At-home facial peels: Benefits, tips and the best products

by Jo Boyden on Apr 30 2026
When it comes to achieving brighter, smoother, more refined skin, few treatments deliver results quite like a face peel! But if the phrase “face peel” makes you want to run for the hills, you may not have discovered the gentle, DYI at-home options now available for all skin types too! Choosing the right one can literally transform the look of your skin, helping to improve texture, tone and overall radiance, and all from the comfort of your own home (although who doesn’t love a visit to their local salon or spa.) Sound like something your skin could benefit from? Then keep reading, because we’re breaking down everything you need to know about at-home face peels, including how they work, who they’re best for, and the products worth adding to your routine!   So, what is an at-home face peel? At-home face peels are one of those skincare treatments that can deliver truly rewarding results from the first application when they’re used properly. They’re designed to remove dead skin cells, accelerate cell turnover and reveal fresher, smoother skin underneath, so better texture and a brighter, more refined complexion! And thanks to the variety of formulas now available, there’s something to suit almost every skin type and concern. Unlike physical scrubs, peels work either enzymatically or chemically to gently dissolve the bonds that hold dull, lifeless skin on the surface.   What does a face peel do? Face peels are one of the most effective ways to improve your skin tone and texture! They work by helping to exfoliate the skin more deeply than a basic cleanser or exfoliator. Depending on the formula, a face peel may use enzymes, AHAs or other resurfacing ingredients to loosen dead skin cells and encourage a smoother, fresher-looking surface. That can help improve the look of: Dullness. Uneven texture. Congestion and blackheads. Fine lines. Mild pigmentation. Rough or lacklustre skin.   When used correctly, peels can also help other skincare products absorb more effectively, since they’re not having to compete with a buildup of dead skin on the surface. So, if your skin is looking uneven, lacking radiance or feeling congested we can’t tell you enough how the right face peel with make a huge difference!   Understanding the different types of peels and the right one for you At-home face peels have come a long way. What was once considered a professional-only treatment is now available in formulas that are effective, easy to use and suitable for a range of skin types. The key is knowing which one to choose, and how to use it correctly. Enzyme Peels  These are the gentlest form of peel. They work by using natural enzymes (often fruit derived papaya and pineapple) to very gently break down dead skin cells, dissolve buildup on the skin’s surface and smooth and soften without irritation (which can come with some stronger chemical peels) making them ideal for sensitive skin. Top recommendations: Pevonia Enzymo Spherides Peeling Cream Best for: Sensitive skin, dullness, uneven texture. Beginner-friendly This is a beautiful option if you want a more gentle, enzyme-based peel and one I recommend to everyone who wants results without irritation. Its uses pineapple and papaya enzymes to gently dissolve impurities, dead skin cells and buildup, and combined with chamomile, calendula, ginkgo biloba and lemon peel oil, it leaves your complexion smoother, brighter and instantly refreshed. No tingling, no redness, just glow (honestly). It’s the perfect option if you’re new to peels! Simply apply a thin layer to cleansed skin, wet your fingertips with warm water (this will help to ‘wake up’ the enzymes) and work the peeling cream with gentle massage movements into skin (keeping away from the eyes), leave on for 5 minutes and then wet your fingers with warm water again and re-work one more time. Remove product thoroughly with pads moist with warm water and then cleanse your face with the appropriate cleanser according to skin type.  “Don't let the peeling word scare you. I've been using this product for 20 years (I'm 45yo now). Back then it was to help gently clear my skin with those pesky zits (rather than roughly exfoliate), and now I use it to slough away dead skin and keep me looking younger. It's the enzymes. The day after I use this product, I have people at work comment on how good my skin looks. (I don't wear makeup). People routinely say I look 7 years younger than I am. This is a non-negotiable must have product!” – Dee M   Naturys Sensitive Enzymatic Peeling Cream Best for: Ultra‑sensitive, reactive or compromised skin If you want to discover the results of a peel but your skin gets upset easily, this is your safest bet. Specifically designed for delicate and sensitive skin, it uses lemon and apple extracts, soybean oil, rice bran oil and grape skin combined with super‑gentle botanical enzymes to exfoliate without friction or acids while calming and nourishing skin. Think of it as a soft reset for your skin! Smoother, clearer and more radiant, without any risk of irritation. To use it simply apply to clean, dry skin one to two times a week.   Massage gently over the face, avoiding the eye area, and leave on for 5–7 minutes to allow the enzymes to work.  Rinse thoroughly with warm water. Follow with a toner and moisturiser for best results.   Acid based (chemical) Peels These are more active than enzyme peels and work deeper to refine texture, improve tone and support collagen renewal. They are incredibly effective and results-driven, targeting pigmentation, fine lines and congestion. They are an amazing option for those who aren’t concerned with sensitive or reactive skin. Top recommendations:  Vie Collection Glyco 10 Resurfacing Acid Concentrate Best for: pigmentation, fine lines, stubborn texture  This is a more advanced peel and it’s a standout! Plus it’s great for the majority of skin types! Instead of a cream-based formula that you remove, this is a light gel with 10% glycolic acid, so it works deeper into the skin to refine texture, smooth wrinkles, brighten skin, fade dark spots and refine pores! If you want a clinic‑style result at home, this is the one for you! It’s a great choice for skin that wants a more noticeable smoothing effect and is ideal if you’re targeting pigmentation, uneven tone or signs of ageing. Just be sure to start slowly though and build up as your skin adjusts.  To use it apply 1–2 drops to cleansed face and neck (as you would a serum) and then apply your moisturiser. Once skin has adjusted use 1 to 3 times per week. Avoid the eye area and always apply sunscreen during the day when using exfoliating products. “My therapist recommended this concentrate to me for daily exfoliation. I have rosacea and very sensitive skin and this is gentle enough to not cause any irritation but it’s extremely effective. I use it twice daily and my skin is very soft and smooth as a result.” – Amelia   Vie Collection Night Peel Progressive Resurfacing Cream Best for: Ageing skin, uneven tone, long‑term results  This peel (and overnight treatment) is perfect for those wanting consistent results without the intensity of a traditional peel.  It’s a progressive peel meaning it works gently and slowly overnight while you sleep, this means less irritation and more consistent results. It uses a blend of AHAs (glycolic acid) and resurfacing actives to boost cell turnover and gradually smooth, brighten and refine the skin so you’ll wake up with a fresher, more luminous complexion by morning, and results get better week after week! It’s great if you want a peel that fits seamlessly into your nightly routine. Unlike traditional peels it’s not a rinse off treatment, you leave it on overnight just like you do your night moisturiser. “I just turned 63 and decided to spend a bit more money on a night peel product. I saw that this product and thought I would give it a try. I did and couldn't be happier! My face looks smoother, definitely softer and any imperfections are gone.” – Nicole   Hybrid Peels Hybrid face peels combine multiple exfoliation methods, typically chemical (AHAs), enzymatic and sometimes gentle physical exfoliation, all in one formula. This allows it to resurface the skin effectively while remaining gentle. The result is smoother, brighter skin with less irritation, making it ideal for those wanting results without a harsh, aggressive peel  Top recommendation:  Phytomer Resurfacing Peel Best for: dullness, rough texture, uneven tone  This is your “instant results” peel. It is formulated with marine AHA’s (seaweed derived acids) that work to loosen and dissolve dead skin cells smoothing skin and improving radiance. Combined with Bacillus Ferment (enzyme) it helps gently refine your skin too. It also contains Lithothamnium Calcareum (algae powder) which provides a light manual exfoliation effect which helps enhance the overall result. So in short it helps smooth the skin, refine pores and boost radiance without compromising skin comfort. The combination of effective exfoliation with a gentle approach, makes it suitable for regular use so it’s a brilliant weekly option for anyone wanting a noticeable glow boost! All you need to do is apply a small amount to damp skin (again avoiding the eye contour). Leave on for five minutes, then gently massage with circular movements for up to one minute. Rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water and follow with your usual skincare cream.  “AMAZING PRODUCT! One of my favorite Phytomer products!!! I use it once a week and my face always looks glowing and so fresh! Plus, my acne has dramatically improved since using this. I can tell when I skip a week (because I'm lazy)....my face looks dull and lifeless. This is a MUST PURCHASE product!!!” – Jill F    How to use an at-home face peel safely  Using a peel correctly is key to getting results without irritation! Remember to start slowly! Start with once a week (depending on the strength of the formula), or less if your skin is sensitive. Patch test first if you’re unsure, and follow the product instructions carefully, especially when using stronger acid-based formulas. Make sure you always apply your peel to clean, dry skin, following the specific instructions and using in the evening is best.  Make sure you don’t combine your peel with other strong actives on the same night and always follow with a hydrating serum or moisturiser to support the skin barrier. And most importantly wear SPF daily, as exfoliated skin is more sensitive to the sun.   At-home face peels can be a fantastic way to give your skin a noticeable refresh. Think a smoother, brighter and more refined complexion. The key is choosing the right formula for your skin type and using it thoughtfully, so you get all the glow, smoothness and clarity without anu irritation.

Niacinamide: Is it good for acne?

by Jo Boyden on Oct 25 2024
If you’ve been on the hunt for a skincare ingredient that tackles acne without being harsh, chances are you've heard of niacinamide. But does this popular ingredient really live up to the hype when it comes to fighting acne? Keep reading as we discuss what makes niacinamide a skincare superstar and why it really is one of the best ingredients for acne-prone skin.   What is niacinamide? Niacinamide, also known as vitamin B3, is a powerful yet gentle ingredient that works wonders for all skin types. Unlike some acne treatments that can dry or irritate your skin, niacinamide is non-irritating and offers a range of benefits beyond just clearing up breakouts. It strengthens the skin barrier, reduces inflammation, and improves skin texture—all while keeping your skin calm and hydrated too!   How does niacinamide help with acne? Niacinamide is a superstar when it comes to acne thanks to its versatile benefits. It helps; Reduce inflammation Niacinamide is known for its anti-inflammatory properties, which help soothe redness and irritation often associated with acne. It calms angry breakouts and speeds up the healing process. Regulate oil production One of the main culprits behind acne is excess oil production. Niacinamide helps balance your skin's oil levels, reducing the chances of clogged pores and new breakouts. Minimise pores Large, clogged pores are a breeding ground for acne. Niacinamide helps refine the appearance of pores, making them less visible and reducing the chances of future pimples. Fade acne marks Struggling with post-acne scars and dark spots? Niacinamide helps brighten and even out your complexion, fading those pesky marks over time.   Why niacinamide is perfect for acne-prone skin Unlike harsher ingredients like benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid, niacinamide is gentle on the skin. It works behind the scenes to clear up acne without causing dryness, flakiness, or irritation. Plus, it’s suitable for all skin types, including sensitive skin, making it the perfect solution for anyone dealing with breakouts.   How to use niacinamide for the best results To get the most out of niacinamide, look for serums or moisturisers containing a higher concentration. Niacinamide can be layered with other acne treatments or used on its own, and it pairs well with ingredients like hyaluronic acid and peptides. Just apply it after cleansing and before moisturising, and we promise you’ll soon notice smoother, clearer skin.   The best niacinamide rich products for blemish and acne prone skin Naturys Deep Purifying Serum Containing a purifying complex of niacinamide, bakuchiol with vitamin c, this soothing serum has been specifically formulated for oily and combination skin types. Formulated with niacinamide, bakuchiol and peptides, it balances the sebaceous gland activity, purifies the skin, removes imperfections and provides skin with outstanding anti-ageing and regenerating effects - combatting wrinkles and skin sagging. The most searched skin concerns: Expert approved solutions

The most searched skin concerns: Expert approved solutions

by Jo Boyden on Oct 04 2024
When it comes to our skin, we all have our individual concerns, but how many of us have actually taken to google to seek solutions? And what skin conditions are people searching the most? Well we did a little investigating, and the results might actually surprise you, especially if you’ve been feeling alone with your skin woes. From rosacea and acne to hyperpigmentation and wrinkles, keep reading as we count down the most searched skin conditions on google this year and our expert solutions to tackle them! Rosacea As a supplier or some of the worlds leading professional products, it comes as no surprise to our team at BC that this skin condition is the most searched. Rosacea is said to affect up to a fifth of the population so if you are a sufferer you most certainly are not alone! To learn more about Rosacea, it’s causes and the best solutions, click here. Or if it’s makeup recommendations you’re after, you can find our expert suggestions here. Acne As the second most commonly searched skin condition, acne continues to be a leading concern, especially among younger demographics. I’m sure many of us have experienced unruly blemishes in our time, whether we suffered from pimples as an adolescent or if they have come to haunt you in adulthood, but many amongst us are prone to acne. What exactly is acne you might ask? And could you have it? Click here to find out all there is you know. And if you’re searching for the best makeup products to conceal and heal your acne you can find our top recommendations here. Blackheads Not far behind acne is blackheads. And yes, I’m certain when I say we have all dealt with a black head or two, or many more in our time! Blackheads are in fact a type of acne (acne vulgaris). They're open bumps on the skin that fill with excess oil and dead skin. They look as if dirt is in the bump, but an irregular light reflection off the clogged follicle actually causes the dark spots. To learn more about blackheads and shop our highly recommended solutions click here. Hyperpigmentation Hyperpigmentation, including melasma and age spots (also known as dark spots, sun spots and liver spots), is another frequent search, particularly as people seek solutions to even out their skin tone and reduce dark spots. The condition most commonly occurs due to overproduction of melanin, the natural pigment in the skin, which is why it’s often exacerbated during the sunny summer months (thank you sunshine!) However, it can also occur due to inflammation caused from conditions like acne, just what you don’t need, and while hyperpigmentation can be hard to avoid for some, you can definitely help reduce its severity by following a few key steps. To learn everything you need to know about hyperpigmentation including the causes and the best treatments click here. Age spots Next on the list is age spots. As mentioned above age spots are a common form of hyperpigmentation. They are flat, dark patches that commonly appear on areas of the skin that are frequently exposed to the sun (like the face, hands, shoulders and arms) this is due to prolonged sun exposure as well as ageing. Age spots are harmless they can make people feel self conscious. The great news is there are means to dramatically reduce their appearance with skincare solutions as previously mentioned.  The best skincare solutions include using broad-spectrum sunscreen daily to prevent further darkening, and incorporating brightening treatments with ingredients like Vitamin C, niacinamide, and hydroquinone. Regular exfoliation with AHAs (alpha hydroxy acids) or retinol can also help fade existing spots by promoting skin cell turnover and revealing fresher, clearer skin underneath. If you want to know the best products to treat your age spots click here. Whiteheads At the top of many people’s woes are whiteheads. Like with blackheads, I’m sure the majority, if not all of us have not experienced these little bumps many a time. Another common type of acne, whiteheads occur when pores become clogged with oil, dead skin cells, and bacteria. Unlike blackheads though, which as previously mentioned are open to the surface and turn dark due to oxidation, whiteheads remain closed, creating small, white or flesh-coloured bumps. They typically appear on the face, particularly in areas like the forehead, nose, and chin, but can also occur on the chest, shoulders, and back. While they may seem harmless, we know whiteheads can be frustrating to deal with, especially if they keep coming back. Luckily, with the right skincare routine, you can keep whiteheads at bay and maintain a clearer, healthier complexion. Just be sure you cleanse twice a day, morning and night and look for ingredients like salicylic acid, which helps to unclog pores and prevent new whiteheads from forming. Exfoliation is also paramount as it helps remove dead skin cells that can clog pores and lead to whiteheads. Opt for chemical exfoliants like AHAs (alpha hydroxy acids) or BHAs (beta hydroxy acids), such as glycolic acid or salicylic acid. These acids help dissolve the buildup inside pores, keeping them clear and preventing future breakouts. We LOVE the ProCorrective Clear Control Exfoliator.  Formulated with Salicylic Acid, Caviar Lime, Tea Tree and Rosemary, it provides gentle but effective exfoliating action to open and clear pores, combatting acne-causing bacteria. Dry skin I’m sure we’ve all experienced dry skin at some point in our lives but many struggle with this skin condition all year round. If your skin has been feeling somewhat tight of late, itchy and irritated even, or if you’re prone to dry patches and flakiness on your face, it’s likely you have dry skin too! But what exactly is causing your dry complexion you might ask? And why doesn’t your current skincare routine appear to be working to help counteract this condition? As we can see from the search volume, at #7 on the most searched skin conditions, dry skin is very common and can affect anyone at any age. Typically, it happens when our sebaceous glands don’t produce enough oil (sebum) and our skin in turn loses too much water. This is because our natural oils help trap in moisture to keep the skin soft, smooth and supple, if there isn’t enough oil, moisture can escape, leaving the top layer of skin prone to dryness. Unfortunately, the lack of oil production is caused by a number of external factors including genetics (thanks parents!), dry air or indoor heating, over exfoliating, long hot shower (who doesn’t love one of those!). harsh products, ageing and hard water (tap water that contains a high concentration of minerals including calcium and magnesium, this hard water can change the pH balance of your skin as well as leave a film over your skin’s surface that may clog pores, cause dryness and even trigger breakouts, itching and flaking! Ouch. When it comes to improving your dry skin we cant go past these top skincare recommendations from the experts.   Wrinkles Starting to see signs of ageing on your face? Worried about wrinkles? According to the google search you are most definitely not alone! In fact, wrinkles are a major concern for both men and women, so much so that wrinkle injections are a fast-growing market, accounting for almost 40% of cosmetic surgery procedures performed in the world, and 70% of aesthetic medicine interventions. But what if Botox and the likes aren’t for you? Are there safer, natural and needle-free alternatives that really work to diminish the appearance of wrinkles? In short yes! While there is no serum or wrinkle cream that can magically make wrinkles disappear in a week quite like Botox, thanks to the advancement in both technology and skincare ingredients, the natural alternatives can seriously achieve similar smoothing and plumping results. What’s more these non-invasive topical alternatives give you more control over the change in your appearance (no poker-face in sight!), provide a much more natural look, plus when used daily as part of your skincare routine will achieve outstanding on-going results. Want to know what the best products to fight skin ageing and reduce your wrinkles are? Click here.   Oily skin If you’re fed up with your face feeling greasy every single day, you’re constantly looking for ways to prevent your makeup sliding off your skin by mid-morning, or you’re simply over staring in the mirror and seeing a super shiny complexion staring back (and not because you’ve been adopting the ‘hyper glowing skin’ trend of late), it’s time to get serious about your oily skin condition. Despite oily skin being a nuisance, believe it or not, it’s actually not all doom and gloom! Oily skin happens when the sebaceous glands in your skin make too much sebum. Sebum is the waxy, oily substance that protects and hydrates the skin (it’s actually a blessing as it’s vital for keeping the skin super healthy and youthful looking) however, too much sebum can lead to oily skin! This in turn results in your greasy, shiny complexion and can also result in clogged pores, and unwanted acne if not treated! Fear not though, with the right routine for oily skin you can keep this skin condition of yours at bay!

Salicylic acid: What is it and how will it benefit your skin

Salicylic acid: What is it and how will it benefit your skin

by Jo Boyden on Aug 17 2024
Whether you’re battling breakouts, dealing with oily skin, or just looking for a way to keep your complexion clear, you’ll want to ensure salicylic acid is an ingredient in your skincare! But what exactly is salicylic acid? And how does it transform you skin? Keep reading for everything you need to know about salicylic acid—why it’s so effective, how to use it, and why it deserves a spot in your skincare routine. What is salicylic acid? Salicylic acid is a beta hydroxy acid (BHA) known for its exfoliating and anti-inflammatory properties, commonly used in skincare. it penetrates deep into the pores, dissolving excess oil and exfoliating dead skin cells. This helps prevent and treat breakouts, blackheads, and whiteheads. Unlike some harsher acne treatments, salicylic acid is gentle yet effective, making it suitable for frequent use (we are talking 2-3 times a week). Incorporating salicylic acid into your skincare routine can lead to clearer, smoother skin! How does salicylic acid work? By breaking down the bonds between dead skin cells, salicylic acid encourages their shedding, which helps to prevent pore blockages that lead to breakouts. Is salicylic acid suitable for all skin types? Salicylic acid is ideal for those with oily or acne-prone skin, as it helps control excess oil production and prevents the formation of new pimples. However, it can also benefit other skin types, particularly those who are susceptible to the occasional breakout or congested skin. Can salicylic acid cause skin irritation? Salicylic acid can sometimes cause skin irritation, especially if you use it excessively or tend to have sensitive skin.  Common signs of irritation include redness, dryness, peeling, or a burning sensation. Just before you test the product first before applying all over your face. How often should you use salicylic acid? How often you use skincare formulated with salicylic acid really depends on the product itself as well your skin specific skin type. If you are new to salicylic acid, we recommend you start with using it once or twice a week and gradually increase to daily use if your skin tolerates it. It's also important to follow up with a good moisturiser to keep your skin hydrated. Can you use salicylic acid with other skincare ingredients? Yes, you can use salicylic acid with other skincare ingredients, but it's important to be cautious. Combining salicylic acid with soothing and hydrating ingredients like niacinamide and hyaluronic acid, can work wonders for your skin. However, be careful when combining it with other exfoliants like glycolic acid or retinol, as this can increase the risk of irritation. It's best to introduce these ingredients gradually into your routine or use them on alternate days to avoid over-exfoliating your skin. How to incorporate salicylic acid into your skincare routine Start with a cleanser containing salicylic acid, using it slowly to allow your skin to adjust. If your skin tolerates it well, you can gradually increase usage or introduce additional products like serums or spot treatments. Always follow with a moisturiser and sunscreen, as salicylic acid can make your skin more sensitive to the sun. The best salicylic acid products Vie Collection Cleansing Gel with Glycolic, Lactic and Salicylic Acids - This foaming cleansing gel combines glycolic, lactic and salicylic acids to stimulate cellular activity, break the intercellular glue between dead cells and thoroughly cleanse skin. shrink pores fast

5 ways to effectively reduce your pores

by Jo Boyden on Aug 03 2020
If you suffer from uneven skin tone or your enlarged pores appear to be a permanent feature on your face, we feel you.Believe it or not, many of us are as obsessed with our pore size, as we are with skin ageing! But why is it some of us suffer from large pores? And how can you shrink them fast?As we age, our body produces less Elastin and Collagen and without these two, our skin becomes much less supple and starts to sag. It’s the collagen in our skin which actually strengthens the walls of our pores, making them tighter, so when this breaks down with age our pores become enlarged! And to make matters worse, when these enlarged pores become clogged with oil and dead skin cells, blackhead and whiteheads may form. When bacteria comes in contact with these two, a pimple is born! So something which we thought was associated with teenage years can return to haunt us when we hit our 30’s and 40’s +!While your pore size is genetic (thank you parents!) and therefore you can’t alter its structure, the good news is there are a number of tips and treatments you can live by, which will help not only reduce pore size but leave you with smooth and even skin too! Introduce an exfoliating cleanser And not just any old exfoliator, one formulated with AHA’s (Alpha Hydroxy Acids) such as Citric Acid, Glycolic Acid and Lactic Acid, and/or BHA’s (Beta Hydroxy Acids) such as Salicylic acid. These are the holy grail of ingredients when it comes to penetrating and cleaning out your clogged pores, and clogged pores look bigger, fact. So by unblocking them you are already halfway there in terms of reducing their size. While all four acids exfoliate on a cellular level, Glycolic, Citric and Lactic works on a more surface level to brighten and smooth your skin, whereas Salicylic Acid penetrates much deeper to effectively remove dead skin cells clogged in pores. For those who are more prone to pimples, we highly recommend Pevonia’s Clarigel Exfoliating Cleanser. Formulated with both Citric and Salicylic Acid, it delivers intensive cleansing for problematic skin, gently removing impurities and rendering skin clear, clean and smooth. For those with enlarged pores we are loving Vie Colletion’s Renewing Exfoliating Cream. Designed to make the skin look renewed, radiant and youthful (yes please!) it smoothes away roughness while dramatically reducing large pores appearance! Use a skin primer A good skin primer will become your lifeline if you are prone to oily skin. Not only will it stop your foundation from sliding off your face quite literally, it’ll keep your base smooth while reducing the appearance of pores (and fine lines!)I’ve tried many a primer in my time but as a sufferer of oily skin and pores on the, let’s say slightly larger side! My go-to is the ELES Pore Perfecting Face Primer. It’s oil-free (of course), perfectly lightweight and seems to combat shine almost instantly. It contains a natural Dermat Complex which enables it to absorb oil and effectively reduce pore size in one hit. Wear sunscreen daily You hear this time and time again but we are serious. Do it. The number one cause of premature skin ageing is the sun. The less we wear sunscreen the sooner our collagen will break down causing skin to sag and pores to expand! Whether you choose to use a daily moisturiser or foundation with SPF is up to you, but using a sunscreen is paramount. We are in love with ELES Cosmetics’ best-selling Liquid Powder Mineral Foundation SPF 15, Free of pore-clogging oils, this silky, mineral-enriched liquid foundation with broad-spectrum sun protection, glides on velvety smooth but sets to a soft powder finish. It's ideal for all skin types even those with really oily skin and perfects your complexion while protecting against future damage. Opt for a pore perfecting moisturiser Yes it’s a thing! If you aren’t already using one, you simply must now. Formulated to quite literally refine pores for a smoother, flawless complexion free of shine you won’t believe the results. Our go-to is Pevonia’s Age Correction Micro-Pores Refine Cream. It’s a mattifying treatment cream which reduces oil production and pore size, while providing long-lasting hydration at the same time. Give retinol a go Hailed THE anti-ageing ingredient of the skincare world, retinol is known to not only slow down the signs of ageing (as a result of its ability to increase your skin’s collagen production) but also simultaneously decrease oil production which leads to smoother skin, fewer breakouts and tighter pores! If you haven’t before now, introducing a retinol cream at night will be a game changer for your skin, just be sure to opt for a more gentle retinol cream and slowly introduce it into your skincare routine as some can be a little sensitive to it at first, but the wait is soo worth it we promise! We highly recommend the Medicalia L Retinol Smoothing Cream. Combining Retinol with Glycolic and Lactic Acids (ah yes those two faithful pore perfecting acids again!) it is a must for resurfacing and regenerating skin for a smoother brighter appearance! To understand more about retinol read our guide to the best anti-ageing ingredient.

Acne explained: Which type do you suffer from and how to best treat it

by Jo Boyden on Feb 27 2020
Got a breakout? Suffer from acne but nothing seems to be improving it? The professionals at BC are here to help!First port of call is understanding acne, as mistreating the type you suffer from can actually have an adverse effect on the health of your skin. Sound familiar?Acne is one of the most common and frustrating beauty concerns and unfortunately there's no one-size-fits-all approach to treating it. The skin condition comes in many forms and is triggered by a variety of causes - from oily skin types, to hormone imbalance, bad diet, to simple genetics (thanks parents!) As a result each acne breakout has its own symptoms and therefore needs to be treated in a specific way. By arming yourself with the correct product for your particular breakout, will enable you to not only combat the problem head on, but prevent future breakouts too!Now read on for our guide to the six most common types of acne and how to best treat them.Blackheads Blackheads - technically called 'open comedones' - are small bumps that appear on your skin due to clogged hair follicles. They are one of the more mild types of acne and are often experienced by those with oily skin.TreatmentUsing a clay purifying mask once or twice a week will help draw out impurities in the skin. We highly recommend the Phytomer Citylife Radiance Reviving Mask, it instantly draws out impurities, unclogging pores while countering the effects of pollution (dehydration, signs of fatigue, dark spots and dull complexion.)“I used to suffer from annoying blackheads on my nose and forehead until this became my go-to product. I LOVE it. It reduces the size of my pores (I have oily skin with large pores), eliminates my blackheads and skin looks soo much healthier and glowy after application.” Siobhan WhiteheadsSimilarly to blackheads, whiteheads (also known as ‘closed comedones’) occur when pores on the skin become clogged with dead skin cells, oil and bacteria, however the two forms of acne produce different skin reactions. While blocked pores that stay open form blackheads, a whitehead is a blocked pore that closes, meaning they should be treated quite differently.TreatmentThe most effective ingredient used to treat whiteheads is salicylic acid, a beta-hydroxy acid (BHA) that works to open up your pores. We LOVE the Pevonia Clarigel Exfoliating Cleanser. Formulated with Salicylic Acid, Jojoba Seed Extract and Grapefruit oil, it provides gentle but effective exfoliating action to open and clear pores, combatting acne-causing bacteria.“BEST CLEANSER EVER! I've tried so many cleansers with salicylic acid, glycolic acid or a mix of both to help my blemished skin but they are all too drying. This cleanser is by far the best I have ever found. It thoroughly cleans my skin of all makeup and impurities and my skin feels so smooth afterwards. This is a winner!” ShelleyPapulesA papule is technically a small, raised bump on the skin, red in colour and swollen with inflammation. Like most forms of acne, papules are the result of an increase in oil and bacteria trapped inside the pore by dead skin cells. However papules occur when the clogging causes a hair follicle to become inflamed.TreatmentYou can effectively treat papules with drying lotions or spot treatments. They respond specifically well to the ingredient Benzoyl Peroxide. Our customers rave about the Pevonia Spot Treatment rich in Glycolic Acid, Aloe Vera and Benzoyl Peroxide. The Fast-acting and healing treatment combats blemish-causing bacteria and clears pores keeping breakouts at bay.“This product works WONDERS! It is a dry-it-up product that will zap up those lumpy, red pimples overnight - I have never seen anything remove a pimple so fast. Can’t get enough of it!” StellaPustulesIf a pore becomes extremely clogged, the skin begins to swell and a pustule is formed. Pustules are essentially infected pores which appear as a white dot surrounded by inflamed, red skin that swells into a bump.TreatmentNot dissimilar to other forms of less severe acne, pustules are best treated with key ingredients Salicylic Acid and Panthenol. The Phytomer Oligopur Blemish Target Gel is formulated with both key ingredients and effectively reduces existing blemishes while preventing new ones from forming. It also soothes the redness and inflammation to promote a more even complexion.“This product works almost overnight! It cleared up the tough break outs I had along my jawline that nothing else would.” AnnaCystsOne of the more extreme forms of acne, cystic breakouts (or cysts) lie deep within the layers of the skin and occur when the pores become blocked and severely infected. They appear as swollen (often painful) lumps under the skin, filled with pus that has nowhere to go. Because they are deep-rooted in the skin tissue they don’t always come to a head and can reappear in the same place and often leave scars.TreatmentCystic breakouts call for the big guns! A powerhouse of ingredients to work deep within the skin. We couldn’t recommend the Medicalia Spot Treatment more highly. This potent professional-grade targeted treatment formulated with Mucor Meihei, Phytic Acid, and Sea Whip, diminishes follicular accumulation of keratin, controls bacteria, and reduces inflammation with noticeable improvement in skin healing. Comedolytic and Keratolytic, this product decreases the risk of scarring and prevents post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.“At the first sign of a breakout, I dab on the treatment and the blemish goes away before it comes to an ugly outcome. I have recommended this to all my friends who are in need. Would recommend it to everyone!!!!” Rose NodulesLike cysts, nodular pimples (nodules) are one of the most severe forms of acne. They're slightly different to cysts in that they never form a head, instead just a hard bump under the skin’s surface which tends to be very painful.TreatmentNodular acne usually needs pretty intensive treatment so visiting your local salon or spa will be your best bet to finding a solution, however ingredients such as zinc and sulfur can definitely reduce the size of the nodules. Our top pick is the Pevonia SpaTeen Blemish-B-Gone, an alcohol-free targeted treatment which helps to heal all types of blemishes through a Micro-Matrix advanced time-release delivery system with Sulfur, Organic Benzoyl Peroxide and Organic Salicylic Acid.“I am not a teen but this product works great for my blemishes! It reduces the size of the spots in only one application. I would recommend this to anyone who suffers from acne, even the big lumps!” Sarah

ENLARGED PORE: Truths and Common Misconceptions

by Jo Boyden on Mar 01 2018
If you don’t like the size of your pores, read up! Here are common truths and myths about this whole pore thing:The TRUTH will set you freeIf you’ve been wondering… Yes, POREXIA is a thing! There are two types of pores. Having pores is healthy and essential. UV rays can make them look larger. Hormones can also make them look larger. Enlarged pores come with age. Over-washing your face makes them bigger. Men have larger pores. Many of us are obsessed with our pore size and if we’re given a chance to make them smaller, we would! Some of us are even more worried about our pores than our wrinkles.Oil pores are hair follicles that contain sebaceous glands. These produce sebum (oil) that causes our pimples. Sweat glands are very small and don’t cause irritation. Both are very important to our health. Sweat pores are our body’s breathing holes, transporting unwanted substances out of the body. Oil pores are needed for hair to grow and hair is needed to protect skin. The average adult has about 20,000 pores on their face. When pores become clogged with oil and dead skin cells, blackhead and whiteheads may form. When bacteria comes in contact with these two, a pimple is born!Ultraviolet rays weaken collagen and without collagen, our pores become less tight. Decreased elasticity causes them to enlarge. When hormones spike during OVULATION, our pores enlarge and will shrink again when hormone levels decrease. Hormonal shift during PREGNANCY and MENOPAUSE also do the same. So yes, mood swings and pores are related. Try to relax during these trying times. As we age, our body produces less Elastin and Collagen and without these two, our skin sag and our pores become enlarged. This is something inevitable but can be managed. WE WILL REVEAL OUR NEW SOLUTION LATER IN THIS ARTICLE.Wash your face twice a day – morning and evening. Washing too often can dry the skin leaving more dead skin cells on the surface.Men have larger pores than women. Because men are naturally more active, their oil glands produce more oil and so their pores appear more visible. The Pore MYTHology Blackhead is dirt. You can close pores. Toothpaste can tighten pores, just like how it solves acne problems. Blackhead is oxidized oil, not dirt. Sebum is usually white. There may sometimes be dirt but blackhead is mostly oil.Pores dilate and can change from wide to narrow but you can’t totally close them. You can only TIGHTEN them.Never put toothpaste on your face. Toothpaste doesn’t cure acne and it certainly doesn’t clean and tighten pores. It will only cause irritation. Use proper skincare products that address your skin concerns. If large pores have always been a problem for you, fret not!
