The soothing serum that reduces breakouts overnight: Real reviews

The soothing serum that reduces breakouts overnight: Real reviews

by Jo Boyden on Feb 26 2026
Finding a breakout treatment when you have sensitive skin we know can feel next to impossible, and most "acne" products are packed with ingredients that leave your skin feeling stripped, dry, and even more irritated than before! Well, if you’ve been searching for a way to clear your complexion while keeping your skin barrier happy and hydrated, you’re in the right place! There is a "miracle" ingredient from the beehive that is changing the game for sensitive, breakout-prone skin and we have it in a serum! Keep reading to find out all about “propolis” and the serum BC customers can’t get enough off! Real results, real reviews from customers who are nothing short of obsessed!   So, what exactly is Propolis? Propolis is one of nature's most powerful healing ingredients, and if you're not already using it on your breakouts, you're about to wonder how you ever managed without it! It’s a sticky, resinous substance that bees create to protect their hives and has been used for centuries in traditional medicine for its remarkable antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and skin-healing properties, oh and it’s packed with antioxidants too! And when it's formulated into a serum? It becomes one of the most effective overnight breakout treatments you'll ever try! Not harsh. Not drying. Just genuinely healing, soothing, and fast-acting making it the perfect solution for those with sensitives or reactive skin.   The product we are all obsessed with Pevonia Soothing Propolis Concentrate This isn't just any serum! It’s a high-performance concentrate designed specifically for skin that needs that little extra T.L.C! Most breakout treatments work by doing one of two things, drying out the pimple or killing bacteria. And while that sounds logical in theory, they can often leave your skin irritated, flaky, red, and sometimes even worse than when you started! Pevonia’s Soothing Propolis Concentrate is different! Instead of attacking your skin, this naturally soothing antibacterial serum supports it! Instead of stripping and drying, it soothes and heals. Instead of causing irritation, it actively reduces inflammation. In fact, it’ll help your skin actually heal faster and more gently than anything else you’ve tried! It will also help regulate any excess oil you might be producing! Support clearer pores, calm visible redness, strengthen the skin barrier and reduce the likelihood of future breakouts. And the result? Breakouts that heal faster, look less angry, and fade without leaving behind the redness or marks that traditional treatments often cause. It is a micro-emulsified serum, which is a fancy way of saying it’s formulated to absorb instantly and deeply. It targets micro-inflammation (the redness you see before a pimple fully forms) and helps to decongest the skin without ever feeling heavy or greasy. It’s light, it smells divine (a subtle, natural aroma), and it’s become the "go-to" for those dealing with hormonal breakouts, irritation, redness, sensitivity and general congestion!   How it works overnight While we sleep, our skin goes into repair mode. By applying the Propolis Concentrate in the evening, you’re giving your skin the exact tools it needs to reduce swelling and redness during its peak healing hours. Most users report that by the time they wake up, the "anger" of a breakout has significantly subsided, and the skin feels cool, calm, and hydrated. Don’t just take our word for it though! The real proof is in the results of the BC customers!   What BC customers are saying “I can't go a day without this! The Soothing Propolis Concentrate brightens my skin immediately giving it an amazing glow. I use it every night and it must work miracles overnight because my skin looks flawless and bumps are reduced significantly by morning. This is truly a remarkable product, after trying sooooooo many antibiotics, creams and skincare products I have finally found a product to keep my breakouts at an all time low.” – Shelley M “I have problems with adult acne as well as having sensitive skin. This product helped calm my skin down as well as reduce my acne and made my skin feel really soft again. A little goes a long way too” – Laura  “Soothing Propolis Concentrate! I love this product, i bought it while i was pregnant and had severe hormonal acne and it seemed to calm and soothe my skin and reduced the "angriness" of my skin! Since having baby I have continued to use this product and it has since reduced my pore size and also made my skin more evenly toned. It glides on smoothly when applying to skin and a little goes a very long way. So the price is only minuscule when you think about how long this product will last! I recommend to anyone who has skin problems as it also contains anti microbial properties and antibacterial to keep those yukky breakouts to a minimum!” – Melinda  “This product has completely reduced my breakouts and makes my skin feel nourished after every use, I am so glad I decided to try it.” - Kelly O “My skin is hypersensitive and extractions during facials were extremely painful for me until I started using this propolis. I use it every morning and besides the calming effect and reduction of redness, it has helped me to control breakouts and my skin looks more even. Highly recommended!” – Arlen C    Used consistently, this serum helps create a more balanced environment within the skin, meaning fewer flare-ups and faster recovery when breakouts do appear. Simply apply to clean skin once or twice daily, focusing on breakout-prone areas. Follow with a barrier-supporting moisturiser and SPF during the day.   Remember, breakouts don't have to take a week to heal. With the right treatment (one that soothes, heals, and supports your skin rather than stripping and irritating it) you can wake up to noticeably clearer, calmer skin. Propolis serum is that treatment. Natural, effective, gentle, and genuinely transformative, it's the overnight breakout solution that finally lives up to the promise!
Breaking out at 40 and beyond? How to fight adult acne

Breaking out at 40 and beyond? How to fight adult acne

by Jo Boyden on Mar 14 2025
Waking to breakouts when you thought acne was behind you? Feeling frustrated but not sure what to do? Believe it or not, adult acne is more common than you think, and it can be just as frustrating, if not more, than those pesky teenage pimples we all endured! From hormonal changes and stress to skincare mistakes and environmental factors, there are a number of reasons why blemishes can return in adulthood. The good news? With the right targeted skincare routine and lifestyle changes, you can achieve clear skin once again! Keep reading as we discuss what’s causing your breakouts and, more importantly, our expert approved tips and solutions on how to treat them!   Why you’re getting breakouts - the most common triggers for adult acne Unfortunately, adult acne can be caused by a number of factors, often different from the breakouts we experienced in our teens, so it’s important to try and identify your specific root cause. Everything from hormonal imbalances, stress, diet, and even the medication you might be taking can contribute to your breakouts. Here are the most common triggers:  1. Hormonal Imbalances If you are experiencing blemishes and acne in your 40’s and 50’s, chances are it could be to do with perimenopause and the menopause. And if you had a history of pimples and acne as a teenager, you’ll more likely to be susceptible to getting acne flare ups now too! Unfortunately, fluctuations in our hormones, particularly androgens (like testosterone), can increase oil production, this excess oil can then mix with bacteria, dead skin and debris leading to clogged pores and breakouts! This is why acne also often flares up around the menstrual cycle, and during pregnancy, as well as due to conditions like polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). 2. Stress When you're stressed, your body produces more cortisol, which can stimulate oil glands and worsen acne. Stress-induced inflammation can also slow healing, making breakouts last longer. 3. Skincare & Makeup products Using the wrong skincare or makeup or simply overloading your skin with it, can clog pores and trigger breakouts. Too many products, as well as heavy, oil-based, or comedogenic products can worsen acne, while harsh cleansers can strip your skin and in turn cause it to go into overdrive and overproduce oil, which is where the cycle comes into play!  4. Diet Some studies suggest that high-glycemic foods (like white bread, potatoes, rice, cereals), dairy, and processed sugars can trigger acne by increasing inflammation and oil production so if you are ingesting much of these foods it could be one reason for your increased blemishes! 5. Lifestyle It can be hard to get that 8-9 hours of sleep a night believe me! But lack of sleep, as well as other lifestyle choices like smoking and drinking alcohol and sugary drinks can and will affect your skin in one way or another and it’s usually through the increase in blemishes. 6. Environmental Factors Pollution, sweat, and even your phone screen or pillowcase can harbor bacteria that contribute to breakouts. Regularly cleaning your phone and changing pillowcases can help reduce bacteria exposure. 6. Medications Certain medications, including steroids, birth control pills, and antidepressants, can disrupt hormones or increase oil production, leading to breakouts. 7. Over-Exfoliating or Harsh Skincare Too much exfoliation or harsh acne treatments can strip the skin’s natural barrier, leading to more oil production and irritation, making acne worse instead of better!   How to treat breakouts and adult acne 1. Cleanse gently (but effectively!) Many people with acne-prone skin make the mistake of over-cleansing or using harsh scrubs, which can strip the skin and lead to even more breakouts. Instead, opt for a gentle cleanser with acne-fighting ingredients like salicylic acid. We highly recommend Hubislab A.C Clearing Purifying Cleansing Gel. It’s a soothing gel-based cleanser which has been especially formulated (salicylic acid and powerful antioxidant green tea) for congested and acne prone skin to completely but gently clear pores, removing makeup, dirt and grime from the skin without over-drying, all whilst protecting the skin against oxidative damage. 2. Don’t skimp on moisturiser It’s a common misconception that oily or acne-prone skin doesn’t need moisture! The truth is, when your skin is dehydrated it can actually produce even more oil to over compensate, leading to further breakouts, eek! You do need to be careful about the moisturisers you choose though! When looking for the best moisturisers for acne prone skin, you’ll want to choose lightweight, non-comedogenic moisturisers that hydrate without clogging pores, like the ProCorrective Clear-Control Moisturiser for balancing hydration and oil control. It’s carefully selected non-comedogenic (non-pore clogging) super skin-clearing, calming and hydrating ingredients (we are talking Zinc Chloride, Hydrolyzed Wheat Protein, Cinnamon, Thyme, Mallow, Witch Hazel, Tea Tree Extract, Niacinamide, Glycolic and Salicylic Acids, Microcitrus Australasica, a.k.a. Caviar Lime and Hyaluronic Acid!)combine to deeply target acne by rapidly clearing away blemishes and clogging, while moisturising and smoothing uneven texture. It’s so good! In fact the whole Pevonia ProCorrective line is outstanding for the management of adult acne! 3. Exfoliate regularly (but don’t overdo it!) Exfoliation is key to unclogging pores and preventing breakouts, but doing it daily can damage your skin barrier. Stick to gentle chemical exfoliants with AHAs or BHAs (like glycolic or salicylic acid) two times per week to keep your skin smooth and clear. We love Pevonia Enzymo Spherides Peeling Cream. Do not let the name ‘peeling cream’ put you off though! Papaya and Pineapple have been selected for their enzyme peeling action, an action that gently digests away impurities, sebum, toxins and the dead skin cells, instead of abrading or burning them off. So, it’s gentle, really gentle, and it’s effective too! Nothing makes skin feel cleaner, lighter or more purified than this jar of goodness and it’s easy to use! Simply apply a thin layer on cleansed skin, wet the fingertips with warm water, this will help to “wake up” the enzymes, then leave them to do their thing for 5-10 minutes, then rinse away.  4. Spot treat your skin When a breakout appears, resist the urge to squeeze it please! And yes, I know how tempting it can be, but squeezing spots can spread bacteria and exacerbate your acne! Instead, use a targeted spot treatment with ingredients like benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid, sulfur, or tea tree oil to reduce inflammation and speed up healing. 5. Manage your stress Easier said than done we know, but there are some amazing aids and coping mechanisms when it comes to stress. Try to give yourself a little “me” time. This might feel like an impossibility especially if you are a busy, working mum! But we are simply talking even a few minutes a day to soak in a bath, read your book, listen to a podcast, meditate, exercise or simply listen to music! Breathing exercises can also be game-changing and I know have seriously helped me! One of the main symptoms of perimenopause is anxiety and being in my mid 40’s I have definitely been hard hit. I find music and breathing has helped no end. I’m telling you just a little time out can make a noticeable difference in your skin’s clarity.   6. Choose your makeup wisely Heavy, oil-based foundations can clog pores and worsen acne so you’ll want to opt for non-comedogenic, breathable makeup formulas, and always remove your makeup before bed to prevent buildup and irritation! Mineral makeup is the best makeup for acne prone skin, its free from common irritants such as fragrances, preservatives, and synthetic dyes, making it less likely to cause breakouts or allergic reactions plus so many formulations are lightweight and breathable, so you literally feel like you aren’t wearing makeup (even though it will help conceal those blemishes) and will literally allow your inflamed skin to breathe and not be clogged! I know I am biased but I have been using ELES Mineral Makeup for YEARS. And I will never use anything else. I can hand on heart say their products have helped my skin, prevented me from getting spots even! I personally love the ELES Mineral Sheer Tint and ELES Mineral Powder Foundation, but the no. 1 ELES best-seller is the Liquid Powder Mineral Foundation, and the reviews speak volumes! All three products are mineral, filled to the brim with skin friendly, anti-ageing ingredients and do not ever clog pores! Brillant stuff. 7. Watch your diet If you are struggling with adult acne, you should try and cut down on high-glycemic foods which have been linked to acne flare-ups. Also try reducing your intake of processed sugars and dairy products. Instead eat a diet rich in antioxidants (like leafy greens, nuts, and berries) and healthy fats (like fish, avocado and unsalted nuts), and increase hydration to help balance skin. 8. Try to get enough sleep Sometimes getting that 7-9 hours of solid sleep a night can seem like an impossibility, I know! But sleep really is essential for skin health because it allows for cellular repair, collagen production, and hydration balance. During deep sleep, our body boosts blood flow to the skin, helping to reduce inflammation, prevent premature ageing, and promote a radiant complexion (crazy right?) 9. Stay kind to your skin and consistent with your routine From spots to adult acne, we know how frustrating breakouts can be! But constantly switching products can often make things worse! Remember to treat your skin with gentle, nourishing care and give products time to work their magic. Clear skin doesn’t happen overnight! Sticking to a consistent skincare routine with the right products for your skin type really is key to preventing breakouts in the long run.   By following these simple yet effective tips, you can take control of adult acne and enjoy a clearer, healthier complexion, we promise!

How to treat adult acne: The skincare line that actually works

by Jo Boyden on Jan 24 2025
Find yourself suddenly dealing with adult acne? The unexpected breakouts, stubborn spots, irritated skin? Believe me when I say you are not alone! Here at BC we get customers asking us why they might be suffering from acne in their 40’s and beyond all the time as well as the best solutions. Well, we can’t recommend enough a new (tried-and-tested by us) collection from Pevonia that tackles adult acne head-on while being kind to your skin! Whether your breakouts are stress-related, hormonal, or perhaps genetic, this routine will make a huge difference to your skin and your confidence! Cue Pevonia’s ProCorrective Line, a game-changing solution for tackling adult acne at its root!   Firstly, why are you suffering from adult acne? Adult acne can be incredibly frustrating, especially when you thought breakouts were a thing of the past! Unlike teenage breakouts though, adult acne often stems from a combination of factors from hormone changes to stress to genetics to pollution and more! Hormonal fluctuations often play a big part in adult acne though, whether it be during menstruation, pregnancy, perimenopause or menopause, this is because it can increase oil production leading to clogged pores which can trigger breakouts. Androgens, particularly testosterone, stimulate oil glands, worsening breakouts. These hormonal shifts also increase inflammation and disrupt the skin's barrier, making it more prone to bacterial overgrowth and persistent blemishes! Stress, which many of us adults can feel on a daily basis! Elevates cortisol levels, stimulating oil glands and worsening acne. And then there are the environmental factors like pollution or bacteria from touching your face which may clog pores, while certain skincare or makeup products can exacerbate the issue. Unfortunately what we eat and drink can also play a role, with high-glycemic foods and dairy potentially contributing! And then of course there are genetics (thanks parents!) and underlying medical conditions, such as hormonal imbalances or PCOS which can further increase the likelihood of adult acne. Eek!   Why Choose the Pevonia ProCorrective Line? Whatever your reason for suffering from adult acne, following a targeted skincare routine can make all the difference. And we might indeed be biased but Pevonia’s ProCorrective is one of the best targeted adult acne lines on the market especially when it comes to hormonal acne! Salicylic acid: What is it and how will it benefit your skin

Salicylic acid: What is it and how will it benefit your skin

by Jo Boyden on Aug 17 2024
Whether you’re battling breakouts, dealing with oily skin, or just looking for a way to keep your complexion clear, you’ll want to ensure salicylic acid is an ingredient in your skincare! But what exactly is salicylic acid? And how does it transform you skin? Keep reading for everything you need to know about salicylic acid—why it’s so effective, how to use it, and why it deserves a spot in your skincare routine. What is salicylic acid? Salicylic acid is a beta hydroxy acid (BHA) known for its exfoliating and anti-inflammatory properties, commonly used in skincare. it penetrates deep into the pores, dissolving excess oil and exfoliating dead skin cells. This helps prevent and treat breakouts, blackheads, and whiteheads. Unlike some harsher acne treatments, salicylic acid is gentle yet effective, making it suitable for frequent use (we are talking 2-3 times a week). Incorporating salicylic acid into your skincare routine can lead to clearer, smoother skin! How does salicylic acid work? By breaking down the bonds between dead skin cells, salicylic acid encourages their shedding, which helps to prevent pore blockages that lead to breakouts. Is salicylic acid suitable for all skin types? Salicylic acid is ideal for those with oily or acne-prone skin, as it helps control excess oil production and prevents the formation of new pimples. However, it can also benefit other skin types, particularly those who are susceptible to the occasional breakout or congested skin. Can salicylic acid cause skin irritation? Salicylic acid can sometimes cause skin irritation, especially if you use it excessively or tend to have sensitive skin.  Common signs of irritation include redness, dryness, peeling, or a burning sensation. Just before you test the product first before applying all over your face. How often should you use salicylic acid? How often you use skincare formulated with salicylic acid really depends on the product itself as well your skin specific skin type. If you are new to salicylic acid, we recommend you start with using it once or twice a week and gradually increase to daily use if your skin tolerates it. It's also important to follow up with a good moisturiser to keep your skin hydrated. Can you use salicylic acid with other skincare ingredients? Yes, you can use salicylic acid with other skincare ingredients, but it's important to be cautious. Combining salicylic acid with soothing and hydrating ingredients like niacinamide and hyaluronic acid, can work wonders for your skin. However, be careful when combining it with other exfoliants like glycolic acid or retinol, as this can increase the risk of irritation. It's best to introduce these ingredients gradually into your routine or use them on alternate days to avoid over-exfoliating your skin. How to incorporate salicylic acid into your skincare routine Start with a cleanser containing salicylic acid, using it slowly to allow your skin to adjust. If your skin tolerates it well, you can gradually increase usage or introduce additional products like serums or spot treatments. Always follow with a moisturiser and sunscreen, as salicylic acid can make your skin more sensitive to the sun. The best salicylic acid products Vie Collection Cleansing Gel with Glycolic, Lactic and Salicylic Acids - This foaming cleansing gel combines glycolic, lactic and salicylic acids to stimulate cellular activity, break the intercellular glue between dead cells and thoroughly cleanse skin. If you have oily skin, you’ll know the struggle of managing shine and breakouts all too well. But having oily skin doesn't have to be a daily battle! With the right skincare routine, you can control excess oil, minimize the appearance of pores, and keep your skin looking fresh and balanced throughout the day! Whether you're dealing with midday shine, frequent blemishes or seasonal flare-ups, keep reading for the best skincare routine for oily skin so you can achieve a clear, matt and healthy complexion all year round. What is oily skin? Caused by genetics, dehydrated skin and overactive sebaceous glands producing excess sebum, oily skin is a common skin type that leaves you with a slick shine (or greasy appearance). People with oily skin often struggle with large pores too which can get easily clogged with sweat and oils, this is why oily skin has a tendency to breakout where pores are more prominent such as the cheeks and T-zone. The best skincare routine for oily skin Step 1: Start with a purifying cleanser As with any skin type, perfecting your skincare routine is paramount. First things first, prep your skin with a good cleanser formulated with ingredients that will help reduce excessive oil and prevent the plugging of pores that can lead to acne breakouts! Niacinamide is a game-changes for oily skin! It’s a versatile and powerhouse skincare ingredient that works to regulate excess sebum production and to possibly even lower your skin’s sebum excretion over time! Plus, niacinamide is also packed with antibacterial properties - all while keeping things gentle for your skin. We recommend: Naturys Purifying Mousse. Its beautifully light, ideal for daily cleansing and is formulated with the purifying properties of niacinamide to thoroughly, yet gently cleanse skin removing excess oil, dirt, grime and impurities. The result? Skin feels beautifully fresh and baby soft! How to use: Apply over the damp skin and massage gently into skin morning and night. Rinse with warm water. Step 2: Use a Hydrating serum Just as with any skin type, oily skin needs nourishment and serums are perfect for that because they are lightweight and easily absorbed. Just be sure to use a non-greasy serum! A purifying serum formulated with niacinamide, and hyaluronic acid will keep your skin well-hydrated while helping to balance your oil production too! We recommend: Naturys Deep Purifying Serum. Containing a purifying complex of niacinamide, bakuchiol, hyaluronic acid, peptides and vitamin c, this serum, specifically designed for oily skin is both nourishing and soothing. Enriched with olive oil microcapsules that melt when in contact with the skin, it helps correct overproduction of sebum, enlarged pores, acne and skin prone to redness. Crazy right? How to use: Apply a few drops to clean skin in the morning and evening, lightly massaging with circular movements to absorb the microcapsules. Step 3: Always apply moisturiser Now that you’ve applied your serum, it’s imperative you properly moisturise your skin too. One of the biggest misconceptions about oily skin is that it doesn’t need moisturiser. Contrary to popular belief moisturising does not make oily skin worse. Moisturising actually helps to regulate oil production! Often people who struggle with oily skin, don’t give their skin the nourishment it needs and in turn cause their skin to dehydrate, their skin then tries to compensate by producing too much oil! And there we have ourselves a vicious cycle. The key is to find a lightweight moisturiser specifically targeted to oily skin types that won’t clog pores or leave a greasy residue. We recommend: Naturys Face Cream Age-Purifying. It's anti-ageing and the ideal solution for oily skin! Formulated with bakuchiol, niacinamide and peptides it balances skin, keeps oil at bay, reduces enlarged pores, purifies the skin and battles imperfections! Oh and it reduces wrinkles and signs of ageing too! How to use: Use morning or evening all over your face and neck and décolleté, after thoroughly cleansing skin. Step 4: Don’t forget your sunscreen As a general rule of thumb, sunscreen should be the last product you apply. It's also important to ensure you allow the rest of your products to properly absorb before adding sunscreen on top. We recommend waiting a few minutes after you've applied your last skincare product. We know many sunscreens can feel greasy on the skin so clearly that’s the last thing you want to apply to your already oily face right? But I’m here to preach to you the importance of sunscreen for all skin types and that it’s, unfortunately, necessary to wear every. single. day come rain or shine. Just make sure if your skin is oily to look for lighter oil free sunscreens that won’t feel heavy on your skin. We recommend: Hubislab - Post Rays UV Protect Sun Block SPF50+ PA+++ Ideal for all skin types including oily skin, this high factor sunscreen provides complete UV and antioxidant protection while preventing dryness, dullness and hyperpigmentation. Rich in Acetyl Hexapeptide-8 and hydrolysed collagen it keeps skin nourished, healthy and elastic, while the invisible matte formula applies smoothly and stays on all day! How to use: Apply a generous amount of sunscreen to your face and neck every morning, even on cloudy days. Step 5: Once or twice a week exfoliate skin Oily skin responds well to physical exfoliation because when those dead skin cells are removed, oil is less likely to get trapped and therefore less likely to cause breakouts. Just make sure you avoid over-exfoliating as it can lead to redness and irritation. We recommend: Naturys Purifying Peeling AHA Solution. Formulated with Mandelic acid, Alpha Hydroxy Acids, Tartaric acid and Lemon extract, this effective exfoliant solution promotes cell turnover and regenerates oily skin. Using this product regularly (once or twice a week), stimulates microcirculation and the physiological production of collagen and hyaluronic acid. How to use: Apply to skin, leave on for 10-12 minutes, massage gently and remove the product with warm water.   Additional step: Use a face mask If you have oily skin, we highly recommend that once a week, you use a treatment mask. Masks formulated with clay and charcoal are best for oily skin types as they naturally draw out impurities and absorb excess oil while calming any irritation, oh and they will ensure your skin feels 100 % refreshed a squeaky clean! Now that you’ve completed your skincare routine for oily skin, here’s a few tips when it comes to your makeup! Use a primer! You wont regret it. If you’re a lover of foundation but are a little over it sliding off your face as the day goes on, you need to introduce a primer into your life! A good primer can be a godsend for those with oily skin, not only because it helps makeup last longer but a good mattifying primer will also tackle areas of high shine, soften the appearance of fine lines and pores too! We recommend: ELES’s Pore Perfecting Face Primer. It's a light-textured, skin smoothing, oil-free primer that not only combats shine but absorbs oil and reduces the appearance of pores and wrinkles at the same time! The result – flawless looking foundation as soon as it’s applied, and it will stay put all day long too! How to use: Smooth over clean, moisturised skin. Apply mineral matte foundation If you are prone to oily skin, it’s best to steer clear of foundation with a dewy finish and instead opt for a matte, semi-matte powder or oil-free foundation. A handy powder compact should be the one staple in your beauty bag, that can come with you wherever you go for those times you need to do a little ‘touch up’. Just be sure to avoid illuminating powder with shimmer as this will only draw attention to skin texture and exacerbate pore size. Instead, opt for a translucent pore-minimising and oil-absorbent powder. Mineral makeup works wonders on oily skin because the particles tend to absorb moisture, preventing shine. We recommend: ELES Mineral Powder Foundation this best-selling foundation enables you to adjust your coverage from a translucent powder to a buildable coverage foundation with a richer, more opaque finish. What’s more, it’s formulated with skin loving ingredients including vitamins A & E, so it’ll provide antioxidant protection as well as condition skin! Oh and it will not clog your pores! How to use: Swirl a large powder brush onto powder and tap off excess. Apply over entire face in circular motions for best coverage. If power isn’t your thing and you’re a lover of liquid foundations but are concerned about slippage, fear not, weve got the foundation for you! We recommend: ELES Liquid Powder Mineral Foundation is ELES’s global best-seller for many a reason! One being its long-lasting staying power no matter what your skin condition. It’s packed with goodness including an exclusive multi mineral complex as well as vitamins A, C & E but its formula while it goes on as a silky liquid, sets to a soft powder finish, perfect for those with combination and oily skin. What’s more, it allows skin to breathe freely, so it won’t clog up those pores leading to unwanted blemishes! How to use: Apply directly onto moisturised skin or over a face primer. Using a foundation brush or problender sponge, sweep onto skin starting at the centre of the face and blending outward and down to the neck. Just remember consistency is key when it comes to managing your oily skin. Stick to your routine, and over time, you’ll notice a reduction in oiliness and breakouts! With the right products and a consistent routine, oily skin can be kept under control, giving you a clear, radiant complexion.

Acne - your most asked questions answered by the BC experts

by Jo Boyden on Jan 19 2024
From stress inducing activities (hello school holidays) to overindulging (another cheese platter anyone?) the December/January holiday season (or silly season as we like to call it!) are rife with potential triggers that can lead to acne flare ups! That’s why this time of year is when we, at BC, get inundated with your questions about acne.Whether acne is something you’ve lived with for many years, or it’s decided to crop up now as an unwelcome adult guest, acne is one of the most common skin woes and we are here to help! We've listed the most frequently asked questions about acne and tapped into the wisdom of our skincare experts to get you the best possible answers. Keep scrolling to find out what they are… Q: Why am I getting acne as an adult, I thought acne was for teenagers?Sadly acne isn't only reserved for awkward high school years. Several factors can contribute to acne in adults. These include;hormonal changes: This often occurs during menstruation, pregnancy, perimenopause, or menopause. Hormonal imbalances can stimulate the sebaceous glands, leading to increased oil production and breakouts.Stress: High stress levels can wreak havoc on your skin. Stress triggers the release of certain hormones, such as cortisol, which can stimulate oil production and contribute to acne. Additionally, stress may lead to unhealthy lifestyle habits, like poor sleep and an imbalanced diet, which can further exacerbate skin issues.Diet: While the link between specific foods and acne isn't universally agreed upon, some people find that certain dietary factors such as high-glycemic foods and dairy products can impact their skin and increase the risk of acne.Skincare and makeup products: The products you use on your skin could be a culprit. Some ingredients in skincare or makeup products may clog pores or irritate the skin, leading to breakouts. Ensure the products you are using are of good quality and are suitable for your specific skin type too!Environmental factors: Exposure to environmental pollutants, such as smog or certain chemicals, can contribute to skin issues. Additionally, humidity may increase the likelihood of acne. Not good news this time of year!Genetics: Your genetic makeup plays a role in your skin's characteristics including its susceptibility to acne! If your parents or close relatives had acne, you might be more prone to it as well. Thanks parents!Medications: Certain medications can have side effects that include acne. If you suspect your medication might be contributing to your acne, it's best to have a chat with your GP.Over-cleansing or products that are too harsh for your skin: Sometimes, the desire to combat acne can lead to over-cleansing or the use of products which you think will help but are in fact too harsh for your skin! This can strip the skin of its natural oils, prompting it to produce even more oil in response. More oil produced equals more breakouts! Q: Can I blame overindulging in chocolate for my breakouts?Sorry to all you chocoholics out there but the link between chocolate and acne isn’t actually crystal clear. It's more about your overall diet, which does include sugar (and dairy too) so if you’ve been hitting the cheese board like me this silly season, or indulging in too many sweet treats, this definitely could be impacting your skin. Remember everything in moderation! And instead try to indulge in foods such as almonds, blueberries and avocados as they are among a range of foods which may help to reduce and prevent inflammation. Q: How can I get rid of my pimples overnight? Some spot treatments can work wonders at reducing, and in some cases eliminating, unwanted blemishes overnight. This is because they encourage rapid healing by controlling bacteria, reducing inflammation and diminishing the follicular accumulation of keratin. For the most effective results look for spot treatments formulated with ingredients such as benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid. We highly recommend Phytomers Oligopur Blemish Target Gel as the best spot treatment! It targets blemishes with precision, rapidly improving the skin’s appearance and eliminating spots almost overnight! Simply apply a small amount of product to your pimples and let the powerful ingredients keep your skin follicles clean to achieve an even and bright complexion by morning. Q: Can following a specific skincare routine really help my acne? Absolutely! Consistency is key. A gentle cleanser, non-comedogenic moisturiser, and targeted treatments can help keep acne at bay. Also, don't forget sunscreen – it's like armour for your skin, yes even for those of us with acne! And I know it sounds counterintuitive, slathering sunscreen all over acne flareups but believe me when I say avoiding sunscreen can worsen the appearance of acne, and if the skin gets sunburnt, the symptoms of acne can be painfully exasperated.Just be sure to choose your sunscreen wisely. Using the right sunscreen can prevent and heal acne, soothe the skin, keep dark spots and clogged pores at bay, all while protecting from harmful UV rays.We love Medicalia Sunscreen SPF 40 with Blue Light Shield. Q: Can I wear makeup if I have acne prone skin?Absolutely! But you must be careful with what you use! Look for non-comedogenic, oil-free formulas. Mineral makeup can be a game-changer as it doesn’t contain any chemical nasties or additional oils, nor will it aggravate skin or clog pores. Genius! Here at BC from the staff to the experts we all love ELES Cosmetics Liquid Powder Mineral Foundation. And for more translucent coverage the ELES Mineral Foundation Powder. Both products are perfect for those with skin sensitives, are free of any chemical nasties, provide effortless and natural coverage and most importantly will allow your skin to breathe freely (so no pore clogging in sight) plus you'll feel like you aren’t wearing makeup at all! What more could you ask for?For more information on makeup for acne prone skin, including the best makeup tips click here. My pimples really need popping, is it ok to do so?No! Experts cringe at the thought of DIY extractions. Popping pimples can lead to scarring and more inflammation. Let it be, and consider a spot treatment instead. Are all pimples the same?Nope! From blackheads and whiteheads to cystic acne, the acne family can get a little confusing! And each type of pimple or acne requires a slightly different approach too! To understand more about the type of acne you could be suffering from click here. Could stress and lack of sleep being affecting my skin?Yes sir-eee. Lack of sleep and high stress levels can trigger hormonal imbalances leading to breakouts. Try to prioritise self-care, practice relaxation techniques and try to get to bed earlier if you can for ample beauty sleep. If you struggle with getting to sleep make sure you turn off devices an hour before bedtime and instead listen to some soothing sounds. We love listening to the ambient relaxation playlist on Spotify.

With no moisture at all, your skin would become dehydrated and begin to over-compensate by producing more oil! Something you definitely don’t need when it comes to oily, blemish and acne prone skin!Instead look for lightweight, oil-free moisturisers that won’t feel heavy on your skin.Try: Phytomer Acnipur Blemish Solution Fluid. This lightweight gel-cream works amazingly on problematic skin reducing overall breakoutsThe formula also helps eliminate shine for a clean, matte complexion. The Sun, heat and humidity can also cause oil glands to become overactive, which in turn can lead to acne breakouts! To prevent these breakouts choose and oil-free, non-comedogenic sunscreen and apply it liberally daily! Be aware of what you are eating What you eat can have a huge impact your skin's health so it’s imperative if you are suffering from acne to Incorporate a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, and limit your intake of processed foods and sugary treats. Consuming foods high in antioxidants and vitamins can help promote clear, radiant skin too!Try;Fatty fish such as salmon and tunaYellow and orange fruits and vegetables such as carrots, apricots, and sweet potatoesSpinach, kale and other dark green and leafy vegetablesTomatoesBlueberriesAvocadoswhole-wheat breadbrown ricequinoaSoybeans Reduce your stress levels Sounds easier said than done I know, we all have those days, weeks, months even where we are super stressed but said stress can lead to acne flare ups! This is because stress-related hormone CRH can bind to receptors in the skin’s sebaceous glands, increasing oil production. Excess oil production can then cause pimples. So, if you keep breaking out and just can’t understand why, stress might be to blame, so try to relax!Try; listening to relaxation music or meditate. Also, something as simple as taking a relaxing bubble bath every evening can really help. Exercise is also imperative! While exercising will increase blood flow, helping nourish skin cells and keeping them vital, it has also been accountable for reducing stress-related acne. Keep your phone clean! And your pillowcase too! Yup, a sudden breakout can be from something as simple as your phone or pillowcase (well anything that touches your face really that could be hosts for harmful bacteria!) And anytime you hold your phone to your face or lie on your pillowcase you are spreading the bacteria to your skin. So, if you haven’t done so for a while, try sanitizing your phone screen and wash that pillowcase of yours more often, it could make a big difference to your skin. Hydrate inside and out We all need to stay hydrated every single day, after all our bodies can’t operate effectively without water, but when I say stay hydrated, I mean drive plenty of water and drink it throughout the day, 8 glasses minimum!Hydration is key to maintaining healthy skin as it helps flush out toxins and keeps your skin looking plump and radiant. Breakouts? Why you’re getting reoccurring pimples

by Jo Boyden on Jun 02 2023
I’m pretty certain when I say, we’ve likely all suffered from pimples many a time in our lives, and just when you think they are behind you, you suddenly get another bout of unwanted blemishes! Pimples are actually a very common skin concern for people of all ages and skin types. But have you ever wondered why those pesky pimples keep cropping up, even when we are in our 40’s, 50’s and older even? And often in specific areas of our face too! Maybe you tend to get them around your chin more? Or on your nose or forehead perhaps?Well, according to the ancient Chinese practice of face mapping, the location of your pimples can actually tell you a lot about your overall health. That’s right dependant on where your pimples are appearing on your face, they can actually mean different things, from digestive issues to hormonal fluctuation. Keep reading to learn all about the importance of face mapping, so next time you get an outbreak you’ll know what the cause may be and how you can help to fix it. Firstly though, what is face mapping?Face mapping is an ancient Chinese and Ayurvedic practice that links different “zones” of the face (eg cheeks, chin, forehead) to different organs or glands in the body. The theory is that when there is an imbalance or toxicity in the body (in one of the different organs), it can manifest as pimples in the corresponding zone on the face. What are the different zones and what do pimples in these areas mean? The foreheadIf you often find yourself battling pimples in this area, it could be an indicator of digestive issues. Take a closer look at your diet, up the fibre and make sure you're staying hydrated too. Cutting back on alcohol, sugar and processed foods and incorporating more fruits and veggies could help clear up those forehead blemishes. Be sure to chew food well and take probiotics too.Between the browsBlemishes between the brows can be the sign of an overloaded liver. Liver issues can be indicative of sleep deprivation, heightened emotions (stress, sadness, anger, worry), or an excess of sugar, fats or alcohol in your diet. Your lymphatic circulation may also be stagnant and could use a little boost so try starting your morning with a hot water with lemon, drink plenty of fluids throughout the day, decrease your intake of spicy foods, alcohol, dairy, and sorry to say it, coffee too! And up the essential fatty acids, omega 3 and 6 in your diet, avocado and olive oil on your salad will help. Finally rest up, like you, your liver needs plenty of time to rest and recuperate.TemplesThe corners of the forehead, by the temples represent the kidneys.Lack of sleep, a poor diet and dehydration impacts our kidney function. Another factor may be a mineral deficiency, specifically iron too. To help, take proactive steps to support the kidneys, including decreasing stress, consuming enough fluids (spring water, coconut water, herbal tea, hydrolytes!), making sure you get enough sleep, also be mindful of your diet (eat ample amounts of fruits and vegetables and try to stay away from too much sodium.CheeksIf you notice pimples frequently appearing on your cheeks, it could indicate respiratory issues or allergies, since this area is linked to your lungs. The most common food triggers are dairy, soy, gluten, processed sugar and alcohol – try to eliminate these groups for a month to see how your body reacts with the change and replace with leafy green goodness. Also, pay attention to the air quality in your environment, as pollutants can wreak havoc on your skin.JawlineBreakouts in this area are often linked to hormonal fluctuations, particularly in women. It's not uncommon to experience these pimples around your menstrual cycle. However, persistent acne along the jawline might also be connected to polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) or digestive problems so you might want to get a blood test so that your doctor can get a better understanding of your hormonal levels. This will also help to determine how well your thyroid is functioning too.If you find you do get hormonal breakouts, there are many things you can do to help. Try eliminating caffeine (ok this might be a big ask, so at least try to cut it down), as well as cutting out processed sugar, dried fruit, bread, wine, diary, white flour, gluten, soy, fried foods, peanut butter and fruits like grapes and bananas (high sugar content). Eating a diet rich in omega-3 foods will instead be very beneficial, as will managing stress levels. Taking vitamin D3 supplements and getting regular exercise and adequate sleep can work wonders for bringing your hormones back to their natural balance as well!ChinIf you are prone to pimples on your chin, it could be related to your stomach. Just be sure to step up your fibre intake, avoid hydrogenated fats and processed sugar and try to be vigilant with the times you eat (no eating dinner just before bedtime!)NoseGetting pimples on your nose can be linked to your heart and can sometimes indicate high blood pressure, so get your blood pressure checked if you’re concerned. Look into ways of lowering your cholesterol too like replacing “bad fats” with “good fats” such as Omegas 3 and 6 found in nuts, avocados, fish and flax seed. You may also have a Vitamin B deficiency so consider a vitamin supplement and try to avoid spicy foods.Tip: Massage the area around your nose to improve circulation. While face mapping can provide insights into your pimples underlying causes, it’s essential to adopt some general habits for maintaining healthy skin too. Here are a few tips to get you started: Keep skin beautifully cleansed If we don’t cleanse (and exfoliate) out skin our pores can become clogged with dead skin cells, excess oil and dirt. When a pore gets clogged, it provides the perfect environment for bacteria to thrive and pimples to form! So be sure to keep your face clean by washing it twice a day with a gentle cleanser suitable for your skin type and exfoliate at least once a week. Adopt healthy skincare habits Your skincare routine and habits can play a significant role in the appearance of pimples. Harsh or irritating products can disrupt the skin’s natural balance, leading to inflammation and breakouts. While cleansing and exfoliating is imperative, over-washing or over-exfoliating can strip away essential oils, prompting your skin to produce more sebum as a defence mechanism. Use natural products free of harsh irritants and adopt a healthy daily skincare routine. Don’t pick or squeeze your pimples! As tempting as it may be, avoid picking or popping your pimples, as it can lead to scarring and more breakouts. Eat a balanced diet Studies suggest there is a link between diet and pimples. Consuming sugary and processed foods may increase insulin levels, leading to increased sebum production and acne formation. Additionally, dairy products and foods rich in saturated fats have also been associated with blemish breakouts. Therefore maintaining a balanced diet rich in an array of colourful fruits and veggies can promote overall skin health. Stay hydrated Drink enough water (and herbal tea) consistency throughout the day to keep skin hydrated and flush out those unwanted toxins. Manage stress Stress can be a big indicator of unwanted breakouts. Try and find ways to manage stress. Exercise daily, even if only for a brisk walk, practice meditation, indulge in a good book, relax and listen to your favourite music or simply engage in activities you enjoy that allow you to switch off from stress. Get enough sleep I know we say this time and time again, and I need to practice what I preach, but sleep is SO important, it’s the second most important thing after water. Sleep is not only a time for our body to recoup, but the time that our skin repairs and regenerates too. So as hard as it may be sometimes or impossible if you have a heavy workload, try and put that laptop down, turn off the TV or stop scrolling through Facebook for an evening, and get that quality sleep your body needs and deserves. Just remember your face is a little like a mirror reflecting what’s going on inside your body! By understanding the principles of face mapping you can get a better understanding of your overall health! By paying attention to the specific location of your pimples, you can address any underlying issues. Remember clear skin is not just about how you care for it topically, it’s about nourishing from within too!Want to learn more about the type of pimples you have and how to treat them? Click here. Oily skin do’s and don’ts: Busting the Myths

by Jo Boyden on Apr 11 2023
If you’re fed up with your face feeling greasy every single day, you’re constantly looking for ways to prevent your makeup sliding off your skin by mid-morning, or you’re simply over staring in the mirror and seeing a super shiny complexion staring back (and not because you’ve been adopting the ‘hyper glowing skin’ trend of late), it’s time to get serious about your oily skin condition. When it comes to oily skin there are a number of dos and don’ts. Things you may be doing but shouldn’t! Or things you aren’t doing but should! Keep reading as we bust a number of oily skin myths and provide our top tips on how to manage your oily skin too!Firstly though, it’s good to understand oily skin and why you have it! Despite oily skin being a nuisance, believe it or not, it’s actually not all doom and gloom! Oily skin happens when the sebaceous glands in your skin make too much sebum. Sebum is the waxy, oily substance that protects and hydrates the skin (it’s actually a blessing as it’s vital for keeping the skin super healthy and youthful looking) however, too much sebum can lead to oily skin! This in turn results in your greasy, shiny complexion and can also result in clogged pores, and unwanted acne if not treated! Fear not thought, that’s why we are here to help! Myth #1Oily skin doesn’t need moisturiser, it’ll just make it oilier – WRONGOne of the biggest misconceptions about oily skin is that it doesn’t need moisturiser. Contrary to popular belief moisturising does not make oily skin worse. Oily skin, in fact, needs moisturiser just as much as any other skin type. Moisturising actually helps to regulate oil production and often people who struggle with oily skin can actually have dehydrated skin (skin doesn’t contain enough water) therefore their skin tries to compensate by producing too much oil! And there we have ourselves a vicious cycle. The key is to find a lightweight moisturiser specifically targeted to oily skin types that won’t clog pores or leave a greasy residue.Myth #2Washing your face multiple times a day will help control oil production – WRONGWashing your face too frequently can actually have the opposite effect on oily skin! Over-washing can strip the skin of its natural oils, leading to increased oil production to compensate. Instead wash your face twice daily (morning and night) with a gentle, oil-free foaming cleanser to remove excess oil and grime. Myth #3Oily skin doesn’t need sunscreen – WRONGWe know many sunscreens can feel greasy on the skin so clearly that’s the last thing you want to apply to your already oily face right? But I’m here to preach to you the importance of sunscreen for all skin types and that it’s, unfortunately, necessary to wear every. single. day come rain or shine. Just make sure if your skin is oily to look for lighter oil free sunscreens that won’t feel heavy on your skin.Myth #4Using harsh products such as exfoliators daily will help control your oil production – WRONGUsing harsh products on oily skin can actually exacerbate the problem! Over exfoliating or just using harsh ingredients can strip the skin of its natural oils leading to increased oil production and potentially irritation too. Instead, opt for more gentle non-comedogenic products designed to help control an oily skin complexion. Now that we’ve busted some of the most common oily skin myths, let’s talk about some of the do’s and don’ts for managing it. DoWash your face with a gentle cleanser twice a day as mentioned earlier to remove any excess oil, grime and other impurities from your skin’s surface.Try Pevonia’s Phyto Gel Cleanser. This gorgeous non-drying product provides a delightful natural soft lather for deep cleansing. Saponaria, Rosemary, Lemon, and Pine, precisely blend to rid your skin of impurities and surface toxins and oils.Don’tWash your face more frequently than twice daily or use hot water as both can strip your skin of its natural oils and cause skin to produce even more oil to compensate.Do Use a lotion or toner after cleansing your skin as this will help remove any remaining oil as well as tighten pores.Try Phytomer Oligomarine Flawless Skin Tonic. Actually ideal for combination to oily skin types, this toner completes makeup removal and cleansing for really clear and clean skin. From the 1st application, the skin feels fresh, looks clear and is evenly toned. Day after day, excess oil dramatically reduces and pores are tightened. Oh, and your complexion will be more radiant too!Don’tUse heavy, oil-based moisturisers. While oily skin does still need moisturising just like any other skin type, rich moisturisers can clog pores and lead to breakouts.Do Moisturise your skin though! Simply use an oil-free lightweight moisturiser to keep your skin hydrated.Do Exfoliate regularly to remove dead skin cells and unclog pores which can help control oil production. Don’t Over-exfoliate! Once or twice weekly is sufficient. Over exfoliating skin can be detrimental and actually have some of the same signs as oily skin! From a shiny complexion to skin suddenly prone to breakouts. To find out whether your skin could be over-exfoliated click here.Don’t Use products with alcohol. Alcohol-based products can be very irritating and drying for oily skin. Your sebaceous glands will get the message that your skin is too dry and will work overtime to produce more sebum which equals even oilier skin!DoUse face masks that contain salicylic acid, beta-hydroxy acid, clays and ingredients with antibacterial properties. Our Pevonia Age Correction Micro-Pores Bio-Active Mask can be used once or twice a week as it pulls debris, blackheads and pore-cloggers from the skin. It's uniquely formulated to remove excess oil, control sebum production and help reveal an even-toned matte complexion.Don’tSkip sunscreen. ever. It’s important to protect your skin from the sun no matter what your skin type.DoUse oil-free or non comedogenic makeup to avoid clogging pores. Mineral makeup it best. Blemished skin? How to best conceal it

by Jo Boyden on Nov 10 2022
Whether you are dealing with all out acne, have a few blemishes that won’t budge or you’re prone to pesky pimples, you might be wondering what the best way is to conceal your imperfections. The thing is certain makeup products can exacerbate your already irritated skin, so you need to be careful how and what you put on your face. From the best skin preparation products to breathable foundations, below are our top tips for concealing skin woes.1. Prep your skinBefore applying any makeup, its essential skin is clean and well moisturised, even oily, acne prone skin needs sufficient moisture! Well-nourished skin will prevent makeup from looking cakey, as well as help skin to look less dull!Look for foaming and gel cleansers, and moisturisers specifically targeted to acne and blemished prone skin.2. Use a primerUsing a primer will not only create an even base for your makeup but it’s also an amazing must-have when it comes to prolonging the wear of your foundation, and let’s face it acne-prone skin tends to be on the oily side and the last thing you’ll want is for your foundation to slide right off your face by lunchtime! No sireee. What’s more primers also add a ‘blurring effect’ to your skin to give the illusion of a smoother complexion. And they create a barrier between your skin and your makeup preventing any further irritation too.Just be sure to look for primers that will hydrate, soothe or replenish your skin. Choosing a mattifying primer will also help to combat any excess oil and shine you might be experiencing, as well as reduce the appearance of pore size. Try ELES’s Pore Perfecting Face Primer. It’s a light-textured oil free face primer which combats shine, absorbs excess oil, reduces the appearance of large open pores, promotes antiseptic properties which is great for blemish and breakout prone skin, and it really does keep your foundation looking flawless all day long!3. Choose your makeup wiselyA concealer can offer a multitude of benefits while hiding a multitude of sins! But not every concealer can tackle every issue in one application. In general concealers are formulated to target something specific so it’s best to decipher what you want from your concealer and then select which is best for you.If it’s pimples you are trying to conceal, oil-free and non-comedogenic cover ups are best and many now have skin enhancing benefits to soothe inflammation too. Avoid mineral oil, lanolin and talc-based products which tend to block the pores and exacerbate acne. Instead opt for a mineral concealer like ELES Cosmetics Mineral Phototouch Concealer. Light-reflective minerals and line-filling micro-spheres camouflage flaws. Dark circles, blemishes and fine lines vanish! And when it comes to foundation, you’ll want it to allow your skin to breath freely to prevent blocked pores and irritated skin conditions so go for mineral. For redness, instead of using a concealer, opt for a colour corrector which will help visually correct redness and even out skin tone. Using one with UV protection will also help shield your sensitive skin from exposure that can aggravate rosacea. We are obsessed with the ELES CC Cream 20, a lightweight oil-free colour corrective cream with board spectrum protection and really does multi-task like no other!4. Be careful with how you apply your productAlways apply product with clean fingers (yes I know it sounds obvious!) or apply with a sponge, beauty blender or concealer/foundation brush to avoid contamination and ingredient breakdown. 5. Select the right shade for your skin toneMake sure that you purchase a shade that’s an exact match for your skin tone. This is very important because you want this area to appear even with the rest of your face.6. Always set your makeupA mineral powder is the best choice to set your makeup as its ingredients are usually non-irritating. Apply with a brush rather than a sponge which can harbour bacteria. We couldn’t recommend the ELES Mineral Powder Foundation more! Highly compatible with common skin sensitivities, the lightweight powder easily adjusts from sheer to richer, more opaque coverage while effectively camouflaging imperfections.Finish with a spritz of facial mist like Pevonia’s Hyaluronic Acid HydraMist. This outstanding multi-tasker not only rejuvenates skin with a burst of hydration, plumping fine lines and wrinkles, but it also relieves dry, flaky, itchy and sensitive prone skin while keeping makeup set in place all day long! Genius.

Want clear skin? 13 beauty tips you need to know

by Jo Boyden on Jun 30 2022
Whether you are currently dealing with adult acne, are prone to the occasional breakout, or get hormonal pimples when it’s ‘that time of month’, it is possible to get clear skin and maintain it, you just need to know how! From blemish busting products to best practices, we asked the BC pros how to get clear skin fast! Here’s their top 13 beauty tips…. Make sure you use skincare rich in blemish-fighting ingredients Just as you’d search for products rich in Hyaluronic Acid if we have dry or dehydrated skin, or collagen if you’re concerned about ageing, if you want to target any blemishes you may already have and urgently eliminate you need to make sure your skincare is formulated with a few key ingredients! These include;Salicylic AcidWhen it comes to breakouts, salicylic acid should always be your trusty go-to. This is because it’s calming, decongesting and antibacterial, as well as a proven superstar in reducing and preventing further pore clogging! Salicylic Acid is a BHA (beta-hydroxy acid) that penetrates deep into the skin to exfoliate sebum-filled pores, as well as dissolve oil build-up and dead cells from the skin’s surface!Benzoyl PeroxideBenzoyl Peroxide is the most effective ingredient for actually treating spots as opposed to preventing them. This is because it actually kills bacteria! It can however be a little drying and irritating which is why it’s best used in specific targeted spot treatments.AHA’s (Glycolic and Lactic Acids)These two alpha-hydroxy acids slough away the dead skin cells that cause pimple-producing clogged pores. The result? Smoother, softer skin.Vitamin COfficially known as ascorbic acid, Vitamin C is an antioxidant and has anti-inflammatory properties. It can help decrease redness and swelling in blemish-prone skin. Firstly though, when it comes to blemishes the first port of call is to understand what exactly you are dealing with, whether it be hormonal pimples around your chin to one big bulbus bump on your forehead to all out acne, blemishes come in all different shapes and sizes and the products you use can differ too! To find out more about the different types of blemishes and the best product for you click here. Use a facial cleansing brush daily The secret to getting clearer skin is not just in the formulas we use but the practices we establish too! Used in unison with your cleanser, a cleansing brush will provide skin with deeper cleaning, removing any remnants of dirt, bacteria and makeup from your skin you’re your cleanser alone may not have.A good facial cleansing brush will also exfoliate the skin’s surface, leaving it looking and feeling so much smoother. Just be sure that it is made with gentle silicon as some cleansing devices can be to harsh for blemish prone and reactive skin, causing any redness and sensitivity to be exacerbated. The best facial cleansing brush as recommended by the BC pros is the Sonic Facial Cleansing Brush. We all know about the importance of cleansing, but with this little genius gadget you can get your deepest clean yet as gentle but powerful sonic massage works with ultra-hygienic silicone touchpoints and your chosen cleanser to thoroughly remove any build-up of dead skin cells, dirt, oil and sweat, preventing skin problems and resulting in clean & radiant skin, But that’s not all! It preps your skin perfectly for the absorption of your favourite skincare products for maximum effect and results, the tiny pulses help awaken the skin by stimulating the circulation of blood in the skin’s layers (when the blood is stimulated more oxygen is produced in the blood and this feeds the skin cells) and the cleansing brush will aid in keeping your pores clear from debris banishing those breakouts! All it takes is 2 minutes per day! Watch what you eat Sadly, certain foods can exacerbate blemishes and cause full on acne breakouts eek! While other foods can actually help fight them! To pave the way to clear skin you want to follow an anti-acne diet stat. This is a diet rich in the following goodness; Fatty fish such as salmon and tuna Yellow and orange fruits and vegetables such as carrots, apricots, and sweet potatoes Spinach, kale and other dark green and leafy vegetables Tomatoes Blueberries Avocados whole-wheat bread brown rice quinoa Soybeans Foods to avoid include; Refined grains and sugars Dairy products Fast food Chocolate Whey protein powder Stay hydrated Staying hydrated is imperative when it comes to maintaining clear skin. It’s important to consume your 8 glasses of water a day, as well as religiously moisturising your skin both morning and night to keep it supple, soft, well-nourished and blemish free! Never skip on your sunscreen Sun, heat and humidity can cause oil glands to become overactive, which in turn can lead to acne breakouts! To prevent these breakouts choose and oil-free, non-comedogenic sunscreen and apply it liberally daily! Keep your phone clean and try not to touch your face! We are all guilty of spending many an hour stuck to our phones but did you know the bacteria on your phone can lead to breakouts! It’s best to use earbuds instead of pressing the phone against your face or simply use an anti-bacterial wipe to clean your phone daily! It’s also important to be mindful of how often you touch your face with your hands (eek guilty as charged!) like your phone your hands pick up dirt and bacteria and transfer this onto your skin when you rub your face can lead to further blemishes! Exercise every day, even if it’s only a little Exercise is imperative for optimum skin health, by exercising we increase blood flow, by increasing blood flow we help nourish skin cells and keep them vital. Exercise has also been accountable for reducing stress-related acne. Take time out to relax In a fast-paced world where many of us barely stop it’s easy to fall victim to stress! The thing is stress can, unfortunately, trigger breakouts and if you already suffer from acne, stress will only make it worse! So it’s important to try and take time out of our busy schedule for some relaxation. Anything from practicing breathing techniques, reading a good book, taking a bubble bath, meditating, listening to music, or practicing yoga can and will help! Wear mineral makeup as opposed to traditional formulations If you want clear skin and you’re not willing to let makeup go, choose mineral makeup products. They don’t contain any chemical nasties or pore clogging ingredients like some traditional formulations and will allow skin to breath freely all day long. Here at BC from the staff to the experts we all love ELES Cosmetics Liquid Powder Mineral Foundation. And for more translucent coverage the ELES Mineral Foundation Powder. Both products are perfect for those with skin sensitives, are free of any chemical nasties, provide effortless and natural coverage and most importantly will allow your skin to brief freely (so no pore clogging in sight) and feel like you aren’t wearing makeup at all! What more could you ask for? Clean your makeup tools! I’m sure many of us are guilty of putting this off but regularly cleaning our makeup brushes and sponges can make a huge difference to our skin! Yes, that’s right! Your makeup tools are meant to be washed! Besides bacteria, both brushes and sponges also accumulate dead skin cells and oil which can clog your pores leading to skin irritation and pesky pimples! Also, if you apply your makeup with a dirty bush the end result can be a streaky and patchy complexion! Clean brushes definitely make for a smoother makeup application! So get to cleaning them stat! Change your pillowcase frequently! While no one loves to do lots of laundry, switching up your pillowcase every few days will help on the quest for clear skin! Unfortunately like with our hands, makeup brushes and our phones, our pillowcases can harbour any excess oil, dirt and bacteria too (urgh) and in turn, become a breeding ground for acne. So, make sure you change that pillowcase to reduce the risk of breakouts! Better still, if you’re prone to blemishes opt for a silk pillowcase! Silk pillowcases absorb less moisture and dirt, therefore, making them the better choice. Always remove makeup before you go to sleep! It doesn’t matter how tired you are, removing your makeup every night is paramount! While you are asleep at night, your skin isn’t! It’s actually the time your skin recharge, repair, recuperate and renew itself! When you leave makeup on, you are preventing that from happening. The skin ceases to breathe properly, pores get clogged and blemishes start to appear! Get some quality sleep! We don’t call it ‘beauty sleep’ for nothing! When we sleep our skin repairs itself, producing collagen and the more collagen produced means skin is plumper and less likely to wrinkle! If we’re sleep-deprived, not only will we wake with dark under-eye circles and bags, but we are also more likely to experience skin irritation, dehydration, fine lines, and dare I say blemishes! Us adults need a minimum of 7 hours of restful slumber a night, 8 preferred! Just be sure you switch off any electronics an hour or so before a practice some relaxation techniques!
combination skin

5 signs you have combination skin and how to manage it

by Jo Boyden on Jun 24 2022
While many of us tend to self-diagnose our skin with one specific condition, be it dry, oily, sensitive, ageing, the list goes on, it might actually surprise you that the most common skin type is actually combination skin - a mix of both oily and dry!So, if you’ve noticed that you have dry areas on your face but experience excess oil at the same time, you could well be one of the millions, billions even, with combination skin. The problem is it can be tricky to figure out how to care for your skin properly considering that different parts of your face have different needs! The good news is however that you can indeed perfectly balance your combination skin by following a few tips and tricks!Read on a we explain the tell-tale signs of combination skin, what exactly causes it and how best to care for it. Your t-zone is oily, while your cheeks are dry Combination skin tends to display certain characteristics – excess oil, large pores, shine, and blackheads on the forehead, nose and chin (otherwise known as the T’zone) this is due to over-active oil glands in these areas, and then dryness, dullness, fine line and wrinkles elsewhere (predominantly on your cheeks). As a result, it’s very important for those of us with combination skin to regulate sebum and oil production along the T-zone so be sure to steer clear of greasy, creamy products as they will be too rich for your skin and may lead to clogged pores, at the same time though you don’t want to use products that can dry out your skin in turn activating even more oil production! The goal is to treat both oily and dry areas at the same time for a clear, balanced complexion!Solution:Multi-mask your skin once a week! Apply a moisturising mask to your dry areas and an oil-absorbing charcoal or clay mask to your oily T-zone. It’ll do wonders for combination skin. It’s tricky to soak up excess oil without over-drying the skin but products containing charcoal and clay do just that! They work by attracting and absorbing dirt and oil. As a lightweight natural ash residue hydrocarbon, charcoal easily pulls toxins out of the skin for a clean, purified, and healthy complexion as it restores a normalized cellular function. Try Pevonia’s Pure Skin Charcoal Mask. Apply once a week to oily areas of your skin and watch it work its magic. You get breakouts in the oily area of your face Thanks to excess oil production in the t-zone, combination skin can often lead to breakouts when the pores get clogged.Solution: To fight these breakouts, we suggest using a salicylic acid-based cleanser like Medicalia Clarifying Cleanser which provides pore-clearing benefits in a super gentle lather that won’t dry out the skin, stripping it of moisture. We also love Phytomer’s’ Oligopur Blemish Target Gel, it’s a phenomenal spot treatment which targets blemishes with precision, rapidly improving the skin’s appearance and eliminating spots almost overnight! Your oily-to-dry skin ratio tends to change dependant on the season With combination skin, your oily-to-dry ratio tends to vary with a change in seasons. During summer the heat and humidity cause oil production to increase, causing your T-zone to feel extra oily while your dry areas are actually quite “normal”. During winter, the opposite happens this is because environmental exposure sucks moisture from your skin which means your T-zone will appear “normal” while your dry areas will look really dry.Solution:Use Pevonia Balancing Combination Skin Cream, it’ll keep your skin perfectly balanced all year round no matter what the weather. With a subtle lemongrass scent to die for and a soothing, silky texture which perfectly dissolves into skin on application, this moisturiser is a BC best-seller for very good reason! Perfect for those with combination skin, prone to oily t-zones, it effectively refines pores and controls oil and shine with skin nourishing ingredients including vitamin e, arnica and aloe. Get ready for smooth, soft and supple skin minus the excessive oil and congestion that it brings! Yes! You have enlarged pores on your nose, chin and forehead Unfortunately the more oily your skin (thank you overactive oil glands in our forehead, nose and chin area!) the more prone this area is to clogged pores. When sebum builds inside pores, they expand giving them an enlarged appearance!Solution: You can reduce the appearance of these pores by following a number of tips. Your makeup always looks patchy! That’s right, your makeup looked flawless when you left the house but come midday it’s slid straight off your t-zone and clung to those cheese of yours looking like a patchwork piece!Solution: Apply a hydrating and mattifying makeup primer before your foundation.A good skin primer will become your lifeline. Not only will it stop your foundation from sliding off your face quite literally, it’ll keep your base smooth while reducing the appearance of pores (and fine lines!) too!Our go-to is the ELES Pore Perfecting Face Primer. It’s oil-free, perfectly lightweight and seems to combat shiny areas on your skin almost instantly! This is because it contains a natural dermat complex which enables it to absorb oil and effectively reduce pores size in one hit! Outstanding for those of us with oily T-Zones!The good news is it’s also formulated with nourishing ingredients to keep the dryer parts of your skin happy too! So now you know you definitely have combination skin, what exactly causes it you might wonder…Like with all skin types, genetics play a major role so you can thank your parents for the skin you’ve landed! It’s not all their fault though! Environmental factors as well as your lifestyle choices play a large part too. For instance, prolonged humid conditions in the summer months cause sweat glands to produce more sweat leaving the skin moist and shiny, whereas prolonged heat causes skin to dehydrate resulting in dryness! And then let’s not forget those darn hormones of ours that can play havoc on our skin during certain times of the month! Skin issues can be exacerbated by our hormones. Your sebaceous glands (sebum) have receptors on them which respond to our hormones. The more testosterone produced, the more oil is produced in the skin!

5 acne treatments and tips the experts swear by

by Jo Boyden on May 12 2022
If you’ve been suffering from pimples or all out acne for some years now, or have recently noticed a sudden change in your once clear, smooth skin, you are not alone. Acne is one of the most common skin conditions, even in adults, and is unfortunately triggered by a number of factors, from hormones to stress, excess oil production, bacteria, blocked pores and more! While acne can range in severity, we’re talking anything from whiteheads to large cysts, there are several steps you can take to try to reduce, or in some cases eliminate the condition all together - from specialised skincare to calm inflammation, eradicate impurities, remove toxins and alleviate symptoms, to something as simple as making a few lifestyle changes! Read on as we reveal the best tips and beauty products to help combat acne, as recommended by the experts. Use skincare specifically designed to target acne If you’ve been searching for a science-backed acne treatment that both targets and treats blemishes, look no further, you’ll find all you need in BC’s high-end acne products. From cleansers to moisturisers, spot creams to facial masks, each of the products are formulated with skin loving ingredients that’ll specially target blemishes of all kinds. And if you ask any skincare expert, when it comes to acne, they swear by a couple of skin-saving ingredients - salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide.Powerhouse salicylic acid dissolves the bonds that hold dull, dead skin cells on the surface of the skin so the skin will gently shed, revealing smoother, brighter skin underneath, while super ingredient Benzoyl peroxide is helpful for treating acne not only because it kills bacteria that contribute to acne, but because it helps prevent and clear out clogged pores too! The best Cleanser – Medicalia Clarifying CleanserThe key to fighting persistent breakouts is to find a high-impact cleansing product that will help to clear up your skin while thoroughly cleaning it.Formulated with both lactic and salicylic acids to deeply penetrate pores, remove dead skin cells, and eliminate toxins, surface bacteria, and makeup, Medicalia’s Clarifying Cleanser is a must! It provides skin with a super gentle lather that won’t dry out the skin like some acne treatments do! The best Exfoliator – Phytomer Vegetal Exfoliant with Natural EnzymesWhether your acne is mild or more severe, regular exfoliation will smooth and soften the skin and brighten your complexion. It also helps reduce breakouts by keeping the pores from becoming clogged with the pus of dead cells and sebum (skin oil).We are talking gentle exfoliation though! People often think daily “scrubbing” will prevent blackheads, but it can actually increase the shedding of skin cells therefore causing further clogging on the pores! Make sure you use exfoliators that don’t require physical scrubbing. The BC experts highly recommend Phytomer Vegetal Exfoliant with Natural Enzymes. The best Moisturiser – Pevonia Problematic Skincare Cream We get it. Isn’t applying a moisturiser counterintuitive if you have acne prone skin? After all you’d do everything in your power to keep oiliness away right? The thing is not all acne-prone skin is oily, in fact, dry skin, normal skin, sensitive skin, basically any skin can be prone to breakouts as well! Whatever your skin, moisturising is an essential step in every skincare routine, after all they protect the skin’s barrier function and can even help soothe and prevent acne if done correctly. The experts at BC can’t get enough of Pevonia’s Problematic Skincare Cream rich in Glycolic Acid. It works amazingly on problematic skin reducing overall breakouts while leaving your complexion soft, supple and pores clog-free! The best Serum – Pevonia Soothing Propolis ConcentrateIf you’re a sufferer of reactive, sensitive or acne prone skin a soothing serum could be your new go-to if it’s not already! Pevonia’s Soothing Propolis Concentrate is a beautiful rich gel-like serum with anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and antioxidant properties! It combines calming lavender, vetiver oil and a high concentration of healing propolis from the Jura Mountains of France to desensitize, decongest, heal, strengthen, and really enrich skin! Outstanding stuff! The best Spot treatment – Phytomer Oligopur Blemish Target GelWhen a pimple rears its head, a potent spot correction treatment will encourage rapid healing by controlling bacteria, reducing inflammation and diminishing the follicular accumulation of keratin. Try Phytomer’s’ Oligopur Blemish Target Gel, it’s a phenomenal spot treatment which targets blemishes with precision, rapidly improving the skin’s appearance and eliminating spots almost overnight! Simply apply a small amount of product to your pimple and let the powerful ingredients keep your skin follicles clean to achieve an even and bright complexion. If you need to conceal your skin, opt for mineral makeup We get it, your natural inclination is to conceal your blemishes, the thing is makeup can exacerbate an already highly irritated complexion, so instead of slathering on your foundation, opt for a breathable base instead. Mineral makeup is the answer as it doesn’t contain any chemical nasties or additional oils, nor will it aggravate skin or clog pores. Genius! Review your daily diet A poor diet and an imbalanced gut can contribute to acne breakouts. To keep your skin clear and pimple-free, prevent breakouts by attempting to avoid the following foods; Refined grains and sugars Dairy products Fast food Chocolate Whey protein powder Instead indulge in foods such as almonds, blueberries, avocados and kidney beans as they are among a range of foods which may help to reduce and prevent inflammation. Keep up the exercise Its easy to think you should forgo exercise if you are an acne sufferer in fear that sweating will only make your condition oh so much worse. The thing is sweating can actually help dislodge blocked pores! You just need to make sure you cleanse your skin straight after exercising and before the sweat has had time to dry! Exercise is also imperative for optimum skin health, by exercising we increase blood flow, by increasing blood flow we help nourish skin cells and keep them vital. Exercise has also been accountable for reducing stress-related acne. Always remove your makeup before bed It doesn’t matter how tired you are, removing your makeup is paramount! While you are asleep at night, your skin isn’t! It’s actually the time your skin recharges, repairs and recuperates! Removing your makeup and other dirt and grime before bed unblocks those clogged pores meaning skin can breathe once again, this in turn reduces the likelihood of further skin inflammation and acne eruptions. Beauty Collective - reduce Pimple overnight

10 steps to radically reduce pimples overnight

by Jo Boyden on Oct 06 2021
Dealing with spots can be frustrating. Just as you think you’ve beaten those blemishes, along pops up more! Well, it is possible to radically reduce their appearance overnight, you just need to follow these 10 simple steps, according to the experts at BC. Use a warm compress then pop ice on your pimpleApply a warm compress to the problem area or steam your face to bring your blemish to the surface. Then use a cold compress or ice, as this will help to decrease inflammation, reducing redness, size and visibility of the spot. Don’t pick that pimpleAs tempting as it can be, and I’m sure we’ve all been there, you should never, ever pick at your pimple as this will only do damage to your skin. Why? Because it can spread the area of bacteria, creating more blemishes and trauma to your skin, which in turn leads to inflammation, infection, and potentially even scarring. Picking your pimple can also result in it taking much longer than usual for it to disappear, rather than overnight like you are wanting!Watch what you eatSadly, there are particular foods that can exacerbate blemishes so if you want your spots to do one, make sure you eliminate them from your diet! Avoid cow’s milk and whey protein as they can be known to aggravate acne and try to stick to a low sugar diet as yes sadly that chocolate bar or delicious cupcake can be a cause of a sudden breakout.Make sure your skincare features the following blemish fighting ingredientsWhile there are 3 key ingredients to look out for when searching for that overnight miracle product; Benzoyl peroxide to kill acne-causing bacteria. Salicylic acid to help exfoliate and unclog pores Retinol to help boost cell turnover, prompting cells to shed and preventing them from clogging. If you are prone to blemishes and you want to keep them under control, you really need to be armed with skincare featuring 6 key ingredients: Salicylic Acid, Glycolic Acid, Benzoyl Peroxide, Retinol, Charcoal/Clay and Hyaluronic Acid. For more information on the benefits and effects of these ingredients and the best products to use click here. And use a good spot treatment for those pop-up pimples! While there is no way to get rid of a pimple in 5 minutes you can see huge improvements in a matter of hours by immediately treating it with a topical spot treatment rich in Salicylic Acid. Salicylic acid is very potent when it comes to getting rid of blemishes. By applying this spot attacking ingredient directly to the problem area, immediately removes excess oil and dead skin cells from the surface of the skin, meaning it effectively unclogs pores while simultaneously reducing any infection, swelling and redness. The team at BC can’t recommend the following skin saviours enough. Medicalia spot treatment This potent professional-grade targeted treatment diminishes follicular build-up, controls bacteria, and reduces inflammation with noticeable improvement in skin healing. It infuses skin with high performing ingredients including; Salicylic Acid, Glycolic Acid Mucor Meihei, Phytic Acid, and Sea Whip to effectively control, combat, and clear blemishes and acne lesions. What’s more it effectively decreases the risk of scarring and prevents post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. “This product is fantastic - have used this on random spots which appear and they always go away after using this product for a couple of days in a row. Highly recommended!” Natasha M Phytomer Oligopur Blemish Target GelThis blemish treatment gel dries and corrects, targeting blemishes with precision. It rapidly improves the skin's appearance, significantly reducing spots overnight. “This is an amazing blemish gel! I'm 37 and still get a few monthly breakouts. The Phytomer Blemish Gel works almost overnight, or over the course of the day as you can apply it over make up without worrying that it will show or mess up your foundation or powder. It doesn't dry you out and absorbs quickly.” Leanne Pevonia SpaTeen Blemish-B-GoneCombining both organic Benzoyl Peroxide with organic Salicylic Acid, this spot treatment radically heals blemishes while counteracting bacteria, as well as preventing future breakouts. Phew.“This is the BEST spot treatment that I have ever tried. I use it once at night and once in the morning. It totally took care of my breakouts. I can carry it in my bag with no problems, and it is easy to use. I’m hooked!” Ella W Tie your hair backKeep your hair off your face as the natural oil from your hair can touch your face and worsen the pimple. Make sure you remove your makeup at the end of the day!Whether you’re prone to the odd spot or suffer from all out acne, you’ll soon see that sleeping with a face full of makeup can result in a bigger breakout of blemishes. Eek! Makeup, unfortunately, clogs pores, and when your pores are blocked, your skin can’t breathe, and therefore it can’t regenerate. The oil in your pores builds-up and transform itself into spots. Fact. So make sure you always remove your makeup before bed with a good makeup remover! We love Vie Collection’s Micellar Water. It literally purifies, conditions and cleanses your complexion in one easy step thoroughly removing makeup from your lips, eyes and face. “All makeup removal products I have purchased, has always broke me out. So this is just what I was looking for. This product does leave your facial area's feeling well hydrated, nourished, and well cleansed” SophiaFor more information on sleeping in makeup and what it really does to our skin, click here. And do use a blemish busting cleanser before bedDon't ignore the power of a good cleanser formulated with some of the 6 key ingredients. Using your cleanser religiously will not only treat the pimples you do have, but prevent future emergencies. We highly recommend thoroughly cleansing your skin with one of these blemish busting cleansers, before zapping that zit with your spot treatment. Pevonia Clarigel Exfoliating CleanserExfoliating cleansers are perfect for blemish prone skin, as they help reduce breakouts by removing excess dead skin cells and unclogging pores. Pevonia’s Clarigel Exfoliating Cleanser combines Salicylic Acid and Citric Acid with Jojoba, Soapwort, Triclosan and Grapefruit Oil, to gently exfoliate skin’s surface as well as deeply penetrate the pores, decreasing microbe growth and calming inflammation. “I bought this product after being “prescribed” it by my beauty therapist for my mild adult acne. Firstly, the scent is light and non-intrusive, which is a huge plus. I also like that it contains both manual (small grains) chemical (citric acid) exfoliating properties. It helps to make my skin feel clean, smooth and prepared for moisturising. After a week or so I noticed a HUGE improvement in my breakouts.” Leah Medicalia Clarifying CleanserIn general, foaming cleansers are also great for oily and acne-prone skin, specifically because of their pore penetrating capabilities. If you want to get rid of blemishes or excess oil/sebum fast, you need a cleanser that can go deep in your pores and get rid of the debris without too much effort. We LOVE Medicalia’s Clarifying Cleanser. Specifically created for those with breakout prone and sensitive/oily skin, it’s formulated with both Salicylic and Lactic acids (so we know that’s a good thing!) Its potent foaming suds work very quickly to eliminate surface bacteria, toxins, impurities and makeup while combatting inflammation too! “I have used this cleanser for over 15 years now and it is just awesome! I used to suffer from acne and this cleanser helped no end and without drying my skin out!” Bec Change your pillowcaseI know we all change our pillowcases but do we do it frequently enough? Keeping your pillowcase clean and we are talking about changing it every 3-4 days, is a top beauty secret! This is because they have a build-up of oils, dirt, and sweat from daily use (yuck) which means they can harbor bacteria and in turn become a breeding ground for blemishes, as well as exacerbating them! Go to bed in a relaxed state and get your 8-9 hours of beauty sleep!I’ve said this many a time and for good reason. Stress and lack of sleep induce the hormone cortisol, which triggers our skin to produce more sebum or oil. This increase of oil can then clog pores and in turn not only exacerbate the blemish you are wanting gone by morning but can also lead to even more breakouts. And yes, we know what we are saying isn’t as simple as it sounds, especially when many of us are dealing with work, kids, home-schooling, and lockdown, but from personal experience, I do highly recommend having a relaxing mineral bath before bed. Little instantly reduces stress quite like it. I LOVE Phytomer’s Oligomer Well Being Sensation Essential Minerals Relaxing Bath. It’s a lightly foaming, ultra-relaxing fragranced bath enriched with Oligomer – a partially sodium reduced seawater concentrate that contains all of the remineralizing properties of seawater – to strengthen and restore the skin while releasing all pent-up tension in the body. Amazing stuff right? Then either meditating for a few minutes, I love the Calm app, OR playing soothing sounds. This can have a profound effect on your mental state, significantly reducing stress and leading to blissful slumber.
Beauty Collective - skincare for clear blemish free skin

6 ingredients you need in your skincare for clear, blemish-free skin

by Jo Boyden on Oct 01 2021
If you are prone to breakouts and tired of battling them, you may want to consider switching up your skincare routine and introduce products that incorporate these 6 blemish-fighting ingredients into your everyday life. Salicylic AcidWhen it comes to breakouts, salicylic acid should always be your trusty go-to. The most potent ingredient when it comes to battling blemishes and every dermatologist’s go-to, Salicylic is a superstar purifying BHA (Beta Hydroxy Acid) that’s calming, decongesting and antibacterial. Don’t let the word ‘acid’ put you off though, as even those with sensitive skin can tolerate it. It works by penetrating deep into the skin to exfoliate clogged pores, as well as dissolve oil build-up and dead cells from the skin’s surface! To fight pimples, we suggest using a salicylic acid-based cleanser like Medicalia Clarifying Cleanser which provides pore-clearing benefits in a super gentle lather that won’t dry out the skin, stripping it of moisture. We also love Phytomer’s’ Oligopur Blemish Target Gel, it’s a phenomenal spot treatment which targets blemishes with precision, rapidly improving the skin’s appearance and eliminating spots almost overnight! “This is an amazing blemish gel! I'm 37 and still get a few monthly breakouts. The Phytomer Blemish Gel works almost overnight, or over the course of the day as you can apply it over make up without worrying that it will show or mess up your foundation or powder. It doesn't dry you out and absorbs quickly.” Leanne Glycolic AcidA natural exfoliant derived from sugar cane, this glow-giving hero ingredient seems to do it all! Not only is it very effective at exfoliating skin and treating/preventing acne (thanks to its ability to penetrate deep within the skin), it also has the power to reduce fine lines, fade dark spots, increase skin thickness, and even out skin tone and texture! It’s therefore no surprise that you’ll find it in many a product! So, if your skin is looking dull, devitalised and it feels like you are forever battling blemishes, we highly recommend Pevonia’s Problematic Skincare Cream rich in Glycolic Acid. It works amazingly on problematic skin reducing overall breakouts while leaving your complexion soft, supple and pores clog-free! “It works great on my problematic skin reducing overall breakouts. Leaves my skin soft and does not clog my pores.” Tara Benzoyl PeroxideAnother truly effective ingredient for actually treating spots as opposed to preventing them. This is because it actually kills bacteria! It can however be a little drying and irritating which is why it’s best used in specific targeted spot treatments. Pevonia’s SpaTeen Blemish B-Gone combines both organic Benzoyl Peroxide with organic Salicylic Acid to counteract bacteria and well as preventing future breakouts. “This is the BEST spot treatment that I have ever tried. I use it once at night and once in the morning. It totally took care of my breakouts. I can carry it in my bag with no problems, and it is easy to use. I'm hooked!” Ella W Charcoal and clayIt’s tricky to soak up excess oil without over-drying the skin but products containing charcoal and clay do just that! Apply once a week to oily and blemish prone skin and watch it work its magic. “I love this mask so much. It feels creamy to apply and then slightly dry’s to touch. It is my new favourite mask, drawing out impurities and clearing any outbreaks.” Lorraine RetinolThe master magician, retinol is the superstar of all ingredients thanks to its multitude of benefits including its ability to increase cell turnover, instructing damaged cells to produce healthier cells faster! As a result, pores are less likely to become blocked so blemishes unlikely to form! We are loving Pevonia’s Micro Retinol Serum. “I ran out of a previous retinol product and gradually my skin started to look awful, dull and dehydrated. I love the Pevonia Power Rich repair moisturizer, so I thought I would try this as well. Literally could see and feel the difference overnight!” Winner! LeahTo find out more about retinol and the right products for you click here. Hyaluronic AcidProbably the most famous skincare ingredient of them all, and renowned as every beauty expert’s ‘must-have’, hyaluronic acid has the ability to instantly deliver supple, dewy skin. It binds moisture to skin cells to keep skin smooth, firm, plump, and undeniably radiant and thanks to its sponge-like effect, every molecule can hold 1,000 times its weight in water so when topically applied it’s like a burst of intense hydration to the skin yet will not clog pores, making it the perfect hydrator for blemish prone skin. Even though when you are suffering from oily blemish prone skin you think applying moisturiser is the last thing you need, it’s actually one of the most important aspects of lessening pesky pimples and all out acne alike! Making sure the epidermis, your skin’s top layer, is hydrated is paramount for your skin’s health. Hyaluronic acid is also different from normal hydrators because it acts like a water magnet and maintains skin’s oil and water balance. We are hands down in awe of Pevonia’s Hyaluronic Acid Hydra Serum, featuring one of the highest concentrations of hyaluronic acid on the skincare market. “I have just started using this serum and the results are already noticeable. My skin is so much more youthful! Smoother, plumper and visibly radiant! I couldn’t recommend more highly!!” Mary C For more information on which type of blemishes you suffer from and how to best treat them click here as well as the best makeup tips for blemish/acne prone skin.

Makeup tips for acne prone skin

by Jo Boyden on Sep 24 2021
Has your skin been feeling the effects of the last however many weeks thanks to the likes of lockdown, home-schooling and working from home!? Or are you simply prone to pesky pimples and adult acne?Whatever your situation we are here to tell you that when armed with the right makeup products and tips on how to best apply, you can effectively conceal those blemishes and feel confident in your skin! Simply read on as we reveal the top 7 makeup tips for acne prone skin according to the pros at BC. Use a primerFirst things first, before you can start to conceal your blemish prone skin you need to prep your face with a primer. A primer is an amazing must-have when it comes to prolonging the wear of your foundation, and let’s face it acne-prone skin tends to be on the oily side and the last thing you’ll want is for your foundation to slide right off your face by lunchtime! No sireee. Primers also add a ‘blurring effect’ to your skin to give the illusion of a smoother complexion. Phew!Just be sure to look for primers that will hydrate, soothe or replenish your skin and if your complexion tends to be oily as well as acne prone, be sure to pick a mattifying primer as it’ll help to combat the excess oil and shine and reduce the appearance of pore size. Try ELES’s Pore Perfecting Face Primer. It’s a light-textured oil free face primer which combats shine, absorbs excess oil, reduces the appearance of large open pores, promotes antiseptic properties which is great for blemish and breakout prone skin, and it really does keep your foundation looking flawless all day long! This is a great primer – I've been using it for a few years now. It helps keep my foundation looking amazing all day. It's mattifying but won't dry your skin. Sia PapageorgiouDo not cake on your makeup! Remember less is more so keep makeup simpleWearing multiple products from concealer to foundation to blush to illuminator can cause over stimulation so it’s best to keep things simple! Use a skin-friendly breathable foundation and opt for a concealer with some yellow tones to help colour correct any redness.Be sure to always use your foundation first, then apply concealer to affected areas only. This will ensure a smoother even base and a more natural finish but be sure to keep every layer light though – the secret to successful makeup for blemish prone skin! Less product to block the skin causing heat!Mineral makeup will be your best friend, and I know we are biased, but ELES Cosmetics is simply the best and the reviews speak volumes! Choose your foundation wiselySlathering thick foundation all over your face to hide pesky pimples and blemishes can be tempting we know, but it will only end up drawing attention to the bumps on your face as well as exacerbating your condition, so you need to choose your foundation wisely! You really need to navigate the ingredients in a foundation plus it’s best to steer clear of oil-based makeup, as excess oil production is a key cause of blemishes so oil-free formulas will be your best friend! Also avoid skin irritants like alcohol and fragrance which can be found in many a foundation. We recommend opting for a mineral formula every time. These contain no chemical nasties and will allow your skin to breathe freely. Try best-selling ELES Liquid Powder Mineral Foundation. “I love love love this product. It has a velvety feel as it glides on your skin and finishes with a plumping matte finish. It always covers my blemishes and gives great coverage without over doing it. Would not use any other foundation!!” Kassey Newell If your acne seems particularly sensitive to makeup, you might want to consider swapping out your love of liquid formulas for powder. Powder will control oil and help your makeup last longer. Just be sure you choose the right sort of powder though as cakey makeup will just highlight your blemishes even more. Foundations with nylon and kaolin give skin a blurred, airbrushed effect. Try ELES Mineral Powder Foundation. “I’m a bit of a powder lover when it comes to foundations as I find liquid formulations a little too much. I have however become more sceptical as I get older as a few power compacts I have tried have enhanced my fine lines. However not this one! It’s amazing! The coverage is just perfect! It looks so natural, in fact like I’m not wearing foundation at all, yet it completely hides my imperfections. I’m in my late 40’s but would recommend this product to anyone, any age whether you are simply looking for a translucent powder, a foundation to conceal your blemishes, or a wonderful base for ageing skin. It has become my daily go-to!” Melissa B Protect your skin with natural SPFWe all know wearing sun protection is a daily necessity, but we understand that if you suffer from blemishes the last thing you feel like doing is smothering your skin in oily sunscreen! Cue mineral makeup rich in zinc oxide! Zinc oxide, which is an anti-inflammatory was once used to treat acne and when mixed with other subtle ingredients, can give you everything from sun protection to coverage. Mineral-based makeup with zinc alone or combined with titanium dioxide provides a good, balanced UV protection and ‘natural’ coverage for those who have acne.ELES Cosmetics range of foundations have an SPF of 15 and above and feel like you aren’t wearing sunscreen at all! Genius. Use the right makeup toolsThe way you apply your makeup is almost as important as the products you use. We’ve all heard it before, touch your face with your hands and you’ll likely cause a breakout so it comes as no surprise that you might well have heard that it’s best not to use your fingers to apply your makeup since even the oil and bacteria on your fingers can irritate skin, also hand heat can add more warmth to an already warm, aggravated complexion. Instead, use a damp Beautyblender. It is the least irritating way to apply your product and honestly provides the most effective results! Not only is the sponge strangely soothing on your skin, but it also provides a more natural-looking coverage. Makeup brushes are another option but just beware that the brush bristles can irritate your sensitive skin, therefore opt for brush bristles made from taklon, a “green” and allergy free synthetic fibre. Its smooth synthetic fibres do not absorb or trap pigment making it easy to keep clean! And make sure you wash those tools! It’s easy to forget about our washing our brushes and makeup sponges but by keeping them clean you’ll ensure you won’t be using grubby, bacteria-filled tools all the time! Eek. Besides bacteria, both makeup brushes and sponges also accumulate dead skin cells and oil which can clog your pores leading to further skin irritation and pesky pimples! Also if you apply your makeup with a dirty bush the end result can be a streaky and patchy complexion! Clean brushes definitely make for a smoother makeup application and healthier skin! Always remove makeup before bedSleeping with a face full of makeup can and will result in skin irritability and breakouts. Makeup not only traps dead skin cells it also blocks our pores and when pores are blocked the skin can’t breathe and therefore regenerate so make sure you commit to removing every inch of makeup before hitting the hay. Disguise redness fast

Disguise redness fast – tips and tricks from the BC experts

by Jo Boyden on Sep 08 2021
Whether you suffer from rosacea, are prone to acne, or you are simply just over having a flushed face, you’ll be happy to know that it is possible to cover up nearly any skin imperfection with specific makeup. While adopting a tailored skincare routine is the best way to treat facial redness long-term, the right makeup will conceal your flaws fast, you just need to know what products to use and how to use them! Many of us, when we think of concealing flaws, we think foundation, and the thicker the more likely to hide those imperfections right? But what we don’t often consider is that slathering on foundation can and will only exacerbate certain skin conditions. The less you apply to your skin the less likely it will react! So before making your makeup choices you’ll need to understand what type of facial redness you actually suffer from first, then by following these daily tips from the experts at BC, your redness will be corrected and concealed and your confidence boosted in minutes too! Identify your skin condition Red, flushed and irritated skin can be attributed to a number of factors ranging from heat, alcohol, exercise or embarrassment to underlying skin conditions such as rosacea, acne, dermatitis and more. So your first port of call is to try and establish why you suffer from facial redness. This will then help you to select the right skincare and makeup products to best nurture and conceal your complexion. Get a clean start Prior to commencing your makeup routine, make sure you cleanse and moisturise your face with appropriate products for your specific skin condition. Just remember though, as much as you think your skin might need that soothing surge of moisture, applying too much cream can overdose our skin with actives which can sensitize it. Take only the size of a pea and gently pat the product into the skin to allow it to absorb slowly. If you have rosacea, Pevonia’s RS2 line is an absolute must! Specifically designed for those suffering from rosacea or skin conditions linked to rosacea, the RS2 Cleanser and RS2 Moisturiser will target those problems such as broken capillaries, persistent redness and congestion, desensitizing, soothing and decongesting skin.“I have had mild rosacea for about 10 years, and I've tried many products and I can honestly say that this is the only one I love and trust. It comforts and soothes my skin, reducing redness and leaving my skin wonderfully soft. I've learnt not to experiment with anything else now - this is all that I need.” Michelle W For blemishes and breakouts, we highly recommend Medicalia’s Clarifying Cleanser and Cream, as they work to effectively combat inflammation while controlling bacteria and acne lesions with Glycolic Acid, Salicylic Acid, Sorbitol, and other soothing and protective ingredients.“Been using this cleanser for a year now. Keeps my sebaceous filaments in check and has helped control my hormonal acne better than any other cleanser I’ve used.” Sophie H If it’s a flushed face we love Phytomer Accept Soothing Cleansing Milk and Douceur Marine Velvety Soothing Cream. This dream team soothes skin without irritation and acts to reduce redness while calming the sensations of any burning or stinging. Phytomer’s Douceur Marine Velvety Soothing Cream also strengthens the skin's natural defences against environmental aggression (climate, pollution, stress etc.).“After much trial and error, I’ve finally found a moisturizer that protects, softens, and reduces the look of redness on my very sensitive skin. I’ve been using it for a year and still can’t believe how cool, calm, and smooth its made my skin feel. This moisturizer is everything and I would recommend it to anyone who suffers from redness and sensitivities. Thank you Phytomer!” Samantha A Apply an SPF Applying a daily spf is a must. You already know your skin is sensitive, so overexposure to sunlight will only aggravate this, and remember even on cool, cloudy days it is possible for your skin to still burn.If you have rosacea, we are in love with Medicalia’s Sunscreen SPF 40 with Blue Light Shield. Featuring an ultra-hydrating, non-comedogenic and light textured formula it delivers anti-irritation benefits, hydration, comfort and coolness to sensitive, hyperpigmented and allergy prone skin. For blemishes and breakouts we highly recommend Pevonia’s YouthRenew Tinted Cream SPF 30. Lightweight, age-defying and pore refining, it delivers instant radiance while effectively protecting your complexion.“I love how smooth and blemish free this makes my face look. It is the best tinted cream I have tried.” Kylie J If it’s a flushed face we suggest ELES Luminous Defence Brightening Day Protection 50. Formulated with White Lotus Flower extract, it helps calm, repair and brighten skin. “I haven't used this product for long but it feels great going on and leaves my skin feeling soft and bright.” Natalee C Use a primer A makeup primer will help ensure your makeup remains in place all day! And let’s face it we don’t be wanting that makeup to slide off our skin and reveal a flushed complexion or unruly blemishes at any point right? Plus wearing a primer also creates a barrier between your skin and your makeup therefore preventing any further irritation. If you have rosacea, opt for ELES’s Retexturising Face Primer. The lightweight serum helps protect and condition sensitive skin, neutralize imperfections and give foundation a fault-free base.“One word to describe this product? Incredible. I had no idea makeup would stay put on my face so long before this product - just thought it was not possible!I'd tried other primers, and yes they smoothed out my skin, but as for lasting power? Non-existent. I'm never changing from Retexturising Primer ever! The tiniest bit really does go the longest way too. Great value. Great product.” Lucy G For blemishes and breakouts ELES’s Pore Perfecting Face Primer is a must-have! This light-textured, oil free face primer combats shine, absorbs excess oil, reduces the appearance of large open pores, promotes antiseptic properties and keeps foundation looking flawless!“A small amount goes a long way. Helps keep my oil controlled. Also, feels lovely.” Laurie B If it’s a flushed face we can’t get enough of ELES’s Retexture Crème Face Primer, it hydrates, soothes, calms and plumps skin with Aloe Barbadensis Gel, Chamomile Extract, Witch Hazel & Marigold.“Recently Received this Primer and it's now kicked my other primer out of the running for "go to" primer.” Sakura M Use the right tools The way you apply your makeup is almost as important as the products you use. Instead use a damp Pro-blender! It is the least irritating way to apply your product and honestly provides the most effective results! Not only is the sponge strangely soothing on your skin, it provides a more natural-looking coverage. Less is more so keep makeup simple If you have rosacea or are suffering from acne the likelihood is your foundation could be exacerbating your condition and wearing multiple products from concealer to foundation to blush to illuminator can cause over stimulation, so you need to choose wisely - there are a number of amazing products out there that actually work with your skin to correct its colour rather than just conceal it.If you have rosacea, you don’t want to over stimulate the skin by using too many products! So reach for multi-tasking products that treat, prime, conceal and even tone in one. We are talking about CC Creams. Unlike tinted moisturisers, foundations and even BB Creams, these miracle formulas are colour correcting. So instead of applying a thick layer of opaque makeup to cover the redness, the ELES CC Cream’s Photonic Crystal Technology “offsets” redness, and other skin imperfections, subtly illuminating the skin.“I have only just tried the ELES CC Cream after years of using the Mineral Foundation. I am really enjoying the CC cream! I find it smooths and evens out my pigments and lasts all throughout the day. I also have been mixing it with my Mineral Foundation for nighttime! Great product ELES, thank you!!” Georgina F For blemishes and breakouts excess oil production is a key cause of blemishes so oil-free formulas will be your best friend. Always apply your foundation first, then apply concealer to affected areas only. This will ensure a smoother even base and a more natural finish but be sure to keep every layer light though – the secret to successful makeup for blemish prone skin! Less product to block the skin causing heat! The ELES global best-seller – Liquid Powder Mineral Foundation will be your perfect pick, hypoallergenic and oil-free it allows your skin to breathe freely while providing the sunscreen and anti-oxidant protection ultrasensitive and reactive skin needs. It’s also best to opt for a concealer with some yellow tones to help colour correct redness.“Great product that I have been using for some time. It looks natural on and covers blemishes beautifully.” Kylie J If it’s a flushed face but neither of the above, you have a lot more flexibility with product choice. A CC Cream or Liquid Powder Mineral Foundation are still both great options, but if powder tends to be your go-to try the ELES Mineral Powder Foundation, a firm favourite of mine! The lightweight powder easily adjusts from sheer to richer, more opaque coverage as you build and is highly compatible with common skin sensitivities. It perfectly camouflages imperfections and facial redness and protects against ultraviolet damage too.“This is the only mineral powder foundation I have come across that I can actually use - the others leave my dry skin parched - but not this one. Blends beautifully and provides excellent coverage. Feels light as a feather. I sponge a little extra over my blemishes - covers redness and uneven skin tone without the caked on feeling of foundation and/or concealer, and I also use an eyeshadow brush to apply it to my eyelids as it is a fantastic base for eyeshadow. The packaging is just gorgeous too!” Rebecca V Always remove makeup before bed Sleeping with a face full of makeup can and will result in skin irritability and breakouts. Makeup not only traps dead skin cells it also blocks our pores and when pores are blocked the skin can’t breathe and therefore regenerate so make sure you commit to removing every inch of makeup before hitting the hay.To learn more about sleeping in makeup and what it really does to our skin click here.

Also, feels so lovely.” Lauri ELES Mineral Foundation PowderIf you are prone to oily skin, it’s best to steer clear of foundation with a dewy finish and instead opt for a matte, semi-matte powder or oil-free foundation. A handy powder compact should be the one staple in your beauty bag, that can come with you wherever you go for those times you need to do a little ‘touch up’. Just be sure to avoid illuminating powder with shimmer as this will only draw attention to skin texture and exacerbate pore size. Instead, opt for a translucent pore-minimising and oil-absorbent powder.Mineral makeup works wonders on oily skin because the particles tend to absorb moisture, preventing shine. The ELES Mineral Powder Foundation enables you to adjust your coverage from a translucent powder to a buildable coverage foundation with a richer, more opaque finish. What’s more, it’s formulated with skin loving ingredients including vitamins A & E, so it’ll provide antioxidant protection as well as condition skin!“Love this foundation, you can make it as light or heavy as you want. It sits really nice on the skin and doesn’t clog my pores. I have combination skin and this foundation lasts all day.” Chrissy ELES Liquid Powder Mineral FoundationIf power isn’t your thing and you’re a lover of liquid foundations but are concerned about slippage, fear not. The ELES Liquid Powder Mineral Foundation is ELES’s global best-seller for many a reason! One being its long-lasting staying power no matter what your skin condition. It’s packed with goodness including an exclusive multi mineral complex as well as vitamins A, C & E but its formula while it goes on as a silky liquid, sets to a soft powder finish, perfect for those with combination and oily skin. What’s more, it allows skin to breath freely so it won’t clog up those pores leading to unwanted blemishes!“Love this product! It beautifully sets from liquid to powder! Great for oily skin or skin which becomes shiny during the day.” Laura Pevonia Phyto-Gel CleanserJust because you have oily skin doesn’t mean you need to use a harsh face wash to dry your skin out! No sireee. Using a face wash that is too harsh or strong can irritate your skin and in turn, trigger increased oil production! It works by removing the excess and unnecessary oil from the skin’s surface, unclogging pores and ridding it of impurities and surface toxins.“Beautiful deep cleansing, non-drying cleanser. This product has been a favourite of my customers, especially those with normal, combination or oily skin.” Lisa Pevonia Mattifying Oily Skin CreamThis cream should be your go-to if you suffer from an overly oily complexion.
