Using retinol? Here are the mistakes we see most often

by Jo Boyden on Jun 10 2026
Retinol has earned its reputation as one of the most powerful anti‑ageing ingredients in skincare. Dermatologists swear by it, beauty editors are constantly writing about it, and if you’re in your 30s, 40s or beyond, chances are someone has already told you that you need to be using it. So you bought your retinol serum, slathered it on, hoped for an overnight miracle… and woke up with dry, flaky, irritated skin that somehow made you look older, not younger! If this sounds familiar, don’t panic, and definitely don’t give up on retinol just yet! The problem usually isn’t the ingredient itself, but how you’ve used it. Retinol can deliver incredible results, but it's also one of the easiest skincare ingredients to get wrong. Over the years, we’ve seen countless customers give up on this powerhouse ingredient because they assumed it simply wasn’t right for their skin, when in reality they were making one (or several!) very common mistakes. The good news? They’re all easy to fix! If you’ve recently introduced retinol into your routine, or you’re thinking about giving it a try, here’s what you need to know, the 7 common retinol mistakes we see time and time again, and exactly how to avoid them.   The most common retinol mistakes (and how to avoid them) Mistake 1. Starting too strong, too soon This is one of the biggest mistakes we see is people jumping straight into a high-strength retinol and using it every night. Retinol is an ingredient that works best when introduced gradually. Starting slowly gives your skin time to adapt and can help minimise irritation, redness and flaking. What to do instead: Start with a gentle formula like Pevonia’s Micro Retinol range and use it two to three nights per week before gradually increasing frequency. Pevonia’s Micro Retinol range is a great, safe, and side-effect free alternative to using prescription Retinoic Acid. What’s more, every product in the Micro-Retinol® line contains a powerhouse trio of vitamin C, Vitamin E, and Micro-Retinol®! The addition of vitamin C and E not only ensures Micro-Retinol®’s stability, but also that the skin’s nutrients and density are renewed and preserved!   Mistake 2: Applying retinol to wet skin This is a sneaky mistake that almost everyone makes! When your skin is wet or even damp, it acts like a sponge, absorbing products much faster and deeper than usual. While this is amazing for hyaluronic acid, it can be the opposite for retinol! As the quick, deep absorption can greatly increases the risk of dryness, peeling, redness, and irritation. What to do instead: After cleansing your face at night, pat it thoroughly dry with a towel. Then, wait 5 to 10 minutes before applying your retinol. Ensuring your skin is completely dry slows down the absorption rate, giving you all the anti-ageing benefits without the angry side effects.   Mistake 3. Using more product than you need When it comes to retinol, more isn't better. Applying a thick layer won't deliver faster results and may simply increase the likelihood of irritation. What to do instead: A pea-sized amount is usually enough for the entire face.   Mistake 4. Forgetting moisturiser Many people assume retinol should be applied on its own in a serum form and left to work its magic. Unfortunately, this can leave skin feeling dry, tight and uncomfortable. What to do instead: Follow your retinol serum with a retinol moisturiser, or another nourishing moisturiser to help support your skin barrier and maintain hydration.   Mistake 5. Skipping SPF This is arguably the most important mistake on the list! Retinol can increase your skin's sensitivity to the sun. Using retinol at night but neglecting SPF during the day can undermine your results and increase the risk of sun damage. What to do instead: Wear a broad-spectrum SPF every single morning, regardless of the weather (you should be anyway if your aim is to prevent premature ageing!)   Mistake 6. Mixing too many active ingredients Retinol doesn't always play nicely with every ingredient in your skincare cabinet! Using strong exfoliating acids (like glycolic & salicylic acids), retinol and other potent actives (like vitamin C, Benzoyl Peroxide) all at once can leave skin irritated and overwhelmed. What to do instead: Keep your routine simple and introduce new active ingredients gradually. You can still use these ingredients in your overall skincare routine just never on the same morning or night. For best results use your retinol at night and vitamin C in the morning. And the days you use your exfoliating acids, have a rest from retinol.  The ingredients that do pair perfectly with retinol include hyaluronic acid, ceramides and niacinamide.   Mistake 7. Expecting instant results We live in a world of overnight shipping and instant gratification, but retinol doesn't work that way! Visible improvements in skin texture, tone and fine lines can take weeks or even months to appear but it will! You just need to be patient. What to do instead: Consistency is key. Stick with your routine and give your skin time to respond. The results are worth waiting for! To learn more about retinol. What it does, what other skincare ingredients it works best with (and which to avoid) and the many benefits, click here.   Retinol remains one of the most researched and effective ingredients in skincare, but success comes down to how you use it. Remember to start slowly, support your skin barrier, wear SPF daily and be patient with the process, then reap the rewards! When used correctly, retinol can become one of the hardest-working products in your skincare routine, helping to improve the appearance of fine lines, uneven skin tone and overall skin texture over time.

Fine lines, wrinkles and dark spots? Here’s how retinol can help

Fine lines, wrinkles and dark spots? Here’s how retinol can help

by Jo Boyden on Mar 21 2025
If you’re starting to notice fine lines and wrinkles forming on your face, or perhaps you’re more concerned about dark spots that just won’t fade? It might be time to introduce retinol into your skincare routine! This powerhouse ingredient that every beauty expert swears by, has earned its reputation for smoothing, brightening and rejuvenating skin like no other! But what makes retinol so effective and how can you use it and get the best results when it comes to your ageing skin? We’ve got the answers!   What is retinol and why is it more superior to other anti-ageing ingredients? Retinol is a powerhouse form of vitamin A and is one of the most researched and dermatologist approved ingredients for skin renewal! It works by accelerating cell turnover, stimulating collagen production, and regulating melanin to improve skin texture, firmness, and tone! This holy-grail ingredient penetrates deep into the skin, promoting faster regeneration and shedding of old, damaged cells and it’s this process that reduces fine lines, wrinkles and evens out skin tone (we are talking radically diminishing dark spots, redness and uneven pigmentation! Amazing right?) So, your skin will appear smoother and more youthful over time. But what makes retinol superior to other anti-ageing ingredients is its scientifically proven ability to target these multiple signs of ageing simultaneously. While ingredients like hyaluronic acid hydrate and peptides support collagen, retinol actively repairs and renews skin at a cellular level. Unlike antioxidants that primarily protect, retinol corrects visible ageing by boosting collagen and elastin, preventing future damage while reversing existing signs. Retinol also has the ability to enhance the effectiveness of other skincare ingredients, improving overall skin health. Genius!   How does retinol reduce fine lines and wrinkles? Retinol reduces fine lines and wrinkles by boosting cell turnover, stimulating collagen production, and improving skin texture. As we age, skin renewal slows down, leading to dullness and deeper lines. Retinol speeds up this process, helping to shed dead skin cells and reveal fresher, smoother skin. It also stimulates collagen and elastin production, which plumps the skin and improves firmness, reducing the appearance of wrinkles. Additionally, retinol refines skin texture by unclogging pores and evening out tone, making fine lines less noticeable. With consistent use, it helps maintain a youthful, radiant complexion while preventing new wrinkles from forming.     How does retinol reduce dark spots and uneven skin tone? Sun damage, acne scars, and hormonal changes can leave behind dark spots that linger for months (or even years) on your skin. The great news is retinol actually fades discolouration by accelerating cell turnover and inhibiting excess melanin production. It helps skin shed damaged, pigmented cells more quickly, revealing brighter, fresher skin underneath. Retinol also stimulates collagen production, which improves skin texture and smooths discolouration. By regulating melanin distribution, it fades hyperpigmentation, sun damage, and post-acne marks over time. Retinol also enhances the skin’s ability to absorb other brightening ingredients, making treatments like vitamin C even more effective. With consistent use, retinol creates a more even, radiant complexion, reducing the appearance of dark spots and promoting a healthy, youthful glow. When paired with sunscreen (a must!), it helps prevent new spots from forming too by regulating melanin production! Phew.   The best retinol products to help reduce fine lines and wrinkles and fade dark spots With so many retinol products on the market, it can be hard to know which to trust, that’s where we, the BC professionals can help! We highly recommend Pevonia’s Micro-Retinol® range. Every product in the range which includes Micro-Retinol® Foaming Cleanser, Micro-Retinol® Essential Toner, Micro-Retinol® Serum and Micro-Retinol® Essential Moisturiser utilizes a specialized technology to create Retinol micro-particles that get delivered deep into the epidermis. This means complete product absorption, no skin irritation, and immediate results! It’s a great, safe, and side-effect free alternative to using prescription Retinoic Acid. What’s more, every product in the Micro-Retinol® line contains a powerhouse trio of vitamin C, Vitamin E, and Micro-Retinol®! The addition of Vitamins C and E not only ensures Micro-Retinol®’s stability, but also that the skin’s nutrients and density are renewed and preserved! What’s more for the month of March 2025, when you purchase The Micro-Retinol® Essential Moisturiser, you’ll receive the matching Micro Retinol Cleanser and Lotion 50ml for FREE!   How to use retinol for maximum results and without irritation! If you haven’t tried retinol before, but this blog has convinced you, you should (you won’t look back I’m telling you!) you need to know how to introduce it into your skincare routine for the best results and without irritation! Because retinol is so potent it requires careful use, including moisturising and SPF! Here’s how to incorporate it into your routine: Start by introducing it slowly. Use it 2-3 times a week maximum at first, then increase as your skin adjusts (Remember a little goes a long way, and using too much too soon can lead to irritation). Start with a low concentration (0.25% – 0.5%) and work your way up. If you have sensitive skin, opt for micro-encapsulated or lower-strength retinol. Apply at night! Retinol makes your skin more sensitive to the sun so it’s best not to apply in the morning. Use a pea-sized amount to cover your face. Always follow with a moisturiser to keep skin hydrated and prevent dryness which retinol can sometimes cause. Retinol can be paired with other ingredients like Hyaluronic acid and Niacinamide. In fact, Hyaluronic acid and retinol are actually a dream team when it comes to skincare. While retinol addresses signs of ageing, hyaluronic acid provides a burst of essential hydration. The combination of both ingredients ensures skin remains moisturised, plump, and balanced. Never skip SPF during the day! Because retinol can make your skin sensitive to sunlight it’s essential to use SPF every single morning!   Believe me when I say retinol is a game-changer when it comes to fine lines, wrinkles, and dark spots. It’s the no.1 skincare essential besides SPF of course when it comes to preventative ageing. With regular use, it can dramatically improve your skin’s texture, tone, and overall youthfulness. The key is patience though, results don’t happen overnight, but give it anywhere from 3-6 weeks, and you’ll start to see smoother, brighter, and healthier-looking skin. Trust us, the wait is worth it!
Beyond retinol: The skincare line you need to fight ageing

Beyond retinol: The skincare line you need to fight ageing

by Jo Boyden on Feb 21 2025
We’ve talked about retinol, its many anti-ageing benefits, the best retinol tips for sensitive skin, why you should use retinol, and the ingredients it’s best paired with, but when it comes to the best retinol products it can be hard to know where to start, or which retinol products you can trust because not all retinol products are created equal and using a retinol serum or cream that is too potent for your skin can, unfortunately, do more damage than good. We are talking dryness, redness, peeling and increased sensitivity!  Well, what if I was to tell you there is a retinol line that is far superior to other lines on the market, a line that is ideal for all skin types and offers a unique approach that maximizes the benefits of retinol while minimizing potential drawbacks? Introducing Pevonia’s Micro Retinol line!   The science behind Micro-Retinol Traditional retinol products often face challenges with stability and absorption because the retinol molecules can be large and unstable, making them harder to penetrate the skin deeply and more likely to cause surface irritation. Pevonia’s Micro Retinol line, however, addresses these issues through its exclusive Micro-Retinol technology, which involves micronizing (breaking down) retinol molecules into smaller, more refined micro-particles. This process enhances the stability of retinol (ensuring the retinol remains effective over time) and ensures optimal delivery into the skin, allowing for deeper penetration and more effective results without skin irritation! Amazing right?    The Pevonia Micro Retinol line Every Micro Retinol product contains a powerhouse trio of vitamin C, vitamin E, and Micro-Retinol® The addition of vitamins C and E not only ensures Micro-Retinol®’s stability, but also that the skin’s nutrients and density are renewed and preserved. What’s more Pevonia’s Micro Retinol products contain all-natural retinol sourced from green leafy vegetables! There are 4 products in the line that work synergistically for optimal results and provide a complete anti-ageing skincare routine! These include: Micro-Retinol Essential Foaming Cleanser This gentle, yet powerhouse sulfate-free cleanser combines Micro-Retinol with Hyaluronic Acid and Vitamin C to cleanse, exfoliate, and hydrate the skin, leaving it bright and refreshed. Micro-Retinol Essential Toner An alcohol-free toner enriched with Micro-Retinol actives, Aloe, Chamomile, Green Tea, Vitamins C and E, and Hyaluronic Acid. It balances, soothes and prepares the skin for the serum and moisturiser! Micro-Retinol Essential Serum This potent anti-ageing serum that delivers concentrated Micro-Retinol, hyaluronic acid, and vitamin C deep into the skin to boost collagen production and accelerate cell turnover, resulting in smoother, more youthful-looking skin. Micro-Retinol Essential Moisturiser This powerhouse moisturiser formulated with Micro Retinol, hyaluronic acid, vitamin C and marine collagen, deeply hydrates, smooths, brightens and firms the skin, enhancing the effects of the serum and providing a protective barrier against environmental stressors. Skin looks smoother, brighter and more youthful with refined fine lines and wrinkles. And for the months of March and April 2025, when you purchase the Micro Retinol Essential Moisturiser you will receive the accompanying Micro Retinol Cleanser and Lotion 50m for FREE!   So why choose Pevonia's Micro-Retinol line? If you’re looking for a retinol product that delivers powerful results without irritation, Pevonia’s Micro-Retinol Line is an excellent choice! Unlike traditional retinol formulas, Pevonia uses advanced micro-emulsification technology to refine retinol into smaller molecules, allowing deeper penetration and enhanced stability. This means you get maximum anti-ageing benefits like improved collagen production, smoother texture, and reduced fine lines, without the harsh side effects. Genius! Plus, the line is enriched with hydrating and soothing ingredients like hyaluronic acid, aloe, and antioxidants to nourish and protect your skin. If you want a highly effective yet gentle retinol routine, Pevonia’s Micro-Retinol Line is a standout! But don’t just take our word for it. Our customers love the Pevonia Micro Retinol line too!   “I have been using this line for 18 months and I now have compliments all the time from strangers about my “amazing skin”. I use the cleanser/toner/serum/moisturiser and would recommend to anyone looking to improve skin texture!” – Alice P “I have only started using the Micro Retinol Moisturiser recently and could already see the improvements in my skin, feels smooth and radiant.” – Jay “The Micro Retinol Moisturiser is the most beautiful cream I have ever used; light texture, non greasy, non shiny. Changes in my skin are an increased smoothing of lines and crepe-skin areas, softening, hydrating and contouring and reduced pigmentation. Some results were instantly visible and now after three weeks my skin just keeps improving. I am 60 and have tried this after other brands became ineffective. Now my skin appears luminous and more refined. It’s a surprise to see a brighter, smoother complexion at my age.” - Annie “I've been using other Pevonia products for about a year now but decided to try the Micro Retinol Serum to bump things up a bit. I saw almost instant results! Coarse lines, especially around my mouth have quite literally disappeared. Same thing for smile lines and crow’s feet. My 60 year old skin feels as smooth, soft, and healthy as when I was....well, I can't even remember when my skin was this glowing. I am anxiously waiting for my order of Micro Retinol Moisturizer to arrive now. This product delivers great results and is totally worth the price.” – Julie M “I’ve been using this line (micro retinol) for years! I have purchased and tried more expensive products that come on the market but always come back to this line of Pevonia bc it just simply works best! Also bc it’s Pevonia, it always smells glorious!” – Brooke K “I love this retinol serum! I have been using it for a while now and find it smooths out fine lines and adds an overall healthy glow to my skin. Love it!” – Veronica   Essential tips on how to introduce retinol into your routine Introduce the product slowly – apply it only at night, one or two times a week for the first week and gradually increase application. Retinols are best applied at night, particularly because it makes your skin more photosensitive. Ensure you wear sunscreen during the day when using retinol (you should be wearing sunscreen everyday whatever the reason though!) Allow the product to fully absorb into the skin (this could take up to 30 minutes) before layering any other products. Just make sure to use any acne-fighting products (i.e. anything that includes benzoyl peroxides or salicylic acid) on the nights you don’t use your retinol product. Give the product time to work its magic. This could take a few months but the results WILL be worth it. We promise! Prepare for the inevitable adjustment period your skin will go through before you see the results you want. Because retinol causes the skin to shed cells faster than normal, you’ll likely experience a few weeks of change to your skin including some flakiness and dryness. Retinol is NOT recommended for women who are pregnant or breastfeeding. By addressing common retinol challenges through advanced technology and offering a comprehensive routine, Pevonia provides a superior solution for those seeking to rejuvenate their skin.
Your guide to preventative ageing: How to maintain youthful skin

Your guide to preventative ageing: How to maintain youthful skin

by Jo Boyden on Feb 14 2025
We all know ageing is inevitable, but looking older before our time? That is something we can prevent! Premature ageing (we’re talking fine lines, wrinkles, loss of firmness and more) is often the result of environmental damage, bad habits and how well we care for our skin! But by making the right choices now, you can keep your skin smooth, firm and glowing for years to come, really! From powerhouse ingredients to smart daily habits, keep reading for our expert tips on how to maintain youthful skin for as long as possible! So why start worrying about your skin before it shows signs of ageing? Our skin naturally produces collagen and elastin, the two proteins responsible for keeping it plump and firm. But from our mid-20s onwards, collagen production starts to decline leading to loss of firmness, fine, lines and wrinkles. Cell turnover also starts to decrease causing dullness and uneven skin texture. To make matters worse, external aggressors such as UV exposure, pollution and oxidative stress (as well as certain lifestyle choices!) accelerate these processes by breaking down collagen and triggering inflammation. The good news is with the right skincare and lifestyle choices you can actually slow down the paging process and prevent it happening prematurely!   The non-negotiables of preventative ageing 1. SPF: Your no.1 anti-ageing essential! If you only do one thing for preventative ageing, let it be wearing sunscreen every single day, come rain, hail or shine! And yes, even when it’s cloudy too! 90% of visible ageing is actually caused by sun exposure!! Crazy right? UV rays break down collagen and elastin, leading to premature wrinkles, sunspots, and sagging skin. Just be sure to use a broad spectrum SPF 30 + and reapply every few hours if you are spending the day outdoors. And remember slather on your neck, decolletage and the often forgotten area – your hands, as these are the areas that show ageing first! Many people can’t stand the smell or consistency of sunscreen (we hear you!) or worry about what is the best option for their sensitive skin, well not all sunscreens are the same! For more on the benefit of SPF, the best sunscreens and choosing the right one for your skin click here. 2. Hydration = plump, youthful skin! Dry, dehydrated skin makes fine lines more noticeable, so you want to ensure you are hydrating your skin both inside and out daily! Make sure you try to drive your 6-8 glasses of water a day, use a hyaluronic acid serum (this will lock in moisture!) and layer your skin with a ceramide-rich moisturiser in the mornings to help strengthen your skin barrier. Honestly hydration is the key to skin looking pump and dewy! 3. Retinol - the gold standard for ageing prevention Retinol (a form of Vitamin A) really is the no. 1 ingredient when it comes to preventing premature ageing. It’s every beauty expert’s holy grail! It works by increasing cell turnover, boosting collagen and in turn keeping skin firmer, more youthful and even toned!   The thing with retinol though is it can be harsh if used incorrectly. Plus finding the right product can be imperative especially if your skin is sensitive. Just be sure to start with a low concentration, opt for encapsulated retinol as it slowly releases into the skin, reducing irritation, apply a pea-sized amount just 1-2 times a week at first and if your skin tolerates it slowly increase frequency, use it at night because it makes skin more sun sensitive and finally always follow with a moisturiser as this will help to prevent any irritation. For all you need to know about retinol click here. 4. Antioxidants – your skin’s best defence Think of antioxidants as your skin’s shield against damage from pollution, UV rays and stress. They help neutralise free radicals which break down collagen and speed up ageing! You can eat an antioxidant rich diet but also applying antioxidant ingredients directly to your skin can be game-changing. Ingredients including; Vitamin C which brightens skin and boosts collagen, Niacinamide which strengthens the skin barrier and reduces inflammation and Vitamin E which hydrates and protects against environmental damage. 5. A Strong skin barrier = slower ageing  There are many factors that can lead to our skin barrier being damaged. From excessive sun exposure and extreme weather conditions to harsh skincare and over exfoliation! And when our skin barrier is damaged, it can lead to sensitivity, redness and faster ageing. To counteract this, it’s important to look for certain ingredients when it comes to your skincare. Ingredients like ceramides, peptides and fatty acids will help your skin to stay strong and resilient! 6. Gentle Exfoliation for a radiant glow Exfoliation is another skin necessity.  This is because exfoliation removes dead skin cells, enabling new ones to come through and in turn helping skin look brighter, smoother, and more youthful. But using the wrong exfoliator for your skin type or simply overdoing it can damage the skin barrier, leading to irritation and sensitivity. Eek! So be sure you use gentle exfoliants if your skin tends to be on the more sensitive side (formulated with ingredients like lactic acid or fruit enzymes), exfoliate 2-3 times a week max (not daily!) and always follow with hydration to keep your skin balanced. 7. Don’t forget your eyes and lips! Our delicate eye area is the first place to show ageing because the skin is thinner and more delicate. Fine lines, puffiness, and dark circles can make you look older than you feel so make sure you introduce a good eye and lip cream into your daily skincare routine and be gentle with your application! 8. Prioritize your beauty sleep! Your skin repairs itself while you sleep, producing collagen and elastin to keep it firm and youthful. Poor sleep, or lack of! Leads to dullness, puffiness, and accelerated ageing so try to aim for 7–9 hours of quality sleep every night (this can be difficult we know!!) and sleeping on a silk pillowcase can really help reduce friction and prevent sleep lines. 9. A skin-boosting diet What you eat really can show on your skin! A diet rich in antioxidants, healthy fats, and hydration will help skin stay radiant and youthful. We are talking berries, leafy greens, nuts, and fatty fish! Just be sure you avoid excess sugar and processed foods as scarily they break down collagen! 10. Reduce Stress as it shows on your skin! It’s easy to say don’t stress but we all stress! I usually do daily with all that I have going on! But chronic stress unfortunately increases cortisol levels, which can break down collagen and cause wrinkles, dullness, and breakouts. So finding ways to relax can really benefit your mind, body and skin! You can try practicing meditation, yoga, or deep breathing, even taking some time out to practice self-care can make all the difference. I personally love to have a relaxing bubble bath once or twice a week (when my kids allow it!) and listening to music can help take me to my happy place! When you work out what help you unwind, try and do it daily!   When to start preventative skincare? It’s never too early to start! But no matter your age, it’s always the right time to protect and nourish your skin. Just remember though, the sooner you start protecting, hydrating, and nourishing your skin, the more youthful and radiant it will look in the years ahead.
Retinol and sensitive skin: Everything you need to know

Retinol and sensitive skin: Everything you need to know

If you’re wanting to try retinol since you’d heard it’s the anti-ageing powerhouse, but you’re worried about it exacerbating your sensitive skin, you are not alone. While this ingredient is renowned for its age defying and skin renewing abilities (and for very good reason!) it can also be too strong for those prone to redness, irritation or even dryness. But does this mean you should avoid retinol altogether? Definitely not! With the right approach, even sensitive skin types can reap the benefits of this skincare superstar! The key to retinol and your skin is choosing the right product – not every retinol product is created equal! You also need to know what to pair retinol with when it comes to your skincare routine to keep your skin happy! Whether you’re looking to fight fine lines, improve your skin’s texture, fade dark spots, or all of the above! Keep reading for everything you need to know about retinol and the best tips for sensitive skin.   What is retinol? Retinol is one of the most powerful proven ingredients in skincare, the “holy grail” when it comes to anti-ageing or so the beauty experts say! Retinol is actually a form of Vitamin A that works by speeding up cell turnover, essentially encouraging our skin to shed old, damaged cells and replace them with fresh healthy ones!   What makes retinol so effective? Retinol is a true multi-tasker! It has been proven to smooth fine lines, fade dark spots and improve skin texture. Its key benefits include; Retinol stimulates collagen production keeping skin firm and youthful. It unclogs pores, reducing breakouts, making it effective for acne-prone skin.   Retinol is a champion in tackling hyperpigmentation. It can lighten dark spots, sun spots, and even out skin tone by inhibiting the production of melanin, the pigment responsible for discolouration. It works deep within the skin to enhance radiance and even out tone.  Sounds amazing right? The catch? Retinol can be a little too powerful for some, especially those with sensitive or reactive skin.   Why does retinol irritate sensitive skin? Retinol’s fast-paced cell renewal can cause temporary dryness, redness, and flaking, a process often called the “retinol purge.” As it penetrates the skin, retinol stimulates collagen production and exfoliation, but for those with a weaker skin barrier, this process can be too harsh, causing irritation and inflammation. Retinol also reduces oil production, which can lead to dehydration, making sensitive skin feel even more fragile. But don’t worry! With the right formula and technique, you can build up your skin’s tolerance while still enjoying all of retinol’s anti-ageing and skin-smoothing benefits!   How to use retinol if you have sensitive skin 1. Choose the right retinol strength Not all retinol products are created equal. If you have sensitive skin, start with: Encapsulated retinol as it slowly releases into the skin, reducing irritation. Low-strength retinol gentle enough to introduce gradually. 2. Start slow because less really is more Think of retinol like a workout for your skin, you don’t start with heavy weights on day one! Apply a pea-sized amount just 1-2 times a week at first. If your skin tolerates it slowly increase frequency. 3. Apply retinol at night Unfortunately, when it comes to retinol, exposure to sunlight can significantly degrade its effectiveness making it less potent, this is because UV rays break down the retinol molecule rendering it less able to work on your skin. More importantly retinol makes the skin more sensitive to sunlight increasing the risk of redness, irritation and sun damage. As previously mentioned, retinol works by accelerating cell turnover, which means fresh new skin cells are more exposed and vulnerable to UV rays. Therefore, it's best to apply retinol at night! By doing so the ingredient can go to work undisturbed, maximizing its benefits and promoting skin repair while you sleep! 3. Always use a moisturiser Hydration is key to reducing irritation. If it’s just a retinol cream you are using, apply it to your skin at night and use a nourishing moisturiser rich in hyaluronic acid in the morning. If it’s a just retinol serum you’re looking to apply, make sure you use a good moisturiser both morning and night. By applying a thin layer of moisturiser before and after your retinol serum will help buffer its potency while still delivering results. 4. Never skip SPF! Retinol makes your skin more sensitive to the sun, so daily broad-spectrum SPF 30+ is non-negotiable. Without it, you risk undoing all the benefits by exposing fresh skin to UV damage. 5. Watch for signs of overuse If you notice excessive peeling, stinging, or irritation, take a break and focus on repairing your skin barrier with ceramides, niacinamide, and hydrating serums.   How long does retinol take to work? Results from retinol skincare can vary. Some people may notice improvements in a few weeks, days even, while others might take a couple of months. Generally, it takes at least 12 weeks to see significant changes in terms of reduced fine lines, improved texture, and diminished dark spots. Consistency is key, and it's crucial to be patient as the benefits of retinol often accumulate over time. Once you see results you will never look back!   What ingredients can you pair with retinol without irritation? To minimise irritation while using retinol, pair it with hydrating and soothing ingredients that strengthen the skin barrier. Some great options include: Hyaluronic Acid – Deeply hydrates and prevents drynessNiacinamide – Calms redness, reduces sensitivity, and strengthens the skin barrierCeramides – Restore moisture and reinforce skin’s protective barrierPeptides – Support collagen production and repair the skinSqualane – Provides lightweight hydration without clogging poresCentella Asiatica (Cica) – Soothes inflammation and promotes healingAloe Vera – Hydrates and reduces irritation Avoid pairing retinol with strong exfoliants (AHAs, BHAs) to prevent excessive irritation.   The best retinol products for sensitive skin We highly recommend Pevonia’s Micro-Retinol® range. Fighting Skin Aging and Sun Damage with Retinol

by: PEVONIA USRetinol, we’ve all heard of it but what exactly is it and what does it do? Read on and learn about the anti-ageing wonder ingredient that works to combat nearly all signs of sun damage and skin ageing. What Is Vitamin A?Vitamin A is one of the best ingredients to treat signs of aging and sun-damaged skin. Vitamin A is an antioxidant vitamin and may be in the form of retinol, retinyl palmitate, tretinoin, retinoic acid, retinal, retinaldehyde and beta-carotene.About RetinolRetinol is the most active and skin-friendly form of Vitamin A and is a derivative of Vitamin A obtained through enzymatic conversion from natural Vitamin A (retinyl palmitate) and retinol. It is one of the best ingredients for rejuvenated skin as it addresses each of the causes, processes and symptoms of aging and sun-damage. Overall, it promotes a smoother, more even skin tone and texture, and is considered the gold standard in anti-aging.How Retinol WorksRetinol dramatically enhances skin cellular performance and repairs cellular signs of aging. With age, cell reproduction becomes sluggish, resulting in slow, uneven cell renewal and cell turnover. Retinol promotes rapid cell renewal and turnover by helping break down dead skin, and pushing dead cells out faster. This paves the way for newer, plumper skin cells and signals the deeper layers to produce more collagen and elastin to support the “new” skin. In essence, retinol has a resurfacing effect, as it smoothes, firms and evens skin tone.Retinol can also be considered a skin organizer. Dead skin cells in aging or sun-damaged skin become disorganized, much like piles of bricks after a building demolition. Retinol reorganizes skin cells, as if reconstructing the bricks back into a well-constructed brick wall. Retinol does this by normalizing enzymatic activity, which is needed for healthy cell division (mitosis).Retinol addresses the collagen loss, dehydration and uneven pigment production that occur with aging and sun overexposure. Collagen loss causes wrinkles and sagging. When retinol comes in, it strengthens and stimulates collagen production, smoothes lines, plumps the skin and repairs sun damage. Dryness and dehydration that occur give skin a tight, flakey look and feel. Retinol restores moisture balance by maintaining hydration and reducing evaporation of water. This improves elasticity and flexibility, plus increases strong and healthy lipids in the membranes.Additional Benefits of Vitamin AAging and sun damage also cause irregular and uneven production of pigment (melanin). Retinol helps melanocytes (responsible for producing pigment) dispose of trapped melanin. With age skin becomes thinner. Retinol improves the skin density and bolsters the skin barrier by rebuilding the upper layers of the skin (epidermis) with stronger, thicker, healthier cells. As an antioxidant, retinol neutralizes free radicals that damage the skin and cause aging.Studies show that Vitamin A can reduce pH levels to help normalize the skin disrupted by factors that cause inflammation and aging; one more way retinol fights aging.Retinol works optimally within the epidermis, and indirectly benefits the dermis as well to reveal new, smoother, brighter skin.Vitamin A and PevoniaPevonia® uses state-of-the art manufacturing technologies to stabilize retinol, as well as ensure maximum results without the irritation associated with prescription retinoids or retinoic acids. Retinol is in Pevonia’s Timeless Repair Cream, Stem Cells Phyto-Elite® Intensive Cream, lumablanc® Cream and De-Aging Body Balm – Papaya Pineapple. To counteract the light and air sensitivity of retinol, Pevonia developed their Micro-Retinol® that is a much smaller, more stable form of retinol that is skin-friendly, yet effective. For this form of Vitamin A try Pevonia’s Micro-Retinol® line (Micro-Retinol® Essential Foaming Cleanser, Micro-Retinol® Essential Toner, Micro-Retinol® Essential Serum and Micro-Retinol® Essential Moisturizer).Retinyl Palmitate is a pre-formed, ester version of Vitamin A that has antioxidant and emollient properties that can be found in the Rejuvenating Dry Skin Cream, Vitaminic Concentrate, Évolutive Eye Cream, Timeless Repair Cream and Timeless Eye Contour.Beta-carotene, the most important precursor of Vitamin A formation, is another skin- friendly source of Vitamin A. This natural carotenoid consists of two retinyl groups, which support healthy cellular functions, growth and metabolism. It also acts as an emollient, which makes it key for dry, aging skin. Beta-carotene is in the following Pevonia products: Dry Skin Lotion, Combination Skin Cleanser, Micro-Retinol® Essential Foaming Cleanser, Micro-Retinol® Essential Moisturizer, De-Aging Saltmousse – Papaya-Pineapple and De-Aging Body Balm – Papaya-Pineapple.Schedule one of these professional Pevonia treatments to experience more of the benefits of Vitamin A: Micro-Retinol® Essential Treatment, Rejuvenating Dry Skin Mask, Stem Cells Phyto-Elite® Intensive Mask, or lumafirm® Body Treatment.Retinol is not to be confused with retinoic acids, retinoids such as Retin-A®, Avita® and Renova®. These dermatologist-prescribed retinoids can cause burning, redness, itching, skin thinning, flaking, even cracking, due to having a different chemical structure than retinol.
