Damaged skin barrier? How to repair and take care of it

by Jo Boyden on Apr 28 2023
If you’re suddenly suffering from dry, irritated and sensitive skin it’s possible your skin barrier could be compromised. Fear not though, a damaged skin barrier can happen to the best of us, even devout skincare enthusiasts! Thankfully it’s possible to fix a damaged skin barrier – as long as you know how! Keep reading as we talk all things skin barrier, from what it is, to how to fix it and the best tips and products to use. Firstly though when exactly is your skin barrier? Our skin barrier is the outermost layer of our skin. You could call it your ‘shield’ as it literally serves as a protective barrier against the outside world! Be it environmental toxins, bacteria, and other harmful substances.Technically knows as the stratum corneum, it’s a complex system of lipids, proteins and cells which not only protects your face from external aggressors but helps retain moisture in your skin keeping it hydrated and healthy too. What causes a damaged skin barrier?Unfortunately our skin barrier can be very fragile and several factors can compromise or damage it, these include; Harsh soaps and skincare products. Using products that contain harsh chemicals can strip the skin of its natural oils and disrupt the skin barrier. Hot water Yes, something as simple as washing your face with water that is too hot can strip the skin of its natural oils leading to dryness and skin sensitivities. Sun exposure Prolonged exposure to the sun’s harmful UV rays can seriously damage the skin barrier and lead to premature ageing. Environmental pollutants Everything from air pollution and cigarette smoke to the weather and blue light from our screens can cause havoc with our skin. Genetics Some people are just more prone to skin barrier damage due to their genetics unfortunately, this doesn’t mean you are doomed, it just means you need to be more religious about looking after your skin and using specific skincare products to protect your skin barrier. Age Our ceramide levels decrease significantly as we age so our skin’s ability to hold onto moisture eventually becomes compromised too. What is the best way to repair your skin’s barrier? If your skin barrier is damaged there are several things you can do to repair it including; Use gentle cleansers Choose skincare products that are gentle and free from harsh chemicals. Look for products specifically formulated for sensitive skin. Avoid hot water Always use lukewarm water instead of hot water when washing your face. Make sure you moisturise morning and night Use a moisturiser that is specifically formulated to repair the skin barrier. Look for products rich in ceramides (an essentially fatty molecule called a lipid which holds your skin cells together, without ceramides there is nothing to keep all those hydrating ingredients from evaporating from the skin!). We love Pevonia’s best selling Age Correction Marine Collagen Cream. It rejuvenates skin cells while softening fine lines and wrinkles and replenishing vital nutrients. Avoid harsh skincare products Steer clear from products that contain alcohol, fragrances, and other harsh chemicals. Products your skin from the sun, every single day! Using a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 will not only help repair your skin but protect it too and not just from damage to your skin’s barrier but premature ageing as well. Avoid smoking Smoking can and will damage your skin’s barrier and lead to premature ageing. Use skincare products that help combat environmental damage on our skin If you live in the city, try using products that have been carefully formulated to combat environmental damage. We love Phytomer’s CityLife Collection. Eat a healthy diet A diet rich in antioxidants and healthy fats can help support the skin barrier and keep it healthy! Stay hydrated Having a damaged barrier often results in a dehydrated complexion from the skin’s deeper layers so it’s vital to replenish that lost moisture with lightweight serums formulated with hydration heroes like hyaluronic acid. Serums have the ability to penetrate deep into the skin layers, whereas moisturisers tend to hydrate the skin’s surface. We highly recommend Pevonia’s Hyaluronic Acid Hydra Serum and Hyaluronic Acid Hydra Mist for that extra boost of moisture.Drinking plenty of water daily (8 glasses is the recommended amount) is essential too! It will not only help repair damaged skin but help maintain a healthy and hydrated skin barrier once repaired too!
Glycolic Acid

Glycolic Acid: The key to smoother, more radiant skin

by Jo Boyden on Apr 17 2023
We all know there are many go-to ingredients we need to look for when it comes to our skincare. From Retinol for the best in anti-ageing to hyaluronic acid for supercharged hydration, but if your skin is looking a little dull and devitalised and you’re forever coveting that ‘instaglow’, glycolic acid is the ingredient you need to be looking out for.But what is glycolic acid exactly?Don’t let the word ‘acid’ scare you. Glycolic acid is a water soluble AHA (otherwise known as alpha-hydroxy acid) derived from sugar cane! It’s a type of natural exfoliant which dissolves the ‘glue’ that holds dead skin cells together, enabling them to be easily sloughed away revealing fresh, healthy skin underneath. And because of its small molecule size (glycolic acid actually has the smallest molecular size among all AHAs) it is able to penetrate into the deeper layers of the skin where it can help treat everything from fine lines to uneven texture, blemishes, and of course dullness! So now we know what glycolic acid is, what exactly are the benefits of this popular skincare ingredient? Exfoliation Glycolic acid is a powerful exfoliant that helps to remove dead skin cells, unclog pores, and promote cell turnover. This leads to smoother, brighter skin and can also help to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Hyperpigmentation Glycolic acid can help to reduce the appearance of hyperpigmentation, such as age spots, sun damage, and melasma. It works by inhibiting the production of melanin, which is responsible for skin pigmentation. Acne Glycolic acid can be beneficial for those with acne-prone skin as it helps to unclog pores and reduce the production of sebum. It also has anti-inflammatory properties that can help to reduce redness and inflammation associated with acne. Anti-ageing Glycolic acid can help to stimulate collagen production, which is essential for maintaining skin elasticity and firmness. This can help to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, giving the skin a more youthful appearance. What is the best way to use glycolic acid?Glycolic acid is a potent ingredient and should be used with caution. It is important to start with a low concentration and gradually increase the strength over time. Also, because glycolic acid works by exfoliating the top layer of the skin it can increase UV sensitivity from the sun so it’s essential to use sunscreen when using glycolic acid. There are several ways to incorporate glycolic acid into your skincare routine. It can be found in cleansers, toners, serums, and moisturizers. It is recommended to use glycolic acid once or twice a week initially, and then gradually increase the frequency as your skin becomes more accustomed to it. With regular use, this hero ingredient will help you achieve smoother, more radiant skin. Glycolic acid products we and our customers highly recommend;Pevonia Renewing Glycocides CreamCombining glycolic acid with hydration hero hyaluronic acid, this treatment cream works to dissolve dead skin cells, improving skin texture and diminishing fine lines too! Skin resurfaces soother, brighter and younger…seriously.“WOW, talk about overnight results! Minimizes my pores, smooths out my skin, and reduces redness. I’m not sure if it’s supposed to do all those things, but it’s been 2 months now since I’ve been using it every night and i LOVE this cream!” Sally OPhytomer Emergence Even Skin Tone Refining SerumThis lightweight, refining face serum formulated with a powerful AHA formulation, visibly reduces the appearances of imperfections. It diminishes the appearance of uneven pigmentation, acne, enlarged pores and dark spots!“On my third bottle now and loved how it made a few of my dark spots disappear. It does take a while to see the results but it’s definitely worth the price!” Vickie KPevonia Problematic Skincare CreamFormulated with glycolic acid, calendula and panthenol, this beautifully light-textured and oil free cream with UV protection is excellent for preventing pore clogging and blackheads. It renders skin soothed, hydrated and desensitized.“Great cream for problem skin! I LOVE this product. I have tried everything, and this has been the one that I will stick with. It is not too heavy and absorbs nicely.” Olive G

Oily skin do’s and don’ts: Busting the Myths

by Jo Boyden on Apr 11 2023
If you’re fed up with your face feeling greasy every single day, you’re constantly looking for ways to prevent your makeup sliding off your skin by mid-morning, or you’re simply over staring in the mirror and seeing a super shiny complexion staring back (and not because you’ve been adopting the ‘hyper glowing skin’ trend of late), it’s time to get serious about your oily skin condition. When it comes to oily skin there are a number of dos and don’ts. Things you may be doing but shouldn’t! Or things you aren’t doing but should! Keep reading as we bust a number of oily skin myths and provide our top tips on how to manage your oily skin too!Firstly though, it’s good to understand oily skin and why you have it! Despite oily skin being a nuisance, believe it or not, it’s actually not all doom and gloom! Oily skin happens when the sebaceous glands in your skin make too much sebum. Sebum is the waxy, oily substance that protects and hydrates the skin (it’s actually a blessing as it’s vital for keeping the skin super healthy and youthful looking) however, too much sebum can lead to oily skin! This in turn results in your greasy, shiny complexion and can also result in clogged pores, and unwanted acne if not treated! Fear not thought, that’s why we are here to help! Myth #1Oily skin doesn’t need moisturiser, it’ll just make it oilier – WRONGOne of the biggest misconceptions about oily skin is that it doesn’t need moisturiser. Contrary to popular belief moisturising does not make oily skin worse. Oily skin, in fact, needs moisturiser just as much as any other skin type. Moisturising actually helps to regulate oil production and often people who struggle with oily skin can actually have dehydrated skin (skin doesn’t contain enough water) therefore their skin tries to compensate by producing too much oil! And there we have ourselves a vicious cycle. The key is to find a lightweight moisturiser specifically targeted to oily skin types that won’t clog pores or leave a greasy residue.Myth #2Washing your face multiple times a day will help control oil production – WRONGWashing your face too frequently can actually have the opposite effect on oily skin! Over-washing can strip the skin of its natural oils, leading to increased oil production to compensate. Instead wash your face twice daily (morning and night) with a gentle, oil-free foaming cleanser to remove excess oil and grime. Myth #3Oily skin doesn’t need sunscreen – WRONGWe know many sunscreens can feel greasy on the skin so clearly that’s the last thing you want to apply to your already oily face right? But I’m here to preach to you the importance of sunscreen for all skin types and that it’s, unfortunately, necessary to wear every. single. day come rain or shine. Just make sure if your skin is oily to look for lighter oil free sunscreens that won’t feel heavy on your skin.Myth #4Using harsh products such as exfoliators daily will help control your oil production – WRONGUsing harsh products on oily skin can actually exacerbate the problem! Over exfoliating or just using harsh ingredients can strip the skin of its natural oils leading to increased oil production and potentially irritation too. Instead, opt for more gentle non-comedogenic products designed to help control an oily skin complexion. Now that we’ve busted some of the most common oily skin myths, let’s talk about some of the do’s and don’ts for managing it. DoWash your face with a gentle cleanser twice a day as mentioned earlier to remove any excess oil, grime and other impurities from your skin’s surface.Try Pevonia’s Phyto Gel Cleanser. This gorgeous non-drying product provides a delightful natural soft lather for deep cleansing. Saponaria, Rosemary, Lemon, and Pine, precisely blend to rid your skin of impurities and surface toxins and oils.Don’tWash your face more frequently than twice daily or use hot water as both can strip your skin of its natural oils and cause skin to produce even more oil to compensate.Do Use a lotion or toner after cleansing your skin as this will help remove any remaining oil as well as tighten pores.Try Phytomer Oligomarine Flawless Skin Tonic. Actually ideal for combination to oily skin types, this toner completes makeup removal and cleansing for really clear and clean skin. From the 1st application, the skin feels fresh, looks clear and is evenly toned. Day after day, excess oil dramatically reduces and pores are tightened. Oh, and your complexion will be more radiant too!Don’tUse heavy, oil-based moisturisers. While oily skin does still need moisturising just like any other skin type, rich moisturisers can clog pores and lead to breakouts.Do Moisturise your skin though! Simply use an oil-free lightweight moisturiser to keep your skin hydrated.Do Exfoliate regularly to remove dead skin cells and unclog pores which can help control oil production. Don’t Over-exfoliate! Once or twice weekly is sufficient. Over exfoliating skin can be detrimental and actually have some of the same signs as oily skin! From a shiny complexion to skin suddenly prone to breakouts. To find out whether your skin could be over-exfoliated click here.Don’t Use products with alcohol. Alcohol-based products can be very irritating and drying for oily skin. Your sebaceous glands will get the message that your skin is too dry and will work overtime to produce more sebum which equals even oilier skin!DoUse face masks that contain salicylic acid, beta-hydroxy acid, clays and ingredients with antibacterial properties. Our Pevonia Age Correction Micro-Pores Bio-Active Mask can be used once or twice a week as it pulls debris, blackheads and pore-cloggers from the skin. It's uniquely formulated to remove excess oil, control sebum production and help reveal an even-toned matte complexion.Don’tSkip sunscreen. ever. It’s important to protect your skin from the sun no matter what your skin type.DoUse oil-free or non comedogenic makeup to avoid clogging pores. Mineral makeup it best. These are the dos and don’ts for achieving healthy, glowing skin

by Jo Boyden on Mar 23 2023
We all strive for flawless perfect skin, that beautifully youthful and healthy complexion free of blemishes, dark spots and other signs of ageing, but achieving truly healthy skin requires us to pay consistent care and attention to our skin’s needs, and we aren’t just about our morning skincare routine. There are in fact a multitude of steps we should be taking to help our skin daily. Here are the dos and don’ts to keeping skin looking and feeling great day in and day out. DO cleanse skin every day Cleansing skin is a MUST. In fact, cleansing is the most important step in your skincare routine. Cleansing helps to remove excess oil, dirt and dead skin sitting on your skin’s surface which can contribute to the development of skin problems like spots if left! Daily cleansing also helps to balance your skin’s pH levels which can prevent dryness and irritation. Cleansing will also help enhance product absorption! This means those products such as your moisturiser and serum will be able to penetrate your skin much more effectively and provide maximum benefits! To learn more about the importance of cleansing and how a great cleanser will improve your skin tenfold click here. DO hydrate your skin morning and night Everything we do always takes hydration out of our skin. Wearing makeup, applying cleansers, sweating, drinking alcohol, and the sun! all take moisture out of our skin so it’s super important to not only drink water but to use hydrating products daily too! Make sure you invest in quality hydrating moisturisers, serums and cleansers that will replenish skin with moisture and not dry it out more! And for extra efficiency and penetration of active ingredients remember to moisturise while your skin is still damp after your shower. DO apply sunscreen every. single. day. All year round. It’s easy to think why bother with sunscreen on days when it's a little overcast or raining even, but as I’ve preached many a time before, sunscreen isn’t just a summertime skincare product when it’s hot and the sky is blue, the sun is always there and has the ability to penetrate through those clouds no matter how thick they are! It’s important to remember that wearing sunscreen is THE best protection against skin ageing. Oh, and if you are staying indoors, and happen to work next to a window like me, the sun has the ability to penetrate through the glass to your skin too!And then there is the issue of blue light damage. To read all about it click here. But in short, just like the sun, your devices omit harmful ‘blue light’ rays, so it’s important to wear sunscreen to protect skin against them too! DO exercise regularly Exercising regularly is not only important for your body and overall health and wellbeing, it can also improve the health of your skin. Exercise improves blood circulation and oxygenation to the skin, which in turn helps nourish skin cells and keep them vital. In addition to providing oxygen, blood flow also helps carry away waste products, including free radicals, from working skin cells. So in short regular exercise will keep your skin more supple and youthful in appearance it also imparts a healthy glow! DO eat a healthy, balanced diet with plenty of fruits, vegetables and whole grains Fruits and veggies contain powerful antioxidants which help protect our skin from free radical damage (triggered by smoke, pollution etc). When free radicals overpower our skin they trigger oxidative stress which can impact our skin presenting in the form of fine lines, wrinkles, dull, uneven skin tone, dark spots and skin sagging – eek! So make sure you eat that rainbow of fruits and veggies each day and keep premature skin ageing away! DO try to get 8 hours of sleep a night We don’t call it ‘beauty sleep’ for nothing! When we sleep our skin repairs itself, producing collagen and the more collagen produced means skin is plumper and less likely to wrinkle! If we’re sleep-deprived, not only will we wake with dark under-eye circles and bags, but we are also more likely to experience skin irritation, dehydration, fine lines, and dare I say blemishes! Us adults need a minimum of 7 hours of restful slumber a night, 8 preferred! Just be sure you switch off any electronics an hour or so before a practice some relaxation techniques! DO drink at least 6-8 glasses of water a day Water is essential for healthy skin. It flushes out toxins and helps maintain your skin’s elasticity (which keeps it looking younger!) Those who drink more water are less likely to suffer from premature ageing as those who drink little amounts of water daily!Drinking ample amounts of water also helps balance your skin’s oil and water content which in turn helps to prevent excess oil and sebum secretion (meaning fewer clogged pores and less chances of getting spots!)It’s important to remember though that our skin is the last of our organs to receive water and nutrients so plenty of it daily is a must! DO exfoliate your skin at least once a week even if it’s on the sensitive side Weekly exfoliation is a must to remove dead skin cells and promote cell turnover. If the dead skin cells aren’t removed they can get trapped leading to clogged pores and unwanted spots. You might be afraid to exfoliate if your skin is on the sensitive side but that’s ok there are amazing sensitive skin exfoliators out there for you! You just need to steer clear of physical exfoliants and opt for gentle enzyme exfoliators that don’t contain granules. These earth-sourced ingredients essentially dissolve dead skin cells as opposed to physically scrubbing them off.For more on what to do when it comes to exfoliating sensitive skin click here. But DON’T over exfoliate your skin Over-exfoliating skin can strip it of natural oils and lead to dryness and irritation. To learn more about the impact of over-exfoliated skin click here. DON’T overload your skin with products From cleansers to exfoliators, serums, moisturisers, masks, oils and more, it is easy to get carried away with skincare and believe that buying and applying all the products will be best for your skin! The problem is overloading it, particularly when you are using too many actives in your products can actually be detrimental and result in dryness, irritation and redness! Instead, listen to your skin! The best approach is to understand your own individual needs rather than just adding layers of products because you are under the misconception that using them all will deliver optimum skin results!Remember if you are prone to sensitive skin simplicity is key, if you have an oily complexion cleansing, toning and a light mattifying moisturiser can be enough, and if your skin tends to be on the dry side, then a serum, moisturiser, mist and face oil to lock moisture in will be beneficial. Also, if you are adding in new steps to your skincare routine, do so one product at a time so that your skin has time to adjust. DON’T overdo your makeup Who doesn’t love wearing a bit of makeup, it can totally transform the way we look and feel after all, but overdoing it is a no no. Not because it might look OTT but because of the effect it can have on your skin. Depending on your skin type, excessive makeup can clog your pores leading to breakouts. Plus the chemicals in some makeup products can dry out your skin leaving it looking dull, dehydrated and depleted. A solution is to use healthy makeup formulations packed with skin loving ingredients like mineral makeup. DON’T use hot water when washing your face or taking a shower Hot water can strip your skin of its natural oils and in turn cause excessive dryness. Instead, use lukewarm water. DON’T leave your makeup on when going to bed I’m sure we’ve ALL been guilty of going to bed with our makeup on once or even many a time! Especially when we are exhausted after the daily juggle, or perhaps have had one too many and ooh how that bed looks so inviting but removing the day's makeup and grime off your face is a must! In fact not cleansing before bed means your skin is unable to regenerate effectively while you sleep, so pores clog, blemishes become more apparent, and fatigue (ageing!) signs start to appear. DON’T drink too much alcohol Many of us might love a margarita with friends or that big glass of red of an evening but sadly excessive alcohol consumption can dehydrate your skin and contribute to wrinkles and other skin issues, so try and limit your weekly alcohol consumption. DON’T smoke Smoking can accelerate the ageing process! It can damage collagen and elastin in your skin which leads to the formation of wrinkles and other signs of ageing. DON’T stress too much Stress can lead to skin problems like acne and eczema so managing stress levels through relaxation techniques like meditation, yoga and deep breathing can be essential for skin health.

combination skin vs oily skin

Combination skin vs oily skin: Which type is your skin?

by Jo Boyden on Dec 23 2022
With the weather warming up now summer is finally underway, you may well have noticed a change in your skin. Perhaps it’s looking and feeling a little more oily than usual, with dry areas even? Or maybe you’re experiencing a constant shiny complexion which let’s face it is far from desirable. Unfortunately with a rise in temperature and humidity, comes an increase in our skin’s sebum production (the oil secreted by the glands in the skin) so it’s then that we might all of a sudden self-diagnose our skin as oily, when in fact it might be a combination complexion you actually have? Many of us do find it hard to tell these two skin conditions apart, after all they do share certain similarities, but oily and combination skin are in fact two very different skin conditions and therefore need to be treated in different ways.So if you think you are one of many dealing with either oily or combination skin, we are here to tell you the difference between the two, and exactly which skin type it is you have. What is combination skin?If you have combination skin, you do indeed suffer from oily areas on your face, but this tends to be concentrated to your T-zone (forehead, nose and chin) while your cheeks remain normal or dry. That said, your skin can also be oily and dry in different areas, or your might have noticed your pores are enlarged, or you’re experiencing some signs of sensitivity. With that said if you’ve noticed you have two or more skin issues occurring at the same time, it’s a sign you have combination skin. What is oily skin?On the other hand, oily skin is skin that is shiny (or greasy) all over the face, although those with oily skin may also notice a prominence along their T-zone, where they may be more prone to pimples. People with oily skin often struggle with large pores too which can get easily clogged with sweat and oils, this is why oily skin had a tendency to breakout where pores are more prominent such as the cheeks and T-zone. Another way to determine that you have an oily skin type is that shortly after cleansing, oil will return! After cleansing, oily skin will feel clean and oil-free, almost the only time it feels that way. Shortly after cleansing, oil will return. What are the best products for oily and combination skin?Want to know which products are best suited to your oily skin? Click here.Combination skin? AHAs, BHAs and your skin: Everything you need to know

by Jo Boyden on Dec 15 2022
If you are a lover of skincare, you’ve likely heard of AHA and BHAs, but do you know what it is they actually are, what they can do for your skin or what the difference between these exfoliating acids really are? Keep reading for everything you need to know about BHA, AHAs and your skin. What are AHAs and how do they work?AHAs, or otherwise known as Alpha Hydroxy Acids, are water-soluble acids derived from fruits and plants. They’re considered a chemical exfoliant, which means that they use chemicals — aka acids or enzymes — to buff away dead skin cells. The most common AHA’s in skincare are glycolic acid, lactic acid, citric acid and malic acid and they are typically found in cleansers and exfoliators but can sometimes feature in masks, serums and moisturisers too!AHAs work by breaking down the ‘glue’ that binds dead skin cells to the skin. Because they have a large molecule size, they primarily work on the top layers of the skin, making them particularly beneficial for those with dry, dehydrated or hyperpigmented skin. By removing dead and dry skin cells, AHAs smooth skin texture, brighten skin tone, fade pigmentation, and can also reduce the chance of breakouts from occurring! What are BHA’s and how do they work? The most well-known BHA is salicylic acid – chances are you’ll have heard of this one if you have breakout-prone skin, since it’s found in many spot treatments.Like AHAs, BHAs also work by breaking down the ‘glue’ that binds dull, dead skin to the surface, however they work on a much deeper level than AHAs, penetrating deep into the pores, unclogging and removing dead skin cells, excess sebum and congestion. This is because BHAs are oil-soluble, making them an effective treatment for oily, breakout and acne-prone skin. Because BHAs can penetrate so deep, removing both dead skin cells and excess oil (which when combined can clog pores and lead to breakouts) they are an effective whitehead and blackhead buster. BHAs also act as an anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory, so they work to kill acne-causing bacteria and reduce the redness and swelling of spots too. What is the difference between AHA’s and BHA’s?Although both of these ingredients are exfoliating acids and work to improve the appearance of skin by exfoliating it, they actually work in different ways. AHA’s work to break down the glue that holds dead skin cells together while BHA’s go deeper into the pores to remove dirt and oil.Are AHAs and BHAs good for all skin types? If you have oily and blemish prone skin, you’re best to choose skincare products formulated with BHA’s. If your skin tends to be on the dry, dehydrated side, AHA’s should be your go to.While these acids can dramatically improve the appearance of your skin, it’s important to remember that both AHAs and BHAs are active ingredients which (if overused) can impact your skin’s natural barrier, cause irritation, and increase skin’s UV sensitivity. For this reason, it’s essential to understand how to use acids properly, what to do if you over exfoliate your skin, and the best AHA and BHA skincare for your skin type. How to use AHA’s and BHA’s properlyAs with most skincare ingredients, especially exfoliants, AHAs and BHAs have their downsides, including possible sun sensitivity, peeling and itching, so you need to be sure not to overuse any products formulated with AHAs and BHA’s and be extra diligent about slathering on your sunscreen…daily, all year round! Before you incorporate AHA and/or BHA products into your daily skincare routine, you need to consider the other skincare products you are using, paying close attention to the ingredient list to avoid irritation since AHAs and BHA’s might not be compatible with them. It is best to steer clear of your retinol cream or serum on a day you are using AHA and BHA rich skincare as the combination may cause excessive skin sensitivity, irritation, and redness. On the other hand AHAs and BHAs can be mixed with moisturizing ingredients like hyaluronic acid, ceramides, to get effective and long lasting results.AHAs and BHAs themselves can be combined. However AHAs such as glycolic acid, tend to be best for dry, dehydrated skin and surface-level skin concerns like acne scaring, whereas BHAs such as salicylic acid, are best for oily, blemish, and acne-prone skin types. You can use both by including skincare products which contain both ingredients, or by alternating your products. Try these AHA skincare favourites;Pevonia Renewing Glycocides CreamIf your skin is looking a tad dull and devitalised and you’re forever coveting that ‘insta-glow’, this product is your answer! Which order should you apply your skincare?

Which order should you apply your skincare?

by Jo Boyden on Nov 24 2022
With the ever-growing number of lotions and potions on the market from cleansers to toners, serums to oils, day to night creams and more, it’s no wonder there is confusion around which products are really necessary for our skin, let alone which order you should apply your skincare! Here’s the thing, we all have unique skin needs, dependant on our skin type and concern, so it’s important to create our own skincare ‘cocktail’ based on these specific needs! But if we use the wrong products (not everyone for example can tolerate AHA’s), pair two products together that are formulated with ingredients that don’t ‘gel’, or do not wear our skincare in the correct order, we just won’t see the results we are hoping for, or worse could wind up with blotchy, irritated skin instead. Eek.So to save time, stress and money! We have detailed below the exact order you should apply your skincare so you can get the most out of it! Along with what products and ingredients to use for your skin type and concern too! Cleanser Toner Serum Eye Cream Treatment (eg. Spot) Moisturiser Sunscreen (day) Face Oil (night) Step 1: CLEANSERCleansing daily is essential for skin health and the first step to layering skincare like a pro for optimum results. And despite conflicting views cleansing twice daily is imperative.Firstly, you need to cleanse at night to remove the days dirt, makeup and impurities. Then again in the morning to remove any excess oil and dead cells that are likely to have accumulated on your skin overnight. Without cleansing, your skin will be more prone to breakouts, dehydration, and premature aging. And remember you need a clean, oil and grime free face for all your skincare ingredients to properly absorb into your skin!At night opt for a cleansing oil that literally dissolves makeup (including waterproof!) without stripping your skin then follow with a gentle, creamy cleaner (which you should use in the morning too). For more information on cleansing and how it will improve your skin tenfold click here.Try;ELES Transformation Cleansing Oil - ideal for all skin types it will literally melt away makeup and impurities while maintaining a balanced, hydrated and smoothed complexion.Phytomer Perfect Visage Gentle Cleansing Milk – If you love milky cleansers this is your one! Step 3: SERUMSYou might be wondering if you really need a serum in your skincare routine, but I’m here to tell you why you definitely do!Serums are the heavy lifters when it comes to your skincare routine, they are essentially shots of extremely concentrated nutrients, hydrators and antioxidants that will really amp up your skin’s health as soon as you apply it. Serums actually tend to perform above and beyond many regular skincare products because they are formulated with a higher concentration of targeted active ingredients and have the ability to penetrate deeper into the dermis. So if you want your skin to live its best life don’t skip on the serum! To learn more about why you need a serum and the best anti-ageing serums for every skin type, click here.Try;Phytomer Hydrasea Ultra-Moisturising Polarized Water Serum - the ultimate thirst quencher for dehydrated and devitalised skin.Vie Collection Vita C Concentrated Solution – the best for serious skin brightening. In fact it’s essential we our eye area the same level of TLC as the rest of our face! This step needs to come before your moisturiser because thinner products can’t penetrate thicker products and eye care products tend to be lighter and thinner than moisturisers to compensate for the fragile eye area.Try;Phytomer Pionniere XMF Reset Eye Fluid – anti-ageing wonder cream, perfect for night-time.Vie Collection Chrono Eyes Puffiness – Dark Circles Wrinkle Cream – the best to combat eye ageing, dark circles and under eye puffiness.Pevonia “C” Evolutive Eye Gel - formulated with anti-ageing dynamo Vitamin C and skin saviours’ hyaluronic acid and Ginkgo biloba, this gel is perfect is cooling and soothing congested and puffy peepers.Step 5: MOISTURISERA moisturiser not only infuses your skin with hydration but also helps trap in all of the products underneath it to make the ingredients even more effective. In the morning opt for a lighter, gentle moisturiser that will nourish and hydrate skin but not feel heavy or greasy (after all who wants that!) This is because the oil takes a while to penetrate and treat the skin, so applying it at night gives it time to do its job. Plus you wouldn’t want a face full of oil in the morning just when you want to apply your makeup!Try;Phytomer Rosee Soin Radiance Replenishing Oil – perfect for all skin types this face oil literally does as the bottle says. Beauty Collective - Exfoliation and Sensitive Skin

Exfoliation and sensitive skin, here’s what to do

by Jo Boyden on Nov 04 2022
If you suffer from sensitive skin the idea of exfoliating might scare you. After all you don’t want to exacerbate your already irritated skin, right? The thing is exfoliation should be a crucial part of your regular skincare routine no matter what your skin type or concern. Why? Because it offers a multitude of benefits, from removing dulling dead skin cells, to preventing clogged pores, encouraging cell turnover (so those healthy, new cells can come through) and more! In fact, it’s the one step in your skincare routine which will really help reveal glowy, silky-soft skin! However, before exfoliating your face, you do need to know how often to exfoliate and what exfoliating products will be best suited to your sensitive skin. As experts in skincare, we are here to guide you. Keep reading as we discuss exfoliation and sensitive skin and what it is you should do. Which type of exfoliators are best for sensitive skin? There are three different types of exfoliants – physical (scrubs which contain beads or small grains to manually remove surface debris), chemical (acid exfoliants which chemically dissolve debris) and enzyme (plant or fruit derived exfoliants that generally breaks down the ‘glue’ that hold dead skin cells together shedding old cells). For sensitive skin its essential to avoid scrubbing, this will only irritate already reactive skin and can lead to facial redness. Instead use a mild chemical exfoliator, containing AHA’s (alpha hydroxy acids) such as citric, glycolic and lactic acid, or enzyme exfoliators. These earth-sourced ingredients essentially dissolve dead skin cells as opposed to physically scrubbing them off.Be a little more cautious with exfoliators formulated with BHA’s (beta hydroxy acids) such as salicylic acid. While salicylic is great for acne prone skin it can be too harsh for those this skin sensitivities. How often should you exfoliate if you have sensitive skin?Once a week is fine, if your skin can tolerate it, increasing to two times can be beneficial but don’t rush it! It’s important to be consistent and go slowly to avoid any additional irritation. After all over-exfoliating can compromise your skin’s natural protective barrier – the surface of your skin which has a protective layer of oils and lipids which helps lock in essential moisture and keeps irritants out! What are the best exfoliating products to use on sensitive skin?Phytomer Vegetal Exfoliant with natural enzymesWe highly recommend this very gentle enzyme exfoliant. Perfect for for even the most sensitive or rosacea prone skin types, it uses natural enzymes to encourage cell turnover without scrubbing or irritating skin.“I have the most sensitive skin, so I can’t use exfoliants that contain microbeads or scrubs…this is a great alternative. It sloughs off all of the dead skin cells without ever irritating my skin! I use it once a week at the minimum, and it keeps my face glowing and smooth. It’s the most wonderful exfoliant ever!” Sarah RPevonia Enzymo Spherides Peeling CreamThis mini facial in a jar (literally) will do wonders for all skin types even the most sensitive of skin types. And no don’t let the word ‘peel’ put you off! It combines natural fruit pineapple and papaya enzymes with citric and to gently and effectively eliminate impurities, blackheads, dead cells and toxins and it’s so easy to use! Simply apply a thin layer to cleansed skin, wet your fingertips with warm water (this will help to ‘wake up’ the enzymes) and work the peeling cream with gentle massage movements into skin, leave on for 5 minutes and then thoroughly rinse away. Nothing makes skin feel cleaner, softer, smoother and brighter than this jar of goodness!! Trust me.“Absolutely the best product on the market. Perfect for all skin types and ages. Truly amazing. It’s gentle and effective, skin is left bright and soft.” Lisa W

by Jo Boyden on Oct 27 2022
Fed up with looking at your tired, dull skin in the mirror every morning? Miss that radiant complexion you once had and wonder if it’s possible you’ll ever get it back? Well, you can wonder no more as the answer is yes, and we are here to tell you how! Keep reading as we give you the lowdown on why your complexion is looking so lacklustre and 5 ways you can brighten skin naturally!Firstly though, what exactly is dull skin?Dull skin is skin that lacks radiance. It can appear lacklustre, dry, patchy and even a little rough to touch at times. Dullness can also be accompanied by an uneven skin texture because its less able to reflect light uniformly. Why is your skin looking dull and 6 simple solutions to brighten it Dead skin cells Dull skin is often the result of dead skin cell build up on the skin’s surface. It can happen at any age but is more common as we get older and our body’s ability to naturally shed dead skin cells and replace with new ones decreases!SOLUTION: Exfoliate skin weekly. Twice if your skin tends to be on the oily/combination side.Exfoliation is an essential step to any skincare routine because it’s the most effective way of removing dull, dead skin cells from the skin’s surface, making way for the new cells to come through and pores to remain unclogged. To learn more about exfoliation and the best exfoliators for your skin type click here. Fatigue If you’re feeling fatigued your skin will visibly reflect it by looking pale, dull and devitalized, often accompanied with dark, puffy peepers and exacerbated fine lines too! This is because when we are tired the blood in our body is not flowing efficiently which normally results in a lack of oxygen in the blood.SOLUTION: Use an oxygenating serumPhytomer’s Souffle Marin Energizing Oxygenating Serum is a beautifully lightweight serum that literally coats the skin in pure oxygen, providing the cells with the vivid rejuvenation they need. Formulated with marine extracts, the invigorating, moisturising blend, ensures fresher, more youthful skin with an overall increase in visible radiance. Free radical damage Free radicals (from pollution) can really take its toll on our skin. It damages collagen and stimulates pigment production causing our complexion to look tired and drab.SOLUTION: Introduce Vitamin C into your skincare routineIt can totally transform your skin! Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant and THE go-to ingredient to dramatically brighten skin. For more information on Vitamin C and its multitude of benefits click here. Lack of sleep While you sleep, your skin is active. It’s the time your skin renews and repairs itself. Lack of sufficient sleep means your skin is not able to do this which in turn can dramatically affect its appearance from dull skin to dehydration, blemishes and premature ageing!SOLUTION: Use relaxation enhancing products before bed and try to get more sleep! If you find it hard to relax and fall asleep use products that will not only benefit your skin but calm your mind and senses too!Try Pevonia’s Vitaminic Concentrate. The radical treatment oil for skin lacking lustre, combats dullness and dehydration with a burst of vitamins A and E and Mandarin Essential Oil, so your complexion will look beautifully brighter and rejuvenated by morning. What’s more it has the most amazing aroma which alone helps calm the senses, and even though it’s an oil, it’s fast absorbing so you know it’s doing great stuff to your skin! Lack of water When you don’t drink enough water a day, the amount of water in your skin's surface dramatically declines leaving you with skin that looks deflated and dull instead of visibly plumped.SOLUTION: Replenish dull, dehydrated skin cells with hydration hero Hyaluronic AcidThanks to its sponge like effect, this super skincare ingredient has the ability to hold 1,000 times its weight in moisture, in other words, one gram of hyaluronic acid is able to hold up to six litres of water! Crazy right? And now, thanks to its molecular structure Hyaluronic acid has the ability to deeply penetrate to instantly deliver supple, dewy skin in a matter of seconds! In fact, it literally binds moisture to skin cells to keep skin smooth, firm, plump, and undeniably radiant! We are literally in LOVE with Pevonia’s New Hyaluronic Acid Hydra Mist! This global best-seller is in fact abundant in Hyaluronic acid and Collagen, and acts like a moisture magnet, plumping and firming the skin immediately. Not removing your makeup before bed I’m sure we’ve ALL been guilty of this once or many a time! Especially when we are exhausted after the daily juggle, or perhaps have had one too many and ooh how that bed looks so inviting but removing the days makeup and grime off your face is a must! In fact not cleansing before bed means your skin is unable to regenerate effectively while you sleep, pores clog, and fatigue (ageing!) signs start to appear.SOLUTION: Use a cleanser you’ll LOVEFor a fantastic makeup remover which effectively melts away makeup and grime with minimum effort try Phytomer’s Doux Contour Eye and Lip Waterproof Makeup Remover. Combining the effectiveness of an oil (a trio of oils in fact) and the gentleness of a lotion, this ultra-hydrating makeup remover, eradicates even the most stubborn of lips and eye makeup fast! And my absolute favourite cleanser at the moment is Pevonia’s new CleanRefresh Foaming Oil Cleanser. Its oil formulation transforms into a luscious foamy cleanser on application when mixed with water and it leaves skin feeling fantastically refreshed and beautifully clean without the drying effects that other cleansers can leave. Plus, its subtle scent is just heavenly.
benefits of exfoliation

7 benefits of exfoliation and which exfoliant is best for your skin

by Jo Boyden on Oct 21 2022
While daily cleansing and moisturising is essential for your skin, exfoliating is another step in your skin care routine that you’ll not want to miss! And no, it’s not recommended you exfoliate every day, and how often you do totally depends on your skin’s specific needs, but there is no doubt how important exfoliating is for everyone, even those with sensitive skin. Read on as we talk all things exfoliation, including the many benefits and the best exfoliators to use. What exactly is exfoliation?Your skin naturally sheds dead skin cells to make room for new cells but sometimes, these dead cells don't shed completely. This is where exfoliating becomes paramount. It’s the process of removing these dead skin cells and debris from the surface of your skin using a specific exfoliating product or tool. Without exfoliating skin can become clogged and issues start to arise. What are the different types of exfoliation? There are 3 different types of exfoliators; Physical Exfoliators – these exfoliators which contain beads or small grains to manually remove surface debris. You can use this once or twice weekly and is better suited to combination and oily prone skin. Chemical exfoliators – these exfoliators use acids (AHA’s or BHA’s) such as glycolic and lactic acids that chemically dissolve debris. Enzyme exfoliators – these exfoliators are plant or fruit derived and work more gently than chemical exfoliators. They effectively break down the “glue” that holds dead, dulling skin cells together, in turn shedding those old skin cells and speeding up the skin’s natural exfoliation process at the same time. How often should you exfoliate? The general rule of thumb is to exfoliate once or twice weekly but this also depends on the type of exfoliator you are using as well as your skin type and concern. A physical exfoliator can be used once or twice a week. It is better suited to combination or oily prone skin. A gentle chemical exfoliant may be used daily depending on its strength. Just be sure to listen to your skin! What are the key benefits of exfoliating?Aside from cleansing away dry and dead skin, regular exfoliation increases the skin’s radiance, clarity and youthfulness…and that’s just the start…. It brightens skin As we age our cell turnover slows down and dead skin cells sitting on our skin’s surface can give us a dull, devitalized complexion! Exfoliating is THE one step in your skincare routine that effectively removes this layer of dead skin, restoring your healthy, vibrant glow. It unclogs pores Dead skin sitting on our skin’s surface literally covers our pores, resulting in skin issues such as irritations and blemishes. Exfoliation removes these dead skin cells and ensures pores remain clog free! It prevents acne Dead skin cells clog pores and when our sebaceous glands produce oil, it gets 'stuck' under the dead skin. This causes pimples and even acne because there is nowhere for the oil to go. Exfoliating effectively will unclogs pores therefore reducing the chances of getting these unwanted breakouts! It helps other skincare products to better penetrate skin for optimum results There is little point in splurging on fancy face creams and superlative serums if they are simply going to sit on the surface of your skin! Applying your skincare to a surface of dead skin cells (yuck) is ineffective, that’s because ingredients only work if they can get deep down into the dermis. Often people with dry skin tend to gravitate towards rich, heavy moisturisers not realising that the dryness they feel is in fact a layer of dead skin preventing their moisturiser from absorbing! Regular exfoliating will ensure your products can penetrate your skin, allowing you to reap in the benefits of your regular skincare routine. It stimulates the production of collagen Exfoliating also actually offers anti-aging benefits! As we age our natural collagen production starts to diminish. Exfoliating can actually stimulate our body’s natural ability to produce collagen, helping to keep skin looking plump, hydrated and more youthful! It evens out skin texture Exfoliants break down dry and dead skin while smoothing texture, which means the skin appears to look more uniform over time. It boosts circulation Exfoliation can also help detoxify your skin by increasing blood circulation and promoting lymph flow/drainage by removing toxins as well as dead skin cells. The results, a beautiful instant, rosy flush. What are the best exfoliators according to the BC experts?Phytomer Vegetal Exfoliant with Natural EnzymesGood for SENSITIVE SKINIf you are a sufferer of sensitive skin, we highly recommend this very gentle enzyme exfoliant. It’s a soft exfoliant for even the most sensitive or rosacea prone skin and uses natural enzymes to encourage cell turnover without scrubbing or irritating skin.“I have the most sensitive skin, so I can’t use exfoliants that contain microbeads or scrubs…this is a great alternative. It sloughs off all of the dead skin cells without ever irritating my skin! I use it once a week at the minimum, and it keeps my face glowing and smooth. It’s the most wonderful exfoliant ever!” Sarah R Phytomer Cyfolia Radiance Exfoliating CreamGood for DRY, DULL SKINIf your skin is dry, dull or devitalised, this exfoliant is a must! It does exactly what the name says! It gently exfoliates skin to reveal a truly radiant complexion! It features two organic exfoliants – argan kernels and pomegranate seeds, as well as Algae, Oligomer and Orange water that work together to immediately clear away rough and dull skin for a visibly softer, smoother and brighter complexion after every single application.“I love this product. It does wonders for my dehydrated, dull skin! It has a beautiful texture, is not harsh at all and the results speak for themselves. My skin is so soft and almost glowy after I use it. LOVE” Tina R Pevonia Enzymo Spherides Peeling CreamGood for ALL SKIN TYPESNo matter what your skin type if you are a fan of enzyme exfoliators over physical scrubs you are going to fall in love with this exfoliant. This little beauty (a mini facial in a jar as I call it!) does wonders for the skin. And no don’t let the word ‘peel’ put you off! It combines natural fruit pineapple and papaya enzymes to gently and effectively eliminate impurities, blackheads, dead cells and toxins and it’s so easy to use!

How a great cleanser will improve your skin ten fold

by Jo Boyden on Oct 18 2022
Updated Here at Beauty Collective, we are strong advocates of cleansing; after all it is one of the most effective ways to achieve skin that’s healthier, clearer and more radiant. And while you might think a quick swipe of a face wipe or micellar water might seem sufficient at times (I’m sure we’ve all been tempted to do this after a long day) taking the time to remove your make-up and really clean your skin daily will ensure that you see visible improvements in your complexion day after day, cleanse after cleanse. So, if you want to learn more about the benefits of cleansing and discover why a great cleanser is the foundation to any great skincare routine, keep reading. You’ll even learn about the cleansing tools you might well not be using but definitely should be…Firstly, what exactly is cleansing? The role of a cleanser is to totally remove the days remnants. We are talking everything from makeup, dirt and grime to other skin impurities.Whether your skincare routine consists of two or five products (eight if you’re a lover of the infamous Korean skincare routine) it should always start with a cleanser. Without this step impurities will cling to your skin and dead skin cells will build up. How does cleansing improve your skin? Skin will be clearer and more refined Without regular cleansing your pores will become congested, leading to breakouts and a lacklustre complexion. Washing your face every morning and evening will remove impurities (that have built up as a result of pollutants, bacteria, dead skin cells and sebum), decongest the pores and reveal clearer, healthier skin. Skin will look fresher and brighter While cleansing isn’t able to remove dead skin cells quite like an exfoliator it will help sweep away surface dry and dead skin cells, revealing a fresh layer of skin underneath for a beautifully brighter, natural glow. Skin will be more hydrated, soft, supple and youthful looking Cleansing is more than just cleaning your skin; it’s also the best way to prep your skin for other skincare products. This is because congested pores can not only cause breakouts but also prevent the absorption of other skincare products, cleansing daily will help to clear your pores and ensure that the active ingredients in your moisturisers and serums can penetrate the deeper layers of the skin, hydrating it more effectively. The cleansing tools you might be missingFirst is the humble muslin cloth. They might not be the top of your skincare wishlist, but these unsung heroes are one of the best ways to gently exfoliate your skin daily and ensure product is completely removed. After applying your cleanser, simply soak the muslin cloth in warm water and sweep in upwards motions away from the face to leave your skin looking and feeling, softer and smoother. Secondly for optimum cleansing results use a Facial Cleansing Brush. With this little genius gadget you can get your deepest clean yet as gentle but powerful sonic massage works with ultra-hygienic silicone touchpoints and your chosen cleanser to thoroughly remove any build-up of dead skin cells, dirt, oil and sweat, preventing skin problems and resulting in clean & radiant skin, but that’s not all! It preps your skin perfectly for the absorption of your favourite skincare products for maximum effect and results, the tiny pulses help awaken the skin by stimulating the circulation of blood in the skin’s layers (when the blood is stimulated more oxygen is produced in the blood and this feeds the skin cells) and the cleansing brush will aid in keeping your pores clear from debris banishing those breakouts! For the perfect cleanser it is also essential to find the best facial cleanser for your skin, a product that works with and not against your skin type. For our top recommendations click here.
fuller lips - ELES lipliner

Want fuller looking lips? Here’s how to achieve them with lip liner

by Jo Boyden on Oct 06 2022
If your lips tend to be on the thinner side like mine, getting plumper, fuller lips will likely be something you’ve always wanted. And sure, when it comes to achieving that perfect pout, lip filler can be the answer, but for a natural, non-surgical option (because the idea of needles terrifies me) some strategic lip liner application can help accomplish the same result! And while lip liner, unlike filler, might only a temporary fix, it gives you complete control over what your lips look like every single day.In fact, this once understated product is now a staple for makeup artists, influencers and makeup enthusiasts alike, and we are here to give you some lip liner tips and tricks so you too will fall in love with this trusty product and achieve the fuller lips look you so desire.Firstly though, before we start applying our lip liner, we need to prep our skin. This is important as we don’t want any crepey lips in sight. Tip 1 – exfoliate lipsJust as you exfoliate your face, you want to do so to your lips too! Lips need to be free of dry, flaky skin. Exfoliating also stimulates circulation in your lips which can make them look more voluminous! Just be sure to use a gentle exfoliator and gently remove any excess with a face cloth.Tip 2 - moisturiseNext you want to make sure your lips are well nourished. After applying your moisturiser all over your face, apply a really good lip cream like Phytomer Youth Contour Reviving Wrinkle Correction Cream – Eye and Lips, after all more often than not it is the lines around the lips which can actually be what’s making your lips look thin and aged. Top with a good lip balm and let it seep in for a few minutes.Tip 3 – concealThe last part of the prep involves your concealer! Take a cream or liquid concealer in a shade lighter than your natural lip colour and smooth all over the lips spreading it a little over your natural lip line. You want to blur the edges so that it’s harder to tell where your lip line is. Try ELES Dual Action Concealer. This anti-ageing gem is formulated with vitamin e and marine filling collagen micro-spheres which absorb natural moisture, plumping skin and smoothing the epidermal layer! Next lightly blot your lips to remove excess product.Tip 4 – application in 4 simple stepsNow it’s time for your lip liner! Lip liner not only give lips structure (and volume!) it can act as a primer to help bind lipstick to your lips if you choose to wear it after (I find my lip liner and a little gloss does the trick for me though!)Step 1.To make your lips look bigger, choose a lip liner in a natural skin tone. If you want to use a colourful lipstick, select a lip liner shade that goes well with your chosen lipstick. Step 2.Now take your lip liner and apply it just outside your natural lip line. This will perfectly model your lips and visibly correct any unevenness. Start by outlining your outer corners making your way to the middle (the cupid’s bow). Make sure you take into consideration where the middle of your lips and nose is and use this as your starting point.Step 3.Now use the side of your lip liner to fill in the rest of your lips. You’ll get much smoother results this way. For a smoother transition, put less pressure on the pencil as you would when you are doing the outer line.Step 4. Finally for that little extra cushioned effect apply a highlighter on your cupids bow. Try ELES Stick Illuminator.Finish with a sweep of lipstick or a lip plumping gloss.Voila! Follow all of these steps and achieve fuller lips instantly!

5 products to best treat dark spots

by Jo Boyden on Sep 22 2022
We might well be lucky to live in a country known for its breathtaking beaches, beautiful bushland and endless summer sun (well the latter could be debatable right now!) but unfortunately growing up in Australia can reap havoc on our skin, and as we age hyperpigmentation can start to form.Otherwise known as dark spots, age spots, sunspots and uneven skin tone, hyperpigmentation is a very common skin condition, especially in warmer climates. Why? Because it is mainly triggered by overexposure to the sun. UV light speeds up the production of melanin, a natural pigment that gives our skin its colour. On skin that has had years of sun exposure, hyperpigmentation appears when melanin becomes clumped or is produced in high concentrations. What’s worse, these dark spots are then typically perceived as ‘aged skin’ and can in turn make you look 10 years older. Eek!The phenomenon affects both men and women and can occur in all skin tones and types. Unfortunately, sun exposure isn’t the only trigger though! Other triggering factors include genetics, pregnancy, the use of photo-sensitizing products, medication, lifestyle choices, acne and scarring and hormonal changes! So, what exactly is the solution? How do we prevent these dark spots from forming? Or if we are already suffering from hyperpigmentation what are the best treatments to get rid of it?While there is no quick fix to eliminate this condition, there are definitely methods you can take to help dark spots fade.Firstly though, wearing sunscreen daily, all year round is essential. Studies have shown that sunscreen by itself will not only help prevent dark spots from forming but can help in preventing the exacerbation of already existing hyperpigmentation.Secondly during the year, especially at the change of season, it’s best to use skincare products that inhibit the overproduction of melanin. Ingredients such as vitamin c will do just this. Finally, look for products specially designed to fade hyperpigmentation. Here are our top 5 product recommendations;Pevonia Vitamin C ComplexeWhile vitamin C has many benefits from boosting collagen to helping heal blemishes, it can also help reduce hyperpigmentation (and give your skin an all-out glow!)Pevonia’s Vitamin C Complexe is formulated with both vitamin C and hydration hero hyaluronic acid that work together to quite literally drench skin with repairing antioxidants, deeply nourishing skin while correcting photo-damage. The lightweight, refining face serum diminishes the appearance of uneven hyperpigmentation, acne and enlarged pores making skin appear younger and healthier.Medicalia L-Retinol Smoothing CreamAnother go-to ingredient when it comes to fighting hyperpigmentation is retinol. 7 reasons you are suffering from sensitive skin and how to fix it

by Jo Boyden on Sep 02 2022
Whether you’ve always been prone to sensitive skin or have suddenly started to suffer from inflammation, we feel you. Unfortunately, a number of factors can affect our skin and lead to common skin sensitivities but there are steps you can take overcome this! From the weather and our environment to the water and what we eat, read on as we count down 7 sensitive skin triggers and the best products to counteract them! Firstly, though what is sensitive skin exactly?Contrary to popular belief sensitive skin isn’t actually a skin type. Unlike dry, normal, oily and combination skin, sensitive skin is not determined by how much sebum a person's skin produces, in fact those who have dry or oily skin types can also have sensitive skin! Sensitive skin instead refers to a range of conditions, from facial redness, rashes, broken capillaries and inflammation to burning sensations, itchiness and breakouts! And yes, you might be thinking that most people are likely to have at least some sort of skin reaction in their lives whether it be to a product or ingredient for example, those with persistent issues are classified as having sensitive skin. What are the triggers for sensitive skin? and the best way to treat it? The weather Harsh weather conditions be it low temperatures, strong winds and extreme heat can strip the skin’s natural protective barrier compromising our complexion as water escapes and irritants get in! Skin can look and feel irritated from redness and itchiness to inflammation.Solution: While we can’t change the weather (although often wish we could!) you can turn down the heating in the winter and lay of the air conditioning unit in the summer. Also inflamed skin needs calming, so look for products with soothing ingredients like calendula, chamomile aloe and azulene extract.Try; Pevonia’s Sensitive Skin Line. Comprising of a cleanser, lotion, moisturiser and serum, this best-selling collection effectively controls sensitivity, soothes skin irritation and diffusing redness. Over exposure to the sun Ten minutes in the sun and before you know it you are looking and feeling somewhat flushed in the face! This is because UV rays from the sun triggers oxidative stress and inflammation in the skin.Solution: Integrate abroad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher into your daily routine (yes that’s right daily, even in winter!) Fragrance-free and natural sunscreen formulated with titanium dioxide and zinc oxide are best, oh and wear a hat too!Try: Medicalia Sunscreen SPF 40 with Blue Light Shield. A true triple threat, this smooth, tinted sunscreen contains an exclusive mineral formula including both zinc and iron oxides to shield skin from harmful sun rays, blue light AND pollution! It delivers all-natural protection with the addition of zinc oxide which acts to form a protective seal over the skin to reflect blue light away. It rubs into skin seamlessly without leaving a white cast or greasy residue behind. And even better, the formula is reef-safe and works for all skin types and tones. So worth the investment in my books! Taking hot (not warm) showers We all love a hot shower or indulgent bubble bath, especially on a cold winters night but this luxury can lead to taut, itchy, uncomfortable skin – all common signs of sensitivity.Solution: it’s simple enough switch to lukewarm water or at least turn the heat down! Always use a gentle cleanser and apply a nourishing moisturiser packed with ceramides as soon as you come out.Try Medicalia Gentle cleanser. Formulated with a unique natural blend of soothing Green Tea, Chamomile, and Oat Amino-Acids it beautifully cleanses skin both thoroughly and gently while preserving the skin barrier and reducing symptoms of inflammation! Additives in skincare and cosmetics It doesn’t matter what you seem to put on your skin, it reacts! This is because people with sensitive skin typically have a much weaker, thinner and more easily damaged skin barrier making it easier for irritants to penetrate the skin and cause unwanted inflammation!Solution: Don’t overload your skin with multiple products or use skincare with harsh ingredients. Opt for gentle and hypoallergenic formulations specifically designed to address sensitive and reactive skin and always use mineral makeup as it contains no chemical nasties and will allow skin to breath freely.Try; Phytomer Douceur Intemporelle Restorative Shield Cream. Over exfoliated skin

8 signs of over-exfoliated skin and how to treat it

by Jo Boyden on Aug 26 2022
We all know the importance of exfoliation, it’s the key to beautiful, clear skin after all. It helps to renew cells, unclog pores, prevent acne, even skin tone, boost circulation, stimulate collagen synthesis and more! But how often should you be exfoliating exactly? And how do you know if you’ve overdone it? Sadly, sometimes too much of a good thing can be bad, and in the case of over exfoliating, it can be detrimental to your skin! Read on as we reveal 8 signs that your skin has been over exfoliated and how to fix it! Instead of being blemish free, you’re suddenly prone to breakouts! While exfoliating is a great way to prevent pimples as it keeps pores unclogged, over exfoliating will strip your skin of its natural moisture which then prompts your sebaceous glands to product more oil to compensate for the loss of hydration! When skin starts to product this excess oil, pores can clog, and blemishes start to form! Your skin is looking shiny Your complexion tends to be dehydrated, not oily yet your face is constantly shiny? If this is you, you need to lay off the over-exfoliating! Light reflects off of over-exfoliated skin easily thanks to the ultra-smooth surface you’ve created this in turn makes the skin appear shinier! Your skin feels tight When you over-exfoliate you can compromise the skin’s natural barrier function. This leads to an increase in TEWL (transepidermal water loss) and a tight feeling in your skin. You feel as though you’ve been sunburnt Redness and itchiness, much like sunburn, are one of the most common signs of excessive exfoliation. This happens because the top layer of your skin which acts like a shield against pollutants, irritants and allergens is compromised. When it’s compromised your skin becomes more susceptible to irritants and free radical damage hence the reaction! Your skin is looking flaky The natural oils that your skin produces, helps your skin to retain its natural hydration levels. Excess scrubbing though can sadly strip the skin of these oils creating a parched complexion with a flaky appearance. Your skin is dry If you’ve noticed dry patches on your face, it might not be because you aren’t using enough moisturiser, instead over-exfoliation can significantly cause dry, crepy skin, worse still peeling. Ease off the exfoliation so to not exacerbate the situation. How to fix over-exfoliated skin Firstly, eliminate foaming cleansers (which can be drying and exacerbate existing issues), retinol products (which can be too harsh to use on compromised skin), and, of course, any physical or chemical exfoliators.Next incorporate a vitamin c serum into your routine as this can soothe and help to expedite the healing process. This little genius gadget you can get your deepest clean yet as gentle but powerful sonic massage works with ultra-hygienic silicone touchpoints and your chosen cleanser to thoroughly remove any build-up of dead skin cells, dirt, oil and sweat, preventing skin problems and resulting in clean & radiant skin, But that’s not all! It preps your skin perfectly for the absorption of your favourite skincare products for maximum effect and results, the tiny pulses help awaken the skin by stimulating the circulation of blood in the skin’s layers (when the blood is stimulated more oxygen is produced in the blood and this feeds the skin cells) and the cleansing brush will aid in keeping your pores clear from debris banishing those breakouts!Next you can start to exfoliate again, (once or twice a week no more) using a gentle or enzyme exfoliator.Try Phytomer’s Vegetal Exfoliant with Natural Enzymes. It’s a soft exfoliant for even the most sensitive or rosacea prone skin and uses natural enzymes to encourage cell turnover without scrubbing or irritating your skin. If you do love a granular scrub though opt for a gentle version like Pevonia’s Gentle Exfoliating Cleanser. skincare mistakes

10 skincare mistakes you could be making and how to fix them

by Jo Boyden on Aug 19 2022
You’re a stickler when it comes to your skincare routine, you eat an antioxidant rich diet, drink plenty of water and make sure you exercise daily, yet still your skin is dull and lifeless, or perhaps you’re finding yourself constantly prone to pesky pimples, or dryness even? If this is you, chances are you could be doing a few things wrong when it comes to your skincare and believe me, you’d not be the first! Keep reading as we count down 10 common skincare mistakes you may well be making and how to fix them! You are overloading your skin From cleansers to exfoliators, serums, moisturisers, masks, oils and more, it is easy to get carried away with skincare and believe that buying and applying all the products will be best for your skin! The problem is overloading it, particularly when you are using too many actives in your products can actually be detrimental and result in dryness, irritation and redness! The fix: Listen to your skin! The best approach is to understand your own individual needs rather than just adding layers of products because you are under the misconception that using them all will deliver optimum skin results! Remember if you are prone to sensitive skin simplicity is key, if you have an oily complexion cleansing, toning and a light mattifying moisturiser can be enough, and if your skin tends to be on the dry side, then a serum, moisturiser, mist and face oil to lock moisture in will be beneficial. Also, if you are adding in new steps to your skincare routine, do so one product at a time so that your skin has time to adjust. You are using toxic ingredients You think you’ve invested in a moisturiser that will deliver beautifully bright and blemish free results but it’s actually packed with toxins that can irritate skin, leading to reactions and more! Sadly, the products you put on your skin aren’t always safe. So many skincare products are formulated with toxic ingredients including Parabens, Phthalates, Triclosan, chemical sunscreen filter and synthetic fragrance. The fix: Choose natural skincare products, they’ll contain zero toxic nasties and always be aware of what you are buying, don’t just fall for the marketing hype! You aren’t updating your skincare as your skin changes with age You might have been loyal to the same moisturiser for many years but sadly the skincare you’ve used in your 20’s really won’t cut it in your 30’s, 40’s and beyond. This is because as we age our skin’s needs dramatically change. Skin becomes thinner, drier, more sensitive, and loses elasticity as collagen and elastin start to deplete, while fine lines and wrinkles start to form. The fix: As you start to age look for anti-ageing skincare rich in ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, collagen, and vitamin C. For more info on this read about the top 5 skincare ingredients as recommended by the experts and adjust your products accordingly. You are skipping your moisturiser because your skin is oily or prone to blemishes It’s that time of the month and a few pesky pimples have reared their ugly head, or you are often prone to adult acne or simply suffer from oily skin, so think it best to lay off the moisturiser which must be exacerbating the issue right? Wrong. The fix: While you are likely not alone in thinking lathering up on moisturiser seems counterproductive, everyone, no matter what your skin type or concern, needs to apply a moisturiser daily! This is because moisturiser maintains skin hydration throughout the day and therefore assists in fighting premature fine lines and wrinkles too. In fact, applying moisturiser will greatly reduce your chance of developing extreme dryness, skin sensitivity, or oiliness! Why? Dehydrated skin can lead to issues like inflammation, premature skin ageing, and even breakouts. When your skin becomes dry, your body responds by making more oil! And we all know excess oil can clog pores leading to more of those darn pesky pimples. When searching for the right moisturiser for your skin type they do tend to be categorised by skin concern so you just need to research and find the right one for your skin’s needs. Just be sure to opt for lighter moisturisers by day, especially in the warmer months, and richer creams at night. For oily skin types, we highly recommend Phytomer’s Oligopur Hydra Matifying Control Cream. It’s an ultra-light cream that controls oil and breakthrough shine throughout the day. No shine, no greasy feeling, no heaving feeling! If your skin is prone to pimples try Phytomer Acnipure Blemish Solution Fluid, it’s a lightweight gel-cream that fights acne without clogging pores or irritating skin. It also helps eliminate shine, diminishes the appearance of blemishes, and prevents future breakouts!! You are over exfoliating or not exfoliating enough As we age our skin’s natural ability to shed dead cells declines, our pores can get clogged and skin can become uneven, dull, lacklustre and spotty even! This is why exfoliation is so imperative, and not a step that should be ignored even if you are prone to acne or suffer from sensitive skin!I’m not talking daily exfoliation though! Just once or twice a week depending on your skin type will suffice, as too much exfoliation can be counterproductive! This is because exfoliators, especially physical ones with granules or beads can damage the outer most layer of your skin when overused. One sign of over exfoliating is skin hypersensitivity. This can cause irritation, breakouts, and even a stinging feeling when you apply products! Eek.The fix: Understand your skin and choose your exfoliator accordingly. We highly recommend Pevonia’s Clarigel Exfoliating Cleanser for blemish prone skin. It combines soapwort, Triclosan, Grapefruit Oil, Salicylic Acid and Citric Acid with Jojoba to gently remove impurities and delivers an intense exfoliating and deep cleansing experience! If your skin is a little on the sensitive side, just be sure to opt for a super gentle formula – I LOVE Pevonia’s Gentle Exfoliating Cleanser, it gently polishes your skin with its unique creamy, granular texture. But if granules scare you, I also highly recommend Phytomer’s Vegetal Exfoliant with Natural Enzymes. It’s a soft exfoliant for even the most sensitive or rosacea prone skin and uses natural enzymes to encourage cell turnover without scrubbing or irritating your skin. You are not wearing sunscreen daily, all year round It’s easy to think why bother with sunscreen if we are in the middle of winter but as I’ve preached many a time before, sunscreen isn’t just a summertime skincare product, it’s necessary to religiously wear it All. Year. Round. Why? Because it is THE best protection against skin ageing. Oh, and if you are staying indoors, and happen to work next to a window like me, the sun has the ability to penetrate the glass and your skin too!And then there is the issue of blue light damage. To read all about it click here. But in short, just like the sun, your devices omit harmful ‘blue light’ rays, so it’s important to wear sunscreen to protect skin against them too!The fix: Sunscreens formulated with iron oxides provide enhanced protection against blue light, especially when combined with zinc oxide. A new favourite of mine is Medicalia’s Sunscreen SPF 30 with Blue Light Shield. If you’re a little reluctant to wear your sunscreen because quite frankly its smell and greasy texture puts you off, you are going to love this lightweight emulsion! This everyday sunscreen contains an exclusive mineral formula to shield skin from harmful sun rays, blue light and pollution. It delivers all-natural protection with the addition of zinc oxide which acts to form a protective seal over the skin to reflect blue light away. It also rubs into skin seamlessly without leaving a white cast or greasy residue behind. And even better, the formula is reef-safe and works for all skin types and tones! You are taking daily hot showers and baths Who doesn’t love soaking in a boiling bubble bath or indulging in a long hot shower every evening? But do you know how detrimental this actually is for your skin? Hot showers and baths can actually inflame the skin, causing redness, itching, and even peeling. They also can disrupt the skin's natural balance of moisture, robbing you of the natural oils that keep skin healthy. Eek.The Fix: To keep skin happy, healthy and supple, reduce time spent in the shower or bath, keep water to a warm temperature and always apply moisturiser immediately after while skin is still damp. By doing so will prevent damage, dryness, irritation, and itchiness. You are not using your retinol cream correctly We all know retinol is THE no. one ingredient when it comes to combatting skin ageing. The hero ingredient multi tasks like no other. Known for its ability to empower and enhance skin cellular performance it dramatically improves fine lines and wrinkles while repairing sun-damaged and mature skin. It’s also a free radical fighter! Who wouldn’t want to introduce this multitasking miracle ingredient into their daily life! But you need to know how to use it! Using it incorrectly can unfortunately have ramifications. The fix: Because retinol is unstable when exposed to heat and light avoid using it in your morning skincare routine, instead apply before bed. I'll ntroduce it slowly. Apply it only at night, one or two times a week for the first week and gradually increase application. Also it’s best not to layer your retinol cream with other potent ingredients such as your acids. And finally, give the product time to work its magic. This could take a few months, but the results are worth it. We promise! To learn more about this anti-ageing wonder ingredient click here. You are mixing skincare ingredients that are no compatible I’m certain many of us will have mixed our skincare products without knowing that some ingredients do not complement each other, in fact some combinations can actually counteract each other! These ingredients such as vitamin C, retinol, benzoyl peroxide, AHA’s and BHA’s are simply better suited on their own and can be detrimental to skin when mixed or layered leading to irritation, redness or just general lack of desired results! (Unless of course they’ve been carefully placed in the same product by the clever scientists!)The fix: Let your retinol, vitamin c, benzoyl peroxide, AHA’s and BHA’s be the star of their own show. This doesn’t mean you can’t use your retinol cream and your vitamin c serum! Just use the serum in the morning and your retinol cream at night! Also focus on the combinations that can be mixed! These include; Hyaluronic acid and most ingredients! SPF and vitamin c, AHA’s and BHA’s, vitamin c and vitamin e, retinol and SPF. You are not cleansing your face before bed I’m sure we’ve ALL been guilty of this once or many a time! Especially when we are exhausted after the daily juggle, or perhaps have had one too many and ooh how that bed looks so inviting but removing the days makeup and grime off your face is a must! In fact not cleansing before bed means your skin is unable to regenerate effectively while you sleep, pores clog, and fatigue (ageing!) signs start to appear. The fix: For a fantastic makeup remover which effectively melts away makeup and grime with minimum effort try Phytomer’s Doux Contour Eye and Lip Waterproof Makeup Remover. Plus its subtle scent is just heavenly. To read more about sleeping in makeup and what it really does to our skin click here.
