Our skin is filled with thousands of pores – tiny openings that serve two main purposes; to release sebum (our skin’s natural oil) as well as sweat from our glands. Both very important functions and essential for our skin’s health. Sweating helps maintain a regulated body temperature while the oil helps naturally moisturise our skin and provides an important protective barrier.

Many of us however experience enlarged pores especially around the nose and cheeks which can be very frustrating. Unfortunately, we can’t actually get rid of our pores or change their size, but we can minimise their appearance by following a tailored skincare plan, incorporating pore minimising products into our daily routine.

FAQs

What causes enlarged pores?

While pore size is largely determined by genetics there are a number of other factors that also play a role in making our pores look bigger, these include age, sun exposure and skin type. Those who have inherited naturally oily skin are likely to have large pores because they are more actively releasing oil through wider openings. Also, if oil, toxins, dirt, and makeup collect in the pore, they can weigh it down and stretch it!

And as we age the skin around our pores become less elastic as our bodies start to produce less elastin and collagen (the proteins that actually strengthen the walls of our pores making them tighter). Producing less collagen and elastin means our skin becomes much less supple and starts to sag, this in turn can cause pores to expand and become enlarged.  To make matters worse, when these enlarged pores become clogged with oil and dead skin cells, blackhead and whiteheads may form. When bacteria comes in contact with these two, a pimple is born!

Which Beauty Collective products work best for minimising pores?

Beauty Collective have a range of products for enlarged pores which will not only help reduce the appearance of pore size but leave you with smooth and even skin too!

Our go-to is Pevonia’s Age Correction Micro-Pores Refine Cream. It’s a mattifying treatment cream which reduces oil production and pore size, while providing long-lasting hydration at the same time. The result – a smoother, flawless complexion free of shine!

However, to maintain healthy skin and refined pores you need to also consider your entire skincare routine. Cleansers and exfoliators are paramount to keep pores unclogged. Look for cleansers and exfoliators formulated with AHA’s (Alpha Hydroxy Acids) such as Citric Acid, Glycolic Acid and Lactic Acid, and/or BHA’s (Beta Hydroxy Acids) such as Salicylic acid. These are the holy grail of ingredients when it comes to penetrating and cleaning out your clogged pores (which can make pores look enlarged) by unblocking them you are already halfway there in terms of reducing their size. Vie Collection’s Renewing Exfoliating Cream is designed to make the skin look renewed, radiant and youthful as it smoothes away roughness while dramatically reducing large pores

Also make sure you wear sunscreen every single day. Beauty Collective have an extensive range of sunscreen for face which includes makeup with SPF to protect the skin from harmful UV rays. The number one cause of premature skin ageing is the sun. The less we wear sunscreen the sooner our collagen will break down causing skin to sag and pores to expand!

Introducing a retinol cream at night will be a game changer when it comes to enlarged pores too. Hailed THE anti-ageing ingredient of the skincare world, retinol is known to not only slow down the signs of ageing (as a result of its ability to increase your skin’s collagen production) but also simultaneously decrease oil production which leads to smoother skin, fewer breakouts and tighter pores. Just be sure to opt for a more gentle retinol cream and slowly introduce it into your skincare routine as some can be a little sensitive to it at first, but the wait is worth it.

Why does my makeup make my pores look bigger?
Unfortunately, our makeup can also impact our pore size! Foundations and powders settle into our pores over the course of the day making them appear larger. Mineral makeup is the best makeup for large pores. The products are non-comedogenic meaning they won’t clog your pores.

ELES Cosmetics have a range of best-selling mineral makeup products free of any pore clogging ingredients so perfect for all skin types.
