And with so much conflicting advice online, it's no wonder so many of us aren't quite sure how or when to use a face oil, or even if it’s necessary at all! But during winter, after travel or whenever your skin feels particularly dry or stressed, it can provide an extra boost of nourishment.   Are you applying your face oil in the right order? This is probably the question we get asked most! Face oil should almost always be the last step in your skincare routine, after your serum and moisturiser. Why? Because oil creates a protective layer over the skin, helping to reduce moisture loss. If you apply it before your water-based serums or moisturiser, it can make it harder for those products to absorb properly. A simple daily routine would include a cleanser, toner (if using), serum, moisturiser and finally your face oil.   Should you use a face oil in the morning or at night? The answer is... either! Many people prefer applying a face oil at night, allowing it to nourish and replenish the skin while they sleep. However, if your skin feels particularly dry or you're after a healthy, radiant glow, a lightweight face oil can also work beautifully during the day beneath sunscreen and makeup. You can even add a drop or two to your makeup!   Can oily or acne-prone skin use a face oil? Absolutely! This is one of the biggest misconceptions about face oils sadly! So many people with oily, combination or blemish prone skin miss out of this essential step because they believe a face oil will only exacerbate their oily, reactive skin. The key is choosing a lightweight, non-comedogenic formula that's suited to your skin type! In fact, stripping oily skin with harsh products can often make matters worse, causing the skin to produce even more oil to compensate. The right face oil can actually help support a healthier skin barrier and improve overall skin balance.   Can you use a face oil every day? Yes. If your skin enjoys it, a face oil can absolutely become part of your daily skincare routine. The best approach is to listen to your skin!   Can you use a face oil with retinol? Yes, and they actually work beautifully together! Retinol can sometimes leave skin feeling dry or tight, particularly when you're first introducing it into your routine. Applying a face oil after your moisturiser can help comfort the skin and reduce moisture loss without affecting your retinol. It is best not to mix your retinol and facial oil together unless the brand specifically advises doing so, as this can make it harder to control how much retinol you are applying. If you are new to retinol or your skin is sensitive, introduce it slowly and avoid layering too many active products in the same routine. Facial oil may make the skin feel more comfortable, but it will not prevent irritation caused by using retinol too frequently or at too high a strength.   Can you mix face oil with foundation? You certainly can! Mixing one small drop of face oil into your liquid foundation can help create a fresher, more radiant finish, particularly if your makeup tends to look dry or cakey during winter. Just don't overdo it, too much oil can reduce the longevity of your makeup.   How many drops should you use? Remember less is always more. You're rushing your skin prep This is one of the biggest mistakes people make. After applying your skincare, it's tempting to jump straight into foundation. But if your moisturiser or serum hasn't had time to absorb, makeup can slide around, pill or separate throughout the day. It feels counterintuitive in winter but UV exposure continues year-round and is one of the biggest drivers of the uneven, dull skin tone that makes foundation look worse. An SPF underneath your makeup is non-negotiable. Mist throughout the day. A hydrating facial mist spritzed over your finished makeup not only refreshes your look midday but adds a layer of hydration that helps everything sit better. Look for one with hyaluronic acid or rosewater rather than a setting spray, which can be drying. Less powder, more pressing. In winter, powder is your makeup's enemy. Use as little as possible, apply only where you genuinely need it, and press rather than sweep it on to avoid disturbing the layers underneath. Warm your products before applying. Cold foundation applied straight from a cool bathroom applies less evenly than product that's been warmed slightly between your fingertips first. Many of us notice what feels like sudden changes from increased dryness and fine lines that seem deeper than they were last week, to a loss of glow, new pigmentation, or just a general tiredness that no amount of concealer seems to fix! And it can feel incredibly frustrating when you’ve been vigilantly looking after your skin too! But here's the reassuring part, your skin likely hasn't suddenly aged overnight. While natural ageing is of course inevitable, when changes seem to happen all at once, it's usually a combination of factors that have gradually been building beneath the surface! Dehydration, accumulated sun damage, slower skin renewal, collagen loss, stress, poor sleep and even a weakened skin barrier can all make your complexion appear older than it really is. Fortunately, many of these changes can be significantly improved with the right skincare and a few simple lifestyle adjustments. Keep reading to discover the 8 most common reasons your skin may suddenly look older, and more importantly, what you can do about it!   1. Your skin is dehydrated One of the quickest ways for skin to appear older is dehydration. When your skin lacks water, it loses its natural plumpness. Fine lines become more obvious, your complexion can appear dull and tired, and your skin may feel tight or rough. And even if you naturally have oily skin, you too can become dehydrated! What to do If you haven’t already introduce a hydrating serum rich in hyaluronic acid into your daily skincare routine. Hyaluronic acid is one of skincare's most effective hydrating ingredients, capable of attracting and holding up to 1,000 times its weight in water to help plump the skin and smooth the appearance of dehydration lines. As soon as you've applied it, follow with a nourishing moisturiser to lock in that hydration. Creams rich in ceramides are particularly beneficial as they help strengthen the skin barrier and reduce moisture loss throughout the day. While exfoliating to remove the build-up of dead skin cells is important for maintaining a healthy glow, be careful not to overdo it. And even if you've always been sensible in the sun and have never spent hours sunbathing, it's important to remember that UV damage is cumulative. Everyday exposure while driving, walking the dog, sitting near windows or enjoying your morning coffee outdoors all adds up over time. The problem is that UV rays gradually break down the collagen and elastin that keep skin firm and supple, while also stimulating excess melanin production. The result? More wrinkles, less elasticity and those frustrating dark spots (or should we say, sun spots!) that seem to appear out of nowhere. Your skin barrier may be damaged If your favourite products suddenly seem to have stopped working, your skin barrier could be struggling. The skin barrier is your skin's protective shield. Stress is affecting your skin more than you realise I’m sure there is not one of us who doesn’t get stressed, some of us daily with the mental load that live brings, but stress doesn't just affect how we feel, it unfortunately can affect our skin too!
