6 winter beauty essentials we’re currently coveting

by Jo Boyden on Aug 10 2023
As someone who loves the warm, sultry months of summer, I always find it hard adjusting to the dry, cold air of winter, and this is coming from the person who spent 25 years living in the UK! I guess I just don’t like the way my skin goes from dewy and glowy to dehydrated and drab in just a matter of months.Cold days, zero humidity and artificial heating we all become accustomed to in winter, can put undue stress on our skin, leading to a dry, lifeless or super sensitive complexion! So when our skin starts to change, as a result of the change in season, it’s time to up the ante and incorporate new beauty products in your daily routine – winter companions your skin now needs. We’ve listed our go-tos, 6 beauty essentials we are currently coveting this winter, the products we know will take your skin from dry, dull and irritated to nourished, glowy and perfectly protected in next to no time. Pevonia Age Correction Marine Collagen CreamIf Hyaluronic Acid doesn’t already feature in your daily skincare routine, it should now! When it comes to dehydration, (which by the way is the no. 1 skincare issue during winter) the first product you should double down on is hyaluronic acid skincare! This is because hyaluronic acid is ‘The Don’ when it comes to hydration.Pevonia’s Age Correction Marine Collagen Cream isn’t just formulated with collagen, it’s packed with Squalane, Glycerin and Hyaluronic Acid too! It’s the perfect combination of rich but light and literally infuses skin with moisture replenishing vital nutrients. I love, love, love this product (in fact all year round!) and when combined with Pevonia’s Age Correction Intensifier Collagen & Myoxy Caviar, this powerful duo deliver radiant, moisture-rich skin.Pevonia Vitaminic ConcentrateI’m a huge advocate for face oils in winter. Not only do they calm and nourish skin, more importantly they strengthen the skin’s barrier which in winter can be seriously compromised. Due to their oily nature, face oils are wonderful for layering over the skin for intense hydration and protection.Remember face oils are for everyone, so don’t be scared to use them. For many years now I have turned to my faithful friend Pevonia’s Vitaminic Concentrate during the winter months and I can honestly say it’s a game-changer for my skin. It’s a luxurious dry oil (so absorbs very fast!) with a mandarin aroma which is to die for, and it radically combats excessive dryness, dehydration, and premature aging all in one!ELES Cosmetics Age Defying BB Cream 30If your skin is dull and lacking life you want to choose a foundation with hydrating and skin brightening benefits. After all your foundation should enhance your complexion, not mask it. This winter look to switching up your foundation for one formulated with hyaluronic and Vitamin A, these key ingredients will help skin appear more hydrated, plumped and healthy! We love ELES’s Age Defying BB Cream 30 for so many reasons! It’s a multi-tasking miracle! It literally primes, tints, nourishes, protects, blurs and evens out your skin tone for a truly, natural, flawless finish. And thanks to its skin-loving ingredients over time it helps to promote cell health, strengthen elasticity, reduce the appearance of fine lines and restore that natural glow you once donned! What’s more, you’ll feel as though you aren’t even wearing makeup oh and it provides skin with the necessary SPF 30 sun protection which is just as imperative in the cooler winter months as it is in summer!ELES Cosmetics Baked BlushWe are all on a quest for that healthy youthful glow, especially in the winter months when it’s almost non-existent, so blush is a must! Just a few swipes of blush will not only add colour and depth to your cheeks but can make your entire complexion look healthier, and your skin more youthful. It adds an extra glow that bronzer and highlighter just can’t mimic. We highly recommend the ELES Baked Blush in a shade of your preference – my current favourite is Posey. It adds instant radiance to your cheeks thanks to its highly pigmented formula. Plus, it’s silky smooth and super nourishing, great for dull, dehydrated skin types!Just be sure to apply it correctly – use a Blush Brush and lift colour upwards towards your temple from the apple of your cheek. You won’t regret introducing this little staple!Pevonia Dry Oil Body MoisturiserOften, we become lazy when it our bodies in winter! Neglecting the areas of our skin we have become accustomed to looking after in warm summer months! However, during winter, the skin on our bodies becomes just as dry and lacklustre as the skin on our face! And I’m sure none of us like that uncomfortable, itchy feeling every evening when we’ve indulged in a hot shower or bath but not bothered to moisturise after! We get it though, not everyone is a fan of rich body moisturisers that can leave your skin feeling a little on the sticky side! Cue Pevonia’s international best-selling body product (and one of our all-time favourites) the Dry Oil Body Moisturiser! Even though it’s a ‘dry oil’ it literally indulges and nourishes skin without leaving an oily or greasy feeling, at all! This is because it absorbs immediately into skin leaving it feeling silky soft and supple after every application instead! If you apply it straight after the shower while your skin is still a little damp, you’ll lock in moisture and reap in the benefits too. Plus it’ll restore any moisture lost from standing under that super-hot water I mentioned earlier that many of us I’m sure love to indulge in, in the cold winter months! Guilty as charged!Phytomer Oleocreme Ultra-Nourishing Hand CreamOur hands often bear the brunt of the winter chill, this is why a good hand cream is an absolute essential for me in winter, and hey why shouldn’t we look after our hands as we do our face? The thing is before I discovered Phytomer’s Oleocreme Ultra-Nourishing Hand Cream I hated the feel of wearing hand cream and I’d want to wash my hands immediately after I’d applied it, so instead I used to bear the brunt of dry cracked skin! Not anymore! My favourite hand cream (and I’ve tried many) absorbs into skin immediately and intensely nourishes, soothes and softens my dry, damaged hands. I take it everywhere I go!

How often you should clean and replace your makeup brushes

by Jo Boyden on Jul 26 2023
We all long for flawless, blemish-free skin no matter our age, so taking care of it daily is essential for keeping breakouts at bay. The majority of us will follow a daily skincare routine, but do we all maintain the tools we use on our skin to ensure they aren’t the cause of any unwanted pimples or other skin irritations? And when I say tools, I’m talking about the ‘tools of the trade’ – aka makeup brushes. When it comes to flawless makeup application, makeup brushes are a must-have. They are an essential tool in every beauty enthusiast's kit! They help us achieve flawless makeup application, enhance our features, and create stunning looks. However, many of us do often overlook a crucial aspect of using makeup brushes – cleaning and replacing them regularly. Proper maintenance of our makeup brushes not only ensures better makeup application but also promotes healthier skin. Keep reading as we explain why you need to keep your brushes clean, how often you should wash your brushes, and when it's time to totally replace them! Why do you need to clean your makeup brushes? If you notice an increase in breakouts or skin irritations, your brushes might be to blame. Dirty brushes can harbor bacteria and nasty stuff that wreak havoc on your skin. Imagine all the makeup residue, oils, and dead skin cells that accumulate on your brushes after each use. If you don't clean them regularly, these impurities can lead to several issues, including:Bacterial buildup - Dirty brushes become a breeding ground for bacteria, leading to breakouts, skin irritations, and infections.Patchy Application - Residue from previous makeup applications can interfere with the colours and textures of new products, leading to uneven and patchy makeup application.Clogged pores - When brushes are not cleaned, they carry excess oils and debris, which can clog your pores and contribute to acne formation.Decreased Brush Performance - Dirty brushes lose their softness and shape, making them less effective in blending and achieving the desired makeup look. But before you freak out and head off on that shopping spree, remember regular cleaning can extend the life of your brushes. How often should you clean your makeup brushes? To prevent bacteria build up and potentially exacerbating any skin issues, make it habit to give your brushes a thorough cleanse. The frequency of cleaning your makeup brushes can depend though on how often you use them and the type of products you apply. As a general rule of thumb if you are using your brushes pretty much daily, follow these guidelines:Foundation brushes and sponges - Since foundation brushes come in direct contact with your skin, they should be cleaned after each use no matter what the foundation. Beauty sponges, like the famous Beauty Blender, should also be washed after every application.Eyeshadow Brushes - If you use eyeshadow brushes daily, it's best to clean them at least once a week. Brushes used with cream eyeshadows may require more frequent cleaning.Blush and Powder Brushes - Brushes used for powder-based products like blush, bronzer, and setting powder should be cleaned every 1-2 weeks.Lip Brushes - Lip brushes should be washed after every use, especially if you work with bold or dark lip colours. How should you clean your makeup brushes? We get it, many of us are time poor and cleaning your brushes might sound like a tedious task, but it really is essential for maintaining their quality and your skin's health. Here are some tips to make the process easier:Use gentle cleansers - Opt for a gentle brush cleanser, baby shampoo, or mild soap to clean your brushes. Harsh chemicals can damage the bristles. If you use a gentle face wash, I also recommend using that too.Warm water rinse - Wet the bristles with warm water to remove excess makeup easily.Avoid soaking the base - When cleaning your brushes, avoid soaking the base of the bristles as this can loosen the glue and cause shedding.Pat dry with a towel - After cleaning, gently pat the brushes with a clean towel and reshape them to retain their original form.Air dry upside down - To prevent water from seeping into the base, dry your brushes upside down or at a slight angle. If you keep them clean, why do you need to replace your makeup brushes? No matter how well you care for your makeup brushes, they won't last forever. Over time, the bristles can become frayed, lose their shape, and fail to perform as they did when new. Here are some signs that indicate it's time to replace your brushes:Shedding - If your brush sheds bristles excessively despite proper care, it's time to invest in a new one.Frayed bristles - Brushes with frayed or splayed bristles won't give you the precise application you desire.Hardened bristles - Over time, some product residues can harden the bristles, making them less effective and potentially abrasive to your skin.Unpleasant smell - If your brushes retain a persistent, unpleasant odor even after cleaning, it's best to replace them.Signs of wear and tear - If you notice visible signs of wear and tear, such as a cracked handle or discoloured bristles, it's time to retire your brush. Remember, investing in high-quality brushes from the get-go can make a huge difference. Not only will they last longer but they’ll also give you better makeup results. Quality brushes tend to have more durable bristles and sturdy handles, making them worth the splurge. We recommend investing in makeup brushes made from allergy free synthetic fibres. Easier to keep clean, less likely to harbour bacteria and ideal for makeup application. Try ELES Cosmetics range of professional makeup brushes. Their smooth synthetic fibres do not absorb or trap pigment making them a breeze to clean! You can purchase them individually dependant on your makeup needs, or shop the full 15 piece collection

How to stop makeup from creasing under your eyes

by Jo Boyden on Jun 22 2023
Makeup creasing under my eyes is a pet hate of mine. We want to conceal those fine lines and dark under eye circles, but why does the concealer that’s supposed to help conceal, end up creasing and in turn exacerbating undereye signs of ageing!?Well if you are tired of dealing with those pesky creases under your eyes, ruining your flawless makeup look and well ageing you, you’ve come to the right place! Keep reading for the best tips and tricks so those under eye creases are no more! Hydrate and prep Before you even think about reaching for your makeup, it's crucial to hydrate and prep your under-eye area properly. Well-hydrated skin is more supple and less prone to creasing. Start by gently cleansing your skin, next apply a lightweight, nourishing eye cream (using an eye cream instead of your everyday moisturiser is imperative as it’s been specifically formulated for the delicate under-eye area.)To learn more about why you should use an eye cream instead of your moisturiser click here.Allow eye cream to absorb fully before moving on to the next step.Try: Age Correction Eye Contour. This power repair eye contour gives tired, ageing eyes the burst of hydration they need! Deeply nourishing thanks to its combination of marine collagen, marine elastin and hyaluronic acid, it targets signs of fatigue, visibly reducing puffiness, fine lines and wrinkles. What more could you want? It’s time to prime A good primer is a game-changer when it comes to your makeup! Creating an extra layer between your skin and makeup, primers are used to plump fine lines, blur blemishes, smooth skin, and help makeup last all day without caking, creasing or the need for constant touch-ups. They really are key to achieving smooth, flawless skin that’s perfectly prepped for your concealer and foundation!Look for a primer rich in nourishing vitamins and silica. Silica is a multi-functional ingredient and acts as an absorbing agent, and anti-creasing and caking agent!Apply a small amount onto your under-eye area and blend it in gently with your ring finger. This will help create a smooth surface for your concealer and eyeshadow.Try: ELES Retexturizing Face Primer. Not only does this soothing, lightweight serum feel like actual silk on your skin, it basically helps protect, condition, smooth and blur out skin imperfections too! Want to look like a filtered goodness, and have makeup last the distance, try this! Choose the correct concealer A good concealer will be your best friend when it comes to camouflaging dark circles! There are however a myriad of concealers out there, and selecting the right one is crucial when it comes to preventing under-eye creasing. Opt for a hydrating, lightweight, liquid or cream formula that has been specifically formulated for the delicate under-eye area. Avoid thick and heavy formulas, as they tend to settle into fine lines and creases. It's also essential to choose a shade that matches your skin tone, as a lighter shade can actually accentuate creases.Try ELES Dual Action Concealer, you won’t be disappointed! Now you need to apply it correctly While it very tempting to layer on that concealer to mask those dark circles, piling it on is the number one cause of creasing (and caking!) You need to instead apply sparingly! Firstly dot the concealer under your eyes, then use a small concealer brush or your fingertips, to gently blend it into the skin. Just remember, how you apply your concealer plays a vital role in preventing creasing! Make sure you blend the concealer evenly, paying attention to the inner corners and the outer edges. And try to avoid any excessive tugging or pulling at the skin too, as this can exacerbate the appearance of wrinkles and contribute to creasing. Set your makeup Setting your makeup is a crucial step to prevent creasing. After you've applied your concealer and finished your eye makeup, lightly dust a small amount of translucent powder over the under-eye area. Be careful not to go overboard with the powder, as excessive product can settle into lines and create a cakey appearance. Using a powder brush, gently press the powder onto the skin instead of swiping it.Try: ELES HD Translucent Powder. This 100% mineral silica powder mattifies the skin without caking or creasing, and softens the appearance of imperfections. It also absorbs any unwanted excess oil. Bonus! Avoid excess moisture Throughout the day, excess moisture can cause your makeup to crease. To combat this, gently blot your under-eye area with a tissue or blotting paper to remove any excess oil or sweat. Remember to pat instead of rubbing to avoid disrupting your makeup. Touch up strategically If you notice any creasing or fading throughout the day, don't fret! Instead of piling on more product, opt for a targeted touch-up. Gently dab a tiny amount of concealer onto the creased area using your ring finger and blend it in carefully. This method will help freshen up your makeup without creating a cakey or heavy look. Now you're armed with the knowledge and tips to keep those annoying under-eye creases at bay!

makeup for mature skin

Makeup for the over 40’s: How to prep skin for a flawless finish

by Jo Boyden on Jun 15 2023
As we age, our once smooth and plump skin starts to dramatically change, we experience loss of elasticity, increased dryness, fine lines and wrinkles and age spots. Some of us even become more prone to blemishes and breakouts (eek!) But this doesn’t mean we can’t rock a stunning makeup look like we once did! It just means we need to change tactics. Preparing mature skin for makeup requires a somewhat different approach to ensure we can still achieve that much desired flawless and radiance look! Read on as we talk skin prep for the over 40’s, including tips and techniques to help keep makeup looking natural and fresh all day long! Start skin prep with a thorough cleanse Before you begin your makeup routine, it’s crucial that skin is cleansed thoroughly. You want to make sure any impurities, excess oil or residual makeup even, has been removed so that your makeup adheres to your skin better, and lasts longer! Look for a hydrating cleanser specifically designed to target ageing skin, or a gentle creamy cleanser if your skin tends to be on the more sensitive side.We highly recommend Pevonia’s Hydrating CleanserN.B remember regular exfoliation is also important as it can help promote cell turnover and improve the texture of mature skin. Exfoliate once or twice weekly with a gentle exfoliating cleanser. If you have sensitive skin and wish to steer clear of physical exfoliators (exfoliators with the “bits” in them) try a chemical of enzyme exfoliator. We can’t get enough of Phytomer’s Vegetal Exfoliant with Natural Enzymes Hydration, Hydration, Hydration If we are talking makeup application for the over 50’s (over 40’s even) the most imperative step in prepping skin, is to hydrate, hydrate, hydrate! For that flawless makeup finish we all want to achieve, you need to create the perfect canvas, and you can’t do that if your skin is patchy and parched (which sadly is a thing as we age). Invest in a high-quality serum and moisturiser that will nourish and plumps the skin. Look for products containing hyaluronic acid, ceramides and antioxidants to boost hydration and combat signs of ageing. Using a gemstone facial roller be extremely beneficial too.Additionally, consider using a hydrating facial mist rich in hyaluronic acid to boost hydration levels throughout the day.We love Pevonia’s Hyaluronic Acid Hydra Mist Don’t forget your sunscreen Next. it’s time for the sunscreen. No matter what your age, sunscreen is a non-negotiable! You can spend all the money in the world on skincare, but if you don’t use it in conjunction with sunscreen you may as well be pouring it down the drain!A great option for sunscreen for mature skin is ELES Luminous Defence Brightening Day protection SPF 50. Primer is a must A primer can work wonders for mature skin by filling in fine lines and wrinkles, blurring imperfections, and ensuring longer-lasting makeup. In fact I’d safely save it will become your secret weapon when it comes to prepping mature skin for makeup. Look for a silicone-based primer that offers a smoothing effect without clogging pores. Apply it evenly to your face after moisturizing, focusing on areas prone to fine lines, such as around the eyes and mouth. We LOVE ELES’s range of face primers. For mature skin we highly recommend ELES Retexture Crème Face Primer Choose the Right Foundation Choosing the right foundation for mature skin can make a world of difference. You might well be a fan of matte foundations, but generally heavy matte formulas can settle into creases, accentuating dry patches and fine lines! As we age it’s better to opt for lightweight, hydrating foundations with a dewy or satin finish. Additionally, consider using a colour-correcting foundation to counteract any redness or discoloration like ELES Luminous CC Cream 20 (which has the added bonus of sunscreen! What’s more! For the month of June, when you purchase an ELES Luminous CC Cream 20 or best-selling Age-Defying BB Cream 30 you’ll receive a FREE Sheet Mask. Plus you get to choose from one of three sheet masks specifically designed to counteract ageing – Youth Recovery, Calming and Soothing or Hydrating and Brightening. Concealing and Highlighting A good concealer will be your best friend when it comes to camouflaging dark circles, ages spots or any areas of your face that needs that little bit of extra coverage. To address these issues, choose a creamy, hydrating concealer and make sure it matches your skin tone. Apply it sparingly with a small brush or your fingertips, gently blending it into the skin. Make sure you avoid any excessive tugging or pulling, as it can exacerbate the appearance of wrinkles.Try ELES Dual Action Concealer, you won’t be disappointed!N.B For a youthful, lifted effect, apply a light-reflecting concealer or highlighter to the inner corners of your eyes, brow bone, and cheekbones. Set Makeup with a Finishing Powder To prolong the longevity of your makeup without sacrificing the dewy finish, lightly dust a translucent powder only on areas prone to excess oil, such as the T-zone. Avoid applying it to drier areas, as it can accentuate fine lines. Use a fluffy brush for a light application, ensuring your skin retains its natural radiance.Try ELES NEW Translucent Powder Always add colour for that youthful healthy glow Another sign of ageing is a dull and uneven complexion! Cue the magic of a good blush and/or bronzer. Simple apply a subtle blush shade to the apples of your cheeks for that youthful flushed affect and lightly dust bronzer along your cheekbones and temples to add warmth and dimension.Choose shades that complement your skin tone and always remember less is more! Create mature eyes that pop For your eyes, keep it simple and elegant. Use neutral eyeshadows that enhance your natural beauty. Avoid heavy or overly shimmery shadows, as they can emphasize creases. A soft, smudged eyeliner and a few coats of mascara will define your eyes without overpowering them. Also line the inner rim of your lower lash line or waterline as it’s otherwise known with a white pencil a waterline liner! (We recommend ELES’s Waterline liner). By doing so it’ll immediately open up your eyes as well as make the whites of your eyes look whiter (synonymous with younger looking eyes!)For more on ageing eyes and the best tips and tricks to care for them click here. Complete the look with luscious lips As we age our lips loose their colour and get thinner and dryer too! so you’ll want to be armed with a good hydrating and volumizing lip product like ELES Velvet Satin Lipstick.Choose colours that flatter your complexion and make you feel happy and confident.Remember, the key to flawless makeup is not only the products you use but also the techniques you employ. Be gentle with your skin, blend your products seamlessly and never overdo your makeup.
eyelash tips for mature woman

Mascara hacks: eyelash tips for mature woman

by Jo Boyden on May 17 2023
Mascara! My go-to beauty product (in fact I wouldn’t leave the house without wearing it!) and one of the most popular beauty products out there! But why do we all love it so? Because mascara is a quick and easy way to make our lashes longer and our eyes to pop, while enhancing our overall look too! Plus it’s no secret that beautiful eyelashes can make you look and feel both prettier, and younger! But as we age, our eye lashes age too! So you might find that the mascara you’ve been loving for all those years suddenly isn’t preforming as it once was, and your lashes just aren’t as full and voluminous as before. Fear not, there are plenty of hacks and tricks you can use to make your lashes look fuller and longer. Here’s a few tips to get you started… Choose the right mascara formula As we age, our lashes tend to become thinner and more brittle, so it's important to choose a mascara formula that will nourish and protect your lashes. Look for mascaras that contain nourishing ingredients like vitamin E, panthenol, and biotin, and be sure to steer clear from non-hypoallergenic mascaras (ones that contain preservatives) as these can irritate your eyes, making you rub them more frequently which results in lash loss! (And the last thing we want to do is loose what precious lashes we have!)Try: ELES NEW Lush Mascara Be wary of using waterproof mascara daily If you are over looking at panda eyes in the mirror every afternoon you may have well turned to waterproof mascara (because less smudging and smearing of course), however waterproof mascara can be a nightmare to remove (cue extra rubbing of eyes when trying to remove – which can age the delicate eye area!) and the formulation itself can be harsher on your eyes causing lashes to dry out and be more prone to breakage.Instead, where possible use water-soluble long wear mascaras, and when you need to go waterproof (essential for beach and pool breaks) just be sure to check out the ingredients and remove with a good eye makeup remover. Layoff the false lashes If lashes are sparse, you might be loving the idea of your false ones. The thing is many false lashes come with cheap adhesives. Pulling them out leads to broken and damaged lashes. For women over 50, this means more lash problems. Eek. Curl your eye lashes but not with an eyelash curler We’ve been told to curl our lashes with an eyelash curler to create more volume and lift for our lashes, but this isn’t actually a good option as we get older as an eyelash curler can create more damage than good and cause already weakened lashes to break. Instead a popular way to curl your lashes is by using a metal teaspoon. Press the spoon, concave side in, against your eyelid above your lashes. Now use your fingertip to press your eyelashes against the convex curve of the bottom of the spoon. Hold your lashes in place for 10 to 15 seconds and repeat in the corners. You can even use something as simple as your finger to curl your lashes too! Simply close your eye and use your fingertip to gently push your upper eyelashes up against the top of your eyelid. Hold the eyelashes up for 30 seconds and then release them. Layer your mascara If you love your volumizing mascara but wish you could get a little more length to your lashes you could try layering. Start with a coat of lengthening mascara to define your lashes, then follow up with a coat of volumizing mascara to add fullness. Wiggle your mascara wand When applying mascara, wiggle the brush back and forth at the roots of the lashes to saturate the mascara at the base, then pull upward to the tips. This creates the appearance of thickness and volume and adds length without a clumpy mess. Don’t forget your lower lashes Many women focus all their attention on their upper lashes and leave the bottom lashes mascara free! The thing is applying mascara to your lower lashes can help create a more youthful wide-eyed, wide-awake look! Stop using expired mascara Like with anything, your mascara expires, and when it does, you need to throw it out and buy another! Even if you think it’s got a few more weeks or months in it. Not only can expired mascara be more difficult to apply to lashes without clumping or flaking, it can also compromise its ability to add length and volume to eyelashes, and can spark lash loss (and we don’t want to be loosing any more lashes than necessary do we!) This is because every time you use your mascara, you are pumping air into the wand, this creates bacteria! And bacteria in your mascara can lead to irritation and eye infections when applied...cue itchy eyes and rubbing! The average life of a mascara once used for the first time is 3 months, so if you are using your mascara everyday be sure to take note of when the 3-month mark is up! Don’t pump the wand when applying mascara It’s so easy to pump the wand when you are about to apply your mascara, hey I’ve been guilty of this many a time, after all many of us are under the impression that this will help coat the brush with the right amount of product, but by doing this you can let air into the tube which in turn will dry out the mascara prematurely. Instead twist the wand back and forth while pulling it out of the tube. This will help coat the brush evenly without wasting product and enable the mascara to last that little bit longer! Use a spoon (or card of some sort) to prevent smudging mascara If you are prone to getting mascara on your eyelids (and we’ve all been there) it’s easy to reach for a cotton tip to wipe it away, however the constant pulling of the skin using cotton tips on your delicate eyelid can actually damage already ageing eyes so it’s best to use a spoon or card of some sort (can try a business card) as a shield! Hold it up against your eyelid and then apply your mascara. This will help prevent smudges and keep your makeup looking clean.Whether you’re looking for fuller, longer lashes or just want to prevent smudges and clumps, these tips and tricks can help you achieve the look you want. So go ahead and give them a try – your lashes will thank you!

The best makeup products for rosacea according to the BC Pros

If you are a long time sufferer of rosacea, have sensitive, reactive skin, or are prone to blemishes and breakouts, you could well be searching for the best makeup products to help conceal your complexion, however with so much information out there (some misinformation) it can be hard to know where to start, and we know too well, when it comes to rosacea and other skin sensitivities the last thing you’ll want to do is exacerbate your condition! The thing is rosacea, even though very common (in fact a recent study has shown that 415 million people may be suffering from rosacea worldwide!) can leave you feeling uncomfortable, frustrated, skin conscious and insecure. The great news is, as well as rosacea skincare, there are a number of makeup products for rosacea that will not only conceal facial redness, but actually help and repair you skin too! Keep reading as we reveal the best makeup products for rosacea, and while we might be biased, our customers swear by each product too! Firstly though there are a few things you need to know when it comes to the best makeup products for rosacea; If you have rosacea you’ll want to use makeup to cover up facial redness and any bumps and blemishes on your face. Look for makeup products that are specifically designed for sensitive skin and no not contain fragrances, preservatives or harsh chemicals. Mineral makeup is best! Be aware of rosacea triggers which can cause unwanted facial redness such as spicy foods, hot drinks, alcohol and caffeine. Using the right makeup products will make a big difference in managing rosacea prone skin. Look for gentle, soothing products that aim to reduce redness and inflammation while concealing skin. Remember less is more when it comes to those with skin sensitivities and facial flareups. You don’t want to overdo it when it comes to layering your makeup products. It is also highly compatible with common skin sensitivities.“Eles liquid foundation is the most natural looking foundation I have ever tried. It does not dry my skin as other mineral foundations have done in the past and is safe to apply over eczema.” Katherine BarrELES Mineral Powder FoundationHighly compatible with common skin sensitivities, the lightweight powder easily adjusts from sheer to richer, more opaque coverage while effectively camouflaging imperfections.A brilliant foundation for rosacea, this mineral formula is breathable, protective, and heals skin conditions as you wear it. By using a unique aloe vera base, it soothes rosacea flare ups. The coverage lasts longer and feels lighter than other foundations, giving the impression that you are not wearing make-up.“The ELES Mineral Foundation Powder blends beautifully and provides excellent coverage. Makeup brushes THE GUIDE: How to choose the right ones

by Jo Boyden on Mar 09 2023
We all love to invest in our favourite makeup products, from the best BB Creams and bronzers to our formidable foundations and mascaras, but what about the tools of the trade? Makeup brushes are an essential for any makeup routine. After all how are you supposed to apply your mineral powder foundation, or that much loved bronzer? Let alone your eyeshadow and blush. That’s right, from foundation to concealer, eyeshadow, cheeks and lips, there is a makeup brush for literally every makeup category, but how are you supposed to know which makeup brushes to use to nail that flawless makeup finish?Keep reading as we reveal 5 tips to help you choose the right makeup brushes for you: Consider the type of makeup you use vs the brushes shape and size Different makeup products be it for example foundation or blusher require different makeup brushes. And the shape of the brush will determine the area of the face it is best suited for.For example a large flat brush is best for applying liquid foundation, a large fluffy brush is perfect for powder foundation while a tapered (a brush that reduces in size and thickness towards the end) brush is best for precise application on smaller areas like under your eyes. Look for high-quality brush bristles Investing in high-quality makeup brushes will make all the difference in the application and longevity of your makeup. The bristles should be soft and durable, should not irritate the skin in any way, nor should they shed or lose their shape over time. Synthetic bristles are usually the best option because they are durable, easy to clean and hygienic. Synthetic brush bristles are usually made of nylon or polyester, however ELES Cosmetics’ range of professional makeup brushes are made from taklon, a “green” and allergy free synthetic fibre. Their smooth synthetic fibres do not absorb or trap pigment making it easy to keep clean. Makeup brushes with natural bristles are another option, however they are made with animal hair to provide a very soft finish. Check the makeup brush handle A comfortable handle is important to ensure steady and precise makeup application. Look for brushes with sturdy and easy to grip handles. Consider your budget There are a wide range of makeup brushes available in the market with varying price ranges. Decide on your budget and invest in good quality brushes as these will last you a long time. Keep those brushes clean Your makeup tools are meant to be washed. Besides bacteria, brushes also accumulate dead skin cells and oil which can clog your pores leading to skin irritation and pesky pimples! Also if you apply your makeup with a dirty bush the end result can be a streaky and patchy complexion! Clean brushes definitely make for a smoother makeup application! You should clean your makeup brushes once a month by swishing them in a cup of warm water with a little shampoo. Rinse the brushes and lie them flat on a towel on the counter until they dry.Still confused? Here are some of the most commonly used makeup brushes for the different makeup categories; Foundation: A flat, densely packed brush or a beauty sponge is ideal for applying foundation. Try ELES Foundation Brush or Large Concealer Brush Concealer: A small, pointed brush is best for applying concealer. A concealer brush has a small head and is ideal for targeting specific areas. Try ELES Small Concealer Brush or Tapered Detail Brush Powder: A large fluffy brush is perfect for applying powder. Look for a brush with long, fluffy bristles that can pick up just the right amount of product. Try ELES Powder Brush Blush: A medium-sized angled brush or a fan brush is great for applying blush. An angled brush allows you to apply blush precisely to your cheekbones, while a fan brush can be used to dust a light layer of blush over cheeks and other areas of your face. Try ELES Powder Blush Brush Contour: A small, angled brush or a small fan brush is best for contouring. An angled brush allows you to apply the product in a precise line, while a fan brush can be used to dust a light layer of contour powder over the face. Try ELES Tapered Powder Brush Eyeshadow: There are several brushes that are ideal for applying eyeshadow! Eek you might say, however this all depends on the look you are going for. A flat, dense brush is great for packing on colour, while a fluffy blending brush is perfect for blending out harsh lines. A small tapered brush can be used to apply eyeshadow to the crease or to smudge eyeliner. Try ELES Base Shadow Brush, Blending Brush and Small Tapered Blending Brush. Eyeliner: A small, flat makeup brush or a pointed brush is perfect for applying eyeliner. An flat brush allows you to create precise lines, while a pointed brush is ideal for created a winged liner look. Try ELES Flat Definer Brush and ELES Small Eyeliner Brush By following all these tips, you can choose the right makeup brushes that will help you achieve flawless makeup every time.

Makeup primer – do you really need to use it?

by Jo Boyden on Dec 23 2022
From concealers to foundations, bronzers to blushes and more, with the multitude of makeup products available to ‘perfect’ our face these days, it’s no wonder some of us might question which products are really necessary and which ones we might be ok to forgo. For many, makeup primers tend to fall into the latter category, but we are here to tell you why this underrated makeup staple is a necessity when it comes to your daily makeup routine! Keep reading as we discuss everything there is to know about makeup primers, from what they are, to their numerous benefits, as well as our favourite primers for all skin types too! What is a makeup primer and what does it really do?Creating an extra layer between your skin and makeup, face primers are used to plump fine lines, blur impurities and blemishes, smooth skin, and help makeup last all day without caking, creasing or the need for constant touch-ups. They really are key to achieving smooth, flawless skin that’s perfectly prepped for your foundation! Depending on your skin concerns, you can choose from a hydrating primer, a mattifying primer, an illuminating primer or a colour-correcting makeup primer. What are the benefits of using a makeup primer? They provide the perfect base for your foundation Even though you might well have followed a rigorous skincare routine, your complexion can sometimes still be a little uneven, enter makeup primer! A makeup primer provides the perfect base for seamless foundation application free of any patches! This is because a primers main job is to fill the open pores of your skin and smooth it in preparation for your makeup to follow. They keep makeup intact all day long Ready to say goodbye to touch-ups and reapplication throughout the day? With a face primer in your makeup arsenal, you can enjoy a long-lasting, smudge-free complexion all day long. They can blur imperfections While makeup primers won’t enhance your skin quite like a bronzer, or conceal pesky pimples like a foundation, they are formulated to hide and blur imperfections! They are in fact touted as the photoshop of the makeup world! How they actually blur imperfections is down to two key ingredients: silicone particles which “fill in the gaps” on the surface of skin to even it out, and light-diffusing particles which scatter the light that hits the surface of the skin, creating an optical illusion that tricks the eye and makes pores and fine lines less visible. Sounds ideal right? They combat shine This will be music to those of us with oily skin! Indeed mattifying face primers can combat shine by balancing out excess oil, this in turn creates a smooth base for your makeup so it won’t slide off your face come lunchtime! They correct discolouration if you struggle with discolouration or hyperpigmentation, a face primer can be an important component in your makeup routine. Colour-correcting primers even out the skin tone and neutralize discoloration as the tinted pigments, antioxidants, and vitamin E brighten skin and minimize visible imperfections. They are packed with skin loving ingredients Many face primers, including our range of ELES makeup primers, are like an extension of your skincare, enriched with skin-loving ingredients including Vitamins A, C & E and salicylic acid to not only promote skin cell turnover and nourish and hydrate the skin but tackle and conceal common concerns like dullness, dryness and redness too! When do you apply a face primer? In terms of application, a face primer should be applied to perfectly cleansed skin, after your moisturiser and before you apply your makeup. Can you use primer without makeup?Absolutely! For no-makeup days, applying a primer is one of the easiest ways to conceal imperfections, colour correct, mattify the skin and combat shine and oiliness. You can apply your face primer after your daily serums and moisturiser. Are makeup primers for everyone?Whether you love a less-is-more makeup look or prefer dramatic glam, a makeup primer is the perfect tool, and you can choose the right primer for your skin's specific needs, from hydrating to pore perfecting and more…Our top picksFor dry to sensitive skinIf your skin is a little dry, opt for a multi-functional face primer that will keep makeup in place, while hydrating, firming and plumping the skin with a gentle blend of nourishing botanical oils. Try the ELES Retexturizing Face Primer. Not only does this soothing, lightweight serum feel like actual silk on your skin, it basically helps protect, condition, smooth and blur out skin imperfections too! Mature skin? The best way to cover under eye dark circles

by Jo Boyden on Dec 09 2022
Eyes looking tired? Dark circles more apparent? Unfortunately as we age so do our eyes! In fact our eyes experience ageing before any other part of our face, so dark under-eye circles, puffy peepers and fine lines and wrinkles are a given. All is not lost though! By arming yourself with a few key products, familiarising yourself with a couple of simple makeup tricks, and following our step-by-step guide, you can both improve and cover under-eye dark circles and other signs of eye ageing, even for those of us with mature skin! Firstly why do we get dark under-eye circles as we age? As we get older, our skin becomes thinner. This is the result of a decrease in fat and collagen production (which maintains our skin’s elasticity) As this occurs, the dark blood vessels beneath our skin become more visible, causing the area below our eyes to darken. Dark under eye circles can also be the cause of lack of sleep (which unfortunately increases with age too!) as well as poor blood circulation and insufficient toxin drainage! What is the best way to improve and cover dark under-eye circles? Start by giving yourself a mini facial massage with a gemstone roller By doing so you’ll help improve circulation, remove toxins from the eye area significantly improving dark circles and bags under the eyes, reduce inflammation, refresh the skin and tone your face! In fact gemstone rollers offer a multitude of other benefits too to your skin too. Click here to find out more. Invest in a good eye cream or gel or both! For mornings when your eyes are feeling particularly puffy, reaching for a cooling eye gel will do wonders for reviving this delectate area while reducing puffiness. We love Pevonia’s C Evolutive Eye Gel, it’s a personal favourite of mine and highly recommended by the BC Pros. It’s a wonderful, cooling gel, formulated with anti-ageing dynamo Vitamin C, skin saviours’ hyaluronic acid and Ginkgo biloba, as well as green coffee and it’ll have your peepers decongested and depuffed in one swift application! Also use a tapping motion with your finger which you apply it. This can help get rid of any fluid that’s accumulated under the delicate eye area.  If it’s dark circles you appear to be constantly suffering from, we highly recommend Vie Collection’s Chrono Eyes Puffiness-Dark Circles Wrinkle Cream. It’s a mouthful to say, but a product that does exactly what it says! It’s a beautifully fine cream enriched with moisturising ingredients to nourish the eye area while reversing puffiness, dark circles, and wrinkles! Oh and it instantly brightens the eye area too! Use a primer under your eyes before applying makeup As you age your skin becomes more prone to fine lines around your eyes. You want to conceal them but it’s best to do so by using a primer first. This will help fill in any lines and make the skin appear smoother (essential if you want to prevent makeup falling into the creases and exacerbating signs of eye ageing!) Use your ring finger and gently dab your primer over the wrinkles to the sides of your eyes and spread. Invest in a good concealer When it comes to camouflaging dark under eye circles, a concealer is by far your best bet. A good undereye concealer can give you complete coverage as well as make you look bright-eyed in seconds! Choose a shade lighter than your natural skin tone (as this will help brighten the area) but also opt for a “peachy” tone as this will counteract the blueish tinge of the shadows. Try ELES Dual Action Concealer. my secret weapon for concealing my dark under eye circles and helping me look like I’ve had 8 hours of blissful slumber as opposed to only 5! It’s formulated with a myriad of anti-ageing wonder ingredients including Hyaluronic acid, Caffeine, Vitamins C & E, Collagen and more! And it actually helps to gradually improve skin’s texture while concealing those obvious under eye dark circles. Its moisturising formula provides continuous hydration as well as a natural longwearing finish meaning it lasts for hours without seeping into fine lines and wrinkles! It’s seriously good stuff. Simply apply with a small concealer brush and then finish with a powder to set the concealer so it doesn’t crease. For the most brightening effect, apply your concealer in a “V” or upside-down triangle shape beneath your eye. Swipe it directly under the eye, but bring it down to a point on your cheek beside your nostril and fill in the entire area. Don’t forget to add a little illuminator and waterline liner to your eyes too!  Adding a little white eyeshadow (or pencil or illuminator) to the inner corner of your eyes, as well as waterline pencil to the waterline of your eyes, you’ll attract attention away from ageing eyes and create the illusion of younger, brighter, more wide awake eyes with one little dot of the finger!
best eyeshadow tips for ageing eyes

The best eyeshadow tips for ageing eyes

by Jo Boyden on Nov 17 2022
If you’re worried about ageing eyes you might well have stopped wearing eyeshadow in fear it will only exacerbate your fine lines and wrinkles. The thing is eyeshadow and all eye makeup for that matter serves a very important purpose no matter what your age! It can add depth and dimension to your eyes making them appear larger, it can complement your eye colour or simply draw attention to the eyes! And most importantly it will bring back life to your ageing eye area! Genius! So instead of forgoing eyeshadow, you just need to alter how, and which type you use! To get the lowdown, we talked to the experts at BC! Keep scrolling as we countdown 10 of the best eyeshadow tips for mature women. Start with a good eye cream It’s likely you’re doing this already, but if not, you’ll want (and need) the delicate skin around your eyes to be properly nourished! And we are talking both the eyelid and the undereye area! For a great eye cream for ageing eyes try Pevonia’s Age Correction Eye Contour. It’s formulated with Marine Collagen, Marine Elastin and Green Team which not only provide eyes with powerful anti-ageing benefits, it smooths, first and deeply nourishing the fragile eye zone too. Use a primer As our skin ages, under-eye wrinkles and crows feet become more apparent – they are a fact of life for us all! A good primer however will help reduce their appearance while increasing the longevity of your eyeshadow! It’ll also prep your eyelids preventing eye makeup from creasing, feathering, smudging or smearing! Apply a good under-eye concealer This will make eyes appear bigger and brighter in prep for your eyeshadow. Concealer isn't just for brightening up your under eyes though. Prepping the eye with a concealer that's about two shades lighter than your actual shade will make your eyeshadow more pigmented and in turn pop a lot more. You’ll need to use one with has a hydrating formula as this will add additional nourishment to the eye area as well as prevent the concealer from settling into fine lines and wrinkles.Try ELES Cosmetics Dual Action Concealer. Use a waterproof or long-lasting gel eyeliner You don’t want to get to lunch time and find yourself with panda eyes! No sireee. By using a waterproof or long-lasting gel eyeliner, it’ll stay in place all day plus give eyes much needed depth and definition. Try ELES Cosmetics Superwear Gel Liner. Line your eyes with a waterline liner Eyes tend to look duller and tired with age. A waterline liner will open up your eyes instantly creating the illusion of bigger, brighter, more youthful looking eyes.Simply apply your normal eyeliner to your top lash line then apply your waterline liner to the inner rim of your lower lash line. (We recommend ELES Cosmetics Waterline Liner). By doing so it’ll immediately open up your eyes as well as make the whites of your eyes look whiter. It works a treat I can vouch for that! Opt for matte eyeshadow and go mineral Eye shadow comes in many different colours and textures but for ageing eyes matte eyeshadows are the way to go. Those with mature eyes might find matte eyeshadow more longwearing and less likely to fade on their skin. Your best bet is to stock up on mineral matte eyeshadows that are pigmented without emphasizing fine lines but also packed with antioxidant vitamins A, C & E to pamper lids with crease-proof perfection. Try ELES Cosmetics Mineral Matte Shadows. Better still try the ELES Build your own Shadow Palette, you get to select which ever 3 shades of mineral shadow shades you want! A trio of colours on your eyes is always better than one, they will make your eyes stand out more and can also increase their size and let’s face it bigger eyes are more youthful! Choose lighter eyeshadow shades Opt for a lighter, natural eyeshadow shades rather than dark, smoky shades on your eyelids and around the eyes. Using neutral colours like shades of light browns, light pinks, beiges, or greys are best. Also add a light colour eyeshadow shade to the inner corner, lower lash line in outer corner, and the inner lid. Apply eye shadow correctly Don’t take your base eyeshadow shade and simply plonk it on the centre of your lid. Using a small eyeshadow brush, start from the outer corner of the eyes and work inwards, so that the colour gets gradually lighter. This will help give your eyes a bigger, wide-eyed look. Finish with mascara No matter your age, mascara will always be a go-to product. A good mascara (we are talking smudge-proof, waterproof, and long-lasting) adds volume and strengthens brittle lashes to keep them looking full and luscious. Fuller-looking lashes can also help to give a more youthful appearance to the eye area. However, it’s best not to wear mascara on the lower lashes as this can make your eyes look droopy as well as draw attention to dark circles and under eye wrinkles. Use a setting spray or powder Finally, to prevent eyeshadow fallout (after all we want it to stay in place all day or night long!) use a setting spray or if setting sprays aren't your thing, opt for a setting powder instead! Both work to lock your makeup in place. Try Pevonia Hyaluronic Acid Hydra Mist.

Exfoliation and sensitive skin, here’s what to do

by Jo Boyden on Nov 04 2022
If you suffer from sensitive skin the idea of exfoliating might scare you. After all you don’t want to exacerbate your already irritated skin, right? The thing is exfoliation should be a crucial part of your regular skincare routine no matter what your skin type or concern. Why? Because it offers a multitude of benefits, from removing dulling dead skin cells, to preventing clogged pores, encouraging cell turnover (so those healthy, new cells can come through) and more! In fact, it’s the one step in your skincare routine which will really help reveal glowy, silky-soft skin! However, before exfoliating your face, you do need to know how often to exfoliate and what exfoliating products will be best suited to your sensitive skin. As experts in skincare, we are here to guide you. Keep reading as we discuss exfoliation and sensitive skin and what it is you should do. Which type of exfoliators are best for sensitive skin? There are three different types of exfoliants – physical (scrubs which contain beads or small grains to manually remove surface debris), chemical (acid exfoliants which chemically dissolve debris) and enzyme (plant or fruit derived exfoliants that generally breaks down the ‘glue’ that hold dead skin cells together shedding old cells). For sensitive skin its essential to avoid scrubbing, this will only irritate already reactive skin and can lead to facial redness. Instead use a mild chemical exfoliator, containing AHA’s (alpha hydroxy acids) such as citric, glycolic and lactic acid, or enzyme exfoliators. These earth-sourced ingredients essentially dissolve dead skin cells as opposed to physically scrubbing them off.Be a little more cautious with exfoliators formulated with BHA’s (beta hydroxy acids) such as salicylic acid. While salicylic is great for acne prone skin it can be too harsh for those this skin sensitivities. How often should you exfoliate if you have sensitive skin?Once a week is fine, if your skin can tolerate it, increasing to two times can be beneficial but don’t rush it! It’s important to be consistent and go slowly to avoid any additional irritation. After all over-exfoliating can compromise your skin’s natural protective barrier – the surface of your skin which has a protective layer of oils and lipids which helps lock in essential moisture and keeps irritants out! What are the best exfoliating products to use on sensitive skin?Phytomer Vegetal Exfoliant with natural enzymesWe highly recommend this very gentle enzyme exfoliant. Perfect for for even the most sensitive or rosacea prone skin types, it uses natural enzymes to encourage cell turnover without scrubbing or irritating skin.“I have the most sensitive skin, so I can’t use exfoliants that contain microbeads or scrubs…this is a great alternative. It sloughs off all of the dead skin cells without ever irritating my skin! I use it once a week at the minimum, and it keeps my face glowing and smooth. It’s the most wonderful exfoliant ever!” Sarah RPevonia Enzymo Spherides Peeling CreamThis mini facial in a jar (literally) will do wonders for all skin types even the most sensitive of skin types. And no don’t let the word ‘peel’ put you off! It combines natural fruit pineapple and papaya enzymes with citric and to gently and effectively eliminate impurities, blackheads, dead cells and toxins and it’s so easy to use! Simply apply a thin layer to cleansed skin, wet your fingertips with warm water (this will help to ‘wake up’ the enzymes) and work the peeling cream with gentle massage movements into skin, leave on for 5 minutes and then thoroughly rinse away. Nothing makes skin feel cleaner, softer, smoother and brighter than this jar of goodness!! Trust me.“Absolutely the best product on the market. Perfect for all skin types and ages. Truly amazing. It’s gentle and effective, skin is left bright and soft.” Lisa W

A complete guide on where and how to apply blush correctly

by Jo Boyden on Oct 28 2022
Ah blush! The one product in your beauty arsenal that can enhance the features on your face while providing skin with a natural warm, rosy glow.I’m personally a huge lover of blush and wear mine daily all year round. It’s the perfect go-to when you’re after a minimal makeup look that’s quick and easy to apply. It also works in perfect unison with bronzer when you want to contour your face or simply create a healthy sun kissed glow. The problem is with the many conflicting tutorials out there, where, and how do you actually apply it? Well, we turned to the experts at Beauty Collective for the low-down. Keep reading for our complete guide on all things blush! Why you should wear blushWhen used correctly, blush can totally transform pale, dull or washed-out skin. It infuses warmth into any complexion by adding a touch of natural, flushed-cheek colour, so your face looks instantly brighter, healthier (and perkier!)Blush is also a great multitasker! This complexion booster not only adds colour to your cheeks but can also double as an eyeshadow (a great way to tie your makeup look together) and if you opt for a brown-toned blusher you can use it to contour your face. That way you get a blush and contour effect in one – a great time-saver!What type of blush should you use?Today’s blushes come in many textures — cream, powder, liquid. As a general rule of thumb, cream is great for dry skin, while powder is the best option for oily skin types, but it’s also a personal preference. Natural makeup works well with creams, but with powder you can be more direct on where you place it, and it tends to last longer too. However, for the best of both worlds we highly recommend baked blush – a pigment packed powder blush! Powders are usually made from lots of pressed powders, but baked powders are actually creams that have been baked slowly in a specialist oven until they are dry. This is what gives baked makeup some of its unique attributes; it has an ultra-soft, velvety texture and provides a sheer wash of soft colour for a naturally flushed complexion. How do you choose the right blush shade?Choosing the right shade can be a little tricky. Firstly, you need to understand your skin’s undertone (whether it’s warm, cool or neutral) then once you know this, choose a shade within your undertone, you can go as light, natural, bright or deep as you want.In general, if you have fair skin opt for light, dusty pinks and sheer peaches. If you want to make a bold statement, you can even give bright pink a go!For medium skin bright pink looks great on a cool undertone while coral and orange bring out warm tones. And if your skin is more on the olive side, anything with a golden undertone will bring out the rich warm tones in your skin. If you’re more of a cool olive, try light plums and cool pinks. How to apply blushHow you apply your blush is just as important as the type and shade you choose. Firstly, you have to select the right tool for application! Opt for a sponge when using creams, a sponge or fingers work fine with liquids and use a brush for powders. If powder blush is for you, you need to choose your brush wisely too! A big soft brush can be very ineffective. Choosing a specific powder blush brush is your best bet as it tends to be on the firmer side so that when you apply the blush to your skin you can control the powder and ensure in spreads correctly and in the right place.Where to apply blushThe ever-popular question of where to apply your blush can have a different answer depending on what you read, or what the trends are, however here at BC we use the general rule of thumb as below; For a natural lookFollow the natural structure of your cheekbones. It’s best to smile and then apply blush to the apples of your cheek and blend towards your temples/ears. This will lift your cheekbones and add a little extra colour to your face without looking over the top.For an instant facelift (and to make your face appear more oval-shaped)Apply blush to the back of your cheekbones into your templesFor a sun kissed glowApply blush underneath your eyes, across the bridge of the nose, and back toward the ear.To shorten your face and create balanceApply blush to the centre of the apples and out, just toward your eyes, avoiding blending too far out toward the temples.Just remember blending is key when it comes to blush application! How can you make your blush last all day?Applying a primer to your skin before makeup application will help keep makeup in place. Also, once you’ve completed your makeup routine, use a facial mist or setting spray such as Pevonia’s Hyaluronic Acid Hydra Mist. Now go yonder and blush away! And experience how incredibly energizing it can be for your complexion!
benefits of exfoliation

7 benefits of exfoliation and which exfoliant is best for your skin

by Jo Boyden on Oct 21 2022
While daily cleansing and moisturising is essential for your skin, exfoliating is another step in your skin care routine that you’ll not want to miss! And no, it’s not recommended you exfoliate every day, and how often you do totally depends on your skin’s specific needs, but there is no doubt how important exfoliating is for everyone, even those with sensitive skin. Read on as we talk all things exfoliation, including the many benefits and the best exfoliators to use. What exactly is exfoliation?Your skin naturally sheds dead skin cells to make room for new cells but sometimes, these dead cells don't shed completely. This is where exfoliating becomes paramount. It’s the process of removing these dead skin cells and debris from the surface of your skin using a specific exfoliating product or tool. Without exfoliating skin can become clogged and issues start to arise. What are the different types of exfoliation? There are 3 different types of exfoliators; Physical Exfoliators – these exfoliators which contain beads or small grains to manually remove surface debris. You can use this once or twice weekly and is better suited to combination and oily prone skin. Chemical exfoliators – these exfoliators use acids (AHA’s or BHA’s) such as glycolic and lactic acids that chemically dissolve debris. Enzyme exfoliators – these exfoliators are plant or fruit derived and work more gently than chemical exfoliators. They effectively break down the “glue” that holds dead, dulling skin cells together, in turn shedding those old skin cells and speeding up the skin’s natural exfoliation process at the same time. How often should you exfoliate? The general rule of thumb is to exfoliate once or twice weekly but this also depends on the type of exfoliator you are using as well as your skin type and concern. A physical exfoliator can be used once or twice a week. It is better suited to combination or oily prone skin. A gentle chemical exfoliant may be used daily depending on its strength. Just be sure to listen to your skin! What are the key benefits of exfoliating?Aside from cleansing away dry and dead skin, regular exfoliation increases the skin’s radiance, clarity and youthfulness…and that’s just the start…. It brightens skin As we age our cell turnover slows down and dead skin cells sitting on our skin’s surface can give us a dull, devitalized complexion! Exfoliating is THE one step in your skincare routine that effectively removes this layer of dead skin, restoring your healthy, vibrant glow. It unclogs pores Dead skin sitting on our skin’s surface literally covers our pores, resulting in skin issues such as irritations and blemishes. Exfoliation removes these dead skin cells and ensures pores remain clog free! It prevents acne Dead skin cells clog pores and when our sebaceous glands produce oil, it gets 'stuck' under the dead skin. This causes pimples and even acne because there is nowhere for the oil to go. Exfoliating effectively will unclogs pores therefore reducing the chances of getting these unwanted breakouts! It helps other skincare products to better penetrate skin for optimum results There is little point in splurging on fancy face creams and superlative serums if they are simply going to sit on the surface of your skin! Applying your skincare to a surface of dead skin cells (yuck) is ineffective, that’s because ingredients only work if they can get deep down into the dermis. Often people with dry skin tend to gravitate towards rich, heavy moisturisers not realising that the dryness they feel is in fact a layer of dead skin preventing their moisturiser from absorbing! Regular exfoliating will ensure your products can penetrate your skin, allowing you to reap in the benefits of your regular skincare routine. It stimulates the production of collagen Exfoliating also actually offers anti-aging benefits! As we age our natural collagen production starts to diminish. Exfoliating can actually stimulate our body’s natural ability to produce collagen, helping to keep skin looking plump, hydrated and more youthful! It evens out skin texture Exfoliants break down dry and dead skin while smoothing texture, which means the skin appears to look more uniform over time. It boosts circulation Exfoliation can also help detoxify your skin by increasing blood circulation and promoting lymph flow/drainage by removing toxins as well as dead skin cells. The results, a beautiful instant, rosy flush. What are the best exfoliators according to the BC experts?Phytomer Vegetal Exfoliant with Natural EnzymesGood for SENSITIVE SKINIf you are a sufferer of sensitive skin, we highly recommend this very gentle enzyme exfoliant. It’s a soft exfoliant for even the most sensitive or rosacea prone skin and uses natural enzymes to encourage cell turnover without scrubbing or irritating skin.“I have the most sensitive skin, so I can’t use exfoliants that contain microbeads or scrubs…this is a great alternative. It sloughs off all of the dead skin cells without ever irritating my skin! I use it once a week at the minimum, and it keeps my face glowing and smooth. It’s the most wonderful exfoliant ever!” Sarah R Phytomer Cyfolia Radiance Exfoliating CreamGood for DRY, DULL SKINIf your skin is dry, dull or devitalised, this exfoliant is a must! It does exactly what the name says! It gently exfoliates skin to reveal a truly radiant complexion! It features two organic exfoliants – argan kernels and pomegranate seeds, as well as Algae, Oligomer and Orange water that work together to immediately clear away rough and dull skin for a visibly softer, smoother and brighter complexion after every single application.“I love this product. It does wonders for my dehydrated, dull skin! It has a beautiful texture, is not harsh at all and the results speak for themselves. My skin is so soft and almost glowy after I use it. LOVE” Tina R Pevonia Enzymo Spherides Peeling CreamGood for ALL SKIN TYPESNo matter what your skin type if you are a fan of enzyme exfoliators over physical scrubs you are going to fall in love with this exfoliant. This little beauty (a mini facial in a jar as I call it!) does wonders for the skin. And no don’t let the word ‘peel’ put you off! It combines natural fruit pineapple and papaya enzymes to gently and effectively eliminate impurities, blackheads, dead cells and toxins and it’s so easy to use! Simply apply a thin layer to cleansed skin, wet your fingertips with warm water (this will help to ‘wake up’ the enzymes) and work the peeling cream with gentle massage movements into skin, leave on for 5 minutes and then thoroughly rinse away. When it comes to beauty, there is nothing quite like finding that holy grail makeup product. You know, that miracle multi-tasker that can totally transform your skin from blemished to flawless in one fell swoop? Want younger looking eyes? 14 tips from the BC Pros

by Jo Boyden on Aug 05 2022
Noticed your eyes looking particularly tired of late? Dark and puffy perhaps? Or have those fine line and wrinkles you fear really started to show but the idea of Botox and fillers isn’t for you? Unfortunately, the delicate skin around our eyes is one of the first areas to show signs of ageing, so it’s essential we give it the same level of TLC as the rest of our skin! Keep reading as we reveal 15 expert tips on how to look after our eyes and make them look younger naturally. 1. Start caring for your eyes from a young age Prevention is paramount we all know that and like with our skin you are never too young to start caring for your eyes. But fear not, just in case you’ve left it until now to really look after this most delicate area, there are still many things you can do to keep eyes looking younger so read on! 2. Give yourself a mini facial massage every day By doing so you’ll help improve circulation and calm the fluid build-up around your eye area. Try using a gemstone roller. As well as their many medicinal benefits, they can dramatically reduce puffiness by removing excess fluid around the eyes towards your lymph nodes where it filters out toxins! So clever! Applying an eye cream morning and night will not only ensure eyes are receiving the nourishment they require but will also help target signs of ageing and fatigue such as puffiness, under eye bags, lines and wrinkles. Look for products formulated with hyaluronic acid and shea butter for nourishment, vitamin c for brightening and caffeine which helps reduce swelling by constricting the blood vessels. Also use a tapping motion with your finger which you apply it. This can help get rid of any excess fluid that’s accumulated under the delicate eye area. In the morning opt for a cooling eye gel. Try Pevonia’s C Evolutive Eye Gel, it’s a personal favourite of mine and highly recommended by the BC Pros. It’s a wonderful, cooling gel, formulated with anti-ageing dynamo Vitamin C, skin saviours’ hyaluronic acid and Ginkgo biloba, as well as green coffee and it’ll have your peepers decongested and depuffed in one swift application! At night choose a nourishing eye cream like Vie Collection’s Chrono Eyes Puffiness-Dark Circles Wrinkles Cream. Yes, a mouthful to say, but a product that does exactly what it says. It’s a beautifully fine cream enriched with moisturising ingredients to nourish the eye area while reversing puffiness, dark circles, and wrinkles! Seriously! it gives immediate gratification thanks to a pearlescent finish that instantly brightens the eye area, and it has definitely calmed my puffiness, lightened my dark circles, and even smoothed my wrinkles! 4. Use a primer under your eyes before applying makeup As you age your skin becomes more prone to fine lines around your eyes. You want to conceal them but it’s best to do so by using a primer first. This will help fill in any lines and make the skin appear smoother (essential if you want to prevent makeup falling into the creases and exacerbating the appearance of the lines!) Use your ring finger and gentle dab your primer over the wrinkles to the sides of your eyes and spread. 5. Invest in a good concealer As well as becoming prone to fine lines and wrinkles, the delicate skin around our eyes becomes thinner with age too! This unfortunately makes it easier to see the blood vessels beneath you skin which is what causes the appearance of dark circles. It’s best to choose a concealer that is lighter than your foundation (this will help brighten your eyes) and one that is yellow based as this will counteract any purple or blue that you may have in your undereye thanks to the blood vessels. Use a concealer brush, beauty blender or your fingers to blend. Try ELES Dual Action Concealer. This anti-aging concealer actually helps to gradually improve skin’s texture while concealing those obvious under eye dark circles. Its moisturising formula provides continuous hydration as well as a natural longwearing finish meaning it lasts for hours without seeping into fine lines and wrinkles! 6. Line the outer edges of your upper lid to make your eyes look lifted Annoyingly as we get older the skin on our eyelids tends to droop too! By using an eyeliner on your top lash line from the middle to the outer corners with a tiny flick at the end (we are talking very subtle cats’ eye) will bring back the youthful shape to your eyes. Just be sure the line is thin as you want it to look natural and not over done! 7. Curl your lashes! While applying lashings of mascara to lashes will enhance your eyes, remember to curl your lashes first. This will open up your eyes for a wide-eyed look. While it might be a small step, it’s a subtle one that can make a big difference so don’t skip on it. Just be sure to apply two coats of mascara after curling. This will help lock the curl in place as well as add volume to your lashes. 8. Add definition and shape to your thinning eyebrows As you age your eyebrows get naturally thinner. By adding definition and shape to them you can completely transform your face and give the appearance of an instant eye lift! Start by brushing your eyebrows so the hairs are sitting naturally, then use a soft, waxy brow pencil like the ELES Precision Brow Pencil to shape and fill in your brows using short, hair-like strokes. Read more on how to create the perfect brows. 9. Reduce your sodium (salt!) intake Believe it or not, too much salt in your diet can affect your eyes and make them look older. Unfortunately, the delicate skin around your eyes is at higher risk of getting puffy the more salt you consume. Extra sodium unfortunately makes your body retain water. This excess water causes puffiness. Aghhh. So, try to ditch (ok maybe just cut down!) on the chips, takeaway and if you’re a fan like me, the margarita’s too! 10. Take a break from screen time We are all guilty of spending hours in front of our devices, but this excessive screen time can actually reap havoc with our precious peepers thanks to the blue light they omit! The thing is screens are a part of our daily lives so while it’s not possible to get rid of them, reducing the time spent in front of them or having breaks in between to rest our eyes can help dramatically. To learn more about blue light damage and how it affects your eyes, click here. 11. Apply cucumbers (and chamomile tea bags) to your eyes It’s no myth, by placing slices of cool cucumber over your closed eyelids for 5-10 minutes will help brighten and hydrate your eyes as well as reduce puffiness thanks to the Vitamin C and caffeic acid. While applying lukewarm chamomile tea bags directly on the eyelids will calm the skin and reduce inflammation. 12. As well as cucumbers, apply raw potato slices to your eyes! That’s right, applying slices of refrigerated potato to your eyes is another fantastic natural remedy to reduce undereye circles and puffiness. The enzymes and the astringent properties in the potatoes also help reduce inflammation as well as tighten the skin too. Genius! 13. Get enough shut eye Lack of sleep can affect our eyes, fact. Afterall who hasn’t woken up with saggy, puffy eyes of a morning when they haven’t had enough sleep? Sleep helps the body renew and repair itself and allows your eyes to rest, while letting that eye cream you’ve applied before bed work its magic! So, it’s time to make sleep a priority. I know easier said than done for some, but I also know myself that I need to practice what I preach, and if I wanted to, I could put down that book or turn off the tv or close my laptop an hour before I actually do each night! 14. Wear sunglasses religiously After all, you want to protect those sensitive peepers of yours as much as possible and we all know the sun is THE no. 1 cause of premature ageing!
