How Korean Skincare will transform your skin

I’m sure I’m correct in saying we’ve all heard about the K-beauty phenomenon!  From dewy complexions to flawless makeup looks, this skincare trend is taking the beauty world by storm, but exactly what is #kbeauty and why is it trending? Well we are here to answer all your burning k-beauty questions! Keep reading as we divulge all there is to know about Korean skincare, how it will transform your complexion and the best Korean skincare products in Australia!

What is k-beauty?

K-beauty, short for Korean beauty, refers to the skincare and cosmetics products, techniques, and trends originating from South Korea. Renowned for its innovative formulations, advanced technology, and holistic approach to skincare, Korean skincare has gained immense popularity worldwide. It encompasses a wide range of products, including cleansers, creams, serums, essences and sheet masks, each designed to address specific skin concerns and enhance your natural beauty. K-beauty emphasizes achieving healthy, radiant skin through consistent routines, gentle ingredients, and a blend of traditional Korean philosophies and modern scientific advancements!

Why is Korean skincare trending?

Renowned for its innovative formulations (From traditional herbal extracts like ginseng and green tea to cutting-edge ingredients like hyaluronic acid and snail mucin), its holistic approach, and undeniable results, Korean skincare has become more than just a trend – it’s a lifestyle. Korean skincare embraces the idea of “skinimalism,” focusing on achieving healthy, radiant skin through a curated routine tailored to your individual needs. From double cleansing and layering multiple products to embracing sheet masks and essence, each step is carefully choreographed to cleanse, nourish and protect the skin, leaving it supple, hydrated and glowing with vitality.

K-beauty’s multi-step approach has not escaped criticism though, with some claiming the use of multiple products (a 10 step routine in some cases) is “too much for the skin”.  Of course this could be the case when using Western formulations which may contain a high percentage of stimulating actives, but it is important to note that Korean skincare and Western skincare are not formulated the same, and trying to use Korean philosophy with Western skincare products can be overwhelming for the skin. While Western skincare is all about targeting specific concerns with potent targeted ingredients, Korean philosophy is all about hydration and reducing inflammation that leads to ageing.

So what makes Korean skincare different to western skincare?

  1. Multi-step routine

Korean skincare popularized a comprehensive routine, with steps like double cleansing, toning, essence, serum, moisturizer, and sunscreen.

  1. Professional grade

Korean skincare prioritise professional grade formulations using high concentrations of quality ingredients for outstanding results every time.

  1. Emphasis on hydration

Korean skincare prioritizes hydration with ingredients like hyaluronic acid and ceramides, aiming for a dewy, “glass skin” look.

  1. Preventative approach

Korean skincare focuses on preventing issues with regular sunscreen use and anti-aging ingredients.

  1. Gentle formulations

Korean skincare offers mild products suitable for sensitive skin, made with natural ingredients.

  1. Innovative ingredients

Korean brands use cutting-edge technology, like fermented extracts, snail mucin and plant-based stem cells, for targeted results.

  1. Holistic beauty

Korean skincare promotes inner and outer health, including diet, hydration, sleep, and stress management, alongside skincare for radiant skin.

Why follow the 10-Step k-beauty skincare routine?

Designed to truly pamper and nourish the skin, this comprehensive 10 step routine may seem daunting at first but it offers a customizable approach to skincare, allowing individuals to tailor their routine based on their skin type, concerns, and preferences. From cleansing and exfoliating to toning, treating, and moisturizing, each step plays a vital role in achieving radiant, youthful-looking skin.

All you need to know about Retinol

If you’ve ever wondered what the secret is to some people’s youthful, or ageless glow, despite the fact they are in their 40s, 50s and beyond, it’s likely retinol!

The holy grail of the skincare world, retinol is a true multi-tasker, providing skin with a multitude of benefits from wrinkle reduction to pore perfecting and everything in between!

Whether you’re a skincare novice or a seasoned enthusiast, we are here to tell you all you need to know about retinol and why you’ll want to add this powerhouse ingredient into your skincare routine.

What is retinol?

When it comes to reducing visible signs of ageing, retinol is the “super-ingredient” every beauty professional raves about. A derivative of vitamin A, retinol helps to radially reduce the appearance of fine lines and prevents premature skin ageing including wrinkles and age spots. But there is so much more retinol can do for your skin…

Serum,In,Pipette,Isolated,On,White,Background.,Cosmetic,Liquid,DropperWhat does retinol do?

In short, retinol is a true multi-taster! Here is the low down on what retinol actually does for your skin!

  1. Retinol promotes cell turnover

When skin is exposed to the UV rays of the sun it absorbs free radicals, which attack healthy cells. Retinol interrupts this process by attaching itself to damaged cells and communicating with them, helping them to act like healthy cells again. It also accelerates the turnover of skin cells encouraging the shedding of old, damaged skin cells and stimulating the production of new, healthy ones. This process helps in maintaining smoother and more youthful-looking skin.

  1. Retinol reduces fine lines and wrinkles

One of retinol’s shining talents is its ability to diminish the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. By promoting collagen production, it helps improve skin elasticity and firmness, reducing the signs of ageing.

  1. Retinol fades dark spots

Retinol is a champion in tackling hyperpigmentation. It can lighten dark spots, sun spots, and even out skin tone by inhibiting the production of melanin, the pigment responsible for discolouration.

  1. Retinol unclogs pores

If you’re dealing with pesky blackheads or whiteheads, retinol can be your best friend. It helps prevent the clogging of pores, reducing the chances of acne and promoting clearer skin.

  1. Retinol improves skin texture

Using retinol regularly can lead to smoother and softer skin. It aids in minimizing rough patches, refining texture, and giving your skin a more polished appearance.

  1. Retinol boosts collagen production

Collagen is like the glue that holds your skin together. Retinol stimulates collagen synthesis, which contributes to improved skin structure, firmness, and overall resilience.

  1. Retinol addresses acne

If you’re battling acne, retinol can be beneficial. It helps regulate oil production, prevents the formation of comedones (clogged pores), and promotes a clearer complexion.

Is retinol good for acne?

Absolutely! Retinol is a powerhouse against acne, regulating oil production, unclogging pores, and reducing inflammation. In fact its skin-renewing properties fade post-acne marks.

Can you use hyaluronic acid with retinol?

Yes! Hyaluronic acid and retinol are actually a dream team when it comes to skincare. While retinol addresses signs of ageing and acne, hyaluronic acid provides a burst of essential hydration. The combination of both ingredients ensures skin remains moisturised, plump, and balanced.

Apply hyaluronic acid first to hydrate, followed by retinol for its transformative effects. If the two ingredients are in the same product even better! Together, they create the perfect routine for a radiant and youthful complexion.

Can you use retinol and vitamin C together?

Yes, you can use retinol and vitamin C together in your skincare routine, but it’s important to use them strategically to maximize their benefits without causing irritation. Both ingredients offer potent anti-aging and skin-brightening effects.

Apply vitamin C in the morning for antioxidant protection and brighter skin. Use retinol in the evening to promote cell turnover and reduce signs of ageing. Start with lower concentrations, gradually increasing as your skin adjusts. Always use sunscreen during the day as both ingredients can make your skin more sensitive to sunlight.

Can I use niacinamide with retinol?

Yes, you can use niacinamide (vitamin B3) with retinol in your skincare routine. These two ingredients are generally considered compatible and can work well together to address various skin concerns. Niacinamide offers soothing and anti-inflammatory properties, complementing retinol’s anti-aging and skin-renewing benefits.

Using them together can help minimize potential irritation sometimes associated with retinol use. Incorporating niacinamide and retinol into your routine can contribute to a balanced approach for addressing fine lines, wrinkles, and overall skin health.

Can you use salicylic acid and retinol together?

When using two potent, acne-fighting ingredients, it’s best to take precautions before combining them. Salicylic acid and other BHAs and AHAs are exfoliating ingredients that can potentially increase skin sensitivity when combined with retinol. If you are wanting to use both ingredients in your skincare routine, it is best to use them at night, on different days, and at different times and built up from there.

Can you use retinol when pregnant?

Unfortunately, retinol is generally discouraged during pregnancy due to potential risks. High doses of vitamin A, (of which as previously mentioned retinol is a derivative) may pose concerns for foetal development. Instead look at alternative skincare ingredients safe for pregnancy, like vitamin C or hyaluronic acid.

Does retinol help with pigmentation?

Yes, retinol is effective in addressing pigmentation issues. It works by promoting skin cell turnover, which helps fade dark spots and hyperpigmentation. By encouraging the shedding of old, pigmented skin cells and promoting the growth of new, evenly pigmented cells, retinol contributes to a more even skin tone. Regular use of retinol can be beneficial in reducing the appearance of sunspots, age spots, and other forms of hyperpigmentation, leading to a brighter and more radiant complexion.

Is retinol good for sun damage?

Yes, retinol is definitely beneficial for addressing sun damage. Its ability to promote skin renewal and collagen production helps reduce the appearance of sun-induced wrinkles, fine lines, and dark spots. Don’t forget though, it’s essential to use sunscreen alongside retinol to protect the skin from further sun damage and maximize its effectiveness.

Can everyone use retinol?

While retinol is great for those concerned with wrinkles, sun damage and acne, it can cause dryness, redness and peeling, so people with sensitive skin need to be cautious. Sensitive skin can however be trained to tolerate retinol with slow introduction.

Retinol is not recommended however for sensitized skin (reactive, inflamed and sunburn skin).

Always perform a patch test before applying retinol to the entire face to check for any adverse reactions. And remember retinol is a no go for pregnant woman or women breast feeding.

Can I use retinol every night?

Once your skin adjusts to retinol you can definitely use it every night! You need to understand that to reap the rewards of retinol though, there will likely be an adjustment period first. When you introduce retinol to your skincare routine, your skin might experience some initial side effects like redness, flakiness, or dryness. It’s like the initiation phase, but don’t worry, it’s usually just your skin getting used to this powerhouse ingredient. Gradual introduction and consistent use can help your skin adapt and benefit long term. Start by applying it one or two times a week for the first week and gradually increase application.

Remember retinol is best applied at night, particularly because it makes your skin more photosensitive.

Oh and don’t forget your sunscreen! Retinol makes your skin more sensitive to the sun, so you’ll need to slather on SPF every morning (but you should be anyway!!)

How long does retinol take to work?

Results from retinol skincare can vary. Some people may notice improvements in a few weeks, days even, while others might take a couple of months. Generally, it takes at least 12 weeks to see significant changes in terms of reduced fine lines, improved texture, and diminished dark spots. Consistency is key, and it’s crucial to be patient as the benefits of retinol often accumulate over time. Once you see results you will never look back!

Look younger with makeup: 14 expert tips

Who says you can’t cheat a little on the ageing game with the magic of makeup? While skincare is essential for keeping skin healthy and happy, makeup can literally take years off your face in next to no time, you just need to know what and how to apply! Well we’ve put together our top makeup tips from the BC experts, 14 makeup tips that will have you looking younger in a matter of minutes! Keep reading as we count them down.

1. Start with a nourishing base, every time.

Before applying any makeup, you need to start with well-hydrated skin so don’t get lazy when it comes to your morning skincare routine. Start by making sure your face is perfectly cleansed, then apply your serum and moisturiser.

If you haven’t prepped your skin before applying your foundation, chances are your skin will look and feel dry. Plus makeup tends to stick to dry areas on the skin making it appear patchy. It’ll even seep into fine lines and wrinkles accentuating them!
For best results apply your moisturiser and wait five minutes for it to properly absorb in. Remember hydration really is the secret to plump, younger looking skin!

2. Arm yourself with a primer

Primers are often the forgotten step when it comes to makeup application but we are here to tell you that this underrated makeup staple is a necessity, especially when it comes to looking younger with makeup! Creating an extra layer between your skin and makeup, face primers are used to plump fine lines, blur impurities and blemishes, smooth skin, and help makeup last all day without caking, creasing or the need for constant touch-ups. They really are key to achieving smooth, flawless skin that’s perfectly prepped for your foundation!

Check out our favourite primers here.

3. Always opt for a dewy foundation

You might be a lover of powder foundations but if you want to create a more youthful and radiant complexion you need to consider ditching the matte finish. No matter your skin type, too much face powder can actually age you! That’s right, it can highlight fine lines and wrinkles instead of helping to conceal them. Instead embrace dewy foundations, BB Creams or tinted moisturisers instead. They provide skin with natural coverage, SPF protection (which we all know is the main contributor to premature ageing) and a perfect subtle glow.

If your skin tends to be on the oily side, you can still use a little powder, but remember sparingly and just on your t-zone.

4. A good concealer will give you an instant eye lift

Concealer really is your best friend when it comes to looking younger! Used correctly, concealer can brighten a tired complexion, cover up any blemishes, conceal dark under-eye circles and have you looking bright-eyed in seconds! To look younger, you’re best to opt for a concealer packed with amazing anti-ageing and eye nurturing ingredients like ELES Dual Action Concealer and watch those ageing dark circles, puffiness, age spots and blemishes disappear in seconds!

Just be sure to choose the right shade for your skin and apply it correctly! For more on the best way to cover undereye dark circles click here.

5. Lift your lashes

As we age our lashes get thinner and shorter so it’s essential to add volume so they stand out! A lash lift with mascara is a powerful tool for defying the ageing process! Darkened and defined lashes open up our eyes, creating a refreshed, youthful and wide awake appearance.

Curling your lashes can work wonders too but be careful how you do so! For more information on the best mascara, mascara hacks and eye lash tips for mature women click here.

6. Play with eyeshadow shades

Eyeshadow isn’t an essential step but by adding a touch of shimmer to your lids can enhance eyes ageing eyes. Just be sure to opt for warm, neutral eyeshadows. Soft, earthy tones can create a subtle, age-defying effect.

7. Skip the heavy black eyeliner

If you use eyeliner, as many of us do, you’ll want to trade your harsh eyeliner for a softer approach. Use brown or grey liners for a more natural look that defines without weighing down your eyes.

8. Brighten eyes with a waterline eyeliner

Investing in a waterline eyeliner will be a game changer for tired eyes. All you need to do is line your bottom waterline for an instantly wide-eyed effect. We promise you it’s worth the money as one swipe will truly create brighter, younger looking eyes.

ELES Waterliner

9. Don’t forget your brows

Just as the hair on our heads can thin with age, so do our eyebrows! The thing is your brows can completely change how your face looks. Full, well-groomed brows are an instant youth-booster. If brow are thinning, fill in sparse areas with a brow pencil or powder for a lifted, more defined look. But don’t overfill the front part of your brow though! This area should have soft hair that graduates into more density. If you overfill this area you can make your eye brows look way too harsh. Read more on how to create perfect brows.

10. Applying blush is a must

Believe us when we say a sweep of blush on the apples of your cheeks adds a youthful flush. Just be sure to apply it correctly – use a blush brush and lift colour upwards towards your temple from the apple of your cheek.

blush and blush brush

11. And don’t forget bronzer

Bronzer is your secret weapon for a youthful glow! Applied strategically, it adds warmth to your complexion, erasing signs of fatigue and dullness but instead mimicking a healthy, sun-kissed glow.

Just be careful when and where you apply it as dusting copious amounts of bronzer all over our nose, chin, cheeks and forehead can play up fine lines and large pores as the powder sinks into them. The best (and the most flattering!) way is to apply your bronzer is with a bronzer brush to the perimeter of your face in the shape of a number three. Start on your forehead near your temples and loop down to the tops of your cheekbones, then curve out and around again along your jaw.

12. Plump up those lips

As we age, many of us will experience a reduction in lip volume and thinning of the lips! So you’ll need to create the illusion of plumped lips with lipliner! A lipliner will define your lips and prevent feathering. For more on how to apply lip liner for fuller looking lips click here.

Gel lipliner

13. Using an illuminator can add luminosity to skin and help accentuate cheekbones

Finish your look with a subtle illuminator on the high points of your face – cheekbones, brow bones, and the tip of your nose.

14. Set your makeup with a finishing powder

A light dusting of translucent powder, finishing powder or even facial mist will set your makeup, preventing it from settling into fine lines. Remember, less is more in the powder department.
