Hormonal acne explained: Causes, tips and the best skincare

by Jo Boyden on May 22 2026
There’s nothing quite as frustrating as waking up, looking in the mirror, and seeing a blemish that has literally appeared out of nowhere overnight! Especially when you thought your breakout days were left behind in your teenage years! The thing is hormonal acne doesn’t just affect teenagers, it’s incredibly common in adulthood too, particularly in our late 30s, 40s and beyond. The tricky part is that hormonal acne is very different from a standard breakout, and because it can be so stubborn, it needs a more thoughtful approach than simply trying to “dry it out”. Instead, the key is to support the skin with gentle, targeted care that helps calm inflammation, protect the skin barrier and keep breakouts under control. Keep reading as we share the best professional skincare tips, ingredients, and expert-approved products to help keep stubborn hormonal breakouts at bay and your skin looking healthier, calmer, and more balanced!   How do you know it’s hormonal acne? Hormonal breakouts are often linked to changes in hormones that can affect oil production and inflammation in the skin. It commonly shows up as deep, tender spots, recurring breakouts or congestion that tends to cluster along the chin, jawline and lower cheeks, and occasionally the neck. This is distinctly different from congestion related acne which tends to appear across the T-zone (forehead, nose and chin.)  For many people, hormonal acne flares a week or so before a period, due to hormonal shifts. As oestrogen (the “female” hormone) levels drop, androgens (“male” hormones) have a relatively stronger effect on the skin often increasing oil production and congestion, which can lead to your skin breaking out. Hormonal acne also flares during other hormonal shifts such as stress, pregnancy, perimenopause and menopause!   The best skincare ingredients for hormonal acne The goal with hormonal acne is to keep the skin barrier strong and supported, target active breakouts and calm the inflammation that drives the redness and pain. Some of the most effective ingredients include: Salicylic & lactic acids to help clear pores and reduce congestion. Niacinamide to calm redness and balance oil Clay & charcoal to detoxify pores and absorb excess oil Hyaluronic acid for lightweight hydration Vitamin A and retinol alternatives to support skin renewal Soothing botanicals to reduce irritation   The best routine for hormonal acne Because hormonal acne tends to be deeper and more persistent than the occasional blemish, it often responds best to a routine that is both targeted and gentle. A simple routine is often the best place to start when treating hormonal acne. One of the biggest mistakes people make is over-cleansing or using harsh products that leave the skin feeling tight and dry. When the skin barrier becomes compromised, it can trigger even more oil production and irritation! Instead, it’s best to choose professional skincare that deeply cleanses without stripping the skin and focus on maintaining hydration and balance. Remember also that consistency is key, hormonal acne rarely improves overnight, but gentle, targeted skincare can help visibly improve the skin over time.   1. Choose a gentle, purifying cleanser You want to opt for a cleanser that removes excess oil, sunscreen and impurities while clearing out dead skin cells without stripping your skin and leaving your face feeling tight or dry. Remember over-cleansing can irritate the barrier and make breakouts feel worse. Our recommendation: Medicalia Clarifying Cleanser Specifically created for those with breakout prone and sensitive/oily skin, it’s formulated with both Salicylic and Lactic acids to gently but effectively unclog pores and soften skin while improving clarity! Its potent foaming suds work very quickly to eliminate surface bacteria, toxins, impurities and makeup while combatting inflammation too! “I’ve been using this cleanser for a year now. Keeps my sebaceous filaments in check and has helped control my hormonal acne better than any other cleanser I’ve used.” – Sophie H 2. Use targeted treatments that balance oil production This is where actives can be helpful. Specific ingredients can support clearer-looking skin while helping to calm inflammation. To tackle the stubborn hormonal acne you’re experiencing, look for a targeted serum that helps balance excess oil production, calm redness and irritation, and support the skin’s natural healing process without over-drying the skin. Our recommendation: Pevonia Soothing Propolis Concentrate This is one of BC’s best-selling serums and it’s a particular favourite for hormonal breakouts because of its extraordinary natural antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. Propolis is a resinous compound produced by bees that has been used medicinally for thousands of years and in skincare, it’s one of the most effective naturally derived antibacterial actives available. Applied to the skin, Propolis helps reduce the bacteria that colonise clogged pores and contribute to inflammatory breakouts. It calms redness and swelling around active spots, speeds up the skin’s healing process and helps prevent new breakouts from forming! Amazing right? And unlike harsh antiseptic actives, it does all of this without disrupting the skin barrier or causing dryness! Now you can see why it’s a Pevonia favourite. What makes it particularly useful for hormonal acne though is that it can be used as a preventative applied consistently during the week or two before your period when you know breakouts are likely, it helps minimise the severity of what appears and speeds up recovery when blemishes do develop. “I love this product, i bought it while i was pregnant and had severe hormonal acne and it seemed to calm and soothe my skin and reduced the "angriness" of my skin!” – Melinda I 4. Support skin healing & hydration It’s a myth that oily and acne prone skin doesn’t need nourishment! A common mistake people with acne make is skipping moisturiser because your skin feels oily. By doing so your skin will become dehydrated, go into panic mode and actually product more oil to compensate! You just need an oil-free, healing moisturiser. Our Recommendation: Medicalia Clarifying Cream This lightweight, fast absorbing clarifying moisturiser is ideal for hormonal acne-prone skin because it delivers hydration without feeling heavy, greasy, or pore-clogging. Formulated with salicylic and glycolic acids it helps calm congestion, rebalance excess oil, and support the skin barrier. It also works to keep skin feeling hydrated, soothed, and healthier-looking while helping reduce the appearance of redness and breakouts. What makes it especially great for hormonal acne is that it helps nourish and comfort stressed, inflamed skin without overloading it (something many richer creams can do!) The result? Skin feels more balanced, less irritated, and better supported overall, with a clearer, calmer-looking complexion over time. “it's expensive but it's been a lifesaver for my acne prone skin! I've noticed it helps keep my sebaceous filaments in check also.” – Sophie H 5. At night, use a “cell turnover” treatment Because hormonal acne is often linked to congestion, excess oil, and trapped dead skin cells, encouraging your skin to renew itself more effectively is essential. Overnight treatments that support healthy cell turnover can help keep pores clearer, improve skin texture, and reduce the appearance of persistent breakouts over time. Our recommendation: Medicalia Retinol & 'C' Care Retinol is considered the gold standard for acne-prone skin because it helps speed up cell turnover, keeping pores clearer and reducing congestion. Combined with Hyaluronic Acid, Ceramides and Vitamin C, it also helps to brighten the skin and fade the lingering red or brown post-breakout marks that blemishes often leave behind. 6. Don’t forget SPF Daily sun protection is essential, especially if you are using active ingredients that may make your skin more sensitive. A good SPF helps protect your skin while you work on improving its overall condition. Our recommendation: Hubislab Herb 8 Soothing Blemish Balm SPF30 PA++ - 50g Formulated with Zinc Oxide, SPF30 broad-spectrum filters, and Hubislab’s signature Anti Toxin Herb 8 complex, this soothing sunscreen designed for sensitive skin works to alleviate irritation, calm redness, support skin recovery, and strengthen the skin barrier! It’s your SPF and skin treatment in one! 7. Once a week apply a mask Adding a weekly mask into your skincare routine can make a huge difference when it comes to managing hormonal breakouts. Masks help give the skin a deeper clean while targeting excess oil, congestion, and inflammation, all without needing to overload your skin with harsh daily treatments! Use a detoxifying or clarifying mask to help absorb excess oil, decongest pores, and calm inflammation, especially in the lead-up to your period when hormonal breakouts often flare. Our recommendation: Pevonia Pure Skin Charcoal Mask This purifying charcoal and clay mask is ideal for oily, congested, and breakout-prone skin. It helps draw out impurities, absorb excess oil, and leave the skin feeling clearer, smoother, and more balanced without stripping away essential moisture. It’s the perfect weekly reset for skin that feels congested, inflamed, or prone to stubborn hormonal breakouts. “Being in my 50's I wasn't sure if this would dry my skin out, but I bought it coz I had a few breakouts - hormonal I guess. I've used it daily for about 3 days and it's totally cleared my skin up - it feels de-congested, clear and smooth. I love this mask.” – Melinda Hopkins The lifestyle habits that can actually make a difference too Skincare can manage the symptoms of hormonal acne beautifully but if you want to address the root cause as well, these lifestyle factors are worth taking seriously: Avoid picking or squeezing breakouts Because hormonal blemishes are deep, picking or squeezing them (even though tempting) won't bring them to a head. Picking often leads to more inflammation and can increase the risk of marks or scarring. Track your cycle If you notice your skin flares up a week before your period, you can adjust your skincare a few days early to include more purifying, anti-inflammatory ingredients as a preventative step. Reduce your dairy and sugar intake While diet doesn't cause acne, high-sugar foods and dairy can cause spikes in insulin and inflammation, which can worsen hormonal flares. Reducing high-glycaemic foods is actually one of the most evidence-backed dietary changes for hormonal acne. Swapping refined carbohydrates and sugars for whole grains, vegetables and protein helps stabilise blood sugar and reduce androgen activity. Focus on stress management Stress is actually one of the biggest contributors to hormonal breakouts! This is because stress releases a hormone called cortisol, which directly tells your skin to produce more oil leading to inflammation and flare ups! Believe me we know saying manage your stress is easier said than done! But something as simple as medication, listening to music, breathing mindfully and exercising (even if it’s a walk) can help regulate cortisol levels. Also never underestimate the power of a calming self-care ritual! And a good night's sleep (7 to 9 hours nine hours is not a luxury for acne-prone skin, it’s part of the treatment!) Consider spearmint tea There is actually meaningful clinical evidence that spearmint tea has mild anti-androgenic properties. Two cups a day has been shown in small studies to reduce hormonal acne. It’s not a miracle cure but it’s a pleasant, zero-risk addition to a management approach. Talk to your GP or dermatologist If your hormonal acne is severe, cystic or significantly affecting your quality of life, please seek professional medical advice. There are effective medical interventions available, from oral contraceptives to spironolactone, that work alongside good skincare.   Hormonal acne can take time to improve, so consistency is essential. Rather than attacking the skin with aggressive products, focus on supporting and strengthening the skin barrier while using targeted ingredients that help reduce congestion and inflammation over time. With the right skincare routine, professional advice, and healthy lifestyle habits, hormonal acne can absolutely become more manageable.
Breaking out at 40 and beyond? How to fight adult acne

Breaking out at 40 and beyond? How to fight adult acne

by Jo Boyden on Mar 14 2025
Waking to breakouts when you thought acne was behind you? Feeling frustrated but not sure what to do? Believe it or not, adult acne is more common than you think, and it can be just as frustrating, if not more, than those pesky teenage pimples we all endured! From hormonal changes and stress to skincare mistakes and environmental factors, there are a number of reasons why blemishes can return in adulthood. The good news? With the right targeted skincare routine and lifestyle changes, you can achieve clear skin once again! Keep reading as we discuss what’s causing your breakouts and, more importantly, our expert approved tips and solutions on how to treat them!   Why you’re getting breakouts - the most common triggers for adult acne Unfortunately, adult acne can be caused by a number of factors, often different from the breakouts we experienced in our teens, so it’s important to try and identify your specific root cause. Everything from hormonal imbalances, stress, diet, and even the medication you might be taking can contribute to your breakouts. Here are the most common triggers:  1. Hormonal Imbalances If you are experiencing blemishes and acne in your 40’s and 50’s, chances are it could be to do with perimenopause and the menopause. And if you had a history of pimples and acne as a teenager, you’ll more likely to be susceptible to getting acne flare ups now too! Unfortunately, fluctuations in our hormones, particularly androgens (like testosterone), can increase oil production, this excess oil can then mix with bacteria, dead skin and debris leading to clogged pores and breakouts! This is why acne also often flares up around the menstrual cycle, and during pregnancy, as well as due to conditions like polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). 2. Stress When you're stressed, your body produces more cortisol, which can stimulate oil glands and worsen acne. Stress-induced inflammation can also slow healing, making breakouts last longer. 3. Skincare & Makeup products Using the wrong skincare or makeup or simply overloading your skin with it, can clog pores and trigger breakouts. Too many products, as well as heavy, oil-based, or comedogenic products can worsen acne, while harsh cleansers can strip your skin and in turn cause it to go into overdrive and overproduce oil, which is where the cycle comes into play!  4. Diet Some studies suggest that high-glycemic foods (like white bread, potatoes, rice, cereals), dairy, and processed sugars can trigger acne by increasing inflammation and oil production so if you are ingesting much of these foods it could be one reason for your increased blemishes! 5. Lifestyle It can be hard to get that 8-9 hours of sleep a night believe me! But lack of sleep, as well as other lifestyle choices like smoking and drinking alcohol and sugary drinks can and will affect your skin in one way or another and it’s usually through the increase in blemishes. 6. Environmental Factors Pollution, sweat, and even your phone screen or pillowcase can harbor bacteria that contribute to breakouts. Regularly cleaning your phone and changing pillowcases can help reduce bacteria exposure. 6. Medications Certain medications, including steroids, birth control pills, and antidepressants, can disrupt hormones or increase oil production, leading to breakouts. 7. Over-Exfoliating or Harsh Skincare Too much exfoliation or harsh acne treatments can strip the skin’s natural barrier, leading to more oil production and irritation, making acne worse instead of better!   How to treat breakouts and adult acne 1. Cleanse gently (but effectively!) Many people with acne-prone skin make the mistake of over-cleansing or using harsh scrubs, which can strip the skin and lead to even more breakouts. Instead, opt for a gentle cleanser with acne-fighting ingredients like salicylic acid. We highly recommend Hubislab A.C Clearing Purifying Cleansing Gel. It’s a soothing gel-based cleanser which has been especially formulated (salicylic acid and powerful antioxidant green tea) for congested and acne prone skin to completely but gently clear pores, removing makeup, dirt and grime from the skin without over-drying, all whilst protecting the skin against oxidative damage. 2. Don’t skimp on moisturiser It’s a common misconception that oily or acne-prone skin doesn’t need moisture! The truth is, when your skin is dehydrated it can actually produce even more oil to over compensate, leading to further breakouts, eek! You do need to be careful about the moisturisers you choose though! When looking for the best moisturisers for acne prone skin, you’ll want to choose lightweight, non-comedogenic moisturisers that hydrate without clogging pores, like the ProCorrective Clear-Control Moisturiser for balancing hydration and oil control. It’s carefully selected non-comedogenic (non-pore clogging) super skin-clearing, calming and hydrating ingredients (we are talking Zinc Chloride, Hydrolyzed Wheat Protein, Cinnamon, Thyme, Mallow, Witch Hazel, Tea Tree Extract, Niacinamide, Glycolic and Salicylic Acids, Microcitrus Australasica, a.k.a. Caviar Lime and Hyaluronic Acid!)combine to deeply target acne by rapidly clearing away blemishes and clogging, while moisturising and smoothing uneven texture. It’s so good! In fact the whole Pevonia ProCorrective line is outstanding for the management of adult acne! 3. Exfoliate regularly (but don’t overdo it!) Exfoliation is key to unclogging pores and preventing breakouts, but doing it daily can damage your skin barrier. Stick to gentle chemical exfoliants with AHAs or BHAs (like glycolic or salicylic acid) two times per week to keep your skin smooth and clear. We love Pevonia Enzymo Spherides Peeling Cream. Do not let the name ‘peeling cream’ put you off though! Papaya and Pineapple have been selected for their enzyme peeling action, an action that gently digests away impurities, sebum, toxins and the dead skin cells, instead of abrading or burning them off. So, it’s gentle, really gentle, and it’s effective too! Nothing makes skin feel cleaner, lighter or more purified than this jar of goodness and it’s easy to use! Simply apply a thin layer on cleansed skin, wet the fingertips with warm water, this will help to “wake up” the enzymes, then leave them to do their thing for 5-10 minutes, then rinse away.  4. Spot treat your skin When a breakout appears, resist the urge to squeeze it please! And yes, I know how tempting it can be, but squeezing spots can spread bacteria and exacerbate your acne! Instead, use a targeted spot treatment with ingredients like benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid, sulfur, or tea tree oil to reduce inflammation and speed up healing. 5. Manage your stress Easier said than done we know, but there are some amazing aids and coping mechanisms when it comes to stress. Try to give yourself a little “me” time. This might feel like an impossibility especially if you are a busy, working mum! But we are simply talking even a few minutes a day to soak in a bath, read your book, listen to a podcast, meditate, exercise or simply listen to music! Breathing exercises can also be game-changing and I know have seriously helped me! One of the main symptoms of perimenopause is anxiety and being in my mid 40’s I have definitely been hard hit. I find music and breathing has helped no end. I’m telling you just a little time out can make a noticeable difference in your skin’s clarity.   6. Choose your makeup wisely Heavy, oil-based foundations can clog pores and worsen acne so you’ll want to opt for non-comedogenic, breathable makeup formulas, and always remove your makeup before bed to prevent buildup and irritation! Mineral makeup is the best makeup for acne prone skin, its free from common irritants such as fragrances, preservatives, and synthetic dyes, making it less likely to cause breakouts or allergic reactions plus so many formulations are lightweight and breathable, so you literally feel like you aren’t wearing makeup (even though it will help conceal those blemishes) and will literally allow your inflamed skin to breathe and not be clogged! I know I am biased but I have been using ELES Mineral Makeup for YEARS. And I will never use anything else. I can hand on heart say their products have helped my skin, prevented me from getting spots even! I personally love the ELES Mineral Sheer Tint and ELES Mineral Powder Foundation, but the no. 1 ELES best-seller is the Liquid Powder Mineral Foundation, and the reviews speak volumes! All three products are mineral, filled to the brim with skin friendly, anti-ageing ingredients and do not ever clog pores! Brillant stuff. 7. Watch your diet If you are struggling with adult acne, you should try and cut down on high-glycemic foods which have been linked to acne flare-ups. Also try reducing your intake of processed sugars and dairy products. Instead eat a diet rich in antioxidants (like leafy greens, nuts, and berries) and healthy fats (like fish, avocado and unsalted nuts), and increase hydration to help balance skin. 8. Try to get enough sleep Sometimes getting that 7-9 hours of solid sleep a night can seem like an impossibility, I know! But sleep really is essential for skin health because it allows for cellular repair, collagen production, and hydration balance. During deep sleep, our body boosts blood flow to the skin, helping to reduce inflammation, prevent premature ageing, and promote a radiant complexion (crazy right?) 9. Stay kind to your skin and consistent with your routine From spots to adult acne, we know how frustrating breakouts can be! But constantly switching products can often make things worse! Remember to treat your skin with gentle, nourishing care and give products time to work their magic. Clear skin doesn’t happen overnight! Sticking to a consistent skincare routine with the right products for your skin type really is key to preventing breakouts in the long run.   By following these simple yet effective tips, you can take control of adult acne and enjoy a clearer, healthier complexion, we promise!

How to treat adult acne: The skincare line that actually works

by Jo Boyden on Jan 24 2025
Find yourself suddenly dealing with adult acne? The unexpected breakouts, stubborn spots, irritated skin? Believe me when I say you are not alone! Here at BC we get customers asking us why they might be suffering from acne in their 40’s and beyond all the time as well as the best solutions. Well, we can’t recommend enough a new (tried-and-tested by us) collection from Pevonia that tackles adult acne head-on while being kind to your skin! Whether your breakouts are stress-related, hormonal, or perhaps genetic, this routine will make a huge difference to your skin and your confidence! Cue Pevonia’s ProCorrective Line, a game-changing solution for tackling adult acne at its root!   Firstly, why are you suffering from adult acne? Adult acne can be incredibly frustrating, especially when you thought breakouts were a thing of the past! Unlike teenage breakouts though, adult acne often stems from a combination of factors from hormone changes to stress to genetics to pollution and more! Hormonal fluctuations often play a big part in adult acne though, whether it be during menstruation, pregnancy, perimenopause or menopause, this is because it can increase oil production leading to clogged pores which can trigger breakouts. Androgens, particularly testosterone, stimulate oil glands, worsening breakouts. These hormonal shifts also increase inflammation and disrupt the skin's barrier, making it more prone to bacterial overgrowth and persistent blemishes! Stress, which many of us adults can feel on a daily basis! Elevates cortisol levels, stimulating oil glands and worsening acne. And then there are the environmental factors like pollution or bacteria from touching your face which may clog pores, while certain skincare or makeup products can exacerbate the issue. Unfortunately what we eat and drink can also play a role, with high-glycemic foods and dairy potentially contributing! And then of course there are genetics (thanks parents!) and underlying medical conditions, such as hormonal imbalances or PCOS which can further increase the likelihood of adult acne. Eek!   Why Choose the Pevonia ProCorrective Line? Whatever your reason for suffering from adult acne, following a targeted skincare routine can make all the difference. And we might indeed be biased but Pevonia’s ProCorrective is one of the best targeted adult acne lines on the market especially when it comes to hormonal acne! Acne - your most asked questions answered by the BC experts

by Jo Boyden on Jan 19 2024
From stress inducing activities (hello school holidays) to overindulging (another cheese platter anyone?) the December/January holiday season (or silly season as we like to call it!) are rife with potential triggers that can lead to acne flare ups! That’s why this time of year is when we, at BC, get inundated with your questions about acne.Whether acne is something you’ve lived with for many years, or it’s decided to crop up now as an unwelcome adult guest, acne is one of the most common skin woes and we are here to help! We've listed the most frequently asked questions about acne and tapped into the wisdom of our skincare experts to get you the best possible answers. Keep scrolling to find out what they are… Q: Why am I getting acne as an adult, I thought acne was for teenagers?Sadly acne isn't only reserved for awkward high school years. Several factors can contribute to acne in adults. These include;hormonal changes: This often occurs during menstruation, pregnancy, perimenopause, or menopause. Hormonal imbalances can stimulate the sebaceous glands, leading to increased oil production and breakouts.Stress: High stress levels can wreak havoc on your skin. Stress triggers the release of certain hormones, such as cortisol, which can stimulate oil production and contribute to acne. Additionally, stress may lead to unhealthy lifestyle habits, like poor sleep and an imbalanced diet, which can further exacerbate skin issues.Diet: While the link between specific foods and acne isn't universally agreed upon, some people find that certain dietary factors such as high-glycemic foods and dairy products can impact their skin and increase the risk of acne.Skincare and makeup products: The products you use on your skin could be a culprit. Some ingredients in skincare or makeup products may clog pores or irritate the skin, leading to breakouts. Ensure the products you are using are of good quality and are suitable for your specific skin type too!Environmental factors: Exposure to environmental pollutants, such as smog or certain chemicals, can contribute to skin issues. Additionally, humidity may increase the likelihood of acne. Not good news this time of year!Genetics: Your genetic makeup plays a role in your skin's characteristics including its susceptibility to acne! If your parents or close relatives had acne, you might be more prone to it as well. Thanks parents!Medications: Certain medications can have side effects that include acne. If you suspect your medication might be contributing to your acne, it's best to have a chat with your GP.Over-cleansing or products that are too harsh for your skin: Sometimes, the desire to combat acne can lead to over-cleansing or the use of products which you think will help but are in fact too harsh for your skin! This can strip the skin of its natural oils, prompting it to produce even more oil in response. More oil produced equals more breakouts! Q: Can I blame overindulging in chocolate for my breakouts?Sorry to all you chocoholics out there but the link between chocolate and acne isn’t actually crystal clear. It's more about your overall diet, which does include sugar (and dairy too) so if you’ve been hitting the cheese board like me this silly season, or indulging in too many sweet treats, this definitely could be impacting your skin. Remember everything in moderation! And instead try to indulge in foods such as almonds, blueberries and avocados as they are among a range of foods which may help to reduce and prevent inflammation. Q: How can I get rid of my pimples overnight? Some spot treatments can work wonders at reducing, and in some cases eliminating, unwanted blemishes overnight. This is because they encourage rapid healing by controlling bacteria, reducing inflammation and diminishing the follicular accumulation of keratin. For the most effective results look for spot treatments formulated with ingredients such as benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid. We highly recommend Phytomers Oligopur Blemish Target Gel as the best spot treatment! It targets blemishes with precision, rapidly improving the skin’s appearance and eliminating spots almost overnight! Simply apply a small amount of product to your pimples and let the powerful ingredients keep your skin follicles clean to achieve an even and bright complexion by morning. Q: Can following a specific skincare routine really help my acne? Absolutely! Consistency is key. A gentle cleanser, non-comedogenic moisturiser, and targeted treatments can help keep acne at bay. Also, don't forget sunscreen – it's like armour for your skin, yes even for those of us with acne! And I know it sounds counterintuitive, slathering sunscreen all over acne flareups but believe me when I say avoiding sunscreen can worsen the appearance of acne, and if the skin gets sunburnt, the symptoms of acne can be painfully exasperated.Just be sure to choose your sunscreen wisely. Using the right sunscreen can prevent and heal acne, soothe the skin, keep dark spots and clogged pores at bay, all while protecting from harmful UV rays.We love Medicalia Sunscreen SPF 40 with Blue Light Shield. Q: Can I wear makeup if I have acne prone skin?Absolutely! But you must be careful with what you use! Look for non-comedogenic, oil-free formulas. Mineral makeup can be a game-changer as it doesn’t contain any chemical nasties or additional oils, nor will it aggravate skin or clog pores. Genius! Here at BC from the staff to the experts we all love ELES Cosmetics Liquid Powder Mineral Foundation. And for more translucent coverage the ELES Mineral Foundation Powder. Both products are perfect for those with skin sensitives, are free of any chemical nasties, provide effortless and natural coverage and most importantly will allow your skin to breathe freely (so no pore clogging in sight) plus you'll feel like you aren’t wearing makeup at all! What more could you ask for?For more information on makeup for acne prone skin, including the best makeup tips click here. My pimples really need popping, is it ok to do so?No! Experts cringe at the thought of DIY extractions. Popping pimples can lead to scarring and more inflammation. Let it be, and consider a spot treatment instead. Are all pimples the same?Nope! From blackheads and whiteheads to cystic acne, the acne family can get a little confusing! And each type of pimple or acne requires a slightly different approach too! To understand more about the type of acne you could be suffering from click here. Could stress and lack of sleep being affecting my skin?Yes sir-eee. Lack of sleep and high stress levels can trigger hormonal imbalances leading to breakouts. Try to prioritise self-care, practice relaxation techniques and try to get to bed earlier if you can for ample beauty sleep. If you struggle with getting to sleep make sure you turn off devices an hour before bedtime and instead listen to some soothing sounds. We love listening to the ambient relaxation playlist on Spotify.

While acne is a common skin concern, it doesn’t mean you can’t take steps to radically reduce it! Keep reading as we reveal our 10 top tips… Cleanse twice daily Start your skincare routine with a gentle cleanser to remove dirt, excess oil, and impurities from your skin. Be sure to cleanse both morning and night, but we picky with what products you use. You don’t want to choose a harsh cleaner that’ll strip your skin of its natural oils as this can lead to an increase in oil production and in turn more potential breakouts! Eek. You want to look for gentle formulations rich in ingredients such as salicylic acid or lactic acid as they can help prevent the buildup of sebum (which can contribute to acne.)Try Medicalia Clarifying Cleanser. With a balanced blend of lactic and salicylic acid the gentle cleanser works quickly and effectively to eliminate toxins, impurities, surface bacteria, and make-up. It’s ideal for inflamed, sensitive, acne prone and oily skin types.“I have problem skin & after using this product my face is clear & people have commented on the changes.” Laurie Exfoliate weekly, but be sure to be gentle Incorporating a mild exfoliant into your skincare routine can do wonders in the fight against acne. Exfoliating will help to remove any dead skin cells sitting on the surface of your skin which can clog pores and lead to breakouts!Just remember over exfoliating can have the adverse effect and actually irritate your skin so make sure to exfoliate just once a week to start and use a gentle exfoliator.Try Phytomer’s Vegetal Exfoliant with Natural Enzymes. It’s a soft exfoliant for even the most sensitive or rosacea prone skin and uses natural enzymes to encourage cell turnover without scrubbing or irritating your skin.“Gentle on the skin and worked well even for my acne prone skin.” OliveIf you do love a granular scrub though opt for a gentle version like Pevonia’s Gentle Exfoliating Cleanser.Formulated with jojoba beads, Saponaria and chamomile,it gently polishes skin with its unique creamy, granular texture, removing dead skin cells, impurities and toxins to reveal instant radiance and softer, smoother skin too! You’ll love the immediate gratification you’ll get from this formidable favourite of ours.“This is the best exfoliating cleanser I have ever used. I'm so impressed with the results, my skin feels so much smoother and cleaner.” Chloe Never skip your moisturiser Even though sometimes applying moisturiser to oily, acne prone skin can seem counterintuitive, it is essential as you want to steer clear of a damaged skin barrier! With no moisture at all, your skin would become dehydrated and begin to over-compensate by producing more oil! Something you definitely don’t need when it comes to oily, blemish and acne prone skin!Instead look for lightweight, oil-free moisturisers that won’t feel heavy on your skin.Try: Phytomer Acnipur Blemish Solution Fluid. This lightweight gel-cream works amazingly on problematic skin reducing overall breakoutsThe formula also helps eliminate shine for a clean, matte complexion. With regular use, this acne treatment not only helps diminish the appearance of existing blemishes, but it prevents future breakouts too!“This fluid is almost like a serum but lighter in texture. I use it after I wash my face morning and night. I have noticed a reduction in breakouts on my skin and also a more mattifying appearance on my skin”. Alyssa Spot treat with care For targeted acne treatment, use spot treatments. These can help reduce inflammation and kill acne-causing bacteria. Remember to use them sparingly and only on active breakouts to avoid drying out your skin.Try: Phytomer’s’ Oligopur Blemish Target Gel, it’s a phenomenal spot treatment which targets blemishes with precision, rapidly improving the skin’s appearance and eliminating spots almost overnight! I couldn't get my chin to clear up and w/in a few days of using phytomer my chin was clear again! Joanne Never skip on sunscreen Some acne treatments can make your skin more sensitive to the sun, so protecting your skin is crucial to prevent post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation and sun damage. The Sun, heat and humidity can also cause oil glands to become overactive, which in turn can lead to acne breakouts! To prevent these breakouts choose and oil-free, non-comedogenic sunscreen and apply it liberally daily! Be aware of what you are eating What you eat can have a huge impact your skin's health so it’s imperative if you are suffering from acne to Incorporate a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, and limit your intake of processed foods and sugary treats. Consuming foods high in antioxidants and vitamins can help promote clear, radiant skin too!Try;Fatty fish such as salmon and tunaYellow and orange fruits and vegetables such as carrots, apricots, and sweet potatoesSpinach, kale and other dark green and leafy vegetablesTomatoesBlueberriesAvocadoswhole-wheat breadbrown ricequinoaSoybeans Reduce your stress levels Sounds easier said than done I know, we all have those days, weeks, months even where we are super stressed but said stress can lead to acne flare ups! This is because stress-related hormone CRH can bind to receptors in the skin’s sebaceous glands, increasing oil production. Excess oil production can then cause pimples. So, if you keep breaking out and just can’t understand why, stress might be to blame, so try to relax!Try; listening to relaxation music or meditate. Also, something as simple as taking a relaxing bubble bath every evening can really help. Exercise is also imperative! While exercising will increase blood flow, helping nourish skin cells and keeping them vital, it has also been accountable for reducing stress-related acne. Keep your phone clean! And your pillowcase too! Yup, a sudden breakout can be from something as simple as your phone or pillowcase (well anything that touches your face really that could be hosts for harmful bacteria!) And anytime you hold your phone to your face or lie on your pillowcase you are spreading the bacteria to your skin. So, if you haven’t done so for a while, try sanitizing your phone screen and wash that pillowcase of yours more often, it could make a big difference to your skin. Hydrate inside and out We all need to stay hydrated every single day, after all our bodies can’t operate effectively without water, but when I say stay hydrated, I mean drive plenty of water and drink it throughout the day, 8 glasses minimum!Hydration is key to maintaining healthy skin as it helps flush out toxins and keeps your skin looking plump and radiant. When it comes to makeup, go mineral Makeup can be a real trigger for pesky pimples. Especially if it’s full of pore clogging ingredients and oils. face mapping - woman checking her pimples and breakouts

Breakouts? Why you’re getting reoccurring pimples

by Jo Boyden on Jun 02 2023
I’m pretty certain when I say, we’ve likely all suffered from pimples many a time in our lives, and just when you think they are behind you, you suddenly get another bout of unwanted blemishes! Pimples are actually a very common skin concern for people of all ages and skin types. But have you ever wondered why those pesky pimples keep cropping up, even when we are in our 40’s, 50’s and older even? And often in specific areas of our face too! Maybe you tend to get them around your chin more? Or on your nose or forehead perhaps?Well, according to the ancient Chinese practice of face mapping, the location of your pimples can actually tell you a lot about your overall health. That’s right dependant on where your pimples are appearing on your face, they can actually mean different things, from digestive issues to hormonal fluctuation. Keep reading to learn all about the importance of face mapping, so next time you get an outbreak you’ll know what the cause may be and how you can help to fix it. Firstly though, what is face mapping?Face mapping is an ancient Chinese and Ayurvedic practice that links different “zones” of the face (eg cheeks, chin, forehead) to different organs or glands in the body. The theory is that when there is an imbalance or toxicity in the body (in one of the different organs), it can manifest as pimples in the corresponding zone on the face. What are the different zones and what do pimples in these areas mean? The foreheadIf you often find yourself battling pimples in this area, it could be an indicator of digestive issues. Take a closer look at your diet, up the fibre and make sure you're staying hydrated too. Cutting back on alcohol, sugar and processed foods and incorporating more fruits and veggies could help clear up those forehead blemishes. Be sure to chew food well and take probiotics too.Between the browsBlemishes between the brows can be the sign of an overloaded liver. Liver issues can be indicative of sleep deprivation, heightened emotions (stress, sadness, anger, worry), or an excess of sugar, fats or alcohol in your diet. Your lymphatic circulation may also be stagnant and could use a little boost so try starting your morning with a hot water with lemon, drink plenty of fluids throughout the day, decrease your intake of spicy foods, alcohol, dairy, and sorry to say it, coffee too! And up the essential fatty acids, omega 3 and 6 in your diet, avocado and olive oil on your salad will help. Finally rest up, like you, your liver needs plenty of time to rest and recuperate.TemplesThe corners of the forehead, by the temples represent the kidneys.Lack of sleep, a poor diet and dehydration impacts our kidney function. Another factor may be a mineral deficiency, specifically iron too. To help, take proactive steps to support the kidneys, including decreasing stress, consuming enough fluids (spring water, coconut water, herbal tea, hydrolytes!), making sure you get enough sleep, also be mindful of your diet (eat ample amounts of fruits and vegetables and try to stay away from too much sodium.CheeksIf you notice pimples frequently appearing on your cheeks, it could indicate respiratory issues or allergies, since this area is linked to your lungs. The most common food triggers are dairy, soy, gluten, processed sugar and alcohol – try to eliminate these groups for a month to see how your body reacts with the change and replace with leafy green goodness. Also, pay attention to the air quality in your environment, as pollutants can wreak havoc on your skin.JawlineBreakouts in this area are often linked to hormonal fluctuations, particularly in women. It's not uncommon to experience these pimples around your menstrual cycle. However, persistent acne along the jawline might also be connected to polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) or digestive problems so you might want to get a blood test so that your doctor can get a better understanding of your hormonal levels. This will also help to determine how well your thyroid is functioning too.If you find you do get hormonal breakouts, there are many things you can do to help. Try eliminating caffeine (ok this might be a big ask, so at least try to cut it down), as well as cutting out processed sugar, dried fruit, bread, wine, diary, white flour, gluten, soy, fried foods, peanut butter and fruits like grapes and bananas (high sugar content). Eating a diet rich in omega-3 foods will instead be very beneficial, as will managing stress levels. Taking vitamin D3 supplements and getting regular exercise and adequate sleep can work wonders for bringing your hormones back to their natural balance as well!ChinIf you are prone to pimples on your chin, it could be related to your stomach. Just be sure to step up your fibre intake, avoid hydrogenated fats and processed sugar and try to be vigilant with the times you eat (no eating dinner just before bedtime!)NoseGetting pimples on your nose can be linked to your heart and can sometimes indicate high blood pressure, so get your blood pressure checked if you’re concerned. Look into ways of lowering your cholesterol too like replacing “bad fats” with “good fats” such as Omegas 3 and 6 found in nuts, avocados, fish and flax seed. You may also have a Vitamin B deficiency so consider a vitamin supplement and try to avoid spicy foods.Tip: Massage the area around your nose to improve circulation. While face mapping can provide insights into your pimples underlying causes, it’s essential to adopt some general habits for maintaining healthy skin too. Here are a few tips to get you started: Keep skin beautifully cleansed If we don’t cleanse (and exfoliate) out skin our pores can become clogged with dead skin cells, excess oil and dirt. When a pore gets clogged, it provides the perfect environment for bacteria to thrive and pimples to form! So be sure to keep your face clean by washing it twice a day with a gentle cleanser suitable for your skin type and exfoliate at least once a week. Adopt healthy skincare habits Your skincare routine and habits can play a significant role in the appearance of pimples. Harsh or irritating products can disrupt the skin’s natural balance, leading to inflammation and breakouts. While cleansing and exfoliating is imperative, over-washing or over-exfoliating can strip away essential oils, prompting your skin to produce more sebum as a defence mechanism. Use natural products free of harsh irritants and adopt a healthy daily skincare routine. Don’t pick or squeeze your pimples! As tempting as it may be, avoid picking or popping your pimples, as it can lead to scarring and more breakouts. Eat a balanced diet Studies suggest there is a link between diet and pimples. Consuming sugary and processed foods may increase insulin levels, leading to increased sebum production and acne formation. Additionally, dairy products and foods rich in saturated fats have also been associated with blemish breakouts. Therefore maintaining a balanced diet rich in an array of colourful fruits and veggies can promote overall skin health. Stay hydrated Drink enough water (and herbal tea) consistency throughout the day to keep skin hydrated and flush out those unwanted toxins. Manage stress Stress can be a big indicator of unwanted breakouts. Try and find ways to manage stress. Exercise daily, even if only for a brisk walk, practice meditation, indulge in a good book, relax and listen to your favourite music or simply engage in activities you enjoy that allow you to switch off from stress. Get enough sleep I know we say this time and time again, and I need to practice what I preach, but sleep is SO important, it’s the second most important thing after water. Sleep is not only a time for our body to recoup, but the time that our skin repairs and regenerates too. So as hard as it may be sometimes or impossible if you have a heavy workload, try and put that laptop down, turn off the TV or stop scrolling through Facebook for an evening, and get that quality sleep your body needs and deserves. Just remember your face is a little like a mirror reflecting what’s going on inside your body! By understanding the principles of face mapping you can get a better understanding of your overall health! By paying attention to the specific location of your pimples, you can address any underlying issues. Remember clear skin is not just about how you care for it topically, it’s about nourishing from within too!Want to learn more about the type of pimples you have and how to treat them? Click here. 10 steps to radically reduce pimples overnight

by Jo Boyden on Oct 06 2021
Dealing with spots can be frustrating. Just as you think you’ve beaten those blemishes, along pops up more! Well, it is possible to radically reduce their appearance overnight, you just need to follow these 10 simple steps, according to the experts at BC. Use a warm compress then pop ice on your pimpleApply a warm compress to the problem area or steam your face to bring your blemish to the surface. Then use a cold compress or ice, as this will help to decrease inflammation, reducing redness, size and visibility of the spot. Don’t pick that pimpleAs tempting as it can be, and I’m sure we’ve all been there, you should never, ever pick at your pimple as this will only do damage to your skin. Why? Because it can spread the area of bacteria, creating more blemishes and trauma to your skin, which in turn leads to inflammation, infection, and potentially even scarring. Picking your pimple can also result in it taking much longer than usual for it to disappear, rather than overnight like you are wanting!Watch what you eatSadly, there are particular foods that can exacerbate blemishes so if you want your spots to do one, make sure you eliminate them from your diet! Avoid cow’s milk and whey protein as they can be known to aggravate acne and try to stick to a low sugar diet as yes sadly that chocolate bar or delicious cupcake can be a cause of a sudden breakout.Make sure your skincare features the following blemish fighting ingredientsWhile there are 3 key ingredients to look out for when searching for that overnight miracle product; Benzoyl peroxide to kill acne-causing bacteria. Salicylic acid to help exfoliate and unclog pores Retinol to help boost cell turnover, prompting cells to shed and preventing them from clogging. If you are prone to blemishes and you want to keep them under control, you really need to be armed with skincare featuring 6 key ingredients: Salicylic Acid, Glycolic Acid, Benzoyl Peroxide, Retinol, Charcoal/Clay and Hyaluronic Acid. For more information on the benefits and effects of these ingredients and the best products to use click here. And use a good spot treatment for those pop-up pimples! While there is no way to get rid of a pimple in 5 minutes you can see huge improvements in a matter of hours by immediately treating it with a topical spot treatment rich in Salicylic Acid. Salicylic acid is very potent when it comes to getting rid of blemishes. By applying this spot attacking ingredient directly to the problem area, immediately removes excess oil and dead skin cells from the surface of the skin, meaning it effectively unclogs pores while simultaneously reducing any infection, swelling and redness. The team at BC can’t recommend the following skin saviours enough. Medicalia spot treatment This potent professional-grade targeted treatment diminishes follicular build-up, controls bacteria, and reduces inflammation with noticeable improvement in skin healing. It infuses skin with high performing ingredients including; Salicylic Acid, Glycolic Acid Mucor Meihei, Phytic Acid, and Sea Whip to effectively control, combat, and clear blemishes and acne lesions. What’s more it effectively decreases the risk of scarring and prevents post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. “This product is fantastic - have used this on random spots which appear and they always go away after using this product for a couple of days in a row. Highly recommended!” Natasha M Phytomer Oligopur Blemish Target GelThis blemish treatment gel dries and corrects, targeting blemishes with precision. It rapidly improves the skin's appearance, significantly reducing spots overnight. “This is an amazing blemish gel! I'm 37 and still get a few monthly breakouts. The Phytomer Blemish Gel works almost overnight, or over the course of the day as you can apply it over make up without worrying that it will show or mess up your foundation or powder. It doesn't dry you out and absorbs quickly.” Leanne Pevonia SpaTeen Blemish-B-GoneCombining both organic Benzoyl Peroxide with organic Salicylic Acid, this spot treatment radically heals blemishes while counteracting bacteria, as well as preventing future breakouts. Phew.“This is the BEST spot treatment that I have ever tried. I use it once at night and once in the morning. It totally took care of my breakouts. I can carry it in my bag with no problems, and it is easy to use. I’m hooked!” Ella W Tie your hair backKeep your hair off your face as the natural oil from your hair can touch your face and worsen the pimple. Make sure you remove your makeup at the end of the day!Whether you’re prone to the odd spot or suffer from all out acne, you’ll soon see that sleeping with a face full of makeup can result in a bigger breakout of blemishes. Eek! Makeup, unfortunately, clogs pores, and when your pores are blocked, your skin can’t breathe, and therefore it can’t regenerate. The oil in your pores builds-up and transform itself into spots. Fact. So make sure you always remove your makeup before bed with a good makeup remover! We love Vie Collection’s Micellar Water. It literally purifies, conditions and cleanses your complexion in one easy step thoroughly removing makeup from your lips, eyes and face. “All makeup removal products I have purchased, has always broke me out. So this is just what I was looking for. This product does leave your facial area's feeling well hydrated, nourished, and well cleansed” SophiaFor more information on sleeping in makeup and what it really does to our skin, click here. And do use a blemish busting cleanser before bedDon't ignore the power of a good cleanser formulated with some of the 6 key ingredients. Using your cleanser religiously will not only treat the pimples you do have, but prevent future emergencies. We highly recommend thoroughly cleansing your skin with one of these blemish busting cleansers, before zapping that zit with your spot treatment. Pevonia Clarigel Exfoliating CleanserExfoliating cleansers are perfect for blemish prone skin, as they help reduce breakouts by removing excess dead skin cells and unclogging pores. Pevonia’s Clarigel Exfoliating Cleanser combines Salicylic Acid and Citric Acid with Jojoba, Soapwort, Triclosan and Grapefruit Oil, to gently exfoliate skin’s surface as well as deeply penetrate the pores, decreasing microbe growth and calming inflammation. “I bought this product after being “prescribed” it by my beauty therapist for my mild adult acne. Firstly, the scent is light and non-intrusive, which is a huge plus. I also like that it contains both manual (small grains) chemical (citric acid) exfoliating properties. It helps to make my skin feel clean, smooth and prepared for moisturising. After a week or so I noticed a HUGE improvement in my breakouts.” Leah Medicalia Clarifying CleanserIn general, foaming cleansers are also great for oily and acne-prone skin, specifically because of their pore penetrating capabilities. If you want to get rid of blemishes or excess oil/sebum fast, you need a cleanser that can go deep in your pores and get rid of the debris without too much effort. We LOVE Medicalia’s Clarifying Cleanser. Specifically created for those with breakout prone and sensitive/oily skin, it’s formulated with both Salicylic and Lactic acids (so we know that’s a good thing!) Its potent foaming suds work very quickly to eliminate surface bacteria, toxins, impurities and makeup while combatting inflammation too! “I have used this cleanser for over 15 years now and it is just awesome! I used to suffer from acne and this cleanser helped no end and without drying my skin out!” Bec Change your pillowcaseI know we all change our pillowcases but do we do it frequently enough? Keeping your pillowcase clean and we are talking about changing it every 3-4 days, is a top beauty secret! This is because they have a build-up of oils, dirt, and sweat from daily use (yuck) which means they can harbor bacteria and in turn become a breeding ground for blemishes, as well as exacerbating them! Go to bed in a relaxed state and get your 8-9 hours of beauty sleep!I’ve said this many a time and for good reason. Stress and lack of sleep induce the hormone cortisol, which triggers our skin to produce more sebum or oil. This increase of oil can then clog pores and in turn not only exacerbate the blemish you are wanting gone by morning but can also lead to even more breakouts. And yes, we know what we are saying isn’t as simple as it sounds, especially when many of us are dealing with work, kids, home-schooling, and lockdown, but from personal experience, I do highly recommend having a relaxing mineral bath before bed. Little instantly reduces stress quite like it. I LOVE Phytomer’s Oligomer Well Being Sensation Essential Minerals Relaxing Bath. It’s a lightly foaming, ultra-relaxing fragranced bath enriched with Oligomer – a partially sodium reduced seawater concentrate that contains all of the remineralizing properties of seawater – to strengthen and restore the skin while releasing all pent-up tension in the body. Amazing stuff right? Then either meditating for a few minutes, I love the Calm app, OR playing soothing sounds. This can have a profound effect on your mental state, significantly reducing stress and leading to blissful slumber.
