Don’t feel like wearing foundation? 4 alternative skin-perfecting products

by Jo Boyden on Oct 22 2021
We all have those days when we feel like paring back on the myriad of makeup we wear every day. You know swapping out our foundation for something less ‘full coverage’ so to speak, or even going makeup-free! But then for many of us we still need something to hide those unforgiving flaws or simply to enhance our complexion while making it look naturally flawless of course! Well here at BC we’ve got you covered. Read on for four skin-perfecting products that you can use instead of your foundation, they’ll boost your natural glow too! ELES Retexturizing Face PrimerOften overlooked, a good primer can be a godsend when it comes to achieving flawless skin. We are loving the ELES Retexturizing Face Primer. Not only does this soothing, lightweight serum feel like actual silk on your skin, it basically helps protect, condition, smooth and blur out skin imperfections too! Want to look like a filtered goodness, try this! ELES Age Defying BB Cream SPF 30If you’re looking to simplify your products because you’re a busy mum on the go like me or for days when you want little coverage a BB Cream is a must. Formulated with skincare benefits that include hydration, anti-ageing properties, and SPF protection, BB Creams are a quick and easy way to effectively even out your skin tone without caking on the makeup!I am a huge advocate for the ELES Luminous BB Cream 30. It primes, tints, nourishes, protects, blurs and evens out your skin tone for a truly, natural, flawless finish and thanks to its skin-loving ingredients including Vitamin E, Goji berry, Squalane; its multi-mineral complex, and age defying peptides, over time it will help to promote cell health, strengthen elasticity, reduce the appearance of fine lines and restore that natural glow you once donned!! What’s more, it really does feel like you aren’t even wearing makeup, no easy feat for a product with SPF for that matter! ELES Luminous CC Cream SPF 20While the idea of going foundation free in hindsight is great, having your imperfections out there for all to see isn’t so much. You know those obvious undereye dark circles, the hyperpigmentation you normally hide, or your rouge complexion thanks to facial flushing. Opting for a CC Cream though is the perfect solution! Plus, if you have rosacea or are suffering from acne the likelihood is your foundation could well have been exacerbating your condition!Unlike tinted moisturisers, foundations and even BB Creams, these miracle formulas are colour correcting. So instead of applying a thick layer of opaque makeup to cover your imperfections, the ELES Luminous CC Cream’s Photonic Crystal Technology “offsets” redness, and other skin flaws, subtly illuminating the skin. ELES Baked Finishing Powder in Diffused LightWe are all on the quest for those lightweight multi-tasking miracle products, and ELES’s Baked Finishing Powder in Diffused Light is just that! Your bronzer, highlighter and foundation powder combined into one clever compact that you can lightly brush over your face for beautiful ‘lit from within’ skin in seconds! The glow-giving base contains light-reflecting pigments to make skin look impossibly fresh while the gorgeous warm tones act like a photo filter on your skin.

5 ways to look fresh faced everyday

by Jo Boyden on Oct 15 2021
Wouldn’t we all love to wake to a fresh face every day? You know that perky looking, glowy skin we once donned many a year ago. Unfortunately, due to daily stresses, lack of sleep, environmental factors and more, our skin can look far from fresh and youthful! And instead, tired, dull and lacklustre. Urgh. The good news is however, that armed with a few key products and some insider tips, you can fake that fresh faced look daily! Firm and tighten your face with a supercharged serum It’ll leave your skin feeling super soft with a dewy, plumped appearance!Ok I have to admit I’m obsessed with my serums. And will not go a day without applying one before my moisturiser. They are the perfect skin booster, and in my eyes a complete necessity to your daily skincare routine, why? Because they help lock in moisture, working deep into your dermis thanks to their ability to penetrate the layers of the skin and work their magic. But also, because they tend to perform above and beyond many regular skincare products, due to their higher concentration of targeted active ingredients. To find out more about why you need a serum in your life click here.I have tried many a serum in my time, and while there are very few I don’t love, the two that stand out personally for me are Pevonia’s Age Correction Intensifier Collagen & MyOxy Caviar and Pevonia’s Vitamin C Complex.Pevonia’s Age Correction Intensifier Collagen & MyOxy Caviar is packed with anti-ageing and rehydrating goodness including collagen and hyaluronic acid that effectively nourish and oxygenate skin, repair cells, and diminish fine lines and wrinkles! Outstanding stuff. And when my skin needs a boost of radiance Pevonia’s C Complex becomes my other trusty go-to. Superhero glow-getter Vitamin C comes together with hydrating and anti-ageing powerhouse hyaluronic acid to quite literally drench skin with repairing antioxidants, deeply nourish and correct photo-damage! The citrus scent is simply heavenly, and it feels amazingly refreshing on application! But more importantly, the results speak for themselves! Radiant looking skin instantly. It’s the perfect morning pick-me-up! Seriously. Choose a multi-tasking moisturiser When skin is looking far from fresh, you really need to up the ante with your moisturiser. Look for moisturisers formulated with ingredients that will both refresh and brighten your complexion. Some ingredients to look out for include;Hyaluronic Acid (plumpness and firmness)Vitamin C (skin tone and brightness)Alpha Hydroxy Acids (fine lines, wrinkles, smoothness)Retinol (fine lines, wrinkles, skin texture)Marine Collagen (hydration, strength, elasticity)Peptides (skin texture and fine lines)As many of you will already know I have personally been in love with Pevonia’s Age Correction Marine Collagen Cream for years now! As have millions of others (since it is Pevonia’s global best-seller and for good reason!) Formulated with anti-ageing wonder ingredients marine collagen and hyaluronic, it’s a deeply nourishing, yet fine cream that feels amazing on application and really does leave skin radiant, super soft and supple, like it’s had that much-needed boost of moisture! I apply it every morning without fail!If I feel my skin is looking a little dull and needs that extra bit of pizzazz, I will up my night-time routine and turn to Pevonia’s Renewing Glycocides Cream before bed. It’s rich in AHA Glycolic, the super acid which dissolves the ‘glue’ that holds dead skins cells together. As the dead skin cells shed, the new smoother, brighter and younger looking skin underneath is revealed, so yes I do wake up to radiant, glowing skin as a result! Apply a de-puffing eye gel or serum An eye gel or serum will really help you refresh your tired eyes as well as improve with fine lines and wrinkles! Just look for products with key ingredients such as Green coffee, Vitamin C and Ginko Biloba, as they will help shrink capillaries and stimulate lymphatic drainage.Pevonia’s C Evolutive Eye Gel is a personal favourite of mine when it comes to tired, puffy eyes. Formulated with anti-ageing dynamo Vitamin C and skin saviours hyaluronic acid and Ginko Biloba it’ll have your peepers decongested and depuffed in one swift application! Lift and open your eyes by curling your eye lashes This can be really effective and makes sleepy eyes look all the more awake. Then apply two coats of mascara to lock in curls. For more tips on how to master bright, wide-awake eyes, click here. Buff highlighter into cheekbones for that lit from within glow If your skin is dull you need a little dose of liquid glow in the shape of an illuminator or highlighter! Apply to the tops of your cheekbones, brow bones and Cupid’s bow for a natural glow that will leave you looking rejuvenated and refreshed. Try ELES’s Stick Illuminator. I personally can’t get enough of it!You can also freshen the look of your skin instantly with more makeup you just need to follow a few key tips.
Beauty Collective - makeup tips for acne prone skin

Makeup tips for acne prone skin

by Jo Boyden on Sep 24 2021
Has your skin been feeling the effects of the last however many weeks thanks to the likes of lockdown, home-schooling and working from home!? Or are you simply prone to pesky pimples and adult acne?Whatever your situation we are here to tell you that when armed with the right makeup products and tips on how to best apply, you can effectively conceal those blemishes and feel confident in your skin! Simply read on as we reveal the top 7 makeup tips for acne prone skin according to the pros at BC. Use a primerFirst things first, before you can start to conceal your blemish prone skin you need to prep your face with a primer. A primer is an amazing must-have when it comes to prolonging the wear of your foundation, and let’s face it acne-prone skin tends to be on the oily side and the last thing you’ll want is for your foundation to slide right off your face by lunchtime! No sireee. Primers also add a ‘blurring effect’ to your skin to give the illusion of a smoother complexion. Phew!Just be sure to look for primers that will hydrate, soothe or replenish your skin and if your complexion tends to be oily as well as acne prone, be sure to pick a mattifying primer as it’ll help to combat the excess oil and shine and reduce the appearance of pore size. Try ELES’s Pore Perfecting Face Primer. It’s a light-textured oil free face primer which combats shine, absorbs excess oil, reduces the appearance of large open pores, promotes antiseptic properties which is great for blemish and breakout prone skin, and it really does keep your foundation looking flawless all day long! This is a great primer – I've been using it for a few years now. It helps keep my foundation looking amazing all day. It's mattifying but won't dry your skin. Sia PapageorgiouDo not cake on your makeup! Remember less is more so keep makeup simpleWearing multiple products from concealer to foundation to blush to illuminator can cause over stimulation so it’s best to keep things simple! Use a skin-friendly breathable foundation and opt for a concealer with some yellow tones to help colour correct any redness.Be sure to always use your foundation first, then apply concealer to affected areas only. This will ensure a smoother even base and a more natural finish but be sure to keep every layer light though – the secret to successful makeup for blemish prone skin! Less product to block the skin causing heat!Mineral makeup will be your best friend, and I know we are biased, but ELES Cosmetics is simply the best and the reviews speak volumes! Choose your foundation wiselySlathering thick foundation all over your face to hide pesky pimples and blemishes can be tempting we know, but it will only end up drawing attention to the bumps on your face as well as exacerbating your condition, so you need to choose your foundation wisely! You really need to navigate the ingredients in a foundation plus it’s best to steer clear of oil-based makeup, as excess oil production is a key cause of blemishes so oil-free formulas will be your best friend! Also avoid skin irritants like alcohol and fragrance which can be found in many a foundation. We recommend opting for a mineral formula every time. These contain no chemical nasties and will allow your skin to breathe freely. Try best-selling ELES Liquid Powder Mineral Foundation. “I love love love this product. It has a velvety feel as it glides on your skin and finishes with a plumping matte finish. It always covers my blemishes and gives great coverage without over doing it. Would not use any other foundation!!” Kassey Newell If your acne seems particularly sensitive to makeup, you might want to consider swapping out your love of liquid formulas for powder. Powder will control oil and help your makeup last longer. Just be sure you choose the right sort of powder though as cakey makeup will just highlight your blemishes even more. Foundations with nylon and kaolin give skin a blurred, airbrushed effect. Try ELES Mineral Powder Foundation. “I’m a bit of a powder lover when it comes to foundations as I find liquid formulations a little too much. I have however become more sceptical as I get older as a few power compacts I have tried have enhanced my fine lines. However not this one! It’s amazing! The coverage is just perfect! It looks so natural, in fact like I’m not wearing foundation at all, yet it completely hides my imperfections. I’m in my late 40’s but would recommend this product to anyone, any age whether you are simply looking for a translucent powder, a foundation to conceal your blemishes, or a wonderful base for ageing skin. It has become my daily go-to!” Melissa B Protect your skin with natural SPFWe all know wearing sun protection is a daily necessity, but we understand that if you suffer from blemishes the last thing you feel like doing is smothering your skin in oily sunscreen! Cue mineral makeup rich in zinc oxide! Zinc oxide, which is an anti-inflammatory was once used to treat acne and when mixed with other subtle ingredients, can give you everything from sun protection to coverage. Mineral-based makeup with zinc alone or combined with titanium dioxide provides a good, balanced UV protection and ‘natural’ coverage for those who have acne.ELES Cosmetics range of foundations have an SPF of 15 and above and feel like you aren’t wearing sunscreen at all! Genius. Use the right makeup toolsThe way you apply your makeup is almost as important as the products you use. We’ve all heard it before, touch your face with your hands and you’ll likely cause a breakout so it comes as no surprise that you might well have heard that it’s best not to use your fingers to apply your makeup since even the oil and bacteria on your fingers can irritate skin, also hand heat can add more warmth to an already warm, aggravated complexion. Instead, use a damp Beautyblender. It is the least irritating way to apply your product and honestly provides the most effective results! Not only is the sponge strangely soothing on your skin, but it also provides a more natural-looking coverage. Makeup brushes are another option but just beware that the brush bristles can irritate your sensitive skin, therefore opt for brush bristles made from taklon, a “green” and allergy free synthetic fibre. Its smooth synthetic fibres do not absorb or trap pigment making it easy to keep clean! And make sure you wash those tools! It’s easy to forget about our washing our brushes and makeup sponges but by keeping them clean you’ll ensure you won’t be using grubby, bacteria-filled tools all the time! Eek. Besides bacteria, both makeup brushes and sponges also accumulate dead skin cells and oil which can clog your pores leading to further skin irritation and pesky pimples! Also if you apply your makeup with a dirty bush the end result can be a streaky and patchy complexion! Clean brushes definitely make for a smoother makeup application and healthier skin! Always remove makeup before bedSleeping with a face full of makeup can and will result in skin irritability and breakouts. Makeup not only traps dead skin cells it also blocks our pores and when pores are blocked the skin can’t breathe and therefore regenerate so make sure you commit to removing every inch of makeup before hitting the hay. makeup mistakes

5 makeup mistakes that make your skin look dull and lacklustre

by Jo Boyden on Sep 17 2021
You’re religiously using your skin brightening, vitamin c packed serum, you’ve upped your weekly exercise regime, are practicing self-care rituals like there is no tomorrow, your drinking water like it’s going out of fashion, AND you’ve got super foods coming out of your ears, yet your skin is still looking dull and lifeless! Why? Chances are you could be doing a few things wrong when it comes to your makeup and we are here to tell you what! Read on as we divulge five common makeup mistakes that can actually make skin look dull and lacklustre! If you’re guilty of making them, stop now and transform dreary skin to deliciously radiant in no time! #1 You are not prepping your skin correctlyMakeup needs as smooth a canvas as possible to apply flawlessly, so if your face is covered with dead skin cells it’s not going to make for easy application! This is why weekly exfoliation followed by daily moisturising (before applying your makeup) is a must! A good exfoliator will remove any unwanted pesky dead cells, as well as dry flaky skin. Just be sure, after applying your moisturiser that you leave it to soak in for a few minutes before putting on your makeup, as the last thing you want is for that foundation of yours to slide right back off your face! #2 You are wearing too much foundationMakeup is meant to enhance, not mask your skin so we need to be mindful about the amount we apply! We get it, you’re having a bad skin day and those pesky pimples have reared their ugly head, or your skin is looking a little on the flushed side, but if you pile on the foundation in an attempt to hide those flaws, you can end up with a complexion that looks flat, heavy and lacklustre. So no matter what your skin type or condition don’t overdo it! Be sure to conceal only problem areas rather than slathering foundation all over. Opt for a translucent powder to eliminate shine or prep with a primer and follow with a skin care-infused foundation like ELES Liquid Powder Mineral Foundation. If your skin tends to be on the more dry side steer clear of powder as dry, powdered skin tends to look older, duller and drained! Instead, opt for a multi-faceted base like the ELES Age Defying BB Cream 30. This benefit-packed, innovative treatment cream primes, tints, nourishes, evens out skin tone and helps to strengthen and protect skin on contact. What’s more, it has SPF 30 to shelter skin against UV rays. For more information on which foundation type might be best for your skin click here. #3 You’re using the wrong colour for your complexionFoundations have a tendency to turn grey if the shade applied is lighter than your natural skin colour. At times, some foundations can even react with the natural oils in your skin giving your complexion a somewhat ashy look! This is where a primer can be beneficial as it serves as a barrier between your skin and makeup and soaks up any excess unwanted oil!Finding the perfection foundation shade according to your skin type can be tricky so it’s best to either seek assistance! Click here to understand what steps you need to take to find the foundation shade that’ll work best for you! #4 You don’t use a blushLack of colour on your face can result on slight lifeless looking skin. Blush is supposed to fake flushed cheeks and give your complexion a natural-looking rosy glow so be sure not to skip this vital step! Make sure you apply blush correctly though! Natural flushing occurs on the apples of your cheeks and a little below. It shouldn’t veer towards your nose or up to your temples! I am personally crazy about my blush and wear is all year around! My go-to is the ELES Baked Blush in Bouquet it adds a supple, rosy shimmer glow to my face and makes my cheek bones stand out! #5 You skip highlighterA girl can’t have enough glow, and if we are suffering from dullness, we could use all the help we can get! Even if skin is dry and lacklustre you can fake the appearance of a dewy complexion by applying a good highlighter or illuminator to your face, just be sure not to overdo it though! Simply apply to your brow bone, down the bridge of your nose and above your cheekbone and see it transform skin from dull to radiant. I love the ELES Stick illuminator, it honestly highlights my complexion like never before!
Insta worthy skin

6 steps to insta-worthy skin

by Jo Boyden on Sep 09 2021
It wasn't that long ago that I discovered the secret to many of my friends looking forever young on their social media pages, yet looking less, should I say, spritely in person; Makeup Apps or 'facetuning' as it's otherwise known. Sure, they've been around for a long while, but what I didn't know, until now, was just how advanced the apps are and how dramatically they can change both the look and tone of your face and skin! The thing is when I gave it a go, I realised just how fake I really did look! Why pretend to be something I'm not when I can actually create the illusion of younger, airbrushed skin in a few simple steps, using only a few makeup items?Let's face it, we do all want to look younger than our years. We all want that perfect skin with little or no evidence of makeup. Well, we are here to tell you how to get it and look completely natural at the same time! Step one: THE PREPIf you want to compete with an airbrushing app you've got to prep your skin correctly before reaching for your foundation!Firstly ensure you cleanse your skin thoroughly to remove any remnants of makeup and oil, then gently exfoliate to slough away those dead skin cells – remember you want a smooth, even surface to apply the perfect base, plus removing any unwanted dry skin and clogged pores will also allow your serum and moisturiser to seep into skin allowing it to properly work its magic. Next apply your serum according to your skin's specific needs, before layering with your chosen moisturiser. Moisturisers rich in hyaluronic acid will plump skin, providing the perfect cushioned effect. Step two: THE TOOLS OF THE TRADEWhen it comes to makeup application every makeup artist will tell you they swear by their tools. Many might opt for a foundation brush, but we are in love with the Pro Blender Sponge when applying our base. Not only is the sponge strangely soothing on your skin, it provides a more flawless, natural-looking coverage without effort. Step three: THE MULTI-TASKERNow it's time to get down to the nitty gritty. You might have a love for liquid foundations or maybe matte is your thing, but loaded with goji berries, minerals, vitamins and sun protection, we can't recommend enough the ELES Age-Defying BB Cream as your go-to base. This wonder cream is an extension of your skincare, your primer and your base in one. Simply apply it all over your cleansed skin for the silkiest and most undetectable coverage ever!Step four: THE PERFECTORNothing takes the years off more than a great under-eye concealer and the ELES Dual Action Concealer packed with collagen and vitamins C & E, not only conceals fine lines and dark circles, it smooths, brightens and treats them too! Apply beneath the eyes and pat into the skin to look as though you've just slept 10 hours. Step five: THE AIRBRUSHERFor that soft airbrushed finished to any base sweep the ELES Baked Finishing Powder in Diffused Light over skin. It's the compact of miracles! The deeper tones in the powder enhance contours, while the highlight softly strobe and reflect away imperfections to make skin look professionally retouched and simply sublime every time!Step six: THE YOUTH ENHANCERFor a pop of colour that looks fresh, dewy and youthful try ELES's Baked Blush. It comes in six gorgeous shades that multi-task as blush, eye shadow and when applied with a damp brushcan even work as a matte lip colour! The end result? Skin is left looking flawless – like a real-life insta-filter. And there you have it – six simple steps to skin so good, no filter required! The beauty of this routine is that it works with your skin rather than masking it, giving you that effortlessly polished look that turns heads both on and off screen. Whether you’re a makeup minimalist or love a full glam moment, these steps are your new go-to. Ready to get started? Disguise redness fast

Disguise redness fast – tips and tricks from the BC experts

by Jo Boyden on Sep 08 2021
Whether you suffer from rosacea, are prone to acne, or you are simply just over having a flushed face, you’ll be happy to know that it is possible to cover up nearly any skin imperfection with specific makeup. While adopting a tailored skincare routine is the best way to treat facial redness long-term, the right makeup will conceal your flaws fast, you just need to know what products to use and how to use them! Many of us, when we think of concealing flaws, we think foundation, and the thicker the more likely to hide those imperfections right? But what we don’t often consider is that slathering on foundation can and will only exacerbate certain skin conditions. The less you apply to your skin the less likely it will react! So before making your makeup choices you’ll need to understand what type of facial redness you actually suffer from first, then by following these daily tips from the experts at BC, your redness will be corrected and concealed and your confidence boosted in minutes too! Identify your skin condition Red, flushed and irritated skin can be attributed to a number of factors ranging from heat, alcohol, exercise or embarrassment to underlying skin conditions such as rosacea, acne, dermatitis and more. So your first port of call is to try and establish why you suffer from facial redness. This will then help you to select the right skincare and makeup products to best nurture and conceal your complexion. Get a clean start Prior to commencing your makeup routine, make sure you cleanse and moisturise your face with appropriate products for your specific skin condition. Just remember though, as much as you think your skin might need that soothing surge of moisture, applying too much cream can overdose our skin with actives which can sensitize it. Take only the size of a pea and gently pat the product into the skin to allow it to absorb slowly. If you have rosacea, Pevonia’s RS2 line is an absolute must! Specifically designed for those suffering from rosacea or skin conditions linked to rosacea, the RS2 Cleanser and RS2 Moisturiser will target those problems such as broken capillaries, persistent redness and congestion, desensitizing, soothing and decongesting skin.“I have had mild rosacea for about 10 years, and I've tried many products and I can honestly say that this is the only one I love and trust. It comforts and soothes my skin, reducing redness and leaving my skin wonderfully soft. I've learnt not to experiment with anything else now - this is all that I need.” Michelle W For blemishes and breakouts, we highly recommend Medicalia’s Clarifying Cleanser and Cream, as they work to effectively combat inflammation while controlling bacteria and acne lesions with Glycolic Acid, Salicylic Acid, Sorbitol, and other soothing and protective ingredients.“Been using this cleanser for a year now. Keeps my sebaceous filaments in check and has helped control my hormonal acne better than any other cleanser I’ve used.” Sophie H If it’s a flushed face we love Phytomer Accept Soothing Cleansing Milk and Douceur Marine Velvety Soothing Cream. This dream team soothes skin without irritation and acts to reduce redness while calming the sensations of any burning or stinging. Phytomer’s Douceur Marine Velvety Soothing Cream also strengthens the skin's natural defences against environmental aggression (climate, pollution, stress etc.).“After much trial and error, I’ve finally found a moisturizer that protects, softens, and reduces the look of redness on my very sensitive skin. I’ve been using it for a year and still can’t believe how cool, calm, and smooth its made my skin feel. This moisturizer is everything and I would recommend it to anyone who suffers from redness and sensitivities. Thank you Phytomer!” Samantha A Apply an SPF Applying a daily spf is a must. You already know your skin is sensitive, so overexposure to sunlight will only aggravate this, and remember even on cool, cloudy days it is possible for your skin to still burn.If you have rosacea, we are in love with Medicalia’s Sunscreen SPF 40 with Blue Light Shield. Featuring an ultra-hydrating, non-comedogenic and light textured formula it delivers anti-irritation benefits, hydration, comfort and coolness to sensitive, hyperpigmented and allergy prone skin. For blemishes and breakouts we highly recommend Pevonia’s YouthRenew Tinted Cream SPF 30. Lightweight, age-defying and pore refining, it delivers instant radiance while effectively protecting your complexion.“I love how smooth and blemish free this makes my face look. It is the best tinted cream I have tried.” Kylie J If it’s a flushed face we suggest ELES Luminous Defence Brightening Day Protection 50. Formulated with White Lotus Flower extract, it helps calm, repair and brighten skin. “I haven't used this product for long but it feels great going on and leaves my skin feeling soft and bright.” Natalee C Use a primer A makeup primer will help ensure your makeup remains in place all day! And let’s face it we don’t be wanting that makeup to slide off our skin and reveal a flushed complexion or unruly blemishes at any point right? Plus wearing a primer also creates a barrier between your skin and your makeup therefore preventing any further irritation. If you have rosacea, opt for ELES’s Retexturising Face Primer. The lightweight serum helps protect and condition sensitive skin, neutralize imperfections and give foundation a fault-free base.“One word to describe this product? Incredible. I had no idea makeup would stay put on my face so long before this product - just thought it was not possible!I'd tried other primers, and yes they smoothed out my skin, but as for lasting power? Non-existent. I'm never changing from Retexturising Primer ever! The tiniest bit really does go the longest way too. Great value. Great product.” Lucy G For blemishes and breakouts ELES’s Pore Perfecting Face Primer is a must-have! This light-textured, oil free face primer combats shine, absorbs excess oil, reduces the appearance of large open pores, promotes antiseptic properties and keeps foundation looking flawless!“A small amount goes a long way. Helps keep my oil controlled. Also, feels lovely.” Laurie B If it’s a flushed face we can’t get enough of ELES’s Retexture Crème Face Primer, it hydrates, soothes, calms and plumps skin with Aloe Barbadensis Gel, Chamomile Extract, Witch Hazel & Marigold.“Recently Received this Primer and it's now kicked my other primer out of the running for "go to" primer.” Sakura M Use the right tools The way you apply your makeup is almost as important as the products you use. Instead use a damp Pro-blender! It is the least irritating way to apply your product and honestly provides the most effective results! Not only is the sponge strangely soothing on your skin, it provides a more natural-looking coverage. Less is more so keep makeup simple If you have rosacea or are suffering from acne the likelihood is your foundation could be exacerbating your condition and wearing multiple products from concealer to foundation to blush to illuminator can cause over stimulation, so you need to choose wisely - there are a number of amazing products out there that actually work with your skin to correct its colour rather than just conceal it.If you have rosacea, you don’t want to over stimulate the skin by using too many products! So reach for multi-tasking products that treat, prime, conceal and even tone in one. We are talking about CC Creams. Unlike tinted moisturisers, foundations and even BB Creams, these miracle formulas are colour correcting. So instead of applying a thick layer of opaque makeup to cover the redness, the ELES CC Cream’s Photonic Crystal Technology “offsets” redness, and other skin imperfections, subtly illuminating the skin.“I have only just tried the ELES CC Cream after years of using the Mineral Foundation. I am really enjoying the CC cream! I find it smooths and evens out my pigments and lasts all throughout the day. I also have been mixing it with my Mineral Foundation for nighttime! Great product ELES, thank you!!” Georgina F For blemishes and breakouts excess oil production is a key cause of blemishes so oil-free formulas will be your best friend. Always apply your foundation first, then apply concealer to affected areas only. This will ensure a smoother even base and a more natural finish but be sure to keep every layer light though – the secret to successful makeup for blemish prone skin! Less product to block the skin causing heat! The ELES global best-seller – Liquid Powder Mineral Foundation will be your perfect pick, hypoallergenic and oil-free it allows your skin to breathe freely while providing the sunscreen and anti-oxidant protection ultrasensitive and reactive skin needs. It’s also best to opt for a concealer with some yellow tones to help colour correct redness.“Great product that I have been using for some time. It looks natural on and covers blemishes beautifully.” Kylie J If it’s a flushed face but neither of the above, you have a lot more flexibility with product choice. A CC Cream or Liquid Powder Mineral Foundation are still both great options, but if powder tends to be your go-to try the ELES Mineral Powder Foundation, a firm favourite of mine! The lightweight powder easily adjusts from sheer to richer, more opaque coverage as you build and is highly compatible with common skin sensitivities. It perfectly camouflages imperfections and facial redness and protects against ultraviolet damage too.“This is the only mineral powder foundation I have come across that I can actually use - the others leave my dry skin parched - but not this one. Blends beautifully and provides excellent coverage. Feels light as a feather. I sponge a little extra over my blemishes - covers redness and uneven skin tone without the caked on feeling of foundation and/or concealer, and I also use an eyeshadow brush to apply it to my eyelids as it is a fantastic base for eyeshadow. The packaging is just gorgeous too!” Rebecca V Always remove makeup before bed Sleeping with a face full of makeup can and will result in skin irritability and breakouts. Makeup not only traps dead skin cells it also blocks our pores and when pores are blocked the skin can’t breathe and therefore regenerate so make sure you commit to removing every inch of makeup before hitting the hay.To learn more about sleeping in makeup and what it really does to our skin click here.

Primers can smooth imperfections such as fine lines, large pores and minor pitting which comes with age, add instant hydration to the skin, as well as ensure a perfect canvas for makeup application! Genius! The ELES Retexturizing Face Primer is a must! Packed with anti-oxidant goodness including vitamins A, C & E, this lightweight serum helps protect, condition and smooth skin for a fault-free base! “One word to describe this product? Incredible. I had no idea makeup would stay put on my face so long before this product - just thought it was not possible! I tested this out one day at the races, and my makeup STAYED PUT the entire day - and I barely had to touch up to go out that night. It's really that good. I'd tried other primers, and yes they smoothed out my skin, but as for lasting power? Non-existent. I'm never changing from Retexturizing Primer ever! The tiniest bit really does go the longest way too. Great value. Great product.” Lucy Gardner ELES Mineral Powder FoundationFoundation is the perfect product to disguise visible signs of ageing, but you have to choose wisely. A face powder, when used correctly and frugally can be a fantastic makeup staple (I’m personally a huge lover of powder compacts) however, no matter your skin type, too much face powder can have an adverse effect and actually age you! This is because it can highlight fine lines and wrinkles instead of helping to conceal them, so it’s best to use powder sparingly – on your t-zone or as the perfect tool for touch ups or opt for a mineral foundation powder packed with skin lovely ingredients like ELES’s Mineral Foundation Powder. It’s the perfect buildable foundation – you can wear it from natural sheer to polished opaque and what’s more the minerals condition your skin while you’re wearing it adding a little subtle luminosity to your flawless finish. No fine lines and blemishes in sight!“I’m a bit of a powder lover when it comes to foundations as I find liquid formulations a little too much. I have however become more sceptical as I get older as a few power compacts I have tried have enhanced my fine lines. However not this one! It’s amazing! The coverage is just perfect! It looks so natural, in fact like I’m not wearing foundation at all, yet it completely hides my imperfections. I’m in my late 40’s but would recommend this product to anyone, any age whether you are simply looking for a translucent powder, a foundation to conceal your blemishes or a wonderful base for ageing skin. It has become my daily go-to!” Melissa B ELES Age Defying BB Cream 30Heavy duty matte foundations have a tendency to make older skin appear duller and more devitalised and can show up any facial hair eek! So you want a foundation that is subtle in terms of both coverage and finish and can enhance your natural features without bringing imperfections to attention!A hydrating or satin-finish liquid foundation will be your best choice, especially as skin gets drier with age. Foundations that have sheer coverage and dewy luminous foundations will be your best youth enhancing options especially for those concerned about lines and wrinkles.I am a huge advocate for the ELES Age Defying BB Cream 30, it is a multi-tasking wonder cream! It has the perfect light, dewy coverage and literally primes, tints, nourishes, evens out skin tone, and helps to strengthen and protect skin on application! “I absolutely love this product. I used it years ago, tried others but nothing compares. Such a beautiful feel on your skin and the perfect amount of glowy/dewy coverage. I love the spf included, I don’t need to use any other product but this on my Face of a morning. Perfect for aging skin when you want a lighter coverage that makes your skin look younger.” Krystle Wigley ELES Liquid Powder Mineral Foundation SPF 15If you do love a slightly more matte finish the best-selling ELES Liquid Powder Mineral Foundation SPF 15 should be your go-to. It’s a-mazing.“I used to work for Estee Lauder and a was used to great make-up from a young age, so it was a while before I gave another brand a chance. It was worth it. This ELES foundation is amazing and I've tried most of them! For my 50's skin this is the best. I've actually got my 80 yr old mum onto it and she loves it as well. Great smooth coverage, with silky, natural finish.” Melinda Hopkins ELES Dual Action ConcealerAs we age and our skin loses its youthful “plumpness” dark shadows become more prominent - under the eyes, around the nose, at the corners of the mouth etc. It can be tempting to reach for a heavy duty, light shaded concealer to hide these dark areas, the problem is that they can just make the dark shadows look dull and grey as opposed to concealing them! You should instead opt for peachy toned, lightweight concealers (that won’t cake on the skin or seep into fine lines and wrinkles) like the ELES Dual Action Concealer. This anti-ageing concealer is like 8 hours of sleep in a tube! Eyes honestly look refreshed after application and the clever formula provides continuous hydration and a natural longwearing finish so win win!“I love this product and have been using it for 2 years. You only need the littlest amount to hide dark under eyes reduce the look of wrinkles around your nose and mouth. I always have to have it.” Josephine Piper ELES Brow Blender PencilCreating the perfect brows can take years off your face (seriously). You just need to choose the right product and know how to apply it. Just as the hair on our heads can thin with age, so do our eyebrows, sparse brows are the ultimate giveaway as to a person’s age and can sadly make us look older than we actually are! I know right?! So to look younger, we want to create instantly fake fullness and to do this we need to fill them in with the perfect brow pencil. The ELES Brow Blender Pencil is a dual ended pencil - a unique brush tip to blend and shape brows on one end, and a soft-powder finish pencil to create full, natural looking brows on the other end.Tip: Apply the brow product in soft strokes to create the illusion of natural hair. Just be sure you don’t overfill the front part of your brow though! This area should have soft hair that graduates into more density. If you overfill this area you can make your eyebrows look way too harsh. “I have this brow blender in blonde and it is a great match for my brows. I love the texture of this brow pencil as it is soft enough to use without causing any pain, but firm enough to be able to draw on the missing hairs. Some eyebrow pencils are so hard that I find them painful, whereas others are so soft that I can't get a defined eyebrow. The ELES one is just perfect. I also love the attached spoolie to keep my unruly brows groomed.” Kate Knapman ELES Gel LiplinerOur hair isn’t the only thing that thins with age, unfortunately our once plump lips will begin to diminish as the years go on too, so it’s necessary to add fullness and a subtle colour to your lips in the way of lip pencil and a little coloured gloss. You can to choose a lipliner in the same shade as your natural lip colour or one shade darker. Try ELES Gel Lipliner for smooth, precision application. It has an extremely long wearing, super soft, waterproof formula which literally glides onto lips for transfer-proof, non-feathering wear for up to 7 hours!“I'm in my 50s and need something to fill the fine lines around my lips and this does it! It's absolutely brilliant, it's the best product I have ever used and believe me I've tried a few. It allows my lipstick to last the whole day without reapplying, I love it!” Traci Ring
Beauty Collective - 7 foundation mistakes

7 foundation mistakes that are making you look older and how to avoid them

by Jo Boyden on May 26 2021
All hail foundation! “The” makeup staple the majority of us can’t live without, and the one product that has the ability to cover redness, hide imperfections and smooth out skin texture, making way for a truly flawless complexion, even when we are having a “bad skin” day! But are we applying our foundation correctly? Are we using the right one for our skin type? After all applying foundation incorrectly or simply opting for the wrong base for our particular needs can be detrimental and actually add years to our skin! Well fear not! WE are here to help! Read on for the top 7 foundation mistakes you could be making and how to avoid them!Mistake No. 1: Not moisturising before applying your foundationHydrated skin is key to creating the perfect smooth surface for your foundation. If your skin is dehydrated it can have an adverse effect on your foundation’s appearance and make skin appear dull, dry and flaky too!Solution; Both your morning and evening skincare routine, no matter how busy you are, should include a good nourishing serum and anti-ageing moisturiser. Try products formulated with marine collagen and hyaluronic acid, two anti-ageing wonder ingredients. Just be sure not to overload your skin with product or overstimulate the sebum glands as producing excess oil can cause foundation to slide off your skin revealing what might be a less than desired complexion.Try; Two BC best-sellers - Pevonia Hyalouric Acid Hydra Serum and Pevonia Age Correction Marine Collagen Cream.Mistake No. 2: Using thick foundation formulationsThere is this pretence that as we age, we should opt for thicker foundation to cover our imperfections but actually when you use a full-coverage foundation or are too heavy-handed with your application, the makeup settles into the wrinkles, pronouncing them even more!Solution;Remember quality over quantity! Steer clear of the thick, full coverage foundation, instead opt for light, sheer bases that can be buildable, this way you can focus on areas that need that extra coverage.Try; ELES Cosmetics best-seller and multi-tasking wonder cream ELES Age Defying BB Cream 30. It literally primes, tints, nourishes, evens out skin tone, and helps to strengthen and protect skin on contact, Genius! Mistake No. 3: Overloading on powder foundation Face powder, when used correctly and frugally can be a fantastic makeup staple, however, no matter your skin type, too much face powder can actually age you. That’s right, it can, not only magnify fine lines and wrinkles instead of helping to conceal them, but also accentuate pores, flatten the complexion, as well as dull and clog your skin!Solution; If you can’t give up the powder (I hear you!) try switching to a breathable, sheer translucent powder or better still a mineral-based one and use it sparingly and carefully – on your t-zone, or for quick touch-up’s.Try; ELES’s Mineral Powder Foundation. I’ve been obsessed with this product for years! Mistake No. 4: Applying your foundation with the wrong toolsThe key to natural-looking makeup lies in mastering the art of blending. Foundation that isn’t blended well can look heavy and imperfect.Solution;Get yourself armed with a few good brushes and a Beauty Blender, these tools will stand you in good stead and the beauty blender will enable you to reach every contour of your face. It is meant to be used damp, allowing for a flawless application and ensuring that foundation never looks heavy!Try; ELES Pro-Blender Sponge Mistake No. 5: Testing foundation shades on the back of your handYes, many do this but are they walking away with the correct shade for their complexion? No one wants a foundation to be too light so they look ghostly, or too dark so they look like they’ve spent too long in the sun!Solution; The back of your hands tends to be darker than the skin on your face so it’s best to trial a few shades on both your jawline and neck. Just remember though your face tends to get much more sun exposure than your neck so you really want to find a foundation shade that matches both areas when blended into the skin. Mistake No. 6: Selecting a cool skin base that is wrong for your skin toneMany foundations come in warm AND cool tones and choosing the wrong one for your skin can be detrimental.Solution;Opt for warmer tones as you get older that help counteract complexion pinkness that comes with thinning of the skin and exposure of fine capillaries. Warmer tones also conceal shadows better which means you need less concealer. Or give a CC Cream a go. Also known as colour correctors, they serve multiple purposes including disguising sallowness and imperfections such as dark spots and redness common with skin ageing.Try; The ELES Luminous CC Cream SPF 20. It’s a lightweight, oil-free, colour correcting cream with broad spectrum protection and demi-matte finish. And while it’s technically not a foundation, the full coverage pigments adapt to individual skin tones “cancelling” redness—be it from rosacea, pimples, irritation, you name it, while skin nourishing and brightening ingredients help even tone, diminish imperfections and maintain a healthy, youthful complexion. Mistake No. 7: You’re using the wrong foundation formula for your skin typeFrom mineral to traditional formulations, matte foundation to tinted moisturiser, oil-free to liquid, powder to stick and more, there are so many foundation formulations on the market so it can be tricky to know which is the right one for you! But knowing is key to creating the perfect base!Solution;Check out one of our latest blogs. It gives you the lowdown on each foundation type and which one will be best for your skin type and concern.

BB Cream that will really benefit your skin

The BB Cream that will really benefit your skin

by Jo Boyden on May 06 2021
BB Cream, beauty balm, blemish balm…We’ve all heard of the infamous BB Cream, right? But do we really understand its benefits or why we should invest in one for that matter? Well, I’m here to give you the low down on this beauty multi-tasker and how it can (and will!) totally transform your skin. So what exactly is a BB Cream? In a nutshell, BB creams are your 3-in-one foundation. They offer all the benefits of a light-to-medium foundation (and sometimes fuller-coverage as well) in a speedier formula that nourishes, corrects, and protects your skin too! Its smoother texture also allows BB Cream to function as a primer by evening out skin tone for flawless makeup application. Is a BB Cream for me?If you’re a busy mum on the go like me, you’re simply looking to simplify the products in your morning routine, or for days when you want a little coverage but don’t have time to apply a full face of makeup, then a BB Cream is a must. Formulated with skincare benefits that include hydration, anti-ageing properties, and SPF protection, BB Creams are a quick and easy way to effectively even out your skin tone without caking on the makeup!Problem is, with so many on the market, which is the right one for you?Your moisturiser, primer, sunscreen and foundation in one, the ELES Age-Defying BB cream SPF 30 is a multi-tasking makeup miracle, suitable for all skin types! A big call I know, but it’s not BC’s best-seller for nothing! This BB Cream primes, tints, nourishes, protects, blurs and evens out your skin tone for a truly, natural, flawless finish. And thanks to its skin-loving ingredients including Vitamin E, Goji berry, Squalane; its multi-mineral complex, and age defying peptides, over time it will help to promote cell health, strengthen elasticity, reduce the appearance of fine lines and restore that natural glow you once donned! What’s more, you’ll feel as though you aren’t even wearing makeup, no easy feat for a foundation or any product with SPF for that matter! How do I apply it?Because BB Cream isn’t quite as thick as a traditional foundation and has the slip of a moisturiser, it’s easy to blend for a seamless finish. Using the warmth of your fingers, or a damp beauty sponge if you’d prefer, blend until it melts into skin to achieve a smooth even finish. The ELES Age-Defying BB Cream 30 can be applied alone as your moisturiser, primer and foundation in one or after your moisturiser if your skin if feeling a little parched. Skin caring and skin perfecting in one simple step! And who doesn’t want instantly healthy even skin with a sheer luminous tint!

Suffering from rosacea? 4 essential products for covering up facial redness fast

by Jo Boyden on Apr 22 2021
If you have rosacea and constantly fret over your facial redness, you are likely to be on the forever quest for the best redness reducing skincare, and makeup products too!Since we’ve already advised of our favourite rosacea fighting skincare collection, it’s now time to talk makeup! While skin redness can be caused by a number of factors, the good news is it can be covered up! You just need to know how and with what, since falling victim to poor product choices will only result in exacerbating sensitive skin conditions. Understanding what key ingredients to look out for, and opting for mineral makeup where you can, is a must!So read on to understand what to look for, as well as our top 4 product picks for concealing rosacea redness. We promise they will not only give you back your confidence, but they’ll actually benefit your skin and help calm symptoms too! What to look for; Products with fewer ingredients Generally speaking, the simpler the ingredient list, the better, as less ingredients to irritate your already stressed skin! Products that are alcohol free, paraben free and fragrance free! Just as you would with your skincare, make sure you steer clear of makeup containing these ingredients, in fact the three most common irritants there are! Products containing calming and repairing ingredients We are very fortunate today that makeup formulations can include skincare ingredients that can help calm, soothe, and correct skin! Look for products that include ingredients such as aloe, chamomile, zinc oxide, titanium dioxide and vitamin e. Products that are breathable Make sure you select products that are ‘breathable’ meaning they’ll allow your skin to still breath and enhance your complexion, instead of simply clogging up pores which will only irritate skin even more. Mineral makeup will be your best friend. Our top picks; Best Primer: ELES RETEXTURE CRÈME FACE PRIMERUsing a primer will create a smooth foundation for your makeup while ensuring it stays in place all day, and we don’t be wanting our foundation sliding off our face and revealing its redness now do we! It’ll also create a barrier between your skin and your makeup preventing any further irritation. Our go-to primer for all skin types even those with seriously sensitive skin is the ELES Retexture Crème Face Primer. It’s a deeply soothing liquid-cream made with Aloe Vera leaf extract, Roman Chamomile, Witch Hazel, Calendula, Mallow Flower and Centaurea Cyanus Flower extract, which leaves skin with the smoothest sensation. It soothes, hydrates, retexturizes and refines, so foundation applies effortlessly and endures impeccably for hours longer.Best full coverage: ELES LIQUID POWDER MINERAL FOUNDATION If you haven’t tried this foundation before, I highly recommend you do! It’s ELES Cosmetics's no. 1 best-seller and for very good reason! It quite literally glides onto skin effortlessly, thanks to its silky liquid formulation, yet sets to a soft powder finish which lasts all day. It looks totally natural on application yet covers up facial redness and blemishes beautifully, what’s more it’s breathable which means it won’t clog pores, provides the sunscreen and antioxidant protection that ultrasensitive skin needs, and is formulated with skin-loving ingredients which means it not only conceals skin but protects it throughout the day too! Genius! Best sheer coverage: ELES MINERAL POWDER FOUNDATION As a sufferer of want for a better word ‘flushed skin’ I personally LOVE the best-selling ELES Mineral Powder Foundation! It’s one of my all-time favourites. It’s one of the most natural-looking, if not THE most natural-looking foundations I have in fact ever tried and being in the industry for 20 years I’ve tried many! It contains zero chemical nasties, instead, it’s packed with skin loving ingredients including vitamins A & E, can be used as a buildable foundation from natural sheer to polished opaque (dependant on what you need) and it’s highly compatible with common skin sensitivities, working wonders at camouflaging facial redness while protecting skin against ultraviolet damage too! Best overall product: ELES LUMINOUS CC CREAM 20 Rather than covering up your redness with a thick layer of concealer followed by foundation, you can always opt for a colour corrector which will help visually correct redness and even out skin tone. Using one with UV protection will also help shield your sensitive skin from exposure that can aggravate rosacea. The ELES Luminous CC Cream SPF 20 is a game changer! It’s a lightweight, oil-free, colour correcting cream with broad spectrum protection that really does multi-task like no other! And while it’s technically not a foundation, the full coverage pigments cover redness—be it from rosacea, pimples, irritation, you name it—so well that you very well may be able to get away without wearing any other makeup.
Beauty Collective - Conceal

3 common skin concerns and how to best conceal them

by Jo Boyden on Mar 26 2021
Whether you are prone to acne, suffer from hyperpigmentation or your skin appears forever red (thank you rosacea!), there really are genius ways to cover up your skin concerns without further aggravating the issue, you just need to know what to use and how!Don’t get me wrong, it’s imperative to fix the problem rather than simply hiding it, (cue tailored skincare), but what if I told you there are products (“skincare makeup” to be precise) that offer a solution to the seemingly never-ending battle against eg. breakouts. Makeup formulated with skin loving ingredients that’ll effectively calm and conceal your problematic complexion without exacerbating it. After all who hasn’t at some stage awoken to an outbreak of pesky pimples or skin looking ridiculously rouge thanks so a rosacea flare-up and needed that quick makeup fix?So read on to learn how to best conceal your skin dependant on your concern and relish in the results. AcneIf you suffer from acne the likelihood is your foundation could be exacerbating it. I’m sure we’ve all been guilty of hiding those flaws by slathering on foundation and the thicker the better right? But have you really thought about what foundation you are using? Could it be formulated with chemicals that will cause the skin to worsen? When it comes to acne prone skin, mineral makeup should become your best friend. Opt for mineral foundations rich in anti-inflammatory zinc! But before applying your base, using a primer first will ensure your makeup remains in place all day long, and let’s face it we don’t be wanting that makeup to slide straight off our skin a reveal those unruly blemishes right? Plus wearing a primer will create a barrier between your skin and foundation preventing it from seeping into pores creating more havoc! For blemishes and breakouts, ELES’s Pore Perfecting Face Primer is a must! It’s a light-textured oil free face primer that will firstly combat any shine you might have as it absorbs excess oil, but it also reduces the appearance of large open pores and promotes antiseptic properties to keep skin at bay!Next step is to cover up those blemishes without aggravating them. Best-selling ELES Liquid Powder Mineral Foundation will be your go-to solution. Not only is it formulated with anti-inflammatory zinc, it allows skin to “breathe freely” whilst shielding against age aggressors. It’s free of heavy fillers and pore-clogging ingredients (phew!) and the skin-safe formula contains no chemical ‘nasties’ or potential irritants, such as fragrance, talc, oil and dyes.Sensitive or rosacea prone skinIf you have rosacea, you don’t want to overstimulate the skin, remember less is more! Less product to clog your complexion which in turn causes heat, making skin even more red and aggravated! Instead, you want to use makeup that will not only effectively conceal redness but soothe and calm the skin too!As a sufferer of want for a better word ‘flushed skin’ I personally LOVE the best-selling ELES Mineral Powder foundation! It contains zero chemical nasties, instead, it’s packed with skin loving ingredients including vitamins A & E, can be used as a buildable foundation from natural sheer to polished opaque (dependant on what you need) and it’s highly compatible with common skin sensitivities, perfectly camouflaging facial redness while protecting skin against ultraviolet damage too!Just remember when it comes to choosing your foundation shade be sure to avoid products that are too yellow. Neutral shades are best and will help reduce the redness harmoniously.Lastly, the way you apply your makeup is almost as important as the products you use too! Instead, use a damp latex-free beauty blender! It is the least irritating way to apply your product and honestly provides the most effective results! Not only is the sponge strangely soothing on your skin, but is also so easy to clean after use and minimises the amount of bacteria that comes into contact with your skin, making it the perfect beauty tool for those suffering from sensitive complexions.Makeup brushes are another option but just beware that the brush bristles can irritate your sensitive skin, therefore opt for brush bristles made from taklon, a “green” and allergy free synthetic fibre. Its smooth synthetic fibres do not absorb or trap pigment making it easy to keep clean!HyperpigmentationYou can fight discolouration in your skin by keeping it protected with sunscreen. Sure SPF is the best way to decrease your chances of getting hyperpigmentation but for those of us who suffer from it, SPF will actually help reduce it too!Double-duty products will be your best friend. Look for foundations with sunscreen and complexion-perfecting ingredients such as vitamin A & E, zinc and titanium dioxide. We love the ELES Luminous CC Cream 20 and for very good reason!! Colour correcting and broad-spectrum protection in one, it adapts to your skin tone so it will darken and lighten as needed to blend and conceal pigmentation, while skin nourishing and brightening ingredients help balance your complexion and fight free radicals for a more even, youthful glow.
Beauty Collective Cloud SKin

How to get ‘Cloud skin’ – the newest beauty trend you need to know now

by Jo Boyden on Mar 15 2021
From glowy ‘Glass skin’ to a clear ‘Cloudless’ complexion, there’s now a new beauty trend taking centre stage, otherwise known as ‘Cloud’ skin!Much like its predecessors, cloud skin is simply another variation of ‘perfect skin’, but instead of perfecting the iridescent high shine of glass skin, or achieving the perfect, poreless complexion of cloudless skin, Cloud skin is about strategically mixing both skincare and makeup to create an almost soft-focus, ‘lit-from-within’ effect on the skin, an ethereal glow mastered by using different mediums from dewy, glowing to matte, and we are here to tell you how! So read on for a step-by-step on how best to achieve this latest skin craze! You are going to love the results… Prep, prep, prep Before you even begin to master the makeup for this trend you need to make sure your skin is prepped to perfection. You want to achieve an angelic glow so super hydrating products are a must.Opt for skincare formulated with hyaluronic acid and other moisture-boosting ingredients such as glycerin, marine collagen, and squalane. It’s important to follow a daily skincare routine and we highly recommend Pevonia’s Power Repair line. Any Pevonia lover will tell you this is the “go-to” line for dramatically hydrating the skin and smoothing away dehydration lines. Abundant in Hyaluronic, Collagen, Glycerin, and Squalane, the cleanser, serums, and creams are like a moisture magnet, plumping and firming the skin. I personally LOVE and religiously use the Hydrating Cleanser, Hydrating Toner, Hyaluronic Acid Hydra Serum and Marine Collagen Cream. The serum – the newest product in the range, features one of the highest concentrates of hyaluronic acid on the market! It deeply penetrates the skin delivering the ultimate hydrating and skin-smoothing results and leaves skin’s texture softer, plumper, healthier and luminous after every application. It’s like gold dust.At night it’s also important to incorporate an oil into your routine – beyond helping to seal in hydration, a face oil will provide nourishment of its own too. I suggest trying Pevonia’s Vitaminic Concentrate every time. This soothing, silky oil has the most amazing mandarin aroma (it’s formulated with Mandarin Essential Oil) and is quite literally worth its weight in gold! It’s fast-absorbing and radically hydrating! So you’ll wake up to smooth, supple, and seriously glowy skin every morning. I kid you not.N.B For the month of March, 2021, when you purchase the Power Repair Marine Collagen Cream, you’ll receive a Hydrating Cleanser and Toner 50ml for FREE! Ace your base Once you’ve completed your skincare routine it’s time to nail your base. Start by priming your skin then apply a luminous foundation. I love the ELES Mineral Sheer Tint as it imparts a sheer natural radiance as it nourishes, protects, and corrects the skin. Apply with Pro Blender sponge for a more flawless, natural-looking coverage without effort. Now you need to set your foundation with a translucent powder. Using a brush apply to the forehead, under the cheekbones, over your nose and chin to achieve the blurred, hazy effect. The ELES Mineral Powder Foundation is best for this. Add a natural glow While we don’t want to create the high shine glow of the glass skin trend, subtle highlighting is still a must. Instead of using an all-out liquid shimmer illuminator, apply a sheer highlighter to your cheeks, eyes, and cupid’s bow (upper lip line) for just that right amount of illumination for a light, soft and subtle glow. You will adore ELES’s Baked Finishing Powder in Diffused Light. It quite literally tames shine and imparts a subtle radiance for polished luminosity and its jet-milled pigments create an airbrushed effect, the perfect tool for achieving ‘Cloud’ skin! Have healthy habits While this trend is indeed all about the skincare and makeup you use, healthy lifestyle habits will also play a role;Diet – say no to those sugary desserts and processed foods we all like to demolish! This is all about clean beauty, lots of raw veggies, leafy greens, poke bowls, and lean proteins.Exercise – Just 30 minutes of exercise a day can make a huge difference to our well-being, body, and skin too! Exercise can help increase oxygen and blood flow to the skin neutralizing the free radicals that damage it! It also promotes collagen production and new skin cells which keeps our skin looking younger!Sleep – this one gets me every time! While despite being a busy working mum of two, I do manage to find time to exercise daily, even if only on some days for a 30-minute walk with my kids and our dog! But sleep…and at least 8 hours of it, I struggle! All the harder when you are in the know of just how important it is, not only for your skin but your health and wellbeing too! If you struggle like me to get that ample amount of blissful slumber, it’s time to change things up! Use meditation tools for relaxation - I’m loving the Headspace and Calm apps, force yourself to put your phone down an hour before bed (no really!) and instead of indulging in yet another night of Netflix, pick up that book you’ve been meaning to read for months…reading a book before bed really does help you drift off into slumberland. Go the extra distance If you want to take your skin to the next level head to a Pevonia salon or spa and indulge in the new Hydra-Cloud facial. It’s an amazing mask treatment that combines hyaluronic acid and micronized cotton to deeply hydrate and tighten the skin. Trust me when I say your complexion resurfaces instantly brighter, visibly smooth, and superbly hydrated with an ultra-cool and refreshed feel. This true sensorial experience is sublime!

by Jo Boyden on Mar 03 2021
Whether your skin is oily, prone to breakouts, sits on the more sensitive side or is simply dry, it’s important to take care of it with good skincare products as well as using the right foundation base too. From mineral to traditional formulations, matte foundation to tinted moisturiser, oil-free to liquid, powder to stick and more, there really is a foundation out there for every skin type and need, but with so many options on the market, it’s not always easy knowing which is likely the best for you! And then there’s the issue of finding the correct colour too!So whether you are looking for the best foundation to help conceal those pesky pimples, without being the cause of yet another breakout, are after a longer-lasting formula which won’t slide of your oily-prone skin in next to no time, or are simply having trouble determining what might be best for your dry, dehydrated complexion, BC have you covered.First things first though is understanding your skin type as this will dictate what’s right for you and we are here to tell you how; For dry, dehydrated and lack-lustre skinChoose a liquid, stick or tinted moisturising foundation.Liquid and sticks both tend to have a creamy texture and are formulated with ingredients that deliver moisture directly to the skin while offering great coverage too.Try: ELES Foundation Stick. It provides the coverage of a concealer, the fluidity of a liquid and the weightlessness of a tinted moisturiser in a longwearing formula that delivers flawless, natural coverage! Winning. If you prefer something with a dewier finish, try ELES Mineral Sheet Tint SPF 20 For Oily skinSteer clear of foundations with a dewy finish. This is because oily skin can make the foundation appear way too shiny. Instead opt for a matte, semi-matte powder or Oil-free foundation, whether it be a liquid to powder formulation or a powder compact. They contain ingredients that absorb oil, creating a smooth, matte finish.Mineral makeup often works well on oily skin because the dry particles tend to absorb moisture and prevent shine.Try: ELES Liquid Powder Mineral Foundation For problematic skin prone to breakouts and skin sensitivityIf you struggle with blemished or sensitive skin, you really need to navigate the ingredients in a foundation. It’s best to avoid skin irritants like alcohol and fragrance which can be found in many a foundation and opt for a mineral formula every time. These contain no chemical nasties and will allow your skin to breathe freely.Try: ELES Liquid Powder Mineral Foundation or ELES Mineral Powder Foundation For combination skinCombination skin can be a little tricky as you don’t want to accentuate the dry patches but you need a base that will treat the extra oily spots. A mineral powder foundation will allow you to distribute the oil-absorbing makeup where you need it and less where you don’t without leaving visible lines like some foundations do.Try: ELES Mineral Foundation Powder or treat the oil with a mattifying primer first before applying ELES Liquid Powder Mineral Foundation. For ageing skin with pronounced fine lines and wrinklesThere is one type of foundation you should sadly seek to avoid as your skin starts to really age and that’s piling on the powdered foundation. Most face powders tend to magnify lines in the skin, accentuate pores and flatten the complexion which in turn can age us.Try: If you can’t give up your powder, we get you, but try simply switching to a sheer translucent powder or a mineral-based one. We highly recommend the ELES Mineral Foundation Powder. ELES HD Luminous Foundation is a must too as it will reduce shine but create a youthful luminosity.Once you’ve selected the right foundation formula the next challenge is choosing the correct colour. But this goes beyond simply looking at your skin tone, instead, you need to understand your skin’s undertone, the colour from underneath the surface of your skin that affects your overall hue…A cool undertone is generally associated with skin that has hints of blue, pink or ruby red, while a warm undertone is more peachy, golden or yellow. To work out which you are, one trick is to look at the veins in your wrist – if they appear blue or purple in colour, you’re cool, if they are green, your warm. And if you have a mix of both you’re neutral! For a cool complexion, a foundation with a pink undertone will be best, if your complexion is on the warm side go with a shade that has yellow undertones.Another option is to do the three-stripe trick. Take three foundations that are close to your skin tone, but one that looks more pink, one that looks more yellow and one that looks neutral in colour. Apply one stripe of each along your jawline and gentle blend. Whichever shade disappears into the skin will give an indication of what the undertone really is.Now your ready for flawless foundation and no more second guessing if you’re wearing the right formula for you!

Mastering eyeshadow application. Why and how you should wear it

by Jo Boyden on Dec 21 2020
Ever been seduced into buying a new eyeshadow palette of tantalising shades only to discover the majority of them are unwearable? Or you simply have no idea where to start when it comes to applying them?Let’s face it, applying eyeshadow correctly, I’m talking multiply layers of varying shades to create stand out eyes, is an art form! So it’s no surprise that many of us either get it wrong or simply shy away from shadow! But wearing eyeshadow correctly can have a big impact on the way we look...and for the better! It has the power to enhance, define and complement your eyes in all but a few simple sweeps, you just need to know how!So read on to discover our top tips and become the master of your own eyeshadow destiny in next to no time. You won’t be disappointed with the results, trust me! Go neutral If you’re starting out on your eyeshadow journey its best to keep things simple. By using just a few neutral shades you can contour your eyes and add depth and dimension in a soft and subtle way. We are in love with the new ELES Naturals Collection Eyeshadow Trios. A choice of not one, but four palettes in a combination of three beautiful earth tones to suit everyone! The soft and subtle powder shadows apply smoothly and effortlessly and since they are pigment packed, every shade delivers rich, opaque colour for hours of crease-resistant wear! Use the right brushes! Know those little foam wands or brushes that come in some eyeshadow compacts? Ditch them! They are awful for applying product with precision!Flawless eyeshadow application is ALL in the brushes! So investing in a good eyeshadow brush (or three!) is paramount as it’ll help laydown powder shadows, setting them in place for the day. Opt for a dense base shadow brush to impart colour on the lid first, a blending brush for blending and highlighting and a flat definer brush to line and define your eyes! Don’t worry we are about to tell you how to use them! Apply shadows in the correct order (follow our diagram) Have your palette at the ready but unsure which shade should go where? This handy diagram should become your go to; Lightest ‘highlighting’ colour Medium shadow colour Darkest ‘smokey’ colour Start by applying the lightest shade (a white or nude) from your palette over your entire lid, all the way to the inner corner, using a base shadow brush. You really need this light shadow to perfect your look as it’ll help open up your eyes and make your colour ‘pop’. Just be sure to use your brush in a dabbing not dragging motion though as this is the key to applying ‘streak-less’ shadow!Next use a tapered blending brush to apply a medium shade into your crease (the curve above your eyelid) blending from the outer corners inwards.Use the same brush to apply the dark shade to the outer corner of your eyelid. Extend it outwards and upwards to create a smoky effect so to speak, then blend it inwards slightly. Applying this darker shadow slightly beyond your crease is the key to adding real dimension to your eyes.Additional tip: If you want to take your look from day to night up the anti! Don’t let the neutral shades fool you. By dampening your brush you can add intensity, just be sure to apply your foundation after your eyes are finished so any eyeshadow fallout can be easily dusted off. Complete your look Eyeliner, when applied correctly can make your lashes look thicker and your eyes wider. So to complete your look, instead of using an eyeliner, you can use the darkest shade of your shadows to create an impactful, well defined eye. Simple use a flat definer brush and press the dark shadow along the edges of your upper eyelid where your eyelashes begin and along the lower lash line. The finish with lashings of mascara. Yes it’s that simple! And with practice comes perfection.

Highly skilled makeup professionals can make anyone look pore-less, glamourous, and red carpet ready, so read on to learn about their top tips and how to incorporate them into your daily makeup routine. Spend more time prepping your skin Every makeup routine should start with well-prepped skin, after all, you don’t just want to look like you’re wearing makeup but look great in the makeup you are wearing. And spending an extra 10 minutes means a fresher face in the end!If skin is dull, dry, or fatigued incorporate a super-hydrating serum rich in hyaluronic acid underneath your moisturiser – to give mature complexions a healthy sheen. Just remember quenching the skin before applying makeup really will help boost brightness.Try: Pevonia Hyaluronic Acid Hydra Serum Go for a gradual layered approach when it comes to your base application The ‘overdone’ look never did anyone any favours so instead of slathering on that matte foundation you’ve been faithful to for years opt for a gradual layered approach which will build both colour and coverage which looks natural. Using more products but less of it will achieve the best result. Start with a primer or tinted cream like your BB’s or CC – for a sheer base that’ll correct skin undertones while brightening your complexion.Switching to a radiance-boosting liquid foundation or even applying illuminator over your base will immediately restore a little radiance to your skin. You can apply it over your primer, BB or CC if/where you feel you need extra coverage.Just remember, you want your makeup to look like an extension of yourself, a somewhat better version, rather than a separate mask and illuminating or light reflecting products will help achieve that more youthful glow every time. If you simply love your matte foundation and aren’t ready for change, just mix it with moisturizer to lighten your coverage and achieve a more dewy effect.Try: ELES Luminous CC Cream 20 and ELES Stick Illuminator Apply your bronzer and blush to the right areas of your face A natural, healthy look can be achieved by applying both bronzer and blush to your face, but where you apply it can have a huge impact! For that subtle lift, apply blush high up on your cheeks, along the upper cheekbones rather than on the apples. Then subtly sculpt your face with bronzer by applying it in a big 3 shape on either side of the face, curving from your forehead to the tops of your cheekbones and under the jawline. Then blend.Try: ELES Baked Blush followed by ELES Baked Bronzer in Sunbeam for a healthy glow with a touch of sheer radiance. Love your liner A good eyeliner is imperative to making eyes pop. A black gel pencil in the waterline top and bottom will give eyes shape and expression without looking overdone. Follow with a waterline pencil on the lower lash line to really open eyes up. It’ll also act as an instant freshener when eyes are red and/or tired.Try: ELES Superwear Gel Liner for super smooth easy lining, followed by ELES Waterline Liner for stand out eyes. Fill and extend eyebrows for bigger eyes Your brows can completely change how your face looks, and fuller, well shaped brows will add immediate dimension and help to sculpt the face making you look younger and more awake!Actually filling in your eyebrows from the top of the brow and elongating it gives eyes a more youthful look. For longevity it’s best to build up your brows with a combo of brow pencil then set with a powder shadow one shade lighter than brows.Try ELES Precision Brow pencil and ELES Brow Sculpt Match your lipliner to your lip colour Even if your lips tend to be on the paler side you should match your lip liner to the colour of your lips, not your darker (or lighter!) lipstick shade. A natural-toned liner will make it easier to correct shape (especially if your top lip is uneven or has lost definition so fades into skin) as well as add fullness.Try: ELES Long Wear Lipliner Want more makeup tips? shrink pores fast

5 ways to effectively reduce your pores

by Jo Boyden on Aug 03 2020
If you suffer from uneven skin tone or your enlarged pores appear to be a permanent feature on your face, we feel you.Believe it or not, many of us are as obsessed with our pore size, as we are with skin ageing! But why is it some of us suffer from large pores? And how can you shrink them fast?As we age, our body produces less Elastin and Collagen and without these two, our skin becomes much less supple and starts to sag. It’s the collagen in our skin which actually strengthens the walls of our pores, making them tighter, so when this breaks down with age our pores become enlarged! And to make matters worse, when these enlarged pores become clogged with oil and dead skin cells, blackhead and whiteheads may form. When bacteria comes in contact with these two, a pimple is born! So something which we thought was associated with teenage years can return to haunt us when we hit our 30’s and 40’s +!While your pore size is genetic (thank you parents!) and therefore you can’t alter its structure, the good news is there are a number of tips and treatments you can live by, which will help not only reduce pore size but leave you with smooth and even skin too! Introduce an exfoliating cleanser And not just any old exfoliator, one formulated with AHA’s (Alpha Hydroxy Acids) such as Citric Acid, Glycolic Acid and Lactic Acid, and/or BHA’s (Beta Hydroxy Acids) such as Salicylic acid. These are the holy grail of ingredients when it comes to penetrating and cleaning out your clogged pores, and clogged pores look bigger, fact. So by unblocking them you are already halfway there in terms of reducing their size. While all four acids exfoliate on a cellular level, Glycolic, Citric and Lactic works on a more surface level to brighten and smooth your skin, whereas Salicylic Acid penetrates much deeper to effectively remove dead skin cells clogged in pores. For those who are more prone to pimples, we highly recommend Pevonia’s Clarigel Exfoliating Cleanser. Formulated with both Citric and Salicylic Acid, it delivers intensive cleansing for problematic skin, gently removing impurities and rendering skin clear, clean and smooth. For those with enlarged pores we are loving Vie Colletion’s Renewing Exfoliating Cream. Designed to make the skin look renewed, radiant and youthful (yes please!) it smoothes away roughness while dramatically reducing large pores appearance! Use a skin primer A good skin primer will become your lifeline if you are prone to oily skin. Not only will it stop your foundation from sliding off your face quite literally, it’ll keep your base smooth while reducing the appearance of pores (and fine lines!)I’ve tried many a primer in my time but as a sufferer of oily skin and pores on the, let’s say slightly larger side! My go-to is the ELES Pore Perfecting Face Primer. It’s oil-free (of course), perfectly lightweight and seems to combat shine almost instantly. It contains a natural Dermat Complex which enables it to absorb oil and effectively reduce pore size in one hit. Wear sunscreen daily You hear this time and time again but we are serious. Do it. The number one cause of premature skin ageing is the sun. The less we wear sunscreen the sooner our collagen will break down causing skin to sag and pores to expand! Whether you choose to use a daily moisturiser or foundation with SPF is up to you, but using a sunscreen is paramount. We are in love with ELES Cosmetics’ best-selling Liquid Powder Mineral Foundation SPF 15, Free of pore-clogging oils, this silky, mineral-enriched liquid foundation with broad-spectrum sun protection, glides on velvety smooth but sets to a soft powder finish. It's ideal for all skin types even those with really oily skin and perfects your complexion while protecting against future damage. Opt for a pore perfecting moisturiser Yes it’s a thing! If you aren’t already using one, you simply must now. Formulated to quite literally refine pores for a smoother, flawless complexion free of shine you won’t believe the results. Our go-to is Pevonia’s Age Correction Micro-Pores Refine Cream. It’s a mattifying treatment cream which reduces oil production and pore size, while providing long-lasting hydration at the same time. Give retinol a go Hailed THE anti-ageing ingredient of the skincare world, retinol is known to not only slow down the signs of ageing (as a result of its ability to increase your skin’s collagen production) but also simultaneously decrease oil production which leads to smoother skin, fewer breakouts and tighter pores! If you haven’t before now, introducing a retinol cream at night will be a game changer for your skin, just be sure to opt for a more gentle retinol cream and slowly introduce it into your skincare routine as some can be a little sensitive to it at first, but the wait is soo worth it we promise! We highly recommend the Medicalia L Retinol Smoothing Cream. Combining Retinol with Glycolic and Lactic Acids (ah yes those two faithful pore perfecting acids again!) it is a must for resurfacing and regenerating skin for a smoother brighter appearance! To understand more about retinol read our guide to the best anti-ageing ingredient.
Highlighter like a pro

How to Apply Highlighter like a Pro

by Jo Boyden on Nov 15 2019
Whether you want dewy skin or a super-shimmery glow, here is everything you need to know about applying your highlighter like a professional. Firstly though, it’s important to remember; less is more. It only takes one swipe too many to go from a my-skin-but-better kind of glow to being schnitzelled in glitter! Follow these five steps to avoid the latter: 1 - Prep Your Skin The reason we use highlighting is to make our skin look healthy and glowy – as if you just came out of a yoga class and downed a litre or two of water. So the most important step in achieving healthy, hydrated skin is with great skin prep. Don’t panic, you don’t need to do a 10-Step Korean Skin Routine. Keep it simple; cleanse your face, exfoliate with a gentle scrub, we love the Pevonia Gentle Exfoliating Cleanser and then apply a hydrating moisturiser and sunscreen, skip the moisturiser if your sunscreen is a multi-tasking one such as the ELES Luminous Defence Brightening Day Protection 50. If you like to use a makeup primer pat on a thin layer of that too. 2 - Apply Your Foundation Foundation is not a must and you may prefer to skip this step or apply a BB Cream, CC Cream, Tinted Moisturiser or even just a Concealer on the flaws. Whatever your preference the goal is to even the skin tone out to your desired level. If its evening and you want to amp up the glow then mix a few drops of a liquid highlighter into your base before applying it to your skin. ELES Liquid Illuminator is ideal for this. Finish by bouncing a damp Pro-Blender Sponge all over your skin, it’ll make your skin look fresh and dewy. 3 - Choose Your Highlighter Formula Now that your base is set, you’re ready for the fun part…choosing your highlighter! Finding the right level of shimmer can be a little tricky though, so here are some pointers: A creamy highlighter can be applied before or after foundation. A powder formula, on the other hand, is better applied as the last step in your makeup routine. Liquid highlighters are better for mixing with foundations or other bases, they have a tendency to break up the foundation underneath it during application. Another consideration is the shade, is it warm or cool? It’s imperative to find a good match if you want your highlighter to look natural, or simply go for a neutral shade that suits everyone such as the ELES Stick Illuminator. 4 - Pick the Right Highlighter Applicator Choosing the right applicator depends on three things: the formula, the intensity you want, and where you are applying it. Generally creams and sticks are best applied with your fingers (the warmth of your hands helps to melt the product into the skin), while powders can be applied either with a brush or a sponge. For the lightest coverage, use a brush with thin, scattered bristles, like a fan brush. For more shimmer payoff, use a denser brush, like a tapered or stippling brush. And for the most pigment payoff, use a dampened beauty sponge. When applying the product in smaller areas (your lips, nose, or eyes), use a small, compact tool, like a pencil brush, for the most precise placement. 5 - Apply It to the High Points Highlighting is basically the opposite of contouring. The goal here is to bring the high points of your face - the tops of your cheekbones, along your brow bones, the top of your cupid’s bow, and down the bridge of your nose forward and make them really stand out. Word of advice: Avoid your T-zone (your forehead, middle of your cheeks, and chin) since it's naturally oily and prone to excess shine (any extra shimmer can bring you into 80’s territory). For larger areas, like your cheekbones, use your brush to sweep your highlighter in a windshield-wiper motion over the skin. If you prefer to use a sponge, you can dampen it with a setting spray and use it to bounce or press highlighter onto the skin. For smaller spaces, like the inner corners of your eyes, your cupid’s bow, and the tip of your nose, use your small pointed brush to press the product exactly where you want it, and blend it out with your finger.

10 makeup mistakes you could well be making

by Jo Boyden on Jul 18 2019
We are forever on the quest to achieving that perfect makeup look and hey experimenting on the way can be fun, but with the many tips and techniques being sold to us on the daily it’s hard to know if you’re acing your makeup or simply making mistakes. Well, we are here to help! Below are 10 of the most common makeup mistakes being made every day and how to well simply get it right! Pulling the area around your eye to make the perfect wing Yes yes, even I used to do this and then I learnt how BAD it was for my eyes, think skin ageing and fine lines due to the breakdown of elasticity! And let’s not forget you can easily end up with a horribly uneven line. And so now this; I use a post-it note! Yes, you heard that right, however you could, in theory, use any piece of folded paper, card or similar to achieve the same effect. Now no more cotton buds and re-application, I nail the perfect winged eye every single day (love me a winged eye!) Applying your lippie to dry lips This is a definite no no, as your lipstick won’t apply evenly, it’ll seep into your lip lines making your lips appear VERY dry and in some cases, they’ll even look a little on the crusty side, attractive right?! Instead, be sure to ‘prep’ your lips. Some people love to apply a little foundation to the lips as they believe it helps hold the lipstick in place for longer (much like the effect of a lip primer) but I personally think this dries out your lips even more! Instead, use a chapstick or lip balm and let it soak in. After a few minutes blot any excess and apply your favourite lipstick colour. See how it glides on effortlessly and evenly, will last longer and there won’t be a crusty lip in sight! Testing foundation shades on the back of your hand Yes, many do this but are they walking away with the correct shade for their complexion? The back of your hands tends to be darker than the skin on your face so it’s best to trial a few shades on both your jawline and neck. Just remember though your face tends to get much more sun exposure than your neck so you really want to find a foundation shade that matches both areas when blended into the skin. Applying your makeup with the wrong tools The key to natural-looking makeup lies in mastering the art of blending. Makeup that isn’t blended well can look heavy and imperfect. Get yourself armed with a few good brushes and a BeautyBlender, these tools will stand you in good stead and the beauty blender will enable you to reach every contour of your face. It is meant to be used damp, allowing for a flawless application and ensuring that makeup never looks heavy! Applying the wrong shade of eyeliner to your lower lash line Let’s face it black is the most popular eyeliner shade on the market but is it a one size fits all? No! If like me, you have a light complexion and blonde hair it’s actually advisable to use a brown liner, at least on the bottom lash line. Black can end up looking quite harsh and instead of opening up your eyes (after all who doesn’t want large doll-like eyes!) it can make them look smaller. It’s also a great idea to follow with a nude pencil or what’s known as a Waterline Liner. This will help open up your eyes and make them look wider! Incorrect lip liner application We all want to achieve bigger, luscious lips, but the worst thing you can do is draw a sharp line around your lips with lip liner to outline them. A lip liner is meant to define your lips, not just create a border around them! Instead, simply draw a soft outline and then use the lip liner to blend and fill in your lips, this will also act as an adhesive to help your lipstick stay in place for longer! Overloading on foundation powder Face powder, when used correctly and frugally can be a fantastic makeup staple (I have been I’m in love with the ELES Mineral Powder Foundation for years!) however, no matter your skin type, too much face powder can actually age you! That’s right, it can highlight fine lines and wrinkles instead of helping to conceal them! It’s best to use it sparingly – on your t-zone, or for quick touch-up’s, just make sure you opt for a lightweight powder! Sporting statement lips and dramatic eyeshadow together Who doesn’t love a beautiful bold lip? But if you are sporting dramatic eyes keep your lips nude or neutral to balance things out. And if you’re feeling the statement lips vibe, keep your eye makeup natural. Experimenting with makeup colours can be so much fun but remember the “less is more” rule to avoid looking overdone! Applying your blush incorrectly A blush applied correctly will help elongate your face, give you high cheekbones and make your face appear slimmer. However, apply it incorrectly and you could either wind up looking like a clown or someone suffering from rosacea. To nail it, using an angled blush brush, lightly apply a complementary shade of blush to the apples of your cheeks then sweep upwards towards your temples and ears. Forgetting a vital step – prepping your skin If you haven’t prepped your skin with your faithful moisturiser before applying your foundation, chances are your skin will look and feel dry. Plus makeup tends to stick to dry areas on the skin making it appear patchy. It’ll even seep into fine lines and wrinkles accentuating them! For best results apply your moisturiser, wait five minutes for it so properly absorb and then move onto your foundation.

Curious to find out what our top 9 favourites are? Read on and use as you will! For flawless foundation coverage Oh, hail the BeautyBlender! “If you look in any makeup artist’s kit, it’s almost guaranteed you will find a BeautyBlender. This revolutionary makeup sponge’s shape allows you to reach every contour of your face. It is meant to be used damp, allowing for a flawless application and ensuring that makeup never looks heavy.” Liane Scior, Creator ELES Cosmetics Mastering the under-eye concealer application Warm your concealer on your hand before applying. "I swipe concealer onto the back of my hand first, then tap it on under the eyes," Sir John says. "This thins out the consistency a little so it looks more lived-in, more like a second skin." Sir John, Celebrity Makeup Artist to Beyoncé To perfect the natural looking glow “Dip your make-up brush into a little bit of water before you apply highlighter to your face. The smooth, creamy formula glides across the skin like a liquid highlight but sets like a powder and captures the light beautifully. A gorgeous highlight can instantly lift dull looking skin for a natural looking glow!" Charlotte Tilbury, Celebrity Makeup ArtistWhat's more, a damp brush ensures you won't pick up too much product, it’ll simply create an effortless touch of shimmer, we know as we’ve given this a go! For natural looking brows “Instead of brushing your brows up and away before you start filling them in, brush them down. When you fill in your brows this way, you’re able to clearly see the maximum shape of your eyebrow and the highest point of your arch. Try it this way and you’ll avoid the overdrawn, pencilled-in look”. Kate Lee, Celebrity Makeup Artist Achieving longer lasting mascara “If your mascara is dried out, but not yet expired, add a few eye or saline drops into the tube and it’s ready to go again”. Rae Morris, World Renowned Makeup Artist and Author No more under-eye mascara smudging To clean up shadow fall out and mascara smudge under the eyes, “Use a plain sponge and makeup primer instead of makeup remover. This picks up the shadow and leaves the concealer.” Monika Blunder, Celebrity Makeup Artist For the perfect lip application every time “Apply a lip balm on while doing the rest of your make up, and when it comes time to do your lips, wipe it off and apply your lipstick as normal. It’s also not good to apply a layer of foundation on your lips before applying lipstick, or you’ll end up with a big ugly white crust around your mouth.” Rae Morris, World Renowned Makeup Artist and Author For stand out lips “Any time I'm putting a bright lip on anyone, I always buff a little concealer around the mouth with a loose shadow brush, by doing this, the area around the mouth acts like a frame for your lipstick—really showcasing that colour and not letting it feather.” Kirin Bhatty, Celebrity Makeup Artist To settle and set your makeup “To keep your skin looking like skin and not like makeup, finish with a mist. I always use a mist because it helps settle the makeup, making your skin look less makeupy." Afton Williams, Film Makeup Artist
