No one wants to apply the wrong products and risk exacerbating their already inflamed or irritated skin! But what if you don’t know what ingredients you should be looking out for? Well you’ve come to the right place. We have asked the BC experts which soothing ingredients (and products!) they would recommend, the best for sensitive skin. Keep reading as we reveal them all.

Antioxidants: Why these anti-agers are so important

We are told to eat a diet rich in antioxidants every day, but when it comes to our skin, applying products rich in antioxidants can be game changing too. But what exactly are antioxidants, and why are they so essential for our skin? Keep reading for our guide on these age-defying skin saviours, from their many benefits to the antioxidants you’ll want to ensure are in your daily skincare routine.

What are antioxidants?

Antioxidants are powerful compounds that defend our skin from free radicals. But what are these free radicals, you might be thinking? Free radicals are unstable molecules generated by exposure to factors like UV rays, pollution, cigarette smoking, industrial chemicals and more! They wreak havoc on our skin by causing damage to cells, speeding up the ageing process, and contributing to a range of skin issues!

Antioxidants, on the other hand, neutralize these free radicals, preventing them from causing damage to our skin. Think of antioxidants as the shield that protects our skin from the constant assault of modern life!

The benefits of antioxidants

Now that we know what antioxidants are, let’s talk about the many benefits they bring to our skin.

  1. Anti-Ageing

Antioxidants are the secret weapon against premature ageing. They help reduce the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and age spots by neutralizing free radicals and supporting the skin’s natural repair process.

  1. Skin brightening

If you’re dealing with dull, lacklustre skin antioxidants can come to the rescue. They promote a brighter complexion by tackling oxidative stress and enhancing skin radiance.

  1. Sun damage defence

While sunscreen is our first line of defence against UV rays, antioxidants play a crucial role in repairing and preventing sun damage. They work hand-in-hand with SPF to shield our skin from the harmful effects of sun exposure.

  1. Inflammation soothing

Antioxidants have anti-inflammatory properties, making them ideal for calming irritated skin. Whether you’re dealing with redness, sensitivity, or conditions like rosacea, antioxidants can help ease discomfort and promote a more balanced complexion.

  1. Collagen boosting

Collagen is the holy grail of youthful skin, and antioxidants are its best friend. By neutralizing free radicals that break down collagen, antioxidants contribute to maintaining the skin’s elasticity and firmness.

Medicalia Sunscreen SPF40 with Blue Light Shield

If you’re going to invest in one product that’s going to save you money in the long run, it has to be an SPF. While sunscreen won’t just help future-proof your face by slowing down the signs of ageing, there’s also not much point investing in other skincare products if you don’t have the fundamentals of your skincare routine down pat. This one is a firm favourite on our wishlist thanks to its hydrating properties that allow us to wear it as a moisturiser/sunscreen hybrid on lazy days without leaving any white cast or oily residue. Also, did we mention it sits perfectly under makeup.

What’s more it helps protect skin from not only UV rays but also blue light damage caused by our devices, which so many of us spend far too long in front of every day. Blue light from electronics is linked to a number of issues, from digital eye damage, to sleep deprivation (and lack of sleep never did anyone any good) and then there is the adverse effect it has on our skin! Why spend all that time, energy and money on skincare only to have the good undone by our devices? As quickly as a collagen cream can replenish our skin and soften fine lines and wrinkles, overexposure to “screen time” can actually prompt the formation of free radicals which break down collagen causing fine lines and wrinkles! And that’s not all! Excessive blue light can cause inflammation, leading to redness and dark spots, as well as hyperpigmentation, particularly in those with darker skin.

Let’s face it though, we aren’t going to give up scrolling on our phone or our love of Netflix at night, nor can those of us who work, simply shutdown our laptops and say no more! But what we can do is use Medicalias sunscreen SPF 40 with blue light shield.
