Feeling stressed? The beauty essentials your skin needs
by Jo Boyden
on Oct 17 2025
Tired of the constant "go, go, go"? Whether it's work deadlines, family chaos, or just the general overwhelm of life, we're all carrying stress, and when you’re stressed, I can bet your bottom dollar your skin is feeling it too! Dryness? Dullness? Irritation? Pesky pimples even? They can all be a sign that you’re over doing it, but what if your daily beauty routine could double as a stress-relief ritual? That’s right, by being armed with the right products, you can turn stress into self-care and bring back your skin’s natural glow!
From soothing sensory oils to creams that leave your skin instantly comforted, keep reading to discover 8 of our favourite beauty essentials designed not just to pamper your complexion, but to calm your senses and reset your mood too. Think of them as your very own little at-home spa kit!
Why your skin feels stress too
Before we get to the products, it’s important to understand what’s really going on beneath the surface. Your skin and your stress levels are more connected than you might think! When you're stressed, your body produces cortisol, which can trigger inflammation, breakouts, and accelerated ageing. It's a vicious cycle, stress affects your skin, and problematic skin creates more stress. Eek.
But here's where it gets interesting. Engaging your senses through beauty rituals, whether it's the soothing scent of lavender, the cooling sensation of a face mask, or the gentle massage of applying serum, actually activates your parasympathetic nervous system. That's your body's "rest and digest" mode, essentially telling your brain that it’s safe to slow down and relax now.
So, “stress-relieving” beauty products are just more skincare products, they're your daily dose of wellbeing!
How stress affects your skin
So, as we’ve established stress doesn’t just live in our minds, it shows up on our face too. Here’s how:
Breakouts & inflammation
Elevated cortisol levels increase oil production and inflammation, leading to clogged pores and flare-ups.
Dehydration & dullness
Stress can impair your skin’s barrier function, causing moisture loss and a lacklustre complexion.
Sensitivity & redness
Your skin becomes more reactive, making it prone to irritation and redness.
Accelerated ageing
Chronic stress can break down collagen and elastin, leading to fine lines and loss of firmness.
The products
These beauty buys can transform your daily routine into a mini-meditation, offering instant stress relief and leaving you and your skin feeling calmer and brighter! Seriously!
1. Pevonia De-Stress Escape Aromatic Oil
We carry immense tension in our jaw, forehead, and neck, often without realising it, this is where applying a beautifully aromatic face oil using facial massage can make all the difference! In fact, facial massage is an incredible self-care tool because the pressure signals your body to release that physical stress.
Just as the name suggests, Pevonia’s De-Stress Escape Aromatic Oil is a multi-sensory treat that nourishes the skin while calming the mind. Infused with four pure aromatic essential oils (lavender, chamomile, rose and grapefruit), it provides hydration, softens fine lines, and promotes relaxation through its soothing scent. Perfect for stressed, dehydrated, or fatigued skin!
How to use it: After cleansing, apply the oil. Use clean hands to massage your temples in small circles. Then, apply firm pressure along your jawline, sweeping upwards from your chin to your ears. This manual lymphatic drainage is not only instantly relaxing but can also help reduce puffiness.
For the best results try massaging with a gemstone facial roller. Jade rollers, and facial massage devices aren't just Instagram-worthy, they're genuinely effective stress-busters. The gentle pressure and repetitive motions of facial massage activate pressure points, increase blood circulation, and release tension you didn't even know you were holding in your face and jaw. For maximum stress relief, work slowly, applying gentle pressure on your temples, jawline, and between your eyebrows (where we hold SO much tension). Use upward and outward strokes to physically "lift" stress away and pair with a luxurious facial oil for smooth gliding and added aromatherapy benefits
The best part? You can do this while watching TV, listening to a podcast, or just sitting in peaceful silence. It's multitasking that actually reduces stress rather than adding to it.
2. Naturys Sensitive Hydra Oil
Another fabulous oil, this time for sensitive skin. Stress can compromise the skin barrier, leaving it sensitive, dry, or irritated. This lightweight, calming oil works hard to restore balance, deeply hydrating and nourishing the skin while supporting its natural resilience. Its gentle, silky texture absorbs effortlessly, soothing stressed or reactive skin and providing comfort where it’s needed most. Regular use helps strengthen the skin’s defences, leaving it feeling soft, supple, and revitalised, perfect for those moments when your complexion needs a little extra care and protection.
How to use it: Massage a few drops into clean skin morning or evening. Can be layered under moisturiser. Or better still use your gemstone roller as mentioned above.
3. Phytomer Souffle Marin Energizing Oxygenating Serum
If you’re feeling anxious or fatigued, your skin can appear dull and devitalised. This happens because stress and tiredness can slow circulation, reducing the flow of oxygen and nutrients to the skin. As a result, your complexion may lose its natural radiance and look tired or lacklustre. Phytomer’s Souffle Marin Energizing Oxygenating Serum literally coats the skin in pure oxygen, energising cells, while detoxifying and combatting fatigue!
Formulated with marine extracts, the invigorating, moisturising blend, ensures fresher, more youthful skin with an overall increase in visible radiance. And Its silky texture makes application a mini ritual that feels indulgent.
How to use it: Apply morning and evening after cleansing for instant vitality and hydration.
4. Pevonia Power Repair Hyaluronic Acid Hydra Mask
If there's one beauty product that screams "me time," it's a face mask. There's something about the ritual of applying a mask that forces you to pause, sit still, and just be for a moment. Designed to be used as a deeply replenishing overnight mask, the Pevonia Power Repair Hyaluronic Acid Hydra Mask literally envelopes skin in a soothing blend of lavender, rose and antioxidant rich lemon extract, instantly cooling and calming. Thanks to the advanced spa-inspired formula, combined with the lowest molecular weight Hyaluronic Acid for unbeatable, long-lasting moisture, you’ll wake up to firmer, more elastic skin, a complexion that’s ultra-calm, dewy and youthfully luminous, no filter needed.
How to use: Simply apply a thin layer to cleansed skin before bed and let it work its magic overnight. In the morning simply rinse, and follow with your usual morning routine!
5. Pevonia’s Pure Skin Charcoal Mask
Dealing with a sudden breakout due to stress? Chances are your body is producing the dreaded cortisol at a mighty rate which in turn tells your sebaceous glands to produce more pore-clogging oil! Stress can also cause an imbalance of good bacteria versus bad bacteria in your gut which can present itself in acne. A detoxifying charcoal mask will be your best bet! And Pevonia’s Pure Skin Charcoal Mask is the perfect antidote for congested, dull skin. It neutralises pollutants, draws out impurities and leaves skin glowing with pure freshness!
How to use:
After cleansing your skin, apply a thin even layer of mask over face, leave for 15 minutes so it works it magic and then rinse thoroughly with cool water.
6. Phytomer Eye Flash Smoothing Reviving Mask

Phytomer’s marine-powered eye mask revitalises the delicate under-eye area instantly but quite literally brightening dark circles and reducing puffiness. It also has the added benefit of smoothing fine lines too! Its cooling, refreshing texture also gives a mini sensory “reset.”
How to use: Apply a medium layer under the eyes for 5–8 minutes, then massage in. Ideal for a mid-week pick-me-up.
7. Pevonia Tension Relief Gel
Our hands and feet are often neglected, yet they are packed with nerve endings. Giving them five minutes of dedicated care is an incredibly effective way to transition your brain from "work mode" to "rest mode" before bed.
This cooling and anti-inflammatory gel is a saviour for sore feet and tired shoulders, neck tension, and sore muscles! With soothing menthol and natural extracts, it provides instant relief and a tingly sensation that feels so satisfying.
How to use: Before settling onto the couch or getting into bed, apply a generous amount of tension relief gel onto both hands, legs and feet. Massage, focusing on the pressure points. The deliberate act of slowing down and focusing on the tactile sensation sends a clear signal to your brain it’s time to relax.
8. Pevonia Anti-Stress Bath and Shower Gel
Who doesn’t love a shower! it can feel restorative, but to turn it into a stress-reducing ritual, you need a high-quality product that engages your sense of smell! Scent is the fastest way to influence your mood because it connects directly to the limbic system, the part of the brain that controls emotion and memory. Amazing right? And lavender, in particular, has been scientifically shown to slow the heart rate and lower blood pressure, making your quick shower a true moment of calm.
Pevonia’s Anti-Stress Bath and Shower Gel (love how apt the name is!) is perfect to use morning and/or night! Relaxing and soothing, it will enhance your bath and shower with its aromatic foaming gel. Hazel Nut Oil, Chamomile, and Lavender combine to cleanse and hydrate.

Breaking out at 40 and beyond? How to fight adult acne
by Jo Boyden
on Mar 14 2025
Waking to breakouts when you thought acne was behind you? Feeling frustrated but not sure what to do? Believe it or not, adult acne is more common than you think, and it can be just as frustrating, if not more, than those pesky teenage pimples we all endured!
From hormonal changes and stress to skincare mistakes and environmental factors, there are a number of reasons why blemishes can return in adulthood. The good news? With the right targeted skincare routine and lifestyle changes, you can achieve clear skin once again! Keep reading as we discuss what’s causing your breakouts and, more importantly, our expert approved tips and solutions on how to treat them!
Why you’re getting breakouts - the most common triggers for adult acne
Unfortunately, adult acne can be caused by a number of factors, often different from the breakouts we experienced in our teens, so it’s important to try and identify your specific root cause. Everything from hormonal imbalances, stress, diet, and even the medication you might be taking can contribute to your breakouts. Here are the most common triggers:
1. Hormonal Imbalances
If you are experiencing blemishes and acne in your 40’s and 50’s, chances are it could be to do with perimenopause and the menopause. And if you had a history of pimples and acne as a teenager, you’ll more likely to be susceptible to getting acne flare ups now too! Unfortunately, fluctuations in our hormones, particularly androgens (like testosterone), can increase oil production, this excess oil can then mix with bacteria, dead skin and debris leading to clogged pores and breakouts! This is why acne also often flares up around the menstrual cycle, and during pregnancy, as well as due to conditions like polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS).
2. Stress
When you're stressed, your body produces more cortisol, which can stimulate oil glands and worsen acne. Stress-induced inflammation can also slow healing, making breakouts last longer.
3. Skincare & Makeup products
Using the wrong skincare or makeup or simply overloading your skin with it, can clog pores and trigger breakouts. Too many products, as well as heavy, oil-based, or comedogenic products can worsen acne, while harsh cleansers can strip your skin and in turn cause it to go into overdrive and overproduce oil, which is where the cycle comes into play!
4. Diet
Some studies suggest that high-glycemic foods (like white bread, potatoes, rice, cereals), dairy, and processed sugars can trigger acne by increasing inflammation and oil production so if you are ingesting much of these foods it could be one reason for your increased blemishes!
5. Lifestyle
It can be hard to get that 8-9 hours of sleep a night believe me! But lack of sleep, as well as other lifestyle choices like smoking and drinking alcohol and sugary drinks can and will affect your skin in one way or another and it’s usually through the increase in blemishes.
6. Environmental Factors
Pollution, sweat, and even your phone screen or pillowcase can harbor bacteria that contribute to breakouts. Regularly cleaning your phone and changing pillowcases can help reduce bacteria exposure.
6. Medications
Certain medications, including steroids, birth control pills, and antidepressants, can disrupt hormones or increase oil production, leading to breakouts.
7. Over-Exfoliating or Harsh Skincare
Too much exfoliation or harsh acne treatments can strip the skin’s natural barrier, leading to more oil production and irritation, making acne worse instead of better!
How to treat breakouts and adult acne
1. Cleanse gently (but effectively!)
Many people with acne-prone skin make the mistake of over-cleansing or using harsh scrubs, which can strip the skin and lead to even more breakouts. Instead, opt for a gentle cleanser with acne-fighting ingredients like salicylic acid.
We highly recommend Hubislab A.C Clearing Purifying Cleansing Gel. It’s a soothing gel-based cleanser which has been especially formulated (salicylic acid and powerful antioxidant green tea) for congested and acne prone skin to completely but gently clear pores, removing makeup, dirt and grime from the skin without over-drying, all whilst protecting the skin against oxidative damage.
2. Don’t skimp on moisturiser
It’s a common misconception that oily or acne-prone skin doesn’t need moisture! The truth is, when your skin is dehydrated it can actually produce even more oil to over compensate, leading to further breakouts, eek! You do need to be careful about the moisturisers you choose though!
When looking for the best moisturisers for acne prone skin, you’ll want to choose lightweight, non-comedogenic moisturisers that hydrate without clogging pores, like the ProCorrective Clear-Control Moisturiser for balancing hydration and oil control. It’s carefully selected non-comedogenic (non-pore clogging) super skin-clearing, calming and hydrating ingredients (we are talking Zinc Chloride, Hydrolyzed Wheat Protein, Cinnamon, Thyme, Mallow, Witch Hazel, Tea Tree Extract, Niacinamide, Glycolic and Salicylic Acids, Microcitrus Australasica, a.k.a. Caviar Lime and Hyaluronic Acid!)combine to deeply target acne by rapidly clearing away blemishes and clogging, while moisturising and smoothing uneven texture. It’s so good! In fact the whole Pevonia ProCorrective line is outstanding for the management of adult acne!
3. Exfoliate regularly (but don’t overdo it!)
Exfoliation is key to unclogging pores and preventing breakouts, but doing it daily can damage your skin barrier. Stick to gentle chemical exfoliants with AHAs or BHAs (like glycolic or salicylic acid) two times per week to keep your skin smooth and clear.
We love Pevonia Enzymo Spherides Peeling Cream. Do not let the name ‘peeling cream’ put you off though! Papaya and Pineapple have been selected for their enzyme peeling action, an action that gently digests away impurities, sebum, toxins and the dead skin cells, instead of abrading or burning them off. So, it’s gentle, really gentle, and it’s effective too! Nothing makes skin feel cleaner, lighter or more purified than this jar of goodness and it’s easy to use! Simply apply a thin layer on cleansed skin, wet the fingertips with warm water, this will help to “wake up” the enzymes, then leave them to do their thing for 5-10 minutes, then rinse away.
4. Spot treat your skin
When a breakout appears, resist the urge to squeeze it please! And yes, I know how tempting it can be, but squeezing spots can spread bacteria and exacerbate your acne! Instead, use a targeted spot treatment with ingredients like benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid, sulfur, or tea tree oil to reduce inflammation and speed up healing.
5. Manage your stress
Easier said than done we know, but there are some amazing aids and coping mechanisms when it comes to stress. Try to give yourself a little “me” time. This might feel like an impossibility especially if you are a busy, working mum! But we are simply talking even a few minutes a day to soak in a bath, read your book, listen to a podcast, meditate, exercise or simply listen to music! Breathing exercises can also be game-changing and I know have seriously helped me! One of the main symptoms of perimenopause is anxiety and being in my mid 40’s I have definitely been hard hit. I find music and breathing has helped no end. I’m telling you just a little time out can make a noticeable difference in your skin’s clarity.
6. Choose your makeup wisely
Heavy, oil-based foundations can clog pores and worsen acne so you’ll want to opt for non-comedogenic, breathable makeup formulas, and always remove your makeup before bed to prevent buildup and irritation!
Mineral makeup is the best makeup for acne prone skin, its free from common irritants such as fragrances, preservatives, and synthetic dyes, making it less likely to cause breakouts or allergic reactions plus so many formulations are lightweight and breathable, so you literally feel like you aren’t wearing makeup (even though it will help conceal those blemishes) and will literally allow your inflamed skin to breathe and not be clogged!
I know I am biased but I have been using ELES Mineral Makeup for YEARS. And I will never use anything else. I can hand on heart say their products have helped my skin, prevented me from getting spots even! I personally love the ELES Mineral Sheer Tint and ELES Mineral Powder Foundation, but the no. 1 ELES best-seller is the Liquid Powder Mineral Foundation, and the reviews speak volumes!
All three products are mineral, filled to the brim with skin friendly, anti-ageing ingredients and do not ever clog pores! Brillant stuff.
7. Watch your diet
If you are struggling with adult acne, you should try and cut down on high-glycemic foods which have been linked to acne flare-ups. Also try reducing your intake of processed sugars and dairy products. Instead eat a diet rich in antioxidants (like leafy greens, nuts, and berries) and healthy fats (like fish, avocado and unsalted nuts), and increase hydration to help balance skin.
8. Try to get enough sleep
Sometimes getting that 7-9 hours of solid sleep a night can seem like an impossibility, I know! But sleep really is essential for skin health because it allows for cellular repair, collagen production, and hydration balance. During deep sleep, our body boosts blood flow to the skin, helping to reduce inflammation, prevent premature ageing, and promote a radiant complexion (crazy right?)
9. Stay kind to your skin and consistent with your routine
From spots to adult acne, we know how frustrating breakouts can be! But constantly switching products can often make things worse! Remember to treat your skin with gentle, nourishing care and give products time to work their magic. Clear skin doesn’t happen overnight! Sticking to a consistent skincare routine with the right products for your skin type really is key to preventing breakouts in the long run.
By following these simple yet effective tips, you can take control of adult acne and enjoy a clearer, healthier complexion, we promise!
Breakouts? Why you’re getting reoccurring pimples
by Jo Boyden
on Jun 02 2023
I’m pretty certain when I say, we’ve likely all suffered from pimples many a time in our lives, and just when you think they are behind you, you suddenly get another bout of unwanted blemishes! Pimples are actually a very common skin concern for people of all ages and skin types. But have you ever wondered why those pesky pimples keep cropping up, even when we are in our 40’s, 50’s and older even? And often in specific areas of our face too! Maybe you tend to get them around your chin more? Or on your nose or forehead perhaps?Well, according to the ancient Chinese practice of face mapping, the location of your pimples can actually tell you a lot about your overall health. That’s right dependant on where your pimples are appearing on your face, they can actually mean different things, from digestive issues to hormonal fluctuation. Keep reading to learn all about the importance of face mapping, so next time you get an outbreak you’ll know what the cause may be and how you can help to fix it. Firstly though, what is face mapping?Face mapping is an ancient Chinese and Ayurvedic practice that links different “zones” of the face (eg cheeks, chin, forehead) to different organs or glands in the body. The theory is that when there is an imbalance or toxicity in the body (in one of the different organs), it can manifest as pimples in the corresponding zone on the face. What are the different zones and what do pimples in these areas mean? The foreheadIf you often find yourself battling pimples in this area, it could be an indicator of digestive issues. Take a closer look at your diet, up the fibre and make sure you're staying hydrated too. Cutting back on alcohol, sugar and processed foods and incorporating more fruits and veggies could help clear up those forehead blemishes. Be sure to chew food well and take probiotics too.Between the browsBlemishes between the brows can be the sign of an overloaded liver. Liver issues can be indicative of sleep deprivation, heightened emotions (stress, sadness, anger, worry), or an excess of sugar, fats or alcohol in your diet. Your lymphatic circulation may also be stagnant and could use a little boost so try starting your morning with a hot water with lemon, drink plenty of fluids throughout the day, decrease your intake of spicy foods, alcohol, dairy, and sorry to say it, coffee too! And up the essential fatty acids, omega 3 and 6 in your diet, avocado and olive oil on your salad will help. Finally rest up, like you, your liver needs plenty of time to rest and recuperate.TemplesThe corners of the forehead, by the temples represent the kidneys.Lack of sleep, a poor diet and dehydration impacts our kidney function. Another factor may be a mineral deficiency, specifically iron too. To help, take proactive steps to support the kidneys, including decreasing stress, consuming enough fluids (spring water, coconut water, herbal tea, hydrolytes!), making sure you get enough sleep, also be mindful of your diet (eat ample amounts of fruits and vegetables and try to stay away from too much sodium.CheeksIf you notice pimples frequently appearing on your cheeks, it could indicate respiratory issues or allergies, since this area is linked to your lungs. The most common food triggers are dairy, soy, gluten, processed sugar and alcohol – try to eliminate these groups for a month to see how your body reacts with the change and replace with leafy green goodness. Also, pay attention to the air quality in your environment, as pollutants can wreak havoc on your skin.JawlineBreakouts in this area are often linked to hormonal fluctuations, particularly in women. It's not uncommon to experience these pimples around your menstrual cycle. However, persistent acne along the jawline might also be connected to polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) or digestive problems so you might want to get a blood test so that your doctor can get a better understanding of your hormonal levels. This will also help to determine how well your thyroid is functioning too.If you find you do get hormonal breakouts, there are many things you can do to help. Try eliminating caffeine (ok this might be a big ask, so at least try to cut it down), as well as cutting out processed sugar, dried fruit, bread, wine, diary, white flour, gluten, soy, fried foods, peanut butter and fruits like grapes and bananas (high sugar content). Eating a diet rich in omega-3 foods will instead be very beneficial, as will managing stress levels. Taking vitamin D3 supplements and getting regular exercise and adequate sleep can work wonders for bringing your hormones back to their natural balance as well!ChinIf you are prone to pimples on your chin, it could be related to your stomach. Just be sure to step up your fibre intake, avoid hydrogenated fats and processed sugar and try to be vigilant with the times you eat (no eating dinner just before bedtime!)NoseGetting pimples on your nose can be linked to your heart and can sometimes indicate high blood pressure, so get your blood pressure checked if you’re concerned. Look into ways of lowering your cholesterol too like replacing “bad fats” with “good fats” such as Omegas 3 and 6 found in nuts, avocados, fish and flax seed. You may also have a Vitamin B deficiency so consider a vitamin supplement and try to avoid spicy foods.Tip: Massage the area around your nose to improve circulation. While face mapping can provide insights into your pimples underlying causes, it’s essential to adopt some general habits for maintaining healthy skin too. Here are a few tips to get you started: Keep skin beautifully cleansed If we don’t cleanse (and exfoliate) out skin our pores can become clogged with dead skin cells, excess oil and dirt. When a pore gets clogged, it provides the perfect environment for bacteria to thrive and pimples to form! So be sure to keep your face clean by washing it twice a day with a gentle cleanser suitable for your skin type and exfoliate at least once a week. Adopt healthy skincare habits Your skincare routine and habits can play a significant role in the appearance of pimples. Harsh or irritating products can disrupt the skin’s natural balance, leading to inflammation and breakouts. While cleansing and exfoliating is imperative, over-washing or over-exfoliating can strip away essential oils, prompting your skin to produce more sebum as a defence mechanism. Use natural products free of harsh irritants and adopt a healthy daily skincare routine. Don’t pick or squeeze your pimples! As tempting as it may be, avoid picking or popping your pimples, as it can lead to scarring and more breakouts. Eat a balanced diet Studies suggest there is a link between diet and pimples. Consuming sugary and processed foods may increase insulin levels, leading to increased sebum production and acne formation. Additionally, dairy products and foods rich in saturated fats have also been associated with blemish breakouts. Therefore maintaining a balanced diet rich in an array of colourful fruits and veggies can promote overall skin health. Stay hydrated Drink enough water (and herbal tea) consistency throughout the day to keep skin hydrated and flush out those unwanted toxins. Manage stress Stress can be a big indicator of unwanted breakouts. Try and find ways to manage stress. Exercise daily, even if only for a brisk walk, practice meditation, indulge in a good book, relax and listen to your favourite music or simply engage in activities you enjoy that allow you to switch off from stress. Get enough sleep I know we say this time and time again, and I need to practice what I preach, but sleep is SO important, it’s the second most important thing after water. Sleep is not only a time for our body to recoup, but the time that our skin repairs and regenerates too. So as hard as it may be sometimes or impossible if you have a heavy workload, try and put that laptop down, turn off the TV or stop scrolling through Facebook for an evening, and get that quality sleep your body needs and deserves. Just remember your face is a little like a mirror reflecting what’s going on inside your body! By understanding the principles of face mapping you can get a better understanding of your overall health! By paying attention to the specific location of your pimples, you can address any underlying issues. Remember clear skin is not just about how you care for it topically, it’s about nourishing from within too!Want to learn more about the type of pimples you have and how to treat them? Click here. 7 self-care rituals to help you and your skin indulge in blissful slumber

The month of September is recognized as Self Care Awareness Month and what better time to practice self-care than now, when so many of us are living through what feels like forever in lockdown! And yes, I hear and echo many of those mum’s (and dad’s!) who are likely thinking self-care? Who has time for that! But self-care can be as simple as getting an extra hour (or minutes even!) of invaluable zzzzz’s! In fact, sleep is probably the most important part of self-care! Why? Because it can improve your mindset, memory, concentration, energy, productivity, and skin too! And we know, no one is choosing to be sleep deprived, the stresses of everyday life can seriously prevent us from getting the amount of sleep we crave, but if it’s possible to try and get our heads down at a reasonable time (I’m talking to myself here too!) and stick to it nightly, it’ll improve your quality of sleep and in turn have a positive impact of your life and complexion too!Below are 7 self-care tips that will help induce sleep as well as seriously benefit your skin. And if they are working for me, I’m pretty sure they’ll work for you too! Get outdoors and get activeSpending time in the great outdoors in nature is paramount to our mental wellbeing, but it is also known to reduce stress, alleviate anxiety, lower blood pressure and induce peaceful sleep! If you aren’t already doing so, or are becoming a wee bit complacent in lockdown, as part of your daily self-care routine, try and force yourself to get that 20 minutes plus of exercise daily and release those feel-good endorphins it induces.Eat your way to sleepWe all know eating too close to bedtime can impact the quality of our sleep but so can the foods we eat! Now is the time to make changes to your daily diet and incorporate the following foods and drinks that are known to have sleep promoting properties!Nuts – such as almonds, are a great source of the hormone melatonin which regulates your internal clock and signals your body to prepare for sleep. They are also an excellent source of magnesium which has the ability to reduce inflammation and stress levels, in turn helping to improve sleep quality, especially in those who suffer from insomnia.Dairy – such as a glass of milk or plain yogurt are known sources of the amino acid tryptophan which increases the production of melatonin. A glass of milk before bed has been proven to improve sleep.Bananas – like milk contain tryptophan, and the fruit itself is a modest source of magnesium.Oatmeal & rice – are high in carbs and fibre and have been reported to induce drowsiness when consumed close to bedtime. Additionally, oats are a known source of melatoninChamomile tea – offers a variety of health benefits! From being rich in antioxidants that help reduce inflammation, to boosting your immunity, reducing anxiety and depression! In addition, this popular tea contains apigenin, an antioxidant that binds to certain receptors in your brain that help promote sleepiness.Indulge in a salt infused bubble bathIf you can’t remember the last time you let yourself enjoy a long soak in the bath free from distraction, then now’s the time to treat yourself to a salts-infused bath. Little instantly promotes relaxation quite like taking a remineralizing bath. Ahhhhhh. Begin by creating a spa-like atmosphere so your entire body is relaxed – I’m talking soothing music, burning essential oils, lighting your favourite candle, whatever it takes to set the mood. Next, fill your bath with Phytomer’s Oligomer Well Being Sensation Essential Minerals Relaxing Bath. This amazing lightly foaming product is enriched with Oligomer – a partially sodium-reduced seawater concentrate that contains all of the remineralizing properties of seawater –to strengthen and restore the skin and release all pent-up tension, helping you drift off into a world of utter relaxation.Create a night-time skincare ritualIt only takes minutes to apply your skincare products before bed but what a difference it will make to your skin! If you want to drift off to peaceful slumber and awake to gorgeous glowy skin these are my personal night-time go-to’s; Phytomer Night Recharge Youth Enhancing Cream - Skin cells do their greatest renewal and repair whist we sleep, so applying much needed hydration at night is encouraged to maximise absorption and to enhance your skin barrier. I personally LOVE Phytomer’s Night Recharge Youth Enhancing Cream and use it religiously because my skin demands that extra layer of rich fluffy moisturiser. The cream literally cocoons my skin in nourishing hydration and really does restore youthful vitality by morning.Pevonia Aromatic Oil – with all the benefits of 4 mood enhancing essential oils – lavender, grapefruit, chamomile and rose, combined with squalane and vitamin e, this soothing and indulgent face oil combats dehydration and dryness while soothing, calming and brightening skin. It also promotes an immediate feeling of increased wellbeing and total relaxation from the moment you apply it! Heaven.Say goodbye to dark undereye circles and bagsIt's not an urban legend — falling short on your zzz's, whether due to insomnia or late nights, can cause circles under your eyes to appear or become more prominent. This happens because lack of sleep tends to cause the blood vessels under the thin skin of the eyes to dilate, creating a dark tint. Not getting enough sleep can also increase stress which too can exacerbate dark circles.Fed up of waking with bulbous bags and black circles under your eyes? Try to get more of the necessary shut-eye, but also apply an eye cream like this beauty before bed and when you wake in the morning;Vie Collection’s Chrono Eyes Puffiness-Dark Circles Wrinkles Cream. Yes, a mouthful to say, but a product that does exactly what it says. It’s a beautifully fine cream enriched with moisturising ingredients to nourish the eye area while reversing puffiness, dark circles, and wrinkles! Seriously! it gives immediate gratification thanks to a pearlescent finish that instantly brightens the eye area and it has definitely calmed my puffiness, lightened my dark circles, and even smoothed my wrinkles! Meditate to clear your mindMeditation is one of the best ways to take care of yourself. I couldn’t imagine not having my nightly 5-minute meditation ritual, which my little one’s love to do before their bedtime too! It’s my way to wind down and calm my mind before bed and has vastly improved my quality of sleep too (because prior to committing to my bedtime meditation I was guilty of sitting staring at a screen until at least 11.30 pm at night and we all know how this can interfere with our circadian rhythm (our natural, internal process that regulates our sleep-wake cycle.)Meditation has a whole heap of benefits from reducing stress and negative emotions to increasing self-awareness, creativity, and patience. So, if you haven’t already and are keen to give it a try, I recommend both the Headspace and Calm apps. They have a range of guided meditations for an array of concerns such as sleep deprivation, anxiety, stress and productivity. It might take you a few goes before you start to relax into it and feel a change but believe me when I stay stick with it as you’ll soon wonder why you didn’t give it a go before now! Play soothing soundsThis one gets me every time! Not only when I go to bed but when I’m putting my kids to bed and pass out too!! In addition to facilitating quickly falling asleep and improving sleep quality, playing relaxing music before bed can improve sleep efficiency, which means more time that you are in bed is actually spent sleeping. Improved sleep efficiency equals more consistent rest and less waking up during the night. Result! Our family favourite is Relaxing Deep Sleep Music on Mindful Kids! Bliss. It is not new, and has been part and parcel of natural and holistic skincare for centuries. It is of course Essential Oils, the medicinal properties of plants that make natural skin care products more than just plant fodder. From the luxurious skin-softening properties of the Rose (used famously by Cleopatra to maintain her beauty) to the wound-cleansing benefits of Myrrh (used by ancient Roman soldiers going into battle), these potent oils harness a wide range of botanical therapeutics to address both our skin care AND our mood! There are now approximately 2000 known plant species in the world which contribute to different essential oils! Amazing right? And the importance of essential oils in cosmetics and skincare relate to their diverse benefits.Unlike synthetics, the impact of an essential oil can be huge! Since they have the ability to relax our senses, uplift our spirits and support our physical and psychological well-being for a truly holistic sense of wellness. Another feature that lends these all-natural oils to enhanced skincare is that they are absorbed easily through the skin, thereby being very receptive to simple topical remedies and applications. Chamomile OilFor your mood: Deep relaxation, a natural sleep aid, anti-anxietyFor your skin: Chamomile extract is reputed to help manage feelings of discomfort from inflammation and irritation. For this reason, it is a common ingredient in products that address a variety of skin conditions, including eczema, dermatitis, dryness, soreness, and itchiness. It is also valued for its cleansing and moisturizing properties and is often added to soften and brighten the skin and hair, to help balance oily skin, and to help manage the appearance of blemishes and acne.
