13 skincare mistakes habits that are ageing you

13 skincare habits that are ageing you

by Jo Boyden on Sep 16 2020
Let's face it, we are all on the quest to radiant, youthful skin and many of us will invest both time and money perfecting our daily beauty routine, but there are still a number of mistakes or bad habits should I say, that we are likely doing daily that can and will make us look older than our years! Eek.So read on to find out what they are, and if you are currently committing any of them, you know to stop now! Not updating your skincare as your skin changes You might have been loyal to the same moisturiser for many years but sadly the skincare you've used in your 20's really won't cut it in your 30's, 40's and beyond. This is because as we age our skin's needs dramatically change. Skin becomes thinner, drier, more sensitive, and loses elasticity as collagen and elastin start to deplete, while fine lines and wrinkles start to form. Therefore anti-ageing skincare rich in ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, collagen, and vitamin C become essential. For more info on this read about the top 5 skincare ingredients as recommended by the experts and adjust your products accordingly. Going to bed with makeup on Well here's one you've heard many a time before! Right? From a few too many wines to being just plain old exhausted, sometimes it hard to peel yourself off your bed to go and remove your makeup but remove your makeup you must!Cleansing your face especially at night to remove not only your makeup but any remnants of the days sweat, dirt and grime is imperative for healthy skin. Not removing your makeup means your skin is unable to regenerate effectively while you sleep, pores clog, and fatigue (ageing!) signs start to appear. For a fantastic makeup remover which effectively melts away makeup and grime with minimum effort try Phytomer's Doux Contour Eye and Lip Waterproof Makeup Remover. Combining the effectiveness of an oil (a trio of oils in fact) and the gentleness of a lotion, this ultra-hydrating makeup remover, eradicates even the most stubborn of lips and eye makeup fast!To read more about sleeping in makeup and what it really does to our skin click here. Skipping on your moisturiser It's that time of the month and a few pesky pimples have reared their ugly head, or you are often prone to adult acne or simply suffer from oily skin, so think it best to lay off the moisturiser which must be exacerbating the issue right? Wrong. While you are likely not alone in thinking lathering up on moisturiser seems counterproductive, everyone, no matter what your skin type or concern, needs to apply a moisturiser daily! This is because moisturiser maintains skin hydration throughout the day and therefore assists in fighting premature fine lines and wrinkles too. In fact, applying moisturiser will greatly reduce your chance of developing extreme dryness, skin sensitivity, or oiliness! Why? Dehydrated skin can lead to issues like inflammation, premature skin ageing, and even breakouts. When your skin becomes dry, your body responds by making more oil! And we all know excess oil can clog pores leading to more of those darn pesky pimples. When searching for the right moisturiser for your skin type they do tend to be categorised by skin concern so you just need to research and find the right one for your skin's needs. Just be sure to opt for lighter moisturisers by day, especially in the warmer months, and richer creams at night. For oily skin types, we highly recommend Phytomer's Oligopur Hydra Matifying Control Cream. It's an ultra-light cream that controls oil and breakthrough shine throughout the day. No shine, no greasy feeling, no heaving feeling! If your skin is prone to pimples try Phytomer Acnipure Blemish Solution Fluid, it's a lightweight gel-cream that fights acne without clogging pores or irritating skin. It also helps eliminate shine, diminishes the appearance of blemishes, and prevents future breakouts!! Wearing SPF only during the summer Hands down the no. 1 contributor to skin ageing is skipping your SPF.Yes, it's easy to remember to apply it when you're headed to the beach, or out and about on holiday, but so many of us skip this vital step in our everyday lives and not because we are necessarily lazy but because we don't understand the long term affect not wearing it will have on our skin! Being exposed to UV rays will make your skin age quicker, creating fine lines, wrinkles, sunspots, and more...Applying sunscreen daily all through the year will assist in keeping skin looking younger. Just remember the higher the factor the better especially in the warmer months. Thinking that the SPF in your makeup is enough to protect your skin Unless your makeup has an SPF factor of 30 or above it's unlikely to ward off premature ageing if worn alone. This is because the majority of makeup will protect against UVB rays but won't block UVA rays which is what causes skin damage. Layering your skin with a high factor SPF moisturiser and then foundation will give you the best chance of maintaining skin's youthful appearance, but if you are in love with your daily moisturiser which doesn't contain sun protection, still use it and then apply a lightweight SPF like the ELES Luminous Defence Brightening Day Protection SPF 50. Not only does it protect skin against the sun’s harmful rays, it also helps prevent discolouration while diminishing existing dark spots and calming and brightening your complexion at the same time!Still be sure you use a foundation with SPF for that extra protection and coverage though, as chances are when you apply sunscreen, you'll skip vital spots that you won't do with your foundation. The ELES best-selling Liquid Powder Mineral Foundation SPF15 is an institution. It's a silky, mineral-enriched liquid formula with broad spectrum sun protection that literally glides on to skin and sets to a soft powder finish. Loved by everyone who tries it you won't be disappointed! Focusing only on Wrinkles While we are all concerned about fine lines and wrinkles as we age, dark spots and pigmentation can actually give our complexion a dull, devitalised and in turn much older appearance too! In fact, dark spots and uneven skin tone can make us look 10 years older! So if you suffer from hyperpigmentation ensure you introduce products specifically to help with this like concern. We promise it'll positively impact your complexion and protect your skin too. Try Vie Collection's Mela White Radiance Brightening Essense, a triple-action daily cream that effectively acts against dark spots, free radicals, and UV. The results will speak for themselves. Rubbing Your Eyes The area around your eyes is the most delicate on your face, fact. When we are tired it's easy to fall into the trap of rubbing our eyes, or when applying eye makeup with precision. We've all been guilty of pulling at our eyes I'm sure, but tugging, rubbing or pulling at your eye area can cause tiny blood vessles to break resulting in dark circles that make you look tired All. Of. The. Time. Instead, start applying an anti-ageing eye cream morning and night pronto! I am currently loving Vie Collection's Chrono Eyes Puffiness-Dark Circles Wrinkles Cream. It's a beautifully fine cream enriched with moisturising ingredients to nourish the eye area while reversing puffiness, dark circles and wrinkles! Seriously! Ignoring Your Neck and decolletage Oh, the forgotten area! And the area of your skin which can actually age you the most! Exposed to sunlight just as much as your face, if your neck and decolletage aren't cared for daily or protected with SPF, they can end up crepey and wrinkly so much earlier than they should! Whatever you do for your face you should do for your neck and decolletage too. There are neck and chest specific products you can use, I personally use Pevonia's Age Correction Rapid Restore Neck and Chest religiously, it's a 2 in 1 serum and cream which hydrates, nourishes refines and brightens skin for a more youthful appearance while smoothing wrinkles too! But there is also nothing wrong with using your daily moisturiser or a hydrating body cream instead! Just start doing it now! Avoiding exfoliators It's not just fine lines and wrinkles that make you look older, having a dull uneven skin tone can easily add years to your face as well!As we age our skin's natural ability to shed dead cells declines, so without weekly exfoliation skin can become uneven, dull and lacklustre. This is why exfoliation is so imperative, and not a step that should be ignored. Many people are scared of exfoliation because they think their skin is too sensitive, and it will just aggravate an existing issue, but that's where natural enzyme exfoliators can be the answer. Both Phytomer's Vegetal Exfoliant with Natural Enzymes and Pevonia's Enzymo Spherides Peeling Cream are formulated with natural enzymes which basically melt away dead cells so no scrubbing is needed. Just remember removing dead skin cells helps your skin properly absorb moisturiser which in turn keeps fine lines and dehydration at bay, as well as brightening skins radiance. Now, who wouldn't want that!! Or simply going overboard with exfoliating If you tend to sway the other way and love to exfoliate your skin a little too much i'm here to tell you stop it now! Over exfoliating can actually slow cell turnover, cause chronic skin irritation and inflammation which can lead to accelerated ageing. Stick to exfoliation once a week for the best results. If you ilke to use an exfoliator with grains or microbeads but skin tends to be a little on the sensitive side give Pevonia's Gentle Exfoliating Cleanser a go. it’s great for those who love physical exfoliators with granules but want to steer clear of facial scrubs which could be a little harsh on the skin. It gently polishes your complexion with its unique creamy yet granular texture, formulated with jojoba beads, saponaria and chamomile, revealing a softer, smoother and brighter complexion every time! And in the month of September if you purchase Pevonia Vitamin C Complexe (the perfect skin-brightening summer serum) you'll receive a full size Gentle Exfoliating Cleanser for FREE Not drinking enough water As I'm sitting here writing this, I can hold my hands up and say today so far I've only drunk 2 glasses of water when I should have in fact consumed at least a litre by now! Yes, it's fact, water, or lack of should I say is a real skin ager!! And I know I must practice what a preach! The thing is I do, but some days I will admit it's easy to forget! And when I do, I get cross with myself as I can see it in my skin! It's drier, duller and devitalised. This is because drinking 'enough' water helps the body to flush out toxins while increasing blood flow to the skin which gives it an even tone and dewy appearance! And dewy skin equals youthful skin after all!Not a huge fan of water? Try a good herbal tea instead. Extreme water temperatures How many of us are guilty of indulging in a hot shower or simply washing our faces with water set to a high temp. But really for best and healthy results we should be washing with lukewarm water. This is because extreme water temperatures will strip healthy natural oils from your skin quickly, making it dry and therefore age much faster. Water that's too hot can also dilate your capillaries leading to spider veins. Not getting enough sleep....when you could get more If I had a dollar for every time I said to my husband I must get to bed early tonight because I need more sleep and am fed up of looking old and tired, I'd be a rich woman. While they say practice what you preach, I am a testament that not getting enough sleep (when I could indeed fit in another 1-2 hours a night (darn netflix!) literally does age you.Poor sleep is quite literally to blame for premature ageing, dermatitis, eczema, acne, loss of collagen and more! Scary right? So let's make a pact and try for that 8 hours + we really do need nightly. Now be sure to follow our advice to be sure you slow down the signs of ageing naturally!
8 expert tips for the ultimate spring skincare routine

8 expert tips for the ultimate spring skincare routine

by Jo Boyden on Sep 09 2020
Spring is well and truly in the air, but with a change in season, comes a change in our skincare concerns, so it is important to now adjust your daily routine just as you would your wardrobe. From switching up your diet, upping your exercise and updating your skincare products, it’s time to put some pizzazz back into your skin after the cold, winter months. Not sure where to start though? We've got you covered. Read on for the best skincare tips and products on how to achieve truly radiant spring skin, as recommended by the beauty experts at BC.1. Exfoliate away dry winter skinPolish away post winter dullness to reveal a layer of fresh new skin. It's best to opt for gentle exfoliators and fruit peels that you can use once or twice a week. Follow with a moisturising mask as this will also aid your skin's recovery.I love Pevonia's Gentle Exfoliating Cleanser, it's great for those who love physical exfoliators with granules but want to steer clear of facial scrubs which could be a little harsh on the skin. It gently polishes your complexion with its unique creamy yet granular texture, formulated with jojoba beads, saponaria and chamomile, revealing a softer, smoother and brighter complexion every time! However, if your preference is for an exfoliator free of microbeads or grains, one of my absolute favourites is the Phytomer Vegetal Exfoliant with Natural Enzymes. It combines natural vegetable enzymes with vitamin E to eliminate impurities, blackheads, dead cells and toxins without scrubbing the skin. I promise you your skin will be smooth, soft and radiant after one application!Follow with one of my go to masks Pevonia's Ageless Skin Collagen Mask. Formulated with collagen, squalane and shea butter, it deeply penetrates the skin for outstanding hydrating and skin-plumping results.2. Go lighter with your moisturiserIn winter, we tend to reach for the richer, heavier creams in hope they'll combat our dry, dehydrated skin, but swapping your daily moisturiser for something a little lighter is key for spring, this is because our skin retains more water during the warmer months so heavier formulations can lead to clogged pores and pesky pimples! It's important though to find the right balance between nourishing and light lotions or creams to complement your daily regime and boost your spring glow. We recommend a hyaluronic acid or water-based formula to add dewiness to your complexion but not over saturate your skin. This is because they help achieve hydration from within the skin as opposed to just sealing in moisturiser from the outside. Pevonia's Age Defying Marine Collagen Cream is one of my all-time favourites. It's light and silky and you can feel and see it immediately replenishing moisture on application restoring supple, soft and glowy skin every time!3. Up the SPFWhile a moisturiser with an SPF 30 is fine for winter, upping your SPF factor to 50 can make a huge difference in spring as we are exposed to higher UV rays in the warmer months. By using a high factor sunscreen daily, you will not only decrease your risk of skin cancer but also increase your change for healthier, smoother and more youthful skin.My go-to in the spring and summer months is ELES Luminous Defence Brightening Day Protection SPF 50, not only does it protect skin against the sun's harmful rays it's also helps prevent discolouration while diminishing existing dark spots, all whilst calming and brightening your complexion!Or why not, like me, double up and use SPF in both your skincare and makeup! I can't recommend enough the ELES Luminous CC Cream 20 (which also happens to be a best-seller on BC!) it's a lightweight, oil-free, colour correcting cream with broad spectrum protection which quite literally diminishes imperfections, while brightening skin in one fell swoop!4. Prioritise Vitamin CIn the warmer months, when the sun is shining, UVB radiation is at its strongest, so it’s important to not only prioritise SPF but Vitamin C in our skincare too! Vitamin C when applied topically not only boosts our skin's natural tolerance to the sun, but it is able to help control the formation of pigmentation as well as significantly lightening its appearance too! So make sure you are armed with a great vitamin C serum or cream. I can't speak more highly of Pevonia's C Complexe with Oxyzomes. Two pumps and radiant looking skin instantaneously.BONUS: In the month of September if you purchase this product, you'll receive a FREE full size Pevonia Gentle Exfoliating Cleanser too!5. Use eye cream daily...if you don't alreadyWith more time spent in the sun over the warmer months, it's important to understand you're be at higher risk of developing fine lines and wrinkles around the delicate eye area. To minimise this, make sure you incorporate an eye cream or gel into your daily skincare routine. We highly recommend Pevonia's “C” Evolutive Eye Gel to hydrate and protect our eyes. This soothing and cooling gel with high-tech time-release spherulites delivers protective and decongesting benefits to the delicate eye zone all day long. What’s more it's made with an outstanding trio of ingredients including Vitamin C, Hyaluronic Acid and Ginkgo Biloba so perfect for spring skin.6. Add pore perfecting and mattifying products to your routineFor many, the transition into spring can leave you with more shine and oil production then you bargained for. Therefore, your spring skincare line-up should include products that will help your skin shine the right way, by mattifying areas of your face that could become overly oily. Try introducing a primer to keep makeup in place throughout the day. ELES's Pore Perfecting Face Primer is an oil free primer which combats shine, absorbs excess oil and reduces the appearance of my pores! As a result, my foundation is a breeze to apply and remains fresh and flawless throughout the day! So, if your skin tends to be on the oily side give this product a go!7. Transition to a lighter foundationIt's best to steer clear of the thicker, heavier foundations you might have been accustomed to over winter as the heat and humidity bought about by the warmer months can lead to sweat and clogged skin, potentially causing breakouts. Switching to lighter products like a BB Cream or mineral powder foundation will balance out the extra oil production and leave your skin looking healthier.I can't get enough of ELES's best-selling Liquid Powder Mineral foundation. It's light silky formulation quite literally glides onto your skin and then sets to a soft powder finish, providing beautifully natural coverage with no shine! If however your skin tends to be more on the drier side and it's more of a dewy glow you're hoping for try ELES's Mineral Sheet Tint you won't be disappointed!8. Facial mists will be your friendAs the weather heats up and skin dries out, make sure you are armed with a good hydrating facial mist. They not only cool the skin but keep it hydrated throughout the day. We love the convenient Pevonia Phyto Aromatic Mist, it's a must-have for its calming and nourishing properties.
Beauty COllective - Spring ready

Spring ready? 5 body prep tips for the sunny season

by Jo Boyden on Sep 08 2020
Spring is finally here! Hallelujah! But the change of season does mean it's time to get our bodies prepped for the warmer months ahead as it's away with the heavy jumpers and long trousers and out with the skirts, shorts, and swimmers!During the winter months many of us I'm sure have been guilty of neglecting our bodies just a little which includes not buffing, exfoliating or moisturising sufficiently. After all, we've been covered from head to toe for many months now, so skin texture is likely on the dry, scaley, and what's for lack of a better word – lumpy side! Yes, that smooth, supple skin we once donned, may be a thing of the past but with a few key products and a little love, we can have it back to its former glory in next to no time. So read on to find out what steps you need to take to perfect your body, and the products that really will work for you this season. Try dry body brushing Ever tried dry body brushing? I'm a firm believer in it! But, in order to notice its impact on your skin, you need to do it daily. Regular body brushing stimulates blood flow and circulation and helps the body detoxify itself. As a result, it helps to tighten the skin and reduce cellulite! Give it a whirl before you have a shower or bath by simply brushing your body in upward movements towards your heart. Give your skin a perfecting polish Yes, it's time to get your buffing cloth out, load it with a healthy dose of body scrub, and give your body a much needed and well-deserved skin polish! After all, a good old fashioned scrub is your ticket to smooth, spring skin.Apply your scrub to wet skin (use warm water) and gently massage all over the body in a circular motion. Then rinse and clean thoroughly with gentle shower gel. By exfoliating the skin it will eliminate any dead skin cells as well as dry flakey skin, making way for silky smooth skin.I've personally tried many a body scrub in my time but can not go past Pevonia's Silky Skin Body Scrub. I'm not lying when I say after just one application my skin is so silky soft and smooth. Moisturise daily Using a good body moisturiser, lotion on dry oil can help heal dry skin as well as protect it from seasonal factors. Applying your body cream after your shower or bath is the best time as your skin is still moist and the product is able to trap some of that water still on your body and use it to further hydrate your skin. Hands down my favourite body moisturiser (and a global best seller!) is Pevonia's Dry Oil Body Moisturiser. It literally feels like silk on application, is not greasy at all (despite it being an 'oil') and absorbs immediately, quite literally nourishing every inch of your body. Formulated with Lavender and Chamomile the scent it heaven and it renders skin soft, supple with a healthy glow. This product does not disappoint, and the reviews speak for themselves. If you are however more of a cream lover, I also highly recommend for spring Phytomer's Oleocreme Ultra-moisturising Body Milk, its an ideal combination of the comfort of a cream and the lightness of a body milk, and its “anti-thirst” formula means it is super hydrating but not too rich! Plus it absorbs very quickly making way for smooth, visibly plumped skin. Slather on the anti-cellulite cream Truth be told while there is no ‘quick fix’ when it comes to cellulite, if you are armed with a good topical anti-cellulite treatment and are vigilant about its daily application, you can significantly reduce your cellulite’s appearance. After trialing many anti-cellulite creams in my time, my firm favourite is definitely Phytomer's Resurfaslim Peel and Slim Cream, and for good reason. It took me about 10 days of religious application morning and night, to notice a real change in my skin. By 4 weeks I felt slimmer, and my cellulite had definitely reduced! Especially the appearance of dimpling around my upper thighs! I have my next bottle at the ready and can't wait to see the results in a month's time! Get your glow on If you've neglected to exfoliate, moisturise and buff your body over the winter months I'm betting that your skin hasn't had a tan for a while either. With the pins making an appearance once again it's time to get your glow on with a good self-tanner! Just be sure to steer clear of spray and mousse self-tans though as these can be slightly drying for the skin. Instead, try a nourishing self-tanning cream. It will not only create that natural spring glow but also nourish your dry post-winter skin.Try Phytomer's Sun Radiance Self Tanning Cream, it's white satin texture makes it so easy to apply without leaving any streaks, it quickly absorbs into the skin and within a few hours, you'll have the most perfect long-lasting natural tan! I promise!Follow these steps and you'll well and truly be beach body ready!
9 things you need to stop doing to your skin now

9 things you need to stop doing to your skin now!

by Jo Boyden on Aug 19 2020
You might well think you are following protocol and doing all the right things for your skin – applying SPF daily, using the best products for your specific needs, drinking your two litres of water a day, exercising but not too excessively, getting enough shut-eye… the list goes on, yet still, your skin isn’t where you want it to be, but why? Most of us spend each day taking the right steps, all the while damaging our skin without even realising it! Read on to find out nine things you might be doing which could well be impacting your skin’s overall health; Touching your face If COVID-19 has taught me one thing, it’s to be vigilant about touch! And I have to admit I did not realise just HOW often I touched my face!! Eek.Each time you touch your face, you're exposing your skin to bacteria, so repeatedly touching it with your fingertips, resting your face on your hands, or simply rubbing your head can introduce dirt directly to the skin and in some cases cause pesky pimples and worse! So try to be more wary of your actions, and thoroughly clean your face with a good cleanser at the end of every day! Hitting the pantry at night! Yes it happens to the best of us! You’ve been healthy all week, diligently consuming your super foods but this evening you caved and hit the panty for those sugared treats, surely it’s not that big a deal? Unfortuantely it can be! This is because consuming sugar affects our bodies' collagen stores. Collagen is the magical protein that our bodies produce which helps our skin to remain supple and well, simply look younger. Unfortunately the sugary foods we consume break down both the collagen and elastin in our skin, causing dullness and wrinkles over time, so if it’s possible, it’s best to cut down sugar intake where you can, especially at night, which happens to be the worst possible time! There goes my late night feasts. Going to sleep with makeup on I’m sure we’ve all been guilty of having one too many in our time, or simply hopping into bed exhausted only to realise you haven’t removed your makeup and have little to no energy to get back up to cleanse your face, so to bed with a full face of makeup we go! But I can’t stress enough how failing to remove makeup at the end of every day is a major missed opportunity for your skin to be able to regenerate while you sleep! Not removing your makeup means the skin ceases to breathe freely, pores clog and fatigue signs start to appear. Two of my favourite makeup removers, which both effectively and effortlessly melts away the day's makeup and grime, are Phytomer’s Doux Contour Eye and Lip Waterproof Makeup Remover and ELES Cosmetic’s Transformation Cleansing Oil.Combining the effectiveness of an oil (a trio of oils in fact) and the gentleness of a lotion, Phytomer’s ultra-hydrating makeup remover, eradicates even the most stubborn of lips and eye makeup fast! While the ELES Transformation Oil literally melts away makeup with jojoba oil, safflower oil, olive oil, squalene and vitamin E! What’s more for the month of August when you purchase the Transformation Cleansing Oil, you’ll receive a set of 3 muslin cleansing cloths (for swift and easy removal) for Free!To read more about sleeping in makeup – what it really does to our skin click here. Not getting enough shut-eye If you are like me and one for being guilty of going to bed too late, or simply not getting enough sleep (we are talking the recommended 8 hours a night) know that your skin WILL suffer. This is because it affects the moisture levels in your skin, depleting them, as well as lowering your complexions pH levels, and when your skin’s pH levels drop, they create an imbalance which means your skin isn’t able to produce the moisture it needs, resulting in dry, lacklustre skin. It can also create unnecessary redness, leave skin uneven and even trigger breakouts. To understand more about what really happens to your skin while you sleep click here. Having a hot shower Ok, so no one in winter is going to say no to a hot shower right? It’s one of life’s little luxuries but it does come at a cost to your skin believe it or not. Unfortunately, hot water can strip the skin of its essential moisture and deplete its natural protective barrier which can lead to impairments in the skin’s moisture. We know you aren’t going to stop having those steamy showers of a morning but try and turn the heat down a little, limit shower time and ensure you replenish skin immediately after with a good hydrating moisturiser! I’m currently loving Phytomer’s Hydra Original Thirst Relief Melting Cream, it’s deliciously rich and delivers intense and lasting hydration to my skin! Not frequently changing your bedding We are accustomed to washing our clothes after every wear but why is it at the end of every day, we fall into bed without giving our sheets a second thought? Unfortunately clogged pores can occur when we don't wash our bedding weekly. This in turn can lead to blemishes and breakouts. Why? Because there is a build up of bacteria and oil on our sheets, especially pillowcases caused by sweat, saliva and dead skin cells. Yuck. Over exfoliating You are doing as you think is right and exfoliating your skin once or twice a week but could you be over exfoliating? Using exfoliators with AHA’s and BHA’s when it’s not necessary can cause your skin to become dehydrated and dry. If you notice you are developing dry patches or flaky skin you could well be over-doing it. This is why it's important to use the correct exfoliator for your skin type and always follow exfoliation with hydrating and moisturising creams. Spending too much time in front of a screen I know I speak for so many of us when it comes to too much screen time these days. Whether it be our laptop, tv, iphone or ipad, screen time does effect our skin and here’s why; All devices (now labeled the silent anti-agers of our generation!) emit ‘blue light’. This light creates a free radical that damages our DNA, by penetrating all the way to the dermis where our collagen and elastin live causing loss of firmness, increase in visible lines as well as inflammation and dark spots! Scary stuff. Your best defence? Try to cut down your time and use targeted skincare and makeup products!Using products containing iron oxide can help neutralize and repair blue light damage. Try Pevonia's Youth Renew Tinted Moisturiser or ELES Mineral Sheer Tint SPF 20.The skin naturally contains antioxidants. These are quickly damaged and depleted when exposed to free radicals. By applying a topical antioxidant containing Vitamins C and E you can assist in counteracting the damaging effecting of blue light. Try Medicalia's C Serum with Oxyzomes which protects and infuses the antioxidant deep within the skin for maximum anti-free radical benefits and collagen-boosting effects.I also love Pevonia's Stem Cells Phyto-Elite Intensive Cream. It is rich in Vitamins C, E, Marine Collagen and Retinol! It deeply repairs any damage caused to the skin, effectively minimising the most common signs of premature ageing. And if you purchase this cream in the month of August, you'll receive the full size matching Stem Cells Foaming Cleanser for Free! Using dirty makeup brushes Your makeup tools are meant to be washed. Besides bacteria, both brushes and sponges also accumulate dead skin cells and oil which can clog your pores leading to skin irritation and pesky pimples! Also if you apply your makeup with a dirty bush the end result can be a streaky and patchy complexion! Clean brushes definitely make for a smoother makeup application so get cleaning them at least once a week! For “green” and allergy-free brushes, opt for taklon bristle brushes, this smooth synthetic fibre is ideal for makeup application as it does not absorb or trap pigment, making it so much easier to keep clean too!

Skin Envy? 13 things people with flawless skin do daily

by Jo Boyden on Aug 13 2020
Waking up to a flawless skin can be easier than you think….if you live by a few simple steps that is. In fact, you are likely already doing some of them, you know the drill, drink plenty of water, get 9 hours of blissful sleep a night (yeah sure!), always wear your SPF and eat a whole lot of leafy veggies and fresh fruit, but what other things are women doing to ensure their best skin yet? From the products you really need in your skincare routine to a few lifestyle changes, here is the list of things people with flawless skin do every day; They use the right products for their skin's needsFirst things first, it’s important to understand your skin and its specific needs so you purchase products accordingly. From dry, devitalised skin to an acne-prone complexion, sensitive skin to premature aging, we all have a skin type. If you aren’t sure how to determine this, why not visit your local salon for a consultation, after all, achieving great skin is not about piling on the products, it’s about finding what will work best for you. They address their skin’s needs dailyJust to confuse things, while we might be a particular skin type, our complexions can alter daily dependant on a number of factors; how much sleep we’ve had, how healthy or unhealthy we’ve been, whether we are hormonal, to name a few, so it’s important to address our skin’s needs every day and slightly adjust our skincare routine accordingly. I know what my skin needs and have my skincare routine down pat but some days I’ll change my serum from my Pevonia C Complex to a hyaluronic rich concentrate because I know my skin needs that extra burst of hydration (I am personally in love with Pevonia’s Age Correction Intensifier Collagen & Myoxy Caviar), or at night I might opt to add in a nurturing face oil if my skin is feeling a little dry and devitalised, like Pevonia’s Vitaminic Concentrate, my skin is always soft and glowy the morning after! They follow the double cleanse crazeThe key to healthy skin is not only in your choice of skincare but in the way you remove the day’s build-up of grime and impurities too! Cleansing once will eradicate daily dirt and makeup, but if you double cleanse you’ll be ensuring your cleanest skin yet!The double cleanse method works on the principle that you firstly use a cleansing oil (we LOVE the ELES Transformation Cleansing Oil) or micellar water (if you are a lover of micellar water you simply must try Vie Collection’s Micellar water for face, eyes and lips), they will break down makeup, SPF and sebum on the surface of your skin. Then follow with a water-based cleanser, which will clean much deeper into the pores, removing any remaining sweat, bacteria and dead skin cells. The deeper cleanse will also allow your serum and moisturiser, as well as other night time leave-on products, to penetrate into your skin working their magic much more efficiently, giving your skin cells the best chance at regenerating for a plumper more youthful complexion by morning! They use a toner! Our skin tends to be naturally acidic, but the alkaline in cleansers can alter this, meaning skin has to work overtime to restore its balance. By using a toner daily after cleansing, will not only ensure any remnants (if there are any after your double cleanse that is!) are removed from your face but it’ll also restore your pH balance of your skin. They use serum dailyThese anti-aging and targeted elixirs are an imperative step in your daily skincare routine! Apply before your moisturiser for more targeted results. To learn more about why you need a serum and the best anti-ageing serums for every skin type click here. They exfoliate once a weekA good weekly exfoliation will break up dead surface skin cells and reveal a fresh glowy complexion every time, just remember though, too much exfoliation can be counterproductive! If your skin is a little on the sensitive side, exfoliation is still important just be sure to opt for a super gentle formula – we LOVE Pevonia’s Gentle Exfoliating Cleanser, it gently polishes your skin with its unique creamy, granular texture. But if granules scare you, we also highly recommend Phytomer’s Vegetal Exfoliant with Natural Enzymes. It’s a soft exfoliant for even the most sensitive or rosacea prone skin and uses natural enzymes to encourage cell turnover without scrubbing or irritating your skin. They understand what ingredients they need for their skinIt’s important to learn about your skin’s specific needs and then buy products to target those needs. By understanding what ingredients to look out for will honestly better your skin in the long run. To read about the top 5 ingredients as recommended by the experts click here. They love a good facial massageGiving yourself a weekly facial (or even better visiting your favourite salon or spa) can do wonders for your skin. It helps to not only release tension but also increase circulation and encourage lymphatic drainage for optimum skin detox. They practice calming techniquesStress is not only bad for your health but your skin too. Unfortunately, cortisol (the stress hormone) has the ability to break down collagen in the skin, the higher the stress, the more cortisol is produced and over time the skin’s ability to rebuild collagen will significantly decrease. So when you are feeling anxious or stressed try your hand at yoga or meditation or simply unwind to relaxation music. They stay activeWe all know exercise is of course great for our health and mental wellbeing but do we all practice what we preach? While exercise has been proven to help control weight, reduce risk of heart diseases, help our body manage blood sugar and insulin levels, decrease pain, and even delay the ageing of our cells! It can also improve our skin! This is because it helps to increase oxygen and blood flow to the skin. This neutralizes the free radicals that damage our skin. Exercise helps to cleanse the skin from the inside, which then radiates on the out! They eat healthilyWe’ve all heard of the saying we are what we eat right? Well what you ingest can definitely reflect on your skin. Just as you should look for specific ingredients to put on your face, make sure you eat specific ingredients too! For example blueberries are loaded with anthocyanins that strengthen the skin’s collagen matrix. They stay out of the sunWe all know wearing SPF daily is a necessity but those who really look after their skin have been known to credit being sun savvy as helping to keep skin radiant. We are talking minimal direct sun exposure. They ensure sunnies and hats are worn religiously, some even carry an umbrella!NB. The rays of the sun are an important source of vitamin D so it is still advisable to expose yourself to sunlight in the earlier hours of the day for at least 10 minutes. They take vitamin c every day.If you want to encourage flawless skin every day, ingesting vitamin c is a must (as is it to use topically!)Vitamin C aids to prevent ageing signs as well as enhance overall complexion, increasing collagen production and generally brightening skin. Most will take a vitamin C supplement as well as eat vitamin c rich foods including citrus fruits, strawberries, pineapple, kale and kiwis!

The top 5 skincare ingredients as recommended by the experts

by Jo Boyden on May 29 2020
In the pursuit of perfect skin so many of us will buy into the ‘latest’ and apparently ‘greatest’ skincare trends, the new and improved ingredients that promise to deliver eternal youth. But with trends forever evolving how are we supposed to differentiate between what actually works and what’ll likely be a passing fad? Thankfully beauty experts stand united when it comes to the top 5 powerhouse ingredients, the true skincare classics that have stood the test of time. You’ll likely be familiar with each and every one of these ingredients, but do you really know what it is they do?Read on to learn all there is to know about the skincare industries ‘top dogs’ and why they should become a constant in your skin’s daily life! RETINOL Hailed as the Holy Grail of the skincare world, retinol counteracts ageing like no other!A derivative of Vitamin A, this ‘superhero’ ingredient offers a multitude of benefits; From reducing the appearance of fine lines and preventing wrinkles, to correcting hyperpigmentation, reducing large pores and clearing acne, retinol also has the ability to speed cell turnover making cells function like that of a child! Crazy right?Perfect for those with sun damaged, dull and discoloured skin, those suffering from large pores and adult acne, or simply because ageing is a concern, we couldn’t recommend this ingredient more. But be sure to understand how and when to use it first.Try Pevonia’s Micro-Retinol Moisturiser, and find out for yourself what all the fuss is about!“This is the most beautiful cream I have ever used; light texture, non-greasy, non-shiny. Changes in my skin include smoothing of lines and crepe-skin areas, softening, hydrating and contouring, and reduced pigmentation. Some results were instantly visible and now after three weeks my skin just keeps improving. Now it appears luminous and more refined. It’s a surprise to see a brighter smoother complexion at my age, I am 60!” Annie HYALURONIC ACID Probably the most famous skincare ingredient of them all, and renowned as every beauty expert’s ‘must-have’, hyaluronic acid has the ability to instantly deliver supple, dewy skin. It binds moisture to skin cells to keep skin smooth, firm, plump, and undeniably radiant and thanks to its sponge-like effect, every molecule can hold 1,000 times its weight in water so when topically applied it’s like a burst of intense hydration to the skin. But this skincare-wonder doesn’t stop there, not only does it benefit those with dry, dehydrated skin, it’s also a must for anyone with signs of premature ageing. So be sure you include this in your daily routine if you suffer from a dry, devitalised complexion or if you are simply in need of gentle anti-aging skincare. We are hands down in awe of Pevonia’s new Hyaluronic Acid Hydra Serum, featuring one of the highest concentrations of hyaluronic acid on the skincare market!“I have just started using this serum and the results are already noticeable. My skin is so much more youthful! Smoother, plumper and visibly radiant! I couldn’t recommend more highly!!” Mary C GLYCOLIC ACID If your skin is looking a tad dull and devitalised and you’re forever coveting that ‘insta-glow’ Glycolic Acid is your answer. This super acid is a type of natural exfoliant derived from sugar cane, which dissolves the ‘glue’ that holds dead skins cells together. As dead skin cells shed, the new smoother, brighter and younger looking skin underneath is revealed.Made up of small molecules, it is also has the ability to penetrate deep within the skin, making it super effective for treating, blackheads, blemishes, oiliness, uneven texture, dullness and even fine lines! So if you have normal, combination and oily skin that’s looking far from radiant, Glycolic acid will be your saving grace. Try Pevonia’s Renewing Glycocides Cream, we promise you won’t regret it!“WOW, talk about overnight results! Minimizes my pores, smooths out my skin, and reduces redness. I’m not sure if it's supposed to do all those things, but it's been 2 months now since i've been using it every night and i LOVE this cream!” Sally O VITAMIN C The best of the best when it comes to topical anti-oxidants, Vitamin C has been around for donkey’s years and for very good reason! Recommended by every beauty expert, this notorious glow-getter not only brightens skin, lessening hyperpigmentation, it also increases collagen production (which diminishes with age) and protects skin against pollution and sun damage by effectively neutralising free radicals (which can wreak havoc by harming healthy skin cells as well as promoting premature ageing – we are talking fine lines, wrinkles, dark spots and more...)If you suffer from hyperpigmentation or dark spots or skin is lacking life and needs some serious brightening, vitamin c should be your go-to. We can’t recommend enough the Pevonia Vitamin C Complexe, it’s a firm favourite of ours!“This is a beautiful serum. You only require two pumps and the coverage is excellent. Radiant looking skin instantaneously. Definitely worth the investment.” Deborah W COLLAGEN PEPTIDES Collagen is technically a protein which naturally occurs in our bodies giving our skin strength and elasticity, as well as working to replace dead skin cells. However as we age our natural collagen levels begin to decline and the more collagen we lose, the more fine lines and wrinkles appear. Scary hey? This is where topical skincare solutions are an absolute must. By applying skincare formulated with collagen peptides, you can stimulate the synthesis of new collagen production and minimise the appearance of ageing. Sound good? To keep skin soft, supple and free of fine lines we are forever in love with Pevonia’s no. 1 global best-seller, the Age Correction Marine Collagen Cream.“I absolutely love this cream. It is a day cream and a night cream and it helps with my puffiness, lines, blemishes, skin tone, you name it! Totally amazing ❤” Anna H

Fun for all the family: 6 simple steps to the perfect at-home manicure

by Jo Boyden on May 07 2020
Who doesn’t love a manicure? Half an hour, to an hour of ‘you’ time to be pampered and preened, and at the end, you come away with fabulous looking fingertips! Sadly though, with social distancing still in place, that frequent visit to your nail salon isn’t an option for now, but it does make for the perfect time to master your DIY manicure skills!At-home manicures can still be a relaxing activity, as well as a lot of fun if you get your kids or whoever you might live with, involved. While you may not be able to give yourself or each other a gel manicure or a professional shellac, (best to leave those to the professionals) you can still try and recreate a full nail salon experience at home, it just takes a few simple steps and the right products.Read on for our step by step on how to perfect an at-home manicure;Step 1 - Remove old polishIf your nails are baring the remanence of regular polish, you simply need to remove it with a good polish remover, but if you’ve been sporting a gel or shellac manicure for some weeks now, a little more effort is involved – but still easy to do! Simply use a fine-grit nail file and very gently file the top coat of the gel, next pour some pure acetone into a bowl, and soak nails for three to five minutes. Finally use a birchwood stick or similar to gently remove the remaining gel. Alternatively, you can soak some gauze in acetone, apply to fingertips and wrap in aluminum foil for 15 minutes.Step 2 - Determine the best nail shape for youWhile there is no wrong nail shape so to speak, there are a couple of rules of thumb which you should follow when deciphering which nail shape would be best for you.If you like maintaining longer nails, it’s best to opt for an oval shape as this way your nails are less likely to snag. Oval nails also tend to be the most flattering as they create the illusion of slimmer, longer fingers no matter their size or shape. A more square shape tends to work best for short, neat nails, but just be aware that this can be the hardest nail shape to wear too, as it can make your hands appear stumpy! So your other option for short nails (even nail biters!) is rounded. It’s a simple shape, extending only slightly past your nail bed and in line with maintaining your nail’s natural shape.Step 3 – Trim, file and buff your nailsOnce you’ve decided on your perfect shape it’s time to get filing! If your nails are really long and you are vibing shorter nails this time around, it’s best to trim them slightly with nail clippers.See-sawing back and forth with your file can actually weaken the nail and cause it to split and/or peel. Instead file from the outer edges of your nail toward the center in one direction. Just make sure you use a good quality file. Finally, buff the tops and sides of your nails with a nail buffer. This is an important step as it’ll help create a smoother surface for polish application but it’ll also prevent the build-up of natural oils on your nails.Step 4 – Exfoliate your handsExfoliate hands, wrists, and forearms with a scrub that eliminates dead skin cells while replenishing moisture. I love Pevonia’s Silky Skin Scrub. Its creamy formula gently polishes away dead skin cells and impurities with jojoba beads, rosemary, sage, and allantoin. Unveiling smooth, radiant, and silky-soft skin. Heavenly.Step 5 – It’s time for some hand pampering! All hail the hand massage! – just because you’re not in the spa or at your favourite nail salon doesn’t mean you can’t be pampered for a minute or two or three! Even when my four year old daughter has a go at this step it’s honestly a little luxury, and she loves playing beauty therapist! Research has also proven that a hand massage can not only increase hand strength and elevate any aches and pains but also reduce feelings of stress and anxiety! Now first things first you want to indulge your hands and nails in the spa treat they deserve so choose wisely! I highly recommend Phytomer’s Oleocreme Ultra-Nourishing Hand Cream. Enriched with a blend of skin-loving ingredients, this luxurious treatment soothes, softens, and deeply nourishes hands. Also unlike many other hand creams, it absorbs super-fast to instantly condition hands and nails without leaving them sticky and slimy. To start your massage gently stroke your hand (or the hand of your mani-partner) to relax and warm it. Now take your cream and gently rub it between your hands to warm it up a bit, then start by rubbing it into your arm with long smooth motions from wrist to elbow, this is to warm up the muscles. Next, use your thumb to lightly rub the back of your wrist and hand applying moderate pressure as your thumb nears the wrist. Now move onto your fingers taking time to massage each finger individually. Give each finger a gentle twist in alternating direction then give a quick but not too firm full to finish. Repeat this for each finger and your thumbs. When you have finished focusing on each finger turn your hand over. Use your thumbs to apply pressure to your palm. Then interlock your fingers and slowly rotate your hands. Alternate directions and stretch it out. Finally, cup your hand around your forearm and gently move it all the way down the arm from the elbow to fingertips applying a little pressure.Once your pampering is complete, give each nail a quick swipe with nail polish remover to get rid of any oily residue.Step 6 – Apply your polishNow for the fun part! It’s time to polish!Firstly, it is important to invest in a polish that is not only long-lasting but healthy for your nails too. Look for “5-free” options which means it’s DBP, Toluene, Formaldehyde, Formaldehyde Resin, and Camphor free. ELES Cosmetics nail polishes are made with the best of Australian quality ingredients and have a 5-free professional patented formula which holds its colour and shine for days. They don’t require a base coat but you can still opt to apply one first if you wish. Now select your colour of choice – my forever favourite is the ELES Cosmetics Nail Polish in Alice in Wonderland, while my daughter is currently loving Some Like it Hot! On application be sure not to overload the brush with polish (you need just enough to cover the nail in one coat). Brush from cuticle to nail tip in as few strokes as possible, preferably three times only – one stroke down the middle of your nail, one on each side. For seamless coverage it’s best to apply two coats, however the longer you can wait between coats, the better. You can complete your manicure by applying a topcoat if you wish, this can protect your manicure and add a little extra shine.

What to gift your mum if you can’t be with her this Mother’s Day

by Jo Boyden on Apr 27 2020
Mother’s day is fast approaching, but with social distancing restrictions in place, this year’s special day might be looking a little different for many. Sadly that family brunch you had organised or your plan to whisk mum off for a facial is no longer possible, but it doesn’t mean you can’t surprise her with a drive by, organise a zoom get together or simply send her a beautiful gift, and I’m sure I can vouch for many of the mums out there in saying one gift I would LOVE right now is a little pampering treat to look forward to once this pandemic is over. After all, truly special gifts are ones to experience I say!Spas and salons might be closed for now but it doesn’t mean you can’t still send that voucher for her to indulge in at a later date. However, if you want her to enjoy something on her special day, why not bring the spa to her? By providing her with the right tools she can indulge in a DIY facial in the comfort of her own home. For a simple, yet luxurious facial you can gift her with a few key products - I know I’m biased but I can’t recommend enough Pevonia’s Age Correction Marine Collagen Cream, it’s my firm favourite – deeply nourishing and supremely anti-aging. What lady doesn’t need that in her life? And now this best-seller comes in a new Mother’s Day Gift set - with matching cleanser, lotion, gentle exfoliator and three masks (Collagen Mask for deep hydration, Charcoal Mask for eliminating toxins and Green Apple Mask for brightening) – it’s everything she needs to exfoliate, deep cleanse and hydrate her skin.Or for the ultimate salon-style facial at home, follow our step by step guide. This Mother’s Day might well be different from before but you can make it one to remember by still showing Mum how much you care, and in turn how she can truly care for herself too!

Give yourself a spa pedicure in 8 simple steps

by Jo Boyden on Apr 15 2020
Since we are now a few weeks into quarantine and confined to the four walls of our home, we figured it’s the perfect time to practice a few at-home beauty treatments. While we’ve already covered how to create a salon-style facial at home, we have yet to talk DIY spa pedicure!Of course in a perfect world (or should I just say the world in which we were once accustomed to!) we’d be treating ourselves to a pedicure at our local spa, salon or nail bar, but since that isn’t an option for the foreseeable future, we thought we’d give you a step by step on how to give yourself a luxurious spa pedicure at home….and we promise it’s pretty easy to do! Step 1 - Get your tools at the readyThe trick to making a DIY pedicure feel like a spa experience is setting the mood. You want to create a relaxing environment – we are talking soothing music, burning essential oils and lighting that favourite candle which has been collecting dust for months – then ensure you have a stable surface and have at the ready the following tools;Nail polish removerCotton padsFoot or bath soakScrubNail clippersFoot fileNail file/bufferMoisturiserPaper towelToe separatorsQuick-drying top coatNail polishTowelCotton buds Step 2 - Prep your tootiesBefore starting your pedi you want to make sure any residual polish has been totally removed from your toes so take a cotton pad, (it’s best not to use a cotton ball as they can leave lingering cotton ‘hairs’ attached to your toes!) soak it in nail polish remover and get removing by holding the pad firmly on each toe for a few seconds then wiping away. Step 3 – Soak your feet….and relax your senses! The next step is one of my favourites – the foot soak. This will soften your feet while creating a sense of relaxation. Start by pouring a little relaxing foot or bath soak into warm water (this can be in a bath, bowl or handy foot spa!) and pop your feet in. Phytomer’s Oligomer Well Being Sensation Essential Minerals Relaxing Bath is heavenly! It’s an ultra-relaxing lightly foaming, fragranced bath enriched with Oligomer - a sodium-reduced seawater concentrate – to deliver remineralizing properties to strengthen the skin and recharge it with energy!I am also in love with the Phytomer Oligomer Pure Lyophilized Sea Water Bath, another bath soak that contains trace elements and unique minerals from seawater to balance and remineralize skin while creating an unparalleled tension-relief experience.Allow feet to soak for a minimum of 5 minutes but not too long as you don’t want them to resurface as two large wrinkled prunes! Then towel dry. Step 4 – Scrub your feet, not forgetting your legsFor the ultimate spa pedicure experience give yourself a foot and leg scrub by literally massaging a silky exfoliator into your skin for a few minutes. This will not only smooth skin but alleviate any additional tension too. I love using the Pevonia Silky Skin Body Scrub for this step, it gently polishes away dead skin cells and superficial impurities smoothing and softening the skin. Step 5 – Remove dead skinNow that your feet are soothed and soft it’s time to buff away the build-up of any dead skin on the soles of your feet. You can do this by gently scrubbing with a pumice stone or foot file. Be sure to pay particular attention to the bottoms and sides of your heels where you get most build up, as well as the balls of your feet and the area around your toes. The object is to smooth any rough parts not remove layers of skin though! Step 6 – Trim, file and shape nailsFor this step you’ll need good quality nail clippers followed by a file for shaping and smoothing.Begin by trimming any longer nails. To trim correctly, cut your toenails straight across to just above the skin. You can then smooth out the raw edge (and corners depending on the nail shape you are going for) with your nail file working in one direction until they are even. Step 7 – Moisturise and massageTo complete this part of your foot treatment slather on a coat of rich moisturiser and give yourself a mini massage working from toes all the way up your calves. This will help nourish and rehydrate skin. For this step I highly recommend the Pevonia Multi-Active Foot Cream, it provides feet with outstanding repair by soothing, smoothing, restoring and replenishing them. Step 8 – Apply your nail polishBefore you start painting your nails ensure they are dry and any excess cream has been removed. If you have any toe separators now is the time to grab them, if not you can simply roll or twist a piece of paper towel and weave it through your toes – this will prevent the polish from smudging!Start by applying a base coat first if you wish, otherwise your toes are ready for some colour! I can’t recommend enough using a healthy nail polish free of toxic ingredients commonly found in many nail polishes! I love the ELES nail polishes. They are formulated with the best of quality Australia ingredients, do not contain DBP, Toluene, Formaldehyde, Resin or Camphor and the professional patented formula holds it colour and shine for days. Although there isn’t a huge range, they do offer a few diverse shades and I’ve never had an issues with my toe nails weeks after application, as I’ve had in the past with other nail polishes which can leave your nails yellow and weak!Next make sure you shake or roll the polish bottle so you get the right consistency, then paint a thin layer of polish (followed by a second coat) with even, smooth strokes. Ensure you wait a few minutes between laying coats though.Complete your DIY pedicure with a top coat, preferably one that is quick-drying. This will seal in the colour and prolong the wear of your polish. If you have any ‘rogue’ polish marks (let’s face it before now we weren’t exactly pedi pros!) you can remove them with a little bit of your polish remover and the tip of a cotton bud. While the results might not compare to that of your trustee nail technician, your nails and feet will look and feel fab….and will be enough to tie you over until your next in-spa pedi.
self care at home

Practice self-care at home with team BC’s beauty recommendations

by Jo Boyden on Apr 07 2020
Whether you are now working from home, find yourself in isolation with extra time on your hands or are currently channelling your inner teacher while working a full-time job (who doesn’t love a bit of multi-tasking – EEK), practicing self-care is, and will continue to be imperative in these unsettling times. From DIY facials and mini makeovers to pampering baths and eyebrow maintenance, we take you through some of our team's must-try recommendations on how to keep both your skin and wellbeing in check….all you need is a little effort and the right tools! Give yourself a DIY facialWhile we can’t visit our faithful salon or spa for a while, we can practice self-care at home with a pampering DIY facial. A facial is perfect for nurturing both the skin and psych and is very simple to do. For a detailed account of how to achieve a salon-style facial click here.Indulge in a therapeutic bathLittle instantly reduces stress quite like taking a relaxing remineralizing bath. Ahhhhhh. Begin by creating a spa-like atmosphere so your entire body is relaxed – we are talking soothing music, burning essential oils, lighting your favourite candle, whatever it takes to set the mood. Next, fill the bath with a de-stressing bath foam or detoxifying salts. After having the luxury of trying many a bath product, I have to say Phytomer’s Oligomer Well Being Sensation Essential Minerals Relaxing Bath really does create an unparalleled stress-relief experience. This amazing lightly foaming product is enriched with Oligomer - a partially sodium-reduced seawater concentrate that contains all of the remineralizing properties of seawater –to strengthen and restore the skin and release all pent-up tension.Try your hand at a mani/pediWhile having my nails done professionally is something I love to treat myself to once a month, it is totally achievable to do a little DIY mani and pedi at home, and something fun you can do with your kids if you have them at home with you too! You can opt to do a simple mani/pedi which just includes a little nail clipping or filing, followed by a hand soak and then polish application (the best method for me to follow when my 4 year old demands ‘mani/pedi time!’ or for a salon-style DIY experience follow these simple tips; Start by soaking your hands or feet in warm water for a few minutes, you can add some reinvigorating bath salts to the water too! Next exfoliate your hands and feet to promote blood circulation and slough and file your nails to your desired shape. Now do the same process on your feet, but remember to file your soles with a foot file or pumice stone. Next it’s polish application time! Try ELES Cosmetics range of healthy nail polishes. Give yourself a sun-kissed glowLet’s face it, we may be stuck inside for longer than we ever anticipated, but that doesn’t mean we have to forsake that golden, sun-kissed glow, after all who doesn’t feel better with a tan! I personally love the Phytomer Sun Radiance Self-Tanning Cream, it is so light in texture, leaves no streaks and delivers a very natural, luminous, long-lasting tan. Bonus since we won’t be sunning ourselves on the beach anytime soon!Do an at-home peelSomething I love to do every few weeks is treat myself to an at-home peel. The combination of Alpha Hydroxy Acids (like glycolic and lactic acid), Beta Hydroxy Acids (like the acne-fighting salicylic acid) and gentle exfoliants like fruit enzymes dissolve the so-called glue that holds your dead skin cells together, revealing healthier and more radiant looking skin in as little as ten minutes. There are even options with skin-soothing ingredients so they’re safe for sensitive and reactive skin. One of my absolute favourites is the Pevonia Enzymo-Spherides Peeling Cream which combines natural fruit pineapple and papaya enzymes to eliminate impurities, blackheads, dead cells and toxins and in turn reveal smooth, soft and glowing skin.Try your hand at massageGive yourself or get a family member to give you a massage! And don’t underestimate your kids if you have them at home, sometimes my 6 year old is better at massages than my hubby!I’m talking anything from a relaxing hand, arm or foot massage, to a back and shoulder massage to elevate aches and pains, or a good head massage to reduce tension headaches. And no it’s not going to be anything like indulging in the hands of the professionals at your favourite salon or spa, but it will reduce stress and enable you to decompress, all the same. Before starting the massage you need to choose a massage cream, gel or oil. Your choice can hugely impact the effect of the massage as particular scents can evoke relaxation while certain ingredients will alleviate aches and pains. For an indulgent hand and arm massage I adore the Phytomer Oleocreme Ultra-Nourishing Hand Cream followed by an all over arm spritz of best-selling Pevonia Dry Oil Body Moisturiser. It revitalizes and deeply nourishes every inch of skin with squalene, lavender and chamomile. Bliss. If your legs and feet are feeling heavy and fatigued, both the Pevonia’s Tension Relief Gel and Phytomer Cryotonic Soothing Leg Gel are a must. Both products are anti-inflammatory, cooling and uplifting gel formulations for tired aching muscles and sore feet. For a therapeutic back and shoulder massage to alleviate aches and pains at the hands of stress, I would highly recommend using the Pevonia Micro Emulsion Massage Oil Anti-Stress. With its gorgeous aroma and nourishing ingredients, it immediately releases pent up tension. For more focused areas of muscle tension, the Pevonia Marine Magnesium is amazing. This de-stressing treatment oil works quickly to relieve fatigue, muscle cramps, and muscular inflammation while nourishing your body and spirit with remineralizing and wellness induced benefits. Now take your product, rub between your hands and place hands on the chosen area for massage. Set tone and rhythm of massage translating comfort and relaxation,Give yourself a mini makeoverWhile you might be currently donning the ‘makeup free look’ since you are self-isolating at home, a mini makeover can provide a creative and fun outlet for self-expression that can lift you up during tough times. I definitely find it helps me conquer any anxiety I might be feeling! At the moment, my mind is constantly preoccupied or engaged in worry, but those ten minutes of putting on makeup for fun is a time where I get away from that, after all, it’s pretty difficult to focus on all that is happening in the world when I’m playing with my amazing array of ELES makeup shades! So do yourself a favour and use this time to enjoy your makeup while it’s no longer a must-do daily task!Do some eyebrow maintenanceFor those of us who rely on having our brows maintained by an amazing brow specialist, the next few months will be tough! Maintain healthy skin: How to create a salon style facial at home

by Jo Boyden on Apr 01 2020
For some, a trip to a favourite salon or spa is pure indulgence, for others, it’s a part of their everyday life, but now with the enforced closures of all salons and spas as a result of the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic, this luxury, for the foreseeable future at least, is sadly no longer an option. This, however, does not mean you have to compromise what your therapist has worked so hard to achieve for your skin! Whilst you can’t recreate what a professional can do in the salon, you can take your at-home skincare routine to the next level by giving yourself a full facial experience - it will not only be good for your skin but your wellbeing too!So read on and follow these 9 simple steps on how to master a salon-like facial and achieve healthy, radiant skin. Step 1 - PrepTo begin your spa-at-home facial, fill a bowl with hot water and soak some face cloths. Take one face cloth and while it’s warm and damp place over your face for 30 seconds to allow it to loosen any dirt or oil that’s trapped in the skin.If you are wearing any eye makeup, gently remove this by soaking or spritzing two cotton pads with eye makeup remover then place them over both eyes leaving them for a minute to allow the product to work its magic and remove any stubborn eyeliner or mascara, then gently wipe away ensuring not to drag the delicate skin. Step 2 – Double cleanseThe benefit of following a deep double cleansing ritual is that it not only removes toxins and impurities, it also primes your pores to better absorb all products to follow, leaving you with a brighter more radiant complexion. To start the double cleanse, opt for a cleansing oil. We LOVE the ELES Transformation Cleansing Oil! The oil in the product attracts the dirt, make-up, and oil on the skin surface literally melting it away. Because it’s water-soluble, when you wash off the cleansing oil you will wash away all the makeup and skin oils. This ensures your second cleanse with your normal cleanser thoroughly cleans your skin.Next take your everyday cleanser, or an appropriate cleanser for your specific skin type and cleanse your face for 30 seconds working the product into your skin in light circular motions from top to bottom or vice versa. We recommend a non-foaming milky or cream cleanser for dry and sensitive skin and a foaming or gel cleanser for oily complexions or for those with acne-prone skin.Wash off and remove excess cleanser with a facecloth. Step 3 - ExfoliateNext, gently exfoliate your skin for up to 60 seconds. Ensure you use the correct product for your skin type. If you have very sensitive or rosacea-prone skin you need to steer clear of abrasive exfoliators and scrubs which contain microbeads. We LOVE the Phytomer Vegetal Exfoliant with Natural Enzymes. It’s a soft, gentle exfoliant for even the most sensitive of skin types, as it uses natural enzymes to encourage cell turnover without scrubbing or irritating your skin. After application skin is fresh, glowy and silky smooth. For those with sensitive to normal skin we, (and many of our customers) highly recommend the Pevonia Gentle Exfoliating Cleanser. It gently polishes your skin with its unique creamy, granular texture formulated with Jojoba Beads, Saponaria, and Chamomile. Skin resurfaces smoother, softer and cleaner every time. And if your skin tends to be on the oily end of the spectrum or you are prone to blackheads or acne, the Vie Collection Renewing Exfoliating Cream is the exfoliator for you! It gently imitates the spectacular effects of dermatological peeling and microdermabrasion. Designed to make the skin look renewed, radiant and youthful, it smooths away roughness, reduces large pored appearance and reveals completely smooth, luminous skin.Remove exfoliator from skin – you can use one of your warm, damp face cloths or rinse and then pat dry. Step 4 – SteamAfter cleansing and exfoliating, next comes the steam. It helps the pores to open and makes skin further absorbent for the products to follow. There are several ways you can steam your skin. The simplest involves wetting a facecloth with warm water and placing it on your face and neck for five minutes. But if you have the time and the means, there are much better options for this important step.If you are lucky enough to have a facial steamer on hand you’re readily armed, if not, simply heat some water in a pan on your stove (to recreate a salon-style experience add aromatic essential oils like lavender to the water, or simply add a mix of dried flowers or even plain sliced lemon.) After letting it simmer for a few minutes, pour the water into a large bowl, place your face over the bowl ensuring you do not touch the water and drape a towel over your head and the bowl so the steam is unable to escape. Stay put for a few minutes. If you want to skip the steam you can add an extra boost of hydration by spritzing on a facial mist. A facial mist with an invigorating scent can help perk up your senses and prep your skin for the rest of your DIY facial experience. Step 5 – MassageDon’t overlook the benefits of a massage! While it’s definitely not quite the same doing it on yourself you can still have a lot of fun with it while reaping in the multiple benefits. This step is essential to increase both blood circulation and lymphatic drainage, leading to brighter, healthier skin.Typically in the salon, your therapist would have a customised ampoule which she would work deeply into your skin to target a specific concern. At home, you can use a massage cream for the face or a face oil. I absolutely adore Pevonia’s Vitaminic Concentrate. The luxurious oil literally drenches the skin combatting dehydration while immersing you in a sea of calm with its amazing mandarin scent. To commence the massage dampen your palms and take a small amount of your chosen product. Starting with the middle of your forehead work the product towards the temples with circular motions. Then massage along the sides of your nose and cheeks. Lastly massage lips, chin, and jawline not forgetting to massage your neck! After 5-10 minutes of massage time, remove any excess product with a warm, damp face cloth or if you’d prefer, wash your face with water. Step 6 – MaskNo facial is complete without a mask! They are a great stand-in if you're used to getting regular facials as they give your skin an extra nourishing boost with whatever ingredients you feel you need at the moment. If you want to address more than one skin issue you can use multiple masks, applying them to the different zones of your face. For oily or blemish-prone skin, a mud, clay or charcoal mask will work best as it’ll soak up the extra oil that clogs up your pores like Pevonia’s Pure Skin Charcoal Mask. Formulated with the finest micronized charcoal, this purifying mask rids skin of toxins and lifts debris out of pores, leaving the complexion smoother and pores minimized. For dry skin, you need a hydrating mask, try Phytomer’s Hydrasea Thirst-Relief Rehydrating Mask. It feeds the skin with ultimate nourishment so you can literally feel your complexion tighten and plump in nearly an instant. The end result is youthfully restored skin.If your skin tends to be sensitive, a soothing cream mask enriched with nurturing ingredients is a must. Try Phytomer’s Accept Desensitizing Mask. It smooths on skin to calm, heal, soften and hydrate the complexion and boosts the skins defence system to reduce inflammation and redness. And if you are simply concerned about skin ageing, your go-to should be the Pevonia Ageless Skin Collagen Mask – my personal favourite! it instills skin with collagen polypeptides, Vitamin A, Green Tea and Mandarin Orange Extract to repair fine lines and wrinkles, encourage healthy cell turn over and effectively increase your skin's overall radiance.A good face mask also prepares and primes the skin, expanding pores to allow ingredients to penetrate deeply, so after mask application and removal (use lukewarm water to remove all traces of the facial mask, pat dry), it’s the perfect time to apply your favourite serum and then moisturiser. Step 7 – ToneIf you haven’t yet incorporated toner into your skin care routine, now is the time. Toning is a very important part of the routine as it helps clean and close the pores as well as brighten the skin and restore its balance. With a cotton pad, gently apply a toner which is best suited to your skin type all over face and neck, removing any excess face mask. Step 8 – SerumNow that your skin is in a more receptive state, you’re going to want to give it a good dose of nourishment by adding a serum into the routine. Apply your chosen serum for your specific needs and let the antioxidants and peptides work its way deep into your skin for immediate skin therapy. Step 9 – MoisturiseAny skin-pampering session requires replenishment so finish your treatment with moisturiser to seal in all the benefits of your facial! This last and essential step to your home facial will rehydrate your skin and retain any moisture loss. Just as your therapist would, choose the perfect moisturiser for your particular needs. If your skin is lacking radiance and lustre, one of my all-time favourite moisturisers is the Phytomer Hydra Continue Radiance Energizing Cream. This lightweight cream rich with vitamins gives an “invigorating boost” effect to the skin, transforming dull, devitalized skin into a brighter, firmer more youthful complexion. If you are dealing with acne-prone skin try Pevonia’s Problematic Skincare Cream. This light-textured and oil-free moisturiser is formulated with Glycolic Acid, Calendula and Panthenol to combat blemishes, prevent pore clogging and soothe, hydrate and desensitize the skin. And if you are simply focused on skin aging, we can’t get enough of our best-selling Age Correction Marine Collagen Cream. Combining Marine Collagen and Squalane, this rich, deeply nourishing cream softens fine lines and wrinkles while replenishing vital nutrients.Simply apply your chosen product all over your face and gently massage, letting it absorb into your skin.Finish by applying eye cream to the delicate under-eye area. My personal favourite at the moment is the Phytomer Pionniere XMF Reset Eye Fluid. It has visibly reduced my dark circles and puffiness as well as fading wrinkles! Just remember even if you only have 10 minutes to take care of yourself and put yourself first, make it really count. We recommend indulging in this DIY facial once a week to maintain healthy skin until you can return to your salon or spa for a full facial treatment….

Skincare is definitely the area to invest in when it comes to your beauty routine. I’m not just talking about investing your hard-earned money, but time and patience as well, especially when it comes to creating a routine that will actually work and provide you with the results you are seeking. But where do you really start? After all, when it comes to skincare shopping, it's so easy to feel overwhelmed by the sheer number of options especially with constant new releases and new trends taking centre stage!Luckily at Beauty Collective HQ we have the fortune to trial many of our products so I turned to my trustee work colleagues to find out which ones they really can’t live without, so I can, in turn, share our favourite finds with you.Whether you are looking for a cream to target a specific skin concern or you are just after some inspiration as now is the time to upgrade, we have you covered with these beauty heroes the team at BC can’t get enough of.PEVONIA MICRO-RETINOL SERUMI’m completely in love with Pevonia’s Micro-Retinol line. I noticed the most dramatic change to my skin and it just keeps getting better. My favourite product in the line is the Micro-Retinol Serum; it gives my skin a glow and seems to make the pores disappear. I’ve noticed a great improvement to firmness, moisture levels, skin texture and a reduction in hyper-pigmentation. What more could I want? I’ve tried many sunscreens in my time but none as gorgeously lightweight and non-greasy as this one. It’s also lightly tinted, has the perfect texture to apply before makeup, and as well as keeping my skin protected it actually also feels noticeably hydrated and doesn’t clog my pores like so many sunscreens do! If you are looking for an amazing everyday sunscreen, this is one you must try! - Taryn Gray, Brand Co-ordinator PEVONIA CLARIFYL SPOT TREATMENT Even though I’m in my early 30s my skin still gets easily irritated and spots appear! Amazing.- Elaine Palapag, Social Media and e-Marketing Co-ordinator PEVONIA RS2 CREAM My favourite product is the Pevonia RS2 Cream.I suffer from Rosacea so my skin used to be very reactive, sensitive and red. Highlighter like a pro

How to Apply Highlighter like a Pro

by Jo Boyden on Nov 15 2019
Whether you want dewy skin or a super-shimmery glow, here is everything you need to know about applying your highlighter like a professional. Firstly though, it’s important to remember; less is more. It only takes one swipe too many to go from a my-skin-but-better kind of glow to being schnitzelled in glitter! Follow these five steps to avoid the latter: 1 - Prep Your Skin The reason we use highlighting is to make our skin look healthy and glowy – as if you just came out of a yoga class and downed a litre or two of water. So the most important step in achieving healthy, hydrated skin is with great skin prep. Don’t panic, you don’t need to do a 10-Step Korean Skin Routine. Keep it simple; cleanse your face, exfoliate with a gentle scrub, we love the Pevonia Gentle Exfoliating Cleanser and then apply a hydrating moisturiser and sunscreen, skip the moisturiser if your sunscreen is a multi-tasking one such as the ELES Luminous Defence Brightening Day Protection 50. If you like to use a makeup primer pat on a thin layer of that too. 2 - Apply Your Foundation Foundation is not a must and you may prefer to skip this step or apply a BB Cream, CC Cream, Tinted Moisturiser or even just a Concealer on the flaws. Whatever your preference the goal is to even the skin tone out to your desired level. If its evening and you want to amp up the glow then mix a few drops of a liquid highlighter into your base before applying it to your skin. ELES Liquid Illuminator is ideal for this. Finish by bouncing a damp Pro-Blender Sponge all over your skin, it’ll make your skin look fresh and dewy. 3 - Choose Your Highlighter Formula Now that your base is set, you’re ready for the fun part…choosing your highlighter! Finding the right level of shimmer can be a little tricky though, so here are some pointers: A creamy highlighter can be applied before or after foundation. A powder formula, on the other hand, is better applied as the last step in your makeup routine. Liquid highlighters are better for mixing with foundations or other bases, they have a tendency to break up the foundation underneath it during application. Another consideration is the shade, is it warm or cool? It’s imperative to find a good match if you want your highlighter to look natural, or simply go for a neutral shade that suits everyone such as the ELES Stick Illuminator. 4 - Pick the Right Highlighter Applicator Choosing the right applicator depends on three things: the formula, the intensity you want, and where you are applying it. Generally creams and sticks are best applied with your fingers (the warmth of your hands helps to melt the product into the skin), while powders can be applied either with a brush or a sponge. For the lightest coverage, use a brush with thin, scattered bristles, like a fan brush. For more shimmer payoff, use a denser brush, like a tapered or stippling brush. And for the most pigment payoff, use a dampened beauty sponge. When applying the product in smaller areas (your lips, nose, or eyes), use a small, compact tool, like a pencil brush, for the most precise placement. 5 - Apply It to the High Points Highlighting is basically the opposite of contouring. The goal here is to bring the high points of your face - the tops of your cheekbones, along your brow bones, the top of your cupid’s bow, and down the bridge of your nose forward and make them really stand out. Word of advice: Avoid your T-zone (your forehead, middle of your cheeks, and chin) since it's naturally oily and prone to excess shine (any extra shimmer can bring you into 80’s territory). For larger areas, like your cheekbones, use your brush to sweep your highlighter in a windshield-wiper motion over the skin. If you prefer to use a sponge, you can dampen it with a setting spray and use it to bounce or press highlighter onto the skin. For smaller spaces, like the inner corners of your eyes, your cupid’s bow, and the tip of your nose, use your small pointed brush to press the product exactly where you want it, and blend it out with your finger.

7 reasons your skin is dehydrated and how to fix it

by Jo Boyden on Aug 22 2019
Winter, darn winter! Yes it’s the time of year that your skin can look and feel seriously parched, think lack-lustre, inflamed, or just plain devitalized. Chances are your skin is simply dehydrated and in need of some serious moisture boosting love! And let’s not forget, even those with oily skin can be suffering from dehydration too! After all just because your skin is oily doesn’t mean you are immune to external factors and lifestyle choices that deplete your skin’s water content. Dehydration is in fact characterised by a lack of water not oil.Luckily dehydrated skin can be relieved with a combination of lifestyle changes and topical treatments. Below are 7 reasons you could be battling dehydrated skin and our recommendations for how to fix it. Water intake Yes we all know that the number one way to counteract dehydration is to drink plenty of water! But there is the when and the how! This water intake actually needs to commence as soon as you awaken from blissful slumber! It is suggested that drinking approximately 2 glasses of water first thing is hands down the most ideal way to bring back your hydration levels, after all you’ve not replenished fluid levels for a number of hours over night. Not enough ‘quality’ sleep Remember this as you will! Poor sleep leads to dehydration, dehydration causes poor sleep. Eek we have ourselves a vicious cycle here. Firstly before bed, prise that mobile phone out of your fingers (sooo guilty here!) and put it down! I don’t need to tell you the impact screen time has on you, secondly drink a glass of water prior to sleep, yes you may think bad idea as surely you’ll be up in the night stumbling to the bathroom but believe me your skin (and all other vital organs) will lap up that glass of water and you’ll be able to notice the difference in the morning! Finally turn off the light and get that precious shut eye as apparently those that sleep for an average of six hours a night are up to 59% more likely to be dehydrated that someone who sleeps for say 8 hours. That’ll be me then. Pass me a glass of water someone! Too much caffeine & alcohol I’m not saying go cold turkey or anything as like me I love a good cuppa and won’t say no to a glass of vino in an evening, but if dehydration could be something you are suffering from, significantly reducing your intake of both caffeine and alcohol will dramatically benefit your skin. And for every coffee or alcoholic beverage to do indulge in, drink a glass of water! Your skincare regime or lack of While it is necessary to hydrate your skin from the inside out it’s also very important to hydrate your skin at the surface level too. One of the best ways to achieve this is with a topical treatment to lock in moisture and prevent transepidermal water loss.a) Use A Hyaluronic Acid SerumHyaluronic acid is the number one go to ingredient for effectively replenishing dehydrated skin, it helps bind and retain moisture, keeping skin soft and subtle and plump! We are in love with the Vie Collection Wrinkle Dimension Hyaluronic Acid Concentrateb) Apply a rich moisturiser at nightWe all naturally lose moisture while we sleep so using a rich nourishing moisturiser prior to bed will stand your skin in good stead. We highly recommend both the Pevonia Age Correction Marine Collagen Cream which is rich in both Hyaluronic Acid and Collagen the perfect combination to replenish devitalised skin. As well as the Phytomer Hydrasea Night Plumping Rich Cream, which provides optimum skin hydration during the night. From the very first use, the skin appears drenched in moisture!c) Don’t use harsh face Scrub but do exfoliate! As dead skin builds up, it can diminish the absorption of important skincare essentials like your serum and moisturiser, exfoliation is therefore an important skincare step in aiding the recovery of dehydrated skin, however be sure to use a gentle exfoliating cleanser and once or twice a week only. Hot water Hot water will strip your skin of its natural oils and those natural oils are what protect your skin against water loss by forming a barrier.Believe me I know how indulgent a simple hot bath or shower feels especially on a cold morning or evening but you will thank me by telling you to turn down that heat and opt for a more lukewarm temp. Your daily diet We already know that what you eat can impact your skin but did you know that our skin is reliant on essential fatty acids, think oily fish, nuts, and fresh green veggies to battle dehydration? So next time you decide to ‘diet’ consider how it might affect your complexion especially if you are depriving yourself of good fats. Heating/Air conditioning As much as many of us have become reliant on heating or revised cycle air con in the cold months, both can dramatically disrupt the natural moisture balance in your skin. Now while it’s highly unlikely we’d be prepared to suffer the consequence of not turning the heating on, brrrrr, just make sure you balance your day with fresh air and if your skin is feeling particularly dry, keep on hand a spritz to add a burst of rehydration when needed. Most of us understand the negative impact of dehydration on our overall health but who knew it could wreak havoc with our skin!

The dos and don’ts of cleansing your skin: 10 things you need to know now

by Jo Boyden on Jul 15 2019
It’s the first step to your skincare routine and the step which creates the foundation for all other skincare products that follow so nailing it is imperative! But many are under the false impression that cleansing involves a little soap, water, a 10-second lather and voila, all the days’ makeup and remnants are removed and your face is thoroughly cleansed and good to go. Oh, how wrong they are! Below we have outlined ten things you need to know about cleansing, follow these and you’re on the path to healthy, clear and radiant skin in next to no time!DO work out what the right cleanser is for your skin type and stick to itFinding a cleanser to target your particular skin concern is a game-changer, whether you have sensitive skin, dry skin, aging skin or something in between there is a cleanser out there for everyone. But understanding the difference between cream and foaming gel cleansers will also stand you in good stead. Cream cleansers are typically gentle on the skin and more moisturising. Gel cleansers tend to provide a much deeper cleanse however as they foam they draw out oil, reduce excess oil production and as a result can be a little on the drying side so tend to work better for those with oily or combination skin types.DON’T wash your face with hot waterNo sireee, hot water can cause skin inflammation and irritation by upsetting the skin barrier function, stick to lukewarm water for best results.DO cleanse your face both morning and nightA lot of us tend to skimp on the morning cleanse, after all, we removed the previous day's makeup and grime the night before and all we’ve done is sleep, right? Correct! Alas what many don’t know is that while we sleep we still release impurities which wind up sitting on the surface of our skin, plus if you’re like me you would have layered your skin with goodies the night before so it’s important that any remnants are removed in the morning especially is you’ve applied potent ingredients like retinol or glycolic acid which can cause sun sensitivity.DON’T forget to cleanse your chin and neck too!Often forgotten (guilty as charged!) our jawline and neck are just as prone to dirt and grime as your face so make sure you pay them some cleansing attention too!DO double cleanseWe’ve all heard of the saying “double cleanse” but is it really necessary? The simple answer is yes! But only in the evening as over-cleansing in the morning can result in the destruction of the skin’s barrier function. One cleanse at night will indeed remove the day's makeup and grime but adding a second cleanse into your routine will work deeper, thoroughly cleansing pore and removing dead skin cells.DON’T use a generic bar soapThese soaps can dramatically alter the natural pH balance of your skin which can send your skin into overdrive – think blemish breakout!DO deep cleanse weeklyIntroducing a deep exfoliating cleanse once a week can work wonders for your skin as it encourages cell turnover, ultimately resulting in brighter, more radiant skin.DON’T use a flannelDaily use of flannels or face cloths as many might call them, although popular can actually irritate the skin if they are too harsh (scrubbing can strip the skin of its natural protective barrier) plus they can foster bacteria if not washed meticulously every day which can lead to pesky pimples! Best to stick to your loyal fingertips to cleanse effectively with no erm side effects!DO pat dry with a soft towelDrying your face correctly after cleansing is important! Be sure not to rub your face with a “crispy” towel (yup we’ve all had those from time to time!) rubbing can actually age skin, be sure you just gently pat dry, pay particular attention to the delicate eye area.DON’T be lazy and use just face wipesYes they are quick, easy and can be effective for some plus let’s face (pardon the pun!) it after a big night out quick and easy is what we want and hey at least you aren’t going to bed with your makeup on right? But it’s important to know that many face wipes contain alcohol and other harsh ingredients that will strip your skin. The current 5 best-selling cleansers on Beauty Collective;Phytomer Perfect Visage Gentle Cleansing MilkPhytomer Accept Neutralizing CleanserELES Transformation Cleansing OilMedicalia Gentle CleanserPhytomer Souffle Marin Cleansing Foaming Cream

Dermatologists Share Their Advice for Great Skin

by Jo Boyden on Jun 26 2019
Here at Beauty Collective HQ, we constantly receive a smorgasbord of questions from our customers, and while we are brimming with great tips, rituals and product recommendations, we too often seek advice from our esteemed suppliers and dermatologists alike. To learn about the skin-care tips these pros live by, read on…Use any downtime to do a skin treatment“I keep extra beauty treatments in my car in a little bag. When I'm in bad traffic (at a red light of course), I apply serum, an eye mask, teeth whitening strips, eyebrow gel, and more!" -Francesca Fusco, dermatologist.Ok, while we don’t recommend performing facials when in the car! We do agree that having the right products in the right places (think by the bed or by the hand basin) may encourage you to apply some of those products we often forget such as a good anti-ageing hand cream and a gorgeous eye and lip balm. We love Phytomer - Oleocreme Ultra-Nourishing Hand Cream for a daily dose of hydrating marine oils.Practice a facial massage to fight wrinkles"Many people (myself included) frown and scrunch their faces at night, leading to frown lines and crow’s feet. To relax my face, I do facial acupressure for a few minutes at bedtime. Press above your inner eyebrows, temples, and next to your nostrils, holding for 10 seconds each." –Jessica Wu, dermatologist. We agree there is nothing better for smoothing tension wrinkles than a soothing massage and we are all addicted to the Rosee Soin from Phytomer. It’s a heavenly dry oil that rejuvenates your skin, calms your senses and leaves skin super soft and hydrated. A few drops massaged onto a cleansed skin at night (you can do this while watching your favourite TV series) will smooth out any stress lines you’ve earned that day.Hydrate your skin from the inside out—and outside in"Despite what you hear all the time, the amount of water you drink daily doesn't translate into proper skin hydration. It's vital to hydrate your skin from the outside in with serums, creams, and hydrating mists." –Dendy Engelman, dermatologist. It’s very true and never so true as in Winter when artificial heating and a more sedentary lifestyle can leave our skin parched and thirsty. Our go-to for deep hydration is the Vie Collection - Wrinkle Dimension Hyaluronic Acid Concentrate. It attracts and binds water to the skin keeping it super soft and super supple. The perfect skin drink.Avoid hot showers that can be drying"I never wash my face with hot water–it is too harsh. Only tepid water at the sink." -Elizabeth Tanzi, clinical professor of dermatology.Gentle cleansing of the skin with warm (not hot) water is not only better for managing your skin’s natural pH but will also prevent moisture loss on a grand scale. To remove makeup and the days grime at night we all reach for the ELES - Transformation Cleansing Oil. It emulsifies foundation and binds impurities that can be washed away in water and leaves the skin balanced and soft and ready for your serums and creams.Apply sunscreen to your neck, chest, and hands first"Apply sunscreen to the neck, chest, and hands before the face–these areas age faster and are harder to improve than the face. We often forget to apply sunscreen there even though they're exposed as much as the face." –Doris Day, dermatologist. We absolutely agree with this one! Sunscreen is your bestie when it comes to anti-ageing skin care. Our favourite is the Medicalia - Sunscreen SPF 30. It’s lightweight and totally reliable and comes in a generous 150ml tube so there’s no excuse for leaving out your neck, chest and hands!Don't ever rub your eyes"If you rub your eyes like you are scrubbing a pot, your eyes will look black like a pot! When you're taking off eye makeup, gently wipe off mascara as if you're touching an egg." –Jeanine Downie, dermatologist.Very true and we agree that a good product to remove your eye makeup will mean you don’t have to rub, it will do all the work for you! Our go-to is Phytomer - Micellar Water Eye Makeup Removal Solution. It’s strong enough to remove waterproof makeup but gentle enough for even the most sensitive eyes.Let your lips guide your skin care routine."One tip to know when your skin is ready for seriously creamy moisturizers: Your lips feel dry first, so you know the humidity has dropped, and it's time for more moisture." –Ellen Marmur, dermatologist.Lips are a great indicator for hydration levels and we look after ours with Phytomer - Youth Contour Reviving Wrinkle Correction Cream –Eye and Lip. Not only does this wonderful multi-tasker protect our precious lips but also our delicate eye contours.Check the menu for skin-saving fatty acids"Your diet has a huge impact on your skin. Avoid starchy vegetables and refined carbohydrates like white bread and rice and instead opt for foods high in omega 3's and fatty acids like avocados and salmon to help give you that youthful glow." –Whitney Bowe, dermatologist.Fatty Acids are also a great addition to topical skin care and Phytomer - Hydracontinue Radiance Energizing Cream contains Buckthorn Pulp extract which is super-rich in Omega-7, a very rare essential fatty acid that stimulates cell metabolism and increases cell vitality.
Beauty Collective - blemished skin

The best way to deal with blemished skin

by Jo Boyden on May 22 2019
Still suffering from blemish-prone skin but feel you’re too old to be getting spots? Unsure how you should best deal with it? We hear you and are here to help!Adult spots (or acne as it’s referred to) can actually affect up to 50% of us, but before tackling your issue, it’s important firstly to understand why and how they are formed. What causes blemishes?Blemished prone skin can be triggered by a number of factors from diet to stress, genetics to hormones, a reaction to topical products or environmental factors, however the spots themselves are the result of an over production of sebum (oil) which can mix with dead skin cells and other grime on the surface of your skin leading to blocked pores. How to best prevent themWhile the dreaded blemishes are unpredictable and sadly part and parcel of everyday life for many, there are a few methods you can adopt to try and prevent them; Stop pores getting clogged by deep cleansing twice daily and using gentle exfoliation. N.B We are talking gentle exfoliation! People often think daily “scrubbing” will prevent blackheads but it can actually increase the shedding of skin cells therefore causing further clogging on the pores! Make sure you use exfoliators that don’t require physical scrubbing. We highly recommend Phytomer Vegetal Exfoliant with Natural Enzymes. Use non-greasy, non-comedogenic (pore clogging) products or products that do not contain additional ingredients like artificial fragrances and preservatives as these commonly cause skin reactions. Always wash your hands before touching your face, in fact, keep your mitts off your face altogether! Clean your makeup brushes often (we are talking once a week) – makeup brushes naturally accumulate and harbour bacteria and an overload of bacteria can trigger breakouts! Adjust your diet. You want to ensure you include lots of fresh, green leafy vegetables and dramatically reduce the amount of sugar and dairy you may be consuming. Some experts agree in particular that milk may stimulate oil glands thanks to the hormones, creating a breeding ground for blemishes! Eek. Flush toxins by drinking plenty of water Remove makeup before any exercise. We are talking energetic exercise though when you may sweat a little, not walking from your house to the car. How to best treat themWe have all been guilty of over-treating our blemishes! Topical ingredients such as salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide if overused can really dry out your skin (yes, we understand you want to dry out the skin and reduce the oil flow) but beware over-dry skin care can actually cause oil production to go into overdrive and in turn produce more clogged pores which equates to more spots! Vicious cycle. Also when used in unison these ingredients can slightly inflame the top layer of skin making it look red and raw! Just what you want, to replace a spot with red, raw skin! No thank you. Instead, opt for professional skincare created specifically to treat blemish prone skin with pure ingredients.A tried and trusted skincare routine will really help with symptoms and keep those pesky pimples under control just be sure to include a face mask into the mix as we promise a good face mask can be a game changer for those with blemish prone skin. We are currently in LOVE with Phytomer’s Oligopur Flawless Skin Mask.Just remember to keep pimples at bay, you only need to apply a face mask once or twice a week for a minimum of 10 minutes. Easy. When your skin is acting up, reaching for your concealer and foundation seems like the only answer as there is no way you’re ready to face the world with the Taj Mahal on your chin in all its glory. But choose wisely, as the wrong foundation can exacerbate blemishes! Consider switching to mineral-based cosmetics. They contain ingredients such as silica, titanium dioxide, and zinc oxide that soak up excess oil without clogging pores, allowing skin to actually breathe freely! Make sure you get your hands on the ELES bestselling Liquid Powder Mineral Foundation, it will calm skin with anti-inflammatories, provide natural-looking coverage, and won’t clog pores. You can win the war against pimples, just be sure to follow these simple steps.

Cloudless skin: Why you want it and how to achieve it

by Jo Boyden on May 01 2019
By now we’ve all heard of the k-beauty craze ‘glass skin’ but there is a new kid on the block, the latest k-beauty trend you have to try and it’s known as ‘Cloudless skin’.What is cloudless skin? The name speaks for itself – think of the purity and flawlessness of a bright blue cloudless sky and that is what this trend aims to achieve! To emulate the skin of a young child, you know the nearly transparent, radiant, blemish and pore-free skin, free of environmental damage. Yes please! But while creating the appearance of truly perfect, pore-free skin may seem next to impossible, there are steps you can take to give you the best possible chance. How do you achieve it?So now you know what it is, how exactly do you achieve cloudless skin I hear you say! Well sadly it won’t happen overnight, in short it’s all down to a strict diet and skincare routine to which you are devout – no faltering. A healthy, nutritious diet and skincare routine which will protect against four major skin concerns - dullness, clogged pores, irritation and environmental damage. Diet Gorge (literally) on dark, leafy greens, consume plenty of whole grains daily (I am personally loving whole oats rich in antioxidants, buckwheat which is packed with magnesium, iron, B vitamins and fibre! And quinoa which has more vitamins, minerals, protein, healthy fats and fibre than more other whole grains!) And try to avoid sugar where possible (so definitely no more muffins, cakes, bread, chai lattes etc…) Dullness Opt for gentle exfoliation 2-3 times a week instead of using harsher, gritty scrubs once a week. Choose exfoliators which will provide the skin with a dose of hydration as well as sloughing away those unwanted dead skin cells. Do be sure not to overdo it though as exfoliation can cause irritation and dryness which will not aid in achieving the cloudless skin trend! We highly recommend Phytomer’s Vegetal Exfoliant with Natural Enzymes, it’s a soft gentle exfoliant for even the most sensitive of skin, which uses enzymes to encourage cell turnover without scrubbing the skin. It truly does erase the dullness that may hamper your glow, revealing a luminous, smooth complexion. Clogged pores It’s all about double cleansing baby! This will ensure that all those pore-clogging impurities, as well as excess oil and dirt, are fully removed from your skin. The technique is exactly how it sounds – start by using an oil-based cleanser - we LOVE the ELES Transformation Cleansing Oil - then follow with a water-based cleanser – we highly recommend Phytomer’s Doux Visage Velvet Cleansing Cream and Micellar Water from Vie Collection. Also applying a mask once a week will really help to de-clog skin and benefit the overall health of your skin. Our favourite is Phytomer’s Oligopur Flawless Skin Mask it’s totally no drying, has a cream-foam texture and after only a few weeks of use, pores will be visibly tightened. Irritation Keep inflammation to a minimum by using deeply nourishing, soothing products. We are loving Phytomer’s Douceur Intemporelle Restorative Shield Cream. It’s essential to maintain a healthy pH balance so be sure to use non-stripping toners too! Environmental damage Use skin specific products rich in anti-oxidants. These fight free radical damage. We are obsessed with Phytomer’s Citadine Citylife Face and Eye Contour Sorbet Cream. It not only sweeps away toxic microparticles and repairs damage caused by pollution, but it also provides an ultra-moisturising facial experience! Finally, religiously wear high factor SPF – not just when you’re heading to the beach but daily! Give ELES’s Luminous Defence Brightening Day Protection SPF 50 a try, you won’t regret it!
Beauty Collective - Urban Skin Syndrome

Urban Skin Syndrome

by Jo Boyden on Apr 16 2019
It’s a reality. And if you thought that hormones were a nightmare to contend with now the air we breathe every day is causing our skin to prematurely age, erupt in breakouts and might even be the cause of annoying skin conditions such as eczema. Pollution is a real problem, so real that the World Health Organisation now considers it a major skin health issue.Sadly, even if you are a beacon of good living: eat a healthy diet, drink your bucket of water each day and exercise like a boss, yet your skin isn’t glowing like an Instagram selfie, you are most likely suffering the effects of toxicity from urban living.Know your enemyOur skin is our largest and most exposed organ and it struggles to cope with the constant onslaught of chemicals in the atmosphere. The end result is skin that becomes sensitive, hyper-pigmented, acne-prone and unbalanced and of course, prematurely aged.So why is pollution your enemy? You’ve no doubt heard of free radicals, these are atoms or molecules that contain unpaired electrons making them unstable and are considered to be associated with a wide range of illness and disease. They can evolve from natural reactions in the body (in food and drink). You can also find them in the air we breathe, the exhaust we inhale, in smoke, industrial waste, pesticides and many other processes in every day life. And sadly free radicals don’t like to be alone, these “Billy no mates” are always on the lookout for friends, they break through cell barriers and steal an electron from our healthy cells. This oxidization process creates another free radical and does untold damage to your skin at a cellular level.Ultimately the result of all this destruction is unhealthy skin cells and unhealthy cells lead to loss of elasticity due to collagen breakdown, unbalanced oil levels and overall dullness that no amount of exfoliating and massage will overcome.Thankfully, as we learn more about free radical damage we are also learning ways to prevent it! One the easiest way is to pack your diet and skin care routine with anti-oxidants. Anti-oxidants neutralise free radicals by generously donating a spare electron (friend) before it can steal one from your skin. But there’s more you can do…Firstly, cleansing your skin properly (not aggressively) each night. While pollutants can be like cell munching monsters that stick to the skin like Velcro a great cleanser, used gently will help remove them and still maintain your skin’s natural barriers. While all anti-oxidant ingredients have benefits, research has shown that there are some other ingredient discoveries that used in combination with anti-oxidants yield even better results! Cue PHYTOMERMore than 15 years ago, PHYTOMER discovered the powerful anti-pollution action of Armeria maritima, the only seaside plant that survived the Erika oil tanker disaster, capable of filtering and depolluting the contaminated water. PHYTOMER then launched its first anti-pollution product, Souffle Marin.Since then PHYTOMER researchers have created an advanced solution that comes in the form of an amazing sorbet cream, CITYLIFE Face and Eye Contour Sorbet Cream. CITYLIFE sweeps away toxic micro-particles and repairs skin damage caused by pollution. Its prowess comes not only from its sorbet texture, in perfect affinity with the skin, but also from its high-tech formulation composed of: CITYSAFE complex, a trio of anti-pollution biotech marine sugars. OLIGOMER®, an emblematic ingredient of the brand, providing true mineral replenishment for the skin. And what is great about it, is it’s also, suitable for the eye contour, CITYLIFE re-oxygenates tired eyes while it diffuses mineral water into dehydrated skin.Fast forward to 2018 when they launched another award winning product: CITYLIFE Ultra Cleansing Flash Peel. This is the first of its kind, a pollution defense deep cleanser. Power packed with a high concentration of exfoliating enzymes, it leaves the skin healthy, purified and with an incredible glow. So, the long and the short of it is: pollution bad, antioxidants good. Until we find a way to remove these nasties from our environment, it’s essential to maintain a good skincare regime that protects your skin from chemicals in the air and prevents them harming your health. Urban living will always be full of things to stress you out, but, thankfully, damaged skin doesn’t have to be one of them. Now, where did I put that glass of red?
