8 ingredients your sensitive skin should avoid

If you have sensitive skin, you already know it can feel like everything is a potential trigger. That new “gentle, nourishing, and dermatologist-tested” product that sounded so ideal for your easily irritated complexion, turned out to be not-so-gentle after all, leaving you with a red, stinging face!

The thing is, sensitive skin is often the result of a thinner or compromised skin barrier. This means irritants, allergens, and harsh actives can sneak in far more easily than they would for someone with a more resilient complexion.

What makes it even trickier is that the culprits aren’t always obvious. In fact, many of the ingredients most likely to trigger sensitivity are hiding in plain sight! Even in products marketed specifically for "sensitive" skin!

That’s why becoming confident at reading ingredient labels is one of the most valuable skincare skills you can have. Knowing what to leave out of your routine is just as important as knowing what to include. And once you understand which ingredients tend to cause trouble, caring for sensitive skin becomes so much easier, we promise!

To help you shop smarter and keep your complexion calm, we’ve rounded up the top ingredient’s experts agree sensitive skin should always avoid.

What your sensitive skin really means

Sensitive skin isn’t just a “type”, it’s a condition. At its core, it usually comes down to a compromised skin barrier, which means your skin isn’t as strong or resilient as it should be. As a result, it reacts more easily to ingredients, environmental stress, and even changes in routine.

This is why products that work beautifully for others can cause redness, stinging, breakouts, or inflammation for you. The goal with sensitive skin isn’t to overload it with actives, it’s to protect, strengthen, and support it!

The 8 ingredients to avoid

From strong fragrances to overly drying alcohols, there are a few common ingredients that can make sensitive skin worse without you realising it.

1. Fragrance (synthetic & natural)

Fragrance is one of the most common triggers for sensitive skin and one of the easiest to overlook! It’s often listed as “parfum” or “aroma” and can even include essential oils.

Why avoid it:
Fragrance can cause irritation, redness, and allergic reactions, especially with repeated use. Even natural fragrance isn’t always gentle on reactive skin.

2. Denatured alcohol (Alcohol Denat.)

Not all alcohols are bad but denatured alcohol is one your skin could definitely do without!

Why avoid it:
It strips the skin of its natural oils, weakens the barrier, and can leave your skin feeling tight, dry, and more prone to irritation.

3. Essential Oils

While they sound calming and natural, essential oils can be surprisingly reactive for sensitive skin.

Why avoid them:
Ingredients like citrus oils, peppermint, and eucalyptus can trigger redness and sensitivity, particularly in already compromised skin.

4. Exfoliating acids (overuse of AHAs/BHAs)

Exfoliation is important, we know this but with sensitive skin, more is definitely not more!

Why be cautious:
Over-exfoliating can damage the skin barrier, leading to increased redness, irritation, and sensitivity. Strong acids or frequent use can quickly tip your skin out of balance.

5. Sulphates (SLS & SLES)

These are commonly found in cleansers and are responsible for that foamy, “squeaky clean” feeling.

Why avoid them:
They can be overly stripping, removing essential moisture and leaving the skin barrier vulnerable and irritated, not good when you already have a compromised skin barrier!

6. Strong retinol and retinoids

Retinol and retinoids can be outstanding when it comes to ageing but are very powerful! Therefore, they need to be approached very carefully if your skin is sensitive.

Why be cautious:
They can cause peeling, dryness, and irritation, particularly if introduced too quickly or used in high strengths.

7. High-Concentration Vitamin C (L-Ascorbic Acid)

Vitamin C is a glow-boosting favourite, but not all forms are suitable for sensitive skin.

Why be cautious:
High concentrations can be too stimulating, leading to stinging and redness. Gentler derivatives are often a better option.

Look for vitamin C serums formulated with a gentle derivative such as sodium ascorbyl phosphate, magnesium ascorbyl phosphate or Tetrahexyldecyl ascorbate, these vitamin C forms are considered more stable and less irritating.

8. Artificial Colours & Dyes

These are often added purely for aesthetic reasons — and your skin doesn’t need them.

Why avoid them:
They offer no skin benefit and can increase the risk of irritation or allergic reactions.

What skincare ingredients your sensitive skin does need

Instead of focusing only on what to avoid, it’s equally important to prioritise ingredients that will support and strengthen your skin barrier. These include;

Niacinamide (Vitamin B3)

Niacinamide enhances the skin’s natural barrier by increasing the production of ceramides, which are essential for locking in moisture and protecting the skin from environmental stressors. Niacinamide is also known for its anti-inflammatory properties, making it a great choice for those with sensitive, rosacea or acne-prone skin. It helps to calm redness and irritation, leading to a clearer, more even complexion.

Ceramides

When you suffer from sensitive or easily reactive skin, ceramides can be especially beneficial. They help to protect, repair and strengthen your skins barrier, shielding it from external aggressors such as harsh weather conditions, bacteria and pollutants. This helps reduce skin redness, irritation and sensitivity. Ceramides also help your skin hold onto moisture. They act like little sponges, preventing water loss and keeping your skin hydrated and plump!

Hyaluronic acid

Hyaluronic acid is a powerful hydrating ingredient that attracts and retains moisture within the skin. For sensitive skin, maintaining hydration is key to keeping the barrier strong and functioning optimally. By drawing water into the skin, it helps to reduce dryness, tightness and discomfort, leaving the complexion feeling soft, smooth and comfortably hydrated without causing irritation.

Panthenol (Vitamin B5)

Panthenol is a deeply soothing and restorative ingredient that works to calm irritation while supporting the skin’s natural repair process. It helps to strengthen the skin barrier, improve hydration levels, and reduce redness, making it particularly beneficial for compromised or reactive skin. It also leaves the skin feeling soft, supple, and more resilient over time.

Calming botanicals (like White Water Lily (Nymphaea Alba), Chamomile, Centella Asiatica, Cucumber & Aloe Vera)

Calming botanicals are essential for soothing sensitive skin and reducing visible signs of irritation. Ingredients such as White Water Lily, centella asiatica, chamomile, and aloe vera work to gently calm inflammation, minimise redness, and provide lightweight hydration. They help restore balance to the skin, leaving it feeling comforted, refreshed, and more stable.

All these ingredients help calm irritation, restore hydration, and build resilience over time.
