The benefits of face oils and the best ones for your skin

by Jo Boyden on Jun 14 2024
If your skin is feeling particularly parched or you’re wondering how to achieve that coveted healthy glow, face oils could be your answer. These potent elixirs are packed with nourishing ingredients that can seriously transform your skin, offering benefits that extend far beyond simple hydration. From enhancing your skin's barrier to providing a boost of antioxidants, face oils are a necessary addition to any skincare routine. Keep reading as we reveal everything there is to know about face oils, from their multitude of benefits that moisturisers and serums alone may not provide, to the best ones for your skin type. Whether your skin is dry, oily, sensitive, or mature, there's a face oil out there for you! Firstly, exactly what are face oils? Face oils are typically formulated with botanical and essential oils as well as plant extracts and antioxidants. They are designed to soften, nourish and balance your complexion, locking in hydration and providing skin with the additional moisture it needs for a truly glowing complexion. Non-comedogenic, they won’t clog pores and cause breakouts either! Why use a face oil Adding a face oil to your skincare routine can be a transformative step towards achieving healthier, more radiant skin. Face oils are packed with nourishing ingredients that penetrate deeply into the skin, providing intense hydration and locking in moisture. They can help balance oil production, making them suitable for various skin types, including oily and acne-prone skin. Face oils also contain antioxidants that combat free radicals, reducing signs of aging like fine lines and wrinkles. Whether used alone or mixed with your moisturiser or foundation, face oils will leave your skin feeling soft, supple, and glowing. The Benefits of Face Oils Adding a face oil to your skincare routine can be beneficial for several reasons Deep Hydration Face oils are incredible for deep hydration. Unlike moisturisers that may evaporate quickly, or often sit on the surface of your skin, oils penetrate deeply into the skin, locking in moisture and keeping your skin soft and supple. Enhanced Skin Barrier Our skin barrier is essential for keeping out pollutants and retaining moisture. Face oils contain essential fatty acids that strengthen this barrier, making your skin more resilient and less prone to irritation. Rich in Antioxidants Many face oils are packed with antioxidants, which help combat free radicals and prevent premature aging. Oils like argan are rich in vitamins A and E, promoting skin elasticity and reducing fine lines. Skin plumping In your 40s wrinkles can start to look more obvious because the skin’s natural oils decrease, the moisture barrier breaks down, and the skin dries out. Because oils are lipophilic, or fat loving, they pass through the lipid layer of the skin faster, preventing water loss and plumping skin with moisture more effectively. Balancing Properties It might seem counterintuitive, but oils can help balance oily and acne-prone skin. Oils like tea tree and grapeseed have antimicrobial properties and can regulate sebum production, reducing breakouts and giving you a clearer complexion. Soothing and Calming For those with sensitive or irritated skin, oils such as chamomile and calendula can provide soothing relief. Their anti-inflammatory properties help reduce redness and calm irritated skin, promoting a more even and calm complexion. However, you can also add it to your foundation or moisturiser especially during the winter to get an extra level of nourishment. Myths About Face Oils Oils Will Make My Skin Oily: The right oil can actually help balance oil production and reduce greasiness. Oils Cause Breakouts: Non-comedogenic oils are designed not to clog pores and can actually help prevent acne. Oils Are Only for Dry Skin: There’s a suitable oil for every skin type, each offering unique benefits. Face oils are a powerful addition to any skincare routine, providing hydration, protection, and nourishment. Whether you are looking to hydrate, balance or rejuvenate your complexion, with the right oil tailored to your skin type, you can achieve a healthier, more radiant skin.
Sensitive skin, rosacea or redness? Which do you have?

Sensitive skin, rosacea or redness? Which do you have?

by Jo Boyden on Apr 12 2024
Suffering from sensitive skin? Or is it rosacea perhaps? or maybe you are just prone to frequent redness and facial flushing? Identifying which of these common skin concerns you may have can be somewhat confusing, especially since they often share similar symptoms. But understanding their differences is essential as each condition can affect the skin in various ways!Keep reading as we outline the differences between sensitive skin, rosacea and facial redness, helping you to determine the most effective treatment approach for your skin’s specific needs! ROSACEAUnderstanding RosaceaRosacea is a chronic inflammatory skin condition characterised by redness, flushing, visible blood vessels, and sometimes acne-like bumps (papules and pustules). It typically affects the central part of the face, including the cheeks, nose, chin, and forehead. While the exact cause of rosacea is unknown, factors such as genetics, environmental triggers, and an overactive immune system may contribute to its development. Common triggers include sun exposure, hot or spicy foods, alcohol, stress, and certain skincare products.Managing RosaceaUnfortunately it’s not possible to eliminate rosacea altogether but you can effectively manage it and keep symptoms at bay! To manage rosacea you need to identify and avoid your triggers that can exacerbate symptoms.Unfortunately. sun exposure is the most common trigger for rosacea. While we may all love long days at the beach, if you suffer from rosacea your skin sadly will pay a price. Not only can sunburn make flare-ups even worse, the heat from the sun can also increase your body temperature which in turn dilates blood vessels and triggers inflammation! So you’ll want to make sure you avoid direct sun exposure as much as you can and wear SPF daily. Just be sure to opt for sensitive skin formulations that won’t aggravate your rosacea.Try Hubislab Herb 8 Soothing Blemish Balm SPF 30 PA++. It soothes and regenerates sensitive skin while protecting skin against sun damage, premature skin ageing including dark spots, and other external factors. Its clever formulation of Zinc oxide, UVA and UVB protection and 8 herbal extracts also ensures the prevention of wrinkles and inflammation.Gentle skincare products formulated for rosacea prone skin, free of harsh ingredients such as fragrance, alcohol, and abrasive exfoliants, are also a must!Look for products such as rosacea serum formulated with calming and soothing ingredients like green tea, licorice extract, chamomile extract, and French rose extract. We highly recommend Pevonia’s best-selling RS2 rosacea skincare line – a soothing, calming and irritant free collection that not only alleviates redness and discomfort but also helps create a healthy skin barrier. What’s more for the month of APRIL. When you purchase the Pevonia rosacea RS2 Care Cream, you’ll receive the matching Cleanser and Lotion 50ml for FREE. When it comes to concealing rosacea symptoms, mineral makeup can be a great go-to as well. For the best makeup products for rosacea according to the BC experts click here. And finally try to relax more, stress less, reduce alcohol consumption and eliminate hot, spicy foods from your diet!Sadly stress and anxiety, alcohol and certain foods can cause rosacea symptoms to really flare up! By getting plenty of rest and practicing meditation and yoga can help to keep stress and therefore rosacea at bay. SENSITIVE SKINUnderstanding Sensitive SkinSensitive skin is a common skin condition characterised by heightened reactivity to environmental factors, skincare products, and other external irritants.Symptoms may include redness, itching, burning, stinging, and tightness.Sensitive skin can be caused by a variety of factors, including genetics, allergies, skin barrier dysfunction, and exposure to harsh chemicals or environmental pollutants.Managing Sensitive SkinSensitive skin requires gentle care and attention to maintain its health and balance. From choosing the right skincare products to adopting lifestyle habits that promote skin resilience, you can manage sensitive skin effectively.First things first, you need to manage sensitive skin by using gentle, non-irritating skincare products that are free of potential allergens, fragrances, dyes, and other irritating ingredients. Opt for mild, fragrance-free cleansers, serums and moisturisers formulated specifically for sensitive skin and pay particular attention to moisturising. You want to keep your skin hydrated and nourished with gentle, hydrating serums and moisturisers. Look for ingredients like hyaluronic acid, ceramides, and glycerin, which help maintain the skin's moisture barrier and chamomile to soothe. Our favourites: Hubislab Post Rays Chamomile Complex 70% ampoule. This deeply nourishing serum is formulated with 70% Chamomile, combined with other natural nourishing and soothing ingredients including Centella Asiatica, Hyaluronic Acid and Glycerin. It penetrates sensitive or irritated skin to calm, purify, protect and strengthen! Oh and it’s antibacterial and anti-inflammatory too!Medicalia Gentle Cream. Rich in natural Ceramides, Phospholipids, Green Tea, Glycerin and Chamomile, this calming, nourishing cream effectively infuses the skin with antioxidant, nourishing, soothing, and hydrating benefits. It almost immediately reduces skin discomfort by desensitizing and shielding skin.Phytomer Douceur Marine Soothing Moisturising Cream. This soothing and nourishing creams velvety texture leaves the skin subtly scented with an airy and bright blend of plum and bergamot. Day after day, it provides a noticeable reduction in skin redness and discomfort.Next you want to consider exfoliation. Remember exfoliating is important even if you have sensitive skin, but once a week will be sufficient. Over-exfoliating can over stimulate sensitive skin and exacerbate your already irritation condition. You’ll want to opt for gentle exfoliants with mild ingredients like fruit enzymes or polyhydroxy acids (PHAs) and avoid abrasive scrubs or harsh chemical exfoliants.Try the highly rated Phytomer Vegetal Exfoliant with natural enzymes. It’s a seriously soft, silky and subtly scented exfoliant perfect for sensitive skin and it eliminates impurities by gently removing dead skin cells with natural enzymes (so no scrubbing or irritating the skin whatsoever!) It encourages cell turnover, revealing beautifully luminous and youthful skin after every use – no jokes.Want to know more about exfoliation and sensitive skin and what to do? Click here. It’s also essential to protect your skin from harmful UV rays by wearing broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher daily, come rain, hail or shine! Choose mineral-based sunscreens containing zinc oxide or titanium dioxide, which are less likely to cause irritation. We LOVE Hubislab Post Rays UV Protect Sun Block SPF50+ PA+++ not only is it formulated with both zinc oxide and titanium dioxide so perfect for sensitive and ageing skin since zero irritation, it’s also rich in hydrolyzed Collagen and peptides keeping skin nourished, soft and supple! Its invisible matte formula also applies smoothly and stays on all day long!Additionally, maintaining a healthy lifestyle, including managing stress, staying hydrated, getting enough beauty sleep, eating a balanced diet rich in antioxidants and omega-3 fatty acids, and protecting the skin from environmental stressors can help reduce sensitivity and improve skin barrier function. FACIAL REDNESSUnderstanding RednessRedness, or erythema, is a common skin concern characterised by the appearance of red or flushed skin. It can be caused by various factors, including rosacea, sensitive skin, sunburn, allergies, irritation, inflammation, and underlying medical conditions. Redness may be temporary or chronic, depending on the underlying cause and triggers.Managing RednessManaging redness involves identifying and addressing the underlying cause. In addition to following a gentle skincare routine suitable for sensitive skin, incorporating anti-inflammatory ingredients such as green tea extract, niacinamide, and licorice root extract may help calm redness and soothe irritated skin. Sun protection is also crucial, as UV exposure can worsen redness and inflammation. When it comes to your red face you need to start with the basics – choose a mild, hydrating cleanser. Harsh cleansers can strip your skin of its natural oils, leading to increased redness and irritation. Cleanse with care, using lukewarm water to avoid shocking your skin.Try: Pevonia Sensitive Skin Cleanser. This beautifully light-textured cleanser gently removes accumulated impurities, while diffusing redness and irritation. Formulated with Chamomile and Calendula it delivers soothing, calming and desensitizing benefits to your delicate skin.If your skin redness is potentially caused by dryness or inflammation a natural face mask or sheet mask specifically formulated to cool and calm skin can work wonders too!Try: ELES Calming and Soothing Sheet Mask. Incorporating natural botanicals it soothes and reduces inflammation. Like a cool balm, this calming mask reduces redness and heat and restores a protective barrier to prevent moisture loss.WE totally understand that when you suffer from rosacea or skin redness you aren’t likely to forego makeup altogether. You do need to let your skin breath freely to reduce irritation though so its essential to opt for mineral makeup that will allow just this. Mineral makeup is non-comedogenic which means it won’t clog your pores.Try: ELES Mineral Powder Foundation. As a sufferer of want for a better word ‘flushed skin’ I personally LOVE the best-selling ELES Mineral Powder Foundation! It’s one of my all-time favourites. It’s one of the most natural-looking, if not THE most natural-looking foundations I have in fact ever tried and being in the industry for 20 years I’ve tried many! And let’s face it we don’t want our makeup to slide off our skin and reveal a flushed complexion at any point right? Plus wearing a primer also creates a barrier between your skin and your makeup therefore preventing any further irritation. If you’re prone to a flushed face we can’t get enough of ELES Retexture Crème Face Primer, it hydrates, soothes, calms and plumps skin with Aloe Barbadensis Gel, Chamomile Extract, Witch Hazel & Marigold. And finally when your face is feeling particularly fiery, try a cold compress. A soft cloth soaked in cold water can work wonders to calm redness and soothe your skin. For more of the best tips to fight the flush click here.By identifying your triggers and following a gentle yet effective skincare routine you can radically reduce rosacea, sensitive skin and facial flushing symptoms and achieve healthier, happier skin.

Skincare routine for sensitive skin Identify your skin concerns First things first, understanding your specific skin concerns is crucial for tailoring your skincare routine. Sensitive skin can manifest in various ways, including dryness, redness, itchiness, and irritation. Know your triggers Specific ingredients and environmental factors can trigger skin sensitivity. Everything from fragrances and preservatives in soaps, beauty products and laundry detergents to the cold, sun and wind can cause skin irritation. Learn to know which are your triggers. To learn more about why you could be suffering from sensitive skin click here. Always choose gentle products with calming ingredients Opt for fragrance-free, hypoallergenic, and non-comedogenic products to minimize the risk of irritation. And always check the ingredients. You want your skincare products to be formulated with ingredients that soothe and nourish sensitive skin, such as aloe vera, chamomile, calendula and ceramides. These natural extracts have anti-inflammatory properties that can help soothe sensitive skin and reduce redness. Gentle Cleansing Now it's time to start your routine! Begin with your gentle cleanser designed for sensitive skin, which means it’ll be free from alcohol and harsh ingredients. Remember cleansing should be a soothing experience, not one that leaves your skin feeling tight and irritated!Try: Medicalia Gentle cleanser. Formulated with a unique natural blend of soothing Green Tea, Chamomile, and Oat Amino Acids, it beautifully cleanses skin both thoroughly and gently while preserving the skin barrier and reducing symptoms of inflammation too!“This cleanser is perfect for my super sensitive skin. Fragrance-free formulas and those that are free of ingredients like phthalates and parabens will also reduce your exposure to formulas that might irritate your skin. Be sure to reapply if you are outside for a long period of time!Try: Medicalia Sunscreen SPF 40 with Blue Light Shield.“Love this product it gives all day sun protection doesn’t mark clothing and gives my skin a healthy glow I’m hooked!” Jan C Exfoliate skin but don’t over-exfoliate! Exfoliation is essential, even for those of us with sensitive skin. This is because exfoliating can promote cell regeneration, unclog pores and improve skin texture. The problem is, that exfoliation can come with risks of irritation, inflammation and dryness, so it is essential to choose the right exfoliators! Then there is also the issue of over-exfoliation, which can strip the skin's natural barrier leading to increased sensitivity. So if you have sensitive skin, start by limiting its use to only once a week and use a gentle exfoliator with mild exfoliating agents like fruit acids or enzymes. For more on exfoliation and sensitive skin and what to do click here. Stay consistent And finally, consistency is key when it comes to caring for your sensitive skin. Once you’ve found what works, stick to it and daily.Aside from your skincare routine, there are also other things you can do to help calm your sensitive skin. Stress less, sleep more and watch what you eat. Certain foods and drinks can contribute to your skin's sensitivities. Limit spicy foods, caffeine and alcohol, and feast on a diet rich in antioxidants and omega-3 fatty acids to promote skin health from within. Makeup tips for sensitive skinNow you’ve got your skincare routine down pat, it's time to master your makeup! Check ingredients As with your skincare routine, make sure you opt for "non-comedogenic" makeup to prevent pore-clogging and potential breakouts. You’ll also want to invest in fragrance free formulas as artificial scents can be a common trigger for sensitivity. Mineral Makeup is best. Clean makeup brushes regularly We all know dirty brushes can harbour bacteria which in turn can further irritate already irritated skin! Make sure you clean your makeup brushes regularly! To learn more about how often you should clean and replace your makeup brushes click here. Less is more Yes, we want to conceal sensitive skin whether it be facial redness or unwanted blemishes, but just remember less is always more!Simply minimise the number of makeup layers you apply to your face to reduce the risk of irritation and if you’re suffering from facial redness, try using a multi-tasking CC cream.Unlike tinted moisturisers, foundations and even BB Creams, these miracle formulas are colour correcting. So instead of applying a thick layer of opaque makeup to cover the redness, the CC Cream’s Photonic Crystal Technology “offsets” redness, wrinkles and other skin imperfections, subtly illuminating the skin. This means less coverage is required if any at all. In fact, men can and do use CC Creams to even out their skin tone as it doesn’t look like makeup.Try: ELES Luminous CC Cream 20, you’ll be so glad you did!“I’m loving my new CC Cream! I was recommended it by a friend as I suffer from facial redness and sensitive skin and this product does an amazing job at colour correcting so the redness is beautifully concealed but my skin feels calm with a nice natural glow at the same time. Would highly recommend it.” Sarah MIf colour correction isn’t something you need make sure you go for a breathable, lightweight liquid formula.Try; best-selling ELES Liquid Powder Mineral Foundation. It’s silky, mineral-enriched and provides skin with broad spectrum sun protection. Its liquid formulation glides beautifully onto sensitive skin setting as a soft, powder finish, however it does not clog skin! Brilliant stuff. “The ELES liquid to powder is PHENOMENAL. I will never try another foundation. The foundation smooths over your skin so easily, providing good medium coverage, evening out skin tone, its completely non-irritating, and doesn't clog my skin.” Lucy G Patch test It’s always a good idea to patch test any new makeup products when it comes to sensitive or reactive skin, before applying all over your face! Remove makeup before bed And finally, always remember to remove your makeup before bed no matter how lazy you might be feeling! Use a gentle, fragrance-free makeup remover or micellar water. Nighttime is when your skin goes into repair mode, so it needs to be free of any pore clogging dirt and grime!

Perhaps your cheeks are dry, but you’re experiencing pimples on your forehead and chin. Then what? It is a good idea to use your rich, dry skin moisturiser on your oily T-zone?! This is where skincare trend “multi-masking” could be your go to! Multi-masking is all about customising your skincare routine to target specific areas of face. Intrigued? Keep reading to learn all there is to know about multi-masking and whether it’s right for your skin. What exactly is multi-masking? Think of multi-masking as the art of using different face masks on various parts of your skin simultaneously to help combat a variety of skin concerns. Its like creating a tailored treatment for your skin addressing those different concerns at the same time.So if your forehead is oily but your cheeks are dry and then you’re experiencing pesky pimples on your chin and nose, multi-masking could be the perfect remedy. Is multi-masking right for you? While multi-masking can be a game-changer for some, it might not be for everyone. Here are a few things to consider; Identify your skin concerns Take a closer look at your skin and pinpoint the specific areas that need attention. If you have multiple skin concerns, multi-masking will likely be a great option for you. Choose the right mask for the right areas of your face Face masks are designed to target specific areas of concern and therefore each face mask depending on that concern will be formulated with different key ingredients. You need to be sure you select masks that cater to your skin's individual needs. Whether it's hydration, exfoliation, oil or blemish control, there's a mask out there for you, just choose wisely! For areas of your face suffering from dry skin, you’ll best to use a hydrating mask. Oily T-zone, apply a purifying mask to that area. Certain areas of your skin looking dull and devitalised, applying a brightening mask will do wonders for your skin! For oily skin areas with enlarged pores we recommend Pevonia’s Age Correction Micro-Pores Bio-Active Mask. The exceptional mask has been uniquely formulated to control sebum production and help reveal a matte complexion with a more even-toned, visibly minimized pores and younger-looking skin.If certain areas of your skin are dealing with breakouts try Pevonia’s Pure Skin Charcoal Mask is the perfect antidote for congested, dull skin. It neutralises pollutants, draws out impurities and leaves skin glowing with pure freshness! For dry skin, we love a super hydrating mask like Pevonia’s Ageless Skin Collagen Mask, it combats dehydration in just 10 minutes. The rich texture is a soothing balm as your skin literally drinks in the moisture leaving it both dewy and hydrated. And if skin is a little dull Pevonia’s Brightening Green Apple Mask is the best! It’s a clay-based mask to deep cleanse the pores and beautifully brighten skin tone! Patch test new masks first Before slathering different masks all over your face, it's crucial to do a patch test first. This will help you determine if your skin reacts well to the ingredients in each mask. Don’t overdo it While multi-masking can be both effective and fun! Don’t go overboard and over apply! Applying too many products at once can overwhelm your skin and lead to irritation. Its best to stick to 3 masks maximum at once. What are the benefits of multi-masking? By targeting different areas of your face with specific treatments, you can address multiple concerns simultaneously. It's like giving your skin a tailored spa treatment, leaving you with a refreshed, rejuvenated, and glowing complexion all over. How do you apply the masks? Using a brush or your fingers, carefully and evenly apply each mask to the appropriate area of your face. Then sit back and relax for 10 minutes while the masks work their magic. Remove with lukewarm water. The best makeup tips for sensitive skin

by Jo Boyden on Oct 12 2023
If you suffer from sensitive skin, you’ll know that makeup can be somewhat of a challenge! After all you don’t want to spend your hard-earned dollars purchasing products that are only going to exacerbate your already compromised complexion!Unfortunately when it comes to sensitive skin, choosing the right makeup products for your skin’s specific needs, as well as adopting gentle preparation and application techniques, are imperative! To help guide you, below we reveal the top 9 makeup tips for sensitive skin sufferers and the best makeup products for you to try too! Products that will both help conceal and sooth your sensitive skin without any irritation. Sound good? Keep reading! Understand your skin Before you even consider your makeup, you need to really understand your skin. As well as being sensitive, is it dry? Oily? Combination perhaps? Do you have any specific skin conditions like rosacea or eczema? Are their certain ingredients that cause your skin to flair up? Understanding your skins unique needs will help you choose the right products. Check ingredients When selecting makeup products for sensitive skin, read labels carefully. You want to avoid highly fragranced products which are very likely to cause a negative reaction with sensitive skin. Also avoid, drying alcohols, witch hazel, citrus and products that contain a high % of essential oils. Another problem can be preservatives, particularly methylisothiazolinone and methylcholorisothiazoline which are often used to replace parabens, these are known sensitisers when used in leave on products.Instead look for terms like “fragrance-free” and “hypoallergenic”. This means that the makeup has been tested and proven to be less likely to cause irritation. Also check the label for ”non-comedogenic”. Non-comedogenic makeup is less likely to clog your pores, which can lead to breakouts.Mineral makeup will be your because bet, because its fragrance-free, hypoallergic and non-comedogenic and it tends to be packed with soothing, skin loving ingredients instead of ingredients that can cause irritation. Choose the right shade When it comes to choosing colours avoid products that are too yellow. Red skin and yellow makeup = orange complexion. Neutral shades are best for you and will help reduce the redness harmoniously. Patch test your products Before applying any new product to your face we recommend patch testing first to check for any allergic reactions or irritation. Either apply the product on an area like the back of your wrist or by apply a very small amount to your jawline. Make sure your skin is properly prepped Before diving into makeup, it’s imperative to start with a clean canvas. Use a gentle, sensitive skin cleanser to remove any impurities. Next, it’s time to moisturise. Sensitive skin can be on the dry side too, so it’s important to add nourishment. Opt for a moisturiser specifically designed to sooth and hydrate sensitive skin, this will lock in hydration and create a smooth base for the makeup to follow! We are loving Phytomer's Douceur Marine Soothing Moisturising Cream. It is beautifully silky in texture, soothing on the skin and visibly reduces skin redness. What’s more, its deeply hydrating without feeling greasy or heavy.Take only the size of a pea and pat the product into the skin to allow it to absorb slowly and naturally. You should also add a sunscreen with high SPF for a layer of added protection, this will help prevent sun damage and premature skin ageing like fines lines and wrinkles. We recommend: ELES Luminous Defence Brightening Day Protection 50 It’s time to prime All hail the makeup primer! This product will really be your best friend. A makeup primer will not only help create longer lasting makeup, but it will create a barrier between your skin and makeup reducing the risk of irritation too! Choose a gentle formula. We love ELES Retexturizing Face PrimerTo learn more about primers and just how good they are click here. Go light If you use foundation, go for a breathable, lightweight liquid formula. We love the best-selling ELES Liquid Powder Mineral Foundation. It's silky, mineral-enriched and provides skin with broad spectrum sun protection. It liquid formulated glides beautifully onto sensitive skin setting as a soft, powder finish, however it does not clog skin! Brilliant stuff.Another option is to look for multi-tasking products that treat, conceal and even tone in one. A tall ask? Not when it comes to CC Creams! These miracle formulas are colour correcting. So instead of applying a thick layer of opaque makeup to cover redness, the CC Cream’s Photonic Crystal Technology “offsets” redness, wrinkles and other skin imperfections, subtly illuminating the skin. This means less coverage is required, better for your sensitive skin! Try: ELES Luminous CC Cream 20, you’ll be so glad you did!To add colour or depth to your skin, you can incorporate a blush or bronzer too. You’re best to just choose mineral formulations once again, but make sure you choose powder over cream base. Cream-based products can sometimes clog pores or cause unnecessary irritation. Less is always more It's better to start with a light layer of makeup and build up coverage as needed than to apply too much makeup at once. Too much makeup can irritate sensitive skin and clog your pores. Remove your makeup at the end of the day. It's imperative to remove any makeup from your skin at the end of the day. Leaving impurities in the skin while you sleep will lead to more sensitivity! Allow your skin to perform its natural repair and regeneration at night by removing all your makeup and the day’s pollutants and you’ll wake up to a much calmer skin. While it may be tempting to coat your skin in rich and protective creams and oils, it’s better to drench it with lightweight moisture that will encourage better cell regeneration and protein rebuilding. We adore Phytomer's Night Recharge Youth Enhancing Cream. Perfectly silky and soothing it literally envelopes your skin in nourishment and comfort and helps boost your skin's renewal as you sleep so you’ll wake up to calmer, plumper skin by morning. Obsessed.
Ceramide

Ceramides: Everything you need to know

by Jo Boyden on Oct 05 2023
If you’ve been hearing a lot of buzz about ceramides but wondering what they actually are you’ve come to the right place.Unlike your hero ingredients hyaluronic acid, retinol, vitamin c, collagen and more, ceramides are the unsung heroes of the skincare world, quietly working behind the scenes to keep your skin healthy, hydrated and protected! Whether you have dry skin, sensitive skin or just want to maintain your skins natural glow, ceramides will be a valuable addition to your skincare arsenal. But before we talk about the best ceramide skincare, we need to understand what ceramides actually are and how they will help your skin. What are ceramides?Ceramides are natural lipids (fats) found naturally in high concentration in the cell membranes within our epidermis (the top 5 layers of our skin), however, ceramides are especially concentrated in the stratum corneum (the outermost layer of the epidermis.) Think of this layer as your skin’s protective barrier. How do ceramides help our skin? Barrier protection Ceramides help to protect and strengthen your skins barrier, shielding it from external aggressors such as harsh weather conditions, bacteria and pollutants. This helps reduce skin redness, irritation and sensitivity. Moisture retention Ceramides help your skin hold onto moisture. They act like little sponges, preventing water loss and keeping your skin hydrated and plump. Skin Conditions If you suffer from skin conditions like eczema or psoriasis, ceramides can be especially beneficial. They help repair the damaged skin barrier, reducing inflammation and irritation. Anti-Ageing As we age, ceramide levels in our skin dramatically decrease, leading to dryness and fine lines. Using ceramide-infused products can help counteract these effects, leaving your skin looking more youthful.Using skincare rich in ceramides, or products formulated with ingredients that stimulate ceramide production can help counteract these effects. These products can help improve skin health, boost hydration, protect against harmful UV rays, rejuvenate skin and boost barrier function. Just remember no ceramides? Nothing to keep all those hydrating ingredients from evaporating from the skin. You'll usually find ceramides in moisturisers, but you also can find them as a key ingredient in cleansers, serums, and other skin-care products too! Here are our top five ceramide rich skincare favourites. Ceramide skincarePevonia Rejuvenating Dry Skin CreamAlthough light and gentle on the skin, this ceramide moisturiser is one of the most nurturing and nourishing moisturisers for dry skin! by Jo Boyden on Sep 15 2023
If you’re tired of dealing with facial redness, especially when it seems to pop up at the most inconvenient of times, we feel you! Whether its due to having sensitive or reactive skin, because you suffer from rosacea perhaps, or as a result of hormonal hot flushes, we’ve got you covered with these 11 game-changing ways to radically reduce facial redness for good! Firstly though, what causes facial redness exactly?Facial redness can be the cause of a number of reasons. From as named above – sensitive and reactive skin, rosacea symptoms, hormonal changes, sun burnt skin even. There are many reasons you might be suffering from a red face these can include;Hormonal changesRosaceaEczemaDermatitisSunburnSensitive and reactive skinAlcohol intolerance The best ways to reduce your red skin; Gentle cleansing is key Start with the basics – choose a mild, hydrating cleanser. Formulated with Chamomile and Calendula it delivers soothing, calming and desensitizing benefits to your delicate skin. Cool off with a cold compress When your face is feeling particularly fiery, try a cold compress. A soft cloth soaked in cold water can work wonders to calm redness and soothe your skin. Stay hydrated When it comes to facial redness water is your best friend. Staying hydrated helps maintain your skin's natural moisture balance. It's like giving your skin a drink of water from the inside out. You’ll also want to up the anti when it comes to nourishing your skin topically. Make sure you moisturise twice a day and add a hydrating serum into your daily routine too.Try: Pevonia Hyaluronic Acid Hydra Serum. Featuring one of the highest concentrations of hyaluronic acid on the skincare market, its honestly like a burst of nourishment for the skin. And combined with a powerful duo of marine collagen and hibiscus esculentus extract it also provides optimum anti-ageing results. It penetrates deeply into the skin delivering smoother, calmer, softer, plumper, firmer and brighter skin! What’s more it’s ideal for all skin types! Wear mineral makeup WE totally understand that when you suffer from rosacea or skin redness you aren’t likely to forego makeup altogether. It contains zero chemical nasties, instead, it’s packed with skin loving ingredients including vitamins A & E, can be used as a buildable foundation from natural sheer to polished opaque (dependant on what you need) and it’s highly compatible with common skin sensitivities, working wonders at camouflaging facial redness while protecting skin against ultraviolet damage too!Another good option is to try a colour corrector which will help visually correct redness and even out skin tone at the same time. Using one with UV protection will also help shield your sensitive skin from exposure that can aggravate skin sensitivities.Try: ELES Luminous CC Cream SPF 20. It’s a game changer when it comes to colour correcting red skin! It’s a lightweight, oil-free, colour correcting cream with broad spectrum protection that really does multi-task like no other! And while it’s technically not a foundation, the full coverage pigments cover facial redness—be it from rosacea, pimples, irritation, you name it—so well that you very well may be able to get away without wearing any other makeup. Be sunscreen savvy Sunscreen isn't just for sunny days. UV rays can exacerbate redness and inflammation. Opt for a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30 and apply it religiously, even on cloudy days.Try: ELES Luminous Defence Brightening Day Protection SPF 50. We understand that so many sunscreens feel greasy, don’t smell great or simply don’t sit well on our skin, and then there are those thick white sunscreens that look like a paste when applied too, the last thing you want to be worried about when your skin is already a little on the sensitive side. That’s why we love ELES Luminous Defence. It’s not greasy but instead silky soft, the scent isn’t unpleasant, and it applies beautifully to my skin. And thanks to its formulation its helps nourish and restore skins luminosity too, not to mention it’s high SPF of 50. Wear a soothing mask If your skin redness is potentially caused by dryness or inflammation a natural face mask or sheet mask specifically formulated to cool and calm skin can work wonders.Try: ELES Calming and Soothing Sheet Mask. Incorporating natural botanicals it soothes and reduces inflammation. Like a cool balm, this calming mask reduces redness and heat and restores a protective barrier to prevent moisture loss. Manage your stress Easier said than done I know! Especially if you are juggling life, kids, work….but stress can be a big trigger for facial redness so its important to incorporate stress management techniques into your daily routine. Try meditation, yoga or simply taking time out for yourself to relax and unwind whether that’s going for walks, reading a book or simply having time out in from of the tv. I highly recommend the app Headspace for meditation. And for some soothing sounds try ambient relaxation music on Spotify. Bliss. Choose your skincare products wisely Check the ingredients list of the skincare products you purchase. You want to steer clear of products containing alcohol or fragrances which can exacerbate redness and instead opt for products specifically targeted for sensitive skin which include soothing ingredients such as aloe vera, chamomile, green tea or niacinamide. These can help cool and calm any inflammation as well as reduce your facial redness. Consider topical creams If you know that the redness on your skin is caused by rosacea, you can also look to certain skincare ranges to treat your symptoms.Try: Pevonia’s best-selling RS2 line. It can help soothe the skin as well as successfully elevating the symptoms. Revise your diet Underlying facial redness can actually be related to what you eat so making simple changes to your diet can make all the difference. We recommend an anti-inflammatory diet, which includes green leafy vegetables, fish, essential oils, and low-glycemic fruits. Try to give simple sugars, grains, non-organic meats, dairy, and high-glycemic fruits a miss..and avoid triggers such as spicy foods, citrus, tomato, chocolate, and cinnamon. Make lifestyle changes While facial redness can be a frustrating problem, the cause can often be more than skin deep. This means that the solution can require certain lifestyle changes in addition to the steps mentioned above. Try decreasing sun exposure, don’t go walking in the wind! If you smoke, don’t! Stop drinking all the hot drinks and make sure you drink cold water when ever you are exercising. Remember to be patient and consistent when managing facial redness and don't get discouraged if you don't see immediate results.
probiotics

What is probiotic skincare and is it effective?

by Jo Boyden on Jun 09 2023
If you keep up with the latest beauty trends, you’ve probably heard about probiotic skincare. It’s been making a buss in the beauty world for a few years now, but how exactly are probiotics good for your skin you might be wondering? Well wonder no more! We’re here to tell you all about probiotic skincare, and why this trend has taken the beauty industry by storm.Firstly though, what are probiotics?Probiotics are living microorganisms such as bacteria or yeast that are good for your health, particularly your digestive system, in fact they are usually associated with promoting gut health and are commonly referred to as “good” or “friendly” bacteria. How are probiotics good for the skin?Probiotics work their magic by helping to balance the skin's natural microbiome, which is essentially a collection of billions of microorganisms living on its surface (eek!) Just like in our digestive system, a healthy balance of bacteria on the skin is crucial for maintaining a strong and resilient barrier against external aggressors. Why choose probiotic skincare?Probiotic skincare offers many benefits for your skin, not matter your skin type. Here are a few reasons why we love probiotic skincare; Probiotic skincare is essential for restoring balance Modern lifestyles, environmental factors, and harsh skincare products can disrupt the delicate balance of our skin's microbiome. Probiotics help replenish and maintain a diverse and healthy microbial community, which in turn supports a stronger skin barrier and a more radiant complexion. It’s great for soothing sensitive skin If you struggle with sensitive or reactive skin, probiotics might become your new best friend. Probiotics can alleviate redness, inflammation, and irritation, providing a soothing effect on the skin. By calming down angry skin, probiotics offer relief to those with conditions like eczema or rosacea. It helps fight acne and blemishes Acne-prone skin often suffers from an imbalance in the microbiome, leading to breakouts and unwanted blemishes. Probiotics have the ability to combat acne by inhibiting the growth of harmful bacteria, reducing inflammation, and promoting a healthier skin environment. Probiotics in skincare help to counteract signs of ageing As we age, our skin's microbiome undergoes changes that contribute to the signs of aging. Probiotics have shown promise in supporting collagen production, improving skin elasticity, and reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. They also aid in maintaining moisture levels, giving you a more youthful and plump complexion. Probiotics in skincare actually enhances the efficiency of other active ingredients Adding probiotics to skincare formulations can boost the effectiveness of other active ingredients. Probiotics help create a good environment for these actives to work optimally, ensuring you get the most out of your skincare routine. Now that you know why probiotics are the talk of the town, how can you incorporate them into your skincare routine?Whether you're looking to restore balance, soothe sensitive skin, combat acne, or achieve a more youthful complexion, probiotic skincare will help! sheet mask

Everything you need to know about sheet masks

by Jo Boyden on May 12 2023
If you’re not familiar with sheet masks or you simply haven’t had a chance to try one yet, you might be wondering what all the hype is about when it comes to this popular skincare trend. After all why not just stick to a traditional cream mask right? The thing is like all masks, sheet masks offer a multitude of benefits and are a great place to start if you are new to this vital step in your skincare routine. And no, sheet masks aren’t a new phenomenon, in fact they’ve been around for decades, but finally they are getting the wrap they deserve and for very good reason. From what they are to their many benefits, keep reading as we reveal everything you need to know about sheet masks. What are sheet masks? Different to your traditional cream masks, sheet masks are single-use face masks made out of a thin, often cotton or paper-like material designed to fit over your face. The sheet is cut to fit the shape of your face (with holes for the eyes, nose and mouth) and is soaked in a serum or essence. These serums are typically packed with all kinds of beneficial ingredients, like hyaluronic acid, vitamin C, and antioxidants, that are designed to penetrate deeply into the skin and provide a variety of benefits. Why are sheet masks good? Sheet masks are seriously good for your skin for a number of reasons, in fact they provide the perfect balance of skincare and pamper! They are a great way to provide your skin with a big boost of hydration, nourishment and other skincare benefits. One of the great things about sheets masks is that they come in a number of formulations too – such as brightening and anti-ageing - so you can choose one that's tailored to your specific skin concerns. The sheet itself also helps to lock in the moisture and active ingredients, allowing for better absorption and therefore effectiveness.Another great thing about sheet masks is that they provide a relaxing and pampering experience, a weekly self-care ritual, which let’s face it we could all do with! This is because they literally force you to take some ‘me time’, a break from your daily routine to sit back and zone out for 15-20 minutes while the sheet does its thing to your skin! It’s like having a mini spa session in the comfort of your own home, who wouldn’t love that! And the end result? You feel better and your skin certainly looks it too! Finally sheet masks are relatively affordable and incredibly easy and convenient to use (just open sachet, unfold the mask, apply it to your face and wait for it to work its magic!) They are also great for travel or on-the-go use as they’re lightweight (they come in single sachets) and take up very little space. Are sheet masks right for your skin? Sheet masks can be beneficial for all skin types but like with any skincare product its important to choose the right one for your specific skin concerns. If you have reactive or sensitive skin just be cautious and be mindful of the ingredients and avoid sheet masks that contain fragrances or essential oils which can be irritating to some sensitive skin. Here are our top picks; Sensitive skin If your skin is on the sensitive side look for sheet masks enriched with soothing and cooling ingredients such as aloe, green tea, lavender, and tea tree to help nourish and calm your skin while reducing any inflammation. We LOVE the ELES Calming and Soothing Sheet MaskAgeing skin If you have mature skin, opt for sheet masks that contain ingredients such as, collagen, peptides or retinol, which can help to improve skin texture and the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Try the ELES Youth Recovery Sheet Mask Not only will it improve skin’s texture and help with tackling any premature lines and wrinkles, it also helps to brighten and even skin tone.Dry, dull, discoloured skin And if you’re dealing with dryness, dehydration, discolouration and dullness and could do with an instant pick-me-up, as well as boost of hydration, a sheet mask that contains nourishing and brightening ingredients like hyaluronic acid, vitamin c or niacinamide is the way to go! We highly recommend the ELES Hydrating and Brightening Sheet Mask, it’s fantastic! It plumps the skin from within, radically reducing moisture loss, plus extra bonus it helps to prevent hyperpigmentation and give your skin a fabulous, healthy glow. Oily and blemished prone skin If you are prone to oily skin and breakouts a purifying sheet mask should be your go-to because it helps absorb excess oil, unclog pores, and remove impurities. We can’t get enough of the Purifying Sheet Mask from ELES, infused with clarifying ingredients like charcoal and nourishing, calming and anti-ageing ingredients including hyaluronic acid, centella asiatica, camellia sinensis leaf extract and aloe, it reduces shine, hydrates skin, soothes inflammation, and prevents future breakouts, leaving skin feeling refreshed, balanced, and deeply cleansed. How do you apply sheet masks? Sheet masks are designed to fit over your face. Using one is pretty simple. Here are the steps; Start with clean, dry skin (best to wash your face with a gentle cleanser and pat it dry before applying). Take the sheet mask out of its packaging and unfold it. Smooth it onto your face, making sure it’s lined up with your eyes, nose and mouth. Press the sheet mask onto your skin to make sure it’s adhering properly (you want all the ingredients to properly absorb into your skin). Relax for 15-20 minutes and let the mask work its magic. Enjoy the “me” time! Remove the sheet mask. Finally gently massage any remaining serum into the skin (this is often the case as sheet masks are literally drenched in product). That’s it! Now reap in the benefits. Happy masking!

Damaged skin barrier? How to repair and take care of it

by Jo Boyden on Apr 28 2023
If you’re suddenly suffering from dry, irritated and sensitive skin it’s possible your skin barrier could be compromised. Fear not though, a damaged skin barrier can happen to the best of us, even devout skincare enthusiasts! Thankfully it’s possible to fix a damaged skin barrier – as long as you know how! Keep reading as we talk all things skin barrier, from what it is, to how to fix it and the best tips and products to use. Firstly though when exactly is your skin barrier? Our skin barrier is the outermost layer of our skin. You could call it your ‘shield’ as it literally serves as a protective barrier against the outside world! Be it environmental toxins, bacteria, and other harmful substances.Technically knows as the stratum corneum, it’s a complex system of lipids, proteins and cells which not only protects your face from external aggressors but helps retain moisture in your skin keeping it hydrated and healthy too. What causes a damaged skin barrier?Unfortunately our skin barrier can be very fragile and several factors can compromise or damage it, these include; Harsh soaps and skincare products. Using products that contain harsh chemicals can strip the skin of its natural oils and disrupt the skin barrier. Hot water Yes, something as simple as washing your face with water that is too hot can strip the skin of its natural oils leading to dryness and skin sensitivities. Sun exposure Prolonged exposure to the sun’s harmful UV rays can seriously damage the skin barrier and lead to premature ageing. Environmental pollutants Everything from air pollution and cigarette smoke to the weather and blue light from our screens can cause havoc with our skin. Genetics Some people are just more prone to skin barrier damage due to their genetics unfortunately, this doesn’t mean you are doomed, it just means you need to be more religious about looking after your skin and using specific skincare products to protect your skin barrier. Age Our ceramide levels decrease significantly as we age so our skin’s ability to hold onto moisture eventually becomes compromised too. What is the best way to repair your skin’s barrier? If your skin barrier is damaged there are several things you can do to repair it including; Use gentle cleansers Choose skincare products that are gentle and free from harsh chemicals. Look for products specifically formulated for sensitive skin. Avoid hot water Always use lukewarm water instead of hot water when washing your face. Make sure you moisturise morning and night Use a moisturiser that is specifically formulated to repair the skin barrier. Look for products rich in ceramides (an essentially fatty molecule called a lipid which holds your skin cells together, without ceramides there is nothing to keep all those hydrating ingredients from evaporating from the skin!). We love Pevonia’s best selling Age Correction Marine Collagen Cream. It rejuvenates skin cells while softening fine lines and wrinkles and replenishing vital nutrients. Avoid harsh skincare products Steer clear from products that contain alcohol, fragrances, and other harsh chemicals. Products your skin from the sun, every single day! Using a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 will not only help repair your skin but protect it too and not just from damage to your skin’s barrier but premature ageing as well. Avoid smoking Smoking can and will damage your skin’s barrier and lead to premature ageing. Use skincare products that help combat environmental damage on our skin If you live in the city, try using products that have been carefully formulated to combat environmental damage. We love Phytomer’s CityLife Collection. Eat a healthy diet A diet rich in antioxidants and healthy fats can help support the skin barrier and keep it healthy! Stay hydrated Having a damaged barrier often results in a dehydrated complexion from the skin’s deeper layers so it’s vital to replenish that lost moisture with lightweight serums formulated with hydration heroes like hyaluronic acid. Serums have the ability to penetrate deep into the skin layers, whereas moisturisers tend to hydrate the skin’s surface. We highly recommend Pevonia’s Hyaluronic Acid Hydra Serum and Hyaluronic Acid Hydra Mist for that extra boost of moisture.Drinking plenty of water daily (8 glasses is the recommended amount) is essential too! It will not only help repair damaged skin but help maintain a healthy and hydrated skin barrier once repaired too!

Makeup primer – do you really need to use it?

by Jo Boyden on Dec 23 2022
From concealers to foundations, bronzers to blushes and more, with the multitude of makeup products available to ‘perfect’ our face these days, it’s no wonder some of us might question which products are really necessary and which ones we might be ok to forgo. For many, makeup primers tend to fall into the latter category, but we are here to tell you why this underrated makeup staple is a necessity when it comes to your daily makeup routine! Keep reading as we discuss everything there is to know about makeup primers, from what they are, to their numerous benefits, as well as our favourite primers for all skin types too! What is a makeup primer and what does it really do?Creating an extra layer between your skin and makeup, face primers are used to plump fine lines, blur impurities and blemishes, smooth skin, and help makeup last all day without caking, creasing or the need for constant touch-ups. They really are key to achieving smooth, flawless skin that’s perfectly prepped for your foundation! Depending on your skin concerns, you can choose from a hydrating primer, a mattifying primer, an illuminating primer or a colour-correcting makeup primer. What are the benefits of using a makeup primer? They provide the perfect base for your foundation Even though you might well have followed a rigorous skincare routine, your complexion can sometimes still be a little uneven, enter makeup primer! A makeup primer provides the perfect base for seamless foundation application free of any patches! This is because a primers main job is to fill the open pores of your skin and smooth it in preparation for your makeup to follow. They keep makeup intact all day long Ready to say goodbye to touch-ups and reapplication throughout the day? With a face primer in your makeup arsenal, you can enjoy a long-lasting, smudge-free complexion all day long. They can blur imperfections While makeup primers won’t enhance your skin quite like a bronzer, or conceal pesky pimples like a foundation, they are formulated to hide and blur imperfections! They are in fact touted as the photoshop of the makeup world! How they actually blur imperfections is down to two key ingredients: silicone particles which “fill in the gaps” on the surface of skin to even it out, and light-diffusing particles which scatter the light that hits the surface of the skin, creating an optical illusion that tricks the eye and makes pores and fine lines less visible. Sounds ideal right? They combat shine This will be music to those of us with oily skin! Indeed mattifying face primers can combat shine by balancing out excess oil, this in turn creates a smooth base for your makeup so it won’t slide off your face come lunchtime! They correct discolouration if you struggle with discolouration or hyperpigmentation, a face primer can be an important component in your makeup routine. Colour-correcting primers even out the skin tone and neutralize discoloration as the tinted pigments, antioxidants, and vitamin E brighten skin and minimize visible imperfections. They are packed with skin loving ingredients Many face primers, including our range of ELES makeup primers, are like an extension of your skincare, enriched with skin-loving ingredients including Vitamins A, C & E and salicylic acid to not only promote skin cell turnover and nourish and hydrate the skin but tackle and conceal common concerns like dullness, dryness and redness too! When do you apply a face primer? In terms of application, a face primer should be applied to perfectly cleansed skin, after your moisturiser and before you apply your makeup. Can you use primer without makeup?Absolutely! For no-makeup days, applying a primer is one of the easiest ways to conceal imperfections, colour correct, mattify the skin and combat shine and oiliness. You can apply your face primer after your daily serums and moisturiser. Are makeup primers for everyone?Whether you love a less-is-more makeup look or prefer dramatic glam, a makeup primer is the perfect tool, and you can choose the right primer for your skin's specific needs, from hydrating to pore perfecting and more…Our top picksFor dry to sensitive skinIf your skin is a little dry, opt for a multi-functional face primer that will keep makeup in place, while hydrating, firming and plumping the skin with a gentle blend of nourishing botanical oils. Try the ELES Retexturizing Face Primer. Not only does this soothing, lightweight serum feel like actual silk on your skin, it basically helps protect, condition, smooth and blur out skin imperfections too! Want to look like a filtered goodness, and have makeup last the distance, try this! For combination to oily skinIf your skin tends to be on the oilier side, we recommend opting for the ELES Pore Perfecting Face Primer. Not only does it keep makeup in place it also combats shine, absorbs excess oil and also reduces the appearance of pores to keep your foundation looking smooth and flawless! Genius!

AHAs, BHAs and your skin: Everything you need to know

by Jo Boyden on Dec 15 2022
If you are a lover of skincare, you’ve likely heard of AHA and BHAs, but do you know what it is they actually are, what they can do for your skin or what the difference between these exfoliating acids really are? Keep reading for everything you need to know about BHA, AHAs and your skin. What are AHAs and how do they work?AHAs, or otherwise known as Alpha Hydroxy Acids, are water-soluble acids derived from fruits and plants. They’re considered a chemical exfoliant, which means that they use chemicals — aka acids or enzymes — to buff away dead skin cells. The most common AHA’s in skincare are glycolic acid, lactic acid, citric acid and malic acid and they are typically found in cleansers and exfoliators but can sometimes feature in masks, serums and moisturisers too!AHAs work by breaking down the ‘glue’ that binds dead skin cells to the skin. Because they have a large molecule size, they primarily work on the top layers of the skin, making them particularly beneficial for those with dry, dehydrated or hyperpigmented skin. By removing dead and dry skin cells, AHAs smooth skin texture, brighten skin tone, fade pigmentation, and can also reduce the chance of breakouts from occurring! What are BHA’s and how do they work? The most well-known BHA is salicylic acid – chances are you’ll have heard of this one if you have breakout-prone skin, since it’s found in many spot treatments.Like AHAs, BHAs also work by breaking down the ‘glue’ that binds dull, dead skin to the surface, however they work on a much deeper level than AHAs, penetrating deep into the pores, unclogging and removing dead skin cells, excess sebum and congestion. This is because BHAs are oil-soluble, making them an effective treatment for oily, breakout and acne-prone skin. Because BHAs can penetrate so deep, removing both dead skin cells and excess oil (which when combined can clog pores and lead to breakouts) they are an effective whitehead and blackhead buster. BHAs also act as an anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory, so they work to kill acne-causing bacteria and reduce the redness and swelling of spots too. What is the difference between AHA’s and BHA’s?Although both of these ingredients are exfoliating acids and work to improve the appearance of skin by exfoliating it, they actually work in different ways. AHA’s work to break down the glue that holds dead skin cells together while BHA’s go deeper into the pores to remove dirt and oil.Are AHAs and BHAs good for all skin types? If you have oily and blemish prone skin, you’re best to choose skincare products formulated with BHA’s. If your skin tends to be on the dry, dehydrated side, AHA’s should be your go to.While these acids can dramatically improve the appearance of your skin, it’s important to remember that both AHAs and BHAs are active ingredients which (if overused) can impact your skin’s natural barrier, cause irritation, and increase skin’s UV sensitivity. For this reason, it’s essential to understand how to use acids properly, what to do if you over exfoliate your skin, and the best AHA and BHA skincare for your skin type. How to use AHA’s and BHA’s properlyAs with most skincare ingredients, especially exfoliants, AHAs and BHAs have their downsides, including possible sun sensitivity, peeling and itching, so you need to be sure not to overuse any products formulated with AHAs and BHA’s and be extra diligent about slathering on your sunscreen…daily, all year round! Before you incorporate AHA and/or BHA products into your daily skincare routine, you need to consider the other skincare products you are using, paying close attention to the ingredient list to avoid irritation since AHAs and BHA’s might not be compatible with them. It is best to steer clear of your retinol cream or serum on a day you are using AHA and BHA rich skincare as the combination may cause excessive skin sensitivity, irritation, and redness. On the other hand AHAs and BHAs can be mixed with moisturizing ingredients like hyaluronic acid, ceramides, to get effective and long lasting results.AHAs and BHAs themselves can be combined. However AHAs such as glycolic acid, tend to be best for dry, dehydrated skin and surface-level skin concerns like acne scaring, whereas BHAs such as salicylic acid, are best for oily, blemish, and acne-prone skin types. You can use both by including skincare products which contain both ingredients, or by alternating your products. Try these AHA skincare favourites;Pevonia Renewing Glycocides CreamIf your skin is looking a tad dull and devitalised and you’re forever coveting that ‘insta-glow’, this product is your answer! Formulated with most renowned AHA glycolic acid combined with hydration hero Hyaluronic Acid, it works to dissolve dead skin cells, improving skin texture and diminishing fine lines too! Skin resurfaces soother, brighter and younger…seriously.Phytomer Emergence Even Skin Tone Refining SerumThis lightweight, refining face serum formulated with a powerful AHA formulation, visibly reduces the appearances of imperfections. It diminishes the appearance of uneven pigmentation, acne, enlarged pores and dark spots! Try these BHA skincare favourites;Medicalia Clarifying CleanserRich in BHA Salicylic Acid, this cleanser works quickly to eliminate toxins, impurities, surface bacteria, makeup and oil to reveal clearer, brighter skin. Pore size is also visibly reduced!Pevonia Clarifyl Spot TreatmentThis anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial, soothing spot treatment combines the best ingredients to combat the war on pimples and provide exceptional, visible results almost overnight! Encouraging rapid healing, it keeps skin follicles clean, clear, and bacteria-free.

When to use a facial mask and the best one for your skin

by Jo Boyden on Nov 18 2022
From clay masks to charcoal, sheet masks, to exfoliating masks, what used to be a facial indulgence has now become part of our everyday beauty routine and for very good reason, but when exactly should you be using a face mask though? Morning or night? Daily or weekly? We asked the experts for the lowdown on this vital skincare step. From why and when you should be using a face mask to the best ones for your skin, we have all the info you need to know. What is a facial mask?A face mask isn’t just an indulgent treat, it is key to tackling a multitude of skin concerns such as dehydration, acne, dryness, ageing and more! Face masks are specifically designed to be used intermittently to give your skin an instant boost but that’s not all! They offer a multitude of other benefits too. What are the main benefits of using a face mask? They are deep cleansingApplying face masks offer many physical and therapeutic benefits, but first and foremost masks provide cleansing on a deep, deep level, benefiting the skin in multiple ways. Don’t get me wrong daily cleansing is an imperative part of your skincare routine, but applying a mask once or twice a week will take that process to a whole other level by removing any remaining makeup, excess oil, dead skin cells and other impurities that have sat on your skin’s surface, as well as beneath the upper layers of the epidermis. They provide immediate resultsWhile with most face masks you’ll need to leave it on for a little while, the results are instant and go way beyond the impact of your daily skincare routine! The right face mask can help hydrate skin, remove excess oils, improve the appearance of pores and more and after every application your skin will immerge tightened, toned, softer, smoother, and let’s not forget positively glowing! They are pampering and therapeuticApplying a face mask is a great excuse for a little ‘me time’. It will not only address your skins needs but also make you feel fabulous in little to no time! This is because a face mask can lift your spirit by stimulating your senses and allow you a moment (or few moments should I say!) of indulgent comfort. Ahhhhh. They help all your other skincare products to better penetrate the skin for optimum resultsMany of us will be religious when it comes to our daily skincare ritual but if you really want all your products to absorb into your skin both quickly and deeply than a face mask is a necessity. By using a mask regularly, it will assist in enabling all the amazing ingredients from your skincare to penetrate deep into your skin essentially making your products work harder and more effectively than ever before. They are the perfect product for everyone to use no matter how sensitive or reactive your skin might beThis is because there is a mask for every skin type and concern. From dryness to inflammation, redness to acne, whatever your skin type there is the ideal mask to give your skin that instant boost it needs. What are the different types of facial masks? There is no one size fits all face mask, in fact there are six different types and are dependent on your skin type and concern.Cream MasksThese are best for dry, dehydrated and ageing skin. They are formulated with nourishing ingredients to add much needed moisture and nutrients back into the skin. Skin appears plumper, brighter and younger looking after every use.Gel MasksThe best choice for oily skin types, gel masks are lightweight. They minimise oil production and tighten the appearance of pores.Clay MasksThese are great for those suffering from blemish or acne prone skin as they provide skin with a through deep cleanse effectively removing debris from clogged pores.Warming MasksThese contain active ingredients that make the skin feel warm. Because they increase blood flow in the skin, skin may feel a tingling sensation and appear a little flushed after. They are best for skin that needs invigorating.Exfoliating MasksThese are formulated with AHA’s and BHA’s to help remove dead skin cell build up. They can come in the form of a chemical peel or be made with fine particles such as jojoba granules. They help enhance the skin’s natural turnover process and render dull skin beautifully bright.Sheet MasksSheet masks are different to every other type of mask in that they don’t come in a pot or tub but instead in a packet for single use. The ‘sheet’ is face-shaded (as in it features holes for your eyes, mouth and nose so it can completely cover your entire face) and is usually made of fiber, cotton, cellulose, or coconut pulp. Sheet masks are soaked in a liquid cocktail of hydrating, brightening or anti-ageing ingredients and work instantly on the skin boosting hydration and glow. How often and when should you use a face mask?We recommend adding a face mask to your skincare routine once or twice a week, morning or night, it just needs to come after your usual routine of cleansing and toning first as face masks are most beneficial when applied to clean skin free of impurities and excess oil. This way your skin is better equipped to absorb all the goodness of a face mask. How should you apply a face mask? This will alter slightly depending on the face mask you are using but generally speaking you should apply it evenly (no need to slather it on) all over your entire face. Don’t forget your neck and décolleté too! Like your face, these delicate areas also take on visible signs of ageing, often much earlier than the face because of their over exposure to the sun and environmental stress (let’s face it we don’t give our neck and décolleté nearly as much love as our faces, often a forgotten part of our skincare routine we don’t always apply sunscreen either! How long should you leave a face mask on?The general rule of thumb for the majority of face masks is 15 minutes. Sheet masks can be left on for up to 30 minutes, while certain gel masks can be left on as an overnight treatment to deeply hydrate your skin while you sleep. How do you remove a face mask?To remove your face mask use lukewarm water and either your fingers or a damp flannel or face cloth. Just be sure it’s clean and soft so it doesn’t irritate your skin. What is the best face mask for your skin?Prone to pesky pimples or all out acne?A detoxifying charcoal mask will be your best bet! Pevonia’s Pure Skin Charcoal Mask is the perfect antidote for congested, dull skin. It neutralises pollutants, draws out impurities and leaves skin glowing with pure freshness!Suffering from sensitive skin? You will love soothing masks like Phytomer’s Accept Comfort Mask. Beauty Collective - Exfoliation and Sensitive Skin

Exfoliation and sensitive skin, here’s what to do

by Jo Boyden on Nov 04 2022
If you suffer from sensitive skin the idea of exfoliating might scare you. After all you don’t want to exacerbate your already irritated skin, right? The thing is exfoliation should be a crucial part of your regular skincare routine no matter what your skin type or concern. Why? Because it offers a multitude of benefits, from removing dulling dead skin cells, to preventing clogged pores, encouraging cell turnover (so those healthy, new cells can come through) and more! In fact, it’s the one step in your skincare routine which will really help reveal glowy, silky-soft skin! However, before exfoliating your face, you do need to know how often to exfoliate and what exfoliating products will be best suited to your sensitive skin. As experts in skincare, we are here to guide you. Keep reading as we discuss exfoliation and sensitive skin and what it is you should do. Which type of exfoliators are best for sensitive skin? There are three different types of exfoliants – physical (scrubs which contain beads or small grains to manually remove surface debris), chemical (acid exfoliants which chemically dissolve debris) and enzyme (plant or fruit derived exfoliants that generally breaks down the ‘glue’ that hold dead skin cells together shedding old cells). For sensitive skin its essential to avoid scrubbing, this will only irritate already reactive skin and can lead to facial redness. Instead use a mild chemical exfoliator, containing AHA’s (alpha hydroxy acids) such as citric, glycolic and lactic acid, or enzyme exfoliators. These earth-sourced ingredients essentially dissolve dead skin cells as opposed to physically scrubbing them off.Be a little more cautious with exfoliators formulated with BHA’s (beta hydroxy acids) such as salicylic acid. While salicylic is great for acne prone skin it can be too harsh for those this skin sensitivities. How often should you exfoliate if you have sensitive skin?Once a week is fine, if your skin can tolerate it, increasing to two times can be beneficial but don’t rush it! It’s important to be consistent and go slowly to avoid any additional irritation. After all over-exfoliating can compromise your skin’s natural protective barrier – the surface of your skin which has a protective layer of oils and lipids which helps lock in essential moisture and keeps irritants out! What are the best exfoliating products to use on sensitive skin?Phytomer Vegetal Exfoliant with natural enzymesWe highly recommend this very gentle enzyme exfoliant. Perfect for for even the most sensitive or rosacea prone skin types, it uses natural enzymes to encourage cell turnover without scrubbing or irritating skin.“I have the most sensitive skin, so I can’t use exfoliants that contain microbeads or scrubs…this is a great alternative. It sloughs off all of the dead skin cells without ever irritating my skin! I use it once a week at the minimum, and it keeps my face glowing and smooth. It’s the most wonderful exfoliant ever!” Sarah RPevonia Enzymo Spherides Peeling CreamThis mini facial in a jar (literally) will do wonders for all skin types even the most sensitive of skin types. And no don’t let the word ‘peel’ put you off! It combines natural fruit pineapple and papaya enzymes with citric and to gently and effectively eliminate impurities, blackheads, dead cells and toxins and it’s so easy to use! Simply apply a thin layer to cleansed skin, wet your fingertips with warm water (this will help to ‘wake up’ the enzymes) and work the peeling cream with gentle massage movements into skin, leave on for 5 minutes and then thoroughly rinse away. Nothing makes skin feel cleaner, softer, smoother and brighter than this jar of goodness!! Trust me.“Absolutely the best product on the market. Perfect for all skin types and ages. Truly amazing. Beauty Collective - blush

A complete guide on where and how to apply blush correctly

by Jo Boyden on Oct 28 2022
Ah blush! The one product in your beauty arsenal that can enhance the features on your face while providing skin with a natural warm, rosy glow.I’m personally a huge lover of blush and wear mine daily all year round. It’s the perfect go-to when you’re after a minimal makeup look that’s quick and easy to apply. It also works in perfect unison with bronzer when you want to contour your face or simply create a healthy sun kissed glow. The problem is with the many conflicting tutorials out there, where, and how do you actually apply it? Well, we turned to the experts at Beauty Collective for the low-down. Keep reading for our complete guide on all things blush! Why you should wear blushWhen used correctly, blush can totally transform pale, dull or washed-out skin. It infuses warmth into any complexion by adding a touch of natural, flushed-cheek colour, so your face looks instantly brighter, healthier (and perkier!)Blush is also a great multitasker! This complexion booster not only adds colour to your cheeks but can also double as an eyeshadow (a great way to tie your makeup look together) and if you opt for a brown-toned blusher you can use it to contour your face. That way you get a blush and contour effect in one – a great time-saver!What type of blush should you use?Today’s blushes come in many textures — cream, powder, liquid. As a general rule of thumb, cream is great for dry skin, while powder is the best option for oily skin types, but it’s also a personal preference. Natural makeup works well with creams, but with powder you can be more direct on where you place it, and it tends to last longer too. However, for the best of both worlds we highly recommend baked blush – a pigment packed powder blush! Powders are usually made from lots of pressed powders, but baked powders are actually creams that have been baked slowly in a specialist oven until they are dry. This is what gives baked makeup some of its unique attributes; it has an ultra-soft, velvety texture and provides a sheer wash of soft colour for a naturally flushed complexion. How do you choose the right blush shade?Choosing the right shade can be a little tricky. Firstly, you need to understand your skin’s undertone (whether it’s warm, cool or neutral) then once you know this, choose a shade within your undertone, you can go as light, natural, bright or deep as you want.In general, if you have fair skin opt for light, dusty pinks and sheer peaches. If you want to make a bold statement, you can even give bright pink a go!For medium skin bright pink looks great on a cool undertone while coral and orange bring out warm tones. And if your skin is more on the olive side, anything with a golden undertone will bring out the rich warm tones in your skin. If you’re more of a cool olive, try light plums and cool pinks. How to apply blushHow you apply your blush is just as important as the type and shade you choose. Firstly, you have to select the right tool for application! Opt for a sponge when using creams, a sponge or fingers work fine with liquids and use a brush for powders. If powder blush is for you, you need to choose your brush wisely too! A big soft brush can be very ineffective. Choosing a specific powder blush brush is your best bet as it tends to be on the firmer side so that when you apply the blush to your skin you can control the powder and ensure in spreads correctly and in the right place.Where to apply blushThe ever-popular question of where to apply your blush can have a different answer depending on what you read, or what the trends are, however here at BC we use the general rule of thumb as below; For a natural lookFollow the natural structure of your cheekbones. It’s best to smile and then apply blush to the apples of your cheek and blend towards your temples/ears. This will lift your cheekbones and add a little extra colour to your face without looking over the top.For an instant facelift (and to make your face appear more oval-shaped)Apply blush to the back of your cheekbones into your templesFor a sun kissed glowApply blush underneath your eyes, across the bridge of the nose, and back toward the ear.To shorten your face and create balanceApply blush to the centre of the apples and out, just toward your eyes, avoiding blending too far out toward the temples.Just remember blending is key when it comes to blush application! How can you make your blush last all day?Applying a primer to your skin before makeup application will help keep makeup in place. Also, once you’ve completed your makeup routine, use a facial mist or setting spray such as Pevonia’s Hyaluronic Acid Hydra Mist. Now go yonder and blush away! And experience how incredibly energizing it can be for your complexion!

5 products to best treat dark spots

by Jo Boyden on Sep 22 2022
We might well be lucky to live in a country known for its breathtaking beaches, beautiful bushland and endless summer sun (well the latter could be debatable right now!) but unfortunately growing up in Australia can reap havoc on our skin, and as we age hyperpigmentation can start to form.Otherwise known as dark spots, age spots, sunspots and uneven skin tone, hyperpigmentation is a very common skin condition, especially in warmer climates. Why? Because it is mainly triggered by overexposure to the sun. UV light speeds up the production of melanin, a natural pigment that gives our skin its colour. On skin that has had years of sun exposure, hyperpigmentation appears when melanin becomes clumped or is produced in high concentrations. What’s worse, these dark spots are then typically perceived as ‘aged skin’ and can in turn make you look 10 years older. Eek!The phenomenon affects both men and women and can occur in all skin tones and types. Unfortunately, sun exposure isn’t the only trigger though! Other triggering factors include genetics, pregnancy, the use of photo-sensitizing products, medication, lifestyle choices, acne and scarring and hormonal changes! So, what exactly is the solution? How do we prevent these dark spots from forming? Or if we are already suffering from hyperpigmentation what are the best treatments to get rid of it?While there is no quick fix to eliminate this condition, there are definitely methods you can take to help dark spots fade.Firstly though, wearing sunscreen daily, all year round is essential. Studies have shown that sunscreen by itself will not only help prevent dark spots from forming but can help in preventing the exacerbation of already existing hyperpigmentation.Secondly during the year, especially at the change of season, it’s best to use skincare products that inhibit the overproduction of melanin. Ingredients such as vitamin c will do just this. Finally, look for products specially designed to fade hyperpigmentation. Here are our top 5 product recommendations;Pevonia Vitamin C ComplexeWhile vitamin C has many benefits from boosting collagen to helping heal blemishes, it can also help reduce hyperpigmentation (and give your skin an all-out glow!)Pevonia’s Vitamin C Complexe is formulated with both vitamin C and hydration hero hyaluronic acid that work together to quite literally drench skin with repairing antioxidants, deeply nourishing skin while correcting photo-damage. They help with resurfacing, declogging and brightening skin and can aid in evening out dark areas of the face, neck and chest.Phytomer’s Emergence Even Skin Tone Refining Serum is formulated with all three AHA’s (Glycolic, citric and lactic acids to visibly reduce the appearance of imperfections. The lightweight, refining face serum diminishes the appearance of uneven hyperpigmentation, acne and enlarged pores making skin appear younger and healthier.Medicalia L-Retinol Smoothing CreamAnother go-to ingredient when it comes to fighting hyperpigmentation is retinol. Hailed as the ‘holy grail’ of the skincare world, the super-ingredient works by going deep beneath your skin, encouraging cell turnover and bringing healthier, newer skin cells to the surface!Medicalia’s L-Retinol Smoothing Cream, is not only formulated with stabilized, deeply absorbing retinol (for optimized regeneration) but glycolic and lactic acids too! A must in the fight against hyperpigmentation this resurfacing and lightening cream fades dark spots, whilst rendering skin smoother and brighter with continued use.
