Conceal like a pro: How to cover spots and blemishes

by Jo Boyden on May 23 2025
We’ve all been there. You wake up, look in the mirror, and there it is! A stubborn blemish or pesky pimple has made an appearance overnight! But fear not! Whether you're dealing with occasional breakouts or more persistent imperfections flawless-looking skin is still within reach, all you need are the right products and techniques. Keep reading as we share expert-approved tips and must-have makeup essentials to help you conceal blemishes like a pro.   1. Skin prep is essential Before reaching for your makeup, it’s essential to start with clean, hydrated skin. Even if your complexion is a little oily or you worry that moisturising might exacerbate your spots, I’m telling you don’t skip this step! In fact, applying moisturiser is key to ensuring your makeup glides on smoothly, especially over dry or flaky blemishes! Just be sure to cleanse skin with a gentle cleanser to remove excess oil and bacteria. Then, apply a lightweight, non-comedogenic moisturiser to balance your skin and prevent dryness, which can actually trigger excess oil production and lead to even more breakouts. Healthy, well-hydrated skin is key to flawless makeup application! 2. Apply a primer If you are dealing with blemishes, before concealing it’s a great idea to use a primer. A good quality primer will help blur imperfections, reduce redness, and keeps makeup in place throughout the day. Choose a mattifying formula if your blemishes tend to be oily, or a hydrating one for dry, irritated spots. To learn more about primers and the best one for your skin, click here. 3. Colour correct if needed For very red or inflamed blemishes, a green-toned colour corrector can work wonders. Apply just a dab to neutralise the redness before going in with your concealer. 4. Choose the right concealer formula Not all concealers are the same so depending on your skin type you’ll want to pick the one that will work best for your skin. Just remember Liquid concealers are generally best for light-to-medium coverage and blending seamlessly.  Cream concealers can be ideal for stubborn spots needing full coverage. Also creamy, full-coverage concealers adhere well to the skin and don’t cake.  Once you’ve chosen the type of concealer, you’ll want to select a colour that matches your skin tone exactly. 5. Application Matters: Dab, Don’t Rub and layer smartly, less is more! When covering blemishes, it’s easy to go overboard. Instead, apply thin layers and build coverage gradually. To apply gently dab (don’t rub!) using your ring finger, a clean concealer brush or sponge. Next you’ll want to blend the edges of the concealer into the surrounding skin. This works best using a damp beauty sponge. You want to keep the product concentrated over the blemish, but seamless at the edges. Remember too much concealer at once can look cakey or draw more attention to the spot rather than hiding it! 6. Set It for long-Lasting coverage Lock your concealer in place with a light dusting of translucent powder, this helps prevent creasing and keeps shine at bay (just be sure to not over powder!) Next apply a gentle spritz of setting spray which will add longevity while keeping your skin hydrated. 7. Let Your Skin Breathe When You Can While it’s great to know how to conceal spots when you need to, don’t forget to let your skin breathe on makeup-free days. Pair this routine with acne-friendly skincare like Hubislab’s A.C Clearing range or Pevonia’s Pro Corrective Line. And use a good spot treatment to treat blemishes at the source. Pro tip: Avoid using highlighter or shimmery blush too close to the blemish, it can draw light and attention to the area.

Skin Cycling: What is it and how will it improve your skin?

by Jo Boyden on Apr 19 2024
Ever wondered how some people seem to effortlessly maintain glowing, radiant skin? Well the answer could be due to skin cycling, a skincare concept that has gained huge popularity over recent months and for very good reason, after all skin cycling has the ability to transform your skin in a short period of time! If you aren’t familiar with skin cycling, you’re probably wondering how this is so, and what it even is! Keep reading as we reveal all there is to know about this skincare trend and how it may help improve your complexion too! What is skin cycling? Skin cycling is a strategic approach to your skincare routine that aims to improve results while minimising irritation. It involves alternating between using active ingredients and nourishing ingredients. Instead of bombarding your skin by applying active ingredients every single night, you cycle through them over a four-night period, enabling your skin to rest for a few nights. How does skin cycling work? While there are plenty of variations to skin cycling, a typical skin cycle lasts for four days - two days “on” (otherwise known as “active nights” using active ingredients) and two days “off” (otherwise known as “rest nights” using nourishing ingredients). The theory behind this particular trend is to give the skin a break from products such asexfoliants and retinols which can be harsh or stripping if used consecutively over a period of time. Your classic skin cycling routine The skin cycling rotation begins with exfoliation on the first night(preferably with a chemical exfoliant like lactic acid or glycolic acid), followed by retinol on the second. The third and fourth nights are dedicated to recovery with skin barrier-protecting serums and moisturisers to nurture and hydrate the skin. Then, the cycle repeats.By alternating between active and rest nights, you allow your skin to repair itself and avoid overloading it with too many actives at once. The result? Better results without the irritation! Why Skin Cycling? With so many products out there from cleansers and exfoliators to serums, oils and more, (and let’s not forget the game-changing ingredients we all need to look out for in our skincare) it’s easy to overload our skin. So many of us will layer multiple ingredients night after night without considering recovery. Skin Cycling prevents this. Using specific products on different days regenerates the skin and improves skin quality. Who will benefit from skin cycling? Anyone can! If you aren’t getting the results you want out of your skincare routine despite using products with the best skincare ingredients, skin cycling could be for you! Or ff you suffer from skin irritation, skin cycling can work wonders! It prevents you overloading your skin with multiple active ingredients day after day. By avoiding overloading the skin you’ll maintain its health, balance, and overall well-being. Remember overloading the skin with excessive skincare products and ingredients can lead to skin issues or exacerbate an already existing condition! Firstly, it can disrupt the skin barrier, compromising its ability to retain moisture and protect against external aggressors. This disruption may result in increased sensitivity, irritation, and dryness. Furthermore, overloading the skin can clog pores and contribute to acne breakouts, particularly if heavy or occlusive products are used. Finally, layering too many products may interfere with the absorption and efficacy of active ingredients, leading to diminished results. Simplifying your skincare routine can help streamline your regimen and ensure that each product effectively addresses your skin's needs. The best products to use for skin cycling?Since skin cycling is all about exfoliation and retinol followed by repair and nourishment, these are the products we would highly recommend:Days 1 & 2Vie Collection Cleansing Gel with Glycolic, Lactic and Salicylic Acids – This foaming cleansing gel combines glycolic, lactic and salicylic acids to stimulate cellular activity, break the intercellular glue between dead cells and thoroughly cleanse skin.Pevonia Renewing Glycocides Cream - Combining glycolic acid with hydration hero hyaluronic acid, this treatment cream works to dissolve dead skin cells, improving skin texture and diminishing fine lines too!
