The best pore-refining products according to you

The best pore-refining products according to you

by Jo Boyden on Apr 02 2026
We’ve talked a lot recently about the best products for sensitive skin, how to calm rosacea and how to strengthen a compromised skin barrier. Well now it’s time to talk pores! After all we all have them (even those people we swear have the most ‘perfect’ skin!) But when pores appear enlarged, congested or simply more visible that we’d like, they can really affect how smooth and refined our complexion looks. The truth is, we can’t actually physically ‘shrink’ our pores, but we can cleverly minimise their appearance with the right products! From clarifying cleansers to targeted serums, pore-refining formulas are designed to help keep skin looking clearer, smoother and more balanced. Keep reading to discover the 4 pore-refining products that consistently deliver visible results, according to you!   Firstly, why do your pores look enlarged in the first place? Pore size is largely genetic, so you definitely can’t shrink them permanently,  but you absolutely can minimise their appearance, and consistently so. The main culprits behind enlarged looking pores are excess sebum (oil) production, congestion and dead skin cell build-up sitting inside the pore. Loss of collagen and elasticity around the pore walls as skin ages is a big contributor too, as is sun damage. Targeting these at the right step in your routine (cleansing, treating, and refining) is the key to seeing real consistent results!   The pore-refining products you (and we!) love   Medicalia Clarifying Cleanser Using a good cleanser when pores are clogged with oil, makeup and debris is key to refining their appearance and this clarifying cleanser is a stand out for oily and congested skin! It works to deeply cleanse and purify the skin without over-stripping, helping to regulate excess oil while keeping the complexion balanced. With consistent use, pores appear clearer and less visible, and skin looks noticeably brighter and more refined overall too! “I have very oily skin and this product has helped so much. My pores are not just visibly smaller but almost un-noticable. I have had comments on how bright my skin looks lately so this tells me im on a winner!” - Lauri B Pevonia Gentle Exfoliating Cleanser If your skin tends to be sensitive but you still want that smooth, refined finish, this cleanser is a fantastic option. It gently exfoliates while cleansing, helping to remove buildup and refine the look of pores without causing irritation. Skin is left feeling soft, smooth, and perfectly balanced, never tight or irritated. “I have some sensitivity in my skin and this is the only product that I have used that does not hurt or inflame my skin. It has also made my skin so soft and minimized my pore size...AWESOME” - Tessa M Pevonia Age-Correction Micro-Pores Bio-Active Serum Once your skin is properly cleansed, targeted serums are where the real transformation happens and the Pevonia Age Correction Micro Pores Bio Active Serum is one that realy does exactly what it promises! Designed specifically to minimise the appearance of enlarged pores, it works by helping to regulate oil production while refining and smoothing the skin’s surface. It’s lightweight, effective, and perfect for areas where pores tend to be more visible (think nose, cheeks, and T-zone). “Wonderful product, does exactly what it says. Minimises large pores and reduces oily skin around my nose and cheeks. Highly recommend!”- Rhiannon K Phytomer Emergence Even Skin Tone Refining Serum If uneven texture and post-acne scarring are part of your concern, this serum is a must! It works to smooth, refine, and improve overall skin texture while helping to create a more even, polished-looking complexion. Over time, pores appear less noticeable as the skin becomes smoother and more uniform.  Honestly this is the kind of product that can earn a permanent spot in your routine when you start seeing visible improvements in your skin texture and clarity. “I first received this as a sample and decided to purchase it because I saw a huge difference in the texture of my skin. I now use it daily and would not be without it. I am in my 30s and have large pores with acne scaring. This product makes my skin so much smoother and beautiful.” – June Expert tips for minimising the look of your enlarged pores Remember to also keep skin clean so this means daily cleansing morning and night. A build up of oil and debris in your pores makes them look so much larger! Even if your skin is sensitive, exfoliating is a must to keep texture smooth and pores minimized. Never skip on your daily moisturiser, dehydrated skin can actually exaggerate your pores. Be consistent with your pore refining routine and never skip on your SPF!   When it comes to your pores, it’s not about trying to eliminate then which is impossible! It’s about keeping them clean, clear and refined! With the right combination of cleansing products and targeted treatments you will notice a big improvement in skin texture and the appearance of your pore size!
The soothing serum that reduces breakouts overnight: Real reviews

The soothing serum that reduces breakouts overnight: Real reviews

by Jo Boyden on Feb 26 2026
Finding a breakout treatment when you have sensitive skin we know can feel next to impossible, and most "acne" products are packed with ingredients that leave your skin feeling stripped, dry, and even more irritated than before! Well, if you’ve been searching for a way to clear your complexion while keeping your skin barrier happy and hydrated, you’re in the right place! There is a "miracle" ingredient from the beehive that is changing the game for sensitive, breakout-prone skin and we have it in a serum! Keep reading to find out all about “propolis” and the serum BC customers can’t get enough off! Real results, real reviews from customers who are nothing short of obsessed!   So, what exactly is Propolis? Propolis is one of nature's most powerful healing ingredients, and if you're not already using it on your breakouts, you're about to wonder how you ever managed without it! It’s a sticky, resinous substance that bees create to protect their hives and has been used for centuries in traditional medicine for its remarkable antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and skin-healing properties, oh and it’s packed with antioxidants too! And when it's formulated into a serum? It becomes one of the most effective overnight breakout treatments you'll ever try! Not harsh. Not drying. Just genuinely healing, soothing, and fast-acting making it the perfect solution for those with sensitives or reactive skin.   The product we are all obsessed with Pevonia Soothing Propolis Concentrate This isn't just any serum! It’s a high-performance concentrate designed specifically for skin that needs that little extra T.L.C! Most breakout treatments work by doing one of two things, drying out the pimple or killing bacteria. And while that sounds logical in theory, they can often leave your skin irritated, flaky, red, and sometimes even worse than when you started! Pevonia’s Soothing Propolis Concentrate is different! Instead of attacking your skin, this naturally soothing antibacterial serum supports it! Instead of stripping and drying, it soothes and heals. Instead of causing irritation, it actively reduces inflammation. In fact, it’ll help your skin actually heal faster and more gently than anything else you’ve tried! It will also help regulate any excess oil you might be producing! Support clearer pores, calm visible redness, strengthen the skin barrier and reduce the likelihood of future breakouts. And the result? Breakouts that heal faster, look less angry, and fade without leaving behind the redness or marks that traditional treatments often cause. It is a micro-emulsified serum, which is a fancy way of saying it’s formulated to absorb instantly and deeply. It targets micro-inflammation (the redness you see before a pimple fully forms) and helps to decongest the skin without ever feeling heavy or greasy. It’s light, it smells divine (a subtle, natural aroma), and it’s become the "go-to" for those dealing with hormonal breakouts, irritation, redness, sensitivity and general congestion!   How it works overnight While we sleep, our skin goes into repair mode. By applying the Propolis Concentrate in the evening, you’re giving your skin the exact tools it needs to reduce swelling and redness during its peak healing hours. Most users report that by the time they wake up, the "anger" of a breakout has significantly subsided, and the skin feels cool, calm, and hydrated. Don’t just take our word for it though! The real proof is in the results of the BC customers!   What BC customers are saying “I can't go a day without this! The Soothing Propolis Concentrate brightens my skin immediately giving it an amazing glow. I use it every night and it must work miracles overnight because my skin looks flawless and bumps are reduced significantly by morning. This is truly a remarkable product, after trying sooooooo many antibiotics, creams and skincare products I have finally found a product to keep my breakouts at an all time low.” – Shelley M “I have problems with adult acne as well as having sensitive skin. This product helped calm my skin down as well as reduce my acne and made my skin feel really soft again. A little goes a long way too” – Laura  “Soothing Propolis Concentrate! I love this product, i bought it while i was pregnant and had severe hormonal acne and it seemed to calm and soothe my skin and reduced the "angriness" of my skin! Since having baby I have continued to use this product and it has since reduced my pore size and also made my skin more evenly toned. It glides on smoothly when applying to skin and a little goes a very long way. So the price is only minuscule when you think about how long this product will last! I recommend to anyone who has skin problems as it also contains anti microbial properties and antibacterial to keep those yukky breakouts to a minimum!” – Melinda  “This product has completely reduced my breakouts and makes my skin feel nourished after every use, I am so glad I decided to try it.” - Kelly O “My skin is hypersensitive and extractions during facials were extremely painful for me until I started using this propolis. I use it every morning and besides the calming effect and reduction of redness, it has helped me to control breakouts and my skin looks more even. Highly recommended!” – Arlen C    Used consistently, this serum helps create a more balanced environment within the skin, meaning fewer flare-ups and faster recovery when breakouts do appear. Simply apply to clean skin once or twice daily, focusing on breakout-prone areas. Follow with a barrier-supporting moisturiser and SPF during the day.   Remember, breakouts don't have to take a week to heal. With the right treatment (one that soothes, heals, and supports your skin rather than stripping and irritating it) you can wake up to noticeably clearer, calmer skin. Propolis serum is that treatment. Natural, effective, gentle, and genuinely transformative, it's the overnight breakout solution that finally lives up to the promise!

Summer proof beauty: 10 makeup tips for makeup that lasts

Summer proof beauty: 10 makeup tips for makeup that lasts

by Jo Boyden on Dec 12 2025
Summer is well and truly under way with the hot weather we’ve had of late!  But hot, humid days don’t have to mean compromised makeup! With the right prep, formulas, and application techniques, you can create makeup that stays polished and in place! no matter how high the temperature gets! From long-wear bases to humidity-resistant hacks, these 10 pro-approved makeup tips will keep your summer makeup looking seamless all day long!   Tip 1. Start with a super clean canvas Makeup lasts longer on skin that’s clean, balanced, and free from excess oil.Use a gentle, non-stripping cleanser each morning to remove overnight sebum and prep your skin for smooth application. Tip 2. Change to moisturisers that suit the warmer weather Heavy creams and rich oils can make makeup slip faster in warm weather. So as much as you might love your trusty moisturiser it’s time to switch to lighter, gel or lotion textures that hydrate without leaving a greasy film. Focus on non-comedogenic formulas so your base sits smoothly and holds up better as the day goes on. Tip 3. Always let your skincare fully absorb Rushing from moisturiser straight to foundation is a recipe for slipping and pilling! While I know so many of us are time poor, if you want to prevent your makeup sliding off your face by mid-morning you need to give your skincare a couple of minutes to sink in before applying your makeup. This creates a more even canvas and helps your base adhere instead of sliding around on top. Tip 4. Use a primer Primer is your summer secret weapon I’m telling you! especially if you have oily or combination skin you’ll benefit from a mattifying or pore-perfecting formula, while normal to dry skin often prefers a hydrating but slightly tacky primer that grips makeup. Apply a thin layer where you get most shiny, then press foundation on top rather than rubbing. Tip 5. Choose long-wear and transfer-resistant formulas In hot weather, longevity matters more than full coverage. Look for long-wear or transfer-resistant foundations, tinted serums or tinted moisturisers that set down but still feel breathable. Waterproof mascaras, long-lasting brow products and budge-proof gel eyeliners also make a big difference in humidity! Tip 6. Apply thin layers and build slowly Thick layers of base are the first to crack, crease and melt. Instead, use sheer layers and build only where needed (around the nose, chin or blemishes). A light layer of a long-lasting formula wears far better than a heavy layer of anything, especially in the heat. Tip 7. Set strategically with powder You don’t need to mattify your entire face. Use a finely milled, translucent powder just on the areas prone to shine, typically the forehead, sides of the nose and chin. Press it in with a sponge or small brush rather than dusting; this helps lock products in without looking flat or cakey. Tip 8. Set with a long-lasting setting spray A good setting spray can act like a soft “seal” for your makeup. Mist your face after finishing your routine, and for extra staying power, lightly spray your sponge or brush before tapping on foundation or concealer. This helps fuse the layers together and improves longevity. Tip 9. Blot skin! Don’t pile on more product When shine appears, reach for blotting papers or a clean tissue to gently lift excess oil before adding any powder. Adding layer after layer of product over sweat and oil can lead to caking and separation. Blot first, then, if needed, tap a small amount of powder just where you need it. Tip 10. Choose lip and eye products that can take the heat Glosses and creamy liners can smear quickly in warm weather. Opt for long-wear lip pencils (gel is best), that fade more gracefully, and go for waterproof or smudge-resistant liners and mascaras.  Bonus tip from the pros Before applying primer or foundation, lightly spritz your makeup sponge or a clean, flat foundation brush with a cooling mist or place it in the fridge for a few minutes. Applying your base with a cold tool helps to temporarily constrict pores and calm the skin, which improves the longevity and seamless blend of your foundation.   So there you have it! summer makeup doesn’t have to melt! With the right prep, the right formulas, and these heat-proof tips, you can enjoy flawless, glowing, stay-all-day beauty no matter what!
How to make your pores look smaller in 7 simple steps

How to make your pores look smaller in 7 simple steps

by Jo Boyden on Jul 04 2025
Pores. We all have them, after all they are crucial for healthy functioning skin! But for some of us, they can appear a little more prominent than we’d like! In fact, enlarged pores are a very common skincare concern, and while you can’t eliminate them (they’re essential after all!) the great news is you can definitely make them look a whole lot smaller! Want to know how? Keep reading for the best routine to minimise your pores and achieve a smoother, flawless complexion too!   Firstly, why do your pores look larger than you’d like? If your pores are looking larger than usual, there are several common reasons behind it. 1. Excess Sebum (oil) production This is one of the most common reasons for enlarged pores. Each pore contains a sebaceous gland that produces oil (sebum) to keep your skin moisturised. When your skin produces too much oil, it can mix with dead skin cells and other debris, clogging the pore. This buildup stretches the pore walls, making the opening appear larger. This is particularly common in people with oily or combination skin. 2. Genetics Unfortunately, your genes play a significant role in pore size! If your parents or close relatives have naturally larger pores, you're more likely to have them too. This is simply due to inherited skin structure and oil gland activity (thanks family!) 3. Ageing! As we age our skin loses collagen and elastin, the proteins that provide firmness and support. When the skin around the pores loses its elasticity, it can sag and stretch, making the pores appear wider and more open. 4. Sun damage UV rays break down collagen and elastin, similar to the natural ageing process. This damage weakens the skin's support structure, leading to less firm skin and consequently, larger-looking pores. Sun exposure can also thicken the skin, which can make pores more visible. 5. Clogged pores Congested pores look a while lot more noticeable that pores that aren’t! This is because a mix of dead skin cells, excess oil, makeup, and dirt can get trapped inside the pore. This accumulation creates a plug (a blackhead if exposed to air and oxidised, or a whitehead if closed off), stretching the pore opening and making it appear enlarged. 6. Improper skincare Skipping exfoliation or not cleansing properly can lead to buildup and visible pores.   The 7 steps to minimising your pores   1. Double cleanse daily Our pores often appear larger when clogged with oil, sweat, dirt, and makeup so effective cleansing really is the first essential step to minimising their appearance. Double cleansing helps remove every trace of grime, without stripping your skin. It also prevents a build-up, which can stretch pore walls. Simply start with an oil-based cleanser (we LOVE the ELES Transformation Cleansing Oil) to melt away makeup and sunscreen, then follow with a gentle water-based cleanser like Phytomer’s Souffle Marin Cleansing Foaming Cream to detoxify, decongest and purify your pores. Formulated with marine botanicals like OLIGOMER® and marine spring water, it helps soothe, remineralise, and maintain skin balance while gently but effectively removing any trace of remaining makeup, excess oil and impurities. “This is an excellent cleanser for my skin that is normal to oily in the warmer summer months. It has a mild exfoliant in it, lactic acid, that helps keep my pores purified. I am very happy with it.” – Brianna (BC customer) And for the month of July, when you purchase the best-selling Phytomer Expert Youth Wrinkle Plumping Cream (one of my personal favourites) you’ll receive this powerhouse cleanser for FREE) Top tip: Make sure you avoid harsh cleansers that strip your skin, they can actually increase oil production and worsen the look of pores.   2. Exfoliate (but don’t overdo it!) I’m sure we all know regular exfoliation will help keep our skin’s surface smooth and clear but did you ever consider that by not adding this simple step into your skincare routine once or twice weekly, dead skin cells can settle into your pores making them look larger and uneven! So, if you are dealing with enlarged pores and aren’t exfoliating as you should be, start now! If your skin tends to naturally be on the more combination or oily side opt for chemical exfoliants formulated with glycolic acid (AHA), salicylic acid (BHA), or lactic acid (AHA) to keep pores clear. If your skin is more on the sensitive side, you’ll want to choose a good enzyme exfoliator (like papaya or pineapple-based formulas) as these are a more gentle, non-invasive option. The enzymes literally dissolve the dead skin, so no harsh exfoliation in sight! Just be sure to not over exfoliate as you can risk irritation and inflaming your pores! 1-3 times a week is sufficient dependant on how sensitive your skin is. For more on exfoliation, the different types and the best option for your skin click here.  3. Use a Pore-Refining Toner or Essence Toners or essences with ingredients like niacinamide, witch hazel, or zinc help refine texture, tighten the appearance of pores and balance oil production. We love Phytomer Oligomarine Flawless-Skin Tonic, formulated with niacinamide, witch hazel and zinc, it tones the skin, tightens the pores and brightens the complexion! 4. Apply a clay mask weekly Clay masks, especially those with kaolin or bentonite, are brilliant for drawing out excess oil and impurities from pores, leaving them looking tighter and less visible. Apply a clay mask once or twice a week for a deep-cleaning boost like Phytomer Citylife Radiance Reviving Mask with Clay. Combining 100% natural red and white clays, blue microalgae, red algae and a comprehensive depolluting complex of 3 marine sugars, it reveals luminosity, radiance and refined pores after just one application. 5. Target with a serum Serums are concentrated treatments designed to go deeper into the skin, making them ideal for refining texture and targeting pore visibility. When it comes to minimising, pores look for serums formulated with retinol, niacinamide and peptides. These ingredients not only boost cell turnover and support collagen production but help unclog pores, smooth uneven skin tone and ensure skin looks firmer and tighter! Try Vie Collection’s Vita B3 Concentrated solution, packed with niacinamide to visibly tighten pores, smooth texture, and brighten overall tone. What’s more when you purchase a selected Vie Collection Moisturiser this July, you’ll receive the Vita B3 serum for FREE!  6. Make sure you moisturise daily, even if your skin is oily! Dehydrated skin overcompensates with more oil, which can stretch and clog pores. The right moisturiser can help balance and smooth skin. If enlarged pores are a problem make sure you opt for lightweight, non-comedogenic moisturisers formulated with hyaluronic acid, glycerin, or squalane and specifically designed to help pores. Remember well-hydrated skin helps maintain elasticity and prevents pores from appearing larger. 7. Protect with SPF (Every. Single. Day.) We all know sun damage breaks down collagen and elastin, but did you know that this in turns causes our pores to sag and look larger over time! Wearing an SPF daily really will help maintain your skin’s firmness and youthfulness. Just be sure to look for non-comedogenic formulas and mineral sunscreens with zinc oxide or titanium dioxide if you have sensitive or acne-prone skin! And use it every morning even on cloudy days, to protect your skin and keep pores looking refined!   Additional expert tips As well as following a daily skincare routine, there are a few additional things you need to ensure you do/don’t do as well! 1. Avoid squeezing or picking at your pores as this can cause irritation and even scaring! 2. Use a pore perfecting primer before applying makeup. A good primer will become your lifeline if you are prone to enlarged pores. Not only will it stop your foundation from sliding off your face quite literally, it’ll keep your base smooth while reducing the appearance of pores (and fine lines!) 3. Avoid using heavy, pore-clogging makeup, try mineral makeup instead!   A consistent routine can dramatically refine your pores appearance over time. By keeping them clean, exfoliated, hydrated, and protected, your skin will look smoother, more even, and radiant we promise!
Exfoliation: Enzymes, peels & scrubs - what’s the difference?

Exfoliation: Enzymes, peels & scrubs - what’s the difference?

by Jo Boyden on Jun 27 2025
Ever felt overwhelmed trying to choose between a scrub, a peel, or an enzyme exfoliator? You’re not alone! Exfoliation is a key step in any skincare routine, after all it’s the not-so-secret essential to achieving radiant, smooth skin! But with so many options, we know it’s easy to get confused when it comes to finding the best option for your skin type. That’s why we are here to help! Keep reading as we break down the benefits and the differences between chemical, physical and enzyme exfoliators and which is the right one for you.   Chemical vs. Physical vs. Enzymatic Exfoliation: What’s the Difference? Chemical Exfoliators Chemical exfoliators use active ingredients like AHAs (alpha hydroxy acids) and BHAs (beta hydroxy acids) to dissolve the bonds between dead skin cells, encouraging them to shed naturally. Instead of scrubbing, they work on a cellular level, revealing fresher, brighter skin beneath. Key types: AHAs (e.g. Glycolic Acid, Lactic Acid) These are water-soluble acids that target the skin's surface. Best for dry, dull, or ageing skin. BHAs (e.g. Salicylic Acid) Oil-soluble and penetrate deeper into pores, making them ideal for oily or acne-prone skin. Who are chemical exfoliators best for? Dullness and uneven tone Fine lines and sun damage Congested or acne-prone skin Try: Vie Collection Night Peel Progressive Resurfacing Cream This overnight treatment is formulated with glycolic acid, an AHA (alpha hydroxy acid), to gently exfoliate the skin while you sleep. It works by dissolving the bonds between dead skin cells, promoting cell turnover, and revealing a smoother, more radiant complexion. Suitable for those looking to address dullness, uneven texture, or signs of ageing. “I just turned 63 and decided to spend a bit more money on a night peel product. I saw that this product and thought I would give it a try. I did and couldn't be happier! My face looks smoother, definitely softer and any imperfections are gone. I only use a little bit so I know it will last a long time. Love it and will definitely buy again.” – Nicole Enzyme Exfoliators Enzyme exfoliators are the unsung heroes for sensitive skin. Derived from natural sources like papaya (papain), pineapple (bromelain) or pumpkin, these enzymes gently break down the keratin in dead skin cells dissolving them without disrupting the healthy layers underneath. No harsh abrasion in sight! Who are enzyme exfoliators best for? Sensitive or reactive skin Redness or inflammation Rosacea-prone skin types Try: Phytomer Vegetal Exfoliant with Natural Enzymes If you are a sufferer of sensitive skin, we highly recommend this very gentle enzyme exfoliant. It’s a soft exfoliant for even the most sensitive or rosacea prone skin and uses natural enzymes to encourage cell turnover without scrubbing or irritating skin. “I have the most sensitive skin, so I can’t use exfoliants that contain microbeads or scrubs…this is a great alternative. It sloughs off all of the dead skin cells without ever irritating my skin! I use it once a week at the minimum, and it keeps my face glowing and smooth. It’s the most wonderful exfoliant ever!” – Sarah R  Physical Exfoliators These are the gritty scrubs and tools you’ll likely be most familiar with. Think Jojoba beads, microbeads, sugar scrubs, or exfoliating brushes. They help to deeply cleanse and smooth the skin manually sloughing off dead skin through friction. Best For: Normal to oily skin types Areas with rough texture (like elbows, knees, or back) Quick skin smoothing results Try: Pevonia Gentle Exfoliating Cleanser This creamy cleanser combines natural jojoba beads with soothing ingredients like chamomile, calendula, and aloe vera. The jojoba beads provide gentle manual exfoliation, effectively removing dead skin cells and impurities without causing irritation. Ideal for all skin types, including sensitive skin, it leaves the skin feeling soft, smooth, and refreshed “This is the BEST gentle exfoliator I have ever used. I have been using Pevonia for 5 years plus. I have sensitive skin and this exfoliator is perfect for my skin type. HIGHLY recommend.” – Annalisa BC pro tips for safe exfoliation Now you know which type of exfoliant will be best for you, you need to make sure you are doing it right! Make sure you; Don’t overdo it – 2–3 times a week is enough for most skin types! If your skin is sensitive just once will suffice. Listen to your skin – If you notice redness, tightness or flaking, give your skin a break. Always moisturise after – Exfoliation leaves your skin more vulnerable, so replenish with a hydrating serum or cream immediately after. SPF is non-negotiable – Especially when using chemical exfoliants!

Breaking out at 40 and beyond? How to fight adult acne

Breaking out at 40 and beyond? How to fight adult acne

by Jo Boyden on Mar 14 2025
Waking to breakouts when you thought acne was behind you? Feeling frustrated but not sure what to do? Believe it or not, adult acne is more common than you think, and it can be just as frustrating, if not more, than those pesky teenage pimples we all endured! From hormonal changes and stress to skincare mistakes and environmental factors, there are a number of reasons why blemishes can return in adulthood. The good news? With the right targeted skincare routine and lifestyle changes, you can achieve clear skin once again! Keep reading as we discuss what’s causing your breakouts and, more importantly, our expert approved tips and solutions on how to treat them!   Why you’re getting breakouts - the most common triggers for adult acne Unfortunately, adult acne can be caused by a number of factors, often different from the breakouts we experienced in our teens, so it’s important to try and identify your specific root cause. Everything from hormonal imbalances, stress, diet, and even the medication you might be taking can contribute to your breakouts. Here are the most common triggers:  1. Hormonal Imbalances If you are experiencing blemishes and acne in your 40’s and 50’s, chances are it could be to do with perimenopause and the menopause. And if you had a history of pimples and acne as a teenager, you’ll more likely to be susceptible to getting acne flare ups now too! Unfortunately, fluctuations in our hormones, particularly androgens (like testosterone), can increase oil production, this excess oil can then mix with bacteria, dead skin and debris leading to clogged pores and breakouts! This is why acne also often flares up around the menstrual cycle, and during pregnancy, as well as due to conditions like polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). 2. Stress When you're stressed, your body produces more cortisol, which can stimulate oil glands and worsen acne. Stress-induced inflammation can also slow healing, making breakouts last longer. 3. Skincare & Makeup products Using the wrong skincare or makeup or simply overloading your skin with it, can clog pores and trigger breakouts. Too many products, as well as heavy, oil-based, or comedogenic products can worsen acne, while harsh cleansers can strip your skin and in turn cause it to go into overdrive and overproduce oil, which is where the cycle comes into play!  4. Diet Some studies suggest that high-glycemic foods (like white bread, potatoes, rice, cereals), dairy, and processed sugars can trigger acne by increasing inflammation and oil production so if you are ingesting much of these foods it could be one reason for your increased blemishes! 5. Lifestyle It can be hard to get that 8-9 hours of sleep a night believe me! But lack of sleep, as well as other lifestyle choices like smoking and drinking alcohol and sugary drinks can and will affect your skin in one way or another and it’s usually through the increase in blemishes. 6. Environmental Factors Pollution, sweat, and even your phone screen or pillowcase can harbor bacteria that contribute to breakouts. Regularly cleaning your phone and changing pillowcases can help reduce bacteria exposure. 6. Medications Certain medications, including steroids, birth control pills, and antidepressants, can disrupt hormones or increase oil production, leading to breakouts. 7. Over-Exfoliating or Harsh Skincare Too much exfoliation or harsh acne treatments can strip the skin’s natural barrier, leading to more oil production and irritation, making acne worse instead of better!   How to treat breakouts and adult acne 1. Cleanse gently (but effectively!) Many people with acne-prone skin make the mistake of over-cleansing or using harsh scrubs, which can strip the skin and lead to even more breakouts. Instead, opt for a gentle cleanser with acne-fighting ingredients like salicylic acid. We highly recommend Hubislab A.C Clearing Purifying Cleansing Gel. It’s a soothing gel-based cleanser which has been especially formulated (salicylic acid and powerful antioxidant green tea) for congested and acne prone skin to completely but gently clear pores, removing makeup, dirt and grime from the skin without over-drying, all whilst protecting the skin against oxidative damage. 2. Don’t skimp on moisturiser It’s a common misconception that oily or acne-prone skin doesn’t need moisture! The truth is, when your skin is dehydrated it can actually produce even more oil to over compensate, leading to further breakouts, eek! You do need to be careful about the moisturisers you choose though! When looking for the best moisturisers for acne prone skin, you’ll want to choose lightweight, non-comedogenic moisturisers that hydrate without clogging pores, like the ProCorrective Clear-Control Moisturiser for balancing hydration and oil control. It’s carefully selected non-comedogenic (non-pore clogging) super skin-clearing, calming and hydrating ingredients (we are talking Zinc Chloride, Hydrolyzed Wheat Protein, Cinnamon, Thyme, Mallow, Witch Hazel, Tea Tree Extract, Niacinamide, Glycolic and Salicylic Acids, Microcitrus Australasica, a.k.a. Caviar Lime and Hyaluronic Acid!)combine to deeply target acne by rapidly clearing away blemishes and clogging, while moisturising and smoothing uneven texture. It’s so good! In fact the whole Pevonia ProCorrective line is outstanding for the management of adult acne! 3. Exfoliate regularly (but don’t overdo it!) Exfoliation is key to unclogging pores and preventing breakouts, but doing it daily can damage your skin barrier. Stick to gentle chemical exfoliants with AHAs or BHAs (like glycolic or salicylic acid) two times per week to keep your skin smooth and clear. We love Pevonia Enzymo Spherides Peeling Cream. Do not let the name ‘peeling cream’ put you off though! Papaya and Pineapple have been selected for their enzyme peeling action, an action that gently digests away impurities, sebum, toxins and the dead skin cells, instead of abrading or burning them off. So, it’s gentle, really gentle, and it’s effective too! Nothing makes skin feel cleaner, lighter or more purified than this jar of goodness and it’s easy to use! Simply apply a thin layer on cleansed skin, wet the fingertips with warm water, this will help to “wake up” the enzymes, then leave them to do their thing for 5-10 minutes, then rinse away.  4. Spot treat your skin When a breakout appears, resist the urge to squeeze it please! And yes, I know how tempting it can be, but squeezing spots can spread bacteria and exacerbate your acne! Instead, use a targeted spot treatment with ingredients like benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid, sulfur, or tea tree oil to reduce inflammation and speed up healing. 5. Manage your stress Easier said than done we know, but there are some amazing aids and coping mechanisms when it comes to stress. Try to give yourself a little “me” time. This might feel like an impossibility especially if you are a busy, working mum! But we are simply talking even a few minutes a day to soak in a bath, read your book, listen to a podcast, meditate, exercise or simply listen to music! Breathing exercises can also be game-changing and I know have seriously helped me! One of the main symptoms of perimenopause is anxiety and being in my mid 40’s I have definitely been hard hit. I find music and breathing has helped no end. I’m telling you just a little time out can make a noticeable difference in your skin’s clarity.   6. Choose your makeup wisely Heavy, oil-based foundations can clog pores and worsen acne so you’ll want to opt for non-comedogenic, breathable makeup formulas, and always remove your makeup before bed to prevent buildup and irritation! Mineral makeup is the best makeup for acne prone skin, its free from common irritants such as fragrances, preservatives, and synthetic dyes, making it less likely to cause breakouts or allergic reactions plus so many formulations are lightweight and breathable, so you literally feel like you aren’t wearing makeup (even though it will help conceal those blemishes) and will literally allow your inflamed skin to breathe and not be clogged! I know I am biased but I have been using ELES Mineral Makeup for YEARS. And I will never use anything else. I can hand on heart say their products have helped my skin, prevented me from getting spots even! I personally love the ELES Mineral Sheer Tint and ELES Mineral Powder Foundation, but the no. 1 ELES best-seller is the Liquid Powder Mineral Foundation, and the reviews speak volumes! All three products are mineral, filled to the brim with skin friendly, anti-ageing ingredients and do not ever clog pores! Brillant stuff. 7. Watch your diet If you are struggling with adult acne, you should try and cut down on high-glycemic foods which have been linked to acne flare-ups. Also try reducing your intake of processed sugars and dairy products. Instead eat a diet rich in antioxidants (like leafy greens, nuts, and berries) and healthy fats (like fish, avocado and unsalted nuts), and increase hydration to help balance skin. 8. Try to get enough sleep Sometimes getting that 7-9 hours of solid sleep a night can seem like an impossibility, I know! But sleep really is essential for skin health because it allows for cellular repair, collagen production, and hydration balance. During deep sleep, our body boosts blood flow to the skin, helping to reduce inflammation, prevent premature ageing, and promote a radiant complexion (crazy right?) 9. Stay kind to your skin and consistent with your routine From spots to adult acne, we know how frustrating breakouts can be! But constantly switching products can often make things worse! Remember to treat your skin with gentle, nourishing care and give products time to work their magic. Clear skin doesn’t happen overnight! Sticking to a consistent skincare routine with the right products for your skin type really is key to preventing breakouts in the long run.   By following these simple yet effective tips, you can take control of adult acne and enjoy a clearer, healthier complexion, we promise!

How to treat adult acne: The skincare line that actually works

by Jo Boyden on Jan 24 2025
Find yourself suddenly dealing with adult acne? The unexpected breakouts, stubborn spots, irritated skin? Believe me when I say you are not alone! Here at BC we get customers asking us why they might be suffering from acne in their 40’s and beyond all the time as well as the best solutions. Well, we can’t recommend enough a new (tried-and-tested by us) collection from Pevonia that tackles adult acne head-on while being kind to your skin! Whether your breakouts are stress-related, hormonal, or perhaps genetic, this routine will make a huge difference to your skin and your confidence! Cue Pevonia’s ProCorrective Line, a game-changing solution for tackling adult acne at its root!   Firstly, why are you suffering from adult acne? Adult acne can be incredibly frustrating, especially when you thought breakouts were a thing of the past! Unlike teenage breakouts though, adult acne often stems from a combination of factors from hormone changes to stress to genetics to pollution and more! Hormonal fluctuations often play a big part in adult acne though, whether it be during menstruation, pregnancy, perimenopause or menopause, this is because it can increase oil production leading to clogged pores which can trigger breakouts. Androgens, particularly testosterone, stimulate oil glands, worsening breakouts. These hormonal shifts also increase inflammation and disrupt the skin's barrier, making it more prone to bacterial overgrowth and persistent blemishes! Stress, which many of us adults can feel on a daily basis! Elevates cortisol levels, stimulating oil glands and worsening acne. And then there are the environmental factors like pollution or bacteria from touching your face which may clog pores, while certain skincare or makeup products can exacerbate the issue. Unfortunately what we eat and drink can also play a role, with high-glycemic foods and dairy potentially contributing! And then of course there are genetics (thanks parents!) and underlying medical conditions, such as hormonal imbalances or PCOS which can further increase the likelihood of adult acne. Eek!   Why Choose the Pevonia ProCorrective Line? Whatever your reason for suffering from adult acne, following a targeted skincare routine can make all the difference. And we might indeed be biased but Pevonia’s ProCorrective is one of the best targeted adult acne lines on the market especially when it comes to hormonal acne! 12 steps to minimise large pores: Your ultimate guide

12 steps to minimise large pores: Your ultimate guide

by Jo Boyden on Dec 06 2024
If you’re one of the many blessed with oily skin, you might find your struggling with large pores too, especially as the weather is heating up and oil production can go into overdrive! That said, large pores are one of the most common (and searched) skin concerns affecting people of all ages and skin types (not just oily skin). They can make your skin appear uneven, textured, or oily, leaving many of us wondering what exactly is causing them and how we can reduce their size stat! Keep reading as we reveal the reasons behind your large pores and, more importantly, how you can minimize their appearance with targeted products and expert tips too!   So, why do you have large pores? Believe it or not there are actually many reasons your pores might be a lot larger than you’d like! Excess oil production Pores are essential for releasing oil (sebum) to keep your skin moisturised. However, overactive sebaceous glands can cause pores to stretch, making them appear larger. Oily skin types are particularly prone to this issue. Clogged pores When oil mixes with dirt, makeup, and dead skin cells, it can clog pores, causing them to expand. This can lead to blackheads and a bumpy skin texture Loss of collagen and elastin As you age, your skin loses collagen and elastin, which are responsible for keeping it firm and tight. With less support, pores may appear more prominent. Sun damage Prolonged exposure to UV rays breaks down collagen and thickens the skin, stretching out pores over time. Genetics Yes you can thank your parents for those unruly large pores of yours! Your skin type and pore size are largely determined by your genetics. If your family has visible pores, chances are you will too. Improper skincare routine Using the wrong skincare products or skipping essential steps like cleansing can exacerbate the appearance of enlarged pores.   How to minimize large pores While you can’t actually change your pore size completely (thanks to genetics), you can take steps to minimize their appearance and achieve a smoother, healthier-looking complexion; 1. Cleanse thoroughly Keeping your pores clean really is the first step to minimising their appearance. This means using a gentle cleanser specific to your skin type both morning and night to effectively remove oil, dirt, sunscreen and makeup. If your skin is combination to oily, it’s best to opt for gel or foaming cleaners, if your skin tends to be on the sensitive side, there are some amazing sensitive skin cream cleansers for that too! Specific ingredients will make a big difference to the appearance of your pore size too. Cleansers formulated with AHA’s (Alpha Hydroxy Acids) such as Citric Acid, Glycolic Acid and Lactic Acid, and/or BHA’s (Beta Hydroxy Acids) such as Salicylic acid can make all the difference! While all four acids exfoliate on a cellular level, Glycolic, Citric and Lactic works on a more surface level to brighten and smooth your skin, whereas Salicylic Acid penetrates much deeper to effectively remove dead skin cells clogged in pores. We highly recommend Vie Collection Cleansing Gel with Glycolic, Lactic and Salicylic Acids. This foaming cleansing gel combines glycolic, lactic and salicylic acids to stimulate cellular activity, break the intercellular glue between dead cells and thoroughly cleanse skin. Remember harsh cleansers can strip your skin of its natural oils, causing your pores to become larger so do consider which cleaner is right for your skin!   2. Exfoliate Regularly When it comes to large pores, exfoliation is paramount! You want to ensure pores are unclogged to prevent further stretching, and exfoliating effectively removes dead skin cells and prevents pore-clogging buildup. Try Pure Balance Papaya Enzyme Peeling Wash. This plant enzyme-based deep cleanser formulated with natural papaya extract dissolves easily in cold water and eliminates dead skin cells without irritation, breaking down proteins to produce peptone, which washes away dirt and sebum within the pores without irritation. Tip: Exfoliate 1–3 times per week based on your skin type.   3. Incorporate retinol into your routine Believe me when I say retinol is a game-changer for pore refinement. A good retinol serum will boost cell turnover and collagen production, which tightens the skin around pores. Just remember though if you haven’t used retinol before you’ll want to introduce it slowly and at night to avoid any irritation. For more information on retinol click here.   4. Use Clay Masks Who doesn’t love a good mask and clay masks are no exception. In fact clay masks will absorb excess oil and draw out impurities from pores when applied. For a real deep clean use your clay mask once or twice a week. And look for masks that specifically have kaolin or bentonite clay. We love Phytomer CityLife Radiance Reviving Mask  This unique cream-mousse mask instantly counters dehydration, signs of fatigue, dark spots and enlarged pores. Combining 100% natural red and white clays, blue microalgae, red algae and a comprehensive depolluting complex of 3 marine sugars, it reveals luminosity, radiance and refined pores after just one application!   5. Hydrate Wisely Dehydrated skin can overcompensate by producing more oil, in turn worsening the appearance of your pores! Be sure to use lightweight, non-comedogenic moisturisers rich in hyaluronic acid, not heavy, greasy creams that could potentially clog your pores. We love: Hubislab Moisture Max Hydro Cream. It’s a powerful, fast-acting moisturiser that quickly locks in hydration while soothing skin. Formulated with a unique blend of hyaluronic compounds that work to form a protective moisture barrier, its lightweight texture provides a primer-like finish without any greasiness! 6. Protect Your Skin with Sunscreen UV damage breaks down collagen and makes pores look larger so you need to be armed with a good broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher and apply every single morning. Try to minimise sun exposure too and always wear a hat!   7. Use pore-minimizing products As well as your hydrating moisturiser and retinol serum, we recommend you invest in products specifically designed to refine pores too like Pevonia’s Age Correction Micro-Pores Refine Cream. it’s a mattifying treatment cream that minimizes pores by combining cutting-edge natural actives like red clover extract and retinol to regulate oil production and refine skin texture. This lightweight cream also hydrates while delivering antioxidants, leaving your skin smoother, balanced, and visibly clearer with regular use. 8. Avoid squeezing or picking pimples from clogged pores It’s tempting to squeeze clogged pores, but this can damage the skin and make pores appear larger. Use proper skincare tools or visit a professional for extractions.   9. Use a primer before applying makeup A good primer will become your lifeline if you are prone to enlarged pores. Not only will it stop your foundation from sliding off your face quite literally, it’ll keep your base smooth while reducing the appearance of pores (and fine lines!) if you are a sufferer of oily skin and pores on the, let’s say slightly larger side! Our recommended go-to is the ELES Pore Perfecting Face Primer. It’s oil-free (of course), perfectly lightweight and seems to combat shine almost instantly. It contains a natural Dermat Complex which enables it to absorb oil and effectively reduce pore size in one hit.   10. Choose your makeup wisely Unfortunately, our makeup can make pores seem bigger than they actually are. Products like our powders and foundation can settle into our pores over the course of the day, making them appear larger, so your best bet because, let’s face it we aren’t going to want to forego our miraculous makeup, is opt for mineral products! A huge benefit of using mineral makeup is that it’s non-comedogenic, meaning it won’t clog your pores! We love ELES Cosmetics range of mineral formulations. Try the best-selling Liquid Powder Mineral Foundation or if you’re a lover of powder foundations we highly recommend the Mineral Powder Foundation.   11. Give professional treatments a go if you are really concerned about your pore size, professional in-salon treatments can deliver dramatic results. Treatments such as chemical peels exfoliate intensively and deeply to unclog and refine pores. Microneedling boosts collagen production for firmer, smoother skin. And laser therapy reduces oil production and tightens skin.   12. Be Consistent Achieving smoother skin takes time. Stick to a routine and give products time to work, remember consistency is key to long-term improvement!   While you can’t change your pore size, you can control how they look by keeping them clean, unclogged, and supported with the right skincare routine. With a mix of at-home care and professional treatments, your pores can go from prominent to practically invisible.
10 Makeup tips to beat the heat

10 Makeup tips to beat the heat

by Jo Boyden on Dec 05 2024
Summer is finally here! and if you’re anything like me you’ll be loving the longer sunny days, but with sunny days comes rising temperatures and let’s face the last thing any of us want is our carefully applied makeup melting away by mid-morning! The good news is you don’t need to forgo your daily makeup routine this time of year, you might just need to tweak it since the key to staying flawless lies in the right techniques and products you’re using! Keep reading as we reveal BC expert-approved tips to keep your makeup sweat-proof, smudge-free and picture-perfect all day long…seriously.   Prep skin for long-lasting makeup! The secret to long-lasting makeup begins with your skincare routine. And yes, you might be loving the products you’ve been using for months now, but you may find they’ll start to be a little too rich for your skin as the weather heats up. In summer, it’s best to switch to lightweight, non-comedogenic moisturisers that hydrate without feeling heavy. If your skin tends to get a little oily in summer due to the humidity you can also look for mattifying or gel-based formulas to control excess oil. Also, because I don’t say it enough, do not skip on your sunscreen. You just need to opt for a broad-spectrum SPF 30+ that doesn’t feel oily and will protect your skin while acting as a barrier under your makeup. Try: Medicalia Sunscreen SPF 40 with Blue Light Shield The one and only reason why so many people are reluctant to use sunscreen (despite knowing how important it is) is because they can’t stand the oily slick on their skin or the obvious sunscreen smell. Well with this outstanding tinted formulation there is no thick white paste, oily residue or unruly smell in sight! It feels like a lightweight moisturiser, smells divine, is loaded with anti-ageing goodies and it won’t cause itchiness thanks to its mineral formulation including both zinc and iron oxides. Very slightly tinted (though most of the tint disappears once it’s absorbed) it leaves your skin looking smoother and calmer. Oh and it protects skin against not only UVA and UVB rays (yes it provides skin with broad spectrum protection) but pollution and blue light damage omitted from our screens too! What’s more the formula is reef-safe and works for all skin types and tones too! Its outstanding!   Prime for perfection Primer is your best friend in hot weather. Trust me. People often forget to prime their skin but I’m here to tell you a good primer not only creates a beautifully smooth base for your makeup, helping it to stay put all day long, but it can also enhance the pigmentation of your makeup while targeting specific skin concerns! Be sure to choose a mattifying primer for oily skin or a hydrating primer if your skin tends to feel dehydrated and dry in the heat and simply apply it after you’ve cleansed and moisturised your skin and prior to your foundation and you’ll be good to go all day long! Try: ELES Pore Perfecting Face Primer This primer is our go-to! Not only does it keep makeup in place it also combats shine, absorbs excess oil and also reduces the appearance of pores to keep your foundation looking flawless! Genius!   Choose lightweight formulas when it comes to your foundation You might love your full coverage foundation, but sadly heavy foundations and heat don’t mix well. We recommend swapping your full-coverage foundation for a lightweight alternative like a tinted moisturizer, BB cream, or if matte is your formula opt for a breathable matte foundation, mineral is best. All these products will even out your skin tone without clogging pores or feeling cakey. Try: Mineral Sheer Tint For warm summer days, or those days when you want a no-makeup makeup look or don’t feel like wearing much makeup at all, this sheer tint is a winner. It offers a light, breathable coverage while providing sun protection. The mineral-based formula is gentle on the skin, making it perfect for everyday wear. Try: ELES Liquid Powder Mineral Foundation For a beautifully flawless, matte finish, this best-selling breathable mineral foundation should be your go-to! It starts as a liquid and transforms into a velvety powder finish, providing the perfect balance between coverage and lightweight wear. It's enriched with vitamins A, C and E, making it ideal for those who want a foundation that cares for their skin and provide antioxidant, UVA and UVB protection. N.B If you need extra coverage because you’re concerned about blemishes, use a spot concealer only where necessary. Opt for creamy-based products Matte powder products can sometimes cake and settle into fine lines in humid conditions. Instead, go for cream-based or baked blushes, bronzers, and highlighters. These formulas blend seamlessly into the skin and give you a natural, dewy glow that lasts. Try: ELES Baked Blush, Bronzer and Finishing Powders This trio will highlight and contour while adding instant radiance to the face with soft, highly pigmentated creamy textured formulas.   Lock in your look While cream products are ideal for a natural look, a touch of translucent setting powder is key to locking your makeup base in place. Focus on oil-prone areas like your T-zone to prevent shine without over-powdering your face. Try: Try ELES HD Translucent Powder This loose setting powder doubles as a photo filter, blurring the appearance of pores, uneven texture and imperfections for an air-brushed, soft-focus effect on the skin. It provides sheer, natural coverage without any “caking” to lock in your look, plus it reduces the appearance of shine too thanks to its formulation of 100% mineral silica powder, perfect for absorbing that unwanted excess oil! And that’s not all! Using silica topically will also improve skin’s elasticity, texture and hydration, reducing visible signs of ageing over time. Oh, and it’s vegan, gluten free, paraben free, sulphate free and talc free! Win, win, win in our books!   Waterproof is the only way to go Waterproof and smudge-proof formulas are essential for summer, after all no one likes to look in the mirror at the end of the day and be confronted by horrendous panda eyes! From mascara and eyeliner to brow gels, these products resist sweat and humidity, ensuring your features stay defined all day! For mascara try: ELES Lash Fortify Waterproof Mascara The ergonomic brush and fortifying formula coats lashes to quickly lengthen, curl, volumize and lock them into place for all day wear. The result is instantly impressive eyes with lashes that are lusciously conditioned and protected all day long! For eyeliner try: ELES Superwear Gel Liner This eyeliner is not only super smooth to apply thanks to its moisturising and hydrating ingredients, but it’s also a long-wearing liner with intense colour pay-off! For eyebrow pencil try: ELES Precision Brow Pencil It’s easy to blend formula last for up to 10 hours and creates polished, better defined and filled in brows!   Use Setting Spray A good setting spray is like an invisible shield for your makeup. Choose one with hydrating properties and spritz it over your finished look to keep everything in place—even through sweat and heat. Try: Pevonia Hyaluronic Acid Hydra Mist This beautifully nourishing spray is a multi-tasking wonder, not only rehydrating skin with a burst of hyaluronic but also doubling up as a setting spray to keep makeup at bay all day long.   Embrace minimalism As much as many of us might like a full makeup look, it’s important to remember that less is more when it comes to summer.   Keep blotting papers or a powder compact handy Even with the best products, a little shine might break through. You can either keep blotting papers in your bag or use a mineral pressed power company to quickly absorb oil without disturbing your overall makeup look. They’re both a lifesaver for touch-ups throughout the day. Try: ELES Mineral Powder Foundation It’s the perfect product for any touch-ups, as well as eliminating shine I tell you! Unlike other heavier powders which can clog pores and in turn, lead to excess oil production (no thanks!) the ELES Mineral Powder Foundation is a translucent formula which not only looks beautifully natural but allows the skin to breathe freely too. The particles in the powder tend to absorb moisture, preventing shine and what’s more, it’s formulated with skin loving ingredients including vitamins A & E, so it’ll provide antioxidant protection as well as condition skin!   Cool down your makeup tools Pop your beauty blender or makeup brushes in the fridge for a few minutes before use. Applying makeup with cool tools can help reduce redness and make your application feel refreshing!   Beating the heat doesn’t mean sacrificing your beauty routine. By choosing the right products and techniques, you can stay radiant and melt-proof no matter how hot it gets. Experiment with these tips to find what works best for you, and enjoy a flawless, summer-ready look all season long.

Unlike some harsher acne treatments, salicylic acid is gentle yet effective, making it suitable for frequent use (we are talking 2-3 times a week). Incorporating salicylic acid into your skincare routine can lead to clearer, smoother skin! How does salicylic acid work? By breaking down the bonds between dead skin cells, salicylic acid encourages their shedding, which helps to prevent pore blockages that lead to breakouts. Is salicylic acid suitable for all skin types? Salicylic acid is ideal for those with oily or acne-prone skin, as it helps control excess oil production and prevents the formation of new pimples. However, it can also benefit other skin types, particularly those who are susceptible to the occasional breakout or congested skin. Can salicylic acid cause skin irritation? Salicylic acid can sometimes cause skin irritation, especially if you use it excessively or tend to have sensitive skin.  Common signs of irritation include redness, dryness, peeling, or a burning sensation. Just before you test the product first before applying all over your face. How often should you use salicylic acid? How often you use skincare formulated with salicylic acid really depends on the product itself as well your skin specific skin type. If you are new to salicylic acid, we recommend you start with using it once or twice a week and gradually increase to daily use if your skin tolerates it. It's also important to follow up with a good moisturiser to keep your skin hydrated. Can you use salicylic acid with other skincare ingredients? Yes, you can use salicylic acid with other skincare ingredients, but it's important to be cautious. Combining salicylic acid with soothing and hydrating ingredients like niacinamide and hyaluronic acid, can work wonders for your skin. However, be careful when combining it with other exfoliants like glycolic acid or retinol, as this can increase the risk of irritation. It's best to introduce these ingredients gradually into your routine or use them on alternate days to avoid over-exfoliating your skin. How to incorporate salicylic acid into your skincare routine Start with a cleanser containing salicylic acid, using it slowly to allow your skin to adjust. If your skin tolerates it well, you can gradually increase usage or introduce additional products like serums or spot treatments. Always follow with a moisturiser and sunscreen, as salicylic acid can make your skin more sensitive to the sun. The secret to a flawless finish: Must-have beauty products

The secret to a flawless finish: Must-have beauty products

by Jo Boyden on Aug 16 2024
I’m sure I’m right in saying we’d all love to achieve that coveted flawless finish - a smooth, even complexion that looks naturally radiant and free of imperfections! While achieving perfection might seem like the impossible for some, I’m here to tell you that with the right products and techniques, you can definitely get pretty darn close! Keep reading as we reveal the beauty products you need to help you achieve a truly flawless finish. Start with a good skincare routine Before you even think about makeup, lets talk skincare! To achieve a flawless finish you need to get your skincare routine down pat as no makeup, no matter how good it is, will apply smoothy without going onto healthy, hydrated skin! Cleanser First things first, you need to make sure your skin is perfectly cleansed. A cleanser preps skin by removing dirt, oil, and impurities that can clog pores and lead to breakouts or uneven texture. Clean skin allows your makeup to adhere better and last longer, creating a smoother canvas for application. A good cleanser also balances the skin’s pH, preventing dryness or excessive oiliness that can affect your makeup applying smoothly. By starting with a clean, refreshed face, you will set the foundation for a radiant, flawless complexion. Exfoliator Your exfoliator will not only help remove dead skin cells (which if left on the surface of your skin can lead to clogged pores, dullness and rough skin texture!) but by exfoliating your skin you will enable your skincare products like your moisturiser and serum to penetrate more deeply and effectively, in turn boosting their efficacy and therefore deeply nourishing your skin, and as I said before makeup will never look and feel flawless without going onto a healthy, hydrated complexion. You don’t need to exfoliate every day though as this can lead to over-exfoliation, once or twice weekly is ideal. Moisturiser This is non-negotiable. Just be sure to choose a moisturiser suited to your skin type. For combination to oily skin you’ll want to opt for a lightweight, oil free formula. For ageing, dry and dehydrated skin a richer cream formulated with hyaluronic acid should be your go to. N.B. Applying a serum under your moisturiser for an added extra boost of nourishment can be a real game-changer when it comes to achieving that truly flawless finish. Primer When it comes to your makeup, the foundation of a flawless look starts with a good primer. A primer fills in pores, smooths fine lines and skin texture, brightens and primes skin, and preps it for makeup oh and it helps your makeup last longer too! N.B Look for one that matches your skin type—a hydrating primer for dry skin or mattifying primer for oily skin. Now it’s time for your makeup. Foundation Now, let's talk foundation. Your foundation will help even out skin tone, cover blemishes, minimise the appearance of pores and increase skins luminosity! The key though is to find a shade that matches your skin tone perfectly and a formula that suits your skin type. Matte for oily skin, dewy for dry skin. To learn more about the perfect foundation for your skin type click here. Concealer If you suffer from dark circles, are prone to redness or are currently dealing with blemishes or imperfections a concealer should be your go to for touching up your skin! Opt for one that provides full coverage without caking, blending seamlessly into your skin for a natural finish. Blush & Bronzer A blush or bronzer will really enhance your features adding to that flawless finish. They add warmth and dimension to your face. Blush gives your cheeks a healthy glow, while bronzer contours your features for a sun-kissed look. Illuminator or highlighter An illuminator be it stick, powder or cream, will create a natural highlight, and gives skin a fresh, delicate glow, perfect for a brighter appearance! Apply to cheekbones, brow bones, and cupid's bow. Setting your makeup is essential To ensure your makeup stays put all day, setting products are essential! You can opt for a translucent powder which can help control shine while setting your foundation, or simply use a setting spray to lock your makeup in place, preventing smudging and fading. The finishing touches If it’s a complete look you’re going for, you’ll want to finish off with a few other makeup essentials. Eyebrows Well-groomed eyebrows frame your face so youll want to invest in a good eyebrow product, be it a precision pencil or a brow balm. Eyeshadow Eyeshadow enhances your eyes by adding depth, dimension, and colour. It can highlight your eye shape and complement your overall look too! Choose a neutral eyeshadow palette for an everyday look. Mascara Mascara accentuates your eyes by defining, lengthening, and volumizing your lashes, making them appear fuller and more defined.  Lipstick or Lip Gloss Completing your makeup with a lipstick or lip gloss will add colour and dimension as well as a polished finish to your face. These products help define your lips, making them stand out and balancing the overall makeup. Whether you opt for a bold lipstick or a subtle gloss, both will enhance your features and tie the entire look together. Plus, they can complement your outfit, mood, or the occasion! And remember don't underestimate the power of good tools. Invest in quality makeup brushes and sponges for a smooth, streak-free application. Proper tools can make all the difference in achieving a professional finish.
The best skincare routine for oily skin

The best skincare routine for oily skin

by Jo Boyden on Aug 09 2024
If you have oily skin, you’ll know the struggle of managing shine and breakouts all too well. But having oily skin doesn't have to be a daily battle! With the right skincare routine, you can control excess oil, minimize the appearance of pores, and keep your skin looking fresh and balanced throughout the day! Whether you're dealing with midday shine, frequent blemishes or seasonal flare-ups, keep reading for the best skincare routine for oily skin so you can achieve a clear, matt and healthy complexion all year round. What is oily skin? Caused by genetics, dehydrated skin and overactive sebaceous glands producing excess sebum, oily skin is a common skin type that leaves you with a slick shine (or greasy appearance). People with oily skin often struggle with large pores too which can get easily clogged with sweat and oils, this is why oily skin has a tendency to breakout where pores are more prominent such as the cheeks and T-zone. The best skincare routine for oily skin Step 1: Start with a purifying cleanser As with any skin type, perfecting your skincare routine is paramount. First things first, prep your skin with a good cleanser formulated with ingredients that will help reduce excessive oil and prevent the plugging of pores that can lead to acne breakouts! Niacinamide is a game-changes for oily skin! It’s a versatile and powerhouse skincare ingredient that works to regulate excess sebum production and to possibly even lower your skin’s sebum excretion over time! Plus, niacinamide is also packed with antibacterial properties - all while keeping things gentle for your skin. We recommend: Naturys Purifying Mousse. Its beautifully light, ideal for daily cleansing and is formulated with the purifying properties of niacinamide to thoroughly, yet gently cleanse skin removing excess oil, dirt, grime and impurities. The result? Skin feels beautifully fresh and baby soft! How to use: Apply over the damp skin and massage gently into skin morning and night. Rinse with warm water. Step 2: Use a Hydrating serum Just as with any skin type, oily skin needs nourishment and serums are perfect for that because they are lightweight and easily absorbed. Just be sure to use a non-greasy serum! A purifying serum formulated with niacinamide, and hyaluronic acid will keep your skin well-hydrated while helping to balance your oil production too! We recommend: Naturys Deep Purifying Serum. Containing a purifying complex of niacinamide, bakuchiol, hyaluronic acid, peptides and vitamin c, this serum, specifically designed for oily skin is both nourishing and soothing. Enriched with olive oil microcapsules that melt when in contact with the skin, it helps correct overproduction of sebum, enlarged pores, acne and skin prone to redness. Crazy right? How to use: Apply a few drops to clean skin in the morning and evening, lightly massaging with circular movements to absorb the microcapsules. Step 3: Always apply moisturiser Now that you’ve applied your serum, it’s imperative you properly moisturise your skin too. One of the biggest misconceptions about oily skin is that it doesn’t need moisturiser. Contrary to popular belief moisturising does not make oily skin worse. Moisturising actually helps to regulate oil production! Often people who struggle with oily skin, don’t give their skin the nourishment it needs and in turn cause their skin to dehydrate, their skin then tries to compensate by producing too much oil! And there we have ourselves a vicious cycle. The key is to find a lightweight moisturiser specifically targeted to oily skin types that won’t clog pores or leave a greasy residue. We recommend: Naturys Face Cream Age-Purifying. It's anti-ageing and the ideal solution for oily skin! Formulated with bakuchiol, niacinamide and peptides it balances skin, keeps oil at bay, reduces enlarged pores, purifies the skin and battles imperfections! Oh and it reduces wrinkles and signs of ageing too! How to use: Use morning or evening all over your face and neck and décolleté, after thoroughly cleansing skin. Step 4: Don’t forget your sunscreen As a general rule of thumb, sunscreen should be the last product you apply. It's also important to ensure you allow the rest of your products to properly absorb before adding sunscreen on top. We recommend waiting a few minutes after you've applied your last skincare product. We know many sunscreens can feel greasy on the skin so clearly that’s the last thing you want to apply to your already oily face right? But I’m here to preach to you the importance of sunscreen for all skin types and that it’s, unfortunately, necessary to wear every. single. day come rain or shine. Just make sure if your skin is oily to look for lighter oil free sunscreens that won’t feel heavy on your skin. We recommend: Hubislab - Post Rays UV Protect Sun Block SPF50+ PA+++ Ideal for all skin types including oily skin, this high factor sunscreen provides complete UV and antioxidant protection while preventing dryness, dullness and hyperpigmentation. Rich in Acetyl Hexapeptide-8 and hydrolysed collagen it keeps skin nourished, healthy and elastic, while the invisible matte formula applies smoothly and stays on all day! How to use: Apply a generous amount of sunscreen to your face and neck every morning, even on cloudy days. Step 5: Once or twice a week exfoliate skin Oily skin responds well to physical exfoliation because when those dead skin cells are removed, oil is less likely to get trapped and therefore less likely to cause breakouts. Just make sure you avoid over-exfoliating as it can lead to redness and irritation. We recommend: Naturys Purifying Peeling AHA Solution. Formulated with Mandelic acid, Alpha Hydroxy Acids, Tartaric acid and Lemon extract, this effective exfoliant solution promotes cell turnover and regenerates oily skin. Using this product regularly (once or twice a week), stimulates microcirculation and the physiological production of collagen and hyaluronic acid. How to use: Apply to skin, leave on for 10-12 minutes, massage gently and remove the product with warm water.   Additional step: Use a face mask If you have oily skin, we highly recommend that once a week, you use a treatment mask. Masks formulated with clay and charcoal are best for oily skin types as they naturally draw out impurities and absorb excess oil while calming any irritation, oh and they will ensure your skin feels 100 % refreshed a squeaky clean! Now that you’ve completed your skincare routine for oily skin, here’s a few tips when it comes to your makeup! Use a primer! You wont regret it. If you’re a lover of foundation but are a little over it sliding off your face as the day goes on, you need to introduce a primer into your life! A good primer can be a godsend for those with oily skin, not only because it helps makeup last longer but a good mattifying primer will also tackle areas of high shine, soften the appearance of fine lines and pores too! We recommend: ELES’s Pore Perfecting Face Primer. It's a light-textured, skin smoothing, oil-free primer that not only combats shine but absorbs oil and reduces the appearance of pores and wrinkles at the same time! The result – flawless looking foundation as soon as it’s applied, and it will stay put all day long too! How to use: Smooth over clean, moisturised skin. Apply mineral matte foundation If you are prone to oily skin, it’s best to steer clear of foundation with a dewy finish and instead opt for a matte, semi-matte powder or oil-free foundation. A handy powder compact should be the one staple in your beauty bag, that can come with you wherever you go for those times you need to do a little ‘touch up’. Just be sure to avoid illuminating powder with shimmer as this will only draw attention to skin texture and exacerbate pore size. Instead, opt for a translucent pore-minimising and oil-absorbent powder. Mineral makeup works wonders on oily skin because the particles tend to absorb moisture, preventing shine. We recommend: ELES Mineral Powder Foundation this best-selling foundation enables you to adjust your coverage from a translucent powder to a buildable coverage foundation with a richer, more opaque finish. What’s more, it’s formulated with skin loving ingredients including vitamins A & E, so it’ll provide antioxidant protection as well as condition skin! Oh and it will not clog your pores! How to use: Swirl a large powder brush onto powder and tap off excess. Apply over entire face in circular motions for best coverage. If power isn’t your thing and you’re a lover of liquid foundations but are concerned about slippage, fear not, weve got the foundation for you! We recommend: ELES Liquid Powder Mineral Foundation is ELES’s global best-seller for many a reason! One being its long-lasting staying power no matter what your skin condition. It’s packed with goodness including an exclusive multi mineral complex as well as vitamins A, C & E but its formula while it goes on as a silky liquid, sets to a soft powder finish, perfect for those with combination and oily skin. What’s more, it allows skin to breathe freely, so it won’t clog up those pores leading to unwanted blemishes! How to use: Apply directly onto moisturised skin or over a face primer. Using a foundation brush or problender sponge, sweep onto skin starting at the centre of the face and blending outward and down to the neck. Just remember consistency is key when it comes to managing your oily skin. Stick to your routine, and over time, you’ll notice a reduction in oiliness and breakouts! With the right products and a consistent routine, oily skin can be kept under control, giving you a clear, radiant complexion.
The benefits of face oils and the best ones for your skin

The benefits of face oils and the best ones for your skin

by Jo Boyden on Jun 14 2024
If your skin is feeling particularly parched or you’re wondering how to achieve that coveted healthy glow, face oils could be your answer. These potent elixirs are packed with nourishing ingredients that can seriously transform your skin, offering benefits that extend far beyond simple hydration. From enhancing your skin's barrier to providing a boost of antioxidants, face oils are a necessary addition to any skincare routine. Keep reading as we reveal everything there is to know about face oils, from their multitude of benefits that moisturisers and serums alone may not provide, to the best ones for your skin type. Whether your skin is dry, oily, sensitive, or mature, there's a face oil out there for you! Firstly, exactly what are face oils? Face oils are typically formulated with botanical and essential oils as well as plant extracts and antioxidants. They are designed to soften, nourish and balance your complexion, locking in hydration and providing skin with the additional moisture it needs for a truly glowing complexion. Non-comedogenic, they won’t clog pores and cause breakouts either! Why use a face oil Adding a face oil to your skincare routine can be a transformative step towards achieving healthier, more radiant skin. Face oils are packed with nourishing ingredients that penetrate deeply into the skin, providing intense hydration and locking in moisture. They can help balance oil production, making them suitable for various skin types, including oily and acne-prone skin. Face oils also contain antioxidants that combat free radicals, reducing signs of aging like fine lines and wrinkles. Whether used alone or mixed with your moisturiser or foundation, face oils will leave your skin feeling soft, supple, and glowing. The Benefits of Face Oils Adding a face oil to your skincare routine can be beneficial for several reasons Deep Hydration Face oils are incredible for deep hydration. Unlike moisturisers that may evaporate quickly, or often sit on the surface of your skin, oils penetrate deeply into the skin, locking in moisture and keeping your skin soft and supple. Enhanced Skin Barrier Our skin barrier is essential for keeping out pollutants and retaining moisture. Face oils contain essential fatty acids that strengthen this barrier, making your skin more resilient and less prone to irritation. Rich in Antioxidants Many face oils are packed with antioxidants, which help combat free radicals and prevent premature aging. Oils like argan are rich in vitamins A and E, promoting skin elasticity and reducing fine lines. Skin plumping In your 40s wrinkles can start to look more obvious because the skin’s natural oils decrease, the moisture barrier breaks down, and the skin dries out. Because oils are lipophilic, or fat loving, they pass through the lipid layer of the skin faster, preventing water loss and plumping skin with moisture more effectively. Balancing Properties It might seem counterintuitive, but oils can help balance oily and acne-prone skin. Oils like tea tree and grapeseed have antimicrobial properties and can regulate sebum production, reducing breakouts and giving you a clearer complexion. Soothing and Calming For those with sensitive or irritated skin, oils such as chamomile and calendula can provide soothing relief. Their anti-inflammatory properties help reduce redness and calm irritated skin, promoting a more even and calm complexion. The best oil for your skin type The most nurturing oil for sensitive skin Naturys Sensitive Hydra Oil If you suffer from sensitive skin and are prone to redness and irritation, this oil really can help transform your complexion! double cleansing

Why double cleansing is a skincare game-changer

by Jo Boyden on May 31 2024
Have you ever wondered how K-beauty devotees achieve their flawless, radiant skin? What is it they’re doing that you don’t do too? Well their secret is double cleansing! A transformative skincare ritual that promises deep cleansing and that coveted luminous glow!Ready to transform your complexion? Keep reading to discover why this K-beauty trend could be the game-changer your skincare routine really needs! What is double cleansing?Environmental pollutants, makeup, sebum and the SPF in your sunscreen means that cleansing your face with a single cleanser does not always rid your skin of all the impurities that it’s exposed to throughout the day. Two cleansers however do! Double cleansing is a two-step skincare ritual (and k-beauty trend) that goes beyond traditional cleansing. It involves using two different types of cleansers consecutively, ensuring every trace of makeup, sunscreen, dirt and impurities are thoroughly removed from your face, leaving your complexion fresh and prepped for hydration. The popular technique originated from Korean skincare routines, such as the infamous glass skin trend, but has gained popularity worldwide for its effectiveness in achieving clean, clear, and radiant skin.Korean beauty followers swear by the double cleansing method and so do we!What products do you use for double cleansing? The double cleansing process typically consists of two steps: Oil based cleanser The first step involves using an oil-based cleanser to dissolve oil-based impurities such as makeup, sunscreen, and excess sebum on the skin's surface. Oil-based cleansers are effective at breaking down these impurities without stripping the skin of its natural oils. Water based cleanser The second step involves using a water-based cleanser to remove any remaining residue and thoroughly cleanse the skin. Water-based cleansers penetrate deep into the pores to remove water-based impurities such as sweat, dirt, and environmental pollutants.By incorporating both oil-based and water-based cleansers into your skincare routine, you are providing your skin with a thorough deep cleanse, leaving it clean, refreshed and perfectly balanced. Our cleanser recommendations:Micellar waterHubislab Pure Balance Micellar Gentle Lip & Eye Remover. Soothing and deeply nourishing it effectively removes makeup residue while soothing irritated skin around the eyes and lips.Cleansing GelHubislab Pure Balance Refreshing Cleansing Gel. Formulated with natural surfactants extracted from corn, coconut, and palm kernel oils, this refreshing cleansing gel works to remove sebum and dead skin cells, while rebalancing the skin’s pH without irritationCleansing FoamHubislab Moisture Max Cleansing Foam – this cleanser not only gently removes impurities while preventing dryness it also provides skin with long lasting hydration thanks to its nourishing formulation of three types of hyaluronic acid, patented ingredient AQUAXYL, and sodium PCA. Skin is rendered smooth and supple after every wash. Cleansing milk Hubislab Pure Balance Refreshing Cleansing MilkFormulated with hyaluronic acid and lactic acid, this mild, moisturising cleanser completely removes makeup residue, dirt and grime while nourishing and repairing the skin.Ideal for all skin types, but designed specifically for skin made sensitive by over frequent face washing, use of chemical substances and antiseptics, and/or dermatological treatments, it not only cleanses but also strengthens damaged skin.Cleansing PeelHubislab Pure Balance Papaya Enzyme Peeling Wash - this plant enzyme-based deep cleanser formulated with natural papaya extract dissolves easily in cold water and eliminates dead skin cells without irritation, breaking down proteins to produce peptone, which washes away dirt and sebum within the pores without irritation. Is double cleansing right for you?If you wear makeup and sunscreen daily, deal with dull skin, or are prone to oily skin, blemishes and breakouts, double cleansing is for you! It will help prevent clogged pores, breakouts, and dullness and render skin radiant! Can you double cleanse with the same cleanser? While it's not necessary to use two different cleansers for double cleansing, using two different types of cleansers is actually recommended since it can provide more comprehensive cleansing benefits. Oil-based cleansers are effective at breaking down makeup, sunscreen, and excess sebum on the skin's surface, while water-based cleansers help to remove water-based impurities and provide a deeper cleanse. If you suffer from sensitive skin and are worried about irritation when it comes to using two different cleansers, you can still achieve a form of double cleansing by using the same cleanser twice. In this case, you would apply the cleanser to dry skin for the first cleanse to dissolve makeup and impurities, then rinse and repeat the process for the second cleanse to ensure a thorough cleanse of the skin. While using the same cleanser twice may not provide the same comprehensive cleansing benefits as using two different types of cleansers, it can still help remove surface impurities and leave the skin feeling clean and refreshed. Ultimately, the most important thing is to choose a cleanser that suits your skin type and concerns.Do you need to double cleanse twice a day?The frequency of double cleansing in Korean skincare routines can vary depending on individual preferences, lifestyle, and skin type. While some may choose to double cleanse twice a day, both in the morning and evening, others may opt for double cleansing only once a day, typically in the evening to thoroughly remove the days makeup dirt and impurities.Just be sure not to over cleanse! Over-cleansing in the morning can result in the destruction of the skin’s barrier function.
acne faqs

Acne - your most asked questions answered by the BC experts

by Jo Boyden on Jan 19 2024
From stress inducing activities (hello school holidays) to overindulging (another cheese platter anyone?) the December/January holiday season (or silly season as we like to call it!) are rife with potential triggers that can lead to acne flare ups! That’s why this time of year is when we, at BC, get inundated with your questions about acne.Whether acne is something you’ve lived with for many years, or it’s decided to crop up now as an unwelcome adult guest, acne is one of the most common skin woes and we are here to help! We've listed the most frequently asked questions about acne and tapped into the wisdom of our skincare experts to get you the best possible answers. Keep scrolling to find out what they are… Q: Why am I getting acne as an adult, I thought acne was for teenagers?Sadly acne isn't only reserved for awkward high school years. Several factors can contribute to acne in adults. These include;hormonal changes: This often occurs during menstruation, pregnancy, perimenopause, or menopause. Hormonal imbalances can stimulate the sebaceous glands, leading to increased oil production and breakouts.Stress: High stress levels can wreak havoc on your skin. Stress triggers the release of certain hormones, such as cortisol, which can stimulate oil production and contribute to acne. Additionally, stress may lead to unhealthy lifestyle habits, like poor sleep and an imbalanced diet, which can further exacerbate skin issues.Diet: While the link between specific foods and acne isn't universally agreed upon, some people find that certain dietary factors such as high-glycemic foods and dairy products can impact their skin and increase the risk of acne.Skincare and makeup products: The products you use on your skin could be a culprit. Some ingredients in skincare or makeup products may clog pores or irritate the skin, leading to breakouts. Ensure the products you are using are of good quality and are suitable for your specific skin type too!Environmental factors: Exposure to environmental pollutants, such as smog or certain chemicals, can contribute to skin issues. Additionally, humidity may increase the likelihood of acne. Not good news this time of year!Genetics: Your genetic makeup plays a role in your skin's characteristics including its susceptibility to acne! If your parents or close relatives had acne, you might be more prone to it as well. Thanks parents!Medications: Certain medications can have side effects that include acne. If you suspect your medication might be contributing to your acne, it's best to have a chat with your GP.Over-cleansing or products that are too harsh for your skin: Sometimes, the desire to combat acne can lead to over-cleansing or the use of products which you think will help but are in fact too harsh for your skin! This can strip the skin of its natural oils, prompting it to produce even more oil in response. More oil produced equals more breakouts! Q: Can I blame overindulging in chocolate for my breakouts?Sorry to all you chocoholics out there but the link between chocolate and acne isn’t actually crystal clear. It's more about your overall diet, which does include sugar (and dairy too) so if you’ve been hitting the cheese board like me this silly season, or indulging in too many sweet treats, this definitely could be impacting your skin. Remember everything in moderation! And instead try to indulge in foods such as almonds, blueberries and avocados as they are among a range of foods which may help to reduce and prevent inflammation. Q: How can I get rid of my pimples overnight? Some spot treatments can work wonders at reducing, and in some cases eliminating, unwanted blemishes overnight. This is because they encourage rapid healing by controlling bacteria, reducing inflammation and diminishing the follicular accumulation of keratin. For the most effective results look for spot treatments formulated with ingredients such as benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid. We highly recommend Phytomers Oligopur Blemish Target Gel as the best spot treatment! It targets blemishes with precision, rapidly improving the skin’s appearance and eliminating spots almost overnight! Simply apply a small amount of product to your pimples and let the powerful ingredients keep your skin follicles clean to achieve an even and bright complexion by morning. Q: Can following a specific skincare routine really help my acne? Absolutely! Consistency is key. A gentle cleanser, non-comedogenic moisturiser, and targeted treatments can help keep acne at bay. Also, don't forget sunscreen – it's like armour for your skin, yes even for those of us with acne! And I know it sounds counterintuitive, slathering sunscreen all over acne flareups but believe me when I say avoiding sunscreen can worsen the appearance of acne, and if the skin gets sunburnt, the symptoms of acne can be painfully exasperated.Just be sure to choose your sunscreen wisely. Using the right sunscreen can prevent and heal acne, soothe the skin, keep dark spots and clogged pores at bay, all while protecting from harmful UV rays.We love Medicalia Sunscreen SPF 40 with Blue Light Shield. Q: Can I wear makeup if I have acne prone skin?Absolutely! But you must be careful with what you use! Look for non-comedogenic, oil-free formulas. Mineral makeup can be a game-changer as it doesn’t contain any chemical nasties or additional oils, nor will it aggravate skin or clog pores. Genius! Lack of sleep and high stress levels can trigger hormonal imbalances leading to breakouts. Try to prioritise self-care, practice relaxation techniques and try to get to bed earlier if you can for ample beauty sleep. If you struggle with getting to sleep make sure you turn off devices an hour before bedtime and instead listen to some soothing sounds. We love listening to the ambient relaxation playlist on Spotify.
