our nose, chin, cheeks and forehead can play up fine lines and large pores as the powder sinks into them. The best (and the most flattering!) way is to apply your bronzer is with a bronzer brush to the perimeter of your face in the shape of a number three. Start on your forehead near your temples and loop down to the tops of your cheekbones, then curve out and around again along your jaw.12. Plump up those lipsAs we age, many of us will experience a reduction in lip volume and thinning of the lips! So you’ll need to create the illusion of plumped lips with lipliner! A lipliner will define your lips and prevent feathering. For more on how to apply lip liner for fuller looking lips click here.13. Using an illuminator can add luminosity to skin and help accentuate cheekbonesFinish your look with a subtle illuminator on the high points of your face – cheekbones, brow bones, and the tip of your nose.14. Set your makeup with a finishing powderA light dusting of translucent powder, finishing powder or even facial mist will set your makeup, preventing it from settling into fine lines. Remember, less is more in the powder department.
How to contour like a PRO: Your step by step guide

How to contour like a PRO: Your step by step guide

by Jo Boyden on Jan 04 2024
Facial contouring – we’ve likely all heard about it, after all it’s a technique that makeup artists have been using for years now! This is because contouring has the ability to totally transform your face! Adding depth and dimension to your features and bone structure like nothing else. We are talking chiselled cheekbones and sculpted jawlines! But surely this makeup technique is reserved only for professionals, right? Especially since it can look somewhat intimidating! The thing is we can all sculpt those cheekbones of ours like any seasoned artist, we just need to learn how!Keep reading for our simple step by step guide on how to contour like a pro and achieve perfectly chiselled features in under 5 minutes without the need for surgery!Step 1: Gather your toolsFirst things first, make sure you have the right tools at your disposal. You'll need a bronzer (the bronzer you use to contour should be only slightly darker than your skin tone. You can use any kind of formulation you like, though we do recommend a powder for beginners like the ELES Mineral Sheer Bronzer in Rio De Janeiro), a highlighter (the colour you choose for highlighting, should generally have a light shimmer finish, we love the ELES Stick Illuminator), tapered powder and blending brushes, a beauty blender sponge and a translucent powder.Step 2: Start with a fresh canvas Begin with a clean, moisturised face. Apply your foundation as you normally would to create an even base. Allow it to settle into your skin for a few minutes. Step 3: Identify your face shapeUnderstanding your face shape is crucial for targeted contouring. Whether you have a round, oval, square, heart, or diamond-shaped face, each requires specific contouring techniques. Identify yours to tailor your approach accordingly. The model we've chosen for this demonstration has a lovely round face, we've exaggerated the effect so you can see more clearly the placement of the product, however a lighter effect is recommended. Step 4: Define with contour shades Take your contour shade (bronzer) and using a tapered powder brush apply directly beneath the cheekbones, from the earlobes fading to the corners of the mouth. Step 5: Contour your nose (optional) If you want to refine your nose shape, use a smaller brush, like a small tapered blending brush to contour the sides.Apply a light application of your chosen bronzer directly down the outer contours of the nose and up towards the brow. Keep it subtle and build up the intensity gradually. Less is often more when it comes to nose contouring.Follow with a blended line sweeping across the eye contour crease to the outer eye and up towards the temples. Step 6: Highlight strategic areas Now it's time for your highlighter! Apply to areas you want to bring forward. This typically includes the centre of the forehead, bridge of the nose, under the eyes in an inverted triangle shape, tops of the cheekbones, and the chin.Start by taking a small amount of the ELES Stick Illuminator and apply in patting movements to the centre of the forehead above the nose and sweeping down the centre of the nose.N.B Remember the secret to a professional-looking contour is seamless blending. Use a damp blending sponge and blend in upward and outward motions to avoid harsh lines.Apply more highlighter under the eyes, to the inner cheeks beside the nose and down under the nose on the upper lip. Step 7: Add a pop of colour (optional)For an extra touch, apply a light dusting of blush to the apples of your cheeks. This adds a healthy flush and will complement your contoured features.Step 8: Set with translucent powder To lock in your hard work and prevent any smudging, set your contour with a light dusting of translucent powder. This step is especially important if you're using cream or liquid products.Voila! You’ve just contoured like a professional! Just remember practice makes perfect, so don't be discouraged if your first attempt isn't flawless. The key is to experiment and find what works for your unique features.CONTOURING GUIDE FOR DIFFERENT FACE SHAPES

Party ready makeup – get the look

by Jo Boyden on Nov 30 2023
It's that time of the year again – the silly season as we like to call it! The season of fun and festivities, and, of course, Christmas get togethers and parties! To look your best, and stand out from the crowd of course! You’ll need to nail that party ready makeup look, we are talking skin that glows and eyes that shimmer and pop. Want to achieve our go-to look? Keep reading for the ultimate step by step guide. Step 1. Pre party prepBefore we jump into creating the perfect party ready makeup look, let's talk skin prep. You’ll need to thoroughly cleanse your skin first with your choice of cleanser, next apply your much-loved moisturiser, (make sure you let it soak in) then it’s time to prime. Think of it as the canvas for your masterpiece. A smooth base will ensure your makeup lasts all day or all night long!Step 2. Apply your foundationNow it’s time for your makeup! Starting with foundation. Not sure which foundation to use. Click here for the best foundation for your skin type. For skin that glows we love the ELES Mineral Sheer Tint. Work a small amount into your fingertips to warm the product and press into the skin all over the face, keep patting and pressing until the product is evenly dispersed then lightly blend into the face with your fingers until you have an even coverage. If you are more of a matte lover though (but still want to achieve a radiant base), we highly recommend the ELES Foundation Stick or Liquid Powder Mineral Foundation.Step 3: Touch up skin where necessary with a concealerYou’ll want to use concealer to cover any blemishes or dark circles you may have. Apply a small amount to areas where needed or under eyes with fingertips or a small concealer brush gently blending. Try ELES Dual Action Concealer my personal secret weapon for concealing dark under eyes.Step 4: Set with PowderOnce you’ve finished applying your base it’s a good idea to set the products with a translucent setting powder like ELES Mineral Powder Foundation to prevent shine. Step 5: Bronzer and Blush Now it’s time for you to add some colour! We are loving the ELES Party Ready Makeup Palette! It really is perfect for creating a party ready look. It features a bronzer, blush and two shimmer eyeshadow shades.Firstly take your bronzer to add contour to your face. Using a large fluffy powder brush apply to the cheekbones, under the jawline and along the perimeter of the forehead, blend well for a natural sun kissed look. Follow with the Blush, applying it to the apples of your cheeks for that beautifully flushed finish. Step 6: Highlight For a truly lit from within look, this is a step you won't want to miss! Highlighter can also be used to accentuate and "lift" bone structure. It's amazing!Apply highlighter to the high points of your face, such as cheekbones, the bridge of your nose, and the cupid's bow. We recommend the ELES Stick Illuminator.Step 7: All about the eyesNow it’s time to accentuate those eyes. You’ll want to take the ELES Party Ready Palette again using the two shimmer shadows.Firstly apply the pinky/peach shade all over the eyelid. Next, apply the gold shade on the base of your eyelid carefully blending up towards the eye crease and below the lower lash line to create a natural smoky eye. Finish by applying a little of this shade to the inner corners of your eyes with your fingertip.Step 8: Add eyeliner for definitionEyeliner shapes and defines eyes and makes eyelashes look thicker. Take a bronze shade eye liner and apply it to the upper lash line as well as a little to your bottom waterline. This will help eyes to pop. We love ELES Superwear Gel Liner in Baroque. It is super smooth and longwearing so stays put all day long without smudging! Just what you need from an eyeliner! Step 9: Finish with lashings of mascaraAnd finally to finish off the eyes, apply several coats of Lush Mascara in Black to the top and bottom lashes. Work from the base of the lashes wiggling the wand slowly up the lashes for extra volume. Step 10: Define your browsFor some, your eyebrows can be an afterthought, but by defining and shaping them you can completely transform your face and give the appearance of an instant eye lift too! Start by brushing your eyebrows so the hairs are sitting naturally, then use a soft, waxy brow pencil like the ELES Precision Brow Pencil to shape and fill in your brows using short, hair-like strokes. Next, define and ‘lift’ brows by using a white eyeliner as a brow highlighter. Line below and above your eyebrows and smudge it out with a sponge or fingertip. You can also opt to use a highlighter if you don’t have a white liner on hand. Read more on how to create the perfect brows. Step 11: Complete the look by focusing on your lipsTo complete the look, it's time to focus on your lips. Apply lipstick to the lips with a lip brush to create definition in the outer edges, blot the lips with tissue, then reapply from the tube directly to the lips. Blot again for a soft matte finish. Use a lipstick colour of your choice, one that complements your overall look. Bold or neutral shades can work depending on your preference. You can add a little gloss too as desired. And voila! You're ready to shine!

The best makeup tips for sensitive skin

by Jo Boyden on Oct 12 2023
If you suffer from sensitive skin, you’ll know that makeup can be somewhat of a challenge! After all you don’t want to spend your hard-earned dollars purchasing products that are only going to exacerbate your already compromised complexion!Unfortunately when it comes to sensitive skin, choosing the right makeup products for your skin’s specific needs, as well as adopting gentle preparation and application techniques, are imperative! To help guide you, below we reveal the top 9 makeup tips for sensitive skin sufferers and the best makeup products for you to try too! Products that will both help conceal and sooth your sensitive skin without any irritation. Sound good? Keep reading! Understand your skin Before you even consider your makeup, you need to really understand your skin. As well as being sensitive, is it dry? Oily? Combination perhaps? Do you have any specific skin conditions like rosacea or eczema? Are their certain ingredients that cause your skin to flair up? Understanding your skins unique needs will help you choose the right products. Check ingredients When selecting makeup products for sensitive skin, read labels carefully. You want to avoid highly fragranced products which are very likely to cause a negative reaction with sensitive skin. Also avoid, drying alcohols, witch hazel, citrus and products that contain a high % of essential oils. Another problem can be preservatives, particularly methylisothiazolinone and methylcholorisothiazoline which are often used to replace parabens, these are known sensitisers when used in leave on products.Instead look for terms like “fragrance-free” and “hypoallergenic”. This means that the makeup has been tested and proven to be less likely to cause irritation. Also check the label for ”non-comedogenic”. Non-comedogenic makeup is less likely to clog your pores, which can lead to breakouts.Mineral makeup will be your because bet, because its fragrance-free, hypoallergic and non-comedogenic and it tends to be packed with soothing, skin loving ingredients instead of ingredients that can cause irritation. Choose the right shade When it comes to choosing colours avoid products that are too yellow. Red skin and yellow makeup = orange complexion. Neutral shades are best for you and will help reduce the redness harmoniously. Patch test your products Before applying any new product to your face we recommend patch testing first to check for any allergic reactions or irritation. Either apply the product on an area like the back of your wrist or by apply a very small amount to your jawline. Make sure your skin is properly prepped Before diving into makeup, it’s imperative to start with a clean canvas. Use a gentle, sensitive skin cleanser to remove any impurities. Next, it’s time to moisturise. Sensitive skin can be on the dry side too, so it’s important to add nourishment. Opt for a moisturiser specifically designed to sooth and hydrate sensitive skin, this will lock in hydration and create a smooth base for the makeup to follow! We are loving Phytomer's Douceur Marine Soothing Moisturising Cream. It is beautifully silky in texture, soothing on the skin and visibly reduces skin redness. What’s more, its deeply hydrating without feeling greasy or heavy.Take only the size of a pea and pat the product into the skin to allow it to absorb slowly and naturally. You should also add a sunscreen with high SPF for a layer of added protection, this will help prevent sun damage and premature skin ageing like fines lines and wrinkles. We recommend: ELES Luminous Defence Brightening Day Protection 50 It’s time to prime All hail the makeup primer! This product will really be your best friend. A makeup primer will not only help create longer lasting makeup, but it will create a barrier between your skin and makeup reducing the risk of irritation too! Choose a gentle formula. We love ELES Retexturizing Face PrimerTo learn more about primers and just how good they are click here. Go light If you use foundation, go for a breathable, lightweight liquid formula. We love the best-selling ELES Liquid Powder Mineral Foundation. It's silky, mineral-enriched and provides skin with broad spectrum sun protection. It liquid formulated glides beautifully onto sensitive skin setting as a soft, powder finish, however it does not clog skin! Brilliant stuff.Another option is to look for multi-tasking products that treat, conceal and even tone in one. A tall ask? Not when it comes to CC Creams! These miracle formulas are colour correcting. So instead of applying a thick layer of opaque makeup to cover redness, the CC Cream’s Photonic Crystal Technology “offsets” redness, wrinkles and other skin imperfections, subtly illuminating the skin. This means less coverage is required, better for your sensitive skin! Try: ELES Luminous CC Cream 20, you’ll be so glad you did!To add colour or depth to your skin, you can incorporate a blush or bronzer too. You’re best to just choose mineral formulations once again, but make sure you choose powder over cream base. Cream-based products can sometimes clog pores or cause unnecessary irritation. Less is always more It's better to start with a light layer of makeup and build up coverage as needed than to apply too much makeup at once. Too much makeup can irritate sensitive skin and clog your pores. Remove your makeup at the end of the day. It's imperative to remove any makeup from your skin at the end of the day. Leaving impurities in the skin while you sleep will lead to more sensitivity! Allow your skin to perform its natural repair and regeneration at night by removing all your makeup and the day’s pollutants and you’ll wake up to a much calmer skin. While it may be tempting to coat your skin in rich and protective creams and oils, it’s better to drench it with lightweight moisture that will encourage better cell regeneration and protein rebuilding. We adore Phytomer's Night Recharge Youth Enhancing Cream. Perfectly silky and soothing it literally envelopes your skin in nourishment and comfort and helps boost your skin's renewal as you sleep so you’ll wake up to calmer, plumper skin by morning. Obsessed.

The best makeup products to create photo filter inspired skin

by Jo Boyden on Aug 25 2023
I love a good photo filter, they have the ability to shave years off my face! No more fine lines and wrinkles, just smooth flawless skin instead! Well imagine being able to blur away those imperfections and create that soft-focus effect without using an app! Cue skin blurring makeup! That’s right, products that are actually formulated to give your skin that perfectly filtered look!Skin blurring products contain innovative ingredients that create a soft, diffused effect on our skin. These ingredients, such as silicone form a breathable invisible barrier on your skin’s surface filling in fine lines, pores and imperfections. They essentially provide a ‘smoothing’ canvas for your makeup, just like a filter does for your photos. Read on as we reveal our favourite skin blurring makeup products. Use these and you’ll not need to add a filter again! ELES Retexturizing Face PrimerPrimer may not be part of your daily makeup routine, in fact primers are a product many of us will forgo, but if you want to optimize the effects of your makeup and ensure it lasts all day (or night), this step shouldn't be skipped! And while makeup primers won’t enhance your skin quite like a bronzer, or conceal pesky pimples like a foundation, they are formulated to hide and blur imperfections! They are in fact touted as the photoshop of the makeup world! How they actually blur imperfections is down to two key ingredients: silicone particles which “fill in the gaps” on the surface of skin to even it out, and light-diffusing particles which scatter the light that hits the surface of the skin, creating an optical illusion that tricks the eye and makes pores and fine lines less visible. Sounds ideal right? This why we love ELES Cosmetics ELES Retexturizing Face Primer. Not only does this soothing, lightweight serum feel like actual silk on your skin, it basically helps protect, condition, smooth and blur out skin imperfections too! Want to look like a filtered goodness, and have makeup last the distance, try this! ELES Liquid Powder Mineral FoundationFor that filter-effect flawless finish you can achieve in photos, choosing the right foundation finish is key. A matte foundation is usually your best bet because it reflects less light, which makes pores less obvious and gives your skin a smoother look. It also cuts down on shine, so your makeup will look smooth and flawless as long as possible. We highly recommend ELES Cosmetics best-selling Liquid Powder Mineral Foundation. It’s a silky, mineral-enriched liquid foundation that glides on beautifully and sets to a soft, powder finish. Oh and it has broad spectrum sun protection too!If your skin is very dry though you might want to opt for a dewier finish. As well as choosing the right type of foundation for your skin, make sure you select the right colour too! For more information on how to choose the right foundation for your skin type click here.ELES Baked Finishing Powder in Diffused LightWhile your primer will blur imperfections and your foundation will provide you with a flawless base, a finishing power will complete the soft filtered finish to your skin!We love the ELES Baked Finishing Powder in Diffused Light. It’s the compact of miracles I tell you and will totally transform your skin in seconds! It acts itself like a photo filter on your skin, subtle enough for daily wear, yet gives you that truly “lit from within glow”!The microfine powder’s jet milled pigments bring a soft-focus finish for a blurring effect over imperfections and fine lines. The deeper tones in the powder enhance contours, while the highlight softly strobe and reflect away imperfections to make skin look professionally retouched and simply sublime every time! Incredibly light, it never gets chalky, weighs down the skin or even looks like your wearing powder, yet keeps any shine at bay. And all you have to do is apply your morning skincare, then simply brush a light layer all over your face with a makeup brush and watch your skin truly transform.

How to stop makeup from creasing under your eyes

by Jo Boyden on Jun 22 2023
Makeup creasing under my eyes is a pet hate of mine. We want to conceal those fine lines and dark under eye circles, but why does the concealer that’s supposed to help conceal, end up creasing and in turn exacerbating undereye signs of ageing!?Well if you are tired of dealing with those pesky creases under your eyes, ruining your flawless makeup look and well ageing you, you’ve come to the right place! Keep reading for the best tips and tricks so those under eye creases are no more! Hydrate and prep Before you even think about reaching for your makeup, it's crucial to hydrate and prep your under-eye area properly. Well-hydrated skin is more supple and less prone to creasing. Start by gently cleansing your skin, next apply a lightweight, nourishing eye cream (using an eye cream instead of your everyday moisturiser is imperative as it’s been specifically formulated for the delicate under-eye area.)To learn more about why you should use an eye cream instead of your moisturiser click here.Allow eye cream to absorb fully before moving on to the next step.Try: Age Correction Eye Contour. This power repair eye contour gives tired, ageing eyes the burst of hydration they need! Deeply nourishing thanks to its combination of marine collagen, marine elastin and hyaluronic acid, it targets signs of fatigue, visibly reducing puffiness, fine lines and wrinkles. What more could you want? It’s time to prime A good primer is a game-changer when it comes to your makeup! Creating an extra layer between your skin and makeup, primers are used to plump fine lines, blur blemishes, smooth skin, and help makeup last all day without caking, creasing or the need for constant touch-ups. They really are key to achieving smooth, flawless skin that’s perfectly prepped for your concealer and foundation!Look for a primer rich in nourishing vitamins and silica. Silica is a multi-functional ingredient and acts as an absorbing agent, and anti-creasing and caking agent!Apply a small amount onto your under-eye area and blend it in gently with your ring finger. This will help create a smooth surface for your concealer and eyeshadow.Try: ELES Retexturizing Face Primer. Not only does this soothing, lightweight serum feel like actual silk on your skin, it basically helps protect, condition, smooth and blur out skin imperfections too! Want to look like a filtered goodness, and have makeup last the distance, try this! Choose the correct concealer A good concealer will be your best friend when it comes to camouflaging dark circles! There are however a myriad of concealers out there, and selecting the right one is crucial when it comes to preventing under-eye creasing. Opt for a hydrating, lightweight, liquid or cream formula that has been specifically formulated for the delicate under-eye area. Avoid thick and heavy formulas, as they tend to settle into fine lines and creases. It's also essential to choose a shade that matches your skin tone, as a lighter shade can actually accentuate creases.Try ELES Dual Action Concealer, you won’t be disappointed! Now you need to apply it correctly While it very tempting to layer on that concealer to mask those dark circles, piling it on is the number one cause of creasing (and caking!) You need to instead apply sparingly! Firstly dot the concealer under your eyes, then use a small concealer brush or your fingertips, to gently blend it into the skin. Just remember, how you apply your concealer plays a vital role in preventing creasing! Make sure you blend the concealer evenly, paying attention to the inner corners and the outer edges. And try to avoid any excessive tugging or pulling at the skin too, as this can exacerbate the appearance of wrinkles and contribute to creasing. Set your makeup Setting your makeup is a crucial step to prevent creasing. After you've applied your concealer and finished your eye makeup, lightly dust a small amount of translucent powder over the under-eye area. Be careful not to go overboard with the powder, as excessive product can settle into lines and create a cakey appearance. Using a powder brush, gently press the powder onto the skin instead of swiping it.Try: ELES HD Translucent Powder. This 100% mineral silica powder mattifies the skin without caking or creasing, and softens the appearance of imperfections. It also absorbs any unwanted excess oil. Bonus! Avoid excess moisture Throughout the day, excess moisture can cause your makeup to crease. To combat this, gently blot your under-eye area with a tissue or blotting paper to remove any excess oil or sweat. Remember to pat instead of rubbing to avoid disrupting your makeup. Touch up strategically If you notice any creasing or fading throughout the day, don't fret! Instead of piling on more product, opt for a targeted touch-up. Gently dab a tiny amount of concealer onto the creased area using your ring finger and blend it in carefully. This method will help freshen up your makeup without creating a cakey or heavy look. Now you're armed with the knowledge and tips to keep those annoying under-eye creases at bay!

by Jo Boyden on Jun 15 2023
As we age, our once smooth and plump skin starts to dramatically change, we experience loss of elasticity, increased dryness, fine lines and wrinkles and age spots. Some of us even become more prone to blemishes and breakouts (eek!) But this doesn’t mean we can’t rock a stunning makeup look like we once did! It just means we need to change tactics. Preparing mature skin for makeup requires a somewhat different approach to ensure we can still achieve that much desired flawless and radiance look! Read on as we talk skin prep for the over 40’s, including tips and techniques to help keep makeup looking natural and fresh all day long! Start skin prep with a thorough cleanse Before you begin your makeup routine, it’s crucial that skin is cleansed thoroughly. You want to make sure any impurities, excess oil or residual makeup even, has been removed so that your makeup adheres to your skin better, and lasts longer! Look for a hydrating cleanser specifically designed to target ageing skin, or a gentle creamy cleanser if your skin tends to be on the more sensitive side.We highly recommend Pevonia’s Hydrating CleanserN.B remember regular exfoliation is also important as it can help promote cell turnover and improve the texture of mature skin. Exfoliate once or twice weekly with a gentle exfoliating cleanser. If you have sensitive skin and wish to steer clear of physical exfoliators (exfoliators with the “bits” in them) try a chemical of enzyme exfoliator. We can’t get enough of Phytomer’s Vegetal Exfoliant with Natural Enzymes Hydration, Hydration, Hydration If we are talking makeup application for the over 50’s (over 40’s even) the most imperative step in prepping skin, is to hydrate, hydrate, hydrate! For that flawless makeup finish we all want to achieve, you need to create the perfect canvas, and you can’t do that if your skin is patchy and parched (which sadly is a thing as we age). Invest in a high-quality serum and moisturiser that will nourish and plumps the skin. Look for products containing hyaluronic acid, ceramides and antioxidants to boost hydration and combat signs of ageing. Using a gemstone facial roller be extremely beneficial too.Additionally, consider using a hydrating facial mist rich in hyaluronic acid to boost hydration levels throughout the day.We love Pevonia’s Hyaluronic Acid Hydra Mist Don’t forget your sunscreen Next. it’s time for the sunscreen. No matter what your age, sunscreen is a non-negotiable! You can spend all the money in the world on skincare, but if you don’t use it in conjunction with sunscreen you may as well be pouring it down the drain!A great option for sunscreen for mature skin is ELES Luminous Defence Brightening Day protection SPF 50. To address these issues, choose a creamy, hydrating concealer and make sure it matches your skin tone. Apply it sparingly with a small brush or your fingertips, gently blending it into the skin. Make sure you avoid any excessive tugging or pulling, as it can exacerbate the appearance of wrinkles.Try ELES Dual Action Concealer, you won’t be disappointed!N.B For a youthful, lifted effect, apply a light-reflecting concealer or highlighter to the inner corners of your eyes, brow bone, and cheekbones. Set Makeup with a Finishing Powder To prolong the longevity of your makeup without sacrificing the dewy finish, lightly dust a translucent powder only on areas prone to excess oil, such as the T-zone. Avoid applying it to drier areas, as it can accentuate fine lines. Use a fluffy brush for a light application, ensuring your skin retains its natural radiance.Try ELES NEW Translucent Powder Always add colour for that youthful healthy glow Another sign of ageing is a dull and uneven complexion! Cue the magic of a good blush and/or bronzer. Simple apply a subtle blush shade to the apples of your cheeks for that youthful flushed affect and lightly dust bronzer along your cheekbones and temples to add warmth and dimension.Choose shades that complement your skin tone and always remember less is more! Create mature eyes that pop For your eyes, keep it simple and elegant. Use neutral eyeshadows that enhance your natural beauty. Avoid heavy or overly shimmery shadows, as they can emphasize creases. A soft, smudged eyeliner and a few coats of mascara will define your eyes without overpowering them. Also line the inner rim of your lower lash line or waterline as it’s otherwise known with a white pencil a waterline liner! (We recommend ELES’s Waterline liner).
