Fighting Skin Aging and Sun Damage with Retinol

by: PEVONIA US

Retinol, we’ve all heard of it but what exactly is it and what does it do? Read on and learn about the anti-ageing wonder ingredient that works to combat nearly all signs of sun damage and skin ageing.

What Is Vitamin A?

Vitamin A is one of the best ingredients to treat signs of aging and sun-damaged skin. Vitamin A is an antioxidant vitamin and may be in the form of retinol, retinyl palmitate, tretinoin, retinoic acid, retinal, retinaldehyde and beta-carotene.

About Retinol

Retinol is the most active and skin-friendly form of Vitamin A and is a derivative of Vitamin A obtained through enzymatic conversion from natural Vitamin A (retinyl palmitate) and retinol. It is one of the best ingredients for rejuvenated skin as it addresses each of the causes, processes and symptoms of aging and sun-damage. Overall, it promotes a smoother, more even skin tone and texture, and is considered the gold standard in anti-aging.

How Retinol Works

Retinol dramatically enhances skin cellular performance and repairs cellular signs of aging. With age, cell reproduction becomes sluggish, resulting in slow, uneven cell renewal and cell turnover. Retinol promotes rapid cell renewal and turnover by helping break down dead skin, and pushing dead cells out faster. This paves the way for newer, plumper skin cells and signals the deeper layers to produce more collagen and elastin to support the “new” skin. In essence, retinol has a resurfacing effect, as it smoothes, firms and evens skin tone.

Retinol can also be considered a skin organizer. Dead skin cells in aging or sun-damaged skin become disorganized, much like piles of bricks after a building demolition. Retinol reorganizes skin cells, as if reconstructing the bricks back into a well-constructed brick wall. Retinol does this by normalizing enzymatic activity, which is needed for healthy cell division (mitosis).

Retinol addresses the collagen loss, dehydration and uneven pigment production that occur with aging and sun overexposure. Collagen loss causes wrinkles and sagging. When retinol comes in, it strengthens and stimulates collagen production, smoothes lines, plumps the skin and repairs sun damage. Dryness and dehydration that occur give skin a tight, flakey look and feel. Retinol restores moisture balance by maintaining hydration and reducing evaporation of water. This improves elasticity and flexibility, plus increases strong and healthy lipids in the membranes.

Additional Benefits of Vitamin A

Aging and sun damage also cause irregular and uneven production of pigment (melanin). Retinol helps melanocytes (responsible for producing pigment) dispose of trapped melanin.

With age skin becomes thinner. Retinol improves the skin density and bolsters the skin barrier by rebuilding the upper layers of the skin (epidermis) with stronger, thicker, healthier cells.

As an antioxidant, retinol neutralizes free radicals that damage the skin and cause aging.

Studies show that Vitamin A can reduce pH levels to help normalize the skin disrupted by factors that cause inflammation and aging; one more way retinol fights aging.

Retinol works optimally within the epidermis, and indirectly benefits the dermis as well to reveal new, smoother, brighter skin.

Vitamin A and Pevonia

Pevonia® uses state-of-the art manufacturing technologies to stabilize retinol, as well as ensure maximum results without the irritation associated with prescription retinoids or retinoic acids. Retinol is in Pevonia’s Timeless Repair Cream, Stem Cells Phyto-Elite® Intensive Cream, lumablanc® Cream and De-Aging Body Balm – Papaya Pineapple.

To counteract the light and air sensitivity of retinol, Pevonia developed their Micro-Retinol® that is a much smaller, more stable form of retinol that is skin-friendly, yet effective. For this form of Vitamin A try Pevonia’s Micro-Retinol® line (Micro-Retinol® Essential Foaming Cleanser, Micro-Retinol® Essential Toner, Micro-Retinol® Essential Serum and Micro-Retinol® Essential Moisturizer).

Retinyl Palmitate is a pre-formed, ester version of Vitamin A that has antioxidant and emollient properties that can be found in the Rejuvenating Dry Skin Cream, Vitaminic Concentrate, Évolutive Eye Cream, Timeless Repair Cream and Timeless Eye Contour.

Beta-carotene, the most important precursor of Vitamin A formation, is another skin- friendly source of Vitamin A. This natural carotenoid consists of two retinyl groups, which support healthy cellular functions, growth and metabolism. It also acts as an emollient, which makes it key for dry, aging skin. Beta-carotene is in the following Pevonia products: Dry Skin Lotion, Combination Skin Cleanser, Micro-Retinol® Essential Foaming Cleanser, Micro-Retinol® Essential Moisturizer, De-Aging Saltmousse – Papaya-Pineapple and De-Aging Body Balm – Papaya-Pineapple.

Schedule one of these professional Pevonia treatments to experience more of the benefits of Vitamin A: Micro-Retinol® Essential Treatment, Rejuvenating Dry Skin Mask, Stem Cells Phyto-Elite® Intensive Mask, or lumafirm® Body Treatment.

Retinol is not to be confused with retinoic acids, retinoids such as Retin-A®, Avita® and Renova®. These dermatologist-prescribed retinoids can cause burning, redness, itching, skin thinning, flaking, even cracking, due to having a different chemical structure than retinol.

Beauty Collective - Understanding your skin

Your skin through the ages: Understanding your skin and choosing the right products to prevent premature ageing

When it comes to ageing, nothing reflects it more than our skin.
From the silky smoothness of a baby’s complexion to the lines and wrinkles of mature lady, here’s what to expect through the decades, and what you can do to help prolong your youth and prevent premature ageing!

20’s

Once you reach your twenties it’s easy to fall under the false pretence that since your teens are behind you, so are those pesky pimples! Wrong! While your skin may have settled (as have those hormones) it’s still producing oil. Also news flash! Your body actually stops producing collagen once you hit 25! You know collagen, the protein which provides elasticity to the skin helping it to appear youthful, glowing and vibrant! So it’s important to exfoliate daily to continue daily collagen renewal.

What you may need: Opt for natural extracts in light-textured, non-greasy formulations in order to keep pores clean and clear. Also, use a broad spectrum UVA & UVB daily sunscreen – just remember you’re never too young to start wearing sunscreen!

Try; Organic Essentials Line; Gentle Exfoliating Cleanser, Hydrating Sunscreen SPF 30

30’s

Ageing really begins at 30. Fine lines develop as collagen and elastin start to break down, and our delicate skin under the eyes begins to thin. Skin generally becomes drier, quicker. Broken veins may start to show up as tiny red dots, and towards the end of this decade, age spots and brown pigmentation marks, or ‘sun spots’, may appear. Under-eye puffiness may become a problem, taking longer to subside after you wake.

What you may need: Effective youth-prolonging skincare to strengthen, smooth and rejuvenate. Hydrating Moisturisers formulated with marine collagen, Eye Creams & Gels.

Try; Age Correction Marine Collagen Cream & Intensifier, Age Correction Eye Contour, “C” Evolutive Eye Gel.

40’s

Deeper lines begin to etch around the mouth and eyes, furrows appear on the forehead and circles under the eyes may grow into pouches. Most women’s skin becomes noticeably drier. In the run-up to the menopause, and during this phase, skin may also become more sensitive. What’s more, skin loses its resilience due to a breakdown of elastin and collagen.

What you may need: Your daily regime should embrace products that offer specific benefits to counteract skin problems such as: anti-aging, sensitivity, hyper-pigmentation, Eg. Soothing serums to protect capillaries, lip and eye care, deeply repairing and resurfacing products.

Try; Micro-Retinol Line; Eye Renew Conceal & De-Age Treatment, Lip Renew Plump & De-Age Treatment, Propolis Concentrate

50’s

By now, skin starts to acquire true ‘character’ in the form of fine wrinkles, and the lines you develop in your 50’s and 60’s may deepen into folds. This is because, post-menopausal, there’s much less oestrogen being produced and without oestrogen, skin becomes thinner and more fragile. It is also less able to retain moisture and the production of collagen and elastin slows down significantly. In your 50’s skin tone is also likely to become more uneven, with an increasing number of ‘sun spots’.

What you may need: Products that minimize the appearance of lines, contain phyto-estrogens and protect the skin from the sun or even fade sunspots.

Try; Stem Cells Phyto-Elite Line, RS2 Line, Lip Renew Plump & De-Age Treatment, Lumafirm Eye Contour Lift & GlowRenewing Glycocides Cream

60’s

Your skin has a hard time retaining moisture and natural oil production slows down so skin is very dry. Cell turnover continues to slow – a process that started in your forties so skin is generally duller than before. Between the lack of oil, the loss of collagen and elastin, and the dryness, dark spots can really start to stand out. Areas of scaly roughness often seen on fair-skinned women that can be a precursor to skin cancer.

What you may need: De-ageing products with wrinkle relaxers such as vegetal botox, exfoliating products with aha’s, products rich in collagen and elastin, sun protection and pigment fading products

Try; Myoxy-Caviar Timeless Repair Line, Renewing Glycocides Cream, Lumablanc Cream
