7 self-care rituals to help you and your skin indulge in blissful slumber

by Jo Boyden on Sep 15 2021
The month of September is recognized as Self Care Awareness Month and what better time to practice self-care than now, when so many of us are living through what feels like forever in lockdown! And yes, I hear and echo many of those mum’s (and dad’s!) who are likely thinking self-care? Who has time for that! But self-care can be as simple as getting an extra hour (or minutes even!) of invaluable zzzzz’s! In fact, sleep is probably the most important part of self-care! Why? Because it can improve your mindset, memory, concentration, energy, productivity, and skin too! And we know, no one is choosing to be sleep deprived, the stresses of everyday life can seriously prevent us from getting the amount of sleep we crave, but if it’s possible to try and get our heads down at a reasonable time (I’m talking to myself here too!) and stick to it nightly, it’ll improve your quality of sleep and in turn have a positive impact of your life and complexion too!Below are 7 self-care tips that will help induce sleep as well as seriously benefit your skin. And if they are working for me, I’m pretty sure they’ll work for you too! Get outdoors and get activeSpending time in the great outdoors in nature is paramount to our mental wellbeing, but it is also known to reduce stress, alleviate anxiety, lower blood pressure and induce peaceful sleep! If you aren’t already doing so, or are becoming a wee bit complacent in lockdown, as part of your daily self-care routine, try and force yourself to get that 20 minutes plus of exercise daily and release those feel-good endorphins it induces.Eat your way to sleepWe all know eating too close to bedtime can impact the quality of our sleep but so can the foods we eat! Now is the time to make changes to your daily diet and incorporate the following foods and drinks that are known to have sleep promoting properties!Nuts – such as almonds, are a great source of the hormone melatonin which regulates your internal clock and signals your body to prepare for sleep. They are also an excellent source of magnesium which has the ability to reduce inflammation and stress levels, in turn helping to improve sleep quality, especially in those who suffer from insomnia.Dairy – such as a glass of milk or plain yogurt are known sources of the amino acid tryptophan which increases the production of melatonin. A glass of milk before bed has been proven to improve sleep.Bananas – like milk contain tryptophan, and the fruit itself is a modest source of magnesium.Oatmeal & rice – are high in carbs and fibre and have been reported to induce drowsiness when consumed close to bedtime. Additionally, oats are a known source of melatoninChamomile tea – offers a variety of health benefits! From being rich in antioxidants that help reduce inflammation, to boosting your immunity, reducing anxiety and depression! In addition, this popular tea contains apigenin, an antioxidant that binds to certain receptors in your brain that help promote sleepiness.Indulge in a salt infused bubble bathIf you can’t remember the last time you let yourself enjoy a long soak in the bath free from distraction, then now’s the time to treat yourself to a salts-infused bath. Little instantly promotes relaxation quite like taking a remineralizing bath. Ahhhhhh. Begin by creating a spa-like atmosphere so your entire body is relaxed – I’m talking soothing music, burning essential oils, lighting your favourite candle, whatever it takes to set the mood. Next, fill your bath with Phytomer’s Oligomer Well Being Sensation Essential Minerals Relaxing Bath. This amazing lightly foaming product is enriched with Oligomer – a partially sodium-reduced seawater concentrate that contains all of the remineralizing properties of seawater –to strengthen and restore the skin and release all pent-up tension, helping you drift off into a world of utter relaxation.Create a night-time skincare ritualIt only takes minutes to apply your skincare products before bed but what a difference it will make to your skin! If you want to drift off to peaceful slumber and awake to gorgeous glowy skin these are my personal night-time go-to’s; Phytomer Night Recharge Youth Enhancing Cream - Skin cells do their greatest renewal and repair whist we sleep, so applying much needed hydration at night is encouraged to maximise absorption and to enhance your skin barrier. I personally LOVE Phytomer’s Night Recharge Youth Enhancing Cream and use it religiously because my skin demands that extra layer of rich fluffy moisturiser. The cream literally cocoons my skin in nourishing hydration and really does restore youthful vitality by morning.Pevonia Aromatic Oil – with all the benefits of 4 mood enhancing essential oils – lavender, grapefruit, chamomile and rose, combined with squalane and vitamin e, this soothing and indulgent face oil combats dehydration and dryness while soothing, calming and brightening skin. It also promotes an immediate feeling of increased wellbeing and total relaxation from the moment you apply it! Heaven.Say goodbye to dark undereye circles and bagsIt's not an urban legend — falling short on your zzz's, whether due to insomnia or late nights, can cause circles under your eyes to appear or become more prominent. This happens because lack of sleep tends to cause the blood vessels under the thin skin of the eyes to dilate, creating a dark tint. Not getting enough sleep can also increase stress which too can exacerbate dark circles.Fed up of waking with bulbous bags and black circles under your eyes? Try to get more of the necessary shut-eye, but also apply an eye cream like this beauty before bed and when you wake in the morning;Vie Collection’s Chrono Eyes Puffiness-Dark Circles Wrinkles Cream. Yes, a mouthful to say, but a product that does exactly what it says. It’s a beautifully fine cream enriched with moisturising ingredients to nourish the eye area while reversing puffiness, dark circles, and wrinkles! Seriously! it gives immediate gratification thanks to a pearlescent finish that instantly brightens the eye area and it has definitely calmed my puffiness, lightened my dark circles, and even smoothed my wrinkles! Meditate to clear your mindMeditation is one of the best ways to take care of yourself. I couldn’t imagine not having my nightly 5-minute meditation ritual, which my little one’s love to do before their bedtime too! It’s my way to wind down and calm my mind before bed and has vastly improved my quality of sleep too (because prior to committing to my bedtime meditation I was guilty of sitting staring at a screen until at least 11.30 pm at night and we all know how this can interfere with our circadian rhythm (our natural, internal process that regulates our sleep-wake cycle.)Meditation has a whole heap of benefits from reducing stress and negative emotions to increasing self-awareness, creativity, and patience. So, if you haven’t already and are keen to give it a try, I recommend both the Headspace and Calm apps. They have a range of guided meditations for an array of concerns such as sleep deprivation, anxiety, stress and productivity. It might take you a few goes before you start to relax into it and feel a change but believe me when I stay stick with it as you’ll soon wonder why you didn’t give it a go before now! Play soothing soundsThis one gets me every time! Not only when I go to bed but when I’m putting my kids to bed and pass out too!! In addition to facilitating quickly falling asleep and improving sleep quality, playing relaxing music before bed can improve sleep efficiency, which means more time that you are in bed is actually spent sleeping. Improved sleep efficiency equals more consistent rest and less waking up during the night. Result! Our family favourite is Relaxing Deep Sleep Music on Mindful Kids! Bliss. 8 beauty products to truly treat yourself and your skin this lockdown

by Jo Boyden on Aug 25 2021
Feeling the lockdown blues? No time to treat yourself because #WFH while also #homeschooling? Or simply feeling in a bit of a funk?Time poor many of us might currently be, but surely, we can all make a little time, morning or night, to treat ourselves? During unsettling times it’s so important to look after our mental wellbeing, and one way to do so is by practicing a little self-care. Putting aside as little as even 5-10 minutes to treat yourself with a little pampering can have a profound effect on your mindset and skin of course! So read on as I reveal 8 beauty treats I am personally loving this looong lockdown. I promise that they will make you, like me, feel all the more better. Pevonia Enzymo-Spherides Peeling Cream Something I love to do every few weeks is treat myself to an at-home peel, and I highly recommend you should too because it’ll do wonders for your skin! Do not let the word ‘peel’ put you off though. I naturally have fairly sensitive skin but Pevonia’s Enzymo-Spherides Peeling Cream works wonders for my complexion and is great for all skin types too. It combines natural fruit pineapple and papaya enzymes to eliminate impurities, blackheads, dead cells and toxins and in turn reveals smooth, soft and glowing skin every. Single. Time. For those of us who are extremely time poor, this product is like a mini facial in a jar! Don’t just take my word for it though, read all the fabulous reviews too! De-stress Escape Aromatic Oil If both you and your skin are feeling a little stressed you are going to love this product! With all the benefits of 4 mood enhancing essential oils – lavender, grapefruit, chamomile and rose, combined with squalane and vitamin e, this newly released organic must-have not only reduces dryness and dehydration while soothing, calming and brightening skin, it also promotes an immediate feeling of increased wellbeing and relaxation as soon as you apply it! Vitaminic Concentrate Probably one of my favourite products of all time (yes big call I know), Pevonia’s Vitaminic Concentrate works wonders for my skin. Often dry and devitalised all I need is a dose of this before bed and I wake up to beautifully brighter, rejuvenated skin by morning. I LOVE applying it because both its silky texture and mandarin essential oil aroma are heaven, plus it immediately calms me! What’s more, even though it’s an oil, it's fast-absorbing so you know it’s doing great stuff to your skin! Phytomer Oligomer Well Being Sensation Essential Minerals Relaxing Bath Little instantly reduces stress quite like taking a relaxing remineralizing bath, so I do make sure I find the time at least once a week (after bathing and putting the kids to bed!) to indulge in one myself. I love to create a spa-like atmosphere to really set the mood, by lighting my favourite candles, burning some essential oils, and putting on soothing spa sounds on spotify or youtube! Next, I fill the bath with a de-stressing bath foam or detoxifying salts. After having the luxury of trying many a bath products, I have to say Phytomer’s Oligomer Well Being Sensation Essential Minerals Relaxing Bath is one of my absolute favourites. It’s lightly foaming and enriched with Oligomer – a partially sodium-reduced seawater concentrate that contains all of the remineralizing properties of seawater (yess!) –to strengthen and restore the skin and release all pent-up tension. And that it does. Sound good? It really, really is! Phytomer Oligomer Wellbeing Sensation Moisturising Body Cream It’s easy to neglect our bodies during winter, throw in a lockdown and it’s all out forgotten!Give your body a little loving by introducing Phytomer’s Oligomer Wellbeing Sensation Moisturising Body Cream. Phytomer have worked wonders again in creating this amazing cream and the name speaks for itself! It literally melts into skin for an intensive moisturising experience, bathing skin a therapeutic seaside scent (lush) and its rich, soothing texture treats skin to all the benefits found in OLIGOMER® – a pure seawater concentrate that’s rich in minerals and trace elements. We all know that seawater is good for not only our skin but our soul too, thanks to the multitude of miraculous benefits and a treasure trove of skin-loving ingredients it holds! But let’s face it, we aren’t likely to be taking a dip in the ocean any time soon thanks to the cold weather the majority of us are experiencing right now!! Brrrrr so this product really is the next best thing! Pevonia Micro-Emulsion Massage Oil Anti-Stress Never underestimate the power of massage! And yes I know for many of us a trip to our local spa or salon seems a long way off now, but it is possible to give yourself a little shoulder massage or if you live at home with others try and rope them into doing it for you! My little kids have become pros these last few lockdowns and they absolutely love playing therapist! While it’s not as relaxing or comfortable as I might like! It’s fun for all the family. For a therapeutic back and shoulder massage to alleviate aches and pains at the hands of stress, I highly recommend Pevonia’s Micro Emulsion Massage Oil Anti-Stress. It has a gorgeous aroma, is formulated with nourishing ingredients including Safflower, Geranium, and Orange Oils and it immediately releases pent up tension and fatigue. Bliss. Pevonia Tension Relief Gel If your legs and feet are feeling heavy and fatigued, Pevonia’s Tension Relief Gel is a must. It’s anti-inflammatory, cooling, and uplifting all in one and is amazing for relieving tension and tired, aching muscles and sore feet. Pevonia Limited Edition At Home Facial Kit While many of us might not be able to visit our beloved salon for a facial right now, we can try and put aside half an hour a week for an at-home facial ritual. Pevonia’s limited edition at-home facial kit has all the necessities to deep cleanse, exfoliate, hydrate and pamper your skin, you just need to follow these 5 simple steps on how to perform the facial.

Beauty mistakes to avoid in lockdown

by Jo Boyden on Aug 18 2021
Let’s face it, lockdown has made many of us somewhat sluggish. But while we can’t afford to slack off when it comes to work and home-schooling, we can fall victim to being a little lazy in other areas, namely self-care, like neglecting our skin, and at a time when it needs our care and attention the most! You see looking after our skin isn’t just about looking good, it’s about feeling good too! And sticking to your regular routine might be just what you need to pick yourself up out of a lockdown slump. So save your skin this lockdown and avoid making these 11 common skincare mistakes….and if you are already making them, now you know not to! 1. Skipping your beauty ritual all together…If you think now is the time to let your skin ‘be’ or you are simply using the excuse of lockdown as a means to not have to keep up with your 5-10 minute skincare (and makeup) routine of a morning and evening, you’d be wronging yourself and your skin!We are all aware of the benefits of skincare and how important daily cleansing and moisturising is! After all none of us want dehydrated, dry, dull, spotty skin! Plus keeping up the appearances so to speak isn’t just about looking good it’s about feeling great as well, and following your morning makeover has been proven to improve your mental wellbeing as well as ensuring that your skin stays happy and well-taken care of too!2. ...Or simply overindulging on your skincare routine! If being time poor isn’t something you’re facing right now, and in fact you have too much time on your hands, you might find yourself filling those extra hours at home by indulging your skin. Fantastic yes! But not if you are overindulging it! Your skin can become easily overwhelmed if you use too many products (and active ingredients) at once, resulting in skin irritation, clogged pores and even breakouts! It can then also be confusing as to which product caused the reaction! The general rule of thumb is to try introducing one new skincare product at a time, using it for a week or two before introducing another. If during that time you see no adverse reaction, it’s safe to say your skin is sold and you can start using the next new product. 3. Exfoliating too much or too littleWhether you are prone to acne, currently have a dull, devitalised complexion or suffer from sensitive skin, regular exfoliation is a must. Not only because it will smooth and soften the skin for a brighter complexion but because it helps reduce breakouts by removing excess dead skin cells and keeping pores from becoming clogged. Just make sure you opt for chemical and enzyme exfoliators that contain AHA’s and BHA’s as these will exfoliate skin’s surface as well as deeply penetrate into your pores. We highly recommend Pevonia’s Clarigel Exfoliating Cleanser for blemish prone skin. It combines soapwort, Triclosan, Grapefruit Oil, Salicylic Acid and Citric Acid with Jojoba to gently remove impurities and delivers an intense exfoliating and deep cleansing experience! And if your skin is a little on the sensitive side, just be sure to opt for a super gentle formula – I LOVE Pevonia’s Gentle Exfoliating Cleanser, it gently polishes your skin with its unique creamy, granular texture. But if granules scare you, I also highly recommend Phytomer’s Vegetal Exfoliant with Natural Enzymes. It’s a soft exfoliant for even the most sensitive or rosacea prone skin and uses natural enzymes to encourage cell turnover without scrubbing or irritating your skin.I’m not talking daily exfoliation though! Hell’s no. Just once or twice a week depending on your skin type will suffice, as too much exfoliation can be counterproductive! This is because exfoliators, especially physical ones with granules or beads can damage the outer most layer of your skin. One sign of over exfoliating is skin hypersensitivity. This can cause irritation, breakouts, and even a stinging feeling when you apply products! Aghhh. 4. Not keeping up with your SPFIt’s easy to think why bother with sunscreen if we are in the middle of winter and well you’re not really heading out, right? Wrong! As I’ve preached many a time before, sunscreen isn’t just a summertime skincare product, it’s necessary to religiously wear it All. Year. Round. Why? Because it is THE best protection against skin ageing. Oh and if you are staying indoors, and happen to work next to a window like me, the sun has the ability to penetrate the glass and your skin too! Eek.And then there is the issue of blue light damage. To read all about it click here. But in short, just like the sun, your devices omit harmful ‘blue light’ rays, so it’s important to wear sunscreen to protect skin against them too!!Sunscreens formulated with iron oxides provide enhanced protection against blue light, especially when combined with zinc oxide. A new favourite of mine is Medicalia’s Sunscreen SPF 30 with Blue Light Shield. If you’re a little reluctant to wear your sunscreen because quite frankly its smell and greasy texture puts you off, you are going to love this lightweight emulsion! This everyday sunscreen contains an exclusive mineral formula to shield skin from harmful sun rays, blue light and pollution. It delivers all-natural protection with the addition of zinc oxide which acts to form a protective seal over the skin to reflect blue light away. It also rubs into skin seamlessly without leaving a white cast or greasy residue behind. And even better, the formula is reef-safe and works for all skin types and tones! 5. Constantly touching your faceIf there is one thing covid has taught me, it’s to be vigilant about touch! But then I have to admit I did not realise just HOW often I touched my face before now!! In fact, my husband likes to point out this new (or maybe not so new!) habit I’ve mastered daily - rubbing my hand over my face when I’m tired (which lets face it is pretty much all the time at the moment – eek!) The thing is every time you touch your face, you’re exposing your skin to bacteria, so repeatedly touching it with your fingertips, resting your face on your hands, or simply rubbing your head can introduce dirt directly to the skin and in some cases cause pesky pimples and worse! So, try to be more wary of your actions, and I promise I will too!! 6. Becoming complacent and not cleansing your skin before bedIt’s easy to become complacent in lockdown, don’t I know! And even more so when you are exhausted after the daily juggle of in my case work, home-schooling and just generally parenting two young kiddies 24-7! Sometimes I even find it hard to peel myself off my bed to go and remove my makeup in the evening, but remove my makeup and the days grime I must!Cleansing your face especially at night to remove not only your makeup but any remnants of the day's sweat, dirt and grime is imperative for healthy skin. Not cleansing before bed means your skin is unable to regenerate effectively while you sleep, pores clog, and fatigue (ageing!) signs start to appear. For a fantastic makeup remover which effectively melts away makeup and grime with minimum effort try Phytomer’s Doux Contour Eye and Lip Waterproof Makeup Remover. Combining the effectiveness of an oil (a trio of oils in fact) and the gentleness of a lotion, this ultra-hydrating makeup remover, eradicates even the most stubborn of lips and eye makeup fast! And my absolute favourite cleanser at the moment is Pevonia’s new CleanRefresh Foaming Oil Cleanser. Its oil formulation transforms into a luscious foamy cleanser on application when mixed with water and it leaves skin feeling fantastically refreshed and beautifully clean without the drying effects that other cleansers can leave. Plus its subtle scent is just heavenly. To read more about sleeping in makeup and what it really does to our skin click here. 7. Not washing your makeup brushesIt’s easy to forget about our brushes in lockdown, but using this time to clean them properly will ensure you won’t be using grubby, bacteria-filled tools when lockdowns lifts. After all, our makeup tools are meant to be washed! Besides bacteria, both brushes and sponges also accumulate dead skin cells and oil which can clog your pores leading to skin irritation and pesky pimples! Also if you apply your makeup with a dirty bush the end result can be a streaky and patchy complexion! Clean brushes definitely make for a smoother makeup application and healthier skin! 8. Not cleaning your phoneYour phone is likely your lifeline right now, especially since socialisation is non-existent! But pretty much, like our makeup brushes, our phones collect tons of bacteria throughout the day. That bacteria then transfers to your face every phone call you make (I probably need to start using my hands free more often!) and puts your skin at risk of infections and even acne! Simply wipe off the screen of your phone with alcohol or with wipes to make sure it is constantly clean. 9. Not washing your sheets and pillowcases frequently enoughWe know lockdown can all make us a little lazy, but staying on top of your daily and weekly chores has its purpose that’s for sure! Unfortunately, clogged pores can occur when we don’t wash our bedding weekly. This in turn can lead to blemishes and breakouts. Why? Because there is a build-up of bacteria and oil on our sheets, especially pillowcases caused by sweat, saliva and dead skin cells. Yuck. 10. Eating a bad dietPutting on weight during lockdown because of all the ‘boredom’ food you might be consuming isn’t your only concern when it comes to diet! The effects it has on your skin can be a huge issue too! So instead of reaching for that sugary treat or bag of chips, treat your skin kindly and optimise your nutrition by eating antioxidant-rich fruit and vegetables, healthy fats from oily fish and nuts, and a varied and balanced diet. This should give optimal levels of the nutrients that are crucial for radiant skin, including beta carotene, vitamins C and E and zinc. 11. Not drinking enough waterI’m not sure if it’s just me and being out of routine is a hindrance but I am just not as disciplined with drinking water at home as I was in the office! Maybe it’s because I’m busy with the daily juggle but we all know hydrating yourself throughout the day is a necessity. This is because water helps to get rid of toxins in the body as well as aid in the rehydration of our skin.
Beauty Collective - multi-masking - woman applying mask on her face

6 reasons you should start using a face mask now

by Jo Boyden on Aug 13 2021
If you find yourself somewhat time poor at present (I hear you!) but your skin needs that little extra attention and love, applying a face mask can be the perfect quick fix, and I am here to tell you why. So read on to reveal 6 reasons you should add a weekly mask to your skincare routine, we promise you you’ll love the multitude of benefits and the outstanding results they bring to your skin. They give immediate gratification While with most face masks you’ll need to leave it on for a minimum of 15 minutes, the results are instant and go way beyond the impact of your daily skincare routine! The right face mask can help hydrate skin, remove excess oils, improve the appearance of pores and more and after every application your skin will immerge tightened, toned, softer, smoother, and let’s not forget positively glowing! They are quick and easy to use and can be applied at any time Unlike your daily skincare routine which likely takes place first thing in the morning and then again in the evening, the luxury of a face mask is you can apply it at any time, the application is ever so easy and will only take all of a minute! And while you wait for it to work its magic (which can be anywhere from 15 minutes to overnight) it’s a great excuse for a little “me time” and indulge in a bubble bath, watch your favourite show on Netflix or even continue working if need be! They are pampering and therapeutic While many of us aren’t able to visit our local spa these days thanks to #lockdown, and home-schooling doesn’t allow us much ‘me’ time, a little pamper in the shape of a mask is a great way to not only address our skins needs but also make us feel amazing in little to no time! This is because a face mask can lift your spirit by stimulating your senses and allow you a moment (or few moments should I say!) of indulgent comfort. Ahhhhh. They are deep cleansing Applying face masks offer many physical and therapeutic benefits, but first and foremost masks provide cleansing on a deep deep level, benefiting the skin in multiple ways. Don’t get me wrong daily cleansing is an imperative part of your skincare routine, but applying a mask once or twice a week will take that process to a whole other level by removing any remaining makeup, excess oil, dead skin cells and other impurities on the skin’s surface as well as beneath the upper layers of the epidermis. They help all your other skincare products to better penetrate the skin for optimum results Many of us will be religious when it comes to our daily skincare ritual but if you really want all your products to absorb into your skin both quickly and deeply than a face mask is a necessity. By using a mask regularly, it will assist in enabling all the amazing ingredients from your skincare to penetrate deep into your skin essentially making your products work harder and more effectively than ever before. They are the perfect product for everyone to use no matter how sensitive or reactive your skin might be. This is because there is a mask for every skin type and concern. From dryness to inflammation, redness to acne, whatever your skin type there is the ideal mask to give your skin that instant boost it needs. If your skin is on the sensitive side If your skin tends to be somewhat sensitive, a soothing cream mask enriched with nurturing ingredients is a must. Phytomer’s Accept Comfort Mask not only calms red, irritated skin, it also strengthens it! Healing is faster and it leaves your skin feeling beautifully hydrated, calm and comfortable for days!If your skin is looking a tad lacklustre Vie Collections Phyto-C Mask should be your go-to. Power packed with Vitamin C, exfoliating Papain, marine minerals and more, it’s the mask that makes people ask if you’ve been on holiday recently, wouldn’t we all love that right now! If your skin is currently donning a few too many blemishesPhytomer’s Oligopur Flawless Skin Mask could be your one true savour! This blemish, mattifying cream-foam mask reduces inflammation from breakouts and refines the pores for a mattified even, clear complexion. For dry, dehydrated skin, you need a deeply hydrating mask, like Phytomer’s Hydrasea Thirst-Relief Rehydrating Mask. It feeds the skin with ultimate nourishment so you can literally feel your complexion tighten and plump in nearly an instant. The end result is youthfully restored skin. If you’re concerned about skin fatigue and visible signs of agingTry Pevonia’s Ageless Skin Collagen Mask – my personal favourite! it instils skin with collagen polypeptides, Vitamin A, Green Tea and Mandarin Orange Extract to repair fine lines and wrinkles, encourage healthy cell turn over and effectively increase your skin’s overall radiance. If your skin is in need of a detoxPevonia’s Pure Skin Charcoal Mask is the perfect antidote for congested, dull skin. It rids skin of toxins, draws out impurities and debris, neutralises pollutants, and leaves skin gloriously glowy. And if you want to address more than one skin issue you can use multiple masks, applying them to the different zones of your face for outstanding results every time.

Beauty Collective - Moods

Skin care that affects your mood!

by Jo Boyden on Jul 07 2021
It is not new, and has been part and parcel of natural and holistic skincare for centuries. It is of course Essential Oils, the medicinal properties of plants that make natural skin care products more than just plant fodder. From the luxurious skin-softening properties of the Rose (used famously by Cleopatra to maintain her beauty) to the wound-cleansing benefits of Myrrh (used by ancient Roman soldiers going into battle), these potent oils harness a wide range of botanical therapeutics to address both our skin care AND our mood! There are now approximately 2000 known plant species in the world which contribute to different essential oils! Amazing right? And the importance of essential oils in cosmetics and skincare relate to their diverse benefits.Unlike synthetics, the impact of an essential oil can be huge! Since they have the ability to relax our senses, uplift our spirits and support our physical and psychological well-being for a truly holistic sense of wellness. Another feature that lends these all-natural oils to enhanced skincare is that they are absorbed easily through the skin, thereby being very receptive to simple topical remedies and applications. Sold yet? Keep reading! How do they affect our state of mind?In aromatherapy, inhaling essential oils is thought to transmit messages to a brain region involved in controlling emotions. Known as the limbic system, this brain region also influences the nervous system. Aromatherapy proponents suggest that essential oils may affect several biological factors, Including: Heart rate, stress levels, blood pressure, our breathing rate, and our immune function. 4 Essential Oils with some serious skin benefits; Lavender Oil (Lavandula angustifolia)For your mood: Deeply relaxing, soothing, and upliftingFor your skin: Also known as 'True Lavender', this species produces the most recognized Lavender aroma. It is also the species most celebrated by aromatherapists and researchers and is considered to be highly therapeutic. Topically it supports skin rejuvenation and is known to help heal scars, burns, insect bites, and inflammation. Grapefruit OilFor your mood: Uplifting, reduces stress, stimulates circulation, increases energyFor your skin: Extracted from the peel of the fruit, grapefruit peel oil contains naturally occurring alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) that help promote smoother, younger looking skin by increasing the rate of cell renewal. It also has astringent and tightening properties that relieve congestion and limit excess sebum (oil). Because of the potent antibacterial and antimicrobial effects, it's the perfect ingredient to treat and protect breakout-prone skin. Chamomile OilFor your mood: Deep relaxation, a natural sleep aid, anti-anxietyFor your skin: Chamomile extract is reputed to help manage feelings of discomfort from inflammation and irritation. For this reason, it is a common ingredient in products that address a variety of skin conditions, including eczema, dermatitis, dryness, soreness, and itchiness. It is also valued for its cleansing and moisturizing properties and is often added to soften and brighten the skin and hair, to help balance oily skin, and to help manage the appearance of blemishes and acne. Finally, this multi-purpose oil is also rejuvenating, helping to reduce the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and scars due to a rich concentration of phytochemicals and polyphenols. Rose OilFor your mood: Calms and Soothes, anti-anxiety, anti-depressantFor your skin: Rose Oil visibly helps refine your skin’s texture, which aids in age-management and dry skin. The therapeutic compounds present in the oil also help control many skin conditions such as dermatitis and psoriasis. Bonus: the antioxidants in Rose Oil will absorb deeply into the dermis layer of the skin, which is especially beneficial for mature skin. It has anti-inflammatory, cooling and soothing properties which can help with stress-related conditions in more mature skin types. It is also excellent for treating broken capillaries and scarring to help skin tone appear more even. And now, all the benefits of these four essential oils have been combined with Safflower Oil, Squalane and Vitamin E to create Pevonia’s NEW De-Stress Escape Aromatic Oil!This multi-tasking wonder oil not only effectively reduces skin dryness and dehydration while soothing, calming and brightening the skin, it also promotes an unequalled feeling of increased wellbeing and utter relaxation as soon as you apply it! Heaven in a bottle.

Beauty Collective - Wellness Rituals

The wellness rituals you should be doing daily

by Jo Boyden on Dec 22 2020
A stressful, hectic life is routine in my household this time of year, as I’m sure it is for many! Throw a pandemic into the mix and a growing number of covid cases in some states and the anxiety levels will be arising. So with the holiday season nearly upon us and the potential of another lockdown looming for some, post-Christmas will definitely be time to decompress and get a little self-loving back into our lives. From the importance of establishing a good skincare routine to the impact exercise can have on our mental health, these self-care rituals should be something we all adopt daily; Give yourself a facial My morning and night-time skincare routine is something I have (for as long as I can remember anyway!) always taken pleasure in, even when I’m time poor, which let's face it with young kids and now a puppy thrown in for good measure is….always! It should be a daily routine we all enjoy with all the benefits skincare brings, and incorporating a little facial ritual (which is easy to do) will really help nurture both your skin and psych. For a detailed account on how to perfect a salon-style wellbeing facial at home click here. Meditate for better quality of sleep I love company, would tout myself as a social butterfly and am seldom alone, but I do ensure for my mental wellbeing that I have at least 5 minutes a day to myself because the rest of the time it’s go, go, go! I love a bubble bath (we’ll get to that later!) but I couldn’t imagine not having my nightly 5-minute meditation ritual, which my little ones are now doing before their bedtime too! So if you haven’t already and are keen to give it a try, I recommend both the Headspace and Calm apps. They have a range of guided meditations for an array of concerns such as sleep deprivation, anxiety, stress and productivity. It might take you a few goes before you start to relax into it and feel a change, but believe me when I stay stick with it as you’ll soon wonder why you didn’t give it a go before now! Practice calming techniques Aside from meditation, practicing other calming techniques can be highly beneficial to both your psych and skin too! This is because stress, while bad of course for your health, is not good for your skin either! Unfortunately, cortisol (the stress hormone) has the ability to break down collagen in the skin resulting in premature ageing (great!) But practicing, for example yoga, or even putting on some soothing sounds can have a significant impact on reducing that cortisol flow! Phew. Indulge in a therapeutic bath So when I said I ensure I give myself 5 minutes of alone time a day for my night-time meditation ritual, I also try and give myself 15 minutes once or twice a week (daily is amazing if you have the time!) to indulge in a therapeutic bath. Little instantly reduces stress quite like sinking into a relaxing, remineralizing bath. Add the soothing sounds of spa music, a candle here and there, and a destressing bath foam or detoxifying salts and you’ve got yourself an at-home spa experience. I am loving Phytomer’s Oligomer Well Being Sensation Essential Minerals Relaxing Bath. It’s a lightly foaming, ultra-relaxing fragranced bath enriched with Oligomer – a partially sodium reduced seawater concentrate that contains all of the remineralizing properties of seawater – to strengthen and restore the skin while releasing all pent-up tension in the body. Amazing stuff right? Stay active Just 30 minutes of exercise a day can make a huge difference to not only our mental well-being, but our body and skin too! And no you don’t need to take up F45 or swim the ocean blue, just a moderate walk can be all you need. Daily exercise has been proven to help control weight, reduce risk of heart diseases, help our body manage blood sugar and insulin levels, decrease pain, and even delay the ageing of our cells! Exercise can also help increase oxygen and blood flow to the skin neutralizing the free radicals that damage it! And we all know exercising releases endorphins, the happy hormones! And who doesn’t want to feel pleasure, happiness and love on the daily! Have a little, or a whole lot less screen time This one’s not so much a ritual, more a necessity if we’re talking self-care and want to truly unwind this impending holiday season.Sadly, screen time (thanks to the blue light it emits) has an adverse effect on our skin, body and mind, and what with the multiple devices available at our fingertips, I’d say there was barely one of us who wasn’t guilty of spending too much time glued to one of them at some point in the day. Spending just two consecutive hours on a digital device can cause eyestrain or fatigue, while overexposure to this blue light also suppresses the release of melatonin, the hormone that regulates sleep, therefore disrupting our normal sleep pattern. And we all know poor sleep can lead to premature ageing. Eek.Use this opportunity to read a good book and perhaps discover a passion perhaps you didn’t know you had! Give yourself a mini massage! And finally..try and incorporate a mini massage into your daily life. Yes, yes I might be asking a bit much you say but I’m talking anything from a relaxing hand or foot massage which we can do ourselves in next to no time, to a back or shoulder massage if you have a willing family member or even a handheld massage machine! A massage no matter how big or small can elevate aches and pains, reduce tension, and evoke relaxation and calm. For an indulgent hand massage which we can easily do ourselves (and lets face it with all the hand sanitizer drying out our skin at the moment, applying hand cream has become a bit of a necessity) my hand cream of choice is Phytomer’s Oleocreme Ultra-Nourishing Hand Cream, the name says it all. I love to follow this with a spritz of my Pevonia Dry Oil Body Moisturiser. It’s one of Pevonia’s global best-sellers and for good reason! It literally revitalizes and nourishes every inch of skin with a combination of lavender, chamomile, and squalene. When my feet are feeling fatigued Pevonia’s Tension Relief Gel is my go-to and if my legs are sore and achy massaging Phytomer’s Cryotonic Soothing Leg Gel is a must! So go on, give these a go and reap the rewards.
Beauty Collective - gemstone rollers

What’s the deal with gemstone facial rollers? Understanding the benefits

by Jo Boyden on Dec 17 2020
In 2018 “jade rollers” became all the rage in the world of beauty, beloved by beauty bloggers and skincare experts alike. Fast forward a few years and a few developments and the latest trend to take centre stage is “gemstone rollers”, an array of facial rollers made of semi-precious stones including; amethyst, obsidian, rose quartz, jade and more. But what exactly is the benefit of these rollers? And will they really make a difference to your skin? The answer is yes and we are here to tell you how and why.Often touted as an “anti-aging tool, gemstone rollers offer a multitude of benefits which ultimately results in better skin when used regularly and correctly. Not only do they feel amazing on your face, but by rolling them across your cheeks, chin and forehead, you’ll slowly open up pathways, improving lymphatic flow, clearing toxins, decreasing puffiness, stimulating collagen production, reducing fine lines and more! They even have the ability to release tension which many people carry in their jaws!Adding a gemstone roller to your daily skincare routine will become your most soothing self-care ritual (you’ll be amazed at how calming it can make you feel) but sadly there is no one size fits all. Just as with crystals, each roller has its own specific advantages, so you need to look at the individual properties of the gemstone and go for the one(s) which calls to you the most! Jade Facial Roller Best for toning and defining skin Ideal for those concerned with wrinkles and loose skin, jade helps raise the immunity of the skin. It’s known for its ability to help tone and firm skin cells, stimulate collagen production, increase elasticity, calm puffiness and promote cell turn over! Physically, this crystal has more resistance on skin than rose quartz and amethyst, so while it’s not as silky and glass-like in texture, it is better for achieving firming and lifting results including smoothing wrinkles, sculpting muscle, and tightening loose skin. It’s best to use this roller in the morning since jade has a revitalising energy that helps skin to feel fresh and invigorated. Jade Facial Smooth and Textured Roller Best for toning, defining and rejuvenating skin Just as with its counterpart this roller is best for those wishing to tone and firm their skin. The two different roller ends pose their own benefits. The smooth end helps to aid in lymphatic drainage and reduce puffiness, while the textured end stimulates the blood circulation and helps increase oxygen in the skin cells and collagen in the dermis. Again, this roller is best used in the morning, since it has a revitalising energy that helps skin to feel fresh and invigorated. Rose Quartz Facial Roller Best for soothing and calming skin The ultimate beauty stone, known as the “crystal of Venus” (the goddess of love and beauty), Rose Quartz delivers inner healing and clears complexity. This ‘emotional healer’ is great for reducing and releasing impurities and stress in the skin. It’s best for detoxifying while soothing and calming sensitive skin. But also has great properties that increase circulation to the skin, promoting collagen production. Rose quartz also happens to have inherent minerals- silicium, magnesium, iron, sodium and oxygen - that skin can topically borrow and benefit from when rolling and thanks to the stone staying very cool it is ideal for those suffering from a sensitive or inflamed complexion.Obsidian Facial Roller Best for detoxifying and balancing skin Unlike the other stones, Black Obsidian naturally retains warmth and is great to use on congested, blemish prone skin. With consistent use it brings imbalances to the surface so that they can be released, this is because the warmth of the obsidian encourages stimulation of the lymphatic system and circulation. The Obsidian Facial Roller also helps to tighten pore and balance your skin tone and leaves skin feeling purified and refreshed. To warm our Black Obsidian Roller, we recommend placing it in a glass of warm water for a minute or two before use. Amethyst Facial Roller Best for purifying blemish-prone skin Amethysts are powerful and protective stones that have the ability to soothe away day-to-day stresses. They emit infrared rays which slightly raises skin temperature increasing circulation. This enables the body to produce cortisol which calms inflammation and redness and nourishes skin cells with oxygen and nutrients to keep them healthy and encourage regeneration. Thanks to its negative-charge, amethyst also draws out positively charged toxins and free radicals to cleanse and detoxify skin. These detoxifying powers mean that amethyst helps to prevent bacteria growth and tighten pores, so is recommended for blemish-prone skin. Now you’ve selected the gemstone roller or rollers that sound right for your skin's needs but how exactly do you use it now and how often? We recommend cleansing your skin first, then applying a small amount of a light oil or serum with the roller. Starting at the chin, use broad, long strokes horizontally to the hairline - you should apply slight pressure but not so that it is "pulling" your skin. Then, from the nose, gently roll towards the ear - smoothing the skin under the eyes. Moving up, use the small end of the roller around the corner of the eye, rolling to the temples. Last up, place the roller above the eyebrow and push up towards the hairline. You can also finish by rolling horizontally from the middle of the forehead out towards the temples. For optimum results, you can use a roller everyday, but we would recommend using it after cleansing your face and neck. You can actually use it up to twice a day, but one should be plenty. If there is however a day where you feel like your skin is especially puffy, then morning and evening should work wonders! Finally, you need to remember to regularly clean your roller since it’s a facial tool and can easily spread bacteria. Ideally, it’s best to clean them with warm water and soap as you would any other beauty tool, pat try and then store in a clean, dry place. But for a more spiritual clean, you can wash the roller in salt water. Salt is considered cleansing and will help draw negative energies out of the roller so they don’t transfer back to your skin.

Spring ready? 5 body prep tips for the sunny season

Spring is finally here! Hallelujah! But the change of season does mean it's time to get our bodies prepped for the warmer months ahead as it's away with the heavy jumpers and long trousers and out with the skirts, shorts, and swimmers!During the winter months many of us I'm sure have been guilty of neglecting our bodies just a little which includes not buffing, exfoliating or moisturising sufficiently. After all, we've been covered from head to toe for many months now, so skin texture is likely on the dry, scaley, and what's for lack of a better word – lumpy side! Yes, that smooth, supple skin we once donned, may be a thing of the past but with a few key products and a little love, we can have it back to its former glory in next to no time. So read on to find out what steps you need to take to perfect your body, and the products that really will work for you this season. Try dry body brushing Ever tried dry body brushing? I'm a firm believer in it! But, in order to notice its impact on your skin, you need to do it daily. Regular body brushing stimulates blood flow and circulation and helps the body detoxify itself. As a result, it helps to tighten the skin and reduce cellulite! Give it a whirl before you have a shower or bath by simply brushing your body in upward movements towards your heart. Give your skin a perfecting polish Yes, it's time to get your buffing cloth out, load it with a healthy dose of body scrub, and give your body a much needed and well-deserved skin polish! After all, a good old fashioned scrub is your ticket to smooth, spring skin.Apply your scrub to wet skin (use warm water) and gently massage all over the body in a circular motion. Then rinse and clean thoroughly with gentle shower gel. By exfoliating the skin it will eliminate any dead skin cells as well as dry flakey skin, making way for silky smooth skin.I've personally tried many a body scrub in my time but can not go past Pevonia's Silky Skin Body Scrub. I'm not lying when I say after just one application my skin is so silky soft and smooth. Moisturise daily Using a good body moisturiser, lotion on dry oil can help heal dry skin as well as protect it from seasonal factors. Applying your body cream after your shower or bath is the best time as your skin is still moist and the product is able to trap some of that water still on your body and use it to further hydrate your skin. Hands down my favourite body moisturiser (and a global best seller!) is Pevonia's Dry Oil Body Moisturiser. It literally feels like silk on application, is not greasy at all (despite it being an 'oil') and absorbs immediately, quite literally nourishing every inch of your body. Formulated with Lavender and Chamomile the scent it heaven and it renders skin soft, supple with a healthy glow. This product does not disappoint, and the reviews speak for themselves. If you are however more of a cream lover, I also highly recommend for spring Phytomer's Oleocreme Ultra-moisturising Body Milk, its an ideal combination of the comfort of a cream and the lightness of a body milk, and its “anti-thirst” formula means it is super hydrating but not too rich! Plus it absorbs very quickly making way for smooth, visibly plumped skin. Slather on the anti-cellulite cream Truth be told while there is no ‘quick fix’ when it comes to cellulite, if you are armed with a good topical anti-cellulite treatment and are vigilant about its daily application, you can significantly reduce your cellulite’s appearance. After trialing many anti-cellulite creams in my time, my firm favourite is definitely Phytomer's Resurfaslim Peel and Slim Cream, and for good reason. It took me about 10 days of religious application morning and night, to notice a real change in my skin. By 4 weeks I felt slimmer, and my cellulite had definitely reduced! Especially the appearance of dimpling around my upper thighs! I have my next bottle at the ready and can't wait to see the results in a month's time! Get your glow on If you've neglected to exfoliate, moisturise and buff your body over the winter months I'm betting that your skin hasn't had a tan for a while either. With the pins making an appearance once again it's time to get your glow on with a good self-tanner! Just be sure to steer clear of spray and mousse self-tans though as these can be slightly drying for the skin. Instead, try a nourishing self-tanning cream. It will not only create that natural spring glow but also nourish your dry post-winter skin.Try Phytomer's Sun Radiance Self Tanning Cream, it's white satin texture makes it so easy to apply without leaving any streaks, it quickly absorbs into the skin and within a few hours, you'll have the most perfect long-lasting natural tan! I promise!Follow these steps and you'll well and truly be beach body ready!

Stretchmarks: Why we get them and how to prevent or fade them

by Jo Boyden on Aug 03 2020
We’ve all heard of the dreaded stretch marks! Whether they started to appear during adolescent growth spurts or they pop up throughout pregnancy, the majority of us ladies will fall victim to these scars at some stage in life! Whether you embrace them or dislike them greatly, stretch marks are very normal! But why do we get them? And what can we do to prevent or reduce them?Stretch marks develop when our skin quite literally stretches (or shrinks!) at a rapid pace, causing the collagen and elastin (which our bodies naturally produce) in the dermis, to tear or ‘rupture’. As it heals we are left with a scar known as a stretch mark. Unfortunately, while there is no way to permanently get rid of these marks, there are effective treatments you can use to either help prevent them from appearing in the first place or to soften the severity of pre-existing marks. The first thing you need to know when choosing the treatment are its ingredients. Similar to skincare, there are a number of key ingredients to look out for, which will help improve or reduce the appearance of stretch marks; Hyaluronic Acid (which plumps the lines), retinol (which resurfaces and strengthens the skin) and elastin. When I found out I was pregnant I have to admit I did worry about the toll it would take on my body, namely stretch marks, so I got to moisturising both my stomach and thighs religiously every day, morning and night. I tried a few different creams as recommended by close friends and professionals alike, but the one cream that became my firm favourite was the Medicalia Stretchmark Guard Cream. I really liked its light and non-greasy texture, yet loved how it felt deeply nourishing. It’s formulated with Retinyl Palmitate, which is effective in boosting collagen fibre production in your skin – yes please we could all do with as much collagen as possible as we age!), Marine Elastin, Hyaluronic Acid, and Vitamin E! It’s 100% safe to use in pregnancy and I can honestly say I am a testament that this stuff really does work! Having been prone to a few stretch marks in my time, especially when I was younger and went through growth spurts, I thought it was a given I’d get at least a few more, even if I stuck with my vigilant body care routine! But not one stretchmark formed on my stomach! For me, it’s the best product to prevent stretch marks but it’s also a game-changer when it comes to helping heal them once they’ve formed too! With regards to the technicalities, Medicalia’s Stretchmark Guard Cream effectively prevents stretchmark formation while smoothing pre-exisiting marks as well as other skin damage! It renews skin cells and boosts hydration for levels of stronger, smoother and suppler skin. All hail Medicalia’s Stretchmark Guard cream I say!

Fun for all the family: 6 simple steps to the perfect at-home manicure

by Jo Boyden on May 07 2020
Who doesn’t love a manicure? Half an hour, to an hour of ‘you’ time to be pampered and preened, and at the end, you come away with fabulous looking fingertips! Sadly though, with social distancing still in place, that frequent visit to your nail salon isn’t an option for now, but it does make for the perfect time to master your DIY manicure skills!At-home manicures can still be a relaxing activity, as well as a lot of fun if you get your kids or whoever you might live with, involved. While you may not be able to give yourself or each other a gel manicure or a professional shellac, (best to leave those to the professionals) you can still try and recreate a full nail salon experience at home, it just takes a few simple steps and the right products.Read on for our step by step on how to perfect an at-home manicure;Step 1 - Remove old polishIf your nails are baring the remanence of regular polish, you simply need to remove it with a good polish remover, but if you’ve been sporting a gel or shellac manicure for some weeks now, a little more effort is involved – but still easy to do! Simply use a fine-grit nail file and very gently file the top coat of the gel, next pour some pure acetone into a bowl, and soak nails for three to five minutes. Finally use a birchwood stick or similar to gently remove the remaining gel. Alternatively, you can soak some gauze in acetone, apply to fingertips and wrap in aluminum foil for 15 minutes.Step 2 - Determine the best nail shape for youWhile there is no wrong nail shape so to speak, there are a couple of rules of thumb which you should follow when deciphering which nail shape would be best for you.If you like maintaining longer nails, it’s best to opt for an oval shape as this way your nails are less likely to snag. Oval nails also tend to be the most flattering as they create the illusion of slimmer, longer fingers no matter their size or shape. A more square shape tends to work best for short, neat nails, but just be aware that this can be the hardest nail shape to wear too, as it can make your hands appear stumpy! So your other option for short nails (even nail biters!) is rounded. It’s a simple shape, extending only slightly past your nail bed and in line with maintaining your nail’s natural shape.Step 3 – Trim, file and buff your nailsOnce you’ve decided on your perfect shape it’s time to get filing! If your nails are really long and you are vibing shorter nails this time around, it’s best to trim them slightly with nail clippers.See-sawing back and forth with your file can actually weaken the nail and cause it to split and/or peel. Instead file from the outer edges of your nail toward the center in one direction. Just make sure you use a good quality file. Finally, buff the tops and sides of your nails with a nail buffer. This is an important step as it’ll help create a smoother surface for polish application but it’ll also prevent the build-up of natural oils on your nails.Step 4 – Exfoliate your handsExfoliate hands, wrists, and forearms with a scrub that eliminates dead skin cells while replenishing moisture. I love Pevonia’s Silky Skin Scrub. Its creamy formula gently polishes away dead skin cells and impurities with jojoba beads, rosemary, sage, and allantoin. Unveiling smooth, radiant, and silky-soft skin. Heavenly.Step 5 – It’s time for some hand pampering! All hail the hand massage! – just because you’re not in the spa or at your favourite nail salon doesn’t mean you can’t be pampered for a minute or two or three! Even when my four year old daughter has a go at this step it’s honestly a little luxury, and she loves playing beauty therapist! Research has also proven that a hand massage can not only increase hand strength and elevate any aches and pains but also reduce feelings of stress and anxiety! Now first things first you want to indulge your hands and nails in the spa treat they deserve so choose wisely! I highly recommend Phytomer’s Oleocreme Ultra-Nourishing Hand Cream. Enriched with a blend of skin-loving ingredients, this luxurious treatment soothes, softens, and deeply nourishes hands. Also unlike many other hand creams, it absorbs super-fast to instantly condition hands and nails without leaving them sticky and slimy. To start your massage gently stroke your hand (or the hand of your mani-partner) to relax and warm it. Now take your cream and gently rub it between your hands to warm it up a bit, then start by rubbing it into your arm with long smooth motions from wrist to elbow, this is to warm up the muscles. Next, use your thumb to lightly rub the back of your wrist and hand applying moderate pressure as your thumb nears the wrist. Now move onto your fingers taking time to massage each finger individually. Give each finger a gentle twist in alternating direction then give a quick but not too firm full to finish. Repeat this for each finger and your thumbs. When you have finished focusing on each finger turn your hand over. Use your thumbs to apply pressure to your palm. Then interlock your fingers and slowly rotate your hands. Alternate directions and stretch it out. Finally, cup your hand around your forearm and gently move it all the way down the arm from the elbow to fingertips applying a little pressure.Once your pampering is complete, give each nail a quick swipe with nail polish remover to get rid of any oily residue.Step 6 – Apply your polishNow for the fun part! It’s time to polish!Firstly, it is important to invest in a polish that is not only long-lasting but healthy for your nails too. Look for “5-free” options which means it’s DBP, Toluene, Formaldehyde, Formaldehyde Resin, and Camphor free. ELES Cosmetics nail polishes are made with the best of Australian quality ingredients and have a 5-free professional patented formula which holds its colour and shine for days. They don’t require a base coat but you can still opt to apply one first if you wish. Now select your colour of choice – my forever favourite is the ELES Cosmetics Nail Polish in Alice in Wonderland, while my daughter is currently loving Some Like it Hot! On application be sure not to overload the brush with polish (you need just enough to cover the nail in one coat). Brush from cuticle to nail tip in as few strokes as possible, preferably three times only – one stroke down the middle of your nail, one on each side. For seamless coverage it’s best to apply two coats, however the longer you can wait between coats, the better. You can complete your manicure by applying a topcoat if you wish, this can protect your manicure and add a little extra shine.

7 ways makeup can actually improve your mental wellbeing

by Jo Boyden on Apr 29 2020
While it might have been tempting to forego makeup altogether since #isolife and hey it’s the perfect time to give your skin a break, right? There is no denying the impact makeup can actually have on your wellbeing. When it comes to wearing cosmetics, the benefits go way beyond looks and we are here to explain how;1 It can transform your mood and mindsetIf you’re one of the many currently working from home whilst home-schooling your kids, I’m feeling you. The daily juggle is real and the idea of any time to yourself is almost laughable, but practising self-care at home is imperative, as is maintaining routines where possible!A simple beauty regimen can be so beneficial for those who have a hard time implementing or prioritizing self-care. Setting aside some time and energy for daily makeup application – and we aren’t talking hours, it can be as little as 5-10 minutes – can have a profound effect on your mindset. Taking time out to pop on a little mascara, foundation, concealer and blush even, can help your skin look it’s very best but also greatly elevate your spirits. I personally find getting up in the morning and following the same routine I would if I was still going into the office, is a great motivator! By making myself look presentable I feel better, brighter and so much more productive!2 It can be therapeuticI don’t know about you but those 10 minutes to myself when I can forget about the daily grind or the outside world, and instead just focus on creating my mini makeover, is actually bliss, therapeutic almost. I unfortunately no longer have time for swimming and at-home yoga sessions are few and far between, so my morning makeup routine has become my little self-soothing ritual, especially when the kids have been driving me a wee bit crazy since 7am!3 It can bring out your inner artistYour makeup routine can provide a creative outlet. Whether you’re feeling the minimal makeup vibe or channelling your inner Lady Gaga, with makeup you can be as artistic as you like, no limitations. It can also be a great way to explore different makeup trends and find out which looks work best for you! Nothing like taking this time in isolation to perfect your look for that dinner date or girls night out once lives return to normality.4 It can be fun!Makeup isn’t all about looking presentable, it can be so much fun too! You can play with colours to create looks you never thought possible and for me the only people to judge at the moment are my little minions! Who happen to think any look I don is fab! Phew!Plus if like me your kids find makeup fascinating and are old enough, why not make it into something fun you can share with them too? With kids home 24/7 it’s the perfect time to engage them in makeup play. It provides them with an alternative option to drawing, painting, and doing craft and the looks they create themselves will, in turn, create fun memories forever, I have the photos to prove it!5 It can boost your confidenceIt is fact that wearing makeup can help you cultivate a more polished or even ‘perfected’ version of yourself…so to speak. Concealing any imperfections can increase confidence as well as make you feel more in control of yourself and your skin. And this boost of confidence, in turn, is known to increase productivity. Win Win I say!6 It can improve your skinSay what? Wearing makeup can actually improve your skin? I hear you say. I know this might sound a little ridiculous after all doesn’t the majority of makeup clog your skin? Prevent it from breathing properly? Not if you are using the right makeup products, no!Spending so much time at home in quarantine can have a negative effect on your skin, deplete it of certain essential nutrients and minerals. And while skincare care vastly improve your skin’s appearance, so can your makeup if you opt for formulations with skin nurturing ingredients. By choosing mineral foundations and powers rich in vitamins A, C and E, as well as ginkgo biloba, ginseng, aloe and chamomile, will not only provide your skin with antioxidant protection but also soothe, protect and correct your complexion too! I personally LOVE the ELES Cosmetics best-selling Liquid Powder Mineral Foundation for these exact reasons! The coverage is perfect – silky smooth with a matte finish, creating a totally natural flawless complexion, while also protecting and correcting my skin! Also makeup – anything from your lipstick to your highlighter – can be one of the most efficient anti-ageing measures as they offer additional protection for your skin against the sun’s rays and pollution! It’s easy to forget about applying sunscreen to our lips or around our delicate eye area, I know I’m guilty of this! So pigmented eyeshadows and long-lasting lipsticks can actually help with this. The ELES Moisture Crème Lipstick has an instantly nourishing formula, offers both rich colour and long-lasting wear and it deeply conditions lips with vitamins E, A, C, shea butter, avocado and jojoba oils! I can’t get enough of the Nutmeg shade, I have very pale lips so this adds the perfect sheen of much needed colour!7 It can increase longevityPractising self-care such as makeup application comes with both short and long-term health benefits. Makeup routines we now know can raise your mood helping you both behave and think differently. And due to numerous studies it is proven that people with a more positive attitude quite simply live longer!

FORCED STAYCATION - IT'S TIME TO “KONMARI” YOUR MAKEUP

by Jo Boyden on Apr 17 2020
When was the last time you sorted through your makeup? I mean organised, dusted and decluttered it? Whether it be the selection of products currently sitting on your bathroom vanity or the hoards you’ve accumulated over the years that no longer sees the light of day, by ‘tidying’ your makeup you will also ‘tidy your mindset’, according to globally renowned ‘organising consultant’ (aka ‘tidying expert’) and bestselling author, Marie Kondo.Back in her late teens Marie Kondo created the ‘KonMari’ method, a philosophy which suggests we should all “keep things that speak to the heart and discard items that no longer spark joy.” And now this method has been adopted by people all around the world, transforming their cluttered homes into spaces of serenity and inspiration! Sold? Read on…Having worked in the cosmetics industry for many years, I have been blessed to not only trial but be gifted with countless products and if I hadn’t have adopted Marie Kondo’s KonMari method myself, I’d have been signed up for the TV show “Hoarders” by now!So if you are one for acquiring a mountain of makeup products, many of which you no longer use but can’t bring yourself to throw them away, now is the perfect time for change! Here are some decluttering Marie Kondo mantras to live your new life by; Commit to sorting ALL your makeup This isn’t a onetime thing but a process that will allow you to enjoy your makeup routine in a whole new way so you need to be committed to tackling the entire task at hand in one go, no matter how tedious a job it is! Unless you apply yourself from start to finish in one fell swoop, you’ll just end up shifting your makeup from one spot to another, accomplishing nothing. I promise once you’ve decluttered all your makeup hoards and completed the organising process you will be motivated to keep it that way! Create a mountain Now you are committed you still need to ensure you don’t just tidy one drawer or bag of makeup at a time if you do it that way you’ll lose both momentum and motivation! Instead, grab every single item of makeup whether on display or hidden in the deep depths of your cupboard and put into one large pile. This way you can really see what you have been clutching onto for all those months, years even! Sort by category It’s time to dive right into the mountain of makeup and organise by category (I found this part rather therapeutic!) The KonMari ‘tidy your home’ method has people starting with the clothing category and then sorting into subcategories such as shirts, skirts etc…this exact same method can be applied to organising your makeup. So put your many lippies into one pile, your mascaras into another and so on… Out with the old, in with the new Once you have categorised your masses of makeup it’s time to discard the products that are old, expired or even those that are unused, or “that no longer give you joy” as Marie Kondo states. So many of us (I really was a sucker for this) tend to cling onto so many material things ‘just in case’ we might need them again. It’s important to be realistic and ask yourself the question “when did I last use this?” if you can’t remember it’s time to toss it!Products such as foundation and concealer will typically last a few years (although once opened beware of bacteria build-up) but products like mascara have a much lesser shelf life so if you haven’t used it for a few months it’s likely time to replace it!By cutting down your collection you will create room for inevitable growth, after all who doesn’t want to get their hands on that new product launch! Just remember though some makeup, while it looks fabulous in the palette, might not look so great on your complexion. Have a little fun, do a little experimenting and choose to keep only the products while make you feel and look your best. Decipher which products bring you joy Now that you’ve eliminated the old and unusable, take those remaining red lipsticks, that shadow palette, your powder blush, in your hand and ask yourself if it sparks joy! If the answer is not really then simply say a Marie Kondo “thank you for your service” mantra and add it to the ‘see you later’ pile. This exercise not only cleans out your beauty bag, drawer or cupboard, it also instills decision-making skills that’ll transfer into other areas of your life. But remember by ‘sparking joy’ we mean how it makes you feel when you wear it, not that when you last wore your sparkly lip gloss at the 2018 Christmas party you had a fun night! Don’t forget your tools! Aside from your makeup products, it’s important to sort through your tools too!Your makeup tools are meant to be washed. Besides bacteria, both brushes and sponges also accumulate dead skin cells and oil which can clog your pores leading to skin irritation and pesky pimples! Also if you apply your makeup with a dirty bush the end result can be a streaky and patchy complexion! Clean brushes definitely make for a smoother makeup application! Once you have completed your KonMari ritual, the end result will be a clean, well-organised, easily accessible collection and a new improved you!

Give yourself a spa pedicure in 8 simple steps

by Jo Boyden on Apr 15 2020
Since we are now a few weeks into quarantine and confined to the four walls of our home, we figured it’s the perfect time to practice a few at-home beauty treatments. While we’ve already covered how to create a salon-style facial at home, we have yet to talk DIY spa pedicure!Of course in a perfect world (or should I just say the world in which we were once accustomed to!) we’d be treating ourselves to a pedicure at our local spa, salon or nail bar, but since that isn’t an option for the foreseeable future, we thought we’d give you a step by step on how to give yourself a luxurious spa pedicure at home….and we promise it’s pretty easy to do! Step 1 - Get your tools at the readyThe trick to making a DIY pedicure feel like a spa experience is setting the mood. You want to create a relaxing environment – we are talking soothing music, burning essential oils and lighting that favourite candle which has been collecting dust for months – then ensure you have a stable surface and have at the ready the following tools;Nail polish removerCotton padsFoot or bath soakScrubNail clippersFoot fileNail file/bufferMoisturiserPaper towelToe separatorsQuick-drying top coatNail polishTowelCotton buds Step 2 - Prep your tootiesBefore starting your pedi you want to make sure any residual polish has been totally removed from your toes so take a cotton pad, (it’s best not to use a cotton ball as they can leave lingering cotton ‘hairs’ attached to your toes!) soak it in nail polish remover and get removing by holding the pad firmly on each toe for a few seconds then wiping away. Step 3 – Soak your feet….and relax your senses! The next step is one of my favourites – the foot soak. This will soften your feet while creating a sense of relaxation. Start by pouring a little relaxing foot or bath soak into warm water (this can be in a bath, bowl or handy foot spa!) and pop your feet in. Phytomer’s Oligomer Well Being Sensation Essential Minerals Relaxing Bath is heavenly! It’s an ultra-relaxing lightly foaming, fragranced bath enriched with Oligomer - a sodium-reduced seawater concentrate – to deliver remineralizing properties to strengthen the skin and recharge it with energy!I am also in love with the Phytomer Oligomer Pure Lyophilized Sea Water Bath, another bath soak that contains trace elements and unique minerals from seawater to balance and remineralize skin while creating an unparalleled tension-relief experience.Allow feet to soak for a minimum of 5 minutes but not too long as you don’t want them to resurface as two large wrinkled prunes! Then towel dry. Step 4 – Scrub your feet, not forgetting your legsFor the ultimate spa pedicure experience give yourself a foot and leg scrub by literally massaging a silky exfoliator into your skin for a few minutes. This will not only smooth skin but alleviate any additional tension too. I love using the Pevonia Silky Skin Body Scrub for this step, it gently polishes away dead skin cells and superficial impurities smoothing and softening the skin. Step 5 – Remove dead skinNow that your feet are soothed and soft it’s time to buff away the build-up of any dead skin on the soles of your feet. You can do this by gently scrubbing with a pumice stone or foot file. Be sure to pay particular attention to the bottoms and sides of your heels where you get most build up, as well as the balls of your feet and the area around your toes. The object is to smooth any rough parts not remove layers of skin though! Step 6 – Trim, file and shape nailsFor this step you’ll need good quality nail clippers followed by a file for shaping and smoothing.Begin by trimming any longer nails. To trim correctly, cut your toenails straight across to just above the skin. You can then smooth out the raw edge (and corners depending on the nail shape you are going for) with your nail file working in one direction until they are even. Step 7 – Moisturise and massageTo complete this part of your foot treatment slather on a coat of rich moisturiser and give yourself a mini massage working from toes all the way up your calves. This will help nourish and rehydrate skin. For this step I highly recommend the Pevonia Multi-Active Foot Cream, it provides feet with outstanding repair by soothing, smoothing, restoring and replenishing them. Step 8 – Apply your nail polishBefore you start painting your nails ensure they are dry and any excess cream has been removed. If you have any toe separators now is the time to grab them, if not you can simply roll or twist a piece of paper towel and weave it through your toes – this will prevent the polish from smudging!Start by applying a base coat first if you wish, otherwise your toes are ready for some colour! I can’t recommend enough using a healthy nail polish free of toxic ingredients commonly found in many nail polishes! I love the ELES nail polishes. They are formulated with the best of quality Australia ingredients, do not contain DBP, Toluene, Formaldehyde, Resin or Camphor and the professional patented formula holds it colour and shine for days. Although there isn’t a huge range, they do offer a few diverse shades and I’ve never had an issues with my toe nails weeks after application, as I’ve had in the past with other nail polishes which can leave your nails yellow and weak!Next make sure you shake or roll the polish bottle so you get the right consistency, then paint a thin layer of polish (followed by a second coat) with even, smooth strokes. Ensure you wait a few minutes between laying coats though.Complete your DIY pedicure with a top coat, preferably one that is quick-drying. This will seal in the colour and prolong the wear of your polish. If you have any ‘rogue’ polish marks (let’s face it before now we weren’t exactly pedi pros!) you can remove them with a little bit of your polish remover and the tip of a cotton bud. While the results might not compare to that of your trustee nail technician, your nails and feet will look and feel fab….and will be enough to tie you over until your next in-spa pedi.
self care at home

Practice self-care at home with team BC’s beauty recommendations

by Jo Boyden on Apr 07 2020
Whether you are now working from home, find yourself in isolation with extra time on your hands or are currently channelling your inner teacher while working a full-time job (who doesn’t love a bit of multi-tasking – EEK), practicing self-care is, and will continue to be imperative in these unsettling times. From DIY facials and mini makeovers to pampering baths and eyebrow maintenance, we take you through some of our team's must-try recommendations on how to keep both your skin and wellbeing in check….all you need is a little effort and the right tools! Give yourself a DIY facialWhile we can’t visit our faithful salon or spa for a while, we can practice self-care at home with a pampering DIY facial. A facial is perfect for nurturing both the skin and psych and is very simple to do. For a detailed account of how to achieve a salon-style facial click here.Indulge in a therapeutic bathLittle instantly reduces stress quite like taking a relaxing remineralizing bath. Ahhhhhh. Begin by creating a spa-like atmosphere so your entire body is relaxed – we are talking soothing music, burning essential oils, lighting your favourite candle, whatever it takes to set the mood. Next, fill the bath with a de-stressing bath foam or detoxifying salts. After having the luxury of trying many a bath product, I have to say Phytomer’s Oligomer Well Being Sensation Essential Minerals Relaxing Bath really does create an unparalleled stress-relief experience. This amazing lightly foaming product is enriched with Oligomer - a partially sodium-reduced seawater concentrate that contains all of the remineralizing properties of seawater –to strengthen and restore the skin and release all pent-up tension.Try your hand at a mani/pediWhile having my nails done professionally is something I love to treat myself to once a month, it is totally achievable to do a little DIY mani and pedi at home, and something fun you can do with your kids if you have them at home with you too! You can opt to do a simple mani/pedi which just includes a little nail clipping or filing, followed by a hand soak and then polish application (the best method for me to follow when my 4 year old demands ‘mani/pedi time!’ or for a salon-style DIY experience follow these simple tips; Start by soaking your hands or feet in warm water for a few minutes, you can add some reinvigorating bath salts to the water too! Next exfoliate your hands and feet to promote blood circulation and slough and file your nails to your desired shape. Now do the same process on your feet, but remember to file your soles with a foot file or pumice stone. Next it’s polish application time! Try ELES Cosmetics range of healthy nail polishes. Give yourself a sun-kissed glowLet’s face it, we may be stuck inside for longer than we ever anticipated, but that doesn’t mean we have to forsake that golden, sun-kissed glow, after all who doesn’t feel better with a tan! I personally love the Phytomer Sun Radiance Self-Tanning Cream, it is so light in texture, leaves no streaks and delivers a very natural, luminous, long-lasting tan. Bonus since we won’t be sunning ourselves on the beach anytime soon!Do an at-home peelSomething I love to do every few weeks is treat myself to an at-home peel. The combination of Alpha Hydroxy Acids (like glycolic and lactic acid), Beta Hydroxy Acids (like the acne-fighting salicylic acid) and gentle exfoliants like fruit enzymes dissolve the so-called glue that holds your dead skin cells together, revealing healthier and more radiant looking skin in as little as ten minutes. There are even options with skin-soothing ingredients so they’re safe for sensitive and reactive skin. One of my absolute favourites is the Pevonia Enzymo-Spherides Peeling Cream which combines natural fruit pineapple and papaya enzymes to eliminate impurities, blackheads, dead cells and toxins and in turn reveal smooth, soft and glowing skin.Try your hand at massageGive yourself or get a family member to give you a massage! And don’t underestimate your kids if you have them at home, sometimes my 6 year old is better at massages than my hubby!I’m talking anything from a relaxing hand, arm or foot massage, to a back and shoulder massage to elevate aches and pains, or a good head massage to reduce tension headaches. And no it’s not going to be anything like indulging in the hands of the professionals at your favourite salon or spa, but it will reduce stress and enable you to decompress, all the same. Before starting the massage you need to choose a massage cream, gel or oil. Your choice can hugely impact the effect of the massage as particular scents can evoke relaxation while certain ingredients will alleviate aches and pains. For an indulgent hand and arm massage I adore the Phytomer Oleocreme Ultra-Nourishing Hand Cream followed by an all over arm spritz of best-selling Pevonia Dry Oil Body Moisturiser. It revitalizes and deeply nourishes every inch of skin with squalene, lavender and chamomile. Bliss. If your legs and feet are feeling heavy and fatigued, both the Pevonia’s Tension Relief Gel and Phytomer Cryotonic Soothing Leg Gel are a must. Both products are anti-inflammatory, cooling and uplifting gel formulations for tired aching muscles and sore feet. For a therapeutic back and shoulder massage to alleviate aches and pains at the hands of stress, I would highly recommend using the Pevonia Micro Emulsion Massage Oil Anti-Stress. With its gorgeous aroma and nourishing ingredients, it immediately releases pent up tension. For more focused areas of muscle tension, the Pevonia Marine Magnesium is amazing. This de-stressing treatment oil works quickly to relieve fatigue, muscle cramps, and muscular inflammation while nourishing your body and spirit with remineralizing and wellness induced benefits. Now take your product, rub between your hands and place hands on the chosen area for massage. Set tone and rhythm of massage translating comfort and relaxation,Give yourself a mini makeoverWhile you might be currently donning the ‘makeup free look’ since you are self-isolating at home, a mini makeover can provide a creative and fun outlet for self-expression that can lift you up during tough times. I definitely find it helps me conquer any anxiety I might be feeling! At the moment, my mind is constantly preoccupied or engaged in worry, but those ten minutes of putting on makeup for fun is a time where I get away from that, after all, it’s pretty difficult to focus on all that is happening in the world when I’m playing with my amazing array of ELES makeup shades! So do yourself a favour and use this time to enjoy your makeup while it’s no longer a must-do daily task!Do some eyebrow maintenanceFor those of us who rely on having our brows maintained by an amazing brow specialist, the next few months will be tough! While you need to be very careful not to undo the amazing work your beautician has crafted, it will likely be necessary to remove a few growing strays yourself in order to maintain your brows' shape! After all perfect, natural-looking eyebrows can completely transform your face and make you look and feel 10 years younger! Who doesn’t need that in their life right now?For expert tips on how to create perfect brows at home click here.

Maintain healthy skin: How to create a salon style facial at home

by Jo Boyden on Apr 01 2020
For some, a trip to a favourite salon or spa is pure indulgence, for others, it’s a part of their everyday life, but now with the enforced closures of all salons and spas as a result of the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic, this luxury, for the foreseeable future at least, is sadly no longer an option. This, however, does not mean you have to compromise what your therapist has worked so hard to achieve for your skin! Whilst you can’t recreate what a professional can do in the salon, you can take your at-home skincare routine to the next level by giving yourself a full facial experience - it will not only be good for your skin but your wellbeing too!So read on and follow these 9 simple steps on how to master a salon-like facial and achieve healthy, radiant skin. Step 1 - PrepTo begin your spa-at-home facial, fill a bowl with hot water and soak some face cloths. Take one face cloth and while it’s warm and damp place over your face for 30 seconds to allow it to loosen any dirt or oil that’s trapped in the skin.If you are wearing any eye makeup, gently remove this by soaking or spritzing two cotton pads with eye makeup remover then place them over both eyes leaving them for a minute to allow the product to work its magic and remove any stubborn eyeliner or mascara, then gently wipe away ensuring not to drag the delicate skin. Step 2 – Double cleanseThe benefit of following a deep double cleansing ritual is that it not only removes toxins and impurities, it also primes your pores to better absorb all products to follow, leaving you with a brighter more radiant complexion. To start the double cleanse, opt for a cleansing oil. We LOVE the ELES Transformation Cleansing Oil! The oil in the product attracts the dirt, make-up, and oil on the skin surface literally melting it away. Because it’s water-soluble, when you wash off the cleansing oil you will wash away all the makeup and skin oils. This ensures your second cleanse with your normal cleanser thoroughly cleans your skin.Next take your everyday cleanser, or an appropriate cleanser for your specific skin type and cleanse your face for 30 seconds working the product into your skin in light circular motions from top to bottom or vice versa. We recommend a non-foaming milky or cream cleanser for dry and sensitive skin and a foaming or gel cleanser for oily complexions or for those with acne-prone skin.Wash off and remove excess cleanser with a facecloth. Step 3 - ExfoliateNext, gently exfoliate your skin for up to 60 seconds. Ensure you use the correct product for your skin type. If you have very sensitive or rosacea-prone skin you need to steer clear of abrasive exfoliators and scrubs which contain microbeads. We LOVE the Phytomer Vegetal Exfoliant with Natural Enzymes. It’s a soft, gentle exfoliant for even the most sensitive of skin types, as it uses natural enzymes to encourage cell turnover without scrubbing or irritating your skin. After application skin is fresh, glowy and silky smooth. For those with sensitive to normal skin we, (and many of our customers) highly recommend the Pevonia Gentle Exfoliating Cleanser. It gently polishes your skin with its unique creamy, granular texture formulated with Jojoba Beads, Saponaria, and Chamomile. Skin resurfaces smoother, softer and cleaner every time. And if your skin tends to be on the oily end of the spectrum or you are prone to blackheads or acne, the Vie Collection Renewing Exfoliating Cream is the exfoliator for you! It gently imitates the spectacular effects of dermatological peeling and microdermabrasion. Designed to make the skin look renewed, radiant and youthful, it smooths away roughness, reduces large pored appearance and reveals completely smooth, luminous skin.Remove exfoliator from skin – you can use one of your warm, damp face cloths or rinse and then pat dry. Step 4 – SteamAfter cleansing and exfoliating, next comes the steam. It helps the pores to open and makes skin further absorbent for the products to follow. There are several ways you can steam your skin. The simplest involves wetting a facecloth with warm water and placing it on your face and neck for five minutes. But if you have the time and the means, there are much better options for this important step.If you are lucky enough to have a facial steamer on hand you’re readily armed, if not, simply heat some water in a pan on your stove (to recreate a salon-style experience add aromatic essential oils like lavender to the water, or simply add a mix of dried flowers or even plain sliced lemon.) After letting it simmer for a few minutes, pour the water into a large bowl, place your face over the bowl ensuring you do not touch the water and drape a towel over your head and the bowl so the steam is unable to escape. Stay put for a few minutes. If you want to skip the steam you can add an extra boost of hydration by spritzing on a facial mist. A facial mist with an invigorating scent can help perk up your senses and prep your skin for the rest of your DIY facial experience. Step 5 – MassageDon’t overlook the benefits of a massage! While it’s definitely not quite the same doing it on yourself you can still have a lot of fun with it while reaping in the multiple benefits. This step is essential to increase both blood circulation and lymphatic drainage, leading to brighter, healthier skin.Typically in the salon, your therapist would have a customised ampoule which she would work deeply into your skin to target a specific concern. At home, you can use a massage cream for the face or a face oil. I absolutely adore Pevonia’s Vitaminic Concentrate. The luxurious oil literally drenches the skin combatting dehydration while immersing you in a sea of calm with its amazing mandarin scent. To commence the massage dampen your palms and take a small amount of your chosen product. Starting with the middle of your forehead work the product towards the temples with circular motions. Then massage along the sides of your nose and cheeks. Lastly massage lips, chin, and jawline not forgetting to massage your neck! After 5-10 minutes of massage time, remove any excess product with a warm, damp face cloth or if you’d prefer, wash your face with water. Step 6 – MaskNo facial is complete without a mask! They are a great stand-in if you're used to getting regular facials as they give your skin an extra nourishing boost with whatever ingredients you feel you need at the moment. If you want to address more than one skin issue you can use multiple masks, applying them to the different zones of your face. For oily or blemish-prone skin, a mud, clay or charcoal mask will work best as it’ll soak up the extra oil that clogs up your pores like Pevonia’s Pure Skin Charcoal Mask. Formulated with the finest micronized charcoal, this purifying mask rids skin of toxins and lifts debris out of pores, leaving the complexion smoother and pores minimized. For dry skin, you need a hydrating mask, try Phytomer’s Hydrasea Thirst-Relief Rehydrating Mask. It feeds the skin with ultimate nourishment so you can literally feel your complexion tighten and plump in nearly an instant. The end result is youthfully restored skin.If your skin tends to be sensitive, a soothing cream mask enriched with nurturing ingredients is a must. Try Phytomer’s Accept Desensitizing Mask. It smooths on skin to calm, heal, soften and hydrate the complexion and boosts the skins defence system to reduce inflammation and redness. And if you are simply concerned about skin ageing, your go-to should be the Pevonia Ageless Skin Collagen Mask – my personal favourite! it instills skin with collagen polypeptides, Vitamin A, Green Tea and Mandarin Orange Extract to repair fine lines and wrinkles, encourage healthy cell turn over and effectively increase your skin's overall radiance.A good face mask also prepares and primes the skin, expanding pores to allow ingredients to penetrate deeply, so after mask application and removal (use lukewarm water to remove all traces of the facial mask, pat dry), it’s the perfect time to apply your favourite serum and then moisturiser. Step 7 – ToneIf you haven’t yet incorporated toner into your skin care routine, now is the time. Toning is a very important part of the routine as it helps clean and close the pores as well as brighten the skin and restore its balance. With a cotton pad, gently apply a toner which is best suited to your skin type all over face and neck, removing any excess face mask. Step 8 – SerumNow that your skin is in a more receptive state, you’re going to want to give it a good dose of nourishment by adding a serum into the routine. Apply your chosen serum for your specific needs and let the antioxidants and peptides work its way deep into your skin for immediate skin therapy. Step 9 – MoisturiseAny skin-pampering session requires replenishment so finish your treatment with moisturiser to seal in all the benefits of your facial! This last and essential step to your home facial will rehydrate your skin and retain any moisture loss. Just as your therapist would, choose the perfect moisturiser for your particular needs. If your skin is lacking radiance and lustre, one of my all-time favourite moisturisers is the Phytomer Hydra Continue Radiance Energizing Cream. This lightweight cream rich with vitamins gives an “invigorating boost” effect to the skin, transforming dull, devitalized skin into a brighter, firmer more youthful complexion. If you are dealing with acne-prone skin try Pevonia’s Problematic Skincare Cream. This light-textured and oil-free moisturiser is formulated with Glycolic Acid, Calendula and Panthenol to combat blemishes, prevent pore clogging and soothe, hydrate and desensitize the skin. And if you are simply focused on skin aging, we can’t get enough of our best-selling Age Correction Marine Collagen Cream. Combining Marine Collagen and Squalane, this rich, deeply nourishing cream softens fine lines and wrinkles while replenishing vital nutrients.Simply apply your chosen product all over your face and gently massage, letting it absorb into your skin.Finish by applying eye cream to the delicate under-eye area. My personal favourite at the moment is the Phytomer Pionniere XMF Reset Eye Fluid. It has visibly reduced my dark circles and puffiness as well as fading wrinkles! Just remember even if you only have 10 minutes to take care of yourself and put yourself first, make it really count. We recommend indulging in this DIY facial once a week to maintain healthy skin until you can return to your salon or spa for a full facial treatment….
